Peacemaker stabbed to death A

D Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown businessman was on Sunday evening stabbed to death in front of his business place as he attempted to make peace between a man and his reputed wife.

Dead is 48-year-old Godfrey Phillips, of Lot 3028 D Field Sophia. He was reportedly stabbed once to his left abdomen and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Based on reports received, the now dead man had already closed his business for the night when he heard an argument. As he ventured out, he saw the suspect arguing with his reputed wife and cautioned them about their behaviour.

reportedly became annoyed, whipped out a knife, and inflicted the fatal blow on Phillips.

After committing the act, the suspect and his reputed wife fled the scene, but the Police confirmed that he

was later arrested and was being grilled about the heinous crime.

At the Turkeyen Police Station on Monday morning, Subrena Phillips, the dead man’s widow, related that she was at home on Sunday evening when she received a telephone call informing her that her husband was stabbed.

Without hesitation, she contacted her eldest daughter, who confirmed that her father had been stabbed and had been rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

She ventured out and on her way to the hospital in the company of her nephew, she received another call – this time from her youngest daughter who informed her that her father was dead.

“I still turn up at the hospital and I saw he was al-

ready wrapped … I unzipped the holder and I saw his eyes and mouth open …,” she related with tear-filled eyes.

She related to Guyana Times what she knew of the incident, “I heard that he went to part some fight between a man and his reputed wife, and he went and tell them to calm down, that it ain’t looking good and is then the man pull out and push the knife.”

The suspect, she added, hailed from Kitty, Georgetown, and left the scene after committing the act. The distraught woman stated that she did not know the suspect, but he was known to her children.

She told this publication that she and her husband had been married for the past 24 years, and had three children.

At the scene, the man’s eldest daughter pointed out the spot where her father collapsed and died.

She related that at the time of the stabbing incident, people were in the vicinity of the shop and saw what took place, but they were afraid to speak out.

This newspaper understands that a young woman who witnessed the stabbing incident has since given a statement to the Police as they continue their investigations.

Phillips’ body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Home to await a post-mortem.

Division (LindenKwakwani) Police on Saturday destroyed a marijuana camp at 19 Miles, Millie’s Hideout as lawmen continued a nonstop drug eradication exercise at Upper Demerara River.

Ranks swooped down on the location, where they unearthed two large bags containing leaves, seeds, and stems of cannabis.

The drug was later weighed and amounted to 12.7 kilogram (28 lbs). Some 10 feet away, a quantity of clothing and food items were discovered; however, no one was found at the location.

Over the past few weeks, Police in the Division have destroyed several illegal marijuana fields and camps.

Two weeks ago, at 10 Miles, Millie’s Hideout, ranks discovered several fields totalling nine acres which contained 9000 cannabis plants, ranging from two feet to eight feet in height. They also discovered 300 kilos of dried cannabis and two nurseries containing 6500 seedlings. Seven camps containing groceries, kitchen utensils, clothing, bed, hammocks and food-

stuff were also discovered.

The fields were reportedly cut down and burnt. No one was discovered inside the camps.

Also, recently at 8 Miles, Millie’s Hideout, several acres of marijuana had destroyed. This included a two-acre farm containing approximately 2500 cannabis plants which measured one to four feet in height and were estimated to weigh approximately 675 kg. A nursery containing some 3000 marijuana plants was also destroyed along with four makeshift camps with two hammocks, a mattress. and a quantity of kitch-

en utensils and groceries.

Additionally, a quantity of dried cannabis, estimated to weigh about 200 kg was destroyed. Approximately seven miles away from the location, another one-anda-half-acre marijuana farm with about 1500 cannabis plants was destroyed. The plants measured between two and five feet in height and weighed an estimated 225 kg. Also destroyed was another nursery with approximately 1500 marijuana plants, along with a makeshift camp which contained dried cannabis estimated to weigh about 100 kg.

uyana Elections C o m m i s s i o n (GECOM) Chairman, retired Justice James Patterson is expected to officially return to work today; however, despite all the delays and the urgency of dealing with election matters, there is nothing on the agenda of today’s meeting to address these issues.

When contacted by Guyana Times, People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s GECOM Commissioner Robeson Been explained that electoral issues were completely absent from the agenda of the meeting today.

Instead, Benn noted that routine issues were scheduled to be discussed.

“We got an agenda (Monday) afternoon,” he said. “It was just a basic, standard agenda. I asked that those (electoral) items be discussed … the issue of the timing of General and Regional Elections and the question of the preparedness of GECOM to conduct elections within that timeframe.”

Benn explained that when he received the agenda, he immediately made enquiries and asked that issues relating to GECOM’s preparedness to conduct elections be discussed. Up to press time, Benn had not received a response. “(The agenda included) basic things like the call to order, the minutes of the last meeting, reports from committees, reports from the central executive. Nothing new, just the standard agenda …. I sent out my response to the agenda, asking that those (electoral) items be included on the agenda.”

Even though the GECOM Chairman will be returning today, there is still no word on when he will meet with Government and Opposition Chief Whips Amna Ally and Gail Teixeira. When contacted by this publication, Ally was asked if she had received confirmation of a meeting.

She responded in the negative. Teixeira and Ally have been trying to facilitate a meeting with GECOM for over two weeks now, but to no avail.

It was agreed at a meeting between Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo and President David Granger that the Chief Whips would be sent to ascertain GECOM’s readiness for elections. Since then the attempts by the Chief Whips to facilitate a meeting have been seemingly ignored.

GECOM Chief Elections Officer Keith Lowenfield has declined to meet with Teixeira and Ally, but has instead deferred to Patterson.

liamentary Opposition – the (PPP/C) – against the Government succeeded when former Alliance For Change (AFC) parliamentarian Charrandas Persaud broke ranks and made a conscience vote in favour of the motion.

With the Government’s defeat, the next steps are spelt out in the Constitution of Guyana. Article 106 (6) of the Constitution states: “The Cabinet including the President shall resign if the Government is defeated by the vote of a majority of all the elected members of the National Assembly on a vote of confidence.”

Meanwhile, clause 7 goes on to state that “Notwithstanding its defeat, the Government shall remain in office and shall hold an election within three months, or such longer period as the National Assembly shall by resolution supported by not less than two-thirds of the votes of all

the elected members of the National Assembly determine, and shall resign after the President takes the oath of office following the election.”

Since the passage of the motion; however, persons aligned with the coalition have sought to question the motion’s validity even as the vote has already been certified. These arguments formed part of the opinions presented to Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Barton Scotland in the hopes that he would reverse the

ruling. He refused to do so.

Amid calls to resign, Government has insisted it is going nowhere until elections are held. A court case was filed, in which an order was sought to, among other things, delay the elections until the court rules on the matter.

That and other related cases came up for hearing last Tuesday, but acting Chief Justice Roxane George committed to a ruling by the end of this month, while noting that such an order would be unnecessary.

Investing in early childhood development

A

ccording to findings from a published “The Lancet’s Series, Advancing Early Childhood Development: from Science to Scale”, an estimated 43 per cent – 249 million – of children under five in low- and middle-income countries are at an elevated risk of poor development due to extreme poverty and stunting.

The Caribbean regional launch of the series took place immediately following the 32nd Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) on Education, and was hosted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Secretariat.

The Series has once again made a strong case for Governments and other stakeholders to work towards designing and implementing effective policies and programmes and allocating the necessary resources to ensure early childhood development.

According to the authors of the Series, early childhood development interventions that promote nurturing care – health, nutrition, responsive caregiving, security and safety, and early learning – may cost very little, when combined with existing services such as health.

Sylvie Fouet, Representative of UNICEF-Guyana and Suriname, was quoted by Caricom as saying: “The science and economics are clearly on the side of investing in the first 1000 days of a child’s life. The cost of not doing so is higher. Children fall behind long before they set foot in school.”

There is, therefore, need for increased global commitment to early childhood development. The consequences of inaction impact not only present but future generations. In the Region, there is less public provisioning for early childhood education, especially for the 0-2 year age group, as opposed to the preschool years. For example, it was explained that the uneven funding distribution across sectors is striking; expenditure on pre-primary as a share of government expenditure on education is only 2.9 per cent compared to primary at 34.9 per cent and 40.3 per cent for secondary education.

One of the authors of the Lancet Series, Rafael PérezEscamilla, Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health, Director of the Office of Public Health Practice, and Director of the Global Health Concentration at the Yale School of Public Health, presented the research findings and recommendations to Ministers of Education from several Caricom Member States, as well as regional education officials at the COHSOD Meeting.

The Series authors propose several ways the global community can scale up support for early childhood development services; these include by: encouraging the adoption and implementation of policies to create supportive environments for families to provide nurturing care for young children; building capacity and strengthening coordination to promote early childhood development through existing health, nutrition, education, social, and child protection services; strengthening measurement and ensuring accountability for early childhood development services; increasing research; fostering global and regional leadership and action and expanding political will and funding through advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Guyana must be commended for placing the issue of early childhood development high on its national development agenda. The Government, through a US$1.7 million grant from the World Bank, launched its Early Childhood Development Project. The Project, which came as a result of intense discussions among early childhood educators and other relevant officials, is aimed at improving the emergent literacy and numeracy outcomes for children at the nursery level and primary Grade One in hinterland regions.

The first component of the Project caters for capacity building for nursery and Grade One teachers and is aimed at improving the quality of instruction and learning at the nursery and Grade One levels by strengthening teachers’ knowledge, particularly with regard to the implementation of new strategies for the development of emergent literacy and numeracy skills, through an in-service teacher training programme. The second component of the Project targets improved supply of teaching and learning materials.

The issue of early childhood development must be taken seriously by all stakeholders as research has shown that a child’s brain develops faster in the first two to three years than at any other time in life. It was proven that these early years are also a critical period of adaptability and responsiveness to interventions.

urkey's Foreign Minister on Monday stated that some Western countries are trying to cover up the murder of Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"We see how those, who speak of freedom of press in the world, cover this thing up when they see money," Mevlut Cavusoglu told a youth meeting in Istanbul.

Khashoggi, a contributor to The Washington Post, was killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Cavusoglu said that Turkey acted wisely in the case, adding that they were well-aware of the difficulties in shedding light on the murder.

"Now we have made preparations for an international probe in the coming days. We will take the necessary steps," he added.

Turkey has sought the extradition of Saudi citizens involved in the killing.

Ankara wants peace, stability in Syria

Stating that Turkey’s policy on Syria was clear, he added Ankara only wanted peace, tranquillity, stability and a political solution in war-torn Syria.

"We continue our quest for lasting peace in our neighbour," Cavusoglu said.

He also said that there were double standards and hypocrisy involved in the fight against terrorism, adding the US continued its support for the YPG/PKK terror group in Syria.

Cavusoglu said the terrorists who target Turkey at present could target others in the future.

"Today the target is Muslims.

Tomorrow it may be someone else," he said.

Khashoggi, who had self-exiled in 2017 and was living in the United States, was a regular contributor in America’s leading media house, Washington Post, and used to strongly criticise the policies of the powerful Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman (MbS).

His murder is seen as a political conspiracy to silence dissent. Khashoggi’s murder and the deafening silence of the US to pull up Riyadh have once again highlighted the growing intolerance towards those who criticise the establishment in both countries.

Security of those who choose to speak truth to power is of utmost importance.

