T

he $30 billion syndicated bond the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) inherited from the former A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government has so far forced the Government to shell out a whopping $606 million in just interest payments.

This was revealed during Monday’s sitting of the National Assembly, during which Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh fielded questions from the main parliamentary Opposition on the Guyana Sugar Corporation

The rationale for borrowing the bond was to recapitalise closed estates so they could be divested.

This, however, never came to fruition

(GuySuCo).

Specifically, he was asked how much of the $30 billion syndicated bond has been spent on GuySuCo since August 2020. According to the Finance Minister, $17.5 billion of the $30 billion syndicated bond that was negotiated has been turned over from the trustees to the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

“A total of $17.478 billion, net of trustee fees of $121 million, has been disbursed by the bond holders to NICIL. Out of that amount, as at August 2, 2020, amounts totalling $10.27 billion had been disbursed to GuySuCo. As at December 31, 2020, amounts totalling $11.47 billion had been disbursed to GuySuCo.” He also detailed how much of the bond the PPP Government has serviced so far, including the payment of a whopping $606 million in just interest. According to the Minister, the terms of the bond are locked in so as to prevent early repayment without penalty. The Government therefore has little choice but to continue honouring the bond, which is backed by a Government guarantee.

“This bond was concluded at an exorbitant interest rate of 4.75 per cent, considering it was backed by a Government guarantee and they locked in that interest rate with a penalty clause for early repayment,” Singh explained.

“And given the state in which the sugar industry was inherited after five years of neglect by the APNU/ AFC, our Government has expressed very clearly our commitment to revitalise the industry to support the achievement of a diversified and modern sugar industry.

We have already started to take steps to recapitalise the industry.”

The bond, which was heavily criticised at the time by the then PPP Opposition, was arranged by the Special Purpose Unit of NICIL back in 2018, and was intended to recapitalise GuySuCo and return it to viability after the former APNU/AFC Government had shut down four estates and placed thousands of sugar workers on the breadline.

The idea behind the borrowing of this syndicated bond was to assist the SPU with the reopening of the estates to prove to potential investors that they are viable. However, that plan never came to fruition.

to a No-Confidence Motion (NCM) in December 2018, precipitating a year and half of democratic struggles and delayed elections.

APNU/AFC’s downsizing of the sugar industry resulted in only the Uitvlugt, Blairmont and Albion Estates currently operating. After taking office last year, the PPP/Civic (PPP/C) Government announced in the 2020 Emergency Budget presented in September 2020, that some $5 billion would be injected into the sugar industry for the phased reopening of the closed estates.

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) was allocated a further $2 billion in Budget 2021 by the PPP/C Government for capital works to be undertaken at the various estates to help in the turnaround of the sugar industry.

The PPP/C had promised on the campaign trail to reopen these estates, and within weeks of being in office, had taken steps in this direction. In fact, last September, the Irfaan Aliled Administration had invited Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from investors.

According to the invitation for EoIs, “A joint venture, partnerships, or a leasing arrangement on the now re-opened vested sugar estates at Enmore, Rose Hall and Skeldon, and also on the operational sugar estates at Uitvlugt, Blairmont and Albion…” The notice invited “…interests from the private sector to participate in different forms in the ownership or operations of GuySuCo.” GuySuCo has been eyeing the reopening of Enmore and Rose Hall Estates by 2022. It is expected that the Rose Hall factory will be the first to become operational, while the Skeldon factory will be returned to operation by 2023. The Wales factory will be divested.

With the efforts to revive GuySuCo, the Uitvlugt, Blairmont and Albion estates recorded the highest daily production for 2021, as well as 2020 when it was announced it had produced 710 metric tonnes of sugar on March 11.

National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) interrogated the monies being sought by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government, particularly monies to help the thousands affected by floods, over $21 billion in supplemental funds were approved.

Two financial papers were considered during Monday’s 29th sitting of the 12th Parliament. One paper, for supplementary estimates of current and capital expenditure totalled $1.9 billion, while the other was for current and capital supplementary estimates, totalling $21.3 billion.

The second financial paper included a current sum of $10 billion for the flood relief efforts under the heading of Disaster Preparedness, Response and Management.

Prime Minister, Retired Brigadier General Mark Phillips, who fielded questions from Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon pertaining to the allocation, noted that the Government is being proactive in seeking the funds even while assessments are ongoing.

Child labour – eradicating a global scourge

hild labour is prevalent worldwide, but especially in ThirdWorld countries and countries at war. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) and UNICEF inform that child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – and counting. The two organisations warn that nine million additional children are at risk as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most likely, this is a conservative figure. This is information coming out of Geneva in ILO News of June 10, 2021. This figure is an estimated increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years.

The report points to a significant rise in the number of children – aged 5 to 11 years in child labour, who now account for just over half of the total global figure. The number of children aged 5 to 17 years in hazardous work – defined as work that is likely to harm their health, safety, or morals – has risen by 6.5 million to 79 million since 2016. The ILO-UNICEF 2021 report indicates that 8.2 million children between the ages of 5 and 17 are engaged in child labour in Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The new estimates are a wake-up call. We cannot stand by while a new generation of children is put at risk,” said ILO Director General Guy Ryder. “Inclusive social protection allows families to keep their children in school even in the face of economic hardship. Increased investment in rural development and decent work in agriculture is essential. We are at a pivotal moment and much depends on how we respond. This is a time for renewed commitment and energy, to turn the corner and break the cycle of poverty and child labour.”

The Guyana Government has passed legislation and enacted laws that mandate severe penalties for infringements that could cause harm to children while yet recognising that the Guyanese culture allows children to be involved in family incomegeneration activities, as well as children’s efforts to engage in odd jobs in their spare time, once such activities do not affect their education and/or jeopardise them or their health in any way, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton and Human Services and Social Security Minister, Dr Vindhya Persaud on Friday last called on stakeholders to collaborate to end child labour in Guyana.

The appeal was made during the launch of World Day Against Child Labour, which was themed, “Act Now, End Child Labour.”

Guyana proposes to end child labour by 2025, especially in rural communities where this matter is prevalent, according to Minister Hamilton. He asserted: “We cannot allow the fight against child labour to regress. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge impact on people’s lives and livelihoods. Unfortunately, children are often the first to suffer and this crisis can push vulnerable children into child labour.”

The Government thinks it imperative to prioritise ending child labour and to accelerate the approaches hitherto undertaken to end this scourge. To enable this, the Administration is seeking the involvement of private and public organisations, trade unions, and civil society stakeholders.

Hamilton iterated “Child labour is a complex phenomenon that cuts across policy boundaries and cannot be seen in isolation from the other sectors.

“In addition, it is proposed to promote advocacy to increase awareness of child labour by conducting sensitisation training, pledges, Memoranda of Understanding, media campaigns, and promoting legislative reforms that will help to eliminate child labour in Guyana.” This is a primary necessity to achieving Guyana’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

However, in her remarks on that occasion, Minister Persaud explained the anomalies differentiating acceptable childhood activity and child labour, as defined by UNICEF protocols; she said, inter alia, “… it is good to have children involved in chores at home.

It is good to give them a sense of discipline and responsibility, but from the time it moves to force… exploiting them and putting them in the labour force at a tender age when money is involved … and the deviation becomes a part of the equation, that is when it becomes wrong… It is a crime. It leads to poverty, it leads to deprivation of education, it leads to societal exclusion, it leads to psychological trauma and harm, and it can lead to the worst forms of abuse of children.”

Good intentions cannot eradicate societal scourges, but holistic approaches by global multi-stakeholder endeavours may positively impact the status quo to levels where individual governments can effectively manage their internal affairs

Despite the grand words, this G7 falls devastatingly short on vaccines …the summit was a golden opportunity to avoid countless deaths. History will judge the rich world’s failure harshly

T

he history of international summits is a tale of missed opportunities. When the US and Europe met in Evian in 1938, with the evidence of Nazi antisemitism stunningly clear and the risk of a looming holocaust all too real, they turned their backs on the truth.

In 1990, as the Cold War ended, Germany focused on German unification, France on European unification and the US on holding Nato together – and summit after summit lost sight of the even bigger prize, to unite the world by integrating Russia into the international community.

The financial crisis of 2009 was the opportunity to do more than prevent a recession becoming a depression; but the failure to rebuild the broken international architecture of economic decision-making led directly to the protectionism of “America first”, “China first”, “India first” and “Russia first”.

Now the 2021 G7 will go down in history as another turning point where history failed to turn. Long after this weekend summit is over and the handshakes, photocalls and communiqués fade from memory, it will be remembered only for failing

to honour Boris Johnson’s pre-summit promise to vaccinate the entire world: an unforgivable moral lapse when every three months COVID-19 is destroying one million lives.

At least 11 billion vaccine doses are needed to guarantee all countries the same levels of anti-COVID protection as the West.

Without that worldwide coverage, the disease will continue to spread, mutate and return to threaten even the vaccinated. It is an undeniable fact that all of us will live in fear until no one lives in fear. So providing the vaccines is not just an act of charity: it is a form of self-protection, perhaps the best insurance policy in the world.

But less than one per cent of sub-Saharan Africa has been fully vaccinated.

With a population of 1.3 billion, Africa as a whole has received just 41 million of the 2.5 billion ordered doses. On current trends, says Unicef, it could be 2024 before Western levels of vaccination are reached, if at all.

The gift of one billion doses from the richest countries to the poorest is headline-grabbing and welcome.

But it falls billions of doses short of a solution and does not answer what Johnson called “the greatest challenge of the post-war era”.

We need to do for the world what Britain has done for itself: to construct a virtuous circle, starting with guaranteed G7 funding that underwrites the pooled purchasing of vaccines, which in turn generates new manufacturing capacity on every continent.

