he Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) was created to ensure that Caricom member states have equal access to a central economic zone without hurdles to facilitate the free move-

However, President Dr Irfaan Ali has contended that Guyana has been treated quite unfairly by Caricom when it comes to trading goods, explaining that the country has been trying for years to get its produce on the CSME with very little progress.

“We have been trying to get our produce into one of our closest partners, Caricom, and we are still trying for years. This has to change. We have facilitated investments from other Caricom countries, from other partners without any hurdle,” the Head of State said, adding that Guyana’s Private Sector never came out and complained.

“Our Private Sector never said to the Government “scale back”. The fact of the matter is we have not been treated the same way. Its fact, it has to change,” the President told stakeholders at the launching of the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

plained that it took a number of years for Guyana to just get its ice cream in some of the Caricom markets when the process should have been fairly hurdle-free.

He called on the local Private Sector to band together to advocate for equal access to the markets they are entitled to under the CSME agreement.

“I have asked the Foreign Affairs Ministry to bring a list of all the hurdles we have in every single market in Caricom and we are going to put together a joint team of the Private Sector and the Government to break down those hurdles. To get our products in,” Ali informed.

He reiterated that Guyana remains a safe

place to invest, adding that Government stands committed to facilitating hurdle-free investments.

However, Ali also reminded that while his Government will be facilitating investments, it also has the responsibility to ensure that the local Private Sector does not encounter hurdles when doing business elsewhere.

“Canada has been a very important partner. Establishment of the Guyana-Canada Chambers represents an overwhelming vote of confidence in our country’s future. It signals high expectations for Guyana’s economic prospects. It is important for us to understand that we don’t want Chambers to be falling apart. The world is expressing confidence on Guyana economy…

Government has to ensure we work closely with the Private Sector to realise those expectations,” he noted.

Despite accusations of being too business-friendly, Ali noted that his Government is on the path to become even more so, explaining that businesses help to create wealth, generate jobs and it is the role of Government to help facilitate the growth and development of businesses whilst at the same time facilitating the development of its human resources.

Awards Ceremony, President Ali challenged the local Private Sector to be bold and more aggressive in its negotiations with Caricom in order to break the existing trade barriers.

The Head of State had pointed out that this is not only a duty for the Government, but the Private Sector must also take up responsibility in asserting its place nationally and within the region. He said that not only has the Private Sector been included on State Boards, but it was a Private Sector leader who led the local content dialogue. He was referring to GMSA President Shyam Nokta, who chaired the Local Content Panel that presented its first report to Government.

To this end, he emphasised the need for the local Private Sector to prepare itself to capitalise on the scale of opportunities that will come its way.

Constitutions and Constitutionalism

C

onstitutions describe the allocation of State powers among the various branches of Government, as defined by the Constitution itself; prescribe the rules by which those powers would be conferred, and also includes procedures by which the Constitution may be altered. In a fundamental sense therefore, it is, or should be, the embodiment of the social contract crafted by the people of a country for their governance.

In a divided society such as Guyana, it is most important that the institutions created by the social contract are seen as just. As John Rawls declared, “Justice is the first virtue of social institutions as truth is of systems of thought.” For this reason, those elite bodies that are arrogating to themselves not only the right to initiate talks on ‘constitutional change”, but are insisting on presenting their proposals without taking them to the people, are placing the cart before the horse. President Ali has clearly stated that constitutional change will only come out of widespread consultations with the Guyanese nation.

It is ironic that the British, who have done so much to entrench the idea of modern constitutions as written rules that all citizens of a state have to be governed by – the rule of law - themselves do not have a written constitution. The anomaly, however, should remind us that rules, in and of themselves, may be necessary but are not sufficient to ensure the consent of the governed. The rules have to be embedded within, and be supported by a wider political culture that gives life to the rules.

This British idiosyncrasy of doling out written constitutions to its colonies while refusing to do the same for itself masked the reality of the need for the development of the wider network of informal traditions, accommodations, informal pro quid quos that make the British unwritten constitutional rules function. It is this aspect of constitutional rule that has always escaped the PNC from the onset of their entry into Guyanese politics in 1959. They were formed out of a mixture of overweening ambition of Burnham and the desire of the US to oust the PPP from power. It was not surprising that the former had to close their eyes to the excesses of the latter after they were given office.

Western constitutionalism arose out of the struggle for personal freedom and escape from arbitrary political will. Guyanese should certainly resonate to this struggle.

Constitutionalism is a foundation stone of Liberalism, and defines a political scheme in which law, rather than men, is supreme. Political authority is exercised according to law, which is to be obeyed by all, including the governors, who cannot depart from it by whim. By definition, then, a constitutional government is a limited government, and as such, PNC innovations such as “party paramountcy” are anathema to constitutional rule.

The constitution, as observed above, can be regarded as a social contract agreed to by the government and which defines its legitimate political actions. This implies that all state power emanates from the people, and that sovereignty and all reserved powers remain with the people.

Constitutionalism, then, is infused with the ideology of Liberalism, which views men as naturally free and rightbearing individuals who need and establish governments that they can, may, and should control.

In Guyana, where we cannot pretend that our values were shaped by some commonality looming out of a hoary past, it should be self-evident that the several groups need to sit down together and craft a social contract.

Our present constitution, while it has been extensively modified following the PNC-fostered riots after the 1997 elections, is still based on the 1980 Constitution foisted on the nation by Forbes Burnham and his PNC back in 1980.

As the PPP embarks on its second effort to rule democratically after rigging excesses by the PNC, maybe President Irfaan Ali can ask Granger, incumbent leader of the PNC, whether he is prepared to accept the supremacy of the constitution, crafted in the main by his own leader.

Sanitise the Guyana Elections Commission

Dear Editor, What is the reaction of the masses when the PNC speak about democracy, the rule of law, and upholding the Constitution? They see it as hypocrisy to the core!

It seems that the holding of Local Government Elections on a timely basis is all that is required to bear testimony that the PNC respect the Constitution. Harmon seems to forget that during their 5-year term in office they continuously disregarded and violated our Constitution, spurned the rule of law, and attempted on more than one occasion to kill democracy.

The PNC should never ever utter the word ‘democracy’. The PNC’s pretensive cries about holding the LGE before ‘sanitising’ GECOM and getting rid of the PNC riggers must not be allowed to gain traction. We must be cognisant of the fact that the democratic process in our country is triggered by GECOM holding free and fair elections.

We have seen, for five long months, the many tireless attempts by the PNC-controlled faction of GECOM to rig the 2020 Elections in favour of the PNC-dominated Coalition.

The justice system was com-

promised in some instances, but Democracy owes a debt of gratitude to Chief Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire, who upheld the Rule of Law despite many attempts by the Coalition to influence her decision through street protests.

From those 5 months, it is clear that democracy would die unless the PPP/C can now ensure that all the corrupt players within GECO are surgically removed. The Mingoes, the Lowenfields and the Myerses must be expunged.

It is time that GECOM, especially in key positions, be staffed with persons who are of high integrity and are politically neutral.

Recently, after making a few subtle threats about not holding the LGE as it is constitutionally due, such as, ‘the PPP is insulting the Guyanese Nation’; ‘there will be pressure,’ and ‘we will internationalise the issue’, Harmon then summed up by stating that ‘Protest is one form of action, there are other forms which we are considering, but the PPP must understand that we will not sit by and see them trample on the rights of Guyanese people, we will not sit by and see them violate our Constitution with

impunity’.

Again, the threat of protest action and violent protests are the only tactic which the PNC are adept at; they have nothing else to contribute to nation building. The former President, Granger, backed his buddy by saying that President Ali does not have the right to ‘toy’ with the Constitution. Well, of course only Granger has that ‘right’ and prerogative. President Ali was clear that: ‘I am not getting into Local Government Elections now. As a people and the media…what we have to do is to fix what is there first, and we have to ensure that we have a system that is working, and a system that people trust, and a system that is professional, and a system that operates in an unbiased manner, so that the people of our country can contribute’.

Vice President Jagdeo added a further clarification when he said that funds would be set aside for the holding of those elections, but he maintained that “criminal elements” attached to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) must be removed.

What is so wrong with

that, when Guyanese here and in the diaspora and the world at large witnessed the most shameless and blatant attempt by the GECOM CEO and the Deputy CEO, the Returning Officer of Region 4 and other GECOM officials to rig the 2020 Elections? They will have to be replaced before any election is held.

Granger, Harmon and the PNC must know that the PPP/C is never afraid to hold any election, be it General or Local Government. The astounding defeats in 2016 and 2018 of the Coalition by the PPP/C and the recent defeat at the 2020 General Elections may have caused some irreparable memory loss.

The holding of LGE is no doubt high on the Government’s agenda, but GECOM must be sanitised, since we have seen the destructive nature of its current form for 5 long and painful months. The dreaded COVID-19 came second place since the entire nation was ‘infected’. Clearly, we cannot afford to take such high risks in the future.

Playing for time, playing forget Dear Editor, Some operatives at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) seem to be playing for time. In the last few days, we have witnessed a galore of GECOM advertisements in the widely circulated printed and social media. No doubt, players in the secretariat have been at the forefront of several suspicious activities without providing any clarification in the past, and remained silent even when relevant questions were asked. It leaves one pensive about the source of the directives, while the CEO and

many under his control increasingly show that they had no care about transparency or the need to have policies acceptable to our citizenry.

In the lead-up to and after the March 2020 elections, key operatives within the GECOM staff at the Secretariat demonstrated regrettable defiance that even overwhelmed the constitutional requirements of the organisation. They openly usurped the role of the GECOM Commission while showing disrespect to anyone who dared to query as they manoeuvred every advantage

with the support of the PNC Commissioners. There were certainly more questions than answers from the Commission and Secretariat as PNC Commissioners provided various irrational open-ended counter positions that defied reason.

Of course, there were some definitive interventions

by Madam Claudette Singh who was appointed as the new Chairwoman, following the heavy damage allowed

by Mr Granger’s unilateral appointee James Patterson, who had to be removed by the

Caribbean Court of Justice.

The termination of what was becoming a very contaminated house-to-house exercise was certainly necessary and appropriately done.

The expressed confidence in Lowenfield, however, proved to be almost fatal, as he imposed initially subtle manoeuvres which later became flagrant and outlandish.

Nevertheless, many other areas required interventions and clarity as CEO Keith Lowenfield did his ‘salsa dance’ to the drums of Vincent Alexander et al. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

President impresses after 4 months

Dear Editor, It is just over four months since President Irfaan Ali was sworn in on August 2, and a poll conducted by this writer reveals very high ratings of Ali and his government, on their performance and for their policies.

The latest poll, conducted from November 8 to coincide with the first 100 days in office, thru now, shows that Guyanese of all ethnicities are very satisfied with the performance of the Ali-led administration. Respondents express a lot of confidence in the administration to rebuild the wrecked economy inherited from the APNU-led coalition.

Polling data and interviews with respondents suggest there is optimism about the future of the country under this administration. Not only are the Government and President doing well in their approval ratings, but the peoples’ lives are also improving through

Government-sponsored initiatives, grants, and prompt responses to complaints.

People condemn the attempt to rig the outcome of the March 2020 Election, and feel GECOM must be cleansed of attempted riggers. They are supportive of prosecution of those involved in rigging, and they want GECOM to be reformed and cleansed to prevent future rigging.

Respondents also overwhelmingly condemn the racial violence in West Berbice, and those political figures behind it.

Right after swearing in, the Ali government seized the opportunity to ground with the people by addressing their basic needs. The President quickly set the direction of the new Government, and people are very supportive of the President’s decision to take Government to the people and interact with communities.

Ministers are grounding with the people, something

that was missing among most Ministers under the Coalition, and the public applauds this initiative. The President has fulfilled most of his 100 days’ promises, and respondents describe the Government’s performance as superior to that of the preceding coalition.

Many who did not vote for the PPP welcome the change in Government, which took place on August 2, because of the progress being made since then, and they also condemn those previous ministers and bureaucrats who attempted to steal the election.

People are also supportive of US involvement to protect the outcome of the elections, and they overwhelmingly approve of the visit to Guyana by the American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. They want closer relations with America, saying it would bring development and progress to the country. Some even say Guyana should enter into an

alliance with America, or even consider becoming an affiliated territory of USA’s.

Further, respondents express support for the reopening of GuySuCo, praising the PPP for honouring a manifesto promise that would create jobs and lead to greater circulation of money, while also boosting economic growth.

But, on Exxon, they would have liked for the oil contract to be revisited. They welcome the oil exploration and investment, but feel Guyana deserves more than 2% royalty. They blame the APNU-led coalition for what they describe as a blunder in the contract negotiation.

