During a community meeting with residents of Yupukari and surrounding satellite villages, President Ali said funds are currently being spent on developing the infrastructure in the region.

“Our primary objective is to ensure the lives of all the people of our country are improved. And whatever benefits on the coastland must be available for you, and we will ensure you too benefit,” he promised.

The President told residents that he and members of his Cabinet were there to lend assistance. “Today we are here to listen to you, to listen to your concerns, to listen to your ideas, to listen to what issues you might be facing, so that we could work with you in finding solutions,” he declared

Rebuilding infrastructure

President Ali explained that, this year, the region would see a rebuilding of its infrastructure, and the Government would spend $3.7 billion on hinterland roads and bridges, which would open up new communities and farmlands.

With respect to the road project, the Head of State, at the opening of the Rupununi Rodeo, had related that the contract has already been

awarded for the rebuilding of all bridges along the Lindento-Lethem Road to meet international concrete standards.

Additionally, a contract

has been signed for the paving of the highway from Linden to Mabura Hill, and according to President Ali, Government is exploring the different formulas to have the bridge completed and the road paved all the way into Lethem.

Further, he disclosed to the residents that Government would install 30,000 solar panel units in several hinterland communities.

“Every single household will have access to the solar panels and the additional auxiliary…you deserve it; you deserve the same development, the same opportunities [like the coastland].”

Ali assured that Government would set aside resources for the development of sporting facilities, so that young people can have a chance to enhance their skills. TURN TO PAGE 13

One Guyana Easter Monday

O

ne of the most intriguing aspects of Guyanese life is the gradual evolution of the practices of the various cultures and religions into new forms that are accepted by each other without any compulsion, and, in the process, creating a most unique “Guyanese Culture”. Easter exemplifies this synergistic melange as much as any of the other forms.

Brought to these shores by the European colonists, especially the Protestant English that was the last to rule Guyana, Easter is a Christian observance that was transmitted to the African slaves, several waves of Indentured servants Indian, Chinese and African - and in an ironic inversion, lastly to the Indigenous Peoples. The Portuguese from Madeira had their own Catholic Easter tradition.

While, at its core, Easter is the commemoration of the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus, who had been crucified three days earlier (now called “Good Friday”), it illustrates the anthropological truism that all practices are culturally embedded. Jesus, for instance, was from a culture that was completely different from those into which christianity spread; and even in these, historians can trace the changes absorbed or imposed by the various cultures.

Saul, who became Paul, first sallied among the Greeks, and the earliest language in which “Christianity” was spread - and the New Testament was written - was Greek. Even today, some of these early Greek words have to be analysed for ideas that may have been ‘lost in translation’. After the Roman Emperors became Christians and spread Christianity in “pagan” Europe at the point of the sword, the form of the religious organisation adopted the imperial structure of the Roman Empire - with the Pope replacing the Emperor at the apex, and Cardinals, Bishops and priests occupying the lower echelons of the hierarchy.

Most pertinently for our discussion, several European “pagan” traditions were adopted and inculturated into Christian practices, such as Christmas and Easter. The word “Easter” itself is from this source, as are hot cross buns, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies. The Easter hat parade would have come later from the English. Accordingly, our kite flying, Bartica Regatta and Rupununi Rodeo are merely continuing a long tradition of change.

For a multi-religious society as Guyana, this process of cultural cross-pollination and diffusion is important in creating a national ethos. The important caution is that the process should include all the religious practices, and not privilege any along the lines Christianity was for most of Guyana’s history. Muslims are presently commemorating Ramadan, Hindus celebrated Holi in March, and now Christians will do so for Easter today.

Each festival has acquired peculiarly “Guyanese” characteristics around the core “religious” commemoration, and it is a mark of our progressive maturity as a nation that we should not allow this process to be short-circuited.

Commendably, President Irfaan Ali commended a National Day of Fasting for Lent, Ramadan and Navratri, which coincided this year.

We must reject those who preach religion in a language that spreads hate and exclusion to almost everything and everyone outside their narrow belief system. This transgresses the warp and woof of our multi-religious tradition. While some speak of “tolerance”, there are growing signs that the new Guyanese standard of religious practice is outright acceptance of the right of the “other” to practice the tenets of their religion, without condemnation and hate.

At Easter, Christian Guyanese attend their churches to express their faith and belief in why Jesus was born, and the meaning of His death and Resurrection. Most other Guyanese would be flying their kites with their children in parks and open spaces, and enjoying their snacks and goodies picnic-style in a manner that brings families closer together. We would like to believe this is in consonance with the wider message of Easter.

Unfortunately, the somewhat less-than-salubrious practice of heavy alcohol consumption and all its negative effects have also crept into the Easter commemorations - as they have into every other holiday. We ask that Guyanese abjure this aspect of our “culture”, so that all of us could enjoy a “Happy Easter”.

Enabler of Guyanese democracy passes on in America Dear Editor, Yash Pal Soi, an enabler of democracy in Guyana, has passed on.

The Guyana Democracy Project, headed by Dr. Tara Singh, says in a release that that the Guyanese American community is deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of the great community advocate and a champion of democracy in Guyana during the authoritarian years and the five months’ election impasse of 2020. It notes that Yash made a significant contribution to the anti-dictatorial movement in New York. And he organised several fundraisers for Dr. Jagan and the PPP before the 1992 elections.

Yash also lobbied Members of Congress and the Reagan and Bush Administrations to put pressure on the Hoyte Administration to liberalise the political and economic system. Yash Pal Soi organised and funded the costs of a Guyana Democracy Float in the 1991 India Day Parade on Madison Ave with a banner emblazoned with the words “Dr Cheddi Jagan: Next President of Guyana”. The float made a big hit at the pa-

rade, where thousands of Guyanese lined the route.

At the time of his death, he was working on an idea to build a cultural center in Guyana.

Through my appeal for his assistance, Yash lobbied Congress to issue statements calling on the Granger Administration to accept the outcome of the Mar 2, 2020 vote.

Yash was hired by New York City as an engineer in the 1970s, rising to the position of Chief Engineer during the 1980s. He was honoured by then Mayor Ed Koch’s Administration for his professionalism, and by various organisations for his professional achievement and for improvement of community life. He was among a few who were honoured with the Ellis Island Freedom Award, an honour that was also conferred on President Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Yash was the founder of several organisations, including the Federation of Indian Associations that organised the annual India Day Parade.

Presidents Jagdeo and Ramotar participated in one of the parades. Yash is also known as the person who arranged for Bollywood movies to be

shown in NY since the 1970s, providing entertainment for early Guyanese immigrants.

He organised several concerts of Bollywood stars in NY, including Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore, Mukesh, Manna Dey, and others. He became close with Guyanese community leaders – a closeness that began in the 1980s when he joined the struggle for free and fair elections in Guyana.

He worked closely with a group of us, inclusive of Ramesh Kalicharran and Arjune Karshan (of ACG), who were deeply involved in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Guyana. Yash helped to advance the cause of democracy in Guyana, introducing activists like myself to members of Congress and New York State, as well as New York City politicians and to the mainstream and community media.

Yash was introduced to Dr. Jagan, with whom he became very close, hosting him (when he was Opposition Leader) several times on his weekly radio programme. Yash also used his influence in the broadcast media to get him interviews with the community ITV station as

well as with mainstream newspaper and magazine publications. Interviews of Dr. Jagan appeared in several American publications.

Yash also arranged for Dr. Jagan to meet with officials of the Carter Center in Atlanta. After Jagan was elected as President, at a banquet in New York, Dr. Jagan publicly referred to Yash Pal Soi as “a Guyanese freedom fighter”.

Yash was honoured by President Jagdeo in 2011 with a plaque at a special function at State House.

The NY-based Guyana Democracy Project, in its release, expresses its gratitude to Yash Pal Soi for his significant contributions to improving the conditions of Guyanese and other immigrants in the US, as well as for the struggle for free and fair elections in Guyana.

It writes: “We convey our condolences to the members of the Soi family as we all mourn the passing of this great personality. His memory will live on the India Day parade that he conceived as well as the struggle for free and fair elections in Guyana”.

A season to reflect, and not inflict conflict

Dear Editor, Not so popular in Guyana, not highlighted or observed on a large scale, the important Jewish festival referred to as Passover, or what is known as Pesach in Hebrew, is being celebrated this year in the Jewish communities throughout the world, commencing on the evening of April 15 and concluding on the evening of April 23.

Also referred to as The Festival of Freedom, this period commemorates the liberation of the children of Israel, who were led out of Egypt by Moses. This celebration goes back to 1300 BC, according to The Book of Exodus. History reveals that the children of Israel had been in slavery for some 210 years.

Jewish teachings reflect that God had promised to release them from this bondage, but the Pharaoh had denied Moses his bequest when broached with the topic. There were ten plagues on the land, the final claiming the lives of all the firstborn Egyptians and animals. The Israelites were told to sprinkle blood on the doorposts so that their homes would be passed over

and their firstborn saved.

This final wrath proved to affect the transitioning of the Israelites from slavery to freedom.

Part of the tradition is the participating meal (Seder), to remove all leaven from their possession for seven days, eating bitter herbs and matzah (flour and water mixed and baked before the dough can rise), drinking wine, retelling the story, and singing.

It is also a pilgrim festival when Jews would make one of three special efforts to visit the Temple in Jerusalem, according to the commandments in the Torah. Also referred to as the Festival of Spring, it was an agricultural festival for production and harvesting when the Jews lived in ancient Palestine.

