Bright Horizons Family Home

T

he Bright Horizons Family Home, a nonprofit organisation, provides support and loving care for children who were abandoned or abused by their parents.

The home, located in Kuru Kururu, provides a shelter for children of all ages. Children depend on the Family Home for clothing, food, shelter, medical care, and education.

Until recently, the Family Home was operated by Joseph and his wife, Doreen Livan. Doreen sadly passed away in December 2012, but Joseph continues the work of taking care of the children. Joseph is the head of a six-person board responsible for the Family Home.

Children from the Family Home are educated at various schools, but this was not always the case. In the past, before they received the Some of the children with loving supporters of the home

was taken into the home as a child, said she is very grateful to the Livans for providing a home for her.

Consequently, an adult now, she continues to live at the home where she volunteers her time to the children there.

“Joseph and the late Doreen Livan were always fond of children and providing for them. The home was established in 1997.

We now have eight girls and nine boys from five years, who came into the home as babies, to teenagers. They are from different backgrounds.

Some were on the streets, aban-

goer and loved children.

Opening a home for children was her lifelong dream.

“She was a strong Christian.

I wasn’t.

However, I later became a Christian. My wife was a Sunday school teacher and the children loved to be with her. When our church called us into fulltime service, we were placed in Haruni and were given a children’s home to run. I guess it was our calling due to our love for children, regardless of their race. We didn’t have children of our own so being among them brought happiness to our lives. One day we were coming from a meeting and my wife told me she had a vision to open a children’s home in Kuru Kururu and this we did. Many of our children who came to us as babies are now adults. These have migrated and gone on to great things,” Joseph recalled.

Depending on the school, they have specific uniforms they must wear and is an additional cost. Also, transportation to school is by bus or taxi, which exploited the children by overcharging them. Succeeding in raising money, the Family Home bought a bus. It is used to ferry the children to school, into town, to medical appointments, and provides fair and low-cost transportation to village children to help pay for gas and maintain the bus.

In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Sharon, who

The Family Home, according to Sharon, welcomes support from kind-hearted individuals in areas such as monetary donations, school and medical supplies.

The Horticultural Society of Guyana (HSG) was founded in 1995 by Judith Inniss and Sheik Nasseer after the closure of the “club” some years before, and is affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society based in England, the head of all horticultural societies worldwide.

The society’s mission is to establish and give guidance on maintenance of gardens at various places; to arrange horticulture exhibitions, lectures and workshops, and, on request, visit gardens to assist in further-

Apart from hosting the annual shows, the Horticultural Society of Guyana engages in a number of other activities in an effort to promote and fulfil its objectives.

Some of these include the landscaping at Umana Yana; planting bougainvillea in the compound of the Palms; partially landscaping the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, and creating a Rock Garden in the Botanical Gardens. There is also a Mother’s Day visit and presentation of fresh floral arrangements to mothers at the various hospitals who gave birth on that day.

The society recently held their 19th show at Umana Yana in March. It was a huge success, but the members would like to see an increase in attendance.

uring the rainy season, the Rupununi is a haven for our slithering friends, snakes. When one thinks of a snake the only thing that may come to mind is venom. Poison that will leave you incapacitated. However, not all snakes are poisonous.

Imagine yourself in the Rupununi during rainy season. You want to travel to a nearby village to see a friend, so naturally you need to go by boat. As you navigate the flooded forest along the way, you manoeuvre around and between the large trunks of trees that

You are suddenly brought back to reality by a low hanging branch that you must duck your head underneath. As you lower your head towards your knees, you spot something moving slowly away from you along the branch. The dark bands running along its back contrast with its gray coloration. A beam of light breaks through the trees and you recognize the shine of its iridescent scales.

They are everywhere

Next, take yourself right to Yupukari village in the Rupununi. It is early in the morning, but you arise

stretch high into the canopy. For an instant, you lose yourself in the thought that only two months earlier you had hiked over the roots of the trees in this very area.

But now, the rains have come and where you once hiked is now covered by more than 20 feet of water, so you must travel by boat.

from your night’s slumber feeling the urge to exercise your mind. You decide to make your way to the village library to borrow a book. Wondering what adventure awaits your imagination, you make your way past the football fields, the village well and the school, but when you arrive at the

library you see that it is still dark inside. The morning sun has not yet realized its full potential, and clouds are keeping the sky a shade of grey. But when you poke your head inside, you realize that the library is not silent, as you immediately see village librarians moving about and preparing for another busy day.

You decide on fiction, so you make your way straight to that section. You reach for a book that catches your interest, but as you pull the book off the shelf, something else catches your eye.

At first it seems that a cord or rope has been left at the back of the shelf, as it is coiled neatly in a circle with the end folded up over the top. As you move in closer to investigate, you see the red flash of a flickering forked tongue.

You decide to walk with a group of your friends from the village up to a nearby bush island. These areas are a wooded oasis in what is otherwise the sea of grass that comprises the savannas. You know that this habitat provides cover for a wide variety of species and you have come with bow and arrow in search of game.

As you enter the forest, the darkness of the understory provides a stark contrast to the bright sun of the savannah, and you squint briefly while your eyes adjust. You let your mind wander considering what you might come across – maybe Paca (laba) or Armadillo (kaigon). You think that either would make for a good day’s hunt.

You keep your eyes trained low to the ground and move slowly and quietly side by side with your friends, when you hear movement in the leaves litter nearby. You stop and fix your eyes on the spot where you heard the sound.

As you listen closely, you notice that this sound is not the intermittent snap and crack of footsteps, but rather the continuous sound of something moving back and forth while maintaining contact with the ground.

