Foreign delegation pushes to end death penalty in Guyana A

delegation of international experts on the death penalty is in Guyana to advocate for the abolition of capital punishment in the country.

The team, which hosted a press conference on Tuesday, said it planned to make a submission of its proposal to the National Assembly at its next sitting.

The delegation has received the support of the European Union (EU) and the British High Commission.

oners in Guyana are on death row, even though Guyana has not carried out an execution since 1997.

In his presentation, Lehrfreund pointed out that the death penal-

ty, according to research, does not necessarily deter crimes.

“The first assumption or justification that some countries rely on is that the death penalty is an ef-

fective criminal justice sanction because it deters crime and makes society safer and we would strongly argue that this is a myth and that there is no evidence whatsoever that the death penalty provides any deterrent effect than other forms of punishment,” Lehrfreund argued.

The Director further argued that the public would only be hesitant to accept the abolition of capital punishment, since their opinions were often characterised by a lack of knowledge on the subject.

According to Lehrfreund, it is impossible to ensure that innocent people are not sentenced to death, all the more reason why the death penalty should be abolished.

Susskind revealed that the United States was also currently moving to have the death penalty abolished in all states.

“The death penalty is actually on its way out in the United States. It is currently active, but it is waning and it’s just a matter of time before over the course of the next years or so where the death penalty would likely be abolished. The trends are very clear and over the last 10 years, out of the 52 states, 10 have since abolished the death penalty,” Susskind stated.

ly joined 142 nations who have abolished the death penalty.

As such, the Surinamese Members of Parliament are expected to share their experiences with the National Assembly.

According to Mathoera, who is also a member of the Human Rights Committee, after the abolition of the death penalty, Suriname would have made several new changes in terms of security, which have proved to be successful.

“We have seen after three years of abolishing the death penalty, the impact on crime is not dramatic, it has no impact on crime. Our home side rate is very stable, it is one of the lowest in the Region – Latin America and the Caribbean so that is what we have to show for the effects, so it is a misconception,” the MP said.

The death penalty was imposed on Guyana through British colonial rule. Since then, the United Kingdom has rejected capital punishment and today is vocal in advocating for global abolition.

In 2016, at least 60 death row prisoners were exonerated around the world.

Wrongful convictions remain a distressing reality wherever the death penalty is imposed.

Strathspey accident victim succumbs

Rishi Bhagwandin while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital

wo weeks after a pedestrian was struck down on the Strathspey Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Monday.

The man, who was only recently identified as Rishi Bhagwandin, 28, of Lot 286 Enmore Hope, ECD, reportedly succumbed about 17:30h without regaining consciousness.

Bhagwandin was struck down on October 30, 2018 by a motor car bearing registration number PVV 9941, which was at the time being driven by a 33-year-old Friendship, ECD resident.

Guyana Times had previously reported that the car was proceeding west along

the Railway Embankment when the unidentified man allegedly ran from north to south into the vehicle’s path.

He was struck and fell onto the road’s surface suffering severe neck and head injuries. Publicspirited individuals rushed him to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted to the hospital’s emergency unit. After spending two weeks in hospital, he was identified by relatives a few days before his demise.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and released on bail, but in light of the death of the pedestrian, he would be rearrested and charges were likely to be instituted.

espite some challenges at some Local Authority Areas (LAAs), People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo said on Tuesday his party still managed to prevail during the 2018 Local Government Elections (LGE), securing massive wins countrywide with more than 45,000 votes than the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) combined.

Speaking at the Party’s headquarters at Freedom House, Jagdeo said he is very happy with the results in spite of the many efforts by the APNU/AFC Administration to prevent the Party from making inroads in certain areas, as he berated the AFC for the “crushing defeat” it suffered at this year’s Local Government polls.

Jagdeo pointed out that there is a huge margin between the number of votes cast in favour of the PPP/C as against the APNU and its smaller coalition partner, the AFC. He explained that based on the results thus far, the PPP/C has over 54,000 votes more than the APNU and over 113,000 more votes than the AFC. Jagdeo said too that his party’s performance is good based on all the challenges that it faced in relation to the issues he described as gerrymandering via the changes made to LAAs. “They merged big PPP areas just to change the outcome of the NDC but with this massive PR turnout that we have had, in spite of the attempt to gerrymander the boundaries, the PPP will still have the majority of votes,” he outlined.

The PPP/C General Secretary further said his Party ran a good campaign and will stick to the promises made to the residents for those areas that they won. Based upon the Party’s findings, the results showed wins in five different townships and areas that were not won before by that party.

At the 2016 Local Government Elections, which was the first in 22 years, the PPP/Civic won only three out of the nine towns across the country but according the PPP/C General Secretary, the Party made significant inroads, taking five of the 10 towns. These, he noted, were Mabaruma, Anna Regina, Rose Hall, Corriverton and Lethem – the latter of which the APNU/AFC had won at the last elections.

In Lethem, he said the PPP secured three out of the five seats; APNU, two, and AFC none; while in Mabaruma, the PPP got eight out of 12 seats, whereas it tied with the coalition

the last time around. With a 30 per cent voter turnout in the city for this year’s elections, the Party also saw candidates winning in Georgetown constituencies.

“In the 2016 elections we did not win a single constituency out of the 15. Now the PPP has won three of the constituencies in Georgetown and now we have secured 4 PR (Proportional Representation) seats so we now have seven seats in Georgetown up from two.

That is a massive gain in the city,” he declared.

He however conceded that the party has to do more groundwork to gain additional support in APNU strongholds such as New Amsterdam, Mahdia and Linden, but he nevertheless praised supporters for the PPP gaining a seat in the mining town for the first time. At the same time, Jagdeo feels the AFC should be ashamed of its performance, especially since the smaller coalition partner suffered a loss in the Whim/ Bloomfield area, where Prime Minister Moses

“The AFC in the Whim area seems to be called the All-Family Cabal. Mavis Nagamootoo contested and got 31 votes versus our candidate 216 and Abraham Nagamootoo, the nephew, got 17 versus 213 for our candidate in that Constituency.

In fact he had to get 20 backers,” Jagdeo noted.

He observed that PPP’s wins occurred even though many senior operatives of the AFC were campaigning in the area on several occasions.

“The whole AFC leader-

ship meeting in Whim almost twice and this is the result of it – a crushing defeat; unbelievable crushing defeat; shameful and they were saying that we were scared in the area… I wonder what they must be saying in the AFC camp and they got less than a 1000 votes in Berbice.

Jagdeo highlighted that the PPP also won the Buxton/ Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council for the first time. The next Local Government polls are due in 2021.

Police rank shot after vessel comes under attack

A

Police rank attached to the Macapa Base, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) was on Tuesday shot and injured after the vessel he was travelling in came under attack by a group of men on the Venezuelan side of the border.

Corporal Quincy Alexander, 38, of South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, was

shot to the lower back and was late Tuesday evening medevac to Georgetown to receive medical treatment.

His condition is listed as serious but stable. Based on reports received, the Police rank was among a group of passengers onboard a wooden vessel and as it was travelling from Eteringbang to Macapa, it came under fire.

The incident, according to Police, occurred at about 12:00h in the vicinity of Butanuamu Creek Point, Region Seven. The other passengers in the board reportedly jumped overboard and used the boat as a shield. It is unclear if the Police rank returned fire. An investigation has been launched into the attack.

Lessons and political loss

T

he 2018 Local Government Elections (LGE) are over. The final results will be thoroughly scrutinised, not just to assess gains or losses, but to look for possible trends using recent past elections as bases. The findings will be integral to the planning of contesting parties for the upcoming 2020 General and Regional Elections. This is the context of strengths and weaknesses and where emphasis may have to be placed among other considerations.

In this early post phase, what may find common ground is that the November 12, 2018, LGE was peaceful, the process generally smooth, despite a few hiccups and low voter turnout.

The atmosphere was completely different from what seems customary for General and Regional Elections here. Except for the closure of schools, it wasn’t easy to tell that an election was being held as it appeared to be business as usual. That should be seen as a positive sign given the historical nature of such events.

One area of concern, as based on some reports received, was the seemingly lack of uniformity in executing some aspects of the official processes by Election Day staff of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). In one case, some seemed adamant in not allowing officials of the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to place its seal on ballot boxes at some places of poll.

Placing of a party seal is an important step in helping to safeguard the integrity of the boxes. Any attempt to thwart such will be seen as compromising that integrity. Those cases were eventually resolved after intervention from senior GECOM officials and the seals placed. The obvious question is; why a few staff would choose to disallow the seals when clearly it is counter GECOM’s position on the issue?

It would be frustrating for those on the receiving end who had to seek urgent intervention. This raises expectation as how that will be dealt with by GECOM to ensure that in the future, policies are adhered to by its staff across the board. What penalties, if any, can be instituted on those who may be found to be in breach of agreed protocols?

Such breaches are not uncommon here and have created much unease in the past. Common would be some staff disallowing candidates from observing the counting of ballots and disparity in the understanding of what constitutes a rejected one.

For this to be resolved, among other things, it points to the need for a more extensive voter education programme, which faced some criticism during this election. Also to mandate that all agreed procedures, including placement of seals and who can observe the count, be made public long in advance and placed prominently at polling stations.