The significance of Passover symbolises hope and starting afresh for a new life. The remaining Jewish holidays are Purim, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Chanukah. The Hebrew greeting is “Chag Sameach”, or “Chag Pesach Sameach”, meaning “Happy Passover Holidays.”

For the Christians, Jesus Christ is referred to as the “Lamb of God,” having shared the Passover meal (the last supper) with his disciples, and being the fulfillment of the Passover.

The 15th was Good Friday, observing the day Jesus Christ was nailed on the Cross. The period of Lent ended on the 14th. This was also a time that included fasting and abstinence (the need to make a sacrifice and give up something of specific pleasure).

Commencing with Ash Wednesday, the duration ends on Monday with the celebration of Easter. This four-day holiday weekend incorporates the Muslim sisters and brothers observing Ramadhan, the holy month of fasting, from sunrise to sunset.

Fasting is one of the Pillars of Islam, the others being daily prayer, declaration of faith, charity, and performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The fasting period ends with the celebration of Eid-Al-Fitr. On Saturday 16th, Hindus celebrated Hanuman Jayanti, the adoration of paying homage to Shri Hanuman Ji’s

There must be strict adherence to town and country planning Dear Editor, Guyana is on a rapid developmental trajectory, and, as such, we must avoid all the pitfalls that Third World developing states are prone to make. I make specific reference to the way we utilise the land space available around us in a decent and well-ordered fashion.

That landmass that has been entrusted to us was meant to be fashioned and modelled in ways that befit a modern society; that is: its roads, bridges highways, housing, shopping complexes - I am talking about the whole infrastructural landscape. If strict laws are not put into our planning, then we would be well into the setting up of a modern ghetto.

So, it all hinges on the platform of setting up a proper town and country planning code. There must be strict adherence to mapped out areas for specific developmental works, such as housing and settlements, industrial zones, as well as open spaces which are to be reserved for the recreation of the citizens as well as be open for the free passage of clean air. In summary, the primary objectives of town and country planning are to ensure sustainable economic development and a better environment in which to live.

The foregoing has serious implications for planning, especially in urban areas, where there is a total dis-

regard for open stretches of land. In Guyanese backward culture, open spaces - especially those near roadways or major development projects are an invitation to squat or to encumber for one’s own personal use. It is a bugbear that has taken our country by storm, and something which Government must address. This problem must be stopped immediately.

This lawlessness can be seen in many places across the country. Specific mention is made of the East and West Coast and East and West Bank of Demerara. In all of the communities mentioned, urban squatting has become an ever-present problem.

The trainline embankment roadway, built to ease the traffic congestion in that area, has suddenly become a big problem in itself, with many persons building permanent structures on the road shoulders and parapets.

There are dwelling houses, bars, betting shops as well as houses of ill repute existing here. What is going on in our country?

The British Developer Ebenezer Howard captured the true spirit of what modern society ought to be. He did this when he formulated The New Town, Green Belt Strategy, and in this regard, Guyana can do well in the implementation of this system here. We have the land space which is ideal for zoning, hence this must be implemented in order that we

build for ourselves a modern developed country; or, God forbid, build a massive ghetto.

As Guyana moves into a modern future, there must be an aggressive, if not brutal, plan to get those persons and encumbrances off Government reserves.

With the commissioning of the new Eccles-to-Mandela Highway, Government must look out for the squatters and roadside builders; persons who have no care for town and country development, who would otherwise cause a well-structured society to deteriorate into an eyesore. This cannot be allowed to take place.

Will the perpetual influence of the significance of the religious season blossom into embracing all the meaningful attributes ascribed and prescribed in all the holy books, manifest into reality and be applicable in our daily lives, especially for the leaders in the political arena in this beloved country we love as one Guyana? Will there be the pathway of untruth to truth and darkness to light? How many will uphold the grace of honesty and discard dishonesty? The advent of selflessness and discarding self-

ishness is being preached at this time, but will there be the practice of this contribution toward the welfare of this country, so that transparency reflects the heart, mind and soul of all?

The liberation of oneself from bondage is advocated, do we want to continue to tie ourselves to the wicked and evil ways of the past to inflict conflict, or announce the denouncement of unrighteousness to pronounce righteousness?

Like the Pharaoh, who will choose to shackle a nation to duress and hold the people to ransom by feeding them with lies and deceits, rather than, like Moses, providing freedom of alternative to decide on facts and figures and a way to salvation?

Isn’t this an ideal time to gladly accept the opportunity to atone for dishonorable behaviour in and outside of one’s home? Why should we still resort to threats and violence when we do not achieve any gains by devious means? To deliber-

ately block the progressive projects ascribing towards the rapid development of this nation heralds the infamous parables of the unheroic deeds of devils and demons, described in the stories of ancient times.

Perhaps the swearing into office by holding the holy books to uphold law and order will provide a change in approach with open eyes rather than minds closed, to avoid bringing disrepute to the public domain!

Let’s hope this traditional festive season will proclaim a change of heart and see the will of the people being displayed in the efforts and advocacy of the leaders in words, deeds, and actions. Can we separate the sweet from the bitter for the better of all together?

May that Unseen One bless this country, so that all may survive equally with a breath of fresh air, which is still available for free.

Hope can never be lost

Dear Editor, Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday are excellent reminders to Guyanese and the world over that all loss leads to something new. The message at its core teaches us that hope can never be lost, no matter how tough situations become; the rainbow always comes after the storm.

We, the Guyana Islamic Forum for Education, Peace and Religious Solidarity, the Electric Mosque’s Presentation of the Teachings of Islam, in association with the Universal Peace Federation – Guyana, seize this opportunity to extend Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday greetings to the nation of Guyana, His Excellency President Irfaan Ali and family, distinguished members of the Government, the Opposition, and especially to our Christian brothers and sisters.

With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions having been relaxed, people are now finding it more freeing to cel-

ebrate and bask in the sunshine.

So, we are stepping into Easter 2022 with gratefulness in our hearts, as we celebrate knowing that we have been given this most humbling opportunity.

Let us use this auspicious time to express love to our neighbours, and to meet the needs of those who are less fortunate in our midst.

May we embody the virtues of love, sacrifice, forgiveness, bravery, and resilience that Jesus (PBUH) embodied and remarkably displayed during His earth-

ly mission.

n this fun and easy science experiment, we’re going to explore and investigate if the ocean can freeze.

Materials:

Dry erase markers Spoon Water Two large plastic bowls Salt Freezer

Instructions:

Use the dry erase marker to label the bowls “Bowl 1” and “Bowl 2”.

Pour four cups of water into each bowl.

Add two tablespoons of salt slowly into Bowl 1. Stir until dissolved. There may be a little salt remaining in the bottom of the bowl.

Put both of the bowls in the freezer and leave overnight.

Record your results the next day.

How it works:

Fresh water freezes at zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). When salt is added to water, it lowers the freezing point of the water by several degrees. The salt water can still freeze, but it will require a temperature lower than zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) to do so.

Make this a science project:

But today I recapture the islands' bright beaches: blue mist from the ocean rolling into the fishermen's houses.

By these shores I was born: sound of the sea came in at my window, life heaved and breathed in me then with the strength of that turbulent soil.

Since then I have travelled: moved far from the beaches: sojourned in stoniest cities, walking the lands of the north in sharp slanting sleet and the hail, crossed countless saltless savannas and come to this house in the forest where the shadows oppress me and the only water is rain and the tepid taste of the river.

We who are born of the ocean can never seek solace in rivers: their flowing runs on like our longing, reproves us our lack of endeavour and purpose, proves that our striving will founder on that.

We resent them this wisdom, this freedom: passing us toiling, waiting and watching their cunning declension down to the sea.

But today I would join you, travelling river, borne down the years of your patientest flowing, past pains that would wreck us, sorrows arrest us, hatred that washes us up on the flats; and moving on through the plains that receive us, processioned in tumult, come to the sea.

Bright waves splash up from the rocks to refresh us, blue sea-shells shift in their wake and there is the thatch of the fishermen's houses, the path made of pebbles, and look!

Small urchins combing the beaches look up from their traps to salute us: they remember us just as we left them.

The fisherman, hawking the surf on this side of the reef, stands up in his boat and halloos us: a starfish lies in its pool.

And gulls, white sails slanted seaward, fly into the limitless morning before us.

Summary

In the poem, the persona is reflecting on the island home of his childhood. He has travelled to many places, but appears to be constantly homesick. He remarks the stark contrasts between the "stoniest cities" and his own homeland, and seems overcome with happiness once he recounts the wondrous memories of his childhood. The title, "South" seems to refer to the southern hemisphere, including the Caribbean islands (the likely origin of the persona considering that the poet is Barbadian), the southern US states, South America and the southern states of Africa. The persona juxtaposes his southern island home, full of bright beaches and warm people, with the "lands of the north", the northern lands having unfavourable weather conditions, colder people and a lack of the ocean which our persona so desperately longs for. The theme is nature, idealisation of childhood and nostalgia. The mood could also be described as nostalgic and longing.

Indian investors show interest in Guyana’s infrastructure development – Indian High Commissioner ...says East Coast to East Bank Demerara bypass road project to soon come on stream

he high-profile Indian investors who visited Guyana last week are exploring investment opportunities in a number of areas, with a keen interest in infrastructure development.