Respondents overwhelmingly feel the nation has been deprived of a fair amount of royalty. They say it was a poor deal.

“We didn’t bargain for the right amount” aptly describes the national view.

Asked to identify the most serious problems facing the Government, uppermost in peo-

ples’ minds are crime, COVID, and the economy (cost of living and joblessness); those are followed by race relations, infrastructure, agriculture, health and political instability, among other issues. Respondents feel that Government needs to do more on the crime front.

A large majority of respondents are thankful that the Coalition is gone. They describe the Coalition as a burden on the backs of the working class and poor, taxing people on almost everything, and lacking accountability. They praise the Government for being very active in the fight against COVID, and on issues of health care.

Almost everyone praises the PPP for the $25K COVID grant per household. The President has very high approval ratings, with the lowest approval ratings in history bettering predecessors by far – an indication of how supportive people are of the President at this time.

Lady Arya Ali, also came in for praise for her public duties and initiatives to improve the standard of living. Opposition Leader Joe Harmon trails Irfaan Ali in ratings.

All of the ministers have been praised for their activism and performance.

Respondents say Attorney General Nandlall and Timothy Jonas are deserving of Silk (Senior Counsel status). They were outstanding during the legal battle against the election fraud, and in explaining the election legalese lingo to the public.

Overall, people say they are impressed with how much President Ali has learned and accomplished in his first four months in office. But they advise that he does not ease up with his performance, as much work remains to be done.

Traffic accidents have become Playing for time,... a pandemic in Guyana

Dear Editor, There has recently been a massive increase in traffic accidents, and this has resulted in a substantial upsurge in fatalities on our highways. The nation has not been able to come to grips with the fact that, since the turn of the century, traffic fatalities have been on a constant increase every year.

For example, statistics released by the Traffic Department indicate that fatalities on Guyana’s roadways have increased by some 42% during the period January 1, 2020 to September 14, 2020, compared to an increase of 37% during the same period in 2019. Data obtained from the Police show that motorcyclists are the victims in a large number of cases, and that these fatal accidents occur on our highways mostly on weekends.

On an annual average, there have been 117 traffic accidents that have resulted in 133 deaths between 2005 and 2018, which means that there has been at least one traffic death for every traffic accident. The World Health Organization estimates that, in terms of traffic deaths, Guyana ranked 94th in the world with 17.3 traffic deaths per 100,000 population.

The influx of approximately 10,000 modern, computerised vehicles annually into Guyana has placed severe strain on the country’s roads, which in turn has led to a steep rise in traffic infractions and deaths.

Governments past and present have been unable to cope with the rapid increase of vehicles, and have failed to institute safeguards on the highways to curb the horrific numbers of road accidents, some of which have led to deaths and permanent disability.

Most traffic accidents are caused by inebriated and reckless drivers, who normally leave the scene of accidents so as to avoid breathalyser tests, charges of causing death by dangerous driving, and the suspension of their drivers’ li-

cence. Legislation to punish errant drivers and motor cyclists by imposing and mandating the use of safety devices such as seat belts and safety helmets is already in place, but, in many cases, are not being enforced by the Police.

Carnage on the roads in Guyana has reached crisis proportions, and it seems there is no end to this scourge in sight.

Almost every day, someone is killed or maimed in a traffic accident. If this trend continues, there is no telling what will happen.

Road fatalities continue to devastate the country and decimate its people. It has become a major problem, and is wreaking havoc on the lives of those who have to cope with the pain and loss of loved ones. In recent times, mostly youths have been the victims; struck down in some cases by inexperienced drivers, and in other cases by drunken and speeding drivers.

Most drivers do not show even the slightest remorse for their roles in the mayhem, as their vehicles have become killing machines.

The mayhem on our roads continues unabated, and there seems to be no comprehensive strategy to combat it and ease the suffering. Hardly a day passes without heartbreaking messages being conveyed to families about the death of their loved ones. It may sound repetitive, but there are too many reckless and drunken drivers on our roads.

How much more can people take before a solution is found?

Nothing seems to guarantee safety on the roads today. Very few drivers obey the rules and observe the speed limits, and they seem not to care for their own lives, much less the lives of others. How many more will have to die before the slaughter on the roads ends? What kind of society have we become? It seems that the Police have given up on saving lives on our roads, as traffic fatalities have become an epidemic in the coun-

try. Plans must be developed to deal with what is arguably one of the most unsettling problems facing the nation. The carnage on the roads is disconcerting. Meaningful intervention is urgently needed to make the roads safer, end the fatalities and the pain, and stop the suffering of the people.

Drivers, young and old, male and female, should be properly trained to accept the responsibility which comes with being behind the wheel of a vehicle. They need to know that the road system comprises four elements: (i) the roads (ii) vehicles and (iii) drivers and pedestrians. They interact with each other, and sometimes with other external elements such as animals and the weather; therefore, it is important for drivers to understand the nature of this interaction, and the likelihood and severity of risks associated with them if the rules are not followed.

Some have argued that drivers are not the only ones to blame for the traffic fatalities.

Unfortunately, this is true, because many of our roads and highways suffer from poor quality pavement surface, narrow lanes, poor signage and lane demarcation, illegal lane changes, and the absence of proper street lighting required for night driving. Law enforcement officials have apparently done all they can so far, but they have not been able to reduce the spate of accidents and fatalities on the roads. While those in authority talk about curbing traffic fatalities, lives are still being lost daily on our roads. The roads have become, and continue to be, the country’s death chamber. How many more lives can we afford to lose in this manner? Traffic accidents have become the new pandemic in Guyana. However, it is not beyond us to end the human slaughter on the roads.

Our society is a small one, and should be manageable.

The now exposed fraudulent attempts demand a thorough clean up approach led by the Chairwoman and Commission. Such undertakings cannot be acceptably pursued in the presence of the now charged Secretariat employees. Aside from the ongoing court matters, the Guyanese nation is not aware of any reasonable remedial action being taken by the GECOM Commission.

The position seems to be taken by GECOM that our people may soon forget the traumatic period of March to August 2020.

As evidence of the foregoing, several hefty advertisements are in the print media regarding contracts for things to be done at GECOM. The ‘million-dollar question’ on the streets, however, is in which hotel and bar would these contracts be awarded? It is quite distasteful and unbelievable that Keith Lowenfield and his cabal are still being allowed to be addressing the awarding of contracts at GECOM. Further, all those who are before the courts must be sent on administrative leave, and consideration for replacement options considered. These people are not working, and are not at their desks, but at the same time they are accumulating annual leave.

Editor, everything regarding the failed coup in the 2020 National and Regional Elections must be fully ventilated. It is of course unprecedented that the CEO of the GECOM Secretariat would fail to produce his copies of the Statements of Poll. There has been the use of GECOM funds (not approved by the Commission) to pay legal fees protecting and defend irrational and frivolous challenges by the PNC to standard, precedent-based interpretations of our Constitution. GECOM also remained silent on

the fearful blocking of the Carter Center from returning to Guyana to scrutinise the ‘Recount,’ and this must not be forgotten. Further, the genuine attempts to stop the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) initiative to resolve the issues surrounding the Elections must be uncovered.

Other critical observations and areas which merit a closer and detailed examination include the mysterious calls directing the Foreign Minister to throw out the observers, and the crude approach by the GECOM and PNC personnel to block the eminent local and international observers from overlooking the counting process. The issue of the Commissioner of Police certifying that hundreds of voters were out of the country, who turned up in their numbers to verify that they were legitimate voters on Election Day, is of significant concern. Very serious was the unavailability and disappearance of the Chairperson of GECOM and her locking up in a room at the Splashmins Building.

Not least by any means are the financial irregularities connected to the payment of GECOM phantom staff that were paid to do the corrupt work that must be exposed.

Editor, the nation demands the truth, and there no longer are avenues for the contaminated to shield themselves with the veil of constitutional autonomy. Much has been overdone, and the organisation must be thoroughly cleaned before it is qualified to be veiled once again.

It is now imperative that all GECOM-related events which took place from the 21st December 2018, and particularly within the last five months before the swearing in of Dr Irfaan Ali as President, are fully examined to ensure that appropriate systems are put in place to prevent Guyana from being exposed to such ordeals in the future.

The current status quo of playing forget and playing for time will not work!

elf-esteem plays a significant role in the development of healthy children. Children with high self-esteem generally become more successful in life.

Unfortunately, the outcomes for children with low self-esteem can be quite poor. As a parent, your child’s self-esteem is largely your responsibility. There is a lot you can do to help your child to feel confident and competent.

Children with high self-esteem have the confidence to try new activities and feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments. While it’s never pleasant to fail, these kids possess the emotional ability to withstand lack of success, as well as maintain the courage to try again.

Kids with low self-esteem are selfcritical and have difficulty being positive when making mistakes. This may lead to the child not being able to try again, or refusing the next opportunity to be successful.

Children can be sensitive and have a peer group that can be quite harsh, so as a parent, what you do at home matters tremendously. It’s critical that your child possesses a healthy reserve of self-esteem, which will also serve as a buffer to survive the unpleasantness of other kids.

Give your child the best chance to thrive and be happy.

Use the following strategies to help your child feel good about themselves: 1. Love your child unconditionally.

Every child should believe that no matter what they do – success or failure – their parents still love them and will continue to be there for them. Consider the impact it has on a child’s selfesteem when they believe they’re

only loved when they behave a certain way or achieve a specific result.

2. Help your child to set achievable goals. Few things are more beneficial to self-esteem than success. Work with your child to establish these goals.

Begin with goals that are very easy to accomplish. Give your child a taste of success and the confidence boost that goes along with it. For example, a good goal for a young child might be to clean their room.

3. Encourage persistence. Success and persistence go hand-in-hand. Find courage in your child to be persistent, and you are showing them how to be successful. Praise your child when they stick with a difficult challenge and don’t give up. One way you can help your child is to set a good example. Demonstrate what it means to persevere.

4. Give your child choices. It’s hard to have self-esteem when you don’t have any control over your life. To provide a sense of self-control, give your child choices. This can be as simple as giving

them two options for lunch or allowing them to choose what shoes they wear that day.

5. Discourage perfection.

Discourage your child from attempting to be perfect—a game that no one can win. Your child’s self-esteem will suffer when they realise that they can never be perfect. Show your child that you value effort and progress. These are actions that anyone can achieve.

6. Avoid over-praising. Your child knows when your praise is excessive. Give praise when recognition is due. Also, praise your child for making a good effort. It should be noted that excessive praise has been shown to hurt a child’s confidence rather than boost it.

7. Allow your child to overhear you complimenting them. A child gets a big boost to their self-esteem when they hear a parent praising them to another adult. Your children are always watching you. Use that to your advantage.

8. Take good care of yourself. Taking good care of yourself shows your child that you’re important. They will believe that they’re important and should take care of themselves as well. You can model how to make themselves a priority.

There’s no doubt that a child with high self-esteem is happier and more confident. We want the best for our children, so it’s our responsibility to help lead our children down this path. What we do at home can have a significant impact on our children’s future. Teach your children to love and believe in themselves, and they’ll reap the benefits throughout their entire lives. Just then a swallow flew by, twittering merrily, and the young man, thinking summer had come, hastened off to a clothes dealer, to whom he sold all the clothes he wore down to his very tunic.

Mazaruni inmate busted with drugs, contraband

A

n inmate at the Mazaruni Prison was busted with contraband items along with a quantity of cannabis.

Reports are the 40-year-old prisoner was found with the items at the facility at 11:00h on Friday.

Reports are prison officers attached to the Mazaruni Prison, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), received information that the prisoner had the items in his possession, and confronted him.

Shortly after, the inmate took the officers to an area aback the prison and dug up the items which were concealed in a white plastic bag.

Guyana Times was told that a further search was conducted on the bag, which revealed five parcels wrapped with transparent plastic, which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems. The cannabis was weighed and amounted to 584g.

…sodomy efore your Eyewitness gets to the “topic de jour”, he would like to vent on one of the most ridiculous idiosyncrasies of Guyanese life: the easy acceptance of folks just giving themselves all sorts of fancy titles to “authorise” their pronouncements. Now, this practice, in and of itself, is normally pretty harmless. Folks have always harboured all sorts of delusions of grandeur. Remember those dishevelled “prophets” who used to walk around with signboards on their chests announcing “the end of the world is nigh”?

Then there were our calypsonians who’d ironically dub themselves “King” (Fighter) or “Lord” (Kitchener) etc. just to poke fun at the arrogance of the self-appointed “royals” who ruled over us. But the world at large understood what was at play and didn’t give the titles any mind. But nowadays, your Eyewitness has noticed, newspapers are giving credence to the grandiose titles arrogated by some attention-seeking nitwits, and publishing their views as if they represent constituencies!!

