Gas-to-energy project will provide foundation for renewable energy –Guyana President allow more investments in renewables EEPGL AlastairPresidentRoutledge

The gas-to-energy proj ect, which is being fi nanced by oil giant ExxonMobil, is a transfor mative venture that accord ing to Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) President Alastair Routledge, will provide Guyana with a foundation for its renewable energy ef forts. In an interview shared by the company with the local media, Routledge de scribed the present and fu ture as an exciting time for Guyana. This is particular ly in the context of the infra structural works and their local content efforts. “It’s an exciting time to be in Guyana. We’re in the early days of finding and de veloping the resource in the country. And I’m excited to see how that is already hav ing an impact on local busi nesses and people.” “We’re employing thou sands of Guyanese already here. We’re seeing infra structure improvements starting to take place. I think we’re really at the very beginning, with many opportunities.”Whenitcomes to the gas-to-energy project, which is already at a pro curement stage where the Government is seeking to contract a firm to con struct the components of the project under a combined Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) pro cess, Routledge talked up the significance of this en deavour.“I’mreally excited about the gas-to-energy project. That will affect so many peo ple in the country, reducing energy prices, making en ergy more affordable, but also providing a foundation for investment in more re newable sources of energy. So, it’s a really transforma tional project,” the executive said. This is even as procure ment has already been start ed by the Government of Guyana for the gas-to-shore project. With a timetable to deliver rich gas by the end of 2024 and the Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) plant to be on line by 2025, works are pro gressing on getting the proj ect off the ground. As such, during the first half of this year, Exxon was expected to source the materials, so that they are available for when construction starts later this year. The project will have a 25-year lifespan and is ex pected to employ up to 800 workers during the peak construction stage, as well as some 40 full-time work ers during the operations stage, and another 50 work ers during the decommis sioning stage. The gas-to-shore project will include a power plant and a NGL plant, all of which will be constructed with in the Wales Development Zone (WDZ). When it comes to the construction of a com bined cycle power plant, this will generate up to 300 megawatts (MW) of power, with a net 250MW delivered into the Guyana Power and Light Grid at a sub-station located on the East Bank of the Demerara River. The Guyana Government has already invited interest ed parties to make invest ments in the WDZ, which will be heavily industri alised and for which approx imately 150 acres of land has been allocated. Those lands were previously used by the Wales Sugar Estate. Head of the Gas-toShore Task Force, Winston Brassington has previous ly stated that ExxonMobil Guyana, which is funding the pipeline aspect of the project out of cost oil, has found that there would be substantial savings from combining these two facili ties. The scope of the approxi mately US$900 million gasto-shore project also consists of the construction of 225 ki lometres of pipeline from the Liza field in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana, where Exxon and its part ners are currently produc ing Itoil.features approximate ly 220 kilometres of a subsea pipeline offshore that will run from the Liza Destiny and Liza Unity floating, pro duction, storage and offload ing (FPSO) vessels in the Stabroek Block to the shore. Upon landing on the West Coast Demerara shore, the pipeline would continue for approximately 25 kilometres to the NGL plant at Wales, West Bank Demerara. The pipeline would be 12 inches wide, and is ex pected to transport per day, some 50 million standard cubic feet (mscfpd) of dry gas to the NGL plant, but it has the capacity to push as much as 120 mscfpd. The pipeline’s route on shore would follow the same path as the fibre-optic ca bles, and will terminate at Hermitage, part of the WDZ which will house the gas-toshore project.