A country prospers in real terms with the true application of freedom of expression, something which is evidently missing in Saudi Arabia, especially under MbS. The international community has, time and again, criticised his regime for crackdown on dissent, Khashoggi’s murder being the latest example. Interestingly, in spite of the US Senate resolution as well as CIA assessment blaming MbS for the murder, US President Donald Trump failed to take any definitive action against Riyadh, a crucial ally of America to counter Iran and Russia in the Middle East.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an has said that the order to kill Khashoggi had come from the highest level of Saudi Government and, there-

fore, has requested for an international inquiry. The UN chief Antonio Guterres has also argued for the credible investigation into this case to punish those who are guilty. However, the US appears to be wilfully ignoring the call for justice. As a result, the US is being accused of practising the double standard.

On the one hand, it never misses an opportunity to raise the issue of human rights violations in developing countries. On the other hand, it is silent on the serious issue of Khashoggi’s murder regardless of enough pieces of evidence suggesting the involvement of Riyadh.

It is a grave matter of human rights violation and highlights the increasing instances of attacks on media all over the world. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), 63 Journalists were killed, while 171 were imprisoned across the world in 2018. The increasing attacks on Journalists show the greater intolerance towards freedom of expression which is regarded as the cornerstone of humanity. On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists ( November 2), Eiffel Tower’s lights were turned off for one minute on the request of RSF to pay tribute to Khashoggi and other Journalists who were murdered for fulfilling their earnest duty of reporting.

The silence on such issues will only give unbridled powers and impunity to the perpetrators of the crime, which in turn will unleash havoc on the entire humanity. Security of those who choose to speak truth to power is of utmost importance and such matters need to be given a high priority at the local, national and international forums so that strict mechanisms can be developed to contain such crimes. If we fail to deliver justice to these Journalists (1010 Journalists have been killed since 20062017), the time would come when no serious reporting would be done and important cases of corruption, crimes and other vital issues would go unreported owing to fear amongst Journalists. Give Mr Ali a chance Dear Editor, The PPP selected their presidential candidate on Saturday, January 19, 2019, in the form of Mr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, a 38-year-old gentleman. The vote was 24 to 11 with all members of the PPP Central Committee voting. An overwhelming win for young Ali. Allow me to offer a few points for consideration on why I will support Mr Ali and give him a chance.

First, the PPP prides itself on its manifesto being the bedrock from which it will govern. It is almost a contract which the Party and the candidate commit to.

Experience shows that this manifesto is extremely important in forging the basis of its Government—I would expect a sweeping document which will address all issues including governance, constitutional reform, steps to improve transparency and attack corruption, economic reform, transformational projects, investment confidence, youth, infrastructure, etc. So, look out for what is in the manifesto and consid-

er this the bible under which the candidate will be expected to govern.

Second, Mr Ali is young.

In fact, his 15+ years in the leadership of the party, indicate that he was only 23 when he was already in a senior party position. Like any young, ambitious person, I expect that there is a certain level of ego. But with life, one matures. From the time the PPP left office in 2015, we have already seen how many of the past leaders have progressed, showing increasing levels of maturity that one would expect. No one is perfect. But certainly, when one views that political positions are temporary and that power is transitory, one has to understand that the will of the people is most important. Leadership is a burden of responsibility.

Former President Jagdeo, a visionary, has shown that like any young person, experience and maturity, brings a more balanced temperament. Few would dispute that the PPP leadership has been level-headed, pragmatic, focused on dealing with

issues, a marked level of respect and tolerance for all, etc. Maybe at the start one is rough around the edges but I would argue that within the PPP, there is a growing recognition of the importance of being in front when it comes to service to the people, humility, honesty and integrity. And just like the AFC no-confidence, a leader who ignores the party manifesto, can find they are back to elections. More recently, in the UK, Prime Minister May faced a no-confidence from within her own party and then again in the last week. So I expect that our PPP presidential candidate will display a growing level of maturity, dynamism and pragmatism for the times we live in. Give youth a chance.

Give the PPP a chance. Give Irfaan a chance.

Third, the PPP policy positions are already clear.

A massive rollback of taxes that has drained disposable income. A return of investor-friendly policies and engagements that will see massive investments from the Private Sector. It is a

fact that no new investment has materialised under the APNU+AFC Government.

The PPP left a Government with many investment projects lined up, large foreign exchange reserves, vast available loan resources at concessional rates, and an extremely strong macro-economy. Experience and capability have been proven by the PPP. The tide to change back to the PPP is evident, as the LGE showed with a 61 per cent win for the PPP vs a 34 per cent APNU and 4 per cent AFC. Fourth, the job of the Government is not simply up to the President. There is a team including Cabinet and some of the brightest technocrats that enable the job to be done. I have little doubt that the deliberations within the Central Committee that saw such a strong level of confidence in the youthful Irfaan Alli, was based on many of the key members of the Central Committee being part of a PPP Government and a clear commitment to inclusion and reaching across the

political divide. Stalwarts like Dr Luncheon and Gail Teixeira would have had an influence on the outcome of the candidate and are all likely to play a role alongside Anil Nandlall, Dr Frank Anthony, and Dr Vindhya Persaud.

So, give the PPP candidate a chance. Let him show what he can do. When he left Government, he was 35. Now he is 38. I recall when Dr Jagdeo assumed the presidency, he was even younger.

But under his youthful leadership, we experienced a rebuilding of the middle-class, a period of sustained economic growth, the low carbon development strategy and US$250 million from Norway, transformational projects such as the Berbice Bridge, and the Marriott Hotel (opened by President Ramotar), massive investments in all parts of the country including the Ogle Airport and the expansion of Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Of course, Dr Jagdeo started post-1992 as the Finance Minister and having to seek

the largest debt relief possible for a bankrupt country while borrowing prudently to rebuild the economy.

Today, Guyana is the envy of the world based on the PPP legacy. Coupled with rebuilding investor confidence, the PPP handed over a golden platter to APNU, who has squandered every good opportunity. So, Mr Ali and the PPP will need to take over where they left off—a new Demerara Bridge, the Amaila Falls, restarting the LCDS, re-opening the closed sugar estates, expanding housing, lowering interest rates, and returning the economy to one where all Guyanese will see growth in opportunities and disposable income in an open and free economy. Give Mr Ali a chance. And let’s not forget, all hands will be on deck including our General Secretary, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo. Capability, capacity, and experience will all be part of the PPP team.

GECOM Chair way too advanced in age to effectively serve

Dear Editor, The GECOM Chairman, Mr James Patterson initially made headlines when President Granger triggered widespread criticism by trampling standard democratic practices to appoint him to such a sensitive and demanding position.

The public not only complained about the immorality surrounding such an appointment, but they also griped over the fact that Mr Patterson is way too advanced in age to ef-

fectively serve. Mr Patterson is almost 90 years old and realistically, it would be difficult for him to be up to speed to serve in such a capacity.

The public has rightly viewed his appointment as a bad one with serious consequences for Guyana. But President Granger does not care a hoot.

President Granger’s interest lies solely in deriving political benefits from such an unfair transaction. What else?

Unsurprisingly, Mr Patterson is back again in

the headlines. This time, he is stalling election preparations and creating uncertainty at GECOM because he is on a prolonged sick leave. Many even feared that Mr Patterson is faking his illness to help APNU/PNC/AFC because Government has a slim chance of winning the elections if it were to be held in two months’ time. Guyanese must remember that President Granger has tremendous influence at GECOM because he appointed Mr Patterson. GECOM

can’t be independent. Amid such unreliable and frustrating circumstances, President Granger informed the nation that elections can only be held when GECOM is ready.

President Granger’s position is vague and unfair, only adding uncertainty and ignoring the problems at GECOM. GECOM may never be ready because its Chairman isn’t reporting for work. A date for the elections needs to be fixed because GECOM has to accommodate elections no lat-

er than is required by the Constitution.

Mr Patterson must drop his excuses and live up to his commitment to serve. And this means that at the very least, he must immediately show up for work or immediately resign. His actions are unreasonable and unfair. The clock is ticking.

In sum, this narrative exposes the undemocratic and dubious operating procedures routinely used by President Granger to trample his people

for political gains. Obviously, President Granger fails to connect the hefty price tag that comes with his leadership and how it effectively brought his Government down. With this situation on hand, Guyanese now have a chance to free themselves from such a leader at the polls. President Granger needs to play it fair. The world is watching. And GECOM needs to be ready in a timely manner.

Put Guyana 1st, focus on removal of this Govt WPO endorses Irfaan Dear Editor, Some people seem to feel that running a Government is a sole proprietor business – a one-man business – but this is so far from the truth.

It is a known fact that a Party goes into an election with a manifesto which sells the party to the electorate. If the party wins, then it is a team effort comprised of persons who should have the ability to deliver on those promises. In addition, there are many advisors who are strategically appointed to assist these persons. The presidential elect not only gives guidance but takes guidance.

In Guyana, the coalition and the new kids on the block with their handful of supporters, some claiming to be disgruntled PPP members and supporters, are hammering away at the election of Mr Irfaan Ali as the PPP’s presidential candidate, making their repetitive rounds of personal attacks while claiming that he is “Jagdeo’s third term”.

Bharrat Jagdeo has always been the focus of attack in and out of Office; his salary, his pension, his “mansion” as is claimed. Yet even the Prime Minister is now earn-

ing more than him and living the “Cadillac” lifestyle. This Government utilised great efforts and massive financial resources to ensure that he does not get a third term as President since they are mortally afraid of his sharp intellect and his topnotch statesmanship. The decision of the Caribbean Court of Justice did not deter or daunt his spirit. It must be recalled by Guyanese that after the PPP’s defeat by a one-seat majority he rose from the ashes like the proverbial Phoenix and began a political crusade that was unrelenting in exposing the corruption and thievery of the coalition. His weekly press conferences were just as eagerly looked forward to as “Days of Our Lives”!

Eventually, he strategised and orchestrated the downfall of the APNU/AFC Government; something which hardly anyone had believed would have been possible. Jagdeo’s relentless pursuit bore fruit and gave hope to the hopeless in this country which had begun to fall into the abyss of social and economic degradation. But while he did the Herculean task, some were waiting like the hyenas to partake from the kill

of the lion. A few of these were in the media headlines for all the wrong reasons! Now he is being vilified once again by those heartless opportunists who never even bat an eyelid for their country. But I know that it will never derail his focus of ensuring the good life for his people!

As I recall, when Donald Ramotar became the presidential candidate twice for the PPP, there were no cries, wails and gnashing of teeth.

He was not seen as the surrogate or puppet of Jagdeo.

He was acceptable because they knew that they could outmanoeuvre him at any time. In fact, they dubbed him the “Lame Duck”! The then Opposition took full advantage of this and Nagamootoo tabled a no-confidence motion which saw his Government’s downfall. Ramotar was the “perfect” opponent and now the coalition wants another one. However, when one listened to the debates and presentations of Irfaan Ali, it is evident that he has what it takes to not only run this country but to destroy the corruption posse and thwart the efforts of the APNU/AFC to bring down his Government if needs be. He has that cha-

risma, courage and competence and enough has been said about his achievements as a Minister. Let them call it what they want but Irfaan Ali is no Donald Ramotar and will never be an easy walkover!

Finally, as a member of the PPP, I am in total agreement with the election of any presidential candidate since I have full confidence in the ability of my Party to choose the best candidate.

