There were lots of people following the motorcade down the street. I called out to my mom, Jean Clarke, and she took me, my sister Dionne Clarke and my cousin Marc Dannett to see him at the Sports Arena. He sparred with the prime minister at the time and made the crowd laugh. He truly was the greatest boxer of all times. May he R.I.P.” Once asked about his preferred legacy, Ali said: “I would like to be remembered as a man who won the heavyweight title three times, who was humorous and who treated everyone right. As a man who never looked down on those who looked up to him … who stood up for his beliefs … who tried to unite all humankind through faith and love.

“And if all that’s too much, then I guess I’d settle for being remembered only as a great boxer who became a leader and a champion of his people. And I wouldn’t even mind if folks forgot how pretty I was.”

Indeed, the attitude in Ali’s quotes was reflective when he visited Guyana, as those who remembered him saw he was someone who “unites all humankind through faith and love”.

Ali’s arrival in Guyana at Timehri Airport (now Cheddi Jagan International Airport) was received with celebrations and music. There was pan music and much enjoyment. It is said that Ali walked straight to the steel pan and started playing like a natural. Those who witnessed the legend on pan were mesmerized, as he had shown to be one with the people of Guyana.

There was also a motorcade that transported the champ to his destination. Eyewitnesses said the streets were overflowing with people as they tried to get a glimpse of the legendary boxer.

An unforgettable visit by a legend (April 22, 1979)

During this visit, he was said to be the house guest of Mohammed Kamal of Bloomfield and of Abdool of Rose Hall Town.

On the website, Mohamed Ally Sookwa commented on the photo: “I met the champion who sat me on his lap and fed me an ice cream cone. I was only 11 at the time…”

Mj Singh (chs-jccss.org) recalled: “I remember the champion visit to Guyana. I was 16 years old at the time. I use to live on Robb St then. My school had us line up by the masjid on Robb St to welcome him…The champion shake all of us hands. Great memories...will be sadly missed.”

By John Gimlette Extract from Gimlette’s “Wild Coast: Travels on South America’s Untamed Edge” uring my last week in the Rupununi, I travelled out to the great ranch at Pirara, to see what was left. Evelyn Waugh had said that, in 1933, it was “one of the most imposing and important houses in the district”. He described a schoolroom, fruit trees and a compendious library with books on every conceivable subject “much ravaged by ants”.

I paid it a visit with my friend, Mr Li. “I used to come here as a child,” he said as we reached the drive.

Ahead of us was a mountainous billowing of mango trees, topped with a wind pump.

Beyond it we could just make out a river – the Pirara – like a long thin lake, curling away through the hummocks of grass. Mr Li said he’d camped here in 1963, and had almost lost a finger, fishing for perai.

recalled, “a rough and tumble lot.”

I asked what he meant. “Like something from a Louis L’Amour. Fantasists.”

Everyone had stories about the Harts.

They were descended from a giant American, who’d arrived in 1911, after a spell digging railways in Brazil. Ben Hart had weighed over 200lbs, and the sight of so much space was clearly to his liking. He settled, and married another of Harry Melville’s daughters, Amy. Waugh remembered him as “a kindly middle-aged American of wide experience” and piety.

But it was a curious type of piety. By night, Ben led moonlit processions through the grounds, accompanied by his six wild sons, their governess and their Wapisiana grandmother. By day, the boys were “tumultuous”, and spent their school hours reciting the rosary and getting whipped.

But Waugh was clearly taken by their governess, a Creole who wore shorts. She was, he wrote (with uncharacteristic fervour), “as lithe and vital as an adolescent Josephine Baker”.

Even she, however, managed to exercise only a “precarious care”.

“No wonder the boys were so wild,” said Mr Li. We were now almost at the mango trees, churning through the sand.

seemed, turned into natural rebels. “They used to hold rodeos here,” said Mr Li, “and parachute jumps. I think two of the boys had been in the US army, and had served in Korea. But all of them were always fighting!

I think most were involved in the uprising …”

Beneath the mango trees, all trace of the old ranch had gone.

Mr Li stopped and stared. “I still find this hard to believe …”

In front of us, an imposing mansion had vanished, along with its schoolroom and its compendious library of half-eaten books.

After the 1969 Rupununi revolt, the army had burnt and destroyed everything, even the corrals and the fences. The Harts had fled; every single one.

President Burnham Forbes had regarded their Pirara as “the centre of the operation”, and this was his terrible revenge. Now all that remained were a few shoddy brick structures erected in the eighties, and abandoned ten years later.

From one of them an Indian emerged, grinning and waving. “Me truck broken down on the road,” he said, “I been here two days now!”