You spot some movement within the leaves and you move closer for a better look. You stop in your tracks when you see a slender head poke up from the leaves and you make contact with circular unblinking eyes.

Knowledge and respect

Of course, the stories described above revolve around common encounters with snakes. The common thread in all these stories is that they deal with species of snake that are harmless to people (Amazon tree boa, cat-eyed snake, brown racer) and that in the end, the snakes in question were simply either avoided all together or were caught and released into the bush.

Every species of snake is different and should be treated as such, but many have beautiful colouration, exhibit amazing behaviour and have interesting natural histories.

The key to a safe interaction with a snake is always knowledge and respect.

Snakes certainly do have a reputation of catching us off-guard, and it is probably this type of encounter that frequently leads to poor outcomes for the snakes.

But it is also this attribute that has made snakes so successful. It is the ability to hide and patiently wait for prey along a frequented path that has allowed an animal with no legs to colonize nearly every kind of habitat on the planet.

It is this remarkable ability to not only survive, but thrive without limbs that should earn snakes our respect. This is not to men-

tion the fact that the majority of most snakes’ diets are made up of rodents, a group of animals that is responsible for more damage to food crops worldwide than any other. Snakes actually provide us with a critical service in terms of our own food security by keeping rodent populations in check something that we should keep in mind when we come across them.

Understanding snakes

Stories of encounters with snakes have been told and re-told so many times that they almost seem the same and that the ending is almost inevitable. We have gotten to the point where a fear of snakes seems to be an accepted norm and that the correct course of action should be to kill them on sight. But does this have to be the way? Should it be?

At the end of the day it comes down to whether you are willing to write your own story the next time you encounter a snake; or will you go down the path that most have travelled?

of snake out there that can be dangerous to people, but there are far more species that are not. And yes, a snake could bite you, but you are much more likely to be bitten by your family dog, or even by a family member, than you are to be bitten by a snake.

You may encounter a snake on the road, along a path, in your school or even in your home. So how will your story end? Will you appreciate a creature that has survived on this planet for millions of years from a safe distance and then go on your way? Will you ask questions and seek out answers about the snakes in your area so that the next time you come across one you immediately know how to react? With the benefit that snakes provide in terms of our own food security, this is the type of knowledge that we can all benefit from.

r Julie Doobay, of Guyanese heritage, is a wellness-focused chiropractor whose personal journey is a unique and powerful story about learning to trust in the restorative capacity of the human body and in the power of focus and determination to overcome incredible odds.

In 2004, while on the path to her dream of becoming a chiropractor, during her last year of chiropractic college, a debilitating brain infection left Doobay in a hospital bed, a quadriplegic, on a respirator and eating from a feeding tube.

Her aspirations to be a chiropractor were cut short and all her attention was focused on survival and re-

and mobility went from being bed-ridden, to a wheelchair, to a walker, to a cane, to independent walking. She was advised that she should give up on her dream to be a chiropractor, but in 2009, after five years of absence from school, she returned to Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College to complete her degree. In June 2010, she graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic.

For five years, doctors, nurses, specialists and others told her what she could not do, but Doobay chose to believe in, and act upon, the strength and power of an inner voice that said, “That is not okay with me!” Her sheer desire to live what she

It took five long years of intensive therapy, pain, frustration and effort, but once again, she proved them wrong as her capacity

Upon graduation in 2010, Doobay chose to specialise in Network Spinal Analysis chiropractic care and to focus on helping

others to achieve a greater sense of well-being and to realise they can be so much more than what they believe is possible. In just a few short years of working with patients at BodyMind Wellness Studio in Canada, which offers innovative educational programmes to provide insight and guidance to patients and practice members in their journey of selfdiscovery, self-awareness and self-empowerment, Doobay purchased the practice and now brings her unique passion, perspective and vision to the studio.

In an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Doobay said her father was born in Guyana and her mother in India.

Doobay’s parents met in Ottawa, Canada – where she was born and raised. On her first birthday, Doobay was brought to Guyana to meet her grandparents but have not returned since.

“At the time of the infection it was diagnosed as a brain infection - Acute Disseminating Encephalomyelitis. Eight years later, it was confirmed that I had Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. There were many working diagnoses, so I didn't know what I was in store for. Since the doctors didn't know what I had I figured that they weren't certain about my prognosis. I was told many things ranging from never being able to walk again to never being able to practice as a chiropractor. I just knew that I would regret not even trying to get better. There were many instances when I felt like giving up and that I was angry, frustrated or sad. Deep down inside I kept asking myself what was the worst thing that could happen by trying and pushing myself,” she revealed.

Overcoming her illness was not an easy feat, but with the concrete support from her family, Doobay tri-

umphed.

“Both of my parents devoted all of their time and energy to me and my recovery. My family practically lived at the hospital for the first three months that I was in the hospital.

My mom spent most of her days taking care of me and driving me to various medical appointments. While struggling with my mobility and independence, my sister tried to make sure that I had a social life and got me out of the house.

When I decided to return to Chiropractic College in 2009 (in Toronto), my father would drive to Toronto and back to Ottawa every few weeks so that I could spend some time at home.

I had a lot of love and support, which encouraged me to keep trying.

“I now see life as an opportunity. You may not be able to choose the circumstances of your life but you can choose how you respond to life. Life never turns out the way you had imagined but when you open yourself to new possibilities things you never imagined do become possible.”

‘Cricket Lovely Cricket’

xtract of an interview with Colin Babb, June 2014, Georgetown, Guyana. Babb is the author of ‘They gave the crowd plenty fun’. He has worked as a journalist for the BBC and as a radio and online content producer.

