AFC Councillor jailed for 18 months E

mbattled Alliance For Change (AFC) Councillor, Abel Seetaram, who was last month found guilty of feloniously wounding his cousin following a drinking spree, was on Wednesday jailed for 18 months.

The 36-year-old of Lot 121 B Woodley Park Village, West Coast Berbice had initially denied the allegation when he appeared before Magistrate Rhondel Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court in January last.

He was found guilty of wounding Netram Rabindranauth, 54, of Lot 64 Woodley Park Village on January 21, 2018.

The AFC Councillor was said to have used a piece of wood to injure Rabindranauth during an altercation after a drinking spree.

victim of the attack had told Guyana Times that he had intervened in an argument and scuffle between Seetaram’s son and his son in order to make peace and part them.

Rabindranauth recalled

that it was at this point that Seetaram arrived on the scene and dealt him several blows with the piece of wood.

Both men took their sons to the Police station and made reports after which the young men were held

for questioning and subsequently released.

Rabindranauth also reported that he had to be taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital after he sustained a broken jaw, fractured nose, and suffered internal bleeding which also saw him being transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

At the scene of the confrontation, Seetaram, who was reportedly intoxicated, was heard shouting and telling persons who had gathered that no one could do him anything, since he knows “Khemraj” and is a “big boy in the Government”.

Following the guilty decision in May, Attorney for Seetaram had begged for leniency and had requested a probation report.

Seetaram was allowed to return to his home instead of being remanded until his sentencing as is with the case of other persons who

are found guilty of criminal offences.

On Wednesday, the report was presented by Probation and Welfare Officer attached to the Social Protection Ministry, Patricia Pompey. In her report, the Probation Officer stated that this is Seetaram’s third matter before the court.

She said residents when asked about Seetaram said he was a quiet person but when under the influence of alcohol, becomes aggressive and outrageous. In her report to the court, the Probation Officer noted resident’s fear of Seetaram when he is drunk, saying that he needs anger management and should act in a more responsible manner.

She said they (the residents) were not surprised

that he was in court, noting that on one occasion he exposed his private parts to the public.

Meanwhile, Attorney Horatio Edmonson in a plea of mitigation asked the court to exercise mercy and leniency, noting that Seetaram is a father of six with the youngest being 10-monthsold and is the sole breadwinner for the family.

Edmonson argued that the probation report referred to Seetaram as being a hardworking and industrious person, which are attributes needed in the society and as such asked for a non-custodial sentence. He noted that the Virtual Complainant (VC) and Seetaram are cousins.

However, in handing down the sentence, Magistrate Weaver said Seetaram should have exercised restraint. She noted that Rabindranauth had gone as a peacemaker between his son and Seetaram’s son; however, Seetaram came as an aggressor.

Magistrate Weaver said Seetaram did not consider the consequences of his actions. She noted that he was previously charged and convicted, and the nature of the offences has been escalating.

Considering the facts, she said a custodial sentence is warranted and imposed the 18-month jail term.

Teen nabbed with gun, ammo

n 18-year-old Charlestown resident was on Wednesday afternoon nabbed in Albouystown, Georgetown with an unlicensed firearm.

Reports are the teen, of Howes and Charles Streets, Charlestown, Georgetown, was seen by ranks on patrol acting in a suspicious manner.

As such, he was stopped and searched. An unlicensed .32 pistol with a live round was found concealed in his crotch.

He was taken into Police custody and was being processed for court.

On Saturday last, ranks swooped down at Wild Lang Mission, Potaro, Essequibo and found concealed under a shed a single-barrel 12-gauge shotgun and a .38 revolver.

Twenty-two live 12-gauge cartridges, 14 empty 12-gauge casings and a shotgun stock were also found.

However, an arrest is yet to be made for that find.

Ali calls for Guyoil to reduce fuel prices

n presenting several arguments as to why the Government should move swiftly to reduce the Excise Tax on petroleum products, thereby creating a reduction in the price for fuel at the pumps, Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) Irfaan Ali said if this is not done, it could have severe repercussions.

Ali believes that Guyanese continue to pay for what he described as the gross incompetence of the coalition Government. “If the price of fuel does not reduce, the spillover effect of a rise in inflation, and unemployment is imminent… None of this would have occurred, had the Amaila Hydro been in place.”

According to the former People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government Minister, public enterprises, with the exception of the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) have registered huge budget deficits since 2015 and seen massive reductions in deposits at commercial banks.

Therefore, Ali contended that the needed reduction in the price of fuel could be accommodated by Guyoil. However, he said, a unilateral reduction without the ease of Excise Tax by the Government, to benefit private service stations, will be counterproductive since there will be an unlevelled playing field.

“Thus, the Government first needs to ease Excise Tax on fuel importation, followed by a reduction in fuel price by Guyoil. Given the market share of Guyoil, other private service stations will follow,” he added.

In making several key observations, the Opposition MP said at present, global oil price is the same compared to November 2008.

However, price of local gas stations in November 2008 is less than present by 15.5 per cent at $194. Global oil price in January 2015 (under the previous Administration) and September 2017 was same.

However, the 2015 price is less by 15.1 per cent at $173.

At same level of global oil price, the price of fuel under the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Government was significantly less when compared to that of the A Partnership for National Unity/ Alliance For Change (APNU/ AFC) Government.

Ali also noted that Guyoil benefited substantially, post 2015, from low market prices of oil. He therefore explained that if the projected $3 billion after-tax profit was achieved by end of 2017, total profit generated by Guyoil during the last three years would exceed 20082014 total level, by more than 10 per cent.

“By not reducing local fuel price in relation to global oil price since 2015, Guyoil was able to increase its profit margin significantly. Given Guyoil’s high profit margin, the company could afford, presently, to reduce fuel price and ease growing economic burden,” he added.

Impact Whatever Government choses to do will have an impact on the economy and Guyanese at large. The MP said with a price

Further, it could also impact low production levels, as rice farmers, loggers, small and medium-scale miners, could see a reduction in level of output, as fuel price increases higher production cost, adding downward pressure on profit margin, could see downsize in operation.

But what was most worrying of all is the fact that this could impact the increased level of unemployment. As operation shrinks, the demand for employment will fall. Hence, higher unemployment level.

Amaila Meanwhile, Ali did not fail to mention the Amaila Falls Hydro Project for which the coalition Government quashed for what the PPP has long argued was mainly because of “political vindictiveness.”

However, the former Minister has long argued that Guyanese are being robbed of cheap and

more reliable electricity.

Ali said had the project been in place, it would most likely have resulted in the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) reducing its generation cost by approximately 50 per cent. It would have also allow Guyana to avoid importing approximately US$200 million in fuel per annum.

Instead, Ali said that project would have brought price stability of local fuel, as the current global oil price volatility would have had less impact

or effect on domestic fuel price.

It would have led to increased production, which would have resulted in cheaper electricity would translate into lower production cost. “Hence, less cost would have increased competitiveness among local manufacturers and possibly lead to an increase in export. It would have reduced cost of imports, increasing foreign exchange due to savings would mean appreciation of domestic currency…reduced cost of import, increased purchasing power.”

Enmore Martyrs: 70 years later

une 16, 2018 will mark 70 years since the shooting to death of five sugar workers at Enmore, East Coast Demerara. The five – Rambarran, Pooran, Lallabagee, Surajballi and Harry – became known as the Enmore Martyrs following their deaths on June 16, 1948. Martyrs, by its definition, connotes the ultimate sacrifice that one selflessly makes generally for the betterment of others and country. In this case, these martyrs paid with their dear lives for the cause to better working conditions for sugar workers.

The arduous task of harvesting cane manually is well known.

One of the workers’ contentions was the added burden of having to cut the cane, to then loading it into punts some distance away (referred to as the “cut and load” system). This back-breaking method, which was introduced in 1945, was clearly unpopular with the workers who demanded that it be replaced with “cut and “drop”; they cut and others load.

At the time, social and economic conditions were less than desirable. That saddled workers with poor wages and living conditions on the estates. They also wanted, the then, Guyana Industrial Workers Union, (GIWU), to be recognised as the union to bargain for them. In their minds, these were justifiable demands and having been unable to have them met, they naturally resorted to strike action in April of 1948.

The use of scabs to fill the void the strike created did not resolve the sugar producers’ dilemma. As production became seriously affected, they introduced drastic measures in an effort to force the striking workers to comply. Having felt betrayed by the union that represented them, the Man Power Citizen’s Association, (MPCA), the situation exacerbated and ultimately led to what transpired on that fateful day of June 16, 1948.

The context of that incident must not be lost. They were simple workers who unselfishly stood up to the ‘massas’ demanding that their welfare not be ignored. After all, they were contributing significantly to the enrichment of the masters who seemed totally unconcerned of the plight the workers were forced to endure.

Had those striking workers been successful through the actions they took, all would have benefited from the much desired improvement of conditions.

Tragically, they paid with their lives and it resonated across the country. That incident was not just a pivotal moment in our nation’s history for what had happened, but what it eventually led to in the context of our politics. It profoundly impacted a young Dr Cheddi Jagan. The strikes, prior to the shooting, were supported by the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), which he and his wife, Janet, were founders. They helped to raise funds and operated soup kitchens to assist the striking workers and their families.

The deaths of the five workers touched him in many ways and at the gravesite on the day of their funerals, he silently pledged to dedicate his life to the cause of the Guyanese people; to free them from bondage and exploitation. It was that pledge that propelled and guided him in his relentless struggles for an independent Guyana and championing the rights of workers. He founded the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in 1950 which led subsequent struggles culminating in the return to democracy in 1992.