Take this fella who signs a constant stream of letters to the press as “Mr. Jamil Changlee, Chairman, The Cooperative Republicans of Guyana”. Now, your Eyewitness already has a problem with people who sign as “Mr”. Does anyone introduce themselves to others as “Mr This” or “Mr That” unless they have an inferiority complex? But it’s the group to which he has made himself “Chairman” and on whose behalf he purports to speak that’s even harder to swallow. Has anyone ever seen this group engaged in any sort of activity in Guyana? Does it exist outside the fevered brow of Changlee? Sorta reminds one of Keith Scott and his “National Front Alliance” - which was just a “front” for his “alliance” with himself to get a “national” occupation!!

Anyhow, the Changlee fella - sounding suspiciously like the “Pagalee” Minister - in just the last couple of days, came up with two howlers. First, he said he disagreed with the Roman Catholic Bishop who said that maybe it is time for “sodomy” to be decriminalised. Now, there’s nothing wrong with this - everyone is free to express their opinion on this very topical issue. Even the virulently anti-gay Hungarian official who was recently caught fleeing a gay orgy in just his birthday suit! But what Changlee did - like most of these fellas who protest too much - was to drag in the straw man of same sex couplings with boys - pedophilia.

This isn’t what the good Bishop was talking about - even though the abominable practice has reached epidemic proportions in the Catholic Church. He was talking about sodomy between consenting ADULTS! Children, by definition, can’t consent!

Then Changlee wrote a missive claiming Indian “intellectuals” have protested the word “coolie”.

Really? Why should they complain when the same persons using the word as a slur say, “Coolies own everything”? …order of petitions When the PNC started concocting their “anomalies” so as to file their election petitions, your Eyewitness had pointed out that in the interest of due process - and natural justice and all the other canonical foundations of the judicial system - the election petition filed by the PPP following the 2015 elections had to be heard before the PNC’s. Even though the PNC had claimed that 33 was not the majority of 65, surely, the rejection of that mathematical absurdity by the CCJ means that “first” still comes before “second”!

So your Eyewitness was quite taken aback when the Chief Justice (ag) scheduled the Case Management hearings for the ending of October, and matters have been proceeding with the greatest of alacrity. Now, as to whether the PNC petitions ought to be thrown out on the procedural defect of service is of no consequence to your Eyewitness.

The PNC has gotten their day in court.

Why didn’t the PPP? …breathalysers’ calibration PNC exec Gary Best dodged the bullet in the “causing death by dangerous driving” case because the breathalyser used wasn’t “calibrated”.

“I got a lot of threats” – outgoing Canadian High Commissioner Chatterjee …but stood resilient in fight for Guyana’s democracy

utgoing Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Lilian Chatterjee will soon take up her next diplomatic mission in Barbados. But she is unlikely to forget the fivemonth election controversy

It was unfamiliar territory for the diplomat. But according to her, she was never intimidated, nor did she flinch from carrying out her duties and insisting on the will of the people as expressed in the polls, being respected.

“And so, it was surprising to me that people fabricated things about what I may have done or said. Because that’s not how we are. But I wasn’t going to back down. I wasn’t intimidated, I wasn’t frightened. But I did get a lot of threats,” Chatterjee explained.

in Guyana and the threats that came her way.

In an exclusive interview with this publication on Saturday, Chatterjee admitted that those five months saw a number of threats being made against her. She revealed that at the insistence of the Canadian Government, her security was even beefed up to a 24/7 security detail.

Government insisted that I take on 24/7 security. I wouldn’t say I was frightened. But I was under attack and that was an unfamiliar experience for me to be criticised (for my position). Because Canada does not take sides. We do not have a horse in the race. We just wanted it to be a free and fair elections. That’s all we were calling for.”

It was only a few days ago that Chatterjee and her fellow ABCE diplomats (former British High Commissioner to Guyana Greg Quinn, US Ambassador to Guyana Sarah-Ann Lynch and European Union Ambassador Fernando Ponce-Canto) were honoured by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA).

Asked about how she felt when she received her award, the High Commissioner said the experience was a humbling one. According to her, she was not even fully aware of the significance of her advocacy for democracy, until after President Dr Irfaan Ali was inaugurated.

“It was humbling, because when you go through it you just feel like you’re doing your job. And it has only been since the inauguration of President Ali, that so many people come up to me, thanking me for my role… I was speaking up on behalf of our Canadian Government.

Just advocating for our principles of respecting the will of the people,” Chatterjee said.

“But I didn’t think that it was so appreciated by Guyanese people. One of the things that really touched me was a six-year-old, coming up to me saying thank you so much. And I was taken aback. This six-year-old thanking me. And I would be in grocery stores or different areas. And people would come up and say, thank you.

And that has humbled me and warmed me, that it was so recognised.”

Change (APNU/AFC) coalition Government refused to concede defeat at the March 2 polls and demit office.

The Western diplomats had deemed the tabulation process for Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) – Guyana’s largest voting district – as lacking transparency and credibility. As the electoral impasse continued months after the March polls, the ABCE diplomatic community continued mounting pressure on the former Government to concede defeat, warning of Guyana facing isolation and consequences.

In fact, the United States had gone ahead to impose visa sanctions against sever-

al Government and electoral officials and their immediate family members for their role in the controversy. The UK, Canada, as well as the EU had also indicated that they were considering doing likewise.

Even now there are two election petitions before the High Court, which seek to vitiate the elections and cause fresh elections to be called.

However, there is also an application from Attorney General Anil Nandlall that seeks to strike out one of the petitions on the grounds of its service breaching the National Assembly Validity of Elections Act. A decision is expected to be made next month.

22-year-old dies after crashing into utility pole

here is no question that the citizens of a society must see it as a “common venture”, even as we reject conceptions of “nation” that are oppressive to existing diversities.

“Nation” and “state” have to be disarticulated, but we cannot throw out the baby with the bathwater, and we Guyanese have to achieve some commonality of outlook to survive. Whether we like it or not, the modern state is a reality, is the unit within which we act, and has sovereignty in the international arena. At independence, we inherited a state but not a nation, since the reality of our coming together ensured that we had no common culture “looming out of some immemorable past” as some other countries had. One does not identify with the state just like that – and that’s partially why we clung to our ethnicities.

Ravi Dev The problem before us is how do we, within our state, construct a “unity” of the peoples that does not seek to obliterate our diversities.

We propose that we demarcate our cultural sphere as a private one, with minimal state intervention in terms of definition, and to build the overarching unity we need in the public sphere. What we are suggesting is that we move from the idea of a “national culture” as a site for identification to the shared practice of a political ideology as the basis for engendering such identification within the state. Rather than those, such as Rex Nettleford, who demand that all ethnic groups assimilate into Creole culture to become “one nation”, we propose that a feeling of “we, the people” – of “Guyaneseness” - can be engendered in the process of our conscious construction of a democratic state.

We situate this construction of a national outlook within what we have labelled “Project Democracy” – the creation of conditions wherein we are all treated as one, equally, by the state. Equality of opportunity; human rights, encouragement, of diversities, due process; justice and fair play and rule of law may seem dry compared to the warmth of the blood ties of “nation”, but they can engender the unity of public purpose and the recognition of individual worth wherein we can be proud of our common citizenship.

Citizenship of Guyana has to become something that has concrete meaning to all of us. Institutions have to be organised around values that are consonant with the goals of the particular society.

Universalism is never power-neutral; its defenders always have a certain interest in it. Contra to the proponents of the universalism of Creole Culture to the Caribbean and Guyana, we should not repeat the American mistake (of privileging European culture) here and privilege any one group. Similarly, since the state itself had justified its legitimacy through the goal of all its citizens living by the principles and values of its ideology, if this is seen not to be the reality for some, the status quo will be challenged by the excluded. The movement towards allowing citizens to constantly authenticate themselves ideologically is always enabled: multiculturalism becomes part and parcel of the “nation by design”.

For Guyana, then, our ethnicities would be defined outside our “Guyaneseness” and to be African-Guyanese, AmerindianGuyanese or Indian-Guyanese etc would not be contradictory in any sense. The first part of our identity would be specific, while the latter universalistic. The “nation” would now be a space that ethnically imagined communities can live in and share.

To be Guyanese would be to share moral precepts – norms, values and attitudes – rather than shared cultural experience and practice. A good Guyanese would be one who is loyal to this country and strives to practice the secular, universalistic, ideological values it extols.

Guyana is therefore at a critical moment, where we are attempting to get a handle on ensuring that state power is equitably distributed among the several ethnic groups in our society, which is a precursor to the creation of the space necessary for such co-existence. Multiculturalism is not just about cultural practices; it is also a signifier of the power relations of the society. It is only when power is distributed equitably that the ideological values mean anything to the culturally embedded individual.

This is the content of a national identity.

Reports are that Patterdin lost control of his vehicle on Friday evening at about 22:30h and slammed into a utility pole.

Enquiries disclosed that the motor car was proceeding east along the northern side of the LBI Embankment Road, allegedly at a fast rate of speed, when the driver of the vehicle lost control and collided with a utility pole on the southern side.

The vehicle travelled some distance before landing in a nearby trench.

Among the things that were found were two cellular phones, one SIM card, two kilograms cannabis and a quantity of improvised weapons and other prohibited items.

Remembering the life of pioneering businessman Madho Beepat

adho Beepat was one of Guyana’s pioneering businessmen, breaking barriers and pushing boundaries. The name Beepat has become synonymous with

Going back in time to Rotterdam, his parents, Beepat and Jasodra, were living a simple life when they were blessed with him.

They were not rich people, but they were also not im-

bigger than the other, he only got his first pair at 13 years of age.

The village of Rotterdam was very quiet, and Beepat was raised to respect authority and his elders. He also was raised to work

innovation and quality and has been around for decades – so much so that it is now a household name.

He took his last breath on November 27, 2020.

The journey of Beepat from Rotterdam on the West Coast of Demerara to Regent Street in the heart of the city is one that is worthy of recognition.

It showcases the value of hard work, determination, and most of all, persever-

poverished. They were able to take care of their children through hard work.

The elder Beepat was a farmer and always ensured that his children got what they needed. However, luxury was not on the cards.

Madho Beepat, in a previous interview with Guyana Times, had recounted that because money was unavailable to purchase specialised shoes which he needed, since one foot was

hard and to give his best to every task.

He always wanted to make it big, so he always ensured that he worked to the best of his abilities while pushing every personal boundary.

The young Beepat attended the Central High School, located in the capital city, which was one of the prestigious institutions in the country at that time. Owing to the dis-

tance between Rotterdam and Georgetown, a decision was taken to have him stay with relatives in the city. He eventually ended up with his uncle Bhaichandeen, the founder of Bhaichandeen’s General Store.

Beepat returned home on weekends to spend time with his family. At the end of his secondary education, Beepat did not pass his school-leaving exams – the Junior Cambridge Examinations – because he failed English Language.

He had recounted that back in those days one failed subject meant the entire examination had been failed as opposed to today.

Nevertheless, he left school and took up a job with his uncle as a salesman, toiling in the position for five years. All throughout that time, he had his eyes set on bigger things and saved his earnings to pursue the dream of becoming a businessman.

By November 1953, Beepat had accumulated enough money to venture out on his own. He decided that the time was ripe for him to take the risk and start a business; he started his one-man operation in the La Penitence Market and began selling haberdasheries.

The operation was challenging and there were many days of trial and effort, but he never felt downtrodden. He persevered and worked even harder to ensure that his business did not flop. Over the years, he developed his

business acumen and w h e n the opp o r tunity presented itself for him to change locations, he grabbed it.

He moved his operation to Regent Street – which is today one of the busiest commercial districts in the country. However, at that time, it was underdeveloped and Beepat was one of the first businessmen to trade there.

He first rented a two-storey building at Lot 95 Regent Street and as his business grew, he bought the property and went on to acquire even more land on Regent Street.

After the abolishment of the licensing requirement for the importation of goods, Beepat’s business began to spiral upwards.

He began importing goods from various countries and played an instrumental role in making Regent Street the commercial hub it is today. His business was incorporated in 1977.

In 1979, Beepat, being the pioneer he was, set his sights on another venture in the Caribbean. In St Lucia, he established a garment and window factory, which proved to be highly successful, and subsequently, factories were also established in Grenada and Barbados.

He then returned to Guyana, and about 15 years ago, he established a window factory at

Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara. Today, it is one of the leading window factories, providing quality and innovative designs at an affordable cost.

Memories of a hardworking father

Beepat was a hero to his children. He was the embodiment of a hard worker and a true fighter.

Reflecting on memories of his father, Roy Beepat – Chairman of the Giftland Group – said his father was the hardest working person he knew.

“My father persevered.

