Odour-control measures underway as Eccles landfill nears complete sealing L

ocal Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand have announced that only a small section of the Eccles Haags Bosch Landfill remains uncovered and is expected to be fully sealed within the next two days, as the Government moves to permanently address odour concerns affecting nearby communities. The Minister said that in addition to covering the remaining area, rehabilitation and beautification works have already begun on sections of the landfill that are closed.

“Additionally, the cell that is closed, we’re planting grass, and we hope to have it beautified in such a way that you can come and have picnics, play golf, or do something else on it,” Manickchand stated. She explained that the measures form part of efforts to manage solid waste in a way that does not pollute the atmosphere, create unpleasant living conditions or leave surrounding areas unsightly.

Manickchand noted that the odour issue arose because a large

portion of the landfill had been left uncovered, allowing gases from decomposing waste to escape freely into the air. She stressed that this situation was unacceptable and ran counter to the Government’s vision for modern, livable communities. “We want communities that are safe, clean and family-friendly – places where people can enjoy their yards, barbecue, plant vegetables and relax after a hard day’s work,” the she said, referencing President Dr Irfaan Ali’s clear policy direction. To resolve the issue quickly, Manickchand said the Ministry stepped in directly, despite the landfill being managed by contractors under a formal agreement. She explained that the State had a responsibility to act immediately while ensuring contractors comply with their contractual obligations going forward. Works carried out included creating access roads to allow cover material – much of it sourced from daily drain-cleaning operations – to be deposited closer to uncovered areas, enabling heavy equipment to spread and seal the waste

efficiently. She noted that while rainy conditions can slow the process, favourable weather and improved access allowed the team to significantly reduce the odour in a short period. She further disclosed that similar landfill development and management standards are being implemented across Regions One (BarimaWaini); Two, Three, Five,

Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, and Ten, with contractors required to meet strict environmental and operational requirements.

Must be managed responsibly

Manickchand emphasised that landfills must be managed responsibly, noting that they cannot be located too far from residential or industrial areas due

to logistical realities. “We have to manage our solid waste in a way that protects the environment, keeps communities comfortable, and ensures these spaces are visually acceptable for everyone who passes through,” she said. Civil engineer Lloyd Stanton, who was on site with the Minister, explained that foul odours emanating from the landfill were largely the result of a significantly uncovered section of waste, which allowed gases from decomposing garbage to escape freely and spread over long distances. According to Stanton, garbage produces odours in two main phases. When waste is first dumped, it emits a “fresh waste” smell, which typically does not travel beyond 400 to 500 feet from the dumping area. However, stronger and more persistent odours occur later, as the waste begins to decompose and release gases during and after the fermentation process. The problem worsened because a large area of the landfill was left uncovered. The larger the exposed surface, the more gases are emitted.

Under proper conditions, these gases should be released through a small, controlled vent, allowing them to be quickly diluted once they enter the atmosphere.

When the landfill remains uncovered, gases escape through cracks and crevices across the entire area, making dilution more difficult and allowing the smell to travel farther. Weather conditions also played a major role in how far the odour spread. During evenings, at night, and throughout the rainy season—when humidity is high—the gases tend to stay closer to the ground, causing the smell to travel longer distances. In contrast, during hot and dry conditions, rising warm air carries the gases upward, where they mix with atmospheric air and become diluted, reducing the intensity and reach of the odour.

As a result, residents experienced the worst landfill smells primarily during rainy periods and at night, when cooler air prevented gases from dispersing upward – an issue directly linked to the uncovered sections of the landfill.

he Commonwealth Observer mission who was in Guyana for the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections has found no evidence to substantiate Opposition claims that a “bloated” voters’ list was used to manipulate the outcome of the poll. In its final report on the electoral process, the Commonwealth Observer mission, in addressing one of the most persistent narratives raised throughout the election cycle by the opposition parties, the observers stated unequivocally that no proof has emerged to suggest that the size of the Official List of Electors (OLE) was leveraged for electoral manipulation. “No evidence of leveraging voter roll inflation for electoral manipulation has been substantiated to date,”

Court rulings have further restricted the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) from removing voters from the list solely on the basis of non-residency, effectively preserving the names of overseas citizens on the OLE. “These legal safeguards limit the degree to which GECOM can remove names from the list through other pathways,” the report stated. The Commonwealth observers confirmed that records from the Registrar of Births and Deaths were shared with GECOM, allowing for the removal of deceased persons from the voters’ list. However, they noted that additional mechanisms remain incomplete.

Although legislation exists to allow death reports

from the Commissioner of Police and the Chief Medical Officer to be used to identify deceased voters, the operational framework to activate this process has not yet been finalised. As a result, the Commission’s ability to further refine the list remains legally constrained.

Biometrics in future elections

Looking ahead, the Commonwealth observer group recommended renewed consideration of biometric voter registration and verification early in the next election cycle.

Negligence & the cost of disrupting essential services

T

he power outage that disrupted communities in Eccles and Ruimveldt on Monday afternoon was a failure quickly resolved by the Guyana Power and Light Inc, but also it was a reminder of a persistent and costly problem: the careless damage of public infrastructure by contractors who operate without adequate safeguards, accountability, or respect for the consequences of their actions.

Electricity is an essential service that underpins daily life, commerce, health care, education, and public safety. When power is interrupted, even for a relatively short period, the ripple effects are immediate and tangible. Businesses lose revenue, perishable goods are put at risk, electronic systems shut down, and households are forced to put routines on hold. In communities where small enterprises rely on consistent electricity to survive, such disruptions can mean the difference between meeting daily expenses and operating at a loss.

In this instance, the outage was caused when a contractor’s equipment came into contact with a high-voltage line, rupturing it. Compounding the initial damage was the decision to leave the scene without alerting the power utility. That action delayed critical information from reaching those responsible for safeguarding the grid and restoring service, and it reflects a troubling disregard for public responsibility. While the technical team acted swiftly once informed, speed of response does not erase the inconvenience suffered by residents and businesses during the outage.

This incident cannot be treated as an isolated lapse. Across the country, public utilities repeatedly report damage to power lines, water mains, roads, and telecommunications infrastructure caused by construction and excavation activities. Each occurrence carries a financial cost that is ultimately borne by the public, either through service disruptions, repair expenses, or lost productivity. When such damage is met with little consequence, it creates an environment where negligence becomes normalised rather than deterred.

Accountability must therefore be the central issue and contractors operating near public infrastructure have a duty to conduct proper site assessments, adhere to safety protocols, and coordinate with utility providers before and during works. These responsibilities are not optional but should be fundamental to professional practice.

Failure to meet them should attract clear and enforceable penalties, including fines, liability for repair costs, and, where appropriate, suspension of operating licences.

The involvement of law enforcement, as directed by the ministry, signals an important shift towards treating such incidents with the seriousness they deserve. Damage to critical infrastructure is an act with economic and social consequences. Enforcement mechanisms must be strengthened to ensure that contractors understand that negligence will not be quietly absorbed by utilities or communities.

Beyond enforcement, there is a need for a broader cultural change within the construction and contracting sector. Rapid development and infrastructure expansion cannot come at the expense of basic standards of care. Growth that undermines existing services ultimately weakens public confidence and strains state resources.

Regulatory agencies, utilities, and contractors must work together to establish clearer communication channels, mandatory notification systems, and stricter monitoring of works near sensitive installations.

Public utilities themselves are not without responsibility.

Continuous public education, clearer marking of infrastructure, and proactive engagement with developers can reduce the risk of accidental damage. However, these measures cannot substitute for individual and corporate responsibility. When warnings are issued and guidelines are available, the onus rests squarely on those undertaking the work to comply.

