oments after executing a brazen daylight robbery on a Chinese Supermarket along Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, one of four armed men was cornered and apprehended at Guyhoc Park, with the assistance of public-spirited citizens.

According to reports, the four men armed with handguns entered the supermarket at about 12:00h under the pretext of making a purchase. After some time one of the men pounced on the cashier, demanding that he hand over his mobile phone and other valuables, including cash.

The other gunmen reportedly ordered the other employees and customers to lie on the floor. After robbing the supermarket,

the men escaped on pedal cycles. The owner of the supermarket explained that during the robbery, he attempted to contact the police via 911 but to no avail.

The police he noted arrived after the bandits had escaped but reviewed the CCTV footage taken of the robbery.

However, the men were subsequently cornered by residents who contacted the police. Several shots were discharged by the bandits but the police managed to arrest one of the men who had some of the stolen items in his possession.

The others escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash, phone cards, cellular phones, jewellery and other items.

The police are searching for the others.

uyanese living in the hinterland regions would soon be able to come up to par with those on the coastland in terms of technology, as Government has committed to making Internet access readily available for them in the not too distant future.

It is hoped that the new initiative, which made its kick start on Friday with the signing of contracts, would also put Guyana on the path of technological growth.

Government, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), entered into what is said was a crucial agreement with the consultancy firm of Detecon International, to conduct a needs assessment for the project which will be rolled out in remote communities.

Minister Telecommunication Cathy Hughes, UNDP Resident Representative Kadija Musa and Detecon representative Stephen Dieter signed the project, which will be funded by the Guyana Redd+ Investment Fund.

Minister Hughes said Guyana has for many years been lagging behind the rest of the world, and even the Caribbean, technologically.

The project is a baseline study to determine, among other things, what infrastructure, technical capacity and legal framework already exists and what is needed in poor, remote and unnerved areas in Guyana. The analysis will also set the stage for a more expansive programme. “This project has a very unique

and specific target audience and that is the provision of ICT access to hinterland, poor and remote communities�. Minister Hughes said it is widely known that what occurs on the coast and the hinterland regions vary vastly, especially in areas of education, ecommerce and commerce development, adding that hinterland communities have not been able to be on par.

According to Minister Hughes, with the project getting underway, hinterland residents; particularly those who are carrying local businesses, will have a wider scope through the Internet to market their products.

UNDP Resident Representative Khadija Musa said the UNDP responded to a request made by the Guyana Government to lend its support in the procurement process for the project.

Musa said ICT remains an important technology which will bring the people of Guyana together. She informed that the UNDP conducted a competitive international bidding process. It was through this process that the consultancy firm, Detecon, was successful. The evaluation panel, she said, consisted of technical experts, including UNDP and Government.

Representative of Detecon, Stephen Dieter said his company was willing to work with Guyana to bring the country to that competitive platform.

The team carrying out the consultancy will be led by German, Stephan Dieter. The firm won the bid to conduct the baseline study for the projects which stands at a cost of some US$534,000.

Guyana faces no immediate impact from Brexit – Greenidge

F

ollowing United Kingdom’s (UK) majority vote to exit the European Union (EU) on Thursday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge has stated that Guyana will not face any immediate impact.

At a media conference on Friday, the vice President explained that there is no expectation that the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group, of which Guyana is a member, will be directly affected by the Brexit decision.

He further pointed out that Guyana is a party to the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between the Caribbean and the EU, as well as the Cotonou Agreement between ACP and EU. These agreements, he asserted, are legally binding commitments to member states.

“There is not likely to be any short-term adverse consequences by way of a curtailing of resource or resource flows or curtailment of access of, let us say sugar or any other commodity into the European Union, whatever may be the case in relation to Britain,” the Guyanese Foreign Affairs Minister posited.

Two days ago, 51.9 per cent of UK voted on a referendum to leave the trade bloc. This was despite a 48.1 per cent vote from London, Scotland and Northern Ireland, who were backing staying in EU. When asked about Brexit, Greenidge told reporters that the exit was complicated and that the implications are not immediately known. In fact, he stated that it is hard to predict what would happen past the next four years.

To this end, the Minister outlined that the future of market access for Guyana’s products will depend highly on UK’s trade negotiations.

“For specific products, you may have some hiccups but that may depend on exactly what Britain itself negotiates in relation to the European Union,” he explained.

According to the EU, the 11th EDF, which spans from 2014 to 2020, has a budget of €30.5 billion. This is an increase from the €22.7 billion in the 10th EDF, which covered the period 2008 to 2013.

Moreover, when questioned about the fate of the multibillion dollar project, of which Guyana is in line to benefit from some $16 billion in grant resources, promised to Caribbean nations last year by Prime Minister David Cameron

during a visit to the region, Greenidge reasoned that this will depend on the UK Government and the economic standing of the country.

However, at a media conference in Guyana last month, UK’s Minister of Africa, Caribbean and Overseas Territories, James Duddridge, during a familiarisation tour of the region, had stated that Britain’s exit from the EU will not change relations with the Caribbean overnight.

“In reality, this is not going to change things overnight…I don’t think that the relationship with Guyana will change that dramatically. Guyana will still

be a friend of the United Kingdom and will still receive funding from the United Kingdom and actually, any funding that Guyana may actually get through the European Development Fund is because it is a developing nation-State not because of any special relationship with the UK,” the UK Minister stated.

Furthermore, he had remarked that the UK will need to refocus where it needs to project its international interests.

One of the options is to re assert ourselves within the Commonwealth, within the Anglosphere and within the large gross economies around the world.

Resuscitating the musical culture of Guyana

T

he musical culture of Guyana, like so many other facets of Guyanese life, has suffered a serious decline and perhaps the time has come for various stakeholders to review the situation with the aim of ensuring that the necessary action is taken to remedy the situation.

Until about a generation ago, there was far more variety and also stronger evidence of classical music, whether Western or Indian. Today, most of the music which one hears on the radio and television and that is being played in live performances, tends to be American or American influenced. Percussion tends to dominate.

Another musical strand which is now popular in Guyana and is heard on the minibuses is Jamaican music. Most of the Jamaican music one hears in the public transport and at village dances and parties tend to be below the level of Bob Marley and often has a strong streak of vulgarity, with some even promoting abuse of our women folk. Already Guyana is experiencing a high level of domestic violence and such music negates the strenuous efforts being made by the Government and civil society actors to address this scourge.

In relation to Indian music, the same trend has occurred: Bollywood predominating and the ignoring of the rich and ancient Indian musical culture.

Added to this are the chutney singers, especially the Trinidadians, whose popularity continue to rise in Guyana and in other Caribbean countries. Some of them have gotten fame from promoting and encouraging rum drinking in their music, often making references to various characters resorting to rum drinking as a way to deal with social and other problems encountered.

We are well aware, alcohol is considered to be a "downer" type of drug, so it should not be consumed if one is in a depressed state of mind. Drinking while in a depressed state will certainly contribute to feelings of more depression; hence persons should be sensible and not allow the messages that are being peddled in the “rum songs” to convince them otherwise.

Of note too is that there are very few young people learning formal music. Until a generation ago, there were many firstclass music teachers, and the better secondary schools always taught music. Each year, hundreds of children in both city and country schools did the Royal School of Music examinations with a high number going as far as Grade 6 and being able to play classical music.

Additionally, the radio stations carried many hours of classical songs each week and these were regular performances by local artistes. For example, the Georgetown Town Hall had concerts every Sunday. Their musicians like Lynette Dolphin and Rosemary Ramdeholl performed. The Militia and Police bands also had regular weekend performances at various venues like the Botanical and Promenade Gardens and the bandstands in Georgetown and New Amsterdam.

Religious music of a very high quality was heard everywhere and Gregorian Chants and Bach were usual in the churches.

Indian classical and semi-classical music such as bhajans, were sung as well as appropriate traditional songs at various rites of passage such as marriages and deaths. And many people played the sitar, tabla, sarangi, harmonium and other musical instruments.

Helping to strengthen the musical culture of these pastimes was the importation of musical instruments. One could easily buy a violin, piano, sitar, tabla or harmonium and many types of drums in certain stores in Georgetown and New Amsterdam.

For decades now such musical instruments have never been sold in the shops. The absence of the availability of musical instruments has greatly affected the cultivation of a musical culture.

There are several steps which could be taken to revive our musical culture. The Ministry of Education through its Department of Culture, the churches, mandirs and the schools need to design and implement programmes aimed at reviving our musical culture.

The radio and television stations must be encouraged to have classical music, there is need for more Music Festivals, the Militia and Police bands must begin to give regular public performances and children and others must be introduced to the classical music offerings of the internet.

Certainly, with the strengthening and expansion of musical culture in Guyana, newer avenues of enjoyment would be opened.

Incompetence affecting dissemination of birth, marriage and death certificates Dear Editor, I have applied several times on behalf of poor residents in my community and also for members of my church for birth, death and marriage certificates, but the wait is very long.

I haven't seen any changes in this area of frustration and incompetence from the previous administration to this current administration. Several visits to the General Registrar Office (GRO) tells me of this long frustrating procedure; our citizens waiting months for birth, marriage and death certificates in the mail but never get it.

Their visits to GRO is a next long tedious experience. In this day and age of modern technology a Birth Certificate should not take more than three days to process.

From my observation, I don't think the GRO has a current Register General that makes it more difficult to administrate this office.

As a result of the slow processing of birth certificates, perhaps thousands of our Guyanese citizens have been unable to register for their new identification cards and were unable to vote at last year's elections.

I observed a new updated birth certificate

that has a silver Guyana Coat of Arms, also the same logo stamped all over the back of the certificate in a light pink colour.

It's unfortunate I haven't seen this same design for the marriage and death certificates. If they were updating these certificates and specimens then all three birth, marriage and death certificates should bear the same Logo of the Coat of Arms to avoid frauds.

These updated templates should be sent to immigration and embassies in Guyana. By just updating the birth certificate creates more suspicion of frauds.

Some institutions rejected these new birth certificates. Also these specimens should be published in the press and posted to all Government institutions. The certificate size should be bigger because people with 4 or 5 names cannot fit these into the small lines.

In addition to the people who have been waiting for their birth certificates for over a year, I know of many who had old birth certificates and who are now told that they were never registered.

A late birth registration now takes six months and tons of paper work and documenta-

tion that costs a lot. The cost for one birth certificate just over a year ago was just $30 and now its $300, an increase of 1000%, yet the process takes longer.

We can no longer trust the mail since mails can be lost, damaged, or go to a wrong lot number.

Worse yet, not many homes have a mail box and many residents work and are not at home. So why are the staff at GRO telling our citizens who have waited hours for their birth, marriage, and death certificates that “you will get it in the mail’’?

What makes it so hard to give it to them right there? It’s very sad that many people who have to sign these documents are never in the office or come to work extremely late or hardly ever work.

I have been to several other offices in Guyana for documents, and have been told that the person who has to sign the document is not in the office, although that same person can be seen ‘gaffing’ around the compound but is still getting paid for a job they are incapable of doing.