He always ensured that we followed through (with everything we decided to focus on) and know your worth and what you say is what you do. Even if you make a bad deal, you have to stick through with it.

My father was one of the hardest workers I knew,” he said.

He recounted that when his father had moved in the 50s to Regent Street, which was then occupied

by Europeans, Syrians, Lebanese and Chinese, they refused to sell him goods. He then met an Englishman through a Confirming House and got the opportunity to purchase goods and from there, he started to break into the market.

When asked about his father’s final days, Roy Beepat said: “In his last days leading up to his death – he was always very healthy and four months ago, he started coughing up blood, which was unusual, because my father led a very, very healthy lifestyle.

So, suddenly he started coughing up blood and the doctors here couldn’t do anything, so we flew him to Florida and when we got the diagnosis, they discovered he had cancer in his left lung.

“The thing is we don’t have cancer in the family and we suspect it may be some dust or something that he was exposed to somewhere that made him ill. The last three months were very hard for him, because he couldn’t eat. He went through chemotherapy, radiation and for an 89-year-old body, that’s hard. The fact that he lasted three months when he had it is a testimony to the resilience and the strength of the man that was able to fight it. He fought to the bitter end.”

he power of scented candles is underrated and very much so.

One may not see the tangible benefits of purchasing such an item but when they are exposed to that first experience of the scents wafting through the air, emanating from the essential oils mixed with wax, they are forever changed.

It is almost like saying that scented candles are addicting, but a good addiction.

That very need for scented candles that were not readily available in Guyana led Tunuja Persaud to start first importing them into the country and ultimately producing her own.

Persaud is a young businesswoman with a passion to bring affordable luxury to the Guyanese market through her LIT Beauty & Personal Care brand.

The now 25-year-old developed her love for scented candles while she was a student studying Business Management at Miami Dade College in the United States. She is now the holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Administration.

She grew up around business since both of her parents are business owners and throughout her childhood, they would impart their knowledge to her and her siblings. They not only provided her with theoretical knowledge but also had her working alongside them and for Persaud, it is that hands-on experience that encouraged her to make a career in that field.

“I actually first start LIT because of my love for scent-

ed candles. Although I was living abroad, every time I returned home for vacation, I realised there were very few places I can find scented candles. Given my parents own a gas station and store, I started to ship scented candles in and sell them through my parents’ store,” she said.

It was from there that the LIT brand somewhat took off and encompassed not only candles but also personal body care items.

She got into the making of candles a few years ago when her sister and brother-in-law gifted her a candle making kit for Christmas. That gave her the push she needed to start practising and eventually creating candles with scents that applied to the demographic.

“I felt like all of my creativity was finally being put to use. All of this happened while I was still studying abroad, so I would make candles at home in Miami and ship them to Guyana – it was a very small-scale operation (juggling school and LIT). I would even find the time to make candles when I came back for vacation in Guyana this was definitely something I was determined to do.

“I even took over my mother’s kitchen at one point. I moved back home in December 2019 and now a lot has changed. I basically have my little candle studio right at home,” the young entrepreneur stated.

While it may seem as though she had smooth sailing in the starting up of her business, Persaud said there were many hurdles to cross and challenges to overcome.

She had to learn the candle making process, market

her products and ensure she provided her customers with the best services. The process has taught resilience and how to get up and push forward after failing. Despite that knowledge, she is still learning every day as she delves deeper into operating her business.

The response from the local market has been amazing for her and she noted that it can be very exciting, sometimes overwhelming but overall “the vibes are good.”

“In the next five years, I am not entirely (sure what is going to happen) but I just know I want to be happy doing what I love and keep working on my business. Everything moves at its own pace and I do not want to rush anything. I rather have things done properly than to fix it after,” Persaud posited.

Right now, Persaud operates her candle store located in Choke Supermarket (the RUBiS Gas Station) in Strathspey on the East Coast of Demerara and also has a small section in the Choke Mini Mart (RUBiS) in La Bonne Intention on the East Coast of Demerara.

She currently has three of her candle lines available in two of Bounty Supermarkets - Kitty and Bourda, Massy Store in Providence and Unique Innovations in Giftland Mall. There are definitely plans for expanding that network in the immediate future.

“One of the main aspects of my candles that I truly love and will continue to do is contribute to Charity. Every now and again I would start a temporary candle line that aims to help raise awareness and donations. I have done

this for The Guyana Cancer Foundation, The Sorsha Williams Foundation for Autistic and Special Needs Education, Hauraruni Girl’s Home in Soesdyke and for many local animal rescuers in Guyana,” Persaud told Guyana Times.

he art scene in Guyana has been constantly evolving but no matter how much it evolves it seems as though there are very little avenues for artists to display their work. It is true that the Castellani House would have exhibitions and from time to time, organisations and groups would have exhibitions highlighting work, but that leaves much to be desired, especially for young up and coming artists.

What Guyana needs is much more support for the art world because the fact is, we have a lot of talented persons living here. If we cannot provide them with the avenues to showcase their work and embed their names in the fabric of our country’s history, they

will move to greener pastures.

Being in the art world themselves and recognising the need for more emphasis to be placed on showcasing their work and the work of their fellow artists, led three students of School of the Nations to create the “Heart Through Art” initiative.

The initiative was first conceptualised by self-taught artist Vimaldat Bissessar and supported by Kezyah Bolah and Ashley St Aubyn. The objective of the exhibition is to provide more opportunities for artists to showcase their talent to the wider Guyanese

society. It also provides an opportunity for the population to interact with the artists to

get a feel of their work and the process that goes into creating their masterpieces.

Heart through Art is scheduled for December 11 and 12 at the School of the Nations in Georgetown and a minimal fee of $1000 will be charged to raise funds for students continuing their education at School of the Nations. The students are enrolled in the ABE online programme offered by the school and hail from countries such as Gambia in West Africa, Turkey and Afghanistan ref-

ugees.

The goal of the initiative is to reach beyond the single exhibition and charity. The team is aiming to increase society’s value for art and bridge the gap between experienced and upcoming artists.

According to Bissessar, the name has been coined for its support to an inspiring charity being funded by School of the Nations.

“As a young artist, opportunities to exhibit works are rare, but they are always appreciated.

This opportunity stood out because it was organised by other young artists and creatives - people who are passionate about the arts and genuine in their endeavours.

So, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this. After being in lockdown for so many months, the amount of art I produced started to decline, but once I knew that I would be exhibiting, that changed. It reignited the flame in me and I was able to get back into my usual process of constantly creating art,” Roberto Teekah - one of over twenty local artists

showcasing their work – said.

Since early November, Heart Through Art has been having mini sneak peeks of the artwork to be on display as well as live portrait drawing and live painting at the Giftland Mall. Founder of the Giftland Group has welcomed the initiative and given his commitment for further support of the local art fraternity.

“I was pleasantly surprised at the public’s interest. People were very inquisitive and I could sense how eager they were to get out of the house and be entertained in a safe space” Bhola related.

The event has not only been recognised by the Giftland Mall, but is also being sponsored by major companies like ANSA McAl, Banks, Burrowes School of Art, as well as various media companies around Guyana.

COVID guidelines will be in place to make the event as safe as possible. The team encouraged the public to take a break and go be inspired by amazing creatives as well as support local artists to pursue their passion. They also urged the public to go prepared to be amazed and purchase some art.

n its continued thrust to promote agriculture and inspire children to love agriculture, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Green Economy Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, took its Vertical Kitchen Garden Project to the David Rose Special Needs School.

The Project aims to demonstrate the use of recyclables to establish a kitchen garden. The Green Economy Committee used plastic bottles and arranged them against a supporting backdrop to allow for water and soil nutrients conservation when tending to the plants.

The Chamber is emphatic in its belief that concrete homes do not preclude anyone from having a kitchen garden.

Vegetables planted were thyme, celery, lettuce and callaloo - the bulk of which were donated by the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).

These plants are all known for their health benefits.

Children were also included in the exercise to develop their interest in agriculture.

It is the intention of the Chamber to take its Vertical Kitchen Garden Project to other schools in the new year at the Fourth Form level so as to achieve one of its long-term goals of sus-

tainable agriculture and ensure it continues to nurture young agricultural entrepreneurs. This will run concurrently with the Plant a Tree Initiative which was

launched in Agriculture Month of this year.

In a time when the entire world is battling the effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), there is no better way to social dis-

tance or self-isolate yourself than taking up some kitchen gardening. Apart from those who live in the city, almost all Guyanese have a c -

cess to a little "extra" land at the back of their homes.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations urges the safeguarding of nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic by taking up home

gardening.

This is one way of controlling what is eaten and how food is grown.

The work of the FAO around the world suggests that kitchen gardens can supply up to half of all non-staple food needs, as well as a significant number of vitamins and minerals. This makes them an invaluable tool for food security, particularly for vulnerable families and communities that may already be struggling to meet their nutritional requirements.

Growing vegetables such as callaloo (bhaji) can help families to improve their nutrition by following the foodbased dietary guidelines of Guyana which encourage consumption of a healthy and economical mixed diet. It is known that a healthy diet high in fresh foods - vegetables, fruits and staples, such as sweet potatoes and eddoes, will support a healthy immune system, which is especially important during times of stress and contagion.

Home gardening is also a valuable form of physical exercise (bending, stretching).

During this time of quar-

antine and self-isolation, the stress of coping with uncertainty and the “new normal” can be amplified. Beyond physical health, kitchen gardens can also contribute to supporting good mental health, particularly of elderly persons and children by providing them with a productive outlet. Planning, establishing, tending and harvesting kitchen gardens are all activities that keep the mind occupied. These can be done at the pace of the individual to ensure that it does not become stressful or overwhelming.

Starting a kitchen garden is quite easy. First, you would need to identify the spot in which you want to grow your crops. Keep in mind some crops grow better while exposed to direct sunlight while others grow better under shade. So, understanding the crops which you intend to grow is of paramount importance.

After you’ve identified the spot in which you wish to

have your home garden, you will forge ahead and prepare the soil. This process may be the toughest since it involves some amount of manual labour. The beds would then be made and the soil prepared by introducing organic manure to aid the growth of the crops.

Then comes the fun part of planting. Either seeds or seedlings can be acquired from the various plant shops and transplanted into the prepared beds. The plants should be watered twice per day and then you can watch the magic happen as they grow so that you can reap.

Bear in mind that you have to ensure that weeds do not infest your beds.

The satisfaction of eating what you’ve grown is incomparable. It is rewarding enough to just see the crops grow to their full potential.

If you have limited space, then you should really think about giving the GCCI’s idea of a vertical kitchen garden a shot.

steoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. It tends to occur in middle age or due to an

injury or obesity. Sometimes called wear and tear arthritis, this occurs when the smooth cushion between bones (cartilage) breaks down, joints can get painful, swollen and hard to move. OA can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in hands, knees, hips, lower back and neck. OA can happen at any age, but it commonly starts in the 50s and affects women more than men. This disease starts gradually and worsens over time. However, there are ways to manage OA to prevent or minimize pain and keep mobile. Some people never develop OA. CAUSES Osteoarthritis was long be-

lieved to be caused by the wearing down of joints over time.

Nevertheless, scientists now see it as a disease of the joint compounded with various genetic and environmental risk factors.

Risk factors that may contribute to OA include: * Age. The risk of developing OA increases when someone gets older because bones, muscles and joints are also aging. * Joint injury. A break or tear, can lead to OA after years. * Overuse. Using the same joints repeatedly in a job or sport can result in OA. * Obesity. Extra weight puts more stress on a joint and fats cells promote inflammation. * Weak muscles. Joints can get out of the right position

when there’s not enough support. * Genes. People with family members who have OA are more likely to develop OA. * Sex. Women are more likely to develop OA than men.

SYMPTOMS Symptoms tend to build over time rather than show up suddenly. They include: * Pain or aching in the joint during activity, after long activity or at the end of the day. o Hips. Pain is felt in the groin area or buttocks and sometimes on the inside of the knee or thigh. o Knees. A “grating” or “scraping” feeling when moving the knee.

o Fingers. Bony growths (spurs) at the edge of joints can cause fingers to become swollen, tender and red. There may be pain at the base of the thumb. o Feet. The big toe feels painful and tender. Ankles or toes may swell. * Joint stiffness usually occurs first thing in the morning or after resting. * Limited range of motion that may go away after movement. * Clicking or cracking sound when a joint bends. * Swelling around a joint. * Muscle weakness around the joint. * Joint instability or buckling (knee gives out).

As OA gets worse, cartilage may get uneven edges and cracks. Bones may harden, change shape and get bumpy.

Once cartilage breaks down, it doesn’t grow back on its own.

