All communities must be clean, safe & free from noise nuisance – Pres Ali P

resident Dr Irfaan Ali has committed to ensuring that all communities across the country are clean, safe, and comfortable places to live, free from noise nuisance and other forms of pollution.

He made the commitment last week as he unveiled his Government’s five-year social and economic development plan, noting, however, that individual responsibility is important to achieving these goals.

“Important to the future is building sustainable communities; communities that can withstand changing weather patterns, communities that are clean. In the next five years, we will continue to build the infrastructure for sustainable communities that are safe and clean, where the streets are well lit, where drains are not clogged or polluted and where noise nuisances

are no more,” the Guyanese leader assured.

He also spoke about the Government’s beautification plan, assuring that all communities will benefit.

“We’re taking deliberate steps toward the beautification of our environment, deliberate steps in creating safe family environments, deliberate steps in creating and improving recreational facilities, deliberate steps in enhancing community life and, importantly, we’re taking deliberate steps in building out the drainage plan for every single region,” the President said.

Already, the Government has conducted consultations with citizens on the Georgetown Drainage Improvement Project, which seeks to enhance the city’s flood resilience through the expansion and modernisation of its aged drainage infrastructure.

President Ali said this initiative will be replicated countrywide. In fact, he said officials have a detailed map of all drainage facilities, including existing pump stations and locations for the establishment of new ones.

He assured that throughout the years, Government initiatives will continue to support waste management programmes, provide resources for national and community clean-up drives and encourage environmentally friendly practices. However, he stressed that lasting change depends on the participation of every citizen.

“We must cherish and care for the very environment that sustains us. The beauty and cleanliness of our surroundings are reflections of our civic pride and personal values. Reducing littering, maintaining pristine public spaces and pre-

serving the natural landscapes of our towns, villages and city are responsibilities that fall to each of us,” President Ali expressed.

Meanwhile, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo had already revealed that the Government will be putting systems in place to relocate commercial activities from residential communities in an effort to improve the comfort of citizens.

He had explained that the Government is considering developing small parks in the back lands of villages where these small business owners, such as welders and small farmers, can operate without impacting the tranquillity of the neighbourhood.

Government officials have also continuously spoken about their plans to install more streetlights across the country, convert

all drains to concrete infrastructure, and improve waste management systems in communities by improving the functioning of municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).

Back in April, the VP had announced an increase in the annual subventions to NDCs from $5 million to $30 million, and from $18 million to $50 million for municipalities across the country.

Recently, Jagdeo hinted that these sums could go up even further come next year.

Penalties

Persons found guilty of creating noise nuisance can face hefty fines ranging from $300,000 to $750,000, along with possible arrest and seizure of equipment.

According to the Guyana National Bureau

of Standards (GNBS), acceptable sound levels in residential areas are 75 decibels during the day and 60 decibels at night.

Head of Investigation and Enforcement at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Surujpaul Singh had said in October that activities exceeding these levels – such as music from bars, workshops, or social events – may attract penalties, but stressed that formal complaints made through Police Stations or EPA channels are essential for swift enforcement.

While no prosecutions have occurred this year, the EPA is pursuing arrangements to allow Police to directly charge offenders, promoting voluntary compliance through soundproofing measures, and warning that monitoring will be intensified during the Christmas season.

resident Dr Irfaan Ali on Tuesday underscored the need for strong, resilient judicial systems that can withstand leadership changes.

He made these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Rafiq Khan, SC, as a Justice of Appeal.

“Once we build strong, resilient systems, we will be able to build an architecture that can withstand every storm. And I want to compliment the Office of the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] and the judiciary for focusing heavily on the system, because that is what we’ll all leave. And all of us leave the office, we

Ali announced that his Administration will be introducing laws that will hold Judges, magistrates, and other legal practitioners more accountable.

He explained that these legislative changes will include robust disciplinary processes to ensure timely delivery of decisions in compliance with existing legislation, as well as the maintenance of high ethical and professional standards.

The nation’s commitment to children

T

he festive season in Guyana was marked by a display of warmth, joy, and national solidarity as President Dr Irfaan Ali and First Lady Arya Ali hosted the annual Christmas celebration for children from residential homes across the country.

Children from various regions were brought together for a day of laughter, music, dancing, and festive cheer. Gifts, toys, and seasonal treats were distributed, and the appearance of Santa Claus and Mrs Claus added an enchanting touch to the occasion. Yet, beyond the surface of holiday merriment, the celebration carried a deeper significance; it underscored the state’s recognition of children as vital stakeholders in the nation’s present and future.

In his address, President Ali highlighted the joy the event brings to State House, but more importantly, he acknowledged the essential role of caregivers in children’s homes. These individuals, he noted, dedicate their lives to the welfare of children, often making personal sacrifices that go unnoticed. By publicly recognising their commitment, the President reinforced the message that the care and development of children is a shared national responsibility. This acknowledgement serves as a reminder that public recognition and support for those on the frontlines of child welfare are crucial to sustaining long-term improvements in the lives of young citizens.

Merry Christmas, Dear Countrymen and women

Dear Editor, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Yuletide carols being sung by a choir.

And folks dressed up like Eskimos… Although it’s been said, many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you.”

So, another year has almost passed, and Christmas is upon us once again. It is the time of year when Christians reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, who they worship as their Lord and Saviour. While Christmas is a festive season that represents peace on earth and goodwill towards all mankind, our sympathy goes out to all those who are sick and bedridden in hospitals and to those who have lost loved ones during the year. This Yuletide season should serve as a period of reflection on our lives and how we must redouble our efforts in 2026 to uplift others, live in peace and harmony and make Guyana a prosperous nation.

If there is ever a time when politics should take a holiday, that time is at Christmas when families come together to celebrate.

It would be very easy to dwell on the negative, but in this blessed and joyous season, let us choose happiness over sadness and embrace the special joy of a Guyanese Christmas. Those who can enjoy the warmth of the sunshine in Guyana and its fine dishes – pepper pot, curry, cook-up, garlic pork, pot-roast chicken,

ham, black cake and ginger beer – should think of the cold winter their fellow Guyanese have to endure in the Diaspora and are overwhelmed with nostalgia at this time of the year.

Christmas is a time of healing and goodwill to all mankind. What more appropriate time can there be for us Guyanese to forget the hurt, the animosity, the persecution, the frustration and the bitterness of the past? We call on each one of you to renew your spirit of love towards one another and hold out the hand of friendship and forgiveness to neighbours, friends, and those from whom we have been estranged and have done you wrong. Let us recapture the spirit of the message that brought joy to the world 2000 years ago by the Babe of Bethlehem. Let us celebrate and be happy and pledge to work together to free Guyana from the monsters of malevolence, unkindness, poverty and crime. We must spare no effort to understand the true meaning of peace, love and happiness.

In this festive season, we join our brothers and sisters to pray for Guyana as one nation, to make sure all the 83,000 square miles of our territory remain intact, for the prosperity of all Guyanese and for common sense and understanding to always prevail in their actions. We must also pray for peace, happiness and goodwill towards all, hatred and bitterness towards none and

for love towards one another.

