Jagdeo blasts “doctored” Police report in Berbice LGE fraud case

…questions GPF’s failure to question perpetrators

pposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has been left pondering over the Police’s definition of forgery after Justice Navindra Singh dismissed the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s (PPP/C) legal challenge to remove some 50 names from an Alliance For Change (AFC) list of backers for the November 12 Local Government Elections.

Justice Singh ruled earlier this week that there was no evidence of fraud, trickery or threat and noted that there was no basis to ask the Chief Elections Officer to strike out the names of the nominators from the AFC’s Lists of Candidates. Jagdeo, however, feels the case could have been dismissed due to the Police’s report in the matter being “heavily doctored”.

He said the new life the AFC was given with the recent ruling will be 'short lived' as he stressed that his party will be seeking legal advice on the report as he indicated that the case could be challenged all the way to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).

“We are fighting for the rights of all Guyanese; this is a test case to us. Whether it is concluded before the elections or not, it is not important for us but we have to get a ruling on this matter all the way maybe to the CCJ,” Jagdeo revealed.

He also questioned why the Police did not interview the alleged perpetrators though they were seen on television denying the alleged forgery. Jagdeo, reading from Police report on Thursday, said one of Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo’s family members tricked Hemraj Mohadeo, Anita Mohadeo and Parvattie Thomas into backing the AFC. “Now the report is heavily doctored… a Ryan Mohadeo says that Abraham Nagamootoo went to his home with papers in his hands and told him that he wanted to become the Chairman for Bloomfield/Whim Villages and that he needed persons to support him.

Questioning the dismissal of the case, the Opposition Leader queried whether there is a new parameter for forgery: “So now trickery, forgery, misleading people and deception is not really deception unless you hold the person’s hand and force him to sign the paper… Nagamootoo through trickery said that the document had nothing to do with elections and got Ryan Mohadeo to sign the document... that’s a new parameter for forgery, if you do not hold the persons hand and force him to sign the document then you cannot be committed or

He later observed that there was another case of deception recorded in the report where AFC supporters allegedly tricked a number of persons into signing theirs list, claiming to be conducting the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) registration. “ . . . [ A b r a h a m ] Nagamootoo went and met with them and told them that he was doing registration for the upcoming elections and that he required their ID cards and they have to sign which they all did… here in the report Nagamootoo told them that he was doing registration on behalf of GECOM, is this not trickery?” Jadgeo questioned.

According to Jagdeo, the report is replete with examples of deceit, trickery and fraudulent behaviour on the part of AFC members in procuring signatures.

He further questioned why the Police report was not sent to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice but went instead directly to Justice Singh.

Shafraz Beekham, of Letter Kenny Village, Corentyne, and 49 other persons from the Bloomfield/Whim, Corentyne area, filed affidavits saying that they were misled into believing that they were supporting a party of their choice when in reality, they actually were “misled” into signing AFC’s nominator lists.

The PPP’s legal suit was filed on behalf of Beekham.

IDS is the leading cause of death among adolescents (10-19) in Africa and the second leading cause of death among adolescents globally. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), AIDS-related deaths among adolescents have tripled since 2000 while decreasing among all other age groups, which can be largely attributed to a generation of children infected with HIV perinatally who are growing into adolescence without access to life-saving interventions.

In a report by UNAIDS, experts have warned that ages 15-24 years is a highly dangerous time for women.

The report contains detailed data on the complexities of HIV and reveals that girls’ transition to womanhood is a very dangerous time, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. “Young women are facing a triple threat. They are at high risk of HIV infection, have low rates of HIV testing, and have poor adherence to treatment. The world is failing young women and we urgently need to do more.”

One of the main points emphasised is that HIV prevention is key to ending the AIDS epidemic among young women and the cycle of HIV infection needs to be broken.

Recent data from South-Africa shows that young women are acquiring HIV from adult men, while men acquire HIV much later in life after they transition into adulthood and continue the cycle of new infections. On the positive end, the report also shows that the life-extending impact of treatment is working.

While grand global initiatives are needed to raise funds and to develop new drugs, it is the local people in the field who will defeat the epidemic. As the world’s HIV community focuses its attention and enthusiasm on World AIDS Day, which is held on December 1 each year, this lesson must not be forgotten.

Locally, the National Aids Programme Secretariat in its re-launching of its national days of testing for HIV/AIDS, announced that particular focus will be placed on youths and young adults.

A representative from the National Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) centre announced that the Secretariat’s programmatic data has revealed that persons between the ages of 15 to 19 and 20 to 25 in Guyana are infected and being diagnosed on a daily basis with HIV. This, she noted, calls for urgent actions to be taken.

Amidst the call for urgent action, the VCT representative also called attention to the large number of school children who are infected with the disease and outlined the urgency of developing a new strategy to target young people in Guyana.

According to UNAIDS estimates, HIV incidence has fallen in many of the most severely affected countries because adolescents and young people are adopting safer sexual practices. In several countries, risk behaviour is on the decline, including the initiation of sex before age 15, sex with multiple partners and sex without condoms.

In countries with generalised epidemics, schools can be a critical venue for reaching adolescents with the information and skills they need to avoid infection. In fact, evidence shows that school-based sex education can be effective in changing the knowledge, attitudes and practices that lead to risk behaviour.

Preventing HIV in countries with low prevalence or where the epidemic is concentrated in specific populations is especially challenging since the spread of the virus is fuelled by high-risk, often stigmatised behaviour.

UNICEF, in a report, outlined that turning the tide against AIDS will require more concentrated focus on adolescents and young people. This will involve strengthening partnerships across sectors and fostering meaningful involvement of adolescents in all aspects of programming and advocacy.

HIV remains a global issue when it comes to prevention among adolescents. As of a few years ago, almost 40 per cent of new HIV infections among adolescents (15-19) occurred outside sub-Saharan Africa. If current trends continue, hundreds of thousands more will become HIV-positive in the coming years. Since 2000, 30 million new infections were prevented, nearly eight million deaths averted, and 15 million people living with HIV are now receiving treatment.

There is still hope, but with the implementation of stronger prevention programmes, many young people will be spared the effects of this disease.

Saudi Arabia, in reversal, suggests Khashoggi’s killing was ‘premeditated’

audi Arabia’s public prosecutor said on Thursday that new evidence indicated that the killing of the dissident Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi had been “premeditated,” signalling yet another shift in the kingdom’s official story of his disappearance.

Khashoggi, a Virginia resident who wrote for The Washington Post, vanished at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

Since then, Saudi officials have said at various points that he left the facility alive and well after a short visit; that he was the target of a “rogue” operation by its intelligence service; and, as of last Saturday, that he had been strangled accidentally in a fistfight that broke out as a team of Saudi agents sought to convince him to return to the kingdom.

The new account was published Thursday in the Saudiowned media, and it acknowledged Turkish evidence of a planned assassination, which Turkish officials have been describing for weeks.

It adds to the mounting political pressure on the Trump administration to punish the kingdom, whose de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has been the White House’s closest Arab ally and the driver of its strategies for the region.

The Saudi shift came following a visit to Ankara by Gina Haspel, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. She had been expected to receive access to an audio recording of the killing and other evidence that the Turks have said point to orders to kill Khashoggi from the upper levels of the Saudi royal family.

Sabah, a newspaper close to Turkey’s intelligence agency, reported on Wednesday that Turkish officials had shared the recording and other evidence with Haspel.

on Thursday was an attempt to revise its previous public explanations before Washington received and digested evidence that would further discredit the kingdom, a person familiar with the Saudi strategy said.

The statement said that the kingdom’s public prosecutor had received new information from Turkey through a joint Saudi-Turkish investigation into Khashoggi’s death and that the kingdom’s own investigation was still continuing.

It was unclear from the statement whether Saudi Arabia itself had concluded that the killing was premeditated. Nor was it clear what information the kingdom may have gleaned from the 18 Saudis it has arrested in connection with Khashoggi’s death and the handful of senior officials who have lost jobs as a result of it.

All of the kingdom’s statements so far have sought to distance Crown Prince Mohammed from responsibility for authorising the killing, and the revision on Thursday did nothing to implicate him.

The Crown Prince himself has sought to project an image of business as usual, speaking to investors at a conference in Riyadh on Wednesday and on Thursday presiding over the first meeting of a new committee tasked with restructuring the kingdom’s intelligence services in the wake of

Khashoggi’s killing.

But many current and former Western officials with experience in Saudi Arabia have said they find it hard to believe that such an operation was launched without his consent.

The kingdom’s shifting story came as one of Khashoggi’s sons, Salah, a dual Saudi-American citizen who had been barred by the Saudi authorities from leaving, departed the country for the United States, according to three friends of the family.

Salah Khashoggi’s departure came two days after the Saudis released a video of him shaking hands with King Salman and Prince Mohammed, who gave him their condolences. The images caused a large backlash on social media by critics of the crown prince who suspect he ordered Khashoggi’s killing.

It was not immediately clear why the Saudis changed course and allowed Khashoggi’s son to travel.

Friends of the family had suspected that the Saudi authorities wanted to keep him in the kingdom to deter his relatives abroad from speaking out.

Saudi Arabia’s previous explanations for Khashoggi’s death were met with widespread scepticism from American lawmakers of both parties and several Western governments.

President Trump has called it “one of the worst in the history of cover-ups.”

But other American allies in the region, including Israel and the United Arab Emirates, are pressing the White House to stand by Prince Mohammed, a person familiar with White House deliberations said Thursday.

Both countries argue that the crown prince can still contribute to the broad White House goals for the region, including isolating Iran and selling a peace agreement with Israel to the Palestinians.

While the outrage in the United States and elsewhere over Khashoggi’s killing may require some sanctions or other measures against Saudi Arabia, this person said, the White House still does not foresee any meaningful threat to the crown prince’s grip on the levers of power. As a result, the United States and other Western governments must still deal with him despite any stigma from the Khashoggi killing or the kingdom’s changing explanations for it.

Earlier this week President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey called Khashoggi’s killing “premeditated murder” and asked a series of leading questions about who in Riyadh had ordered the operation.

