Armed bandits rob driver, escape with his vehicle A driver is now traumatised after he was relieved of his cellular phone, cash, and other valuables by armed gunmen who made good their escape in his vehicle (PWW 9661) on Wednesday evening.

The missing vehicle is a pearl white new model Toyota Allion registered to another individual, Tony Mason. However, the driver, Bryan Cameron was operating the vehicle at the time of the robbery.

Reports are that Bryan was dropping off someone he knew at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Wednesday evening around 21:00h when he received a telephone call from a private number.

The caller requested that the taxi driver collect him from a popular drinking establishment in Grove, EBD because he (the caller was in need of a taxi).

As a result of the loud music in the background at the bar, Cameron could not clearly identify whether he knew the identity of the caller, but assumed it was someone who knew him.

However, as Cameron ar-

rived at the location, the man entered his vehicle and told him that that he was heading to Georgetown.

Along the route, the passenger requested that the driver stop at Republic Park, EBD, to collect three other individuals who were heading to the same location.

When the trio entered the car, they reportedly told the driver that they were headed to Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown, and upon arriving at that location, two of them whipped out handguns and threatened to hurt him if he did not comply with their orders.

Based on reports received,

the men instructed Cameron to hand over his cellular phone and his wallet, along with cash that was inside of the vehicle, and to leave the car keys in the ignition and that he exits the car.

Fearing for his life, the fearful man quickly exited the vehicle, and was left standing helpless on the road as the armed bandits sped away from him.

Cameron subsequently managed to get assistance from persons in the area, to get to a Police station where he filed a report.

Anyone who may have seen the missing vehicle is asked to contact 669-6187 or the nearest Police station.

Linden mother pleads for safe return of 15-year-old daughter

A

Linden mother is pleading for the safe return of her 15-yearold daughter who went missing since last Thursday. The Wisburg Secondary School student, Michelle Pierre, left home to attend the school sports and was not seen since.

Her mother, Anikha Harris, is in shock and is worried that something bad might have happened since the teenager would not run away from home.

“She was wearing her school uniform skirt, a white T-shirt with the image of a tree, black and white adidas slippers and a pink and white sock. That’s what she left to go to sports with...” Pierre noted.

The family has since filed a missing person’s report at the Mackenzie Police station headquarters in Linden.

Police are expected to visit the school in a bid to ascertain her whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the mother continues to plead with anyone with information on the missing teen to contact her or Police.

“Where ever she is, I wish for her to come home because I don’t know

pposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo says that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) will lose its credibility if it continues to issue orders and statements, and then later retract them.

He was at the time speaking about the recent order sent out by GECOM that persons already on the voters’ list will have to verify their registration, which was subsequently retracted by the Commission.

“The Chairperson [of GECOM, retired Justice Claudette Singh] must now realise that the institution will lose credibility if every single week they issue a press release that is misleading and has to be corrected the next day or orders which have to be subsequently corrected. They not only mislead the entire country, which could lead to undermining of the institution and its standing and its impartiality, but it creates a ton of grief for people across this country,” Jagdeo said at his weekly press conference on Thursday.

He pointed out that persons waste their time trying to comply with orders from GECOM which are then later retracted.

Furthermore, the Opposition Leader went on to talk about the another order issued by GECOM that was retracted as well, that is, the timeline for the Claims and Objections

(C&O) exercise changing from 35 days to 49.

“So when we sought to find out how this happened, we discovered that Mr [Keith] Lowenfield, who is the CEO (Chief Elections Officer) – he takes the order from the Commission. He has to give effect to the decisions of the Commission, not the other way around.

He is the staff and reports to the Commission – he inserted these two features into the order but we’ve seen a long pattern of this from Mr Lowenfield. So when we sought an explanation, he said ‘Oh, I did it on my own’,” Jagdeo told reporters on Thursday.

According to the Opposition Leader, while the Elections Commission has since reversed this, it was still influenced to extend the timeline to 42 days. The timeline extension was supported by the Governmentnominated Commissioners and the GECOM Chair.

He posited that it is worrying that the CEO can change decisions taken by the Commission without any repercussions. “…the Commission, everyone agreed that it should be 35 days. [So] I found it extremely strange that having made that decision with a vote, that a CEO can come and then change the decision of the [Commission] without consequences. It is time the Commission calls in the Police on some of these individuals or discipline them but you know in that environment that will be a hard stretch. It will never happen because it seem as though he’s doing this with the support of some Commissioners and I found it very strange

that the Chairperson having supported that 35 days… changed it to 42 days,” Jagdeo asserted.

Nevertheless, the Opposition Leader noted that he still has confidence in the GECOM Chair, Retired Justice Claudette Singh.

In the same vain, however, he said that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will continue to be vigilant and guarded against “rouge elements” within the elections body regarding the operations of GECOM going into the March 2020 elections.

The much-anticipated elections date was announced last week by President David Granger but not before mounting pressure from civil society bodies and the Opposition in Guyana, as well as the international community.

In fact, even after he had named the polling date, the Head of State had faced another set of criticism for not issuing a proclamation or dissolving Parliament in accordance with the Constitution.

While earlier this week the President finally issued the proclamation, Jagdeo contended that he did not do the country or any one a favour since he was constitutionally bound to do so. The Opposition Leader’s comment was made in light of commendation pouring in for the Head of State from supporters over the issuance of the proclamation.

“Let us be clear that it was no favour to Guyana.

In fact, if we trace how the proclamation was issued, it had to be dragged out of him.

It took several acts of protest and also several statements from the international community, threatening the withholding of aid and declaring him unconstitutional to get him to do what he should have done a long time ago; and to get him to do what is legal and constitutional,” Jagdeo stressed.

On this note, Jagdeo reminded that setting the date and issuing the proclamation does not change the status of the caretaker coalition government, which, he said, remains unconstitutional.

In fact, he added that even now, the coalition administration is in “flagrant violation” of the Constitution and the rulings of the courts when the Cabinet, with impunity and almost in an ‘in your face’ kind of way, meets almost every week.

Article 106, which the courts ruled was activated via the December 2018 passage of the No-Confidence Motion against the coalition, states that the Cabinet including the President shall resign and call elections in three months.

Impacts of climate change

O

ver the weekend, the raging Atlantic Ocean hurled its fury at several parts of Guyana, cementing the fact and reminding Guyana that the threat of rising sea levels to our coastlands is real.

In many areas— which have never seen these unprecedented levels of floodwaters— was an awakening that the ocean has since risen and climate change is a stark reality.

Whether we are science sceptics or not about exactly what is driving the process of “global warming”, there can be no doubt about the fact that temperatures over the last century have risen at least one degree Fahrenheit and this has literally fuelled the process that leads to rising sea levels.

This, therefore, means that addressing the challenges of climate change will ultimately require taking action to reduce emissions and taking action to limit climate impacts in an effort to deal with the changes that are expected to occur.

Assessing the impact of climate change on Guyana, the Office of Climate Change observed that there is little doubt that the earth’s climate system is warming as a result of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities, as evidenced by increases in global air and ocean temperatures, rising global sea levels, and widespread melting of snow and ice.

Average global temperatures have increased over the past century, and warming over the past 50 years has been nearly double that of the preceding 100 years.

On the issue of the impacts of climate change on developing countries, it was also observed that continued warming of the atmosphere at the current rate will result in substantial damage to water resources, ecosystems and coastlines, as well as having an impact on food supplies and health. According to the Stern Review, climate change is a grave threat to the developing world and a major obstacle to continued poverty reduction across its many dimensions.

First, developing regions are at a geographic disadvantage: they are already warmer, on average, than developed regions, and they also suffer from high rainfall variability. As a result, further warming will bring poor countries high costs and few benefits. Second, developing countries – including Guyana – are heavily dependent on agriculture, the most climatesensitive of all economic sectors, and suffer from inadequate health provision and low-quality public services.

As a result of the extremely high tides overtopping and breaching sea defences, hundreds of families in affected areas in Regions Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) have lost millions of dollars in damages and livelihoods.

While the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and other local authorities battle to cope with the aftermath, calls are being made to move the capital city and other densely populated areas away from the coast.

Apart from the existing sea defence structures, mangroves are also considered as a primary sea defence. The role of coastal mangroves in Guyana is to dissipate or reduce wave energy along the coastline. They not only complement existing structures, but help with environmental conservation and the cost of maintaining hard structures. As in many coastal regions around the world, mangroves also provide a natural defence against the raging tide and rising sea levels.

While mangroves are subjected to cyclic erosion, studies conducted on Guyana’s coastal mangroves have proven that a mangrove bandwidth of 50 metres to 80 metres is required to reduce a 3-metre high wave to approximately 0.01 metre.

In the areas where mangroves are not present, severe overtopping occurs (along Kingston and Sheriff Streets) which results in increased cost for maintenance works over a period of time.

The Mangrove Action Committee, a volunteer group, identified a number of interventions to be implemented during 2018 that will seek to address these issues. They include public awareness and education programmes on the importance of mangroves, targeting youths through environmental clubs, and engaging the relevant Government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It should be noted that mangroves are protected under the Forestry Act, and as such, it is illegal to destroy mangroves without permission from the Guyana Forestry Commission.

While coastal flooding is by no means isolated to Guyana, ignoring scientific evidence and failing to adapt and prepare will mean lives and livelihoods will continue to be at risk.