That six-member delegation, led by Chairman of the DY Patil Group, Dr Ajeenkya DY Patil, included former Indian Cricket captain Kapil Dev of the Dev Group of Companies; Chairman of Vishwa Samudra Group and owner of Krishnapatnam Port India, Chinta Sasidhar; Rajesh Puri, Dev Features Ltd, and Ashish Kataria, Director Ashoka Buildcon Ltd. Dr Patil is Guyana’s Honorary Consul in India, and was the driving force behind organising the visit, in collaboration with the Indian High Commission in Georgetown.

Speaking with Guyana Times, Indian High Commissioner Dr K.J. Srinivasa explained that the investors who came are from companies that are into infrastructure development – ports, roads and health facilities, among others.

During the four-day visit, they met with local stakeholders from the Government, led by President Dr Irfaan Ali and some of his Cabinet Ministers, the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC), and other Private Sector players.

“They had very fruitful engagements, and they are trying to, you know, see which particular sectors in-

terest them… There are various potential projects they discussed with many people. So, yes, they are exploring various options,” Dr Srinivasa explained.

He added that the team also did a site visit to the various housing projects being done by the Guyana Government.

According to the Indian High Commissioner, “This is a good time [for the visit, because] we are seeing that the interests by the Indian investors are at an all-time high.”

The Indian diplomat further disclosed that the legendary cricket superstar Kapil Dev, whose company specialises in sport infrastructure, also expressed interest in future collaborations in Guyana.

“He was also seeing if they can help with the stadium lighting and everything… Anything that’s gonna come up. These are all potential projects,” Dr Srinivasa posited.

Moreover, among the group of investors was a Director from Ashoka Buildcon Ltd, which is the company that was awarded the contract for the East Coast to East Bank bypass road project, which is being funded by the Indian Government.

“We also did site visits for road and everything… that project, we will hear some good news in the next week.

We are working on the various approvals and so,” the Indian High Commissioner indicated.

It was announced in January that Ashoka won the contract to construct the

Ogle, East Coast Demerara to Eccles, East Bank Demerara road ahead of two other Indian companies.

Since then, the Guyana Government has written the Indian Exim Bank, through diplomatic channels, to seek its no objection for the Ogle to Eccles bypass road to be constructed by Ashoka, which has built a number of bridges and roads in India.

Back in 2015, the Indian Government had provided a US$50 million Line of Credit (LOC) for the road link that was initially slated for Ogle to Diamond, EBD. However, the project cost was driven up to over $208 million by the previous A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government, and was left languishing under them.

However, when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government took office in 2020, it redesigned the project into two phases to fit the LOC. The first phase is from Ogle to Haags Bosch road, which is about 48-50 per cent of the project, and the second phase is from Haags Bosch to Diamond, in order to fit the US$50 million LOC. Because of these changes in the scope of the project, additional approvals were required from New Delhi, and after several months, this was obtained in February 2021.

Meanwhile, Dr Srinivasa further related to this newspaper that the High Commission is planning to host other similar high-profile delegations from India throughout this year.

get a team from Guyana – Government and Private Sector officials – to travel to India to meet with potential investors.

“We are working very closely with GOInvest (Guyana Office for Investment) because we want it to be a twoway street,” the High Commissioner has posited.

Of recent, there has been mounting interest in Guyana’s burgeoning economy and the abundance of business opportunities here.

In fact, last month, a high-level delegation of world-renowned India-based leading Hospital chain, Narayana Hrudayalaya, visited Guyana and held

discussions with President Ali and Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony as they explore opportunities to invest in the healthcare sector of Guyana.

Additionally, back in December, GO-Invest and Guyana’s High Commission in India had a multi-sectoral investment exchange with the Mumbai-based TATA Group, a multinational conglomerate. The company was told of the vast investment opportunities in the agriculture, energy, manufacturing, technology, and tourism sectors in Guyana.

With TATA’s massive and diverse portfolio across the globe, the preliminary discussions were able to

identify sectors in which the Government of Guyana and TATA could work together to boost Guyana’s capacities and open doors for largescale sustainable investments here.

Company representatives gave a brief overview of the operations of the various companies under TATA, including the TATA Power Ltd, an electric utility company based in Mumbai. The representative of the company pointed out that there is potential for the company to tap into the energy sector of Guyana. It was also noted that Guyana could benefit from the company’s technological access to improve its productive capacity.

Man convicted of raping 8-yearold appeals life sentences

hirty-Seven-year-old Micah Williams’s appeal against a rape conviction and subsequent life sentences was recently heard by the Court of Appeal of Guyana, presided over by Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag), Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, with Justices Dawn Gregory and Rishi Persaud in attendance.

A former trade unionist, Williams was found guilty of penetrating an 8-year-old girl both vaginally and anally between January 1 and December 31, 2016, when she was between seven and eight years old, following a trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow in the Demerara High Court in April 2018.

He was also found guilty of sodomising the little girl on January 2, 2017.

Dissatisfied with the decision of the trial court, Williams, through his lawyers Nigel Hughes and Ronald Daniels, mounted an appeal.

In his submissions before the Appellate Court, Daniels contended that the

trial Judge did not fairly put his client’s defence to the jury. In this regard, he explained that this was more of a “narrow issue”, that had to do with the complainant being “prompted” to respond to questions.

Despite the jury’s verdict, Daniels has argued that his client was not the one who had abused the girl. To this end, he contended that two persons had “guided” the complainant to implicate his client, to cover up for a 14-year-old boy who had actually committed the act.

Williams’s lawyers are also challenging his sentences on the grounds that they are manifestly excessive and are not in keeping with established sentencing guidelines.

For her part, Senior State Counsel Natasha Backer has argued that the trial Judge would have “more than sufficiently” put Williams’s defence to the jury.

While referring to aspects of the records of appeal, Backer said, “Here, the Judge would have remind-

ed the jury about the alleged conspiracy that [Williams] was relying on as the crux of his defence. The trial Judge reminded the jury of [Williams’s] insistence that it was not he who would have committed the acts in question.”

The Appeal Court has reserved its judgement in this matter.

Reacting to the jury’s verdicts in the High Court, Williams had called them “strange”, while professing his innocence.

“I find it strange this would be the position of the jury,” the convict had said as he described that day as the most terrifying day of his life.

In her sentencing remarks, Justice Barlow had reprimanded an unremorseful Williams, whom she had called out for shifting the blame on the teenage boy.

While telling the convict he could not play ignorant to the evidence, Justice Barlow had highlighted the severe damage the abuse had caused to the young girl’s

body. She told Williams that although he fought for the rights of workers, he had violated the trust the child had in him. In the end, Williams was sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the two charges. The sentences were to run concurrently, and he was to become eligible for parole only after serving 20 years.

Justice Barlow had also ordered that the convict must undergo counselling tailored for sex offenders.

Businessman awaits sentencing for killing teen

entencing for businessman Junior France, who has been found guilty of fatally shooting 17-year-old Dane Jerrick on May 17, 2020, has been deferred to April 29.

The 44-year-old France was initially indicted for murder of the teen, but following a trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow in the Essequibo High Court,

the 12-member mixed jury found him guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter.

During his trial, France was represented

by Attorneys-at-Law Nigel Hughes and Ronald Daniels, while Senior State Counsel Tiffini Lyken had appeared on behalf of the prosecution.

It was reported that at about 03:30h on the day in question, at Puruni Landing,

Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), Jerrick was shot in the lower back by the businessman.

The teen’s uncle, George Jerrick, had told Guyana Times that family members were told that his nephew and a driver had had an argument which had quickly escalated into a scuffle, during which Jerrick had attempted to escape the blows,

his weapon and shot Jerrick.

It was reported that after the shooting, an angry mob had stormed the businessman’s shot and carted off a quantity of goods. The mob had even attempted to burn the building down, but had managed only to scorch a section of the shop.

…Guyana ite flying is a venerable tradition that’s enjoyed by the young and not-so-young in so many countries in the world. Who among us hasn’t looked up at the birds soaring so effortlessly in the sky and wondered what it must feel like? Didn’t that Greek kid Icarus fly with wings attached by wax to his arms - but ignored his father’s warning not to fly too close to the sun??

Predictably, the wax melted, and he plunged back into the sea and croaked!! Maybe that’s the origin of the idiom “Go fly a kite!”, meaning, to “beat it”!!??

Well…not being able to enjoy the modern wings used in hang gliding on our flat-as-pancake coastland, the closest we’ve been able to enjoy flying is flying our kites!! And THAT was one of the joys of your Eyewitness’s dissolute youthful life. Making a kite was a basic skill that every boy of his generation had to imbibe if he wanted to retain any self-respect!! His mother’s “pointer” broom was pilfered to make the frame. “Glue” was obtained from the “gamma” fruit - of which a few could also be eaten by the more intrepid!! The “kite paper” had to be bought with hard earned (chores!) pennies and sweets forgone!! The tail was scrounged from his mother’s old skirts!! And those “frills” at the sides!!

But what could match the feeling of transcendental joy when that kite took off at the sea wall, to which his mother would’ve taken him and his siblings on Easter Monday?? Nothing!! Not even the potato balls with sour that his mother packed away in her picnic basket!! That kite would be buzzing and flitting about like a bumble bee on steroids!! Sure, some mean kids, with their fancy, much bigger “wood kites,” scoffed at his “pointer broom” kite. But did they make their kites themselves? Was it their own creation, that they could merge with as the kite rose into the sky when they let out their “reel” to its max?? Even if it touched the sun, it wouldn’t have melted, since “gamma” hardens - not melts - with heat!!