In front of the leaders was a comprehensive delivery plan prepared by ACTAccelerator – the respected health coalition – to deliver vaccines through Covax, and a burden-sharing formula, proposed by Norway and South Africa, under which G7 attendees would pay two-thirds of the cost G7 leaders were informed that only half the US$33 billion urgently needed for vaccines testing and protective equipment this year has been raised, with at least the same again needed for 2022. Yet, instead of the G7 paying their share, they offered up about US$7 billion worth of vaccines.

Nor did they solve the immediate emergency. To vaccinate only their most vulnerable 10 per cent, Africa needs 225 million doses now. African cases rose by 25 per cent last week, but Britain was able to offer only five million shots by the end of September, two per cent of the required doses, and, with most of the US vaccines arriving later, mil-

lions of health workers will remain unprotected even as they risk their lives to save lives.

No progress was made either on the demand from 100 poorer countries for the temporary patent waiver that would transfer vaccine technology to them. Just as the G7 left unfilled an embarrassing pre-COP26 hole in climate funds, it stopped short of another big decision: to use US$100 billion of new international money – so-called special drawing rights from the International Monetary Fund’s reserves – to help low-income countries .

Campaigners will now demand that October’s G20 step up where June’s G7 fell short, but if the world’s richest countries sitting round the same table cannot offer more, it is difficult to see how Johnson’s promise to deliver “the single greatest feat in medical history” will be met. It was said of early 20th-century British political leaders that they never missed a chance to let slip an opportunity. As the global death toll mounts – towards four million and beyond – history will judge today’s leaders much more harshly. Vincent Alexander clutching at straws

Dear Editor, Vincent Alexander’s “GWI terminations exemplify duplicitous policies,” dated June 11, 2021, is a classic continuation of the demise of the mind. Alexander has taken ‘death’ to the extreme, and at every level. Let me demonstrate in this short missive.

This man still posits that the Opposition did not lose the Guyana March 2, 2020

elections. He cannot bring himself, against incontrovertible evidence, to admit that the Opposition was engaged in repeated attempts to rig the said elections - and I can go on, but these two cases more than suffice for my argument.

Now let me get to his fallacious reasons for saying that “GWI terminations exemplify duplicitous policies.”

He posits, in a general

way, that “These (170) terminations will impact the lives of far more than 170 persons and exemplify the duplicity of policies that are applied to different constituencies of our society.”

I ask Mr Alexander to read the following: “The manner in which the previous Government went about shutting down four of Guyana’s sugar estates was a bad decision

from any perspective,” said Dr Thomas B Singh, Director of the University of Guyana’s GREEN Institute, who presented this finding of a socio-economic impact study sponsored by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) of the United Nations (UN).

Dear Editor, I have contemplated intensely for quite some time on how to approach such a delicate matter. Apart from a simple Facebook share or two, at the time, I said virtually nothing much relating to the incidents but now I will share my fully developed thoughts. Last month, our nation was shocked by two domestic homicides: Shonnette Dover and Nicola Wilson. Shonnette was allegedly shot dead by her boyfriend, who then buried her in his backyard. Nicola was stabbed to death by her partner who killed himself afterwards.

The outrage was justifiable but it has now practically died down. However, the plague of domestic homicides still affects Guyana.

It seems we keep on evading the real issue at hand when it comes to matters like these. So much so that after details of Shonnette’s boyfriend surfaced, the public’s focus shifted to his sexuality and making jokes about it. It seemed like people just forgot that this man is an alleged murderer and started making a slew of homophobic jokes. I was appalled but not surprised. Afterwards, two Government Ministers spoke out, urging victims to leave the abusive relationships. Now, while I understand and recognise that if we can leave an abusive re-

lationship, we should, it is far more complex than that.

In fact, some may consider those remarks harmful in that we are placing the burden of responsibility on the women to leave and that if they die because they didn’t leave then it’s their fault.

The story of Tiffeney Ageda drives my point home. This is a woman who left the abusive relationship, but her abuser incessantly harassed her leaving her fearful for her life. She said it best when she said “They say you got to leave but it’s never that easy”. We need to start recognising that abusive relationships don’t end with the woman leaving. Abusive relationships end with the abusers stopping the abuse.

Doing otherwise will burden, stigmatise and demonise women even further.

Moreover, we need to have frank and open discussions on how men react and deal with situations.

We need to tear down the notion that violence and aggressiveness is somehow equated to masculinity. That is a load of hogwash. I noted that Shaquan Alleyne (Dover’s boyfriend) had a stillborn career as a rap artist. In his music video he was seen playing with guns and blades and dealing with enemies through violence. One needs to ask how many males in our society see this as “masculine” and

see this as the right way to respond to and resolve disputes. Toxic masculinity is real, and has cultivated negative stereotypes on how men should conform in a society in terms of behaviour patterns. It is time that we as men, start the conversations on how we tear down these oppressive schools of thought and discuss what really constitutes masculinity. And how we should raise our boys to respond and react in situations. Our brothers and sons must know that

we must not cope with rejection through aggression.

We must not solve a dispute with violence and anger. We must not suppress our sexuality or be homophobic to somehow be “masculine”.

It starts with us. I am calling on all of my brothers to shift the tides of society and do the necessary work for us to do better, and for future generations yet unborn.

Then Alexander self-debunked when he stated that “GuySuCo’s workers work in a company that is profit oriented, while the GWI workers work in the service sector that is not profit, but service oriented.” The obvious question then is why did the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) close the Skeldon, Rose Hall, and West Demerara Estates?

Why now is he admitting to the viability of these estates?

Dr Clive Thomas, the coalition’s economic point man was the Chairman of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), even though the then Opposition PPP/C ob-

jected, stating that Thomas was a notorious head, having presided over the failure of the Globe Trust and Investments Company Ltd. Let me state that it is quite normal public policy for countries to subsidise agriculture, including sugar.

For instance, the European Union and the USA subsidise agriculture in the sum of €59 billion and US$22 billion respectively. In India, the annual subsidy on sugar is US$1.7 billion. These countries rightfully view subsidies as investment.

So, by virtue of size, numbers and economic contribution, Vincent Alexander’s opposition to GWI’s laying off of redundant workers falls woefully short and unconvincing. He is clutching at straws, and it is only a matter of time before he becomes self-extinct.

egion One (BarimaWaini) is leading the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign. According to Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony, over 53 per cent of the region’s adult population has been immunised against a severe form of Covid.

He said that this is an indication of the positive impact of sensitisation programmes.

Meanwhile, answering questions from Opposition Members of Parliament during Monday’s sitting of the National Assembly at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) Dr Anthony said that the Guyana Government may not acquire COVID-19 vaccines from US manufacturers Pfizer and Moderna until 2022.

“We have also had discussions with Moderna to try to source vaccines for Guyana.... we got a similar answer. And therefore, we would not be able to get Moderna until 2022,” he added.

V vaccines from Russia, Sinopharm vaccines from China, and AstraZeneca vaccines from India.

The country also recently made a down payment for 150,000 doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which are yet to arrive.

The Health Minister also updated the National Assembly on the progress of the national immunisation campaign.

The regional figures are as follows: Region One (Barima-Waini) – first doses have been administered to 9684 persons; the total target for this region is 18,016 persons.

Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) – first doses have been administered to 12,817 persons; the total target for this region is 30,505 persons.

Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) – first doses have been administered to 31,495 persons; the total target for this region is 70,245 persons.

Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) – first doses have been given to 95,802 persons; the total target for this region is 203,046 individuals.

Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) – first doses have been given to 15,767 persons; the total target for this region is 32,474 persons.

Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) – 37,842 persons have already received their first dose; the total target for this region is 71,459 persons.

Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) – a total of 5279 persons have received their first doses; the total target for this region is 11,976 persons.

Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) – first doses were given to 2061 persons; the total target for this region is 7220 persons.

Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) – first doses have been administered to 6712 persons; the total target for the region is 15,798.

In Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) – first doses have been given to 3538 persons; the total regional target is 26,063 persons.

According to him, a flood plain analysis will be done and the residents relocated to higher grounds. And the Prime Minister reminded the MP that while he has been on the ground in various flood-affected communities, Figueira is yet to visit.

Guyana has been inundated with rainfalls and flooding over the past few weeks that has particularly affected communities in Regions Six, Seven, Eight, Nine and 10. Representatives of the CDC, Health Ministry, Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) have over the past week been conducting flood assessments in several communities in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

An assessment conducted in Sub-District 2, Mahdia, found that several homes, farms, roads and mining equipment have been destroyed by floodwaters. Tumatumari Hill Foot to Two Miles is flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to traverse. Food prices have hiked due to shortages

and access to drinking water is a major concern, with water harvesting being a challenge in hard-to-reach communities.

In addition, in El Paso/ Tumatumari, five households with a total of 21 persons were independently evacuated to the homes of relatives who reside on higher ground. The team also assessed the flood impact at El Paso, which is home to approximately 35 families (160 persons).

This resulted in contamination of drinking water, damage to food, household items, boats and engines among other things. As a result, families were relocated to higher ground. Those who reside on the hills experienced flash floods, but the water has since receded.

“Crack Skull”, “Boyce” on trial for clothes vendor’s murder

elwin Dawson and Kevin Persaud are currently on trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon and 12-member jury for the murder of clothes vendor Purcell Moore.

Upon their indictment, Dawson, called “Crack Skull”, and Persaud, called “Boyce”, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on

December 20, 2017, in the county of Demerara, they murdered Moore during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

The case for the prosecution is being presented by State Counsels Lisa Cave and Mohamed Ali. Dawson is being represented by Attorneyat-Law Adrian Thompson while Attorney-at-Law Damien DaSilva is appearing for the other murder accused.