The inconvenience suffered by residents and businesses in Eccles and Ruimveldt deserves recognition not only in words but in corrective action. Swift restoration of power addresses the immediate problem, but preventing recurrence requires firm follow-through. Each incident should be thoroughly investigated, costs transparently assessed, and consequences consistently applied. Selective enforcement or quiet settlements only perpetuate the cycle.

Ultimately, the protection of public property is a shared obligation, but enforcement must be uncompromising. Contractors who damage infrastructure through carelessness must be held fully accountable, not as a matter of punishment alone, but as a necessary safeguard for national development.

Christmas is a season for forgiveness.

But is saying ‘sorry’ enough?

I

t’s a strange season to talk about forgiveness.

While streets glow with fairy lights and shop windows promise that compassion is only a gift-box away, Germany is once again confronted with the unresolved wounds of its recent past.

The trap of the season is this: believing that every gesture of regret must be met with mercy. As if forgiveness was a resource available to anyone who is reasonable enough to move on, no matter how atrociously they have been treated.

It is certainly not that simple for the families of the victims of the National Socialist Underground (NSU). During the 2000s, the neo-Nazi terror organisation killed 10 people, nine of them immigrants, mostly small business owners, and one Policewoman. Because investigators focused on probing the victims’ families and communities rather than on Nazis, the NSU was able to continue murdering without interference. German media reported on the atrocities as die Dönermorde the kebab murders, as if it was some exotic true-crime phenomenon.

In 2011, when the NSU outed itself in a video in which it claimed responsibility for the murders and several nailbomb attacks, it also exposed profound structural failures in the German state’s approach to rightwing terrorism.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that security agen-

cies had informants in close proximity to the perpetrators, overlooked relevant intelligence, and in some cases destroyed files after the group was uncovered. As a result, the NSU case has come to be understood not only as a sequence of racist murders but as an indictment of the state’s inability – or unwillingness – to adequately recognise and confront far-right violence.

Now, in ongoing proceedings surrounding the NSU, Beate Zschäpe – sentenced to life in 2018 for her role within the NSU core cell responsible for 10 murders – recently appeared in court as a witness in a related trial.

But this time, Zschäpe took on a markedly different tone than she had before – one of remorse, or at least something that resembled it. She spoke of shame, of reconsideration, of recognition of her own guilt, which she claims only started during her own trial, ending in 2018.

Back then, Zschäpe denied any involvement in the murders, and her cooperation with authorities was extremely limited. A full investigation of the murders would only have been possible with Zschäpe’s truthful testimony, since her two co-members, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Börnhardt, had killed themselves in 2011 to evade arrest.

Zschäpe had gone into hiding with the two men and had lived with them under false identities in various German cities for more than a decade. In court, she stayed silent for years.

Then, in written testimony running to 53 pages, she managed to not answer any of the 300 questions asked by the victims’ relatives, who appeared in court as co-plaintiffs. Instead, Zschäpe claimed never to have been informed in advance about the murders and bomb attacks committed by her two partners, saying she had found out about them only afterwards.

Now, the 50-year-old Zschäpe has appeared in court and spoken of how “ashamed” she is. Inevitably, one has to wonder whether this shift is really a moral transformation or a more pragmatic pivot made in the hope of improving her situation in prison. Last summer, she was admitted to a neo-Nazi exit programme, prompting alarm among the victims’ relatives, since this could increase the chances of her early release. In 2026, Zschäpe will have served 15 years in prison, which is the minimum for a life sentence. Because of the gravity of the crimes, she will not be released next year, but the court must set a so-called minimum for her remaining term of imprisonment. Her participation in the exit programme and her public display of contrition may have an impact on the court’s decision.

“There is no excuse for the murders. I will never be able to make it right,” Zschäpe said in court earlier this month. Gamze Kubasik, whose father Mehmet Kubasik was shot in the head by the NSU in 2006 in

his own kiosk, was also in court that day and shouted: “Then tell us the truth!”

Zschäpe responded with a silent look at Kubasik.

And this silence gives more answers than all the vague words of remorse and guilt Zschäpe is now using in court. For the performance of remorse has a tradition in Germany. It fits a country that has confronted its crimes historically – or at least likes to tell itself that story. As a nation it has learned that a good mix of contrition and silence can pave the way back to social acceptance. The desire for atonement is not inherently wrong. But it becomes problematic when it is treated as a shortcut: when forgiveness is expected, although no believable effort has been made to earn it. If Zschäpe’s efforts to distance herself from the neo-Nazi ideology were sincere, she would have helped to clarify the circumstances of the murders. She can still share information, which many families are begging for, in order to understand what happened to their loved ones.

But Zschäpe chooses silence.

She doesn’t show by her actions that she has become a different person, she just tries to sound like one. And maybe that’s the thing with forgiveness: you don’t have to forgive somebody just because they ask for it – they have to earn it as well. Chinese national killed during robbery in Berbice

Chinese national was on Monday morning killed during a robbery at his home and place of business at Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). Dead is 61-year-old Chen Yongping, while his 32-year-old son Chen Dongrong was injured. The man and his son were attacked with knives by two armed bandits just after arriving at their business place. According to the police, the men had gone to the Port Mourant Market and returned at about

05:00h in a bus, and as they drove into their yard, they were pounced upon by the bandits. They were robbed of cash and their cellphones. They subsequently made good their escape on foot. The police were alerted, and both men were taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where the father succumbed to stab wounds while receiving treatment.

Guyana Times understands that the men had gone to the market to purchase cassava, and as they were unloading it, they were attacked.

Both men were robbed of their cell phones during the attack; one valued at $322,000 and the other at $342,000.00. Additionally, $150,000 was taken from the son and an unknown amount of money from his father. This publication understands that neither of the two young bandits was masked and both carried knives. Meanwhile, Dongrong has since been discharged from the New Amsterdam Hospital. At least four persons were taken into custody as police continue to probe.

Police called in as contractor leaves scene after damaging GPL’s high-voltage line …as 2-hour power outage hits Eccles, Ruimveldt

R

esidents and businesses in the Eccles and Ruimveldt areas experienced a temporary power outage on Monday afternoon after a high-voltage line was damaged by a contractor’s equipment.

According to a statement from the Public Utilities and Aviation Ministry, the incident occurred at 16:46h when a machine operated by Moore and Son Establishment, working on Caneview Avenue near a new hotel, came into contact with the line, causing it to rupture. The contractor reportedly left the scene without notifying the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).

GPL responded quickly, dispatching a technical team

to restore power, which was re-established by 18:01h.

The Ministry in a statement condemned the contractor’s actions, describing them as careless and highlighting the risks posed when equipment comes into contact with GPL infrastructure.

The Ministry said it has instructed GPL to involve the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the matter, citing the costs, inconvenience to customers and potential revenue losses caused by such incidents. The Ministry has issued a warning to all contractors operating near GPL’s network to exercise caution and responsibility, noting that failure to comply could lead to punitive measures.

n keeping with the Government’s mandate to modernise the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Top Cop Clifton Hicken has announced that the force will be fully electronic by the end of January 2026.

The Police Commissioner was at the time speaking at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Annual Award Ceremony at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary, Georgetown. “Next year, we are going electronic. Everything will be done electronically for us, and so the constables will be taking statements via computer. We will have all the links. We are going to have a computer-driven force, and so we are going to get rid of all the paper... we’ve already forecasted it to integrate members of the police force so they can understand the computers. We had to have other branches outside to create this type of input,” Hicken added. He stated that in order to assist those ranks who are not computer literate, the GPF is partnering with ZARA to offer the necessary training. “We are partnering with ZARA across all the regions...and so, for the constables, the corporals and the sergeants, if you’re not computer literate, go to ZARA, and it’s free of cost. Get yourself equipped, get yourself organised, because after the first month of next year, you’re going to see computers being set up and you are required to use that computer to do the people’s work.”

