eader of the Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo’s Office on Saturday said that the rule of law in Guyana was under threat and it has urged the international community to pay close attention to recent developments.

In a strongly-worded statement, Jagdeo’s Office singled out recent declarations made and actions taken by the Head of the State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU), Dr Clive Thomas, who it said is openly hostile to the PPP; and “politically directed” interference in the operations of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), both of which are aimed at witch-hunting members of the parliamentary opposition and the leaders of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C).

It said it noted public commitments from the diplomatic community to lending technical and financial assistance to SARU, but argued that the unit’s role as designed since the change of government is to “target, pronounce and make wild unsubstantiated accusations” against the parliamentary opposition and leaders of the PPP/C, while proceeding to try these very individuals publicly.

Meanwhile, turning the attention to Dr Thomas, the opposition leader’s office said that the SARU head seems to have a personal vendetta against the PPP. “Public statements by the Head of the SARU, Dr Clive Thomas, are illustrative. He appears to be consumed with a personal vendetta against the PPP. In fact, his hostility is not exclusively his; the entire Unit is composed of leading APNU/AFC political operatives, some of whom were APNU and AFC Members of the 10th Parliament,” his office said.

The statement reminded that SARU is financed through the budget of the Ministry of the Presidency and alleged that the Unit has been created with the objective of leading the “witch hunt” of the present parliamentary opposition and leaders of the PPP.

Focusing attention on SOCU, Jagdeo’s Office reminded that the Unit was created with the sole purpose of investigating money laundering and the financing of terrorism under the AntiMoney Laundering and Countering the Financing for Terrorism (AMLCFT) Act, but is now the operational arm that is being used to target opposition members.

“This concern of the parliamentary opposition is further bolstered by recent public statements by

Cabinet Ministers which are particularly ominous,” the statement highlighted.

It reminded that during the 2016 Budget Debates, in February, the Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan promised to make the protocols that guide SOCU’s operations public in a matter of weeks, a promise he is still to fulfil.

It also reminded that one government spokesman Minister Raphael Trotman at a press conference a month ago declared that the protocols were not complete, while Minister of State Joseph Harmon last week stated that SOCU operates within the laws of Guyana, thereby side-stepping the issue of the promised protocols.

It was SOCU, the statement said, with army personnel which lead a botched high-speed chase on the car transporting the wife of PPP/C Parliamentarian Charles Ramson Jr, resulting in three persons being killed and the subsequent declaration by the

government that there will be no investigation into the incident, while no agency or person has so far accepted responsibility.

Jagdeo’s Office said that the fact that $40 million has been allocated in the 2016 Budget of the Ministry of the Presidency for a “top up” of the SOCU staff, is highly suspect and facilitates an environment for overt political interference. “ E x a c e r b a t i n g our concerns is the recent public statement

here has been much handwringing recently about the state of reading in our country. Things have got so bad, according to some, that we may be witnessing its actual demise. And we are not just referring to the reading of books.

Few today would conceive that in the middle of the last century we had more than a half-a-dozen newspapers – including one evening edition.

One may hear (since we do not read) that we are not alone in this predicament: the developed countries have conducted reams of research to demonstrate the declining place reading occupies in the lives of citizens. The usual suspects have been identified – TV, video games, I-Pods, smart phones and all the other gadgets that compete, and have evidently displaced books, for our spare time. It would seem that we are following an inevitably trend.

But what is that trend, and is it necessarily bad for us?

At its most fundamental level, reading was simply a revolution in communications that occurred several thousand years ago, when mankind invented writing. Before that, we humans were communicating via speech for tens of thousands of years.

Writing and reading were not immediately enthusiastically embraced. We note Plato’s record (in writing!) of Socrates’ complaint that writing would weaken memories and the power of reasoning and questioning. And in acknowledgement of such critiques, the elements of the oral tradition -- memorisation, rhetoric, recital - were preserved over the millennia.

The invention of the printing press some 500 years ago further revolutionised communication by making books much more easily available to everyone in society. This created its own storm of protests: would the great unwashed masses have the discipline to imbibe the processes of thinking to make use of the knowledge contained in the books? We invented schools and libraries – not to mention popularisers called “magazines” and “newspapers” - to accomplish that task.

Reading became part and parcel of our tradition: books signified “civilization”.

But the development in sophistication and efficiency of books to transmit information created its own inexorable impetus. Before long, we were plunged through the invention of the telegraph and the telephone in the 19th century into the present revolution in communications represented by radio, movies, TV, computers and the internet, etc. And we return to the question of the fate of reading in an era of instantaneous electronic communications.

Our intent in outlining the changes in communication methodologies is to emphasise the inevitable nostalgia engendered when we move from one dominant form into another.

The point we want to make is that we cannot remain stuck in the past: when it comes to human affairs, change is inevitable. In grappling with the technique of communication we cannot lose sight of the intent of communication. Contrary to the popular aphorism, we cannot afford for the medium to become the message.

Human advances and success have been based on our ability to communicate knowledge gained by one generation to succeeding generations in ever-increasingly faster ways. This is salutary in view of the exponential growth in our knowledge base.

Rather than decrying the reduced prevalence of reading and insist like Socrates about retaining the oral tradition, we have to marry the old tradition of books and reading to the new vistas open to us.

It is perhaps ironic that the newer modes of communication may revive the foundations of the older oral tradition. If the reading of books decreases, to cope successfully with the explosion of information in the modern world, we may have to stress the importance of memorisation.

Our educational system will have to become au fait with the potential of the new technologies and combine them with the benefits of reading. The secret is not to insist on rote memorisation of arcane facts but on the ability to reason with and manipulate those facts that are now available literally at our fingertips.

Taxation and fear: A recipe for economic decline Dear Editor, It was Winston Churchill who said: “I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.” Recently, Finance Minister Winston Jordan reported that Central Government’s revenues totalled $53.4 billion at the end of April 2016.

According to him, this represents an increase of $3 billion compared to revenue collections during the same period last year. The minister attributes this increase in revenue collection on “tightening up at ports, new focus on the regions and a clampdown on illegal activities.”

The minister reports that tax revenues increased by $2.1 billion when compared to the same period in 2015. According to the minister, VAT revenues, however, continued to decline.

For the period under review, that is, January to April 2016, these revenues showed a decline of 6.3% compared to the levels achieved during the same period in 2015.

Apart from increased revenue in the collection of rent and royalties in the gold mining sector, there is no other report from the minister regarding the productive sector.

It is painfully obvious that this government places an over-reliance on taxation. In its first full budget, the 2016 Budget, it increased 140-odd public

taxes, in certain instances as high as 1200%. They have removed VAT exemptions from all capital equipment in the major productive sectors which hitherto enjoyed VAT exemptions, namely, agriculture, mining, and forestry. They have imposed duties on imported raw materials for the manufacturing sector that were free from duties under the PPP/C Government.

The President and several of his ministers have publicly expressed the view that the regime of tax concessions put in place by the PPP/Civic Administration to attract investments is too generous and will be reviewed with a view to downsizing them.

In fact, Go-Invest and the Guyana Revenue Authority have been instructed to put these concessions “on hold.”

In Regions Five and Six, employees of the GRA are doing house-to-house inspection and if it is found that there are more than two “banks” of vegetables under cultivation in any yard, the head of the household is documented as engaging in a “commercial activity”, presumably for the purpose of taxation.

This same mentality has polluted their representatives at the level of the Georgetown City Council, hence the parking meter fiasco and the public announcement that there will soon be an increase in rates and taxes.

Against the backdrop of this emphatic pursuit to

tax the populace, one quickly realises that this government’s obsession with the GRA is not an aberration but the interference is deliberate and institutional.

Lest I convey the wrong impression, I wish to make it clear that I appreciate the importance of taxation in the economic equation of a nation. However, the cold hard truth is that real economic growth comes not from taxation but from production, productivity and job creation.

The economy of every great nation was built not on taxation but by production, commerce, trade and industrialisation. The taxation policy and system must be such that it encourages, facilitates and engenders the growth and expansion of these sectors. As these sectors grow and expand they will yield increased taxes but in the process they create jobs and generates all the benefits which come with job creation.

In order to fully encourage these sectors to achieve their optimum potential, there are economies in the world which offer tax free regimes to the extent that even personal income tax is not payable. This government’s policy is situated at the other end of the spectrum.

So while the treasury boasts of increased collection of taxes, there is a decline in production, trade, commerce, manufacturing and service-oriented industries - all of which are inte-

gral to real economic growth and job creation.

This economic paralysis is exacerbated by frightening statements emanating from the head of SARU, Dr Clive Thomas, weekly about who will be charged and who will be jailed and the actions of SOCU, which conduct unconstitutional and arbitrary searches of business premises and seize therefrom large amounts of cash, jewellery, and confidential financial information.

These are two rogue organisations operating from within the Ministry of Presidency, without any legal bases whatsoever, carrying out the political directions of those in government.

The once powerful Private Sector Commission which was so ready to publicly pounce on the PPP/C administration at the drop of a hat, has now become mute in fear. A businessman wants to legally challenge the new imposition of a parking fee of $20,000 by the City Council of Georgetown in respect of containers, which is charged even where the container is there only for a few hours to discharge cargo. However, he is afraid to use his name in the legal proceedings because of reprisals.

Fear has returned to Guyana. This time it’s not generated by the bandits but by the Government.

Essential principles in Questionable escalation collective bargaining at local IDB office Dear Editor, The restoration of collective bargaining in the public service between the public authority and the Guyana Public Service Union is a welcome development.

This is observing the treaty obligations flowing from the International Labour Convention No 151 – Labour Relations (Public Service) 1978, ratified by Guyana in June 1982. This Convention provides for the protection of public employees’ right to organise and collective bargaining, procedures for dispute settlement through negotiations, conciliation, mediation, and arbitration.