Turkish officials have leaked several details that point to premeditation.

Among them: one member of a Saudi team that flew to Istanbul before the killing was a doctor specialising in autopsies who would have had no clear role to play in an interrogation, or even a kidnapping. Another resembled Khashoggi, dressed in his clothes and walked around Istanbul to create a false trail of security camera images that appeared to show he left the consulate alive.

Turkish officials have said that members of the team killed Khashoggi soon after he entered the consulate and dismembered his body with a bone saw, which they had brought with them.

The Turks have leaked to the news media the names of men on the Saudi team as well as photographs of them arriving at the airport and moving around Istanbul.

Several have ties to Prince Mohammed. Saudi Arabia has released no evidence to support its evolving story of what happened. Khashoggi’s body has not been found. (Excerpt from New York Times)

Murderers of Journalist Khashoggi must be brought to justice Dear Editor, We read of the ghastly murder of well-known Saudi Journalist American resident Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey. It would seem that the pen is mightier than the bullet or sword. Or is it? Clearly, a journalist has been silenced and only a few countries are speaking out against it. The weak response to murder may send the wrong message – don’t mess with powerful authoritarian leaders? Or will the world act against dictators and send a message that there would be serious consequences for attacking or murdering Journalists?

Dictators or strong men rulers hate journalists. We had our own experience in Guyana where reporters were killed or violently attacked as a routine policy during the period of the dictatorship; as is widely reported, the Burnham/Hoyte regimes identified opponents and dealt with them

ruthlessly with incredible brutality. We all remember Father Bernard Darke and the many attacks against Father Andrew Morrison, Moses Nagamootoo, Lionel Peters, and Rickey Singh and so many others during the period of the Burnham/ Hoyte dictatorships.

Burnham openly defied the world in killing opponents, including the great Walter Rodney, and attempted to kidnap Clive Thomas and shot at Yesu Persaud. There was also the attempted murder of Dr Josh Ramsammy and the framing of Dr Rupert Roopnaraine and Omowale. These were violent acts of defiance, but Burnham knew he could get away with them, because the US and UK were on his side. And most recently, Lincoln Lewis and David Hinds were removed from the State media.

Many Journalists are killed every year because they speak out against and

expose human rights violations. Dictators see reporters, advocates for democracy, and human rights activists as trouble makers. The Saudi Government is accepting responsibility as an operation that went wrong. Did it? Khashoggi was literally physically liquidated without a trace. His murder was gory and gruesome. Pieces of his body were recently found.

Authoritarian regimes know how to send fear to even courageous Journalists and champions of democracy – maim them or terminate their employment or target their families or threaten them. But it does not have to be that way if the democratic world and the great powers stand with Journalists.

Dictators will shiver if powerful countries like the US, UK, Canada, Germany and India take measures against rulers who attack Journalists. Had the ABC countries stood with

Dear Editor, As someone following in the press, the unacceptable and unhappy reports being made daily to the Commission of Inquiry that has been set up to probe the goings-on at the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, it is clear to me that there are two common threads running through most of these reports, with those being extreme corruption and a complete disregard for the human resources of the Georgetown municipality, both past and present.

In any decent, reputable and caring organisation, had there been even just a few of the atrocities committed – which, however, seem quite routine at that City Council – their human resources manager would have long been given the pink slip and possibly even prosecuted. But at the Georgetown municipality, it is no problem.

How could the officer whose responsibility it is to manage the Council’s human resources, just sit happily by and allow the deduction of NIS contributions, GRA income tax, credit union dues, etc, month after month for years from the poor hapless employees, without ensuring that same is remitted to the relevant agencies? This slackness is not only extremely callous of the HR, but against the law and a serious offence.

How could the human resources manager, knowing fully about the purported financial crunch of the Council, allow for the monthly payroll of the Council to swell to well over $100 million with a whopping number of approximately 800 employees, most of whom have no tools or materials to work with and thus are forced to idle all day long?

One can only hope that the enormous and wellknown problem of nepotism, cronyism and favouritism at the Council will be addressed by this Commission.

How could the human resources manager of the supposedly cash-strapped City Council support and accept the upgrading of her own Personnel Section from a modest and practical section, turning it into a huge useless, wasteful and expensive Human Resources Department? All this has allowed for is huge salary increases for those operating within, including herself, and the addition of numerous cushy super salaried positions, whilst the service from that division which was always appalling has now gotten even far worse.

The non-payment of gratuities and pensions to those who have retired from the Council after decades of unstinting service by the Council’s Human Resources Department is nothing short of aberrant, ruthless and fraudulent. How could they withhold these monies owed to these former employees, whilst placing themselves on higher salary scales and at the top of their scales, and paying themselves some 19 allowances.

How could this human resources manager be organising grand retreats to luxurious resorts, host grand celebratory lunches to mark various occasions and be sending their friends and relatives to seminars and meetings overseas while the ordinary worker faces severe medical risks due to the non-payment of the medical scheme contributions and others left to starve without their gratuities, pensions, insurances, officer deposit refunds, etc?

Does the HR care that employees who have to go into the trenches, spray dangerous chemicals and slaughter animals, lack the protective clothing and gear needed; the Constables are without uniforms and bulletproof vests; that many municipal buildings are unfit for habitation while hundreds of millions are being doled out to contractors without adherence to tender board procedures?

Listening to the daily reports of the Commission is like listening to some twisted soap opera.

Guyanese, Father Darke would not have been murdered, Dr Josh Ramsammy would not have been shot, Dr Rodney would not have been blown up to pieces, Minister Teekah would not have been murdered, and Ohene Koama, Edward Dublin, etc, would not have been killed.

Clearly, the written word scares regimes. But there must be a limit to how far a dictator or even a democrat would go to silence critics.

Silencing critics, regardless of the method, is plain unacceptable. Killing or maiming citizens or silencing critics or firing Journalists should have no place in a society.

No matter what the writing, a journalist must not be murdered. There must be ongoing Government international condemnation of what happened in Turkey even “if it was an interrogation that

went awry” as the Saudis say. No amount of money (not even US$110 billion) should be used as a reason to avoid ostracising killers or holding them to account.

But sadly, the world is not coming out against killers of Journalists like Khashoggi (except Turkey) and this kind of silence is sending a wrong message – it is an unambiguous message to all reporters that dictators will get you if you report on the bad things they do.

Unless the world comes out against what happened to Khashoggi, dissidents will be discouraged on speaking out against abuses meted out to Journalists like me who are championing human rights. And one should not tie the life of a person on business consequences. Dictators also need business – they have goods to sell. Economic sanctions

can be used as a weapon like what was done to South Africa during apartheid.

Foreign policy is about promoting national interest, but sanctioning murder or being silent to State murder can never be a foreign policy goal.

One cannot stand by and allow people to be murdered.

It was this type of view of national interest that inhibited the US, UK and Canada from confronting the dictatorship in Guyana about killing opponents in the 1970s and 1980s and rigging elections.

Justice must be served when people are murdered.

Whosoever gave the order to kill Jamal Khashoggi and whoever carried out the order must be brought to justice.

Nurses not paid for 9 months

Dear Editor, Editor, it is gross disrespect in our view, that after nine months of officially starting our duties within the health system, we are yet to be paid our salaries.

Editor, for some three years, we operated and studied as student nurses, eager to be qualified in our field.

For three years, we endured that heart-wrenching sum of $15,000 per month. Now that we have completed our studies and eagerly await our due salaries we have been working for, for nine months, some for six months and have not received a cent. This is disgraceful and goes against the claims of development and a “good life for all”. Editor, bills are piling up and so is our debt as many of us have

been asking our families for assistance and borrowing from friends.

It has been three months now, since we’ve been hearing that these payments would be made, but still nothing except excuses. This type of behaviour is not encouraging to attract young, bright people to this profession and it is certainly not encouraging for existing nurses. We call on the Health Minister Volda

Lawrence and President David Granger to ensure the smooth functioning of this vital State-sponsored service by ensuring your staffers the right to provide for ourselves and families. We would surely hate to exercise measures recently taken by the nation’s teachers.

y little guy does not like it when I cook or do laundry or do the dishes. Why am I not paying attention to him? But I soon realised that he loves to help. He puts clothes in the washing machine, gathers potatoes to bring to the kitchen, brings me clothes hangers. And yes, it takes much longer than if I had done it all myself. But he actually squeals with delight at being given his next task.

And I end up being much less frustrated." —Wendy Most parents wish their children would help more around the house. That would be a good thing, right?

The answer is yes, and not just because it makes our lives as parents easier. (The truth is, it would probably be easier to do it ourselves!) Research shows that children who have household responsibilities are more likely to step up and help others outside the home. My theory is that these children are accustomed to

helping, and they see their contributions as valuable.

Responsibility at home really does make children better citizens.

So why don't children help more, and what can you do about it in your own home?

Because children hate chores.

It's a reasonable attitude, given that most adults find housework boring and menial.

After all, children have so many other, more interesting, demands on their time. And they really can't see why it matters if the floor gets swept.

Solution:

Make it about fun and mastery. Remember that if you make the experience of contributing to the family feel like a chore, your child will avoid his chores like the plague. Instead, think of this as a chance for your child to enjoy getting good at something. Look at how she made the kitchen table shine!

Over time, they'll come to enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done, and even to take pride in being a capable cook or gardener.

Make it about connection and appreciation.

Recognise that your child d o e s n ' t see much

intrinsic value in household work, unless she's doing it with you. Instead of sending her off to work by herself, see the work as an opportunity to bond with her.

Play his favourite music and sing along. Find the joy in working together, and inspire your child with it. Tell him how much it means to you to have his help: "Thank you so much! We make a great team....Many hands make lighter work. And then we have more time for fun together!"

Remember that anyone will resist less if they have choices about which chores to do. And it doesn't hurt to have a little motivation waiting after the family clean-up on Saturday mornings, like a trip to the park.

Because it's easier to do it ourselves

When children are young enough to be interested in helping with housework, we shoo them away. By the time they could be helpful, it takes so much time to teach them that it's still easier to do it ourselves. Besides, by then, they're absorbed in other, more exciting pursuits, and the battle to get them to "help" feels too frustrating.