The Central Committee has 35 potential candidates from which one must be chosen. When I was with the Alliance for Change I had no problem with either Trotman or Ramjattan being the presidential candidate. When I joined the PPP, I had no problem with Ramotar being the presidential candidate twice and today I have no problem with Irfaan Ali being the presidential candidate. Let us put Guyana first and focus on the removal of this Government. God Bless our presidential candidate and God Bless Guyana!

Irfaan Ali has more than 20 years of association with the PPP, having joined the Progressive Youth Organisation as a young man.

He served the Party in different capacities and the PPP/C Government as Minister of Housing and Water/Trade and Tourism. Under his stewardship, Guyana achieved the Millennium Development Goals of providing potable water to more than 80 per cent of our people across the country. Further, Guyana reached the target of providing more than 100,000 families with house lots and turn-key houses through the creation of several new housing schemes.

Take a safe risk. Sign up for a school committee, volunteer to help with a project or bake sale, or try out for a team or talent show. Raise your hand in class more often. Talk to that cute kid in your science class.

Challenge yourself to do something that's just beyond your normal comfort zone. Pick something you'd like to do if only you had more confidence. Give yourself a little push and do it. Now that you've done that, pick something else to try – and keep repeating this same process. Confidence grows with every step forward.

Know your talents and help them shine. We're taught to work hard to improve our weaknesses.

Sometimes that's important, like bringing up a bad grade. But don't let working on a weakness prevent you from getting even better at the things you're good at.

eople might think guys don’t worry about their looks. Guys may not talk about their bodies as much as girls do. But they spend plenty of time in front of the mirror. And for some guys, body image can be a problem.

What is body image?

Body image is the way you think and feel about your body and looks. How you feel about your body affects how you feel about yourself. Many people feel unhappy with some part of their looks. But if you get too focused on what you don’t like, it can bring down your self-esteem.

People with a good body image: feel OK about the way they look accept their body as it is feel good about what their body can do take good care of their body You don’t need a perfect body to have a good body image. You just need to accept the body you have. Focus more on what you like than what you don’t. Take good care of your body. Doing these things will help you feel good about your body. And about yourself.

Can puberty affect body image?

Your body changes a lot during puberty. How you feel about your body might change too. It can take time to feel at ease in a body you’re not used to.

And not everyone goes through puberty at the same time. It can feel awkward if you’re the first one whose voice is changing or who’s growing body hair. It can be tough if you’re one of the last to change too. But as you get used to it, you can feel good about your more mature body.

How can I have a better body image?

Want to feel better about your body? Here are some ideas: Find things to like about your looks. Focus on what you do like more than what you don’t.

Focus on what your body can do. Can you run, walk, swim, ride a bike? Hit a baseball, throw a football, kick a soccer ball, sink a basket? Can you climb, hike, dance? Can you draw, paint, play a musical instrument? Your body is more than looks.

Be aware of your body. When you stretch, reach, go up and down the steps, tie your shoes — that’s your body in action. It’s easy to take it for granted. Try not to.

Be active every day. Your body needs to move to be healthy and fit. Have fun. Let yourself feel glad about what your body can do.

Do some strength training. Being in shape can help you look good and feel good. But it doesn’t just happen. You have to train and eat a healthy diet. Start with 20–30 minutes three days a week. Look to a coach or trainer to give you tips. A good workout boosts your mood too.

Treat your body right. To feel good about your body, take care of it. Don’t smoke or do other things you know are harmful. Eat good foods. Get enough sleep. Keep your body clean. Shower regularly. Take care of your teeth, hair, and skin. Wear clean clothes. When you treat yourself well, you’ll have a healthier, stronger body — and a better body image.

Be yourself. Your body is just one part of who you are.

Focus on things about the person you are too. Are you honest, kind, a good friend? Good in Maths, Science, or writing? Outdoor guy? Animal lover? A reader, artist, musician? There’s lots that’s good about you.

Do things to help. Use your body’s strength, skill, or energy to help others. Did you know your body image can get a boost when you (gladly) do a chore that helps out? Essequibo Coast man mysteriously dies in Police lock-ups

n investigation has been launched into the mysterious death of an Essequibo Coast resident, who was in the lockups at the Anna Regina Police Station on Sunday evening.

Dead is 46-yearold Om Singh, of Lot 35 Danielstown, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).

Reports are the now dead carpenter was arrested on Sunday evening about 21:45h by ranks of the AntiCrime Patrol Unit after they responded to a report

of domestic abuse.

It is alleged that Singh and his wife were engaged in a heated argument and the neighbours contacted the Police.

Nalini Singh, daughter of the now dead man told Guyana Times that after she learnt of her father’s arrest, she visited the Police Station and saw him lying on the bench motionless.

Upon enquiring about her father’s condition, she was reportedly told by Police that “they did what they have to do”.

However, at 02:30h on Monday, the Police ranks visited the home of the now dead man and requested his Identification Card (ID) or passport.

It was at this time the relatives were told that the man had died, and the Police needed some form of identification.

In a state of shock, the relatives related that Singh did not suffer from any illnesses and went to the Police Station in good health.

On the other hand, the Police related that Singh

suffered a seizure and was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Relatives are of the belief that Singh might have been beaten while in the Police lock-ups and are calling on the relevant authorities to have a thorough investigation.

The now dead man’s reputed wife was subsequently taken into custody.

The man’s body was taken to the Onderneeming Funeral Home to await an autopsy.

PNCR endorses Granger GPHC director’s job advertised as presidential candidate prior to demotion

t’s official. The incumbent President David Granger has been endorsed by his party, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) to run for a second term at the next General and Regional Elections, constitutionally due in March.

The PNCR is the larger partner in the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) coalition and on Monday, it officially threw its support behind President Granger.

This was communicated in a letter from PNCR General Secretary (GS) Amna Ally.

In the letter, she noted that Granger was elected unopposed at the last congress as the party’s leader. According to the GS, the President remains “capable, fit and proper” for a second term and on that basis, the party endorsed his candidature.

On Sunday, AFC Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan told Guyana Times that his party was “likely” to support Granger as the coalition’s presidential candidate.

He had added, however, that the matter would be ventilated among the party at the upcoming National Executive Conference on January 26.

“I support him fully as presidential candidate, personally… [but] we haven’t gone there as a collective,” Ramjattan said. “We’re having our national executive [meeting] and certainly you’ll have me supporting him there…

pate (there will be support for President Granger). I don’t think of anybody else with the quality of statesmanship as him,” the AFC Chairman, who is also the Public Security Minister, had asserted.

At the party’s first press conference for the year on Wednesday last, Vice Chair Cathy Hughes said it was too early for the party to say whether it would support a Granger presidential candidacy.

“We’re not there yet right now; we’re absolutely not there right now. We hoped that President Granger continues the speedy recovery that he’s making … We continue to wish him the best, [but] we have no idea when the elections is going to be and so we’re not in a position to answer that right now,” Hughes had stated.

While there had been no official public statement from the APNU camp until today, President Granger last year had indicated the possibility of him returning as presidential candidate for the coalition. “… I am a servant of my party; I’m a servant of the

Partnership; I’m a servant of the coalition and my duty is to serve and I will not run away from service; that is as much as I can say… I have to bear in mind that my elevation to the presidency was as a result of popular support, it was a result of democratic processes and I will not abandon those processes …,” the Head of State told reporters at a press conference in August.

Since then, however, President Granger was diagnosed in October with NonHodgkin Lymphoma and is being treated in Cuba, which requires him to travel back and forth between the two countries. In fact, he returned to Guyana on Saturday evening after undergoing his fourth round of chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Following the toppling of the Government after the no-confidence motion was passed on December 21, political parties have intensified preparations for elections. On Saturday, former Housing Minister Irfaan Ali was elected as the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) presidential candidate.

he Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has revealed that the vacancy for the position of a senior department head was advertised prior to his demotion some time ago.

Guyana Times reported on Sunday that the former Director of Medical and Professional Services, Dr Sheik Amir was demoted from his substantive post.

A source at the hospital informed this publication that there seemed to be an ongoing purging of senior management.

Attention was pointed to the recent demotion of Dr Amir, who was the Director of Medical and Professional Services. Dr Amir, who has served the Corporation for over 19 years, is a decorated surgeon. The reasons behind his demotion are unclear. Dr

Amir’s post was given to an orthopaedic surgeon, who spends approximately onethird of the year on missions in Belize.

In an attempt to refute Guyana Times’ article, the GPHC admitted that Dr Amir’s job was advertised while he held the position and that he was eligible to apply.

“Dr Sheik Amir served his entire tenure as DMPS and that it was at the conclusion of his contract, in accordance with best practice, the vacancy was advertised in all the daily newspapers…inviting qualified medical professionals, including Dr Amir to apply,” the institution stated.

While Amir, who served in the position, did apply along with three others, he was interviewed, but the position was nonetheless given to someone else.

“Four individuals, (names deliberately withheld) including Dr Amir applied and were all interviewed by an independent panel which consisted of personnel from the Board of Directors, the Ministry of Public Health, the University of Guyana School of Medicine and the GPHC administration. At the completion of this process the best candidate was selected,” the hospital said in a press release on Monday.

Dr Amir’s demotion comes weeks after former Director of Facilities, Andy Mahadeo resigned. A source close to Mahadeo confirmed that the director was pressured into resigning. He served the Corporation for nearly five years in managerial posts and has both a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a Master’s Degree.

The ammunition, grenades, and firearm found during the searches

our days after ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) nabbed five persons in boats travelling along the Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) and unearthed grenades, several weapons and narcotics, the men were taken before Magistrate Sherdel IsaacsMarcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Two of the five are Guyanese and have been identified as 26-year-old Herilall Gildarie, a boat captain of Eteringbang Landing, and 52-year-old Chandradat Satram, a general manager of a mining company.

by Attorney Patrice Henry, who made a successful application for bail on an illegal ammunition charge, but his client was remanded for

a narcotics charge.

Satram was represented

by Attorney Mark Conway, who was unsuccessful in securing bail for two firearm-related charges.

Meanwhile, the other three defendants, who are Venezuelan, were charged separately for possession of hand grenades.

They have been identified as 37-year-old Eulice Maneiro, along with Luis Gonzales and Daniel Contreras, both aged 27, who, according to investigators, are alleged members of the Sindicato gang.

Police Prosecutor Quinn Harris informed the court that based on the outcome of thorough investigations, Gonzales and Contreras were found to be members of the Sindicato gang.

However, by means of a translator, the two foreign-

ers claimed that they have no part in the Sindicato gang, but were rather threatened by the gang members, who were on the boat at the time of the interception to carry the grenades.

The Police Prosecutor objected to bail citing the seriousness of the charge and the prevalence and penalty it attracts.

The men were all remanded to prison and the case will continue at Kamarang Magistrate’s Court on March 18, 2019.

Last week, the Police reported that ranks in F Division (Interior Locations) intercepted a boat about 13:30h and conducted a search of its occupants.

During the search, ranks unearthed a live 12-gauge cartridge and 271 grams of cannabis in the possession

of the 26-year-old Guyanese Captain of Eteringbang Landing.

Meanwhile, about 15:30h on Thursday last, the ranks intercepted another boat at Mode Hole, Cuyuni River, and two of the 17 occupants were found in possession of a live grenade each.

Later in the day, a third vessel was intercepted around 17:30h and during a search, one of the two occupants who resides at Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) was found in possession of an unlicensed pistol with 11 live matching rounds.

Then, later on Thursday, about 23:30h, the ranks searched a boat at Eteringbang Landing, and found in possession of the 27-year-old Venezuelan Captain, five live rounds of ammunition.