I am not the only person who is faced with this problem; there are thousands of Guyanese experiencing the same thing because the lines

for these documents are getting longer and longer every day, and some have to resort to bribery to obtain these certificates.

These incompetence may never change because many get rich on these jobs by bribery.

In particular, as a marriage officer I am faced with the long wait for marriage certificates.

Just about two years ago when I married a couple I would register the marriage and apply for the marriage certificate at the same time. I would be given a slip to obtain the marriage certificate in a week, which I would get.

Now they have a new requirement that when I register a marriage I have to go downstairs and apply for the person’s marriage certificate or the person will have to make the application.

It’s about time our new Minister of Citizenship look into these issues.

For Guyana to progress we must stop living in denial and correct our incompetence from day to day. I really don't think our recent Jubilee Celebrations puts us on the contemporary road map of modern civilization.

Hinds must be specific on Justice is indeed blind in Guyana discrimination charge

Dear editor, David Hinds, in his column in the Guyana Chronicle of Sunday, June 19, 2016, commented on my articles exposing the terrible racial and political discrimination in Guyana, stating that I was contradictory because I spoke about the Government’s discrimination against Afro-People’s Progressive Party (PPP) supporters and the IndoGuyanese population.

I know Dr Hinds has a Phd and it is unlikely that he has misunderstood what I said.

I, therefore, can only conclude that he is deliberately trying to use his skills to mislead his readers.

For clarity, let me repeat what I have always been saying, that is, the regime is purging the public service of Indo-Guyanese. More than 95 per cent of those persons dismissed by the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) regime are Indo-Guyanese.

They are also dismissing and harassing African Guyanese, who are members and supporters of the PPP and PPP/Civic and/or suspected supporters of the PPP/C. That is why I speak of racial and political discrimination.

Let me give you a concrete example.

Nine persons have been dismissed from the Legal Affairs Ministry by the AFC/ APNU regime. All are IndoGuyanese. This is the pattern in all or most of the Ministries. Almost all the Indo-Guyanese Permanent Secretaries have been fired, one Afro-Guyanese, known as a PPP supporter, was also fired.

The Afro-Guyanese public servants dismissed are suspected PPP supporters. Those not in the public service and are being harassed are Bishop Edghill, an Member of Parliament dragged before the Privileges Committee on frivolous charges. They intend to make life difficult for him.

Carville Duncan is also being hounded because of his suspected PPP/C sympathies.

Kwame McCoy has been harassed, injured and castigated. He was arrested on trumped-up charges and spent a weekend in prison and taken to court in chains.

The idea was to humiliate him. Why? Because he is a black PPP member.

We have many other cases like this.

It is disgusting to hear Hinds talking about PPP/C Afro-enforcers. He should be specific. This is insulting to black PPP members to be described like that by Hinds.

Are Luncheon, Edghill and Mc Coy, Robeson Benn to name a few, enforcers? Is Belgrave an enforcer?

This is racism too to paint black people as “enforcers”.

All Hinds is trying to do is to create hostility to those persons who oppose the regime.

Hinds sought to give the impression that the PPP/C controls the public service, suggesting that the PPP/C employed PPP supporters only in the service. The intention here is to justify the dismissal because the PPP/C Administration had packed the public service.

This attempt at misleading the public is so transparent.

The PPP/C, when it came to office, did not go on a dismissal spree. The then Government worked to professionalise the public service.

Dismissals were very minimal. The PPP/C believes in a professional service that is why no main dismissals took place.

Indo-Guyanese were never in the majority in the public service. It is true that during the period of the PPP/C Government, the proportion of Indo-Guyanese improved from less than 10 per cent to about 25 per cent over the 23 years. Let me say upfront these are approximate figures.

With the dismissals of Indo Guyanese taking place today, the proportion must be back to the pre-1992 days to about 10 per cent.

Hinds’ point of the PPP/C controlling the public service is a feeble attempt to defend the practice of racial and political discrimination by this People’s National Congress-

led APNU/AFC regime. It is baseless.

Dr Hinds, in trying to deal with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) issue, said that Ramotar should give reason for the dismissals.

I did. I said it is racially and politically motivated.

It is public knowledge that one of the dismissed managers has taken the matter to court on the grounds of wrongful dismissal.

Let GuySuCo state why they dismissed etc those whom I mentioned.

Hinds, in his defence of the position of the regime, sought to counter charge with hearsay. Some security workers at GuySuCo Head Office complaining of discrimination. He spoke about some workers in Government complaining about discrimination by the PPP. Finally, some workers in Buxton complaining about discrimination by GuySuCo supervisors.

In these things, we cannot be general. We must be specific. Hinds must reveal concretely what he is talking about. He should not hide behind generalities this is a practice to create false perception.

These tactics are the low dodges employed by those who have given up principles. They have to resort to his half-truths and distortions to justify their changed position. After all the PNC/ APNU have still not apologised for Rodney’s murder.

They are still very hostile to Rodney.

So while Hinds continue to pay lip service to Walter Rodney, he is actually supporting the Party he and the WPA accused of assassinating Rodney. He has departed very far from Walter Rodney’s anti-racial politics and defending racial and political discrimination against Afro-PPP/C supporters and Indo-Guyanese in general.

Dear Editor, I beg to share my views on a recent incident where the mother of the raped three-year-old was charged with ‘wilful neglect’ with intent to cause the child unnecessary suffering and injury to the child’s health, while the man who allegedly committed the actual heinous act was unnamed and placed on $100,000 bail.

From what I read in the newspapers, on June 19, the mother went on a drinking spree, returned home at 20:30 hours and retired to bed with her children.

However, at around 01:30h, she awoke to find the baby girl missing from the bed.

Upon checking, she discovered the toddler in front of the one-flat home bleeding severely from her vagina.

If indeed the mother wilfully neglected this child how come the mother ac-

cording to the newspapers took the toddler to the Police Station where she was advised to take the child to the hospital, where it was confirmed that she was indeed molested.

Editor, the police reports seem reeked of half-truths to make the mother the villain and not the actual culprit. The mother was sleeping with this child and didn’t neglect nor abandon her.

A more thorough investigation is needed to bring the real culprit to justice. Where is the Ministry of Human Service? This mother needs support and representation.

A mother despite allegedly being an alcoholic was taken away from her five children and remanded to prison, while a man who allegedly molested a threeyear-old, yes a three-yearold is on bail and walking the roads in Berbice or on

his way to Suriname.

I am outraged at these seeming loopholes in our laws and the judicial system in passing judgments. Is a drunk mother sleeping with her child approval for a man to rape that child?

Additionally, why is the identity of this pervert being protected? Are we as a supposedly law-abiding country condoning such behaviour.

With this in mind, I call upon all women’s right organisations, the Office of the Commissioner of Police, the Ministry of Legal Affairs and other relevant authorities to look into this matter to prevent a rapist slipping through the crevice and victimising a mother in the process. She was made a victim twice.

$250M could have been better spent Dear Editor, How could the administration at the Georgetown Municipality on one hand perpetually cry out that their revenue base is too narrow to allow them to provide municipal basic services; that they are too broke to undertake essential capital works needed; and there is need to tax the citizens more if the City is to advance; whilst at the same time just glibly squandering a quarter of a billion dollars on the extravagant, unnecessary and quite frankly ridiculous Merriman Mall project.

Wouldn’t that $250 million have been better spent rehabilitating the ruinous structure located at Avenue of the Republic & Regent Street we still call City Hall, in which the Town Clerk sits and presides in like an Emperor of the past?

Wouldn’t that $250 million have been better spent creating a modern Abattoir and meat processing facility in our capital to contribute to the nation’s economic development. And to replace the old dirty, decrep-

it slaughter house in Water Street where animals are bludgeoned to death rather than humanely killed.

Wouldn’t that $250 million have been better spent patching the pot-holed roads and putting in street lights in our darkened and unsafe roads?

Wouldn’t that $250 million have been better spent eradicating the mosquito infestation to help stop the spread of the Zika Virus?

And the list can go on and on and on.

How could the Town Clerk be allowed to embark on building Presidential Parks, clearly a political gimmick, dog kennels to house the weekend wholesale vendors on the mall,

house barbers and cosmetologists a most flagrant public health transgression, install a petting zoo, amongst other nonsensical projects without the Council’s knowledge or permission?

The President needs to read the riot act to the ‘Infamous Four’ just back from the Latin American Parking Meter tour, and other wayward members of Council, whenever he visits City Hall.

Our capital is in a sad and sorry state! Kudos to the Councillorship would not accept the bullyism that is ongoing at City Hall.

he number of boys who are proficient readers is significantly lower than it is for girls. This should be a matter of grave concern to both parents and teachers since there’s a direct correlation between reading and success in school and later in life. Parents and teachers can get boys to read more by first understanding why the problem exists and then taking practical steps to resolve it.

Why boys don’t read There are a number of reasons why boys don’t read. According to Jane Katch, author of Under Deadman’s Skin, children begin reading earlier than they once did, which is a problem for boys who are less verbal and develop more slowly than girls.

In addition, boys are more physically active than girls – making it more difficult for them to sit and read for extended periods of time.

Another problem for boys is the type of material promoted in the classroom.

Many teachers are women, and although they may make an effort to balance the types of reading material available, they often revert back to what appeals to females. The kinds of books that appeal to boys are often not considered acceptable reading material and as a result, they’re not promoted at school or at home.

Peer pressure is another factor. As boys reach their

Foundation teen years they may begin to think that reading isn’t cool. In addition, boys often don’t see their fathers and other male role models reading.

What boys will read Boys will read if they are presented with reading material that engages them. Rather than books that tug at the emotions, boys prefer action-filled

stories.

They also like books t h a t are practical, such as how-to manuals. For example, if a boy is a skateboarder he might be interested in reading about skateboarding techniques.

Boys should be provided with books about their interests. Parents shouldn’t assume they know what their sons will be interested in reading. It’s important to listen to and to observe

them. What are they passionate about? In a bookstore or library, what types of books are they drawn to?

According to Jon Scieszka – former teacher, children’s author, and originator of GuysRead.com – boys enjoy reading science fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, humour, graphic novels, comic books, magazines

and online material.

On his site Scieszka suggests a number of books for boys, which are listed by genre. BoysRead.org also provides lists of boy-friendly books.

How to get boys to read 1. In addition to being presented with appropriate reading material, boys need additional motivation to get them to read. It’s vital that they see their male role models reading. This

will set a positive example as well as dispel the notion that reading is just for girls.

Books can be read with adults and then discussed.

2. Children need structure so it’s important that time be set aside each day just for reading. During this time, everyone in the family should be reading.

3. Teachers should not only make books available that appeal to boys but also actively promote them in the classroom. Many boys might enjoy acting out a book.

4. In addition, teachers could set up a board in the classroom on which b o y s could post summaries of books they’d like to recommend to others. Many schools have experienced great success with the “Drop Everything and Read” programme, in which a period a day is devoted to students and teachers reading whatever they want.