In that process must also be education on the importance of LGEs. That aside, the efforts of the senior GECOM officials, who intervened on the night of November 12, must be recognised.

Likewise, the staff who followed agreed procedures in other areas.

Prominent during the 2018 LGE campaign, was the much talked about controversy at the Whim/Bloomfield Local Authority Area (LAA). Given what transpired, court case et al, it became an unofficial referendum on the Alliance For Change (AFC) on one hand and, more specifically, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who hails from Whim on the other.

That was arguably the most anticipated result of the 2018 LGE. From what has been reported and to be confirmed by GECOM, the AFC failed to make any inroads in that area, and by extension, across the country. This is significant, for it would indicate that the party has lost miserably the support it gathered for the 2015 General Election.

Firstly, that will be seen as an indictment of the AFC’s inability to make contributions through programmes and policies for the improvement of the lives of Guyanese, especially Berbicians and seems fast slipping into becoming irrelevant. Secondly, it further exposes the lack of influence the Prime Minister has, not just to the base in his home village, but believably in the country and Government.

The voters have spoken and the message is strong and without ambiguity. The official results at Whim can epitomise the seemingly growing irrelevance of the AFC. All eyes will be on it to see how it deals with this embarrassing situation and more so, how the A Partnership for National Unity responds in the context of the coalition.

Clearly this recent LGE showing by the AFC will have impact on its future. Its worry is therefore understood. It must be asking itself how within three and a half years it could have incurred so much political loss. That would no doubt lead to introspection and thorough analyses of what confronted it, especially since May 2015.

Many, having kept abreast with our national politics, would claim to know the answers, presumably glaring, and would argue that no technical analysis is needed. For one, the AFC’s slogan for the 2018 LGE may have been an indirect referendum on the party itself for its poor showing can now categorise it as not being ‘fit and proppa’.

audi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman tried to persuade Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to start a war in Gaza to take the focus off the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, Middle East Eye reported on Tuesday.

According to sources that spoke to the website, a war in Gaza was one of the measures the Kingdom considered to have international attention shift away from that Khashoggi case.

The sources added that other options included bribing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by buying military equipment from Turkey.

Erdogan says Khashoggi recordings shocked Saudi intelligence

Erdogan said recordings related to the killing of Khashoggi, which Ankara has shared with Western allies, are "appalling", and shocked a Saudi intelligence officer who listened to them, according to local Turkish media.

"We played the recordings regarding this murder to everyone who wanted them from us. Our intelligence organisation did not hide anything. We played them to all who wanted them, including the Saudis, the USA, France, Canada, Germany, Britain," he said.

"The recordings are really appalling. Indeed when

the Saudi intelligence officer listened to the recordings he was so shocked he said: 'This one must have taken heroin, only someone who takes heroin would do this'," Erdogan added.

The Turkish President said that the murder of Khashoggi must have been ordered at the highest level of the Saudi Government, but added that he did not think King Salman was responsible for the order.

"It must be revealed who gave them the order to murder," Erdogan said, referring to a comment by the Saudi Crown Prince who previously said that the matter "will be clarified".

'Tell your boss deed is done,' Saudi officer says after Khashoggi killing – NYT

A member of a Saudi assassination squad phoned a superior shortly after Jamal Khashoggi was murdered and told him "tell your boss" their mission had been accomplished, The New York Times reported.

Citing three people familiar with a recording of Khashoggi's killing collected by Turkish intelligence, the newspaper said while he was not mentioned by name, US officials believe "your boss" was a reference to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

US intelligence officials view the recording as some of the strongest evidence yet linking bin Salman to the murder, it said.

Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, one of 15 Saudis sent to Istanbul to target Khashoggi, made the phone call and spoke in Arabic, sources told the Times.

Mutreb is a security officer who frequently travels with the Crown Prince.

Turkish intelligence officers told US officials they believe the call was made to one of bin Salman's close aides.

Saudi Arabia admitted Khashoggi was killed inside its consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Khashoggi – a Saudi

writer, US resident and Washington Post columnist – entered the building on October 2 to obtain documentation certifying he had divorced his ex-wife so he could remarry.

After weeks of repeated denials that it had anything to do with his disappearance, the Kingdom eventually acknowledged that the murder was premeditated.

It is believed that the killers dissolved the Journalist's dismembered body in acid in one of the rooms at Consul General Mohammed al-Otaibi's residence.

A source in the Turkish Attorney General's office told Al Jazeera that the investigative team found traces of hydrofluoric acid and other chemicals inside a well at the Saudi Consul General's home in Istanbul.

"It would appear, according to the source that during that two-week period, acid was used to dispose of the dismembered body of Jamal Khashoggi."

The Saudi Crown Prince told a group of American evangelical leaders earlier this month that those responsible for Khashoggi's killing would be punished.

These ungrateful acts add to our already sick, sad image on the world stage Dear Editor, A few weeks ago, a city magistrate fined and deported a Cuban national who had overstayed his time in Guyana. This ruling came after the foreign national was incarcerated in a common jail, tried, then fined and sent away. Other nationalities right next door to us here in the Caribbean have met similar fates, but I have singled out the Cubans for a special mention.

My reason for choosing the Cubans, is that Cuba is supposed to be a friend of Guyana. That friendship goes way back, starting with The PPP-led Dr Jagan, when Cheddi got stern condemnations from Burnham, followed by The British and Americans, for his association with that country.

The condemnation coming from Burnham's PNC, was a political ploy to get power, because as soon as the opportunistic Burnham got into office, he saw the very same maligned Cuba as his most valuable friend and neighbour. He sent our sons and daughters to Cuba for training in all fields of endeavor, as is still being done to date. Cuba has been a bedrock for most overseas-trained Guyanese professionals.

Right now, Our President is a guest at Cuba's medical facility; The Centro de Investigaciones Medico Quirugicas in Havana, the best Cuba has to offer. It Seems like when all else has failed, the Guyanese Leader has gone to the Cubans.

Using a Guyanese term, our president is at the present

moment being "patched up" by the Cubans.

Now, picture the foregoing good graces given to us by the Cubans, and compare that to the treatment we are giving the Cubans in return.

Is this the "best" treatment we can give to an overstaying Cuban? Is this the best treatment we can give to a "friend"? I would respond to that by saying it is disgraceful and despicable to say the least!

So, my question, is why humiliate the Cubans? Why belittle the Cubans like that? Why! Is it because we are now on the brink of a legal renaissance and on the strict interpretation of the law as it relates to aliens and foreigners, or is it because of the soon to come oil dollar?

Which is it? I think it is the latter, the "bamboozle" of oil wealth has suddenly caused an air of arrogance in this administration, which gives them the license to treat others disdainfully.

Evident in that court ruling, is arrogance never before seen in this country. There is a newly found "false arrogance" sweeping the nation since this government took office and it is appalling, and shameful. Oil hasn't begun to flow yet, and this is the way Guyana's legal system is going to treat a friend and ally? I shudder to think of their response when the real oil dollars actually flows in. Our image right here in the Caribbean, - and the wider world, paints a sorry picture.

Institutions and individuals (Pt 2) Dear Editor, I am convinced that the slide to dictatorship which Guyana experienced from the late 1960s occurred because many of the individuals that headed important constitutional offices failed to live up to their oath of managing without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.

They allowed the courts, the police and the Elections Commission to become the arms of the ruling PNC. The result was great damage done to our country. Unfortunately, we have not overcome all the effects of that era. That is the real reason why we still lag behind the Caribbean in many aspects.

Of course, there were some who stood up. They were removed due to the silence of the society.

I have been writing about the ominous signs appearing in the conduct of the governance of the country.

Every day, our laws are being violated. This is glaring in relation to procurement and in the awarding

of contracts. This is leading to massive corruption in the society.

Some of the decisions of the courts, the trumpedup charges placed on former ministers and senior officials of the PPP/Civic administration by the DPP are extremely troubling.

Very worrying also, is the behaviour of the Police.

The SOCU has already become a stooge of the political directorate. This body seems more interested in harassing political opponents of the regime. Their mandate to fight money launderers has been lost.

The arrest of Shafraz Beekham in Berbice after he exposed the trickery and il-

legal acts of the AFC in obtaining signatures for the backing of the Party for the Local Government Elections is extremely dangerous.

This occurred after the Minister of Public Security openly threatened the PPP member on the TV. This points to the creeping dictatorship that is taking place.

While most of the society has remained quiet, leaving the PPP/C to fight the illegality of the appointment of the Chairman of the Elections Commission, the purging of that institution, and other public institutions of Indian-Guyanese, is extremely sad. People are sitting back as their rights are gradually being taken away.

It is not too late. Those in top constitutional holders must appreciate that they too are leaders in the society. They must give our country the integrity and morality that is vital for social and economic progress of any society.

The functions of these institutions can either help in the growth of a dictatorship with only the appearance of democracy, or they can help to ensure the slogan ‘Government of the people and by the people’ becomes a reality.

The responsibility is great.

y daughter was battling me about homework and my stress level kept rising ... when she finally sat down to do her homework and requested a snack, I refused to cut up a mango for her. Even just typing these words makes me realise how ridiculous it was, but I was mad and I wanted to show her that she would not get a snack until she did what I wanted her to do. We both became frustrated and angry and she ran off to her room and locked the door. I stood in my kitchen and cried ... Then I remembered something from your newsletter about trying a do-over.