While the five workers died during their quest for betterment, their sacrifices further heightened awareness of what they were experiencing, galvanised sentiments, fuelled hope and helped to intensify the struggle not just for improved working conditions for sugar workers, but for all Guyanese. However, following their struggles for advancement on the sugar belt, 70 years after, one can venture to question the seeming erosion of the value of their sacrifices by the powers that be.

Within the past two years, a number of sugar estates were closed, plunging thousands of workers into unemployment.

The callous manner in which it was done without any apparent consideration for impact assessment studies and alternative employment, was interpreted as been uncaring to the workers and the dire circumstances it created. As it is, these unemployed workers continue to experience tremendous difficulties to provide for their families including the provision of education for children.

The social impact of this mass termination continues to ripple across and beyond the sugar belt crippling local economies and drastically reversing the gains made in living standards. Many families are hard-pressed to provide three basic but modest meals per day as pressure mounts on the recognised breadwinner. While the scenarios may be different to what transpired 70 years ago, there are frightening similarities foremost being the struggle for a better life and to adequately provide for families.

Today, the harsh reality is that thousands of affected sugar workers daily face a monumental task to provide as uncertainty and despondency engulfs to the point of strangulation. Given what is unfolding now, not just for sugar workers, but for all who are further burdened by the continually worsening economic situation and as quality of life declines, the question of whether the Enmore Martyrs’ sacrifices are in vain, seems apt for debate. While such sacrifices are always valued and epitomises a beacon of hope and pillars of strength, the answers of the workers currently affected, may unavoidably be a foregone conclusion. Déjà vu?

Rodney a fighter for unity, justice and dignity (Pt 2) Dear Editor, Once more we are seeing racism being used as a policy of the State under this A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) regime.

Discrimination is a tool of promoting and keeping people divided. Immediately on taking power hundreds of Indian Guyanese in the public service have been fired. The public service has been practically cleansed of Guyanese Indian origins.

The same has happened in all the public corporations and other constitutional offices. Even the Judiciary seems to bending in the direction of the dictatorship.

The People’s National Congress (PNC), now APNU, has not lost its hate of Walter Rodney.

One of the first things it did in 2015 was to halt the International Commission of Inquiry into the assassination of Rodney. Not much more was left to be done, but they stopped it.

Many of Rodney’s ex-comrades, who still pay lip service to his work, have

become the new oppressors; they have joined forces and are part of parcel of the corruption and discrimination taking place. Unlike Rodney, for them and the PNC, a black dictatorship is better than a democratically elected Government and this was passed down to high-ranking Army and Police Officers.

Some of them even, very skillfully, try to show him as a violent person. Now we are being told he was amassing arms. The message here is that Burnham had a right to kill him.

In March of 1980, Walter Rodney, Eusi Kwayana and Rupert Roopnaraine held a press conference in which they handed out two documents. One claimed that the PNC took delivery of weapons from the Guyana Defence Force on behalf of the House of Israel and the other claimed that orders for the assassination of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) members.

In that same press conference, they all denied the allegations that the WPA

was engaged in a conspiracy of violence.

What was really happening was the PNC was preparing a case to murder Rodney. The propaganda was being used to poison Guyanese people’s minds to prepare them for June 13, 1980. Unfortunately, the comments of Rupert Roopnaraine recently has given some credibility to the nasty propaganda that the PNC used against his party at that time.

The PNC racist element will never forgive Rodney.

They are victims of their own propaganda. His unmasking of the PNC racism was done clinically and the racial card they used against the People’s Progressive Party was ineffective against him.

That hatred persists to this day. This regime not only prevented the Rodney Commission from completing its work, but they have not made public the report of the work that was completed. They have locked it away, continuing to try to hide their bloody hands.

Those ex-comrades of

Rodney who are now prominent in the new racist and oppressive offensive should really take time to evaluate their own positions. Many are as bad as, or even worse than, the PNCites. They have become beneficiaries of a corrupt and racist state.

Rodney’s life was short but meaningful and productive. He will always be remembered as a champion of the poor and powerless. His all-round intellectual work sought to liberate the minds of colonial peoples generally and black peoples in particular.

His message to the African Guyanese masses today would most likely have been to urge them not to be used by the PNC again to go against their own interests for racial satisfaction. Instead, to unite with all progressive and democratically-minded Guyanese to halt the drift to dictatorship and give dignity to all our people.

Did Mr Chin exhaust all efforts for a meeting with Govt?

Dear Editor, Owners of the MovieTowne mall are complaining of the red tape in getting business done.

This news is not good for promoting an enabling investment climate.

Notwithstanding that this project was initiated under the former Government and that the land might have been sold to Chin below market price, the current Government should not

frustrate, or allow its agencies to frustrate the process.

Jobs are going to be created here and Guyana's entertainment and food options will enjoy international brands.

What the current Government should have been doing is talking to Chin about investing with small farmers, with Government, with small manufacturers in ventures that are needed to support the operations of the

complex. Most of the food being offered at this complex should be sourced locally through a reliable supply arrangement that would ensure the required quality of vegetables, plantains, fruit, eggs, meat, peppers etc. I would like to suggest to the Government that it immediately enter into discussion with Chin to move this project along, while encouraging him to look at putting in place mechanisms to pro-

vide for local farmers/manufacturers to be contract suppliers of quality produce and products.

Is the Guyana Chronicle so desperate Race and alleged discrimination: to justify the GECOM Chairman’s responsible handling of this issue action that it lies blatantly?

Dear Editor, I read with alarm the report published by the Guyana Chronicle on June 13, 2018, headlined ‘PPP frets after candidate loses out on GECOM post’.

The report says: “Back in 2016, Persaud was accused of being corrupt. It was alleged that despite having a Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) at the time, Persaud carried out some of that officer’s duties during the last elections. Sources within the Commission had told the Guyana Chronicle that Persaud took charge of all civic and voter education responsibilities despite their falling within the ambit of the PRO… in 2014, Persaud while appointed as DCEO, wrote and signed documents as the enti-

ty’s Public Relations Officer.

In documents seen by this publication, Persaud had signed as PRO and DCEO.” Editor, the fact is Persaud was GECOM’s Public Relations Officer. He was appointed the Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO) on August 12, 2014. A report in the very Guyana Chronicle, dated August 13, 2014, headlined ‘Vishnu Persaud GECOM’s new DCEO/ DCNR’, makes this fact clear.

At the time of his appointment, the vacancy of Public Relations Officer had not been filled. He acted in the post until someone was appointed.

So obviously, in 2014, there would have been documents released by Persaud where he either signed as PRO (ag) and DCEO. Is the Guyana Chronicle so

desperate to defend the unilaterally appointed GECOM Chairman, Justice (retired) James Patterson, that it tells blatant lies?

Lies will not distort the facts.

The fact is Persaud was the number-one ranked candidate for the post of DCEO, after an evaluation by a four-person panel (two PNCR and two PPP/C nominated Commissioners). The fact is that the unilaterally appointed GECOM Chairman in using his casting vote to reject the number-one ranked candidate also rejected the principles of meritocracy and fairness, which should guide the hiring process of any institution, more so GECOM. Dear Editor, Permit me space in your newspaper to comment on an issue, which if not handled properly by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), could become an unnecessary issue about race and alleged discrimination.

On the face of it, the People’s Progressive Party Commissioners at GECOM could perhaps be genuinely forgiven for believing that Vishnu Persaud’s race had played the greatest part in him not being selected as the Deputy Chief Elections Officer; a post I am aware he had held for a number of years during the Steve Surujbally era.

But from what I know, there had been much discontent with his handling of voter education exercises and programmes during the time Persaud had worked both as

the deputy chief and as the public relations insider at GECOM. He was the one responsible for voter education and could have done a better job while he was at it. I think Commissioners who had been in place for a while would have noted questions about his performance and would have leaned towards voting against him as they did.

They also might have briefed Chairman James Patterson about this, hence the fact that he threw in his casting vote to settle the issue, albeit amid a cloud of suspicion about race playing the major part in his rejection. This is a rather unfortunate development.

I therefore sincerely hope that a way could be found to indicate to the general public that there are issues other than race pertaining to Persaud not getting the nod from the three

People’s National Congress Commissioners and the Chairman. I make a case for responsible handling of this issue because this proverbial albatross of race which hangs around the neck of the Guyanese society, needs no more fuel to ignite racial insecurities and anxieties.

Given his vast experience and familiarity with operations at GECOM, I make a bold suggestion for him to be retained in a consultative capacity given the enormous level of preparations required for Local Government Elections and the General Elections in 2020. He could do no harm if he is so retained and such a move on the part of those at the agency could help to ease lingering suspicions about the motive for not picking him.

There must be a fair playing field in debates Dear Editor, There must be a fair playing field in the debates that have an impact on all of Guyana. I say this because there seems to be a trend where there are standards that some people are demanded to meet, while others are given a pass.

Lincoln Lewis’ letter in sections of the media on June 11, 2018, is one issue that backs up this point. Lewis argues that Robeson Benn must produce evidence to back up

his claim that the hiring done at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is not done based on merit. Does he have evidence to disprove this? Is he deliberately ignoring that GECOM itself has not produced evidence to disprove this?

This is not an issue of race. This is about merit.

Why do some people have to be tested twice, if they pass the first test, when others do not? These are facts that are not hard to verify. Is this

why some people are trying to make it a race issue? Because they want to change the conversation to something that is historically contentious?

Editor, Lewis also makes it a point to say that the majority of the staff employed are GECOM are AfroGuyanese, some 46 per cent of those employed. But he ignores the controversial nature of this statistic itself.

The Department of Public Information, last week, quoted GECOM Commissioner,

Vincent Alexander, saying that GECOM does not record the ethnicities of the staff it employs. So where did the 46 per cent come from? Was Alexander being dishonest?