Toothpick and 2 Generals helped Venezuelan Opposition Leader survive jail

uring four months in a small military jail cell, Venezuela’s Congress Vice President scratched the days on a wall with a toothpick, held a hunger-strike, and made unlikely friends with two generals who have fallen foul of the socialist Government.

“It was a pretty tough experience,” Opposition Leader Edgar Zambrano, 64, told Reuters of his time in Cell 12A at the Fuerte Tiuna base in Caracas, where he was held, accused of treason against President Nicolas Maduro’s administration.

“We used a lot of mechanisms to survive”.

In one of Venezuela’s highest-profile arrests of recent times, intelligence agents intercepted Zambrano while he was driving away from his Democratic Action party headquarters on May 8.

A dawn appearance on a bridge beside Congress leader Juan Guaido – who invoked the Constitution to assume the interim presidency in January – during a failed military uprising here a week before was the catalyst for his detention.

After Zambrano refused to leave his vehicle, security agents towed him away with a truck. His driver, and three Congress workers who he said were getting a lift to an underground transport station, remain in jail.

“They are no danger to anyone, they were just obeying my order not to open the door,” he said.

Though Zambrano was released two weeks ago after international pressure, his case is still open, meaning he has to report

to a judge every 30 days and is barred from going abroad.

However, he has restarted work at the Opposition-controlled National Assembly, a bastion of efforts to dislodge Maduro.

Even though Guaido is recognised by dozens of nations including the United States, Maduro, who succeeded late President Hugo Chavez, still controls Venezuela thanks to military loyalty and support from Russia and China.

Solitude, silence, punishment

In a lengthy reflection on his imprisonment, Zambrano said he was alone in a three-by-three meter (10-foot by 10-foot) cell, where he used a toothpick he happened to have in a pocket to mark the 135 days before he was set free. He refused food for 11 days and said he left prison 35 kg (77 lb) lighter, with stomach problems.

In Zambrano’s cell block, there were just two others: former Interior Minister Miguel Rodriguez and former Defence Minister Raul Baduel, both one-time Chavez allies who became dissidents.

“Just imagine it! What could I feel between two top-level protagonists of the nation’s disaster and misfortune? Me in the middle, living with these two actors on the right and the left, it was most strange.

“But necessity brought us together. And today they are serious people, critical of the Government”.

Zambrano said he became particularly close to Rodriguez, as they were in

adjoining cells, synchronising meals and exercises, and even praying aloud together. Adding to the irony, Rodriguez used to head the Sebin, the intelligence agency that arrested Zambrano.

Unlike other Maduro foes, who have alleged torture and other mistreatment in jail, Zambrano said he had no complaints about his guards, young men who treated him with courtesy.

“I was abused by the state, not by them,” he said at his parliamentary office.

Citing South Africa and Chile as examples, the former union activist and lawyer said he believes dialogue between Opposition and Government is the only way to resolve Venezuela’s crisis, even though that is an unpopular view among

harder line activists who oppose negotiating with Maduro’s “dictatorship.”

A request to Venezuela’s Information Ministry on Zambrano’s case went answered.

Video footage showed him hugging a dissident soldier on the morning of the April 30 uprising. The Supreme Court accused him and other lawmakers of conspiracy, rebellion and treason – all of which he denied.

A father of two and devout Catholic, Zambrano has also been leading pilgrimages to shrines since his release.

“That was Edgar Zambrano’s promise, because there amid the solitude, the silence of the night, and punishment of the bars, you cling onto faith,” he said, eyes watering. (Reuters)

What false promises would accompany Granger for 2020 presidential run?

Dear Editor, With the issue of the elections proclamation, presidential candidate David Granger has to face his ‘promise kept’ problem.

Mr Granger made a lot of promises in 2015 and did not keep most; he did promise a ‘good life’ and some are living that for sure, but those are Ministers and cronies, I doubt that the electorate will see the 50% salary increase as a promise kept. What then can we expect from Granger in the 2019/20 campaign?

The country has been plastered with snippets of PPP manifesto information: 50 thousand new jobs, reverse the 200 new taxes and get the money flowing again, low-cost house lots, Government support for single parents, cash grants for schoolchildren and other promises are boldly declared. The PPP can do this because many of these promises are reversals of Granger’s policies that have caused hardships, 30 thousand jobs were lost under the Granger regime, and the cash grants to schoolchildren were already a feature of life. The PPP has a plan to return to parity before kicking on with progress.

Granger cannot promise a return to parity, as that would be an admission of great failure and Granger has a history of making promises that are not backed by planning. The adage ‘failing to prepare is to prepare to fail’ applies, but even when plans are prepared, Granger was not able to execute at a high level, the Jubilee celebrations fell flat and were

clouded as the D’Urban Park project was mired in corruption— 600 million is still to be accounted for according to the Auditor General’s report. The CJIA expansion project is suffering the same fate, a fixedprice contract was renegotiated and instead of a new airport terminal, we have a renovated building, fewer air-bridges and inexplicably at USD $30 million higher cost. Every foot of road paved seems to come with a higher than normal bill, a scaled kickback scheme along the Mr 10% lines.

Granger cannot sell himself as an anti-corruption candidate this time around, after failing to find evidence of corruption in 40 forensic audits of PPP-administered ministries and agencies, any corruption he promises to fight will be of his administration’s doing.

Granger knows the taint of corruption hangs heavily in almost every ministry and department of Government. The Attorney General’s Chambers has settled matters for billions of taxpayers’ dollars on a simple demand note, the GRA gave DDL a $3.8 billion tax write-off, which has led to Banks DIH suing the GRA for $28.4 billion as they demand equal consideration and this demand covers only one period, it could end up costing 80 billon when all is said and done. Suicide-appropriate language Dear Editor, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr Karen Boyle was recently quoted in the media as stating that persons “successfully commit suicide” when they feel disconnected and depressed, feel no strong social ties and inadequate social support to face another day and have hope.

While The Caribbean Voice (TCV) has no issue with the reasons given for suicide— although they are neither contextualised nor comprehensive— we take serious issue with the use of the terms ‘successfully’ and ‘commit’ to refer to suicide.

As TCV has continually pointed out, the push for suicide-appropriate language is gathering momentum globally and thus, we are rather disappointed that leading officials within the Ministry of Health continue to propagate terminology that have

been debunked for obvious reasons, especially when one would think that these officials should be in the forefront of requisite change.

For one, how can killing oneself be a success? Just what is successful about such an act, teeming with agony and pain for both victims and survivors? Second, the word ‘commit’ connotes something criminal. And although attempting suicide is still a criminal act on the books in Guyana (because of political gamesmanship), there is nothing criminal about the act of suicide.

Suicide is attempted when the pain becomes unbearable for the victim and those who survive such attempts have always revealed that they never wanted to die; they just wanted the pain to end. How then is it a criminal act to want one’s pain to end?

David Patterson’s explanation of how US$9000 was deposited into his account defies ethics, norms, and logic. Simona Broomes’ children were given direct cash transfers from the Ministry of the Presidency totalling over $20 million, the corruption scandals roll on and on. Faced with these acts of corruption and ethical violations, David Granger did nothing but shuffle his pack; his silence speaks of approval or acquiescence. Granger the corruption fighter will not fly.

Can we see Granger, the staunch advocate for rule of law surface? Would the only President in our history to be cited by the courts as acting in breach of the Constitution try such an audacious bluff?

Would the President who allowed a challenge to be made on the basis that 33 was not a majority of 65 even consider running on a law and rrder platform?

Can a President who issued a Prerogative of Mercy to his Finance Minister to keep him out of jail even contemplate such a move? Stranger things have happened in the silly season, but any move like this would invite ridicule from all quarters.

Granger the security ex-

pert may surface; however, he may not be able to call on British Senior Security Sector Reform Advisor, Mr Russell Combe, who served as his advisor. Relations with the UK have rather broken down since Granger has moved away from the rule of law (see above) and a system of parliamentary democracy. Guyanese are less safe than we have ever been, crime ranging from petty theft to murder have proliferated since 2015.

Nowhere is safe, schoolchildren are held up at gunpoint, home invasions and murders are commonplace and store owners live in fear of ‘customers’. The establishment of a Venezuelan homestead on Guyanese soil is an error that may yet blow up in our faces literally. We can do without Granger’s security ‘expertise’, the plethora of attendance and completion certificates non-withstanding.

The Auditor General’s reports delivered to Parliament on the 30th September 2019 are of great interest to the people of the nation; if/when Parliament comes out of recess, these reports will have to be laid and made public for examination by the people’s representatives. There have been no audited reports for NICIL or GuySuCo since 2015.

The $30 billion GuySuCo

bond is being frittered away without any of the capitalisations of projects being undertaken; no routine expenses are being paid from the bond, the location and allocation of bond funds remain mysteries that the AG’s reports may shed light upon.

Granger ‘the transparency advocate’ will not fly.

David Granger visited the Amerindian village of Pakuri, or as he insensitively referred to it “St Cuthbert’s Mission”. Mr Granger was accompanied by a large contingent of heavily armed policemen in addition to his praetorian guard. Granger, the ‘Man of the People’, will not fly.

The arrest of social media guru Alston Stewart on his way to Guyana is a blow to the Mark Kirton team working out of the Bertram Collins campus.