The top cop added that it will also help to retrieve information with the click of a button. What we will take three days to find, a click of a button, and the information will become available.”

In addition, Hicken commended the CID for honouring its ranks who qualify themselves while noting that this aligns with the force’s aim of developing ev-

ery member. “I’m happy that the Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, took this step to ensure that you honour the people who would have qualified themselves. It is very simple; you are now in this era, and you’re getting everything free as far as I’m concerned. In our era, it was different, and so we are going to encourage you, from the most junior constable, every day you look at the papers, you look at advertisements, and you see what you can study. Getting yourself academically qualified is the

clusion.”

Performance

The top cop further commended the CID for its excellent performance, adding that the ranks are going beyond their call of duty to ensure the citizenry is safe.

rime Chief Wendell Blanhum on Monday revealed that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is working with its international partners to arrest two top leaders of Venezuela’s most notorious criminal networks, known as the R-Organisation, in connection with the deadly Mobil Service Station bombing back in October.

“The Guyana Police Force continues to work with our international counterparts to suppress, disrupt and indict criminal networks and their members involved in organised criminal activities. A case in point is the dangerous R-gang, which is based in neighbouring Venezuela. Without prejudice to the ongoing trial, key members of this notorious gang perpetrated the deadly gas station bombing in Guyana,” the Crime Chief stated. He added that the GPF, along with other law enforcement agencies, is working to arrest the two top leaders of this gang, who are Venezuelan nationals, and have them prosecuted in Guyana. Blanhum was at the time speaking at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Annual Award Ceremony at the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary, Georgetown. He added that, similar to working with inter-agencies and partners to facilitate the arrest of the Venezuelan gang members, the CID has made significant strides in collaborating with national, regional, and international law enforcement agencies. That’s them shoppers blowing their early pay and – any bonus that might’ve come their way!! No investing at this time of the year!! But now it looks like only our disabled folks – along with the Disciplined Forces – will have an extra top-up to splurge!! Your Eyewitness wondered why our uniformed personnel again hit the jackpot before Christmas – and figured that with the Yanks going after Mad Maduro, they gotta be on the ready!!

Anyhow, Christmas does come early for everyone in Guyana – whatever our means - and we enjoy it lustier than elsewhere. In your Eyewitness’s household, the Christmas Black cakes (plural!!) were “set” months ago and it was the job of yours truly to “season” them periodically with the spirits of the season!! He, of course, was duty bound to ensure that the said spirits were of the requisite proof!! It’s a dirty job, but…!!

So from last week, he’s been distributing Black Cakes from his Missus’s list and he must confess he’s been made welcome as if he were Santa Claus himself!! He had to contain himself from belting out the old geezer’s trademark “ho ho ho’s” – even though there aren’t any chimneys for him to slide down!!! There’s also the ginger beer that had been set – even though your Eyewitness thinks that sadly, that’s a dying tradition!!

But we have some new traditions being created. For one, there’s the “office social” that’s now so de rigueur that boss would be dubbed Scrooge if he didn’t spring for one!! The custom’s now being expanded exponentially by the burgeoning gaggle of trade associations and Chambers of Commerce throwing cocktail parties – so members can expand their networks!! But nothing can beat the good, ole Guyanese “sport” that started way back in rum shops after Christmas. Today, rum shops have become “bars” – from which no one’s barred!!

Now some may think your Eyewitness is overstressing the imbibing of the “spirits”. But he’s only tellin’ it like it is!! It goes back to our history – when during slavery and indentureship, Christmas was one of the few guaranteed holidays.

And liquor was handed out by Massa “to lift the spirits”!!

What troubled your Eyewitness – as it did the good citizen videoing it – was the desecration of the (newly) pristine scene was done in full view of the Police!! From the outpost placed there to keep law and order!!

Sophia taxi driver gunned down near home A

27-year-old taxi driver of Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was shot and killed near his home on Tuesday night. Dead is Xavier Fraser, a father of two.

Police stated that preliminary investigations revealed that Fraser was in the community when he sustained gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

During the same incident, a 19-year-old male, also of Plum Park, sustained gunshot wounds. He was admitted to GPHC and remains in a stable condition. Moments after the shooting, media operatives

spoke with the dead man’s mother, Thelma Butters, who recounted the events leading up to the tragedy.

“I was sleeping and around 10 O’clock [22:00h] I heard someone calling out. When I looked outside, my son’s friend said, ‘Your son get shot, he get shoot.’ I saw my son on his knees saying, ‘Ma, Ma,’” she recalled, revealing the last moments before he met his demise.

His mother said the individual who informed her about the shooting later transported Fraser to the hospital. “When I reached the hospital, the guy told me he was taking my son to buy a gun and that my son got shot. That is all I know,” she said. However, she dismissed that account, stating that she does not believe her son was involved in purchasing a firearm. “I don’t believe my son was going to buy a gun.

I believe my son was set up and shot…so I am calling for a proper investigation by the police so we can know what really happened to my son,” she said.

Reflecting on Fraser’s life, the grieving mother described him as a loving and supportive individual. “He was jovial, he was loving and he had children.

For the last six years, he stood by my side after I separated from my husband.

He was a father to his children, a father figure to my children and a backbone to me. I never expected this,” she said. The injured man was transported to GPHC where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. A 19-year-old male, also of Plum Park, who sustained gunshot injuries was admitted to the said hospital and remains in a stable condition. The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being actively investigated. CCTV footage is being reviewed as investigations continue.

However, the observers cautioned that institutional capacity and data governance infrastructure may not yet be

sufficiently robust. During preparations for the 2025 polls, GECOM acknowledged the benefits of biometric verification but cited legislative, technical, and administrative obstacles that prevented its implementation.

“GECOM has indicated that it will look at the feasibility of initiating biometric voter registration over the

post-election period,” the report said. The observers stressed that any move toward biometrics must involve inclusive and transparent legal reform, with particular attention paid to persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

Illegal guns, $18M in mercury seized by CANU

anks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) have seized illegal firearms, ammunition and a large quantity of mercury in two separate operations conducted on Sunday, as investigations continue into suspected organised criminal activity.

in the vicinity of Sheriff Street, Georgetown, where a suspect was stopped and searched. The search resulted in the discovery of one AK-47 rifle bearing serial number A1-72720-20 ROA, along with one magazine containing nineteen 7.62×39mm live rounds; one Glock 17 pistol bearing serial number LVH237, with one magazine containing seven 9mm live rounds; and

one Taurus pistol bearing serial number AHD901601, with one magazine and no ammunition.

The suspect was immediately arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters, along with the firearms and ammunition. During preliminary investigations, it was determined that the suspect possesses a valid firearm licence for the Glock 17 pistol only, while the

other weapons remain unlicensed. In a separate operation conducted also on Sunday, CANU officers intercepted a motor vehicle in the vicinity of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six also acting on intelligence received. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several parcels of a highly toxic and strictly controlled substance, which was subsequently confirmed

to be mercury. The suspect was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters, and

a preliminary evaluation placed the estimated street value of the seized mercury at approximately $18 million. Given the hazardous nature of the substance, the mercury was handed over to the Natural Resources Ministry for specialised processing and safe disposal. The suspect remains in Police custody, assisting investigators. CANU has confirmed that investigations are continuing in both matters, as they seek to determine whether the seizures are linked to broader criminal networks, including illegal arms trafficking and environmental crimes associated with mercury use.