The fact is that the GECOM Chairman, Justice (retired) James Patterson, talked about this 46 per cent twice already, in the Kaieteur News and in the Stabroek News over the weekend. Is the repetition of the 46 per cent line proof that Alexander was not being honest? But this is an

Dear Editor, As time unfolds the truth, it becomes pellucid that the unilateral appointment of Justice (retired) Patterson as the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) Chairman is cloaked with ulterior designs and if there is one thing that President Granger has inherited from the late LFS Burnham, it is the art of rigging elections and the building of a strong foundation for dictatorial rule.

The President miserably failed to address the content and intent Article 161 of the Constitution and the 25 years of precedent created by the Carter-Price Formula.

His action in so doing has signalled the People’s National Congress’ (PNC) intention to

return to the 28 years of dictatorial rule and thrust this Nation back to the dark era of PNC misrule.

The hasty midnight appointment of the GECOM’s Chairman is symbolic of the looming darkness which President Granger intends to enshroud this nation and the tricks and deception which become characteristic of this coalition rule. There are six GECOM Commissioners and three are elected by the Opposition and three by the Government, so if there is a tie in any decision-making then the Chairman breaks that tie. This was the intention of Granger. Will the Chairman of GECOM act against the instructions of the man who appointed him?

It is a known and accepted fact that the President never intended that the GECOM Chairman should be impartial but was appointed to do his biddings.

Patterson wasted no time in carrying out the wishes of his master. The rejection of the appointment of the top-ranking applicant, Vishnu Persaud for the position of the Deputy CEO of GECOM bears testimony to the racial discrimination and the biasness which has taken a stranglehold on the Elections Commission thereby sending a strong message that free and fair elections in Guyana is under severe threat. This is even more glaring when the second-ranked applicant who is of African descent is appoint-

ed by the GECOM Chairman.

The statement made by Transparency International Guyana in 2017 that democracy in under threat by the unilateral appointment of the GECOM Chairman is becoming real as GECOM kicks into gear.

It is an undeniable fact that all the elections from 1968, 1973, 1980, and 1985 were massively rigged as well as the 1978 referendum and President Granger’s machinations to attempt to rig the LGE and the 2020 General Elections are now set in motion!

This is a fact. But nowhere, at least up to now, has Chin been accused of any wrongdoing. My understanding of the charges brought so far against the two former Government operatives are not for receiving cutbacks or any bribes from Chin or anyone else. There is no injunction, or application for an injunction before the Court to halt this project.

Unless and/or until Chin is alleged, let alone

is charged with having been involved in any corrupt act concerning this project, the Government of Guyana must continue to facilitate through discussion and negotiation, in keeping with the agreement he has signed, the development of this investment. He signed an agreement with the Government of Guyana, not the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.

If on the other hand, the Government has suspicion

or evidence of wrongdoing on Chin’s part, then it should so inform him.

It is no secret that governments around the world, including Guyana under President Hoyte sold land and distressed companies to investors below market value so as to save and modernise those companies. The incentives offered is usually dependent on the level of investment to be made and the contribution of the activity to the socio-economic develop-

ment including job creation.

Many countries have also amended their Alien Land Holding Act to facilitate foreign investment especially for hotel development and large-scale manufacturing.

I find it unfortunate that this issue has to play out in the media. Did Chin and the Private Sector Commission exhaust all efforts for a meeting with the Government?

Back to the issue of Lewis’ call for evidence, I submit that he is setting standards for other people; standards he has failed to meet. Where is the evidence to support his claim that Afro-Guyanese were worse off under the last Government? Where is his evidence to show comparative numbers for land/and home ownership, business ownership or comparative number for any other areas where Afro-Guyanese, like all other Guyanese, benefited and improved their standard of living?

We also cannot forget that Lewis joined the bandwagon of those making wild charges about Afro-Guyanese having died, as a result of extra-ju-

dicial killings under the last Government. But he did not say anything when the very list of 400 Afro-Guyanese was reviewed and when the very list exposed the lies being told. That list had the names of Police Officers, Army officers, civilians, businesspeople and even criminals – people of all race.

Where is the list of 400 innocent Afro-Guyanese men who were killed? Why has Lewis failed to substantiate something he subscribes too?

In calling for constructive and structured means of addressing issues, Lewis exposes the fact that he has failed in this very regard.

he critical point is that the human being has evolved as a multimechanism system in which each mechanism is at once incomplete but essential to the functioning of the system as a whole.”

This revolution has tremendous potential for enhancing development.

This perspective – combining feeling, thinking, and talking – can help us address some of the problems confronting our society today. Also, notably, nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory fit into our exploration of development.

Checks and balances In understanding ourselves – that is, how we become who we are – we might do well to look at the three major systems involved in human development – emotions, cognition, and language.

All three of these possess major assets.

Interestingly, all have major liabilities.

Emotions provide motivation, but they also can be mislabelled, misunderstood, and repressed. Cognition allows for selfreflection and thinking about actions, but it is also plagued by misperceptions and faulty memory. Language leads to symbolization and shareability, but also can create misinterpretations.

Are we blind to feelings?

This is the story of how we still do not see or understand or accurately label feelings. It is the story of how our society focuses on behaviour rather than on the feelings which cause the behaviour.

It is the story of how feelings motivate behaviour, and how we still have not genuinely grasped that. It is about our struggle to understand the working of feelings in our close relationships and in general human interactions.

An eExample from the past: Germ Theory Now we switch scenes dramatically. We go back to the late 1600s. A man from the

Netherlands has developed a technique to create magnifying lenses and has made primitive microscopes: his name is Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723). He could see protozoa, bacteria, blood cells, even wriggling spermatozoa. He called the live little creatures “animalcules” (Lehrer, 1979).

Much earlier, in 1546, a man named Girolamo Fracastoro of Verona wrote a book called De Contagione in which he suggested that living particles were responsible for some diseases; and in 1658 Athanasius Kircher hypothesised that “small living animals invisible to the naked eye” spread contagious diseases (Nuland, 2003).

“Animalcules” and disease However, stunningly, our hero van Leeuwenhoek did not consider that these animalcules might have something to do with human disease processes. The concept of “spontaneous generation” held sway: life forms arose from their surroundings; various aspects of the atmosphere were responsible.

In the 1700s, Lazzara Spallanzani of Italy performed a series of experiments.

“The conclusion to be drawn from these experiments was inescapable: Living organisms were necessary for putrefaction. Spontaneous generation was a myth” (Lehrer, p. 113).

In the late 1700s, an Englishman named Jenner began realising that people who had the illness cowpox tended not to get the much more severe disease smallpox; and he actually began successfully inoculating people with cowpox material in order to prevent their developing smallpox. But, still, the connection between human disease and the animalcules was not made. Now we fast forward to the 1840s… about how many years since the late 1600s and van Leeuwenhoek’s discovery of the animalcules? Can it be over 150 years?! Our focus turns to a specific problem: women dying of childbed fever, or puerperal fever– ie events surrounding childbirth.

A Scottish physician, Alexander

Gordon, wrote about the contagious nature of this problem in the late 1700s; and, in America, a young physician named Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was suggesting some form of transmission by medical practitioners.

But the major player is an unusual young physician named Ignác Semmelweis (1818-1865), working in Vienna. He began to realise that high mortality rates occurred on wards where doctors and medical students went straight from the autopsy rooms to the birthing rooms.

In 1847, he began insisting the doctors and other medical attendants wash their hands before entering the birthing rooms.

The results were dramatic: the death rates dropped significantly! (Shortly afterward in 1854, John Snow, MD, similarly stopped a cholera epidemic by finding its source in London – thereby creating the modern science of epidemiology.)

The Germ Theory of Disease However – there is a however – it was not clear why the death rates dropped.

Controversy reigned. Semmelweis saved lives – but no one knew why hand-washing worked! Now – let’s not forget our friend Leeuwenhoek, who had observed his animalcules over 150 years before.

Nuland (2003) put it nicely: “Had Ignác Semmelweis so much as once asked the microscopist Joseph Hyrtl to study a drop of pus from one of the dead mothers, he would have found it to be teeming with the same kinds of organisms that Lister later found in his infected wounds. The invisible organic particles would have been shown to be bacteria. The leap of genius that had allowed Semmelweis to reach this astonishing insight was incalculable in its potential implications.

But just as incalculable was the power of obstinate blindness that stopped him at that very point … It would remain for others to identify the nature of lethal microorganisms…” (pages 180-1).

These “others” would come on the scene very shortly… and their names would be Pasteur, Lister, and Koch. (Excerpt

“W

hy is this taking so long? Every time I think I’m making progress, something comes up, I become totally undone, and I feel as though I am back at square one. Is this normal? Can you actually use the word ‘normal’ when you’re talking about a toxic childhood?”

I get messages like this all the time from daughters who are picking up the pieces and trying to get to a place of health after growing up in a family where their emotional needs weren’t met. I fully understand their frustration because I lived it; I spent close to twenty years of my adult life trying either to manage my relationship to my mother or to end it, neither with much success. Why is it that healing from childhood wounds seems like the world’s longest car trip, even if you go into therapy?

Understanding the influence of childhood

While we focus on healing from the parts of childhood we consciously remember – the feelings of fear or abandonment, the way we were marginalised or actively made to feel inadequate, how our feelings and thoughts were routinely dismissed, the terrible hunger we felt for love and support – the reality is that it’s the unconscious ways of thinking and reacting that require healing and stand in the way of our living our best lives. Experiences in infancy and babyhood (and later) aren’t consciously remembered but they are stored in our memories and are the impetus for the behaviours we develop, including our style of attachment. It’s hard to overstate the malleability and adaptability of the human infant, in truth; since evolution is focused on survival first and foremost, we adapt in whatever ways we need to.

