he United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) recently completed a comprehensive current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP) inspection of the NEW GPC INC facility located at Farm, East Bank Demerara.

The inspection was conducted from September 1 to September 4. NEW GPC currently exports Over-the-Counter (OTC) drug products and dietary supplements to the United States market.

The inspection culminated in continued clearance for the company to export its products to the United States.

The US FDA periodically inspects foreign companies that export product to the United States to assure compliance to the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21, Parts 111, 210 and 211. Compliance to these regulations is essential in assuring that only safe and effective products are manufactured and exported to the United States.

Hypocrites on press freedom

T

his newspaper condemns the vicious attack launched on it by the Vice-Chairman of APNU Dr Rupert Roopnarine at the Opposition’s rally at the Square of the Revolution. The “rally” was billed as an occasion to mobilise their supporters against the President’s prorogation of Parliament.

But Roopnarine saw fit to call for a boycott of this private newspaper, as well as two state owned media. It stretches credulity that he could connect the “prorogation of Parliament” with the most graphic and violent threat to “burn” this newspaper.

Lest we be accused of hyperbole, we quote Roopnarine from one of the two Opposition-aligned newspaper (which labelled us “Government aligned): “within a very short time we will have to arrange a ceremony at the Square of the Revolution where we can put an enormous bonfire of the Chronicle and the Guyana Times to let them know we understand the manipulation. We understand the nastiness of their threats and we intend to act on it”.

In the context of one of the Opposition newspaper receiving fervent support from Roopnarine and his confederates against a purported threat against the lives of the owner and staff, we wonder what they will now say about Roopnarine’s warning “to act” against this newspaper.

We notice with interest, the encouragement by Roopnarine of the undiluted “nastiness” spouted by the Opposition aligned press and his Freudian transference of that label to the GTimes.

In the context of the history of Guyana, in which fire was used to teach the perceived supporters of this Government a “condign” lesson, Roopnarine’s call must be taken seriously in the realm of the real. He had once been accused of setting fire to the headquarters of the very party - the PNC - with which he has now hopped into bed and pulled the covers.

At this “nastiness”, his erstwhile comrade, the martyred Dr Walter Rodney, must be shaking his head in consternation.

One would have expected that someone, in the person of Dr Roopnaraine, who holds himself out as a paragon of liberal virtue and morals within our society would have known better than to launch such an irresponsible, distasteful, and objectionable attack on a free and privately owned media.

We view these boycott calls as an attack on press freedom and the right of every media house to report news and other information in the public’s interest without interference from politicians. Roopnarine proves the maxim: “scratch a liberal and you will find a fascist”.

This newspaper wishes to state that there is nothing democratic about the calls made by the APNU, which routinely chastises the present Administration for “undermining press freedom”, by seeking to shut down the GTimes and viciously attack it for daring to criticise them.

We wish to put Dr Roopnaraine and the Opposition on notice that his calls for a boycott make hollow his party’s rhetoric with respect to support for media rights and freedom of the press.

The Guyana Times will not be intimidated by these calls for the boycott and public burning. This newspaper and its journalists will continue to report on every issue that is of interest to the Guyanese public and will not be muzzled in its articulation.

The Guyana Times will be officially writing to the Guyana Press Association, the Independent Media Association of Guyana, the Caribbean Press Association, Reporters without Borders and other international agencies that work to safeguard the rights of the press.

Further this newspaper, over the next few days, will be regionalising and internationalising this threat made by the leadership of the APNU and will continue to struggle in the cause of freedom of the press.

We call on members of civil society, the diplomatic corps and other right-thinking Guyanese to also condemn this wanton attack on the Guyana Times which is a privately owned newspaper.

We remain the beacon of truth in a troubled land.

PPP/C committed to meaningful dialogue, but prepared for General Elections Dear Editor, The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) reiterates its full commitment to engaging in meaningful dialogue with the political Opposition, premised on moving our country forward.

History is replete with examples of our Party initiating dialogue in an effort to ensure that the interests of Guyana and Guyanese are enhanced and advanced. Having restored democracy in 1992, the PPP/C has always committed itself to and reached out for dialogue.

With regard to the current political situation, we believe that the Opposition has a responsibility to its constituents and Guyana to so engage.

Further, we believe that dialogue should not be confined to just the reconvening of the 10th Parliament, but must include other issues of national importance in an effort to derive solutions on the way forward. The people of Guyana deserve nothing less at this time of unprecedented prosperity.

The PPP/C is not unmindful of the Opposition’s seemingly inflexible position of having closed the door to dialogue.

We believe that such a position is most unfortunate and smacks of irresponsibility, especially at a time when the political situation requires political maturity and statesmanship on the part of the political parties.

Over the years, and cog-

nisant of the need for politicians to demonstrate an acute sense of responsibility, our Party and the Government have always taken reasonable positions with regard to national issues.

This position remains our primary focus during this period of the prorogation of the 10th Parliament, which was done within the confines of the Constitution.

Having continuously extended the olive branch to the Opposition, we once again urge them to be responsible in their actions and to put the nation and its people first.

Our Party has always ensured that its doors remain open to accommodate dialogue. This position has not changed.

Our Party can only hope that the Opposition will swiftly come to the realisation that dialogue is the most sensible and appropriate mechanism to achieve the reconvening of the 10th Parliament.

As we continue to advocate for meaningful dialogue, our Party wishes to remind that it is prepared for General Elections.

This position is nothing new given the frequency with which it has been articulated. We believe that by reminding about this, it puts to rest the Opposition’s claim that the prorogation of Parliament was premised on the PPP/C buying time.

Opposition sending confusing message Dear Editor, Guyanese I spoke with in the diaspora are confused about the message being sent by the opposition on recalling parliament. Most Guyanese I spoke with support the call by the opposition that the President should revoke “the proroguing of parliament” and recall the legislative body to act on the important issues – ChikV, ebola, telecom, budget, etc. They prefer that the parliament not be dissolved now and that the parties address the peoples’ business at hand. But the opposition is sending a confusing message.

The opposition is rally-

ing for the recall of parliament and at the same time it says if the parliament is recalled, it will bring down the government as the first order of business. So what is the point in recalling parliament – just to have the satisfaction of voting out the government? Which leader would recall parliament to have himself voted out of office when he could simply dissolve parliament – the effect is the same?

The opposition has the majority and can vote out the government at anytime. The President cannot stop that act if the opposition so chooses; he can only delay it as he has done by

proroguing parliament or he can dissolve parliament to avoid the no confidence motion.

President Ramotar has indicated he is willing to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections if that is indeed what the opposition wants. A no confidence motion leads to early elections.

The President has urged the opposition to reconsider their planned move and has called for dialogue on a way forward short of voting out the government. The President has made his intention clear – discuss issues at hand or have an election.

So if the opposition wants elections now, instead of calling on the President to recall parliament to vote against him, then the opposition can simply urge the President to dissolve parliament and face the electorate.

Ramotar is likely to return as President and could have a majority. In such a case, the opposition would have gambled and lost badly.

It is also conceivably possible that the PNC could win a plurality with the minority AFC joining in a coalition government.

Ombudsman’s report on NBS fraud

“Strong and compelling evidence” to recommend charges – DPP … Dr Gopaul says report reeks of politics

nce again, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar-Hack has reaffirmed that she acted within the ambit of her mandate and intra-vires of the law when she recommended charges against several New Building Society (NBS) employees in 2006.

This is in rebuttal of a claim published in the Thursday, November 13 Edition of another newspaper which suggested that, the DPP was confirmed in her position only after recommending charges against the NBS employees in the scam that rocked the nation at that time.

Former NBS Director Maurice Arjoon, Assistant Mortgage Manager Kissoon Baldeo and Operations Manager Kent Vincent, along with fellow employees Ashley Legall, Imran Khan and Amrita Prashad, and Mohanram Shahebudin were charged in connection with the $69 million fraud at the financial institution.