There’s no reason to believe that boys can’t enjoy reading as much as girls do.

our toddler snatched a toy out of his baby sister’s hands – again. A good old fashion time-out is sure to cure the habit, right? Not necessarily.

“Time-outs alone won’t work unless positive behaviour is also recognised,” says Dr Alan Kazdin, author of The Kazdin Method for Parenting the Defiant Child: With No Pills, No Therapy, No Contest of Wills and Director of the Yale Parenting Centre at Yale University. That’s because effective discipline is not about getting rid of behaviour.

Instead, it’s about reinforcing the positive behaviour that you want instilled in your child like voicing to your child what you appreciate about her actions.

During time-outs, children are only taught what not to do instead of what they should be doing to behave appropriately.

Case in point: When your toddler steals his little sister’s toy and you punish him by putting him in time-out, he’ll stop taking the toy for the moment. But in the long run, Kadzin says he’ll keep going back to taking his sister’s things. What will change his behaviour? Praising your son when he plays nicely with his sister. “Do that once a day, three times week, you’ll change the fighting that goes on between them,” Kazdin says.

And when positive behaviour doesn’t work? In serious cases – like hitting, breaking things, swearing, or verbal aggression – a time-out is in order. Still, there’s a right way to do it, says Kazdin. Here’s his advice for making time-outs effective.

***Give a warning***.

You don’t need to pull the time-out card the first time your child misbehaves. But do let him know what’s coming if he acts out again.

Make it immediate

Time-outs ought to be administered directly after bad behaviour. By waiting too long – or worse, making empty threats – the punishment loses its effectiveness.

Give an explanation

Be calm when you tell your child she’s going in time out, and let her know why she’s being punished and how long the punishment will last.

Don’t use force

Pulling or arm-grabbing will just make your child resist. If she won’t go to time out, have a back-up consequence ready, like no bedtime story.

Be time-sensitive

For a three-year-old, time-outs only need to last about 30 seconds.

Set expectations

Let your child know that he has to be calm during his punishment. That way, you’re utilising time-outs to control negative behavior – but also working to replace the behavior with something better. (newparent.com)

Sisters killed by falling Cabinet to review alternative oil import sources tree in Region 7 T wo sisters were on Thursday afternoon killed after they were crushed by a falling tree at Kamarang Backdam, Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni).

Dead are Sylva Thomas, 16, and three-year-old Kerryana Williams.

Based on reports, a miner was cutting trees in the area for materials for the village council for an upcoming football tournament.

The teenager, who was carrying her sister on her back, was walking behind her parents when they reportedly heard the crashing sound. Their parents and

another sibling managed to escape but they were caught under the tree when it fell.

The two girls were pinned by the tree and died on the spot. Norma Thomas, Toshao of the village told Guyana Times that the council had contracted the miner to cut some material to make preparation for the upcoming football competition.

“They were walking on a roadway that is being used by farmers to access their farmlands… as they were walking past the area where the man was cutting the wood, the tree feel onto the roadway, crushing the two

girls,” she explained.

According to the Toshao, she leant about the sad incident after she returned home. She went on to say that both of the girls would have sustained severe injuries ranging from a broken jaw to limbs. She added that the three-year-old had a hole to her head.

The family and the village are mourning the death of the two children.

Attempts to make contact with the parents of the deceased children proved futile. The miner is in Police custody assisting with investigations.

Body found in West G Demerara trench T

he body of a Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD) man was on Friday discovered in a drain just a short distance from his home.

The man has been identified as Robin Gordon, 40, of 2273 Parfaite Harmonie.

According to reports, the body was discovered by two young girls who saw the man in the trench on their way home at about 12:20h on Friday. They raised an alarm and residents rushed to the scene and discovered that the body was that of Gordon whose house is just over 10 meters from where he was found.

When Guyana Times arrived at the scene, Police had cordoned off the area where the swollen body was still lying in the drain. The man lived with his 75-yearold father who was reluctant to speak due to the enormity of the situation.

Gordon’s brother who also lives with him told this publication that he usually leaves for work early in the morning and returns late in the evenings. He only learned of his brother’s demise when he received a call from relatives.

The Trinidad and Tobago Government and Petrotrin have committed to provide advance notice of product availability on a three-month basis, through an agreement with COTED as a means to guide short-term planning.

Guyana has overtime experienced fuel disruptions from Petrotrin resulting in major oil companies having had to import from alternative regional and extra-regional sources.

In efforts to mitigate local shortages, the Government sought waivers of the CET levied imports from outside of the region through COTED. The inconsistency in product availability due to unexpected shutdowns over the past three years has been the cause for considering alternative markets within and outside of the Region. COTED promotes trade and economic development of the Caricom and oversees the operations of the Single Market and Economy.

GPL employee slapped with trafficking charge

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) employee was granted $75,000 for trafficking in narcotics by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Friday.

Levi Chase, 22, of Lot 26 Norton Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, told the court he is employed as a labourer at the power company.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on June 22 at Norton Street, he had 20 grams of cannabis in his pos-

Meanwhile, another Norton Street man Otis Halley, was on Friday remanded to prison by Magistrate McLennan for having 3.832 grams of cannabis in his possession also for trafficking.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that he had the illicit drug on June 22, in the vicinity of Norton Street.

Pathologist gives evidence A

s the trial for “Picture Boy” continued in the High Court, Government Forensic Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh and Deputy Superintendent Michael Kingston took to the witness stand on Friday to give evidence.

Cyon “Picture Boy” Collier is accused of killing two brothers – Ray Walcott, also known as “Sugar”, and Carl Andrews, also known as “Alo”; both of Victoria Village, East Coast Demerara (ECD) in 2006.

Dr Singh in his testimony described what he found and submitted in his medical report for Walcott and Andrews.

According to the Pathologist, Walcott would have succumbed as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

“The body had a large open wound to the forehead causing loss of brain matter,” Dr Singh told the court, pointing out all of the bones in the head were fractured.

A second hole was discovered in the abdomen where a bullet entered and exited through the left side of the chest while another wound was visible at the base of the skull and exited through the back of the neck.

Dr Singh said he was not a ballistic specialist and it was no way he could have determined the type of weapon used but from his knowledge, the injuries had to be caused by a rifle and not a shotgun.

the elbow and no bones were broken in the arm; however Dr Singh deemed it a possibility.

Upon examination of Carl Andrews, Dr Singh discovered three bullet wounds and several abrasions about the body caused by bullets.

The external examination showed a wound to the right cheek near the eye while a second showed an entrance from the lower right back and a third to the face.

The bullet entering the back, according to Dr Singh, would have travelled upwards and pierced the right lung and fracturing the first rib before lodging in the chest cavity where he discovered it during the autopsy

examination.

The fractured rib, in Dr Singh’s opinion may have been the cause of the exit hole below the neck with a fragment of bone coming through the opening.

This is the third trial Collier stands accused of murdering the two brothers in Victoria Village, ECD on September 23, 2006. Reports are a group of young men were playing dominoes at the Victoria four-corner when the two brothers were allegedly shot by the accused, who rode up on a motorcycle.

The brothers were rushed to hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. The trial continues on Monday.

With the entire Tribe of Economists - especially the elite mega-salaried ones in the developed countries caught with their pants down when their financial system catastrophically collapsed in 2008 - you'd think politicians would be a bit sceptical about their prognostications. Not with the Guyanese movers and shakers of our economy, however.

Your Eyewitness has made this point so many times before that his outstretched hands supplicating the grey-bearded fella in the sky are now fixed in that posture. Just months after the elections the business community started to make noises about the economy "slowing down". "Not to worry!!" exclaimed the Finance Minister. "Just post elections jitters - everything's gonna be all right! The IMF says our economy's growing!"

When everything DIDN'T get "all right", the businessmen again pointed out to the Government perchance they might consider injecting some budgetary "stimulus". After all public servants hadn't gotten their promised raises which they could've spent to accomplish that task. "Not to worry!" said Pressie. "The IMF economists tell us we're the only economy that's growing. Never mind the six sick sisters. Folks gonna find money to spend at Christmas - regardless."

With Christmas sales flat and the economy still crippled, the business community raised their voices in unison this time - through their Associations and produced numbers to show "things na regulah" when it came to money circulating and lubricating the economy. The Minister of Business now joined his colleague in the Finance Ministry and told the gathered businessmen, in so many words, they didn't know what they were talking about. The economists at the IMF had once again assured the Government "everything's all hunky dory!"

Well now that the year's half over and sales still slip-sliding away, the businessmen decided to do a survey - which showed that their revenues had declined by 30-40%!!! Now that's not a "decline" - but an economy in free fall! So guess what the Business Minister - who was just given another portfolio, Tourism - said?

That's right! In a fine imitation of the captain of the Titanic, he asserted, "Not to worry, The economy's not in crisis!"

As others - such as the Opposition Leader - have pointed out, this proclivity to lap up the opinions of "outsiders" as gospel, and deny the empirical evidence of locals, isn't confined to maters economic...But in the latter case, the results could literally mirror the experience of the Titanic....but this time it will be a whole country deep-sixed.

The irony is economics likes to call itself "the queen of the social sciences" because it claims it is "evidence based".

Will the powers that be please look at the evidence on the economy themselves?

...it's leaking!

One of the weirdest developments in Guyana that for some reason hasn't gotten its fair share of coverage has been unfolding in Region 5. No...not the flood - which DID escape notice for a couple of months. But more on that later. Your Eyewitness has in mind the ridiculous situation in the RDC which has been unable to conduct meetings this year because the APNU/ AFC councillors insist the Chairman must apologise to Pressie. Why? Seems he didn't show up at a function in Region 5 where Pressie was handing one of his "B's" - bus, bicycle or boat. You remember that programme.

And we return to the flooding in Region 5. So because of the alleged "diss" of Pressie by the Chair, nothing can be done by the RDC to deal frontally with the water that had inundated the houses of the poor villagers.

Who, not so incidentally, are mostly supporters of the APNU Go figure!!

...so why apologise?

Guyana/Russia in discussion to establish local mining university

T

he Minister of Foreign Affairs is currently engaged in discussions with his counterpart Minister of the Russian Federation to establish a university or institution in Guyana that would focus primarily on generating skills for the mining sector.

While the proposals are still in its preliminary stage, Guyana might very well receive Russia’s assistance in instituting the entity.

This was disclosed by Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge, who told the media Friday that there is no formal approval just yet, but discussions are underway to facilitate this project.

Greenidge was at the time speaking at a media conference where he updated the media on projects that were initiated during the 20th Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) held in Moscow, Russia between June 14 and 16.

Among the plans that were made to foster the growth of Guyana’s economy as well as other aspects of the nation’s affairs, the possibility of establishing the institution was developed. In addition to this, suggestions were made to initiate collaboration between the University of Guyana (UG) and the Saint Petersburg State University so that technical training can be offered at Guyana’s

Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge

premier tertiary institution.

According to Greenidge, he was approached by a representative from the university who presented the proposal to him. Noting that UG is currently faced with a number of challenges, he said that he was quick to grasp the opportunity.