And, of course, it’s not simply the child’s openness to influence; it’s the length of time involved which makes recovery that much more difficult to achieve, and why setbacks are part of the process of recovery. Unlearning is hard work, and requires you to be patient with yourself, which I totally understand is frustrating and difficult.

Why it takes so long to heal

There’s a metaphor I use in my book, Daughter Detox: Recovering from an Unloving Mother and Reclaiming Your Life, and I think it explains a great deal. While you vividly remember certain moments from childhood – they exert weight in your memory, either symbolically or literally, and involve significant emotional pain – there are hundreds, even thousands, of small interactions that you don’t. Each of these is light as a feather but added up, they influence the daughter’s behavioural landscape in literal ways. Like a steady stream of water on soil, these interactions create grooves and channels, unconscious and unseen, through which the daily events of adult life – in the here and now—are filtered, interpreted, and reacted to.

Our individual experiences create our individual channels and grooves. Having walked on eggshells or ducked for cover as children, we may approach the world in a defensive crouch, highly sensitive to slights and rejection. Or raised by a combative mother, we may always be looking for an edge, never able to truly be oneon-one with anyone. Or fearful that our inadequacies will show, we might become high achievers without ever really feeling the kind of self-reassurance successful endeavours bring to those who had loving childhoods.

Guyanese workforce being increased – ExxonMobil

U

nited States (US) oil giant ExxonMobil said it has made significant progress when it comes to increasing its local workforce, by creating opportunities for more Guyanese to join their team.

ExxonMobil's Country Manager, Rod Henson revealed that his company currently employs 585 or 52 per cent Guyanese. The company’s local office grew to 40 employees, of which 70 per cent are Guyanese, he said on Tuesday.

Henson made this statement while delivering remarks at the Liza Phase 1 Development reception on Tuesday evening, where he noted that things are progressing smoothly as they should.

In addition to that, Henson said Guyanese have joined the Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) team and are serving in several professional capacities.

These include facility engineers, materials management coordinator, management system coordinator, health and safety coordinator, and health and environment coordinator, among others.

Speaking briefly on local content, Henson said over US$14 million was spent on Guyanese suppliers.

Together with their contractors, the company has also utilised many local suppliers.

About 50 per cent of ExxonMobil’s employees, contractors, and subcontractors are Guyanese.

That is expected to grow.

ExxonMobil has also opened the Centre for Local Business Development here

to promote the establishment and growth of small and medium-sized local businesses.

In essence, Henson said his company has been able to grow local business capacity and has made huge investments into the local economy, through a series of strategic development policies.

Meanwhile, Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman recommitted to ensuring that Guyana gets the best out of the nascent oil sector, and will use it to develop the nation further.

The Minister also maintained that the renegotiated oil contract will benefit Guyana tremendously.

Following mounting pressure from the Opposition, the Government through the Department of Public Information (DPI) reported that ExxonMobil utilised the services of 309 companies last year.

Opposition Bharrat Jagdeo was the most recent person to make calls for Government to release the names of the local companies that ExxonMobil has utilised the services of.

The report said for 2018, the oil giant also utilised the services of approximately 227 local suppliers.

However, Government has, so far, only released the list of local suppliers for 2018.

Among other things, ExxonMobil had said it “submits the list of companies to the Government on a quarterly basis,” while outlining that the “Government can verify the list and or attest to the public that we do in fact submit the data to the Government. Or the Government can choose to disclose the list.”

While stakeholders were optimistic that the oil giant was utilising hundreds of local businesses, many had called for the names of the over 300 companies to be divulged.

The Opposition Leader even said he found it “surprising that ExxonMobil has been relaying information to the coalition Government, on a quarterly basis, given the reticence of this Administration when it comes to keeping the Guyanese public informed of the developments in the oil and gas sector.”

Guyana, Cuba to enhance bilateral relations

– President accepts invitation to visit Cuba

resident David Granger and Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Sierra Diaz, who is currently on an official visit to Guyana committed to enhancing the relations between the two countries through increased collaboration and cooperation in areas such as health, environmental conservation, disaster management and tourism.

President Granger also accepted an invitation from the President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel to visit his country at a date to be determined.

During the meeting held at State House, President Granger said since establishing diplomatic ties on December 8, 1972, Guyana and Cuba have enjoyed a strong friendship based on shared trust, respect and mutual understanding.

In this regard, Minister Diaz said that the two Governments are in discus-

sions to see how best the health cooperation, which exists between the two countries, can be best improved for mutual benefit.

On this note, President Granger said that as Guyana forges ahead with the pursuit of a ‘green’ economy, the country is looking to establish cooperation in the areas of environmental protection and conservation and tourism. He noted that this level of cooperation is of vital importance to advancing Guyana’s green agenda and overall economic development.

The Minister noted that Cuba is ready to lend whatever assistance it can in this area as they have already implemented stringent environmental conservation and protection measures and policies in their country, which could be used as a study for Guyana.

Following the meeting, the Minister paid hom-

age to the victims of the Cubana Air Disaster with the laying of a wreath at the Monument to the Victims of Terrorism at the University of Guyana campus. He also paid a visit to the Centre for the Stimulation of Children, Adolescents and Youth with Special Educational Needs Associated with Disabilities at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).

In 1972, Guyana led efforts by Caribbean states to break the diplomatic isolation of Cuba in this hemisphere; establishing diplomatic relations with that country.

The Deputy Foreign Minister also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, the Director-General and other officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs among other officials.

The official visit to Guyana will conclude today.

Father, son charged for murder of fruit vendor

A

father and son were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Wednesday charged for the murder of 20-year-old fruit vendor Richard Noel.

The men – 54-year-old James McKenzie and his son, 20-year-old Timothy McKenzie, both of Lot 126 Thomas Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

It is being alleged that on June 4, 2018, at Stabroek Market, Georgetown, both men murdered Noel, of Lot 39 William Street, Kitty.

The men were remanded to prison. The case will continue on June 29, 2018.

Reports are the murder reportedly stemmed from an old grievance

between the now dead man and the younger McKenzie.

The grievance involved the sister of Noel, who the younger McKenzie had reportedly hit, and that resulted in a fight between the two men.

However, on the day of the murder, the men reportedly crossed paths and McKenzie was heard asking Noel if he “wanted a problem”.

Noel reportedly walked away, which allegedly aggravated the father-son pair, who immediately went after him and allegedly stabbed him twice to his chest. When Noel fell, the men reportedly proceeded to stomp on his chest.

Noel was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries one day later.

Ice house worker creates ruckus in court …after being remanded on attempted murder charge

A

21-year-old man who reportedly dealt a friend a blow to his head with a piece of wood created a ruckus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after he was remanded to prison pending trial.

Akeem Lammy was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. However, as he was being escorted out of the courtroom, he started punching and kicking the Policeman who was accompanying him. Other officers had to intervene and it took five ranks to restrain

the man.

He began shouting and begging several Police Officers who were restraining him to take his life.

He then began to scream, “I fed up of living on the streets; I want to die, ya’ll kill me.” His sister who was in court ran to his assistance, barricading him from several Policemen who had run to the assistance of the officer that was assaulted.

The Chief Magistrate, who was still on the bench at this time, adjourned court and retreated to her chambers.

Following much struggle, Lammy was taken into the chute leading to the court lockups.

It was pandemonium when the man emerged from the chute as he attempted again to fight several officers who were attempting to escort him.

His family members, who were looking on as the scene unfolded, were also heard shouting and attempted to force their way into the lock-ups.

Lammy, of Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was charged with wounding Johnny Ramdeen with intent to murder him on June 10 at Werk-enRust, Georgetown.

The Court heard that on the day of the incident, the two men were having an argument when Lammy picked up a piece of wood and dealt Ramdeen a blow to his head which caused him to collapse.

He was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was currently hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nursing a fractured skull. He will make his second court appearance on June 25, 2018.

Tragedy…

…at GECOM nevitability is one of the major characteristics of tragedies – Greek or Elizabethan – or Guyanese.

From the very beginning, one knows how matters will play out. And this is why what’s unfolding in Guyana at GECOM simply confirms what your Eyewitness has been raising his hands to the heavens and warning: the moment the PNC slipped into office, we’d been catapulted into a tragedy!

Pick a decision by the PNC since 2015 – ANY decision, in ANY field of endeavour! – and you’ll see the truth of your Eyewitness’ assertion. So who’s surprised every year our GDP growth rate keeps slip-sliding away!! But you get the idea, don’t you, dear reader?

So, let’s take a gander at the mega tragedy unfolding at GECOM – and we don’t even need the Muses singing in the wings to warn us. The moment Granger insisted only a JUDGE could become GECOM’s Chairman, we know what was coming down the pike. After all, he’d vowed to CONTINUE with Burnham’s legacy and since Burnham’s rigging of elections from 1968 onwards was facilitated by the Judges who were mandated to be the Chair of the Elections Commission – voila!!

So, for Granger to insist the clause – which altered the old “Justice” requirement, to add “or ANY other fit and proper person” – still meant only Judges could be submitted by the Opposition Leader, didn’t need even a tea-leaf reading to know what he was up to. A tragedy was brewing. This was confirmed when he unilaterally selected an OLD ex-Justice – just as Bunham had done – and plunked him into the chair!!

Now to their credit everyone – including the PPP – yelled bloody murder and even took the matter to the courts explaining Ex-Justice Patterson was just there to do the PNC’s bidding. They could’ve echoed Cheddi Jagan’s description of one of Burnham’s choice – a “toothless poodle” – but they were circumspect! But that doesn’t work with the PNC: in the first substantive decision placed before the Commission – appointing the acting CEO of GECOM - Patterson shamelessly throws his casting vote for the PNC’s side!!