Convention 151 confers similar rights flowing from Convention No 98 – Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining, applicable to the private sector.

The public authorities need to be mindful of International Treaty obligations of International Labour Conventions, ratified by Guyana, and national laws on the conduct of labour and industrial relations, including Trade Union Recognition Act Chapter 98:07, No 33 of 1997 which imposes an obligation on the union and employer to bargain in good faith and enter into negotiations with each other for the purpose of collective bargaining.

The principles and practice of good faith bargaining in collective bargaining requires the practice of industrial diplomacy of mutual respect, and trust in civil encounters, including: * Adequate preparations on both sides for serious negotiations. * A determination by both sides to forge mutual agreements. * That the negotiating parties have a full mandate to agree on all issues on the negotiating table without frequent adjournments to consult higher authority. The negotiating teams

should come to the table knowing fully the absolute limit of concessions and acceptance. * The public service negotiating team should be given the absolute percentage or dollar amount of the wage bill for increases in salaries/ wages and allowances which it can distribute and concede through the cut and thrust of negotiations. * Negotiations are private, confidential processes, and should be free from premature media publicity and before the conclusion of full agreement or otherwise. * Communication to the media during the course of negotiations, if necessary, should be by joint releases. * All cost items of salaries/wages and allowances, etc should be on the negotiation table to determine the total increase in employment costs to the national treasury. * It is prudent to treat all negotiating items – salaries, wages, allowances, etc as a total package with the understanding that agreement on a single item is subject to agreement on all cost items, to avoid a more costly piecemeal approach.

Lack of good faith bargaining constitutes the power approach in labour negotiations including: building up expectations of staff with unrealistic proposals at general meetings, agitation in the media before dialogue/ discussions, ‘negotiating’ in the media, misinformation to the media, unnecessary threats of industrial actions, external influences and pressures, public demonstrations, public agitation, illegal actions, political and external lobbying during the course of negotiations, and personal attacks on the integrity of the members of ei-

ther negotiating team or on the union or public authority.

The parties should be aware that four possible approaches can be adopted by either or both parties in labour negotiations and in the management of labour conflicts: Avoidance approach: failure or refusal to deal with the issue; settlement by chance.

Power approach: coercion to force the other side to concede; settlement by force, industrial actions - strikes, lockouts, etc.

Rights approach: independent standards of right or fairness; settlement by a labour tribunal, arbitration or by a court of law.

Consensus approach: the best and preferred approach which endeavours to reconcile, compromise or accommodate. The superiority of the consensus approach reflects settlement by the parties through direct negotiations or conciliation/ mediation, or another mutually agreed means for final resolution One would expect the parties in the public sector would set a good example to the national community by eschewing of the power approach and employing the consensus and rights approaches in good faith encounters. There is also the assistance of a third party through Conciliation/ Mediation, and finally, in the event of failure of the earlier processes, arbitration or a national commission review with recommendations to the National Assembly which provides the funds.

Dear Editor, It is quite evident that the level of apparent corruption, misuse and mismanagement of resources, lack of transparency and abuse of authority has escalated at the IDB local office. These alarming developments have escalated over the last 12 months.

It seems that the IDB board, the IDB Regional head and all in authority at the Caribbean and Washington offices are either turning a blind eye or condoning these issues and the declining state of affairs at the IDB local office. Donors and contributing financers of the IDB should take note of this development.

This may be symptomatic of what may very well be happening at the higher IDB levels and may indeed be an early indication of a more chronic scheme of misuse and corruption within IDB. Added to that is also the discrimination and lack of respect for Guyana’s Indigenous People by withholding resources and benefits to these people through a funded project. These issues have been highlighted many times in the media and the fact that the IDB choose to go silent on each of the issues have basically confirmed an apparent high incident and issues of corruption, mismanagement, lack of transparency and abuse of authority under head of IDB. More recently another section of the media published another letter accusing the IDB of corruption on an IDB/ EU/GPL project. Below are just a few of the long list of questionable and suspicious transaction and issues that have been highlighted as glaring issues of corruption, lack of transparency, and mismanagement and misuse of resources.

A large number of staff has been employed at the Office of Climate Change and Project Management Office that are being paid by the IDB using the Norwegian GRIF funds and for which no trans-

parent procurement process has been employed or carried out. Numerous calls have been made to the IDB to publish the names and position of staff employed post-May 2015 at OCC and PMO that are being paid using the GRIF funds managed by IDB. Only recently former President Jagdeo expressed the same concerns that staff are being employed and paid from the Norway funds and there seems to be no transparency in the process.

To date the IDB has remained silent on the issue.

IDB has single-sourced a number of forensic auditors for the Government forensic audit. It is estimated that over G$50 million of contracts was funded by the IDB and no transparent procurement process was carried out to hire these auditors; they were simply handpicked.

Civil society personnel have expressed dissatisfaction at the slow pace of implementation of a project titled Forest Carbon Facility Programme.

These apparent delays are engineered by IDB to frustrate and deny Amerindian people benefits and financial resources committed to them under this project.

There are reports that IDB is apparently delaying the implementation of a project referred to as Opt In Mechanism which is geared towards developing a ben-

efit-sharing mechanism for Amerindian communities.

Again Amerindians are very disappointed and concerned of the IDB slothfulness in bringing benefits to their communities.

Recently another section of the media reported that accusations have been made of the IDB condoning seeming lack of transparency on an IDB/EU/GPL funded project.

These levels of corruption that currently exist at the IDB local office is a worrying development for a financial institution like IDB. And to top it off the IDB head office or those in authority seem to be condoning these acts of corruption and mismanagement, lack of transparency, etc.

These are only a few that have come to the public attention.

It is highly likely that almost all the projects being executed under the IDB management has some element of corruption.

I am again calling for a full investigation into the IDB operations in Guyana. Guyanese are getting tired and frustrated of these impositions of IDB and calls are being repeated for a total reorganisation of the IDB as Guyana needs their support but not with the current management at the local office.

Study shows active children focus better in school

– 5 ideas to improve your child’s concentration

o accomplish any task you need to be able to concentrate your attention for a time. It is a requirement for learning. Children not only need to be able to focus on tasks but to stay in the one place long enough so they can listen to and follow instructions.

Most children, from time to time, will experience some concentration or focusing difficulties. This is particularly true when they are over tired, over stimulated or over loaded.

However some children due to either their physiology or psychology have greater difficulty focusing on tasks and on people than others. Either they find settling into or starting a task a problem or they lose focus easily and leave tasks half done.

There are many things you can do at home to impact on children’s concentration levels.

Like any skill concentration can be enhanced and made automatic. The trick to effective concentration is to know what to concentrate on and what to filter out.

Here are five ideas you can use to help children to concentrate better: 1.

Attend to their physiological needs: Most children and teenagers

concentrate best after nine hours sleep so make sure they get sufficient sleep. Reduce sugar intake and increase protein levels with lean meat, almonds and eggs. This stimulates their dopamine levels which make concentration easier, particularly for lethargic kids. Frequent breaks for exercise have a similar effect.

2. Remove distractions at home: List the distractions at home that may prevent your child from concentrating. These include; noise, people, lighting, fighting, fatigue and hunger. List ways to eliminate or reduce and work at them systematically.

3. Create the mood for concentration: Calming background music, placing a fish tank (with fish) in a place of work and removal of fluorescent lights are some simple ways to make the environment more amenable for concentration.

These strategies have been used successfully in overcoming concentration problems in many ‘boy–friendly’ schools.

4. Introduce sequencing and organisation activities: The link between sequencing and concentration is a strong one. Following recipes, setting the table and putting things in alphabetical order are great

activities for kids whose have concentration difficulties.

Board and card games (such as Concentration!!) promote children’s ability to focus on tasks as well.

5. Figure out what activities your child focuses on best: Some children concentrate better when they are involved in handson activities, while others focus better when there are plenty of visual cues to help them. That’s why teachers use hand signals such as hands on heads, and fingers on lips to indicate quiet.

Look for activities that your child gets lost in; those activities that they can spend literally spend hours in. These activities enhance children’s concentration levels.

Like any skill, concentration can be improved and made automatic. Anyone who has learned to drive a car will have had the experience of thinking, “How will I concentrate on all these things?” Extensive practice allows for the pathways of concentration.

It helps before you begin to assist children to concentrate better if you pay close attention to their pattern of concentration and see if there are links between diet, their energy pattern, sleep and your own behaviours.

Perhaps you just haven’t found your most effective studying style yet. If you’ve been trying to work on your own, for example, you might find it easier to work with a friend or two, so that you have someone else there to motivate you.

Stop procrastinating

One of the reasons why you’re underperforming could be that you’re spending too much time procrastinating – that is, putting off work by distracting yourself with other things, such as social media. The problem is that in doing so, you’re delaying the inevitable, as well as making your task worse by eating into the time when you could be productive. Allow plenty of time for revision

If you’re achieving lower scores than you’d hoped for on timed tests or mock exams, it could be because you’re not allowing enough time for revising for them.

They show you which areas you need to spend more time on, and achieving good grades in them will give you a confidence boost. Treat them as seriously as you would a real exam, allowing yourself plenty of time to revising for them. Better still, revise everything you learn

As a last resort, if the ideas in this article haven’t worked for you, you might consider hiring a private tutor to help you improve your grades for a particularly tricky subject. Some extra tuition may be just what you need to help bring your grade up, as you’ll benefit from one-to-one tuition in an environment in which you might feel more able to ask questions without the fear of speaking up in front of your peers. If you think this would help you, speak to your parents and suggest that they place an advert in the local paper if they’re willing to cover the cost of private tuition for you.