DIAGNOSIS Medical history, a physical examination and lab tests help to make an OA diagnosis. The doctor will go over medical history information, symptoms, how the pain affects activities, as well as medical problems and medication use. The doctor will look at and move the joints.

These tests help to make the diagnosis: * Joint aspiration. After numbing the area, a needle is inserted into the joint to pull out fluid. This test will look for infection or crystals in the fluid. The results can help rule out other medical conditions or other forms of arthritis. * X-ray. X-rays can show joint or bone damage or changes related to osteoarthritis as well as stage of OA * MRI. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) gives a better view of cartilage and other parts of the joint.

HEALTH EFFECTS AND COMPLICATIONS Pain, reduced mobility, side effects from medications and other factors associated with osteoarthritis can lead to negative health effects not directly related to the joint disease. * Obesity, Diabetes and Heart Disease Knee or hip pain may make it harder to exercise. That can cause or worsen weight gain and lead to obesity. Being overweight or obese can lead to the development of high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. * Falls People with osteoarthritis experience as much as 30 percent more falls and have a 20 percent greater risk of facture than those without OA. Having OA can decrease function, weaken muscles and make it more likely that someone has a fall. Side effects from pain medications, such as dizziness, can also contribute to falls.

TREATMENT There is no cure for OA, but medication, nondrug methods and assistive devices can help to ease pain. As a last resort, a damaged joint can be surgically replaced with a metal, plastic or ceramic one. * Medications Pain and anti-inflammatory medicines for osteoarthritis are available as pills, syrups, patches and creams, or they are injected into a joint. They include: * Analgesics. These are pain relievers and include acetaminophen (Panadol) and opioids.

Acetaminophen is available over-the-counter (OTC), and a doctor must prescribe opioids. * Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are the most commonly used drugs to ease inflammation and pain. They include aspirin, ibuprofen, Diclofenac, etc. They are available OTC or by prescription, but the OTC versions only help the pain. * Counterirritants. These OTC products have ingredients like capsaicin, menthol and lidocaine. They irritate nerve endings, so the painful area feels cold, warm or itchy to take focus away from the actual pain. * Corticosteroids –These prescription anti-inflammatory medicines works in a similar way to a hormone called cortisol, by reducing inflammation around the joints. They can be delivered orally or injected into the joint. * Platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Available specialized clinics and are delivered by injection, this product has proteins that help ease pain and inflammation. * Other drugs. The anti-depressant duloxetine (Cymbalta) and the anti-seizure drug pregabalin are oral medicines that are FDA-approved to treat OA pain.

Nondrug Therapies * Exercise Movement is an essential part of an OA treatment plan.

Getting 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week should be the goal according to the American Heart Association (AHA). A good exercise program to fight OA pain and stiffness has four parts: * Strengthening exercises build muscles around painful joints and helps to ease the stress on them. * Range-of-motion exercise or stretching helps to reduce stiffness and keep joints moving. * Aerobic or cardio exercises help improve stamina and energy levels and reduce excess weight. * Balance exercises help strengthen small muscles around the knees and ankles and help prevent falls. * Weight Loss Weighing more than what is healthy puts extra stress on the hips, knees, feet and back.

Losing weight helps to reduce pain and stop or slow down joint damage. Every pound of weight lost removes four pounds of pressure on lower-body joints. * Physical Therapies and Assistive Devices Physical therapists, occupational therapists and chiropractors can provide: * Specific exercises to help stabilize joints and ease pain. * Braces, shoe inserts or other assistive devices. * Surgery Joint surgery can improve function or replace damaged joints to restore mobility and relieve pain. Hips and knees are the joints most commonly replaced. An orthopaedic surgeon can determine the best procedure based on how badly damaged the joint is.

While developing Osteoarthritis may become challenging physically, mentally and even financially. Selfcare is important, a carefully plan diet, exercise, weight management, assistive devices, medication and regular medical check-ups can help reduce the impact of Osteoarthritis.

General

eptospirosis is a contagious disease caused by a germ belonging to a group of spiral shaped bacteria (pathogens) called spirochetes.

After the GREAT FLOOD of 2005 in Guyana , Leptospirosis (in humans) became a common name among the list of diseases which affected many persons. This ailment has been around for a long time in both animals and humans.

It is a zoonotic disease and can pass between animals and people. Although cats can become infected, feline leptospirosis cases are rare.

The literature on this disease tells us that there are literally hundreds of different types (immunologically distinct serovars) of Leptospira germs. Worse, they cannot cross-immunize, which means that if the animal becomes sick because of one type of the germ and recovers, that animal is not protected against the other forms of the Leptospira germ.

Q: HOW DOES THE ANIMAL ACTUALLY ( P H Y S I C A L L Y ) CONTRACT THE LEPTOSPIRA GERM? A: The infection is usually acquired when the germ comes in contact with the skin via urine-contaminated feed and water. The Leptospira germ can also infect a dog via contact with the eyeball surface and surrounding tissues, and with the vagina.

These Leptospira germs can easily invade and multiply in an environment (kennel) which was heretofore free from the germ.

In passing, I should mention the following: Empirical observations and some research of Vet Clinics’ records reinforce the conviction that this disease is more prevalent during the rainy seasons than during the dry seasons. The theory is that since Leptospirosis can be transmitted by rats, they are the ones infecting dogs via their saliva and urine.

During the rainy season, the rats’ food reservoirs become flooded and inedible. The rats, more than usual, are forced to seek new food sources which include the water and food bowls of dogs. The saliva/ urine contaminated residual food is then consumed by the dogs. Of course, since the Leptospirosis germ can enter the animal’s body through the skin, then any dog (or human) wading through infected waters without protective boots/clothing could become infected.

Q: ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC LEPTOSPIRA GERMS WHICH ATTACK DOGS? A: As I mentioned above there are hundreds of

types (serovars) which have been identified. The four main ones, by far (but not the only ones), have the following names: • L. canicola • L. icterohaemorrhagia • L. pomona • L. grippotyphosa I document these types only as a reference guide.

When a dog is vaccinated, these names must be printed on the vaccine vial, and the relevant information (usually the labels on the vials) are placed on the dog’s Vaccination Certificate and endorsed by the veterinarian’s signature.

Q: CAN DOGS OF ALL AGES BE INFECTED? A: Dogs of all ages can be infected.

Q: CAN BOTH MALE AND FEMALE BE AFFECTED? A: There seems to be no special affinity of the germ to either male or female dogs Q: WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? A: The signs of a Leptospira infection which emerge between 4-12 days after the dog has been infected include: 1. Yellowing (jaundice) of the whites of the eyes, the ears, the mouth (oral cavity) and the underbelly. The degree of yellowing will depend on the severity of the infection and the general health status of the animal.

2. Fever.

3. Depression and listlessness.

4. Loss of appetite; and the affected animal exhibits a pronounced desire to drink more water/fluids.

5. Expression of pain, especially when the animal’s abdomen and muscles of its extremities are touched.

6. The emergence of blood in the urine later on.

The dog may also exhibit a disinclination to urinate.

7. Diarrhoea and vomiting which lead to severe dehydration.

8. Ulcers begin to develop in the mouth.

N.B. 1. Your vet’s laboratory facilities can be used to help more definitively with the diagnosis.

2. Your veterinarian will palpate the patient’s kidneys and liver (not too difficult in a young and/or emaciated dog), to ascertain if there is any swelling (enlargement) of these two organs.

Q: CAN THE DOG OVERCOME THE LEPTOSPIRA INFECTION? A: Yes! But it would be remiss of me not to mention that because both the pet’s owner and the vet want the animal to survive, there may be the tendency to think

that the ailment has been conquered, after the initial exhibition of the symptoms has declined – only to experience a later surge of more intense and debilitating developments, especially bloody diarrhoea.

Once the yellowing (jaundice) has emerged, the staining of the skin of the legs, ears and elsewhere does not disappear easily and quickly. Even if the patient overcomes the ailment, this yellowing will persists for a while.

Q: W H A T TREATMENT PROTOCOL CAN THE CAREGIVER EXPECT THE VET TO INTRODUCE? 1. Immediately your vet will introduce: • Rehydration and Dialysis therapy.

• Antibiotics.

Over the years vets have been successful in administering Tetracyclines, Doxycycline and Penicillin to counter the phase when the germ is in the blood stream. Also, Enrofloxacin, a relatively more recent antibiotic, seems to kill the Leptospira germ.

2. All other supportive interventions that he/she may deem necessary (e.g. special diets, medication to reduce the fever and counteract the vomiting and diarrhoea, etc.).

Q: SHOULD DOGS C O M P U L S O R I L Y R E C E I V E VACCINATIONS AGAINST LEPTOSPIROSIS? A: Compulsorily is a strong assertion. But it is very advisable to have your dog vaccinated against “Lepto”. We are lucky that the vaccines against Canine Distemper and Parvovirus (See “Pet Care” Columns of November 22 and 29, 2020) also include the main types (serovars) of the Lepto germs which are lethal – see above.

Please follow the vaccination protocol which your vet will suggest – viz. at least 3 vaccinations within a 6-week period, commencing when the pup is at least 6 weeks old and even as an adult, including an “Annual Booster”). The vaccines are safe and effective, once they have been stored properly and administered to the puppies not before 6 weeks of age.

Q: ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO THE “LEPTO” VACCINE? A: Highly unlikely.

But it is a vaccine and as such there is always a possibility (though slight) of a reaction, e.g. Listlessness and inappetence a day or two after the vaccination. If the animal displays a “shock” reaction, it will occur shortly after the vaccination. Call your vet immediately. Some vets actually will provide anti-allergy tablets, to be given to the animal by the caregiv-

er, just in case there is a severe reaction before or when

the animal arrives home.

We shall discuss anaphylactic shock/reactions later.

Labour and delivery

If you are healthy as you approach the end of pregnancy, some aspects of your labour and delivery might proceed as usual. But

be prepared to be flexible.

Whether you deliver your baby vaginally or via cesarean will depend on a lot of factors, and not just whether you have COVID-19.

If you are scheduled for labor induction or a C-section, you might be screened for COVID-19 symptoms 24 to 48 hours before your arrival at the hospital. You might be screened again before entering the labor and delivery unit. If you

have symptoms or the virus that causes COVID-19, your induction or C-section might be rescheduled.

To protect the health of you and your baby, the hospital might limit the number of people you can have in the room during labor and delivery. Visits after delivery might be affected too.

Also, during your hospitalization, if you have

COVID-19, or are waiting for test results due to symptoms, it's recommended during hospitalization after childbirth that you wear a cloth face mask and have clean hands when caring for your newborn.

Keeping your newborn's crib by your bed while you are in the hospital is fine, but it's also recommended that you maintain a reasonable distance from your baby when possible. When these steps are taken, the risk of a newborn becoming infected with the COVID-19 virus is low.

Research suggests that only about 2-5 percent of infants born to women with COVID-19 near the time of delivery test positive for the virus in the days after birth.

However, if you are severely ill with COVID-19, you might need to be temporarily separated from your newborn.

Wismar raid unearths 12.2kg ganja Baramita woman

A

57-year-old gold miner is now in hot water after he was caught with 12.2 kilograms of marijuana during a raid in Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

Reports are the discovery was made between 04:00h and 06:00h on Friday at Victory Valley, Squatting Area, Wismar, Linden.

Police said the raid was conducted at homes of several persons in the Wismar Station District, for drugs, ammunition, guns and wanted persons.

During a search at the home of the gold miner of Victory Valley Squatting Area, Wismar, two large shopping bags containing three large parcels and a white plastic bag with nine ziplock bags all containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana, were discovered.

As such the miner was arrested.

The narcotics were subsequently weighed and amounted to 12.2kg.

Only on Thursday, three men were arrested after they were found with a quantity of cannabis.

Police said that at about 16:30h, Police officers conducted a cordon and search exercise at “Spliff” Street, Church of God Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

On the same day, Police conducted another search on a 27-year-old man of B Buxton, ECD, and found 11 transparent ziplock bags containing a number of seeds, leaves, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Further, a search conducted on a 35-year-old man, also of Buxton, ECD, unearthed a transparent ziplock bag containing a quantity of seeds, leaves, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Also, cops discovered a ziplock bag in a bush on the southern side of “Spliff” Street, Church of God Road, ECD, containing 262 grams of cannabis. The men were told of the offence committed and arrested. (G9)

25-year-old woman is now hospitalised after she was stabbed multiple times about her body by a 25-year-old woman at Barama Line, Baramita Village, North West District, Region One (Barima Waini).

Injured is Joanna John.

According to Police, the women were imbibing at a shop in the area when at about 21:50h, an argument ensued. Police said that the angry suspect armed herself with a broken bottle and dealt John several stabs about her body.