Solution: Change y o u r attitude about why children are doing

chores. It isn't to save you time, at least not initially. It's to learn life skills, and to experience how good it feels to contribute.

Expect to spend time teaching and supervising.

The younger children are when they begin doing household tasks, the better. Toddlers (like Wendy's in the quote above) usually love helping. Consciously involve your child in what you're doing from an early age, even though it takes much more time.

Make it fun for them. If you set expectations like...

"Everyone works together at our house".

"We always clean up our own messes...come on, I'll help you." ...then children begin to see themselves as contributing something of value. That's a basic human need, and children enjoy that feeling as much as adults do.

If your children are older, do you still need to work with them? Yes, if you want them to enjoy chores and learn how to do them well! Rather than assigning chores, try working as a team.

Have each child participate in a project while you work with them. Your job is solely to be the coordinator, troubleshoot any problems that come up, and keep things fun and on track. For instance, maybe your 12-yearold makes eggs for breakfast while your ten-year-old makes the toast. Yes, that is actually realistic, but you'll need to be there as the assistant to help everything go smoothly. There's no reason your children can't enjoy making meals for the family by the time they're teens, so that everyone in the family cooks once a week — but it takes your involvement over time to get to that point.

Because children "need" us to help them

Children do need babying from time to time.

It reassures them that we're there to protect and nurture them. Besides, they have to

work hard to keep it together at school all day, and they need plenty of opportunities at home to relax their executive selves and let their baby-selves come out. If they don't get those opportunities, you can be sure the baby-self will surface as soon as you ask your child to help out, or even to put on his own shoes.

Solution: Don't be afraid to "baby" your child when he asks you for help, and make sure he gets plenty of other opportunities to be silly and "off duty," including spending special time together.

Then, once you're sure that he's getting his need to feel "cared for" met, when he asks for help with a task you know he can do, stay with him, offering encouragement but letting him handle it. If you keep your sense of humour along with your expectation that your child actually can make his own peanut butter sandwich, he'll be astonished to find that he really can do it himself, and his confidence to try new tasks will grow.

Because children don't have time

Our culture's way of training young people to participate in society is school. They spend hours in class, and then more hours doing homework. If they participate in sports, music, or other activities, they're required to spend a tremendous amount of time practising. By the time they're in middle school, they often have no time to play.

Solution: During the school year, give your child responsibilities that can be handled in an hour on the weekend. Then, as summer begins, have a discussion about responsibility and work out a schedule that asks more of your child. Take the opportunity while school is not in session to teach life skills and have your child make a real contribution to the household.

Because children don't complete tasks thoroughly

You can't really expect your child to do a job as well as you would. You probably weren't so thorough at his age, either.

Solution: Teach. When you teach your child the task, be sure to break it down into smaller steps and help your child master each one. Take photos of them doing it, even once your child can read, and make a small poster with each step.

Cede control: Once your child takes responsibility for a task, try to minimise your control over that task. If he knows you're going to do it over, why should he bother trying?

Focus on the positive, so your child WANTS to do an even better job. Think about how you respond if someone criticises the way you do a task at work, compared to when they find the positive in what you've done. So if your son's dresser drawers are a shambles, at least appreciate that he's putting away his own clothes. If your daughter takes forever to finish the dishes because she chats on the phone the whole time, consider that it's really up to her how she makes the job palatable. And if there

are streaks in the bathroom mirror, use them as a reminder that you didn't have to clean the bathroom this week!

Because children "forget" their responsibilities or complain bitterly, and we give up

Children have a lot on their minds, from the upcoming soccer game to whether their sister got a bigger piece of pie.

You can expect to have to remind children of their responsibilities.

And you can expect them to complain a bit.

Solution: Don't give up, and don't get exasperated. Chores will never be first on your child's list, and that's okay. Keep your sense of humour. Then, when your child complains about helping around the house, or needs reminding, empathise and restate your expectation: "I know, wouldn't it be great if the dishes washed themselves?...

Come on, let's go..."

Post a written routine that includes the responsibilities that everyone has signed up for, and then be consistent and cheerful about your expectations. That's the only way to create a habit, and what you want is a habit so your child does it automatically.

After all, they don't have a lot of incentive to put their plates in the dishwasher, so the only reason to do it in the beginning is that you'll be in their face (in a nice way) reminding them until they do it. After a while, it will simply be a habit – this is what we do after a meal – and most of the time, you won't have to remind them.

Remember that reminding doesn't mean nagging. Which category your reminders fall into might depend on your tone of voice. Experiment with being silly and even ridiculous when you have to remind your child about a task until everyone is laughing. The anxiety will disappear, and any power struggle will disappear. In fact, your disappointment about having to remind your children will disappear. And once there's lightness and fun about it, you might even find that your child no longer needs prompting.

Like the rest of us, when children know that doing something will consistently get them a smile, hug, or warm thank you, they're more likely to do it.

By contrast, if we think they should do it without reminders, we get irritable and the whole interaction is fraught with tension. Not surprisingly, they're more likely to shy away from even thinking about that chore, which is loaded with a layer of unpleasant associations.

Yes, it will take more effort to get your child to put his own clothes in the hamper than to do it yourself. But the repeated effort is worth it, because over time those tasks will become a habit, like brushing his teeth. Children really do rise to meet our expectations, as long as we stay connected so they want to please us. And one day he WILL serve you a meal he's made, and you'll realise you've raised a young person who can take care of himself and others, who makes a real contribution.

he Guyana Police Force (GPF) is expected to undergo some major shake-ups in 2019 aimed at enhancing the performance of the country’s premier law enforcement agency so as to better serve citizens.

According to newly appointed Police Commissioner Leslie James, a reformed Police Force can be expected in the first quarter of 2019 as they work on implementing a series of recommendations that were made as part of the United Kingdom (UK)-funded

Security Sector Reform Project (SSRP).

“The Guyana Police is at a very important juncture where we are, in a deliberate way, rolling out a plan which flowed from recommendations and by March 2019, it is expected that there will be a much-reformed Guyana Police Force,” he stated.

Without going into detail about the reforms, the Top Cop on Thursday told reporters at his first media conference since becoming Commissioner, that some of the broad areas

the Force will be focusing on going forward includes human resources management, training and infrastructure.

The latter, James noted, will see several Police stations being remodelled and modernised.

“Those stations are outfitted with modern type units dealing with the one-way mirror, units to deal with forensic-type interviews, domestic violence among others. This is expected to have a better interaction with members by the Policemen and women who

Mayor to present herself for questioning today …as Commissioner examines poorly stored historical records

ecades old historical records at City Hall and the City Constabulary Training Complex were inspected by retired Justice Cecil Kennard on Thursday, who requested to see the condition of the books and the information that was kept in the archives.

A visit to City Hall was first on the agenda on Thursday as the Commissioner took a closer look at the fragile documents in the company of the legal assistant, Sherwin Benjamin and the acting Town Clerk, Sharon HarryMunroe.

Some of the papers which were seen by Guyana Times were aged and it was difficult in some situations to detect what was inscribed. The area where the records were stored was poorly kept and in some instances, in a deteriorated state. Most of these records were stored in an infested, water-logged room and were poorly kept.

This impromptu call to examine the archives stemmed from Wednesday’s public hearing where the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) was told that the centre, which is located on Water Street, Georgetown,

was broken into by employees at City Hall on August 14.

During that incident, the locks on the doors were broken and the two individuals proceeded to uplift “three thick books” from the building.

According to the Chief Constable Andrew Foo, the women acted on Town Clerk Royston King’s instructions, since he is the sole custodial for the Council’s assets.

Harry-Munroe stated in the report that was filed that the books were taken for the 175TH City Week Celebrations. She, however, denied that the keys to the room is stored at the Town Clerk office and claimed that the City Constabulary is the holder of these keys.

This raised the question as to whether it was a criminal act, since officials of the Constabulary were not notified of their actions to take these records.

As the inquiry unfolds, Mayor Patricia Chase Green is expected to submit her witness statement today, given the fact that she was subpoenaed. Failure to appear without a reason is deemed an offence and the necessary actions will be taken by the Commission and moreover, the Local Government Commission (LGC).

So far, almost every senior official at the Council has presented their evidence along with retired employees and contractors who has issues of nonpayment with the Council.

Passenger boat goes up in flames in Berbice River

A

25-seat passenger boat went up in flames at the New Amsterdam Market Wharf, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) on Thursday, shortly before passengers were boarded for the four-hour long trip to Sand Hills.

Reports are at about 16:00h on Thursday, the captain of the vessel and one crew member were aboard and about the commence loading passengers and cargo when the incident occurred.

Guyana Times was told that the captain powered on the engine and the battery sparked, igniting the few drops of gasoline that were left on the battery from 'fueling up' moments before. This led to an explosion, forcing onlookers to cut the boat loose to avoid damage to the wharf and other boats which were also moored at the wharf.

Both the captain and the sailor reportedly plunged overboard and swam to shore.

The Coast Guard responded and pulled the burning boat to shore.

sions and the response time to crime reports. These, he added however, will be addressed as part of the Force’s reform.

The Police Commission went on to note that all the policing divisions are outfitted with an Operations Room and if persons do not get a favourable response from their community stations or outposts, then they should contact this unit which is at all times equipped with officers as well as vehicles.

Moreover, as the Force moves forward with its reform, plans are also afoot to enhance its marine capacity. In fact, only Wednesday a meeting was held with a stakeholder who made a presentation on boosting the Force’s marine capability.

In addition, the Force is also looking to establish an aviation wing. “This is very important because if this country is a serious investment destination, it means that we have to engage in best practices, which includes aviation capability,” the Top Cop told reporters.

On the issue of weeding out corruption within the Police Force, James asserted that this plague must be a “thing of the past” and as such, they have been encouraging senior officers, especially Divisional Commanders, to engage ranks and remind them of their professionalism so as to keep them on track.

However, the Top Cop pointed out that corruption, especially bribery at roadblocks, is an individual decision which is being encouraged

by members of the public who make the offer first.