He said that, although he was surprised by the fruit, he’d not felt easy here.

Why should I care about history?

A

little knowledge of history could be dangerous and a lot of knowledge about history could also be paralyzing.

Sometimes the narrative in the popular psyche is confined by lines of a story that is passed on in one’s tribe.

Very often that story is good and holds the tribe together. Often though, the tales of the past becomes legend.

These legends sometimes amplify the enemy’s power, for example, the “jumbie man” (zombie).

Consider stories from nations that talk about racial history. All around there are examples, such as the many European conflicts, some in the Balkans are about old ethnic divides.

Rwanda was a tragic example of black-on-black violence because of how they looked at each other and the

Mark Ramnauth feelings harboured towards the other side. The Middle East is not much different.

Although knowledge of history should not be downplayed, there are some grave dangers. The major one, I think, is that one can be paralyzed and trapped by the past. The good old days are often not always that good. Some of us Guyanese would still be saying that we were better off under British rule. Many of us are

still focused on our first two leaders, Jagan and Burnham, and we carry those deep feelings of division forward for generations.

We need to know history, but not be trapped by it.

Sometimes we build monuments so we don’t forget the pain, oppression and the tyranny.

While that has an important place, we should be careful though, not to memorialize violence and feelings of hate. We don’t want to forget history and repeat tragedies, but we do want to learn from history, transcend history, unshackle history and sometimes forget history.

The next 50 years for Guyana will obviously be profoundly different. Events around the globe will be felt with more immediate impact because of technology, global economics and cli-

mate change. Look around and ask yourself, “Where did all the changes come from?”

We can do much to capitalize on the trends with vision from our political, business and civic leaders.

There is a tendency at times of not looking abroad. But don’t be closed to the ideas and solutions from abroad while nurturing the uniqueness about our beloved homeland and our story as a nation. Our affection for the planet has increased as we look at Earth from space.

The evolution of technology is exponential and therein I would argue, is the keys to many of our long term and short term challenges.

The will to reduce poverty is handicapped by clinging to specific ideologies. There are many noble ways to get there.

For the immediate day we can all do a lot to change our mood. The media shapes the mood of the country perhaps only second to the family. When crime is the story, then fear is the mood. When fear is the mood we run or fight.

The mood on the street is reflective of the struggle to make a living, crime and the integrity of politicians. The mood also has something to

do with the current wave of suicide because it is the ultimate lack of hope.

A can-do attitude is very noticeable in the spirit of Guyana. We really don’t want to dwell too much on history. We do want to put some wings on our can-do attitude. The wings of profound hope and imaginative optimism will help us shape a glorious new history because today’s future is tomorrow’s history.

Mark Ramnauth grew up in Guyana with his visual impairment, and was a school drop-out from Charlestown Secondary School due to the inaccessibility of the school and the unwillingness of the teachers to accommodate him.

He subsequently migrated to the US in the late 1980s, and once again attended school, graduating from high school and obtaining a few degrees from various colleges. Ramnauth eventually earned his Masters in the field of Rehabilitation Science from New York University. He worked for many years in the area of rehabilitation, working with persons with disabilities.

Ramnauth presently has a consultant company pro-

viding consultancy to various state boards and other companies as it relates to disabilities.

He is also the proud father of a 14-year-old son, Paul Ramnauth, who has looked up to his father as his biggest role model. Paul is an accomplished swimmer, plays clarinet in a full orchestra, on a ballroom team, and was just accepted into one of America’s leading high schools.

His encouragement for others with disabilities is: “Belief in the possibilities is key. You need to learn about accessible technologies. No exposure limits you to your space. In my case growing up, family, doctors, teachers often were never exposed to possibilities. Today, it is better, but you have to leave your comfort zone to grow. Learn typing and keyboard. Network with others and encourage the society to overcome their limits on you. There are lots of free resources on the internet.”

Women of Kaieteur

W

omen of Kaieteur is a global empowerment network for Guyanese women and girls that works on three principles: inspiration, empowerment and motivation.

It is a not-for-profit organisation, focused on the personal and professional development of Guyanese women and girls through these three principles.

The organisation’s mission is to “deliver these three themes by galvanising the collective skills and talents of Guyanese women globally to effect positive gender equality changes in Guyana”.

In an interview with Sunday Times Magazine, its founder Roianne Nedd said that all members of the network are Guyanese or of Guyanese heritage.

“Kaieteur was chosen because of it is a natural phenomenon that has sprung from the soil of our homeland. A thing of strength and beauty it perfectly embodies our purpose,” Nedd explained.