The money belonged to Bibi Khan but had disappeared from her account while the accused persons were employed at the financial institution.

After a tedious and long case in the High Court for several years, the case was dismissed. Arguably, this was due to the fact that the complainant was hardly ever present in court.

However, the recent report from the Ombudsman reportedly asserts that there was not enough evidence for the DPP to recommend that the Police institute charges against the former employees of the entity.

But the DPP in the release said that she “reviewed all statements in the Police file and found that there was strong and compelling evidence to institute the charges against the employees as advised”.

The release from the DPP Chambers said the DPP cannot be responsible for the fact that the victim did not attend court to testify against the persons that were accused of fraud.

“What the DPP did was to give legal advice, based on the evidence in the Police file and the Law of Guyana, which I am constitutionally

bound to do. No person can challenge this act of the DPP except a court of law and only where there is evidence that the DPP acted contrary to the Constitution or statute.”

It was noted that there had been a previous challenge to the recommendation made by the DPP, but this too was dismissed because half of the case lacked merit.

In fact, Arjoon in June 2011 had filed a $2 million lawsuit against the Government of Guyana for malicious prosecution. That case was later dismissed by Justice Dawn Gregory.

“Indeed, such a challenge was done and the High Court of Guyana via Justice Dawn Gregory did not find that the DPP acted contrary to the

Constitution or statute by advising the Police to institute the charges, but rather acted in accordance with the law,” said the release.

The release also refuted allegations that the recommendation was motivated by standing political powers, that is, to say then President Bharat Jagdeo, who later confirmed her in the current position, DID SO as payment for the recommendation.

“I wish to expressly and emphatically state that I was both appointed to act and subsequently confirmed as DPP by the Judicial Service Commission, not the President. In fact, I am the first DPP in Guyana to have been appointed as DPP by the Judicial Service Commission pursuant to the 2001 amendment to the Constitution. Note that under this amendment, the presidential appointment of the DPP, which used to be the position, was completely deleted from Article 203 of the Constitution and not even replaced,” said the release.

Questions raised

The DPP said “While the Ombudsman’s functions are expressly stated in Article 192 and 193 of the Constitution, Article 193 specifically states the excluded matters of the Ombudsman.

A reading of these articles does give rise to question how this criminal matter came to be ‘entertained’ by the Ombudsman”.

as to how the Ombudsman used an incomplete file to arrive at the findings published in the report.

“Further, based on the newspapers’ writings, the Ombudsman used an incomplete file to make his report, yet, uncannily, he was able to pronounce that the persons have suffered grave injustice when they were charged.

Surely, it must be a small wonder in these twilight days.”

Similarly, Labour Minister, Dr Nanda Kishore Gopaul, who was also implicated in the scam, has noted that by law, the Ombudsman does not have “the mandate and jurisdiction to review the decision of a private company to dismiss its employees.

The fact that the company was not even consulted simply compounds the wrong”.

“Even worse, the Ombudsman embarks upon an inquiry to review a dismissal and to make findings thereon when that very issue is the subject of active litigation filed by Mr Arjoon in the High Court. The report therefore, has been done in complete disregard of the sub-judice principle,” said the Minister.

Dr Gopaul asserted that “There seems to be a lot of spin, political and otherwise, on the Ombudsman’s report on a complaint by Mr Maurice Arjoon against his prosecution as a result of a fraud committed at the New Building Society in 2006.”

According to Dr Gopaul, reports thus far have given the impression that senior Government officials, including President Jagdeo “had a hand in some form of victimisation against Mr Arjoon”.

“I wish to categorically state that had there been a proper investigation done and persons who have been accused of certain wrong doings given an opportunity to be heard, it would have been revealed that all the accusations made by Mr Arjoon are baseless.

"This report implicates a number of persons whom were never afforded an opportunity to respond to the allegations made against them and therefore, it violates the principles of natural justice and most basic requirements of fairness and due process.”

eon Grant and Ronlee Rampersaud who were apprehended on Friday during a shootout with Police at Alexander and Thomas Streets, Kitty which left one dead, have reportedly confessed to several armed robberies in and out of the city.

The dead man, Royston Waldron, 42, of Public Road Kitty was shot at least three times in the vicinity of the chest after he reportedly opened fire on the Police.

He died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital just after 12:30h on Friday.

However, the two accomplices reportedly told investigators that Waldron was the mastermind who organised the robberies.

Once they were finalised, he would normally drop them off and collect them after they would have successfully executed their plans.

He rented guns to commit the robberies from popular city cartels.

Grant and Rampersaud reportedly told Police that on the day of the shootout, they were going to rob a store in Sherriff Street, Georgetown when the Police suddenly showed up.

They also confirmed that they were not armed, claiming that it was Waldron who had opened fire on the Police.

The two men are also known characters to the Police. They were previously charged and convicted for a number of armed robberies.

was reliably informed that Waldron was one of the men who harboured Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins and his gang during the Buxton unrest.

They were at the time hiding at an interior location which would see the now dead man taking food stuff for them.

Waldron was also fingers in the armed robbery committed on a Route 72 minibus while it was on its way to Mahdia a few years ago.

He was subsequently charged for that offence.

A Police source confirmed that Waldron is “no ordinary criminal”.

He explained that Waldron is also known for dating women who later disappeared without a trace, making reference to the St Stanislaus teacher and a Police Constable.

He explained that Waldron has been dating the

Police rank for a while, but she disappeared after leaving Eve Leary, claiming that she was going to the ATM machine in Kitty.

Constable Patriena Nicholson, 38, of 44 Austin Street, Campbellville was not seen since. Waldron then started to date Nyozi Goodman, who also suffered the same fate.

Goodman was at the InterSecondary School National Basketball Championships with a group of students, but after the game, she reportedly sent off members of the team with another teacher.

She was subsequently collected by a male companion and was not seen since.

Meanwhile, on the day Waldron was shot and killed, Police claimed that they had intercepted a motor car at Alexander and Thomas Streets, Kitty with three men who were wanted for questioning in connection with a number of armed robberies and came under gunfire.

The Police retaliated by discharging a few rounds hitting Waldron in the process.

The two other men have been arrested and are in Police custody assisting with the investigations. A .32 Taurus pistol, four spent shells and one live round were retrieved at the scene.

Grant and Rampersaud are expected to make their court appearance on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

n the judo-Christian notion of “heaven”, apart from the harp-strumming angels, the landscape is all lush and green with flowing rivers and luxuriant vegetation- at least that what I derived from growing in in a Christian-dominated country. I quickly concluded that Heaven was what you didn’t have and absolutely wanted. For me as a Hindu who doesn’t have to believe in “heaven” or “hell” and all that, I’m free to put my own spin on the concept.

For me heaven is a very rainy place. I just love the rain. To be more specific, I love the rain when I’m in bed.

Really! So I guess heaven is a rainy spot with a comfy bed in a snug home and a roof that doesn’t leak.Some of the most pleasurable moments of my life have been waking up when the rain’s just started to fall and then burrowing down into the sheets for a little

more of that sweet slumber.

So as you can imagine, I really hate having to get out of bed to go to class when it’s raining. It’s cruel and inhuman punishment, I think.

I mean, lying in bed, sometimes in that in-between reality connecting the dreamworld with this harsh one here: isn’t this when you have your most creative ideas? The only problem is that we don’t remember anything when we’re roused. But we do retain that feeling of thinking “deep thoughts”. Not too coincidentally I’m studying the brain in school right now.