“Corruption is a decision made by an individual, it’s not for the want of training ranks would get involved in corruption; it’s a [personal] decision…

[But I want to say] without an offer, there can’t be an acceptance… We don’t hear reports of Policemen going into anybody’s pockets which is highly suggestive that when the rank might have list the charges to the offender, they themselves might have put things to the Police, who unprofessionally would engage in corruption.

So it’s not that corruption will be wished away, we’re fully aware of it and it will be minimised because we are addressing it in a deliberate manner,” the Police Commissioner stated, while adding that since assuming his post in August, he has not had any reports of corruption at road blocks before him.

In ensure that these reforms are being implemented, Commissioner James is currently on a tour of the various policing divisions where he is sensitising ranks as well as the public on the new path the Force is aheading on.

Visits were already made in A (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara), B (Berbice), C (East Coast Demerara), D (West Demerara-East Bank Essequibo) and E Divisions (Linden-Kwakwani), while the new Top Cop along with a team of senior officers will soon be visiting F (Bartica-Interior locations) and G (Essequibo Coasts-Islands).

Duo charged for botched Bourda Market heist on bail

wo of the three alleged bandits who were arrested following a botched robbery committed on a Bourda Market vendor were on Thursday released on bail on an attempted robbery charge.

Kester Auther, 34, of Lot 52 Nelson Street, Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and Rondel Cummings, 23, of Pike Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, denied that on October 25, 2018 they attempted to rob Bourda Market vendor Jullian McCalmont.

The third suspect, Shane Allison, 21, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD),

could not make an appearance since he was shot during the course of the robbery and was currently a patient at a city hospital nursing gunshot wounds to his hip and left foot.

On Thursday, the duo stood before Magistrate Dylon Bess and were granted their pre-trial liberty in the sum of $75,000 each. As a condition for bail, the men are required to report to the Alberttown Police Station on a weekly basis until the trial is completed.

The case will continue on December 6, 2018.

Reports surrounding the botched robbery stated that

on October 25, 2018 about 02:00h between Bourda and Alexander Streets, Georgetown, the three men disembarked a minibus and pounced on the victim.

According to eyewitnesses, one of the bandits, who was reportedly identified as Allison, brandished a handgun while demanding that the vendor hand over his valuables.

However, McCalmont, an armed security guard who was a short distance away, saw the fracas and confronted the gun-toting bandit. Allison reportedly turned the weapon and pointed it at the guard, who discharged his weapon

several times at the gunman.

He subsequently collapsed a short distance away. An unlicensed .32 pistol with six live matching rounds was found next to the injured suspect.

Further, a swift response from ranks of the City Constabulary Bourda Outpost assisted in the injured Allison being apprehended and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted under guard.

Meanwhile, the other two suspects were also apprehended a short distance away from the scene and handed over to Police at the Alberttown Police Station.

Conspiracy to traffic drugs

hree immigration officers and a security guard were on Wednesday freed from a conspiracy to traffic drugs charge.

The four were charged fol-

lowing the discovery in 2016 of $1.3 million worth of cocaine on a Dynamic Airways flight, which left Georgetown for JFK International Airport.

Immigration officers Oral David, 31; Orin Parris, 26;

Raduskie Wright, 26; and security guard Diane Jackson, 33, were on trial before Magistrate Leron Daly for the offence.

The Magistrate on Wednesday ruled that the

prosecution failed to prove its case, as there was a lack of evidence to substantiate the charge. As such, the Magistrate dismissed the case against the defendants. turn to page 9

He used to be with ACDA but they dumped him for being too “radical”. He just penned a letter to the press which illustrates why we’ll never get out of the political morass that has stymied our development for the last 60 years.

In suggesting that Ramjattan ought to be also looking to reduce the source of crime – which Ogunseye pins on “poverty” – he took the opportunity to invoke the post 1998 crime wave.

But oh, what a one-eyed view it was!! Ogunseye gnashed his teeth about the activities of the “phantom squad”: “As a result of the PPP/C regime covenant with known drug lords, the nation witnessed for the first time in its history, the emergence of an unprecedented rise in State-sponsored executions that led to the birth of the so-called phantom killers and the criminalisation of the State.”

But even granting all of this, why didn’t Ogunseye not even ONCE mention what brought on those “killer squads”. Did they arise full blown (and grown) from the brow of Zeus?? Not once did he also mention the five “Mash Day Escapees”, who might have arose fullblown from the brow of Ogun, the Yoruba God of War!!

They promptly set up camp in the heart of Buxton and declared war on the state of Guyana. Was it because they specifically declared themselves – on a tape shown on national TV – as were Freedom Fighters on behalf of African Guyanese?

Ogunseye says that crime wave “had a negative impact on the political, economic and social situation in the country. The end results were overcrowded jails that up to today are populated with young men, most of whom were born and brought up under the PPP/C regime.” So the PPP’s responsible for the Freedom Fighters, recruiting hundreds of young men to act as lookouts in Buxton or training them for the “freedom fight” in the backlands of Buxton??

Then there were the drug-laced orgies held at the “line top” in Buxton where young girls were routinely raped. Does Ogunseye think respect for women were inculcated in those parties. And the killings? It wasn’t only Policemen who were killed… what about the maraudings in the neighbouring villages where innocent Indians were butchered??

And as to why the Phantoms weren’t “taken out” in Guyana…Could it be because their confessed leader Roger Khan, identified by Ogunseye, took out a full-page ad in the press boasting about his links to the then CoP? Who was rewarded by being made a Minister in this Government!!

…and whistling in the dark

The AFC second tier leaders were ebullient after the High Court rejected the PPP’s case challenging some of their candidates at the LGE! One report said they were in “high spirits” – which is the default status of their leaders Nagamootoo and Ramjattan – excepting that their “spirits” usually come in a bottle!! Is it catching?!

Now nothing’s wrong with being optimistic – but these young’uns had to be whistling in the dark. Even THEY couldn’t have missed the fact that the best “crowd” they were able to muster at their meetings was 10 in Kitty!!

But unfortunately, they really set themselves up for a great fall when they boasted that “AFC votes can’t be forged on Election Day”!! Your Eyewitness agrees specifically on this specific claim because their PNC partner – which does the rigging – has put them out to pasture!! But because they’re on their own, your Eyewitness predicts THE AFC WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ELECT A SINGLE COUNCILLOR ACROSS GUYANA!!

After all, there’s nothing you can do with dead meat, save throwing it into the garbage!!

Small businesses will be forced to shut down – Jagdeo …says Govt should protect local rather than international content

F

ollowing the announcement by Government of its intention to table copyright legislation, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has expressed worry over the impact this could have on the local economy as many small businesses could possibly close as a result of the incoming change.

He made these comments at his Church Street, Georgetown office on Thursday when he engaged the media at his weekly press conference.

Guyanese artistes and writers have been lobbying for several years to protect their products from being

copied and mass produced without their permission as many local producers cannot get royalties and earnings from their intellectual property. It was in a parliamentary address last week that President David Granger stated that legislation would be tabled to bring copyright laws on the books, However, some opposed to the change say it could put undue burdens on local producers of DVDs and CDs and that it would drastically impact on the free foreign movies and programmes currently broadcast on television.

Protect local vs foreign

Jagdeo weighed in on the issue on Thursday, highlighting the economic impact this overhaul could have on local businesses.

“I hope that people will understand … it will be a revolution in Guyana. I’m not going to say much more, because when Government passes that next year, every video store in this country will have to close that sells these bootlegs. And every store that sells music now … the way they currently do, it will have to shut those down too, as well as the guys who are doing the push cart, they can be charged too,” Jagdeo

Police records increase in rape, robbery cases

T

he Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded an increase in the number of rape and robberies cases thus far this year when compared to the corresponding period last year.

During his first press conference since assuming office back in August, Police Commissioner Leslie James on Thursday provided an update on statistics so far in 2018, ending October 22, 2018, in comparison to the same period in 2017.

The Top Cop noted that while the GPF recorded a declining trend in most categories of serious crimes during this time, there were a few which increased.

This included robberies which saw an increase of eight per cent with 40 cases reported this year, compared to 37 during the corresponding period in 2017.

There was also a growth in robberies with violence, which saw 122 cases during this period compared to 120 last year – reflecting a two per cent increase.

Additionally, the number of rape cases also increased

by seven p e r cent with 202 cases reported this year compared to 189 cases last year.

Meanwhile, the other categories of serious crimes that recorded reductions were murder, which went down by 17 per cent, with 80 cases this year compared to 96 last year; gun robberies reduced by seven per cent, with 486 cases against 525; armed robberies using other instruments reduced by 24 per cent with 185 cases against 243; robbery with aggravation went down by 36 per cent with 42 cases against 66; larceny from the person reduced by 12 per cent with 97 cases against

110; burglary reduced by nine per cent with 156 cases against 172; and break and enter and larceny went down by 12 per cent with 756 cases last year against 859 reported last year.

Commissioner James made it a point to emphasise the statistics are reflective of only cases that were reported to the Police Force.

With regards to the seizure of firearms, it was revealed that a total of 112 illegal weapons were taken off the streets as of October 22, 2018. These weapons included pistols, revolvers, shotguns and sub-machine guns. The highest number of gun finds was in A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara).

Crime Chief Lyndon Alves told reporters at Thursday’s press conference that they were unavailable to trace any of these illegal weapons to crime previously committed.

Furthermore, in efforts to combat narcotics trafficking, the Guyana Police Force has seized a total of 395,617.32 kilograms of cannabis and 2318 kilograms of cocaine. turn to page 14

While acknowledging that some may be in disagreement with the position he posited, Jagdeo clarified that Government should place more emphasis on protecting local intellectual property rights rather than focusing on safeguarding international content.

“In many parts, people don’t protect our paper, our material, so we [should] pro-

tect the copyrighted material for our local artistes, etc, and we have those enforced and removed from the shelves; and then wait until the appropriate time, because we are a poor developing country, wait until such time in the future that people can afford to pay,” the Opposition Leader suggested.