As a result, John fell to the ground bleeding profusely. The police were summoned to the scene, and John was rushed to the Baramita Health Post where she was admitted a patient.

Shortly after, the suspect was arrested and is assisting Police with inves-

tigations. Just recently, a 24-year-old man of Logg Hill Village, Baramita, North West District, was chopped about his body with a cutlass after he slapped a woman.

Deon Henry, a miner, was consuming alcohol at Logg Hill Village, in the company of the woman, when an argument ensued between them.

During the argument, the miner dealt the woman several slaps to her face.

The woman then armed herself with a cutlass and dealt the man several chops about his body.

Reports are the man then went home and told his family what had transpired and they contacted a motorcycle and took him to the Baramita Health Centre where he was treated and sent away.

Govt looking to stimulate opportunities for Guyanese in natural resources sector – Minister …as team visits Bonasika bauxite mines

atural Resources Minister, Vickram Bharrat said Government has placed very high on its agenda, the need to create opportunities for Guyanese, especially in the area of natural resources.

He made these remarks during a tour on Friday of the US-operated First Bauxite (FBX) at the Bonasika Bauxite Project - which manages the local subsidiary, the

“The company seems very organised. A number of issues would have been raised in terms of local content. The company is on par with the Government’s plans. Out of the 102 employees, two are foreigners and 100 are local,” Bharrat highlighted.

communities. The company has established a school and offers electricity to a neighbouring village.

“What we mentioned to the company is that the Government’s objective is to look at value-added and to create more opportunities for Guyanese and local businesses too. The company has constructed a new primary school for the neighbouring village so that those students can benefit from that facility. They’re also producing electricity for the neighbouring community, Sand Hills. It’s a

very small village and also they are purchasing local vegetables from those villages, which is something that we encourage and support,” the Minister acknowledged.

First Bauxite would have launched its operations locally back in February, and is ranked as the third largescale mining company in Guyana.

Some US$100 million has been invested by the company as it is estimated to inject over US$387 million into the local economy within the next 15 years.

It had outlined that within this period, some 13 million tonnes of bauxite would be mined.

Presently, it has a capacity to wash 300,000 metric tonnes of bauxite annually. GINMIN has licences for mining operations at Bonasika One, Two, Five, Six and Seven with an area of over 18,000 acres.

Amid these developments, the plan to hire Guyanese is linked to a

sturdy Local Content Policy.

Last week, the Advisory Panel on Local Content that was convened by President Dr Irfaan Ali submitted its first report to Minister Bharrat.

It is understood that the report contains recommendations on how Guyana can go about building a strong local content framework, not only for the oil and gas sector, but also for other non-oil sectors.

Previously, the Natural Resources Minister had held a meeting with the panel, during which the importance of providing opportunities in the oil and gas sector for goods and services produced locally, as well as for skilled and semi-skilled labour, was emphasised.

And as part of their work towards compiling the report, the panel had held a number of engagements with stakeholders, including the Private Sector and Government agencies like the Department of Energy.

The bigger concern is whether an infected mother can transmit the virus to the baby through respiratory droplets during breast-feeding. If you have COVID-19 or are a symptomatic person under investigation for having the virus, take steps to avoid spreading the virus to your baby.

Wear a cloth face mask in public and at work.

Limit contact with others as much as possible.

Instead, consider sharing moments with friends and family via photos, videos or videoconferencing. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.

And skip the baby wipes -they don’t disinfect.

Above all, focus on taking care of yourself and your baby.

Like swollen ankles and constipation, worry is a constant companion when you’re pregnant. But it’s important to keep perspective. This new coronavirus is serious business, but, pregnant or not, you’re not a sitting duck.

While much still needs to be learned about the virus, the little research that’s out shows that pregnant women with COVID-19 are no more likely than others to have severe disease. And the virus is not likely to be passed along to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth, according to limited data we have so far.

As the saying goes, it pays to be prepared, not scared.

Simple steps like thorough hand washing and limiting your time in crowds can go a long way in protecting you and your baby.

Here are a few tips on how to have an eco-friendly Christmas: Take reusable bags when Christmas shopping While the ban on single use plastics has not yet been implemented, you can take the initiative to be eco-friendly this holiday season by taking your own bags while shopping.

Go a step further and be an advocate for the environment by encouraging your local grocer or your favourite supermarket to take steps to preserve the environment, starting with encouraging customers to bring their own bags; providing re-usable bags, with discounts for customers who use those bags; and charging customers for plastic bags provided.

Give gifts that would last In some households, Christmas Day involves exchanging lots of presents between friends and family; some big, some small, and some extremely short-lived. When thinking about the gifts you’re going to buy for Christmas, consider what kind of presents may be more long-lasting than others, and thus reduce the risk of simply being discarded after a short while.

Thoughtful, long-lasting presents may include a photo album; a plant; or something the recipient has specifically said they want, and is likely to use time and time again.

Additionally, there are a number of local small businesses that have emerged during the pandemic, as persons sought to commercialise those hidden skills; why not support those local entrepreneurs and give gifts that would reduce your carbon footprint?

They are customarily used to decorate trees, the interior of homes, and the exterior as well. Should you use lights as part of your Christmas decorations, it would be more ecoconscious to use LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs.

However, it is not an essential part of the festivities, especially when you can be wrapping your gifts in a more sensible manner. There are many great looking alternatives to plastic wrapping paper, including paper, old calendars, cloth, and paper bags (without the wax coating).

Reduce your food waste Many of us reading this article might say, “What food waste?” However, if you do not finish all the food on your Christmas table, then it is important to think twice before chucking it in the bin, as both an environmental and a social issue.

Cook less meat and source ingredients consciously Perhaps a more controversial option for the meat lovers among us, it's also worth considering reducing the amount of meat consumed during the festive period, as we become increasingly aware of its impact on the earth when consumed in large quantities.

That doesn't have to mean going cold turkey (get it?!); just be aware that there are many delicious veggie options out there. Perhaps you could try replacing just one meaty meal. This one may be a bit harder, considering our love for pepperpot and garlic pork; just try one.

That said, it's not just about the food we eat; where we get it from can also alter our impact on the planet. Opting for organic meat and veg is the best way to ensure that potentially harmful pesticides haven't been used during the cultivation process. It's also worth sourcing food locally, if possible.

Shopping in a supermarket? Avoid plastic packaging, where possible – loose veg is a great starting point.

15 persons nabbed during WBD raid …drugs, suspected stolen items found

T

he Guyana Police Force on Saturday conducted a raid at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, in which several persons were arrested for various offences.

According to information received, the search was carried out between 04:30h and 08:00h.

During the organised activity, a 25-year-old was taken into custody for possession of eight grams of cannabis. A Black TCL 42inch flat-screen television among other items, suspected to be stolen, were also found in his home. The mason was questioned about the items but could not give a reasonable explanation as to how he acquired them. As a result, the ranks took possession of the items.

Meanwhile, a 31-yearold was arrested for the offence of wounding. A search

was also carried out on his home and one black Top Sonic 32-inch flat-screen television was found. He could not give ranks a reasonable explanation as to how he acquired the appliance and it was subsequently seized by the officers on duty.

Those arrested and placed into custody pending investigation for breaking and entering and larceny included a 17-year-old, an 18-year-old and 11 residents of West Minister,

WBD. Further, a search was carried out at Lot 2850 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara – an empty lot in a clump of bushes - where a red bucket containing 120 grams of suspected cannabis seeds was unearthed.

Through these raids, the police have been able to discover a series of illegal or suspicious activities.

Just last week, Police would have destroyed an estimated $3.4 million worth of

marijuana during an eradication exercise at Gatetroy and DeVeldt villages in Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne). The raid, lasting more than 15 hours, was facilitated by a team of B Division Police ranks.

After a man was seen running at DeVeldt, a search was conducted on the premises, and several guns and rounds of ammunition were found concealed under the floorboards of the house.

The items found include one double-barrel 12-gauge shotgun, one 20-gauge shotgun, one .32 shotgun, and two OPS air guns. In addition, nine 12-gauge, one 20-gauge, and five .32 cartridges were found at the location. The firearms and ammunition were confiscated and subsequently taken to the Central Police Station as investigations continue. (G12)

Active COVID-19 cases decrease …36 new cases reported

G

uyana’s active COVID-19 cases have decreased despite 36 new positive cases being recorded on Saturday. The total number of active cases has dropped to 753.

The Health Ministry’s daily dashboard showed that the deaths remained at 151 and 4733 persons have recovered. To date, 2915 males and 2722 females have contracted the virus.

There are five persons in the Intensive Care Unit, 53 persons in institutional isolation, 695 in home isolation and 37 in institutional quarantine.

New cases were detected in eight regions, and a breakdown confirmed five new cases in Region One (BarimaWaini); two in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam); two in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); 10 in Region Four (DemeraraMahaica); nine in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne);

two in Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni); one in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni) and six in Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

The cases in Regions Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) remained at 41 and 388 respectively.

Presently, the Ministry is closely monitoring Bartica, Orealla and Siparuta. While there was a slight increase in Bartica, Siparuta has seen a decline in active cases.

Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony reminded Guyanese during the latest COVID-19 update that testing is available in all administrative regions throughout the country, primarily at the regional hospitals.

“We have teams of doctors and other personnel who have been trained to provide that testing. That’s available at these hospitals. In addition, what we have started doing is add some additional

sites where we think it’s necessary,” he shared.

In populous areas like Region Four, there are testing sites at Herstelling, Paradise and the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) in Georgetown. Meanwhile, the recent surge in cases in Berbice, Region Six, has initiated efforts to have additional sites in that region as well.

“What we do is urge persons to get tested. In addition, from time to time, we might detect cases in the remote communities and so we will send teams directly where they will be able to [carry out] more mass-based testing in the community.”

Mobile units are also part of the Ministry’s testing unit, venturing out into various communities to test residents and conduct checks.

Since it was commissioned, the units have been operating mainly on the coastland due to geographical con-

straints.

Speaking on the involvement of the Private Sector in the COVID-19 fight, he shared that many stakeholders have been donating masks and other supplies, which have been distributed to healthcare workers and the public. Other companies, which have the capacity to assist, are also asked to contribute.

“We are happy with those Private Sector companies that has been donating to us. We’ve had some significant donations over the last weeks. We have had companies donating masks; others engaging us in other areas and we want to commend them. We will continue to work with those Private Sector partners to see who would want to help with the response and we are very grateful. We encourage those that have the capacity to help, to also do so,” the Minister shared. (G12)

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption in the global economy. In the case of Guyana, the Bank of Guyana, in its Half Year Report for 2020, projected that the COVID-19 pandemic would continue to have adverse effects on major economic sectors, resulting in a downward revision of GDP growth. Real oil GDP is expected to grow by 45.9 %. Real non-oil GDP contracted by 4.9% due to declines in the services and construction sectors, while inflation is expected to be low, single digits.

Many Guyanese have been greatly affected by the pandemic, which also had an impact on the economy. Citizens were faced with challenges such as the loss of jobs, resulting in a decline in their spending power, which affected the business and banking sectors immensely. Hundreds, if not thousands, of households were unable to provide the basic necessities for survive on a daily basis. The interior regions of the country suffered most of all, since they are isolated from the city and had limited supply of goods to survive upon as the lockdown was enforced. The entire economy was basically at a standstill.

On September 25, 2020, an emergency budget to the tune of $330B was approved by the National Assembly. Of this $330B, $4.5B was set aside to provide relief to all households, which amounted to $25,000 per family.

Guyana has an estimated population of 750,000. If on average, there are 500 households in one village that is $12.5M that will be injected back into the village economy through spending on consumption goods and services. Guyana has many villages. If we estimate that there are about 200 well populated villages, then that would amount to $2.5B. By providing cash grants to these families, they, in turn, would go to the stores to stock up their homes with essentials, which would encourage businesses to reopen and rehire staff as demand and supply increases.

This results in rising spending powers along with increased domestic incomes, as jobs are recreated and families are able to earn again to invest into the economy in getting their needs along with paying bills and settling outstanding bank loans and credit terms.

By virtue of Guyana being on the cusp of an economic transformation wherein it just became a petroleum producing state, Guyana has an opportunity to become the driver of a transformative agenda within the region, viz-à-viz an enhanced framework that would foster deeper regional economic integration of South America and the Caribbean with the rest of the world.

This notion is premised against the backdrop of its arguably geopolitically potent location, its emerging petroleum industry, coupled with the increasing global interests in Guyana, especially from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union (EU), Canada, India, and many other countries. Notwithstanding the economic and financial impacts of the pandemic at the onset, Guyana is poised to experience an economic ‘boom’ in the medium to long term outlook. Oil production recently commenced offshore by ExxonMobil in December 2019.