Perhaps the holidays will give our leaders of every ethnic background a genuine chance to harvest plans that will be inclusive of all in our society and embrace the new year as one of healing, comforting, atonement and cooperation. There is no shortage of sharing and goodwill in Guyana, especially at this time of year. There are stories everywhere of people giving to the less fortunate, the homeless, the elderly, and children. There are many more acts of kindness displayed throughout the holiday season which are not reported.

To those who have and continue to extend a kind, courteous, and helping hand to others, we thank you for a job well done. For if that display of human compassion helps to change the life of just one person for the better, it would have been worth the effort. The spirit of giving has not been made easy for many because of the high cost of living. In fact, there are many others who wanted to give but are not able to do so because they can hardly provide for their families.

However, the Government has shown compassion in giving toys to children in almost every community across the country. But the true meaning of Christmas continues to elude many Guyanese because of their poverty and unbearable living conditions. Too often, it is the greedy, not the needy; the rich and powerful and

not the poor and the powerless that get most of the attention at Christmas.

We commend and admire those who are helping the poor, who through no fault of their own are struggling to make ends meet.

Nothing much has changed in the lives of many during the past years, and from all indications, this may be a very bleak Christmas for some of them. Our fervent wish in this festive season of goodwill is that all will put their shoulders to the wheel to help develop and build Guyana so that all, not only a selected few, can share in the bounties of its prosperity. We love politics, but more importantly, we love Guyana and our fellow Guyanese, especially those who are dedicated and are working tirelessly not only for their own success but for others and the nation.

We graciously ask the Almighty to continue to bless our leaders, our beautiful, beloved and picturesque Guyana and its resilient, loving, caring, peaceful and God-fearing people. We remain proud of the people of Guyana and wish them a bright, successful and happy future and sincerely hope that they live to see and enjoy many more Christmases.

Christmas market initiative Saluting Rohan Kanhai at 90 not out ends on a high note Dear Editor, The Government of Guyana’s Christmas Market has ended, and it did so with a sense of success. A public programme with the potential to be hampered by weather, traffic, or just organisational problems, Guyana’s Christmas Market was instead a model example of the genre. It delivered a warm, festive atmosphere where Guyanese could go shopping, artisans could get attention, and families could enjoy being out together.

Christmas is an expensive season for most families, not least because so many

goods in Guyana are imported. Guyanese consumers can be expected to shop more locally when presented with convenient, attractive alternatives – and in many ways, this market provided just that. By supporting artisans and entrepreneurs to access high-volume traffic with their products, it also provided sellers an opportunity to improve their businesses that could translate into future success, making the market a cost-effective, low-risk investment in the economy.

Christmas in Guyana is also a time of cultural pride,

and while food, crafts, music, and other aspects of the market are year-round activities for many Guyanese, a festive public marketplace was also a means to recognise and participate in the cultural aspects of the season.

Guyana’s Christmas market, as a free and family-friendly activity, was one that could be enjoyed across economic and social classes, and where Guyanese culture was not only expressed in consumption but also in production.

A seasonal market’s success should be determined not just by how many people attend, but by how much

it allowed its participants to do. The current edition’s organisers are to be congratulated, and an opportunity exists for the Government to build on this year’s event to make Guyana’s Christmas market an even more important and impactful event in the coming years.

Through proper logistics, organisation, and support, the market can be a yearly opportunity to help the small Guyanese business, local shoppers, and the broader national culture.

Dear Editor, The local media reported that President Dr Irfaan Ali has called for a modernised, proactive Central Bank that “will not be passive”, marking a decisive moment for our country’s financial sector and our nation’s longterm strategy.

The President emphasised that the Bank of Guyana must modernise payment systems, expand financial inclusion, and act with urgency and credibility to secure Guyana’s economic future.

It is heartening to see these reforms taking centre stage in public policy.

Back on December 13, in a letter to the editor, I advocated for a fundamental shift in how we think about banking, payments, and financial inclusion, particularly emphasising the need for digital rails and modern financial infrastructure if Guyana is to thrive in the digital age.

The President’s announcement is not an isolated policy tweak. It reflects a broader recognition that our banking system must evolve rapidly if we are to unlock the full potential of the Guyanese economy and bring every citizen into the formal financial system.

Simplified account opening, online banking in multiple institutions, and plans for a junior stock exchange are part of this same movement that started some time ago.

This is pivotal because

banking reform is not just about numbers and compliance. It is about who participates in our economy and how they participate.

Nearly half of our people remain underserved by the financial system because banking services still operate with rules and structures forged in another era.

A modern banking ecosystem is a fundamental part of the strategic vision I have been advocating for Guyana. My thesis rests on three core pillars: digitalisation, turn south, and think orange. These are not academic slogans; they are a blueprint for how Guyana can navigate the next 25 or more years of global change: Digitalisation means building infrastructure that allows every Guyanese to participate in the digital economy. This includes satellite communication and digital payments, real-time transfers, mobile wallets, financial services designed for remote and rural citizens, and sovereign control over our financial and data systems. Banking reform must be about making digital finance the default, not the exception.

“Turn South” recognises that Guyana’s geopolitical and economic future lies with nimble engagement across the Global South and especially with South America. The world is realigning. New partnerships are emerging, and countries like China are looking to play a shaping role in

global governance. Guyana must understand these currents and position itself in strategic networks that enhance investment, technology transfer, and economic diversification without compromising sovereignty.

The third pillar, “Think Orange”, is about elevating creativity, culture, innovation, and knowledge as economic drivers. Banking systems must support creators, small enterprises, and digital entrepreneurs with products and services tailored to ideas rather than just physical collateral.

This is where true inclusive growth happens.

The President’s call for Central Bank reform touches all three pillars. It underscores the need for a financial sector that supports digital expansion, enables

participation in new global networks, and finances the ideas economy.

Monday’s announcement builds on and extends the case I made earlier this month. It shows that the Government is open to sustained public discourse from civil society and that even those of us who do not work for the Government can help create fertile ground for policy evolution.

As Guyana moves forward, will we cling to an economy shaped by the past, or will we move with clarity toward a future of inclusion, innovation, and sovereign capability?

Monday’s developments suggest the latter is now truly on the agenda.

Banking reform is the missing link in Guyana’s development strategy

Dear Editor, On December 26, 2025, Rohan Kanhai will celebrate his 90th birthday. While this is an important milestone for anyone, it is particularly important for our nation as a whole.

Rohan was indeed our country’s first superstar in sports. He strode the cricketing areas throughout the world like a giant. His batting was sheer genius, as he played every stroke in the book and invented some of his own. He was a fantastic fielder, particularly in the slips, and in his early stage was one of the best wicketkeepers of his time.

Rohan began his career in the 1950s. It was a very difficult period in our country. At that time the progressive forces in Guyana were confronting colonialism and imperialism as we fought for the independence of Guyana.

That movement was led by a villager of Rohan, the great Cheddi Jagan. The anti-colonial struggle here had grasped the imagination of freedom-loving people the world over but more particularly the people of Asia and Africa. The struggles in British Guiana, Kenya and South Africa had captured international headlines in the 1950s and 60s.