The global order cre ated by the American em pire was designed to act as a counterfoil to the he gemonic ambitions of the Soviet Union. African and Caribbean nations were either cajoled or coerced into joining team America or team Soviet Union. The proximity of the Caribbean to the US meant that many Caribbean Governments were given Hobson's choice; that is: taking what was of fered or nothing at all, and any regional leaders who stepped out of line felt the American whip across their backs. The globalist sys tem championed by the American empire sought to negotiate the lowering of, or removal of, tariffs to facili tate greater global trade. Unfortunately, as point ed out by Joseph Stiglitz in his book “Globalization and Its Discontent”, while the Americans, Western Europeans, and Japanese were advocating the remov al of tariffs against their goods, they were also giv ing substantial subsidies to theirSubsidisedfarmers. products of ten meant that American, Western European, and Japanese goods could sell cheaper than goods pro duced in Africa and the Caribbean. While this was a boon for the consumer, it unfortunately led to the destruction of many local industries in Africa and the Caribbean. The fail ure of many African and Caribbean governments to move beyond the histori cally assigned role of pro ducers of raw materials retarded and killed the in dustrialisation process in these two regions of the world. As the world advanc es rapidly towards the col lapse of the existing glob al order, Africa and the Caribbean are precariously positioned in the centre of a perfect economic storm. We have managed to eke out some of the benefits of industrialisation with out implementing the ele ments that make industri alisation durable. We have been able to wing it as long as our commodities and services flowed out and the money flowed into our econ omies. The novel coronavirus pandemic, the war in the Ukraine, and the new re alignment of nations, that are currently taking place, jeopardise the infrastruc ture of global trade. The in ability of Ukraine or Russia to move wheat out of the Black Sea region has dire consequences for nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, some of which are facing fam ine of a biblical proportion. The constriction of glob al trade and the disrup tion of the tourist indus try by the pandemic have led to a bleeding of foreign reserves in Africa and the Caribbean. Many African and Caribbean states are therefore facing the pros pects of outright national collapse.Ifthere ever was a time when African and Caribbean nations needed to put their heads, talents, and resources together, it is now. The post-globalisa tion world will be extreme ly Hobbesian. Conditions will be short, nasty, and brutish. Lifeboat ethics will be the prevailing norm among those nations for tunate enough to with stand the economic storm that is brewing. African and Caribbean nations will soon appreciate the wis dom of some of our great est thinkers, who warned us that we will either learn how to swim together or we will all drown separately. The success of the STEM Guyana Team over the years is yet another example of what our young people could achieve once they are provided with the necessary opportunities. After years of success, the team has now led to the expansion of the programme across Guyana, as was announced by President Dr Irfaan Ali on Monday. The way the Guyana team has performed over the years has shown what can be done once persons are able to band together and, more importantly, represent their country well at such a high-level competition. The success of Guyana’s team during the past four years is a perfect example of Guyanese ingenuity and creativity. It shows that, in spite of the many challenges at home and the sometimes-negative perceptions persons usually have of Guyanese, our young people can still rise to the challenge and be counted among some of the leaders in the various fields. For Guyana to compete against more than 160 countries over the years, although those countries have much experience in the field, is a tremendous achievement, and has served as motivation to others who have an interest in the so-called STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Certainly, the investments made over the years in improving performances in STEM subjects are beginning to show results. The importance of focusing on STEM education could never be overemphasised due to its importance to national development. Our leaders from both the past and current administrations have recognised the need to create more opportunities for our young people to further their studies in STEM subjects. Every student who has a desire to further their studies in STEM subjects should be afforded the opportunity to do so. We feel that once the necessary facilities are provided, such as labs etc, more young people would be drawn to these areas of study. Additionally, more students should be encouraged to focus on STEM subjects to advance their chances in the job market. This is necessary, as it would help them to become innovative. It would also help them to be equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to national development. Some persons see STEM as “hard subjects”. When one looks at the number of students graduating from the university, it is evident that more students are gravitating to the social sciences. However, if this trend continues, we would continue to see graduates coming out of the university for whom the job market would be severely limited. While there is need for qualified persons in the arts and humanities and other fields, there is also need for experts in science and technology; hence, more attention should be provided to encourage children who are gifted in science and technology to explore their passion. In essence, considering the national needs of the country, STEM is seen as sustainable. If students undertake STEM subjects, they can be assured of job opportunities not only here in Guyana, but in many other countries. The excellent performance of the STEM Guyana Team over the years should be celebrated. We support the call by the team for Government support, and commend President Dr Irfaan Ali for listening to the youths and committing to expanding the programme countrywide, and for his pledge, “We will support you.”

B y L enrod n zu L u B araka A s the great tribal war in Europe, com monly called World War II, ground to a halt, the American Government launched one of the most ambitious recovery plans ever devised to stabilise the global economy and help re boot European nations that had been devastated by the war — the Marshall Plan. The billions spent on the Marshall Plan served to buy the allegiance of European countries to the American empire, as well as guaranteed markets for America's industrial out put. With the economies of the major players in in ternational affairs in ru ins, the Americans stood to make a fortune in trade and finance. America's in dustrial plant was intact, and Europe needed every thing, from wine to iodine. Built into the Marshall Plan was a vision for the creation of stable demo cratic countries that would cooperate and trade, rather than try to kill each other at every opportunity. The US, therefore, committed itself to footing the bill for the Marshall Plan, and pro viding the military support needed to safeguard global trade.

A large hedge of thorns soon grew round the palace, and every year it became higher and thicker; till at last the old palace was surrounded and hidden, so that not even the roof or the chimneys could be seen. But there went a report through all the land of the beautiful sleeping Briar Rose (for so the king’s daughter was called): so that, from time to time, several kings’ sons came, and tried to break through the thicket into the palace. This, however, none of them could ever do; for the thorns and bushes laid hold of them, as it were with hands; and there they stuck fast, and died wretchedly. After many, many years there came a king’s son into that land: and an old man told him the story of the thicket of thorns; and how a beautiful palace stood behind it, and how a wonderful princess, called Briar Rose, lay in it asleep, with all her court. He told, too, how he had heard from his grandfather that many, many princes had come, and had tried to break through the thicket, but that they had all stuck fast in it, and died. Then the young prince said, “All this shall not frighten me; I will go and see this Briar Rose.” The old man tried to hinder him, but he was bent upon going. Now that very day the hundred years were ended; and as the prince came to the thicket he saw nothing but beautiful flowering shrubs, through which he went with ease, and they shut in after him as thick as ever. Then he came at last to the palace, and there in the court lay the dogs asleep; and the horses were standing in the stables; and on the roof sat the pigeons fast asleep, with their heads under their wings. And when he came into the palace, the flies were sleeping on the walls; the spit was standing still; the butler had the jug of ale at his lips, going to drink a draught; the maid sat with a fowl in her lap ready to be plucked; and the cook in the kitchen was still holding up her hand, as if she was going to beat the boy.