Go on a summer school

A final option – best taken alongside the other advice in this article, rather than instead of it – is to book yourself onto an academic summer school. Taking part in a summer school would allow you to learn away from the pressures of the classroom and exams, reinvigorating your love of learning and inspiring you to take a more determined approach to your studies. resident David Granger is holding to a promise made while he was Opposition Leader to probe the extrajudicial killings that occurred in Guyana during the period 2000 to 2008.

According to the Head of State, such an inquiry is still on the table. In fact, he noted that the information required to conduct the probes are being compiled.

“The information is still being compiled; as you know, we’ve taken actions to ensure that inquests are conducted,” he stated during the weekly programme The Public Interest, which was aired on Friday.

Granger noted that he cannot fathom what prevented the previous administration from taking such steps, especially since one of its Cabinet members, former Agriculture Minister Satyadeo Sawh, was killed in the same manner.

“Even in the case of the Minister of Agriculture who was assassinated, a sitting member of Cabinet, and there is no investigations, no inquest, no magistrate’s inquest wasn’t conducted.

Members of the (Sawh) family have spoken to me face to face and asked for investigations to be done and we are proceeding in that way,” the President asserted.

Sawh, his sister Phulmattie Persaud, his brother Rajpat Sawh and security guard Curtis Robinson, were gunned down on April 22, 2008 at the former Minister’s La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara, home.

As Opposition Leader and even after his appointment into the presidency, Granger has called for

a Commission of Inquiry into extrajudicial killings in Guyana.

In August 2015, while addressing a forum on the State of African-Guyanese at the Critchlow Labour College, President Granger said: “I will ensure that all those who were killed have their deaths investigated.”

He also reiterated his intention to see a motion passed in the National Assembly for the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry which will probe a large number of killings during the period 2000 to 2008.

Granger had first drafted the motion in 2012 while he was Opposition Leader.

It seeks to investigate, among others, the killing of Sawh and the massacres at Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek.

In efforts to take a step closer to those killings, government wanted to ensure that there is an efficient and effective Coroner Department in place to investigate the crimes of that period. In this vain, government used its one seat majority in the National Assembly back in January this year to pass the Coroner’s Amendment Bill, which will see, among other things, a minimum of four full-time coroners in Demerara, three in Berbice and two in Essequibo.

crime spree, hundreds of Guyanese lives were lost, including many police officers. Some 31 ranks including Superintendent Leon Fraser were killed in the line of duty during the period proposed for probing.

The notorious ‘Phantom Squad’ is said to be led by self-confessed druglord Shaheed Roger Khan, who is currently serving a 15year sentence in the United States after he pleaded guilty to arms trafficking, drug trafficking, conspiracy and witness tampering.

Khan had made claims of working to curb an outof-control crime situation during that period by using extrajudicial methods of execution.

In October last year, US Ambassador Perry Holloway had told local reporters, when asked, that there is a possibility for the Guyana Government to access Khan’s testimony in the US Courts. He noted that

there is a process to follow but one which has high requirements. Nevertheless, the US diplomat said that his country would cooperate if the necessary procedures are followed.

“If the rules and regulations of the agreement are done with Guyana, or we have signed up under the UN or OAS to allow for such a thing, we would be sure to be disposed to cooperating within the framework of the rule of law,” the US Ambassador had stated.

In response, President Granger disclosed back in March that there are plans to probe extrajudicial killings and noted that if there are connections to the convicted drug baron, then the Guyana Government will seek to engage him.

“Wherever those leads take us, we will follow… We need to have a lawful and orderly society and whoever is accused of committing murders will have to be punished… I’m not accusing anybody but where ever those leads take us, we will follow to make sure justice is done and Guyanese can live in a country where they can be assured of being safe,” the Head of State had remarked.

On the other hand, even as the Coalition is adamant about probing the killings during the 2000 to 2008 era, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Opposition had raised concerns, noting that government should launch

man who fled Police custody from the La Grange Police Station, West Bank Demerara, holding area on Wednesday last is still at large.

Anthony Jhagroo believed to be in his early 20s was being held in connection with the murder of mechanic Yogeshwar Shivcharran, who was beaten at Bell West, WBD two weeks ago and had succumbed to his injuries six days later.

On Saturday Guyana Times was told that Police are still hunting for the suspect.

Reports had indicated that Jhagroo escaped during the wee hours of Wednesday morning when there was a power outage in Regions Three and Four.

The suspect supposedly made his way through a gap in the wall of the holding area of the Police Station,

despite reports that there were two Police ranks on duty at the time of the escape.

The Bell West mechanic, 31, was beaten by a group of drunken neighbours.

Shivcharran suffered regular seizures and in a mental episode, he removed his clothing and approached his neighbours, who were consuming alcohol next door.

These neighbours reportedly pelted him with beer bottles before beating him to his head and body.

On Monday last Police had questioned and released three women in connection with the incident while Jhagroo was held at the Station on Tuesday before he fled the next day.

Investigations of the murder and escape are continuing, while nothing is being said of the hole in the wall in the Police Station.

“Smiley” jailed for attempting to kill “Bully”

ansel Lewis, also known as “Smiley”, was sentenced to 13 years in prison when he appeared in court in Berbice during the Berbice Assizes.

The sentence was handed down by Justice Brassington Reynolds.

Lewis, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was found guilty by a 12-man jury for the attempted murder of Chris Burrowes, called “Bully” on New Year’s Day 2013.

The State’s case, which was presented by Prosecutor Stacey Goodings, stated that Lewis slashed Burrowes to the throat while outside a bar on New Year’s morning at about 06:45h.

During the trial, Burrowes told the court that he knew the accused for a number of years. He said on the day in questioned, he was in the vicinity of the Rainbow Bar where he drank Banko wine, and was standing on the road when

the accused came and stood next to him, smoking something that smelt unpleasant. He said he asked the accused to move. However, moments later, he was injured by the accused.

Throughout the trial, Lewis maintained that he was wrongfully accused. At

the time of the incident, he said himself and the Virtual Complainant were at the bar consuming alcohol when an argument ensued. According to Lewis, they both went their separate ways, and he could not recall any physical altercation between them.

Lewis was represented by Attorney Ramesh Rajkumar who argued that it was a case of mistaken identity.

On Friday last, Probation and Welfare Officer Judith Vankennie told the court that Lewis feels bad about the incident and maintains his innocence. Both the defendant and the accused were friends at the time if the incident.

Vankennie continued by telling the court that Lewis experienced a happy childhood while residing in Guyana, but migrated to the United States in 1990.

He came into conflict with the law and was deported in 2002.

A report from the National Psychiatric Hospital revealed that he had been admitted there in 2008 for drug abuse and investigations conducted in the community of John Lewis Street in Angoy’s Avenue, where Lewis resides, revealed that he is known for his alcoholic tendencies, and has caused disturbances in the community.

Having been found guilty by a mixed jury, Attorney Rajkumar pleaded for leniency for his client from the court, noting that the probation report proved he was remorseful despite his innocence.

Justice Reynolds told the accused that the jury did not believe his story, adding that the court believed he ambushed the Virtual Complainant after he objected to him smoking something that smelt offensive next to him.

As such Lewis was jailed for 13 years.

It added that government’s silence with regard to the public call by Jagdeo for a specialised firm or Interpol to track the assets of all MPs and former Presidents is of particular interest in the context of these developments.

“Therefore, our concerns regarding these trends which are undermining the rule of law in Guyana are not emotive, but, based on the very actions and statements made by senior government Ministers and the SARU, coupled with actions of the SOCU. These

reveal a stealthy intrusion of the executive into the independence of the prosecutorial and judicial arms of the state by the APNU/AFC Coalition government,” the statement said.

Jagdeo’s Office is also alerting the Guyanese public, civil society bodies, the diplomatic and donor communities of what it terms “worrying developments which are an indicator of creeping authoritarianism undermining democracy, human rights and the rule of law.

ifty years after Independence, coming off the big Jubilee Bash, the Public Service Union is locked in talks for what they hope will be “salary increases” from the PNC-led APNU/AFC coalition government.

Some of their older heads must be sucking their teeth at the irony of history. Fifty three years ago, it was THEIR strike that gave the British and Americans the excuse to intervene to throw out the PPP and install the PNC with Burnham at its helm into power.

The honeymoon didn’t last too long and by the 1970, after Burnham declared what was now a “coop republic in transition to socialism”, large swathes of the upper echelons of the public service became “public enemy”!

They were, of course, a bit leery about being addressed as “comrades” by their juniors. Burnham gleefully changed their name from “Civil Service” to “Public Service” and shipped them off to the Hope Coconut Estate where he introduced them to the salutary moral improvement induced by manual labour. Burnham literally “overseered” them from a “high horse”. His jodhpurs were his idiosyncratic touch!!

Anyhow, by the time the PPP took over in 1992, the Public Service was a shadow of its former self - not only through losing its status but also shrunken in size by Desmond Hoyte on the directive of the IMF. The PPP tried to score some brownie points with the Public Servants by halting the “retrenchments” but to no avail. When it came to political loyalty, ethnicity continued to rule the roost.

And so even though the PPP said “please, pretty please - the cupboards are bare and the IMF’s calling the shots”, when it came time for wage negotiations, the Public Servants evidently’d recovered their “spunks”.

They came out into the streets in 1999, browbeated the PPP/C to arbitration and received an astounding 31.6%!!

Well, maybe the Public Servants’ve learnt they can’t risk being taken for granted by another PNC-led coalition?

After saying before the elections Public Servants will get a “substantial” salary increase, and getting zilch last year, they’ve started off by demanding a 40% increase this year. But PNC leader and now APNU/AFC President David Granger has now made that demand seem quite quixotic. He insisted “lazy public servants” will get lazy increases. So will the GPSU now come out into the streets and show some of their old “spunks”?

While your Eyewitness has some doubts about leopards losing their spots and all of that, he does have some hope. Living conditions are getting more dread daily.