Today, most kites are sold on city pavements, and kids seem to’ve lost the art of kite-making. Can they merge with those kites soaring in the sky? Now, your Eyewitness accepts change as inevitable, but Jeez… those “Chinese” plastic monstrosities!! They violate the spirit of a Guyanese Easter! While our kites were colourful, they were patterned by the structure of the frame, and not gaudy. Or kitsch!!

So, as you read this, dear reader, close your eyes and imagine your Eyewitness communing with higher powers of the universe through his kite!! Happy Easter!! …naysayers!!

This time, your Eyewitness IS using the phrase “go fly a kite” as meaning “go away”, scram, vamoose, or as we say, “gwan da side”!! And he’s addressing all those who’re criticising Pres Ali for reaching out to those canecutters at Uitvlugt, who’re out of work 'cause the mill that grinds the cane is down. And will be up at the very best by August!!

Now, for those who don’t know, cane cutters only work for half-a-year, in the 2 “grinding seasons”. They survive during the other half-of-the-year on savings scrounged during the crop. The casual labour they’re now getting is priced at minimum wage - most likely some $2000/ daily. How can this take care of a family of four?? And yet the critics are coming out of the woodwork yelling “Favouritism!!”

Up to now, it’s private citizens who’ve been organising relief for the workers. And it’s not only cane cutters who’re affected. What about the spillover in the communities from the reduced money circulating?

Take a hike, critics!! …but remember the day We Guyanese have a habit of “sporting” at the drop of a hat. It doesn’t matter what’s the holiday, we break out the bottles and music and get down.

CANU seizes $2.4M in cocaine Businessman killed by during Bel Air Avenue raid speeding motorcycle in Bartica

our persons, including a teenager, were taken into custody following the discovery of a quantity of cocaine and ganja at Bel Air Avenue, Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown on Saturday.

Based on reports received, ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) conducted an operation at a residence in Bel Air Avenue, Lamaha Gardens, during which two parcels of cocaine and a quantity of cannabis were unearthed.

At the time of the raid, three adults and a teenager were in the house, and they have been taken into custody.

Those arrested are: 55-year-old Keith King, who is no stranger to CANU, having been charged in the case wherein cocaine was found in a lumber shipment in 2013; Dexter Stuart, 49, and Altheann Lyte, 33.

The motorcycle that struck the 54-year-old resident of First Avenue, Bartica, CJ 5268, was at the time being driven by a 19-year-old miner.

Based on reports received, on Saturday, at about 22:10h, the teenager was driving the motorcycle with another teen as his pillion rider. They were heading in a northerly direction along the western carriageway of First Avenue reportedly at a fast rate of speed when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and it collided with Persaud, who was standing on the western parapet of the said roadway.

bodies. Persaud, however, was seen lying on the roadway in an unconscious state. They were all picked up and taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where Persaud was pronounced dead on arrival, while the two teenagers were treated and sent away. morgue to await a post mortem.

However, the motorcycle was lodged with the Police as investigations continue. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motorcycle, but no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.

Acting Top Cop urges junior Police Officers to “get their act together”

cting Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken has urged junior officers of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to “get their acts together.”

Addressing those ranks at the Officers’ Training Centre on Camp Road, Georgetown, Hicken said it is mandatory that those officers act within the jurisdiction of the law. He has warned that they would now be closely watched.

“I am not going to ask you to do anything outside the realm or scope of your work…you will be judged based on your performance,” he said.

Among those he addressed were Cadet Officers, Assistant Superintendents and Deputy Superintendents, many of whom are Sub-Divisional Officers, Divisional Detective Officers, and Officers in Charge of Traffic in their respective Divisions.

The meeting, held on Thursday, came on the heels of several similar meetings

that were initiated by the acting Commissioner.

He gave the junior officers a comprehensive charge and strict mandate to ‘serve and protect’, and to change the negative image and perception that members of the public have of the Force.

He highlighted specific areas that they, as middle managers, can improve upon; such as professionalism, accountability, and partnership.

Hicken used the forum to further remind the officers of their important roles and responsibilities, as outlined in the Standing Orders, coupled with the implementation of the Strategic Pillars of the 2022-2026 Strategic Plan.

He told the junior officers that it is imperative for them to understand that change is necessary, as the Force’s administration tries to create an atmosphere that would aid improvement of service delivery to the public.

there are gaps in the organisation, the Top Cop stated: “We've got to identify the gaps, and we're going to fill those gaps as a collective.

I want to remind you that the chain is as strong as its weakest link, and so you're going to complement each other in terms of knowledge and experience.”

The Commissioner has also addressed the laissez-faire attitude exhibited by the junior officers, and made it clear that members of the Force would be evaluated and promoted based on performance.

He reminded the junior officers that they have a responsibility to effectively police their respective sub-divisions by providing the service as mandated by the GPF.

Belfield-to-Rosignol Road project

10 int’l, local contractors bid to redesign, widen road A

total of 10 international and local contractors have thrown their hats in the ring for the contract to redesign and widen the road from Belfield, East Coast Demerara (ECD) to Rosignol, West Coast Berbice (WCB).

Expressions of Interest were invited by the Public Works Ministry for the contract, which is for a consultant to provide services for “the redesign of an existing road network on the East Coast of Demerara: Belfield to Rosignol.”

The bids were opened at the offices of the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), revealing three bids from joint venturers (JV), including a JV between local company NK Enterprise Incorporated and Abdulaziz Alsaqabi.

Another JV submitting their bid was local firm E&A Consultancy Incorporated in association with Obaid Engineering Consultancy.

Office (AECO), also submitted bids. The latter company, which is another Kuwaiti-based firm, has offices in several parts of the world, and has experience in both designing and supervising the construction of projects ranging from airports to roads.

E N G I N E E R I N G CONSULTANCY (AEC) was the only solo bid by any of the contractors whose bids were opened.

According to the company on its website, its work experience spans transportation, irrigation, energy, water supply, and the agriculture sector.

The Belfield to Rosignol road widening was intended

to be a continuation of the East Coast Road Widening and Expansion Project, which was commissioned in 2020. The US$50.2 million project was supposed to have two components: a four-lane expansion from Better Hope to Annandale, and an upgrade to the existing two-lane road from Annandale to Belfield.

Back in 2019, a grant

of Kuwaiti Dinars (KD) 500,000 was approved from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to conduct a technical and economic feasibility study for this very project - the redesign of the Belfield to Rosignol road network.

In 2016, the Government of Guyana and the People’s Republic of China had, through the China ExportImport Bank, signed a $9.6 billion (US$45.5 million) concessional loan for completion of the widening of the road between Better Hope and Belfield. The Government had contributed approximately $3 billion towards the project.

Last year, it was announced that the Government had gotten approval from its counterparts in China to utilise the sums saved on the ECD road widening and improvement contract (when the road was commissioned, the cost at the time was US$43 million) to execute 24 additional connector roads linked to the project.

The ECD connector roads tie into the

Government’s infrastructural development agenda that is linked to other transformational projects.

These roads would provide easier access and reduce traffic congestion when the Ogle-Eccles thoroughfare comes on stream. That four-lane highway would connect the ECD and East Bank Demerara corridors.

Last Thursday, Government commissioned the much-anticipated Mandela-to-Eccles fourlane Highway. The $2.6 billion four-lane road runs from Mandela Avenue all the way to Eccles, EBD, and works are currently ongoing on a second phase to further extend the road to Great Diamond, EBD. Construction was executed by eight contractors, and work was completed in less than one year. The road features an asphaltic and concrete round-about with reinforced concrete sidewalks. The four-lane roadway runs for 2.8 kilometres, and includes parking lanes, 12 bridges, stones on the median, and 214 solar-powered lamps, among other amenities.

ustainable development and maintenance of the Number 63 Beach will need very large input from the

Government, according to the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce.

On this note, the Chamber is calling on the

Government to allocate funds that would be used to maintain the facility.

The Chamber told reporters that managing the

beach is a challenge for the 52/74 Neighburhood Democratic Council (NDC).

Public Relations Officer of the Chamber, Adrian Anamayah, has said the NDC does not have the resources that are needed to adequately maintain the beach as a tourist attraction in Berbice. He has since expressed appreciation that the Government has acknowledged the importance of establishing a permanent management committee to overlook the venue.

In recent times, there

has been growing interest in the Beach. In fact, First Lady Arya Ali, in September 2021, visited ongoing work on a children’s play park. The project is an initiative of hers, and should cover 300 feet x 300 square feet. The park, when completed, would be equipped with swings and other amenities that children can use, together with washroom facilities.

The Number 63 Beach is hype on Easter weekends, with thousands of persons from the coast visiting to fly kites and spend time with

their families. In the last two years, the beach was closed on Easter weekends.

It is the most popular beach in Guyana, but the high cost to maintain the facility is worrisome.

Anamayah says funds to maintain the beach must be a line item in the budget.

According to him, it is very difficult for any committee to generate the income needed to adequately maintain the beach. There is no income from those who use the beach, and it is very expensive to clean up after they would have left.

Investment in the region

President Ali said that the Government has spent a historic amount of money in the region, including $197 million in COVID-19 cash grants, which benefited more than 7800 households; $604 million

in increase in old-age pension for the 1800 recipients, and $235 million in public assistance for 1400 residents.