Moore, a father of two, was shot dead at Old Road, Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) by three men who relieved him of his gold chain.

The shooting incident occurred mere minutes after the 42-year-old left his parents’ house at Old Road. At the time of his demise, Moore had arrived in Guyana two weeks prior from French Guiana.

Moore’s father, Purcell Moore Sr, was among the witnesses called by the prosecution.

The elder Moore told the court that on the day in question, his son left home to go to the “cross street” to purchase bananas. According to him, sometime after, he heard two explosions that seemed to be gunshots.

“I ran out of the house to the cross street where the sounds were coming from. I

run to the scene where I saw my son lying in a drain with mud and water. I scrambled him and examined him, and found that he was bleeding from two wounds. I called for a taxi immediately and placed him in the rear of the taxi along with his mother and myself, and escorted him to the Diamond Hospital.”

ed that Mohamed and the 15-year-old girl are known to each other. At that time, he operated a school bus and would transport the teenager to and from school. In September 2014, Mohamed picked up the girl from school, transported her to a dark, bushy area, and raped her.

The court heard that Mohamed threatened to kill himself and the young girl if she told anyone about what had happened between them.

Again, in January 2015, Mohamed picked up the girl from lessons, took her to the same location, and raped her.

The following month, the girl’s elder brother started to pick her up from lessons.

This continued until she finished school.

Mohamed got ahold of her phone number and began harassing her. Three years later, in February 2018, he went to her home while her mother was out and gave her a letter.

He then threatened her that he would kill her if she disclosed the contents of the letter. The girl later confided in her brother, and the matter was reported to the Police.

Following the guilty verdicts, Mohamed was remanded to prison pending sentencing on July 2, 2021. (G1)

3 die in horrific West Berbice accident …as baby crawls out of wrecked car

hree persons are now dead while several others, including a six-month-old baby, are hospitalised after a speeding car turned turtle in a horrific smash-up at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), on Monday morning.

Dead are as Carlos Edwards, 23, of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, the driver of the car, HC 6077; Hookumchand Parmanand, 61, a former Sergeant in the Guyana Police Force and of the USA and 36-year-old Shabana Latif of Brothers Village, East Bank Berbice.

Those listed as injured are 57-year-old Lakeram Mangal, 27-year-old Joycelyn Cole, and a sixmonth-old baby girl.

Reports are that the car, which was at the time transporting passengers from New Amsterdam to Georgetown, slammed into the fence at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) office at Fort Wellington. As a result of the impact, the gate was completely broken off, causing the car to slam into a utility pole According to the Police,

around to render assistance only to discover that it was his son.

However, the Commander, who was one of the first to arrive on the scene, noted that that the baby crawled out of the vehicle and was heading for the drain when the Police arrived.

She noted that when she

got to the vehicle, the passengers were pinned and unconscious except for Cole, who managed to get out of the wreckage without much assistance.

She was first taken to the hospital, which is four buildings away.

The Commander referred to her as being in a semi-conscious state when she got out of the vehicle.

She said they had to seek assistance from the Onverwagt Fire Department to cut open the vehicle to get persons out.

The entire process took close to one hour even as public-spirited citizens aided in the process.

Meanwhile, there have been five fatal accidents in Region Five for the year so far, resulting in seven deaths as against two deaths from two accidents for the corresponding period last year.

4 more COVID-19 deaths, 60 new cases …over 220,000 persons receive 1st dose vaccine

our more fatalities were recorded as a result of the novel coronavirus, alarmingly adding to the country’s current death toll of 430.

The latest fatalities are a 39-year-old man from Region 10, a 54-year-old man from Region Six, a 76-year-old woman from Region Four, and a 78-year-old man from Region Six. They died while receiving treatment, marking 32 persons to succumb for the month of June.

Monday’s dashboard showed an increase of 60 new cases in one day. The total confirmed cases in the country have now increased to 18,446. There are 21 patients in the Intensive Care Unit, 120 in institutional isolation, 1562 in home isolation – a total of 1703 active cases. No one is being monitored in institutional quarantine.

Some 16,313 of the 9048 males and 9398 females that tested positive have since recovered. Guyana has tested 169,995 persons since the virus was detected here.

Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony on Monday

announced that over 220,000 persons have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines in Guyana. This comes through several avenues to get people immunised, including recent vaccine drive-thru events that were dubbed a success.

During the latest COVID-19 update, it was indicated that first doses have already covered 220,997 persons or 45.4 per cent of the adult population. Second doses are at 87,919 persons or 18.1 per cent of the eligible category.

Floods, challenges

The Health Minister shared that with recent flooding, there were challenges in reaching every region. Nevertheless, these activities will be continuing in other areas in the meanwhile.

This weekend, vaccination drive-thru events at the Guyana National Stadium and the MovieTowne Mall were a success, with just over 2700 people receiving both first and second doses.

Dr Anthony said other locations are being considered to expand this initiative.

“In summary, we had quite a bit of success with this type of exercise where people are driving through and getting their vaccines.

A lot of people would have commented on the efficiency

by the way they were able to come and get their vaccines quickly. I think a lot of people enjoyed that. We are going to examine and continue to do a number of exercises.

We will be consulting with communities to see where we can ideally place them,” he outlined.

Regional statistics as of Monday showed 53.8 per cent immunisation in Region One, 42 per cent in Region Two, 44.8 per cent in Region Three, 47.2 per cent in Region Four, 48.6 per cent in Region Five, 53 per cent in Region Six, 44.1 per cent in Region Seven, 28.5 per cent in Region Eight, 42.5 per cent in Region Nine and 13.6 per cent in Region 10.

During the briefing, persons eligible to donate blood were asked to come forward and do so, in order to replenish the country’s supply.

The Health Minister noted that while they would collect some 12,000 units every year, last year’s figures were less due to the ongoing pandemic.

“I just want to encourage everyone who is healthy enough to come out and donate blood. As you know, blood can save lives of people and we want to have adequate amount of blood at our blood bank so that those who require it will have access to it.” (G12)

Police will determine course of action on student’s suicide – Ministry …tells adults to be mindful of the “blame game”

T

he Human Services and Social Security Ministry and the Childcare and Protection Agency (CC&PA) has indicated that the Guyana Police Force will be the entity deciding the way forward in relation to the course of action following the investigation of the suicide of a St Stanislaus College student.

The 15-year-old committed suicide earlier this month after an incident at her school. This sparked an investigation by the Education Ministry along with the Human Services and Social Security Ministry and CC&PA. Education Minister Priya Manickchand has since met with the parents of the child who live in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara).

On Monday, the Human Services and Social Security Ministry said that the death of the teen is unfortunate

and that it must be investigated by the relevant authorities. It added that the Ministry and CC&PA initiated an investigation in collaboration with the Police.

“The CC&PA will share all its findings with the GPF, which has to give the definitive pronouncement on the cause of death and investigation. Suicide is not the way out. It is an unfortunate choice that some resort to, to escape situations/emotions they cannot handle. People who commit suicide should not be judged, as this act is a deep cry for help and may be seen by them as their only way out,” it said.

The Ministry said that the loss is especially hard on the survivors who often question the signs they missed or how they could have prevented it from happening.

The CC&PA has concluded its investigation after speaking with school staff, students and parents. From

reports, there was an issue at the school involving the child that required special skills and guidance to deal with the matter. The persons at the school, at the time, apparently tried their best that they knew in the situation.

CC&PA Director Ann Greene also met with the parents of the child, had an in-depth discussion with them and offered CC&PA and the Ministry’s support as they face this difficult loss.

Cognisant that the survivors (family members, classmates and friends) may be experiencing an overwhelming number of complicated emotions, and need support and encouragement, the Human Services Ministry and CC&PA have committed to providing the emotional support and intense counselling required by the survivors.

“There are many factors that can influence a person’s

decision to commit suicide, and we are encouraging all involved to be mindful of the ‘blame game’, since this would not change what has occurred and has the potential to fuel further damage.

This is a life gone too soon, and understandably, the survivors (her loved ones, fellow students and teachers) are dealing with the trauma of such a loss. What is needed now is compassion for the survivors,” the statement from the Ministry read.

It also added that there is a clear need for more trained counsellors to be readily available to students.

The CC&PA has since conducted a full Zoom session with the children of the city school and has invited them to do one-on-one, in-person counselling sessions with the agency.

During a previous meeting with the student, Green encouraged the children that

should they too come across difficult situations in life, using a permanent solution for a temporary problem is never the way to go.

Immediately following the meeting, one student visited the CC&PA and benefitted from a one-on-one session. Greene promised the students that she will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine what really led to the teenage girl ending her life.

hree men are now nursing chop wounds about their bodies while another three were arrested following a brawl during a family function at No 74 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, on Sunday evening.

The injured men are 27-year-old Turesh Persaud, a porter; Sumesh Persaud also called “Son”, 45, and Haresh Persaud, 23, a taxi driver all of No 74 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Based on reports received, on the day in question at about 21:45h, the victims and suspects were at a family function during which an argument broke out among them. This, however, quickly escalated into a scuffle.

According to the Police,

the suspects armed themselves with a cutlass and dealt the victims several lashes about their bodies, resulting in them sustaining chop wounds. The three injured men were taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where they were treated and

sent away.

The matter was reported and the suspects, aged 20, 22 and 23, were contacted, arrested and placed in custody at the Springlands Police Station. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Taxi driver assaults passenger after refusing to take him home

A

taxi driver is now in Police custody and is expected to be slapped with a malicious wounding charge after he reportedly assaulted a passenger whom he refused to take home.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening at about 20:45h at Carmarty Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne).