PP: We devote a lot of time and attention to cricket, here in Guyana, in the Caribbean and other cricket-loving places but the list on the literature of the game is somewhat meagre.

So this book, ‘They gave the crowd plenty fun’, is a welcomed addition.

I am intrigued by the title – what’s in the name?

CB: I sort of borrowed those words for the title of my book from a song penned

by Lord Beginner who was a Trinidadian calypso-singer and he penned that song after the WI won their first test match in England at Lord’s in June 1950.

PP: This interview then is a sort of an anniversary.

CB: Yes, come to think about it.

So Lord Beginner wrote what is popularly called ‘Cricket Lovely Cricket’.

PP: What’s the song true title?

CB: ‘Victory Test Match’.

PP: I know only the popular phrase, ‘Cricket Lovely Cricket’.

CB: Well, some of the words go like this: ‘They gave the crowd plenty fun/

The bowling was super fine/ Ramadhin and Valentine...’

I borrowed those words because they were very symbolic to a lot of people from the Caribbean living in England cricket and the game meant a lot to them, not only for political and cultural reasons but for the sense of getting together and having fun. So that is why I wanted to have the word ‘fun’ in the title.

But the book itself is really about the connection between cricket and the Caribbean community living in Britain which has a very long and rich history.

And it is not about the game only; it is about what happens beyond the game, the

significance culturally...

PP: ‘Beyond the boundary’ CB: I didn’t want to say it because I didn’t want to describe my book in the same breath with the great C. L. R. James; I wouldn’t be so presumptuous but a friend of mine said when he bought the book, he put it next to James’ book so in that respect, I am honoured.

PP: What motivated you to write, ‘They gave the crowd plenty fun’?

CB: Cricket, West Indian cricket, is one of my lifelong interests.

PP: Started where and when?

CB: As early as I was able walk and talk. As a young boy growing up in Britain of Caribbean de-

scent, born in Britain...

PP: The connection to Guyana?

CB: My mother was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and migrated in the early 60s like many others in Guyana and the Caribbean did. Even though I was brought up in Britain, I was always aware of the three W’s – Worrell, Walcott, and Weekes; Ramadhin and Valentine; Hall and Griffith... and growing up in a Guyanese household, I was particularly aware Kanhai and Lloyd. My mother went to Chatham High School in Georgetown, was a year

below Clive Lloyd, I’m not sure there were friends but that occurrence was usually mentioned.

PP: As a sort of honour – having attended the same school with Lloyd.

CB : Yes. My first experience with cricket was actually watching cricket on television – the 1973 tour when the West Indies came to England, I remember that very, very well because that was the first time a colour television came into the house and suddenly I discovered that the ball was red and the grass green. It was a

wonderful discovery, the discovery of colour television.

But I remembered that tour very well that was when I connected to the West Indies team as a second generation of Caribbean descent in Britain.

That team was led

by Rohan Kanhai and the West Indies won that tour – I can never forget that, the scene of jubilation and all that at Lord’s and the Oval. The jubilation of watching a team coming from the West Indies representing West Indians in the Diaspora...who were at the time struggling with the usual minority migrants’ problems...

PP: Finding proper jobs, housing, getting a proper education...

CB: Racial discrimination...

PP: Some publishing houses were birthed from those very issues like New Beacon Books, Bogle-L’ouverture Publications and Hansib Publications, giving the minorities a voice.

Of course, not everyone has the cash to pay off a large portion of their loans, and it will probably take five-plus years after graduation to get to the point when you can even consider it. But once you have a healthy bank account, don't wait too long to start paying off big chunks of those more expensive student loans.

Give back—on your own terms.

Companies know that we want to make a difference in the world, and they want to profit off of that desire.

That's why so many of them are cashing in on the lucrative "green" industry by claiming to be environmentally friendly when they're not. It's so common that it has a name: "greenwashing." Don't be fooled by all-natural labelling; investigate why the company is claiming to be good for the earth before spending your money. A similar lesson applies to giving to charitable donations.

W

hite-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, the smallest members of the North American deer family, are found from southern Canada to South America. They are common in the cerrado savannah areas of the Rupununi in Guyana.

So associated with the unique grasslands of the Rupununi, they are referred to locally as ‘Savannah Deer’, which differentiates them from the two species of Brocket Deer that are found in forested areas.

In the heat, they typically inhabit fields and meadows using clumps of broad-leaved and coniferous forests for shade.

Adult white-tails have reddish-brown coats, which may fade to a duller grayish-brown. In North America, male deer, called bucks, are easily recognisable in the summer and fall by their prominent set of antlers, which are grown annually and fall off in the winter. Only the bucks grow antlers, which bear a number of tines, or sharp points. During the mating season, also called the rut, bucks fight over territory by using their antlers in sparring matches.

Female deer, called does, give birth to one to three young at a time, usually in May or June and after a gestation period of seven months. Young deer, called fawns, wear a reddish-brown coat with white spots that helps them blend in with the forest.

Rabbits are cute and can make great pets, but they can also spell trouble for farmers. Rabbits and hares are not rodents. They belong to the order of lagomorphs, in the Leporidae family. There are about 50 species of leporids, and half of these live in North America. Where they were not found naturally, rabbits and hares were introduced by humans. Today, leporids can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

Rabbits and hares have excellent hearing and a keen sense of smell. Their strong back legs allow them to move by hopping. The eyes are located on the sides of the head, allowing them a wider view of the world.