And the clincher might be the reminder that the government gave its ministers a whopping 50% increase last year!

...of foreign working girls

If it’s summer then it must be time for another sweep of “working girls”. Last year it was the recipient of the US “International Hero” award for fighting TIP - Simona Broomes - who rode into the Wild West town-to-be of Bartica and hauled 15 or so foreign girls - who all insisted they were all “working girls” - to Georgetown. There was supposed to be an investigation to verify if they were in fact “trafficked” but we never heard anything... Just that four of them didn’t have their passports stamped.

No wonder the US official report rapped Guyana for not vigorously prosecuting.

So this year, 11 “foreign strippers” were taken into custody: but this time - all from a club in Georgetown.

Once again, however, all that was noted was some of the girls didn’t have “papers”. So what’re we doing? Going after Trafficking In Persons or Policing morals?

Are we saying women can’t do what they want with their bodies?

...muscling in on drug smugglers

Barry Dataram’s an interesting fella. He never tried to even deny he was a drug smuggler. He was willing to face the music - legally. What he resented was that those who were supposed to stop him, kept trying to muscle in on his action!

Bandits terrorise Police promote 187 ranks La Jalousie family A

A

West Coast Demerara (WCD) family is left traumatised after four unmasked bandits, all armed, barged into their business and terrorised them before taking off with an undisclosed sum of cash and other items.

Guyana Times understands that the robbery took place sometime around 12:10h on Saturday at a grocery shop at Lot 26 La Jalousie Public Road, WCD. The owner, businessman Bhupaul Panday, was in the shop with his wife, son and daughter along with two customers when the bandits pounced on them.

It was reported that the perpetrators tied up the six individuals with duct tape as they ransack the premises in search of valuables.

A relative related to this newspaper that the men stormed the shop, all armed with handguns, and kicked down the door to gain entry behind the counter. The men immediately began ripping out the electronics in the house including the computers, the DVR attached to the surveillance camera and the phone lines.

“They just walked in and kick down the door… and start ripping off all the electronics in the house and beat up the people them,” the relative stated.

They then began to terrorise the family, asking for

money and other valuables, the relative noted. The bandits then duct-taped the four Panday family and the two customers as they searched the house for whatever valuables they could get their hands on. However, they kept on hitting the owners, demanding more money and jewellery.

“They took a bunch of things with them, personal items and so on but they keep hitting the people them, as if what they were taking weren’t enough. They wanted more,” the relative noted.

After some time, the four bandits realised time was running out and so made good their escape.

This newspaper understands that the men were able to take with them phone cards, laptops, cash and jewellery.

Police sources also confirmed that the perpetrators managed to get hold of the businessman’s hand and

shot guns, which they also took with them.

According to the relative, after fleeing from the shop, the bandits jumped into two awaiting cars: “These two cars were seen pulling off from in front of the shop and heading towards Vreed-enHoop side,” the relative disclosed.

The Police were alerted and immediately launched an investigation.

Police ranks in D Division (West Demerara) have since confirmed to Guyana Times that two persons have been arrested and are in custody assisting with investigations.

However, this newspaper could not confirm whether those persons arrested were among the four bandits who barged in and terrorised the Panday family and their two customers.

Meanwhile, the victims had to be taken for medical attention as a result of the beating they suffered.

s part of its 177th Anniversary celebrations, the Guyana Police Force has promoted some 187 Policemen and women to a higher rank.

Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud promoted ranks of the Regular Force, Special Constabulary, Guystac and Rural Constabulary in recognition of their hard work and dedication to the job and the people of Guyana.

The promotions will take effect from July 16.

A total of 46 Corporals were elevated to the rank of Sergeant. This includes 16 female officers.

Some 60 officers were promoted to the rank of Corporal.

There were 36 Constables, of which seven were females, and 24 Lance Corporals, of which 13 were females.

Meanwhile, another 33 Constables, inclusive of five females, were promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

On the other hand, as it relates to Special Constabulary regular ranks, six Corporals were promoted to Sergeant, of which only two were males. In addition, six Lance Corporals and two Constables were elevated to the rank of Corporal.

These include four female Lance Corporals and one female Constable.

Moreover, there were two female ranks among 12 Constables who were promot-

ed to Lance Corporal.

In relation to the Guystac ranks, only two of them, both of whom are women Corporals, were elevated to the rank of Sergeant. Another two females; one Lance Corporal and one Constable, were promoted to Corporal.

Additionally, two Constables have advanced to the rank of Lance Corporals.

With regards to Rural Constabulary, the Police promoted four Corporals to the rank of Sergeant, while 12 Constables received promotion to the rank of Corporal.

These were all male ranks.

Last year, Commissioner Persaud promoted some 333 ranks in total.

An internal board headed by the Police Commissioner is responsible for making promotions of officers from the

rank of Sergeant to Constable.

Those from the rank of Inspector to Assistance Commissioner of Police (ACP) are promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Meanwhile, the appointments of Deputy Commissioner and Police Commissioner are done

by Government.

However, senior ranks of the Police Force were left disappointed after the PSC announced in December that annual promotions, which are usually declared in December or early January, have been delayed until February 23, 2016.

However, those ranks from Inspectors and upwards are yet to know whether they have elevated or not, since those promotions have not been announced. It was reported that the final list of promotions were handed over to President David Granger, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan and Police Commissioner Persaud.

In December 2015, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Clement Rohee had called for Police promotions to be put on hold citing the high number of disciplinary matters pending. Days later, the PSC announced that it was putting a hold on the promotions, explaining that the list of nominees for promotion was submitted late.

CCJ to reduce paper use in judicial process – Sir Byron P resident of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Sir Charles Dennis Byron informed participants of the Hague Convention Conference that the CCJ is in the final stages of developing programmes that would reduce the use of paper in judicial processes throughout the Region.

“That (programmes being developed) would facilitate that process in domestic jurisdictions throughout the Region, so it’s something that we would like to encourage acceptance to,” Sir Byron said on Friday.

The three-day Hague Conference on Private International Law concluded on Friday.

He explained that the CCJ has tried to eliminate or reduce the use of paper in their judicial process by allowing all matters to be filed electronically.

Additionally, all reports and orders made by the Court are issued electronically and the serving of documents is permitted electronically.

“In our situation, part of the reason for it had to do with expedition and cost, so for example, if we were receiving pleadings say from Belize, several copies would have to be made and sent to us by courier then you have

the process of the registration, and it being returned by courier and then you’ll have the cost involved in arranging service… we have seen bills where the service of a document has cost litigants US$30 to US$40,000 and the whole service process has taken a number of weeks including the process of courts,” Sir Byron explained.

He added that by implementing those measures, the CCJ has eliminated the cost of filing and service, reducing it to zero and recued the time to five minutes, “So we think there are many advantages to be gained from pursuing this process.”

Stanley Moore, said Justice Byron illustrated and demonstrated one of the essential pre-requisites of a modern progressive judicial system.-“That is to say we are in the new electronic information age and therefore we need to make use of all the latest electronic devices. We have to keep up with modernity, we cannot be neo-luddites (used to describe those who are anti-technology). Therefore I believe that in the future, the discussion which we are now having will be a matter of history because the new norms will be the use and the availability of all the latest technological devices available to court systems throughout the world,”

Justice Moore reasoned.

These contributions came as a result of presentations made on the use and application of the Hague Service Convention

by Daniel Klimow, Attorney Adviser, Office of Legal Affairs, Overseas Citizens Services, Bureau of Consular Affairs, United States Department of State; Jewel Major, Office of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs Ministry, The Bahamas, Central Authority for the Hague 196 Service Convention; and the Honourable Ryan Johnson, Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister, Antigua and Barbuda, Central Authority for the Hague 1965 Service Convention.

Participants were informed during that presentation that signing on to the 1965 Service Convention provides channels of transmission to be used when a judicial or extrajudicial document is to be transmitted from one State party to the Convention, to another State party for Service in the latter.

Specifically, the Convention allows member parties to effect service of judicial and extra judicial documents in a more efficient, time consuming and cost effective manner.

NOT Garbage money

atiricus was astounded. He’d heard - mostly when listening to the priest in his Church - that “money was dirty”. He’s always had his doubts about that proposition - but now here was living proof.

“Cappo! Imagine this garbageman getting $221 MILLION a year to haul garbage to this landfill!!” Satiricus exclaimed to his friend who hadn’t even taken his first swig of his beer at the Back Street Bar. “Why did my father insist I “bust” my head in school?”

“Sato, me fr’en’,” intoned Cappo, “me always know garbage gat big money!”

“How the arse YOU know that?” demanded Satiricus belligerently.

“Well, remember Potoo?” Cappo replied after a short pause during which he took a loooong pull at his beer.

“Of course I remember Potoo,” replied Satiricus. “The fella from front street who used to catch rats in the cane fields. He went to America when his mother sponsored him. What does he have to do with what we talking about?”

“Budday!! Lis’en, na!” Cappo was smiling. “Potoo bin wuss dan me in school. He cyaan even read an’ write.” He paused to take another gulp of his beer.

“And?” interjected Satiricus impatiently.

“And suh when ‘he reach New Yark, garbageman bin a de only jaab he cou’d get.” Cappo paused for effect. “But in only five year time he wuk suh much money ‘e now gat five house in New Yaark! Garbage gat biiiiiig money, Sato!”

“But that was in New York...they have the big bucks there,” pointed out Satiricus indignantly. “They spend millions of dollars for paintings that look like garbage to me! But this is Guyana!”

“Progress, Sato...Progress!” Cappo smirked. “If abee can spen’ $1 billian fuh salute wan big flag, jus’ like ‘Merica pan dem Independence Day, wha mek abee cyaan spen’ $221 millian pan garage?”

“Maybe you have a point there, Cappo,” conceded Satiricus.