St Cuthbert’s Mission gets internet service

Police Sergeant Dion Bascom

In its aim to provide con nectivity across Guyana, Digicel, on Monday, launched its LTE services to the people of St Cuthbert's Mission — an Amerindian community once living on lit tle to no internet/mobile con nection.Dating back all the way to 2014, a proposal was made to Digicel to improve the con nectivity in the community, according to former Toshao Luke"I,Simon.asToshao then, sub mitted a letter of proposal to Digicel, to upgrade the com munication signal in the com munity," Simon said during small remarks at the launch ing Now,ceremony.eight years later, the people of St Cuthbert's Mission will be able to enjoy internet connectivity like most of Guyana, through Digicel's services.Months after the Dr Irfaan Ali-led Government took of fice in 2020, Guyana’s tele communications sector was liberalised. Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips had announced that Commencement Orders had been issued, bringing into force the Telecommunications Act 2016 and the Public Utilities Commission Act 2016. This liberalisation paved the way for many service pro viders in Guyana to expand their reach across the nation. St Cuthbert’s Mission is just one of many hinterland com munities to receive internet and mobile connectivity. Just a week ago, Digicel Guyana launched its LTE service in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).“Withthe launch of this service, we now cover 98 per cent of the population. And I think even more important ly for us, we’re at 90 per cent population coverage in terms of LTE services. Our plan for the rest of the year, in terms of the mobile service, is to up grade LTE services across the communities and we want to get to 96 per cent by the end of the year,” Digicel Guyana’s Chief Executive Officer Gregory Dean revealed during his Digicelremarks. Guyana has planned to spend US$22.6 million ($4.5 billion) to up grade and expand its 4G LTE network, aiming to increase its coverage in the country. It was reported that major upgrades are on the table for Regions One (Barima-Waini), Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo). Currently, the company is completing works on its services at Eteringbang, Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni).Prime Minister Phillips, who is a frequent visitor to the people of St Cuthbert’s Mission, said that he is elat ed for the community to be fi nally receiving stable connec tivity that would allow them to browse the internet, make calls locally and internation ally and also study online – a growing learning medium in this technological era. “Not only can you be at home and make a call that is clearer to any part of the world, you can get on the in ternet, and not only for fun, not only for social media surf ing but also for education. Education for the children. Education for the parents who are now focused on your ca reers, but at the same time you want to advance your ed ucation. So, you could be at home, you could sign up for a project, you know we have the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) and then there are other opportunities outside of Guyana,” the Prime Minister said. “This is the transforma tion, as a Government, that we’re talking about. We call it accelerated development. We call that transformative de velopment. I assure you that the Government will continue to work with Digicel and oth er service providers to ensure that we bridge the digital di vide.”In terms of spectrum, he revealed that discussions are ongoing to facilitate the sec tor’s expansion by making more spectrums available to service providers.

