Truck driver in deadly Greenwich Park accident further remanded
Armed bandits stormed a Chinese Supermarket at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and harassed customers before exiting with an unknown sum of cash. This publication understands that that incident occurred at around 19:15h on Tuesday, April 18.
Speaking with this publication on Wednesday, one of the victims shared that the robbery, which lasted for about three minutes, took place just as she and her husband were about to cash out and leave the supermarket.
She related that she and her husband had stopped to purchase water and some groceries, and while she was at the cashier, her husband had ventured outside to get a bottle of water. That was when two armed men entered the store and approached her, demanding money.
“I was cashing out our items, and he went to get the water from outside, where the Chinese usually have it, to put [in] the car. So, as I turn and I finish paying the cashier, I saw two guys walking coming in, and one of them come to me and say, ‘Give me the money you have!’,” she said.
“I was on the ground, my husband tried to console me, he [a bandit] was pointing the gun to him and telling him, ‘Not a word…don’t say anything’, and he turn and he tell the bandit, ‘She’s not well, that’s why she’s crying’, and he (the bandit) said, ‘You don’t hear what I said?! Y’all don’t make a sound! Don’t move!’,” she shared.
According to the victim, she did not get a good look at the perpetrators. However, from what she could remember, they were both wearing hats.
Investigations are ongoing.
Ewart Stewart, the 38-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a speeding truck on March 6 when it became uncontrollable and slammed into a Route 32 minibus, killing five persons, has been further remanded to prison. A resident of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, Stewart made another court appearance on Monday, April 17, before Senior Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court. He was on. Stewart is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Ganesh Hira.
Police Headquarters report that the truck driver Stewart has also been charged with driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving an uncertified motor vehicle. He has been granted bail for these two charges in the sum of $20,000 after pleading not guilty.
Prowell was the driver of a minibus in which the four other deceased persons

Reports are that motor lorry GZZ 2285, driven by Stewart, was proceeding east along the northern side of the Greenwich Park Public Road at a fast rate of speed behind motor car PWW 836.
The lorry driver alleges that the driver of the car made a sudden stop to allow a pedestrian to cross the road, and he swerved to the right to avoid a collision with the car, but, in the process, he collided with the minibus, which not required to enter a plea for any of the five indictable charges that he faces: which allege that he caused the death of 72-yearold Margaret Kennedy of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE); 57-yearold Olga Reddy of Parika, EBE; 50-year-old Vernon Prowell of Bent Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown; 40-year-old Elvis Charles of Ruby, EBE; and 71-yearold Stella Parhoo of Parika, EBE; and he has been further remanded to pris- were passengers at the time of the accident. Several others passengers were seriously injured following that horrific accident which occurred on the Greenwich Park Public Road, EBE on the morning of March 6. was proceeding from the opposite direction.



Those injured are: 21-yearold Shemar Alleyne of Tuschen, EBE; 46-year-old Samuel Ramda of Tuschen, EBE; 64-year-old Selmont Brisport of Tuschen, EBE; Samuel Ramdas of Ruby Backdam, EBE; and Junior Jack, 25, of Tuschen, EBE.
The impact of the crash also caused a Guyana Power and Light (GPL) pole to break and fall into a house in the area. However, no one was injured in the home.
Following the accident, a party of Policemen visited the scene and carried out an investigation. A breath analysis carried out on the driver of the motor lorry showed a reading of .00%.