Though there may not be any significant amount of direct employment for Guyanese by the multinational oil companies such as ExxonMobil, there will be a surge in demand for support goods and services, and thus the creation of indirect employment.

It is against these backgrounds, and the high level of investors’ confidence, both local and foreign, that Guyana’s development outlook is extremely positive. These developments have strategically positioned Guyana to lead a regional integration agenda aimed at strengthening South-South cooperation in South America, Latin America and the Caribbean through the auspices of CARICOM and the other regional trading bloc as mentioned herein, within the framework of leveraging the country’s development needs.

Within these respects, for example, Guyana’s geographic location in South America, which places it at an advantage in terms of access routes to the rest of the world, is an important factor that has to be considered in the deep water harbour project and the Brazil-Guyana road link project. These are two key transformative projects that can integrate more South-South cooperation in the area of trade and commerce; which would not only facilitate Brazil’s goods to move through Guyana, thereby creating new industries and commerce, but other South American countries’ goods can be transported through Guyana to access the rest of the world’s markets.

As a region and a sub-continent together, the political leaders of South American countries need to start examining the need for a South American Development Bank to focus on large scale development projects in the member states. In the long term as well, the need to connect the continent through the construction of railways would be necessary if the leaders of South America are serious about deepened integration of the continent, and to cement its role in regional integration in order to conduct business with the rest of the world. To this end, Guyana can become a regional hub for shipping and commerce, mirroring the Dubai and /or Panama models.

The emergency budget and COVID-19 relief cash grant have been set with the aim to revitalising the economy. The COVID-19 cash grant would help the country greatly in having the businesses up and running again, and having jobs recreated to contribute back to the economy.

Based on this analysis, one can agree that the Government has put forward a realistic and achievable approach in handling the situation in turning the economy around in 2020, despite the rough landing on August 2, 2020 and formidable challenges in a pandemic environment.

With such foundation being set, the economy is set to take off in 2021 as we remain on the edge of our seats for the 2021 budget, which one can anticipate would position Guyana for resilient and vibrant growth and development – especially with the high steam of foreign investments to the tune of billions of US dollars flowing in. Investors’ confidence is on the rise, evidently and demonstrably so. Guyana has a bright future over the next decade!

ith the Government seeking Expressions of Interest (EoIs) to design the upcoming Corentyne River bridge, outgoing Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Lilian Chatterjee has revealed that the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) is among those interested in building the bridge.

During an exclusive interview with this publication, Chatterjee made this disclosure. She explained that the CCC, which is Canada’s commercial arm, is also collaborating with another very large Canadian company for the contract to build the Corentyne River bridge. Ultimately though, Chatterjee noted that it is up to the Governments of Guyana and Suriname to choose the best contractor for the job.

“We’ve expressed interest verbally and the Canadian Commercial Corporation, a governmental organisation, is working with a very large private sector company in Canada and they’ve just put out an Expression of Interest,” the High Commissioner explained.

“So, I fully expect that they will do this, in terms of an Expression of Interest to build the bridge between Guyana and Suriname.

And then it’s up to the Governments of Guyana and Suriname, who they will choose to build the bridge.”

Back in October, President Dr Irfaan Ali had held a virtual meeting with High Commissioner Chatterjee and representatives of the CCC to discuss several major infrastructure projects in Guyana, including the Corentyne River bridge.

President Ali had pointed out that Guyana is focusing on key catalytic infrastructure needs which are important relative to Guyana’s population and size, following a brief presentation by CCC representative, Andrew Shisko.

Prior to the Government’s consultation with CCC, Guyana’s Public Works Minister Juan Edghill and Suriname’s Public Works Minister, Dr Riad Nurmohamed, had visited the site of the proposed Guyana-Suriname river bridge across the Corentyne River.

With the recent commitments to bridge Guyana and Suriname over the Corentyne River within five years, this project is expected to open up the pathway for other major developmental projects including the much-anticipated deep-water harbour project in Guyana.

access to greater economic opportunities beyond them into French Guyana, and through the road network being developed into Brazil, and eventually further into South America.

Transparency & accountability

Meanwhile, Chatterjee lauded the transparency surrounding the project and also expressed the view that the President Dr Irfaan Ali Administration has hit the ground running since coming to power as it relates to infrastructural projects. She noted that there are several such projects which are being done simultaneously.

“They’ve been very transparent in their process. They’ve been doing Expressions of Interest.

They’ve been doing bids and tenders. So, we’ll see who

they select for that and other infrastructure projects,” Chatterjee said.

Besides the Corentyne bridge, the Government is also looking to build a new bridge across the Demerara River. The Government is aiming to have a new fixed span, four-lane bridge constructed over the Demerara River that will be able to bridge the East and West Banks of Demerara from Nandy Park to La Grange, reduce traffic build-up and last for at least the next 50 years.

According to the Government’s invitation for Expressions of Interest (EoIs) and prequalification of qualified contractors, firms are being sought to submit proposals for both the design of the bridge and for available financing options.

On Friday, it was revealed that forty-two bids were submitted to the Public Works Ministry for the construction of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge.

The bids were removed from the tender box, counted and stamped in the presence of Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh and contactors at the Public Works Ministry, Wights Lane, Kingston.

Other upcoming projects include the Diamond/ Ogle bypass road. The bypass project will see some 26 kilometres of road constructed, linking two of the country’s main thoroughfares. This new road link will also be connected to key communities in Georgetown and along the East Bank of Demerara. These include Diamond, Mocha and Eccles – all on the East Bank – and Aubrey Barker Road in Georgetown. These connections will prove crucial in diverting traffic.

APNU/AFC Govt spent $1.2 trillion in 5 years – Finance Minister …Contingency Fund abused; economy left in disaster

S

ettling into his office, Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has a momentous task before him as he contended that the former Government spent $1.2 trillion in the last five years and left the economy in disaster, an abused Contingency Fund and US$400 million in new external debt.

In one of a series of statements he sent out on Saturday, Dr Singh explained that from 2015 to 2019, the former Government overburdened the population with taxation and collected revenues totalling $992 billion and then proceeded to squander $1.2 trillion.

“Despite this huge revenue collection, the then Government utilised these funds in an unproductive manner through wasteful and inefficient Government expenditure with total Government spend-

ing amounting to $1.2 trillion Guyana dollars. After accounting for grants received, the aggregate fiscal deficit of the central Government amounted to $130 billion over the fiveyear period,” Singh said.

Singh explained that when the People’s Progressive Party entered office, it was to find the economy in a state of disaster. He noted that the economy went through a challenging period over the last five years and this has manifested itself in a number of areas, including very modest, sluggish growth.

“At a time when oil production was imminent, we should have seen much more rapid growth given all of the investments that have been coming on stream in preparation for oil production. A large part of this was due to the political environment,” Dr Singh explained.

“For the last two years

the country was in a situation where a No-Confidence Motion (NCM) had been passed in December 2018 but was not being respected with the constitutionally stipulated election that should have come within three months of an NCM and that effectively created a political environment that was severely harmful,” he said adding that there was limited economic activity with both investor and consumer confidence drying up.

Minister Singh lamented that things got even worse during the period between March 2, 2020, to August 2020, when the political environment deteriorated even more dramatically bringing the economy to an effective standstill.

When it comes to external debt, the Minister revealed that the previous Government contracted new external debt of US$400 million during their five

years in office. In the domestic financing category, Singh pointed out that when the PPP/C demitted office in 2015, Government had left a net deposit at the Central Bank of $16 billion.

After five years of economic mismanagement by the previous Government, the new Government is now burdened with a net overdraft of $93 billion at the Central Bank… a situation highlighted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He added that if this overdraft is counted as domestic debt, this would result in an effective breach of the domestic debt ceiling.

In addition, Government is also currently saddled with the $30 billion NICIL bond of which $17 billion has been drawn down, and a staggering $12 billion owed to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) by Government entities, including $7 billion owed to the utility by the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).

Contingency Fund

Dr Singh also revealed that despite being a caretaker Government, the former A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) coalition abused the Contingency Fund, withdrawing large sums long after losing the No-Confidence Motion, and leaving a total of $4.2 billion of uncleared Contingency Fund advances.

“Much to our astonishment and during the latter part of 2019… after the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) ruling in June 2019….

no less than $4.2 billion dollars was drawn from the Contingency Fund to meet a variety of expenditure that had not been budgeted for,” he explained.

The Finance Minister reminded that despite an impending election and the fact that they were in caretaker mode, the former Government nevertheless dipped into the Contingency Fund to draw down $4.2 Billion from July 2019 onwards until as late as December 2019.

“Ironically, the Government had boasted the previous year that they had not used the Contingencies Fund in two years, 2017 and 2018, and it appeared to have been a matter of great pride to them…yet in the second half of 2019 when they were clearly in caretaker mode, they appeared to have no reservations about turning to the Contingencies Fund and drawing down no less than $4.2 billion,” he stated.

Déjà vu

Reflecting on the terrible state of the country’s economy in 1992 when

the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration entered office, and its track record of sound and responsible economic management, Dr Singh described the current situation as déjà vu.

“In some sense, I feel as though we are almost in déjà vu…because those of us who are old enough would recall we also inherited a country in which the economy was in disarray with unsustainable levels of debt which then had to be restructured and the public finances had to be literally rebuilt from scratch.”

According to Singh, however, the PPP has the track record for sound and responsible economic management and for policies that create an environment that is conducive and attractive to investment.

The senior Finance Minister noted that one simply has to look at what was achieved during the period 1992-2015 to remember when the country was returned from the brink of bankruptcy to a state where it was clearly on a path to prosperity.

“Notwithstanding the gloomy state of affairs that has been inherited, we have set about in earnest immediately, to turn the situation around on a number of fronts: First of all, a non-negotiable pre-requisite for an attractive investment environment is democracy and respect for the rule of law.

No international investor will come to a country that does not respect democracy,” Minister Singh emphasised.

GPL boosts capacity by 9.6 MW with 6 new Infant’s body found generators to ensure bright Christmas in WCD canal

ith electricity usage expected to surge in the upcoming weeks, the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has boosted its generating capacity to meet the demand of the holiday season with six additional units.

These generators are expected to add an additional 10 megawatts (MW) to the system, which currently has a 145-MW capacity.

According to the power company, the six power modules and associated transformers were procured at a cost of $475,422,029 and $80,886,430.

Three of the units will be installed at GPL’s Sophia, Georgetown location, while

the other three will be installed at GPL’s Onverwagt, West Berbice location.

Further, GPL added another four units as generation reserve – three of which will be installed at its Canefield, East Berbice location and one at the Anna Regina, Essequibo location.

GPL said the arrival of these units is in keeping with the company’s commitment to boost generation capacity and provide customers in the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) with reliable electricity.

Chairman of the GPL Board, Maurice Gajadhar noted that with the addition of the 10 MW from these six units, the total generating capacity of the system will now be approximately 155 MW. He explained that currently, the peak demand is about 120 MW, and in the height of the Christmas season (December 15 to January 15), this goes up to about 125 to 130 MW. This would mean that there would be at least 30 to 25 MW reserve capacity at peak.

Cane Grove road to be rehabilitated …as several ECD communities complain of poor roads

he road which connects the Mahaica Market to Cane Grove, which has been poorly maintained and is in a deplorable state, will soon be rehabilitated to ease the woes of residents.

This was announced

by Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill after he visited several areas along the East Coast of Demerara on Friday. Along with this key access road, three community streets will also be revamped. In an effort to deliver this promise at the soonest, the smaller network roads will be completed in one week, while the public road is expected to take two weeks.

Edghill assured residents that contractors will have to mobilise as soon as the contract is signed.

He indicated, “Cane Grove was forgotten for many many years. When we were in Government the last time, we did this road and we brought development to Cane Grove and it’s obvious that this road was not maintained and it is now in a very bad shape.”

This is not the only community which will see developmental works. The Minister would have inspected several roads and where necessary, urgent remedial works were ordered. A team of engineers also accompanied him, as the assessment continued throughout sections of Georgetown.

Over at the Vryheid’s Lust Bridge, expansion works will commence to allow for heavier vehicles to traverse. The two-lane bridge, Minister Edghill explained, will have the capacity to accommodate heavy-duty vehicles.

“So, on the main ECD thoroughfare, we will end up having six lanes. Four out on the main road and in this corridor, two lanes that will be running all the way from David Street to Enmore,” he announced.

At Sussex Street, a main bridge was damaged about two months ago and rehabilitation to mend the issue was not done. The bridge, which is the responsibility of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown, will undergo repairs by the Ministry. The Minister said that given the daily complaints, residents deserve the critical upgrade works, which can cost over $20 million.

A highlight project was the upgrade of the Kingston Band Stand – where another phase of the project is underway to develop a walkway towards the outskirts of the beautified area.