The Guyana cricketers of that period in many ways reflected the struggles of our people. But no one more than Rohan with the bat and Lance Gibbs with the ball.

While batting, sometimes Rohan would explode, and then no bowler could keep him down. It did not

matter if it was pace or spin; he would hit them to all parts of the ground, seemingly merciless yet with an unmatched elegance.

We saw the same with Gibbs and the ball. When he exploded, he was almost unplayable.

Rohan not only played many magnificent innings, of which it is almost impossible to pick his best. They were all stupendous. Those cricket lovers who never saw the master “blasting for runs” must be considered as unfortunates.

He was also a very astute captain of the West Indies.

When the team fell into bad times and began losing a lot, it was Rohan who put it back on its winning ways. He was succeeded by Lloyd, under whose leadership the West Indies enjoyed its longest period at the top of the game.

Rohan became a successful coach after he retired.

His period of coaching in Jamaica is still remembered fondly. Many Jamaicans at that time named their children after the great man.

This included Bob Marley, who had a son named Rohan.

On this occasion of his 90th birthday, I wish to thank him for the pleasure and pride he provided for the cricketing world and for us in Guyana and the Caribbean.

I say, “Happy Birthday, Great One,” and keep going for the century!

Several GRA officers arrested as Police probe multimillion-dollar car tax racket S

everal staff members, including two senior customs officers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), were, up to late Tuesday evening, being questioned as the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) intensified its probe into an alleged car tax racket.

The staff members, Guyana Times understands, are from the Customs and Licensing Departments, who were allegedly implicated in the scam involving one of Guyana’s top auto sales operations along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) and in Georgetown.

It was reported in sections of the media that the car dealership allegedly colluded with a group of customs officers to submit false declarations regarding engine capacity and year of manufacture for several imported vehicles, resulting in the revenue authority being defrauded of hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes.

Investigators also suspect that, in some instances, the declared value of the vehicles was deliberately understated to qualify for lower tax rates. Several imported luxury vehicles are currently under close scrutiny.

In addition, earlier this year, the auto dealer reportedly paid more than $220 million to the GRA in connection with declarations that were allegedly false.

This comes on the heels of several reports emanating from Canada about the

alleged tax-evasion racket, where individuals claimed they had the necessary connections to import high-end vehicles without paying the full amount.

United States-indicted businessman Azruddin Mohamed is one of the persons who was under investigation for undervaluing a luxury vehicle.

In 2020, he had imported a Lamborghini and declared the cost of the vehicle as US$75,300, a value which was used by officials to calculate taxes. However, the GRA later received evidence from the US to show that the vehicle actually cost US$695,000.

He was subsequently charged in May this year for making a false declaration to the Revenue Authority, contrary to Section 217(1)(a)

of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01, and knowingly being concerned in fraudulent evasion, contrary to Section 218(e) of the same Act. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had discontinued charges to facilitate an extradition request from the US.

Conspiring to defraud US & Guyana Govts

Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, are accused of conspiring to defraud the US and Guyanese Governments between 2017 and June 11, 2024. The father-son duo is accused of using a scheme to unlawfully obtain property by transmitting communications via interstate and foreign commerce in violation of US laws. According to the prosecutors, the goal was

to enrich themselves and defraud the Government of Guyana by evading taxes and royalties on gold exports. They allegedly reused Guyana customs declarations and official seals on multiple shipments to make it appear that taxes and royalties had been paid when they had not. The indictment stated that Mohamed’s Enterprise would pay taxes and receive official Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Guyana Gold Board (GGB) seals for one shipment, then reuse those same seals and documents on subsequent, untaxed shipments.

The indictment further alleges that the Mohameds arranged for empty wooden boxes bearing intact GRA and GGB seals to be shipped from gold buyers

in Dubai to Miami and then sent to Guyana. These boxes were then used to export gold while falsely appearing to have cleared customs and tax obligations. US authorities allege the scheme resulted in more than US$50 million in lost taxes and royalties to the Government of Guyana.

Additional indictments detail similar conduct involving shipments of gold, emails allegedly from Nazar Mohamed requesting the sealed boxes from Miami, and exports of over 165 kilograms (kg) of gold per shipment destined for Dubai.

Charges six to nine focus on mail fraud, referencing the shipment of sealed empty boxes from Dubai to Miami, while charge 10 addresses money laundering, which alleges that the Mohameds knowingly transferred funds within the US with the intent to promote unlawful activity. The other charge has to do with Azruddin Mohamed purchasing and importing a Lamborghini sports car to Guyana in 2020. The indictment states that he directed someone to purchase the car for US$680,000, then falsify the invoice to state a value of US$75,300 to understate import taxes. The sanctioned businessman, who is also the leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, is presently before the local courts in relation to the importation of the sports vehicle and, more so, for evading more than $380 million in taxes in violation of Section

217 of the Customs Act. He has also been charged with fraudulent declaration under the same act.

Forfeiture of certain assets

The US Government is seeking forfeiture of certain assets connected to the accused. If convicted, most charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and fines of up to US$250,000, while the money laundering charge carries a fine of US$500,000 or the value of the laundered property. The indictment follows sanctions imposed over a year ago by the US Government on the Mohameds, their businesses, and Permanent Secretary (PS) Mae Thomas in relation to the same allegations. The sanctions are related to the evasion of taxes on gold exports, with OFAC noting that between 2019 and 2023, Mohamed’s Enterprise omitted more than 10,000 kg of gold from import and export declarations and avoided paying more than US$50 million in duty taxes to the Government of Guyana.

Since the imposition of the sanctions, the Guyana Government had suspended the licences of the Mohameds’ various businesses, highlighting that the US-sanctioned businessman is a risk and a threat to Guyana’s financial stability, sovereignty, and diplomacy. Subsequently, several Government entities and local businesses, including commercial banks, have cut ties with the Mohameds.

…Christmas Eve

his evening all of us Guyanese – whether we are Christian or not – gotta celebrate Christmas Eve!! And with the rains arriving on cue, it ain’t gonna dampen our spirits… with the term used most expansively!! Not for us the 200-year-old poem that set the tone for the rest of the world during that time for the observance of the occasion – “A visit from St Nicholas”!! Has anyone nowadays even heard of the poem?? It begins… “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house/Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;/The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,/In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there”!! It’s been sung in enough movies to recognise it, innit??

But you remember that stockings gotta be hung for presents on Christmas Eve, don’t you?? Well, it was this poem – written back in 1823 when slavery was still well ensconced – that so many of what we take to be “Christmas traditions” were codified in!! Like our image of Santa Claus: “He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,/…His eyes – how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!/His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!/His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow/And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;/He had a broad face and a little round belly,/That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly./He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf”!!

But while we might’ve been regaled with the Santa story in school, we never thought he’d be visiting our homes, did we?? Maybe because we didn’t have chimneys for him to slide down?? So as with so many other occasions, our celebration of Christmas Eve is focused on having a good time!! Understandable for a people “whose backs were bent, but not with years” – just continuous toil for the Brits who’d allow us this night and the following day off for making merry!! They supplied the rum – which our toil produced – and we launched our tradition to accompany the rum with prodigious pots of “cook up” during which every scrap of “provisions” we had was thrown in!!