“And at our flag raising, I thought the show was garbage, anyway!” “Leh abee drink to garbage!” said Cappo, as the two old friends clinked their beer bottles.

Region 10 residents to access decentralised passport services … service to begin in 1 month

he crowds of citizens that gather on a daily basis at the Georgetown passport office may be reduced, as residents of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) will soon be able to renew their passports without travelling to the capital city.

These measures were announced by Citizenship Minister Winston Felix during a “Meet the Public Day” event at the McKenzie Sports Club ground in Linden on Saturday.

According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), residents will be able to access the services from sometime in August. This announcement comes on the backdrop of part of a plan to “decentralise passport related services” in the country.

“The Department of Citizenship has over the past few months been endeavouring to decentralise the receipt of passport applications and the delivery of passports within the regions. Linden will be the third town to have this service available, as this service is being made available in Berbice and Essequibo as well,” Felix is quoted as saying.

passports for the first time, applicants will still be required to travel to Georgetown to “complete the process” but stressed that persons who are applying for a renewal “will be able to access the service in Linden”.

“We realise the need to bring Government services in the region and we need to reduce the unnecessary crowds that we have at the passport office at Georgetown,” the Citizenship Minister expressed.

It was also explained that the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) Building in

McKenzie, has been identified as the location from where the passport service will be provided.

“Immigration Officers will visit the location twice weekly and receive applications for renewal from residents. The applications will be processed in Georgetown and the residents will receive their renewed passports upon the officers’ return the following week,” the release noted.

Assistant National Director, Community Development Councils, Sandra Adams, who will be responsible for “coordinating the setup of the service,” pointed out that “seniors in Linden” will benefit from the new measure.

“There are a lot of seniors in Linden who cannot make it to Georgetown and I have received a lot of complaints recently, that by time they get to Georgetown, the numbers are finished and they have to return without getting their passport. So we are happy for this service to begin,” posited Adams. There have been complaints of people at the Georgetown Office having to stand in long lines for hours or switching seats in a slow moving chair system.

E

ssequibo Branch of Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) on Friday celebrated 18 years of service in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) with a grand reception for customers and employees.

The reception, held on the lawns of the bank, was attended by CEO, John Tracy, manager of administration Sean Noel along with Region Two regional executive officer Rupert Hopkinson.

Speaking at the reception the CEO said that the Anna Regina branch has grown over the years, noting however, that business has seen a significant decline since the dawn of 2016.

Addressing customers and staff before the commencement of the reception, Tracy said that the decline of the rice industry - the backbone of Region Two, is

having a negative effect on business.

He explained that the strength of an economy often defines business for a bank, adding that the current state of the rice industry is a “thinning” time for the region.

He however said the bank will stand with its customers during “thick or thin” to cushion the effect of the situation. Tracy said despite the challenges, the bank has recognised that the rice industry plays an important role in the growth of the banking sector.

Meanwhile branch manager Dave Persaud during his address said the Anna Regina branch was opened on July 13, 1998 and for 18 years the branch has remained efficient and reliable in offering its service to the public: “We are always open to finding new, innovated ways to improve our

service and as such we have launched two new products: GBTI Education Saving Plan, and GBTI Kick Start Education Loan Plan.”

In explaining the Education Saving Plan, he said it is specially designed to provide parents with the ability to save and make post-secondary education a reality for their children.

The GBTI Kick Start Educational Loan Plan, he said, caters for potential and existing post-secondary education that gears to assist in tuition fees, books, accommodation and live-in expenses.

The manager also took the opportunity to thank customers for choosing the bank as their choice.

After the formal opening customers used the opportunity to interact and socialise with both management and staff of the financial institution.

Hague Convention Conference participants treated to cultural extravaganza

egal luminaries from the Caribbean region and further afield participated in the Hague Convention Conference on International Family Law, Legal Cooperation and Commerce held in Guyana from July 13 through 16.

The conference which was hosted by Guyana in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) culminated with a cultural reception for participants at the Umana Yana.

All the performances by the artistes depicted Guyanese culture – a di-

verse culture of a country with many ethnicities and religions.

Practising social cohesion

“S

ocial cohesion” is all the rage these days. In Europe, such plans are crafted for homogenous populations dealing with new immigrant minorities. This is hardly the situation in Guyana where the racial/political divide goes back to the arrival of Indian indentured labourers 178 years ago, to our divisive colonial politics, and to the ensuing race politics that started in the 1950s, and exploded into violence in the 1960s, a violence that still threatens because the social, cultural and political causes are yet to be dealt with. Hence, the lack of social cohesion.

In a previous column, I explored the lack of political Ryhaan Shah will on either side of the divide to change anything for the better, and stated that Guyana is saddled with lazy, short-sighted politicians who are deathly afraid of a nation of peoples who will actually be united enough to see past race and vote intelligently on issues. Should this ever happen, they will all be summarily rejected. They need the divide.

A cohesive society is built on several basic elements, these being primarily trust, respect, transparency and accountability, justice, economic progress, and national security. To get there, Guyana simply has to enforce current laws, conventions and recommendations, and practise a healthy measure of fairmindedness in our governance.

This is yet to happen and the David Granger Government in one year has managed to create deeper and wider racial divisions in Guyana than has happened in over 20 years. Everywhere, everybody is vexed: the business community, the labour sector, the young unemployed, fired public servants, Georgetown’s citizens, metal recyclers, street vendors, and the public at large.

If this Government is serious about building social cohesion, it must start with President David Granger himself who must forgo his hauteur and unilateral decision-making for democratic processes that are fair, transparent and consultative of the people.

A vibrant economy is fundamental for job creation, job security and national progress, and since Government is bereft of ideas of how to proceed with economic development – both public and private – there is urgent need to establish an Economic Advisory Committee that will comprise our successful business and manufacturing leaders.

All Guyanese businesses, no matter their political persuasions, must be represented. Government’s overt partisanship of “jobs for the boys” as is evident in its public service is non-cohesive, non-representative, and contrary to national interests.

The recent Golden Jubilee celebration was another such overt racial/partisan exercise where the favoured African-Guyanese population were the main participants. Such government actions make its talk about social cohesion purely hypocritical.

Social cohesion means putting into practice the tenets of the Guyana Constitution and the UN Human Rights Charter where all Guyanese share a common belonging to country, and have an inclusive sense of their Guyanese citizenship which acknowledges and guarantees their identities of religion, culture, ethnicity, gender, etc.

Given that these are guaranteed constitutional and human rights, it is abhorrent that Indian-Guyanese in particular have to continue to explain and justify our presence as if we are indeed outsiders whose ethnicity and cultural values are somehow contrary to national interests.

Mutual respect for all of Guyana’s peoples must start in schools and communities with lessons in well-researched social and political history which highlight the contributions that each group has made to the country’s development.

The media has an important role to play in this regard especially in instances where “unity” and “racial harmony” are presented by certain sections as racial intermarriage and miscegenation, and as the solution to the country’s racial divide.

Granger himself never addresses this single most pressing issue in any of his statements on social cohesion and has been heard to infer publicly that the solution to the divide is the “mixing” of the races.

Marriage must remain a sacred personal choice and not ever become a Government policy that pushes a “race mingling” agenda as was attempted under the Burnham dictatorship.

On the vital issue of national security, there are two reports that are languishing and gathering dust: The International Council of Jurists and Disciplined Forces Commission both recommended that Guyana’s armed forces must reflect the country’s diversity if there is to be security from all threats, including internal political violence, but no government has yet moved to correct the blatant racial imbalance in our army and police.

The overarching document that will craft the way forward for a Guyana of inclusive and fully participatory government of, for and by its peoples is the much-needed reformed constitution.

This is where real social cohesion will begin. The APNU/AFC Coalition did promise such reform. We must hold them to their promise.

GAWU congress set for August U

nder the theme, “United Struggles for Workers’ Rights, Democracy and a Secure Future,” the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) will organise its 21st Delegates Congress to be held from August 2023, at Bath, West Coast Berbice.

It is expected that hundreds of delegates coming from GAWU’s wide range of memberships; with majority being the field and factory workers of the largest Unit – the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo), will be present at the Union’s highest decision-making forum along with a number of fraternal organisations.

With its packed programme expecting to last three days, the Congress will ensure that workers

are given recognition for their devoted service to the Union.

The assembly for these delegates will also allow the presentation of the General Council’s report with discussions which would cover a variety of issues and include a broad assessment of specific global events, as well as the domestic developments since the previous congress among other important topics.

After being elected by the Congress delegates, the new General Council of the Union will be tasked with fulfilling the decisions and finding solutions, which will then be disputed and permitted by the Congress.

The Union expressed pride in having represented and protected it’s entity from attempts which

served to create division, since their last congress, highlighting that with an optimistic approach, they

have intentions for their unity and militancy will ensure a industrious congress.

en at around 11:00h when she heard an explosion followed by large flames erupting at the front of the home.

“This morning I was cooking, and I hear something mek pow! This thing bust. From

the time I hear this thing bust, when I look, I see fire in front ah the house. If you see this thing!” the visibly shaken woman relayed.

Duncan noted that upon seeing the blaze, she quickly ran out of the home and began shouting to alert neighbours.

“I run downstairs and starting shouting for Les. I said Les, Les watch, watch fire and when Les watch he said oh Jesus Christ,” she recapped.

The woman told Guyana Times that she was home

alone at the time, and was unable to save anything since the flames engulfed quickly.

“Everything I loss. Is just wa I got on right now. All me money that I save, all my papers, my daughter papers that she give me to keep.

Everything gone,” the grieving woman wailed.

The Guyana Fire Service was alerted but despite valiant efforts by the firefighters and residents, the building was completely burnt.