“UG has a number of faculties but it is also challenged in a number of ways, and I believe they could benefit from collaborations in many quarters, especially in some of the technical areas, whether it is technology or engineering,” he explained.

These discussions were extended to the level of Russia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov who heard of Guyana’s desire and interest to have its assistance in setting up the institution.

The minister expounded that once the institution is

established, after requisite consultations with the governments of both countries, it will offer studies from the sub-professional level to graduate level, then professional certification level.

While technology and engineering may be integrated to UG’s standard curriculum, the mulled institution will be devoted to mining engineering.

“This would be an entity devoted almost exclusively to generating skills relevant to gold, bauxite, uranium, manganese and diamond mining. These are things that we are currently exploiting,” Greenidge remarked.

Clarifying why this particular sector was chosen, he said that mining in Guyana needs to be further advanced, using the human resources that are available to Guyana.

To this end, he spoke of the mining operation which requires persons to analyse the composition of soil makeup and other compartments relating to the process.

According to Greenidge when these particulars were related to the Russian minister, it was understood that he had indicated the country’s willingness in partnering with Guyana to achieve its vision.

Presently, the minister is fashioning proposals to this effect as the exchange of information between the two parties continues.

Eccles residents complain of burning landfill site … matter more difficult than anticipated – Bulkan

L

iving within close propinquity of the Haags Bosch Landfill in Eccles, East Bank Demerara, has proven to be disadvantageous to those who are forced to brave through the smoke because of wood repeatedly being burnt in the vicinity.

According to residents in the area, this battle with the prolonged exposure to the smoke in their homes has been occurring for approximately four weeks during the evenings and early morning hours.

One resident of the area highlighted to Guyana Times that during 19:00h and 05:00h, the smoke is at its worst and does not clear up until 06:30h, adding that during the rainy weather, the smoke would dissipate faster as compared to the dry weather.

“The hours vary depending on the weather, the night before and in the morning. But you can even smell the stench in the smoke knowing it isn’t just garbage but wood being burnt and being exposed to this in our homes is far from healthy, it is like killing us slowly because we have to breathe and inhale this,” she stated.

Another Eccles resident told this publication that the clouds of smoke cloak the village, affecting many asthmatic children, emphasising the danger-

ous effects of second hand smoke on the lungs of persons.

Guyana Times was informed that the matter has been reported on numerous occasions to the Communities Ministry and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) but in each instance; residents were told the respective authorities were “looking into the matter.”

“The intense heavy smoke has your eyes burning badly and has you coughing… but still the Ministry says they are looking into it and the EPA said they are looking at the issue but the smoke still is there. It has been weeks since this is happening and we can’t get a solid answer as to when it will end. Persons with little children and babies are now under pressure in their own homes having to deal with health hazards and their kids,” one young lady asserted.

In response to the many questions posed to an employee attached to the Haags Bosch Landfill site, it was explained that the burning wood was disposed of separately, having been collected and dumped by garbage trucks a few weeks ago.

He highlighted that though he was aware of the problem the smoke posed to the residents in the area, he was unable to control the situation since it was out of his line of

work.

“What we need to do is go back to the original cell area being used to dump and dispose of garbage which is further away from the living proximity of persons.

Ever since that big fire late last year, we have been using this temporary new site and it is time we go back to using the old one since this was only supposed to be for a time.

They supposed to award a new contract but I don’t know what taking them so long, they need to do this so we can relocate the garbage because it will continue to affect people living around here and their children,” he added.

M e a n w h i l e , Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan told this publication that the matter is being addressed and there is hope for it to be resolved soon, highlighting that the situation has proven to be more difficult than was expected.

“We are looking into the issue currently and I hope to free the residents living in the area of this problem soon but the matter is more difficult than anticipated.”

This is not the first time that fire has raged at the Haags Bosch Landfill.

Last December, residents complained bitterly after the area was condensed in thick smoke as a result of days of fires at the facility.

Vreed-en-Hoop vendors abandon new location

ome 65 vendors who had agreed to relocate to facilitate the West Coast Demerara Road Improvement Project (RPI) have all abandoned the new site that was agreed upon.

Earlier this month, Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson along with others from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, met with the vendors at the Vreed-enHoop Primary School where they explained that the RPI project is for the betterment

of the West Coast and West Bank Demerara.

After hearing these remarks, the hucksters all agreed to the temporary move. A new location was set identified in the vicinity of the Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School and stalls were built by the vendors themselves to accommodate them for the time.

But visiting the area on Friday Guyana Times noticed that all the stalls in the new location were empty and the vendors were back on the roadside.

This newspaper spoke to vendors who explained that

the new location is a “dead zone” where customers refused to visit.

They explained that even though they had agreed to move, they only did so after they were assured that business would not change.

This publication spoke to a number of vendors who explained the plight they are currently faced with.

One vendor (name withheld) told this publication that sales are slow, adding that some days she only sells $60 worth of goods.

“On Monday, I brought two hundred oranges and one hundred tangerine, plus

pineapples and nothing is being sold, how I brought it it’s the same way I am taking it home back” she woman explained.

According to the woman, some vendors even though they agreed to the move, did not go into the facility but continued to ply their trade on the roadside thus hindering the business for those that adhered to the move order.

“Some of us are going in and some of them are not. So after that, everybody just pack up their goods and came out back onto the road”. Another vendor explained that she also has been selling about $100 a day in the new facility.

“So we could not just sit down in there and depend on that because we have children to mind. So we come out here to hustle for the time until they come back to move us”.

She added that according to information that she received, someone will be in the area to inspect and further move the vendors back to the facility – even those who did not move in the first wave. “When they do that, we will see how business goes again and then if things cannot work out, we’ll probably have to find other jobs”.

The vendors also explained that the customers relayed to them that they will not be coming into the new area as there are still vendors that were given the go ahead to remain at certain areas on the roadside. The vendors are hoping to voice their concerns when those in charge next visit the area.

Kuru Kururu man jailed, fined $2.7M for narco trafficking

wenty-eight-yearold Andell Solomon of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, East Bank Demerara, was sentenced to three years in jail and was ordered to pay a $2.7 million fine by the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Solomon was charged in April after he was caught by Police with 1000 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

On the day in question, Solomon was allegedly travelling in a public minibus, when Police stopped the bus and carried out a routine

search. During the search, Solomon was found with a blue haversack which contained the illicit drug.

East Bank Demerara man charged for unlawfully discharging firearm

wenty-four-year-old Andrew Fields was on Friday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for unlawfully discharging a loaded firearm.

The accused, of Lot 12 North East Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was not required to plea to the indict-

able charge which stated that on June 20, at KuruKururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, EBD, he discharged a loaded firearm at Kevin Batson.

The man who was unrepresented told the court that he does maintenance work on a farm.

Businessman using residents walkway as personal storage

esidents of the new housing scheme at Herstelling, on the East Bank of Demerara, are calling on the Herstelling/Little Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to “wake up” from their offices and take action against a known businessman who is reportedly using the residents’ walkway as a commercial storage space.

More conflict surrounds Region 10 television station – Board of Trustees extended, Councillors express dissatisfaction

ifteen names have reportedly been submitted for the expansion of the Board of Trustees of the Region 10 Television Station, following a meeting at Office of the President (OP) on Wednesday.

During a press conference on Thursday, Linden Mayor Carwyn Holland hailed it a fruitful engagement, noting that it is a step towards the positive development of Linden, while commending former Chairman Sharma Solomon, now secretary of the Trust and other members for leading the efforts.

Holland, who was at the meeting, indicated that those present included Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, Minister of State Joseph Harmon and Minister within the Communities Ministry Valerie Adams-Patterson, among others.

Coming out of the discussion, he noted that the Trust now includes two members of Parliament based in Linden, two from the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) which includes himself and Deputy Mayor Waneka Arindell, three members from the Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) Democratic Council (RDC), another from the Linden Chamber of Commerce and Development, anoth-

er from the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), the Union, Religious body.

Holland also stated that Regional Chairman Renis Morian was named Chairman of the Committee.

He added that the mandate now is for the four initial trustees to call a meeting within seven days to plan, discuss and arrive at a resolution, in extending the board.

Following that, he said the 15-member board is expected to meet.

“The new Chairman of the Trust will be the Regional Chairman because it was established that the authority on this television station will first stand with the Region so that the people of Linden will have a true representation…the second in representation will then be the Mayor and Town Council,” the mayor said.

representatives was not read to members of the Council by Holland. Gasper, who also acted as a member of the Information Committee under Solomon’s tenure expressed further discontent, noting that the Mayor appointed himself and the Deputy Mayor without the knowledge of the Council.

He said he views the move as a disrespectful one, more so since according to him, the matter was raised at Wednesday’s statutory meeting which was chaired by the Deputy Mayor. Gasper con-

tended that Arindell was unaware that she had been appointed at the time and promised to get back to the Council with information.

“I am sidelined…I feel that there is a deliberate move to hijack this station for personal agenda. We need to put the people’s interest forward and I dare ask and petition that we follow a democratic approach and this one was not democratic…I express my dissatisfaction that the Council is being left out under the disguise that the Mayor is the Council in the absence of the Council and give that democratic body a chance to do their work,” he said.

Gasper, who serves additionally as part of the LM&TC Communications Committee, said there are numerous instances where decisions are made by the Mayor without consultation of the Council: “This is what he has been doing all the time in this Council. As if he is ‘the boss’ and ultimately…the constitution speaks to the Council, that body of people who were elected by the community, therefore we need to respect the Council and give that democratic body a chance to do their work…he’s not going to go ahead and represent this body because he wasn’t even around for the whole issue of that television station, when it happened…it is not right.”

Gasper also objected to the “information” that Phillip Bynoe is a part of the board as a citizen of Linden, noting that Bynoe and others were not part of the initial struggle for the television station. He said the rightful people are being neglected because a selected few have a special agenda.

Additionally, RDC Councillor Gordon Callender has also expressed outrage over the process, noting that the people of Region 10 were not consulted. Additionally, he said there should have been a vote by Councillors to appoint their representatives.

“Now you’re putting people who have no moral authority…to be representative of the people of Region 10…that is wrong…I think if you want to get people on board there must be broad-based consultation with the people of this Region and that is not happening… there was no discussion at any of the statutory meetings concerning the TV station” Callender also said the OP is being fed with lies by people seeking political gain, and they need to consult with the people. He further threatened that he will “mobilise and take to the streets” over the issue.

Solomon denied that Morian had been named Chairman of the Trust. He promised to make an official pronouncement on the meeting Friday.

Region 2 RDC to investigate sale of ‘unserviceable’ items

he Region Two ( P o m e r o o n Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) will be launching an investigation into the sale of serviceable items that are being resold as unserviceable.

The matter was discussed in detail at the recent statutory meeting in which Councillors – particularly from the Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) – spoke out about the corruption and malpractices that are currently ongoing in relation to the sale of “useless” items from the regional administration.

The discussion arose after the Regional Vice Chairwoman Nandranie Coonjah told the RDC that two canter loads of material were removed from the com-

pound without her knowledge. Coonjah said upon inquiring, she was presented with a letter which showed that the materials were being sold at a minimum cost of $4500. She went on to say that she was very surprised at such a discovery, as the materials are worth over $400,000.