The pika The pika is another lagomorph. It doesn't look much like a rabbit or a hare. It looks more like a hamster, but it shares many of its cousinsʼ habits. Pikas can be found in the mountains of the northwest United States and Canada, and also in the northern regions of Russia, Asia and Europe. They make their homes in rock piles and crevices, living in large groups. Pikas are vegetarians and spend the summer collecting food for the winter.

Back in March, Cole seemingly confirmed their separation during an interview with Power 105.1's "The Breakfast Club".

Jay-Z, Beyonce's joint tour is not struggling

here have been reports claiming that the ticket sales of Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles' co-headlining "On the Run" tour are not selling well. However, sources close to the tour have just told Billboard that the reports are not true.

According to the sources, the tour that only includes 19 shows has already made $86 million in ticket sales and is on course to make $100 million with around 850,000 tickets sold. Live Nation, which produced the tour, additionally says in a statement that several shows are already sold out with strong VIP and platinum ticket sales.

"The 'On the Run' Tour opens next Wednesday in Miami's Sun Life Stadium to over 48,000 fans, then rolls to Cincinnati to a sellout crowd of more than 37,000 fans, and on July 1st more than 50,000 fans will pack Boston's Gillette Stadium," the statement reads.

"With sellout nights across North America, these first three shows are indica-

tive of the strong demand. Overall, the tour has sold well over 750,000 tickets, grossing more than $90 million, and has unprecedented VIP and Platinum ticket sales," it adds.

The session was conducted at Mukesh Chhabra's newly-launched acting studio in Mumbai.

Speaking about his training methods, Bajpayee added: "I am not an easy teacher and my expectations are pretty high."

From over 1,000 applications, 48 students were shortlisted to attend the workshop.

Aspirin 'not best' for preventing heart problem

T

he National Institute of Health and Care Excellence says bloodthinning drugs like warfarin are better for those with atrial fibrillation, which can increase a person's risk of stroke.

Experts say most doctors are already doing this.

The advice will affect hundreds of thousands of patients.

Atrial fibrillation (AF), which causes an irregular heartbeat, is the most common heart rhythm problem, affecting up to 800,000 people - roughly one in 100 - in the UK. In AF, the heart cannot work as well as it should and blood clots can form, which,

in turn, increases the risk of a stroke.

Aspirin has been used for years to help protect patients from strokes, but mounting evidence suggests the drug's benefits are too small compared with other treatments.

The guidelines acknowledge this - it is the first time they will have been updated since they were originally issued in 2006.

The advice to switch from aspirin to a blood-thinning drug such as warfarin instead should prevent thousands of strokes.

Newer anticoagulants other than warfarin may be most suitable as they do not require regular monitoring,

says NICE. Experts say if aspirin is to be stopped, it should be stopped gradually and only under the advice of a doctor.

Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation are both common and preventable but only if the abnormal heart rhythm is identified in the first place and if effective drugs are given to prevent blood-clot development.

"The revised NICE guidance reflects accumulating evidence that warfarin and the newer anticoagulants are much more effective than aspirin at preventing strokes.

"This does not mean that aspirin is not important and effective at preventing heart attacks and strokes in other circumstances. Patients who are unclear on whether or not they should continue to take aspirin should speak to their doctor."

Prof Peter Elwood, an expert at Cardiff University, warned it could be unsafe to suddenly stop taking aspirin. "If aspirin is to be stopped, it should be stopped gradually," he said. (BBC)

If you check out the packaging, you may be surprised to find that many veggie burgers have more calories than a beef patty and might also have extra chemicals to make up for taste and color. Limit packaged vegan foods to no more than once a week.

Forget about the protein

Animal-based foods tend to be high in protein, so you should be sure to replace them with high-protein vegan alternatives.

Beans, soymilk, tofu, peanut butter and oatmeal are all good sources of protein.

Just eat raw food

Method: To make pastry, mix margarine into flour until well combined. Add 3 tbsp of cold water and combine until the flour forms a dough. Chill for at least half an hour.

Mix cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder and mustard to make the filling. Set aside.

Roll pastry until thin; about 1/8 of an inch in thickness. Cut into 4 by 4 squares. Roll each square out just a little bit more.

Divide the cheese filling evenly and spread on each square of pastry leaving a 1/2 inch border.

Mix egg with 1 tbsp of water to make an egg wash. Brush the edges of the pastry with egg wash. Take one end of the pastry and roll over filling until you reach the other end. Seal.

Using a fork press both ends to seal. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet seam side down and brush with egg wash. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 mins until golden brown.

Yields : 8 cheese rolls

Chinese dog-eating festival sparks activists' ire

yearly festival in China that involves the eating of thousands of dogs has animal activists up in arms.

The Yulin Summer Solstice Dog Meat Festival, to begin on June 21 in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, includes lots of liquor and hot pots filled with dog meat. The festival is well-loved among Yulin residents, according to China Radio International.

Animal activists have called for the event to be cancelled, and one organization, Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, through crowdfunding has surpassed its goal and raised more than $20,000 to be put toward rescue of the dogs and tracking of people involved with illegal canine abduction.

Activist groups claim about 10,000 dogs were consumed during last year's festival and argue that dogs slaughtered for the event are either strays or were abducted from their rightful homes.

While Chinese officials say the dogs eaten during the festival are raised on dog farms specifically for that purpose, an animal rights lawyer in Beijing, An Xiang, said the official story is untrue: There are no such

dog farms, and the dogs are indeed strays or abducted pets.

Food safety and preparation fears are also at issue, particularly for the butchers who slaughter the animals. They risk being infected with rabies, as there is no period of quarantine for the dogs before they are shipped to the festival, even though there is just such a quarantine regulation on the books from China's Ministry of Agriculture.