Magistrates, Judges to be trained on Juvenile Justice Act

ersons in the justice system, specifically in the Children’s Court, are expected to undergo training to be fully aware of how matters should be dealt with under the recently-passed Juvenile Justice Act. This is according to Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, during a recent interview with Guyana Times.

Since the Act was assented to, he said a Director and two Deputies have been appointed who would be responsible for ensuring the training is conducted, among other things.

“So these three persons – the Director and the two Deputies – also have to set up an educational awareness programme for even the Policemen and Prosecutors and so on and the Children’s Court administrators, the Chancellor and so will also be doing an education of Magistrates as to how the Act should be operationalised,” he explained.

be dealing with youths must know how to treat them.

The training for these workers, he explained, will be a joint effort.

“The Act brings in a brand new regime under which juveniles must operate and all the ancillary other units like Prosecutors, other people who may be investigators; Judges, they will also have to know a thing or two about this regime and so there will be need for educating them and that is what I think the Chancellor will have to do so it would be a mul-

tiple effort, a multi-faceted effort that not only the Ministry of Public Security (will be involved in), but also the Judiciary and the Magistracy,” he said.

It was just recently that the Minister spoke of the need for Police Officers to not only be trained but properly sensitised to be able to handle youths who would have committed criminal offences.

He revealed that a manual is being drafted to guide the general conduct of Officers when handling youths who have committed

criminal offences.

“You have to give special treatment to children who are underage. Now that the Juvenile Justice Act was passed, apparently some of these Policemen do not know (about it), and, of course, we have to get our Policemen all over to know,” he said.

According to him, the necessary training for ranks has already begun, but he explained that the Police Training College would be incorporating the Act, with the development of a manual to guide the ranks’ conduct.

The manual, he said, is being developed with the aid of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Juvenile Justice Bill was passed in April 2018. The draft bill was conceived in 2004 under the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic Administration, with support and input from UNICEF. The first Juvenile Court was later opened in Guyana back in November 2018, with plans being announced to launch two more in Berbice and Essequibo later this year.

...for the job he PPP elected their presidential candidate through a procedure they’ve had for exactly fifty years: having their 35-member Central Committee vote by secret ballot. Yet, from the squeals from some quarters you’d think General Secretary Jagdeo stuffed the ballot box like Burnham in 1973! No one could believe Irfaan Ali would trounce Anil Nandlall in a straight one-and-one faceoff.

But he did after all the other three candidates dropped out. Some had figured that he could only squeak in if the vote was splintered ...but here it was he came through 2411! Fact is, the overriding majority of the PPP’s CC had to’ve felt Irfaan was the better candidate at this juncture of our history.

And what’s this conjuncture? The PPP is a party that has explicitly defined itself as one dedicated to development to raise the standard of living of the poor in our massively underdeveloped Guyana. Secondly, that all parties agree that our model of development should be based on the free-market system and foreign direct investment should be encouraged to produce goods for the export market.

And thirdly, with first oil scheduled for 2020, we finally will have the capital to build the infrastructure demanded to make an economy take off.

The point of all this, is Guyana needs at its head a Chief Executive who understands the mechanics of combining those factors to produce growth with development rather than the PNC talkers we’ve had between 1964 and 1992 and from 2015. They’re releasing a lot of hot air into the atmosphere about Irfaan not being “lettered”. With all due respect what did the lettered lawyer Burnham, the dentist Jagan and the historian General Granger do for Guyana’s actual development?

That’s not to say these gentlemen from Queen’s College didn’t WANT development – far from it. They slavered for development. But they didn’t have the background that cultivated the nous to pick sense from nonsense from the cornucopia of development models out there. Bharrat Jagdeo had the MOJO to save a devastated Guyana and set it on the virtuous path of growth. But Irfaan was allowed to go beyond that, standing on Jagdeo’s shoulders so to speak. Youthful as he is, he was given the opportunity to actually put his party’s and his ideas on a critical aspect of human development – Housing and Water – to the test and he came through with flying colours.

And that’s what the members of the CC knew: what was needed to hit the ground running and get Guyana on a sustainable path of growth AT THIS JUNCTURE was someone with the specific skill set that Irfaan possesses. But it wasn’t just the CC who recognised that cometh the hour cometh the man. The people who spontaneously came out in their thousands in Irfaan’s native West Demerara knew, up close and personal, the measure of the man.

Unlike some other leaders. He didn’t move to the bright lights of Georgetown when he became a Minister – but remained with them.

For these and so many other reasons, Irfaan’s the man of the hour! ...against the PNC One of the peculiarities of Guyanese politics is that Burnham imprinted on it a compulsion to seize power by any means necessary. Including violence.

As such, parties that oppose the PNC have to be prepared at all times for extreme PNC-inspired violence.

Young Jagdeo was tested by the “mo fyaah, slow fyaah” strategy of PNC leader Desmond Hoyte. They never thought he would stand them down – which he did by 2008, when the last of the Buxton gang were eliminated.

With oil raising the ante, the PPP must have leaders at its helm who won’t flinch from the tough decisions that have to be made soon.

Mother dies at GPHC 9 days after child’s birth …family calling for answers

mother is now calling for justice and an investigation into her daughter’s death after giving birth at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on December 28, 2018.

Bibi Khan of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo is accusing the doctors at the GPHC of “killing” her eldest daughter, Fariena Mohammed, and offering no plausible explanations for her death. The grief-stricken woman said the 30-year-old Mohammed was pregnant with her second child and on Thursday, December 28, 2018, she went into labour shortly after 13:00h.

She was rushed to GPHC and gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Shahid Ali, shortly after 16:00h.

“She get this baby normal and everything…she was okay but she say that she belly was hurting…On Monday, December 31, she call me and tell me that the baby nah feel well. She said that the baby wasn’t getting to breathe and was getting blue,” Khan related.

The woman related that the doctors informed the family that the baby would have swallowed some of the amniotic fluid hence the reason for his complications.

The baby boy was transferred to the Neonatal Unit and immediately began receiving treatment for the infection. Mohammed was discharged but remained at the hospital since her infant was still hospitalised. Since she was in the ward and her baby in another section of the building, it required

Mohammed’s mother is calling on the hospital’s medical staff and by extension the administration to provide them with the history of her daughter’s treatment along with the answers to her multiple questions.

“I need justice not only for my daughter but also to make sure that no other mother goes through what I am going through.

cting Chief Justice Roxanne George on Monday overruled a Fixed Date Application (FDA) filed on behalf of former Attorney General Anil Nandlall, who challenged Magistrate Fabayo Azore’s decision to call on him to lead a defence in the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) law books matter. This signals that Magistrate Azore will be allowed to continue hearing the matter for which Nandlall is accused of taking 14 Commonwealth law books worth $2.3 million.

Last year the Georgetown Magistrate had overruled the defence’s no-case submission. Nandlall through his lawyers filed a motion in the High Court, which had petitioned the court the quash the November 23, 2018 ruling by Magistrate Fabayo Azore and for the charge of “Larceny by a Bailee contrary to Section 165 of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01” to be thrown out.

On Monday, Justice George, SC, gave her decision and stressed that to intervene in the case before Azore would be to usurp the power of the Magistrate, adding that while the High Court does have jurisdiction to hear the case, the matter is evidential in nature and would be up to the Magistrate to rule on the said evidence.

Nandlall’s Attorney, Devindra Kissoon had argued that the Magistrate should have given reasons for her decision but according to Justice George, while the Magistrate should give reasons when a prima facie case is made out, this is not usually done. Rather, reasons are given at the end of the trial. While observing that there is no actual charge of “Larceny by a Bailee”, con-

trary to the Criminal Law Offences Act in Guyana or in England, the judge outlined that this would be covered under the charge of simple larceny. The ruling went on to point out that Magistrate Azore was not required to file an affidavit in answer.

Following the ruling, Nandlall told reporters that his attorney only addressed jurisdiction and he did not expect the judge to rule on the overall matter. “I am surprised by the ruling, the judge had asked us to persuade her whether or not she has jurisdiction and that is all that we set out to do and she ruled that she had jurisdiction to review the Magistrate’s ruling. That is all we asked her to address and the judge decided the entire case,” he noted.

The former Attorney General said that his side did not get the opportunity to address Justice George on the evidence, noting that they were hoping to address her after ruling the on the court’s jurisdiction in an open court setting. Nandlall observed that he will be challenging the court’s decision.

When he had filed his writ last year, Nandlall was asking the court to declare that

the charge for the offence of “Larceny by a Bailee contrary to Section 165 of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01”, is an unknown offence, therefore, it is in violation of Articles 40, 144 (4) and 149 (d) of the Constitution.

The former Attorney General was, on April 27, 2017, released on self-bail after he was charged for fraudulently acquiring and converting Commonwealth law books to his own use and benefits; property of the State. It was three days prior, on April 24, 2017, that he was called in to SOCU headquarters for questioning in relation to the Commonwealth Law Books.

Nandlall had explained to the media that when he was appointed Attorney General, he requested as part of his contract of service for the Government of Guyana to stand the expense for his subscriptions for the Commonwealth Law Books.

He had subscribed to Lexis Nexis, the publishers of the Law reports. Insisting that nothing was abnormal about the practice, the former AG had argued that it was done by other Government Ministries such as Finance and Health.

He had expressed awareness that for decades prior, the Government had paid for professional and technical publications, journals, periodicals and magazines. This, he said, had been done for Ministers as well as professional and technical personnel.

His contentions were corroborated publicly by then President Donald Ramotar.

Nandlall has maintained that the accusation laid against him by SOCU was instigated by current Attorney General Basil Williams because he had criticised Williams’s performance.

Teen jailed for stealing cellphone

fter being convicted twice for simple larceny in 2018, 19-yearold Shakeem Mentore made yet another court appearance before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus facing similar charges.

A 24-year-old real estate agent was on Monday taken before the court of law after he was slapped with three counts of fraud.

However, Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant may not return to court, since he gave the Bank 15 different addresses.

However, his attorney argued that he only had four addresses, which were given to the Court since he is a real estate agent.

However, bail was refused, and Dino was remanded to prison. The case will continue on February 4, 2019.

he High Court in Georgetown was the scene of continued heavy security on Monday as the murder trial involving defendants Mark Royden Williams, called “Smallie”, along with Sherwin Nero, also known as “Catty”, continued.

However, it was a voir dire (trial within a trial), which means that what transpired cannot be publicly disclosed as it may be prejudicial for the ears of the 12-member jury that was empanelled earlier this month when the Demerara Criminal Assizes got underway.

The two men stand accused of the August 30, 2007 murder of businessman Kumar Singh, called “Mango Man”.

Reports were that on the fateful night, four gunmen invaded Singh’s Cove and John, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home during which the businessman was shot dead. It was in July 2008 that the two suspects were initially charged for the capital of-

ecuting the case.

Defence counsels Nigel Hughes and Ashley Henry are representing Williams and Nero. Williams had escaped prison in July 2017 after being sentenced to death in February of that year for the 2008 Bartica Massacre.

The case continues today at the High Court.

pposition Chief Whip Gail Teixeira has joined with other party leaders to express her confidence in the party’s new presidential candidate, former Housing and Water Minister and the Opposition Chief Economic Spokesperson Irfaan Ali. Texieira was at the time speaking at a public meeting at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, which is the hometown of the presidential candidate, on Sunday.

She expressed her belief that as the presidential candidate, Ali will be capable of delivering a victory at the polls.