Family clings to hope as Guyanese fisherman falls overboard in Surinamese waters

family of Whim Village is appealing for intensified search and rescue efforts after 54-year-old fisherman Permaul Punsammy who went missing while at sea during a fishing operation off Suriname. Punsammy, with more than three decades of experience, was reported missing the night of December 19, while working on a drift seine fishing vessel in the vicinity of the Coppename River. At the time of the incident, he was part of a four-man crew operating late at night. Relatives said Punsammy left Guyana on November 26 as part of a scheduled “double trip” and was expected to return after transporting the catch to Nickerie, Suriname.

However, while carrying out fishing operations near the river on Friday night, Punsammy reportedly fell overboard and has not been seen since.

proximately 32 years and was well accustomed to the demands and risks of working at sea. He explained that the vessel was crewed by a captain and three workers, including Permaul, when the incident occurred.

Gordon said the family last heard from Permaul during the fishing run and became alarmed when word came that he had disappeared during night operations.

Since then, there has been no sign of him. Officials in both Guyana and Suriname have been alerted to the incident, and the family is urging for broader coordination and assistance in the ongoing search. As the holiday season approaches, relatives say they are praying for a miracle, that Punsammy will be found alive and returned safely.

The family is urging anyone with information, or vessels operating in the area, to remain vigilant and report anything that may assist in locating the missing fisherman. Police in Guyana and Suriname continue to be alerted as the search remains ongoing.

he Guyana Police Force (GPF), through its Fallen Heroes Foundation, on Monday hosted a donation ceremony to provide financial assistance to the children of police officers who died in the line of duty. The ceremony was held at the Police Officers’ Mess, where cheques were presented to beneficiaries as part of the Foundation’s ongoing support programme.

The event brought together members of the Police Force, clergy, foundation officials and families of the fallen officers. In his opening remarks, President of the Fallen Heroes Foundation, Reverend Dr Murtland Raphael Massiah, CCH, assured the families that the GPF and the Foundation remain committed to remembering the sacrifice of the fallen officers and supporting their loved ones. He also encouraged the children to remain focused on their education and future goals.

griculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha on Monday handed over dairy stock to farmers as part of the Government of Guyana’s continued efforts to strengthen and expand the country’s dairy industry. Nineteen farmers benefited from the first phase of the initiative aimed at improving genetics, increasing milk production and building a competitive livestock sector. A released from the Agriculture Ministry stated that while addressing the gathering, Mustapha said that over the last five years, the Government has made significant advances across multiple aspects of the livestock industry, emphasising the importance of integrated agricultural systems to ensure sustainability and profitability for farmers.

“We have expended over $110 million to conduct 300 embryo transplants. This set of animals here, these are considered dairy animals. So, as you know, we

want to improve the beef and dairy sectors,” Mustapha said. He noted that the embryo transplant programme represents a historic milestone for Guyana, complementing the ongoing artificial insemination initiative and significantly improving the genetic quality of livestock nationwide. “Now, for the first time in the history of our country, we have started a new programme called embryo transplant.

We have had the artificial insemination programme, which, through critical investments, has also increased over the years,” the minister is quoted as saying. He further stressed that farmers must avoid a narrow approach to production and instead recognise the interdependence of crop and livestock development. “We are developing our agriculture sector in every area. We want the livestock sector to be very robust, resilient, and competitive in both the beef and dairy industries. Over

the last five years, we’ve increased budgetary allocation to this sector,” he said.

“When we produce crops like corn and soya, you as farmers will benefit because when you look at the livestock sector, when we produce more corn and soya, you will get feed at a cheaper cost. This is why, as farmers, you cannot have tunnel vision in this industry,” he explained.

Modern dairy processing plant

During the engagement, the Minister also informed farmers that Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) is partnering with an international company to establish a modern dairy processing plant at Moblissa.

He disclosed that the facility is approximately 90 per cent completed and will play a critical role in expanding Guyana’s dairy value chain.

olice are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in the early hours of Monday on Cemetery Road, Georgetown.

Reports are that the accident involved motorcar PAB 6212, a dark-coloured Toyota Rumion, and electric cycle EM 6699, ridden by 59-yearold Trevon Bacchus of Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown. The driver of the motor vehicle, a male whose identity and address are currently unknown, remains at large.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling north along the western drive lane of Cemetery Road at an alleged fast rate of speed when it struck the cyclist, who was riding along the extreme western edge of the road.

The animals handed over are referred to as seed stock and are products of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority’s sex embryo transplant programme, under which only female embryos were implanted. The programme has recorded a zero-mortality rate, reflecting the effectiveness of the technology and the high standard of veterinary oversight.

Mustapha also highlighted parallel initiatives within the small ruminant sector, aimed at reducing imports and positioning Guyana as a regional supplier of quality livestock products. “We’ve also embarked on a programme to develop a new brand in the small ruminant sector. We want to create a special Black Belly brand of mutton coming out of this part of the hemisphere.

We have collaborated with Barbados and so far, ap-

proximately 500 farmers in the small ruminant industry have already been given animals and other forms of assistance so that they can increase their stock,” he noted.

In a few years, he explained, Guyana will be able to replace the brands of mutton coming from New Zealand and Australia. He also said that through targeted investments, Guyana is also on the path to becoming a net exporter to the Caricom market.

“Give me some forgiveness” – man accused of killing miner asks …to spend over 11 years in prison

hirty-year-old miner Francisco Sampson, also known as “Junior,” was on Monday sentenced to 11 years and six months’ imprisonment for the killing of fellow miner Eon Anthony Ramnarine at a mining location in the Potaro Backdam, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

The sentence was handed down by Justice Priscilla Chandra-Hanif at the Essequibo High Court, following Sampson’s conviction for manslaughter. He was initially charged for murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

Justice Chandra-Hanif ordered that the time already spent in custody be deducted from the overall sentence.

The judge also directed prison authorities to ensure that Sampson is enrolled in and successfully completes conflict resolution and rehabilitation programmes, as well as psychological counselling, prior to the completion of his term. The conviction stems from the October 4, 2021, killing of 38-year-old Eon Anthony Ramnarine, a father of three, at Obanna Backdam, Kurubrong, Potaro. Ramnarine, also known as “Anthony,” and Sampson were acquaint-

ed, as both men worked and lived in close proximity at neighbouring mining camps.

According the prosecution’s case, at about 11:45h on October 4, 2021, police at the Mahdia Police Station received a report of an alleged murder at Obanna Backdam. Ranks immediately proceeded to the area to carry out investigations.

Upon arrival, the officers were taken to the mining camp of Francisco Sampson Snr., the convict’s father, where they encountered both the elder Sampson and the accused. During the interaction with police, the younger Sampson handed over a black-handled knife and told officers that it was the weapon he used to stab Ramnarine. He then led the ranks to a nearby bushy area, where Ramnarine’s body was found lying motionless on the ground, partially covered with a bedsheet.

A piece of wood bearing what appeared to be blood stains was also found near the body.

Arrest and admission

At the scene, Sampson claimed that Ramnarine had struck him with a piece of wood, prompting him to use

a knife, which he said he carried for mechanical work to stab him. Sampson was escorted from the scene along with the body, the knife, and the piece of wood to the Mahdia Regional Hospital and then he was taken to the Mahdia Police Station.

The defence, led by Attorney L.N. Dindayal, highlighted Sampson’s age, his expression of remorse, his previously good character, and his cooperation with the police as factors warranting leniency. However, prosecutors Caressa Henry and Fenton Budhram stressed the gravity of the offence, the use of excessive violence with a deadly weapon, namely a knife, the enduring impact of the killing on Ramnarine’s family, and the prevalence of similar violent offences within society. In a victim impact statement, Ewart Austin, Ramnarine’s father, told the court that his son was a dedicated provider for his children.