Protests of the event have occurred around the festival for a number of years.

This year, Chinese celebrities such as pop performers Chen Kuna and Yang Mi have spoken out against the event.

Local restaurants in Yulin, meanwhile, have been advised that it's best to remove the word "dog" from signs facing streets, so as not to incite protests outside.

Supporters of the festival remain unmoved by the outcry from dog lovers. "It is our tradition and our right to eat dog meat.

If we are cruel and brutal, what about those who eat pork, beef and chicken?" Yulin resident Wei Zhengde told CRI. (Discovery News)

s soccer fans worldwide follow the wins and losses of their favorite teams in the World Cup, a new breed of animals is predicting the match outcomes. Actually several different breeds: First it was just a psychic octopus named Paul (in photo), but now a whole menagerie has gotten into the act.

It’s all in good fun — at least until people bet their hard-earned money on the pets’ picks — though there is a long tradition of people thinking that animals really do have some sort of psychic or prophetic powers, including of course a famous groundhog (usually wrongly) predicting the first day of spring.

The tradition of predicting the future based on animal behavior dates back millennia, and term for it is alectryomancy.

There are countless ancient omens derived from animals. For example encountering a black cat is widely believed to bring bad luck, as does hearing a bat squeak as it flies by. Other animals are said to bring good luck should you chance up them, including oxen, hedgehogs, bees, crickets, ladybugs, and squirrels.

As for the World Cup, even though Paul is gone other animals are at it. A

turtle named Big Head correctly predicted Brazil’s victory over Croatia in the opening game of the World Cup, swimming in a pool under a banner with both the Brazilian and the Croatian flags and heading toward the Brazilian side.

It should be noted that a review of the footage of Big Head’s pick reveals that there was a spinning, splashing soccer ball and a kneeling person — perhaps with food — just a few feet away on the side of the pool with the Brazilian flag, which may have unfairly drawn his attention.

There are various other World Cup predicting animals including a camel named Shaheen, an elephant named Nelly, a dog named Roy Dog-son, and of course Pele the Psychic Piranha.

Not everyone

is amused by the interest, though. Officials at a Chinese research park have forbidden panda cubs from being asked to predict sporting events, fearing it encouraged too much contact with avaricious human gamblers.

With rampant allegations of match-fixing in professional soccer, it is of course possible that Paul, Shaheen, Pele, and the others are making their correct predictions based upon insider information provided by organized crime syndicates. Yet we need not malign the reputations of these prophetic pets, for there may be a simpler explanation. Often these aeolian features will carve out dark tracks as they travel after blowing away the brighter surface dust and exposing the darker layers.

Through observations from orbit, recording the size and frequency of dust devils can help planetary scientists better understand the characteristics of the dynamic Mars atmosphere.

“Both Mars Orbiter Camera and HiRISE images in this general region have a fairly high rate of capturing dust devils (sometimes several in one image),” writes the HiRISE

science team in a recent update, “so acquiring images here in the right season has a good chance to help us obtain better measurements of these features.”

Despite their name, dust devils are angels that come to the rescue of solar paneled robots operating on the Martian surface.

Earlier this year, NASA Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity experienced a “cleaning event” that blew off much of the red dust that had stuck to the rover’s solar array, boosting the solar energy it received. From experience with Opportunity and sister rover Spirit (which operated until 2010), rover scientists know that dust devils will often blow over them, giving the lucky rovers a clean. cientists have discovered that a number of spider species catch and eat fish.

Spiders are traditionally viewed as predators of insects, but a new study suggests that eating fish is widespread among species that live near water.

In some cases, the arachnids used powerful poisons to kill fish that were much bigger than them.

Details of the study by a Swiss-Australian team appear in the academic journal Plos One. Martin Nyffeler from the University of Basel in Switzerland and Bradley Pusey from the University of Western Australia gathered and documented numerous incidents of spiders catching fish.

Their review of the evidence shows that spiders from as many as five families have been observed eating small fish in the wild and three more families contain species that catch fish under laboratory conditions.

These semi-aquatic spiders typically dwell at the fringes of shallow freshwater streams, ponds or swamps.

Some are capable of swimming, diving and walking on the water surface. But they generally have powerful neurotoxins and enzymes enabling them to kill and digest fish that are bigger and heavier than them.

Fish caught by the spiders were, on average, about twice as long as their arachnid predators.

"Our evidence suggests that fish might be an occasional prey item of substantial nutritional importance," said Dr Nyffeler.

Fish eating by spiders has been reported from all continents with the excep-

tion of Antarctica. Most incidents have been documented in North America, especially in the wetlands of Florida.

Here, semi-aquatic spiders have often been witnessed catching and eating small freshwater fish such as mosquito fish.

In order to catch its prey, the spider will typically anchor its hind legs to a stone or a plant, with its front legs resting on the surface of the water, ready to ambush.

The fish is then dragged to a dry place before the feeding process can begin. This usually lasts several hours. (BBC)

ne of the Mars’ most dramatic atmospheric features that can be spotted from orbit is the dust devil, a whirlwind of dust that forms from sunlight heating the ground. Although dust devil tracks are numerous and have been recorded many times, it can be hard to catch these whirling dervishes in the act.

But in this observation from the HighResolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on board NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, not one, but three dust devils have been shot (as in photographed).

On Earth, dust devils form when strong heating of the ground results in a warm layer of air rising through the more dense layers of air above. The air rotates faster and faster, eventually forming a swirling column that picks up dust and other lightweight debris. On Mars, dust devils form in much the same way — sunlight heats the ground and warm air rises to form swirling columns of dust that can reach several kilometers high into the thin atmosphere, much higher than their terrestrial counterparts.