…them milk Milk’s been a staple of human diet for eons – even though, with folks being “lactose intolerant”, it suggests it was a late-acquired source of protein. You gotta domesticate cattle to milk them. Ever tried milking a wild cow?? Thought not!! Anyhow, here, in Guyana, it wasn’t till indentured Indians were brought here to work on the sugar plantations - after the Africans had been freed - that they replicated their “cow-minding” culture to sell fresh milk to the rest of the community. Early on, especially in Georgetown, they earned a notorious reputation for “watering down” the milk – with trench water!! It might seem strange today, but those milk sellers soon gravitated from the plantations surrounding Georgetown – like Ruimveldt and Bel Air – into villages like Kitty and Campbellville!! Imagine those now upscale areas as milk-producing farms!! Anyhow, after the PNC slid into office in 1964, they came up with the promise “free milk and cassava”!! and decided to enter the big leagues to produce both. Now, your Eyewitness isn’t going to get into the cassava fiasco – remember Rodney’s aphorism about everything Burnham touches turns into ****?! But with several proposals to make us milk sufficient on the table, he thought it might be useful to look into what happened to the PNC’s grandiose milk plan. Yes…Burnham was full of big plans –among other things!! Trouble was he and his Government could never execute those plans!! Dreamers, not “doers”, that’s what they were!! At the time, most milk was produced on small farms on the coast, and transportation was organised to the Milk Pasteurization Plant in Georgetown. Your Eyewitness can still remember those big aluminium milk containers lined up on the roadsides waiting for the “milk truck”!! But the PNC decided they’d have milk production centralised – following the Russians’ dekulakization? – at a 4000-acre farm at Moblissa on the Linden Highway. All it accomplished was destroying the coastal milk production – even as Moblissa collapsed!! Part of the problem was the grass was in very sandy soils, and as the cattle grazed, they ingested sand with the grass!! Ruminate on that!!! Anyhow, the Milk Pasteurization Plant was reducing to reconstituting imported powered milk!! In the 1980s, Government-owned GuySuCo started diversifying, and went into milk as a new product. They established dairy farms at Liliendaal and Versailles, and merged all the milk production into one massive failure, called LIDCO!! One of its directors later wangled the entire enterprise into his own “private” hands!! So, what about the two milk projects we’re hearing about?? Well, it’s good that both are privately-funded!! In one of them, DDL’s thinking of Moblissa, but announced that the cattle won’t be grazing, but be fed in pens. They must’ve learnt about the sand!! …the UN aid industry There’s the suggestion that all wasn’t kosher with the Coalition PNC Government doling out a billion-dollar rental agreement with a private citizen to consolidate all the UN Agencies servicing us in one building. Now, you know your Eyewitness’s reflexive response to such claims – we’re all by nature “bent”, so that we should check out every imputation of crookedness. And we should expect politicians to get on their high horses and feign indignation!! But whether there’s thiefin’ or not – and more likely than not there will be!! – shouldn’t we question if the benefits we’re getting from these UN types justify the big bucks we’re springing for their posh offices? After all, we’re already paying our dues to the UN, aren’t we?? And part of that subsidises the personal rentals for the UN staff who live here. There’s a “Standard Rental Subsidy” they get, which amounts to “80% of portion of rent exceeding the individual rental subsidy threshold; Up to max. 40% of rent.” Poverty pimps? …frenzy There’s a feeding frenzy in social and other media over the spectacular claims made by one detective sergeant over cover-ups and other corrupt practices going on in the Police Force. Your Eyewitness is just surprised if anyone out there’s surprised!!

All of that would have been put into place. That is why it is a long pro cess. We’re trying to make it as easy as possible.”

The Human Services and Social Security Ministry commenced distribution of the Special Needs Children Fund oneoff 100,000 cash grant, in which some 5000 children are slated to benefit. Recipients received their monies from Minister Vindhya Persaud at the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre. The Minister told media operatives that they would have collaborated with the Health Ministry and National Commission for Persons with Disabilities to formulate a list of recip ients. “Each parent or guardian would be collecting $100,000 from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. This is a commitment be cause since I have been there, we have been work ing with persons within that community and it adds onto other initiatives, where for over a year, we have been providing people with free support aids.”

Meanwhile, Theresa Nelson detailed that the money she received would assist in purchasing a wheel chair for her grandson. “He doesn’t walk and he doesn’t talk. The grant that I got would help because I does have to take a taxi any where I take him, to the clin ic or hospital…This would help to boost the situation up. Right now, his walker is getting small. I have to get a wheelchair for him.”

Additionally, Reshauna Long shared that her child is living with autism. As a parent, she said it is difficult to manage and take care of her child. Now with the cash grant, she relayed that it can be used to pay for treat ment. “Sometimes, you don’t know what the child wants and it’s a guessing game. He also gets frustrated a lot because he cannot express himself…I am thankful for it because we recently had him enrolled in behavioural therapy and it would help a great lot in assisting us to pay for that.”

Clothes vendor’s killer appeals ‘severe’ life sentence

Dead: Purcell Moore

Minister Vindhya Persaud handing over the grant to recipients Kevin Persaud, one of two men who confessed to fatal ly shooting clothes vendor Purcell Moore during a rob bery at Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) in 2017, is seeking to have his life sen tence set aside. Persaud, 22, called “Boyce”, and his co-accused, 22-year-old Selwyn Dawson, called “Crack”, were ar raigned in June 2021 for the murder of Moore, commit ted on December 20, 2017. Midway through their tri al before Justice Sandil Kissoon in the Demerara High Court, they had opted to plead guilty to the less er offence of manslaughter, and the Judge had instruct ed the 12-member jury to return a formal verdict of guilty of manslaughter for both men. On June 14, 2021, both Persaud and Dawson were sentenced to life im prisonment, with the possi bility of being paroled after 15 years. In August 2021, Dawson filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal against his sen tence, contending that it was severe in all circum stances of the case. Then, in February, Persaud also appealed against his sen tence on grounds similar to Dawson’s. The Notice of Appeal was filed on his be half by Defence Counsel DexterMoore,Todd.40, a father of two, was shot dead on December 20, 2017 a short distance from his parents’ home at Old Road, Craig, EBD by three men, who relieved him of his gold chain. Moore had arrived in Guyana from French Guiana two weeks prior to his demise, to cel ebrate Christmas with his family. Justice Sandil Kissoon, in sentencing the convicts, had reprimanded them for the callous crime. “Members of society ought to be free to move about…whether in the precinct of the business community in downtown Georgetown, in their neigh bourhood, or their homes…,” the Judge had said. Considering the serious nature and prevalence of the offence, Justice Kissoon had pointed out, the sentence of the court must not only fit the dastardly act, but also serve as a deterrent. During their sentenc ing hearing, the convict ed killers had begged the Judge for leniency. Persaud, in a short statement to the court, had said, “I am sor ry for the wrong things we did. And forgive us for the wrong things.” Dawson, on the other hand, had this to say: “I am very sorry for my mistake and sinful act. I am asking for forgiveness… please have mercy on us, and be lenient.” (G1)