The rains have arrived over here in Trinidad. This means that every morning, when I look outside I’m greeted by the complete opposite of a sunny Caribbean paradise. It takes me probably at least 3 tries to get out of bed on those mornings. I’d try to get out of bed, only to be hit by a blast of icy coldness and I’d have to retreat back under the covers, to think about whether going to class was worth possibly catching hypothermia.

Invariably, the rational part of my mind wins over and I reluctantly stumble out of bed, get ready and bundle

myself up in my coat, boots and about 15 layers of clothing. And then I get to class and still end up freezing, and I start to wonder whether that “rational” part of my mind is actually more masochistic than rational. What happened to all the “facts” I learnt in Geography about “tropical weather”??

As I wade my way back home through flooded pathways and torrential downpours, I start to re-evaluate my life and think about the things that really matter- like a nice hot cup of coffee, a hot water bottle and a blanket. Those thoughts help to get my through the storm.

When I get home, it’s a struggle to extricate myself from the gazillion layers of clothing I’ve swathed myself with.

As I flop down onto my bed wearily, after grabbing a hurried bite...and burrow between the sheets. Thoughts of equating hell to going through all of that for a onehour lecture recede.

I guess it’s kind of worth going through all of that for the aftermath, when you put some coffee to brew, curl up under a blanket and just sit listening to the rain falling… and falling… and falling.

man opened the ambulance door for me and moved away from me rather swiftly. Strange behaviour, I thought. They were friendly with me the day before, but that day, not so. No pleasantries, no smiles. I looked up and saw my mother watching through her bedroom window.

We soon got to Yaba. I really had no clue where I was.

I knew it was a hospital. I was left alone in the back of the ambulance for over four hours. My mind was in a whirl. I didn’t know what to think. I was offered food to eat, but I could barely eat the rice.

I have to inform you that your blood tested positive for Ebola. I am sorry The ambulance door opened and a Caucasian gentleman approached me but kept a little distance. He said to me, “I have to inform you that your blood tested positive for Ebola. I am sorry.”

I had no reaction. I think I must have been in shock.

He then told me to open my mouth and he looked at my tongue. He said it was typical Ebola tongue. I took out my mirror from my bag and took a look and was shocked at what I saw. My whole tongue had a white coating, looked furry, and had a long, deep ridge right in the middle. I then started to look at my whole body, searching for Ebola rashes and other signs, as we had been recently instructed. I called my mother immediately and said, “Mummy, they said I have Ebola, but don’t worry, I will survive it. Please go and lock my room now; don’t let anyone inside and don’t touch anything.” She was silent. I cut the line.

I was taken to the female ward. I was shocked at the environment. It looked like an abandoned building.

I suspected it had not been in use for quite a while. As I walked in, I immediately recognized one of the ward maids from our hospital. She always had a smile for me but not this time. She was ill and looked it.

She had been stooling a lot, too. I soon settled into the corner and looked around the room. It smelled of faeces and vomit. It also had a characteristic Ebola smell to which I became accustomed. Dinner was served – rice and stew. The pepper stung my mouth and tongue. I dropped the spoon.

No dinner that night.

Dr David, the Caucasian man who had met me at the ambulance on my arrival, came in wearing his full protective hazmat suit and goggles. It was fascinating seeing the suit live. I had only seen them online. He

brought bottles of water and ORS, the oral fluid therapy, which he dropped by my bedside.

He told me that 90 per cent of the treatment depended on me. He said I had to drink at least 4.5 litres of ORS daily to replace fluids lost in stooling and vomiting. I told him I had stooled three times earlier and taken Imodium tablets. He said this was not advisable, as the virus would replicate the more inside of me. It was better, he said, to let it out.

He said good night and left.

My parents called. My uncle called. My husband called crying. He could not believe the news. My parents had informed him, as I didn’t even know how to break the news to him.

As I lay on my bed in that isolation ward, strangely, I did not fear for my life. I was confident that I would leave that ward some day. There was an inner sense of calm.

I did not for a second think that I would be consumed by the disease.

That evening, the symptoms fully kicked in. I was stooling almost every two hours. The toilets did not flush, so I had to fetch water in a bucket from the bathroom each time I used the toilet. This was a battle for my life but I was determined I would not die The next day, Monday, 4 August, I began to notice red rashes on my skin, particularly on my arms. I had developed sores all over my mouth. My head was pounding so badly. The sore throat was so severe I could not eat. I could only drink ORS. I took paracetamol for the pain. The ward maid across from me wasn’t doing so well. She had stopped speaking. I couldn’t even brush my teeth; the sores in my mouth were so bad. This was a battle for my life but I was determined I would not die.

or the third time, the Police file on investigations in an allegation of threatening language against Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall is with the Guyana Police Force.

According to information received and confirmed by the Guyana Police Force, the file was sent back for some additional information to be cleared up by the Police.

Guyana Times understands that the file was sent to the Police on Friday after spending close to two weeks at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The file was initially sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on October 14 and returned to Crime Chief Leslie James on October 15. The DPP returned the file to the Police requesting clarifications on various aspects of the allegations.

The Police then included the information requested by the DPP and returned the file on October 22.

Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner General Khurshid Sattaur has accused Lall of issuing grave threats to him on the phone following the publication of a story in which he (Lall) was implicated in a scam to rob Government of import duty on two luxury SUVs.

“Glenn Lall, I recognised his voice, called me from an overseas number and threatened to expose me. Threatened to deal with me in a matter, as if I’m a thief and he’s going to do this thing because I am using my office to deal with the matters I normally deal with.

“He threatened to use his newspaper to expose me; I don’t know what wrong I am doing. If I am trying to do the Government’s work… I don’t know why people should be upset, if they are doing wrong things, they should be

subject to the laws as well,” the GRA Head explained.

Fear: Lall killed before

The GRA Commissioner General had expressed fear of Lall, contending that he had killed a man before, referring to the murder of Kenny France some 20 years ago. It was reportedly the most egregious example of vigilante murder in McDoom.

It would seem that this killing, which somehow led to no sanctions against Lall, set into train a pattern of excesses by Lall that continue to this day with the latest charge of tax fraud.

On January 20, 1994, in Mc Doom, according to the Stabroek News, “Glenn Mohan Lall, the vigilante”, now the publisher of

the Kaieteur News shot and killed France, 30. He was never arrested nor were any charges ever brought against him.

On that fateful Thursday, Lall and three friends were driving on the East Bank Public Road when he (Lall) “spotted” one Oclive Marshall in a yard.

Lall felt that Marshall was one of the individuals who had attempted a burglary at his home. He stopped his car and demanded that Marshall accompany him to the Police station – the nearest one was at Ruimveldt, five minutes away.

Fearing that he would be beaten by Lall and the other men, Marshall’s aunt, Pamela France, demanded that she be allowed to accompany him to the station.

By this time, a number of villagers had gathered and the aunt demanded Police identification, as Lall had claimed to be a Rural Constable, but Lall could not provide such identification.

At this point, Lall whipped out his .38 weapon and that demanded Marshall enter the vehicle. Lall also spoke roughly to the aunt who remonstrated with him and her husband, Kenny France, protested that he could not speak to his wife like that.

It was then that Lall shot France in the “chest” and the man fell down dead. Lall and his friends then drove off and he later claimed that the shooting was “an accident”.

Lall’s account was however bitterly disputed by the widow and the dozens of villagers on the scene. Stabroek News reported that the Police took a statement from Lall, but this was never released to the media.

The Police never released their findings and are yet to annnounce whether or not they will reopen any probe into the matter, given Lall's continued alleged criminal activities.

Hamid, a taxi driver in his 40s, was proud to say he was the first taxi driver in the scheme when it opened.

roads”. They were basically mud tracks, with numerous potholes.

Mohanie Keyman who has been living in the community for over 13 years said the roads have really improved since she moved in.

“When we move in here, we were the third house to put up in Avenue B and the roads really improved.”

Nevertheless, there are still several streets that need maintenance.