The ruling A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance

For Change (APNU/AFC) Administration has been signalling that it would bring the legislation for consideration in the National Assembly, over the years it has been in office. It was only in April of this year that Government restated that it would be updating and enforcing the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) legislation, which allows creators to safeguard their work through patents, trademarks and copyrights, resulting in prevention of plagiarism, with the relevant laws as artillery should the need arise.

There are currently small fines for copyright infringements under old laws. In fact, Guyana’s Trademark Act and Patents and Design Act were tabled in 1973, while the Copyright Act is dated 1956, decades before interconnectivity and digitisation became basic in the lives of many Guyanese in coastal and some hinterland areas.

In contrast, in Guyana’s regional neighbour Barbados, the court could award up to US$250,000 for copyright infringement.

Is the local University adequately serving Guyana?

T

he University of Guyana (UG) can do so much more for the nation after being in existence for more than 50 years. The evidence is not yet there to prove that the resources are adequately focused to achieve the desired outcome.

UG, my Alma Mata, was established in 1963 with some 164 students. After 55 years, the student population has not reached 8000 according to the university’s website. That is just pathetic; it should be more like 25,000!

Nations serious about their future (as rich as Singapore and South Korea to the not so rich as Rwanda and Ghana), take serious measures to ensure their high school students in growing numbers are entering university. Over the course of a single generation, these progressive nations have created a situation where degree holders are becoming almost ubiquitous. In the case of South Korea – 70 per cent of the high school students enroll in universities. In the case of Rwanda, over a 10-year period (2007-2017), they doubled the number of students graduating from high school of which the transfer rate of those high school graduates into university increased from 11 per cent to 50 per cent.

What has happened to Guyana? We are still stuck with 12 per cent of our high school students transferring to a university, of which 90 per cent of them leave the country after graduating. Are we producing the right people for the local market?

The model used by Guyana for generations has been to work on the nursery and primary system first, with a plan to get to the secondary and university system later. The challenge with that system is that it sparingly gets to the university level. Why not reverse the model and start with the “at-risk” secondary school students? How can we get these students into the university system and into programmes designed for the local market?

Has anyone ever asked the Private Sector and Government leaders what skill sets they need most and which skill sets they are prepared to pay well? UG has for decades been “mistraining” our people. One only has to look at the composition of enrolled students in each faculty and you get a clear idea that Guyana is on a different planet when it comes to enriching its human capacity to boost its competitiveness. Unless more than half of the university enrollment is in the hard sciences and business entrepreneurship studies, we cannot innovate the future and lead the change needed.

As Guyana prepares for first oil, we need people to help us crunch those numbers and manage the technical issues with the oil majors on our behalf. But UG is not helping enough to prepare the nation for this eventuality. Are we graduating anyone in the master’s programme in environmental sciences? What about the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics? What about geological engineering and civil engineering and all the other facets of engineering; how great are those numbers? What about financial specialists?

What I am reading is shocking. The top schools alone cannot produce enough for the nation; it needs the graduates from Mahaicony Secondary, East La Penitence Secondary and other schools on the fringes in university. What the nation needs is greater academic support for those who are falling through the cracks in the high school system. Programmes that I observe in the United States such as the “Boys to Men Programme”, “Combat2College Programme”, and “The Learning Centres” are excellent models that can easily be replicated in Guyana.

Let us reflect on the “Boys to Men Programme”? In Guyana, the World Bank has discovered what we all knew from a generation ago by stating that “at the secondary level, there is male underachievement” in the system. Yet a generation after that report was written, absolutely nothing has been done to move boys into becoming educated men in a system that is rigged against them.

In the USA, you find this mentoring programme aimed at male high school students who are struggling financially, socially and academically. The entire programme has been particularly successful in Maryland at fostering these youths at risk to graduate high school. The aim is to do what is necessary for these boys to stay in school and then unleash them in a supported environment into the college system. They are mentored and partially financed into a life of greater student activism, access to work and mentored constantly into taking personal responsibilities for themselves. Why can’t UG lead on such an agenda in our public education system in a pilot system in a nearby secondary school?

CAPAM 2018 concluded, with a banquet and IIA ceremony at the Marriott Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown, on Wednesday evening. Minister Harmon commended CAPAM for celebrating innovation which explores new frontiers in the pursuit of public administration and management.

“I wish to commend the International Innovations Awards ceremony that seeks to promote the spirit of innovation of the public service by recognising organisations that have made significant contributions to improving governance and service in the Public Sector,” Minister Harmon is quoted by the Department of Public Information as saying.

This is the first time the Conference was held in Guyana. CAPAM was held from October 22-24 at the Guyana Marriott under the theme “Transforming the Public Sector for Climate Governance”. s the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) continues in its quest to upgrade small businesses, some 20 establishments will benefit from upgrades which will allow for them to be more competitive.

This is according to GCCI President Deodat Indar, who on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to enable those businesses to become standardised and compliant.

It was explained that the first batch of 20 small, medium and micro businesses will go through an

inspection phase and selected thereafter.

Indar explained, “The outcome of the project is to develop those 20 companies in the areas of standardisation, certification, as well as to enable them to have proper GMPs, or good manufacturing practices, and also assisting them with proper packaging and labelling of their goods.”

He added that this MoU was one aspect of the GCCI’s move to have small businesses compliant, as within the next few weeks, another agreement will be inked this time around with the Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department to ensure

These new initiatives for small businesses are being made possible through the partnership of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

GNBS Executive Director Candelle Walcott noted that the Bureau was happy to have collaborated with the Private Sector agency and its membership to sign the agreement, which was symbolic of a new relationship.

According to her, “We will be providing techni-

cal assistance and guidance to 20 agro-processors across Guyana to implement good manufacturing practices as well as other requirements so that these companies can become certified and also become export ready.”

She added that with these new standards, the businesses would be able to improve their competitiveness and business operations, enabling them to provide better and safe products for consumption.

Bullying in schools requires immediate attention – CPCE head

ullying in schools has become an ongoing trend in recent years and is mainly fuelled by discrimination. This calls for urgent attention by all stakeholders to tackle this matter before it escalates further.

This was the position shared by Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) Principal Viola Rowe during a reception at the British High Commissioner’s residence to commemorate Spirit Day. The event, which was hosted by Guyana’s Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD Guyana) and the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association’s Youth Advocacy Movement (GRPA’s YAM), was attended by First Lady Sandra Granger; British High Commissioner Greg Quinn; Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Lilian Chatterjee; UNAIDS Country Director Martin Oditt and other representatives.

Spirit Day is an annual LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer] awareness day observed on the third Thursday in October. It was started in 2010 by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan. It was introduced in response to a rash of widely publicised bullying-related suicides.

Giving her remarks, Rowe encouraged all stakeholders to “act now in observance of Spirit Day 2018 to make commitments to join the fight to stop bullying against LGBTQ persons and, by extension, those who are targets because of their race, ethnicity, gender, physical appearance, financial status, religious persuasion, or intellectually ability.”

She also mentioned the fact that schools have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that learners were exposed to safe learning spaces, adding that bullying must be curbed at the earliest stage.

The CPCE Principal added that bullying was a threat to public health as it has major negative effects on persons’ mental and physical health, resulting especially in depression, anxiety, distress and suicide. She assured that the CPCE was supportive of any measures which could curb bullying.

SASOD and GRPA’s YAM also took the opportunity to launch an essay writing competition for students in Grades Seven to Nine in secondary schools in Guyana.

The topic for the essays is: “There should be effective policies and redress mechanisms to curb all forms of bullying and discrimination against students and teachers in Guyana’s schools.”

Carvil Duncan freed of $27.7M fraud charge

T

rade unionist and former member of the Board of Directors of Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Incorporated, Carvil Duncan was on Thursday freed of another charge of conspiracy to defraud the company after a lengthy trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Duncan was facing a charge, which stated that on March 31, 2015 at Georgetown, he conspired with then Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of GPL, Aeshwar Deonarine to steal $27,757,547, property of the power company.

He was represented by Attorneys-at-Law Glenn Hanoman and Everton Singh-Lammy.

The ruling was handed down by Magistrate Leron Daly, who stated that the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient to substantiate the charge.

According to reports, Duncan was accused of allegedly transferring close to $28 million of the company’s funds into his personal bank account.

The revelation was made

by Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson, in 2015, who had claimed that the transactions came to light as a result of a fiscal audit of the PetroCaribe fund.

The Minister had claimed that in May and June of 2015, acting with Duncan,

Deonarine would have transferred $27.8 million to his own account which was supposed to be retroactive payments for salary increases.

However, he claimed that the Board of Directors for GPL did not approve the salary increase for Deonarine, who would have approached the Board several times for his salary to be increased to the same as another Deputy CEO of GPL.

Patterson revealed that Deonarine has been asked to proceed on administrative leave pending a full investigation.

Duncan, he had claimed, approved payment of $948,000 to his own account – this was also for retroactive salary payments.

In 2015, Patterson explained that Duncan would have been approached for an explanation into the expenditure, but could not provide a transparent one.

Meanwhile, after the charges were instituted, Duncan was threatened with removal from several constitutional posts he held at the time. He challenged the decision by Government to establish a tribunal to determine if he was fit to continue serving in his constitutional offices in light of several charges he was facing at the time.

However, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo had contended that he had dispatched a letter to Duncan’s

office informing him of the executive’s decision to establish the tribunal.

Nagamootoo had also disclosed that the letter, as required by the Constitution of Guyana, invited Duncan to show cause why the tribunal should not be set up.

Duncan subsequently testified that he never received the correspondence.

Justice Holder, in October 2016, suspended the work of the presidential tribunal following an injunction, which was filed by Attorney Anil Nandlall.

Nandlall had argued that the tribunal was an unlawful and unconstitutional course of action, since Duncan at the time was not found guilty of the charges.

However, President David Granger had suspended Duncan from several constitutional posts, which included being a member of the Judicial Service Commission and the Police Service Commission.

According to the Top Cop, a total of 291 persons have been charged with some 247 cases filed for narcotics related offences, while another 40 charged and 39 cases filed for cocaine related cases.