“I have seen him as a young comrade coming into this party. When you look at the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Granger group, they are all in their 80’s. We want the young people. We encourage them, we push them.

I know this young man I know he is going to deliver as President,” Teixeira said to cheers from PPP/C supporters.

The party stalwart also urged supporters not to believe everything negative

that is being peddled and encouraged them to rally around Ali, so that he is elected the next President.

“Is more work, when that is done we have more work.

Don’t let people get between us. We are going to win with Irfaan Ali. We can do it and we will do it,” she added.

Texieira was one of the members of the PPP who contested the post but at the last minute, pulled out.

General Anil Nandlall. Ali won the election by way of secret ballot in a large majority of 24 votes.

Ali has already made a commitment to work hard to improve the lives of all Guyanese. He promised to address corruption, create jobs especially for young people, expanding housing, grow the economy, improve the country’s infrastructure and look after vulnerable groups.

overed with bushes and unwanted shrubbery, the community grounds and centres across the West Coast of Demerara have been in a state of despair and regional councils have been trying to resuscitate these structures with little assistance from Central Government.

Attention was placed on the Cornelia Ida Community Centre, which is partially inaccessible, but even if residents gained entry, they would be disenchanted to see the dreadful surrounding which awaits them. Along with the high bushes, there is an old and dilapidated structure which is isolated.

Democratic Council (NDC), Paul Narine told Guyana Times on Monday that there are several public spaces along the stretch of road which requires rehabilitation.

He explained that the Department of Sport is responsible for injecting funds to facilitate any upgrading of these sport grounds.

Consequently, there has been little support in terms of financial assistance. On the NDC’s part, there is no substantial income to cushion these expenses.

“The Department of Sport does normally give a grant to these project but for the longest while, all of that change.

The NDC is small and cannot generate no big income to do these kind of rehabilitation. It’s very hard on the

NDC,” said Narine.

It was related that the only responsibility that the Council can undertake is to weed the bushes and conduct a small land clearing. At another Stewartville Ground, attempts were made to construct a concrete pitch so that youths can be afforded the facilities to better their skills. From the subvention provided for the year, he would have asked for lights to be installed at the ground but two lights would cost some $500,000.

“The only maintenance that the NDC is doing is weed the bushes or whatever to make it accessible.

That’s all the NDC is doing.

If they fix one ground at a time for us, it would good for the community. Like for the one in Stewartville, we finish the fencing and this activity started four years ago.

In order to get the youths occupied, we had to make do with what we had and build a concrete pitch for the rainy season. This year, I asked for money for two lights which is $500,000 but I don’t know if the money would be given for us to do these things,” the Deputy Chairman insisted.

Narine stressed the importance of these structures as they serve as a recreational activity for persons, primarily children, within the various communities. A such, calls were made for attention to be placed on these facilities, as well as assistance from the Government.

“I don’t know if we can get some money from Central

Government to get the ground up and running. The NDC get $4 million every year to divide among 10 constituencies so it’s not a big amount we get to use to do these works. By the time we put a fence and wait for money the next year, half of the fence is there.” (Rupadai Seenarine)

The PPP said Ali, 38, has been a member of the PPP and has also been part of the leadership for 15 years, during which he held the position of Finance Secretary for several years. He served in the Cabinet for seven years, holding the portfolios of Housing and Water and Tourism, Industry and Commerce. He is the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly.

Bilingual project Region 6 residents protest benefitting both GWI over poor quality service children, teachers – Coordinator

esidents of Region Six on Monday launched a picketing exercise outside of the Guyana Water Inc (GWI) Chesney Regional Office on the Corentyne to express their disgust and dissatisfaction over the quality of service and water they receive together with high bills.

From the picket line they shouted, “We want good water,” as they held placards and marched in front of the utility company’s office.

It was the second successive week that residents have protested outside the GWI’s office. Many of the protestors say that it is impossible for them to utilize water costing in excess of $12,000 in per month.

According to several residents attempts to query their bills is met with hostility. One resident told this newspaper that when attempts are made to make queries they are told that the bills must be paid first before any questions will be entertained.

On Monday, Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) Regional Supervisor in Berbice Zamal Hussain, who joined the protest line, said that the PPP has been inundated with the complaints from consumers.

According to him, the party decided to join the protestors and to take a leadership role since it is of the view that the management of the utility company does not care about the ordinary citizens.

“We ask to see the official at GWI to ensure that we have some resolution to these problems. To date that is not forthcoming. We have seen that the disrespect for customers continues because many of them are being forced to pay their bills before they can query them.

This is a violation of the rules. I think that you have to query the bills first before you come up with the right payments,” he said.

He explained that residents in east Canje were promised that there will be

no increase rates until they start to receive treated water. However, as from the time meters were attached to their service lines it attracted new charges.

“I think this Government is really operating in a dictatorship manner. Even GWI the CEO we cannot see him as yet. He needs to meet with the persons from the different areas,” Hussain said.

Some of the protestors claimed that for four days they have not received potable water. Apart from that, the quality of the water is also a worrying factor.

“We are advocating the GWI respect customers and continue to listen to them,” Hussain added.

Meanwhile, customers from New Amsterdam have expressed concern over the fact that the office in the town does not adequately address queries forcing them to travel miles to have their issues resolved.

Residents said that on many occasions the office at New

However, they demand that the customer is required to pay the bill as stated or risk disconnection.

One customer from Canefield, East Canje was billed in excess of $16,000 for the month of November 2018 and $4000 for December.

According to that customer, she went to GWI on two occasions to query the bill and on one occasion she was told that it was an estimated bill and on the other she was informed that it was an actual reading.

“They send somebody to come and see if I have any leakage and the person read the meter and try to calculate what my bill should be and up to know they can’t give me a figure,” the woman told this publication.

Meanwhile, efforts by this newspaper for a comment on the issues affecting Berbice to the GWI’s Chesney office was met with hostility.

The Project Coordinator, according to the Department of Public Information (DPI) in his opening remarks said “It is my pleasure to update you about quality bilingual education for Wapichan children.” in his native Wapichan language. He noted that this is an ongoing project that had started in the 1980s.

In 2000, the Wapichan Literacy Programme developed a proposal and presented it to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Amazon Programme to restart the Wapichan reading programme. In September 2018, the Quality Bilingual Education Programme for Wapichan was restarted.

Presently, Sylvanius pointed out, “both English and Wapichan are being taught at the nursery level and it is the aim of the programme to be extended to Grades One through Three.”

The Coordinator also stated that a research team is in Aishalton working on creating a Nursery Year 2 curriculum.

After the official launch in July 2018, several nursery rhymes and children’s stories, have been translated in both English Language and Wapichan and have been reviewed by the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD).

Aishalton is among several villages spanning Guyana’s hinterland regions, where English is not the first language. This has been creating a challenge in effectively educating the children.

he Public Health Ministry on Monday unveiled a billboard at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre as part of the Smart Healthcare Initiative to provide upgraded and environmentally friendly services.

The centre on the East Bank of Demerara is one of the five health facilities identified by the ministry to be upgraded. Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence stated that apart from resilience the facility will become one “where the services can be provided in such a manner that there is no cumbersomeness in terms of the patients accessing the services and the staff being able to provide those services.”

She added that the initiative “is a great takeaway for the health sector, we will borrow from this procedure and ensure that we implement it as we go along into the other health facilities.”

In a packed courtroom of relatives of the deceased and the seven accused, Police Detective Sergeant Rodwell Sarrabo testified that he was on duty when three confrontations were held between “Allan Jagdeo” and the accused persons; Delwayne Croft, Samuel Bacchus and

Allan Dorset.

It was during one of these confrontations, according to Sarrabo, that Cassandra was identified as the one who gave the men the head ties to cover their faces. When the males returned after allegedly executing the act, they were reportedly told: “Why you had to shoot the man.” Under cross-examination, the police witness admitted that all three of them, during the confrontation, denied killing the 20-year-old man.

Steven Mohamed, who was packing drinks aback the store, also recalled coming face-to-face with the gunmen, who had asked for the “boss man”, but he said he had not known where he was.

MoE, UNICEF partners to formulate policy

he Education Ministry has collaborated with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to host a one-week Policy Formulation Workshop to draft the Education Sector Plan for 2019-2023.

The workshop which began on Monday is being held at the Herdmanston Lodge and has drawn participants from across the education sector and the country.

According to Education Minister Nicolette Henry, the MoE is committed to increasing students’ achievements through an efficient

education system While delivering her brief remarks, the Minister informed the gathering that “through this process of developing the new Education Sector Plan the priority of the Ministry is to ensure better alignment between policy formulation and implementation along the entire education value chain”.

Additionally, Henry is quoted by an Education Ministry release as saying that she believes that meticulous planning within the timelines stipulated is essential to the transformation and improvement of the

education sector.

Further, the Education Minister noted that as the Education Sector Plan is formulated it is important that officers set clear targets that will be achieved in terms of quality, equity and access and the need to continuously monitor and adjust their plans in order to achieve the objectives.

Minister Henry added that “in order for our students to stand a chance to compete globally, Guyana’s education system must develop young Guyanese who are knowledgeable, think critically, are creative, have

leadership skills and are able to compete with the rest of the world.”

According to the Minister, another area that is on her radar is the reduction of the disparity in the performance between different groups of students, in particular between coastal and hinterland students and those students who have special education needs.

She said that to deliver on these fundamental transformations, a shift and enlargement of focus is required. Towards this end, technology-enabled learning is an area that the MoE will be placing greater focus.

“We need to examine as objectively as possible what strategies have worked well and which strategies need to be changed or adjusted as we move into this new plan period”.

UNICEF Representative, Sylvie Fouet said that the exercise is not a one-stop approach, but she sees it as a journey that will take Guyana places in the sphere of education.

The five-day workshop includes the Regional Education Officers (REOs) and other senior education officials.

he Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) recently conducted research in the Region, which found that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) prevention response is inadequate in key populations.

According to the PANCAP Coordinating Unit, the Priority Areas Coordinating Committee (PACC), the technical group of the PANCAP Executive Board, commissioned an evaluation of the Caribbean Regional Strategic Framework on HIV and AIDS (CRSF) between 2014 and 2018.

This Committee bears the responsibility of coordinating and overseeing the implementation of operational plans for the CRSF. “The evaluation found that while the Caribbean has made progress in responding to the HIV epidemic, the impact of the prevention response has been inadequate, particularly among key populations,” PANCAP said in a statement.

This evaluation was said to have been conducted between April and November of 2018 with three objectives focused on obtaining feedback from the regional partners as to the progress, achievements and gaps of the Regional HIV response and to determine the level of implementation of the CRSF, the progress, achievements, gaps and challenges.

It was also aimed at providing clear recommendations on the strategic priority areas for the new CRSF and to inform its development.

It was conducted in two phases which saw the collection and analysis of survey data from a Partner Self-Assessment and a Partnership Assessment and the collection and analysis of data for key indicators of the CRSF 2014 to 2018 to help the Partnership determine the progress made, particularly in relation to impact and outcomes, in phases one and two respectively.

New HIV infections decline

Statistics provided by the organisation, which were collected in six strategic prior-

ity areas revealed that the annual number of new HIV infections among adults in the Caribbean declined by only 18 per cent from 2010 to 2017, from 19,000 to 15,000.

Majority of the new HIV infections, which represented 68 per cent of the total population was accounted for by Men who have sex with Men (MSM), Sex Workers (SWs) and their clients, transgender persons, and persons who use drugs PANCAP disclosed.