Taxi drivers have complained about the appalling conditions of the roads, particularly through 6th, 11th, 17th and 19th avenues.

“It not fair, we driving through them road and then if we car damage, who gonna pay for it. And we paying we tax, car parts expensive you know,” one of the taxi drivers cried.

Sharmilla, another resident who resides a corner away from the tarmac, mentioned that her street was in a terrible state due to the many trucks bringing in materials to build homes.

However, the matter was resolved after a team from the area raised the concern with the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

But while the new Diamond-Grove Housing Scheme has seen so much progress in a short time, residents in neighbouring Caneville appear to be the treated as the step child.

Caneville is the neighbouring village just off the shoulders of the DiamondGrove Housing Scheme, which has been in existence for “donkey years”.

Residents there have been calling on the local authorities to fix the poor roads, clean the drains and arrest the indiscriminate dumping of garbage in the waterways.

But NDC officials say that residents also have a role to play in keeping their community clean as they grapple to fix other problems.

And he so wanted to be proven wrong.

This Eyewitness accepts this country has a “race” problem - when it comes to politics - that is, especially voting. So for two fellas - who swear their party has “solved” the race problem - to at least show up would’ve given the anxious Eyewitness some hope.

But even though your faithful Eyewitness waited to the bitter end - and Lord knows, Granger was bitter he could see neither hide (“thick”) nor hair (“dyed”) of the men who would be “President”.

They sent their token “Brothers” to represent them - Hughes and Patterson. Owww man!! Later that night, as your Eyewitness trekked home, he saw the two miscreants hunched over a “large” in a rum-shop on the East Coast. The young and nubile waitress was serving them fried Banga Mary with pepper-sauce. It was that kinda place. The Eyewitness doesn’t like to gloat but he was proven right - once again - on these two wankers.

Their bottom line is that they’d rather stand with their pants and buktas dropped to the ground on Water Street (we know...we know...the image is gruesome!!) to avoid being caught in the same frame as Cuffy. That Granger and the other biggies of APNU would be on stage in front of “their” constituency just sealed THAT deal!! Their token Brothers had to do the dirty.

But the question must be asked: How can Nagamootoo be the Presidential Candidate of a “multiracial” party, when he refuses to speak to an audience at the Square of the Republic?? We’d echoed Burnham’s question on Portuguese scorn for his constituency, on the duo’s relationship with Granger: “Do we have Kuh ko beh??” So does Cuffy have Kuh ko beh for Ramjattan and Nagamootoo??

We’ve heard that they don’t want to be in the same picture frame as Cuffy because it won’t sell in Berbice. Let’s assume that’s true. But aren’t leaders supposed to LEAD followers?? Especially out of their prejudices??

Don’t expect that from Nagamootoo and Ramjattan, however. They’d walk over their mothers to get their hands on the National Treasury! So what’s the fuss over the feelings of the Brothers??... brotherly love But even the Brothers sent to the rally by Nagamootoo and Ramjattan didn’t show much “brotherly love”. Like the picture on the old gramophone records, they seemed to be following “their masters” voice”. I means here was Brother Granger waxing all eloquently about an APNU-led government (a man his age, is allowed some delusional lapses), while Hughes was marching resolutely to the beat of a “National Front Government”.

Now Hughes and his better half had been delegated (relegated??) to negotiating for two days on the AFC’s participation in the...ummm...rally. Echoing Trotman who preceded him as the token Brother in the AFC, Hughes had always stood for the rational choice of the AFC going into a pre-electoral alliance with APNU. Until he disgraced himself over Sithe and then had to crawl back with his tail between his legs on Ramjattan’s terms.

Said terms being - as we can see by now breaking the “race rotation” leadership that was the foundational bedrock of the party.

And treating APNU and its constituency like they have Kuh ko beh!

Consultation held Salvation Army launches annual Christmas Kettle Appeal on Shell Beach Protected Areas Management Plan

he Protect Areas Commission (PAC) on Saturday held a public meeting to engage stakeholders including from the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC), the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, and Coast Guard on the Shell Beach Protected Area management plan.

Shell Beach was designated a protected area with the passage of the Protected Areas Act of 2011. The area is located in the North West of Guyana, in Region One, stretching over 120 kilometres of beach and mudflats.

This management plan is the first of such that the Commission had drafted and stretches over a five-year period. Its aim is to sustain the rich cultural heritage of the beach that is associated with Amerindian communities and protect and conserve biodiversity, including the largest contiguous remaining area.

During brief remarks at the Commission’s office located at the National Park, Thomas Lands, National Resources and Environment Minister Robert Persaud expressed satisfaction that the Commission has been able to complete the first management plan with an aim of immediate implementation.

Minister Persaud noted that the Commission is the newest of Commissions and there are a lot of expectations by citizens, especially those who reside in the areas which have been identified and those that may be possibly considered as protected areas.

He said that the Ministry has been, and will continue to engage stakeholders, and work on developing more such plans and ensure they are practical in keeping with the objectives of PAC. Government’s commitment to the protected areas system is very firm and longterm, and reflects the desire

of the Guyanese community.

Minister Persaud further noted, even as Guyana seeks to develop and utilise its natural resources, having a viable, functioning and recognised protected area system allows for a balance in the quest to develop the natural resources and have some level of environmental equilibrium as Guyana continues to move forward.

Guyana is one of the first countries to dedicate mining revenue and invest those into a protected area trust fund. Minister Persaud highlighted in excess of US$10 million was attained.

“That again is a reaffirmation of our commitment in this regard to not only set up the Commission, it is not only moving up to the communities, but also utilising the revenue and resources that we have been able to achieve and even from the natural resources sector and invest in that directly into the environment and initiatives such as this,” Minister Persaud said.

While expressing optimism that the plan will be a successful one, Minister Persaud urged support for this initiative.

“I want to urge all citizens and all groups, Governmental and non-government organisations to see the protected areas that we have identified, the entire system as belonging to us, and in a way that we have to respond and show support so that they are successful in the end.”

The reasons for having a protected area are to conserve natural and cultural resources and to protect important habitats and species for long-term benefits for all Guyanese and the world.

The goal is to make it viable and meaningful and to create and first class and world class protected areas system.

he Salvation Army Guyana Division on Friday launched its annual Christmas Kettle Appeal at the Georgetown Club with President Donald Ramotar having the honour of being the first to contribute.

President Ramotar said the Government is very much appreciative of the work of the Salvation Army, noting that most of its objectives are similar to the Government’s.

He said giving back to the vulnerable in society and helping the poor is a primary focus of the Government, pointing out that it is proud to support the Salvation Army.

Salvation Army Advisory Board Chairman Edward Boyer noted that President Ramotar has always been supportive over the years of the work and programme of the Salvation Army.

He said just recently the Finance Ministry had injected some $16 million into the organisation in an effort to repair the Salvation Army’s Rehabilitation Centre, which is expected to be commissioned within a month’s time.

The Salvation Army is a Christian denominational church and international charitable organisation structured in a quasi-military fashion. The organisation reports worldwide membership of over 1.5 million, consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents known as Salvationists.

The Army was founded in 1865 in London by one-time Methodist Minister William Booth.

Originally known as the East London Christian Mission, in 1878 Booth re-organised the mission, becoming its first general and introducing the military structure which has been retained to the present day. The current world leader of The Salvation Army is General André Cox, who was elected by the High Council of The Salvation Army on August 3, 2013.

NCN, Guyana Times condemn Dr Roopnarine’s boycott call

he National Communications N e t w o r k Incorporated (NCN) said it views with utter disgust, the unwarranted attack on the State media by A Partnership for National Unity’s Co-leader, Dr Rupert Roopnarine.