Apple releases iOS 8 beta 2 to developers

Less than three weeks after Apple announced iOS 8 at the 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference and delivered the first beta to developers, the company has released iOS 8 beta 2.

According to iMore, the new update emerged Tuesday and is available via Apple's iOS Dev Center or over-the-air download on your device.

Apple's release notes (as published by BGR) indicate that beta 2 mostly deals with bugs in the OS, with a long list of items ostensibly

"fixed in beta 2."

If history is a guide, developers can look forward to several additional beta releases as iOS 8 makes its way toward a fall release, though Apple hasn't announced an exact date. It will likely arrive in September, in tandem with the expected debut of an iPhone 6. (CNET)

Android and Windows to get 'kill switch'

oogle and Microsoft will add a "kill-switch" feature to their Android and Windows phone operating systems.

The feature is a method of making a handset completely useless if it is stolen, rendering a theft pointless.

Authorities have been urging tech firms to take steps to help curb phone theft and argued that a kill-switch feature can help resolve the problem.

Apple and Samsung, two of the biggest phone makers, offer a similar feature on some of their devices.

The move by Google and Microsoft means that kill switches will now be a part of the three most popular phone operating systems in the world.

Growing problem

Smartphone theft has become a big problem across the world.

In an attempt to tackle the issue, policymakers have launched an initiative called Secure our Smartphones.

As part of it, they have urged technology firms to take steps to make it less attractive for robbers to steal mobile devices.

"An activated kill switch converts an easy-to-sell, high-value multimedia device into a jumble of plastic and glass, drastically reducing its street value," the report by New York Attorney General said.

Authorities claim that Apple's feature - dubbed Activation Lock - which it introduced on all iPhones running the iOS 7 operating system in September last year, has helped reduce theft substantially.

According to a report by the New York State Attorney General, in the first five months of 2014 the theft of Apple devices fell by 17% in New York City.

Meanwhile iPhone robberies fell 24% in London and 38% in San Francisco in the six months after Apple introduced the feature, compared to the previous six months.

"During the same period, thefts of other popular mobile devices increased," the report says.

Manoj Menon, managing director of consulting firm Frost & Sullivan said the move was a step in the right direction.

"This is a fantastic move and will go a long way in helping authorities come one step closer to realising a vision of zero theft of mobile phone," he told the BBC. But he added that it was "not a foolproof system" as thieves "will find a way to monetise the accessories and parts of a phone".

However, he said the market for parts and accessories was relatively small and the kill switch "does substantially reduce the financial incentive of stealing a device". (Excerpted from BBC)

Amazon to Launch 3-D Smartphone

mazon's mystery unveiling on Wednesday is widely expected to be a smartphone, which if managed well could shake up the market and boost the US online giant as a device maker.

The company has given few hints, inviting a small group of media to the event to be hosted by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos. The announcement contained an image of what appeared to be the edge of a smartphone -- a device long rumored to be in the works by the Seattle, Wash., firm, which is a retailer of a multitude of goods and digital content.

"If it is a smartphone, Amazon would automatically be considered one of the top players before it even ships its first phone," said Gerry Purdy, chief mobile analyst for Compass Intelligence.

Purdy said Amazon's market clout, large customer base and willingness to sell devices at low profit margins gives the company an opportunity to get a foothold in this key segment. "They have a lot of tools," Purdy told AFP. "They can give free access to content, access to music, or they could credit your monthly phone bill if you spend enough with Amazon."

Amazon has worked to keep customers close with its Amazon Prime subscription service, for $99 a year. This gives consumers free delivery for goods, as well as access to Amazon's streaming video service.

Last week, the company added streaming music for no additional charge.

But Amazon still needs to deliver a high-quality handset and offer enough apps to compete with the popular devices from

Apple and makers such as Samsung which use the Google Android platform.

Several reports have said Amazon's new phone would have 3-D technology, making for a richer, multidimensional display that could differentiate it from rivals. In a cryptic message to journalists attending the event, Bezos sent copies of his favorite childhood book, "Mr. Pine's Purple House," which is about one house that stands out from the others.

Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said Amazon is not interested in taking away a lot of Apple and Samsung market share, but in keeping its customers more engaged.

The artist was born in Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo. He later migrated to the US where he used his new environment as an inspiration to broaden his art series. He moved to Georgia from New Jersey in 2010. That is when he began setting up a studio in an effort to rekindle his artistic career. In 2011, he completed his “Brownstone Series” and began work on his “Petrified Birds”, which he completed in 2012, and is now working on his “NewEarth Incubation (Earth Egg paintings)”.

Bascom has a burning need within to express deeply-felt point of views. It continues to be his creative trigger. The consideration of style, technique, and the overall design serves that need. He is, at core, a figurative artist who believes that art without people or subjects with humanlike personification is art that is

He loves to trek the unbeaten path when it comes to technique. He craves mixed elements and would not hesitate to consider elements pasted into compositions. The artist is also happy to utilize mixed painting tools: traditional brushes, painting knives, and sometimes stiff-bristled hand brushes with which he would spatter diluted pig-

ment through hand-cut templates.

The figurative artist is passionate about the overall shape-design of every piece of his art: shape against other shape must be just right; and even after he would have thought a painting finished, it will only truly be so after he would have made continual minor tweaks here and there to the overall design.