I had to knock a few times before she let me in. I sat next to her on her bed and told her that I was sorry, that I hated when we fought and that I wanted to start the afternoon over again. I suggested that I would go out into the kitchen and when she was ready, she could come in the front door and pretend that she had just gotten home from school. One great way to course correct when you see a collision coming, or when you find yourself sitting in a pile of emotional wreckage, is to ask for a "Do-Over."

Kids love to pretend. They instinctively use play to heal emotional wounds. And they love the idea that together you can rewrite the script to create a better ending. So Do-Overs can be the perfect way to repair when you're off track. Do-Overs acknowledge that we aren't perfect – but we're family, and we'll always work things out.

Here's how: 1. Stop, Drop and Breathe. When you notice you've somehow gotten on the wrong path, just stop. Drop your agenda, just for a moment. Your goal first is to calm yourself and reconnect.

Take a few deep breaths, and say, "I'm sorry, I was getting anxious. Let's have a do-over, ok? What I meant to say was..."

2. If you were a less-than-stellar role model in the anger management department, you'll have to apologise before suggesting the DoOver. Don't worry, your child won't lose respect for you. He'll see that maturity means not being perfect, but being willing to take responsibility, make amends, and try again.

3. Reconnect with a big hug before you suggest the Do-Over. She needs to know you still love her before she's ready for play. And remember that many children need to discharge a little emotion before they're ready for a Do-Over, so she

might burst into tears either when you apologise, or even a few hours later.

She's not only letting go of her anger but also the fear of losing you that was triggered by your conflict.

4. It's okay not to be perfect, but if you find yourself apologising to your child frequently, that's a red flag. What's wrong in your life that's making you lose it with your kid so frequently? You're the grownup, so you're the one who has to address the underlying issues so that you can give your child the best of yourself. There's no shame in asking for help. The shame is in reneging on your responsibility as a parent by damaging your child physically or psychologically.

5. Agree on a family signal that your children can use if you don't notice your voice getting louder. My daughter would interject with, "Mom, is it time for a Do-Over?" whenever I started to get upset. Before long, she began using it as a way to regulate her own emotions or heal a rift between us.

6. Don't be surprised if your kids start asking for Do-Overs when they've drawn your ire. Be generous and always let them start again. You want them practising their best selves; it trains the subconscious to produce that good behaviour as the default.

So next time you find yourself in the middle of an emotional train wreck with your kids, try a family Do-Over.

believe a negative pattern of worry is established in childhood, based upon life circumstances, experiences, and perceptions. I further believe this pattern of worry can be exacerbated by physical realities and predispositions. In order to find a way out, you need to be able to backtrack along your way in, to where worry started in the first place. When you find your entry point, you're that much closer to rediscovering the world outside of worry.

A place of worry can come from a lack of security. Your feelings of security are formed in childhood. When you're a child, you learn to feel secure in your surroundings, your family, yourself, and your abilities. This sense of security provides a stable, strong foundation on which to venture forth into life. When this doesn't happen, you develop a foundation of insecurity, which substitutes a rickety, weakened foundation, ill-suited for adulthood and its challenges, risks, and dilemmas.

A child with a sense of security looks out across the gulf to adulthood and sees a broadly supported expanse with plenty of room to move and solid railings. There's no need to focus on the abyss below because there is no fear of falling. Instead, the child has a wide-open view of the wonders that await. A child with a sense of insecurity looks out across the gulf to adulthood and sees a gap-filled, narrow track hemmed in on all sides by frayed, untrustworthy ropes. Forget looking up and out; there's an absolute need to focus on the abyss below because each fearful step forward contains the potential for falling. What starts out in childhood translates into adulthood.

There are a variety of situations and conditions that can lead to this kind of insecurity growing up. Here are some to consider: Death of a parent. When a parent dies, that shield is ripped from the child. Even within a family with a surviving parent or other supportive adults, children experience psychological shock when a parent dies.

Abandonment or rejection by a parent. When a parent discards a child through abandonment, a child assumes all is not right with him or her.

When a parent intentionally chooses to reject a child, a

child learns they aren't good enough.

Divorce. Overwhelmingly, divorce not only sunders the relationship of the spouses but also rips apart the world of the children.

Frequent moves. Often, parents view a move as a positive change, due to a new house or new job. Children, however, have different priorities, and the one thing they cherish, such as a friend, teacher, a school, or an activity, can be sacrificed in a decision to relocate.

Learning disabilities.

Imagine what it would be like to go to school every day, apprehensive that you won't be able to meet expectations.

Difficulties in school.

Children often worry about their work in school, but they also worry about social interactions. A child who is bullied, unsuccessful, or simply unnoticed learns to distrust what could happen tomorrow.

Family alcoholism or drug abuse. When alcohol or drug abuse is present in the home, it becomes a home of calm and crisis. There are lulls between violent storms, whose appearance is not so much a matter of if, but when.

Emotional abuse. If a child is told over and over they are not good enough, they'll believe it and be fearful of venturing out much as an adult.

Physical abuse, including sexual abuse. The devastation of physical and sexual abuse is so vast that it permeates all aspects of a child's life. This includes the concept of secrecy and holding on to the family truths in secret.

Perfectionism in the family. This is one of the most pervasive ways a child is taught to worry. No one can be perfect all the time, so every task, every expectation has a builtin guarantee of failure.

A fearful or insecure parent or significant adult. Some parents communicate hostility and negativity that damage the self-esteem of their children. Other parents can be more passively damaging through a pattern of constant doubt, fear, worry, and anxiety.

Is it any wonder, if you grew up with one of these, that you would be a little more suspicious about life? Is it any wonder you might have developed a survival strategy of worry? Consistent worry can become a pattern that eats away at the foundation of life. (psychologytoday.com)

AFC defends poor showing at LGE – says performance will not impact Cummingsburg negotiations

hile the Alliance For Change (AFC) believes the Local Government Elections (LGE) has not weakened its clout against its coalition partner, the results tell a story of a party that failed to mount a credible challenge on its own.

LGE 2018 was intended to be a test run for the 2020 General and Regional Elections. With the AFC trying to have the Cummingsburg Accord revised while being steadily weakened in its ministerial portfolios, sources have posited that the election results can only mean more bad news for the smaller coalition party.

Returning Officer (Georgetown), Duarte Hetsberger, announced on Tuesday that the AFC came third in the municipality of Georgetown. They got 3059 votes and two seats from the Proportional Representation (PR) component.

They trail the People’s Progressive Party, which got 7050 votes and four seats. The A Partnership for National Unity received 18,127 votes, in the process attaining nine seats. Overall, APNU has 21 seats on the City council, while PPP has seven.

The AFC just has the two seats it gained from the PR component and did not muster enough First Past the Post (FPTP) votes to get an additional seat at a Council that once produced two AFC Deputy Mayors. When asked about these results, AFC’s Region Four campaign coordinator Michael Leonard said his party’s votes still mattered.

“I’m not sure if I should say something went wrong.

The APNU/AFC contested the last time in 2016, as a coalition. They were obviously riding the success of 2015, so there was no true test to see what the constituency of the AFC versus the APNU is.”

“This time we ran alone,” Leonard continued. “And I think we did relatively well.

We know now what we can attract. We know where we are. I don’t have an issue with that. We got two seats off our own strength.”

He was not too worried about the potential impact on AFC’s ability to negotiate better terms in the

Cummingsburg Accord.

Leonard pointed out that from the results rolling in, APNU still needs the AFC. “It is very clear from the results across the country that the APNU by themselves cannot defeat the PPP. So it seems the coalition is very necessary. And we’ve said before that we believe in coalition politics.”

“So I don’t see anything changing or happening with the Accord. If what puts you over the threshold to get the Presidency or the majority is one vote, then it’s one vote.

Every vote counts. Every seat counts.”

Leonard acknowledged that the overall voter turnout was very low. He observed that more middle-aged persons than youths came out to vote. As such, Leonard pointed to voter apathy and disinterest.

But AFC had put much focus on youths in the campaign, including as many youth on their platform as possible. Asked about their mobilisation efforts among the youths, the campaign manager said their 3000 votes was still significant.

Performance

Besides Georgetown, the AFC has come up short in several other areas. For instance in Lethem, preliminary results of the 1334 valid votes show that the PPP secured 676 with three of the five PR seats, while APNU got 528 votes and the remaining two seats. The residents of the municipality deemed the AFC ‘unfit and improper’ after they only managed to scrape 130 votes and no seat on the Town Council.

Lethem was officially declared a township in October 2017 and was being headed by APNU’s Kerry Jarvis as Mayor. However, Jarvis was unable to retain his seat, with PPP’s Jason Wilson pulling the seat from under him.

Of the 10 seats up for grabs in the municipality, the PPP now has six and APNU, four.

PPP also dominated in Rose Hall, Corriverton and Anna Regina municipalities.

The AFC has been coming in for much criticism, especially from the parliamentary Opposition, for what many describe as the submissive role it has been playing since joining forces with APNU. The AFC top leadership had, in mid-November last year, moved to revise its governing agreement with its majority coalition partner.