Dr Roopnaraine launched his attack during a rally at the Square of the Revolution on Friday evening, calling for a boycott of NCN and Guyana Chronicle (the two state entities) and the privatelyowned Guyana Times.

NCN in a statement said the attack flies in the face of press freedom and exposes the hypocrisy of the Joint Opposition.

Attacks

“We view this call for a boycott of the State media as another attempt at silencing us for our fearless reportage on matters of national importance.

"This is not the first time that the Opposition has launched such attacks on the State media.

“In 2012, 2013 and 2014, the Joint Opposition cut NCN’s budgetary allo-

cations after they accused us of not providing coverage.

“Ironically, during the 2014 National Budget Debate, they attempted to forcefully remove their MPs from one of our live programmes,” the national broadcaster said It said that APNU during a series of public meetings also launched attacks on its journalists, who were there providing coverage.

Recently, Alliance For Change (AFC) Leader Khemraj Ramjattan was

reported to have recently verbally abused a Senior NCN Journalist, unleashing a string of profanities, when he was asked to comment on a matter of national importance.

In addition, NCN said that APNU’s Joseph Harmon attacked one of its young female reporters during a recent news conference, because she asked him a tough question.

“Consequently, this young Journalist was verbally abused and physically assaulted by an APNU supporter during their protest outside the Parliament Buildings on Monday, November 10, 2014, a matter that is currently engaging the attention of the Police.”

Well orchestrated

These instances, NCN said are a clear demonstration of the orchestrated attempt by the Joint Opposition to silence them so that only their views alone are heard.

“We wish to state categorically that we will not be bullied, intimidated or silenced by the kind of gutter politics on the part of

the Joint Opposition, but will continue to execute our duties in a fair, balanced and professional manner.

“Finally, we urge all like-minded Guyanese to reject outright, the calls for the boycott of the State Media and any attempts by the Joint Opposition to suppress freedom of the press.”

Guyana Times for its part, in a front page comment on Saturday, said it appears that from his comments, the one time colleague of Dr Walter Rodney, who was reportedly assassinated because he posed a threat to the PNC -- the party that Dr Roopnarine is now in bed with -- is not pleased with the coverage of the Guyana Times.

And it is clear that though the democratic tradition demands competing views be expressed through the press so that citizens can make informed decisions, Dr Roopnarine would now stifle views that differ from his.

Ironic

“This is a most ironic position to be expressed at an event organised by Dr Roopnarine’s new political comrades to complain that the President’s prorogation of Parliament stifled the Opposition’s “democratic right” to express their views through their NoConfidence Motion.

"The few hundred supporters of PNC/APNU -and possibly some from the AFC -- gathered under the shadow of our Republican National Hero Cuffy, cheered Dr Roopnarine’s call to stifle freedom of the press.”

Meanwhile,Guyana Times/TVG/RGI General Manager Daniel Singh said it should be noted that this freedom is guaranteed by the Constitution of Guyana, but such freedoms are applied selectively by fascists like Dr Roopnarine and the others in PNC/APNU. “They were staunch in defence of this freedom of the press when another newspaper, which reflexively supports the Opposition, was embroiled in a tax fraud case.

"But because the Guyana Times has another opinion on several matters, it should be starved of funds, stifled and even killed," said Singh.

“We call upon all Guyanese to see the mark of the beast in the words of Dr Rupert Roopnarine and to stand as one to condemn him, PNC/APNU/AFC and the views that they represent.

"The essential meaning of democracy is summarised in the Latin phrase “auditur alteram pars” -- the other side must be heard,” he added.

Jumbie politics

atiricus was so proud of GrainJa. Who said he was an old duffer who had no creativity? He might be old and he might be a duffer but on Friday he showed that he could move with the biggest brains of international politics. Wasn’t it Bush - an American President – who introduced the term “voodoo economics” into popular usage??

And here it was our very own septuagenarian Brigadier GrainJa had revived “jumbie politics” from the dead. Very soon, wherever political science was discussed - not to mention where high spirits were quaffed in abundance, like in rum shops - folks would be mentioning Guyana again when they discussed “jumbie politics”. Just like they talk about “voodoo economics”, But Satiricus wasn’t surprised that GrainJa came up with “jumbie politics”. He’d been an upcoming young 2nd Lieutenant who’d just returned from England to serve his sponsor Burnt-Ham, when the sly fox invented “jumbie politics”. Only that Burnt-Ham didn’t have the creativity like GrainJa had to call it that.

Some called it “politics of rigging”, “crooked like barbed wire”, “fiddled arrangements”, or plain thuggism (think Hamilton Green and Rabbi Washington). But what it had in its first deployment in 1968, were jumbies. In the first election that year after the pesky British has decamped, the Great Burnt Ham indigenised our electoral practices and allowed jumbies to vote.

The British has given women in their country the franchise in 1928, freed slaves and bondsmen of Guiana the vote in 1950, and now Burnt Ham, who always wanted to better them, extended voting rights to jumbies in 1968!! He was the first world leader to take this bold step. All others waited for jumbies to rise up at the Second Coming - but Burnt-Ham was a leader not a follower. Guyana’s voting list almost doubled that year and of course, he won the election handily.

The jumbles were not surprisingly very grateful to Burnt Ham for giving them full rights and all that. Those simpletons from the PPCEE had refused to practice jumbie politics. They were so superstitious and preached the British Colonial line that jumbies shouldn’t vote. And they called themselves “radicals”!!

So here was GrainJa following in the leaders footsteps.

He’s already introduced the practice of jumbie politics in the Pee-N-See internal elections when he defeated first Green Bridge and then North Ton. Satiricus was happy that Guyana would see the innovation come back if GrainJa got into power!! But with a name, now!! What a guy!!

Port Kaituma man killed at Snake Creek

A

miner was on Friday evening stabbed to death during a drinking spree at Snake Creek, Cuyuni River about 18:30h.

Dead is Dennis Crème, 35, of Port Kaituma, North West District, Region One (Barama-Waini). According to information received, Crème and another man were imbibing at a shop when an argument ensured between them.

After several minutes, the argument continued despite persons around pleading to the two men to end the misunderstanding. From re-

ports gathered, both of the men are “hot headed” and a scuffle ensured.

It was at this time; the suspected reportedly pulled out a knife from his pants waist and stabbed Crème once to his neck. He reportedly collapsed and died soon after. The injured man was rushed to the Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The suspect has been arrested and is assisting Police with investigations.

He is expected to be charged with the capital offence of murder.

ocal businesses have strongly condemned calls by an A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) politician for Guyanese to boycott their businesses if they do not take anti-Government stance on the President’s decision to prorogue Parliament.

The call was made by APNU Member Lurlene Nestor on social media on Saturday.

Nestor, who is a former Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) Member of Parliament (MP), said in a Facebook post that her party has begun an operation on Saturday under the slogan “Operation Sus-Out and Boycott”.

“We will ask every business in Guyana to place a banner or a placard on their business which reads ‘WE SAY NO TO PPP/C DICTATORSHIP’, the post read.

She said APNU would be asking and not coercing, begging or forcing anybody to do so.

She noted that failure to erect the slogan in a prominent place in their businesses would result in an immediate boycott which would be orchestrated by the APNU. “We give them by

resident Donald Ramotar has chastised A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) Co-chair, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine after he called on the coalition’s supporters to boycott state media houses namely, the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Guyana Chronicle.

The call was also extended to the privately-owned Guyana Times.

According to reports, Dr Roopnaraine urged the hun-

good single parent talked about these “projects” that are given to primary school children. Most of them are worthy of being pursued and we must admire the sheer ambitiousness of it all.

And yet, we need to be careful of how much and how high we ask these children to do and go. If we have the parents doing the work, then it is all absolutely useless. And almost inevitably, the work falls on mothers.