An investigation has since been launched.

atriotism, national pride and excitement ran high as thousands of Guyanese flocked the Guyana National Stadium at Providence to be part of four exciting Hero Caribbean Premier League home matches which will no doubt have a continuing redounding positive impact on the country’s overall economic and tourism development.

It must be stated from the outset that the Hero CPL managed to also unify a very much divided Guyana as persons from all sections of society regardless of their race, creed, Michael Younge sexual orientation and political persuasion rallied behind the so far triumphant Guyana Amazon Warriors.

So high was the amount of unity and cohesiveness during the past three weeks that it is widely believed that the tournament stood out as one of the clear examples of avenues that could be used to push the Government’s social cohesion agenda by the utilisation of sport as a mechanism to bridge social and racial gaps that exist in our society.

It was this unity and display of cohesiveness that has no doubt motivated and inspired the good performances delivered by the players and organisers of the 2016 tournament thus far. While Guyana would have again lost its bid to host the finals of the game, Providence remains one of the most talked about, hyped and packed venues when compared to the others in the league as far as hosting international cricket events and CPL matches are concerned.

Also, the Hero CPL games came to Guyana at a time when there has been a notable slowdown in domestic trade and business.

Interestingly, the tournament came to the country at a time too when small businesses were struggling to catch their hands because of various factors which were working against them while depleting their expected levels of revenues and profitability.

It therefore provided these small businesses with an opportunity to maximum their profits through sale of small portions of confectionaries near the stadium and at other Hero CPL-associated parties and events. It provided those who signed up officially for the bread and breakfast initiative with another means of garnering revenue because scores of overseas-based Guyanese returned home while there was an increase in tourist arrivals for the matches here.

Larger scale businesses and companies also benefited tremendously from the hosting of CPL matches here and while many of them would have maximised the marketing opportunities available via the tournament to boost sales and achieve brand popularity, others settled for just mounting promotions to give back to their loyal customers by providing them opportunities to join the biggest party in sport.

The Hero CPL also saw the occupancy rates at local hotels, bars, sports clubs, and community shops who had access to the televised games broadcast significantly boosted as well as their profitability.

The A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance for Change Government’s endorsement of the event and the laudable involvement of key ministers and personnel in handing out of awards and participation in local Hero CPL events demonstrates their commitment to the development of sport, the success of the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the upwards movement of the direct and indirect benefits to the country’s young tourism sector because of market access and promotional opportunities for Destination Guyana.

Research shows that the Guyana economy leads others in the league as far as the benefits it accrues from the injection of millions of US dollars each year it hosts the tournament, leaving out the other noteworthy indirect benefits.

As such more companies should get on-board the league by entering into mutual and lucrative deals with the Guyana Franchise owners and providing various forms of endorsement and sponsorship for the Amazon Warriors whenever allowed and applicable according to the existing rules and agreement framework.

Secondly, the Government led by its Education, Tourism and Business ministries must do much more to press the owners of the Hero CPL and the regional organisers to bring the semifinals and finals to Guyana even if it means investing more resources and incentives for this to happen.

The truth is, Guyana is a cricket-starved nation and the Hero CPL provides an opportunity for the hunger of cricket lovers and supporters to be satisfied; even if a lot of other regional and international matches are not brought as we would like to the country.

As the Warriors continue their bid for dominance in this year’s tournament, every Guyanese is duty bound to stand solidly behind the team and its franchise owners who have brought so much entertainment, cricket fun and countless opportunities for business to these shores over the last few years via their continued sponsorship and involvement in the league.

Serial thief pleads guilty to multimillion-dollar thefts

W

hen we think about things being unhealthy we usually think about our physical self and wellbeing, but the state of our emotional being is of utmost importance to the quality of life we lead. Who we surround ourselves with can have a huge impact on our emotional health and in the areas we may not have control over, for instance at work, the way we choose to interact with people can be significant in keeping a positive state of mind.

One of the most important relationships we become involved with which impacts us on a daily basis is the partner we choose. For whatever reasons we are attracted to, or fall in love with our partners, the reality of that relationship as it plays out over the weeks, months and years often teaches us a thing or two about our initial reasons for being with them!

Whether people change as they grow or have always had certain tendencies but managed to keep them hidden in the initial stages, or we were just too blind with new feelings to notice things that cause difficulties later down the line, people often find themselves in relationships that are counterproductive to their mental and physical health.

It can be difficult to disengage yourself from a long-term partner, especially if there are children involved. If you are unhappy in your relationship and it is not due to abuse but maybe selfish or thoughtless behaviour or a simple clash of personalities, there is a good chance you can work out ways to improve it. There is always the possibility that a new approach or awareness can shift things to a healthier plane.

A healthy relationship is not necessarily one where you spend every possible moment together, in fact the most successful and fulfilling relationships are those in which each person has personal interests of their own and they enjoy time with friends and family both with and without their partner. The healthier each person’s own life is outside of the relationship, the more likely they will be happier within the relationship.

Relationships take work. They come with lots of ups and downs and they can give us the most intense feelings both wonderful and despairing. Sometimes we have to consider if it is ourselves who are failing to contribute to a healthy status.

Also to consider is if we allow a partner to treat us less than respectfully we have to take responsibility for allowing it to continue. Not speaking up in a calm manner, or failing to communicate needs and listen to those of our partner may similarly contribute to a failing relationship.

What does a healthy relationship look like? It is a relationship in which you feel safe and comfortable expressing yourself even if your opinions are different from your partner’s. It’s about having those opinions valued and listened to without judgement but with understanding.

There is great importance in supporting each other’s goals in life and respecting each other’s feelings and friends.

Also in accepting responsibility for yourself and accepting any past wrong doing, admitting when you are wrong and communicating openly and truthfully.

It is making a concerted effort to ensure there is a fair distribution of work and responsibility for the relationship, household and children. Making money decisions together so that both benefit from financial arrangements regardless of who earns the money; as often a woman has priorities that do not allow her to pursue great financial return. Partners need to seek mutually satisfying resolutions to conflict, be able to accept change and be willing to compromise.

If someone has never witnessed or experienced such a relationship it is not surprising that they expect less from a partner. Adults should be trying to model such relationships for their children or at least be teaching them about the importance of a fair distribution of power, respect for one another and encouraging each other’s goals.

Knowing what you are looking for in a relationship gives you a better chance of finding it or finding someone who is willing to work with you in order to achieve a state where both of you feel valued and important.

You have to offer your partner all the things that you require and not just expect it from them. If you are willing to, and you try to give your partner all they need for a healthy relationship then you deserve to receive the same.

teenager from the mining town of Linden appeared before the Wales Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Clive Nurse to answer a barrage of larceny charges.

Sharif Ford, 17, of Lot 19 Industrial Area, Linden, pled guilty to three separate charges but entered a not guilty plea on three others.

It is alleged that on July 11, 2016 at Retrieve, McKenzie, Linden, Ford broke and entered the building of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) where he made off with: six USB chargers; five jet sets; 28 cellular phones; 1370 pre-paid phone cards; 100 sim cards; and $12,160 cash, all amounting to $2,229,047, all property of GTT. Ford pled Guilty on this offence.

In evidence provided by the Police prosecutor, it was noted that at about 04:00h on July 11, Forde was stopped

by Police while on patrol at Yarirabo, McKenzie.

After a search was carried out, Forde’s haversack was found to contain the items and had confessed that he

stole them.

When asked by Magistrare Nurse for a response, the defendant maintained his guilty plea.

He also conceded guilt on charges which stated that between July 4 and 5, he broke and entered the variety shop of Rohani Singh, also of McKenzie and stole $80,000 worth in groceries.

The Court heard that the shop owner, Singh, knows the defendant since her son was a school mate of Ford’s.

The young man also admitted that between August 22 and 23, 2015, at the McKenzie Market, he broke and entered the shop of Lenox

Wilson and stole $20,000 in cash and $10,000 in groceries.

He however objected to a number of other thefts, which the Police alleged he committed.

The Court also heard that on November 30, 2015, at Republic Avenue, McKenzie the defendant allegedly broke into the building of Cell Smart Incorporated and stole 15 cellular phones; 19 phone cases; one sim card cutter; four cellphone chargers; three USB cables; eight cellphone batteries; seven flash drives; one selfie stick; five earpieces; all to a total value of $678,700.

Ford expressed that he was not guilty of this offence.

Further, the teenager was also accused but pled not guilty to allegedly robbing, at Linden, the store belonging to Banwantie Sirpaul of $500,000 in cash in May 2016; and allegedly breaking and entering the store of Celena Ramdyall and stealing $80,000 cash, also in May 2016.

The defendant told the court that he hasn’t had a job since leaving school but currently lives alone. Ford further noted that this was the first time he was charged for such offences.

The Police Prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that Ford would commit similar offences if released and that he would “interfere” with some the virtual complainants as he personally knows them.

All of the matters, including sentencing on the guilty pleas, were transferred to Linden Magistrate’s Court.

Ford will make his next court appearance on July 27, when a probation report is expected to be presented to the court before sentencing.

Son of cane harvester tops Enterprise Primary

hey say any good parent would wish their child/children achieve more than they have in their life. That is exactly the case with Imran Ally, a cane harvester attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (GuySuCo) Enmore Estate.

A resident of Enterprise, on the East Coast of Demerara, Ally has always dreamt of his son, Joel Ally, becoming someone of worth and good standing in society, and of course, better his father’s achievements. Judging from the recently announced results of the National Grade Six Assessment, young Joel is heading in the right direction, and no one could be more satisfied and excited than his parents.

The 11-year-old, who has not yet decided on a career he would like to pursue, emerged as the top students of Enterprise Primary, notching up 532 marks and a place at the prestigious Bishop’s High School; one of the top academic institu-

“I studied hard for the exams, and I’m happy with my performance,” Joel said.

The young top students expressed gratitude to his

parents, whom he said are very supportive of his ambitions to succeed at school.