'Nature as Terrified Bird in the Face of Man, Phenomenon I'

“The Petrified Bird” series began with Bascom wanting to say that the effects of modernism on nature is worthy of note – even if only passively. He recalled the day the idea came to him for this series. He was sitting with his sketch book on the deck of his Loganville, Georgia, home in the afternoon. He looked into the distant forested hills where the developers had not yet reached in their carvings of new subdivisions out of forest. Soon after, a Brown Thrasher bird landed on the rail before him. He felt absorbed by its dilated eyes and put himself in the place of one bird being terrified by that first bulldozer that broke through the trees and wreaked havoc with the natural habitat.

ures from the folklore of his homeland, Guyana. As a result of Guyana’s cultural diversity, a rich, commonly accepted folklore has been spawned- a folklore that challenges visual interpretation. Images of the Baccoo and Moongazer, including other folklore, are artistically illustrated on paper in this series.

“New-Earth Incubation” is a follow up on his last series, “The Petrified Birds”. In the “New-Earth Incubation” series, the earth is the egg of a Phoenix un-hatched before yet another rebirth. His aim is to show that the earth, forever, dynamic, will continue to survive through every form of natural or unnatural upheaval that visits it.

This series represents a liberating of Bascom’s mind that has been more or less chained to the conventional expectations of others and a drive to paint within the lines of expectation.

His recent series, Imposition, constitutes a break-away from previous styles and he is now delving into minimalism. In doing so, the artist is freeing himself from conventions that he felt afraid to leave behind. This series, therefore, registers an intention in him to go places he has not gone before as an artist.

uyana in 1847 (then British Guiana), when the first Ursuline nuns arrived in the then colony, was making history. The first railway on the South American continent was nearing completion in the colony. Only 13 years prior to 1847 had slavery been abolished. Stabroek Market was opened in 1842.

It was to this environment of ongoing development that, in 1847, six Ursuline Religious and two postulants (women who want to join the convent) came to British Guiana, even though their families were, very naturally, alarmed when they heard of this dangerous undertaking to a far-off tropical country, and used every argument to dissuade them. They left the Ursuline Convent in Athlone, Ireland.

The six professed foundresses were Mothers Mary Bernard Perry, Mary de Sales Molony, Mary Magdalen Doyle, Mary Regis O’Brien, superior, Mary Stanislaus Hearne and Mary Alphonsus O’Beirne.

The two postulants later would be known as Sisters Mary St. Rose Tierney and Veronica Gavin. Mary Rose

died only five years later in the colony, at the age of 25 and Veronica followed her six years later. These women often used the railway to Rosignol, crossing the Berbice River to New Amsterdam, where the second convent was established in 1897.

On 31 August 1867, the secondary school for girls (St. Rose’s) was opened with four students. Then in 1851, St. Ann’s Orphanage was established. In 1869, a large three-storey school was built with a dormitory for boarders.

Later, in 1925, another three-storey structure was built as there were now over 500 young ladies enrolled in St. Rose’s. This structure abutted St. Rose’s School and contained a fine auditorium with graded floor and stage designed

by Mother St. Catherine. It was the largest of its kind in Georgetown for many years. Funds were available through loans from Rome, England the generosity of the citizens of British Guiana.

In 1933, all children, regardless of religious persuasion, race or language, were accepted at St. Rose’s. Then

in 1935, the first steps to the establishment of a gymnasium began when hooks and ropes suspended from the ceiling, vaulting boxes and horizontal ladders were obtained.

Bicycle stands were provided in 1941 to accommodate the increased number of bicycles being ridden to school. In that same year, students and teachers were no longer required to wear

stockings.

In 1953, the boarding school was closed and work began on a new structure to accommodate the numbers of students requiring admission. The following year, the Marian Wing was completed and officially opened on May 4.

built. Two years later, three additional classrooms were built above the labs.

Then in 1975, young men were accepted as students at St. Rose’s. The next year, St. Rose’s and all other schools became state controlled.

The Serviam Badge is a symbol of all Ursuline schools worldwide. Although St. Rose's is now a government school, and is therefore no longer an Ursuline school, the Ursuline badge was never changed.

Pope Pius XI has said that the badge of the Ursuline schools, with the motto "SERVIAM" is a true symbol of Christian education.

It bears a field of stars [the constellation Ursa Minor, in which the Pole Star lies] signifying the eternal heavens. The Little Bear “Ursus” recalls St. Ursula, patroness of Christian Education and special patroness of Ursuline Schools.

Just as the light from the Little Bear leads up to the brighter light of the Pole Star, so the Ursuline education helps on to the knowledge of truth, symbolised by the Pole Star.

The Ursuline badge bears a cross – from which comes all grace into the world, to remind us that all blessings of God flow from the redemption.

The colour green represents the virtue of hope; the colour silver is a reminder to always be genuine and sincere in everything that is done.

Finally, the word “Serviam”, meaning “I will serve”, expresses loyalty to Christ, and desire to serve him. (www.strosesalumnitoronto.org)

Sand Creek is an Amerindian village located in a stunning setting in the savannahs, in the shadows of the Kanuku Mountains with a large river winding around the community.

It is located in the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo region, also known as Region Nine. Sand Creek is only four hours away from Lethem.

Only a few miles from the mountainous Guyana rainforest environment, Sand Creek itself is set within a vast expanse of grassy and sandy savannah. moking can be extremely harmful to your health. That’s why almost every country in the world requires tobacco companies to put warnings on cigarette packets. In the United States, for example, you may see a message that says “Surgeon General’s Warning: Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema, and may result in yellow teeth, premature aging and a persistent inability to get a date.”

Such warnings are somewhat ineffective, partly because the people who need the warnings the most are the least likely to read them. Some of them can’t read, while others don’t like to read, especially when they see big words such as “Surgeon” and “General.”