This team is currently bombarding the populace with ads containing glorious tales of the Brigadier and Mrs Granger as they save the world for snails and whales— with ads of roads yet to be built as a ‘promise kept’. The harsh economic reality precludes belief in such delusions no amount of sponsored ads will fool Guyanese into voting for the incompetent incumbent.

Editor, the tale of the Granger administration

is one of lavish lifestyles: jet setting’ high salaries, plenty perks, abuse of power, little work and corruption with impunity, corruption on a super large scale that defies belief. Mr Granger has a credibility problem that cannot be solved with slogans and jingles; Granger’s lack of ability to govern effectively has been thoroughly exposed and he has no leg left upon which to stand before the populace and proclaim his worthiness to be President of the Republic ever again.

The PPP is carefully rolling out its manifesto which contains the plans behind the promises, for should they let it out carelessly, it will be grabbed

by Granger’s APNU/AFC and touted as their own; after all, the CJIA as an International hub, Guyana as an oil producing country, the Marriott as a centre for commercial tourism and conferences, a bridge over the Berbice river, a paved road from Georgetown to Lethem— those were all whose ideas and projects again?

I cannot wait to see how Granger manifests himself for the 2020 presidential run and what false promises accompany him.

A manageable oil and gas formula for a better economy Dear Editor, Our new-found oil and gas resources should not be used as bargaining chips by any political party. The revenue from these resources belong to all of Guyana and we should work assiduously to ensure equitable access via programmes that would improve the livelihood of all Guyanese, thereby, bringing the largest possible percentage of our citizens to a level playing field.

Socialism should be repudiated, since the regression to any situation where we are dependent on any Government for our livelihood will create a mentality of dependency and invalidate the efforts of those that position themselves via commitment and hard work. It’s like giving prizes to the last place participant in a race.

What is more manageable and will prove fruitful is a scenario where policies and programmes are designed to provide training programmes on tertiary and vocational levels at

zero cost thereby, upgrading our workforce Also, there needs to be easier access to funding for entrepreneurs with viable business models, since it’s proven that the middle class and small businesses do, in fact, drive a developed/developing economy.

The final perspective is that Government and political players should not have unlimited access and control to revenue from oil resources. Their capacity to spend should be limited to a prescribed amount on 5-year projections where the access is determined for the lifetime of their political cycle. And the balance of these revenues should be over watched by an independent, qualified body with several layers of over watch and scrutiny.

This is one of the only viable formulas for long-term success and growth of our new oil and gas Industry. God bless Guyana.

o you feel like the smallest person in your class? Guys and girls who are shorter may feel out of sync with their peers – just as guys who mature earlier may feel strange if they shave first, or girls who get their periods before their friends may feel awkward.

In most cases, teens who are small are probably just physically maturing a little bit more slowly than their friends. Or maybe their parents are smaller and

they take after them.

Occasionally, though, there’s a medical reason why some people grow more slowly than usual.

What’s normal and what’s not

Kids and teens grow and go through puberty at different times. For girls, puberty usually begins between ages 7 and 13. For guys, it often begins a bit later – between 9 and 15.

Some teens develop a lot earlier than their friends (called precocious puberty), whereas others develop much later than other people of the same age (called delayed puberty).

Kids and teens may not grow as fast as their peers for many reasons. If you’re short, you may just have familial (genetic) short stature. In other words, short

Foundation parents tend to have short children. If a doctor finds you have no growth disorder and you’re growing steadily and sexually maturing at the usual expected age, then you can probably expect to grow to a normal size, although you may be somewhat shorter than average.

Teens who have constitutional growth delay grow at a normal rate when they’re younger kids, but they lag behind and don’t start their pubertal devel-

opment and their growth spurt until after most of their peers. People who have constitutional growth delay are often referred to as “late bloomers”.

If a kid or teen appears to have constitutional growth delay, a doctor might take X-rays of bones and compare them with X-rays of what’s considered average for that age. Teens with constitutional growth delay tend to have bones that look younger than what’s expected for their age. These teens will have a late growth spurt and continue growing and developing until an older age. They usually catch up with their peers by the time they’re young adults.

Not getting adequate amounts of protein, calories, and other nutrients

in your diet can also cause growth to slow, as well as a number of other chronic medical conditions such as kidney, heart, lung, and intestinal diseases.

People with sickle cell anaemia may also grow and develop more slowly.

Following the treatment plan worked out with a doctor can help teens with health conditions achieve a more normal growth pattern.

What do doctors do?

Your doctor has probably been charting your growth since you were born to make sure there is a “growth curve” showing steady growth in weight and height. If this curve flattens out, a doctor usually does a thorough physical exam and may order special blood tests and X-rays of the bones.

Your doctor will also look at growth patterns in your family. Teens with familial short stature have inherited this trait from their parents. And teens with constitutional growth delay often have close relatives who were also late bloomers.

Growth conditions like familial short stature or constitutional growth delay usually don’t require any special treatment.

Extra vitamins or special diets won’t make a person with one of these conditions grow any taller or faster.

Occasionally, though, doctors will give hormone treatment — usually testosterone — to guys with constitutional growth delay who are having a rough time waiting for puberty to kick in. The treatments can temporarily increase

growth and development until the guy starts producing puberty hormones on his own.

If a doctor finds that someone has growth hormone deficiency, it can be treated by replacing the missing hormone. The replacement hormone is produced in a laboratory and is given as a daily shot.

Taking the hormone by mouth doesn’t work because the hormone is destroyed by the stomach’s digestive juices. Depending on when the diagnosis is made, treatment usually lasts for several years — until the growth areas of the bones close (after that, no more growth can occur).

It can take weeks or months to notice the effects of growth hormone replacement, but most kids will grow two to five times faster during the first year of treatment than they were growing beforehand. The rate of growth after that is usually somewhat slower, about 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 centimetres) per year.

Recently, growth hormone treatment has been approved for some kids and teens who are not growth hormone deficient but who appear to be headed for a very short adult height (under 5 feet, 4 inches [1.6 meters] for boys and under 4 feet, 11 inches [1.5 meters] for girls). This treatment can help increase somebody’s final height by about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.6 centimetres).

Growth disorders that are caused by other conditions also can be treated. Girls with Turner syndrome can benefit from growth hormone and estrogen therapy. Thyroid med-

ication can help restore a normal growth rate in kids and teens with hypothyroidism. In most cases, growth will also improve with specific treatment of chronic medical conditions that are slowing a teen’s growth.

Dealing with growth disorders

It can be tough having a growth disorder as a teen because it can affect a person’s body image and self-esteem. Talking with a

mental health professional is one way some teens deal with feelings and concerns about their growth.

Your doctor can also be a good resource for advice on your growth pattern. And, although no one has much control over the changes taking place in their bodies during puberty, you can do what you can to keep your body in top shape by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising. eens may have growth problems for other reasons, though.

Growth is controlled by the hormones the body produces.

Many diseases of the endocrine system, which is made up of the glands that produce hormones, can affect growth.

Hormones are secreted by the endocrine glands and carried throughout the body in the bloodstream. The hypothalamus (part of the brain) controls the pituitary gland, which in turn releases some of the hormones that control growth and sexual development. Estrogen and testosterone are important hormones that drive sexual development and function and also play a role in growth.

Hypothyroidism can cause slow growth because the thyroid gland isn’t producing enough thyroid hormone, which is necessary to support normal growth. A major symptom of hypothyroidism is feeling tired or sluggish. A blood test measuring thyroid levels can show if someone has this disorder, which can develop at any time in life and is common in teen girls and women of childbearing age.

Some diseases aren’t caused by the hormones, but they can impact the body’s ability to produce the hormones needed to grow and develop. For example, Turner syndrome is a genetic condition (due to a problem with a person’s genes) that occurs in girls. It is caused by a missing or abnormal X chromosome. Girls with Turner syndrome tend to be short and don’t usually undergo normal sexual development because their ovaries (organs in the lower abdomen that produce eggs and female hormones) don’t mature and function normally.

Another condition that can lead to significantly short stature is dwarfism. Dwarfism results from abnormal growth of the bones and cartilage in the body. In many forms of dwarfism the person has abnormal body proportions, such as noticeably short limbs. Most cases of dwarfism are genetic.

Growth hormone deficiency

One growth disorder that is specific to the hormones that govern growth is growth hormone deficiency (GH deficiency).

This condition involves the pituitary gland, the small gland located at the base of the brain that produces growth hormone and other hormones. If the pituitary gland doesn’t produce enough hormones for normal growth, growth slows down or stops.

GH deficiency can occur at any age, and the most common sign in kids and teens is a slowing of growth to less than two inches (five centimetres) a year. Kids with this disorder usually have normal body proportions — in other words, their bodies look normal, just smaller. Growth hormone deficiency does not affect intelligence or brain function.

The cause of growth hormone deficiency can be an underdeveloped, damaged, or malfunctioning pituitary gland or hypothalamus, which can happen before or during birth or can be caused later by an accident or trauma or certain diseases.

Tumours near the pituitary gland, like craniopharyngioma (pronounced: kray-nee-o-far-un-jee-OH-muh), can also damage the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and affect growth. In most cases, though, the cause of growth hormone deficiency is simply unexplained.

AFC's PM choice Ramjattan not automatic ...caretaker President unsure of “running mate”

he Alliance For Change (AFC) selection of Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan as the prime ministerial candidate in the upcoming elections may not be accepted by the party’s coalition partner, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) regardless of the AFC maintaining that it has already determined he would be given that post.