Traffic statistics

Meanwhile, as it relates to the traffic statistics during this period, there was a 3.9 per cent increase in fatal accidents

with 79 cases so far, resulting in a total of 92 deaths, which also went up by 3.3 per cent. This is compared to 76 fatal accidents resulting in 89 deaths recorded during the corresponding period in 2017.

Additionally, the number of children killed on the roadways doubled to four so far. Nevertheless, the Top Cop also reported decreases in serious, minor and damage accidents,

These figures amounted to a total of 1032 accidents were recorded on the country’s roadways so far this year, compared to 1513 in the corresponding period in 2017 – reflecting a 31.7 per cent decrease in accidents.

Guyanese youths share Bollywood singers to perform at Diwali concert opinions on climate change

ipalee and Samir are two Bollywood singing sensations who will be performing in Guyana at a Diwali concert this weekend titled “Rewind and Fastforward”.

Local businesses heading to Scotland to foster oil relations

ome November, a delegation from local businesses who are members of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) will be heading to the oil city of Aberdeen, Scotland in the United Kingdom in a quest to develop business relations in the area of oil and gas.

This was announced on Thursday by GCCI President Deodat Indar during a press conference held at the entity’s Waterloo Street, Georgetown head office.

The trade mission is expected to begin on November 25 and wind down on November 30. The GCCI intends to have this be the first of many visits to the UK with the same focus.

According to Indar, this remarkable initiative will help businesses to spring into other avenues to bring about growth in a feasible manner.

“If one company in Guyana had to go up there (to Scotland and) sort out a partner (and) evaluate that partner, it would take a long and hard process and it will cost that company a lot of money and these missions are there to ease out all of that and make that, to some extent, not needed,” he said.

The Head of the Private Sector organisation also noted how expectant he was of agreements being signed during that visit to bridge the gap between the countries.

GCCI Vice President Nicholas Boyer explained the importance of the trip, noting that the trade mission became a reality after the GCCI engaged the British High Commissioner and the Guyanese embassy in the UK. He went on to highlight that Aberdeen is an impacting city within the oil and gas sector in the UK. The Vice President alluded to the fact that Guyana needed to reach out to other countries who have experience in that sector if the country was to truly flourish from its earnings.

It was explained by him that the GCCI intended to have its members connected to the foreigners who were well-schooled in the area and interested in setting up partnerships through the transfer of technology and skills to promote local growth and capacity.

Boyer said, “While there, we are going to meet the oil and gas association from the UK, the Energy Industries Council, the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and some other organisations that will allow our members to get connected to their levels and once we build that bridge, it is expected that the UK-Guyana trade will grow.”

Meanwhile, British High Commissioner Greg Quinn pointed out that the city has a long history which Guyana can learn from although it, too, has made some mistakes.

According to him, “The visit has got several aspects to it and one is to allow us to connect business to business links, not just in the oil industry, but in other areas as education and such like culture. It will allow the educational industry in Aberdeen to reach out to the educational institutions here and it will allow us to build a relationship I hope between the Aberdeen Council and the City Council back here.”

Quinn also flagged the importance of the trade mission as it was the first of its kind to the UK, laying the foundation for growth in several areas.

he Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN) in Guyana on Wednesday hosted a youth perspective conference on climate change and clean energy, with the aim of getting today’s generation involved in ideas that can mitigate this ongoing issue.

The National Library was filled to capacity with representatives of CYEN in Guyana, the United Nations, local institutions and most importantly, students of several secondary schools.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Coordinator Mikiko Tanaka underscored the importance of Guyana’s natural resources to finding solutions to end climate change. One of the alarming things that were mentioned about climate change is the continuous rise in sea levels owing to melting icecaps. This is caused by increased atmospheric temperature, but industrial emissions also pose a threat.

While a majority of Guyana’s people reside on the coastland where the land is meters below sea level, global warming poses as a threat not only to the people but to rare species of animals as well.

“Climate change became a major world problem and something that requires us

all to unite together to urgently find solutions and to stop this global warming,” said Tanaka.

“By 2100, we will be another 65 centimetres below the sea. Storms around the world are worsening…” she added.

Shanomae Rose of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Guyana was also among the list of speakers, who noted that talk on environmentalism should come from concern about what is happening and protection of our surroundings against degradation.

“It is not only our concern but also our action. As youths, we need you to express your concerns, ask questions and

take actions. In today’s society, we need to be a little more bold, because in order for us to create a Guyana that will be resilient, we need more actions,” said Rose.

One of the topics that were discussed is the way forward, and sustainability is one of the directions that favoured the Earth. Another issue is the fact that the youths of today are not aware of what is happening in their communities because of the impact of social media and technology.

“The only way we can get you engaged is if you remain informed … There are many ways for our young people to get involved,” she said.

In the first half of this year, the Office of Climate Change (OCC) had pledged to continue its work to improve sustainability by executing projects, which were articulated in the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS).

The LCDS is a national strategy launched under the previous Administration in 2009 and seeks to create a low-deforestation, low-carbon, climate-resilient economy with the objective of transforming the country while combating climate change.

This is mainly through the projects to prevent deforestation and preserve forest resources.

The body of Ramdai Samnarine, 73, called “Aunty Pato”, was found floating in the canal at about 16:30h on Wednesday.

An autopsy performed on the body on Thursday by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh, gave the cause of death as blunt trauma to the head.

resident David Granger told residents of Mahdia, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) to select leaders who will direct the region’s wealth to diversify the region’s economy for the people’s benefit.

The Head of State made the call on Thursday during a meeting with residents of Mahdia and surrounding villages at the newly constructed People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) office. President Granger and a team of Government officials were in the community for the official launch of Mahdia as a township.

The resident said the region’s rich resources can eliminate poverty in the Potaro-Siparuni region.

“This region must move forward economical-

ly. Mahdia can produce any commodity – tomatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, meat – you don’t need to import anything. This region can be self-sufficient with good leadership.”

He advised residents to take a page from those who are cognisant of the region’s vast potential and have wisely invested in it.

“I want to see Mahdia take its place next to the other towns. We too need to establish businesses and aid in creating employment.

The children in Mahdia must have a bright future and equal opportunities to those on the coast,” the President is quoted as saying by the Department of Public Information.

Rose Hall dismissed sugar workers receive hampers from PPP

lose to 300 dismissed sugar workers, who were attached to the Rose Hall Sugar Estate, on Thursday received hampers from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) as the party again highlighted the devastating effect the estates’ closures have on Region Six (East BerbiceCoretyne).

The Party made donations in East Canje, and at Islington to cater for the workers from the East Bank of Berbice.

In East Canje, close to 200 hampers were distributed while about 100 were distributed at Islington.

Party Regional Supervisor Zamal Hussain said the Party was in a small way trying to assist the workers who have been jobless after they were dismissed by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) after Government took a decision to close several sugar estates across the country.

“We will continue to as-

sist the working-class people or the persons who were severed from the estates until they are able to get a job. The People’s Progressive Party is committed to ensuring that the lives of these severed workers are better on a daily basis,” Hussain told this publication, while thanking those who donated towards making the hampers possible.

In December 2017, 181 workers from the Rose Hall Estate lost their jobs when the estate closed its doors.

Most of those who were transferred to the Albion and Blairmont Estates were from the East Bank of Berbice.

Meanwhile, as the workers await the second half of their severance pay, many of the jobless workers are finding it difficult to secure employment.

This, several workers said, has forced them to utilise the first half of their severance to meet their ex-

Those monies have now been exhausted, and they are worried about how they will feed their families or send their children to school or keep the electricity on or pay their water bills. They

“They are in a very bad situation; many of them don’t have a meal for the day and we as a party, we

are doing everything possible so that we will be able to assist these workers. Some of the children are not going to school. At the regional level we have put things in place to ensure that they have transportation and the

party is working very closely with the severed workers to ensure that they can take care of their families on a daily basis,” Hussain told Guyana Times on Thursday.

A single parent who was sent home when the Rose Hall Estate closed related some of the hardships she has been experiencing.

The mother of one said it costs almost $1000 per day for her daughter to attend school. She explained that a large potation of that money goes towards printing of documents for school assignments.

Google gave top Executive $90M payoff but kept sexual misconduct claim quiet – report

oogle gave a US$90 million severance package to Andy Rubin, the creator of the Android mobile software, but concealed details of a sexual misconduct allegation that triggered his departure, the New York Times has reported.

According to unnamed sources who spoke to the Times, Google investigated and found credible claims from a female employee, who said Rubin forced her to perform oral sex in a hotel room in 2013.

Jordan floods: Schoolchildren among 18 dead after bus swept away

t least 18 people, mostly children, were killed when torrential rains swept away a bus carrying students and teachers touring near the Dead Sea, according to sources in the country's civil defence directorate. Most of the dead are reported to be schoolchildren under the age of 14. Officials said the death toll was expected rise. The official news agency Petra said 37 students, along with seven

adults, had been touring near the Dead Sea when heavy rains unleashed flash floods in the area.

Ghazi al-Zaben, Jordan's health minister, had earlier said that 11 people were also injured, adding 21 others on the school outing were rescued late on Thursday.

President Donald Trump said on Thursday he was "bringing out the military".

IMF says recovery in Latin America and the Caribbean has lost momentum

he International Monetary Fund’s Regional Economic Outlook for the Western Hemisphere has marked down its growth forecasts for Latin America and the Caribbean to 1.2 per cent in 2018 and 2.2 per cent in 2019, from the May 2018 forecasts of 2.0 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively.

It said the moderating recovery is underpinned by divergent growth outcomes across the region, and in some of the region’s largest economies, the recovery has slowed sharply, as country-specific characteristics amplify the impact of growing trade tensions and tightening monetary conditions.

Moreover, higher global oil prices coupled with increased political uncertainty have dampened the nearterm outlook in several economies in Central America.

There are bright spots to the outlook, however.

Activity is recovering in the Caribbean, reflecting the uptick in tourism owing to robust US growth.

Sahle-Work Zewde becomes Ethiopia's first female President

thiopian Members of Parliament have elected Sahle-Work Zewde as the country's first female President.