In the villages, that tradition of cook-up and rum had continued on the street corners – but now seem to’ve disappeared. We’ve replaced it with “Christmas Eve parties forcing your Eyewitness to follow Paul Simon’s advice on “50 ways to leave your (inebriated) sport”: Slip out the back, Jack; don’t be coy, Roy; hop on the bus, Gus!!

Yep!! Traditions gonna always evolve so tonight, with every (inebriated) Guyanese now owning a car, let’s start calling cabs to get home!! …election subtlety The Commonwealth Group that observed this year’s General and Regional Elections has released its report.

And as one of its major recommendations, propose that we reintroduce presidential debates!! While they concede that, happily, the campaign wasn’t totally focused on race – clearly Black Pudding Man’s diatribes were dismissed! – they claimed with straight faces that debates would foster and promote issue-based campaigns!!

Now, why your Eyewitness feels the Commonwealth Observers gotta be jerking our chain, is that they saw that during the campaign, Sanction Man was incapable of stringing together more than a single sentence when asked even the most innocuous of questions!! And that one sentence was “I will get back to you shortly”!!! To have him debating, say, Irfaan Ali, would be like asking him to race against Lando Norris – the Formula 1 champion – in the Monte Carlo Grand Prix!! He’s got a car (Lamborghini) like he’s got a mouth – but he’s just not in the same league!!

He should listen to the (diplomatic) Commonwealth Observers!! …jumping the gun US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a video claiming the US Coast Guard “apprehended” an oil tanker off Venezuela. But President Trump was forced to clarify that “We’re actually pursuing” the tanker!!

She made the US look weak.

resident Dr Irfaan Ali and First Lady Arya Ali on Tuesday hosted a Christmas celebration for children from several homes across Guyana, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to their care, development and future.

Held at State House, the annual event brought together children from across the country for a day filled with laughter and festive cheer. The children were treated to goodies, toys, music, singing and dancing, and delighted in meeting

Santa Claus and Mrs Claus, who added to the magic of the occasion.

In remarks, President Ali said that hosting the children each year brings immense personal joy to himself and the first lady.

“It gives us the greatest joy to be able to have all of the children with us,” the President said, as he welcomed the young guests alongside members of Cabinet and staff of State House.

He extended Christmas greetings on behalf of his

family and the Government, telling the children, “On behalf of myself, the First Lady Arya, Ilan, Zayd, the Cabinet, and all the members of staff here at State House, we want to say to all of you, Merry Christmas. It is our honour to host you every single year.”

President Ali also used the occasion to recognise and thank the carers who work tirelessly in children’s homes across the country, describing their role as one of daily sacrifice and devotion.

“It also gives us great joy to say thank you to those who work with our children in different homes, the carers who sacrifice every single day, who put in the hours to ensure that these children are taken care of,” he said, prompting applause from those gathered.

Addressing the children directly, he added, “Everybody say, ‘Thank you… and we love you.”

The President underscored that the Christmas celebration is part of a broader, year-round engagement with children through the Office of the First Lady and various Ministries. He assured that these efforts will continue and expand in the years ahead.

“Throughout the year, we have had many, many interactions with children here at State House, through the Office of the First Lady, through different ministers. We have been reaching out to homes all across the country, and we’re going to continue to do that,” President Ali said.

The Court of Appeal Act was recently updated to increase the complement of Judges sitting in that court from nine to eleven. Three Judges preside over a case at the Appeal Court at any given time. Therefore, the complement of eleven allows for two extra Judges to be available when one Judge is out of the jurisdiction or unavailable for some reason.

an illegal firearm and several live rounds of ammunition during an intelli-

The Guyana Police Force reported that between January 1 and November 9, 2025, approximately 100 firearms were taken off the streets.

These include 57 pistols, 12 revolvers, 29 shotguns,

The Police also stated that of the 100 firearms seized, about 32 originated from the USA and Brazil, while 14 were from Austria and Italy, five from Venezuela, three each from Turkey and Belgium, and one from Germany.

Miner stabbed to death during altercation – 1 suspect apprehended

2-year-old Michael John Benn, also called “Mikey”, a gold miner from Charity, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death during an altercation at Arangoy Landing, Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), on Sunday.

Police stated that on the day in question, the now-deceased man was at a liquor shop in the area when he became involved in an altercation with two males, during which he was stabbed in the chest.

n the day after he was arrested with two illegal firearms at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraimas, Region Nine, 42-year-old Gerald Isaacs was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined $100,000 on two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence.

Police stated that last Sunday, ranks from the Karasabai Police Station responded to a report regarding an alleged simple larceny that reportedly occurred on Friday, December 19, at Karasabai Village.

However, as part of the investigation, police ranks proceeded to a residence at Jawarie Village, where a search was conducted, resulting in the discovery of one .36-gauge shotgun and

one 20-gauge shotgun in a bedroom area.

As such, Isaacs was arrested and escorted, along with the firearms, to the Lethem Police Station.

Meanwhile, Isaacs appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court,

where the two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence were read to him.

He pleaded guilty and was fined $50,000 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on each count. The sentence will run concurrently.

Based on information received, one of the suspects is presently in Police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other suspect.

body was being stored at the Aranka Police Station awaiting transportation to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where a post-mortem would be conducted.

s s i s t a n t Commissioner of Police and Commander of Division Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara) Mahendra Siwnarine on Tuesday reported that serious crime in his division is down by 25.4 per cent for 2025 when compared to previous years.

He was at the time addressing the gathering at the Division’s annual Christmas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony at the Diamond Tip Entertainment Venue, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

Furthermore, the Commander stated that armed robbery also recorded a 16.7 per cent decrease, reflecting the sustained efforts of detectives, uniformed ranks, and divisional leadership working collaboratively.

He, however, attributed the reduction to intelligence-led policing, increased visibility, coordinated operations, and strong sup-

port from the community and stakeholders across the Division.

In terms of traffic management and public safety, the Commander noted that there is an increase in vehicular movement due to infrastructure development and changing traffic patterns.

He highlighted the continued efforts of traffic ranks in managing congestion, ensuring road safety, and enforcing traffic laws, particularly during peak periods and the holiday season.

The Commander, nevertheless, underscored the importance of strong relationships with the community and stakeholders, noting that public cooperation continues to play a vital role in crime prevention and detection.

However, Siwnarine reminded ranks that the ceremony serves not only as a moment of celebration but also as an opportunity to motivate ranks to continue striving for excellence, pro-

In looking ahead, he referenced ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects within the Division, noting that improved road networks and increased activity will require adaptive policing strategies and continued commitment from ranks.

“Lil Man” remanded for Issano Landing murder

wenty-seven-yearold Mike Caesar, also known as “Lil Man” or “Spanish Man”, of Blue Berry Hill, Wismar, Linden, was arraigned on Tuesday for the murder of Samuel Marciano, which occurred on November 2, 2025, at 14 Miles Landing, Issano, Middle Mazaruni River.

Caesar was arrested last Friday following the discovery of a 9mm Taurus pistol along with 11 live rounds of matching ammunition in New Amsterdam, Berbice.

He appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where the murder charge was read to him. He was not required

s the old song says – Christmas comes but once a year – so let us enjoy this festive season.

Ruminations extends greetings for a blessed holiday season to all of Guyana. The Christmas holiday season is when we put aside our differences, embrace each other and spread joy across the nation.

Let us take some time off and appreciate the good things about our country. One good thing is the harmony we have during holidays Dr Leslie Ramsammy like the Christmas holidays. While Christmas is a Christian event, the Christmas holiday season is a time when Guyanese of all religious backgrounds and all “walks” of life, from everywhere in Guyana, come together in harmony. So Ruminations wishes every one of our sisters and brothers a blessed and happy time.

In some ways, Christmas 2025 in Guyana is different from ones before. We note that public Christmas trees and decorations are across the country. At the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, in Georgetown, in every region, there are public Christmas trees which have become part of the celebrations. This year, the Christmas Market, beautifully decorated at the Kingston Seawall, is an attraction. Main Street’s Christmas Village is bigger and better. The cleaned-up and upgraded Stabroek Market Square, a work-in-progress, offers another attraction in Guyana for both international and internal visitors. In every region, we have one or more public Christmas trees for people to visit and marvel at. Many RDCs and NDCs in Guyana have begun to create a day for lighting the Christmas trees, a day when villagers come out to make the day special. In some ways, we have started a friendly competition where each region and each NDC compete to see who has created the best Christmas tree lighting event in the country.

But as we cloak ourselves in the joy and merriment of the season, let us not forget that there are those among us who need support. We commend the Government, the political parties, private sector entities, faith-based organisations and individuals who have been distributing toys and other goodies to children around the country. This Christmas, like ones before it, many Christmas parties for the elderly and for children are being held or have been held. This too is a special thing in our country. These are the things that have come to symbolise the spirit of togetherness in our country.

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport for more than two decades now has provided another level of flair for the Guyanese Christmas.

From welcoming music, often with a steel band, visitors are greeted with Guyanese Christmas cake and drinks. The airport itself is transformed each Christmas with Christmas trees and decorations, and for 2025, the colour, warmth and festive spirit start visitors off with a spirit of a very special Christmas and holiday season. For Christmas 2025, the management and staff of the CJIA really have outdone themselves.

But Ruminations joins President Irfaan Ali in urging and begging citizens to be careful on our roadways. President Irfaan Ali on several occasions recently has highlighted the recklessness of drivers on our roadways. He is urging citizens to use the roadways safely by not drinking and driving and by not speeding. Ruminations thanks President Ali for highlighting this problem.

Guyana is not unique in that the holiday season sees a significant rise in traffic accidents due to increased congestion, more alcoholimpaired and distracted drivers, and people in a hurry generally because of shopping and going from event to event. This is particularly true on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, often resulting in serious injuries or fatalities from preventable mistakes like speeding, intoxicated drivers, tailgating, and lack of focus.

Vehicular traffic accidents are a major cause of deaths around the world. Global traffic mortality sees around 1.2 million deaths annually (around 15 deaths per 100,000 people). It remains the leading killer for ages five to 29, disproportionately affecting pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists in low- and middle-income countries, where 92 per cent of vehicular deaths occur despite safer rates in high-income nations. While overall rates are down, meeting the goal to halve them by 2030 requires urgent action, especially in developing nations.

According to the World Bank, Guyana’s road death rate is among the higher vehicular mortality rates in the world and is presently at the global average – 15 per 100,000 people. Prime Minister Brigadier Mark Phillips stated recently that Guyana had 574 crashes and 642 deaths between 2020 and 2024, including 24 children. The staggering statistics revealed by the Prime Minister are testimony to a road crisis our country can no longer ignore.

Guyana wants to change this narrative. It has set an ambitious national target: reducing annual road fatalities to fewer than 50 by 2030, a goal that is part of a new national safety initiative and one that will be partially backed by a World Bank investment. Last October, Minister Ashni Singh and World Bank Vice President Susana Cordeiro Guerra formalised financing for the Integrated Transport Corridors Project – a major upgrade of Guyana’s road network. The project aims to strengthen key routes across Regions Three, Four, Five, Six and 10, improving safety, climate resilience, and access to essential services such as schools, hospitals, and markets.

The President wants to change this national tragedy. It is why he has seriously begun to question whether drivers’ licences in Guyana are not corrupted. He announced a major crackdown on fraudulent driver’s licences, giving individuals six weeks to surrender illegally obtained licences or face prosecution, following a Government “post-audit” revealing significant systemic issues like more practical certificates issued than theory passes. This move aims to clean up the licensing process, introduce technology to detect fraud, and hold officials accountable, warning that those with invalid licences must come forward to avoid severe penalties.

This is the season for joy and merriment. Let us be careful on the road. Merry Christmas, all.

s Guyana prepares to welcome an estimated three million visitors by 2030, Guyanese across all sectors are being urged to position themselves for the transformative economic boom on the horizon.

The call was made

by Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Susan Rodrigues during a live broadcast on Tuesday.

“I want every Guyanese to see themselves as playing a part in our tourism economy. Tourism is not led by a specific group of people. All of us, every single Guyanese all across this country, all of us have a role to play in ensuring that Guyana’s tourism sector grows and is sustainable,” she emphasised.

She emphasised that “all of us can participate in the economy through tourism”.

“From the moment a visitor touches down at the airport or any port of entry, jobs are created; opportunities are created in transportation, in food, in accommodation, in tour guiding… all of which are done by ordinary people – small- and medium-sized businesses,” Minister Rodrigues explained.

“The biggest or the largest beneficiaries of tourism in Guyana will be our smalland medium-scale businesses, and that is something that I don’t wish any Guyanese; I don’t wish for it to escape any Guyanese because all of us have a role to play,” she fur-

ther highlighted.

Rodrigues explained that since 2020, the Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Administration has been investing heavily in developing the country’s tourism sector, from providing support to tourism operators through grants and training to building out the necessary infrastructure and incentivising investments in the industry.

“We have trained 8000 persons through the Guyana Tourism Authority who receive training in hospitality, in customer service, in food preparation, and in how to upskill their businesses in

tour operators. We’ve trained many tour operators to offer a higher quality of tours and also in customer service,” the minister outlined.

She also highlighted that over the last five years, some 600 new hotel rooms have been added, with more to come.

“Fifteen hotels are currently under construction, upon the completion of which we will add 2000 rooms to our room stock,” the minister noted, adding that tourism growth has also been increased with nine new airlines entering the market between 2020 and 2025.

“And we will continue to expand our airlifts, those airlines that are operating here, and also will continue to add

President Ali said if the current trend continues, Guyana is poised to close 2025 with an overall 20 per cent growth in total visitor arrivals, the highest annual total ever recorded. “And if current trends hold, Guyana is projected to close December 2025 with at least a 20 per cent overall rise in arrivals,” the President declared. “This will be the highest annual total in our country’s tourism history and reinforces the view that Guyana’s moment on the world stage is here and is being built stronger and stronger.”

griculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has reported that aquaculture production is expected to increase by more than 50 per cent by the end of 2025, largely due to significant investment in the brackish water shrimp industry.