Granger on Thursday told reporters that Ramjattan has not been given the green light by APNU and the prime ministerial candidacy would be determined after negotiations between the two parties.

“The APNU and the

AFC are now discussing the Cummingsburg Accord of 2015 and this is one of the issues that will have to be discussed. But I cannot say now who I will be running with,” Granger said.

In fact, it is uncertain if the Prime Minister (PM) candidate slot will be granted to the AFC in the elections slated for March 2, 2020. When asked if the PM candidate would be selected from the AFC, President Granger noted: “It is not prudent to anticipate the outcome of negotiations.”

However, Granger confirmed that APNU and the AFC were currently reviewing the 2015 Cummingsburg Accord and were working to produce a “revised” Accord

“The major aspect is that the two groups, the

APNU and the AFC, should abide by the Constitution of Guyana. That is the prin-

cipal foundation of any agreement, nothing in the Accord should collide with the Constitution … but no names (for AFC PM candidate) as yet.”

Earlier this week, Ramjattan had told the media that he remained confident in his supporters ensuring that he was formally declared the Prime Ministerial Candidate in the upcoming elections, regardless of the fact that APNU had not endorsed him to date.

After Ramjattan’s selection as the AFC’s prime ministerial candidate-in-waiting a few months ago, Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson had intimated that APNU

was duty-bound to accept Ramjattan as President Granger’s running mate as long as the Cummingsburg Accord was in effect.

The major party in APNU, the People’s National Congress (PNC) has shown a dogged preference for the incumbent, Moses Nagamootoo. This has manifested in APNU officials making public statements in support of the Prime Minister.

PNC heavyweight and Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence had stated publicly that while the AFC has elected Ramjattan as its next prime ministerial candidate, APNU and the AFC have not met on this new development.

eeks after the Russians issued a claim that Guyana was collaborating with the British to construct a military base to use against the Venezuelan Government – a claim quickly rubbished by the Government – a meeting between Guyana and Russian representatives is being set up.

This was revealed by Foreign Secretary within the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Carl Greenidge, during a press conference on Wednesday. Greenidge explained that although Russia was yet to offer a retraction for its statement, talks were ongoing between the two sides.

ly and unambiguously false,” Greenidge told the media. “I’ve written to the Russian Foreign Minister and although they have not responded publicly, they have within the last few weeks sent a message via the Ambassador on this matter. It’s clear it’s untrue.

“The person that spoke can’t be separated from the Russian Administration, because she’s the official spokesperson. We have been bilaterally close since Independence. I have not seen anything like this from Russia or from fraternal bilateral States, so I am surprised. In the coming weeks, we expect to resolve this matter.”

GDF Captain nabbed with gun, ammo & ganja remanded to prison

uyana Defence Force (GDF) Captain Dominic Gilpin was on Thursday remanded to prison on possession of gun, ammunition and narcotics charges while his alleged accomplice was granted bail when they appeared at the

Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The 30-year-old Army rank was earlier this week nabbed by the Police in his private motor vehicle on the Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown with a large quantity of narcotics, a firearm that he was not licensed to carry, along with a matching magazine for the gun and several rounds of ammunition.

Gilpin, a Coast Guard, and Paul Murray were jointly charged when they made their first court appearance before Magistrate Faith McGusty.

They both pleaded not guilty to the trafficking charge which stated that on September 30, 2019, at the Avenue of the Republic, they had in their possession five

kilograms (11 pounds) of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. The Police also stated that on the same day, Gilpin had in his possession one .32 Taurus pistol, but he was not the holder of a firearm licence in force at the time.

Gilpin was also accused of having two rounds of .32 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence in force at the time.

In court, Gilpin was represented by Attorney-at-Law Latchmi Rahamat while Murray was represented

by Attorney-at-Law Patrice Henry.

Both lawyers contend-

ed that their clients had unblemished criminal records and would adhere to any conditions the court may implement on granting bail.

In presenting the facts to the court, Police Prosecutor Ceon Blackman stated that on the day in question, acting on information, Police ranks intercepted motor car PXX 94 belonging to and driven by Gilpin. Murray was the lone passenger at the time.

The ranks then approached the car, where Gilpin informed the Police that a gun with the matching rounds of ammunition was in the middle compartment.

He then went on to tell the ranks that he was conducting business. The ranks conducted a search of the vehicle and the cannabis was unearthed.

As such, both men were arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station.

The Prosecutor objected to bail being granted.

Murray was, however, granted bail in the sum of $250,000 while Gilpin was remanded to prison. Both men are slated to make their next court appearance on October 17, 2019.

39-year-old man remanded for raping teenage girl

man who allegedly had sexual intercourse with a 14-yearold girl who was left in his care was on Thursday arraigned for the offence at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Jessy Boyal of Waramuri Village, North West District, Region One (Barima-Waini), appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

The charge stated that between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 at Waramuri Village, he engaged in sexual penetration with an underage child. The matter was heard in-camera.

According to information, on the day in question, the child was left in the care of the accused and he allegedly made advances towards her, which resulted in him having sexual intercourse with the child.

Nevertheless, the child later confided in her mother and the matter was reported. An investigation was carried out, and Boyal was arrested and charged.

Boyal was remanded to prison, and his next court appearance was slated for October 7, 2019 when he would appear before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for reassignment.

…PNC shouldn’t be pressured? aretaker “Minister” of Foreign Affairs, Dr Karen Cummings just returned from the UN General Assembly where she represented caretaker “President” David Granger. There she pledged continued support for the Palestine refugees and ringingly declared, “We must continue to encourage the parties to engage in respectful dialogue with a view to a peaceful resolution of this longstanding conflict”.

Yet, immediately upon her return to our dear old, mud land, she announced that the calls by the international community for the PNC-led government to honour the Constitution and proclaim a date for elections were “uncalled for”!! In other words, she was rebuking the US, the UK, the EU, the OAS, the Commonwealth – pretty much half of the world – for mentioning what they saw as a clear violation of international norms of democratic behaviour by the PNC!!

Well, what if Israel tells her that Guyana’s advice for them to negotiate with the Palestinians is “uncalled for”??

Especially when she added, “But you know, we strive to ensure that we don’t interfere in other person’s territory.”

But that’s the rub, isn’t it?? International norms have evolved quite a ways in the last few decades. The world has realised that what begins as “domestic” problems, can quickly escalate into “international” ones. And the best course is to head off these problems before they “explode like a sore full of pus”.

And just as we can advise the Israelis and the Palestinians to work out their problems peacefully, the countries and International bodies mentioned above, not only have the right, but the obligation, to advise the PNC to do the right thing when they see it blatantly traducing the tenets of democracy. Cummings complained that “Elections calls were not necessary”!!!

Really?

The CCJ ruled that the 3-month mandated period for elections after an NCM was on “pause” during the PNC’s appeals and kicked in on June 18. And yet the PNC blithely and ostentatiously ignored the new three-month period which ended on Sept 18, and now Cummings has the temerity to claim that the PNC shouldn’t be “advised”?

Well, she should note that the western powers that have literally kept us afloat – especially the EU which has been funding our sea defences! – also warned that they might’ve cut off their aid.

But honestly, dear readers, this is what happens when you put in a rank amateur to run a sensitive ministry like “foreign affairs”. Her reference about Caricom’s “noninterference” merely highlighted the latter’s shameless repetition of their studied silence during Burnham’s 28-year-old dictatorship.

She should heed the old folk saying, “moon a run till day ketch am”.

The PNC will be caught and thrown ou t on March 2, 2020!! …Greenidge shouldn’t be Foreign Minister?

Barge owner slapped with $100M bill for DHB damage

T

he owner of the barge and tug which slammed into the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) last month, rendering it inoperable for a few days, will have to repay $100M in damages.

Guyana Times understands that the bill was prepared after an assessment to the bridge during impact and remedial works that were done to fix the structure.

While the incident would have occurred one month ago, the vessel remains impounded here in Guyana.

This assessment is devoid of revenue that was lost when the bridge was inoperable for a few days after the incident. This bill will also be forwarded shortly.

On September 2, the barge and tug slammed into the southern side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge just after midnight, thus shifting the spans which con-

nect the structure and causing a shutdown to vehicular traffic.

In the wee hours of that morning, notices were sent out that the structure would be closed for emergency works and the only alternative to cross the Demerara River was via the speedboat service, operating at Stabroek and Vreed-enHoop.

Whilst the boat service would usually commence operations at 06:00h every morning, provisions were made for the commuters to cross earlier. However, both stellings saw an influx of passengers in a rush to meet their destinations.

Later that day, General Manager of the Bridge Corporation, Rawlston Adams and Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson provided clarity on the seriousness of the issue.

The Public Infrastructure Minister told the media that preliminary investigations revealed that the barge was beyond its anchorage location. After the vessel started drifting, a distress call was sent out but no one onboard spoke English. The

crew members were detained as investigations continued.

“The crew and the barge have been detained by the Police…The preliminary assessment from MARAD suspected that the barge was outside its anchorage point.

They also suspected that

the barge was not properly manned. When the barge became adrift, the crew was manned by Cubans and Panamanians. Apparently, it’s a Panamanian registered vessel. They issued a mayday because it was drifting from Diamond-Grove. Very late, they gave the mayday and it was received by the Light House,” Patterson asserted.