The Cummingsburg Accord, the arrangement which guides the two partners, has a lifespan of a minimum of three years and maximum of five years.

The Accord was focused primarily on the General and Regional Elections. However, a stalemate ensued after the two sides could not come to

Bus driver found guilty of death of pedestrian, gets 2 years jail

resident of Farm, East Bank Demerara was on Tuesday found guilt for causing the death of 43-year-old Franklyn Dover by dangerous driving on August 8, 2018, and was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

The sentence was handed down by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to 32-yearold Jamal Lowe who was previously granted bail on the charge.

It was alleged that on August 8, 2018, at Covent Garden, East Bank

Demerara (EBD), he drove minibus BVV 2848 in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Franklyn Dover.

According to the prosecution’s case, on the day in question, the defendant was heading in a southern direction when the deceased attempted to cross the road, and the bus reportedly collided with him causing him to fall and receiving injuries.

He was rushed to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital (Diamond Diagnostic Centre) where he

succumbed to his injuries.

The defendant was later arrested and charged for the offence.

His defence attorney, in a plea of mitigation for his client, told the Chief Magistrate that his client is a father of two and is the sole breadwinner of his family.

However, after Lowe was found guilty of the charge, the Chief Magistrate handed down a sentence of twoyear sentence.

Phone snatcher freed after victim refused to offer evidence

A

teenager who was nabbed after he stole a phone was on Monday set free after he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, after the victim refused to offer evidence against him.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Wilson stood before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman and denied that on November 10, 2018, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he stole one LG cellphone valued $36,000; property of

Kesha Blackman.

The Virtual Complainant in a statement told the Magistrate the she does not wish to pursue the matter against Wilson and will not be offering any evidence against

him.

As a result, Wilson’s freedom was restored after Magistrate Latchman without hesitation dismissed the charge of simple larceny against him.

Not because it’s not good form but more because it didn’t even take a moron (“people with an IQ of 51–70, being superior in one degree to "imbecile" (IQ of 26–50) and superior in two degrees to "idiot" (IQ of 0–25) to know that Moses Nagamootoo must’ve been drinking a lot of that old time Berbice Bush Rum when he vowed the AFC would whup the PPP there!!

So what will he say now? “PPP intimidation”? Who was “intimidating” who in the voting booth when they placed their mark for the PPP’s candidate rather than his sister who stood for the AFC? This LGE for the AFC wasn’t even a Greek Tragedy – you know…where you know from the beginning the protagonist is doomed – it was more like the “farce” that Nagamootoo’s hero Marx spoke about! History repeats itself, "the first as tragedy, then as farce"!

The first time was just two days ago when Nagamootoo marched in almost solitary dejection down the Middle walk of Whim at the “Mini rally” he and Ramjattan held – to rouse the folks in the village. The 30 votes his sister later received must’ve all been there in their free AFC mustard-yellow caps and T-shirts. The giveaway of what was to come when even these “pay-a-crowd” folks hid their faces under the brim of their caps when the Chronic took their pic! You’d think they were being herded down the chute like those criminals going to their trial!!

Nagamootoo had said Whim was a straight battle between the AFC and the PPP. Well, now that the AFC’s been so comprehensively crushed in the battle – in Whim and elsewhere – what’s he and Ramjattan gonna do now? Are they going to man up; admit their defeat and cry “No Mas”? Your Eyewitness doesn’t think so. There’s no honour among folks like this duo.

They’ll now backtrack on their words and come up with some BS as to why they should still continue to draw their mega salaries (plus perks!) as ‘representatives” of people who’ve so resoundingly rejected them.

In Berbice, when people have no shame about their sordid actions, folks tell them to “rub blackpot” – soot – on their faces. That is, to try and hide their shame which would be apparent on their faces. Nagamootoo and Ramjattan, however, showed they were beyond the “blackpot” stage from their acceptance of their humiliations by the PNC in neutering them into political eunuchs! Ouch!!

They’ll be prancing around! Shameless! …mourning Stan Lee He’d been around so long, your Eyewitness was beginning to think he was immortal – like the Norse god Thor, he’d brought back into the popular imagination. He’s talking about Stan Lee of course, who, along with Jack Kirby, created the Super hero universe hawked by Marvel Comics. Lee is now dead at the age of 95.

Your Eyewitness has to take time-out from his ruminations on all the political miasma swirling around him to pay tribute to this man who actually got him to develop his love of reading. School had gotten rather jejune, to say the least, with the “New Caribbean Readers” describing the travails of Mr Joe and his farm. While the DC stable with Superman and Batman helped to fill a void, it was the introduction of Spiderman and his cohorts – with their snappy, smartalecky chatter – that got him hooked. Marvel Comics actually filled an ever expanding void!

The move to the big screen – and then the introduction of CGX – brought out a whole new generation to the Marvel Universe.

But it’ll never beat rifling through those paperbound comics! …gyrating ladies There’s quite a lot of heat being generated by the letter of one lady protesting videos of gyrating ladies’ bamsies being projected “in the faces” of “horrified” children at the Women’s T-20! Well!!

PPP makes inroads in Georgetown, cops 7 seats

he Guyana Elections C o m m i s s i o n (GECOM) results show that the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has taken Georgetown, with Mayor Patricia Chase Green’s constituency solidly supporting her. But the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has showed improved gains in the city, compared to 2016.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Returning Officer for Georgetown Duarte Hetsberger announced that APNU would hold the majority on the City Council.

APNU got a total of 18,127 votes.

This time, however, the PPP has significantly more seats on the Council than before and is second only to APNU in terms of votes. Commenting on the coalition’s loss of seats,

People’s National Congress (PNC) Chairperson Volda Lawrence acknowledged that they have more work to do.

“With a turnout of that number, certainly one would expect a low voter turnout at that level would have affected everybody. So we don’t see it as a loss. What we see it as is taking stock of the fact that we need to do more to educate people about Local Government.”

“This is their thing, (but) I believe many persons have not bought in to Local Government. I believe there were a lot of expectations.

There were personal expectations that did not materialise. So a few people felt they shouldn’t exercise their franchise,” Lawrence also noted.

Lawrence noted that APNU nevertheless has a new cadre of persons who went out and performed.

While this is true, there are still some old faces. These include Chase Green, who received a notable 2212 votes in her Tucville/North Ruimveldt constituency.

The Mayor has had to testify before a recent Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into City Hall… a CoI that has uncovered many discrepancies. While it focused on the actions of Town Clerk Royston King, sections of society expressed the view that Chase Green, having presided over everything, should face some of the heat.

PPP’s Param Persaud, with 1279 votes in constituency six, is another new face at City Hall, as is APNU’s Ubraj Narine and Cilesia Hall. PPP Councillor Bishram Kuppen, who has at times lead the drive for transparency at City Hall, was narrowly edged out by APNU candidate Ivelaw Henry in constituency seven (Bourda/Stabroek/ Lacytown).

The PPP received seven seats, including four from the PR component. It is a definite improvement, as they only got two seats in 2016. The AFC’s only two seats came from the PR method. There was a 28.3 per cent voter turnout.

She also denied that the Local Government Elections would be a precursor to 2020s General and Regional Elections. Lawrence had faith that the 2020 election would see a more positive turn out, as people are likely to take it more seriously.

PPP records huge win at LGE in Region 5 T he People’s Progressive Party (PPP) recorded a huge win at Monday’s poll in Region Five (MahaicaBerbice) after picking up 8356 votes as against the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) which won 5960, and the Alliance For Change (AFC), 270.

The PPP won five of the 10 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) in that region, while there was a tie in one of the NDCs. The region saw that party winning the Blairmont/ Gelderland NDC with 11 seats, while APNU secured three seats. The party also won the Rosignol/Zee Lust NDC with 13 seats, as APNU was only able to secured three seats.

There was at tie at the Woodlands/Bel Air NDC in terms of seats with both parties winning two constituencies each. However, in terms of votes cast, the PPP

got 401 and APNU 283.

The PPP took all 18 seats in the Bath/Woodley Park NDC and 10 in the Union/Naarstigheid NDC. APNU won six seats there.

In the Seafield/Tempe NDC, APNU claimed 11 seats and the PPP, five; while at the Profit/Rising

Sun NDC, the PPP got two seats and APNU nine.

In the Park/Abary NDC, the PPP got 10 of the 16 seats with APNU claiming the others.

All four seats in the Hamlet/Change NDC went to APNU which also won the Woodlands/Farm NDC with a 7-6 majority. The eighth seat went to an independent candidate.

PPP Region Five Supervisor Fizal Jafferally stated that one of the largest constituencies in the region; Bath/Woodley Park, the place of poll was to one end of the constituency, forcing some voters to have to travel more than two miles in order to vote. This, he noted, was a major concern for the party.

In addition, he related that the Party’s showing at the polls was good as it recorded more votes than it did at the 2016 Local Government Elections.

Herstelling residents call on elected officials to address woes

The roads that need rehabilitative works

n the height of the 2018 Local Government Election, residents of Herstelling, on the East Bank of Demerara, are calling for better roads since the current situation has become unbearable.

Speaking with Guyana Times on Monday, aggravated residents of Rum Shop Street, which is intersected

by First, Second, Third and Fourth Streets, vented their frustration over the condition of the roadways.