The President stated that the Government has also invested in training 237 persons, 70 per cent of whom were women. Of the lot, more than 60 were given grants to start their own businesses.

Additionally, to ensure that children have equal access to

education, he noted, over $50 million has been expended on textbooks for more than 7400 children in 65 schools around the region.

Committed to meeting demands

Meanwhile, residents took the opportunity to register their concerns and made suggestions. One suggestion made was for the development of a poultry farm in the communi-

ty. On this note, the President pointed out that if, collectively, the residents are serious about the initiative and would help build the facility, it could be stocked with 400 chicks within two weeks.

Key among the concerns raised was the lack of teachers and teaching assistants in the communities. To remedy this, the President has said that within a month, qualified

persons would be registered for the teaching programme, to increase the pool in primary schools. In addition to this, five qualified persons would be employed as teaching assistants in the coming weeks.

President Ali has also committed to ensuring that a freezer with solar power supplies would soon be provided to the community.

overnment initiatives such as the farmers’ market and other interventions which have been rolled out over the past few months are

having a marked effect on food prices, which had ballooned in recent times.

This is according to Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha in an in-

terview with Guyana Times.

He explained that reductions in the prices of various commodities on the market can be traced back to these interventions, which have both boosted production and made it easier for farmers to get their produce sold.

“What we have seen is that, over time, we’ve seen the prices for fruits and vegetables have started to decrease. One factor was the farmers’ market. Another factor was the ramping up of production over the last few months since the floods.

We have distributed a number of seeds, different varieties of seeds and plants.

Now we are seeing the effects. We are getting more production, and the prices for these products has dropped drastically,” the Minister has said.

“What we have also done is that some of the farmers have built capacity, where they themselves are coming out to get market for their produce. Because these farmers’ markets have been able to develop linkages with the farmers and other market vendors…now they are coming out selling by themselves, rather than selling to the middlemen.”

According to Mustapha, the impacts of his Ministry’s policies include increased markets for farmers’ produce, lower costs for consumers, and more production coming on stream.

Mustapha has vowed that the MoA would continue to hold these farmers’ markets, with the next one scheduled for April 24 in Leonora (Region Three).

“I’m hoping that we can go to Region Two shortly, and Region Ten. At the end of that, I am hoping that each region will have at least once monthly, a farmers’ market. Some might have it more, because people are calling for it on a regular basis,” he explained.

“We’re looking at capacity. There are a number of farmers who now, as I said, are increasing production, and they want these farmers’ markets to be regular.

And also, consumers have been asking for, agitating for, more of these markets countrywide,” Minister Mustapha has said.

Food prices have, in recent times, been steadily rising due to the rapid increase in oil prices on the world market, the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government’s farmers’ market initiatives have generally been well received.

In March of this year,

hundreds of shoppers had turned out to the farmers’ market at Albion in Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne). That farmers’ market was dubbed a huge success, and many consumers had utilised the opportunity to capitalise on the reduced prices.

Most of the vegetables offered at these farmers’ marketa are being sold cheaper than market prices in the region. A comparative analysis had shown that at one market in the region, ochro was being retailed at $160 per pound, while at the farmers’ market, it was $100 per pound. At that same market, ten strings of bora were being sold for $100, while, at the farmers’ market, about 50 were being sold for $200.

Eggplants were, meanwhile, being retailed at three and four for $100, compared with three for $200 at another market in the region on Friday. Tomatoes were $100 per pound at the farmers’ market, but the price was doubled elsewhere in the region. Plantains, which were being retailed on Friday $260 per pound, were being sold for between $160 and $180 per pound, and on the bunch it was $100 per pound at Albion.

The first of the Government-sponsored Farmers’ Market Day initiatives was held in February at the Lusignan Market tarmac, during which prices were reduced between 50 per cent and 25 per cent.

Among the items sold at the Lusignan tarmac were plantains, cassava, sweet potatoes, and meats like beef, pork, chicken and duck.

There was also porridge mix, plantain and banana flour, and an array of fruits and vegetables.

Unidentified man drowns while crossing creek on piece of log

he Guyana Police Force (GPF) is soliciting the public’s assistance to identify a male who reportedly drowned on Friday at Obanna, Kurubrong, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

Divisional Police Commander Senior Superintendent Michael Kingston relation that the only information at the disposal of the Police is that the man was from Berbice. He is nevertheless trying to ascertain the man’s identity, and more so trying to make contact with the man’s family. Kingston has said the deceased is so far identified only as 'Tarzan'.

About two weeks ago, the body of 69-year-old Pitamber Sharma of Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD) was pulled from the Mazaruni River. Initially, it was suspected that he might have drowned, but a post mortem showed that he had been strangled to death.

He was a truck driver attached to BK International Quarries. Several days later, his colleague, 49-year-old

Michael Sooklall, confessed to killing the man and was charged with the crime.

Sooklall told detectives that he and Sharma had had a misunderstanding after Sharma had accused him of not taking care of the mandir as the caretaker. Sharma had then threatened to re-

port the issue to the boss in order to have Sooklalll replaced.

This reportedly angered Sooklall, and he retaliated by choking Sharma until he became lifeless. After committing the act, he dragged the body and threw it into the Mazaruni River.

$1M fine, 6 months’ jail proposed for caregivers who abandon mentally-ill persons – abusers will also be harshly punished

n Guyana, the mentally-ill can be seen wandering around and sleeping on sidewalks. To all intents and purposes, these persons appear to have been abandoned by their relatives and caregivers.

However, the new Mental Health Protection and Promotion Bill 2022, Bill No. 7 of 2022, seeks to address this neglect with hefty fines and jail time for those who abandon their mentally-ill relatives or anyone in their care.

The bill was presented by Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony during the 46th sitting of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The various offences and penalties on summary conviction are laid out under Part VIII of the bill. It is also explained that ignorance is no excuse… that is, those accused of offences under the law cannot claim to have been unaware that the person was suffering from a mental illness.

Section 61 of the bill states, “any person who commits any act of cruelty to, abuse or willful neglect of, any person with a mental illness commits an offence, and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding one million dollars, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months”.

Section 62 goes further in describing what abandon-

ment constitutes. It states that “any person, who intentionally abandons a person with mental illness that is in their custody, care or protection commits an offence, and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of one million dollars, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months”.

Other offences include interfering or obstructing any person carrying out their duties under the Act, or making a false or misleading statement in any application submitted under the Act. These two offences attract, on summary conviction, a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months.

Rather than abandon their relatives or those in their care, caregivers are instead encouraged, in section 41 of the bill, to request the nearest health facility to send someone to assess the patient at home…if the pa-

tient is unwilling to go to the facility, and if, in the caregiver’s opinion, the mental illness is too severe to be cared for at home.

Section 41 (2) states: “Where a request is received under subsection (1), a medical practitioner shall visit the person with a mental illness and make an assessment. (3) Where the medical practitioner, on assessment of the person, is of the opinion that the person has a mental illness and is neglecting himself or herself to an extent that puts the person’s life or the safety of others at risk, the medical practitioner may request a Police officer for assistance in moving the person to the nearest mental health facility.”

The Mental Health Bill, when passed, would effectively replace the Mental Hospital Ordinance Cap.140.

According to Minister Anthony, when he was presenting it, the

bill would “provide mental health care and treatment for persons with mental illness; and protect, promote, and fulfill the human rights of those persons during the delivery of mental health care”.

The Minister had further revealed that the bill would provide for the setting-up of a Mental Health Board, while repealing the Mental Hospital Ordinance.

A perusal of the bill shows that this Board, whose non-ex-officio members would hold office for three years and a maximum of three terms, would have a plethora of responsibilities.

Those responsibilities include advising and assisting the Minister in the areas of mental health, and promoting best practices when it comes to mental health care.

They would also be tasked with inspecting all mental health-related facilities

with a view to making sure these facilities comply with the Act. Clause 52 of the bill states that the board also has to “receive and investigate complaints on any mat-

ter connected with mental health care and treatment, (and) undergo a periodic review at least once every six months of all persons receiving mental health care in a mental health facility”.

NA man challenging 13-year sentence for attempted murder H

ansel Andre Lewis, also called ‘Smiley’, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam Berbice, who was found guilty of attempted murder over the New Year’s Day 2013 stabbing of Chris Burrowes, called ‘Bully’, has filed an appeal against his 13year prison sentence at the Guyana Court of Appeal.

In July 2016, Lewis, 43, was unanimously found guilty of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Burrowes with intent to murder him. The court was told that Lewis had slashed Burrowes to the throat while outside a bar on New Year’s Day of 2018.

Burrowes had told the court that he had known Lewis for several years. He had also said that, on the day in question, he was in the vicinity of the Rainbow Bar on Republic Road and Charles Place in New Amsterdam when Lewis stood next to him smoking something that smelt unpleasant.

He said he asked him to move, and moments after, Lewis attacked him with a knife and fled.

The injured Burrowes was transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and was discharged some 18 days later. The doctor had explained that the injury resulted in temporary disability and a permanent scar.

Throughout the trial, Lewis had maintained that he was wrongfully accused of the crime. In his testimony, Lewis had told the jury that he and Burrowes were

at a bar consuming alcohol when an argument ensued between them, after which they both went their separate ways. He even testified that he could not recall any physical altercation between them.

In a probation report, it was disclosed that Lewis had “felt bad” about the incident, even though he had maintained his innocence. The report disclosed that he had migrated to the United States in 1990.