According to her, the letter was signed by the Regional Executive Officer (REO) Rupert Hopkinson.

Coonjah said on another instance, rollers that were in good working condition were resold as unserviceable. She then questioned what measure was being used to prove that the items are indeed unserviceable.

Coonjah also alleged that the sale of the items is only to a particular group of persons.

Central Government should intervene to mediate – Hinds

ith no clear solution seemingly on the horizon for the predicament the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has found itself in regarding the controversial parking meter project, political commentator, Dr David Hinds has suggested that it could be a wise move if Central Government steps in but only to mediate.

Since the announcement of its plans to introduce parking meters in the city, there has been widespread division within the new Council, which was elected just about three months ago.

Councillors stand divided, many branding the project as one blanketed in secrecy.

While there has been some intervention by Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan, and more recently a call for greater transparency by President David Granger, there is nothing much central government can do since the Council is led by the local government system.

Hinds, speaking to Guyana Times recently said, while he agrees that central government should not be involved in local government decision, he believes in the instance of the parking meter fiasco, central government should intervene to mediate the situation.

“Clearly there are two views on the Council; one led

by Sherod Duncan and then the Mayor and others. The parking meter issue is of national importance and central government should intervene, not to direct, but to mediate”, the political commentator told this publica-

tion.

He continued “I do believe that Government should keep out, but there are times when you have crises like this, central government should use its influence to try to mediate the situation. I think it is of national importance”.

Meanwhile, Hinds said the controversy raises two fundamental concerns. One has to do with transparency, which he said resounds as a problem in Guyana’s politics

for a very long time, while the other speaks to consultancy.

“If you have had Local Government Elections and you are talking about turning a new page, then you have to operate in a way that is different from the past and one of the problems we have had with local government on the past is the lack of transparency. So I think on the issue of transparency, the City Council, the mayor and those who support her, need to be more cognisant of that need”, he said.

According to Hinds, there is also need for consultancy. “If you are building parking meters, it’s the first time

you are going to do that in this country. It is a fundamental issue. I think the first thing you should have done was have consultation with the people. That’s the first thing. Then having had consultation, at the level of the Council, arrive at consensus”.

He said important matters like these should be left to the majority. Hinds remarked that “there must be consensus, so that you consult with the people, let them know the upsides and down sides, hear from them what they feel and then you sit down as a caucus of the Council and decide on some form of consensus.” He also noted that the lack of consultation has obviously led to the lack of transparency; an issue inimical to democracy.

Meanwhile, the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) in a statement on the issue said it notes with much concern the ongoing controversy surrounding the contract for the proposed parking meters in Georgetown. The entire issue reflects negatively on the newly elected City Council which had promised a clean break with the old ways of operation.

“There seems to have been very little if any meaningful consultation which then leads to a lack of transparency. [The] WPA is alarmed that a project of such magnitude was not first discussed with the citizens of the city who would, in the long-run, be affected by its implementation. The habit of making decisions above the heads of citizens have become so endemic that even a change of guard at City Hall has not made a difference,” the party said in a statement.

It said the questions over the suitability and integrity of the proposed contractors and the apparent secrecy in which the matter was handled raise serious questions of transparency. “Transparency is a central tenet of democratic governance and in light of the revelations of the forensic audits, [the] WPA is shocked that the Mayor and her team seem so dismissive of charges in this regard.”

The party said it feels that the initiative should be reviewed. There is no credible reason being advanced for the haste to install the parking meters. The proposed fee of $500 per hour, for example, is exorbitant. In this regard, he said the party has agreed with the intervention of Central Government.

“While we are against the intrusion of the Central Government in the affairs of Local Government, WPA feels that in light of all the question being raised along with the seeming arrogance of the supporters of the project such intervention is justified. We, however, hope that it is one of mediation and aimed at reinforcing accountability rather than seeking to override the will of the Council”.

The party said it salutes those Councillors who have stood up against the majority to bring the matter into the open – this is a refreshing sign. We however urge that, in the spirit of cooperation, the two factions seek consensus going forward.

First Lady treats male residents of The Palms to a spa day

irst Lady Sandra Granger paid a visit to the men’s dormitory of The Palms Geriatric Home on Friday to follow-up on a wellness initiative she started with the female residents last month. The exercise was held in collaboration with the Social Protection Ministry, the Women Across Differences (WAD) group and Pastor Sean Sobers of the Destiny Empowerment Worship Centre.

The men were given haircuts by a group from the church as part of its outreach programme and today they were preparing for a special spa session of manicures and pedicures from the girls attached to the WAD group when the Ministry of the Presidency visited the facility.

First Lady Granger also presented all the male residents from the four dormitories with a pair of pajamas each. She commended the young women attached to the WAD group and ex-

pressed gratitude for the church’s participation, noting that the gesture was appreciated by the men and the caregivers at the facility.

The residents and the First Lady interacted warmly with each other. Some thanked her for taking the time to visit them again.

Others thanked her for their gifts, while others expressed their admiration for her service. Robert John, a resident of Ward Four, charmed all the visitors with his singing, particularly when he serenaded the First Lady with a melodies rendition of “God be with you till we meet again.”

Meanwhile, Director of Social Services at the Social Protection Ministry, Wentworth Tanner, said that the Ministry was pleased to partner with the Office of the First Lady on this initiative as it is in keeping with its overall plan to enhance the services offered at the retirement home.

Cricket a key factor in promoting Colombia FARC: social cohesion – Dr Hinds Celebrations after ceasefire ends 5 decades of war W

ith much emphasis being place on the building of social cohesion among the multicultural and multiethnic Guyanese populace, Political Commentator, Dr David Hinds believes cricket can single-handedly unite the people of this diverse country as it once did in the past.

He was at the time speaking in a panel discussion during the taping of ‘The Factor’ programme aired on Television Guyana (TVG). The topic was based on how culture can impact social cohesion among Guyanese.

During the discussions with former Culture, Youth and Sport Minister, Dr Frank Anthony and Leader for ROAR, Ravi Dev, Dr Hinds pointed out that as a young boy growing up in an African-Guyanese community, cricketers such as Rohan Kanhai and Shivnarine Chanderpaul – both of whom are East Indian – were not seen as East Indians symbols but as a symbol of hope for Guyanese.

He reasoned that these single moments, when looked back on, are what governments should harness to truly achieve social cohesion.

“As a policymaker, I would put so much resources into developing cricket because it is one of the few areas that we can have social cohesion inside of Guyana and... across the Caribbean,” the Alliance For Change (AFC) Executive Member posited.

commenting on the fact that in all its years of independence, Guyana is yet to view outside of itself and as part of the West Indian culture. This, he said, is where Guyana most relates to and finds a uniqueness about its culture.

It was in light of this that he believes cricket is that key factor to promote social cohesion in Guyana.

He stated that when Kanhai and Chanderpaul were playing cricket, they were expressing a ‘West Indianess’ – something which has proven to bind not only Guyanese but Caribbean people.

“One of the things about our independence is that we are yet to define in a really serious way who we are as a Guyanese and as a West Indian people. I keep saying West Indian because part of it is that we exist not only as Guyana,” he remarked.

Moreover, the political commentator is of the view that investments in activities such as cricket augur

well for the Guyanese society, especially since society is plagued with crime and drifting from its young people.

“I can tell you that if we can engage (young people’s) energies – their creative energies – in a very serious way, that becomes a big deterrence to young people going adrift.

So I think, we are badly in need of a cultural policy because our economics will go nowhere, our politics will go nowhere until people’s humanity are expressed,” he stated.

According to Dr Hinds, in order to draft such a policy, there needs to be widespread consultation.

He said a cultural commission of some sort needs to be established with cultural ambassadors, and not necessarily politicians, who will go into communities and engage the people about what they would like to see in a national cultural policy and how they would like to see it constructed.

Former Antiguan Ambassador to the UN dies in weightlifting accident

medical examiner has confirmed that the death of Dr John Ashe, the former Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador to the United Nations, was an accident caused by a neck trauma he suffered while lifting a barbell in his home.

This contradicted earlier reports that he died of a heart attack. The medical examiner’s conclusion came a day after Police responded to medical emergency call at Ashe’s residence in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the international newswire Reuters, an official from Westchester County Office said Ashe, 61, died on Wednesday afternoon due to “traumatic asphyxia”.

Traumatic asphyxia, is a medical emergency caused by an intense compression of the thoracic cavity, caus-

olombians are celebrating the signing of a ceasefire by the Government and the FARC rebel movement, which ended 50 years of civil war.

In the capital, Bogota, people took to the streets, hugging each other and singing the national anthem.

Timochenko, said at the announcement.

Both sides agreed to let the courts rule whether a popular vote can be held in Colombia to endorse the deal, which was a promise made by President Santos.

The President said at the ceremony that this was a "historic day".

PM says 'historic' Brexit has implications for Jamaica

rime Minister Andrew Holness has hailed the outcome of the referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union as “historic”.

Holness, in a statement on Friday, said the people of the UK have decided to leave the EU as is their right to do in a democratic process.

“It is clearly a momentous decision as is evidenced by the reaction in the financial markets and capitals across the world. The outcome of the referendum has set in motion a process that will require the UK to withdraw from the

EU in keeping with the provisions of the EU treaties.

“We recall that under Prime Minister [David] Cameron’s leadership, initiatives were taken to re-engage the Commonwealth Caribbean, notably through the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Programme (UKCIF) and other projects within the Commonwealth.

“We also note Prime Minister Cameron’s principled decision to allow for a new Prime Minister to lead the transition process,” Holness said.

PAHO says it has strong strategy to support countries affected by Zika

he long-term outlook for the Americas resulting from the Zika virus outbreak is uncertain and the number of people affected is difficult to gauge, but the Pan American Health Organisation is responding with a strong, fourtiered strategy to support its countries, according to Dr Sylvain Aldighieri, PAHO’s Incident Manager for Zika.

In a briefing to members of PAHO’s Executive Committee, which met this week, Aldighieri said that PAHO has sent 88 experts on 53 missions to countries and territories, focusing on

priority areas of detection, prevention, response and research in Zika.

He said much work remains to be done in research to define the absolute risk for congenital malformations and to describe the clinical spectrum of Zika congenital infections.

PAHO Director, Dr Carissa F Etienne assured members of the committee that PAHO will continue to provide leadership and coordination of the Zika response. The PAHO Executive Committee, chaired by Ecuador’s Public Health Minister, also ad-

vanced on a new strategy to prevent and control arboviral diseases including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, all of which have had major impacts in the Americas.

Dr Marcos Espinal, head of Communicable Diseases and Health Analysis at PAHO, said that despite control efforts, dengue continues to increase, with 14 million cases and 7,000 deaths recorded between 2000 and 2014, and chikungunya has caused more than 1.7 million cases since it arrived in the region in December 2013. U leaders have insisted that the UK must move swiftly to negotiate leaving the organisation, saying any delay would prolong uncertainty.