Presently, there are large potholes which extend several metres and are sometimes impassable during the rainy season.

The residents are hoping that the newly elected executives will be able to fill these gaps at the very least.

Residents would have approached the Neighbourhood Democratic Council on a few occasions but they were told that funding to repair these roads was not available.

“Well we went to them like a couple times and every time they saying that the money is not enough to do the road so we really would like for it to be fixed.

Is years now and people get-

ting fed up,” Kumar who lives on Third Street said.

Meanwhile, his neighbour told Guyana Times, “Is just to get the holes fill up. Like with brick or stone but they use sand and that wash away like couple of weeks and then they say that they can’t do anything.

So what we must do?”

Another section of Herstelling has faced the same dilemma and when visited by this publication some time ago, the residents related that many persons had to cordon off the front of their properties because vehicles drove on their parapet whenever it rains to avoid driving in the potholes.

Additionally, a business owner had indicated that she was left with no choice but to place garbage bins alongside her fence to avoid damage to her property.

“The vehicles are driving up here. We got to put out the garbage barrel just to save the entrance here and then when the rain fall, it’s worse because the water keep coming in your yards.”

Whoever is elected to office, the residents are calling for the roads to be fixed.

Teenage mother allegedly watches twins die at WDRH – accuses doctors, nurses of negligence

young mother has blamed doctors and nurses at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) for the death of her twin babies on Saturday last.

The teenage mother, Preya Eshwar of Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), explained that at about 04:00h on Saturday, she was at home and began to feel contractions. As such, she was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where she was examined and told she had developed an infection.

Doctors there referred her to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where her tribulations began.

According to the aggrieved mother, whilst there, she

was further examined and told that the infection could cause her to lose her babies.

She was already in the seventh month of her pregnancy.

Nevertheless, she revealed that she was given a drip to induce labour and then left alone for close to two hours. After she began to cry out for unbearable pain, she was wheeled to a delivery room in the upper flat of the hospital and left unattended for another hour.

The young woman related that she felt her babies kicking and as such called out to doctors. She subsequently delivered her first baby. “When the first one came out, he was crying

loudly so they put him on my stomach even though I still hadn’t given birth to the second one,” the teenager stressed.

She gave birth to her second child but the doctors and nurses at the hospital were too busy recording her to notice that the baby had fallen into the bedpan.

“They deh laughing as I am in pain trying to push out my second baby. And a Cuban doctor had her phone and she was videoing me, I don’t know why. The baby came out and fall into the bedpan,” Eshwar cried.

The baby was reportedly picked up and also placed on her stomach crying. A nurse reportedly clothed the babies and placed them under

a light in the delivery room before leaving.

“They leave my babies crying and shivering under a light because the room was very cold… they didn’t even try to help them, they just left them to die right in front of my eyes… I watched my

babies die”.

Later, the babies were removed by nurses and Eshwar was told that she had given birth to stillborn babies. “They tell me that my babies couldn’t live because their lungs wasn’t developed enough but how

could they decide that and just leave them to die?”

Eshwar questioned.

The young woman and her family are calling on the Public Health Ministry to look into the issue and are warning pregnant women against going to the medical facility to give birth.

“Them nurses that they have looking after you, all of them look young just like me and they deh on their phones while I was in pain… this was the worst thing I ever experienced… the Ministry needs to look into this and nobody should go there, pay ya’ll money and go private… one of the nurse said that my babies make 20 for the month that they lost,” the frustrated and aggrieved mother stated.

PPP records landslide victory in Region 6 at LGE

T

he People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is claiming a landslide victory in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) at Monday’s Local Government Elections (LGE).

Of the 261 seats which were available through the 18 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) and three towns in the region – Corriverton, New Amsterdam and Rose Hall – the Alliance For Change (AFC) was able to secure one seat while the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) won 73 and the PPP, 188.

This is why the PPP is claiming a landslide victory. The PPP won two of the three towns; Rose Hall and Corriverton. In Corriverton, the PPP won 14 of the 16 seats with the other two went to APNU, and in Rose Hall, the PPP claimed 11 seats and APNU, five.

In New Amsterdam, the AFC claimed its only seat in the region and the APNU won 10. The PPP copped

three. APNU, however, lost two seats since it previously held 12.

Meanwhile, both the PPP and the APNU won one each of the two new NDCs. The Plegtanker/Koortbradt NDC on the East Bank of Berbice saw APNU getting five seats and the PPP three, while at the Wyburg/Carracas NDC in West Canje saw the PPP receiving four seats and APNU, two.

The Crabwood Creek NDC saw the PPP taking all 14 seats and at the 52-

74 NDC, they took 17 seats and APNU one. The 51/Good Hope NDC saw five seats going to APNU and nine to the PPP. At the Maida/Tarlogy NDC, the PPP claimed eight seats while the APNU copped two. The APNU got six seats at the Bushlot/Adventure NDC with the PPP

securing eight.

In the Black Bush Polder NDC, the PPP won 17 seats and APNU, one; while at the Hogsty/Lancaster NDC, the APNU secured 12 seats and the PPP, two.

The Massindonia/Joppa NDC saw the PPP winning five seats and APNU seven, while at the Whim/Bloom Field NDC the PPP won 13 seats and APNU only securing one.

The PPP won 13 seats in the Johns/ Port Mourant NDC and an individual candidate Orin McDourga the remaining seat. The Kinlcoy/Hamphire NDC saw the PPP taking all 14 seats. The party also took a clean sweep in the Kinyre/Bolem NDC which has 16 seats

available.

The Fyrish/Gibraltar NDC saw APNU winning 10 seats and the PPP eight.

The PPP also claimed victory in both of the NDCs in East Canje. At the Canefield/Enterprise NDC, the Party secured 15 seats and APNU one, while at the Ordanance/Fortlands NDC, the PPP secured 12 and APNU claimed two. On the East Bank of Berbice at the Enfield/New Dow Park NDC, the PPP won 11 seats and APNU winning five. Only 43.5 per cent of the 91,475 voters turned out at this year’s LGE. However, it represented a higher voter turnout for Region Six at Local Government Elections that in 2016.

wenty-nine ranks attached to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) graduated with masters, degrees and diplomas in various disciplines when the 52nd Convocation ceremony of the University of Guyana was held at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday last.

Recently retired Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud also graduated with a Commonwealth Master of Public Administration.

Police Commissioner Leslie James during his recent visits to the respective Police Divisions and who is also pursuing a Master’s Degree in

Public Administration at the said institution urged ranks to pursue higher learning and commended those who already did so, either at the University of Guyana or other tertiary institutions.

Commissioner James underscored that “I (he) would like to see each member of the Force rigorously pursuing higher learning, after all, an educated workforce can turn around the image the Guyana Police Force currently has”.

Among those who graduated were three Superintendents, a Deputy Superintendent, three Assistant Superintendents, a Cadet Officer, an Inspector, three Sergeants, 12 Corporals, a Lance Corporal and four Constables. Those who completed that Commonwealth Executive Masters of Public Administration are Superintendents Brian Eastman, Dion Moore and Khali Pareshram.

15-year-old faulty pipe network delays upgrades in Port Kaituma

T

he completion of ongoing upgrade works at the Port Kaituma Water Supply System has been marred by a number of factors that existed more than 15 years ago. This includes an unstable power supply and a badly designed pipe network, which has contributed to numerous leaks.

Managing Director, Dr Richard Van West-Charles and a team of senior technical officials visited the Region One (Barima-Waini) community on Friday, November 9, 2018, to assess the progress of works undertaken to date.

He was informed that the distribution system, which exists in an undulating terrain, has a lot of its mains exposed on the surface of the road. It was also noted that flush-out valves were none-existent in some sections of the network.

A technical team from Georgetown is currently in the community to undertake corrective works to the distribution network, which includes making the necessary interconnections and reorganising the entire distribution system. Over 80 leaks were discovered, with 20 of those being major ones.

They are in the process of repairing those leaks and installing flush-out and air valves, so as to facilitate an improved quality and level

of service to residents.

Additionally, works are underway for the development of a new well that was recently drilled in the compound of the Citrus Grove pump station. It was drilled at the required depth of 210 feet. The contractor attached to this project is Chowramootoo Construction Service.

GWI’s aim is to provide a daily water supply to residents of Port Kaituma and to phase out sectionalising.

Currently sections of the community are receiving water two days per week.

However, this is dependent on a sufficient power supply from Kaituma Power Inc and the reconfiguration of the distribution network.

Plans are also underway to reduce the usage of the river water as the main source of supply and utilise additional groundwater sources.

The residents of Port Kaituma have been provided with surface water from the Port Kaituma River for over 15 years, which is at risk of contamination by mining and agricultural activities. Recently, the water from the river was contaminated with high levels of mercury. Several subsequent tests were conducted and revealed that the level of the mercury decreased significantly to acceptable levels.

Sullivan expressed gratitude on behalf of the Guyana Police Force, while

emphasising that the supplies would be a boost for the Force’s Children’s Christmas Party.