The intention is to influence the younger population to be active, eat nutritiously and practice other healthy hab its. “If you start reducing risk factors earlier in life, you can prevent a lot of chronic, non-communicable diseases later on in life. If someone becomes obsess during their teenage years and they have not been exercising or eat ing the wrong foods, you can expect that person to have chronic non-communicable diseases quite early.”

In a Notice of Appeal filed on his behalf by Attorney-atLaw Dexter Todd, the con victed rapist/killer has no tified the Court of Appeal of his desire to appeal the sentence imposed by Justice Sewnarine-Beharry on the ground that it is “too severe in all circumstances of the It was reported that the girl, then 16, was walking home from a friend’s birth day party that night when she noticed a heavily tint ed car driving behind her. Arthur, whose face was cov ered, came out of the car and attacked her with a knife. While running away from him, she tripped and fell onto the roadway. This had given Arthur the opportunity to drag her into the bushes, where he had attempted to pull off her underwear. The victim had managed to raise an alarm, but Arthur, in retaliation, had dealt her one blow to her head with the knife he was carrying, and had de manded that she give him what he wanted. He had then slashed her on the forehead with the knife, and raped her without using a condom. After com mitting the act, he asked her if she had any valuables, be fore making good his escape. He was later arrested and identified by the victim, who is now 24, as the man who had raped her. She had been able to identify him by the presence of several iden tification marks, including a scar on his abdomen. In the end, Arthur was sentenced to 13 and one-half years on the rape charge, and 18 months in prison on the assault charge. the sen tences will run concurrently. However, the 13-year sentence will take effect only after he completes serv ing the 15-year sentence for manslaughter.Meanwhile, Arthur was sentenced to 15 years in prison for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s husband to death in 2018. Initially in dicted for the capital offence of murder, Arthur opted last year to plead guilty to a man slaughter charge, admitting that, on May 10, 2018, he un lawfully killed 40-year-old taxi driver Claude De Jonge, also known as “Sonno”, of Linden.Itwas reported that De Jonge was stabbed to death while at the home of his girl friend, who reportedly once shared a relationship with Arthur. Another issue on the agenda has been the reduc tion of teenage pregnan cy cases. These efforts have seen collaboration with the Education Ministry, as well as international organisa tions like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). “We’re working with them to reduce teenage pregnancy. When a young girl gets pregnant, it can be disruptive to their edu cation and to their further development. This is one area that the Ministry has been working closely with the Education Department in trying to reduce teenage pregnancy,” he noted. (G12)