The injured man has been identified as 24-yearold Ajai Sanserran also called “Nicholas”, a labourer of No 36 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Based on reports received, the now injured man and his friend were at a popular drinking bar consuming alcohol. However, a known taxi driver entered

the establishment and was approached and paid $500

by Sanserran to take him home.

The Police stated that after collecting the money, the taxi driver refused to take the drunken man home and this led to an argument and ultimately a scuffle between them.

The suspect reportedly went into his car, collected a piece of steel and dealt the victim one lash to his head, causing him to receive injuries. He was subsequently taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was treated and admitted a patient. His condition is regarded as stable.

On the other hand, the suspect was arrested and he remains in custody assisting with investigations.

He just pelt it and then shout for me but I didn’t hear he. By the time we come, the whole thing burn down and it almost burn down my house as well…I don’t think he got injured,” the man shared.

Sahadeo shared that his brother has been living on the property with him for decades. In the past, the man said he had asked his

brother to relocate to another section of the yard, fearing the possibility of a fire.

Nevertheless, he lauded the assistance from nearby persons in quelling the fire.

“I always wanted him to come forward but he never want to come out. This publication was told that the brother was taken into custody but Sahadeo contended that it was an accident.

In another incident in the community, a landlord set fire to his property in order for tenants to vacate.

Reports are that the fire was set in a bedroom of the Better Hope, East Coast Demerara house. Police have since said

that the landlord set the fire following a conflict between himself and his tenant.

Enquiries revealed that the landlord served his tenant a lawyer’s letter to remove from the premises to which she failed to comply. Police said that at about 17:00h, the woman and her children were selling food when they observed smoke coming from the house.

According to them, the man was then spotted running from the house into the neighbour’s yard. Persons in the area were successful in preventing the flames from spreading. The Fire Department was also summoned and managed to put out the fire with only minor reported damages.

An eyewitness explained that the man was imbibing prior to the act. He entered the lower flat of the house and reportedly committed the act. He has since been taken into custody pending an investigation. There were no significant losses. (G12)

Six shelters have been established in Region 10 at the Hururu Day Care Centre and Forestry Compound, Kwakwani Primary and Secondary Schools, Mapletown Aroaima (Nursery and Primary Schools) and the Rockstone Primary School. These shelters are providing accommodation for 135 persons.

xxonMobil and its partners are continuing advancing their development of Guyana’s oil and gas industry both on and offshore and according to ExxonMobil’s Country President Alistair Routledge, they have spent over $8 billion with local businesses during the first quarter of 2021.

He made the disclosure on Saturday during the dedication ceremony for the Liza Unity – the country’s second floating, production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO).

“ExxonMobil, and its partners are absolutely committed to responsible development of Guyana’s resource, that means doing it safely, that means doing it for protection of the environment, but it also means ensuring that we build local content in the country…

We’ve made tremendous progress in that respect. To date, over 600 local businesses are supporting the

operation here in Guyana.

We have spent over 85 billion Guyanese dollars with those businesses, since 2015, and in the first quarter of this year alone, we spent $8 billion. So, impressive progress,” he said.

He added that Exxon has also been investing in the institutions that are essential to the development of the future talent of Guyana whether it is the University of Guyana or the technical vocational education institutions.

“We’ve also invested heavily in the Centre for Local Business Development, which has been an absolutely critical tool to ensuring that businesses and local business people and entrepreneurs have the help they need to start in business to understand what it means to work in support of our industry and to prepare them to compete, not just amongst themselves, but to build up a capability that competes

at an international level,” Routledge stated.

He said that it is important that they continue working with the Government to further develop the country’s offshore resources which will enable Guyanese to position themselves to better take advantage of the opportunities.

Liza Unity

The Liza Unity is the country’s second FPSO vessel and has a production target of 220,000 barrels of oil per day and an overall storage volume of up 2 million barrels. That means it is the larger than the Liza Destiny, which was the first FPSO vessel.

The hull for the Liza Unity FPSO was built by Chinese shipyard Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. It is based on SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward programme, and it is the first FPSO in Guyana to incorporate the company’s “design one, build many” approach. The

topside modules were constructed and added to the hull by Keppel at their shipyard in Singapore.

The naming ceremony marks a significant step for the Liza Unity in Singapore before it sets sail for Guyana on its 80-day journey to Guyana. “(The construction of the Liza Unity was) A global effort across many countries across the world.

Thousands of people were involved in the construction of this project, the design and engineering, and the preparation for it to set sail.

Now, we have to remember all the challenges we’ve had in the last almost 18 months since COVID started and this project has been able to maintain its schedule despite all those challenges which is truly remarkable thing. It speaks to the teamwork between the ExxonMobil project team, the SBM team, Keppel and many other companies that have supported this effort

in order to keep the project on schedule,” Routledge explained.

He added that that while the FPSO is the most visible part of the project, they have also been busy drilling wells and laying the subsea infrastructure to ensure they can commence production when Liza Unity gets here.

Godmother

The Liza Unity has been officially dedicated by First Lady of Guyana, Arya Ali, the ship’s “Godmother,” as it prepares to set sail from Singapore for Guyanese waters. The ceremony was held at the Cara Lodge Hotel on Saturday, June 12.

Traditionally, the vessel’s “Godmother” bestows luck and protection over the vessel and crew during its journey.

“This project will materialise in the form of local content growth; meaning more jobs for Guyanese and more opportunities for local

businesses and increased revenues, which, when prudently managed, will certainly help us to achieve many of the aspirational goals which have been outlined by the Government of Guyana,” the First Lady said.

She said that the Liza Unity falls in line with her vision for One Guyana.

“The name of the vessel is most appropriate as it builds on a project already delivering significant benefits to the people of Guyana. The discovery and responsible development of oil and gas resources in Guyana makes me optimistic that our collective efforts to eliminate poverty, reduce economic disparities, and further advance efforts to unite this great nation will bear fruit. It is also my fervent hope that our generation will be properly positioned to continue these efforts and accelerate Guyana’s development.”

Stakeholders meet to explore tourism opportunities in Region 2

fficials from the Tourism Ministry and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) on Monday met with various stakeholders in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) including the Regional Executive Officer (REO), Devanand Ramdatt to explore tourism opportunities in the region.

The meeting was an initiative of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Oneidge Walrond and sought to better understand the tourism and business development needs of the region.

During the engagement, Ramdatt explained that the region has tremendous tourism potential and the administration is already working on infrastructural development in preparation for an influx of tourists.

He also pointed out that the region has been receiving an overwhelming response from the domestic market. It is also targeting international tourists.

He added that apart from the scenic locations and excellent resorts, the region continues to promote the birdwatching and agro-tourism potential of the region.

He made reference to the enhancement of historical sites including the Bush Lot Indian

Monument and the Anna Regina High Bridge.

However, he said a ticketing system should be implemented to access the ferry in order to reduce long hours of delay.

oration among all stakeholders to reach the region’s tourism potential and to ensure greater support for small and micro-enterprises.

He said the intention is to ensure that the region benefits from the resources of the State and residents are aware of the training and financial resources available.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh explained that the Authority has updated its calendar of training for Region Two while noting that it is also developing a tourism circuit for the region.

He added that training, product development, and the creation of new tourism experiences for the Essequibo Coast are key priorities for the GTA. Meanwhile, the team will be meeting with stakeholders from the Essequibo Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECCI) and the Business Committee where they will put forward the recommendation made by the administration.

Dismissed election petition

Nandlall, Forde clash over Appeal Court’s jurisdiction to hear case T he filing of a Notice of Motion by Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC, for the Guyana Court of Appeal to strike out an appeal filed against the dismissal of APNU/AFC election petition #99 attracted strong arguments on Monday. That petition which was filed on September 15, 2020, was dismissed on January 18

by Chief Justice Roxane George, SC, as a result of the petitioners - Brennan Nurse and Monica Thomas’ - failure to effect service on the second-named respondent, former President David Granger within the prescribed time. In the face of an appeal against the Chief Justice’s ruling, the Attorney General moved a motion to have the appeal struck out.

Lacks jurisdiction

During a virtual hearing before Chancellor of the Judiciary Yonette Cummings-Edwards and Justices of Appeal Dawn Gregory and Rishi Persaud, Nandlall urged that the appeal should be struck out as there is no statutory or constitutional jurisdiction to the Court of Appeal to hear an election petition dismissed for procedural impropriety or any other reason not stated in Article 163 (1) of the Constitution of Guyana.

Nandlall said that the decision being appealed arises out of an election petition which has been conferred with a “unique and peculiar” jurisdiction under Article 163. He said that Article 163 constitutes the complete code of how election petitions are to be determined, lists the types of issues that are to be raised

other words, the court never determined the questions which the petition raised to be determined which are the questions raised in Article 163 (1) from which Article 163 (3) says an appeal lies to the Court of Appeal upon the determination of those questions or orders consequential to the determination of those questions.”

As such, Nandlall argued that with those questions having not been deter-

“The election jurisdiction, the reason why it is regarded as peculiar, extraordinary, exclusive, limited, these are the very characteristics that prevent any other rules or any other act or any other legislation to come and be part of the election laws jurisprudence,” the Attorney General noted.

Given the foregoing, he noted that the Chief Justice held that the court has no jurisdiction to proceed to hear and determine the petition if one of those condition’s precedent is not complied with. According to Nandlall, “In this case, the question was service and the court dismissed the petition on those grounds. In

jurisdiction to entertain the matter “would lend to arbitrary and possibly irrational judgements being made by a single Judge of the High Court incapable of having any review…It would be an unfortunate development.” As such, he urged the Appeal Court to take jurisdiction over the matter.