Speaking in a social media post on Tuesday, the Minister highlighted the performance of the sector, noting that since the implementation of the brackish water shrimp project, production has surged dramatically.

water shrimp production has increased from 9933 kilograms [kg] per month to 129,000 kilograms per month, representing a more than 2300 per cent annual increase from 2021 to 2025,” Mustapha stated.

According to the agriculture Minister, aquaculture farmers are estimated to have earned over $4.8 million as a result of the brackish water shrimp project.

He added that the Government will continue to invest in the development of the agriculture sector, with a strong focus on utilising technology to ensure higher productivity, reduced production costs, improved food quality, greater sustainability, and enhanced agricultural resilience.

Mustapha said these initiatives are aligned with the Government’s broader objective of creating a food-secure economy that reduces regional dependency and contributes to achieving the country’s “2025 plus five” targets.

He noted that Guyana’s agriculture sector continues to perform exceptionally well despite the rapid expansion of the oil and gas industry.

Honey production

Another major breakthrough highlighted was growth in honey produc-

tion.

“As part of our commitment to resuscitating the apiculture industry, honey production is expected to grow by at least 35 per cent. We have invested approximately $75 million in the National Honey Expansion Programme and the establishment of a pre-rearing facility,” he said.

He also emphasised that Guyana is not producing solely for domestic consumption but is aligning its production systems with international benchmarks for quality, market access, and financial stability.

“We are directly linking our farmers to regional markets by improving transport, ports, and logistics. This is why our ongoing infrastructure works – from critical drainage and irrigation projects to the impoldering of farmlands – are so vital,” he added.

The livestock sector to grow by 9%

Turning to the livestock sector, the Minister said continued investments have resulted in growth in the production of poultry meat, beef, mutton, and honey. He noted that the livestock sector is expected to grow by at least nine per cent by the end of 2025, driven by genetic improvement, pasture devel-

opment, the introduction of modern animal housing such as tunnel houses, local production of hatching eggs, and the construction and operationalisation of an adult hatchery.

The Minister further stated that overall agricultural production is expected to grow by at least nine per cent by the end of 2025, with notable increases anticipated in rice, coconuts, soybeans, fruits and vegetables, poultry meat, honey, and aquaculture.

The Government has reiterated that the future of the agriculture sector lies in the establishment of large-scale production hubs and megafarms aimed at positioning Guyana as a key regional supplier of agricultural commodities.

According to the Government, continued investment will focus on expanding large-scale farming operations, particularly in livestock, dairy, and sugar production, while encouraging private sector partnerships and consortia similar to those established for corn and soy cultivation.

The Government emphasised that priority will be given to investments that are sustainable, profitable, and resilient, as it seeks to strengthen food security and expand agricultural exports across the region.

Dec 31 deadline set for eco-lodge proposals – Tourism Minister T

ourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues has announced that the deadline for the submission of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for the construction of eco-lodges and resorts in Guyana is December 31, 2025.

The disclosure was made during a live broadcast on Tuesday, as the Minister outlined the Government’s continued push to attract private investment into the tourism sector, particularly in nature-based and community-driven tourism projects.

According to Rodrigues, the RFP initiative targets 10 strategic locations across various regions of the country, aimed at expanding Guyana’s ecotourism product while creating new economic opportunities for communities.

“To encourage investment, we have issued a request for proposals for the

construction of eco-lodges and resorts at 10 locations across the country,” the Minister said. “That expression of interest period will close on the 31st of December this year, and we are looking forward to the exciting proposals that are being submitted.”

She explained that the initiative is designed to stimulate private sector participation, generate employment, and enhance Guyana’s appeal as a destination for travellers seeking adventure, culture, and nature-based experiences.

“These are the kinds of investments that will create jobs and make Guyana a more attractive destination to travellers who are seeking adventure, culture, and nature-based tourism – which is an essential part of Guyana’s tourism experience,” Rodrigues noted.

By leveraging the country’s rich biodiversity, indigenous heritage, and pristine landscapes, officials believe tourism can serve as a long-term driver of economic growth beyond traditional sectors.

With the December 31 deadline approaching, the Ministry of Tourism is encouraging interested investors, local and international, to submit proposals that align with Guyana’s vision for responsible, inclusive, and environmentally conscious tourism development.

Over 480 City Council workers to receive $40,000 bonus – Mayor

ore than 480 workers of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council will receive a $40,000 bonus, Mayor Alfred Mentore has announced.

Addressing the 30-member City Council, Mayor Mentore said that following a review of the municipality’s finances, approval was granted for the payment of the bonus to 483 workers on or before December 31, 2025.

Mayor Mentore explained that the decision was taken to ensure that workers receive financial support during the Christmas season, particularly as discussions on retroactive pay and other cash benefits remain unresolved.

“The number one issue here today is where we stand from a financial standpoint and how we’d like to reward our hard-working officers as well as staff. From my understanding, we have over, or just around, 483 staff members in different departments of this council.

Many of those staff members are part of different unions,” he said.

He added, “We’ve approved a $40,000 one-off bonus for every staff member of this Council so that they

can have that to use for their Christmas. We ask that this money be paid by December 31, 2025. This is the position we have taken from the Council’s standpoint to address this issue and provide something for staff members, especially when they might not get the cash back this year. They might receive it sometime next year.”

According to the Mayor, the unions requested a onemonth salary increase. He said the City Council is considering options that are reasonable and workable but emphasised that a full one-month increase is not feasible at this time. Any retroactive adjustments or future increases would depend on provisions in the national budget, which are not currently before the Council.

In the meantime, Mentore noted that the Council is continuing its practice of providing one-off bonuses to staff, as was done last year. He added that these bonuses are intended to help cushion the impact of the rising cost of living and represent the maximum support the Council can afford under current financial constraints.

Mentore has stated that discussions on percentage-based salary increases

for City Council staff will require detailed and substantive conversations with the unions.

He noted that the Guyana Labour Union (GLU), led by Carvil Duncan, has several arbitration matters that the Council will work to resolve. Mentore also highlighted the need to address promotions within the City Constabulary, where several officers have yet to receive advancements.

Meanwhile, M&CC recently conducted on-the-spot promotions within its City Constabulary Department, recognising the long service of its officers.

The promotions were awarded to long-serving members who have demonstrated consistent commitment, discipline, and loyalty in the execution of their duties, contributing significantly to maintaining law, order, and public safety across the city.

Mentore, along with counsellors and senior officers, commended the promoted ranks for their years of service and encouraged them to continue upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

He emphasised that the pro-

motions reflect the Council’s commitment to rewarding hard work and motivating staff within municipal security services.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mentore has also acknowledged ongoing discussions between the M&CC and both the Guyana Local

Government Officers’ Union (GLGOU) and the Guyana Labour Union (GLU) regarding staff demands for improved compensation.

enezuela’s National Assembly has passed a law enacting harsh penalties for those who support or help finance blockades and acts of piracy, including up to 20 years in prison.

The legislation was passed on Tuesday after the United States seized oil tankers linked to Venezuela, acts that the Government of President Nicolas Maduro has denounced as lawless acts of

piracy.