New infections among children also fell from about 2300 in 2010 to 1100.

Although significant progress has been made in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, available data for the period 2015 to 2017 showed that HIVinfected pregnant women receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) to reduce HIV transmission declined from 92 per cent in 2014 to 79 per cent in 2015 and 75 per cent in 2016 and 2017 respectively, illustrating a significant decrease that requires investigation.

Nonetheless, there has been progress in placing more people living with HIV on treatment, however, much more needs to be done to increase the numbers and to retain people on treatment, PANCAP reported.

Financing decreasing

According to PANCAP, the Global financial resources to support the HIV epidemic have been decreasing since 2011.

“However, domestic financing has improved during the implementation of the CRSF 2014 - 2018.

UNAIDS 2018, noted that domestic resources increased between 2006 - 2017 by 124 per cent, while international resources declined by 16 per cent”. As of the end of 2017, domestic resources were contributing significantly to the cost of ART and the overall treatment programme.

Despite this trend, national resources to support services to achieve prevention continue to be low, with the implication that the gains could be reversed if this gap is not quickly filled,” the organisation explained.

he Commonwealth Students’ Association (CSA), through the Caribbean working group representative of Guyana, Umadevi Bux and Caribbean/Americas Representative Benjamin Fraser, officially announced the formation of the Guyana National Students’ Organisation (GNSO) Steering Committee.

According to the CSA, the appointments come with great pleasure and anticipation, as this is a historic event. The body is the first of its kind in Guyana that will be solely focusing on students and the commencement process for a National Students’ Organisation (Guyana).

The Steering Committee comprises a group of students from across the tertiary educational institutions in Guyana, public and private; as such, they bring a wide array of knowledge and skills to the future formation of the Organisation through the International Commonwealth Students’ Youth Network.

After sentencing Williams, Brinkema ordered her to surrender the Bottega Veneta portfolio. She also had to forfeit a car, gun, watches and other items. “You’re not going to be able to take it with you to prison anyway,” the judge said. For four years, Williams claimed she had purchased Austrian software that would allow doctors to remotely examine and talk with patients and needed cash to pay taxes and fees on the product. She convinced a successful California businessman named Christian D’Andrade to partner with her to raise $4 million, including $1.4 million of his own money. She raised over $1 million more from other victims. In fact, Williams never fully purchased the health-care software, spending less than $300,000 of the total $5.4 million she had gotten from investors. McPhun admitted that she lied to one investor about where the money was going, thinking she would be able to repay it soon. She did not realize the entire project was a fraud until she saw on the news in February that Williams had been arrested. “That was only the beginning of the nightmare,” McPhun, who lost her life savings and her home, said in court last year. She was also sentenced to probation.

Two others, both former air marshals, admitted that Williams convinced them to intimidate people she claimed owed her money by pretending to still be federal agents.

Mom turned away from health centre, Indonesia reviews release of radical cleric baby born in back seat of car

S

imone Chadee anticipated the birth of her fourth child next month. But she had no idea she was going to deliver her baby girl in the back seat of a moving car in Marabella.

Baby Athena has been given a clean bill of health and weighed 2.8 kilograms.

Chadee said she started having labour pains on Friday afternoon and hired a car to take her to the Marabella Health Centre.

But when she reached there with her niece Amalee Rivers, the staff told her they did not have any facilities to deliver the baby.

She was allegedly told: “Why did you come here and not go to the hospital?”

Chadee told Newsday she believed there would have been a doctor and nurses there to help her.

“A nurse briefly checked my dilation and said the baby was coming, and told me there was nothing they could do for me and I should go to the hospital.”

Still visibly traumatised, she said: “A nurse told me to lie on my side in the back seat of the car while on the way to the hospital. I was in so much pain, but I still could not believe what I was hearing. I left the centre. I thought I was going to lose

my baby.”

Knowing there would be traffic at that time, which would make getting to the hospital difficult, Chadee said the driver took her to

the Marabella police station.

“Going to the nearest police station was my last option.” Chadee’s amniotic sac (water bag) burst in front the station. Police agreed to

escort her to the hospital.

“I was so scared. I have never been so scared in my life for myself and my baby.”

Rivers sat in the back seat trying to comfort her.

Chadee said: “I told her this baby is coming now. At that moment I knew I was going to have the baby in the car.”

The driver, who happened to be an emergency medical technician, told Rivers what to do and a few minutes later Athena was born.

“I could hear her cries, and Amalee handed her to me. She was the perfect angel. We wrapped her in a blanket. I cried tears of joy when I held her.”

On arrival at the San Fernando general hospital, mother and baby were taken into accident and emergency department where doctors cut the umbilical cord.

“I really would not wish this upon any mother. I think there should be some provisions where, in emergency situations, nurses and doctors could assist pregnant women at health facilities. What if, while on my way to the hospital, my baby got into difficulty?

What would they have said?

Body of slain Journalist found in northwest Mexico

he body of a slain journalist was found in northwestern Mexico, authorities said on Monday, adding to a long list of reporters who have fallen victim to record levels of violence in the country.

The corpse of Rafael Murua Manriquez, 34, was found late Sunday afternoon by the side of a road between the towns of Santa Rosalia and San Ignacio in the state of Baja California Sur, the state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Murua’s body had wounds in the thorax, state prosecutors said, without giving more detail on the le-

sions.

According to the advocacy group Article 19, Murua was director of a communi-

ty radio station in the state and had been in a program affording protection to journalists at risk since 2017.

The journalist’s death was the second to occur since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office on Dec. 1.

Article 19, which defends freedom of expression and access to information, has documented the murder of 122 journalists in Mexico since 2000. Murders in Mexico jumped by a third to more than 33,000 last year.

Oil prices edge down as global growth worries threaten demand

il prices edged lower on Tuesday as concerns over global economic growth stoked fears over future demand.

International Brent crude oil futures were down 10 cents, or 0.2 percent, at $62.64 by 0106 GMT. They closed down 0.1 percent on Monday.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $53.70 per barrel, down 0.1 percent, or 4 cents.

“Trade war concerns have reduced global growth expectations and with it comes a lower demand for energy,” said Alfonso Esparza, senior

analyst, OANDA. The International Monetary Fund trimmed its global growth forecasts on Monday and a survey showed increasing pessimism among business chiefs, highlighting the challenges facing policymakers as they tackle an array of actual or potential crises, from the U.S.-China trade war to Brexit.

Also clouding the outlook was data showing a slowdown in growth in China, the world’s second biggest economy.

However, oil prices were offered some support in the wake of recent data that indicated major exporters

were beginning to curtail production.

In the United States, energy services firm Baker Hughes said that energy companies cut the number of rigs drilling for oil by 21 last week, the biggest decline in three years and taking the count down to the lowest since May, 2018 at 852.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)on Friday published a list of oil output cuts by its members and other major producers for the six months to June, an effort to boost confidence in a move designed to avoid a supply glut in 2019. (Reuters)

ndonesia is reviewing a decision to release the jailed mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombing after an intervention by Australian PM Scott Morrison.

A security minister said President Joko Widodo had asked him to review all aspects of the planned release of radical cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir.

This came hours after Morrison asked Indonesia to show “great respect” for Australia.

The nightclub bombing killed more than 200 people, many of them Australian.

Ba’asyir, 80, is considered the spiritual leader of banned group Jemaah Islamiah, which was blamed for the attack.

Last week’s decision by President Widodo to release him on medical grounds drew widespread criticism.

At a hastily called news conference on Monday, the Indonesia security minister said that decision was under review.

Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by

one name, said President Widodo had “instructed related officials to immediately conduct a more thorough and comprehensive assessment”.

Morrison said earlier that he and other officials had been in direct contact with their Indonesian counterparts over the impending release.

“Australians died horrifically on that night, and I think Australians everywhere would be expecting that this matter was treated with the utmost seriousness by our government, which it is,” he said.

“But also that the Indonesian government would show great respect for Australia in how they manage this issue.”

Ba’asyir was jailed for 15 years in 2011 after being found guilty of supporting militants in Aceh province.

Venezuela National Guards Nicaraguan Journalist flees rebel against Maduro citing threats T wenty-seven members of Venezuela’s National Guard have been arrested after they allegedly revolted against the Government of President Nicolás Maduro, the Defence Ministry said.

Videos posted on social media showed the officers calling for the removal from office of President Maduro.

The men reportedly seized weapons from a National Guard command post in the Cotiza area of the capital, Caracas.

Footage also shows residents and security forces clashing in the area.

The incident comes a year after a rebel Police helicopter pilot, Óscar Pérez, threw grenades at Government buildings before being killed in a shootout with the security forces.

The Defence Ministry said a “small group” of National Guard members had stolen weapons from a security post in the Petare neighbourhood of Caracas and taken four officers hostage before making their way to Cotiza in the early hours of Monday.

N i c a r a g u a n Journalist who has been openly critical of the Government of President Daniel Ortega says he has gone into exile in Costa Rica.

Carlos Fernando Chamorro said he had made the decision to leave Nicaragua with his wife after receiving a series of threats.

Chamorro’s move comes five weeks after the digital newspaper he edits, El Confidencial, was raided by Police.

He is the latest in a series of independent Journalists to leave.

Chamorro, who comes from an influential Nicaraguan family, also hosts a weekly TV show and is one of the country’s bestknown Journalists.

He is the son of Violeta Chamorro, who governed Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997 after beating Ortega in the 1990 presidential election.

His father, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, was shot dead

when he was the editor of La Prensa, a newspaper which opposed the rule of the Somoza family in Nicaragua.

Chamorro’s offices were raided on December 14, the same day Police searched the premises of a number of NonGovernmental Organisations which had denounced alleged human rights abuses in Nicaragua.

Speaking from the capital of neighbouring Costa Rica on Sunday, he said that while he had been recurring to all legal avenues to put an end to “the occupation of our newsroom”, the threats against him had worsened and he feared being labelled a criminal in his home country.

hilean President Sebastian Pinera announced on Monday a bill to set stiffer fines and jail time for serious violations of the country’s environmental laws, marking a shift toward increasing environmental scrutiny in the world’s top copper producer.

The initiative would make it a crime to mislead environmental inspectors or to obstruct the enforcement of environmental laws, centre-right Pinera said in a speech announcing the legislation.

Serious environmental infractions would be punished with as much as two months in jail, and fines of up to US$70,000. Most environmental crimes in Chile are currently handled by civil or environmental tribunals, or

n earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 rattled several Caribbean islands on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), which has been warning the Region to be prepared for a major quake, said the tremor occurred at 10:42h (local time) and was felt in Guadeloupe, Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda.

SRC said that the quake had a depth of 10 kilo-

metres (km) and was located Latitude: 15.83N; Longitude: 61.65W. It was recorded 48 km south-southwest of Pointà-Pitre, Guadeloupe, 65km north west of the Dominican capital, Roseau, and 143km south of St John's, Antigua and Barbuda.

Caribbean countries have in recent months been experiencing tremors almost on a daily basis and the SRC has warned that the Region is long overdue a major quake.

Russian rescue amid deadly blaze on 2 cargo ships off Crimea

A

t least 10 people have died in a fire involving two Tanzaniaflagged cargo vessels in the Black Sea near the Kerch Strait, authorities say.

Russian rescuers are trying to reach sailors who jumped overboard. Fourteen people have so far been rescued.

One ship is a gas tanker, and the fire reportedly followed an explosion, which set the other vessel on fire.