This is a traditional thing, and it forgives many of our “fathers” are either over-worked or absent, or simply there as useless and lazy pieces of flesh.

Many of them molesters and rapists, thinking it is all legal.

I have been told of this new “project” around the schools where children are asked to make yet another “scrap-book” identifying the various punctuation marks. This is wonderful, especially since I have read nothing from anyone in Guyana who has a single idea of how to use punctuation in ENGLISH! No one!

Something as simple as the comma is always misused. I have seen many written submissions and various pieces written stuff by UG lecturers that make me blush with embarrassment at the awful language: awful grammar, no coherence, no development, awful syntax, run-on sentences, horrible diction, and shameful punctuation!

This “project”, therefore, can be useful in helping our primary school children to be the next generation of people who can actually write this language with a fair degree of competence.

Here is the rub, however.

I cannot for the life of me see how making a list of the various punctuation marks would help better our use of language.

I am supposedly an “expert” (that hateful word) on English Language and Literature, and I cannot tell you how many punctuation marks there are in English alone!!!

If someone can help me out, it would be appreciated.

However, I do remember my father telling me about diphthongs, cedillas, schwas, and things like that. He never made me make a list in some “scrap-book”.

Those old-timers were clearly foolish, maybe. But they could darned well write a sentence without errors. Now my old man and Chandisingh and them always told me as well that I should never begin a sentence with a coordinating conjunction (you know, “and” and “but” and such!), but I did that in the last sentence.

One should never, they say, split one’s infinitive; and I avoid it to this day. I still cringe when I hear a good Shakespearean actor like Patrick Stewart (in Star Trek: The New Generation) introduce that good TV show with “to boldly go where no man has gone before!” To me, it ought to have been “to go boldly...”.

Oh the three dots are called an ellipsis, incidentally. So I may be somewhat old-fashioned in some ways.

Speaking (or writing!) of punctuation marks, Dr Joyce Jonas, who taught me as an under-graduate at the University of Guyana, once told me that I must DESERVE to use the dash. She was right, as she is on many things taught to us back in 1973—her first class at UG. I think the course was “Introduction to English” or something like that.

What I learned in that course was love. Love and respect for literature! UG “improved” by having something called “Uses of English”. I saw the syllabus and actually sat in on a class at the Berbice Campus when I was Director of the place. I almost fell asleep from the sheer drudgery of it.

I actually saw an essay from a UGBC student that I thought was publishable! This is not simply getting an A for an essay! This is PUBLISHABLE. I knew that the lecturer had never published a line and that he never will. This essay that I thought was publishable got a D. Help me out yawl!!

Contractor killed in East Bank accident Younge’s Take A well known contractor was on Saturday afternoon crushed to death by a laden-lumber truck belonging to A Khan and Son’s Lumber Yard at Pearl Village, East Bank Demerara. The accident occurred about 17:40h.

The dead man was identified as Ramdoolar “Eddy” Dhanraj, 60, of Lot 8 Public Road, Pearl.

According to information received, the now dead man was on his way to reach his workers when he was struck by the TN Motor Lorry, which from all indications lost control while negotiating a turn at Pearl.

He was riding a pedal cycle at the time. The cycle, based on reports received was badly damaged.

An eyewitness told Guyana Times that the truck was swaying on the road even before reaching the turn. As he went around the turn, the man stated that the driver could not control the vehicle, resulting in it veering off the main road and ended up into a trench,

It is believed that the truck also ran over the man’s head. The eyewitness stated that blood was “all over” the road. The driver of the vehicle as well as the porter might have been under the influence of alcohol. They were both taken to the Timehri Police Station where they are assisting with investigations.

man told Guyana Times that she last saw her husband alive about 17:30h when she was about to visit her daughter.

She recalled asking him if he had plans on going out, but he responded in the negative. The distraught woman said it seems as though her husband had collected his bicycle and was heading to Sarah Johanna when he met in the accident.

Bobby was at her daughter at the time of the accident. She explained that while there, she received a telephone call from one of her sons informing her of the unfortunate incident.

The woman said she was advised not to visit the scene since it was too graphic.

The wife further stated that her son and a nephew witnessed the accident. When Guyana Times spoke with the woman, the two men were at the time giving statements at the Timehri Police Station. The man leaves to mourn his wife, three children and five grandchildren.

From what was said by Dr Roopnaraine, it is clear that though the democratic tradition demands competing views be expressed through the press so that citizens can make informed decisions, Dr Roopnaraine would now stifle views that differ from his.

This is a most ironic position to be expressed at an event organised by Dr Roopnaraine’s new political comrades to complain that the President’s prorogation of Parliament stifled the Opposition’s “democratic right” to express their views through their “no-confidence” motion.

porters of PNC/APNU – and possibly some from the AFC – gathered under the shadow of National Hero Cuffy, cheered Dr Roopnaraine’s call to stifle freedom of the press.

It should be noted that this freedom is guaranteed by the Constitution of Guyana, but such freedoms are applied selectively by fascists like Dr Roopnaraine and the others in PNC/ APNU. They were staunch in defence of this freedom of the press when another newspaper, which reflexively supports the Opposition, was embroiled in a tax fraud case.

But because the Guyana Times has another opinion on several matters, it should

In the past, Guyana Times journalists have been made the subject of vicious verbal attacks by Opposition parliamentarians.

Boycott calls

n Friday, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine called for a boycott of the Guyana Times. He signalled the dissatisfaction of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) with the reporting of the newspaper because of the messages it was communicating to the populace, which did not support the Opposition’s opinion and ideology.

This is criminal. This is economic sabotage. This is an attack on press freedom and the self-regulated free media. No time should be wasted in condemning the dastard, distasteful and irresponsible comments made by the politician.

As a seasoned politician, one would have expected Dr Roopnaraine to be familiar with the articles in the Constitution, regional and international charters, as well as declarations that empower the Guyana Times and other media houses to operate in an environment that is free from political and economic intimidation.

As a former colleague of the late Dr Walter Rodney too, he must know that he is headed down an undemocratic path and is guilty of all of the atrocities that he accused the Government of occasioning.

Dr Roopnaraine, who is an academic and APNU Vice Chairman, must know that his comments fly in the face of all the positions articulated by his comrades in the Opposition, as far as press freedom and media rights are concerned.

In fact, APNU Chairman David Granger is reported in the Kaieteur Newspaper on October 16 as saying, “The media is fundamental in ensuring that the public is apprised of all the facts, so that it can be in a better position to make certain assessments as the electorate on both Government and the Opposition”.

Granger went further by saying that “the media also plays a role in ensuring that democracy is achieved”.

Apparently, Dr Roopnaraine has a difficulty with the position articulated by Granger and believes that he can threaten and intimidate privately- owned media entities into silence and virtual collapse.

But no attempt by the APNU Vice Chairman to bring economic harm to the newspaper will see a shift in its editorial policy which largely supports pursuing development in Guyana and the reportage of information that is well balanced.

Try as he may, along with the folk in the APNU, the Guyana Times will continue to thrive. He should know that since the newspaper’s establishment in 2008, it has been met with a myriad of challenges which were orchestrated to bring the entity and its publisher into disrepute.

Despite these attempts, the Guyana Times stands tall alongside many of the other private media houses, which Dr Roopnaraine evidently supports.

The salaries and other benefits enjoyed by those who are within the employ of the newspaper are not sanctioned by the National Assembly, the Government nor Dr Roopnaraine. Therefore, he is out of order when he seeks to bully the newspaper by seeking to exhort whatever influence he has over the public to hurt the media house.

Additionally, the calls made by Dr Roopnaraine for Guyanese to also boycott the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Guyana Chronicle must equally be condemned.

Dr Roopnaraine’s time would be better spent working with his newfound bed fellows in the APNU, since he deviated from the principles of the WPA, to come up with a sound plan of action to move the country forward. He should work on redeeming himself, as history is looking.