Addressing the court, Sampson expressed regret for his actions, stating, “I am really sorry for what happened…I didn’t expect it to happen like this. A life has been taken, and I want the family [of Ramnarine] to give me some forgiveness.”

32-year-old man of New Found Out Village, Essequibo River, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for an attack in 2022 that left a boat captain permanently injured and unable to work.

Stephen Rodrigues was sentenced last week at the High Court in Essequibo by Justice Priscilla ChandraHanif, following his conviction for felonious wounding.

The court ordered that the time already spent in custody be deducted from the sentence.

In addition to the custodial term, Justice ChandraHanif directed prison authorities to ensure that Rodrigues successfully completes both an alcohol rehabilitation programme and an anger management programme before the end of his incarceration.

Permanently injured

The offence relates to a December 20, 2022, attack at Foul Mouth, Essequibo River, during which Rodrigues chopped George Braithwaite, then a boat captain, and his wife Lynette Braithwaite.

George Braithwaite, now 62 years old, addressed the court through information presented during the proceedings, detailing the longterm physical, emotional and economic consequences of the attack on himself and his family.

At the time of the incident, Braithwaite was an active boat captain. However, he told the court that his mobility has since been severely compromised, leaving him unable to lift weights or resume his occupation. As a result, he is currently unemployed.

To survive, Braithwaite explained that he now relies on fishing and small-scale

cash crop farming to support himself and his wife.

The court was also told that Lynette Braithwaite remains partially incapacitated due to the injuries she sustained during the same incident, compounding the family’s hardship.

According to facts presented by the prosecution, the incident arose out of what was described as a misunderstanding. During the altercation, Rodrigues brutally chopped both victims about their bodies using a cutlass.

The injured couple was initially rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital, but due to the severity of their wounds, they were later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for advanced medical treatment.

Following the attack, Rodrigues went into hiding and remained on the run for several weeks. He was eventually apprehended by police in January 2023 and subsequently charged.

Conviction

Rodrigues was initially placed on trial for attempted murder. However, after hearing the evidence, a jury returned a verdict of guilty on the lesser offence of felonious wounding.

The court also heard Rodrigues had previously been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for felonious wounding in relation to injuries inflicted on Lynette Braithwaite, arising out of the same incident.

The prosecution was led

by State Counsel Caressa Henry, while Rodrigues was represented by attorney L. N. Dindayal.

In a plea to the court prior to sentencing, Rodrigues expressed remorse for his actions and appealed for leni-

ency. “I am very sorry for everything,” he told the court, adding that he deeply regretted how the events unfolded.

“I know it was my mistake. I am a changed person today.”

Rodrigues claimed that the two years he had already spent in prison had transformed his life. He told the court that while incarcerated at Camp Street Prison, he gave his life to Christ and served as a pastor.

He further explained that he is the father of three young children, aged seven, three and one, and pleaded with the court to show mercy.

Rodrigues also stated that he had sought forgiveness from the Braithwaite family, explaining that he attends the same church and had personally apologised to them. “I would never make that mistake again,” he said.

In delivering her ruling, Justice Chandra-Hanif emphasised the seriousness of violent offences and the need for accountability, while carefully weighing the mitigating factors advanced by the defence against the aggravating circumstances highlighted by the prosecution.

Justice Chandra-Hanif indicated that the sentence was intended not only as punishment but also as an opportunity for rehabilitation.

In this regard, the court ordered Rodrigues to mandatorily attend Alcoholics Anonymous programmes, after a probation report identified alcohol abuse as the root cause of his involvement in the attack.

He was also directed to participate in anger management counselling to help him better regulate his emotions and reintegrate responsibly into society upon release.

Why sitting too long on the toilet is a problem

or many people, the bathroom has quietly become a place of extended scrolling news updates, social media, messages, and videos, all consumed while sitting on the toilet.

What was once a quick biological routine has turned into a prolonged daily habit. Unfortunately, this mod-

From a clinical perspective, the toilet is not designed for prolonged sitting. When you sit on a toilet seat, gravity increases pressure on the veins of the rectum and anus. This pressure becomes even greater when a person strains or sits idle for long periods.

Using a phone extends the time spent on the toilet far beyond what is physiologically necessary. What should take two to three minutes can stretch into 15 or 20 minutes. During this time, blood pools in the rectal veins, increasing swell-

movements harder. Add phone use and prolonged sitting, and the risk increases significantly.

Common signs and symptoms

People with haemorrhoids often describe: • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl • Anal itching or irritation • Pain or discomfort during or after bowel movements • Swelling or a lump near the anus • A feeling of incomplete evacuation Internal haemorrhoids may bleed without pain, while external haemorrhoids are more likely to cause discomfort, swelling, or clotting.

When phone use makes things worse

The link between phone use and haemorrhoids is not about radiation or screens; it’s about time and posture. Sitting upright on a toilet with the hips flexed increases pressure in the rectal veins compared to a squatting position, which is more anatomically natural for bowel movements.

When phone use prolongs sitting, it magnifies this pressure. Over weeks and months, the cumulative effect becomes clinically significant.

Diagnosis and when to seek care

What are haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the lower rectum or around the anus.

Everyone has these veins, but they become problematic when they swell, stretch, or become inflamed. Haemorrhoids can be internal, located inside the rectum, or external, forming under the skin around the anus.

Haemorrhoids are usually diagnosed based on symptoms and a simple physical examination. However, rectal bleeding should never be automatically assumed to be haemorrhoids, especially in adults over 40.

Other conditions, including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or anal fissures, must be ruled out.

Seek medical care if bleeding is persistent, pain is severe, or symptoms do not improve with basic measures.

Treatment: Simple steps often work best

Most haemorrhoids improve with conservative treatment: • Increasing fibre intake through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains • Drinking adequate water • Avoiding straining • Limiting toilet time to no more than five minutes • Warm sitz baths to relieve discomfort.

S President Donald Trump said on Monday it would be smart for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to leave power, and the United States could keep or sell the oil it had seized off the coast of Venezuela in recent weeks.

Trump's pressure campaign on Maduro has included a ramped-up military presence in the region and more than two dozen military strikes on vessels allegedly trafficking drugs in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea near the South American nation. At least 100 persons have been killed in the attacks.

Asked if the goal was to force Maduro from power, Trump told reporters: "Well, I think it probably would...

Ecuadorean soldiers jailed for 34 years over boys' forced disappearance

leven Ecuadorean soldiers have been sentenced to 34 years in prison each after being found guilty of the forced disappearance of four boys last year.

The discovery of the beaten and burned remains of the four boys, aged between 11 and 15, shocked the violence-wracked nation.

The court found a military patrol had picked up the boys as they returned from playing football in the city of Guayaquil, forced them to strip off their clothes, beat them and left them naked in a desolate, dangerous and abandoned location.

One of the boys called his father but, by the time he arrived, they were no longer there. Their burned bodies were found days later

close to a military base near Guayaquil.

In total, 17 soldiers were on trial over the disappearance of 15-yearold Nehemías Arboleda, 11-year-old Steven Medina, and brothers Ismael, 15, and Josué Arroyo, 14.

Eleven of the soldiers were sentenced to 34 years and eight months in prison and five were given reduced sentences of two and a half years for cooperating with the prosecution.

A Lieutenant Colonel who had not been on patrol with the rest of the group was declared not guilty.

The soldiers had been sent on patrol as part of the Government's crackdown on criminal gangs in the country, which has seen its crime rate skyrocket as the gangs'

power has expanded.