“This law seeks to protect the national economy and avoid the erosion of living standards for the population,” lawmaker Giuseppe Alessandrello said while presenting the law before the National Assembly, controlled by Maduro’s governing party.

The US has carried out a series of increasingly aggressive measures over the past several months, deploying sizeable military

forces to Latin America, seizing oil tankers, killing dozens of people in military strikes on what it says are drug-trafficking boats, and threatening land strikes on Venezuela itself.

Russia pledges “full support” for Venezuela Mexican Navy plane crashes R off US coast, killing 5 A

small Mexican Navy plane transporting a medical patient and seven others has crashed off the southern coast of the United States, killing at least five persons.

In a statement on Monday, Mexico’s Navy said that four of the persons on board were Navy officers, and four were civilians, including a child.

Two people survived the crash, while one person remains missing, it said.

The Mexican Marine Corps said in a statement that it is sending “its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident”.

US Coast Guard Petty Officer Luke Baker told The Associated Press news agency that at least five on board had died, but he did not identify which passengers.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

60 Minutes episode investigating a brutal prison in El Salvador, which CBS News’s editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, pulled from the air on Sunday, appeared online on Monday after appearing on a Canadian TV app.

The segment, which runs for nearly 14 minutes and was viewed by the Guardian, provides an in-depth look at the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Cecot) prison in El Salvador. It opens with footage of the mega-prison and shows detainees being shackled upon arrival in El Salvador.

“The first thing he told us was that we would never see the light of day or night again. He said, ‘Welcome to hell,’” recalled Luis Muñoz Pinto, a Venezuelan college student now living in Colombia, who speaks in the segment.

He had travelled to the US seeking asylum and was arrested in 2024 at his appointment with US Customs and Border Protection in California.

il prices settled higher on Tuesday as investors assessed stronger-than-expected US economic growth and the risk of disruptions to oil supply from Venezuela and Russia.

Brent crude futures settled 31 cents, or 0.5 per cent, higher at US$62.38 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 37 cents, or 0.64 per cent, at US$58.38.

Prices had risen by more than two per cent on Monday, with Brent registering its biggest daily gain in two months and WTI climbing the most since November 14.

The US economy grew faster than expected, driven by robust consumer spending, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said in its initial estimate of third-quarter GDP on Tuesday.

"The market is trying to decide whether we should be more excited about the demand coming from the strong growth or worried that the Fed is going to have to put on the brakes on that growth to get inflation under control," said Phil Flynn, senior analyst with the Price Futures Group.

Other data painted a mixed picture of the economy.

ussian missile and drone attacks killed at least three Ukrainians, including a child, on Tuesday, triggering widespread emergency power cuts and prompting neighbouring Poland to scramble jets.

The attacks, days after another round of US-led talks to end the nearly four-yearold war, hit energy facilities in western regions the hardest, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said.

The national gas company Naftogaz said Russian strikes hit production facilities belonging to its extraction subsidiary Ukrnafta, causing "serious damage" and prompting the shutdown of some facilities.

It gave no details on where the strikes occurred but said crews were repairing the damage. No casualties were reported.

In the northern Chernihiv

region on the Russian border, the local power distribution company reported damage to its facilities, cutting power to parts of the city of Chernihiv.

Poland, a NATO member bordering western Ukraine, said Polish and allied aircraft were deployed to protect Polish airspace after Russian strikes targeted areas near the border.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had targeted at least 13 regions as Ukrainians prepared to celebrate Christmas with their families in an attack that showed Russian President Vladimir Putin was not serious about peace talks.

group of 130 kidnapped Nigerian schoolchildren freed by the Government on Sunday are expected to be reunited with their families in the central Niger state on Monday, ending a monthlong ordeal that drew global concern.

Last month, unknown gunmen took hundreds of schoolchildren and 12 teachers from St Mary’s Catholic School in the Papiri community in Niger State, which runs west from the capital, Abuja, to neighbouring Benin.

Fifty children escaped not long after, and another 100 were released on December 7.

“Another 130 abducted Niger State pupils released; none left in captivity,” the Presidential spokesperson

Sunday Dare posted on X on Sunday.

The last group of children were reportedly released near Nigeria’s border with Benin, but as with the previous release, there was no mention of how they regained freedom or what group was behind the abduction. Other details also remain unclear.

Kidnap-for-ransom abductions represent one angle of Nigeria’s multifaceted security crises. Gangs of armed bandits roam the vast countryside in the north, while jihadists operate with external support from surrounding areas in the Sahel.

The abundance of non-state actors has left rural areas particularly vulnerable, and Nigeria’s under-equipped security agencies continue to be stretched.

Louvre adds security bars to U window used by jewel thieves

A

crane was stationed outside the Louvre Museum in Paris on Tuesday – but this time it wasn't being used by jewel thieves stealing some of the nation's historic treasures.

Instead, the machine was operated by maintenance workers in security helmets and high-visibility vests as a crew installed metal bars to the now-infamous second-floor window.

A team of thieves posing as workers used a basket lift to break in through that window on October 19. The robbers entered the museum's Apollo Gallery and smashed open display cases to steal nine pieces of jewellery. All four suspected thieves have been arrested and charged, but none of the jewels have been recovered except for a crown that was dropped as

the group escaped.

The theft exposed security lapses at the world's most-visited museum. A recent security audit found that 35 per cent of the rooms in the Denon Wing, where the stolen jewels were displayed, are not monitored by security cameras, according to Radio France. The gems were also not privately insured, in accordance with French law.

Other security upgrades are coming, the museum's director said in November.

Installation of new anti-intrusion systems was set to begin by early December, while more than 100 new cameras are expected to be up and running by the end of 2026, CBS News previously reported. (Excerpt from CBS News)

S President Donald Trump was listed as a passenger on the private jet of late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein eight times between 1993 and 1996, a new email released by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) says.

"Donald Trump travelled on Epstein's private jet many more times than previously has been reported (or that we were aware of)," reads the January 7, 2020 email from an assistant US attorney.

Trump's name on the flight record does not indicate wrongdoing. In 2024, Trump wrote, "I was never on Epstein's plane." He has denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.

The prosecutor's email was sent on January 7, 2020, and is part of an email chain which includes the subject heading "RE: Epstein flight records".

The sender and recipient are redacted, but the bottom of the email says 'Assistant US Attorney, Southern

District of New York' – with the name redacted.

The email states that Trump "is listed as a passenger on at least eight flights between 1993 and 1996, including at least four flights on which [Epstein's associate Ghislaine] Maxwell was also present. He is listed as having travelled with, among others and at various times, Marla Maples, his daughter Tiffany, and his son Eric."

"On one flight in 1993, he and Epstein are the only two listed passengers; on another, the only three passengers are Epstein, Trump, and the then-20-year-old..." The rest of the sentence has been redacted.

It continues: "On two other flights, two of the passengers, respectively, were women who would be possible witnesses in a Maxwell case."

On a day she was newly crowned the No. 1 T20I bowler in the ICC rankings, Deepti missed a T20I for the first time since 2019 – after 92 straight games – because of a mild fever.