Through Women of Kaieteur, Nedd and her team aim to raise the voices of women and girls in Guyana. They want to see “women being recognised for their important contributions to society, and create a safe place for women and girls to raise concerns and challenge the status quo as a collective”.

“I have worked on gender equality policies in the UK for over 15 years, which gave me a unique insight into the barriers that face women and girls when they aren’t adequately supported to achieve their full potential. I have also watched, with increasing horror, as the scourge of suicide and domestic violence and homicide have taken root back home [Guyana], with women being most affected in many cases. Some friends and I just felt that we had to do something to make a change in Guyana,” Nedd expressed.

Women of Kaieteur creates and builds networks with Guyanese women across the globe, encouraging them to share their skills and experiences to positive-

Its current project involves publishing a book about Guyanese women called “50 Women: 50 Years”, which will profile everyday women who are making significant contributions to society and highlight their achievements. Additionally, the organisation is currently planning its ‘Summer Programme’ which will involve events in London and Guyana.

“We have a unique delivery proposition which enables us to work with the widest range of stakeholders and collaborate innovatively with delivery partners. We take a balanced scorecard approach to our work which

is underpinned by strategy and operations,” Nedd outlined.

Some of these “strategy and operations” include ‘Education (E1)’ which focuses on its intention to work with schools to deliver empowerment and education sessions on topics which are relevant to its campaigning priorities.

‘Entrepreneurship (E2)’ encourages economic independence by supporting female entrepreneurs through webinars and masterclasses to establish and strengthen sustainable and viable business practices.

‘Campaigning (C1)’ focuses mainly on social jus-

tice and social change and will involve policy comment as well as petitioning and campaigning for change.

‘Corporate Responsibility (C2)’ will work to challenge organisations to consider

gender equality and practice non-discriminatory policymaking as part of their employer and service provider responsibilities.

Nedd noted that the informal mentoring relation-

ships in place allow members to support each other.

“Our big plan for 2017 is to launch a helpline that people can telephone and get through to someone who will listen to them and try to help them take a more positive view of their situation. This is based on the Samaritan model, which operates in the UK. If you want to eradicate gender inequality and be part of the movement to create positive outcomes for women and girls in Guyana while joining a supportive network of likeminded individuals, then join Women of Kaieteur - the global empowerment network for Guyanese women and girls,” Nedd declared.

Nedd pointed out that Women of Kaieteur Facebook group is open to anyone with a particular focus on Caribbean people.

So much was his concern that Schomburgk put his words to action; after stating that ‘the Indians are capable of progressive improvement, and that the establishment of social order, Europeans arts and Christian morals among them is possible’, he took three natives to England in 1839 for a short while in which they did him proud with ‘progressive improvement’.

The first edition of ‘Twelve Views’ published in 1940 was an ambitious project, engaging the backings of 360 subscribers to get it published. That first edition and was also published in colour and black and white, making use of innovative colour lithography. This recent edition published by the Guyana Heritage Society was also an ambitious project; long was the gestation period, but the Society was partnered by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) which funded the reprinting.

The reprinting of ‘The Twelve Views in the Interior of Guiana’ by Sir Robert Schomburgk, has reopened the adventure in rediscovering El Dorado – the rich natural and literary heritage of Guyana.

T

he Waiwai are known for their beautiful craftwork that adorn their everyday, functional utensils and clothing. From lightweight basketry, bows and arrows, beaded necklaces and hammocks still being crafted, to war and dance clubs no longer produced, their artistic artefacts can be found in places ranging from international museums to local craft fairs.

The Wai Wai war and dance clubs, once so profusely made that there were many to be sold or donated to museums around the world, has since ceased to be created.

According to the Horniman Museum, this is almost certainly the result of the strong influence of early missionaries who not only reduced inter-tribal conflict but were putting an end to traditional ceremonies and dance festivals.

“This is broadly true of all the Amerindian groups of Guyana amongst whom clubs are rarely, if ever, found,” it stated.

(1929) wellknown Guyana historian Walter Roth displayed several clubs he described as Waiwai dance clubs, called shawarahara in Waiwai.

The ornamental craft were sometimes sheathed in a basket-covered handle, along with feathers raging from macaw to yard fowl feathers. The clubs were painted, Roth notes, with a red (annatto) base over which black paint or white incisions were patterned.

The Horniman Museum collection of Guyanese Amerindian material, located in South London’s Forest Hill, contains 18 war and dance clubs, of which there are basically two types: the block shaped and paddle shaped.

Of the 18, ten are said to have been purchased in 1949 from Philip Peberdy who travelled widely in the interior of Guyana between 1938 and 1948. Seven are of Waiwai origin; two are described as dance clubs, of which one is a toy dance club.