Sahle-Work is an experienced diplomat who has now become Africa's only female Head of State. Her election to the ceremonial position comes a week after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed a Cabinet with half the posts taken up by women.

After being sworn in, President SahleWork promised to work hard to make gender equality a reality in Ethiopia.

Addressing parliament, she also pledged to promote peace: "I urge you all, to uphold our peace, in the name of a mother, who is the first to suffer from the absence of peace.''

President Sahle-Work has served as an Ambassador for Ethiopia in Senegal and Djibouti. Immediately before becoming President, Sahle-Work was the UN representative at the African Union.

Clinton Pestano bowled the new ball with variation and control as he removed the out of form Chadwick Walton in his second over, with the score on 10. GHB selects U-19 team 2 years ahead of competition

I

n anticipation of the 2020 Junior Pan American Championships, the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has wasted no time in selecting the Under-19 boys’ team for the tournament.

With two years under their belt for preparations, the 40 players selected will be trained under the tutelage of a team of experienced Coaches, who include current and former senior national players Dwayne Scott, Anthony Cole, Dwight Sullivan, Robert France, Christopher Low-Koon and Robert Fernandes. Physical trainer Barrington Browne will be in charge of the squad’s physical conditioning, while other resource personnel will address the sports psychology aspect of preparations.

Starting with next week’s GTT Senior National Indoor Championships, the squad will be competing in all local tournaments against their senior club counterparts to develop the team chemistry and unity that will be needed in the international arena.

The GHB is also hoping to send the team on two warmup tours to Trinidad and Tobago to expose the players

to artificial turf prior to the 2020 championships. The squad will be spearheaded by senior national players Kareem McKenzie and Meshach Sargeant, as well as Michael Hing and Omar Hopkinson, who were all part of Guyana’s last junior team that competed at the quadrennial tournament in 2016.

The emergence of new talents like Samuel Woodroffe, Warren Williams, Paul D’ Andrade, Nickel Ashby, the Garnett brothers, along with a number of other players, has generated a level of excitement about the potential of the 2020 team.

National Head Coach Robert Fernandes stated, “In the recently-concluded Indoor Junior National Championships, these players produced such a high level of quality, entertaining hockey that it drew crowds that were on par or even larger than some of our senior tournaments. I’ve never worked with a squad that has this much talent and depth. From one to forty, each of these players has a real shot of making the 2020 team and that level of competition for places will ensure that the

final 18 will be of the highest calibre.”

n Wednesday night’s encounter at the Burnham Hard Court on Carmichael Street in the 2018 Rainforest Water/Malta Supreme/ Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) League, many were able to witness another Sonics tragedy as they bowed out to the UG Trojans 111-30.

In the Under-23 match, UG Trojans pummelled the out-of-form Pepsi Sonics as they became the first team in the tournament to pass 100 points.

The Trojan side looked poised and ready for action as they were hungry for more victories, but that could not be said about the Sonics as things haven’t been going their way this season. With a string of losses to their name, more woes continued to hit the Sonics, as they were without the services of two of their key players – one serving a one-game suspension and the other out with an injury.

As per norm, the Sonics played in a lacklustre manner, failing to convert opportunities into baskets and having one too many passes stolen from them. The Sonics were not able to take the lead in any of the quarters as all thanks to the efforts of Jabari Joseph, who had 24 points while Kadeem Peterkin and Damani Thomas had 19 points each.

Shiv "Tiger" Chanderpaul receives doctorate

hivnarine Chanderpaul, the second most prolific Test cricketer in Windies history, has been is awarded with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of the West Indies’ (UWI) St Augustine campus.

The 43-year-old batsman was bestowed with the Honorary Doctor of Laws during the campus graduation ceremony on Thursday.

During a Test career that spanned two decades (19942015), Chanderpaul played a record 164 Tests for the Windies scoring 11,867 runs at an average of 51.37. During that time he scored 30 Test centuries and 66 fifties and was a stabilizing force in the Windies middle order.

He was also prolific in ODIs, amassing 8,778 runs at an average of 41.60 in 268 matches during which he scored 11 centuries and 59 half-centuries.

Chanderpaul announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2016. He was 41 years old and had not played for the Windies since May of the previous year.

Windies selectors said he was not considered for selection following a poor run of form during which he averaged 15.33. This prompted Windies great Brian Lara to express his disappointment at the way in which Chanderpaul was dropped.

In 1999 in East London, South Africa, Chanderpaul made his highest One Day International score when he opened the batting and scored 150 during a splendid partnership with Carl Hooper.

It was the only One-Day match of that series that West Indies won.

He score a hundred in a Test record 4th innings score of 418 to win the final Test against Australia in 2003, and avoid a series whitewash. Despite his reputation as a dogged Test batsman he has also made the fourth fastest century in Test cricket, reaching three figures in just 67 balls at Bourda, Guyana, also in the 2003 series against

In 2004, at Bourda, the oneday game against England had been reduced to 30 overs per side with West Indies batting first and Chanderpaul opening.

It was painful to watch as he took 34 balls to reach double figures and 50 deliveries to get to 14. The spectators, of course, were unhappy, to say the least. From the next 46 deliveries he made a further 70, in a remarkable and sudden change of gear. West Indies lost a close game, but only a special, single-minded batsman could have had the confidence to come up with such a gameplan and to see it through.

He was named captain of West Indies in the first Test versus South Africa in March 2005 in Guyana, after seven senior players including captain Brian Lara were dropped in a sponsorship row. He scored 200* and was retained as captain for the rest of the series even though Lara returned in the second Test.

In April 2006, Chanderpaul resigned as West Indies captain to concentrate on his batting.

In 14 Tests he won 1 and lost

10, with 3 draws. In 16 One Day Internationals he won 2 and lost 14. The captaincy was immediately restored to Brian Lara.

The year 2008 was special for Chandepaul, when he was named the International Cricket Council’s Cricketer of the Year, winning the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy. He was also named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2008. In July 2008 President Jagdeo of Guyana appointed Chanderpaul as a member of the Order of Service of Guyana and awarded him the Golden Arrow of Achievement.

This was for “his consistently outstanding performance as a cricketer, especially as a batsman, at the national, regional and international levels.”

It was not, however, all fun for him in 2008. In the Test against Australia at Sabina Park in Jamaica, he was felled by a bouncer during a fiery spell by Brett Lee, with his score on 86.

Though he lost control of his arms and legs momentarily he stood back up, waved off the paramedics, took guard again and went on to score one of cricket’s most courageous centuries (see photo). In true Chanderpaul style, he later said “The team would have been in trouble if I had left the field

wo staff members of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) are participating in a FIFA Connect workshop being held in Bridgetown, Barbados from October 25- 26.

Competitions Director Ian Alves and Coaching Education Officer Lyndon France are representing the GFF in the seminar, which seeks “to explain the FIFA Connect programme to the invited FIFA Member Associations and allow them to participate in the testing and training on the FIFA Connect Platform registration system.”

The FIFA Connect Programme is a virtual database, which helps every Member Association register all their stakeholders in a systematic way including players, Coaches and referees wherever they are in the world.

In March 2009, when Chanderpaul was ranked as the world’s leading Test batsman, he was welcomed back to Guyana by thousands as his motorcade made its way from the airport into Georgetown.

He was awarded Guyana’s third highest National Award (Cacique Crown of Honour) for achieving excellence and International standing in the field of Sports. He also received a plot of land from a private developer. A section of New Garden Street running along the Bourda cricket ground was renamed Shiv Chanderpaul Drive in his honour. In early 2011 the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) dropped Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle from the one-

day team to play Pakistan in the West Indies and Chanderpaul was asked to retire from OneDay Internationals. He stated shortly after that the new WICB coach’s methods were detrimental to his batting.

Chanderpaul also demanded an explanation from WICB Chief Executive Ernest Hilaire for comments he (Hilaire) made about the lack of discipline and application in the West Indies team during the recent series in the Indian sub-continent. He later found himself before the WICB because of this.

On 06 July 2011, in the 3rd Test against India in Dominica, he became the most-capped West Indies player, playing in his 133rd Test match. In this match he, as he did so often before, rescued the West Indies yet again with a century in the second innings – his 23rd Test century overall. The Prime Minister of Dominica, who was attending the match, conferred honorary Dominica citizenship on Chanderpaul on the 5th day of the match, as his broad bat

kept the Indian bowlers at bay.

Professional cricket Chanderpaul represented Durham, Lancashire and Warwickshire, starting from 2007, replacing regular overseas players who were unavailable because of national commitments. He also represented Khulna Royal Bengals in the Bangladesh Premier League, and Uva Next in the Sri Lanka Premier League and enjoyed considerable success in both.

Other Chanderpaul is also known for using a bail to mark his guard, his open crablike stance when batting, wearing black anti-glare stripes when batting and kissing the pitch whenever he gets a century. He represented Durham for the second half of the 2007 English county season and Lancashire in 2010. In 2011 he agreed to represent Warwickshire in the English County championship.

Turbo Knockout tournament to kick off November 5

he second instalment of the Turbo Knockout football tournament is on the horizon as 16 teams are already lined up for battle.

The participating teams are expected to produce a scintillating tournament as they try to snatch the championship from reigning champions Camptown Football Club.

The competition will take on a straight knockout format, with teams being eliminated as soon as they lose an encounter.

Coordinating the highlyanticipated tournament is the Petra Organisation, whose Co-Director, Troy Mendonca expressed his heartfelt gratitude to sponsor Guyana Beverage Inc under its Turbo brand.

“I just once again want to commend the Guyana Beverage Company, because it gives an opportunity to the teams that are not participating in the ELITE LEAGUE to display their skills,” Mendonca said. He went on to elaborate on the reason why such tournaments were important, noting that they directly contributed to the sport’s development.

“Only recently, we had

another tournament of such nature completed and we were happy to see that two youngsters – one from Camptown, one from Northern Rangers are now representing Guyana at the Under-20 level.

I said that to highlight how important it is to have teams not in the Elite League playing football and this tournament will certainly fill that void,” Mendonca explained.