Meanwhile, Forde submitted that the Constitution does not provide in Article 163 an exhaustive jurisdiction conferred on the Court of Appeal in relation to election petition matters. “The very Constitution by virtue of Article 123 which

provides that the Court of Appeal can have jurisdiction additional to Article 163 provides the court with the jurisdiction to receive and determine the appeal filed in this matter.” Forde also said that the Court of Appeal Act under Section 6 (2) provides the right of appeal in relation to a final matter determined by the High Court. According to the Senior Counsel, the election petition was dismissed based on an interlocutory determination and there are no provisions restricting appeals. Apart from the election jurisdiction, Forde, citing case laws, argued that an election petition constitutes a civil matter and as such is of the same character as that in regard to the hearing of appeals passed by ordinary civil courts.

Moreover, Forde pointed out that for the Court of Appeal to rule that it does not have

Petition #99 having been filed on September 15, 2020, should have been served on the former President five days thereafter which would have been September 21, 2020, since the fifth day – September 20, 2020 – was a Sunday. However, in the affidavit of service of Nurse, it was stated that the petition, along with the relevant documents, was only served on Granger on September 25, 2020 – five days outside of the statutorily prescribed period. International Center for Democracy donates over US$10,000 to CDC

he International Center for Democracy (ICD), a New Yorkbased organisation, in collaboration with its partners in the religious community and private organisations has donated US$10,723.92 to the Guyana Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC) bank account to aid Guyanese that are affected by the extensive flooding.

In a statement on Monday, IDC said that it is committed to ensure that democracy prevails in Guyana but also, through its charitable work and contribution, assist the Guyanese people

during these difficult times.

“It is the hope of the ICD that this contribution will help to mitigate some of the suffering Guyanese are facing. The ICD is fully aware that the road to recovery will be challenging but is confident that with God’s help and contributions from local and international organisations, as well as individuals, the Guyanese people will get through this too, as they have always done. We have confidence in the Guyanese spirit,” the ICD said in its statement.

It added that it is continuing to work with other US-

based organisations and private individuals to provide additional aid to Guyana in the coming weeks. Those contributions, it added, will also be sent directly to the CDC.

UG staff donate $1M

Also on Monday, the University of Guyana said that it has begun an internal flood relief drive among staff, which has communicated to the Civil Defence

Commission (CDC) that it will donate $1 million towards relief efforts to aid flood-stricken communities in Guyana.

The money was raised from staff, who authorised the deductions from their June salaries.

Separately, UG has another planned activity for university students, staff, pensioners, and alumni affected by the floods which is managed internally.

The Social Works faculty, the University in a statement said, in a combined effort with the Department of Sociology will contribute food

hampers, water and care packages (specifically focusing on children and elderly) who can be easily reached by UG. It added that the Social Work Unit through the Philanthropy Alumni and Civic Engagement (PACE) stand by ready to provide psycho-social support, and referrals to social services for specialised assistance with socio-economic/mental health needs of those affected.

Additionally, volunteer students are waiting to provide voluntary services where needed, in collaboration with partners such as the CDC.

t is Thursday morning–May 27–and I am COVID-19 positive, hooked up to an oxygen tank and lying on a bed in the tent at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, desperately hoping to live but preparing to die at age 53. I am getting worst based on my oxygen levels, my breathing is laboured, I have a high fever, and I am feeling extremely exhausted, but Dr Suratsingh, God bless him, kept me as comfortable as he could. I could hear him telling another doctor how concerned he was about my worsening condition and that they will need to transfer me to the Couva Hospital.

Hearing this I became very depressed and dejected, I sort of gave up hope and started making peace with God because I really thought by Thursday night into Friday I would have passed away.

I was at death's door. It was my third day at the hospital.

I was brought to the facility by an ambulance on Monday, May 24 paralysed with fear.

Thank the Lord I had taken the AstraZeneca vaccine four weeks earlier. But, had I not taken my first jab of the vaccine, I was told, I would have more than likely be dead.

It is a known fact that even if you take the vaccine, it does not prevent you from getting the virus. However, it can prevent you–as it did for me–from dying. My mind is racing back to Sunday, May 23 at my sister, Francia's home in Arima That Sunday was like any regular Sunday. I was at home and my nephew called and said 'We frying fish and making a peas and rice, come up the road.' Along the way, I stopped and bought ice cream and cake. We had a great Sunday evening filled with old talk and laughter while sitting on her porch, we talked about going on vacation and what we were planning to do. We discussed our plan to go to Disney with my teenaged nephews, but we were waiting for COVID to settle down and the plan was to travel in 2022. We joked and had fun like we usually would. When it was getting close to 5 pm I told them I was heading home.

At 5:05 pm, on my way

back to my home having just passed Trincity Mall I started coughing, the cough was dry but becoming uncomfortable.

When I got home I called my sister and told her how I was feeling, and she told me they were also getting a dry cough.

By 9:30 pm I was experiencing a very high fever and my condition was getting worst, not being able to breathe. I started to become agitated as the hours passed and I was running a very high fever. I started pacing the house, convinced and scared that I had contracted COVID. Monday, May 24 At approximately 2:20 am on Monday, May 24 the feeling is unbearable, I called for the ambulance which arrived around 5 am. I was asked for personal details then taken to Mt Hope. Burning up with fever, I arrived at the hospital where I was wheeled in and placed on a chair while waiting to be interviewed and tested. I was eventually swabbed and told I was COVID positive around 10 am. I was then taken for a chest X-ray and upon my return was placed on a bed in a makeshift plastic tent with plywood flooring where other people had been for God knows how long. I was given a mask and oxygen tank and told someone would come and check my vitals.

At 1 pm I'm lying there soaking up the terrible conditions under a hot plastic tent with evidence of sickness and death all around. I could see them moving the guy next to me because clearly, he was dying.

All this time I'm growing increasingly more tired and exhausted, weaker and having serious difficulty breathing. The doctors, nurses and attendants. meanwhile, were providing yeoman service working in overwhelming conditions trying their utmost to save lives.

Tuesday, May 25 It's Tuesday, May 25 at 2:45 am and this guy is lying opposite to me just staring at me. My first thought was why is this guy staring at me? But he wasn't staring, he was dead.

He was removed from the

bed and someone else immediately replaced him. Later that morning and with my condition now getting worst, I reached out to some family and friends for stuff that I needed and they did not hesitate. I had so much that I could have afforded to give those who seemed abandoned by their families.

Wednesday, May 26

It's now Wednesday, May 26 at noon and by this time I'm so weak and out of breath I could not even go to the toilet, so I had no choice but to urinate in a bottle. Thank God, because I wasn't eating any solids I did not have the urge to do any numbers.

Wednesday night it's raining, the place is partly flooding and we're cold. Two guys, Anthony Anderson and another man who is a police officer kept us upbeat with lots of ole talk since we couldn't sleep.

Thursday, May 27 It's the morning of Thursday, May 27 and my condition is getting worst.

I could hear Dr Suratsingh telling another doctor about my worsening condition.

Filled with consternation, I started preparing myself for the what I felt was coming– death Friday, May 28 Friday, May 28 around 10:30 am I heard my name being called, I raised my hand and two ambulance attendants said 'You're being transferred to Couva Hospital.' Those words began giving me a renewed will to live. I was placed in the ambulance and was on my way.

Ironically, the only part of the journey I remembered was passing the Caroni bridge, I can't recall anything after that, I probably passed out.

I was told that upon my arrival at the Couva Hospital at 11:30 am they took my blood oxygen which was reading 88. Now the average human level is always 95-100 so in hindsight, I could have been partially living dead. The medical staff began treating me with medication through the IV, I was told. By 6:45 pm I awoke not knowing where I was and what had happened.

I realised I was in a room

with three other men, I remember the nurses calling a gentleman by his name, Mr Chung. (He was discharged two days later, on Sunday, May 30 and sent home. I was happy for him.)

Saturday, May 29 On the evening of Saturday, May 29 a WhatsApp message sent to me shattered my world. I was unaware up to that time that my only sibling, my sister, Francia, 58, who also contracted COVID-19 had passed away since Friday, May 28, but family and friends kept that news hidden. That destroyed my confidence and I felt like I did not have any reason to live thereafter. I was shattered.

I called my aunty and she had no choice then but to tell me the truth. I also found out that my brother-in-law, Richard, 58, died from COVID too; they died two to three days apart. They left behind their two teenage sons. Devastated and traumatised by this news, I guess that caused my oxygen levels to drop again.

My sister was a very kind, soft, understanding and overly loving person. I used to be driving my car and just think about my sister and start to smile. My lovely Francia, my love, my life, my everything.

Her husband was equally a nice person. He treated my sister with plenty of love, plenty of adoration, plenty of respect, they were well meshed, well put together as a couple and they were very very devout Catholics. Both Francia and her husband had not gotten their shots as yet.

When you talk about the relationship I had with my sister, in my 53 years I have never loved any human being like I loved my sister and now I know it will be a very big void in my life to fill. We spoke every day, sometimes twice a day and I enjoyed every conversation and especially those special moments we spent bonding on her porch in Arima when I visited.

I am going to hold on to those memories and cherish them.

Francia was my only sibling. I am an orphan now, I have nobody right now.

On Saturday night around ten, still in deep grief over my sister's death, not being able to say my last goodbyes and wondering what is my purpose for continuing to live, two other gentlemen and I were taken for CT scans and returned to our beds.

Sunday, May 30 By the afternoon of Sunday, May 30 the news wasn't too good because it seemed the other two guys did not make it. All the while I kept asking myself, why am I still alive?

Monday, May 31 It's now the morning of Monday, May 31 and Dr Rouse came to take my blood oxygen level, taking blood by injecting my wrist...let me tell you, it's one of the most painful procedures, but I was warned. I was given lots of antibiotics through the IV and lots of other medications/ tablets.