He insisted that introspections should be made to prevent such occurrences in the future and they might have to mandate operators to have all barges powered by a tugboat. According to him, 55 water taxis came to the rescue and aided the massive undertaking.

Meanwhile, Adams shared that the barge came into contact with the bridge at two locations, and the structure was shifted from its aligned position between the high and retractor spans.

During the collision, the floating bridge was loaded with a gravel-like material.

“The barge came into contact at two locations, span 13 and again at span 16.

We saw some severe damages. The bridge is completely out of alignment between the high span and the retractor span,” he has said.

Emergency actions were deployed to remedy the situation but it was hindered by unfavourable tidal conditions for a few hours. For the morning period, workers managed to install temporary decking and some of the connecting posts. In total, nine connecting posts were to be changed along with nine anchor chains.

He later added that all marine transits were to be suspended since the unaligned structure presents unpredictability to the operation of the retractor span.

“Resource-trapped” UG fails to attract qualified staff – Deputy VC …says salaries cannot sustain persons of pedigree

espite increased tuition and other related fees at the University of Guyana (UG) in recent times, the institution is still grappling to pay highly-qualified persons to facilitate classes, resulting in many of them leaving.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of UG, Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin on Thursday explained that the institution has been suffering from lack of resources for many years and as such, some of their operations are stymied.

“The University has suffered, like most parts of the country, for many years from lack of resources; not because a lot of resources were not put into the university but

because the country did not have the fiscal space to do everything that we needed it to do”.

She responded to criti-

cisms faced about their competency in publication and research, stating that it is because they have failed to retain individuals who are qualified to fill these roles. Again, the lack of resources is to be blamed.

“This is the kind of thing that happens when you are a resource-trapped university…A lot of time, people would say that ‘UG is not producing research, UG is not producing that kinds of publications that we want to see’.

The reason why this is the case is because we have failed to attract and retain the king of pedigree and the level of staff that we need. That’s just because, again, back to resources”, the Deputy VC noted.

Further, she added that the current salaries paid to their staffers are incapable of financially sustaining them.

There are only some instances where persons stay due to family ties or research work.

Presently, more than half of the staff population have acquired a master’s degree or below. While some hold a doctorate, they are part of the administrative body and are not in charge of daily classes.

“We have not been able to pay the way that was basically attractive so we kept people. The salaries cannot sustain anybody of pedigree being here…The University’s own kind of dysfunctional faculty distribution is something like that and it is not like this in most other places. We have

about 63 per cent of the people working with master’s degrees and below. We have about 30 PhDs in the whole University, which is about 10 per cent and about 50 per cent of those are in higher administration and not teaching,” she related.

The Audit Office of Guyana had contracted an independent company to conduct the much-needed and highly-anticipated audit into UG – in light of allegations of mismanagement of funds.

Back in June, the probe was halted until officials could figure out who would stand the cost of the investigation.

Auditor General Deodat Sharma had noted that the backlog of years which UG did not complete its audited financial statements was a cause for worry.

“The issue [is] UG’s audited [financials] were up to 2017. They’ve now submitted financial statements for 2015. So we still have 16, 17, and 18 due. So until you get those statements and audits up to date, you really can’t do a proper audit, unless you do a special investigation in particular areas,” Sharma was quoted as saying.

Teachers attending CPCE to benefit from 66% increase in stipends

esident trainee teachers who are attending the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) are set to receive a 66 per cent increase in their stipends. This was according to President David Granger during his address on Thursday at the inaugural teachers’ conference.

The Head of State noted that he would have recently met with edu-

cation officials and the administrators of CPCE and instructed that the stipends should be increased.

Although he did not specify when the increases will take effect, the President explained that larger sums of monies are to be pumped into the education sector, after first oil next year.

“We do expect increased revenues from petroleum after 2020 and much of it will go to the Sovereign Wealth Fund but I have announced publicly that a significant portion will be devoted to public education”.

Underscoring the crucial role that teachers play and the importance of their training, he noted that education standards would decline unless there is a core of trained and qualified teachers capable of upholding the standards that are expected.

“Teacher training is vital to preparing our educators for the role which they are expected to play in

ensuring quality and inclusive education for all…I presented only last week, more lab equipment donated by the People’s Republic of China to the CPCE which is responsible for training teachers”.

Additionally, the President said that plans are also in the making to focus on having teachers benefit from tertiary education, in the future.

“Every teacher also will have an opportunity to attend University and to benefit from improved teacher training. Educators are the sinews of the education system. They are central to achieving the aims of education, which are to produce graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills and values not only for their own personal development but for national development…”

“The Chief Education Officer recognises the outstanding contributions of teachers towards the

transformation of the education system, and as such, would like to thank teachers for their invaluable service rendered,” Hutson said in the September 29, 2019 memo.

Usually, the day off is granted on the date of World Teachers’ Day, but since that special day falls on a Saturday this year, the teachers are being given the day off on Friday.

he University of Guyana has inked a collaborative agreement with Trent University for advanced academic and research programmes in sustainable transformation courtesy of CGX Energy Incorporated and Frontera Energy Corporation.

At a launching ceremony on Thursday at the University of Guyana (UG) Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown Campus, it was announced that the partnership will feature doctoral and master’s degrees programmes being pursued.

The 12 individuals will travel to Canada to pursue studies under a fully-paid scholarship. However, the research programmes will involve additional persons.

Upon completion of their studies, the recipients will be required to return to Guyana and serve the university for a period of time.

The programme will run for five years and is worth CDN$5 million. The aim is to equip individuals with the knowledge, who in turn, will train the next generation of highly skilled Guyanese.

As part of the training and research, topics such as water quality, sustainable food and agriculture, Indigenous studies, natural products and chemistry will be magnified.

According to Deputy Vice Chancellor of UG, Professor Paloma Mohamed, the selection of candidates will be fully impartial and dependent on the qualifications of applicants. In the near future, the University will advertise the programmes that will be offered.

“It’s gonna help to create 12 terminal degrees, so master’s level as well as couple of PhDs. So people in the system by open competition. We’re

not handpicking anybody. The best of the best will have to apply and they’ll rise to the top,” Mohammed informed.

According to Vice President of Operations at CGX, Michael Stockinger, local content should be incorporated in country’s operation.

For this initiative, they are willing to support in the technical and financial departments.

“We have a unique perspective, which is, always incorporate local content. From day one, all of our operations have been based in Guyana.

We’re very pleased to incorporate Guyana in all aspects of our business. We consider this initiative ground-breaking and outward looking. We will not be involved in the actual operations of this programme but we will help it both financially and technically,” the Vice President stated.

He further expressed that this paves a way for persons to return with additional qualifications to serve their country.

nically that will be available from oil and gas development”.

Meanwhile, Energy Director, Dr Mark Bynoe lauded initiative by the energy companies, stating that it will build local capacity. Moreover, the importance of corporate responsibility to a company’s credibility was also highlighted.

al mindset can genuinely help those companies seeking to do business in Guyana, to deliver public value outcomes by focusing on how their services can make a difference in our country,” Bynoe related.

All private media should benefit from State ads – Jagdeo

n light of reports that Government has cut the amount of advertisements usually given to the Stabroek News compared to some other national newspapers, former President and current Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo has stated that all private media outfits should benefit equally from the State ads.

The Stabroek News has complained that since July, there has been a “significant” decline in the amount of state ads it receives when compared to Kaieteur News and the State-owned Guyana Chronicle – a move which it says is an attempt to muzzle the media entity.

But speaking at his weekly press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo said, “I think all private media, regardless of where they stand, that they enjoy State [ads]”.

Jagdeo, who himself had come under for doing the same under his presidency, admitted that his approach was wrong at that time.

“We said… more ads will go to the newspapers that had the highest circulation. At that time, it was Kaieteur News and so [that newspaper] was a beneficiary of that. In retrospect, it maybe the wrong decision and I’m saying this today,” he asserted.

Based on his past decisions on this matter, the Opposition Leader noted that going forward, a new People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration will have a new approach in this regard.

“Looking forward, I think we must have, in the new government, an arrangement where all the private media benefit from State assets. State ads must not be used in a punitive manner.

I did not do it in a punitive sense but notwithstanding that I think it was wrong,” Jagdeo posited.

In an article on Sunday, Stabroek News suggested that this reduction in the placement of ads by the Department of Public Information (DPI) may have

been a move to target the newspaper for “its forthright views on the government’s defiance of the motion of no confidence and the requirement for early general elections to be held”.

The newspaper had been critical of the coalition Government for violating the Constitution of Guyana by failing to resign and set a date for elections following the June 18 ruling and subsequent orders on July 10 by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), which had validated the December passage of the No-Confidence Motion.

“An analysis of the ads placed in the four daily newspapers over the last six months has shown a sharp decline in the number of State ads placed per column inches in Stabroek News as of June 2019. There has been no corresponding decline in the Guyana Chronicle or Kaieteur News but a decline has been noted in the Guyana Times,” the newspaper reported.

Stabroek News said it had written the DPI in May about a large outstanding debt for State ads and advised that no new placements would be accepted until a substantial amount was settled. After settlement of a substantial portion of the debt, the publication advised DPI that it can resume normal placement of ads but overtime, observed that the numbers were significantly low.

However, in response to Stabroek News’ complaint, the DPI said the “blockade” imposed by Stabroek News resulted in Government seeking alternative sources to advertise. It said digital media, television stations and radio are giving Government “greater value”.