It didn’t matter that the PPP-backed candidate outscored the PNC’s, in the evaluation based on objective criteria. The inevitability of tragedies don’t give a hoot about such niceties. Whatever will be will be…and what the PNC wants will be!!

But dear readers, this is just the opening act of the Tragedy – just setting the stage, so to speak.

The PNC “Dictatorship II” is the dénouement!! …in March 2020 oil Only on Tuesday it was reiterated that oil will start pumping come March 2020. That, of course, is right before the General Elections due in May 2020. And if you think that’s a coincidence, your Eyewitness has a bridge across the Essequibo River to sell you!! The fix is in, dear reader – and we can just see the PNC campaign motto: “Why change anything now that easy street’s here??!!”

But that’s not the tragedy your Eyewitness wants to explore right now. He wants you to hone in on the pic accompanying the announcement: and there you’ll see Trotman standing with the oil company rep – a vial of petroleum from the Lisa Field – and grinning from ear to ear like the Cheshire Cat!! And why not? Didn’t President Granger announce that “oil” had been taken away from Trotman’s Natural Resource portfolio, and transferred to Ministry of the Presidency??

Some thought that was a slap on the wrist for Trotman…But we can now see it was just a diversion from the bonus scandal!!

Nassau’s alive and well!! …of Walter Rodney Dr Rodney unquestionably was a unique political phenomenon. But imagine some members of the WPA – which was built on his reputation and work – is now in bed with the PNC that assassinated him.

It truly sickens the soul!!

Top-ranked applicant breaks silence …defends distinguished career, will not retaliate

he top-ranked candidate who has been overlooked and passed up by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for appointment as its next Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO), Vishnu Persaud has broken his silence following the revelations and concerns raised by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP)nominated Commissioners that there may be ethnic and employment discrimination occurring at the constitutional entity.

Speaking with Guyana Times on Wednesday, Persaud, who is currently unemployed, said that he was now contemplating his next step following the GECOM decision to not appoint him to serve a second stint as its DCEO even though he was asked to reapply to be considered for the post as a new applicant.

Persaud held the post of GECOM’s acting DCEO for over three years, but his contract, like several other senior functionaries’, was not renewed and was allowed

to expire since GECOM was without a Chairman following the resignation of Dr Steve Surujbally back in 2016.

Surujbally resigned on the heels of discontentment with his leadership and stewardship of the 2015 General and Regional Elections, which were marred by allegations of electoral fraud and discrepancies. The former DCEO demitted office in August last year.

“I have still not come to any position as to what to do or not to do. I know that I have to move on, because I have a family to provide for,” Persaud remarked as he explained that

he would rather not share his personal thoughts or emotions on the outcome of the process, which is being heavily criticised by several key stakeholders and sections of civil society.

Persaud was adamant that GECOM was constitutionally mandated and authorised to hire the appropriate staff with the right skill set to complete various tasks and fill established vacancies. He said, “Whether the Commission is right or wrong, it has made a decision.”

Asked whether he felt that the decision taken by the Commission was fair or justified, Persaud said that he “will not go there”, because he does not believe that adopting a confrontational approach would change the course of what has been decided.

Questioned further as to whether he believes that some of the arguments put forward for his non-selection or reappointment have any merit, the former DCEO defended his track record.

“I have always done my work professionally. I have never had racial or political bias in my work. I have never

showed any … and I would not want to make a comment that would cast a shadow on my past record,” he insisted.

He also appealed for those who were busy making comments which are false and not factual about his previous stint at GECOM to desist from doing so, as he stoutly defended his performance at every level of assignment.

“I would ask those people who are seeking to cast aspersions on my reputation to refrain from doing so and judge me on the basis of what you know of me and not on what is perceived,” he proffered.

He denied being involved with any political party or skulduggery during his tenure and argued strongly that he was a career professional and someone dedicated to very high standards.

“As far as I am aware, I have never ever been cautioned about a failure to conduct myself in a professional,

efficient and disciplined manner…,” he remarked.

In addition, Persaud, who also served as GECOM’s substantive Public Relations Officer for well over two years, said that he would not willingly go to the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) to file a complaint about GECOM’s alleged discriminatory employment practices.

“No. I am not going there,” he said when quizzed on the matter. He maintained that he was focused on finding employment that would put him in a better position to meet the needs of his family following this saga.

On Tuesday, for a second time in two weeks, the PPP-nominated GECOM Commissioners walked out of a meeting with the other Commissioners after being disallowed from probing the issue of ethnic composition with GECOM. The Commissioners urgently called a press conference to address that issue and the non-appointment of the

top applicant for the DCEO post, who is also of Indian descent, which struck them as a surprise.

The PPP GECOM Commissioners – Robeson Benn, Bibi Shadick and Sase Gunraj ,expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which their concerns are being dealt with by the Chairman of the Commission, retired Justice James Patterson.

The GECOM Commissioners also accused the Chairman of the Elections Commission of blatant racial discrimination in the appointment of a DCEO at GECOM. Commissioner Benn has expressed absolute disappointment on behalf of his colleagues at the decision made by the GECOM Chairman to not appoint Vishnu Persaud as the DCEO. Moreover, he maintained that Persaud was the best candidate for the job. In addition, he pointed out that the PPP Commissioners intended to take action and approach the ERC on this issue.

Caught red-handed: Police nab bandits during supermarket robbery …gun, ammo found

hree bandits who were in the process of robbing a supermarket at Grove, East Bank of Demerara (EBD) on Wednesday, were nabbed following swift actions by

Police.

Reports are the three men – one of whom was armed with a handgun – stealthily entered the “Number One Supermarket” at about 04:30h on Wednesday morn-

ing.

The men pounced on the lone security guard and bounded his hands with his shoe lace. The bandits then proceeded to the third floor of the building, removed the grill from a window and entered the building.

As the bandits were all inside of the supermarket, the 53-year-old security guard, managed to free himself and immediately alerted neighbours who summoned the Police.

Prompt response from the lawmen resulted in the bandits being caught in the act.

When Guyana Times visited the supermarket, Andy Lin, whose family owns the business, and who resides in the top flat of the building, said he was asleep and unaware of what was happening. He said that at about 06:00h, he learnt of what had transpired when a Police Officer

went into the upper flat and alerted him. The CCTV footage was also reviewed, which showed the men entering the premises.

When the men were nabbed they had $70,000 in prepaid phone cards and an undisclosed sum of cash in their possession.

Meanwhile a .38 revolver with six live matching rounds was also found.

An employee of the business told this publication that the supermarket was only opened about five weeks ago. Meanwhile, the bandits – two of whom hail from Herstelling Sea Dam and the other from Covent Garden, EBD – are being processed for court.

fter much controversy and criminal charges against two former Government officials in relation to the sale of a plot of land to MovieTowne Guyana, businessman, Derek Chin said he was informed that the transaction was above board, adding that the issue has since become a nuisance as he tries to complete his project.

The businessman noted that the price he paid was a “good one” and had he not stuck to the terms of the initial arrangement, then the issue should have engaged the attention of the courts. He noted that the investment should be looked at holistically, since he would have expended over US$45 million to date.

“I don’t get involved in

anything that is bacchanal and we were given the assurances that everything was above board and we delivered.

We made a commitment. I think the land then was valued at let’s say US$2 million, we paid US$1 million. For that million US, you get another US$40 million on top of that, plus you get the employment and all that we are going to generate so I told that that shouldn’t be a matter that anybody should want to go to court on. This is how investments work. Some countries give you the land free in return for the investment,” Chin explained.

Chin added that MovieTowne Guyana is a sustainable investment with the intention being to expand and build similar franchises throughout Guyana.

“Nothing untoward happened… at that time I could very well say that I am not interested. This is going to stimulate more and more economic activities and if the reports are positive then you will have more and more investors coming to Guyana,” Chin said.

Meanwhile, Private Sector Commission Chairman, Eddie Boyer said the land was sold reasonably, adding that the entire valuation system in Guyana needs to be overhauled.

“Our whole valuation process needs to be overhauled. If you look at valuation for properties, there are a lot of inconsistences. We don’t have

proper valuation that you can actually get the values. If you go to the Valuation Office and you ask three of them to value, half of them are not qualified and they cannot value what is the actual value so therefore, we used what we will pay and that is what’s happening here,” Boyer noted.

In April, former Finance Minister Ashni Singh and former head of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited, Winston Brassington were charged with three counts of misconduct in public office.

he 18-year-old who on Saturday last reportedly attacked and stabbed a 19-year-old labourer was on Wednesday charged and appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Kenny Dass, of Lot 17 Lombard Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, was not allowed to plead to the indictable offence.

It is being alleged that he attempted to murder Anthony Bartholomew of Lot 12 Drysdale Street, Charlestown.

Reports are the two teen-

agers, who are known to each, had an argument on the day in question over a cellphone.

A fight ensued, and Dass reportedly pulled out an ice pick and stabbed Bartholomew several times about his body.

The injured teen was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remained in critical condition.

Dass, however, went to the Brickdam Police Station, where he reported the matter and was taken into Police custody.

According to the GRA on Wednesday, the arrests were made with assistance from the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

The incident occurred about 21:50h last Thursday. According to reports, three officers from GRA’s Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) went to a house at Bee Hive and were enquiring about its owner, when a Toyota Premio and a Toyota Allion approached the officers and their occupants opened fire at them.

tical positions and returned fire, resulting in the vehicles leaving the scene. Guyana Times had reported that one of the vehicles allegedly carried the registration number PMM 9002.

The two injured officers, who were shot to their right and left hand respectively, were treated at a private medical institution and sent away.

The four suspects are currently being processed and are expected to appear in court shortly to answer to a number of charges.