His father was obviously proud of the achievement.

“Well, me wish he the best,

and me hope he continue to do well in the future.”

Joel Ally was among of group of students who performed exceedingly well at the examination, securing spots at some of the country’s top secondary schools.

Ronald Moonielall, with 520 marks, earned a spot at St Rose’s High, while Talia Andrews (513 marks), Wazim Abdool (512 marks) and Reshma Mohabir (508 marks) will all be turning out to St Joseph High at the start of the new term in September.

Another student with over 500 marks was Ezekiel Siland (503), who will start out at President’s College in the new term.

The achievements of these students were duly recognised by the school and the Enterprise Support Group of New York when the graduation exercise was held recently. Additionally, for the first time, the New York group also made a significant contribution towards the Enterprise Nursery School graduation.

All told, the Support Group injected approximately G$400,000 in cash and trophies for the two graduations. The outstanding students were presented with cash and trophies, while each of the students from the nursery school took home a trophy.

Over 175 youngsters from the two schools were recognised for their performance.

President of the Enterprise Support Group of New York, Anil Gopaul, addressing the graduates, told them to continue to put in the hard work and success will be theirs. He also commended the parents for playing a major role in the success of the students.

Gopaul said the Support Group will continue to assist in whatever way pos-

sible to develop the community, especially the youth population.

Local Steering Committee member, Videsh Lall, who is a teacher by profession, also warned the students who would now pursue a secondary school life, to be cautious about the negative influences that they may encounter. “Stay grounded, because there will be lots of negativity circling around you; choose wisely and make the right decisions.”

Lall added the Enterprise Support Group of New York would continue to partner with the schools, since the aim is to encourage and motivate the next generation of Enterprise residents to aim for great things in life.

…urged to use technology wisely

Hindu youths from across Guyana attended the National Youth Conference at Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra, Prashad Nagar

undreds of youths hailing from various communities across the country attended a National Hindu Youth conference at the Sanskritik Kendra, Prashad Nagar, hosted by the Dharmic Naujawaan.

The activity was held under the theme, “Moulding tomorrow’s Hindu leaders” and coincides with National Youth Week, Naujawaan ka hapta.

During the opening of the one-day conference, president of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Dr Vindhya Persaud, urged youths to use technology wisely - especially mobile devices - to become wiser and better individuals. Dr Persaud said the conference was held with the aim of moulding Hindu youths to be better leaders and more responsible in society.

Speaking on technology the Sabha’s president urged those in attendance to use technology constructively since the entire world is said to be at the fingertips: “Use your technology to better yourself, do things that you strongly believe in, use it to solve problems that have plagued society.”

Youths were urged to form themselves into groups and be better empowered in the fight against abuse, suicide and violence, rights for girls, and litera-

cy.

Additionally, Persaud advised that young people gathered at the event: “drive the extra mile in making things happen and never stop dreaming, and to believe in life.”

Youths were also encouraged and empowered to “brush off failures” and to make something out of their life by being practical. The organisation’s head emphasised that the gift of life is precious and one should never live in regrets.

Chairman of the central Naujawan Kumar Kissoon addressed the youths, explaining that the conference seeks to empower youths to face day-to-day challenges.

Guest speaker for the conference was senior economist of Bank of Guyana Reshma Ramratan. She discussed the importance of young people being educated and appreciating the value of life.

During the sessions youths were educated on the existence and effects of emotional abuse, leadership, becoming an effective and efficient leader of tomorrow, career guidance, photography, finance, law, engineer and medicine.

The dharmic Naujawaan is the youth-arm of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha.

President Granger is answerable to the people of the Rupununi

his government is come to be known as one that sports, eats and travels, while it dissimulates the country’s business from the people it ought to be serving. It is the government which has endeavoured to massively increase taxes in every possible way imaginable while maiming the economy in less than a Anna Correia year of governance.

One would have thought that a coalesced government would have the advantage of richer, wider experience and perspectives. Instead, in less than a month of being installed, the coalition began demonstrating a disturbing penchant for unabashed corruption cobbled with a certain level of impunity from public accountability and transparency. The arrogance meted out to the people of this country seems to have killed the spirit of the hardworking women and men – people who now only wait for this term to pass.

The Amerindians who petitioned the President to have Regional Executive Officer (REO) Carl Parker removed, also seem to have lost faith in the system. More than three months after the petition was submitted, no action has been taken by the President, and Carl Parker continues to violate indigenous rights in Region 9. Yesterday, during his 71st birthday festivities, President Granger was quoted as saying that he feels “a sense of confidence that people are with [him], that people understand where [he wants] to go” and “the type of country [he wants] our children and grandchildren to inherit”. What about the Amerindians of the Rupununi then? What are they to inherit other than a Rupununi which in time would become tarnished by political and racial divisiveness caused by one man, who the President by his inaction and silence, protects? Are they to inherit “shoes that grow” while the President’s residence and Ministry is decorated with 6000 solar panels initially intended for Amerindian homes?

Interestingly, the President was solicited in person by the petitioners but has relegated the responsibility to act, to the Communities Minister, Ronald Bulkan, who in a pompous display of arrogance proceeded to question the legitimacy of the signatures. The question is, if the Amerindian minority cannot have faith in the President, then how are they to contribute to the forging of a better country for their “children and grandchildren”?

What about the people of Tasserene in the Upper Mazaruni who to date have not seen the deliverance of an Absolute Grant, while a Natural Resources Minister continues to own mining blocks on their lands? This is a flagrant violation of the Amerindian Land Titling project document which is legally binding for stakeholders, as well as the provisions made to guarantee indigenous rights under the Norway/Guyana Agreement. Although the matter has been brought before the attention of the President and subject Ministers since February of this year, no response has been issued to stakeholders and beneficiaries.

Perhaps the tactic of this Granger government is to sap the energy from the people as they wait in vain for the resolution of problems which have daily consequences on their lives. However, the President and his government’s disregard for indigenous rights, is being archived by Amerindians, blunder after blunder. So is the indifference from international stakeholders such as the United Nations Development Programme under the leadership of Khadija Musa and the Norwegian delegation jointly responsible for the forest programme in Guyana, both of which were directly informed of these indigenous rights violations.

Unsurprisingly, President Granger benefits from a current of thought which would like us to believe that he has no prior knowledge of, or has no control over the exactions committed by the members of his government – an argument which is unquestionably flawed and inapplicable to these two instances where his intervention was directly requested.

Consequently, President Granger remains accountable to the people of the Rupununi and Tasserene, without which he will be reminded incessantly of his inefficiency to guarantee the rights of the people he was installed to serve.

Breaking the cycle of absentee fathers: Leo Club launches “U Turn” project …aims to tackle fatherless homes

n efforts to combat the high number of fatherless homes, the Leo Club of Georgetown in collaboration with the Men’s Affairs Bureau of the Social Protection Ministry launched the “U turn” project on Saturday (yesterday).

The project launched at St Stanislaus College, is aimed at equipping men between the ages of 17 and 27, with skills, knowledge and resources to become better fathers to their children and better men in their communities.

U-Turn is a pilot project that is attempting to focus on three main areas where they believe young men that are fathers can better equip themselves for parenthood using three pillars which are to: be

present, be a provider, and be a father.

Phase one of the project commenced on Saturday with life skills training addressing social, psychological and attitudinal factors associated with the use of legal and illegal substances.

hance the development of basic skills, personal competence, educational and job skills.

Speaking to this publication James noted that he wanted the club to do something that was more voluntarism.

“I came up with the idea of U-turn, along with the help of my colleagues, and after it was discussed we began planning.”

James further added that the project is not tackling any specific community. He said the project is catering for as many men who are willing to participate in the three sessions of the project.

Phases two and three will be held at the National Library which will be delving into Family Law and parenting skills in the upcoming Saturdays.

EgyptAir crash: On-board recording discusses fire

A

n audio recording made on board an EgyptAir flight that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea in May discusses a fire, investigators say. An Egyptian-led team said on Saturday that the information was found on a cockpit flight recording.

But the investigative

committee said it was too early to say where or why the fire broke out. All 66 people on board died when flight MS804, flying from Paris to Cairo, crashed on May 19.

The new information appears to back up evidence from the flight recorder of smoke in the cabin.

showed signs of high temperature damage and soot on the jet’s front section.

Automated electronic messages sent out by the plane had shown smoke detectors going off in a toilet and in the avionics area below the cockpit, minutes before the plane disappeared.

to the crash. Egyptian investigators have not ruled out any reasons for the crash, including terrorism, particularly as such catastrophic fires on passenger planes are so rare. President pick after days of uncertainty

fter a week of uncharacteristic hesitation and secondguessing, Donald Trump formally introduced the Indiana governor, Mike Pence, as his Vice Presidential running mate on Saturday.

The event, at the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan, was crafted not only as a curtain-raiser for the Republican national convention that begins in Cleveland on Monday but also as an opportunity to make a virtue of the differences between the politically inexperienced, ideologically freewheeling candidate and Pence, an unflappable conservative with evangelical Christian credentials and experience in office inside and outside of Washington.

The event itself, however, was not particularly slick. After a rambling introduction from Trump,

which touched on wellworn campaign talking points as well as the Nice terror attack and the failed coup attempt in Turkey, Pence mentioned getting the call from Trump on Wednesday.

The phrase was somewhat jarring. Trump announced his selection of Pence on Friday. He was, however, reported to have long hesitated and hedged over the pick, almost up to the moment it was made official.

The billionaire was reportedly leaning toward the New Jersey governor Chris Christie, only to be persuaded by his children and his campaign Chairman, Paul Manafort, to follow not gut instinct but political pragmatism.

he President of the Barbados Cancer Society believes that if Barbadians pay closer attention to their health, the number of people diagnosed with cancer could be reduced by as much as 40 per cent.