The head of the toy dance club is flat and shaped like a fish tail. It is painted with a black and cream pattern. Orange, red, grey, and cream feathers decorate the head of the club. The feathers are kept in place with string. The wood is polished.

According to the museum, it is not easy to classify clubs by their function.

Kaicumbay landscape

aicumbay is a predominantly Makushi-speaking satellite community situated at the edge of the forest along Kaicumbay Creek, 12 miles north of the Kanuku Mountains.

The village is home to around 300 persons who have their houses on the savannah hills away from the village centre, where the community primary school building is located. There is also a health centre.

Their main activities are farming, hunting and fishing.

A few families own several heads of cattle that graze in the savannah.

The main access to the village is via a good trail that intersects the old Yupukari trail in Rupununi, which runs from the main Lethem-Kurupukari road, about 4-5 miles south of Pirara, westerly through Marakanata village.

Teresa Amabile, a professor at Harvard Business School, has had hundreds of people keep thousands of diary entries about their work over the years, and analysed them for mood, work quality, etc.

As she said in an HBR interview years ago, “while our participants were giving evidence of less creative thinking on timepressured days, they reported feeling more creative on those days.” You think you’re cranking out your best work, but you’re probably not.

When you have no time pressure, your brain is constantly looking around for new things, and that can be good for creativity. But some of the things you’ll be looking around and noticing are completely irrelevant.

A deadline “allows you to clear away other stuff,” says Boyatzis. “Psychologically, you make a deal with yourself that you’re not going to worry that the washing machine may need replacing.” You focus on just this one problem. “That’s where it helps.”

It’s a big leap to go from “deadlines hinder creativity” to “ergo we shouldn’t have deadlines” because many times, done is better than perfect. If you’re a sports reporter filing a story on today’s baseball game, your readers care most about who won and how that team won, and they want to know that information quickly.

that takes an approach no one has ever taken before is great—and that’s an article to take your time on. But not every deliverable requires creative genius.

If you’ve got a big project, backing up and setting intermediate deadlines can create a motivating sense of progress. Michelle Rafter has done a variety of editing jobs, including a recent gig corralling a team of freelancers to write company profiles that had to be published in conjunction with some wellknown annual lists. In other words, no wiggle room.

Instead of asking for everything at once, she had writers commit to a certain number of profiles per week. She “kept detailed spreadsheets showing who was responsible for what, and whether they hit those goals,” she says.

Minideadlines allow for wiggle room even if the overall project has none. If one contributor was late, another might be early, which kept Rafter’s workload at a relatively constant level, lessening any negative effect of a less minute time crunch on her creativity.

Some people are just more deadline-oriented than others.

Smart managers know that different people respond to different incentives.

Rafter finds that “If writers have worked in daily news, websites that break news, or wire services, they’re very deadline oriented. Writers with that type of background don’t need a lot of motivation to hit deadlines, they know what to do.”

Others need more hand-holding and frequent check-ins. They’re not bad people, they’re just different people. Good management means getting to know the people you’re working with, and using deadlines as one tool in your kit for getting good work out of them in a timely fashion. Ways to handle work deadlines 1. Make a list: maintaining a list of due dates, as well as any communications dealing with that project and expected results, is essential.

2.

Make a schedule: determine when certain benchmarks of a project are due and write them on a schedule. If multiple projects are being worked at once, be sure to prioritize the due dates and put them in order.

3. Seek help: while it may seem like exhibiting weakness in the workplace, asking co-workers for help can be a far better option compared to banging one’s head against the wall when encountering a problem on deadline. A fresh perspective may be all the situation needs.

4. Re-negotiate: despite the name, deadlines many times can be negotiable, especially if a good reason is given.

Other ways to beat stress in the workplace 1. Exercise: Though it may be difficult, engaging in aerobic activity can improve one’s mood, boost energy lev-

els and sharpen focus.

2. Nutrition: When most people are on tight deadlines, they choose to eat lunch or dinner out of a fast food sack.

Eating right can also reduce stress because low blood sugar can make one feel irritable and anxious. Eating small meals more frequently can help maintain a steady level of blood sugar, which improves focus and increases energy.

3. Watch commitments: Whenever possible, avoid scheduling due dates that are back to back. Allowing time between ending one project and starting another will allow the brain to decompress and get ready to start the next task. It also provides time for the focus to shift to the next schedule and increases your chances to handle work deadlines more effectively.

4. Get to work earlier: Rather than running around like crazy in the morning and rushing to the desk, try to leave 1015 minutes earlier so coming to work can be a more pleasurable experience. Running late can add to stress levels.