The SDC Inc is a newly-established security firm, which offers bodyguard services as well as tactical and academic training and will be working hand in hand with local law enforcement agencies. As a result, it will be making continuous donations to similar organisations within the law enforcement sector.

he Local Government Election (LGE) 2018 was true people power. The people in 80 Local Authority Areas (LAAs) stood up, spoke out and resisted the downward path the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) have been taking Guyana. They rejected dictatorship, discrimination, political harassment and intimidation, incompetence and corruption. They deemed the APNU/AFC clueless and visionless. They affirmed their faith in the People’s Dr Leslie Ramsammy Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and its leaders, again.

The results of LGE 2018 is a stern repudiation of APNU/AFC. The results have confirmed that the Trotman, Nagamootoo, Ramjattan-led AFC has outlived itself. The results confirmed that the Guyanese people have lost confidence in the Grangerled APNU/PNC. The biggest message of the LGE 2018 is that the Guyanese people have sent an unequivocal message to Moses Nagamootoo, the chest-puffing Prime Minister, who wants to be President, that he can stop dreaming, that he will never be the people's President.

LGE 2018 is now etched in the history books. While the election results are still being formalised and the nation is awaiting the official release of the results by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), there are a number of blazing headlines already creating political havoc for APNU-People’s National Congress (PNC) and the AFC. One shocking headline must be the news that the PPP won comfortably the BuxtonFoulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). The other headline has to be the rejection of hometown candidates, like Moses Nagamootoo and Khemraj Ramjattan. Yet another headline is that the people of Guyana reject overwhelmingly any increases in property tax, the threat of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown of implementing the parking meters and introducing other onerous fees on businesses in the city.

Buxton, along with Linden and South Georgetown, has long been the mecca, the bastion of PNC-power in Guyana. The village of Buxton has been uncompromising in its support of the PNC for every year of the existence of the PNC. That the PPP/C was able to obtain the support of citizens to win control of Buxton-Foulis NDC must be sending tsunami-style shockwaves through the ranks of Congress Place and dumped the AFC to its grave. The win in Buxton-Foulis, together with massive gains in Georgetown and New Amsterdam and encouraging gains in Linden, Kwakwani, Mahdia and Bartica adds to the shock. Compounding the problem is that the PPP, which won three townships in 2016, now has registered victories in five townships. In virtually every one of the 80 LAAs, the PPP has improved or made impressive gains in support. But while shocking to the APNU/PNC and AFC, the population is not surprised. The people have been betrayed and feel despondent and they allowed their votes to speak for them.

Moses Nagamootoo, the siren-loving Prime Minister, made Whim a referendum. For him, as he showed up on Sunday, the evening before the LGE, the voting was for bragging rights in Whim. He took on Bharrat Jagdeo and bellicose his way in declaring that Whim is Nagamootoo's turf, Whim is his Kingdom, Whim belongs to him. The people massively rejected Nagamootoo. He and the AFC and their local candidates failed to even match the number of backers they claimed supported their list. The elections confirmed that the AFC cheated and included people as backers through fraud and deceit. GECOM and a Judge might have facilitated the fraud perpetuated by the AFC when the AFC included citizens as backers of their list against their will and using total and unfettered deceit. The results vindicated the citizens who objected in the way the AFC used their names.

But it is not just Nagamootoo who was rejected by his hometown. Ramjattan lost massively in his village. Like Nagamootoo, he spent the whole campaign period for LGE 2018 hiding. Ramjattan drove his fancy, siren-equipped vehicle to Berbice and directly to the TV stations from where he attempted to speak to people. He did not feel welcome and he was scared to face people. The cane cutters and sugar workers, rice farmers and citizens across the Corentyne villages were treated as invisible people. On Monday, November 12, 2018, the people made Ramjattan and Nagamootoo invisible.

Charandass, in Canje, was invisible and other leaders of AFC disappeared. The results signalled why they disappeared.

They betrayed people and people used the power of their X to repudiate them. The repudiation was stern, severe and final because the AFC has had its last nail hammered into its coffin.

he A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has reportedly managed to win all eight constituencies across Linden, according to preliminary results for this year’s Local Government Elections (LGE). In addition to a clean sweep in Linden, the APNU also won Georgetown, New Amsterdam, Madhia and Bartica.

The APNU reportedly copped 13 of the 16 seats in Linden – two less than it won in 2016. The Alliance For Change (AFC), according to the preliminaries, will maintain its two seats in the municipality, while the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has reportedly

secured one seat.

This is the first time the PPP has managed to secure a seat in the municipality since the hosting of LGE in 2016. While the APNU managed a win of the constituencies, it reportedly won only three of the Proportional Representative (PR) seats.

Four parties have contested for seats in Linden, with the additional being the United Republican Party (URP).

In the eight constituencies, the APNU picked up 3361 votes, while the AFC copped 1305, followed by the PPP with 396 and URP with 76.

At Kwakwani, the APNU has reportedly managed to secure four seats out

of 12 at the Neighbourhood Democratic Council, while the AFC and Kwakwani United for Progress (KUFP) has secured three seats, followed by the PPP

with two seats. Reports are that the APNU has managed to secure two of the PR seats while PPP took one, AFC secured one and the KUFP took two seats.

GLSC hands over lease to National Toshaos Council

he Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) on Tuesday presented a lease to the National Toshaos Council (NTC) for a plot of land in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

The land will house the secretariat of the Toshaos

Council. The Indigenous leaders, during the 2016 NTC Conference, had requested a plot of land from the Government to construct its long-awaited secretariat.

During a briefing handing over ceremony on Tuesday afternoon, Commissioner

and GL&SC Chief Executive, Trevor Benn, reminded that the GLSC had expedited the request of the NTC to have the land available.

“There has been a lease available since February for the National Toshaos Council,” he said, while

addressing the Toshaos and Minister within the Indigenous People’s Affairs Ministry, Valerie GarridoLowe at the simple ceremony.

Benn also called for greater dialogue between the GLSC and the NTC, noting

that that is the only way a number of land-related issues affecting the Indigenous communities could be addressed.

“We at the GLSC have an open door policy and we are prepared to work with you to have your issues addressed, we may not be able to do so individually but as a body, I can assure you that we are going to look closely at the land related issues affecting your various communities,” he assured. To this end, Benn also pledged the support of the legal section of the GLSC to assist the NTC on land related matters they may encounter.

Minister within the Indigenous People’s Affairs Ministry, Valarie GarridoLowe praised the GL&SC for expediting the process on behalf of the NTC and also called for a better working relationship between the GLSC and the NTC, stating “That is the only way the matters we hear about daily about your lands are going to be addressed, you cannot have two and three persons sharing different views on a matter and expect that it will be addressed”.

She further stated, “Meet with your people, sit as a Council, and then raise concrete issues with the Lands Commission so that those

sues with their lands and because of this, development is slow in some of those communities because there are not so much you can do on disputed lands,” he reasoned.

“So my fellow colleagues we see the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission as a very important partner that will aid in our development and we must be prepared to work with them to have those issues affecting us addressed,” he added.

Fredericks also thanked the GLSC for fast-tracking the NTC’s lease, pointing out that it signals the beginning of great things to come for the Indigenous peoples. “So much we can do with our own secretariat, our own land and this is just the beginning of great things to come,” he posited. Toshaos from the various Indigenous communities, raised a number of land related issues with the GL&SC, and the Commission through Benn, promised that those issues will be looked at and addressed once if falls within the ambit of the GL&SC.

CCJ strikes down Guyana’s cross-dressing law – trans litigants, Caribbean civil society groups welcome ruling

I

n a landmark decision which could set the stage for similar rulings, the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled in favour of striking down Guyana’s laws against cross-dressing, saying that the colonial-era law was unconstitutional. After gaining independence from Britain in 1966, Guyana adopted many colonial-era laws, including the 1893 Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act that effectively banned men or women from wearing clothing conventionally worn by the opposite gender for “improper purposes”.

This section was never clearly defined leaving the door open for constitutional challenges which appellants Quincy “Gulliver” McEwan, Seon “Angel” Clarke, Joseph “Peaches” Fraser and Seyon “Isabella” Persaud mounted against their February 9, 2009 arrest, detention and conviction in Georgetown. After they appealed the law banning their mode of dress, former acting Chief Justice Ian Chang in September 2013 said that while the act of cross dressing was not a crime in itself, when for an “improper purpose”, it constitutes an offence. That ruling was also appealed at Guyana’s Appeal Court, but their case was similarly dismissed in 2017.

The four persons who were born male and later opted for a transgendered way of life took

their case all the way to the CCJ, citing their treatment was discriminatory, based on their position that the law violated their constitutional rights to equality and non-discrimination and freedom of expression. The Justices of the Trinidad-based authority agreed with the applicants.

They, therefore, declared the 1893 law unconstitutional and ordered that it must be struck from the laws of Guyana, a decision which could unsettle many in religious circles.

The four transgendered persons had all pleaded guilty to the cross-dressing charge and McEwan, Clarke and Persaud were fined $7500 whereas Fraser was fined $19,500. The then acting Chief Magistrate after imposing the sentence told them that they must go to church and give their lives to Jesus Christ, advising them that they were confused about their sexuality. The judicial officer was still on the bench at the time.

In this regard, the CCJ Judges, citing Guyana’s Constitution, adopted a secular view regarding the Magistrate’s comments.