Magistrate McLennan ordered that the defendant be supervised by a probation officer until the completion of the trial. He was remanded to prison. The case will continue on June 25, 2018.

olice have since confirmed that a post-mortem examination, conducted by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, on the body of a 23-year-old prisoner, has revealed that the young man died from brain haemorrhage due to blunt trauma.

The young man, Junior Dunn, also known as Shawn Thom, was also nursing a fractured right cheek when he succumbed to injuries on Sunday at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Guyana Times has been reliably informed that the now dead man’s mother made a report to the Alberttown Police Station, where an investigation into his death is to commence.

The young man breathed his last at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was being treated for injuries he received while at the Camp Street Prison on May

His demise was confirmed to this newspaper on Sunday by acting Director of Prisons, Kevin Pilgrim. During an interview, Pilgrim stated that he received a telephone call on Sunday morning informing him of the prisoner’s demise.

The official reiterated that upon Dunn being discovered in a semi-conscious

state on May 26, the prisoners with whom he had shared a cell told prison officers that he had sustained the injury in a fall.

Dunn had reportedly stabbed another prisoner with a mop stick during a scuffle on May 25, and based on that incident, he had been relocated to another cell with three other inmates.

Director of Prisons,

Gladwin Samuels had related that investigations were launched into both incidents, and the findings would be sent to the relevant authorities.

Those investigations, according to Pilgrim, had been completed and the findings were sent to the Public Security Ministry. Taking Dunn’s demise into consideration, the investigations will be reopened.

Pilgrim has said that prison officials were waiting on the post-mortem results to decide their next step. However, he noted that ever since Dunn’s admittance to the Georgetown Public Hospital, his mother had been in constant contact with the Prison Service.

The 23-year-old had been serving two threeyear consecutive sentences for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He was expected to be released from prison in 2019.

post-mortem examination conducted on the body of 19-year-old Sasia Adams on Wednesday, by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, has revealed that she died as a result of blunt trauma to the head.

Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) who resided at East Street, Georgetown, was reportedly rushed to the Dr Balwant Singh Hospital about 20:00h on Tuesday by her 21-yearold boyfriend of Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

He reportedly told nurses that she jumped from his moving car while they were proceeding along Lamaha Street.

Guyana Times was told that the young woman, who was conscious at the time of admission, later told doctors that she fell at home.

She was admitted into the Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with severe head injuries and succumbed to her injuries about 11:00h on Tuesday.

Police have taken the boyfriend into custody and are investigating the young woman’s death.

Red Thread report finds overwhelming increase in abuse over the years

T

here has been a significant increase in the various forms of abuse over the years – as is evident in news reports.

This conclusion was made recently as Red Thread presented its findings from a twoyear project at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus. The project targeted Better Hope/Plaisance, Parfaite Harmonie, Anna Regina, Bartica and Lethem among other areas.

Over the 24-month period, close to 6000 persons were engaged during house-to-house visits and community meetings.

According to statistics garnered from a court report, “Physical abuse was mentioned in 34 per cent of the application forms in 2014. In 2017, it was 48 per cent of the cases coded … Emotional and physiological abuse was mentioned in most of the cases.

Verbal abuse and name calling were specifically mentioned in 17 per cent of the applications in 2014. Forty per cent in 2017. More than one form of emotional and physiological abuse was mentioned in 17 per cent of the applications in 2014 and 40 per cent of the applications in 2017”.

The Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), based on its study findings, has suggested several measures to be enforced as it seeks to reduce the disappointing situation in the country.

Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Marcus-Isaacs, who was on hand as the report was publicly released, noted that one of the important steps that were necessary to decrease the number of abuse cases may very well be the creation of more safe houses for victims and survivors of abuse.

She even recommended more specialised counsel-

ling services for children, as she pointed out the shortage of probation and welfare officers to service the courts. “In many instances, there are adjournments, because the probation officer is not ready with the report and that is because that one probation officer is servicing three or four Magistrate’s Courts,” MarcusIsaacs explained.

Statistics from the project also found that 81 per cent of domestic violence cases were filed by women, 17 per cent by males, and it was unclear who filed the remaining two per cent. On the other hand, when it came to persons subjected to court orders, it found that 83 per cent of men were respondents to the orders and 17 per cent of females.

More specifically, the survey found that between January and May 2018, 333 of the 3067 matters filed in the East Demerara Magisterial District were domestic violence matters; in the Essequibo Magisterial District, 3084 matters were filed with 35 of these being domestic violence matters; in the Georgetown Magisterial District, there were 7972 matters filed with 352 of those domestic violence matters and in Berbice Magisterial District, there were 1947 matters, with 35 domestic violence cases.

The project, launched by Red Thread two years ago, was conceptualised with the intention of changing persons’ attitudes as it relates to domestic violence, to examine the performance of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and courts in dealing with these matters and to draft recommendations for these entities to better develop their capacity.

As a result of the project, 743 victims of domestic and sexual violence were supported.

Berbice Magistrate on Wednesday called investigators attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) a “bunch of jokers”, something which did not go down well with acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine.

M a g i s t r a t e Rabindranauth Singh while presiding over the case of the recent piracy attack criticised the Police, saying they are “behaving like bunch of jokers” as it relates to confusion whether to withdraw or put forward charges for the accused.

The Magistrate told the court that it has to be balanced and therefore cannot take sides.

His comments came as he presided over the murder case emanating from the piracy attack, which left four dead and 11 unaccounted for.

They were not required to plea to the indictable charge which stated that between April 27 and May 3 at sea, they murdered Tillacknauth Mohabir, called “Caiman”; and Mahesh Sarjoo, called “Koba” during the course of a robbery.

Last month, Manohar appeared before the same Magistrate, charged with the

murder and was remanded.

However, on Wednesday, the Police withdrew that charge and imposed the joint double murder charge on the duo. It was in relation to this that the Magistrate made the aforementioned remarks.

elon Henry, called “Nasty Man”, on Wednesday denied he was responsible for the September 29, 2015 killing of footballer Dexter Griffith, who was shot near his mother's East Ruimveldt, Georgetown home. Thirteen witnesses are set to testify before the Judge Sandil Kissoon and jury, at the Demerara High Court; while Henry of Houston, East Bank Demerara, is being represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson.

At Wednesday’s hearing, the deceased man’s mother, Lavern Griffith, was first to testify and recalled running to the Warlock area – some distance from her home – where she and other relatives saw the footballer lying in a drain. She said they rushed him to hospital where doctors later informed that her son had died.

Griffith’s mother told the court that her son was living at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, and would come to her home frequently to take his daughter to and from school. She noted that

he also worked as a mason during the day. On that fateful evening, she noted that her son was playing football outside her home and noted that a man she knew only as “Gun-butt” came up on a white motorcycle shouting for “Delon” before he retreated.

Griffith, who broke down in tears at various intervals, said Dexter came into her house after 17:30h and took a bath; thereafter someone called for him and he went down the street after dressing. The emotional woman recounted that sometime after she heard the sounds of “by-by-by” which sounded like gunshots.

It was then that several persons started running but she didn’t see her son among the crowd. She said she told the mother of Dexter’s children to go with her and look for him and after going to the road corner, they saw him in the drain.

At this point in her testimony, Griffith was given tissue to wipe away her tears.

Police Corporal Rawle Bacchus testified to witnessing the post-mortem examination conducted by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh and uplifting the said report. According to information, Griffith on the day in question, at the said location at about 19:30h, was sitting on a chair at Genip Street, Ruimveldt when the accused walked towards him and fired several shots in his direction, fatally injuring him in the process.

After being shot, Griffith reportedly managed to stand and walked a short distance in an attempt to escape from Henry but eventually fell unconscious to the ground, while his assailant escaped.

Public spirited persons near the scene of the crime eventually took him to a city hospital where he was later pronounced dead on arrival.

Prosecutors Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt are prosecuting the State’s case.

The matter continues before Justice Kissoon tomorrow.

Nevertheless, during the court proceedings earlier in the day, Nakool was represented by Attorney Joel Edmond who asked the court about the readiness of the file, saying the Police seemed to be confused. He noted that the Police were not sure whether to charge the duo along with Alexander Denhearte jointly.

He also noted that the Police had moved the date of the alleged offence from April 27 to April 26. He also asked that charges against

Manohar for 2015 and 2016 be discharged.

Manohar was last month remanded on the two previous charges of robbery on the high seas committed in 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Orin Joseph asked the court for 14 days to return for report and fixture.

Meanwhile, Persaud who was unrepresented, told the Magistrate he was beaten and starved whilst in custody.

They will all have to return to court on June 26.

The body of Mahesh Sarjoo was laid to rest last Saturday in Suriname.

esidents of Kildonan, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and its surrounding communities were on Tuesday urged by Minister of State Joseph Harmon to hold public officials inclusive of those in Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (RDC/NDCs) accountable, as he noted that they have been placed there to serve the citizens. He reiterated that they must therefore demand that their interests and those of the community are addressed.

The Minister, while speaking at a community meeting held at the Kildonan Community Centre Ground, addressed the concerns that were raised by residents as it relates to poor utility services that are being offered.

The Minister called on residents to hold their regional officials account-

able just as they do Central Government and admonished the regional leaders to work to ensure the interests of their constituents are properly represented.

“You have to put pressure on these people, on the NDC, on the RDC because when funds are allocated, it is for them to provide a service for you citizens. If you know money has been allocated in the budget for works in your community and you do not see anything happening, there is a provision in the clause of NDCs, which states that you can go and petition the NDC,” he said to the residents.

His advice to the regional officials was, “Community leaders must face the community. If you cannot talk to your people and do things for them then they will not respect you or listen to you.

You have to see people and

see what they need,” he said.