Anti-smoking advocates tried to solve this problem by creating “talking” cigarette packs that play messages from cigarette pack warning embedded sound chips whenever the packs are opened, but when these “talking” packs were tested on 1,000 smokers chosen at random, about one-tenth of them suffered heart attacks and almost died. About 40 percent of them dropped the packs and ran away screaming, while the remaining half of them closed the pack as soon as they heard the words “Surgeon General” and tore an opening at the bottom to remove their cigarettes.

“I don’t want my cigarette packs nagging me,” one man said. “I get that enough from my wife.”

In many other countries, including India, the problem of people not reading warnings has been solved by putting scary pictures on cigarette packs. In North Korea, for example, every cigarette

pack comes with a picture of Kim Jong-un. Beside the picture of the supreme leader is a highly effective message: “I kill you if you smoke.”

Not all countries can do that, of course. Canada tried it, but most smokers just laughed when they saw a picture of Stephen Harper.

Another image from the Canadian province of Quebec has proven to be far more effective. It shows a woman whose gums have worn away, exposing the roots of her decaying teeth.

Beside the image is a warning that says “La cigarette cause une forte dépendence et nuit à la santé.” I don’t speak French, but I assume that it means, “Smoking cigarettes can make you look like you get dental care in Britain.”

Canada was the first country to require graphic health warnings on cigarette packs in 2001 and more than 40 countries have done the same. Many of them require half the space on a cigarette pack to be filled with health warnings.

One country, Australia, has gone even further, banning logos, colors, and promotional texts from cigarette packs, and filling most of the space with graphic warnings. A variety of warnings appear on the packs, such as “Smoking clogs your arteries,” “Smoking doubles your risk of stroke,” and

“Smoking causes more pain than losing to India in cricket.”

If it were up to me, the warnings on cigarette packs would be much longer: “Smoking causes lung cancer, stomach cancer, bladder cancer, and various other cancers that will make you wish you had put something less harmful in your mouth — like a scorpion, for example. Smoking puts you at greater risk for heart disease, emphysema, diabetes, and various other diseases that, along with cancer, will make you look scarier than the man pictured on the front of this pack, supreme leader of North Korea.

Smoking can harm nearly every organ of your body – yes, even that organ! – so please put this pack down immediately and try your best to quit smoking. You will not only improve your health, you will also improve your wealth. Cigarettes can be extremely costly – not just the price you pay when you buy them or the price you pay for healthcare, but also the price you pay when you accidentally set your home on fire. Yes, smokers cause hundreds of fires every year: some lose their entire homes, some lose prized possessions, and some lose their eyebrows. Losing your life, your home, your brows – isn’t it better to just lose the habit?”

I went to the store the other day. I was only in there for about five minutes, and when I came out there was a motorcycle cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, ‘Come on buddy, how about giving a guy a break?’

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a stupid idiot.

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having bald tires!

Then I really got angry at him. He finished the second ticket and put it on the car with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket!

This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My car was parked around the corner.

Taking care of mom

Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their elderly Mother.

The first said, “I built a big house for our Mother.” The second said, “I sent her a Mercedes with a driver.” The third smiled and said, “I’ve got you both beat.

You remember how Mom enjoyed reading the Bible? And you know she can’t see very well any more. I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Bible.

It took Elders in the church 12 years to teach him. He’s one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it.”

Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks: “Milton,” she wrote one son, “the house you built is so huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.”

“Gerald,” she wrote to another, “I am too old to travel any more. My eyesight isn’t what it used to be. I stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!”

“Dearest Donald,” she wrote to her third son, “you have the good sense to know what your Mother likes. The chicken was delicious!”

Two priests decided to go on a Hawaiian vacation and they were determined to make this

one a real vacation by not wearing anything that would identify them as clergy.

As soon as the plane landed they headed for a store and bought some really outrageous shorts, shirts, sandals, sunglasses, etc.

The next morning they went to the beach dressed in their “tourist” garb.

They were sitting on beach chairs, enjoying a drink, the sunshine and the scenery when a “drop dead gorgeous” blonde in a topless bikini came walking straight towards them. They couldn’t help but stare.

As the blonde passed them she smiled and said “Good Morning, Father – Good Morning, Father,” nodding and addressing each of them individually, then she passed on by. They were both stunned.

How in the world did she know they were priests?

So the next day, they went back to the store and bought even more outrageous outfits. These were so loud you could hear them before you even saw them! Once again, in their new attire, they settled down in their chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

After a little while, the same gorgeous blonde, wearing a different coloured topless bikini, taking her sweet time, came walking toward them. Again she nodded at each of them, said “Good morning, Father – Good morning, Father,” and started to walk away.

One of the priests couldn’t stand it any longer and said, “Just a minute, young lady.” “Yes, Father?” “We are priests and proud of it, but I have to know, how in the world do you know we are priests, dressed as we are?”

She replied, “Father, it’s me, Sister Kathleen.”

Q: What’s the longest sentence known to man?

A: I Do. I got in a fight with my wife last night… and it was totally my fault. She asked me what was on the TV and I said… dust.

Didn’t go so well after that.

A popular airline recently introduced a special half rate fare for wives who accompanied their husbands on business trips. Expecting great feedback, the company sent out letters to all the wives of businessmen who had used the special rates, asking how they enjoyed their trip. Letters are still pouring in asking, "What trip?"

A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup to come out of the bottle.

During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her fouryear-old daughter to answer the phone. "It's the minister, Mommy," the child said to her mother. Then she added, "Mommy can't come to the phone right now.