However, after coming into conflict with the law, he was deported to Guyana in 2002.

A report from the National Psychiatric Hospital in Berbice revealed that Lewis was admitted to the institution in 2008 for drug abuse.

Investigations conducted in his neighbourhood revealed that he was known for his alcoholic tendencies, and had caused disturbances in the community.

A medical doctor had testified that Burrowes suffered a wound measuring seven centimetres in length, with a depth of six centimetres.

s Guyanese from all walks of life celebrate the holiday weekend, President Dr Irfaan Ali has said the exuberant occasion of Easter radiates hope and happiness.

In his Easter message, the Head of State extended blissful greetings to all Guyanese.

“For Christians, Easter radiates hope and happiness. Christians believe that Christ was crucified, died, and was buried, but that He rose from the dead. Christ’s Resurrection goes to the very core of Christianity, and it is therefore central to the Christian faith. It is a time when they gather to reflect on the life and guiding principles of Jesus Christ.”

According to the President, this guidance is found in the church. He believes that the church plays an integral part

in any society.

“In the development of any society, the church is a solid foundation on which important principles rest. Principles of justice, peace, tolerance, patience, obedience, faith, and hope all rest on the foundation of the church, and it is the church that must demonstrate the strength of this foundation.”

President Ali has said that at this special time, when Christians rejoice in the Risen Christ, the message of Easter continues to bring hope and warmth to our hearts. He said the Easter message reminds people that although life has its ups and downs, hope is never extinguished, and life’s joys always return.

“Life’s joys are meant to be shared… Worthy of note is that the Easter weekend activities celebrate our oneness.

The joy of Easter is to be found in families coming together, in the company of friends, and in the smiles and happy faces of Guyanese. Easter brings us together, and it brings out the best in all of us,” he said.

Further, he said Easter is a jubilant period in Guyana, adding that it is also a special time for families and friends to engage in kite-flying, outdoor picnics and family get-togethers. The Bartica Regatta and the Rupununi Rodeo all form part of traditional observances and a fun-filled Easter weekend.

Dr Ali reminded that, over the past two years, Easter activities were severely curtailed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he noted this year’s Easter finds Guyana and its people in better shape.

“Normalcy and recov-

ery are slowly returning. The pews of our churches will be filled this year; families will gather together, kites will once again take to the skies, and Guyanese will return to the open areas for their traditional Easter fun-filled activities,” he predicted.

However, the President has said that amidst all the happiness that Easter brings, persons are reminded to be careful and responsible in all that they do.

“Let us also be mindful of our brothers and sisters, especially those who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. Let us be the shoulder upon which they can rest their cares; the arms that embrace them in love; the hand that reaches out to support them; and the smile that reminds all that life’s joys and gifts are always meant to be shared! Palm Sunday reminds us of Jesus’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Good Friday reminds us of his brutal treatment culminating in crucifixion. Easter Sunday reminds us of Jesus rising from the dead. Each of the Christian gospels explains the purpose for which Jesus came into the world.

In John 3:16, Jesus himself tells of God’s love and concern for mankind. Not only does God say He loves us but He has demonstrated that love by sending Jesus with the express purpose of sacrificing His

life so that mankind might be redeemed.

It is the Christian’s belief that the blood of Christ shed on a cross at a place called Calvary is the full price for man’s redemption. Christians also believe that beyond the suffering and the horrors of crucifixion, they can still rejoice in the glory of his resurrection and his triumph over the grave.

May this glorious season, therefore, remind us all of God’s love for us, of Jesus’s sacrifice, and our responsibility to love and show sincere concern for our fellow humankind.

Happy Easter and God bless our nation.

e are well aware that Easter has a special place in the faith of Christianity, and we are fully cognisant of the fact that it is a period observed with reverence and prayers. The observance of Easter goes back a long way in our country and its national recognition calls attention to the diverse religious faiths which make up the spiritual fabric of our society.

Religious faiths and their meaningful and moral underpinnings have and continue to have an influencing role in our lives, offering guidance and helping so many to avoid or endure the pitfalls one finds in life’s journey.

Over the

years, Easter is widely associated with kite-flying, an activity that is popular and engaged in

by Guyanese of all faiths.

This national celebration can be considered as yet another activity that goes to strengthen national unity along the way of consolidating our nationhood.

On this occasion, the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) is pleased to send special wishes to that substantial portion of its membership who are Christians. Many of them will have to face up, together with their colleague workers, to the reality that Easter this year will be observed but not without concerns over the loss of jobs or the threat to em-

ployment that hangs over their heads. Moreover, their plight today is worsened by various economic pressures, tax burdens, and erosion of standards that are also part of today’s reality.

One of the abiding messages associated with Easter is that of hope.

In our challenging times, that message strengthens the resolve of workers and those suffering from burdens that their struggles and sacrifices for betterment will win out. Let the Easter period keep our hopes alive and undaunted by the adversities in our steady march to a satisfying future.

razil’s Justice Ministry said on Sunday that Federal Police had captured the number two leader of the First Capital Command (PCC), the country’s most powerful prison gang and a

major exporter of cocaine.

Valdeci Alves dos Santos, known as “Colorido”, was captured on Saturday in the north-eastern town of Salgueiro, the Justice Ministry said. It said he had been on the run since 2014

and was on its list of most wanted criminals. He is one of the main suppliers of drugs to Brazil’s southeast, the Ministry said.

Born in the prisons of Sao Paulo state, the PCC has become one of the most powerful criminal organisations in the Americas, responsible for moving drugs from South American producer nations to supply consumer markets in Brazil and Europe.

Much of the top leadership has been in prison for years; “Colorido” was the gang’s number two among those still living in liberty, the Ministry said.

In 2020, PCC trafficker Gilberto Aparecido dos Santos, aka “Fuminho”, was captured in Mozambique, in a sign of the gang’s growing international footprint.

He had been on the run for more than 20 years until his capture in Maputo. (Reuters)

Mexican lawmakers to vote on President’s contentious electricity overhaul

exican lawmakers were set on Sunday to vote on a constitutional overhaul of the electricity sector championed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who wants to increase state control of the electricity market at the expense of private operators.

The leftist leader has sought to concentrate more power in the hands of the state and touts the legislation as vital to his plans to “transform” Mexico. The United States, Mexico’s biggest trading partner, has criticised the reforms.

parties has also ruled out supporting the legislation, meaning the Government looks likely to fall short of the two-thirds majority required for approval.

But Lopez Obrador, seeking to leverage his victory in last weekend’s referendum on his leadership, has vowed to plough ahead and suggested those who oppose his signature legislation are “traitors”.

The President argues that past Governments rigged the market in favour of private interests, and said the reform would improve Mexican independence from foreign-owned

producers.

Lopez Obrador has pitched the overhaul as needed to keep a lid on energy prices by giving Stateowned electricity company Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) more control over the power market. CFE plants, whose prices are under Government control, would get to sell their electricity before other generators.

The President’s overhaul would move energy regulation from independent bodies to state regulators, rolling back previous constitutional changes.

St Kitts-Nevis PM given Wednesday deadline to resolve issues facing coalition Government

rime Minister Dr Timothy Harris has been given a deadline to resolve the issues facing the coalition Team Unity Government or dissolve Parliament and pave the way for fresh general elections as the rift within the Administration widens.

Nevis Premier and leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), Mark Brantley in a television broadcast on Saturday night, said that Harris had done nothing to resolve the issues in the public domain regarding the government.

The coalition Government comprises Harris’s People’s Labour Party (PLP), the People’s Action Movement (PAM) and Brantley’s CCM. In his broadcast, Brantley said that he and PAM leader and Deputy Prime Minister Shawn

Richards had sent a joint letter to Harris giving him the Wednesday deadline and insisting that the co-

alition would not be used for the personal ambition of any one individual.

“We have taken the unprecedented step of putting a deadline of Wednesday April 20, 2022 for a response from the Prime Minister, bearing which we can only conclude that he and his team have no interest or desire to save this Team Unity Government.

We shall therefore know by Wednesday whether we can achieve resolution or whether we face dissolution,” Brantley told the nation.

BVI to relax mask mandates and quarantine

ritish Virgin Islands (BVI) Health Minister Carvin Malone says the Government of the British Overseas territory will be making several amendments to the current COVID-19 regulations in the territory including the removal of the mask mandate in outdoor public spaces.

Speaking last week, Malone announced that the gathering limit of one person per nine square feet was no longer required and masks were no longer legally required to be worn outdoors in open spaces.

“Persons can continue to

choose to do so for their own personal protection. Masks will only be required for indoor public spaces when within the three feet of persons not a part of your household or personal bubble,” the Health Minister said.

“Businesses can require masks in their own spaces for their own safety if they desire. Requirements for businesses to have hand hygiene readily available will continue. Persons who may have been exposed to cases of COVID-19 are not required to quarantine, but are encouraged to wear a mask and avoid contact with vulnerable

persons and seek to get tested for COVID-19 within the next 5-7 days,” Malone added.

He also announced that the government will be removing all quarantine requirements for passengers arriving in the territory.

The Health Minister also said a partially vaccinated or an unvaccinated visitor will present a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test within five days of arrival and a rapid test antigen test will be done once they arrive.

Malone said if the test returned negative then that person was free to roam the territory. (Excerpt from CMC)

Trinidad and Tobago-US ties remain strong – Minister

iplomatic ties between Trinidad and Tobago and the US remain strong.