“Judicial officers may not use the bench to proselytise, whether before, during or after the conclusion of court proceedings. Secularism is one of the cornerstones upon which the Republic of Guyana rests,” a section of the CCJ’s release noted.

ver 200 residents of Linden, Region 10 (Upper DemeraraBerbice) benefited from a medical outreach conducted by the Humanitarian Assistance Programme (HAP) and the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) over the weekend.

The two charitable organisations collaborated with regional authorities to provide various healthcare services.

Scores of residents flocked New Silvercity Secondary, at Wismar, Linden, to take advantage of the services being offered.

According to Linden Mayor and Town Council Public Relations Officer (PRO), Tiffany Stoll, while it was not the first outreach of its kind, it is of a greater magnitude.

"The Linden Mayor and Town Council is happy to partner with the CIOG and The Humanitarian Assistance Programme (HAP) to bring health services to Linden. We think it’s a great initiative.

Presently we have cancer tests being done, persons are receiving glasses, there is a gynaecologist also here and we are

happy to bring this initiative to Linden and we are asking other organisations to follow suit so we can develop Linden as a town," Stoll noted.

Residents were also able to access free medical advice and treatment, with approximately one hundred persons accessing free eye examinations and free spectacles where necessary.

The CIOG provided residents with healthcare packages and clothing.

Representative Husma Abdool Samad said the organisation was proud to be a part of the initiative. Member of Parliament (MP) Jermaine Figuera expressed gratitude on behalf of residents of the community. "The turnout is a massive turnout. We have persons from all constituencies of Wismar. I’ve even noticed some residents from Mackenzie even as far as Amelia’s Ward also here. So this was a well-publicised initiative and I am happy that the community members saw it fit to come out and utilise the services, the professional services that are being afforded to the residents of the community....", he said.

said that the cross-dressing section was “highly undemocratic”, making it now acceptable for men to dress as women in Guyana. The Court reasoned that the law violated freedom of expression guaranteed in Guyana’s Constitution.

The CCJ panel comprised President Justice Adrian Saunders and Justices Jacob Wit, Winston Anderson, Maureen Rajnauth-Lee and Denys Barrow who “agreed that this law was from a different time and no longer served any legitimate purpose in Guyana”. The newly-appointed Justice Saunders reiterated, “Law and society are dynamic, not static. A Constitution must be read as a whole. Courts should be astute to avoid hindrances that would deter them from interpreting the Constitution in a manner faithful to its essence and its underlying spirit. If

one part of the Constitution appears to run up against an individual fundamental right, then, in interpreting the Constitution as a whole, courts should place a premium on affording the citizen his/her enjoyment of the fundamental right, unless there is some overriding public interest.”

The Court was of the view that the law was also “unconstitutionally vague” and that it violated the appellants’ right to protection of the law and was contrary to the rule of law. A majority of the Judges, Justices Saunders, Wit and Barrow, also upheld the appeal on the basis that the law resulted in transgendered and gender nonconforming persons being treated unfavourably by criminalising their gender expression and gender identity.

Justice Anderson in his judgment was quoted as say-

ing that the law wrongly sought to criminalise a person’s state of mind as there is no test to determine what is an “improper purpose”. Justice Anderson in a separate decision noted that forms of dress by themselves are not objectionable and that “the essence of the crime … appears to consist … entirely of the state of mind of the persons engaged in otherwise perfectly innocent conduct”. He concluded that “our jurisprudence properly accepts that intentions by themselves are not constitutionally the proper subject of the criminal law”.

The Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), which was initially struck out of the case by CCJ, has nevertheless been fully behind the legal change.

Its Managing Director, Joel Simpson hailed the decision as “a clarion call to engage State actors on how the law engenders social and economic exclusion of disadvantaged

groups.

First-named litigant and co-founder of Guyana Trans United (GTU), McEwan, noted that “the whole trans community in Guyana is very happy”.

“I have always said that we should know what the law expects of us before we act and I am pleased that the court agreed that this law is vague.”

Persaud, another of the appellants, added, “We are always treated like trash.”

Lead counsel Douglas Mendes, SC, described the judgment as one that “will be acknowledged as a significant contribution to Caribbean jurisprudence, especially because of its insistence on the need to give due respect to everyone’s humanity”. Both the Appeal Court and High Court in Guyana had ruled against changing the cross-dressing laws, as several Caribbean countries remain uncertain about making the CCJ their final court.

agenham amp Redbridge’s Elliot Bonds has received his first call to the Guyana Men’s National Squad as Neil Danns, Colin Nelson, and Marcel Barrington return for the CONCACAF Nations League qualifier with French Guiana in Cayenne on November 20, 2018.

Head Coach Michael Johnson has named a 21man squad, bringing together players based at clubs in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, England, the United States, Finland, and Portugal.

The squad commences its encampment for the fixture today in Suriname.

“This is a crucial match for the Golden Jaguars in our bid to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time in Guyana’s footballing history. We are taking a strong, balanced and talented squad with a great blend of local players and those plying their trade overseas,” said Head Coach Johnson.

“We are all 110 per cent focused on making Guyanese fans proud in Cayenne next week.”

Bonds, an 18-year-old midfielder, plays in England’s National League, the fifth tier of English football.

The squad includes US-based striker Emery Welshman, whose FC Cincinatti team will play Major League Soccer in 2019. Danns, Barrington and Nelson are also return-

ing after missing out on the CONCACAF Nations League qualifier against Barbados in September.

Guyana currently lie 11th in the CONCACAF Nations League qualification table, with four points from two games.

French Guiana are in 16th place.

The top 10 will qualify for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, while the top six will qualify for CONCACAF Nations League A alongside the United States, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras.

Teams placed 7th to 22nd will compete in CONCACAF Nations League B. Guyana’s final qualification match will be played against Belize at Leonora Stadium on March 23, 2019.

Anderson thrashes Kei Nishikori for 2nd win

evin Anderson is in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals after beating Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-0 6-1 to claim his second ATP Finals win.

The South African, 32, comfortably won the first set to love in just 32 minutes at the O2 Arena in London.

Anderson, ranked six in the world. broke again early in the second set and led 6-0 5-0 before Nishikori finally held serve.

ATP Finals debutant Anderson is top of Group Lleyton Hewitt.

He has not dropped a set after beating Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-3 7-6 (12-10) in his

opening match.

Nishikori had beaten an out-of-sorts Roger Federer 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 on Sunday and could still qualify for the last four.

Swiss world number three Federer - who is chasing a 100th career title - faces Thiem on Tuesday, not before 20:00 GMT. After beating a frustrated Federer on Sunday, Nishikori should have been full of confidence going into this match.

by Guyana Karate College (GKC) at the Transport Sports Club, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

Two of them are from the Juvenile Holding Centre while the other was recently placed under the preview of the Child Care and Protection Agency.

They had exceptional performances which resulted in one stepping up to second brown belt, while the other two received their yellow belts.

Defending champions Windies set to take on confident SA – Mohammed to play 100th T20I

outh Africa and West Indies have both registered victories in their first official matches of the Women’s World T20 2018 tournament.

The defending champions, West Indies destroyed Bangladesh on the back of Deandra Dottin’s five-wicket haul while South Africa cruised to victory against Sri Lanka by seven wickets in St Lucia.

West Indies will play South Africa today in Gros Islet, St Lucia at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium with the match scheduled for 20:00h.

These two teams were involved in a competitive One-Day International and T20 International series in

the Caribbean this year. The South African girls started the One-Day series against West Indies with a 40- run win at Bridgetown, Barbados. In the second ODI, the match was abandoned due to rain, but in the final ODI the Caribbean girls bounced back with a 115run win to level the threematch ODI series 1-1. Similarly, the T20 International fivematch series was levelled 2-2 with West Indies winning the first two matches and South Africa completing two successive victories after rain washed out the third match.

The leading South African batter in that series was Dane van Niekerk with 176 runs at an average of 88 inclusive of two half-centuries. She is currently ranked 12th in ODIs and 14th in T20Is. West Indies bowlers will

have to be consistent when bowling to van Niekerk as well as Lizelle Lee. The dangerous Lee is the wicketkeeper-batter who bats at the top of the order in fearless fashion. In ODIs, she is the number fiveranked batter. In South Africa’s bowling department, they will look to the experienced duo of Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp.

West Indies will continue to bank on their top players Stafanie Taylor and Dottin among other notable stars. Vice Captain Hayley Matthews Lizelle Lee has recently scored a century against the

South African bowling attack and she will be hoping to replicate such performance in the West Indies second match of this prestigious tournament. Natasha McLean, who is described as attacking and fearless by her skipper Stafanie Taylor, was very consistent against South Africa in the T20 series.

McLean racked up 160 runs in four innings with an exceptional average of 80.

The 30-yearold Anisa Mohammed, who did not get an opportunity to bowl in the first match against Bangladesh, will play her 100th T20 International match.

The spin queen has 113

wickets in the shortest format of the game and has three five-wicket hauls in T20Is on her curriculum vitae.

West Indies women and England women are among the teams that won the World T20 tournament in the past and they are expected to qualify for the semis in Group A. However, the recentlyconcluded series against West Indies showed that the South African team have improved in all aspects of the game and will continue to compete with the top teams (England and West Indies) to book a semifinal spot.