European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker stressed the "Union of the remaining 27 members will continue". The UK voted by 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the EU, and David Cameron has announced he will step down as Prime Minister (PM) by October.

India central bank Governor Rajan: Not overly worried about rupee at this point

eserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said on Friday he is not "overly worried" about the rupee's INR=D2 levels, on a day when Britain's vote to leave the European Union sent the currency to its lowest since May 1.

"My sense is if we've got the fundamentals straight, our only job is to make sure we don't go too haywire ev-

eryday in the markets and let the rupee find whatever level it has to," Rajan said in an interview with ET Now TV channel, his latest media appearance of the day.

outh African President Jacob Zuma failed in his appeal against a court ruling that corruption charges against him be reinstated, another setback for the leader who has been facing calls for his resignation.

Friday's ruling puts further pressure on Zuma after a damning constitutional court judgment against him in March, and comes six weeks before local elections at which the ruling African National Congress faces a strong challenge from opponents seeking to capitalise on what they see as his missteps.

The court said Zuma and National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, who had appealed against the earlier ruling alongside the president, had no grounds to do so.

"The matter is of course important for Mr Zuma.

However if the appeal does not have reasonable prospects for success, leave to appeal should not be granted," Judge Aubrey Ledwaba said. It was not immediately clear if Zuma would appeal Friday's ruling, but legal analysts said both he and the National Prosecuting

Authority (NPA) could still lodge a petition to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Ledwaba had in April ordered a review of a 2009 decision by the NPA to drop 783 corruption charges against Zuma, which he described in his ruling as "irrational".

That decision by the NPA allowed Zuma to run for president the same month.

egion Five (MahaicaBerbice) Vice Chairman Rion Peters is calling on region’s Councillors to put aside their differences and work towards improving the region.

He made the comments as Councillors for the first time this year were able to sit and discuss issues affecting the region. The meeting was a continuation of a previous one which had to be adjourned last week after the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Councillors kept obstructing the proceedings in defiance of the Regional Chairman Vickchand Ramphal.

However, this most re-

cent meeting was a one-sided affair since all the APNU/ AFC Councillors were absent.

Peters speaking at the meeting noted that if there is to be development in the region, then there must be cooperation from both sides of the house. He said if each community has better representation at the regional level, it will be beneficial for all.

“Mr Chairman, I would also like to sound my disappointment with the absence of the honourable members that were elected to represent the people of this region under the APNU/AFC. It is time that this Council moves forward. It is time that this Council put the interest of

the people before all political and selfish desires. We were elected to meaningfully and adequately represent the people of this region and it is time that we fulfil that mandate,” Peters said.

During the meeting, several issues were discussed, chief among them being widespread flooding in the region. Several low-lying communities in Region Five are currently under water as a result of the May/June rains.

This has been compounded by clogged drains, trenches and canals. The Regional Democratic Councils (RDC’s) took a decision to have drains and canals in residential areas cleared urgently to allow the free flow of water out of

canals. There are also several outfall canals in the region which need to be desilted.

The Regional Chairman said the administration has been making representation at all levels. He added that the relevant agencies have all been informed in advance, as the Council seeks their intervention.

Meanwhile, also absent at the meeting was Regional Executive Officer (REO) Roderick Edinboro, who is also the clerk of the RDC. Ramphal said the REO by way of a letter was told that the Council took a decision to have the statuary meeting on June 23. “However, he refused to make himself available and to make the necessary arrangements along with his officers to this meeting here this morning and further I will like to make it public that he is taking advice from politicians; he is being highly political because in my presence he would have called one of the APNU/AFC Councillors seeking advice on whether he should allow the meeting this morning or not.

Joseph had accused the Regional Chairman of being disrespectful to the President and as a result, would not allow him to preside over the meeting. Despite calls by the Chairman for Joseph to stand if she had something to say, the Councillor disregarded the utterances of the Chairman and continued to speak.

At the RDC’s statutory monthly meeting in January, Joseph led Councillors to stop the meeting moments after it started, demanding that the Chairman apologise to President David Granger for not attending a function which Ramphal said he was not invited to. Joseph has ever since prevented the holding of the RDC statuary meetings.

Ramphal told reporters that he did not attend the function because he was not invited to it. He said the meeting was suspended because of the way the APNU/ AFC Councillors behaved – not allowing members from the other side of the house to speak and not acknowledging what he was saying.

Continental Agencies Limited adds new feature to Ajinomoto

ontinental Agencies Limited, in efforts to distinctly differentiate their original Ajinomoto from the counterfeit Ajinomoto, which has been surfacing on the local market, has added a distinct feature to their new stock.

The new feature printed on the back of the packet reads “Manufactured for Continental Agencies Ltd.” It was added almost two weeks ago. Some shops and supermarkets may not have the product with the new; however that does not mean that these products are not original. Visible differences can be seen in the products, with the crystals of the original being white while the counterfeit is cream in colour.

Marketing and Sales Manager Avalon Jagnandan speaking to Guyana Times disclosed that the counterfeit product surfacing on the local market, mainly the outlying areas, have cost the company tremendous losses in revenue. “We have lost significant revenue due to the fake product being in the local markets, which is unfair competition… A carton of 50 packs X 454 grams of the original Ajinomoto costs approximately $20,000, while the cost for a carton of the counterfeited product only costs $14,000.”

Jagnandan noted that the existence of counterfeit products is highly unethical, especially in business. He reiterated that Continental Agencies Limited is the sole distributor of Ajinomoto and admonished persons to desist from “selling this fake product to the shop owners that are not even aware of the products they are receiving.”

The sales manager highlighted that the recent circulation of the advisory on the counterfeit product has definitely made an impact in the local market. Consumers are now aware of the visible differences between the products, he posited.

Marlon Cole, Director of Guyana Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) speaking with Guyana Times relayed that the GAFDD is currently engaged in an investigation at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) as it pertains to the counterfeit product and its penetration of the local market.

“We are finalising our reports to handover it to the CID. We were refused entry in the suspected source of the counterfeit Ajinomoto but we will get to the bottom of this deception in the local markets.”

He noted that the perpetrator of this counterfeit product when caught will be charged: “We have to use the particular section of the law to deal with the company behind this deception.” Cole further added that they have seized numerous quantities of the fake products from the market. He remarked that it is the outlying areas that the product remains rampant.

The GA-FDD in the recent advisory cautioned consumers, wholesalers and retailers against the use of the fake product since the product can have negative long-term effects on consumers. According to the Food and Drug Department, the original product is made in Brazil and the official distributor is Continental Agencies Limited of Industrial Estate, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

According to the body: “Persons found deliberately offering for sale items of food that is not according to the prescribed standard is guilty of an offence and can be prosecuted under the Laws of Guyana Food and Drug Act Chapter 34:03 Section seven (7).”

The GA-FDD disclosed: “Using the counterfeited Ajinomoto can result in excessive salt (sodium) intake by consumers since more Ajinomoto would be added in food than normal to reach the required level of aroma and/ or taste. This is of public health significance since excessive salt intake is a contributing factor in the epidemic of Non-Communicable Infections in our society that results in obesity, hypertension and congestive heart failure.”

Tobacco Bill for Fraud, corruption concocted to remove National Assembly imminent staff – former Housing Minister – Public Health Minister

mid reports of the Board of Directors of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) taking a decision to fire the entire team of the 1000 Homes Project, former Housing Minister under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration Irfaan Ali has called the move “sinister”.

His comments were in response to an article published on Friday by another section of the media under the title: “Amidst fraud, other irregularities on 1000 Homes project…Central Housing to sack entire team.”

The article states that “According to a senior housing official yesterday [Thursday], the decision was taken to send home all the staffers of the project after it became clear that mismanagement, fraud and a number of irregularities were discovered.”

However, Ali pointed out that the Board of Directors need to identify the “many instances of fraud” that they are claiming were found within the 1000 Homes Project and produce evidence of same. In fact, he said he is of the view that these allegations were fabricated as part of a plan to dismiss the project’s team and have them replaced by new persons.

“It would appear that some sinister motive is at

hand to concoct allegations of fraud and corruption in order to get rid of all the staff at the 1000 Homes Project to make way for an entirely new batch that would be handpicked and nurtured to execute the agenda of a select few for their own benefit,” the former Housing Minister stated.

Last week, the Hamilton Green-headed CH&PA Board came under fire after it was reported that contractor Ivor Allen was singlesourced to execute ‘corrective’ works on some 11 homes under the Government’s 1000 Homes Project.

Guyana Times understands that the CH&PA Board handpicked Allen; a close associate of the coalition A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government.

Allen was once the Chairman of Region Two under the People’s National Congress (PNC), and served as a Member of Parliament of that party up to 2006.

It was also disclosed that the cost for the works is at $7,467,227, but the internal memorandum issued by the Secretary to the CH&PA Board put the cost for the same 11 homes at a whopping $16,727,623, a difference of over $9.2 million.

Moreover, the newspaper article claimed that several of the staffers, inclusive of management members, were not listed as being part

of the CH&PA, and that several staffers were related to former Finance Director of the Project Taslim Baksh.

It was noted too that during the Board meeting on Thursday, CH&PA Project Manager Fazal Wahab and former Chief Executive Officer, Myrna Pitt, distanced themselves from the 1000 Homes Project.

However, according to Ali, the project was managed by a committee headed

by Pitt. He pointed out that according to the Project’s Standard Operation Manual, the 1000 Homes team “will be headed by the CEO and will comprise a Project Manager, two Supervisory Engineers, Clerk of Works and other field staff”. He added too that the former Finance Director was only a member of the 1000 Homes Project team and was not responsible for the management of the project as the article is falsely claiming.

“The Board of Directors need to produce evidence that staff employed on the 1000 Homes Project is related to the former Director of Finance of CH&PA. No staff working on the 1000 Homes Project has any family relation to the former Director of Finance,” he posited.

The former Housing Minister, under whose watch the Project located at Perseverance (behind Providence), East Bank Demerara, began, went onto

Government Councillor Naithram, during the discussion also noted that several used tyres were resold at a cheap cost and upon inspection; the tyres could have been used for another six months.

Head of the RDC, Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt, said the practices were illegal and the RDC will take appropriate action. He said once an application is made from the public for the purchase of the items, then the stock verifier needs to examine the items properly, as well as the quantum. Ramdatt said the present RDC will

not condone any corruption or malpractices, and as such, will investigate the matter.

In response, the region’s REO Rupert Hopkinson said once the stock verifier says the items are unserviceable, he just signs off.

He also said that he does not have the time to inspect everything that leaves the RDC compound, as he is busy with his own job and there are people paid in the system to do it. Hopkinson also said if the RDC needs to investigate corruption, then the Police should be called upon to lend their expertise as it relates to crime

fighting investigations.

He further explained that the stock verifier would often recommend a price that the items should be resold at, and once that is confirmed, he just applies his signature.

At that point, Regional Chairman Ramdatt told the REO that he is the accounting officer for the region, and as such, he should be accountable.