This was underscored by the Foreign and Caricom Affairs Minister Dr Amery Browne during a tour of the US naval vessel Burlington when it docked in Port of Spain on April 14.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry said the Burlington was in T&T to conduct military exercises with the Defence Force and was a “further example of the commitment of both countries to enhance cooperation”.

The Burlington is a Spearhead-class fast transport vessel that is currently operating under the authority of Commander of Fourth Fleet, the Naval Commander of US Southern Command’s (Southcom) naval forces.

210,000 migrants arrested at Mexico border in March, rivalling record

S border authorities arrested 210,000 migrants attempting to cross the border with Mexico in March, the highest monthly total in two decades and underscoring challenges in the coming months for US President Joe Biden.

The March total is a 24 per cent increase from the same month a year earlier, when 169,000 migrants were picked up at the border, the start of a rise in migration that left thousands unaccompanied children stuck in crowded border patrol stations for days while they awaited placement in overwhelmed Government-

run shelters.

Biden, a Democrat who took office in January 2021, pledged to reverse many of the hardline immigration policies of his Republican predecessor, former President Donald Trump, but has struggled both operationally and politically with high numbers of attempted crossings.

Republicans, who hope to gain control of the US Congress in November 8 midterm elections, say Biden’s rollback of Trumpera policies has encouraged more illegal immigration.

Biden officials have cautioned that migration could

rise further after US health officials said they will end a pandemic-era border order by May 23. The order, known as Title 42, allows asylum seekers and other migrants to be rapidly expelled to Mexico to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While more than half of the migrants encountered at the US-Mexico border in recent months have been from the traditional sending countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, migrants have increasingly been arriving from more far-flung places, including Ukraine and Russia.

Both the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) revised down their demand projections, suggesting that prices finally had some meaningful downward potential. But OPEC stands ready to change track. "Severe new lockdown measures amid surging COVID cases in China have led to a downward revision in our expectations for global oil demand in 2Q22 and for the year as a whole," the IEA wrote in its latest Oil Market Report this week.

The agency also noted that OECD members consumed less oil than previously expected, which led the IEA to revise down its demand outlook for the year by 260,000 barrels per day (bpd) from last month's OMR to a total 99.4 million bpd.

At the same time, the agency cited stable and significant production additions during the first quarter of the year, noting that it was led by non-OPEC producers. Whenever a production increase is led by non-OPEC producers, it's worth watching OPEC even more closely than usual for its response.

This response has yet to come, but the cartel itself is also revising down its outlook for demand for this year. And it is revising it down by a lot more than the IEA. Global oil demand was going to be 480,000 bpd lower than previously expected, OPEC said in the latest edition of its Monthly Oil Market Report. The cartel cited slower economic growth because of the war in Ukraine as one reason for the revision, and COVID-related lockdowns in China as another.

As for supply, the IEA seems to be perfectly calm. After sounding the alarm about the potential loss of 3 million bpd of Russian oil exports because of Western sanctions, the agency now said that the coordinated release of a total 240 million barrels of crude, of which 180 million bpd to be released by the United States, would offset the effect of lost Russian supply. krainian soldiers resisted a Russian ultimatum to lay down arms on Sunday in the pulverised port of Mariupol, which Moscow said its forces had almost completely seized in what would be its biggest prize of the nearly two-month war.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said troops in Mariupol were still fighting despite a Russian demand to surrender by dawn.

"The city still has not fallen," he told ABC's "This Week" programme, adding that Ukrainian soldiers continue to control some parts of the south-eastern Ukrainian city.

Russia said on Saturday it had control of urban areas, with some Ukrainian fighters remaining in the Azovstal steelworks overlooking the Sea of Azov.

Top church cleric criticises UK plan to send migrants to Rwanda

he Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church of England’s highest cleric, has criticised the British Government’s plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda to process their claims for refuge.

In his Easter Day sermon, Justin Welby added his voice to the widespread criticism the scheme has sparked, saying “subcontracting out our responsibilities, even to a country that seeks to do well, like Rwanda, is the opposite of the nature of God who himself took responsibility for our failures”.

Speaking at Canterbury Cathedral in southeast England, Welby said that while “the details are for politics and politicians, the principle must stand the judgement of God — and it cannot”.

Welby said that sending asylum seekers overseas posed “serious ethical questions”.

Such a move “is the opposite of the nature of God”, the church leader said.

On Tuesday, the United Kingdom and Rwanda an-

nounced that they had reached an agreement to send some people who arrive in the UK as stowaways on trucks, or in small boats, to the East African country, where their asylum claims will be processed and, if successful, they will stay.

The deal — for which the UK has paid Rwanda US$158 million — leaves many questions unanswered, including the final cost and how asylum seekers will be chosen. The UK says children, and families with children, will not be sent to Rwanda.

The scheme has sparked outrage and widespread criticism from refugee and human rights organisations, which called the plan inhumane, unworkable and a waste of taxpayers’ money.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) condemned the scheme as an “egregious breach of international law” and “contrary to the letter and spirit of the Refugee Convention”.

hanghai has set a target to stop the spread of COVID-19 outside of quarantined areas by Wednesday, two people familiar with the matter said, which would allow the city to further ease its lockdown and start returning to normal life as public frustrations grow.

The target will require officials to accelerate COVID testing and the transfer of positive cases to quarantine centres, according to a speech by a local Communist Party official dated Saturday, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

Ending community-level transmission has been a turning point for other Chinese localities that locked down, such as Shenzhen city which last month reopened public transport and let businesses go back to work shortly after achieving that target.

Shanghai has become the epicentre of China's largest outbreak since the virus was

first identified in Wuhan in late 2019, and has recorded more than 320,000 COVID infections since early March when its surge began.

Frustrated Shanghai residents have taken to social media to vent their anger at local authorities over difficulties sourcing food, lost income, separated families, and poor conditions at central quarantine centres.

Tensions have on occasion erupted into public protests or scuffles with Police.

The Chinese economy and global supply chains are also feeling pinched by shuttered factories and transport bottlenecks in many parts of China hit by COVID-19 curbs.

In the run-up to the Saturday deadline, the line extended to 80 kilometres (60 miles), with some stuck for up to 33 hours.

The EU has banned lorries from Russia and Belarus – except those carrying medicine, mail or petroleum products –- from entering or staying in the bloc.

The move is part of sanctions over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"There are still many kilometres to drive... so it's unrealistic," it quoted a Belarusian driver on his chances of crossing the border in time.

And hours after the deadline passed, the waiting times had been shortened to 12 hours, says the BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw, with the number of trucks at two border crossings between 230400 vehicles.

However, it is unclear what will happen to thousands of other trucks from the two countries estimated to currently be on EU territory.

3 people injured in riots in Sweden

hree people in the Swedish city of Norrkoping needed medical attention after being hit by Police bullets during clashes between Police and protesters following Quran burnings that caused riots in several Swedish towns over the Easter weekend.

In some places counter-protesters attacked Police ahead of planned right-wing extremist demonstrations.

Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has condemned the violence.

"Three people seem to have been hit by ricochets and are now being cared for in hospital. All three injured are arrested on suspicion of crime," Police said

in an online statement, adding none of the injuries were life-threatening.

Police said the situation in Norrkoping was calm on Sunday evening.

Police and protesters have been engaged in serious clashes during the past days where several Police have been injured and multiple vehicles have been torched.

The violence began on Thursday after a demonstration organised by Rasmus Paludan, leader of Danish far-right political party Hard Line. Paludan, who had permission for a series of demonstrations across Sweden during the Easter weekend, is known for Quran burnings. (Reuters)

Umran Malik’s remarkable bowling figures of 4-28 restricted PBKS to 151 in the first innings, before SRH chased down the target with 7 balls to spare.

Chasing 152, SRH openers Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma got off to a cautious start. SRH skipper Williamson was caught inside the circle for 3 in the third over off Rabada’s bowling.

Tripathi got going quickly, and creamed three fours

Miller, Rashid pull off thriller, as CSK lose again T he Gujarat Titans (GT) held their nerves to win a lastball thriller in the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after defeating the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 3 wickets on Sunday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

A monumental knock from David Miller (94*), supported brilliantly by Rashid Khan’s quickfire 40, got Gujarat Titans across the line in a thrilling lastball finish.

Chasing 170 to win, Gujarat Titans lost three wickets inside the powerplay, and CSK bowlers were on the top of their game.

Shubman Gill was dismissed on the first ball he faced after the right-handed batter was caught at point off Mukesh Choudhary’s bowling.

Maheesh Theekshana scalped the wickets of Vijay Shankar and Abhinav Manohar as GT were 37-3 at the end of powerplay.

Wriddhiman Saha was the next batter to be dismissed, caught at deep square leg. GT were 58-4 at the end of 10 overs, with Rahul Tewatia and David Miller at the crease.

Miller took on the CSK skipper and hammered two sixes and one four as 19 runs were scored in the 12th over.

Dwayne Bravo broke the

Gibbons cops second CARIFTA gold, Harvey adds silver to tally

A

nisha Gibbons stamped her authority in Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday morning when she added a second CARIFTA gold medal to her tally. She was not the only Guyanese on the podium on Sunday, however, as Attoya Harvey followed up her gold medal performance on Saturday with a silver medal in the Girls’ 14-17 3000m event.