They were named as the Kandy, with a crew of 17 from Turkey and India, and Maestro, with 14 sailors.

focus of tension between Russia and Ukraine.

In November, Russian border guards seized three Ukrainian naval vessels near the narrow channel, which links the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov.

A court in Russia has extended by three months the detention of 24 Ukrainian sailors captured in the incident. They are accused of illegally crossing into Russian territory.

Ukraine condemned the Russian move, denying that its ships had violated the navigation laws in the area.

The strait lies off Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

Rwanda tin mine collapse kills 14 workers

ourteen people have been killed in a tin mine in eastern Rwanda after a hill collapsed on them following heavy rains, officials said.

“Because of recent rainfall in the area, part of the hill nearby collapsed and 14 miners who were getting ready for work were buried by land,” Governor of Eastern province, Fred Mufuruke told Reuters news agency on Monday.

“This is an unfortunate event that nobody expected. The accident happened when falling debris at the mining site buried all the 14 people and killed them instantly,” he told AFP news agency.

The accident took place at a cassiterite mine, a mineral which, along with the metallic ore, coltan, is a vital

component for the production of mobile phones, digital cameras and electronic products.

Small-scale mining in Rwanda’s hilly landscape has led to landslides and mine collapses. Kanyangira said 81 people died in 2018 in various mining accidents.

In October, eight people were killed and four wounded in a mine collapse in southern Rwanda’s Muhanga district.

Last month, at another mining site in southern Rwanda, five miners were trapped underground when the site collapsed. Soldiers and member of the public dug them out alive after nearly two days.

Chinese scientist who created what he said were the world’s first “gene-edited” babies evaded oversight and broke ethical boundaries in a quest for fame and fortune, state media said on Monday, as his former university said he had been fired.

He Jiankui said in November that he used a gene-editing technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 to alter the embryonic genes of twin girls born that month, sparking an international outcry about the ethics and safety of such research.

PM Theresa May says fees axed for EU citizens wanting to stay in UK

heresa May has scrapped the £65 fee millions of EU citizens were going to have to pay to secure the right to continue living in the UK after Brexit.

She also vowed to seek changes to the Irish backstop from the EU. But she again rejected calls to rule out a “no deal” Brexit - and warned another EU referendum could threaten the UK’s “social cohesion”.

Mrs May was forced to make a statement on the way forward in response to her crushing defeat last Tuesday, when MPs rejected her Brexit deal with the EU by 230 votes.

Millions of EU citizens living in the UK will have to apply for “settled status” to remain in Britain after Brexit.

Applicants must have lived in the UK for five years and had been expected to pay a fee of £65 each.

“Settled status” gives EU citizens the same access to healthcare and education after Britain leaves the EU. Mrs May told MPs she had listened to the concerns of EU citizens, through their campaign group the 3million, about the fees, and they would be waived when the scheme was launched on 30 March.

The Government launched a pilot scheme this week for people to apply for leave to remain, through a smartphone app.

erena Williams outlined why she is the favourite to win the Australian Open with a 6-1 4-6 6-4 win over top seed Simona Halep in a high-quality last-16 match.

Police, GFC seal final spots in Stag Revival Cup A

wave of excitement will wash over the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground, Bourda on Sunday as the Stag Beer Revival Cup final is staged with the GFC team doing battle to snatch the inaugural title on home turf.

The final game of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)organised tournament will no doubt be an exhilarating final encounter after it was perfectly scripted on Sunday last.

The boys from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) football team were the first to stamp their names on one of two final slots after they edged past newcomers GT Panthers in an encounter that almost went

down to the wire.

Frontrunner Steffon Ramsey was the first to score in the 37th minute, thus giving the law officers the lead in the first half. In usual fashion, Police commanded the lead, working overtime on their defence to restrict their opponents for the rest of the half.

However, GT Panthers could only be held at bay for so long.

In the 57th minute of the encounter, Sherral Daniels finally pierced the goal, after a number of wayward attempts on his team’s behalf, to level the scores. Both teams went back and forth for some time before Deon Rodney played hero for the law officers. Rodney connected with the goal in the 70th

minute, handing Police their second and winning goal.

The other game of the night was also one to watch, with enough thrills to keep the vocal crowd on the edge of their seats. The contest between Fruta Conquerors and GFC held

many uncertain moments, as two of the best Georgetown t e a m s fought hard to advance to the final.

team up, following Dellon Williams’ goal in the 35th minute. Their celebration and relaxation were shortlived when GFC made a resounding reply just three minutes later with a goal off the boots of LaVaughn Enniss.

In an anti-climax before regulation time expired, Williams of Fruta Conquerors was handed an opportunity to score in the form of a penalty in the 85th minute. The Revival Cup was launched last year by the GFA with support from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) to cater for football clubs within the Georgetown area, resuscitating the competitive spirit between the Georgetown clubs after a long time.

Opting to bat first, Lusignan A sent their opening pair to the crease; despite the overcast skies, Shazeem Ali and Steve Ramdass gave the hosts a solid start.

This partnership resulted in the Lusignan side adding 106 runs to the tally before Ramdass was trapped leg before by Rayaad Zaman for 40 (4 fours). From there, Ali carried on his innings as he notched up a fine half-century; a few minutes later he fell for 65 when he was bowled by Ajay Persaud, leaving Lusignan A on 1422.

From there on, everything went downhill for Cane Grove as Ramraj chipped away at the batting line-up to have them bowled out for 93 in 19.3 overs.

Top-scoring for Cane Grove were Chavez Ajeday with 27 and Ajay Baldeo with 24. The main strike bowlers for Lusignan A were Chanderpaul Ramraj, who bagged 6-20 and Doodnauth, who claimed 3-52.

He said he was immediately impressed by Hope the first time he saw him, when he spent a few weeks as a consultant of the Windies. In his conversations with the young batsman, the great man told him he could “add another string to your bow”. Sir Garry was again speaking to Hope, when he visited the West Indies training camp for a few hours last Saturday, at the invitation of team management.

“I saw him when the President (of Cricket West Indies) asked me to come down and do some coaching with the team for four or five weeks,” Sir Garry told Sky Sports. “The first time I saw him, I said, ‘Pfft, this is class! This is class’. This youngster has real talent and he can really play.”

Sir Garry said he noticed a few things in Hope that he could help make better.

“He had one shot that I didn’t want to take away from him because he played it all the time,” said Sobers. “[He] was hitting the off-spinners, trying to hit them through mid-off and that kind of thing.

“Never take away what a player has. Try to help him with the others or try to help him to play that shot better. After about two or three weeks watching him, I just said to him, ‘Shai, that’s your shot, don’t lose it, don’t let anybody take that away from you but I can just give you another string to your bow,” recalled Sir Garry.

Sir Sobers went on to share his coaching policy: “There are only two men behind square (on the leg-side); that’s a big area for two men to control. If you went over to the off stump a little bit, do you know how many runs you could score through there?

They can’t put anybody else there, only two.

Try it, if you can’t do it, put it away, play the way you play but just give it a try in the nets, practise it and see how it works for you.”

He said it’s about improving players, not taking away something that comes naturally to them.

Hope was also delighted that the legend found the time to come and talk to him and his team-mates. The 25-year-old has been one of the bright sparks in West Indies batting in recent years. Last year he was awarded the prestigious honour of being named of one Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

This was following his remarkable 118 not out which followed a maiden Test century of 147 in the first innings as West Indies beat England at Headingley in 2017. Hope was named Man-of-the-Match and became the first man to score a ton in both innings of any match in 118 years of first-class cricket at the famous Leeds ground.

“Sir Garry is an awesome person and it’s always great to see him and have him around. He has tremendous presence and you can learn so much from just listening to him as he speaks and shares his knowledge of the game and especially how to go about your batting,” Hope said. “Having him join us is an inspiration. It’s the kind of thing that can give you a boost ahead of a game and a series. It’s always a honour to be in his presence.

he Guyana Jaguars all-rounder Clinton Pestano has had a decent start to his Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional Four-Day Tournament, with 14 wickets with ball and 197 runs with bat.

Speaking after the fifth-round match against Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Providence, Pestano was disappointed with the loss, but was happy with how his performance are looking in the longer format.

In the Jaguars’ second match at home this season, Pestano had 4-50 with the ball in the first innings and scored a counter-attacking 46 in the first innings. uddersfield have appointed Jan Siewert to succeed David Wagner as manager. Siewert, 36, has left his position as coach of Borussia Dortmund’s second team to join the Terriers on a deal until summer 2021.

Wagner, who held the same position at Dortmund before joining Huddersfield in 2015, left the club by mutual consent on 14 January.

Huddersfield are bottom of the Premier League on 11 points - 10 adrift of safety - with 15 games remaining.

Siewert’s first game in charge will be at home to Everton on 29 January.

The club announced the appointment on Twitter with a video of a Manchester City fan from Wakefield, who was mistaken by TV for Siewert during Sunday’s game at the John Smith’s Stadium, taking a phone call in the manager’s office.

“Not now, Martin from Wakefield,” says the German, adding: “Hi, I am Jan. I am really happy to be the new head coach of Huddersfield Town.”

Mark Hudson took temporary charge for Sunday’s defeat by Manchester City.

Terriers chairman Dean Hoyle said: “We enjoyed tremendous success under our previous head coach, David Wagner, and we’ve subsequently appointed a new head coach that bears many similarities to him; a young, aspirational German from Borussia Dortmund II. “However, that does a disservice to Jan, who is his own man. There is much more to this appointment than that.”

Hoyle says the club have “succession plans in place for our key roles” and had followed Siewert’s career “with interest”.

He added: “Given David’s success at Huddersfield Town, we knew that it was prudent to look to the future in case an offer came in that he couldn’t refuse. David was fully aware that we were undertaking this work you must prepare for the future.

“Jan’s name came to our attention in his previous role as assistant manager and Under-19 coach at VfL Bochum. We first spoke with him over two years ago and we’ve kept in communication since.

“His reputation in the game is very good.

He’s known as a coach who is ambitious, has many qualities and who has strong philosophies. As such, it came as no surprise to us when he moved to one of the world’s biggest clubs, Borussia Dortmund.”

Hoyle also said that Siewert has turned down several approaches to leave Dortmund, but “jumped at the opportunity” to join the Premier League club.

“He believes in our ethos and likes what he knows about Huddersfield Town, which made me very proud,” added Hoyle.

“In the short term, we will continue to fight as hard as possible against relegation from the Premier League. We’re not giving up on that.

“We will also plan for the medium and long term, whatever the outcome. Jan is committed to us and is excited to take on the challenges we have ahead, whatever they look like.”

Greg Zuerlein’s 57-yard field goal gave the Rams a 26-23 overtime win as they beat the New Orleans Saints.

The Patriots and the Rams will meet at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Sunday, 3 February.

Escarraga reigns MYO Inter-Jamaat Softball Cricket Competition to commence on February 3 supreme at ANSA Motors inaugural tournament

t was a busy weekend on the putting greens at Lusignan with avid competition between local golfers. However, when the clubs were retired to their caddies, it was MACORP Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Guillermo Escarraga, who emerged as the best of the lot.

In excess of 50 golfers gathered at the Lusignan Golf Club to participate in three flight categories with an array of prizes, compliments of ANSA Motors up for grabs.

At the end of the day, in the 0-9 flight category, Patrick Prashad emerged as the victor with 68/9. He was followed closely by Mike Mangal (74/9) and Richard Haniff (77/9).