5. Take breaks: Be sure to plan short breaks throughout the day that can help clear the mind. Take a walk around the outside of the office, or simply sit back for a few minutes. Getting away from the workstation during lunch breaks can be very helpful.

Finding ways to meet project goals efficiently and handle your work deadlines with ease can help reduce stress and double your productivity and improve your health. Making deadlines is certainly less stressful than not doing so. Achieving that goal may require changing some work and living patterns and even asking for assistance from other employees. Rock posted a meme of Gomez performing at one of her “Revival” shows while donning a golden leotard similar to one Beyonce Knowles has been sporting on her “Formation” world tour.

“When you buy your formation tickets on craigslist,” so the caption read.

The meme seems to be suggesting that Selena’s concerts are only for those who can’t afford tickets to Beyonce’s gigs. Rock agreed with this as he added in his tweet, “This is true.”

Fans of Selena, of course, weren’t happy when they

found out about Rock’s tweet.

“This is so unnecessary. What has she done to you? This is disgraceful and disrespectful to a very successful woman,” one Twitter user called out Rock. “The only truth here is that u are irrelevant and in desperate need of attention,” another added.

Akshay Kumar: ‘People called me furniture’

e is riding high on critical acclaim and box office success with his recent films but actor Akshay Kumar says there was a time when people used to call him “furniture” based on his performances.

Earlier this year, the actor was praised for his role in Airlift as a businessman who carries out the evacuation of Indians based in Kuwait during an invasion crisis.

The 48-year-old Baby star then acted in a comic role in the recently released

“Housefull 3”.

When asked about how he strikes a balance between diverse roles, Akshay told reporters, “I like the scripts, I just go ahead with it. Anybody can do it. When I came in the industry I was called a furniture when I used to act. So if I can do it,

anyone can do it.”

Amitabh Bachchan: ‘Acting simple on screen is difficult’

ollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan today said that he found it challenging playing an extremely simple and realistic character in the upcoming Hindi thriller film “TE3N”.

“My role is very simple and that of a normal person from the middle class. I am playing my age. But being simple in front of the camera is very difficult and challenging,” said Amitabh Bachchan.

Director Ribhu Dasgupta had told him that he did not want extraneous behaviour in his acting.

“Sometimes when I felt it (acting) was okay, he would come and tell me to tone it down,” Bachchan, 73, said.

In the entire film, the effort was to show things as real without going over the top. “The producer didn’t want to shoot in sets and so we

shot in real locations.”

“Everything looks natural. After I saw the film it was very comforting to see something like this done,” Big B said.

He praised the younger lot of actors like Irrfan Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt for bringing simplicity to their acting. “Even after 47 years in the industry I am still learning. There is a lot to learn from the young generation.

Every day is a learning experience,” he said.

He recently received the winner’s trophy at the National Senior Championship race at Leonora track, where he was also awarded for “personal best time”. Leather crafting A fading art form lives on in the work of Allan Petty Jr.

A

llan Petty Jr. is a multitalented individual who finds solace in leather crafting.

Born from a desire for unique leather accessories, Allan started creating pieces infused with art and style.

“I was inspired to do leather craft after I started out buying and selling leather bracelets to promote a musical group I was a part of, Cross Carriers. I wanted the pieces to be unique, so I started designing. However, those designs and specifications did not satisfy my requirements, so I invested in some basic tools,” Allan recalled in an interview with Sunday Times Magazine.

On commenting on his artistic background, Allan mentioned that he is self-taught and that his talent is inherent. He pointed out that his cousin Samuel Medas is a popular musical artiste, and also that he recently found out that some of his family members were involved in the arts.

“Most of the leather craft techniques and designing I discovered on my own. Also I received tips from a friend Trichelle Bollers, and I also do online research to gather information on how to perfect my craft,” he stated.

Allan’s handcrafted pieces include wallets, watch bands, leather cuffs/ bracelets, belts, and bands.

The craftsman makes bespoke pieces, but especially enjoys making leather bracelets “mostly because it is unique” and he “gets to customize them nicely for each customer”.

Other than crafting leather, Allan enjoys singing and composing “positive music”. Notably, he is a gospel singer who is currently studying mechanical engineering at the University of Guyana.

Additionally, he is a student attachment at the Guyana Defence Force (Air Station London).

Apple overhauls App Store A

pple is instituting two big changes to help level the playing field for app developers and put more money in their pockets at the same time.

Phil Schiller, Apple marketing chief, in an interview with The Verge explained that developers will now have the option to sell subscriptions to customers for any of their apps.

This could radically change the landscape of the App Store system and the expectations of iOS users that are used to paying a few dollars for an app, or at most US$9.99 if they’re really committed.