Tuesday, June 1 By the morning of Tuesday, June 1, Dr Ragbir changed my oxygen mask.

Both herself and Dr Rouse are fantastic doctors and the healthcare system are much better for having them.

So it's Tuesday evening and my oxygen levels are now hitting the high 90s but not yet 100, but I was breathing much better.

I

Wednesday, June 2 was examined very

early on the morning of Wednesday, June 2, my oxygen level was now back to 99/100 and Dr Rouse and Dr Ragbir advised that I will be removed from the oxygen. By noon there was talk of me being discharged.

It was great news for me, but I was very sad having to leave especially the three other ladies who were in the room. Although I never saw them because we were all behind blinds, my heart went out to them especially the lady lying opposite to me, because I listened to her husband on the phone the Sunday night and he made me cry when he was begging his wife to get better and come home. He kept telling her that neither he nor the children could live without her. That was very tough to endure. I had to put my hands over my ears so I could not hear what they were saying anymore.

I'm not sure what has happened but I'm hoping God spared her life and she's either getting better or home.

It's Wednesday evening and I have received my official discharge documents from the doctors. A tall attendant is wheeling me out...he asked me my age and I said 53 years and he then jokingly said, 'In your 53 years, big man, I'm sure you were never this happy to see the sun.'

And he was so right.

Along the way, though, we came down to level two and I noticed there were tables in the corridor and I asked him what was all that and he told me not to look, it was then I realised it was dead people.

As we got outside before I departed the facility, he told me that I was the first living person he had brought outside for three days.

Now that I've had the unfortunate experience of having acquired COVID I just want to tell the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to please, please get vaccinated because it's gonna help save your lives.

I'm just so happy to be alive and I will like to thank all my family friends and well-wishers for the continued prayer, support and words of encouragement.

Antigua and Barbuda issues 1st US COVID-19 deaths cross painful official medical cannabis licence 600,000 milestone as country reopens

istory was made on Monday, as the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, through the Medicinal Cannabis Authority (the “MCA” or “Authority”), issued the first official licence for the production of Medical Cannabis.

The Authority is a statutory body created to regulate and issue licenses for the cultivation, manufacture, processing, extraction, import, export, testing, research, distribution, and sale of medicinal cannabis goods.

The first licence was issued to Grow Antigua, a local trifold company that can boast of being the first of its kind in the Cannabis Industry.

GROW (Antigua & Barbuda) Limited is an Antiguan & Barbudan registered vertically integrated ‘seed to sale’ Medical Cannabis Company.

The company is a public/private hybrid operation that includes the government, Rastafari communities, and private enterprise as central Stakeholders.

COVID: Lockdown easing in England delayed to July 19

he final stage of easing lockdown restrictions in England is to be delayed until 19 July.

It means most remaining curbs on social contact will continue beyond 21 June, when they had been due to be lifted.

The limit on wedding guest numbers will be removed but venues will still have to adhere to other rules.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said there would be a review after two weeks and he was “confident” the delay would not need to be longer than four weeks.

However, he told a Downing Street press conference he could not rule out the possibility the date could be pushed back further.

Scientists advising the government had warned of a “significant resurgence” in people needing hospital treatment for Covid-19 if stage four of easing the lockdown went ahead on 21 June.

It comes amid rising cases, driven by the more transmissible Delta variant, which was first identified in India. Johnson said going ahead with stage four on 21 June would mean “a real possibility” of the virus outrunning the vaccines, leading to thousands more deaths which could otherwise have been avoided. The delay would give the NHS “a few more crucial weeks” to get people vaccinated, he said, adding that while the link between infections and hospital admissions had been

“weakened” it had not been “severed”.

“We will monitor the position every day and if, after two weeks, we have concluded that the risk has diminished, then we reserve the

possibility of proceeding to step four and a full opening sooner,” he said.

“At a certain stage, we are going to have to learn to live with the virus and to manage it as best we can,” he added.

Addressing MPs in the Commons later, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the decision not to ease restrictions next week was being made with a “heavy heart” but the government’s four tests for easing restrictions - one of which is that the risks are not fundamentally changed by new variants - had not been met.

He said extra testing facilities and access to vaccines would be rolled out in more areas of the country, while vaccinations would be opened up on Tuesday in England to people aged 23 and 24. (BBC News)

he United States has now lost over 600,000 mothers, fathers, children, siblings and friends to COVID-19, a painful reminder that death, sickness and grief continue even as the country begins to return to something resembling pre-pandemic normal.

A bride forced by the pandemic to have a Zoom wedding is planning a lavish in-person anniversary celebration this summer, but all of the guests must attest they are vaccinated.

A Houston artist, still deep in grief, is working on a collage of images of people who died in her community.

Others crowd theaters and bars, saying it is time to move on.

“There will be no tears not even happy tears,” said Ali Whitman, who will celebrate her first wedding anniversary in August by donning her gown and partying with 240 vaccinated friends and family members in New Hampshire.

COVID-19 nearly killed her mother. She spent her wedding day last year with 13 people in person while an aunt conducted the ceremony via Zoom.

“I would be remiss not to address how awful and how terrible the past year has been, but also the gratitude that I can be in a singular place with all the people in my life who mean so much to me,” said Whitman, 30.

The United States passed 600,000 COVID-19 deaths on Monday, about 15% of the world’s total coronavirus fatalities of around 4 million, a Reuters tally shows.

The rate of severe illness and death has dropped dramatically as more Americans have become vaccinated, creating something of a psychological whiplash that plagues the millions whose lives have been touched by the disease.

Many are eager to emerge from more than a year of sickness and lockdown, yet they still suffer - from grief, lingering symptoms, economic trauma or the isolation of lockdown. “We’ve all lived through this awful time, and all of us have been affected one way or another,” said Erika Stein, who has suffered from migraines, fatigue and cognitive issues since contracting COVID-19 last fall.

Stein, 34, was active and fit, working as a marketing executive and fitness instructor in Virginia outside Washington, D.C., before the initial illness and related syndrome known as long-COVID ravaged her life.

Like many, she has mixed feelings about how quickly cities and states have moved to lift pandemic restrictions and re-open.

“For my family, there is no normal”

In New York, social worker Shyvonne Noboa still cries talking about the disease that ravaged her family, infecting 14 out of 17 relatives and killing her beloved grandfather.

She breaks down when she goes to Target and sees the well-stocked aisles, recalling the pandemic’s depths, when she could not find hand sanitizer to protect her family.

“New York City is going back to quote-unquote ‘normal’ and opening up, but I can assure you that for my family there is no normal,” said Noboa, who lives in Queens, an early epicenter of the U.S. outbreak. She is vaccinated but still wears a mask when she is out, and plans to continue doing so in the near future.

In Houston, artist Joni Zavitsanos started looking up obituaries of people in Southeast Texas who had died in the pandemic’s early days, reading their stories and creating mixed-media memorials displaying their names and photographs.

Around each person she painted a halo using gold leaf,

an homage to the Byzantine art of the Greek Orthodox church she attends.

Zavitsanos has now created about 575 images, and plans to keep going, making as many as she can, each portrait on an eight-byeight-inch piece of wood to be mounted together to form an installation. Her brother and three adult children contracted COVID-19 and recovered. A very close friend nearly died and is still struggling with rehabilitation.

Chris Kocher, who founded the support and advocacy group COVID Survivors for Change, urged sympathy and support for people who are still grieving.

“We’re being given this false choice where you can open up and celebrate, or you need to be locked down in grief,” he said. “Let’s be thankful that people are getting vaccinated, but let’s also acknowledge that going back to normal is not an option for millions of Americans.”

One way to acknowledge the toll that COVID-19 has taken is to incorporate the color yellow into celebrations and gatherings, or display a yellow heart, which for some has become a symbol of those lost to the disease, he said.

The bittersweet mix of grief at the pandemic’s toll with relief brought by its ebb was clear at Chicago’s O’Hare airport on Thursday, where Stephanie Aviles and her family waited for a cousin to arrive from Puerto Rico.

Aviles, 23, lost two close friends to the virus, and her father nearly died. And yet, here she was, greeting family she had not been able to see for 15 months as the pandemic raged. (Reuters)

US House to vote to repeal Iraq war authorisation

he United States House of Representatives will vote later this week to repeal the authorisation of war that Congress gave to former President George W Bush in 2002 enabling the US invasion and occupation of Iraq.

The motion to repeal the Authorization of Use of Military Force (AUMF) in Iraq, coming for the first time with support from President Joe Biden, is expected to be taken up in the House on Thursday, CNN reported. The Biden administration said on Monday that the US “has no ongoing military activities that rely solely on the 2002 AUMF as a domestic legal basis” and its repeal “would likely have minimal impact on current military opera-

tions”.

But the upcoming vote is seen as a start in a larger debate in the US Congress about revising and re-establishing the US legal basis for the deployment of military forces in Iraq and elsewhere in what congressional critics call the “forever wars”.

“The President is committed to working with the Congress to ensure that outdated authorizations for the use of military force are replaced with a narrow and specific framework appropriate to ensure that we can continue to protect Americans from terrorist threats,” the White House said in a statement on Monday supporting the House repeal. However, without a replacement authorisation that address-

es modern-day circumstances in Iraq, repeal of the US law faces scepticism from legislators in the Senate, which also must agree for the House resolution to take effect.

“The 2002 AUMF was largely about Saddam Hussein, it is also clearly used to address terrorist threats in and emanating from Iraq,” said Representative Michael McCaul.

“Unless we hear from our military that the 2002 AUMF no longer serves the purpose of protecting Americans, we should not repeal before replacing,” said McCaul, a Republican.