Competition in the 1018 category was a little more intense with the top five scoring very close to their opponents. However, Ayube Subhan had the best of the scores with 67/17.

Aasrodeen Shaw (68/16) and Ian Gouveia (69/16) finished off the podium spots in that category. Lekhnarine Shivraj (72/17) and Patanjalee Persaud (73/16) placed fourth and fifth.

The 19-28 handicap flight division was the one with the top contenders and Escarraga proved to be the best of them with a winning score of 63/22. Second and third place were taken

by Robert Hanoman (72/28) and Maxim Mangra (73/28) respectively. ANSA McAL’s Troy Cadogan (74/26) and Videsh Persaud (74/28) completed the top five.

While Escarraga was crowned the overall best golfer with a best net of 63, Patrick Prashad had the best gross of 77.

In other individual awards, Shivraj copped the accolade for the nearest to the pin.

On the other hand, Satrohan Tewari was awarded for having the longest drive.

The inaugural tournament, which was hosted

by ANSA Motors, received support from their associates Dewar’s , Top Brands Beverages and Heineken.

The tournament also had a little more spice with a wide array of different vehicle models on show.

Patrons and players ogled the showcase to the delight of Brand Coordinator Brigeshwar Arjun. Arjun expressed elation at being able to host ANSA Motors’ first tournament while having a platform to display its products.

he highly-anticipated Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) of Guyana Inter-Jamaat Softball Cricket Competition will once again hit open the 2019 season with tons of action as it is scheduled to start on February 3, 2019 at the MYO Ground, Woolford Avenue, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, Sports Committee Chairman and Senior Vice President Imran Ally stated that the intention of the Competition was to bring out the youths to do something meaningful, as from this tournament they would be able to have clean recreational fun. Fostering brother-

hood through sports is the tournament’s main objective. Ally went on to state that the tournament was usually held at least two times per year and would usually have intense action from the first ball bowled.

He also told this publication that for the many tournaments that have been held, there have been various winners, but noted that participating teams should be prepared as MYO and Farm were two of the top teams that have been dominating the competition.

In closing, Ally invited all teams to come out and register and be part of some clean exciting fun. The registration fee is $3000 per team and lots of

he action continued in the West Demerara Cricket Board’s 50 overs competition in semi-final one at Canal Polder Number Two, which saw the in-form Cornelia Ida Cricket Club (CICC) lose to McGill SC in a rain-hit thriller.

Owing to inclement weather, the game was reduced to 40 overs per side.

CICC won the toss and decided to bat first at the Canal Number Two Ground as they intended to post a big total.

The CICC players, while attacking the ball, played with patience and were able to post 211-5 off 38 overs as the rains came once again, forcing play to be stopped.

CICC were given the advantage as their secret weapon, Guyana Jaguars middle-order batsman Akshaya Persaud returned.

Persaud scored his fourth consecutive half-century of the tournament which included six boundaries and four maximums.

Confident Moeen ready to shine for England in the Caribbean

oeen Ali is ready to accept the responsibility of being England’s leading spinner in Test cricket ahead of the series against West Indies, as the tourists consider their bowling options for the first game in Barbados.

England recorded an impressive 3-0 series whitewash over Sri Lanka at the end of last year, with Moeen taking 18 wickets as part of a three-pronged spin attack that also included Jack Leach and Adil Rashid, who claimed 18 and 12 scalps respectively.

However, team management must decide whether to stick with the trio who featured in the subcontinent or instead make changes in the Caribbean, with the use of the Dukes ball likely to see the seamers more heavily involved than they were in Sri Lanka.

Moeen could, therefore, end up being the only slow bowler in the side, though he is happy to carry the burden after a productive return to the team since he was dropped for the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch last March.

“I wouldn’t find it as difficult to be the only spinner in the side as I once probably did,” Ali said in an interview with Sky Sports.

“I’ve played quite a bit now and I feel like at this moment in time my bowling is at its best in terms of my control and my work with Saqlain [Mushtaq, England’s spin coach] on my mindset.

“I will happily take on that responsibility as I have done it on other occasions but I loved having the other guys (in the side) as well.”

While England have to work out their best attack to suit the conditions at the Kensington Oval, the batting lineup appears to be clear, at least

for the start of the series.

Jonny Bairstow is set to continue at number three after his hundred in the final Test against Sri Lanka, with Moeen having started the series in that position before dropping down the order.

The Worcestershire all-rounder feels more at home in the middle, affording him the opportunity to play in an aggressive manner.

“If I’m bowling a lot it is difficult to bat three,” he said.

“It is a very tough position and I feel it is for someone who can bat a long time and score big runs and I can’t do that!

“I feel like I am quite important down the order, can change the momentum of the game and I like that role.”

Dhaniram Azamudeen, who played a patient knock of 54 that included 4 fours and 4 sixes. The only other batsman to make double figures was Mohammad Wazidali with 11 as no other form of support was offered.

Leading the bowling for McGill was Amar Deen who bagged 2-41 while Balram Aron, Daniel Basdeo, and Travis Persaud took one wicket each.

The rain then came again as it showed intention of disrupting the innings of the McGill SC; however, the Duckworth-Lewis method was implemented and a new score was devised – the batting team now needed 153 off 27 overs.

McGill SC chased the revised total down with a few hiccups along the way as they

reached the target of 157-8 in 26.4 overs.

Leading the innings for McGill was Prahalad Singh, who stroked a brilliant 70 not out, which included 8 sixes. He was ably supported by Daniel Basdeo, who stroked a resistant 20, which included 2 sixes. Persaud then claimed 4-22 for CICC as Richie Looknauth bagged 2-12 while Naveed Alli and Wazidali took one wicket each.

England tour of the West Indies…

1st Test bowls off tomorrow; bowlers may dominate series – Kookaburra balls replaced by swinging Dukes

he first Test match will bowl off tomorrow, Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 10:00h at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The Jason Holder-led West Indies team will have at the back of their minds that the Duke ball will suit the English swingkings, Stuart Broad and James Anderson. In the last five Test matches between West Indies and England, West Indies lost three matches and won two. The Duke balls that will be used in the Test series are slightly altered from those used in England: they last longer in the abrasive Caribbean conditions.

tered a five-wicket win against the Englishmen at the familiar Kensington Oval venue. Jamaican Jermaine Blackwood was the star of the show, in his player-ofthe-match performance that saw Windies chase down a target of 192. England took first strike in that encounter and scored 257 runs all out, with Alistair Cook scoring 105 and Moeen Ali contributing 58. Jerome Taylor and Jason Holder had three wickets each in a disciplined bowling effort. Windies’ first innings saw a familiar batting collapse when they were bundled out for 189, with Blackwood scoring an aggressive 85.

Taylor repeated their disciplined bowling performance with three wickets each. Darren Bravo and Jermaine Blackwood took Windies over the line with scores of 82 and 47* respectively.

The other instance where West Indies defeated the Englishmen was the monumental win when Shai Hope’s twin centuries took the Caribbean team across the line.

West Indies have included two newbies in the squad for the upcoming match in Shamarh Brooks and John Campbell. Brooks is a 30-year-old middle-order Barbadian batsman, who came through the ranks, as a natural leader. The right hander played 67 First-Class matches scoring 3347 runs at an average of 33, including five centuries and 19 half-centuries.

Meanwhile, Campbell is the more likely candidate for the first Test to open the batting with Kraigg Brathwaite. Campbelle is a 25-year-old left-handed Jamaican opener, who has 55 First-Class matches under his belt.

The elegant Campbell has 3037 runs at an average of 30 with three centuries and 18 half-centuries.

Darren Bravo, who is returning to the Test squad, will bring his wealth of experience to the table. He is expected to play his 50th Test on Wednesday; the stroke maker has 3400 Test runs at an average of exactly 40 with eight centuries and 16 half-centuries.

The classy Hope will be the batsman to watch out for along with the dangerous Shimron Hetmyer and the valuable all-rounders, Jason Holder and Roston Chase. Shane Dowrich is expected to score some runs in the lower order for the West Indies. Windies bowling department will be led by Shannon Gabriel, Kemar Roach and the ever-consistent Holder.

England players have acclimatised in the pair of two-day matches played at the Three Ws Oval; the batting will be led by worldclass batsman Joe Root, and the bowling department will heavily depend on Anderson and Broad.

The England Head Coach Trevor Bayliss is hoping that the specially designed Duke balls play into their hands in the Test series. Research has shown that the English bowlers struggle with the Kookaburra balls, but the England team had their first look at the ball in the practice matches, where

they took 30 wickets in two days.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) executive Johnny Grave decided that the use of the Duke ball would provide more entertaining cricket to avoid the attritional encounters that were seen in recent times.

However, Graves believes that the Windies bowling attack is potent, although Anderson and Broad have 998 Test wickets between themselves.

Test series between England and West Indies in the past have been exhilarating contests; from the Brian Lara record-breaking feat and the Jerome Taylor burst to English support from the large “Barmy army”. Looking beyond Test series between these two teams, the World T20 final in 2016 which England will always remember for the Caribbean team ending their World T20 dreams.

The Kensington Oval is expected to be transformed into an exciting stage, where Windies and the Caribbean supporters will battle against their former masters.

Crandon in CWI-named trio of Assistant Coaches for busy cricket season C

ricket West Indies (CWI) has added experienced former Caribbean and international players to its coaching team as the Windies prepare for an upcoming busy cricket season, beginning with a series of engagements with the touring England side this week.

Former West Indies all-rounder Vasbert Drakes, former Guyana all-rounder Esuan Crandon and former Middlesex and Sussex batsman Toby Radford are teaming up in the Caribbean to assist newly-appointed interim Head Coach of the Windies Men’s team, Englishman Richard Pybus.

The newly assigned Assistant Coaches are currently working to prepare the Caribbean team for its test campaign against the English, which opens on Wednesday at Kensington Oval with the first of three test matches. The two teams will play three tests, five one-day internationals and three T20 Internationals.

“It is an honour to be back

working with West Indies cricket again,” said Drakes, coach of the 2016 West Indies women champions during the ICC Women’s World T20. “As someone who played the game at the highest level, it has always been my wish to contribute to West Indies cricket and give back to the young players. We have a tremendous group of players here, full of ambition and hungry for success.

Our role as coaches is to offer leadership and sound advice and to share knowledge and create an environment of learning. I want to see West Indies cricket grow and flourish.”

Crandon, who coached the Guyana Jaguars to four consecutive Regional First-class titles, is also keen to work with the players, most of whom he is familiar with.

“I am passionate about the game of cricket and a true supporter of West Indies cricket, so ultimately I want to make a contribution to the game in the re-

gion and see the players perform at their best,” he said. “I am a calm individual and I’m here to do what is required to help the team succeed … that’s what I enjoy doing, coaching and helping others.”

Radford, who served as an assistant coach of the championship-winning 2012 Windies men’s team during the ICC World T20 competition and a former head coach of the West Indies High Performance Centre, joins his Caribbean colleagues along with former Pakistan legend Mushtaq Ahmed, who will continue in his role as spin bowling consultant.

Head coach Richard Pybus was the architect of the West Indies trifecta of 2016 World Cup titles (World T20, Women’s World T20 and Under-19 World Cup) while serving as Windies cricket director. He will receive assistance from the coaching team for the tour of England, the Triangular Series in Ireland, the 2019 Cricket World Cup (CWC), and the visit of India in July and August. (CWI)