Ramdatt also asked Hopkinson to write the stock verifier requesting an explanation in relation to the low price attached to the materials that were sold and based on the response,

“The supervision of the construction of the houses at the 1000 Homes Project was done by the Projects Department of CH&PA. The site was headed by a Superintendent of Works and several Inspectors of Works that reported directly to the Director of Projects,” the former Housing Minister highlighted.

Moreover, there were reports that the CH&PA Board had discovered that a 22-year-old Data Entry Clerk was promoted to Procurement Officer, handling the purchase of $500 million in materials for the project, without there being any records to show why he was appointed.

However, Ali explained that the young man, who holds a degree from the University of Guyana, was highly recommended for the position by his supervisor since it was felt that his skills were being under utilised as a Data Entry Clerk.

He further stated that the Procurement Officer is housed in the Projects Department and reports directly to the Director of Projects of CH&PA; hence he was not solely responsible for the procurement of over GY$500 million in materials.

Furthermore, in response to reports of inaction by the CH&PA in relation to several cases of vandalism, the former Housing Minister noted that steps were taken to have the area secured.

“There was vandalism and thefts at the 1000 Homes Site that usually occurred after dark, in spite of security arrangements that were in place. The CH&PA tried to engage the Guyana Police Force to put an outpost in the area because it was impossible for CH&PA to prevent the vandalism and thefts that were occurring on the homes because of the vastness of the project site,” he remarked.

Dr Norton in a telephone interview with Guyana Times disclosed that he is confident that had he not missed Cabinet thrice, the Bill would have been finalised and moved to Parliament.”I am certain it would have been on the order paper.”

His comments comes after Opposition Shadow Public Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony lambasted the Government on World Tobacco Day, May 31, for not putting effective measures in place to curb tobacco smoking, notably the laying of the draft Tobacco

According to Norton, “it is not the smokers who are opposing this anti tobacco bill; it is the business people that are the opposing it. It must be stated clearly that all of the limitations and changes we are making is in the interest of the general health of the population, inclusive of consulting with them before we make these decisions.”

The Demerara Tobacco Company (DEMTOCO) – a member of the British AmericanTobacco (BAT) Group – is urging Guyana’s Government to ensure bal-

sure to tobacco smoke and specifically to prevent tobacco use among youths. The legislation would also seek to ensure that the public is protected from the commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry, while preventing the illicit trade in tobacco products.

In fact, it was the Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr Karen Cummings who had outlined in April of this year that Government planned to pass legislation altering the use of tobacco in the country.

With tobacco being one of the drugs that has lasting effects on its users, Dr Cummings had said that health practitioners were the ones who were left with the responsibility of having to nurse persons back to life. As such, the passing of the legislation will prove effective in improving the lives of the country’s population as well as reducing the strain on the Government and medical personnel.

She also noted that “having the legislation passed does not mean that the drug will be banned, but rather laws associated with the usage will be altered so that the drug is not readily available for purchase in an instant.”

Windwards scored 73-9 after taking first strike, while Guyana could only manage 59 all out in reply.

he BCCI has decided to host a shortened version of the IPL overseas every September, starting this year, branding it the “mini IPL” or “IPL overseas”. BCCI president Anurag Thakur said the final dates and format will be announced in due course. It is understood that the final approval depends on various issues being sorted, including matters with the franchises and the broadcaster.

“In the month of September, the BCCI is willing to host a mini IPL or IPL overseas,” Thakur said at the end of the board’s working committee meeting in Dharamsala on Friday. “[It will be] a shorter format, not home and away matches but a lesser number of matches; in a two-week window we will be able to complete it.”

According to a senior BCCI official, the idea to explore playing the IPL overseas only came recently.

It is understood the idea emerged after a few franchises approached the BCCI seeking permission to play friendly matches in the USA. “This has all come out of letters from some franchises who wanted to play friendly

matches in USA,” the official said. “Now we have turned down. Now he [Thakur] is saying we will conduct. Now if we conduct, then franchises will ask who will pay the players. What about sponsors? What about broadcasters?”

Thakur said that with the Duleep Trophy - India’s first-class zonal competition - scheduled for the end of September, the BCCI only had a restricted window available for the mini IPL. “It is a tight schedule. It is in a less than two-week window we have to organise [the tournament]. And we have to look into various details: which country we can play in, how many teams, how many players should participate, who will be the broadcaster - all these issues need to deliberated, but we are keen to play in that window.”

Sony owns the broadcasting rights for the IPL till 2017, but it is understood that Star, which holds the rights for home series in India, is a strong contender to bag the overseas IPL deal.

“More details can be shared once we speak to the various stakeholders,” Thakur said.

“We’ll speak to the franchis-

es, to the broadcaster, and look at the revenue model before finalising the dates and the format.”

The USA and the UAE were two options that were discussed at both the IPL governing council meeting and the working committee meeting, but Thakur remained non-committal about the venue. “There are many options, many countries host the IPL. So there will be a process to look at the various time zones available, various markets available, which could be the best partner country, whether every year it should be hosted in that country or the countries can be changed.”

At the meeting, the BCCI also decided to pass the proposal to hold Ranji Trophy games at neutral venues in the coming season, and replace the state-based domestic T20 tournament - the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy - with a zonal-based competition. A release issued after the meeting also said the board will have a separate marketing budget in the coming season to “popularise” Test cricket, and restrict the participation of players in Under-19 World Cups. olice arrested Flamingo as action in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Stag Premier League continued on Thursday night at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.

The lawmen won by a large margin after whopping their opponents 6-0.

It could have been worse if it was not for some quality blocks from Flamingo’s custodian. However, of the numerous attempts on goal six of the accurate shots managed to find the back of the nets.

Lerone Charles and Athio Wallace had an excellent game scoring a brace each to give their team a huge win. Charles opened the account in the 11th minute and follow up in the 17th. Wallace registered in the 5 nd and 54th.

Meanwhile there was a goal each for Rawle Hayes 47’ and Quincy Holder 67’.

In the other game, Riddim Squad dismissed any threats by Campton with a 3-1 defeat over the Campbellville side. The winners got going in the 13th and 14th minutes, with

goals from Amos Ramsay and Sceyon Hope respectively. However, Campton fought their way back into the match with a 27th minute goal by Anthony Sancho.

Although some pressure was amounting Riddim Squad managed to maintain the lead at the end of the first half. But eight minutes after the break Teon Jones netted the decider which saw his team across the line at the end.

The final round is set for July 3 and an exciting day is expected as the final looms.

rinidad & Tobago continues its impressive unbeaten run in the Regional Under-19 Girls’ Invitational Twenty20 Tournament yesterday, defeatin Guyana in the semifinals at Gilbert Park in Couva, Trinidad.

The host T&T continued with their consistency with a nine wicket win over a very young Guyana team.

Guyana made 56-8 in 16 overs while T&T replied strongly with 57-1 in 9.4 overs.

arah Piggot and Nicolas Hing are inaugural champions of the Guyana Sport Shooting Federation/ Archery Olympic Day Indoor Archery Competition. The competition was held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue in observance of Olympic Day on the same day it is customarily observed worldwide by sporting organisations.

The competition saw eight archers in both the Men’s and Women’s categories and Recurve Division, vying for the top 3 spots.

Since there was limited time at the venue, The Competition comprised of one ‘end’ (6 arrows).

Shooting began at approximately 17:30 Hrs after the competitors were warmed up and adjusted their bow sight alignments.

Shooting was done in pairs, the first pair being Liddon Kellman and Michael Abrams, the second pair – Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon and Sean Duncan, the third pair – Sarah Piggott and Nicholas Hing, and the final pair – Narda Mohamed

and Anand Mangra. Points were tallied after all archers had shot their ends. The ladies points were: PersaudMckinnon - 6, Mohamed - 10 and Piggott - 21, while the men’s points were: Duncan - 6, Kellman - 13, Mangra 19, Abrams & Hing – 26.

The Director of Shooting then announced that there was a tie between Abrams and Hing in the male division and a tie breaker was held, after which Hing emerged the winner with 49 points total. A small presentation ceremony was held afterward to award the medals to the winners.

At the start of the event the appointed Director of Shooting for the Competition, Mr. Ryan McKinnon advised of the strict safety rules which are a standard of the World Archery and its affiliated organisations.

Presenting the medals to the Ladies was Archery Committee Chairman, Nicholas Hing. The bronze medal went to Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, Silver went to Narda Mohamed and Gold to Sarah Piggott.

Meanwhile the medals to the

men were presented by GSSF President, Vidushi PersaudMckinnon. The Bronze went to Anand Mangra, Silver to Mike Abrams and gold to Nicholas Hing.

The GSSF is an affiliate of WA and aims to uphold its standards and rules at all times. The competitors utilised the Federation’s PVC Olympic styled Target Archery bows. The Indoor Target Archery Competition was held under the strict Rules of World Archery.

Targets used were the World Archery approved 40cm targets and shot from 9m which is half the distance of the Olympic Indoor Target Archery competitions.

n epic night of tennis ended in favour of Anthony Downes and Afruica Gentle who won the men’s and women’s open title respectively as the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Independence Golden Jubilee tournament closed on Thursday night at the GBTI Recreation Centre, Bel-Air Park courts.

Number one seed and five year defending champion, Anthony Downes, defeated second seed Daniel Lopes 6-1 6-2 to win a record sixth title in the men’s open.

On the other side, Gentle became the youngest women’s champion in the history of the sport locally when she defeated three time champion Nicola Ramdyhan 6-4, 6-1.

In the men’s encounter Downes started well by taking the first point of the match. Serving at 0-1, Lopes immediately evened the score by holding serve to 1-1. However, it was Downes who dominated the set with his fast pace serves and consistent groundstroke. These drew several unforced errors from Lopes who appeared to hold his ground in the rallies but failed to sustain a momentum to close with a winning point. Daniel’s fate dimmed as the number one seed whisked away five successive games to claim the set at 6-1.

From the onset of the second set, Lopes was explicitly frustrated as he tried to grapple with the grave errors he was making on the court. Meanwhile, Downes maintained his thunderous commitment to each point and sprung to 4-0. At this point, there was a surprise shift in the course of the match as enormous encouragement from spectators showered on Lopes, clearly enabling him to secure ser-

vice to pop a game on the score board. Serving at 4-1, Downes again held serve to 5-1. Lopes managed to hold serve at 5-2 with the hope of setting the match to a third set. But the number one seed further cemented his place in Guyana’s tennis history as the undefeated GBTI Men’s Open Singles king by brushing Lopes aside at 6-2, thereby securing the match at 6-1, 6-2.

Downes is no stranger to tennis, as he has been dominating local men’s tennis throughout the years in virtually every category he enters. This year, he created a potent team with the young powerhouse Afruica Gentle to easily take the Mixed Open Doubles title from crowd favorites and defending champions Daniel Lopes/Aretta Dey allowing only two games to slip by to their opponents at 6-1, 6-1.