In addition, the DPI noted that it has paid a total of $177,114,612 in newspaper advertisements payments to the four daily newspapers for the period January 1 to September 19, 2019 and of that amount, Stabroek News received $51,780,354.

Furthermore, the DPI claimed that there is no removal of Government advertising from any newspaper.

“There is no evidence whatsoever to support the false allegation that the Government was stifling

the free press. Any claims to that effect are erroneous, malicious and self-serving,” a statement from DPI de-

tailed.

But graphs provided by the State agency show that while the other three newspapers were getting the bulk of government ads, Guyana Times was getting a portion of ads – the least of the four local newspaper.

According to the graph, between January 1 to September 19, 2019, a total of $177, 114, 612 was paid

by DPI for newspaper ads.

Of that amount, Guyana Times received a mere eight per cent ($13, 450, 099), while Kaieteur News got 37 per cent ($68,130,977); Stabroek News received 30 per cent ($51, 780, 354) and Guyana Chronicle 25 percent (43, 753, 162).

Meanwhile, during the period of June 2015 to September 2019, the graph highlights that Guyana Times only received 10 per cent ($72, 175, 528), while Kaieteur News got 27% ($207, 373, 258); Stabroek News with 26 per cent ($196,121,278) and Guyana Chronicle received 37 per cent ($292, 488, 281).

Revamp of education system needed to cater for evolving society – inaugural teaching conference launched

ertiary educators are currently meeting to discuss options and initiatives that can be implemented in the local education system that would cater for a dynamic and changing environment.

The opening ceremony of the two-day inaugural teaching conference kicked off on Thursday at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown where scores of educators turned up to tackle the challenges of teaching in a multi-faceted society.

University of Guyana Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr Paloma Mohamed Martin highlighted that existing university students and potential students were dealing and will have to deal with a level of complexity that was hyper dynamic and technologically constructed.

“They are dealing with

the redefinition of self, space and time in a way that we will never be able to fully comprehend. They are dealing with a level, with constant disruption in a way that we would have to teach them how to handle and so if that is the student of the future, who is the teacher of the future going to be?

Is it any of us in the room?

Is it any of us who is thinking about that and what do we do about it?” Mohamed Martin stated.

She explained that almost 3000 students graduate annually since that was all the University could physically cater for. Those students are generally urban-centric and are mostly Guyanese.

“Investment in education is going to be what we have to do, but the question is if we are dealing with the changing student, changing environment, the complexity, what is the best investment for education and what is the best impact and where do we spend our energy? Thinking of the changing migration patterns of the country, what we have going on right now – forced migration, environmental migration, circular migration, political migration across our borders, those students are going to be very different in the future; they are going to be culturally different, language different, they are go-

ing to be very different,” the Deputy Vice Chancellor noted.

Dr Mohamed Martin further emphasised and reiterated the need for the expansion of the country’s education system which would cater for students from varying backgrounds and cultures.

“And what does this mean for the University of Guyana, and the feeder for the UG, which is all across the education system? It means we have to think about how to deliver to various parts of the country, about 30,000 people a year over the next 20 years.

So how do you go from 3000 to 30,000? This is a question we are grappling with and I would like to hear some things about that in the next few days,” the educator stated.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Nicolette Henry noted that the inaugural teaching conference was opportune for the sharing of ideas on the future of higher education in Guyana.

She added that the initiative was one which allowed for a “constructive mechanism for preparedness for evolving growth and being able to adequately address the imminent evolution with intellectual profession and technological skills that will maximise benefits as well as ensure sustainability…”

GNBS to implement newly-approved electrical standards in 2020

I

n order to reduce the importation and use of substandard electrical products which often result in damages and fires, the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), in partnership with the Government Electrical Inspectorate (GEI), has developed a number of standards which will see the supervision of various electrical items being imported, resold and used throughout the country.

A total of 31 national standards were developed by the Bureau’s electro-technical committee, and were later approved by the National Standards Council to stipulate requirements for the electrical fittings and equipment.

In light of this, the GNBS on Wednesday engaged private and public stakeholders during a forum on what is required when importing and reselling electrical equipment now that these standards were made compulsory.

These requirements, together with the role of the GNBS in the compliance process, were presented

by GNBS Head of Product Compliance Department, Shailendra Rai in his opening remarks at the event.

quired to register with the GNBS to import and sell these products, we are also advising that importers and dealers acquire the relevant standards for products they intend to import and familiarise themselves with the requirements of these standards…these products will be inspected at the time of importation and at the sale outlets to ensure compliance,” Rai conveyed.

The Head of Department further noted that a request was received from the GEI to develop standards relating to electrical installation products, primarily as a result of the importation and sale of substandard electrical products on our local

market.

As a result, a number of standards were developed by the electro-technical committee.

Meanwhile, in expressing satisfaction with the partnership and development of the new standards, Business Minister Haimraj Rajkumar highlighted that the approval and implementation of same pushes Guyana forward to national development.

“This forum is very important and necessary and one step in the direction of Guyana embracing quality standard as a tool in national development.

The Ministry of Business through the National Bureau of Standards is pleased to partner with the Government Electrical Inspectorate to adapt the 31 standards for electrical installations out of concern about the alarming of substandard electrical products on the market”.

Some of the standards titles include: seasonal and holiday decorative products, lamp holders, armoured cables, panel boards, surge protective devices and grounding and bonding equipment, among others.

The Bureau is expected to commence the enforcement of these standards on February 1, 2020.

armers who operate along the Mahaica Creek are calling for the Regional Administration of Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) to reactivate the sluice at De Hoop-Number 10 Village to release the salt water.

The salt water on the land was a result of a breach to the sea defence at Dantiz, Mahaica.

The canal, which serves as one of the main drainage canals in the De Hoop area, is filled with salt water and as such, farmers are forced to open and close the sluice.

Regional Chairman Vickchand Ramphal met with the frustrated and desperate farmers.

“They are very worried about the situation since salt water is getting into the drainage and irrigation system within that area.

There is need to have the canals flushed on time so as to remove the salt water from the system”.

Local company to submit proposal for Linden airstrip rehabilitation, reforestation projects

he National Aerodrome Inc, a local company, will submit a proposal for the Linden Airstrip Rehabilitation Project and the Linden Reforestation and Green Energy Project to the Government.

The company on Thursday received full support from the Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Democratic Council (RDC) through a vote following a consultation process, which was facilitated by its Secretary, Gary Best.

Best, in delivering the proposal for the Airstrip Rehabilitation Project, emphasised that the initiative, which falls under the Linden Airstrip Development Project, was in keeping with Government’s Green State Development Strategy.

The proposal is expected to be handed over to Government shortly and, according to Retired Rear Admiral Best, it focuses on key aspects such as managing natural resources, supporting economic resilience, and building human capital.

“This project is necessary to close the gap between air and inter- air services. There is a gap because you don’t have air services here. This airstrip when developed will provide those air services,” he pointed out.

He further noted that the project is necessary to diversify the Linden economy and reduce overcrowding at the Eugene F Correia International Airport.

It will allow Linden to maximise the opportunity for a successful air inter-air business and associated service industry. In this regard, he pointed to the need for strong strategic partnerships to be developed for the success of the initiative.

He said this would lead to increased economic diversification as inter-air services were developed between the various Regions thus creating an alternative to road services and overcrowding.

“Imagine three, four years down the line, we are moving aircraft between the regions ... so the objective is to develop the Linden airstrip to ensure we have an alternate service to increase air service and economic diversification within the economy,” he stated.

the company wanted to commence with upgrading the airstrip, building a small multi-purpose building for air traffic control and offices as well as a single hangar with a concept to sublease space for operators to construct hangars using the Ogle Airport model. This, he said, will eventually lead to development of Linden’s airstrip into a small aerodrome. “...with this is the opportunity to develop a pilot school for pilot training right here in Linden,” he noted as he pointed to opportunities for agro- processing, warehousing, furniture manufacturing and other industries. The project, he said, will also provide employment opportunities in both technical and non- technical areas. Once it comes to fruition, he said the upgrading of the airstrip will be on a payback basis from the company to Government.

The total projected cost is $381 million within the first five years while the total projected revenue is $319 million within the first five years and $1.4 billion within the second five years. The projected cost for the runway, Best noted, is $100 million, while the multi-purpose building will cost $210 million and the hangar approximately $70 million.

Paris Police employee stabs 4 to death in Force HQ before being shot dead

45-year-old IT assistant at the Police headquarters in central Paris went on a knife rampage inside the building on Thursday, killing three Police officers and an administrative worker before he was shot dead by an officer, French officials said.

Officials did not say anything about the motive for

the attack and they said they were still trying to discover if there was a terrorism link.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he had spent two hours at the Police headquarters to show his support. “Today at midday in France, a real drama took place,” he said late on Thursday at a forum with voters in southern France.

“I wanted to be at their side,” he said of the police officers in Paris. “They are in a state of shock,” Macron said, before inviting the audience at the forum to join him in a minute’s silence.

In a statement quoted by local media on Thursday, Abdul Mahdi’s office said the prime minister was “continuing contacts” with protesters in a bid to end the political crisis and “return to normal life”.

Abdul Mahdi was prepared to meet with “representatives of peaceful demonstrators to consider their legitimate demands”, the statement added.

The announcement came as 4,000 protesters rallied in the Baghdad, defying a government-enforced curfew to call again for improved services, more jobs and an end to widespread corruption.