Speaking on behalf of the corporate entity, Commercial Manager Samuel Arjoon highlighted the need for competitive tournaments as they better the skill of the amateur players. He also went on to commend the Petra Organisation for its work.

“We have a proud record of standing behind sports development in Guyana. For example, we’ve been behind one club for 30 years and in terms of the sport fraternity, we’re always there. And this is so, because we believe in the development of our young Guyanese talent, and we see that if they play more competitive football, that helps in their development of the sport and themselves,” Arjoon stated.

The tournament, which will begin on November 5 and is scheduled to end on December 2, will feature amateur clubs and Under-20 teams from the Elite League clubs as outlined

“Twelve of the teams will be teams that are not participating in the Elite League which will be Grove Hi Tech; Mahaica Determinators; Northern Rangers; Georgetown Football Club (GFC); Camptown; Buxton Stars; Police; Pouderoyen; Pele Santos Beacons and Riddim Squad,” Mendonca disclosed.

Furthermore, the four Under-20 teams being featured are Western Tigers, Fruta Conquerors, Den Amstel and Buxton United FC. The teams will be competing for a massive grand prize, along with trophies and prizes for outstanding individual performances. This year’s champion will walk away with $800,000 while second place will receive $400,000. The third and fourth-place finishers will be rewarded with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. All matches will be played at the Ministry of Education Ground, Carifesta Avenue.

eteran racer and multiple Group Four champion Mark Maloney will spearhead the Barbadian team for the upcoming Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) “Ignite” meet, which is geared for November 10- 11.

Maloney, who sits at the helm of a Mazda RX3, is expected to come all out to try and retain his Group Four title.

Having secured one win in Barbados, Maloney is eager to take the battle to the Guyanese duo of Mark Vieira and Andrew King, both of whom secured wins in round three earlier this year.

Mark Thompson is no stranger to the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) top step, having held the championship for two years at the Group Two level in his Honda Civic.

Daigaku, which was held in Barbados from August 16-19, 2018, where he copped second place in the individual Male 40-49 category and also second place in the male 40-49 team fighting, securing silver medals.

Master Beaton said that karate has impacted his life in a huge way. He said that it has played an important role in his career as a policeman: it taught him discipline and also provided him with skills in unarmed defence and combat, using lesser force.

His goal is to give back to his own and vulnerable groups (women and children) by teaching the basic skills of self-defence.

Dwayne Bravo retires from international cricket

est Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo has called time on his international career. He will however continue to play franchise T20 cricket across the world.

The 35-year-old made his debut in 2004, and played 40 Tests, 164 ODIs and 66 T20Is, although his last international appearance was more than two years ago, in a T20I against Pakistan in September 2016.

In a statement released to the media, Bravo said, “Today I want to confirm to the cricket world that I have officially retired from international cricket in all formats of the game. After 14 years when I made my debut for the West Indies, I still remember that moment I received the maroon cap before walking onto the Lords Cricket Ground against England in July 2004. The enthusiasm and passion I felt then, I have kept with me throughout my career.

“However, I must accept that for me to preserve my longevity as a professional cricketer, I must do as others before have done, leave the international arena for the next generation of players.”

Bravo played his last Test in 2010, and had gradually transformed into a T20 specialist in the past few years. The combination of his big-hitting

ability, athletic fielding, and canny bowling with an assortment of slower balls and change-ups made him a much sough-after figure in T20 cricket the world over.

His last ODI was in 2014, the fourth match of the dramatic series against India in Dharamsala, after which the West Indies flew home in protest against their board, cutting the tour short. Bravo was the captain of the ODI side then, and at the toss, the full squad stood behind him, symbolically backing his decision.

With his announcement, Bravo has drawn a line under any potential international comeback.

As recently as before West Indies’ ongoing tour of India, there had been talk of Bravo, among others, possibly making it to the national team.

He ends with 2200 runs at an average of 31.42 in Tests, with three centuries, to go with 86 wickets at 39.83. In ODIs, he made 2968 runs at 25.36, with a strike-rate of 82.30, while taking 199 wickets at 29.51 with an economy rate of 5.41.

Recently, the electronics giant handed over a quantity of footballs to tournament coordinator Lennox Arthur at its head office, during a simple ceremony that had in attendance a few staffers.

he badminton courts at Marian Academy came alive on Tuesday as the institution staged its annual inter-house team championships. The team set-up featured boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles, with each

house playing to acquire more individual wins than the others to take the overall game.

The school’s four houses – Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Coromoto and Our Lady of Guadeloupe, took to the courts on Tuesday

to entertain their peers and earn themselves some much-needed points which will go a long way to securing the championships.

In the first round of the group play-offs, Fatima House were pitted against Guadeloupe House and went on to defeat them 3-2.

Meanwhile, Coromoto House faced off with Lourdes House in an encounter which Coromoto won 5-0.

In the first team game, Fatima’s Randy Hamilton won the boys’ singles against Guadeloupe’s DeAndre Springer 219; however, Fatima’s Nia Allen lost to Jayde DaSilva 8-21 in the girls’ singles.

Fatima won the boys’ doubles as Jaden Totaram and Grame Carpenter defeated Alexander Ally and DeAndre Springer 21-7. Fatima also took the girls’ doubles when Kelliann Sauers and Nia Allen overcame Gabryel Fiedtkou and Tashauna

McGarrell 21-7. However, Guadeloupe regrouped to take the mixed doubles when Randy Hamilton and Kelliann Sauers lost to DeAndre Springer and Jayde DaSilva 9-2.

The following group match saw Coromoto and Lourdes Houses in a one-sided contest. The boys’ singles was taken by Coromoto’s Matthew Beharry when he defeated Zachary Persaud 21-10. defeating Roland Hamilton and Zachary Persaud 21-11 in another win for Coromoto.

In similar fashion, their female counterparts won the girls’ doubles after Ashley Escarraga and Jada Mohan got past Ella Sahai and IsaBella Ramjohn 21-13.

Coromoto eventually sealed their 5-0 win when they secured a victory in the mixed doubles.

There, Vikash Mootoo and Reba Ramlall defeated Lucas Persaud and Ella Sahai 21-8.

The inter-house tournament will continue next Tuesday, October 30 at the school’s courts (auditorium) from 15:00h.

ExxonMobil rewards Charlestown Secondary for championship performance

ExxonMobil Public and Government Affairs Manager Deedra Moe officially hands over the sporting gear to the team captain

onths after their championship run in the ExxonMobil Under-14 football league, the female Charlestown football team were honoured on Thursday for their outstanding performance.

The entire Charlestown Secondary student body turned out in the school’s auditorium to receive the ExxonMobil representatives and celebrate their champions.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony was the organiser Petra CoDirector Troy Mendonca.

He explained the purpose

of the visit to the institution, stating: “I think these girls did very well as representatives of the school and today we want to officially hand over the choice project of the school. They would have won $300,000 for a project identifiable by the school and they chose to purchase gears so that the girls and the boys can be better equipped.”

Mendonca went on to share a piece of advice with the winning team and furthermore the school, encouraging the students to become leaders in whatever they do.

New Amsterdam Town Day football…

Tucburg start strong A

ction took to the field as it all went down on Sunday night at the All Saints Ground as the New Amsterdam Town Day 8-a-side Inter-ward football had a grand opening that saw a triple header unfold.

Tucburg battled it out with New Amsterdam, Soccer City clashed with Canje and Stanleytown took on Edinburgh.

In this year’s edition of the competition, eight teams are participating and already Tucburg have signalled their intention as they registered a commanding 9-2 win over Central New Amsterdam in the opening match of the tournament.

Head Teacher Graham Thomas lead the way as he scored a hat trick, and was supported by Dane Johnson, Dwayne Alleyne and the Williams brothers, Kevin and Ken, who each scored a goal as Tucburg swiftly raced to a massive 7-2 lead.

Even though Dan Arthur and Blade Grant tried to rescue their side, Javier Fraser slipped past the defence of Central to score two more goals for Tucburg.

Match two saw Vryheid, who played under the name, Soccer City, dominate the opening moments

of the match as they raced to a 2-0 lead over Canje thanks to the efforts of the Mickle brothers, Malcolm and Quincy, who were in a hurry to end the match.

However, the tide would soon turn in favour of Canje as they began their hunt for goals, and before Soccer City knew it, Kevin Luminous of Canje had scored twice to dent their hopes as referee Colin Bowery blew the final whistle to take the match into a penalty shootout.

After making a late comeback into the match to take it to penalties, Canje lost 3-2.

In match three, Stanleytown faced off against Edinburgh in a one-sided affair, which saw Stanleytown winning 5-0.

Devon James opened up the scoring for then Edinburgh, gifting the opposition with an own goal to take the score to 2-0. Later on in the game, Derrick Taylor scored another goal followed by Rodger October who proceeded to record a brace and take the score to 5-0.

The competition continues today as Savannah Park and Vrymen’s Erven will clash in the opening encounter, followed by the two semi-final matches. The final is scheduled for the same venue on Sunday.

“Sometimes, parents are very sceptical about participating in sports, we think it goes hand in hand, and we saw the school come out today in full support of these young ladies and I do hope that they can become leaders for the school and leaders in their own right,” Mendonca said.

ExxonMobil Public and Government Affairs Manager Deedra Moe had her own words of encouragement for the students.

“One of the things at ExxonMobil, education is very important, but so is de-

veloping yourself outside of school as well. So, youth development through sport is something that we also support, because it develops leadership skills. So, whether it’s through sports or other extracurricular activities it helps you in your school work,” she said.

Furthermore, she charged them to identify their passion and work towards excelling at it.

The school’s headmistress, LeniDee McBean, expressed gratitude on behalf of the institution to the sponsor for making good on

its promise.

In addition to the grand prize of $300,000 worth of sporting gear, the company handed over cash vouchers to the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and highest goal scorer of the female league.

Shania Easton was presented with the MVP award while Donna Lowe received the highest goal scorer accolade. They will both be able to use their cash voucher at Colours Boutique, Robb Street to select a pair of cleats for their use in the sport.