The history of tennis in Guyana took another twist with Afruica Gentle stamping her name as the youngest Ladies Open Singles champion in the open tournament that spanned two weeks. Her rival, former three- time winner Nicola Ramdyhan, brought vigor to the first set. Gentle won the toss and granted Ramdyhan the opportu-

nity to serve. Gentle broke Ramdyhan’s serve to lead at 1-0. Ramdyhan responded by breaking Gentle’s serve twice and holding serve to enjoy a 3-1 gallop over her opponent. Serving down 1-3, Gentle succeeded in not just leveling the score at 3-3, but surpassed Ramdyhan to dominate at 4-3. Randyhan noted that her relaxed attitude attributed to losing the lead during the set. She went on to hold serve level the set at 4-4. Unfortunately for Ramdyhan, Gentle’s passion for the set was clearly more than hers. Constantly correcting herself aloud and staying focused on the game, Gentle broke and held serve to seize the first set at a close 6-4.

Gentle predominantly commanded the second set. Known for her powerful strokes, she exemplified her trademark by playing with a high degree of consistency to dash to a 4-0 rise over Ramdyhan. The defending champion then unleashed some of her own venom to break Gentle’s serve and appear on the scoreboard at 1-4. Her efforts, though commendable, were proven futile as Gentle relentlessly persevered to 6-1 to grab the coveted title as the queen of Ladies Open Singles at 6-4, 6-1 dethroning Ramdyhan.

Biggest yet Mr Guyana set for July 10

he Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) will hold its Senior Mr Guyana, Bikini and Mr. Physique competition on Sunday July 10 from 19:00 hrs at the National Cultural Centre. The competition will be used to select representatives for the 44th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation Championships slated for September 15 in the Dominican Republic.

Three (3) years defending champion Kerwin Clarke will once again look to put a strangle hold on the competition while Junica Pluck will attempt to defend her title in the Bikini division.

Speedboat had first strike and got to 136/9 from their 15 overs with Delroy Perrera taking 3 for 22. In the run chase Regal got to 141/3 with one ball to spare with Samuel Kingston top scoring with 39 and Chien Gittens making 31.

The Female Open category also had some action with two fantastic matches.

Wellwoman defeated long-time rivals 4R Lioness by 6 wickets. 4R Lioness took first strike and made 104-3 from their 15 over with Tameka Wilson hammering 44. In reply, Wellwoman raced to 105-4 in 11.4 overs with the hard hitting Latoya Smith striking 47 with admirable support form Zola Telford 30.

Also in winners row were the Blue Divas who destroyed Enterprise Divas by a mammoth 111 runs.

got to 146/9 from 15 overs with Sangetta Sawh making 39. The run chase for the Enterprise Divas never got going and they were eventually bowled out for 33.

Sangetta Sawh came back with the ball to claim 4 wickets for 2 runs to cap a fine all round game.

There were also four matches in the Masters Category Wellman made light work of Albion Masters with a 9-wicket victory. Albion Masters batted first and posted 147 All Out in 20 overs. H. Hassin made 37 and J. Bojh chipped in with 31 as Lakeram Singh bagged 3 for 25 and L. Kallicharran 2-20. Led by Lloyd Ruplall 65 and Ramnauth 53 Wellman hurriedly got to 150/2 from 13 overs.

H.S Masters defeated Floodlights by 7 wickets. Floodlights stumbled to 143 All Out with Clive Canterbury making 34 with Ricky Deonarain 31 and Richard R. Persaud 29 chipping in. Ricky Persaud picked up 2 wickets for 12 runs bowling for H.S Masters who then made 148/4 from 16 overs to win by 7 wickets with four overs

to spare. R. Samaroo and Danny Samaroo made 38 apiece while D. Mohanram 33, C. Hoyte 24 and Heralall 23 not out were all among the runs. Richard Persaud removed the gloves to claim 2 wickets for 7 runs.

Floodlights narrowly got past Tropical Springs by 1 run. Floodlights led

by Wayne Jones with 76, Ramesh Narine 42, Imtiaz Mohamed 39 not out and Richard Persaud with 30 posted a challenging 215 for 3 from their quota of 20 overs.

In reply, Tropical Springs finished on 214/9 when their 20 overs ran out. Lalta Gainda made 45 and Vijay 35 while Clive Canterbury 3-28.

In the final game of the day, Parika Defenders beat Fisherman Masters by 42 runs. Parika posted 196 all out with Aftab Khan 46 and Belam Singh 45. In reply Fisherman were bundled out for 154 with S. Dyal making 33.

efending champions of Zone six Berbice High School (BHS) overcame an early scare to book their place in the second round of the annual Digicel knockout schools football tournament with a 4-2 win over Manchester Secondary on Thursday at the Burnham Park in New Amsterdam.

Led by a helmet trick from Derck Taylor, BHS came from behind after Shane Campbell had put Manchester ahead in the 13th minute.

The heavy conditions did little for the defending champions but afforded them a shot from the penalty spot in the 18th minute for the equalizer.

Using the advantage of the wind, Taylor netted his second goal seconds into the second half with a shot from outside of the 18-yard box which went over the goalkeeper’s head. One minute later, Taylor was inside the 6-yard box after dribbling past two defenders and made it 3-1.

The defending champions were then forced to dig deep to avoid the game having to be decided from the penalty spot. Taylor was called on again and delivered in the 70th minute he delivered with his fourth goal.

BHS will now meet Skeldon Linepath Secondary on Thursday in a secondround match.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Tagore Memorial Secondary took advantage of a week and inexperienced Winifred Gaskin Primary and inflicted a 16-0

win when the two teams met at the Skeldon Community Centre on Wednesday.

Scoring for Tagore Memorial, Sherman Stewart scored a double helmet trick with goals in the 1st, 4th, 10th, 40th, 41st, 47th 70th and 83rd minutes of play.

Neil Jacobs scored a hat trick with goals in the 18th, 56th and 76th minutes while Rondel Rawlins scored in the 33rd and 45th minutes and Richard Leitch 43rd, Mattias Lewis 69th and Cyrus Nicholson 77th minute.

Tagore will clash with Tutorial Academy at Skeldon next Friday.

Team Coco’s Raynauth Jeffrey, back in the country after stints in Colombia and the United States is confident heading into the weekend after placing in the top five (5) in the Castrol Father’s day road race over the weekend. His teammate Hamza Eastman is the defending Time Trial and Road Race champion and should be considered a favourite due to his ongoing racing and training also in Colombia and the United States.

However, both courses are very different this time round and team Evolution’s Orville Hinds must be taken into the equation since the Lindener has been dominant across the local scene this season.

Teammates Michel Anthony and Raul Leal are enjoying consistent success and may also pose a threat to the tile of national champion.

Overseas based Scott Savory is also in excellent form and could also be considered a dark horse for the races providing he adjusts quickly to local conditions.

The GCF will use these races to select teams to represent Guyana at regional and international meets, thus intense cycling is anticipated.

lympic Day was first celebrated on June 23, 1948 with the goal of celebrating the Olympic movement and the Olympic ideals.

It continues to be celebrated on June 23rd of each year and all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have been encouraged to organise Olympic Day activities. Olympic Day Runs were introduced in 1987 and are now organised by over a hundred NOCs. Over the past few years, Olympic Day has been celebrated under the three pillars – Move, Learn and Discover. Move encourages persons of all ages and abilities to be involved in some form of physical activity; Learn involves the teaching of Olympic Values and providing information on the positive effects of sport on society; Discover encourages persons to attempt sports which they have not previously tried.

he Guyana Amazon Warriors made a promising start to their 2016 campaign as they eased to a comfortable 49run victory against a Select XI on Friday night at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Batting first under lights, the Warriors racked up 1707 from their allotment of overs and were led by a compact 48 by Assad Fudadin and a workman-like 36 by Jason Mohammed.

In response the Guyana Select XI were limited to 121-9 in reply with Devendra Bishoo and Sohail Tanvir picking up three wickets each. The Pakistani left-arm seam bowler led the pack with 3-22 while legspinner Devendra Bishoo picked up 3-11.

Robin Bacchus 24 (3x4s) from 18 balls and Leon Johnson with 22, were the

top scorers against a tight bowling unit; Sherefene Rutherford (14) and Kevon Boodie (14), were the other batsmen to offer some resistance.

Earlier, the Warriors’ innings did not get off to the best of starts as Dwayne Smith (00) was bowled by the pacey Keon Joseph with the team yet to register a run.

Fudadin and the Australian Chris Lynn took the score to 39 in the sixth over before Romario Shepherd had Lynn playing down the wrong line to be bowled for 20 (3x4s).

A total rebuilding effort was then on the way between Fudadin and Trinidadian Jason Mohammed, as the duo put on 69 for the third wicket to lift the Warriors to 108-3.

Just when Mohammed was beginning to look threaten-

ing he fell after hitting two fours and two sixes.

Not long after, Fudadin followed after striking five boundaries in a knock that returned some substance to the Warriors batting effort.

C h r i s t o p h e r Barnwell (09) hit his first ball for four but did not stay long at the crease, neither did Tanvir (04).

A quick fire 24 not out (3x4s; 1x6) by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble lead the team their team to their eventual score in front of a nice Friday evening crowd.

Joseph took 3-30 while the medium pace of Rutherford accounted for 2 wickets at the cost of 25 runs.

The Warriors will be engaged in another practice match today at the same venue from 12:00 hrs.

25 elite referees to undergo fitness tests at Leonora

T

he Guyana Football Federation (GFF) will host the second FIFA referee fitness test of 2016 on Sunday, 26th June, 2016 at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora from 14:30 hrs.

This test is a mandatory element of the referee programme and will feature 25 elite referees in Guyana in four categories – Male and Female and respective Assistants. It will evaluate the fitness levels of the FIFA referees

using the new FIFA Referee Fitness Test. According to the Head of the Refereeing Department, Stanley Lancaster, this new FIFA fitness test is “an adjustment of the former and will require shorter distances to be covered in keeping with the game activity of the referees.”

The three-and-half hour test, which will be evaluated by a Member Association Fitness Instructor, Lindley Langhorne, will see referees engaging in sprints, endurance run and recovery and will include referees from five regions namely; Regions Three, Four, Five, Six and 10.

Elite referees are those who have consistently shown a high level of proficiency in the interpretation and application of the Laws of the Game and have maintained the required fitness level. Referees are assessed four times a year in keeping with the FIFA mandate.

Knight Riders on Sunday July 10 from 19:00 Hrs and will wrap up the leg of local matches on Tuesday July 12 against the St. Lucia Zouks at 19:00hrs.

The fourth edition of the Hero Caribbean Premier League opens on Wednesday June 29 with defending Champions Trinbago Knight Riders hosting the St. Lucia Zouks at the Queen’s Park Oval while the Guyana Amazon Warriors will kick start their campaign against the St. Kitt’s and Nevis Patriots on Thursday June 30 at Warner Park followed by a key meeting against the Knight Riders on Saturday July 2 at the Queen’s Park Oval before their four home matches.

The Amazon Warriors were runners-up in 2013 and 2014 and will be looking to go all out this year in claiming their maiden CPL Championship.