The man who had raped and assault ed an underage girl as she walked home from a friend’s birthday party is challenging his 13 and a half years’ prison sentence by ar guing that it is “too severe”. The Health Ministry will be introducing a programme to offer basic health services at the school level, in its aim to re duce learning loss in the ed ucationHealthsystem.Minister, Dr Frank Anthony pointed out on Monday that children are unable to perform to their best ability sometimes, due to various medical condi tions such as hearing im pairment or some form of disability. Once it is correct ed early, a significant degree of learning loss can be pre vented.“The idea is that at dif ferent points in the life of a child, we’d be able to do screening for certain things. We have a package of ser vices that we will be de veloping, where we’re go ing to screen this child and that would include, they get an eye test, oral exam ination, check their hearing and some other basic things. Once we do that, if we detect children with these types of challenges, we will be able to fix it,” he shared. This package of services is currently being developed. It will be introduced within the next few months. “We’re planning to do it just before you come into primary school and as you leave primary to go into sec ondary to screen again. Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony on Monday expressed that vaccination trends against COVID-19 have plateaued, especially in the younger age categories. As he was delivering the COVID update, the Health Minister expressed concerns over stagnant vaccination numbers, fearing that it can lead to higher infections. “The trend has actually plateaued and we are hop ing that more persons would be interested in getting vac cinated. I believe that with vaccination, even if you get vaccinated, it is going to protect you. Unfortunately, not a lot of people have been coming to our vacci nation sites to get vaccinat ed. That’s very worrying be cause if people don’t protect themselves, they can get in fected and some of them are going to have the more se vere form of COVID,” Dr Anthony relayed. In Guyana, 35,495 first doses or 48.7 per cent of the 12 to 17 age group has been covered. Second doses account for 25,986 doses or 35.6 per cent. A fraction of persons suf fering from the severe form of COVID are usually hos pitalised and some may even die. In this light, the Minister urged parents to get involved and encourage their children to take the shots.“We keep trying to en courage persons to get vacci nated. Unfortunately, we’re not seeing huge numbers of young people. I think the adult population, the par ents, have to get involved. They have to encourage their children, bring their children to the site to be vac cinated. If you’re under 18, we would not do the vac cines without parental per mission.” In the five to 11 age group, the Health Ministry has administered 7332 first doses or 7.2 per cent; along with 2397 second doses or 2.3 per cent. For adults, there is a cov erage of 435,469 or 86.8 per cent first doses; and 345,139 second doses or 67.3 per cent. Meanwhile, there is an uptake of over 71,700 boost er doses. The central bank in China, the world’s largest crude importer, cut lending rates to revive demand as data showed the economy slowing unexpectedly in July, with factory and retail activity squeezed by Beijing’s zero-COVID policy and a property crisis. The country’s refinery output slipped to 12.53 million barrels per day (bpd), its lowest since March 2020, government data showed. ING bank cut its forecast for China’s 2022 GDP growth to 4 per cent, down from a previous projection of 4.4 per cent, and said a further downgrade was possible. Brent crude open interest this month is down 20 per cent from August last year. “Open interest is still falling, with some (market players) not interested in touching it because of volatility. That is, in my view, the reason resulting in higher volumes to the downside,” UBS oil analyst Giovanni Staunovo said, adding that the trigger for the drop on Monday was weak Chinese data.Oil is generally priced in US dollars, so a stronger greenback makes the commodity more expensive to holders of other currencies. Talks to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal were also in focus on Monday. Oil supply could rise if Iran and the United States accept an offer from the European Union, which would remove sanctions on Iranian oil exports, analysts said. Iran will respond by midnight on Monday to the European Union’s “final” draft text to save a 2015 nuclear deal, its Foreign Minister said, calling on the United States to show flexibility to resolve three remaining issues. A damaged oil pipeline component that disrupted output at several offshore US Gulf of Mexico platforms was repaired late Friday, prompting oil producers to reactivate some of the halted production, a Louisiana official said last week.“Supply disruptions at several offshore oil platforms within the Gulf coast region that added to last week’s price strength appear to have stabilised for now with output resuming,” said Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch and Associates LLC in Galena, Illinois. After a celebrated com mentary career span ning 45 years, Ian Chappell has decided to put down his microphone. The 78-year-old former Australia captain, widely ad mired for his incisive views on the game and his forth right manner of express ing them, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he had been contemplating the de cision for a while. "I remember the day when I knew I'd had enough of playing cricket," he said. "I looked at the clock and it was five past 11 on a day of play, and I thought, 'S**t, if you're clock-watching at that time, I have to go'. So, when it comes to commentary, I've been thinking about it. “I had a minor stroke a few years back, and I got off lucky. But it just makes ev erything harder. And I just thought, with all the travel and, you know, walking up stairs and things like that, it's all just going to get hard er. Channel Nine and Chappell enjoyed a long re lationship, but not one with out the occasional fraught moment."Kerry (Packer, the media mogul who owned Channel Nine) wanted to sack me a couple of times," Chappell said. "He used to get the s***s about one-day cricket, because that was his baby, and I might have said something about one-day cricket. With Kerry, it was just like a storm - you'd let it blow over till the next one came."When asked how he would like to be remem bered as a commentator, Chappell replied: "It's up to other people to decide what they think of me; and some will think I've been alright, some will think I've been a pr**k. That doesn't bother me one Chappellbit." has had to en dure health issues in recent years, including a diagno sis of skin cancer, but he re mained a sharp and fierce ly independent voice on the game in broadcast and print. Captain of the “Harbour Master”, Neil Cooper, has said that Anderson Peters was in fact the aggressor in last week’s highly publicised incident on the vessel that led to the ar rest of six men involved. “It was an attack on the Harbour Master crew…not Anderson Peters,” Cooper said in a statement issued on Saturday.Thenarrative all along was that the crew had as saulted Peters, who won his second World title in the Javelin in Eugene last month, and had then thrown him overboard, but Cooper has said this couldn’t be fur ther from the truth. “On August 10, the crew and I had just successfully sailed the Recovery cruise. I instructed the deckhand team to begin preparing the boat for our next cruise, which was scheduled for 8 o’clock. After some time, I went to check on the crew, and saw them asking a group of young men to leave the ship. My team tried encour aging the men to leave, but again the group (who I didn’t know at the time included World Champion Anderson Peters) refused to leave the ship.“Anderson began to get aggressive and pace up and down the ramp. I ap proached him and asked him to leave. He then cursed at me, disrespected my nation ality, and insulted me for being Trinidadian. I asked Anderson four times to leave the vessel, and each time he responded with aggression and cursed at me.” The captain further stat ed, “What happened next is where the issue start ed. While on the ramp, I in formed Anderson that I was the captain of the ship. He responded by cursing at me and throwing water in my face. I tried avoiding further altercation by walking away from him, off the ramp and back onto the main deck. When I got there, I real ised a member of Anderson’s clan had assaulted my cruise manager Benji by slapping him in his face. My crew tried once again to get the men off the boat, but they continued to refuse with aggression. All men continued to curse at us. Anderson then spat at me, and began throwing punches at my“Myface.crew and I did not start the confrontation, Anderson and his group did. As any team would, we de fended ourselves from the ongoingCooperattack.”thenoutlined how Peters ended up in the wa ter.“The brawl eventually moved to the ramp. With all the scuffling, Anderson lost his balance and fell into the water. No one threw him into the water! It’s upsetting to see reports that my crew and I threw him into the water. We were relieved to see that Anderson was pulled up out of the water and was safe, but even then, he continued to be aggressive towards us and refused to leave the boat. “Eventually, the Police arrived on the boat, and a mob gathered outside saying that we attacked Grenada’s National Hero. “In my profession, I make an oath to protecting all souls on every vessel I captain. I would never intentionally harm another human. I un derstand Grenada’s love for Anderson Peters, but I be lieve the public should know the truth about the situa tion,” he added. (Sportsmax)