It is pleasing to know that Dr Roopnaraine recognises and understands the power and impact the Guyana Times has on the electorate, which is equal to any other Opposition aligned news entity in the country.

It is also pleasing to discover that he pays a substantial amount of attention to the content of the newspaper.

Sir Shridath presents Glimpses of a Global Life at OAS

he 58th Lecture of the Americas of the Organisation of American States (OAS) welcomed the launch of the book Glimpses of a Global Life, the memoirs of former Commonwealth Secretary General and Foreign Affairs Minister, Sir Shridath Ramphal and paid tribute to the life and work of the Guyanese politician, considered an expert on good governance, integration, economic development and social justice in the Caribbean and elsewhere.

The OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin, who delivered the welcoming remarks on behalf of Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, highlighted some of the major contributions of Sir Shridath Ramphal to the history of his country and the region, and assured that “the OAS is very pleased to be part of the launch of this long-awaited publication”.

About the book, the OAS senior official said that it is laid out “carefully and with humility. From my perspective, this is not just a memoir with personal insights; it’s also a commentary of an insider’s perspective on pivotal events that have shaped the world and the Caribbean in recent decades”.

Ambassador Ramdin recalled that the impact of the work of Sir Shridath Ramphal was “very substantive” and said that his legacy “is real, because he is not only the man of the Caribbean who prioritised regionalism, he is the man who worked shoulder to shoulder with world leaders debating methods of foreign affairs and diplomatic relations; the man who formed a modern community of nations and made concrete and meaningful contributions to topics such as world trade,

the apartheid and conflict resolution”.

“His memoirs are sorrowful and at the same time diplomatic enough to give us an idea of the reality behind some of the most important challenges in the recent history of the diplomatic world; the lessons and perspectives contained in this book are noteworthy and greatly appreciated,” he concluded.

In his presentation, Shridath Ramphal said that “there is so much I could have written about, so many others who shared my global journeys that I should have written of. Alas, it would take another book to do so; it must suffice to plead that these are ‘glimpses’ only and to hope that in their own way they conjure up, especially for those who shared them”.

Integration efforts in the Caribbean occupied much of his memoirs, explained the former Foreign Minister of Guyana and said that his book evokes the ambivalence and the steps in the formation of the West Indies Federation, its collapse, and the work of the West Indian Commission in charting the course for the region’s integral development. His presentation included quotes related to such events and to the efforts to promote the community of nations in the Caribbean as an entity with a global relevance.

inutes after midday on Saturday, a fire of unknown origin erupted in the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus compound.

The fire reportedly started at the northern end of the campus where the dormitories are located and rapidly travelled aback the Cheddi Jagan Lecture Threatre and the Information Technology buildings behind.

Firefighters arrived on the scene, but had difficulties sourcing water to put out the blaze.

Guyana Times was informed that the fire did not cause any damage or lost to property at the university.

Some observers believed that the fire was caused by the burning of garbage; while others say it was similar to a “grass blaze” that occurred last year.

The Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, George Alleyne, offered the introductory remarks on the presentation and spoke about the major contributions made by Sir Shridath Ramphal in the advancement of freedom, independence and good governance.

“His roots are in Guyana, but his trunk is Caribbean and his branches spread all over the world, there are testimonies of the values of those branches wherever he set foot or had given a voice,” he said.

Middle Street shooting, one year on …

ne year after miner Deryck Kanhai allegedly went berserk, killing two Police officers and two civilians on Middle Street, Georgetown, life has returned to normalcy but not for lone survivor, Paul Raman, 45, a taxi driver.

He is living with the discomfort of having a bullet in stomach. Raman recalled on that fateful day, he was sitting outside of the dispatchers’ room when he heard a loud sound on the inside stairs and Kanhai emerged with two guns in his hand: a handgun and a shotgun. He was shirtless and had on no footwear.

ed that the man approached him, shouting “I didn’t tell you leave this yard?” Even though Kanhai had never asked him to leave, he got up and was about to leave when the man fired about six shots, four of which hit him.

Raman’s left foot and his chest were severely grazed by two of the bullets, while the other two were lodged in his stomach walls. He was informed by the doctors that the bullets were best left alone, since if they were removed, major damage would be caused to his stomach walls and tissue.

The rejected man questioned the fairness of the situation, explaining that he was hospitalised for two weeks and spent a month home recuperating. During this time, he noted that he had to borrow money from friends and relatives in order to support his family.

Despite all of this, Raman is trying to move on with his life; however, that tragic incident on November 12, 2013 still burns in the mind of everyone who was present during the three-hour long stand-off between Kanhai and the Police.

Days after the incident, it was revealed that Kanhai had domestic problems and had evicted his reputed wife and his child from his house.

Kanhai was a well-known miner. He had a dredge in the Cuyuni area and was at the time building a hotel in Bartica. The man’s businesses also included a fuel transport service.

Around 13:30h on November 12 last year, Kanhai went on a shooting rampage before he was finally taken down after Police stormed his Lot 315 Middle Street, house.

Hours before, the Police had responded to a report that a man armed with a gun was discharging rounds indiscriminately at Middle and East streets, Georgetown.

by four weeks, which was reportedly granted to him.

However, it is understood that at least three member associations wrote to BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel asking him not to postpone the AGM. The election of the president, secretary, joint-secretary, treasurer and five vicepresidents is only one of the several issues on the agenda of the AGM, which has already been pushed back by a couple of months. It was supposed to be conducted

by September 30, but, due to the ongoing investigation into the IPL 2013 spotfixing case and Srinivasan’s role in the same, the working committee had decided on September 26 to have the AGM on November 20.

According to the BCCI’s

rulebook, notice for an emergent working committee meeting needs to be issued at least 72 hours in advance. Though the members haven’t been formally notified so far, most of the working committee members have been notified verbally about the meeting.

Some of the BCCI’s members have questioned the action of the BCCI counsel to keep pushing back the AGM, though. Also, former BCCI president Shashank Manohar, who has emerged as the flag-bearer of the anti-Srinivasan movement in the BCCI, said on Friday that the AGM dates cannot be altered. “However it appears that during today’s [court] hearing, as soon as the names of Srinivasan and [Gurunath] Meiyappan

were disclosed, the Counsel for the Board made a request for the postponement of the AGM and elections scheduled to be held on 20th November,” Manohar had said.

After taking legal advice and having multiple rounds of discussion, the BCCI hierarchy was convinced that if it postponed the AGM, or the election, without the working committee’s approval, it would lead to another legal battle, so the meeting was called.

It is also understood that the office-bearers are in favour of proceeding with the AGM but postponing the elections till the Supreme Court decides Srinivasan’s fate. Apart from the election, the AGM usually lists several matters, including

confirmation of minutes of the previous general meetings, adoption of the secretary’s review report, adoption of treasurer’s report and the audited accounts, adoption of the annual budget, appointment of auditors, election of working committee, standing committees and other sub-committees, consideration of reports and recommendations of various committees, and appointing India’s representative to the ICC. “The election can held in a SGM [special general meeting], so [postponing] it would give every interested and eligible candidate a fair opportunity,” said an insider privy to discussions.

For the first time in the last 18 months, the Srinivasan camp appears to

be on the backfoot, following the Supreme Court directive to bar him from contesting the election. Also, the opposition group of Manohar and Mumbai Cricket Association chief Sharad Pawar has hinted at opening a front against Srinivasan in the election.

A member of the opposing faction said it was “high time” all the current officebearers resign in the wake of the Supreme Court diktat. “For the last one and half years, they are being adamant on holding on to their posts, which is doing no good to Indian cricket’s image,” he said. “At least now, they should resign.

ovak Djokovic saw off Japan’s Kei Nishikori in three sets to reach the final of the ATP World Tour Finals.