Defence officials had originally said that the four boys had been stopped by the patrol, because they were suspects in a robbery.

But the Judge ruled that they had been "innocent victims of a State crime" and ordered that their families be issued with an official apology and that the four victims be commemorated with a plaque.

Defence lawyers had argued that because the boys were alive when the soldiers left, the accused were not responsible for their death.

But the Judge concluded that leaving them in such a dangerous and desolate location "was the cause of the victims' death". It is not known who burned the bodies.

T&T Appeal Court denies Jamaican lawyer’s bid to go before Privy Council

rinidad and Tobago’s Court of Appeal has denied Jamaica-born King’s Counsel, Vincent Nelson, from going before the London-based Privy Council to challenge a 2019 corruption conviction.

The Court of Appeal refused Nelson’s application for conditional leave to approach the Privy Council, which is Trinidad and

Tobago’s highest and final court, agreeing with the state that the matter was procedural and raised no issue to warrant a challenge.

Justice Nolan Bereaux, who delivered the oral ruling on behalf of Justices James Aboud and Ricky Rahim, said the decision of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to prose-

cute did not breach Nelson’s constitutional rights and that due process safeguards were fully observed during the plea agreement process.

n the wake of rising geopolitical unrest and the devastating impact of category-five Hurricane Melissa, Caricom Secretary General, Dr Carla Barnett has commended member states for their displays of characteristic resilience in 2025.

In her end-of-year message, Barnett said the challenges faced by member states this year exposed their vulnerabilities and, more than ever, highlighted the value of regional unity.

“Hurricane Melissa left death and destruction in its wake in Jamaica and in Haiti.

Recovery will take considerable resources and time. In addition, unprecedented geopolitical headwinds threatened export earnings, regional peace, and sovereignty.

“Amid these and other challenges…we pulled together urgently to help address critical needs in the aftermath

of the devastating hurricanes, and pivoted creatively to safeguard businesses and livelihoods.”

She also noted the decision by Barbados, Belize, Dominica, and St Vincent and the Grenadines to allow full and free movement among nationals in the implementation of the Caricom Single Market and Economy, a decision she said paves the way for economic activity and community exchange.

“The framework for a comprehensive Caricom Industrial Policy and Strategy is also well advanced, laying the foundation for stronger and more integrated productive capacity, innovation and economic diversification. In agriculture, the continued implementation of the 25 by 2025+ strategy yielded growth in production, although the hurricane and other climate-related events caused significant setbacks for

Oil loading in Venezuela slows, more ships make U-turns after new US interceptions

anker loading in Venezuela dwindled on Monday, with most ships moving oil cargoes only between domestic ports following US action against two more ships and as State-run energy company PDVSA struggles to recover from a cyberattack, according to tracking data and sources.

The US Coast Guard this month seized a supertanker under sanctions carrying Venezuelan oil and tried to intercept two more Venezuelarelated ships over the weekend, US authorities said. One of them is an empty ship under US sanctions, and the other is an unsanctioned, fully-loaded tanker bound for China.

Washington has not provided updated information on the ships. However, US President Donald Trump's announced blockade of all oil tankers under sanctions entering and leaving Venezuela has kept vessel owners on alert.

Later on Monday, Trump said Washington would maybe keep or maybe sell the oil it had seized off the coast of Venezuela in recent weeks, adding the United States would also keep the seized ships.

Panama's Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha said in a TV interview on Monday that supertanker Centuries, which was flying Panama's flag when intercepted on Saturday, did not respect the country's maritime rules and had altered its name and disconnected its transponder while carrying an oil cargo out of Venezuela.

A country that provides its flag to a vessel in its official registry can cancel the ship's registration if an investigation determines it did not follow maritime rules.

Oil prices rise

The vessel interceptions

have dealt the toughest blow to PDVSA since the US Treasury Department in 2020 imposed sanctions on the company's former oil trading firms, two units of Russia's Rosneft, which forced output and export cuts.

Brent crude futures rose 2.4 per cent to US$61.94 a barrel on Monday afternoon, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also climbed 2.4 per cent to US$57.89 following the US actions and amid Russia's war against Ukraine, with both developments raising fears of supply disruptions.

As of Monday, PDVSA had delivered a 1.9 million-barrel cargo of heavy crude to the Aruba-flagged sanctioned vessel Azure Voyager at the Jose port, but no other supertanker bound for Asia was scheduled to load soon, internal company documents showed.

The number of loaded tankers that have not departed has increased in recent days, leaving millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil stuck in ships, while customers demand deeper discounts and contract changes to take risky voyages beyond the country's waters.

Some tankers approaching Venezuela's coast, either to load oil for export or to deliver imported naphtha, have also made U-turns or suspended navigation recently until instructions from owners to load are clarified, LSEG monitoring data showed on Monday.

PDVSA is slowly restoring some online systems and resorting to written records after a cyberattack last week.

The company has been unable to fully re-establish its centralised administrative system, and many workers have not received their salaries on time, sources said.

PDVSA and Venezuela's Oil Ministry have not replied to requests for comment. The country's Foreign Affairs

Minister, Yvan Gil, said on Monday the US seizures are against international law and constitute "acts of piracy".

China's Foreign Ministry said on Monday the recent US interceptions were a serious violation of international law.

PDVSA's main joint-venture partner Chevron exported a 500,000-barrel cargo of Venezuelan oil on Sunday, bound for the US Gulf Coast on one of its tankers under its US authorisation, LSEG ship data showed.

Oil Minister Delcy Rodriguez said on Sunday Venezuela had not interrupted deliveries to Chevron.

Chevron has exported seven cargoes of Venezuelan oil to the US this month, according to monitoring data.

The empty supertanker Bella 1, which the U.S. Coast Guard tried to intercept on Sunday when the ship approached Venezuela, was drifting on Monday northeast of Bermuda in the Caribbean, a satellite image obtained by TankerTrackers.com showed.

A US official told Reuters on Sunday the tanker had not been boarded and that interceptions could take different forms – including by sailing or flying close to vessels of concern.

The loaded vessel Skipper, the first seized by the US this month, on Sunday reached an area near the Galveston, Texas port for transferring oil cargoes, maritime sources said. Guyana said last week the tanker had falsely used its flag.

ost major stock indexes were higher at the start of a holiday-shortened week on Monday, with shares of Nvidia rising, while the yen strengthened against the US dollar after Japanese officials warned against "one-sided and sharp" currency moves.

Gold and silver jumped to record highs, and oil prices also rose after the US Coast Guard tried to intercept an oil tanker in international waters near Venezuela a day earlier.

Wall Street stocks were helped in part by a continued rebound in technology stocks, although the advance was broad and almost all of the 11 S&P 500 sectors ended higher.

Nvidia was up 1.5 per cent. Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that Nvidia has told Chinese clients it aims to start shipping its second-most powerful artificial intelligence chips to China before the Lunar New Year holiday in mid-February.

With US equity and bond markets closed on Thursday for Christmas, trading volumes could be light through the end of the week.

"The late November downdraft was the intermediate bottom that took many of the technology, AI and data-centre names down ... I do believe that was the bottom," said Bruce Zaro, managing director at Granite Wealth Management in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Now, he said, the market is "entering the Santa Claus period," which is typically a strong time for stocks.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 227.79 points, or 0.47 per cent, to 48,362.68, the S&P 500 rose 43.99 points, or 0.64 per cent, to 6878.49 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 121.21 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 23,428.83.

Warner Bros Discovery rose 3.5 per cent after Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison agreed to provide a personal guarantee of US$40.4 billion of the equity financing for Paramount Skydance's offer to acquire the company. Paramount's shares rose 4.3 per cent.