Rooney rejected chance of pre-World Cup farewell

ayne Rooney has defended the Football Association’s (FA) decision to grant him the chance of a farewell outing for England, saying he turned down the chance to do so before the World Cup to ensure the timing was right.

Rooney, England’s former captain and all-time leading goalscorer, is due to come on in the second half of Thursday’s friendly match with the United States at Wembley to win his 120th and final cap.

There has been some

criticism of the decision to grant the 33-year-old a special appearance, with his last outing for England coming two years ago, in the 3-0 win over Scotland in qualifying for Russia 2018.

But Rooney hopes to set a trend for England players being recognised for their careers, having discussed the best course of action with the FA over the past year.

“We were speaking for about 12 months over the different ideas and there was an opportunity to do the game before the World Cup, which I didn’t feel was right

and this we both felt was the right time,” he told a news conference.

“The players were preparing for the biggest tournament in football and personally I didn’t think it was right to get in the way of that.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinions. The most important thing is we both felt it was right, the players I’ve spoken to and the FA have spoken to agreed, and as a country we haven’t done anything like this before and I hope in 10, 15 years’ time we’re sat here for someone, say a Harry Kane, who could

possibly go on and get the goalscoring record, that it will happen again.

“It’ll be strange but something I’m looking forward to. I had my first training session [on Monday] and it was strange getting back in amongst the players but to run out at Wembley again will be something I’m extremely proud of, a special moment.”

Rooney, who says the final decision on him playing against USA was made after his DC United side exited the MLS play-offs this month, insists his outing will not be ruined if he fails to score.

“My message to Gareth [Southgate] was t o get what he wants out of the game and at some stage during the second half I can come on,” he said. “It’d be nice [to score] but the main thing is to obviously run out one last time and have the opportunity to thank the fans for the years I’ve played for them.

“It’s an important night to try to raise money for the children [through the Wayne Rooney Foundation], which I’m really close to. It is an important match for me and

Hayley Matthews to head back for another WBBL season at Hobart Hurricanes S

tar West Indian opener Hayley Matthews has cast her focus away from a home women’s World T20 to re-sign for Hobart Hurricanes.

The mainstay of Tasmania’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) lineup is set to return for a fourth season.

The 20-year-old favourite, who joined as a young teenage talent, used words like “home” and “family” to describe how easy the decision was to recommit again.

“I’m very excited to be rejoining the Hurricanes for WBBL|04,” she said in a statement from the Caribbean.

“I’ve had three fantastic years with the team growing, learning so much and enjoying playing cricket among the group.

“Hobart is a very special place to me now – almost like a second home. “ T h e Hurricanes

runs in BBL|02 and 297 runs the next season.

Mahaica Determinators, Pouderoyen live to fight another day M a h a i c a Determinators FC and Pouderoyen FC gifted themselves another shot at the $800,000 spoils of the Turbo knockout tournament after eliminating their opponents.

The third night of action got off to a thrilling start on Monday evening when Pouderoyen met with Buxton Stars at the Ministry of Education Ground in a one-sided affair.

Pouderoyen wasted no time in giving themselves the upper hand, as they controlled ball possession in advantageous fashion. After a few attempts, the first goal came off the boots of Darrell Abrams in the 16th minute.

Even though Pouderoyen had the momentum, the remainder of the half was a hard-fought battle for a goal, but neither side was successful.

Marvin Griffith opened the second half with Pouderoyen’s second goal, thus putting his team in cruise control. Twenty minutes later, Ashley Harding made it a trio of goals, making a Buxton comeback even more difficult. Buxton Stars did not even have a chance to reply to Pouderoyen’s dominance, hence suffering a 3-0 loss.

The second match of the night featured Fruta Conquerors’ Under-20 team and the Mahaica Determinators. The youngsters put up a tough defence against the experienced

East Coast side and expertly diverted several attempts, but slipped up once when Kwon Giddings pierced the goal in the 27th minute to register Mahaica’s first goal.

Little did both sides know, this slip would cost Fruta Conquerors the game as Giddings’ goal was the winning one owing to Fruta Conquerors’ inability to find an equaliser.

Buxton Stars and Fruta Conquerors have now joined Western Tigers Under-20, Buxton United Under-20, Beacon FC and Pele FC who have all been eliminated.

On the other hand, Police, Santos, Riddim Squad and Northern Rangers have advanced to the next round of competition.

Annandale maintain top spot in Guyoil tourney

nnandale Secondary continue to show that they are fierce contenders in the Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers Under-18 football tournament as the East Coast youths registered yet another win on Monday afternoon.

For their round 7 battle, Annandale met with the struggling Marian Academy for a thrilling encounter. Marian Academy did not allow themselves to be intimidated by the dominance that Annandale have displayed thus far, which made for an exciting first half. Both teams went back and forth in the goal hunt, which saw Marian’s defence working expertly to fend off Annandale’s many attempts.

The first half ended with the score deadlocked on nil all.

However, Annandale scripted their second half differently as their captain, Jamar Harrigon stepped up

to the plate to deliver for his team. The skilled youngster took a long shot at the goal, which connected in the 37th minute. Feeding off of this momentum, Sean Haywood quickly took the score to 2-0 after netting his goal just two

The rest of regulation time expired with Marian Academy looking to secure a goal and although they were close at times, the private institution had to accept defeat at the sound of the final whis-

tle.

This win means that Annandale will remain tied on points with Lodge Secondary, as they both sit at the top of the table. Lodge, however, hold a goal difference advantage.

The second match of the evening, saw Charlestown Secondary getting some redemption after languishing at the bottom of the points table for weeks.

Playing with a full contingent against an incomplete St Rose’s side, Charlestown showed that indeed they have what it takes to come out on top. Although there were special provisions for St Rose’s, Charlestown got their scoring started as early as the eighth minute when Raymond Bandhu connected with the goal. Two minutes later, Bandhu was celebrating again as the score was pushed to 2-0. Carlos Agard was next to join the scoring party with his first goal in the 13th minute. He was followed by Isaiah Moore and Tariq Pryce, who contributed one each to the tally. Bandhu finished off his hat-trick in the 24th minute,

leaving Charlestown’s halftime tally at 6 to zero.

The St Rose’s side came out more determined in the second half, but the team were clearly missing the adrenaline and skill of their top striker as many passes within the box went unanswered, resulting in them being unable to net a goal.

Agard’s work, however, was not yet finished as the young man completed his hattrick with two goals in the 44th and 48th minutes to get Charlestown an emphatic 8-0 victory.

Charlestown will be happy with their performance, since this large-margin win will clear up their once- negative goal difference.

The eighth round of Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers action will commence on Sunday with fixtures being released in a timely manner.

Susanna Dinnage named new chief executive S usanna Dinnage has been named as the new chief executive of the Premier League, replacing Richard Scudamore.

Dinnage joins from media organisation Discovery, where she was the global president of the Animal Planet channel.

Scudamore, 59, is stepping down next month after 19 years at the helm.

"I am excited at the prospect of taking on this fantastic role. The Premier League means so much to so many people," said Dinnage, who

will begin her new job early in 2019.

"It represents the pinnacle of professional sport and the opportunity to lead such a dynamic and inspirational organisation is a great privilege. "With the support of clubs and the team, I look forward to extending the success of the league for many years to come."

Dinnage will become just the third person to lead the Premier League, after Scudamore and his predecessor Rick Parry.

Javeria Khan gets under a delivery during her match-winning 74

akistan won their first match of the tournament with a 38-run win against Ireland at the National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.

Pakistan Captain Javeria Khan led from the front with a superb knock of 74, then the bowlers easily defended a target of 140 restricting Ireland to 101-9 in their full quota of 20 overs.

Opting to bat first under scintillating sunshine, Pakistan openers made their way to the crease looking to post a decent target. Nahida Khan and Ayesha Zafar were watch-

ful in their approach until Ireland got their first wicket in the fifth over. Nahida Khan was out caught by Gabby Lewis with the score on 16. The Pakistan batters managed 20 runs in the first six overs, but pushed the run rate in the latter part of the innings. After the first wicket fell, the Pakistan Captain appeared at the middle with the intention of batting throughout the innings. The innovative Javeria Khan used her feet on various occasions to hit the Irish bowlers for boundaries and also invented room to play the ball through the off-side.

third wicket. Sohail was out caught on the boundary for a supportive 18.

Javeria Khan reached her half-century with an empathic four, chipping downwards slogging the ball into the wide long-on boundary. She took a liking to the Irish leg-spinner, Celeste Raack in the 17th over, smashing three consecutive boundaries soon after her half-century. In Pakistan’s first five overs, they scored 17 runs in contrast to 48 runs scored in the final five overs. Lucy O’Reilly bowled a brilliant 20th over conceding only four runs as Pakistan concluded their innings of 1396 in 20 overs. Javeria Khan ended unbeaten with her splendid 74 from 52 balls, including 11 boundaries.

Zafar and Sohail contributed 21 and 18 respectively. Ireland’s opening bowler, O’Reilly, was the pick of the bowlers with 3-19 in her four overs inclusive of one maiden over. Raack and Ciara Metcalfe ended with one wicket each.

The experienced Irish opener Clare Shillington once more produced a decent start for her team as is required to complete a successful run chase.