According to Police, the female infant’s body, measuring 12 inches in length, was discovered naked, floating with the face upwards

Following the discovery, the infant was escorted to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH)

by Police, where she was pronounced dead.

The body was later taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem.

2 in custody for raping 7-year-old

wo persons have been arrested by Police in Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), for the abduction and rape of a seven-year-old girl.

Regional Commander of Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni), Dion Moore on Saturday said: “There were two suspects implicated, we arrested the two suspects, they are still in custody, we have since launched an indepth investigation, including the representative from the Child Care Protection Agency.”

Commander Moore added that a file is currently being prepared to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and will be delivered no later than Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the sevenyear-old victim remains a patient at the Bartica Regional Hospital. The child’s mother realised that her daughter was missing when she awoke sometime after 04:00h to use the bathroom. The woman has since related that she went into her children’s bedroom to check on them and noticed that her daughter was

not in bed. She said that she made checks in the house but upon seeing the house door open she raised an alarm.

Neighbours joined her in her search for the child and they found her in a bushy area a short distance from her home.

The child was bloody, naked and in an unconscious state.

She was picked up and rushed to the Bartica Hospital. The search party also found one of the suspects in the area. In a video seen by this publication, residents of the community were consumed with anger while one of the suspects was being placed in the back of a police ATV to be taken to the station.

The residents were seen in the video armed with pieces of wood dealing the suspect several blows about his body. He has since implicated another person. Police have since taken the second person into custody. The child’s mother has been very critical of the police handling of the matter. She believes that had the police acted swiftly, her daughter would have been saved from the trauma she faced. An investigation has been launched.

ussia is starting its COVID-19 vaccination programme, with clinics in the capital Moscow inoculating those most at risk from the virus.

Its own vaccine Sputnik V, which was registered in August, is being used.

Developers say it is 95 per cent effective and causes no major side effects, but it is still undergoing mass testing.

Thousands of people have already registered to get the first of two jabs over the weekend, but it is unclear how much Russia can manufacture.

Producers are only expected to make two million doses of the vaccine by the end of the year.

P A H O / W H O Representative to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Dr Yitades Gebre revealed that “Barbados is one of the first countries to take action” for the procurement of the vaccine.

Bostic, in speaking to the readiness of Barbados to administer the vaccine once received, stated that although a deposit of $1.2 million was made through the COVAX Facility, there is still much work to be done before the vaccine could be offered to the public.

The facility is a partnership with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and its immunisation revolving fund, and the Caribbean Public Health Agency.

“We have started the process of developing the mechanisms to be able to deal with the execution now of the delivery of vaccines when they become available. That in itself is a massive undertaking requiring a lot of planning.

“A lot of logistics and also a lot of communications with the public to be able to get persons in Barbados to understand the importance of taking the vaccine,” Bostic said.

Bostic said the Ministry of Health and Wellness would make its recommendation from a health perspective, but noted other national factors would be taken into account.

crop of young Guyanese Chess players showed their skill over the past week, while participating in the FIDE Worldwide Youth and Cadet Tournament- Americas Selection. The tournament was played from December 2nd to 5th.

In what turned out to be a sensational performance from wildcard entry Angel Rahim, the teenager shook up the U18 female draw by rattling up 4 points before losing the seventh round with a possible top three finish in her sights.

In her sixth-round game she moved past Adani Clarke the Jamaican WCM FIDE, rated 1811. This had her well positioned in seventh place with 4 points from six games.

The phenomenal form of Rahim was the highlight of the Guyanese team and could place her among the best junior girls in the Americas. Some other credible performances from the Guyanese team came from Rahim’s male counterpart in the U18 category, Jaden Taylor with 2 points, the U10s Anaya

Lall and Arysh Raghunauth with two points each. There were also wins for U18 Sasha Sharrif and Ethan Lee, U12s Harmony Dodson and Kyle Couchman.

According to the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF), they are pleased to support the Country’s juniors at this event and look forward to escalating their junior program in the near future.

Williamson, Southee, Wagner star in dominant New Zealand victory – Blackwood scores second Test ton

n the end, it ended with a full ball from Neil Wagner.

The man who has turned bowling sustained short-ball spells into an art form got six wickets in New Zealand's first Test victory over West Indies, and only one of them via a short ball. It was the kind of end that was strangely fitting in a Test that New Zealand dominated, as evidenced by their victory margin of an innings and 134 runs, but where they were made to stretch themselves a bit further than they would have imagined. It still ended up being New Zealand's biggest win over West Indies in terms of innings victories, and their fifth biggest ever.

West Indies had got through the first hour of the fourth day with the overnight pair of Jermaine Blackwood and Alzarri Joseph still together.

Not only had t h e i r partnership crossed 150 - more than the entire firstinnings total We st Indies mustered - but Blackwood had also progressed t o a second Test century.

The clouds that had gathered for much of the third day had given way to bright sunshine on day four, and both Blackwood a n d Joseph continued

New Zealand were dominant

to be positive. That didn't mean they attacked indiscriminately, but they were assured while defending and leaving the ball, and full of punch when putting it away.

Blackwood showed great control of his game, not shelving his aggressive instincts but picking his moments well.

He had a bit of luck early on when Tim Southee got one to shape away beautifully in the channel and draw a leaden-footed drive, but New Zealand's catching woes that dogged them in the latter part of West Indies' second innings continued, and Ross Taylor put down a straightforward chance at first slip.

That was Blackwood's only blemish

in the first hour, and he got to his century via the patient route, through singles rather than any ambitiously aimed big shots.

Joseph, who had crossed fifty in a Test match for the first time, was impressive too.

He showed sound judgement of his off stump when leaving the ball, and had a full range of shots. When defending he got behind the line, and when a few balls were banged in short to him, he carted them in the arc between backward square leg and deep midwicket. He had shown vulnerability against the short ball earlier, but for that to come into play the bowlers needed to get it up to his throat. When the short ball sat up, Joseph was not hanging back.

The seventh-wicket stand kept flourishing until Kyle Jamieson made the breakthrough. He had pushed

Joseph on the back foot on the third day, and when he dangled one full and wide, Joseph went for it without the balance being quite right. He ended up slicing it off the toe end to deep cover to end a 155-run stand. After that the end was swift.

Wagner got his only wicket with a ball pitched in his half when Blackwood miscued a pull to backward square leg, cramped for room. In the same over, a fast and full delivery took out last-man Shannon Gabriel's stumps to give Wagner his fourth for the innings.

New Zealand had only needed nine wickets to bowl

West Indies out in both innings, with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich absent hurt both times, having injured his hand on the first day while keeping. West Indies captain Jason Holder later said it wasn't still certain whether Dowrich would be fit in time for the second and final Test, starting on December 11 in Wellington.

Kane Williamson was the undisputed Man of the Match for his masterful 251. Wagner's 4 for 66 were the best figures in the second innings, while Southee's 4 for 35 in the first innings had set up West Indies' collapse. (ESPNcricinfo)

While the GOA had made provision to grant Allicock a stipend, GOA President K.A. Juman-Yassin informed that the scholarship will last until the Olympic Qualifiers.

However, should he qualify, it would continue for a few more months.

“If he does not qualify for the Olympics, then it comes to an end; I believe the qualifying tournament comes sometime in May, so it means the scholarship will run until May. If he qualifies - and I sincerely hope that he would - then

it runs until August,” Yassin informed.

Guyana Boxing Association President, Steve Ninvalle, was very elated about the development.

“We’re extremely happy at the level of the Executive of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA). I think it’s fair to say that it’s the first time since I would have been at the helm of this association that we would’ve had a scholarship handed to one of our boxers,” the GBA boss opined.

Also speaking at the official handover ceremony on Saturday morning at the GOA Headquarters in Liliendaal, Allicock’s coach Sebert Blake pledged his commitment to seeing Keevin through to the Olympics.

“I just want to say thanks to the GOA for making what I would say is a great move in assisting Keevin to achieve his dream; and hopefully, we would be able to eclipse the medal Mr. Parris brought many moons ago. As coach of Keevin, I will try my utmost best to give as much to make sure that he comes out successful,” Blake shared.

On the receiving end of the benevolence, Allicock described the opportunity as a blessing that would allow him to put more focus and time into perfecting his craft ahead of the Olympics.

reparation for next year’s Olympic Games and qualifiers will be a little easier for boxing prodigy Keevin Allicock, after being awarded an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship.

With the Olympic Games on the horizon in 2021, Keevin Allicock has been afforded the luxury to focus entirely on his training, without having to worry about finances and stipends.

This is one benefit of the Olympic Solidarity Scholarship, of which Keevin is Guyana’s most recent recipient.

Badminton’s Narayan Ramdhani, Table Tennis’s Chelsea Edghill and Shemar Britton, and Track and Field’s Troy Doris, Winston George, Brenessa Thompson, Andrea Foster and Kadijah Baird have all benefitted from the programme.

While Allicock was not a part of the initial list of Guyanese to receive the scholarship, the non-compliance of one athlete opened the portal for Keevin to benefit, and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) did not hesitate to nominate him a second time.

Beharry’s blazing 61 propels Jai Hind Jaguars to 77-run win over West B/ce Masters

A

nil Beharry rolled back the years with a scorching unbeaten 61, which included four sixes in as many balls, to lead the Jai Hind Jaguars to a 77-run win over the West Berbice Masters.

After the match, played at the beautiful Jai Hind ground situated behind the Albion Police Station, the home team, Jaguars, remained unbeaten in the tournament and qualified for a quarter-final berth.

Earlier, the purple-clad Jai Hind Jaguars won the toss and

elected to bat first. They racked up 168-6 in their allotted 20 overs. Openers Imran Hussain (16) and Subramani Mangali (30) added 33 runs together. Mangali struck four boundaries and two sixes in his sparkling knock.

The dominant Keith Fraser was introduced into the attack and he opened the floodgates with some quick wickets. Fraser bowled Mangali all ends up, and removed Kamraj Sumair for 28.

Beharry, batting at number 7, began his innings cautiously, but the former Berbice Cricket Board President and senior team player finished his innings in destructive mode, smoking four sixes in four balls off an expensive Masiah Persad over, the final of the innings.

The burly Beharry faced 32 balls and scored 61 runs, decorated with five sixes and five fours. Bowling for the West Berbice team, Fraser starred with 3-12 in three overs.

In response, the West Berbice Masters were restricted to 92-5 in 20 overs, with Rajban Hemraj playing a lone hand with an unbeaten 36. In Jaguars’ collective bowling effort, Narine Deonarine claimed 2-12 in three overs.

At Everest Cricket Club ground, Everest Masters scored a

record-breaking total of 195-6, to register the highest total for the tournament. Opening batsmen Saheed Mohamed and Basil Persaud contributed exceptional scores of 66 and 65 respectively to propel their team to an impressive score. Nandkrishna Ram, on the bowling end, collected 2 wickets for 17 runs in his allotted three overs.

Over at the Enmore Community Centre ground, RP Construction Legends won the toss and elected to bat, but manage to post only 99 for 7 off their allotted 20 overs. Middle order batsman Parmanand Dindyal was the outstanding batsman for the Legends.

Bowling for Regal, Chien Gittens, Eion Abel, David Dick and Andre Percival each took a wicket.

In reply, Regal Masters made good their run chase, reaching 100 for 5 from just 14.1 overs. Roy Persaud stroked 5 fours and 1 six in a brilliant half century, before being bowled

by Ramchand Jailall for 51. Persaud’s innings complimented a favourable start made

by Anthony Ifill and Rudolph Baker of 18 and 11 respectively.

Bowling for the Legends, Ramchand Jailal returned excellent figures of 2 for 14 from 3 overs as Regal Masters

won by 5 wickets.

In the other match played at Enmore, WD Mavericks won the toss and inserted Bel-Air Rubis Ultra Tec to bat first. Bel-Air Rubis made good on their opportunity to take first strike, reaching 121 for 6 from their allotted 20 overs.

Middle order batsman Vishnu Ramjeet stroked an unbeaten 36, inclusive of 1 four and 1 six.

Lower order batsman Chandrika Jeenarine hit 1 four and 2 sixes in a valuable score of 25, while opening batsman Nirmaldeo Sarwan contributed 15.

Bowling for WD Mavericks, Davindra Ramdihal grabbed 2 for 20 from 3 overs.

In reply, the outstanding WD Mavericks team strangely choked to 113 for 7 from their allotted 20 overs. Informed opening batsman Muneshwar Balgobin stroked 5 fours in a constructive 31, while number 6 batsman Nigel Vieira hit a solitary boundary (6) in his contribution of 21. Nohan Chaitram and Sohan Bedesse contributed 15 and 14 respectively.