In return, developers will get a larger share of revenue — if they manage to keep customers long-term. Under the current revenue-sharing model, developers get a 70

percent cut, while Apple gets the remaining 30 percent.

Under the new rules, that split will still stay in place if developers decide not to deploy app subscriptions. But if developers do offer subscriptions, and customers stick around for at least a year, Apple’s cut drops down to just 15 percent.

While Apple might seemingly be taking a hit by halving its cut of revenue, it stands to gain in the long-run with continued revenue from subscriptions instead of a one-time purchase.

As for developers, they have an incentive to continually update their apps and provide an enjoyable experience for users to keep them around long enough to qualify for the larger 85 percent slice of the revenue pie.

Google considers beaming high-speed internet to homes wirelessly

lphabet chairman, Eric Schmidt, announced last Wednesday at Google’s annual shareholder’s meeting that the company is planning to bring wireless internet technology to consumers.

This is the first publicly transparent announcement from Google’s newest parent company, Alphabet, recently established as a tech conglomerate that will own the household brand along with its other business subsidiaries.

The restructuring allows Google heads Larry Page and Sergey Brin, now Alphabet’s CEO and president, respectively, to work on more elaborate and “moonshot” undertakings that were previously limited by investors, such as the provision of wireless internet.

The Alphabet chairman also reaffirmed that the company was “serious” in this undertaking and disclosed that he had met with executive officers on Tuesday to discuss the technology. Present at the meeting reportedly were CEO Page and

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Ruth Porat.

According to Schmidt, the recent advances in technology have allowed the introduction of better ways to provide internet means to its consumers.

Specifically, the improvements done on semiconductors allows the company to set up “point to point” wireless solutions that accurately target households. This makes network foundations less expensive than laying down cables.

“These point to point solutions are now cheaper than digging up your garden and so forth,” Schmidt adds.

“One of the things that is intriguing about wireless is that it allows you [to] reach houses and users that are in lower density settings — where fibre becomes too expensive,” the Access CEO Craig Barratt explained.

This technological breakthrough is a product of the company’s goal to increase the availability of high-speed internet while at the same time maintaining costs at a relatively low price. (Tech Times)

Adidas runs with first batch of ocean plastic footwear

T

he first batch of Adidas footwear to be produced using ocean plastic has been made available. The sportswear brand partnered with Parley for the Oceans to create the Adidas x Parley, which is made with plastics collected in coastal areas of the Maldives, as well as illegal deep-sea gill nets.

Adidas announced its partnership with Parley for the Oceans in April 2015 and showcased the Adidas x Parley at Parley Talks ‘Oceans. Climate. Life.’ later in the year. The two organizations devised a means of turning plastic reclaimed from the ocean into technical yarn fibres that can be used for making performance products.

The recycled plastic material produced has been christened Parley Ocean Plastic and is used for the upper part of the Adidas x Parley. In addition, the shoe has been manufactured using Adidas’ Tailored Fibre Technology production method, which allows designs to be customized to the needs of the eventual wearer.

The Adidas x Parley is said to be one of a number of products that Adidas is now able to produce using Parley Ocean Plastic. One of the main goals of the partnership, however, has been to develop and support new technologies to up-cycle ocean plastic debris, thereby providing a use for plastic waste that is retrieved from the oceans.

There are 50 pairs of the Adidas x Parley being made available to begin, but they cannot simply be bought. To get their hands, or feet, on a pair of the shoes, individuals must enter a video into an Instagram competition that shows how they pledge to avoid single-use plastic items and to support Parley’s Ocean Plastic Program. Participants have until the end of July to enter.

Adidas says the use of Parley Ocean Plastic will be phased into its product categories. The first commercial footwear made using the material is expected to be made available to buy in the second half of this year.

Outdoor spaces, outdoor fabrics

Broccoli and Shrimp-Stuffed Potatoes

O

utdoor patio furniture needs to stand up to the weather – as well as children, pets and even outdoor pests – and still make a focal statement rather than display drab, utilitarian colours. How is that even possible? With hardy outdoor upholstery fabrics in a variety of bold colours and comfortable textures…

Ingredients

Fabrics, especially in light solid colours, must be durable enough to easily wash off muddy feet and spilled drinks or foods

2 large baking potatoes 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 onion, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups broccoli, 1 inch pieces 1⁄4 cup water 1 cup diced cooked shrimp 1⁄2 cup sour cream Salt Pepper 3 tbsp. fresh parmesan cheese, grated 1 tbsp. butter

Method

Preheat oven to 400°F. Wash the potatoes, prick them and bake in preheated oven for about an hour or until tender. Set aside.