The world number one, chasing a third straight season-ending title, came through 6-1 3-6 6-0 at the O2 Arena.

Djokovic recovered his form superbly after reacting badly when the crowd at the O2 Arena in London applauded a double fault in the second set.

Mindley performs for Jamaica

eenage fast bowler Marquino Mindley made a dream start to his WICB Four-day Professional League career when he claimed three wickets and made a third best score of 42 on day one of the Jamaica Franchise’s opener against the Windwards Volcanoes at Sabina Park yesterday.

The 19-year-old, who earlier this year represented the West Indies at the ICC Youth World Cup, ended with figures of three for seven, as the Windwards, replying to Jamaica’s first innings 208, closed the day on 16 for three.

Bowling a controlled line and length, Mindley accounted for the Windwards’ top-two batsmen, opener Devon Smith and André Fletcher, during his first spell at the first-class level, which included three overs, two of which were maidens.

Smith was caught by a diving Jon-Ross Campbell for six after facing three deliveries, while Fletcher was caught behind by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr for five at 12 for two.

Young Windwards batting sensation Sunil Ambris was the other batsman to be dismissed by Mindley.

The 21-year-old, who made a century at the venue last season, fell for a twoball duck after playing back to a delivery that kept low and was adjudged leg before wicket.

In a tailspin

After losing opener Shacaya Thomas was caught behind for two and next batsman Nkrumah Bonner caught at slip for a duck, Jamaica were in a tailspin at three for two.

This was until Campbell and Blackwood teamed up for a third wicket stand of 51.

However, with Blackwood looking the part and growing in confidence on 22, he went for a drive three overs before lunch, and was bowled off the inside edge, thus triggering another collapse before and after the interval.

Football final set for today at Corriverton T

he teachers of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) team will clash with Number 51 Football Club today at the Scottsburg Ground in the final of the Corentyne Cup Football Tournament.

A highly anticipated final is in the making as Number 51 has proven that they have a very good of-

fence with the likes of Pier Tello and Jamal Rose.

Nevertheless, the teachers will fancy their chances as they have played unbeaten in the competition.

The experience of Jarell Rajgopaul and Colin Bowrey will give the teachers a chance of winning the tournament.

Meanwhile before the

final, Manchester and Corriverton Links will meet for the third place battle.

Both teams lost their respective semi-final matches with Manchester losing 31-3 to GTU teachers while Corriverton Links suffered a 2-4 loss to Number 51.

Mominul ton sets target of 449 M

ominul Haque’s fourth Test century laid the foundation for Bangladesh to press on for a win in the third Test in Chittagong. Zimbabwe were set a stiff target of 449 and although they got off at a brisk pace, ending the evening on 71 for 1, survival would be key for the visitors on the final day.

Rubel Hossain completed Brian Chari’s pair in the second over after which Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza ran at the Bangladesh bowlers for the last hour. They made 26 and 43 respectively and looked as dominating as they did in the second evening.

Badree denies match fixing claims

est Indies legspinner Samuel Badree has denied being involved in any kind match fixing or spot fixing after his name was among six disclosed by the Supreme Court in India yesterday as part of the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee report that probed the allegations of betting and spotfixing in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to international and Indian media websites, the International Cricket Council chairman N Srinivasan, his son-inlaw Gurunath Meiyappan, Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra, IPL CEO Sundar Raman along with three cricketers Stuart Binny, Badree and Owais Shah were all named in the report submitted to the Supreme Court. Reports suggested that the names of the three players—three of six named in the report— were inadvertently released.

Contacted by the Express yesterday, Badree said: “It is first time I have seen this.

I have not been contacted and I did not even know that this investigation was going on or that my name would have even been mentioned.

“I would have played with Rajasthan Royals in the particular season they are talking about in 2013 and a couple players from the Rajasthan Royals were involved in spot fixing, so I suppose that through the investigation they would have

come up with other names of persons who would have been in the team and so on.

“But I have no part in match-fixing or spot fixing and as a matter of fact, in that season I played one game with Rajasthan Royals and I am very confused about how my name was in that report, especially without even being told about it prior to reading it on the internet this morning,” the West Indies Twenty20 spinner explained.

“I am waiting for further information because I don’t even know what context my name was mentioned in.

I am strongly against any kind of match-fixing or spot fixing,” Badree added.

The news reports also said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cannot hold its annual elections until the board addresses issues related to the IPL. The top court asked the BCCI, Srinivasan and other non-players who are named in the report to file their objections within four days.

Berbice’s track attack set for today S

everal leading athletes from Districts six (Corentyne) and 15 (New Amsterdam/Canje) are expected to get their last bit of competition when the Flying Ace Cycling Club holds its annually track attack.

The event which is normally held just before the National School’s Athletic Championships caters for cyclist and track athletes who participate in the shorter distances.

This year the event will be held at the Area ‘H’ ground and will see athletes competing in the 100 and 200 meters events as well as the 1500, 3000, and 5000 cycling events.

The highly anticipated

event has attracted a number of big companies as lucrative incentives will be up for grabs including cellular phones.

Among the sponsors of this year’s event are GT&T, Ming’s Optical, Berbice Bridge Company Inc, Amerally Sawmills, Kings Jewellery World, Hand-inHand, Courts Guyana and GEB Security.

Bush Lot going ahead without feature horse race

espite the absence of the feature race, over 50 horses are expected to participate in today’s Bush Lot United Turf Club one-day horse race meet at Sea View Park, Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.

Organisers of the oneday horse race meet were left with no alternative but to reduced the programme to seven races after the feature ‘D’ class race could not acquire the number of entries.

Coordinator Lakeram Sukhdeo told Guyana Times Sport on Saturday that only three horses have entered for the feature race, and as such organisers were left with no other choice but to exclude the race meet from the programme.

Meanwhile, other events on the day’s card are the ‘F’ and Lower race for a winning purse of $500,000 and trophy over 1400 metres.

he Guyana Jaguars go into the third day of round one of the 2014/2015 West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League (WICB PCL) Franchise Four-Day Tournament in a position to set the agenda for the rest of the match.

For the second day running they have dominated proceedings, something they have not been able to say for some considerable while at this level.

Narsingh Deonarine first took advantage of the perfect batting pitch to score his tenth first-class hundred.

The discarded West Indies left-hander remained unbeaten on 110 in an innings decorated with nine fours while occupying the crease for some 257 minutes.

Fast bowler Ronsford Beaton (3-26), leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo (330) and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (318) then demolished the visitors for 94 in 47 overs in their first innings.

At the close of the second day the visitors were four without loss, batting a second time, still 245 runs

in arrears to the Guyana Jaguars first inning total of 343.

Austin Richards, Lyndell Richardso are yet to score and will resume today with the visitors definitely facing an uphill task to save the match with two days remaining.

The hosts resumed on 230-5 with Narsingh Deonarine on 73 and Christopher Barnwell on 24 at the crease but they did not get the positive start they were looking for when the right-hander, Barnwell was trapped leg before by leg-spinner Anthony Martin for 33.

Deonarine, who was in search for his tenth firstclass century was joined by fellow Berbician Anthony Bramble, who batted resolutely for his 46 before the lack of concentration cost him his demised.

Bramble stroke five fours and a six before he was caught at long-on by Jacques Taylor off the bowling of Leonard.

Veerasammy Permaul (4) also gave his wicket away just before lunch when he was trapped leg before to Taylor.

However, the 31-yearold, Deonarine extended the

hosts’ dominance by batting out the morning session. He carried on from where he left off, piloting the innings.

But it was his application to the task moreso than his strokeplay, which was the main feature of Deonarine’s

innings.

Patience was the key word as Deonarine, who meticulously laid the foundation for a sizeable first innings total at the end of day one, ended the session on 101.