During the meeting, Marvin Duncan, a resident who lost his home recently to a fire, was informed by Minister Harmon that 10 tonnes of sand as well as 500 concrete blocks will be provided to aid his rebuilding efforts.

Hazrat Hussain, also a resident of the region, noted that the residents of East Bank Berbice are happy and grateful for the works that have been taking place in that area, particularly the road works.

The Public Infrastructure Ministry has undertaken the $1.2 billion project, which will see the construction of a five kilometres roadway from Overwinning to Everton, equipped with new features aimed at bolstering road safety. The road, which was deplorable in the dry weather, is now impassable in the rainy season.

87% of $100M Natural Resources Ministry-funded UG grant spent …GGMC retained $45M

he University of Guyana’s (UG) Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Paloma MohamedMartin has revealed that 87 per cent of a $100 million Natural Resources Ministryfunded grant was expended with the remaining funds is expected to be used up by July. Under the objectives of this grant, was to assist in geological engineering and mining engineering programmes.

The topic of funding expenditure regarding one of the premiere learning institution’s largest ever allocation came up at the University’s recent media engagement at Herdmanston Lodge, Georgetown, where the UG’s administration defended its management operations. UG received a $100 million grant from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) through the Natural Resources Ministry last year, from which $45 million GGMC retained for equipment purchased that is on its way for the Faculty of Technology to utilise. Another $55 million was handed over for the University to expend at other faculties. “$18 million was given

He explained that a $100 million grant has not only benefited the engineering department but will take into consideration that engineering and oil and gas relate to other programmes under the Social Sciences and Earth and Environmental Sciences departments.

Observers had long called on the University to include programmes that focus on the energy sector but in 2016, a year after the oil discovery was made, UG disclosed that it was nowhere near offering such electives.

The march commenced at the Labour Department’s office on Brickdam and culminated at D’Urban Park with a rally. Some of the participating schools included St Winifred Secondary School, the New Campbellville Secondary, Freeburg Secondary, Kingston Secondary, South Ruimveldt Secondary, the Business School and Queenstown Secondary.

Addressing the gathering of students and members of the Social Protection Ministry was the Minister within the Social Protection Minister Keith Scott, who noted that child labour must be eradicated since it affects every aspect of a child’s development.

He also underscored the need for people to report incidences where children may be placed in a working environment.

“If you know any child or any parent who is taking advantage of the child in your opinion may be practicing child labour, it now becomes your task, your duty to ensure that those children get the necessary help that is available for them,” Minister Scott related to the gathering.

He emphasises that when children are placed to work and aren’t afforded the opportunity to play and interact, they face severe underdevelopment.

“You have to watch and see what is the harm that can be done. They can be physically stunted. You’re mentally disabled because you cannot have the chance to develop and the time to enjoy leisure,” he added.

Additionally, the Assistant Chief Labour Officer Karen VanslutymanCorbin addressed those gathered and encouraged the students to be aware

of the facts that surround child labour.

“There is no excuse, child labour is child abuse,” she chanted.

Teachers and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were also advised to assist the department in combating all forms of child labour by the year 2025.

Anti-child Labour Day was celebrated on Wednesday under the theme: Generation Safe and Health: End Child Labour.

From the 250 million children that are victims of child labour, seven percent are in Latin America and Guyana.

This year also saw the drafting of the anti-child labour policy which will be completed in time for the new academic year in September. This document is also the first of its kind to be introduced to the Caribbean region.

The department will also be engaged in other activities in the coming weeks to further sensitise the public on child labour.

Cop charged for causing death by dangerous driving

Police Officer attached to Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, was on Wednesday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Corporal Errol Rowney, 28, of Lot 17 William Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was placed on $500,000 bail when he appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court.

During his court appearance on Wednesday, Prosecutor Rochelle Mars told the court that the accident occurred on May 20, 2017, at Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice.

She said Rowney was driving motor car bearing registration plate number PTT 2200 and at about 17:40h, he collided with motor car PSS 1675 being driven by Errol

Nicholson; a 56-year-old businessman of Number 28 Village.

Nicholson received injuries and was hospitalised and subsequently died.

However, the Cop denied the charge. The case will continue on July 5 before Magistrate Rhondel Weaver.

Rowney was represented by Attorney Tejnarine Ramroop.

Decomposed body of bandit found in house

he body of a bandit was found in an advanced state of decomposition on Wednesday in an abandoned house at Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice.

Dead is Leroy Husbands.

He was found in the living room of the house lying face down. Reports are that on Tuesday, residents in the area reported a foul stench coming from the house.

However, on Wednesday morning, residents decided to investigate. It was then the discovery was made.

Residents explained that in recent days, Husbands was seen going into the abandoned house.

Two weeks ago, he was discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital after being admitted.

Husbands is known by the Police and has been

convicted for several robberies and brake and enters. The most recent was the 2015 robbery of M Ali Supermarket at Main and Pope Streets, New Amsterdam.

Antigua: Impostors allegedly tried to kidnap cop’s mom

wo men allegedly impersonated Police Wednesday morning and attempted to kidnap the mother of a member of the Police Force.

Her son is one of three officers who have a sexual harassment complaint before the Police Service Commission, against suspended top cop Wendel Robinson.

The 44-year-old woman was reportedly alone some time after 10:00h when two men, dressed in blue coveralls with the word POLICE marked on the back, showed up at her workplace in Fitches Creek in a black vehicle.

Migrant ship row: Italy-France Ministers' meeting postponed

ichelin-starred chef Atul Kocchar has been fired for a tweet claiming Muslims have "terrorised" Hindus for thousands of years.

The JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai dropped the chef after he posted the comments, aimed at Indian actress Priyanka Chopra.

Chopra has come under fire for a recent episode of her US TV show “Quantico”, featuring a plot about Hindu nationalists.

The chef has apologised for the tweet.

But his Dubai restaurant fired the chef on Wednesday, after threats online to boycott the establishment for Kocchar's comments.

Canada, US & Mexico joint bid wins right to host tournament

T

he 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico after their joint bid beat Morocco’s proposal to host it.

The ‘United 2026’ bid was selected by FIFA member nations, winning 134 votes compared to 65 for Morocco.

The 2026 tournament will be the biggest World Cup ever held – with 48 teams playing 80 matches over 34 days.

“Football is the only victor. We are all united in football,” US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said.

“Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour.

Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege.”

Of the 211 FIFA member nations, 200 cast a vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday, with the winning bid needing a majority of 104.

Canada, Mexico, Morocco and the US were exempt, while Ghana was absent after the country’s government said it had disbanded its football association amid allegations of “widespread” corruption.

Three US territories – Guam, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – were among the other member nations to not vote.

Both Mexico (1970 and

Of the 16 host cities, 10 will be in the United States while the remainder will be split evenly between Canada and Mexico.

Sixty matches will take place in the US, while Canada and Mexico will host 10 games each.

The final will be held at the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium, which is home to NFL sides the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

The distance between the most northern host city (Edmonton) and the most southern (Mexico City) is almost 3,000 miles, which compares to 1,900 miles at this month’s tournament in Russia.

The tournament will mark the first time a World Cup has been shared by three host nations.

The 1994 World Cup, staged by the US, had the highest average attendance

in the tournament’s history, while Mexico was the first nation to host the event twice.

few metres from the Okhotni Ryad metro station in Moscow, Iranian fans lined up on Tuesday evening.

“Iran! Iran! Iran!” coursed through Red Square as minutes remained for sunset.

Near midnight, their number had significantly increased and the chants, this time of a much wider variety, got louder. The Iran fans were soon joined by a few Russians.

With Iranian and Russian flags flying side by side, the camaraderie between the two sets of supporters was evident to all bystanders. “Russia, spasiba! (Russia, thank you!)” was heard loud and clear a few minutes later; the Iranians expressing gratitude to the World Cup hosts.

A few metres away, fans of Peru made themselves heard as they serenaded passers-by with praise of their national team.

Four years after Germany triumphed in Brazil, the World Cup is back, this time debuting on Russian soil. And if one needs any reminding, a trip to the Red Square is enough to get one into the mood.

For the past few days, pubs in the area have been working overtime to accommodate the sudden, huge surge in customers. On most occasions, fans from various countries have been engaged in sing-offs and playful digs at each other.

Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu on a three-year deal.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said it had dismissed the 51-year-old because the negotiation occurred "without any information to the RFEF".

Spain sporting director Fernando Hierro will take charge for the World Cup. The former Real Madrid and Bolton Wanderers defender is in his second spell as sporting director, having returned to the role in November 2017, six years after leaving the position.

The tournament starts on Thursday in Russia.

RFEF president Luis Rubiales, who was told of Lopetegui's new role with Real five minutes before it was announced, said he had found himself in "a very difficult situation".

"I know there's going to be criticism whatever I do," he added.

"I'm sure this will, in time, make us stronger. I admire Julen very much, I respect him very much. He seems a top trainer and that makes it harder to make the decision.

Tough on Iran Japan have a better draw in comparison to South Korea, Iran, Australia and Saudi Arabia. But they have been far from impressive in recent times and are rank outsiders to make it to the last-16.

Iran, Asia’s best bet at the tournament, have arguably the toughest draw among the Asian quintet.

All eyes, for now, will be at the Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday as hosts Russia take on Saudi Arabia.

ri Lanka have lost Angelo Mathews midway through their West Indies tour, after he left for home due to personal reasons. The news gets worse for the team: fast bowler Lahiru Gamage has been ruled out of the tour as well, thanks to a fractured finger sustained on the final day of the first Test.

Replacements will be flown out, but they are almost certain to be unavailable for the second Test, given the length of the flights. Batsman Danushka Gunathilaka, who had played in the Tests against Bangladesh in February, and allrounder Dasun Shanaka, who had played against India last year, will only leave Sri Lanka on Wednesday evening - the eve of the St. Lucia Test.