In the field events arena, the 18-year-old Gibbons had the following throws: 37.53m, 40.64m, 37.49m, 40.99m and a best throw of 42.54m, which assured her of the gold medal in the Girls’ Under-20 event. Gibbons topped a field of 8 other competitors from around the Caribbean; Barbados’s Vivica Addison finished in second place with a best throw of 41.92m and her compatriot Vanessa Greaves was third, having thrown 41.17m on her best attempt.

locally, is no stranger to the top of the podium, having won Guyana’s first javelin Gold at the 2019 CARIFTA Games in the Cayman Islands. On that occasion, she had competed in the Under-17 category.

Over on the track, Harvey asserted her dominance as a distance athlete when she finished second only to Jamaica’s Samantha Pryce,

who clocked 10:40.07 for the gold. Harvey crossed the line soon after in 10:51.40 for second, while Jamaican Ashara Frater stopped the clock at 11:03.76 for the bronze.

More CARIFTA action on Sunday morning saw Harvey and Narissa McPherson, both of whom have already medaled at the games in other events, qualifying for the Girls’ Under-17 800m fi-

nal with the best qualifying times out of the entire field of competitors.

Racing in different Heats, Harvey won Heat 1 with a time of 2:15.76, while McPherson clocked 2:19.89 to win Heat 2. Andrene Peart, Ricaria Campbell (Jamaica), Michelle Smith (USVI), Ashlyn Simmons (Barbados), Jaeda Grant (Bermuda), and Kayleigh Forde of Trinidad and Tobago will feature in Monday’s final alongside the dominant Guyanese duo.

In other preliminary events in Sunday morning’s session at the CARIFTA Games, Guyana had mixed fortunes in the Boys’ Under-20 200m, with Shamar Horatio clocking 21.83s and finishing fourth in Heat 1. And while he was not an automatic qualifier, the Guyanese had the best time out of the other racers, thus gaining him a spot in Sunday afternoon’s Semifinal.

Ezekiel Newton missed a semifinal berth, after crossing the line fifth in Heat 4 with a time of 22.28s.

Later in the day, Horatio was not as fortunate in the semis, clocking 21.75s for fifth place in Heat 2.

Horatio’s time was not good enough for either automatic qualification or qualification on time.

In the distaff, Karese Lloyd took to the track in Heat 1 of the Girls U20 200m, clocking 25.69s for 7th place in the heat, in which Jamaica’s Kaylia Kelly won in 23.99s.

In Heat 2, however, Keliza Smith, who came close to a 100m bronze on Saturday night, stooped the clock in 24.34s for second place, gaining automatic qualification to the event’s final on Monday evening.

Brianna Lyston of Jamaica won the heat in 23.93s.

The Land of Many Waters also witnessed representation in the Boys’ Under 20 Long Jump, which featured Wesley Tyndall.

Tyndall leaped to 7.11m, 6.86m, 6.94m, 7.04m, 6.61m, and his final jump of 7.12m was his best for the day.

However, Tyndall’s effort

was not good enough for a podium finish.

Jaydon Hibbert of Jamaica jumped 7.62m for Gold, St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Uroy Ryan leaped 7.52m for silver, while Aren Spencer of Barbados leaped 7.48m for the third position.

In the relays, Guyana’s lone relay team - Boys Under-20 4x100, completed their exchanges and crossed the line in 42.79s for sixth place in the event. Jamaica’s team, clocking 39.15s broke the CARIFTA record for the gold medal, while Bahamas (40.41s) and Cayman Islands (40.72s) took the remaining podium positions respectively.

The Guyanese contingent has now copped 5 medals at the games; two gold and three silver. The likes of Smith, Austin, McPherson, Javon Roberts, Adriel Austin, Stafon Roach and Trevon Hamer will be in action for Guyana on the final day of the Games in Kingston, Jamaica, today.

eam Evolution riders dominated yesterday's Singh O Hardware General Store 50-mile race on the West Bank of Demerara.

Curtis Dey stopped the clock in one hour, 42 minutes and 48 seconds in the Open category, while his teammate Christopher Griffith came in second position. Team Kaieteur Attack leader Alex Mendes rode in third, while Paul DeNobrega of Team Evolution came in fourth.

Kemuel Moses and Alexander Leung rode fifth and sixth respectively to complete the Open category.

he Guyana women’s hockey team has suffered its second defeat in as many matches, this time to hosts Bermuda during the CAC qualifiers being contested in Hamilton Bermuda.

Coming after the disappointment of an opening 0-1 loss to Puerto Rico, the Guyanese ladies played much better against hosts Bermuda, and it was also their third time on the artificial pitch on which international hockey is played.

The Guyana ladies looked the better side from the outset, and created several early chances, which was a quite different circumstance from their previous start against Puerto Rico. The inexperience of the side however showed, as despite their many scoring opportunities, they were unable to convert them to goals.

The game remained scoreless for three of the four quarters of the match,

with Guyana having twice as many scoring circle entries in the match to Bermuda and one more penalty corner. Guyana pressed hard as the match wound down, seemingly headed for a stalemate. It was during a well-constructed attack in the very final minute of the match that saw Guyana penetrate the Bermudan circle, only to have the ball stripped at the last minute.

The resulting counterattack by Bermuda caught most of the Guyanese in their attacking half, and the Bermudian centre forward was gifted a golden opportunity of a one v one against Guyanese goalkeeper Alysa Xavier.

Xavier advanced and made a strong effort to block the shot, but striker Mallory Towlson managed to fake right and roll the ball between the shuffling legs of Xavier for the goal, which sent the Bermudian crowd into a frenzy.

Guyana still had time to

launch one more attack, but the skilful Aliyah Gordon’s final entry pass into the circle was blocked just seconds before the final whistle.

This second loss means the Guyanese will finish out of the CAC qualifying spots as they face Jamaica in their final match on Sunday.

Head Coach Philip Fernandes expressed his disappointment in saying that while he was pleased with the way his team performed despite the overwhelming odds of not being able to train on a proper surface, their inexperience and a bit of unfortunate luck turned matches that could have been won, especially against Bermuda, into narrow losses.

Guyana fielded the youngest team with six teenagers, all of whom were playing their first international tournament.

Arjune Sukhai (second) and Sherwin Sampson (third). In the Veterans Under-50 category, Mendes emerged as victor, followed by Berbician Junior Niles and Walter Grant-Stuart.

Talim Shaw was the top Over-50 rider, followed

by Ian Jackson and Lui Perreira.

Linden's Clevicia Spencer won the female category, while Berbician Marica Dick finished second. Thirty-two starters took centre stage, and six sprint prizes were up for grabs during the race.

DeNobrega won three sprint prizes, while Shaw, Ammal Gibbs and Leung had one

each.

fter a two-year absence of horse racing owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of horse-racing enthusiasts, including Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh and Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha graced the Port Mourant Turf Club with their presence to witness Santa Cruz Lady beat Goodwill Boy and Golden Dancer in the feature event.

uyana and West Indies player Gudakesh Motie showed his class with the bat as Albion defeated Skeldon by 247 runs in the Tenelec Inc First Division tournament.

In the match played at the historic Albion, the home team opted to bat first and posted 322-9 in 50 overs with Motie slamming an unbeaten 80 while Anthony Bramble and Jonathan Foo made contrasting fifties. With the ball, former national Under-19 player

Kelvin Umroa had 5-16 (including a hat-trick) to bowl Skeldon out for 75 in 19 overs.

Under brilliant sunshine, on a smooth outfield, the star-studded Albion side, led by Test spinner Veerasammy Permaul, won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Kandasammy Surujnarine (05) and Adrian Sukwah (02) went cheaply, both removed by Aaron Ault. Sharaz Ramcharran was joined by Foo and the duo added 25 runs, with Ramcharran playing some delightful strokes in his 22, which had three fours.

Foo played a watchful innings, but he saw his second partner Rajiv Ivan perish when he caressed a full toss to long-on after scoring 17. Guyana Harpy Eagles wicketkeeper-batsman Bramble then came in and entertained the small gathering at Albion. Bramble reached his fifty before Foo. His powerful knock of 64 was decorated with five fours and two huge sixes.

After Bramble and Foo added 114 runs together, Foo then continued his watchful innings. He scored 58, which included three fours, and like Bramble, looked

Batting at number seven, Motie displayed brisk running between the wickets and he showed his power and skill with the bat.

His undefeated 80 was laced with four towering sixes and five spanking fours. He dominated the 40run eight-wicket stand with Permaul, who made 29, before he chopped on. Motie's innings propelled Albion to 322-9 when 50 overs expired. The home team added 100 runs in the last 10 overs.

Bowling for Skeldon, steady seamer Wayne Garnett had 2-22 in 10 overs while Ault had 2-33 in five overs and Asseer Hussain had 2-79 in 10 overs. In response, Skeldon had no answer for the left-arm spin of Umroa. Opener Tristan Ramdass top-scored with 20 while Junior King (13) and Ault (11*) reached double figures.

After the 28-run opening stand, wickets tumbled like dominoes. Three wickets fell with the score on 35 and four wickets fell with the score on 39. Umroa, who ex-

tracted turn and bounce at a consistent line and length, bowled two maidens in six overs and claimed 5-16.

He was supported by pacer Demetri Cameron, who bagged 2-23 in six overs, and Bramble, who is known for wearing the gloves, had a bowl and ended with 1-18 in three overs. Former Test player Devendra Bishoo finished the innings off with a wicket-maiden, his only over of the match, while Permaul and Motie did not bowl a single over.