Tagenarine Chanderpaul has made a masterful century, the highlight of the fourth and final day of the second four-day first-class A Team Test match. The left-hander batted resolutely to end on 109 not out as West Indies A were at 277-5 in reply to Bangladesh A’s 3009 declared at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia. West Indies started the final day on 43-2, and needed to bat well to avoid any hiccups. They did exactly that, led by Chanderpaul, who was at the crease for just under seven hours, faced 337 balls, and hit nine boundaries. He added 120 for the fourth wicket with fellow left-hander Alick Athanaze, who played several exciting strokes as he raced to 82 off 121 balls, which included seven boundaries. Before that, captain Joshua Da Silva (37) and keeper Tevin Imlach (21) also kept the scoreboard ticking. It was the third firstclass century of the year for Chanderpaul, as he followed up on the great form he had shown in the regional firstclass tournament. Back in May, he made 184 against Jamaica Scorpions, and 140 not out against Barbados Pride for the Guyana Harpy Eagles. Speaking after the match, Da Silva said he was happy with the team’s performances in both the first and second “Tests” – which both ended in draws. He also praised Chanderpaul for his heroics, which included a top-score of 49 off 120 balls in the first fourday contest last week. “Today especially, Brandon (Chanderpaul) showed his batting ability as well as his immense powers of concentration. He fought really hard, and it was really good to watch him. He did exactly what he does in first-class cricket, and we followed his lead. I was there at the crease with him for a while, and it was actually good to bat alongside him and learn a few things from him as well…“Was also great the way Alick (Athanaze) played, with such freedom, as he also batted very well,” Da Silva said. “It was a good series for us, even though the rain interrupted a few times. I was also happy with the way the bowlers performed. They kept running in and bowled well, and always kept the Bangladesh batsmen under pressure. They got the rewards for the hard work.”

Tagenarine Chanderpaul standing tall with 109 not out Fung “appreciative” to everyone for making CAC journey successful