Thankfully for Sri Lanka, they had taken the precaution of carrying 17 players, rather than the usual 15, on tour. This means they have Dhananjaya de Silva and Mahela Udawatte as cover for an unavailable batsman, and two extra quicks, Kasun Rajitha and Asitha Fernando, on hand to replace Lahiru Gamage in the XI. Mathews has had awful luck during tours over the past two years, missing more Tests than he has played - though that was mostly due to injury. Chief selector Graeme Labrooy confirmed that he will not return to the Caribbean at all, and will be out of the third Test as well.

orld number one Rafael Nadal has apologised for having to withdraw from next week’s FeverTree Championships at the Queen’s Club in London.

Nadal won his 11th French Open title on Sunday and said he needed to rest before next month’s Wimbledon.

“I have spoken to my doctors and need to listen to what my body is telling me,” the 32-year-old Spaniard said.

“I would like to say sorry to the tournament organisers and the fans that were hoping to see me play.”

Nadal won the Queen’s Club title 10 years ago, but his last appearance at the tournament was in 2015, when he lost in the opening round to Russia’s Alexandr Dolgopolov.

“Queen’s is a great event, I have happy memories of winning the title in 2008 and I wanted to come back this year,” added Nadal.

“But it has been a very long clay-court season for me with great results.”

PSG need to sell 60M euros worth of players to meet FFP rules

They were cleared of breaching FFP rules, but the French club’s transfer dealings from last summer onwards will remain “under close scrutiny”.

Uefa opened an investigation into PSG’s spending in September.

It came after PSG broke the world record transfer fee in August 2017 when they signed Neymar for £200M. They also signed Kylian Mbappe on loan, and could pay £165.7M for him this summer.

“The financial impact of transfer activities

as from the 2017 summer - up to and including the upcoming transfer window - and compliance with the break-even requirement for the 2018 financial year will remain under close scrutiny and will be thoroughly looked at in the coming weeks,” Uefa said in statement.

European football’s governing body introduced FFP ‘break-even’ rules in 2013, requiring clubs to balance their spending with their revenue.

In closing the investigation, Uefa said the “break-even result of the club remains within acceptable deviation” for the past three financial years.

s the 2018 South American Games athletes returned to Guyana, the usual script was followed: a press conference and a photo opportunity. Although this has become the custom in our homeland, Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Technical Director and Boxing Coach Terrence Poole decided that he would take a stand against the unfair treatment that athletes have been receiving over the past years.

After presenting his report on the Cochabamba, Bolivia trip, where both of the Guyanese boxers secured bronze medals, Poole made a passionate plea on his athletes’ behalf.

“We need to look at athletes’ welfare now. The athletes are willing to perform, but if they don’t have things to go after, they will not perform.”

Poole went on to use Guyanese javelin record holder Leslain Baird’s promotion as an example of what could be offered to sportspersons. “The GDF offered Senior Petty Officer Baird, since before the Commonwealth Games the Chief-of-Staff said ‘you give me 77.5 and I promote you’.

After Poole’s passionate discourse, Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) President KA Juman-Yassin took a stand with the Coach, explaining that his organisation would try its utmost best to reward the athletes, but the Government could offer much more.

“An athlete goes, he comes back – a photo opportunity and that’s the end. I endorse what Terrence has said and we need something

much more tangible from the Government. The GOA cannot do everything,” JumanYassin said.

The Guyanese athletes returned home with a total of five medals from the 11-member contingent.

Javelin thrower Leslain Baird broke the national record with a throw of 78.65 metres which landed him a silver medal. Boxers Colin Lewis and Keevin Allicock both walked away with bronze medals, while track and field athletes Jenea McCalmon and Winston George also copped bronze medals.

ith just over 150 days to the start of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Championship in the West Indies, Cricket West Indies officially launched its Women’s Patron Program in Kingston on Wednesday, June 13.

The five women are Yaneek Page, Dahlia Harris, Sandra Glasgow, Pat Garel and Ann-Marie Vaz and they have “pledged their support” for the upcoming stand-alone event.

Director of Sales, Jamaica Pegasus, Prudence Simpson was a special guest.

Tournament Director, Jennifer Nero, offered the charge to the five women on their roles with regards to supporting the November 9 – 24 event to be held in Guyana, St Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda.

She has sought the support of the women to support the game of cricket by encouraging other young women to play, encourage fans to attend the matches

and to build on a program that will become a legacy for women in Cricket and sport in the wider Caribbean Cricket West Indies (CWI) President, Dave Cameron, in his brief remarks, thanked the women for their support and “urged them to support the wider program by continuing to support women in sport and build on what exists for sustainability.”

CWI will take the program around the region and will engage women in the six territories across the region.

The hope is to have at least 30 women from all backgrounds and industries.

The full list should be ready by the end of Summer with at least two months prior to the start of the Championship.

The women will attend a few of the matches in the WINDIES Women Championship now on and goes up to June 24. Jamaica and Barbados have so far won two games; TT and Guyana, one, and the other teams have not yet scored a point.

ri Lanka had hoped this would be one of their easier away tours this year. West Indies' home record was modest; Sri Lanka's Test side was picking up some momentum. But the Test in Port-ofSpain wasn't merely a defeat, it was a decimation. Twice West Indies' quicks scythed through the visitors' top order. Although Sri Lanka had fielded five frontline bowlers, they still could not capitalise on having the opposition 147 for 5 on the first day.

On a batting track, only Kusal Mendis could muster a score of over 45 and even that, only having given two clear-cut chances.

When these teams had last met, in Sri Lanka in 2015, West Indies had shown flashes of individual brilliance but had failed to come together as a team. In the first Test, they had no such problems. Commitment to the team cause was visible in the way Devendra Bishoo and Kemar Roach buckled down alongside Shane Dowrich, to haul West Indies to a formidable score. Even with the ball, there were unlikely contributors Roston Chase running through Sri Lanka's tail on the fifth day, after the quicks had knocked out the top order.

While the hosts surge, Sri Lanka have tactical questions to answer.

Is the five-frontline bowler strategy worth persisting with, given Dilruwan Perera's modest returns with the ball? Kusal Perera is likely to make way for Dhananjaya de Silva at the

top of the innings, but can Sri Lanka accommodate Kusal lower down the order, now that Angelo Mathews has left the tour? And is the attack dynamic enough? Or does it require the insertion of Akila Dananjaya?

Guyana Open Golf tourney slated for November G

olfers from Guyana and overseas will converge at the Lusignan Golf Course over the weekend of November 3-4 to swing off the country’s premier golf event, the Guyana Open Golf Tournament 2018.

According to the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC), a full field of 100 players is expected to compete for top honours at the two-day event. Among the ‘to-do’ list is the inaugural live streaming of the event, as well as creating “a pleasantly memorable, refreshing and captivating experience”.

Apart from the on-field action, the Club will cater for over 300 persons, including players, diplomats, Ministers of Government and special invitees at an invitation-only cocktail reception on the eve of the tournament.

The Course will be closed for regular play on November 2 to facilitate the smooth hosting of the Guyana Open. It will reopen on November 6.

The Medal Play tournament will be played over 36 holes with action starting at 05:10h on each day. Players

Integration and reinvestment – reaping the fruits of North America 2026 G uyana Football Federation (GFF) President Wayne Forde travelled to Russia to participate in a FIFA congress and the voting process for the 2026 World Cup venue, as North America – inclusive of the USA, Canada and Mexico – found itself bidding against Morocco to host one of the highest-grossing sporting events in the world.

Earlier on Tuesday, it was announced that North America had unanimously won the bid, a revelation that would please the GFF President.

“If we’re successful in bringing it into our confederation, it’s going to be the most profitable World Cup in the history of FIFA World Cups. It projected that it’s easily somewhere around 11 and a half to 12 billion [USD] in profit, so why would we not want to do that; of course, we would like to see some of that good revenue being reinvested in infrastructure in Guyana,” Forde had said when questioned about Guyana’s vote.

However, despite the President’s elation at being able to have the World Cup hosted within the CONCACAF region, questions were raised about the benefits that Guyana and the wider Caribbean would get from the event. Those queries were based on the fact that the North American countries, especially the USA and Canada, seldom engage with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) teams.

In reply to those questions, Forde said, “For you to somehow compare the fact that Guyana over the past two decades hasn’t had an opportunity to play the USA, we have played Canada; of course, we played Mexico a couple of times. So when you look at the stronger nations, we would have come up against two of them.”

Forde then stated: “What I can speak to is that the President’s vision is to do everything within his power to not only integrate the confederation but to impact the quality of the game within the CFU region.”

This statement brought the conversation to how the Caribbean and Guyana could benefit from the spoils of the 2026 World Cup. To which Forde confirmed that he has been in talks with CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani,

who is “pursuing an agenda that will see a lot of reinvestment in the Caribbean”.

“President Montagliani has been at the helm of CONCACAF for just over two years and he has brought in a new culture of inclusiveness in the operation of football within the confederation,” he stated, citing the Nations League as one of the initiatives that have been bridging the divide.

“And there’re other ideas that will see further integration of the family, ‘cause he understands how important it is for you not to have a handful of countries that are doing exceptionally well and the bulk of the family is below,” Forde concluded.

The wait is now on to see how the 2026 World Cup will play out; will the North American and Caribbean nations engage in more friendlies?

Will revenue trickle down to the CFU for infrastructural development? In eight years, time will tell. In the meantime the GFF is focused on seeing the men’s national team (the Golden Jaguars) qualify for the 2026 World Cup under the stewardship of new Head Coach Michael Johnson.