In a 10-inch skillet, heat oil over medium heat.

Add the onion and cook for 5-7 minutes until golden.

Add the garlic and broccoli and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

Add 1/4 cup water, cover and let steam for 2-3 minutes or until broccoli is crisp tender (if water not evaporated at this point, pour off any water left).

When cool enough to handle, halve the potatoes lengthwise.

Scoop out the flesh into a bowl, leaving a thin shell.

Mash the potato. Add the broccoli mixture, shrimp, sour cream and salt and pepper to taste. Stir gently until mixture is combined.

Spoon the filling into the potato skin shell and transfer to a well-buttered shallow baking dish.

Spoon any leftover filling around the potato shells. Sprinkle the top of the potatoes with Parmesan cheese and dot with butter.

Bake in oven for 15-20 minutes, until heated through. Serves 2

If you have to ripen bananas in a hurry – say overnight – store bananas in a paper bag and add a piece of fruit, like an apple, avocado or pear, to the bag. These fruits also emit ethylene, a gaseous hormone that quickens ripening, and will hasten the process.

ou cook… oil and grease spatter… they get heated and reheated and soon your stove burners have a disgusting coating that will not scrub off. Take about 1/4 cup of ammonia and seal it up with one of the burners in a large Ziploc bag. Leave it outside on a cookie sheet or large tray overnight. (You can leave it inside, but just in case the bag springs a leak or something…) It is the fumes from the ammonia that dissolves all of the grease and hardened oil. You don’t need to soak it, it just needs to be sealed up with the ammonia fumes. When it’s done sitting, wipe clean with a sponge. Please remember: NEVER mix ammonia with anything that has bleach in it. It creates toxic fumes. In fact, don’t play chemist and try to mix ammonia with anything, period.

Barbarism

I

n its general sense Barbarism refers to an incorrect use of language; specifically it considers a word “improper”; a “non-standard word, expression or pronunciation”.

Barbarism has been described as being associated with a lack of intelligence, lack of understanding, and mis – or non – communication.

While we may all know what the word means, they may not be acceptable in certain circumstances.

Take the words “ain’t”, “nuff” and “mudder”.

Considered barbarisms, you won’t be allowed to use “ain’t” and “nuff” in your school or university writings, nor in your report at work.

Similarly, when making a speech academically or at a formal event, pronouncing “mother” as “mudder” would cause some to titter. However, among friends and perhaps family they would all be accepted. Barbarism though, usually refers to errors in written language.

Deciding what is a barbarism is always controversial among descriptive and prescriptive linguists (more on this later), and often what may be considered a barbarism may soon become accepted in dictionaries and considered “normal” pronunciation.

he torrent duck (Merganetta) lives and nests near fastflowing waters in the Andes of the west coast of South America, from sea-level in Chile to the southern extremes of the continent, up to 4,500 metres high.

They occur in six subspecies: columbiana, from Venezuela to north Ecuador; leucogenis from central Ecuador to central Peru; turneri, south Peru; garleppi Bolivia; berlepschi, north Chile and northwest Argentina; and armata throughout most of the Andes of Chile and Argentina.

They feed on invertebrates, aquatic insects and larvae, along with plant material, seeds, small fish and crabs, which they dive to retrieve.

The birds are among the most powerful swimmers and divers of the bird Pair of (Merganetta armata) world, and although they can fly, they usually only fly short distances. Males and females carry different colours.

nown as Ischigualasto from the native Quechua tribe of Argentina meaning “the place where you put the moon”, the Valley of the Moon is found in the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, located some 300 miles from the city of San Juan, Argentina.

The parched and rocky desert of the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is famous among scientists for its abundance of fossils of dinosaurs, fish, amphibians, reptiles, plants and tree trunks from 200 – 250 million years ago.

The 223 square mile park that is an UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds temperatures that can reach extremes of -10C to 45C. It once held lush lands and plenty of water, hence the abundance of fossils.

Its numerous rock formations created by the constant wind erosion have been given names that best describe their shape, size or colour, such as ‘The Mushroom’, ‘The Worm’, ‘Red Ravines’ and the ‘Painted Valley’.

Scientists who regret their greatest inventions Arthur Galston: Invention: Agent Orange Arthur Galston was an American botanist who devoted his career to helping plants grow. He focused on synthesizing triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), a hormone that sped up the flowering of soybeans, but would defoliate them in higher concentrations.

What he didn’t expect was that biological warfare scientists would find his research on TIBA and use it to formulate a chemical weapon. What they created was Agent Orange, and it was used to destroy enemy crops in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It also caused birth defects for hundreds of thousands of children, and lifelong health problems for an equal number of adults.