Honduran President denies protecting brother caught in US drug probe

onduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said on Thursday that he had never intervened to protect anybody, after his brother was accused of smuggling tons of cocaine into the United States for years under Hernandez’s protection.

“Nobody is above the law,” Hernandez told a news conference in the Honduran capital. “I’ve never intervened, nor will I, to protect anybody – not friends, nor fellow party members, nor family members – absolutely nobody”.

The trial of Hernandez’s brother, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez, began on Wednesday in federal court in New York. The politician, arrested in Miami last year, faces charges of drug conspiracy and possessing illegal weapons.

President Hernandez, who began his second term in January 2018 amid allegations of electoral fraud, has not been charged with a crime. He has denied involvement in drug trafficking and said he was a target of a “dirty smear campaign”

by opponents, including drug traffickers and politicians.

The trial for his brother is unfolding as the Hernandez administration faces intense pressure from US President Donald Trump to curb migration to the United States from the crime-wracked and impoverished country.

Argentina’s Holocaust Museum takes custody of seized Nazi relics

rgentina’s Holocaust Museum has taken custody of a huge trove of Nazi artefacts seized in a house raid in the capital, Buenos Aires, two years ago.

A bust of Adolf Hitler is among the 70 items investigators had found.

Another was a head-measuring device – a relic of pseudoscience used to supposedly measure racial purity.

The items were found hidden behind a false wall at the home of a collector in 2017. He said they were replicas but experts say they

are authentic.

It is legal to own Nazi objects in Argentina, as long as they are not used to incite hatred.

But the owner has been charged with “owning pieces of illegal origin” because they are suspected of having been smuggled into Argentina.

Historians believe as many as 11 million people were murdered across Europe during the Holocaust orchestrated by Germany’s Nazi Party – six million of whom were targeted because they were Jewish.

After the regime fell

in 1945, some of the highest-ranking Nazi officials fled to Argentina including the so-called “Angel of Death” Josef Mengele and Adolf Eichmann.

The Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires says the hoard of items found in 2017 will be added to its exhibits.

The objects encouraged “hate, death and destruction,” says Director Marcelo Mindlin, but will go on display “in the service of transmitting democratic values, education and the fight for memory so tragedies like the Holocaust are not repeated”.

Mayank Agarwal's double-hundred grinds South Africa into dust I

ndia assumed total control of the Vizag Test on day two with their openers pressing home the advantage from day one and their spinners making clear the difference in class between both teams. For 136 long overs, South Africa seemed to be the mercy of the batsmen's adventure for wickets, but the moment R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja began to operate, the drift, the dip and then the turn made the pitch look much more dangerous than it had been.

Mayank Agarwal turned his maiden Test century into a double, Rohit Sharma fell just short of one himself; together they added 317, the third-highest opening stand for India. The wearing pitch made it difficult for the remaining batsmen to press the scoring rate, but India had enough on the board to ask South Africa to bat 20 overs on the second evening.

Bowling for the first time in international cricket this year, Ashwin took 13 balls to bowl Aiden Markram through the gate. South Africa were three down by stumps.

Rohit and Agarwal resumed with promise of more punishment, and South Africa sabotaged themselves by dropping Rohit in the fifth over of the day before missing a run-out opportunity too. Rohit seemed mindful of the time lost to rain on the first day and kept attacking the bowling. It also allowed Agarwal to play the second fiddle and ease his way to his maiden Test hundred. Before Rohit was stumped when playing a forward-defensive, he had added 61 in 71 balls on the second morning.

Agarwal's was a properly paced Test innings and just reward for his toil in domestic cricket that made it impossible for the selectors to look away. He was never too slow, and kept accelerating gradually even as wickets fell at the other end. Cheteshwar Pujara got a beauty from Vernon Philander first ball after lunch, Virat Kohli got one that stopped in the pitch, and Ajinkya Rahane added another low score at home by hitting straight to cover. But at the other end, Agarwal never let things stall. His first hundred took 202 balls, the next 115 came in 159 balls. He matched Rohit six for six: the 12 hit between them were the highest for an India opening

pair.

With 38 career sixes already, Rohit was level with Navjot Sidhu at No. 9 among Indian sixhitters. The two tied with coach Ravi Shastri for the fifth-highest number of sixes a Test innings for India. Trying to hit a seventh, Agarwal deposited a Dean Elgar full toss to deep midwicket. Even before the bonus wicket, Elgar was the highest wicket-ticker in India among the current South Africa squad. No bowler looked good enough to challenge, lacking both consistency and penetration.

India promoted Jadeja looking for quick runs but it was apparent the pitch had started to play tricks and that it was not going to be easy to score at will. Not only had Rohit and Agarwal made the most of the best batting conditions, they had done so quickly enough to give India enough time to declare.

Immediately batting became a treacherous occupation. Brought on in the fourth over, Ashwin drew movement in the air, which accentuated the effect of turn off the pitch. It also threatened both edges. At the other end, Jadeja troubled the batsmen with his pace and quick turn, giving them little time to adjust. The revs put on the ball were unmistakably higher than South Africa's spinners did, and the results were there.

Markram was made to play outside the line he had committed to as Ashwin's drift took the ball away from him, creating a gap between the bat and pad. Then the ball turned through that gap to knock back the off stump. He went around the wicket to undo Thenius de Bruyn, who seemed to be mindful of the drift and the angle when he played outside the line of the offbreak. The turn took the inside edge for a superb catch by Wriddhiman Saha, who, in his first Test in 22 months showed his mastery behind the stumps.

This was Ashwin's 71st wicket with the first new ball in Test cricket. Since his debut, only Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Philander and Trent Boult have taken more. Ashwin also has a

Andre Russell, Glenn Maxwell but no AB de Villiers for main Hundred draft A

ndre Russell, Glenn Maxwell and Harbhajan Singh are among the 165 overseas players to have registered for the inaugural draft of The Hundred, ESPNcricinfo can reveal.

The first handful of overseas stars who have signed up for the tournament were released on Tuesday, and included many of the biggest names on the T20 circuit, including Rashid Khan, Chris Gayle, David Warner, Aaron Finch and Babar Azam.

The full list of overseas players ahead of the main player draft on October 20 includes players from 11 different countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland and Nepal.

The most notable absentee comes in the form of AB de Villiers, who had previously expressed his interest in playing in the competition. De Villiers said in January that he was open to playing in the tournament, but ESPNcricinfo understands that he has no plans to do so.

It is understood that de Villiers’ primary concern is not about money - the top band of draft picks will be paid £125,000 for their involvement in the tournament - but instead scheduling, with each team’s eight group games spread out over the course of a month rather than a shorter time period.

He is due to play in the Big Bash League this winter for Brisbane Heat, and remains one of the most sought-after figures on the global T20 circuit, so his non-involvement represents something of a blow to the competition.

As anticipated, India’s white-ball stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have not entered the draft, in line with the BCCI’s refusal to allow active internationals to play in overseas domestic leagues that rival the IPL. Harbhajan is the only Indian player to have registered, and may have to announce his retirement from international cricket if he is picked up.

That said, the full list of overseas players still includes the vast majority of the world’s top T20 players, and the tournament comes during a quiet period in the Future Tours Programme.

Eight players have set their reserve price at the highest possible salary of £125,000 (USD155,000). They are the Australian trio Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc and David Warner, South Africans Quinton de Kock, Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada, and T20 legends Lasith Malinga and Chris Gayle.

Seventeen overseas players have entered with a reserve price of £100,000 (USD124,000), including Harbhajan, Russell, Maxwell, Rashid Khan, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Sandeep Lamichhane, Shahid Afridi, Dwayne Bravo, Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard.

Players with a £75,000 (USD93,000) base price include Dale Steyn, Babar, Marcus Stoinis and Mohammad Hafeez. Nicholas

ANSA McAL confirms inaugural Community Cup Championships

amal Baird, ANSA McAL’s Dragon Stout Brand Manager, has officially confirmed that the inaugural ‘Community Cup’ Championships will be undertaken by that company, and there are only a few systems and structures left to be finalized in this regard.

The former football player and current sporting enthusiast made this revelation via an official press release, wherein he declared that the four-day elimination tournament is slated to commence on November 15th at the National Gymnasium.

Sixteen teams from various environs will compete for over $500,000 in prizes.

The grand finale is pencilled for December 6th.

Among the teams that are expected to feature in these maiden championships are Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Leopold Street, Bent Street, Tiger Bay, Albouystown, Melanie-B, Showstoppers, North East La Penitence and Back Circle.

A product of the Fruta Conquerors Academy in Tucville, Baird explained that the overall objective of the tournament is to align the emerging brand with

the respected and renowned grassroots movement.

he 2019 Berbice Cricket Board/ANSA McAL Stag Beer 50-Over Cricket Tournament continued last weekend with five matches being played.

Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt Flour, Tucber Park Cricket Club, Albion Community Centre, Upper Corentyne Cricket Club and the Young Warriors Cricket Club all recorded victories to advance to the playoff stage of the tournament, which commences tomorrow.

Tucber Park Cricket Club, RHT Namilco Thunderbolt Flour and Upper Corentyne emerged as the respective top teams in zones ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’, while Blairmont Community Centre, Young Warriors Cricket Club and Albion Community Centre were the respective runners-up.