MSCI's gauge of stocks across the globe rose 7.10 points, or 0.70 per cent, to 1015.49.

Spot gold was up 2.2 per cent at US$4434.26 per ounce after hitting an all-time high of US$4441.92 earlier. Spot silver was up 1.9 per cent at US$68.40 after hitting a new high of US$69.44.

Brent crude rose US$1.60 to settle at US$62.07 a barrel.

Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry on Sunday as his special envoy to Greenland, drawing renewed criticism from Denmark and Greenland over Washington's interest in the mineral-rich Arctic island.

Trump has advocated for Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, to become part of the United States, citing its strategic importance and mineral resources.

Landry, who took office as Governor in January 2024, publicly supports the idea.

A leading campaigner on the issue, Republican

congressman Thomas Massie, said he could try to bring contempt proceedings against the Attorney General as a result.

The DoJ insists it is complying with its legal obligations, and Bondi herself has said she is part of "the most transparent administration in American history".

Syrian Govt and SDF agree to de-escalate Russia escalates attacks after Aleppo violence on key Ukrainian region of Odesa

yrian Government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) agreed to de-escalate on Monday evening in the northern city of Aleppo, after a wave of attacks that both sides blamed on each other left at least two civilians dead and several wounded.

Syria's State news agency SANA, citing the Defence Ministry, said the army's general command issued an order to stop targeting the SDF's fire sources.

The SDF said in a statement later that it had issued instructions to stop responding to attacks by Syrian Government forces following de-escalation contacts.

The Syrian Health Ministry said two people

were killed and several were wounded in shelling by the SDF on residential neighbourhoods in the city. The injuries included two children and two civil defence workers.

The violence erupted hours after Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a visit to Damascus that the SDF appeared to have no intention of honouring a commitment to integrate into the State's armed forces by an agreed year-end deadline.

ussia has intensified its strikes on the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa, causing widespread power cuts and threatening the region's maritime infrastructure.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said Moscow was carrying out "systematic" attacks on the region. Last week, he warned that the focus of the war "may have shifted towards Odesa".

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the repeated attacks were an attempt by Moscow to block Ukraine's access to maritime logistics.

Earlier in December, Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to sever

Ukraine's access to the sea as retaliation for drone attacks on tankers of Russia's "shadow fleet" in the Black Sea. "Shadow fleet" is a term that refers to hundreds of tankers used by Russia to bypass Western sanctions imposed after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

On Monday evening, strikes hit port infrastructure in Odesa, damaging a civilian vessel, the regional governor said.

hina is likely to have loaded more than 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles across its latest three silo fields and has no desire for arms control talks, according to a draft Pentagon report which highlighted Beijing's growing military ambitions.

China is expanding and modernising its weapons stockpile faster than any other nuclear-armed power, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a Chicago-based non-profit.

Beijing has described reports of a military buildup

as efforts to "smear and defame China and deliberately mislead the international community".

Last month, US President Donald Trump said that he may be working on a plan to denuclearise with China and Russia.

But the draft Pentagon report, which was seen by Reuters, said Beijing did not appear to be interested.

he Colts Basketball Club stamped their authority on the local basketball scene on Sunday night as they powered their way to the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Under-23 Knockout Tournament 2025 title, defeating the Stabroek Eagles in emphatic fashion at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).

ead Coach Brendon McCullum says he wants to remain in charge of England, but admits a decision on his future will be out of his hands.

McCullum has presided over an Ashes defeat in Australia inside three Tests, a series he previously said would "define" his team.

The New Zealander is contracted to England through to the end of the 50-over World Cup in 2027, a period that includes the next home Ashes in the same year.

"It's a pretty good gig. It's good fun," said McCullum. "You travel the world with the lads and try to play some exciting cricket and try to achieve some things.

"You want to try to get the best out of people. I don't do anything to protect the job. It's a matter of trying to just get the very best out of the people and try to achieve what you can with them."

In the aftermath of defeat in the third Test against Australia in Adelaide, Ben Stokes said he "absolutely" wants to remain England Captain.

Like McCullum, Stokes has a deal with England until 2027 after signing a new central contract in November.

The futures of both men would possibly be decided

by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) men's Managing Director Rob Key, whose position will also come under scrutiny. Key is due to address the media today in Melbourne, the venue for the fourth Test on Boxing Day. Asked if he believes he will be in charge for the home summer next year, McCullum said: "I don't know. It's not really up to me, is it?

"I'll just keep trying to do the job, trying to learn the lessons I haven't quite got right here and try to make some adjustments.

Those questions are for someone else, not for me."

The former New Zealand Captain was appointed by Key in 2022 in the aftermath of the previous Ashes tour, a 4-0 defeat.

Alongside Stokes, McCullum revitalised England's Test cricket, presiding over 10 wins from his first 11 games in charge.

But England's form has since stagnated. They have not won any of their marquee fivematch series against Australia or India. Following the initial run of success, England have won 15 and lost 16 out of 33 Tests.

Any decision over McCullum's future is complicated by the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.

Initially appointed solely as Test Coach, McCullum also assumed responsibility for the England white-ball teams at the beginning of this year.

"I'm enjoying the time that I've got with these guys and

we've made some progress from when I took over to where we are," he said.

"We're not the finished article, but we've definitely improved as a cricket team.

We've had an identity about us.

"Now's the time for us in the last two Tests to really show that identity and try to salvage something from it."

The defeat in Adelaide extended England's winless run in Tests in Australia to 18 matches. They have not won a series in that country since 2010-11.

In once again going 3-0 down after three matches, they are left to battle against the indignity of a 5-0 clean sweep.

Three previous England teams have lost Ashes series 5-0 in Australia.

England could drop batter Ollie Pope for the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where a crowd touching 100,000 is expected. Jacob Bethell is the reserve batter in the tourists' squad.

If England freshen up their pace attack, Brydon Carse seems the most likely candidate to be left out.

The visitors also have a decision to make over Shoaib Bashir, who arrived in Australia as their first-choice spinner, but has not featured in the first three Tests.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is in Australia playing T20 cricket in the Big Bash, but McCullum said he will not look outside his 16man squad for reinforcements.

"I can't imagine we'll bring anyone in from the outside," he said. "We'll have to have a look at what the conditions are in Melbourne and work out what we think is going to be our best team for those conditions and that contest."

Following defeat in the second Test in Brisbane, McCullum said his team could not have a "glass jaw", while Captain Stokes said Australia is "no place for weak men".

Then, in the run-up to the third Test in Adelaide, Stokes admitted to having "raw" conversations with the England players about his message.

But opener Zak Crawley later claimed to not be aware of the "weak men" comments.

When McCullum was asked if the players still have faith in his method, he replied: "I hope so. You'll have to ask them.

"I'll always have the back of my players, and always support them, and I'll always make sure that I'm protective of them as well in a public forum.

"That doesn't mean you don't challenge privately, but in a public forum, you're always protective. I guess you'll have to ask those questions elsewhere, but I wouldn't imagine anything would change in the coming days as we look to try and salvage something from this."

Duffy was the perfect weapon for New Zealand. They'd wised up to him only in August and four months later here he is, with more than twice as many wickets as his nearest competitor in this series (23 vs 10).

And it was not just that he was bunging it into the pitch and waiting for it to misbehave. Alick Athanaze's wicket highlighted that Duffy has the smarts to lead this attack. He began by testing the West Indian's back foot play and bringing natural variation into play. There was plenty of up and down bounce to worry the batter. But that was not how he wanted him. Just where. Duffy had pinned Athanaze to his crease and having accomplished that, he snuck in the fuller de-

livery and nicked him off on the move.