Galston regretted that his research had been used that way and lobbied to end its use from 1965 until its ban in 1971. He felt guilty about how his research was used for the rest of his life, even though he knew he wasn’t to blame for its misuse.

As he told The New York Times, “You know, nothing that you do in science is guaranteed to result in benefits for mankind. Any discovery, I believe, is morally neutral and it can be turned either to constructive ends or destructive ends. That’s not the fault of science.”

Mikhail Kalashnikov: Invention: AK-47 All Mikhail Kalashnikov wanted to do was defend his country. To that end he enlisted in the army and, when he heard his comrades complaining about the ineffective and dangerous rifles they were forced to use, he combined his interest in weaponry with his skill in machinery to design a better one.

The fruit of that labour was the Avtomat Kalashnikova Model 1947 - what we know as the AK-47. It is “the world’s most prolific and effective combat weapon, a device so cheap and simple that it can be bought in

many countries for less than the cost of a live chicken,” as the Washington Post summarizes.

Unfortunately, when terrorist groups and other violent factions found ways to bootleg production of the AK-47, Kalashnikov wished he would have made something more helpful, telling The Guardian “I’m proud of my invention, but I’m sad that it is used by terrorists ... I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work — for example a lawn mower.”

As 100 million of them were produced by 2009, half of which were counterfeit, Kalashnikov became so concerned by the bloodshed that he wrote the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to beg forgiveness, saying that his spiritual pain and heartache was unbearable and asking if as its inventor he was responsible for the death of people.

The church absolved him and thanked him for his service. He died 6 months later.

Other scientists who publicly spoke of their regret include Kamran Loghman, who invented weapons-grade pepper spray: oleoresin capsicum (OC) in 1960 which was developed as a dog deterrent for the US Postal service to keep its carriers from being bitten on their routes. But when he saw OC being used against peaceful protesters in 2011, he was shocked. “The use was just absolutely out of ordinary…I feel it’s my civic duty to explain to the public that this is not what pepper spray was developed for,” he told Democracy Now! A gifted physicist with an interest in nuclear motion and Hindu spirituality, J. Robert Oppenheimer, inventor of the atom-

ic bomb, explained in a special TV broadcast that at ‘Trinity’, the very first hydrogen bomb test, everyone knew “the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent…”

After seeing that power, Oppenheimer pushed for international control of atomic energy, and while he voiced strong opposition to the development of the atomic bomb, his communist political ties prompted the U.S. government to revoke his security clearance.

That ended his advocacy and forced him to refocus his research. He never forgot that outcome, though, and remained disappointed by it for the rest of his days.

Orville Wright is well-known for the airplane invention but when he saw the destruction it could do during WW1, he wrote a letter to the Aircraft Production Board saying, “The aeroplane has made war so terrible that I do not believe any country will again care to start a war.” Then after seeing the destruction wrought by bombers in World War II, he realized the inevitability of the invention’s use and lamented its creation.

As he told the press before his death, “We [he and Wilbur] dared to hope we had invented something that would bring lasting peace to the earth. But we were wrong.” (bigthink)

ack in December, ocean photographers Tim Samuel and Franny Plumridge were freediving in Byron Bay, off the east coast of Australia, when Samuel took a picture of a yellow fish stuck inside a translucent jellyfish.

In his years of photographing marine life, Samuel hadn’t seen a similar scene before. The fish’s tail was sticking outside the back of the jelly, so it was able to propel the creature forward.

Over the 20 minutes that Samuel and Plumridge watched in curiosity and amazement, the fish/jellyfish wobbled and swam in circles. The fish knocked the jelly off balance and pushed it from side to side in the water. At some points, the duo just stopped moving.

“I’d never seen anything like it before,” Samuel says.

Rob Condon, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, which houses the Jellyfish Database Initiative, tells National Geographic in an email:

“The importance of these types of associations are poorly understood but jellies are likely providing key ecosystem services that benefit the fish species in this regard.”

Lisa-Ann Gershwin, a jellyfish taxonomist, who has discovered about 200 species of jellyfish, also notes that it’s “totally normal” for fish to use jellies for feeding, protection, and locomotion.

Culum Brown, an associate professor in biological sciences from Macquarie University, in Sydney, Australia, who specializes in fish behaviour and cognition tells Discovery News, “As weird as this may seem, juvenile trevally [fish], and also some leatherjackets [fish], are often found inside jellies. They are immune to the stingers and thus use them for protection.”

“They also scavenge off the food captured by the jelly,” he added. “They may even be able to eat the jelly arms.”