By TimoThy Jaikarran Quite a stir has been caused around the country for the past few weeks because Guyana’s very own Rosanna Fung was able to bag three gold medals and her Pro Rank Card at the CAC Bodybuilding Championships held recently in Barbados. For her part, Fung has said that bagging gold at CAC was a surreal experience for her, and she is grateful to everyone who has made her journey a success. Fung bagged gold in the Junior Wellness, Under-160cm Wellness, and Overall Wellness categories, which were inclusive of her Pro Rank Card. In an exclusive interview with this publication, Fung was asked how she felt at attaining gold, and she responded, “Claiming gold at CAC was a dream come true. I’m still at a loss for words on the whole experience. I feel like the second they called my name for the overall and the pro card, I floated up into clouds, and I haven’t been able to come down. “The entire experience was magical and extremely well-coordinated, and I had a wonderful time with all of my teammates. It’s always a pleasure sharing the stage with such driven and inspiring athletes. Nothing beats experiencing new cultures and making new friends in sports.” In terms of her package, the talented Fung explained that she was very confident in the physique she was presenting on stage, that it was going to be what the judges were looking for in the Wellness category. She also noted that it is her hope to inspire other girls and women out there to stop holding themselves back, and to achieve their health and fitness goals in a sustainable and more long-term fashion.Fung relayed that it is her goal to teach young women that they should not be afraid of muscle. “Your body is beautiful, and you want to keep it as healthy as you can for as long as you can, so you can keep doing the things you love,” she posited. Commanding a regal presence anywhere, Fung has expressed gratitude to her boyfriend Tariq Dakhill, who is also her coach; who has been there for her “through thick and thin”. She has said that without him she could not achieve this feat. She has also expressed gratitude to her family members, who have supported her every step of the way; and to her sponsors, who made the trip possible.“The high point for me is definitely going to be that tub of Häagen-Dazs ice cream that I chowed down after the show, while sitting on the balcony of our hotel room overlooking the beach, reflecting on the fact that I had just won my pro card. I definitely feel I need to come in a bit leaner and more defined than my last physique. I also feel I can develop a bit more in my back and shoulder region, and my glutes and hamstrings can pop a bit more,” she shared. Fung was sponsored by BM Soat, Giftland, Trans Pacific Auto, Prem’s Electrical, Sassy Styles, Fitness Express, Bad Monkey, Raould Jewelry and The Breakers Palm Beach. Adding to her many accolades, Fung is now a threetime gold medalist at CAC 2022; winner of the Miss Bikini Novice 2019 Championship; winner of the Seniors 2019 Championship; the person placing second at the Stage of Champions 2019 event; winner of the 2020 edition of the Resilience Bodybuilding Championship; and the person who copped bronze in the CAC Championship in 2021 in El Salvador, among other things.

The long lines of traffic on the West Coast Berbice Public Road on Sunday perfectly epitomised the craze that arose for horseracing following a COVID-19 pandem ic-induced break. All roads led to the Rising Sun Turf Club, where the pounding of hooves and photo finishes ignited the track for the Guyana Cup 2022. When the literal dust had settled, the likes of ‘Alado’, ‘Early Bird’ and ‘Colour of Sacrifice’ were the big winners on Sunday evening. That was a look at the moment that most fans had been waiting for. Nothing short of a photo finish was good enough for the day’s feature race, the Banks DIH Guyana Cup, where in Alado overtook Wild Texas Tom on the back stretch to cham pion the anticipated mile-long race. That final race was filled with thrills even before the start, as ‘Vera’s Finally’ put on a show before settling down enough to make it into her stall. Alado and Wild Texas Tom were neck-to-neck along the back straight, before Alado pulled ahead on the turn. Manoeuvring the turn well was Wild Texas’ jockey, to come level with his opponent. However, with one furlong to go, even tual Champion Jockey Colin Ross inspired Alado’s strong fin ish for the coveted Guyana Cup. “The weather had us really bad, and we were in fear of 2019, what happened. We worked really hard to get here to day. We only had two weeks to prepare the ground, prepare the horses. It was very hard; we weren’t sure if the horses would be fit. The jockey and the team, we couldn’t have done it without them,” Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr of Jumbo Jet Stables shared after winning big. On the other hand, Champion Jockey Ross related, “It’s a good feeling to win it the fourth time, you know. It’s a real good feeling, because we working real hard for the past two months, real hard for this race here. The weather wasn’t good, and the the last two week we had the good weather and push in the lil work, and we got here today. “When I reach by the three furlongs, the last three fur longs, I said I got it,” Ross said, explaining at which point he knew he had the victory in the bag. The Val’s Construction Sprint Classic brought similar ex citement, as jockey Luis Pinhero steered Early Bird to his first win in Guyana. Early Bird galloped past the finish line ahead of Converter, Looking to Heaven and Regal Intention respec tively. At the one-furlong mark, it was still anybody’s race, but a confident Pinhero began celebrating 50 metres out, while Converter’s jockey whipped and whipped at his animal, but his proddings were to no avail, as Early Bird stayed true to his name and flew across the finish line.

The other one-mile race was powered by Associated Construction Services, and witnessed Colour of Sacrifice leav ing it all on the track for the victory. Like a Million, Amazing Grace and Black Time were no match for the winner, but settled for second to fourth respec tively.Owner and trainer of Colour of Sacrifice, Trinidadian National Shaun Mohamed, after getting a taste, is looking for ward to more of the horseracing action in Guyana. P“This preparation was well over three months back. We come to this race with a lot of problems with this horse. As you could see, after the race, he didn’t really hold up that well, you understand. But we’re thankful for everything that we got here today,” Mohamed revealed. He went on to add, “We didn’t have much time on Guyana track, we only arrived here Monday, we had a few days in Corentyne and we had 2-3 days of training. We didn’t get much training.“Wehave Memories in the last race, which is the Guyana Cup. According to how Memories performs, we’ll be coming back again for the President’s Cup,” Mohamed said about his intentions to return to Guyana for competition. In other individual prizes, Jumbo Jet Stable’s Nasrudeen Mohamed was adjudged the best trainer, as the Sunday races were a Thesuccess.entertainment to follow saw thousands of fans staying late at the Rising Sun Turf Club for the packed roster.