The issue came to the fore most recently with the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by US forces on Iraqi soil, an act many mem-

bers of Congress viewed as unjustified and reckless. The Trump administration later cited the 2002 Iraq war authorisation as legal justification for the Soleimani hit.

US and NATO troops invaded Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 al-Qaeda attacks and the former Bush administration then pushed for and obtained authorisation from Congress to invade Iraq in a preemptive war to topple Saddam Hussein and prevent Iraq from obtaining weapons of mass destruction. Local leaders told authorities that four boatloads of men arrived last week and threw tear gas canisters at the Maikohipi village, nestled in the Palimiu region in Brazil’s largest and bestknown Indigenous reserve, Yanomami.

The area is home to seven tribal communities flanked by illegal gold mining operations – and the attack on June 5 was just one episode in a recent uptick of violence.

“We don’t have peace,” Junior Hekurari, head of Condisi-YY, a Yanomami health council, told Al Jazeera, explaining that the wave of attacks began after a group of tribesmen created a barrier to stop travel up the river and confiscated one illegal mining group’s diesel and other equipment.

In early June, United Nations human rights experts deplored the violence against the Yanomami and another Brazil Indigenous group, the Munduruku, also reeling from an uptick in violence linked to illegal mining.

“The violence means we

can’t hunt or tend to our crops,” Hekurari said. “All we can think about is protecting the community, the children.”

Cruise ship returns to Barbados days after passengers test positive for COVID

he Celebrity Millennium cruise ship returned to the Bridgetown Port Monday on its second cruise, four days after two passengers on last week’s inaugural cruise since the sector resumed, tested positive for COVID-19.

The two guests who shared a stateroom on the cruise which sailed from St Maarten on June 5, were positive during retesting in Aruba last Thursday.

last week, the cruise line said that all guests aboard the Celebrity Millennium were required to show proof of vaccination and a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departing St Maarten for the seven-day cruise which made port stops at Barbados, Aruba and Curaçao. Routine testing had also reportedly been done at every port throughout the weeklong cruise.

About 500 passengers were on board with more than 95 per cent fully vac-

Trinidad health official warns about increase in MIS-C cases

senior medical official on Monday warned that the recent surge in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases could result in an increase in the cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) in the coming days.

“MIS-C usually comes up about four to six weeks after the adult surge of COVID. So, we have seen our surge in May so we are expecting in late June to early July there might be a possibility of some increased cases,” said Dr Joanne Paul, the Medical Chief of Staff at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre.

She told the Health Ministry news conference that there were currently 40 confirmed cases of the MIS-C in Trinidad and Tobago.

But she told reporters that the health sector is bracing for an increase in the number of cases.

She said in a recent conversation with Dr Ronan Ramroop, a paediatric cardiologist, it was revealed

British Navy delivers supplies to St Vincent he British Government said the Royal Navy has delivered 75 tonnes of crucial aid to Commonwealth citizens in St Vincent and the Grenadines whose lives have been thrown into turmoil by the recent eruptions of La Soufrière volcano.

In a statement on Saturday, the British Government said the Royal Fleet Auxiliary support ship RFA Wave Knight offloaded 139 pallets of emergency assistance in St Vincent and the Grenadines, which has been “badly affected by the unexpected and violent eruptions of La Soufrière in April”.

Maradona death probe: Argentine Prosecutor questions star’s nurse

n Argentinian Prosecutor began hearing evidence on Monday in a case involving seven people accused of contributing to the death of football superstar Diego Maradona.

Maradona’s nighttime caregiver, 37-year-old Ricardo Almiron, arrived just after midday (15:00 GMT) with his lawyer at the San Isidro public prosecutor’s office on the outskirts of the capital Buenos Aires.

Almiron is one of seven people under investigation for manslaughter after a board of experts looking into Maradona’s death found he had received inadequate care and was abandoned to his fate for a “prolonged, agonising period”.

The seven who face questioning were members of Maradona’s medical team.

A medical review panel of 20 physicians said in May that the accused acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner” and

with “criminal purpose”, claiming Maradona was not properly monitored before he died.

Maradona, the revered former Boca Juniors and Napoli star who had alcohol and drug addictions for many years, died on November 25 last year from heart failure, after undergoing brain surgery earlier that month.

Almiron is suspected of lying when he claimed the World Cup-winning captain was sleeping and breathing normally hours before he died. An autopsy revealed Maradona was dying at that time, but did not drink alcohol or take illegal substances in the days before his death.

The investigation was opened following a complaint filed by two of Maradona’s five children against neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, whom they blame for their father’s deteriorating condition after the operation.

il prices ended mostly unchanged on Monday, after hitting their highest levels in more than two years, as growing US crude production and Britain’s delayed COVID-19 reopening dampened expectations for fuel demand growth and tighter supplies.

The market reacted negatively to a US Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecast that shale oil output, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US production, was expected to rise by about 38,000 barrels per day (bpd) in July to about 7.8 million bpd.

“We started off strong on expectations that the demand situation was building momentum as COVID vaccinations were high,” said Phil Flynn, senior analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago. “Then the EIA report took the winds out of the sail.”

Brent settled up 17 cents at US$72.86 a barrel. Earlier in the session, it reached US$73.64 a barrel, its highest since April 2019.

US West Texas Intermediate fell 3 cents to settle at US$70.88 a barrel, after earlier touching US$71.78 a barrel, its highest since October 2018.

The International Energy Agency said on Friday that it expected global demand to return to pre-pandemic levels at the end of 2022, more quickly than previously anticipated.

The IEA urged the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, known as OPEC+, to increase output to meet demand.

OPEC+ has been restraining production to support prices after the pandemic wiped out demand in 2020, maintaining strong compliance with agreed targets in May. Motor vehicle traffic is returning to pre-pandemic levels in North America and much of Europe, and more planes are in the air as anti-coronavirus lockdowns and other restrictions are being eased.

However, Britain late Monday delayed plans to lift most remaining COVID-19 restrictions by a month, because of the rapid spread of the more infectious Delta variant.

Heavy maintenance seasons in Canada and the North Sea also have helped prices, said Rystad Energy analyst Louise Dickson. Putin on successor: Ready to support critic if he is true to Russia

ussian President Vladimir Putin has told US television network NBC that, when asked about plans for a successor, he is ready to support someone who is faithful to the country even if he is critical of the President.

Putin has dominated Russian politics since 2000.

In April he signed a law that could keep him in office in the Kremlin until 2036, when he would be 83, allowing him to run for two more six-year terms once his current stint ends in 2024.

Putin gave an interview to NBC ahead of his first meeting with Joe Biden as US President in Geneva this week, at a time of the worst tensions in the relationship between Russia and the United States since the Cold War era.

“President Biden is funda-

mentally different from (former US President Donald) Trump, because he is a career man, he has spent almost his entire adulthood in politics,” Putin said, according to an interview transcript released by the Kremlin.

“My great hope is that... there wouldn’t be any impulsive moves from the (current) President, that we will stick to certain rules of communication, we will be able to agree on something,” Putin added.

Biden, who called Putin “a killer” in March, said on Sunday some of Russia’s activities contradict international norms. Washington said Russian authorities or Russian hacking groups were behind recent cyber-attacks on companies working in the United States.

Headache and runny nose linked to Delta variant

headache, sore throat and runny nose are now the most commonly reported symptoms linked to COVID infection in the UK, researchers say.

Prof Tim Spector, who runs the Zoe COVID Symptom study, said catching the Delta variant can feel “more like a bad cold” for younger people.

But although they may not feel very ill, they could be contagious and put others at risk.

The classic COVID symptoms people should look out for, the NHS says, are: cough, fever, loss of smell or taste.

But Prof Spector said these are now less common, based on the data the Zoe team has been receiving from thousands of people who have logged their symptoms on an app.

The change appears linked to the rise in the Delta variant, first identified in India and now ac-

counting for 90 per cent of COVID cases in the UK. “People might think they’ve just got some sort of seasonal cold and they still go out to parties and they might spread around to six other people.

“It might just feel like a bad cold or some funny ‘off’ feeling - but do stay at home and do get a test.”

Similarly, the Imperial College London React study of more than a million people in England - when

the Alpha or UK variant was dominant - found a wide range of additional symptoms linked to COVID. Chills, loss of appetite, headache and muscle aches were together most strongly linked with being infected, alongside classic symptoms.

Egypt upholds death penalty for 12 Muslim Brotherhood members

gypt’s highest civilian court on Monday upheld death sentences for 12 Muslim Brotherhood members, concluding a trial linked to a 2013 mass killing by security forces at a sit-in, according to judicial sources.

The ruling, which cannot be appealed against, means the 12 men could face execution pending approval by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. They include Abdul Rahman AlBar, commonly described as the group’s mufti or top religious scholar, Mohamed ElBeltagi, a former Member of Parliament, and Osama Yassin, a former Minister.

The following month, security forces raided the

square and killed some 800 people in a single day.

Authorities said at the time that protesters were armed and the forced dispersal was a vital “counterterrorism” measure.

It marked the start of a long crackdown against opposition in Egypt.

Those condemned to death on Monday were convicted of “arming criminal gangs which attacked residents and resisted policemen as well as possessing firearms … ammunition… and bomb-making material”, the court of cassation said in its ruling.

Other charges include “killing policemen… resisting authorities… and occupation and destruction of public property”, it added.

Police chief and other security officials, newly sworn-in Internal Security Minister Omer Barlev approved the march and said Police were well-prepared, according to a statement carried by Israeli media.

It was not clear whether participants would be allowed to enter the Old City’s Muslim quarter, on a route that Israeli Police had previously barred.

An original march on May 10 was re-routed at the last minute as tensions in Jerusalem led Hamas to fire rockets towards the holy city and Israel responded with air strikes on Gaza. Right-wing Israeli groups accused their Government of caving into Hamas and rescheduled the march after a truce took hold.