National Player Gudakesh Motie stroked a brilliant century for Albion Community Centre versus Skeldon Titans, while outstanding performers in that match included Kevin Sinclair, Devon Clements, Martin Singh, Lakeram Latchman and Viendra Gooniah.

At the Area ‘H’ Ground in Rose Hall Town, Police Sports Club won the toss and elected to bat. They were restricted to 94 all out in 20.3 overs, with Paul Tyndall’s 19 and Grisean Grant’s 25 being chiefly responsible for that score. Former Guyana Under-10 Player Sylus Tyndall took 3 for 40 and Kevin Sinclair took 3 for 12 as main wicket- takers for the Rose Hall Town Thunderbolt Flour team.

In replying, RHT Thunderbolt Flour lost West Indies Under-19 Selectee Kevlon Anderson for 07 and Eon Hooper for a duck; but Sinclair, having taken 3 for 12, returned with the bat to score 60 not out.

Former national player Delbert Hicks, who stroked a century in the second round, was a silent partner in a 3rd wicket stand of 70 as RHT Thunderbolt Flour finished on 98 for 2 from 12.4 overs.

At the Chesney Ground, Albion Community Centre defeated Skeldon Titans by 259 runs. The Albion Club scored 378 all out in 48 overs, with Gudakesh Motie’s 124 (13x4,4x6), Sarwan Chaitnarine’s 64, Devendra Latchman’s 35, and Karran Arjpaul’s 20 being chiefly responsible for the score.

C. Clarke took 4 for 58, and Junior Blair took 2 for 76.

Skeldon Titans scored 119 all out in 34.2 overs. G. Nauth contributed 38, and Junior Blair 14. Kevin Umroa took 4 for 15, Gudakesh Motie took 2 for 39, and Beshawn Surujnarine took 3 for 36.

At the Rose Hall Canje Ground, Tucber Park defeated West Berbice by six wickets. Rain having reduced the match to 35 overs per side, West Berbice scored 150 for eight, with Devon Clements, a former National Youth All-rounder taking 3 for 24, Martin Singh taking 2 for 28, and Nial Smith, Danien Vantull and Kwesi Mickle each taking a wicket.

Tucber Park Cricket Club replied with 155 for 4, with Singh completing a five-round match with 57 and Maxie De Younge’s 22 and Anthony D’Andrade’s 21 adding useful runs.

Young Warriors Cricket Club defeated Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club by 115 runs. The match was reduced to 35 overs per side due to early morning heavy rainfall, but Young Warriors Cricket Club chalked up 205 for 8 after being at 29 for 3 in the sixth over.

At the Port Mourant Ground, Upper Corentyne defeated Port Mourant Cricket Club by 53 runs.

Upper Corentyne scored 198 all out in 38 overs, with Lakeram Latchman contributing 42, Viendra Gooniah 37, and Amar Deo Haimchand 31. Arif Chan took 4 for 35, and Mahendra Budhram 4 for 20.

Port Mourant were all out for 145 scored in 43 overs. Mahendra Budhram made 31, while Raju Singh made 20. Lakeram Latchman took 3 for 21, and Viendra Gooniah took 3 for 20.

In fixtures for tomorrow’s games, Tucber Park Cricket Club will battle Young Warriors Cricket Club at Cumberland, while RHT Thunderbolt Flour will play against Albion Community Centre at Area ‘H’ Ground. he Berbice Cricket Board-organized Let’s Bet Sports 100 balls Cricket Tournament continued last week with major matches being played across the county.

Heavy rainfall affected most of the matches in the New Amsterdam/Canje sub-zone, but all of the matches in zones ‘A’ and ‘B’ were played.

The Let’s Bet Sports tournament involves hosting four different tournaments: for teams in West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne areas. A champion team will emerge from each area, and the four champions will play in another tournament to decide the overall Berbice Champion.

Among the teams advancing to the third round of matches are Rose Hall Town Bakewell, Tamarind Root, Blairmont, D’Edward, RH Tigers, No 70 A, No 64 Fighting Marines, No 72 All Stars, and No 68 Turn Team.

The Let’s Bet Sports tournament continues next week Sunday, and is on schedule to be completed by the end of November. The Guyana Lottery Company has pumped $1.1 million into hosting the five tournaments. A total of 80 teams are involved in the tournaments, making it the largest cricket event in the West Indies.

T

he four-team lineup for the quarterfinal play of the 2019 Limacol Football Tournament was completed on Wednesday night when Riddim Squad and Fruta Conquerors FC Under-20 sealed crucial victories.

The last 2 games to determine the quarterfinalists were played at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue, and saw Riddim Squad taking on Mahaica Determinators in the first encounter while Fruta Conquerors battled

Timehri Panthers in the second encounter.

The first encounter turned out to be an extra-long affair in which neither Riddim Squad nor Mahaica Determinators could find a goal to break the deadlock. Riddim Squad’s Kevin Gordon was the first to find the back of the net, in the 12th; but Eion Abel equalized for the East Coast outfit in the 23rd minute.

Thereafter, the encounter remained at the 1-1 score, with both teams avidly hunting the winning goal.

A few near misses later, regulation time expired and the game was plunged into ex-

tra time.

The added half-hour did not produce a winner, thus the resort was to a penalty shootout. With both sides consistently hitting the mark, the encounter moved to sudden death shots, where Riddim Squad prevailed t o book their semifinal spot.

“It was a hard game, as I said, but we came out on top. Yeah, we need to work more hard and come out and capitalize on our game,” Oak said.

In the second fixture, the Fruta Conquerors’ Under-20 team extended their unbeaten run in the 2019 edition of this tournament with another comprehensive win, this time over the Timehri Panthers.

Nicolas Mc Arthur continued in fine form as he netted another brace with goals in the 5th and 11th minutes.

Mc Arthur had a handful more of tries, but the offside was often his enemy.

Timehri Panthers did well to hold off Fruta Conquerors’ quickfire scoring, but they could not contain Ryan Hackette in the second half, as he found the back of the net in the 75th.

Timehri’s consolation goal came in the 90th minute off the boots of Junior Adams.

As such, the Under-20 outfit stormed into the

semifinal with a 3-1 victory.

The semifinal games will be contested on Saturday October 5 at the same venue, where Fruta Conquerors will face off with Riddim Squad at 19:00hrs and Pele FC will take on Santos Under-20 at 21:00hrs.

resident of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Wayne Forde, conducted an official visit to the Essequibo–Pomeroon Football Association (EPFA) over the period September 27-28, 2019, and there conducted some key activities to promote football development in Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

It is expected that the community will, in future, be hosting night games at that venue.

2): Paying a courtesy call on Region 2 Executive Officer (REO) Dennis Jaikarran to discuss football development within the region, and exploring the potential for future collaboration in this regard.

Among the highlights of his visit were the following activities: 1) kick-off of the first floodlights football tournament between Queenstown FC and Mainstay FC at the Queenstown Football Ground on September 27. This field was recently lit by the Regional Democratic Council in partnership with the GFF.

The REO subsequently identified in Henrietta Scheme a field which will be leased to the GFF and developed as an exclusive football venue. The office of the EPFA will be located at this venue as well.

3) Meeting business leaders within Region 2 to discuss several opportunities for partnership with the EPFA.

uyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) outplayed the Jamaica Tallawahs to secure a comfortable 77-run victory at the National Stadium, Providence.

GAW continued their record-breaking season with nine wins in as many matches, in the latest of which Shoaib Malik led the way with an unbeaten 73, while among themselves the spinners shared eight wickets in 15.3 overs that leaked only 75 runs.

Tallawahs rock GAW top order In what was considered a dead rubber, important to the GAW only because they looked to take their momentum forward, the GAW batting lineup was tested. Oshane Thomas and Derval Green were on a roll as they reduced their hosts to 8-4. In the fifth ball of the GAW innings, Thomas generated some good pace to destroy the stumps of Brandon King; and with the very next ball, he sent Shimron Hetmyer back for a golden duck. Steaming in at 143.5kph, Thomas angled one away, and though the ball missed the outside edge, Hetmyer was unlucky.

Bowling the second over for Tallawahs, Green struck gold with his first ball, shattering the stumps of Chandrapaul Hemraj, who also walked back for a golden duck. The fourth wicket in the space of four balls came when Green trapped Pooran at the crease with an inswinger.

After two overs of misery for GAW, Thomas continued to clock in at a speed in excess of 90 miles per over, but Sherfane Rutherford and Shoaib Malik revived the innings.

a sweet inside-out six over extra cover. He also welcomed Khan with a reverse sweep that went for four.

Malik, meanwhile, was at his elegant best, rotating the strike and conquering the spinners.

Rutherford’s innings of 45 from 43 balls came to a close when local boy Trevon Griffith took a stunning catch in the deep. The Enmore lad had by then hit five fours and one six in a well-constructed innings.

With the score on 90-5, Malik lost Chris Green for two and the GAW were reduced to 93-6 after 13.5 overs.

Malik reached his halfcentury in 35 balls, after shifting gears in the 16th over and smashing Dwayne Smith for a six and a four. He continued to show his class by taking Thomas to the cleaners in the 19th over, which yielded 26 runs. GAW set to battle TKR tonight After defeating the TKR by 19 runs in their first outing of the 2019 season, GAW will meet the defending champions tonight, Friday October 4, from 20:00h. TKR have lost five matches, and will be looking to bounce back after their loss against Tridents.