Duffy and Ajaz bowled nearly 70 per cent of New Zealand's overs in the final innings. The left-arm spinner went unchanged from the moment he was introduced into the attack on the fifth day (2918-23-3). Together they were undeniable.

New Zealand took the series 2-0 and climbed to second place on the World Test Championship (WTC) table.

Later in the evening, they'll part ways with Williamson who has already said without saying that he won't be with them in January in India.

"There's a pretty large block away from the group as well, and there'll be more conversations had," he announced on Sunday. On Monday, he celebrated a hard-earned Test win. On Thursday, he'll enjoy Christmas with his family. Beyond that, his future appears unknown.

He might already have played his final Test match at his home ground.

Chase’s Academy make history after tense penalty shootout C

hase’s Academic Foundation, on Sunday night, became the first school to lift back-to-back KFC Goodwill International championship trophies after getting the better of St Benedict’s College on penalties for the second consecutive year.

Chase’s Academic Foundation had sealed it – their second consecutive KFC Goodwill International football championship.

A replica of last year’s final between the Guyanese and Trinidadian sides, it was a bad case of déjà vu for the visitors who, again, fought hard but lost it at the last moment on penalties.

Playing in slushy conditions following inclement weather early on Sunday at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Ground, Chase had a number of early opportunities, but luck just was not on their side.

First, Captain Bryan Wharton’s free kick from just outside the 18-yard box hit the crossbar, ricocheting out to the goalkeeper while Isaiah Ifill’s shot from the left corner of the box also brushed the uprights.

For St Benedict’s, Ruben Phillip was a force to be reckoned with, but

the defending champions’ defence worked overtime to ensure he was contained.

As such, the 90 minutes of regulation time and an additional 20 minutes of extra time expired with no goals being scored.

From the penalty spot, Chase’s Academy were flawless, finding the back of the net in each of their five attempts. However, just when St Benedict’s were

going good, their fifth kicker sent the ball sailing high over the right corner of the goal, handing Chase a 5-4 win.

After the match, Chase’s Captain Wharton discussed his team’s outing in the final and their performance over this year.

“I think it was under difficult circumstances, because the pitch was terrible and we had to adjust, but, nevertheless, we come

out on top and I want to give God all praises for this victory,” Wharton told media operatives after the final.

“It really means a lot to we, because we show our dominance at the international level to let people know that Guyana is a standout country with talent.”

“I think the hunger from the fellas and focus was good, everybody was focused and determined to win the major

trophy, which was the KFC. So, we’re grateful for that.”

The Chase forward went on to share about their various trophywinning performances in 2025.

Prior to the final, Jamaica’s Kingston College secured the third-place trophy with a 4-1 defeat of Suriname’s Technical School of Nickerie.

For Kingston College, Jusiri Hussey registered a blistering hat-trick with goals in the 12th, 26th and 63rd minutes while Nthanda Scott had a solitary strike in the 51st. Jonathan Gomes netted Suriname’s consolation in the 55th minute.

When it came to the tournament’s individual prizes, Chase’s Academy claimed the lion’s share. Flavio La Rose was adjudged as the best goalkeeper, while Bryan Wharton was recognised as the highest goalscorer with 11 goals in the competition.

Malcolm Hendricks was the player to receive the golden opportunity of a training stint in Brazil next year, as he was hailed as the competition’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

scout explained, “This MVP award is taking into consideration the five games that would’ve been played by Chase, reaching to the finals. Chase Academy had three guys on the radar, but I must admit that Malcolm was an engine at the back there. I’ve seen all the other players, congratulations to all of you for winning. We also looked at Malcolm’s education, he’s on the right path, he has the support, I hope you continue to give him that support.”

“It will be one-three months in Brazil at a professional club to see where your standard is at and hopefully, he will return and shine more light to Guyana and its footballing community,” Wilson went on to share.

While Chase’s Academy copped a US$2500 prize, St Benedict’s had to settle for US$1500 while Kingston College will take home US$1000.

t was an exciting conclusion to the Terrence Ali National Open Boxing Championships on Sunday evening, as the Guyana Defence Force’s (GDF) boxing gym did as their name suggests, defending their ‘best gym’ title in a night of fistic fury.

Though challenged by the strength of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), GDF’s pugilists held firm on the final night of the competition to ensure the trophy would stay at Camp Ayanganna.

New Amsterdam’s Kurt Mahase pulled off a win against Isaiah Nurse of Andrew Lewis Gym (ALG) in the 53- 58kg final.

However, ALG managed to turn the tables when Ken Harvey was the victor in a contest that was stopped by the referee, against his gym-mate Curtis McDonald.

Joel Williamson added some much-needed points to Rose Hall Jammers’(RHJ) tally with a victory over FYF’s Patrick Harvey. However, their fortunes couldn’t roll over to the ensuing bout as GDF’s Colin Lewis with his customary flair put a stop to RHJ’s Jamal Eastman.

Another all-FYF battle ended with Shaquain James’ hands being lifted by the referee, after he took on Mark Crawford.

Desmond Amsterdam, representing GDF, showcased his international experience with a comfortable victory in

the 71-75kg clash with Travis Inverary.

Another win went GDF’s way when their boxer Orlando Norton took down Carsol Goodchild of ALG in the 75-80kg final.

GDF’s Wayne July then capped off their campaign with a victory over Aquency Harvey.

FYF’s boxers continued to put up a fight, even as the card wound down with Emmanuel Pompey pulling off a thrilling win over GDF’s Zedan Gray.

Then, the lone women’s bout of the night, pitting the Jackman sisters against each other, ended with Abiola claiming the win.

The Terrence Ali National Open Championships were the last stop on the Guyana Boxing Associaton’s (GBA) calendar for 2025, ending on quite an exciting note.

n six innings during the three-match Test series in New Zealand, West Indies Test Captain Roston Chase managed only 42 runs.

According to Chase, he could have contributed more to the team, where the West Indies went down 2-0 to the Black Caps.

"I had a tough series, very below par. I did not lead from the front. In terms of going out there and producing for the team, I thought I let myself down and the team as well. I want to go out there and show that I was not just talking. I had some good balls in this series, but I thought I could have given some more to the team," Chase said at the post-match press conference.

The Test Captain also credited the New Zealand team for their strategic approach towards a 323-run win in the final Test.

"Disappointed in West Indies' efforts. I thought the Kiwis were strategic and had good plans. We really wanted to get a win for the first time.

We thought we would have gotten the opportunity to win a game."

"We thought it would have spun; we did not expect the wicket to deteriorate like it did, with cracks and uneven bounce. After the first day, we saw a lot of green coming off the wicket," Chase said.

When asked what areas of improvement are immediately needed from the West Indies, Chase highlighted a solid total in the first innings.

"I think batting in your first innings is key. Getting that first-innings score around 300 would play a greater part for us to move the game forward. It's something we're trying to work on."

"The bowlers gave a good effort and never stopped trying despite a few niggles. Before the series started, the goal was for batsmen to get centuries in each game, so we were pleased to get three centuries in the three-match series," Chase

explained.

"We were put on the back foot early, so we had to play for a draw, but the pitch always had a ball with your name."

Double centurion Justin Greaves was the leading runscorer for West Indies with 283 runs, while Shai Hope scored 255 runs. Brandon King had 185 runs, and Kavem Hodge had 158 runs in two matches.

John Campbell scored 135 runs, while Guyanese Tevin Imlach made only 81 runs in six innings.

Kemar Roach was the star with the ball for West Indies with 10 wickets, while Jayden Seales and Anderson Phillip had six wickets each.