NATO warns of military challenge posed by China

ATO leaders meeting for a summit in Brussels have warned of the military threat posed by China, saying its behaviour is a “systemic challenge”.

China, they said, was rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, was “opaque” about its military modernisation and was co-operating militarily with Russia.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned China was “coming closer” to NATO in military and technological

terms.

But he stressed the alliance did not want a new Cold War with China.

NATO is a powerful political and military alliance between 30 European and North American countries. It was established after World War Two in response to the threat of communist expansion.

In recent years, the alliance came under strain as leaders debated its purpose and funding.

Tensions grew during the presidency of Donald Trump, who complained about his country’s financial contributions to the alliance and questioned the US commitment to defend European partners.

It is his successor Joe Biden’s first NATO meeting since taking office, and the new President has sought to reassert American backing for the 72-year-old alliance.

His country, he said, had a “sacred obligation” to observe Article 5 of NATO’s founding

treaty, which commits members to defend each other from attack.

The NATO leaders also agreed to keep Kabul airport running as the US and its allies withdraw troops from Afghanistan.

BA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Nikola Jokic did not expect to be ejected as the Denver Nuggets were swept from the play-offs in a controversial decision that surprised Head Coach Michael Malone and Phoenix Suns counterpart Monty Williams.

Jokic was tossed in the third quarter of Denver’s 125-118 defeat to the second-seeded Suns, who sealed a 4-0 series victory in the Western Conference semi-finals on Sunday.

Crowned MVP on Tuesday, Jokic was assessed a flagrant two foul following a lengthy review after taking a swing at Suns guard Cameron Payne in Game Four.

Jokic became the first MVP swept in a postseason series since Magic Johnson in 1989 and the Serbian star discussed the incident post-game.

“I wanted to change the rhythm

he went over there to take a foul.

hristian Eriksen’s agent said the player was undergoing detailed examinations after the Denmark international collapsed owing to cardiac arrest during his side’s Euro 2020 opening match against Finland on Saturday.

“We all want to understand what happened to him and he wants to as well. The doctors are doing some detailed examinations, it will take time,” Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday cited Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots as saying.

“Christian does not give up. Him and his family want to send everyone their thanks.

“We spoke this morning (Sunday). He was joking around and in good spirits, he was doing well,” he added.

raigg Brathwaite has pushed back on suggestions the absence of batting coach Monty Desai played a role in West Indies’ capitulation in both innings of the opening Test against South Africa.

West Indies were rolled over for 97 in their first innings after choosing to bat first on last Thursday’s opening day at the Daren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia, and were then dismissed for 162 in their second innings on Saturday, the third day, to suffer a heavy innings and 63run defeat inside two and a-half days.

Desai, who was appointed in 2019 when Phil Simmons returned for his second stint as Head Coach, was absent from the build-up to the opening Test, with the West Indies Captain explaining he was still in his native India trying to secure flights to the Caribbean.

“It’s not fair [to say his absence impacted the team’s performance].

The coaches here are doing a very good job,” Brathwaite argued.

“He’s missed, but I wouldn’t say it (the defeat) is because of that. I think the [other] coaches

IBA has received since June 10 through the New York Times and Human Rights Watch several allegations about systemic sexual harassment within the Mali Basketball Federation.

Upon receiving such information, FIBA immediately shared its content with the independent Integrity Officer Professor Richard McLaren who has opened an investigation into the matter. The Integrity Officer has confirmed that the report is expected to be delivered soon after the Olympic Games.

The FIBA Secretary General has notified the National Federation of

Mali to require their full collaboration with the investigation. The following Malian individuals have been suspended from all FIBA activities while the investigation is conducted: coach Amadou Bamba, Coach Oumar Sissoko and official Hario Maiga.

It is alleged that the

FIBA President knew or should have known about the sexual abuses in the Mali Basketball Federation particularly during his time at the helm of that Federation from 1999 until 2007. The FIBA President, who strongly denies the allegations, has taken the decision to temporarily step

aside while the investigation is conducted. He has also offered his full collaboration to the investigation.

In the meantime, as per the FIBA rules, the FIBA First Vice President Sheik Saud Ali Al-Thani will deputise for him. FIBA stresses the President’s right to the presumption of innocence and will make no further comment pending the outcome of the investigation.

FIBA has zero-tolerance for all forms of harassment and abuse and extends its heartfelt compassion for victims of such conduct.

FIBA is committed to ensuring reports of such behaviour are taken seriously and properly investigated.

avid Jackson and Jimrone Mc Pherson emerged champions of the 14th Claude St Romain Memorial Card Twist and Dominoes Games held at David Samaroo Place, Port Kaituma Waterfront, Region One (Barima-Waini) on Sunday.

The Games were held in memory of Claude St Romain (June 6, 1935-June 6, 2007), who served as a Colonel in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and held senior public positions in Region One. He was acknowledged by many as the best dominoes playereducator-mentor of his time.

Ever since the former Dynamic leader died, his son, Conrad St Romain, and family have held the Memorial Games, at David Samaroo Place. PreCOVID-19, the games were played over two days because numerous players would travel from Moruca, Mabaruma and Matarkai Sub-Region to participate in an entry-free contest, where lots of cash prizes were up for grabs.

According to Conrad, owing to COVID-19, only a limited number of players were

registered for the Games. He noted that the very best card and domino players can get eliminated while lucky players emerge winners.

This year, $350,000 were up for grabs in the Card Twister game, and Jackson, Rayborn Mc Donald and Quincy Frazer each pocketed $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 respectively. In the dominoes competition Mc Pherson pocketed $100,000 while Kevin Wilson and Roger Boston carted off $50,000 and $25,000 respectively.

Conrad stated that he was extremely happy with the successful completion of the Games and hope to reintroduce field games in the future.

He encouraged all sportsmen and women to consider taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

GCF to host qualifying tournament for FIDE Cadets & Youth Tournament

uyana’s top junior chess players will hit the boards once again this weekend, but this time around the stakes will be higher, as they compete for a spot in an international tournament.

The qualifying tournament is slated for Saturday, June 19 at 14:00h (2 pm) and will be contested virtually on the Tornelo Platform. the children will be playing for an opportunity to represent Guyana at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Cadets and Youth Rapid World Cup Online.

The players will be competing in five categories,

namely: Under-18, U-16, U-14, U-12 and U-10.

According to the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), it is expecting to send 30 representatives to this international tournament.

The Federation added that the preparation of some players has been ongoing with training under the guidance of International Master Atanu Lahiri over the past nine months.

he Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) over the weekend made its way to Berbice, as it continues its efforts in the “Shuttle Time Project” initiative.

The Shuttle Time Project, which is a global one introduced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is geared at the younger crop of players, specifically schoolaged players.

The rationale behind the initiative is to get students involved in the sport, while incorporating the sport into the respective curriculum in an effort to develop badminton across countries.

Continuing with the programme, which was first

launched back in 2017, the GBA (which spearheads the initiative) travelled to Berbice, meeting with students from the Berbice High School and the Multilateral Secondary School.

During the visit, the Shuttle Time Project was carried out by Guyana’s top three in badminton, Narayan and Priyanna Ramdhani and Akili Haynes, who have represented Guyana on the regional and international stage.

Aside from the GBA’s presentation of the Shuttle Time Kits, which consists of rackets, shuttlecocks and nets, the Ramdhani siblings took it upon themselves to make a personal donation of

11 rackets to potential players. The equipment is expected to keep the schools active in the sport.

Following the engagement, the GBA extended gratitude to the Headmistress of Berbice High School, Coleen Liddell and the Head of Allied Arts, Ceon Bristol of the New Amsterdam Multilateral School along with the Physical Education (PE) teachers for arranging the large turnout of students for the “Shuttle Time Project” at their respective schools.

The next stop for the GBA will be the mining town of Linden next weekend, as they further extend the “Shuttle Time Project”.

Despite the pandemic, the GTTA has continued to do work in schools

Munroe expounded on the possibility of table tennis activities being restarted, along with local tournaments. He relayed that tournaments was a key area the GTTA wished to have restarted since they formed a crucial element of the athletes’ training and technical and tactical development and was essential to mitigating against the loss of players or players’ interest.

“We have written the National COVID Task Force (NCTF) seeking their approval and blessings in view of proceeding with non-spectator engagement, single elimination-type competition which simulates our normal training engage-

enforcement and would only allow limited number of persons at the venue at any one time and follow the NCTF COVID-19 Guidelines and the ITTF COVID-19 guidelines,” Munroe outlined.

He noted that the protocol the Association has set out allowed the draws to be made well in advance, the system of play schedule and times of play to be developed and advertised; and for players to be at the venue only when matches are scheduled. It also mandates the use of two tables and the marking of balls which each player would use, sanitisation of venues and surroundings, the wearing of masks for all officials and

players with the exception for players competing, thermometer checks, hand sinks and live streaming, which would eliminate having spectators in attendance.

Also in place would be virtual meetings to apprise the systems in place and penalties for infringement or violations of the established codes and guidelines.

“The safety of our fraternity is of primary and paramount importance. We understand the Task Force’s concerns given the increased number of cases, we have been navigating this since the gazette order would have allowed training and were able to have our national team members training in preparation for the Olympic trials in Argentina.

We think and believe that our proposal will be favourably considered since as outlined we wouldn’t wish to risk any player or official being infected as we venture out,” Munroe added.

He revealed that the GTTA has had feedback through Captain Williams of the NCTF and Director Hussain, who are currently studying the Association’s proposal and have queried a few aspects. Munroe explained that the team would be shortly engaging the GTTA on its approach moving forward.