While admitting that Barbadians were “very aware” of cancer, Dr Dorothy Cooke-Johnson said the problem was that they were not acting on it.

“If people start off and do the right thing, we could probably reduce 40 per cent of the cancer in Barbados by getting rid of these late stages for breast, cervix, stomach and lung, stomach

and colon and prostate cancers and also other cancers which are environmentally and lifestyle associated.

“The main thing to do is, from the time you are young, watch the diet and get rid of the carbohydrates, the sweet stuff and the fats and try to eat fruits and fish. Try to have a good diet and you have to exercise a lot and keep your body lean and slim,” Cooke-Johnson told the SATURDAY SUN during an interview at the Financial Services Commission (FSC), where she collected a cheque for $5005 on behalf of the Cancer Society. Brazil deports FrancoAlgerian physicist convicted in past terror plot

razil has deported the Franco-Algerian nuclear physicist Adlene Hicheur, who was convicted in 2012 for his involvement in a French terror plot, after rejecting a request for an extension to his work visa, the Justice Ministry said late Friday.

In a statement, the ministry said the decision had been taken in the “national interest” without giving any further details.

Brazil is in the midst of tightening security ahead of the Olympics which start August 5 and said separately on Friday that it would enhance the scope of operations following a deadly truck attack in Nice earlier this week.

Hicheur had been deported to France, though a spokesperson for the Justice Ministry would not confirm the information.

Hicheur was sentenced by a Paris court to five years in prison in 2012, on charges of helping to plot an attack in France in 2009 with an al Qaeda militant in Algeria.

A former researcher at the prestigious CERN physics lab in Geneva, Hicheur was found guilty of providing logistical advice using encrypted messages sent via the Internet.

enezuela has opened its border with Colombia for the second time this month to allow people to cross over to shop for basic foods and medicines.

Last week 35,000 crossed over for the first time since the border was closed a year ago by President Nicolás Maduro to fight cross-border crime.

Officials said they were expecting even larger crowds this weekend.

Many basic goods are in short supply in Venezuela because of a severe economic crisis in the country.

The border across a pedestrian bridge connecting Tachira in Venezuela and Cucuta in Colombia opened on Saturday, a day

earlier than authorities from both countries had previously announced.

Officials said they wanted to avoid the buildup of too many people.

It was expected to stay open for about 12 hours.

Venezuela has suffered severe shortages for months as a result of the falling price of oil which is the country’s prime source of income.

f there were any doubts about how well prepared Pakistan were to challenge England in this series, they should have now been dispelled. The progress made by Alastair Cook’s side has hinged on their ability to seize key moments in a Test but at Lord’s they have come up against experienced and skilful opposition who refused to buckle when the pressure mounted.

England would have hoped to get closer to Pakistan’s first-innings total but Yasir took his tally to six wickets and Woakes was left stranded as the last three wickets fell 12 runs inside four overs.

Misbah began with a combination of Wahab’s pace and Yasir’s wiles and the pair saw off England’s innings within 40 minutes of the first session.

Broad struck one boundary off Wahab but was then worked over by a succes-

sion of short balls, before a brace of yorkers ended his stay. The first flew through past leg stump but Broad did not heed the warning and hung back again to be bowled off his boot next ball.

Finn has been known to block up an end and Woakes was happy to let him have the strike but he fell to Yasir, trapped in front of leg stump by a ball that skidded on. That gave Yasir the first sixfor by a Pakistan spinner in England since Mushtaq

Ball sliced a four off Yasir for his first Test runs but he was run out from the first ball of the next over, with Woakes pushing for two to retain the strike. Digicel renovates Gymnasium’s dorms Jones aiming to turn Gymnasium – aids in repainting and donation of 40 mattresses

elecommunications giants, Digicel handed over the renovated dorms of the National Gymnasium to the Director of Sport, Christopher Jones on Saturday.

According to Head of Customer care Sherwyn Osborne, said the renovation saw the repainting of the dorms and also the donation of 40 mattresses which was done in time to facilitate the housing of students for the company’s ongoing Schools Football Championship.

Obsoure said that it was a significant investment and that the facility now could be opened to other visiting teams across the various sport disciplines.

He said, “this is not only for football, it is for Basketball, Netball, any sport that we have in Guyana that anybody wants to come and stay here, without having to come, without having to come and look at an additional cost factor; the location is ideal”.

Jones said, “like Digicel, we would like to call on corporate Guyana to help complete the dorms, some additional works that have to be done, is the PVC sealing and if there is any goodwill ambassadors, any company that would want to do like Digicel , to make those donations so our athletes who have to use the space for accommodation, will feel comfortable”.

He added, “We have recognised that our athletes are our ambassadors and we would want to treat them as such, and we would need a space where they could be housed, they must be comfortable in keeping with the recognition that they are ambassadors.”

irector of Sport Christopher Jones has revealed that the National Sports Commission (NSC) currently has plans to remodel the current National Gymnasium located on Mandela Avenue into one of Guyana’s premier sports facility.

In speaking to media operatives on Saturday, the Director disclosed that, “I set out with an objective to make sure that the facilities that we have are up to a certain standard, we would have submitted to government last year to do works at the Gymnasium which will total a cost of $440M”.

The remodelled structure would see modern courts being built for various sports disciplines and the facility is expected to be one for all and make good usage.

“This [remodelled gymnasium] would see the putting down of new courts, which will be for Futsal,

Hockey, Lawn Tennis, another Basketball court; there will be a space identified for senior citizens, there will be renovations works done on the canteen area for young people who just want a space to relax in the afternoon, as well as a miniature golf course”, Jones explained.

The proposal is not new to the Government, since it was submitted to this year’s but did not find favour; however, the Director is hoping that upon resubmission, a change in fortunes might occur.

he Guyana Association of Women Police (GAWP)/Rising Sun Turf Club one day horse race meet, planned for Rising Sun Turf Club today, has been shifted to the Bushlot Turf Club on the West Coast of Berbice.

The event which is scheduled to commence at 13:00hrs today, was shifted from Rising Sun Turf Club because of the sogginess of the track due to persistent rain.

SPORTs Hero CPL honours Sir Garry Sobers ahead of his 80th birthday celebrations

T

he great Sir Garfield Sobers received a special presentation ahead of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) between Barbados Tridents and Trinbago Knight Riders at the Kensington Oval on Saturday morning.

One of the game’s greatest players, whose influence and legacy extends across the Caribbean and beyond, Sir Garry will celebrate his 80th birthday later this month and to mark this milestone, Hero CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe was joined by dignitaries from Barbados Tridents – including Sid Mallya and T. Venkat Vardhan – as well as Tridents captain Kieron Pollard and William Griffith (CEO, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.).

Mr. Mallya also presented Sir Garry with a signed Tridents jersey and speaking at the event, CPL CEO Damien O’Donohoe said: “Sir Garry is an icon of Barbados, the West Indies and the game of cricket and we are delighted to pay tribute to him and his enormous contribution across the sport ahead of his 80th birthday celebrations on 28th July.

– young Rovman Powell uses cricket as road out of poverty

F

or the average child, playing the popular sport of cricket is a hobby, but for a young Rovman Powell, he saw it as a way to escape the poverty that plagued his small family, which includes his single mother and younger sister.

Powell, 22, grew up in the Bannister district in Old Harbour.

His mother, Joan Plummer, owned a bar when they were young but had to shut it down about seven years ago. She now works in the cold room at Jamaica Broilers.

“Life for me growing was never easy because many a nights we would have to go to bed hungry because mommy never had a job all the time, so we wouldn’t have food at times,” Powell told THE WEEKEND STAR. “I grew up in poverty, and I am determined not to die in poverty,” said the firsttime player for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League T20 competition.

Citing his mother as his main motivation for his drive to success, Powell expressed happiness at his success so far as a regional cricketer.

“I work hard for everything because I want to see her tears and hard work come to fruition by doing well and being able to help her financially,” said Powell.

According to the Old Harbour alumni, one of the

proudest moments in his life was when he was able to start supporting his mother financially. At the time, the University of the West Indies (UWI) student was playing professionally for the Combined Campuses in the regional competition.

“When I told my mother that she can stop sending me money, and I sent her the first lump sum of cash, it made me the happiest man alive because a nuff hungry we face, and I was finally able to care for her,” said Powell.

The UWI scholarship athlete said he had always seen himself as the “man of the house” and recalled incidents from his childhood when he played this role.

“Whenever we were younger, and there was a little bit of food, I would always make them eat before me because if anything, I would bear the hunger because me know she try her best,” said

Powell.

The education major, who specialises in geography and social studies, said his mother was very proud of his progress in cricket.

“The other day, she sent me a voice note telling me how proud she was of me and how happy she was to see all that I have done and continue to do that made me nearly tear up,” said Powell.

The right-handed pacebowling all-rounder, who has played for the Combined Campuses since 2014, told THE WEEKEND STAR that at age 15, coaches recognised his talent and started grooming him for the big leagues.

Powell, who has played in all five Tallawah games since the start of the tournament, expressed pride at playing alongside cricketing stars such as Chris Gayle, Kumar Sangakkarra, and Andre Russell.

“Playing with persons I looked up to my entire career makes me feel good because I always had believed if I worked hard enough for what I want, I’d see that happen,” he said.

But the cricketer is not satisfied with his progress as he has more goals to achieve in his career.

“My ultimate dream is to play for the West Indies in all formats and also to play for recognised clubs in leagues like the Big Bash and Indian Premier League,” he added.

he Trinbago Knight Riders have found some of the form that saw them conquer the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) last season as they brushed aside Barbados Tridents at the Kensington Oval on Saturday afternoon. A blistering fifty from New Zealander Colin Munro saw them chase down a stiff target of 173 with 14 balls to spare.