Harmanpreet Kaur has often turned to her when in search of control, but on Tuesday, Rana fit into the role with ease.

Playing her first T20I in India since 2016 – she played 15 away from home in between – Rana's first

task was to stop a belligerent Athapaththu, and she delivered. She kept the Sri Lanka captain guessing with flight and dip before dismissing her. With Athapaththu itching to cut loose, Rana generously flighted one.

It landed slightly shorter than Athapaththu expected because of the dip, and she ended up miscuing it to long-off.

Rana then returned with Perera and Samarawickrama scoring at a good tempo and bowled a maiden, and that turned the tide. It allowed left-arm spinner Charani to slip in a few quiet overs, which resulted in Perera's dismissal. Vaishnavi also returned to pick up her first international wicket, with Charani, who denied her in the first T20I by dropping a dolly at short fine leg, taking a simple catch at the same spot after Nilakshika Silva topedged a sweep.

Sri Lanka hit 11 boundaries in the first nine overs but could hit only two fours in the rest of their innings.

They lost six for 24 to be restricted to a below-par total for the second game in a row, which was never going to challenge the hosts.

Three run-outs for a second game in a row did not help matters either.

If Sunday was an opportunity missed by Shafali, she more than made up for it on Tuesday. She was happy to bide her time at the start, with Smriti Mandhana being the aggressor. Once Mandhana fell, caught at point in a bid to hit Kavisha Dilhari's offspin inside out

over the off side, Shafali took centre stage. Inoka Ranaweera's left-arm spin with the field restrictions in place was just the tonic she needed.

Shafali hit Ranaweera for successive fours in the penultimate over of the powerplay – both by dancing down the track and lofting her over cover. She then took apart Athapaththu's offspin, hitting her for four, six, and four in the sixth over of the chase: first sweeping a short ball through backward square leg, then thumping a full ball straight into the sight screen, and then lifting one over extra cover.

GBA hails successful National Open tournament

he Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Boxing Gym once again underlined its supremacy over the local scene after retaining the Champion Gym title at the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Championships, which concluded over the weekend at the National Gymnasium.

Continuing a period of sustained dominance, the GDF finished with seven

most successful gym of the tournament. GBA President Steve Ninvalle applauded the "combined and extra effort" of his executive, coaches, referees/Judges and boxers which allowed for a successful tournament.

"It was indeed heartening to observe the collective push in the same direction," Ninvalle said.

The body expressed satisfaction with the overall level of competition, stating that the performances on display reflected the hard work and commitment shown by gyms throughout the year.

The association further indicated that it will now take a short break before resuming activities in the new year, as it continues to roll out its development and exposure initiatives aimed at strengthening boxing across Guyana.

UDFA/Banks DIH year-end Christmas futsal reaches knockout stage

he teams with unblemished records, including defending champions Silver Shattas, Winners Connection, Capital Football Club (FC) and Milerock, are through to the quarter-finals after preliminary round play ended on Sunday in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA)/Banks DIH year-end Christmas futsal tournament in Linden.

Playing at the tournament venue in Retrieve in Linden, the defending champions Silver Shattas topped Group A with seven points, despite being level on similar points with Topp XX, after both sides got two wins and a draw; but goal difference went in favour of Silver Shattas.

In their final round robin match against Group A rivals Hi Stars, Shattas,

who had a 3-3 stalemate with Topp XX, won 4-3 with Damian Williams getting two goals and Jehu Regis and Omar Brewley knocking in the other goals.

Hi Stars’ goals were registered by Jermaine King, Clinton Charles and Shemain Samuels.

On the night, also in Group A, Topp XX gained victory via the walkover route, for their second win, following a no-show by Amelia’s Ward Panthers.

In a Group B encounter, Capital FC rebounded from a goal down to whip Blueberry Hill 3-1, with Emmanuel Atkins leading their charge with a brace, and the other goal registered by Mortimer Giddings Jr. Shaka Lewis Cedric had given hopes for Blueberry Hill when he netted the opening goal of the game.

President’s Futsal witnesses dramatic Round of 16 commencement

here was much excitement to behold at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Monday night, signalling a thrilling start to the Women’s Championship and the Round of 16 in the men’s division in the President’s 3rd Futsal Championship.

The evening’s proceedings began with a win for Street Vybz, who defeated

Westminster Secondary 9-0 in the first women’s game.

Shania Easton (fourth, seventh), Afeena Baptist (14th, 15th), and Anna Frank (17th, 17th) all registered braces, while Tyneshia Thorne (second), Amena McPherson (13th), and Latasha Sutherland (19th) registered one goal each.

Next, Lady Royals cruised past Tucville Terrace

5-0. Shanic Thornhill (third, fourth) and Tiandi Smith (seventh, 14th) both netted twice, while Melina Larson found the back of the net in the 10th to account for their five.

A thrilling encounter between Team Family and Bent Street B was the perfect start to the men’s competition on the night, with the former pulling off a tense, last-minute win.

Team Family went ahead in the 4th through Devon Padmore before Bent Street B’s Randy Roberts and Shem James put them ahead in the 18th and 20th.

The presentation was made by Sheryar Hussain, who said the gesture reflected the strong bonds that exist among law enforcement officers beyond borders and highlighted

the unifying power of sport.

Delivering remarks, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Ravindradat Budhram, who was present at the ceremony, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the NYPD Cricket Team, Lt Dyal and family for their support. He noted that sports continue to play an important role within the GPF, contributing to discipline, teamwork and the overall wellbeing of ranks.

Mr Budhram said initiatives such as these help to build morale and encourage positive engage-

our months ago, Malcolm Hendricks donned the Chase’s Academic Foundation uniform for the first time, a clinical shift from Charlestown Secondary, with whom he plied his trade on the schools’ football circuit.

Last month, Hendricks, cutting it close playing against his former team, had his first taste of success, lifting the Republic Bank league trophy alongside Chase’s Academy.

Then it was down to the KFC Goodwill International tournament, another title that Chase retained, but for Hendricks, his wildest

dreams came true when he was announced as the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP).

“Well, to me, it means a lot because it’s my first big tournament with Chase, and it’s my first KFC. I played to defend it, and I defend it well, and I’m proud, with everyone who supported me through this journey. I’m very happy with this trophy,” Hendricks told media operatives following a tense finish in Sunday night’s final.

As indicated by Sport Consultant Narada Wilson, the MVP will benefit from a one- to three-month

stint at the Clube Atletico Penapolense in neighbouring Brazil in 2026.

Hendricks, after receiving the news, was brimming with excitement regarding the development.

Trying to gather his words, the defender shared, “To be honest, I’m really excited, really, really excited. I can’t even express how excited I am. I just got to go and see, put in my work and wish for the best.”

Now looking back, Hendricks believes that his move to Chase’s Academy was the right one to make.

“To be honest, yeah, moving to Chase was not really my first option, but it was the only one to make, but I made it, and now I’m playing here.

I scored in Republic Bank, scored in KFC, and yeah, we’re champions,” the young footballer explained.

Last year’s KFC MVP, Raydon Krammer, a defender from the same institution, also benefited from a similar opportunity.
