Guyana pegged among key non-OPEC oil suppliers – with additional 220,000 bpd starting 2022

W

ith Guyana expecting to produce an additional 220,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) when Phase Two of the Liza Development comes on stream next year, the country has been listed among the key drivers of the 2022 oil supply growth.

This is according to the latest edition of the Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The OPEC MOMR stated that the 2021 non-OPEC liquid supply is expected to grow by 0.7 mb/d (million barrels per day), unchanged from last month’s assessment, to average 63.6 mb/d. Already, Guyana has been named among the main drivers of the 2021 supply growth – coming behind top producers around the world.

“The 2021 oil supply forecast primarily sees growth in Canada, Russia, China, Norway, Brazil, Guyana, and Qatar, while output is projected to decline in the UK, Colombia, Indonesia and Egypt,” MOMR detailed.

However, the OPEC report further outlined that Guyana would continue to be among the key drivers of nonOPEC supply growth in 2022.

“Russia and the US are expected to be the main drivers of next year’s growth, contributing increments of 1.0 mb/d and 0.9 mb/d respectively, followed by Brazil, Canada, Kazakhstan, Norway, Guyana and other countries in the DoC… while oil production is projected to decline mainly in Indonesia, Egypt and Thailand,” the MOMR stated.

According to the OPEC MOMR, global oil demand growth for 2021 has been revised lower by around 0.16 mb/d to stand now at 5.7 mb/d. This revision mainly accounted for slower than anticipated demand from China and India in the third quarter of this year. World oil demand is now estimated to reach 96.4 mb/d in 2021.

Nevertheless, the organization revealed that growth in global oil demand remains unchanged for 2022, standing at 4.2 mb/d. World total demand in 2022 is now estimated to reach 100.6 mb/d, around 0.5 mb/d above 2019 levels.

These forecasts come on the heels of United States oil giant ExxonMobil preparing for Phase 2 of its Liza Development Project in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana. The oil major started production in December 2019 at the Liza Phase 1 Development.

Back in May 2019, Exxon was granted approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to go ahead with its Liza Phase 2 Development offshore Guyana. The oil company had said that the project would have the capacity to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day. Exxon had also revealed that the Liza Phase 2 development was funded at the cost of some US$6 billion, including a lease capitalisation cost of approximately $1.6 billion for the Liza Unity Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) ves-

sel which arrived in Guyana’s waters in October, after travelling for approximately 53 days and in excess of 11,000 nautical miles on its journey from Singapore.

For the Phase 2 Development, six drill centres were planned, along with approximately 30 wells – 15 production, nine water injection, and six gas injection wells.

The US$9 billion Payara development, the third development, will meanwhile target an estimated resource base of about 600 million oil-equivalent barrels, and was at one point considered to be the largest single planned investment in the history of Guyana.

The Yellowtail development, which will be oil giant ExxonMobil’s fourth development in Guyana’s waters, will turn out to be the single

largest development so far in terms of barrels per day (bpd) of oil, with a mammoth 250,000 bpd targeted.

In all, six ExxonMobiloperated Guyana producing projects are predicted by 2027, with plans for an eventual 10 in total.

The Stabroek Block is 6.6 million acres (26,800 square kilometres).

ExxonMobil’s affiliate, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited, is operator and holds 45 per cent interest in the Stabroek Block. Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd holds 30 per cent interest, and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNOOC Limited, holds 25 per cent interest.

To date, the US oil major has lifted some 7,056,262 barrels of oil to the tune of US$436 million, which is be-

ing kept in an account at the New York Federal Reserve Bank, earning interest for Guyana.

It is projected that oil revenues would triple when the Liza Unity FPSO begins production at the Liza Phase 2 next year.

Only recently, Guyanese Economist Winston Brassington, who once headed the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL), said the growth of the country’s oil and gas sector would be parallel to the growth in local banking assets.

“We know that we’re growing very fast in this decade, because of oil and gas… Some speak of a fivefold increase in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) by the end of the decade. If we see that, then our bank assets will grow from end of last year of $168 billion to over 3 trillion GYD. And that’s using a compound annual growth rate of 17 per cent,” Brassington said during a webinar hosted by the American Chamber (AmCham Guyana).

According to Brassington, who these days heads the gasto-shore task force, the growth in banking assets would result in banks having more leeway to pass on the benefits to consumers. As it is right now, the economist noted, there is room for improvement when it comes to lending rates.

Local parks and zoo

I

n 2019, the then Department of the Environment, through the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) and the National Parks Commission (NPC), announced a number of initiatives aimed at enhancing the facilities at the National Park so that citizens can enjoy a safe, clean and relaxing environment.

This was at the time indeed good news, as, for quite some time, the park, known to provide much attraction for families and overseas visitors, had been deteriorating at a rapid rate.

Guyanese who have travelled abroad could testify to the differences in standards with our local parks and zoo and what obtains in other countries. COVID-19 suddenly hit, and these facilities were closed for a substantial period of time, before a scheduled reopening of the National Park only was allowed.

But even before COVID-19 and the imposed closure of the Botanical Gardens, persons were not that excited to visit the zoo and the parks because of several reasons: they fear they may get robbed, as vagrants and other idlers are seen hanging around; the environment is untidy and smells; and generally, there is hardly anything new and interesting to see, especially as it relates to the zoo.

For example, the cages at the zoo were occupied by a few birds; exotic cats, including the jaguar; and about two other animals. Huge snakes, caimans, turtles and monkeys were among the few animals that could be seen in the dull and smelly environment. And over at the petting zoo within the park, there were a few donkeys, turtles and goats; again, nothing that would cause persons to want to return, or encourage their family and friends to visit.

In fact, for years, visitors were complaining of the state of the facility. Some even openly expressed that they regretted paying their monies to enter the facility. Additionally, worry had been expressed over the condition of the animals, specifically the exotic cats. Concerns were also raised about the limited space the animals are usually confined to, especially since, in their natural habitat, they would be allowed to run about and climb and jump.

This is quite unfortunate, as Guyana has so much to offer, not only for locals, but for the entire world to see, especially as it relates to our rich biodiversity. This alone could be a major attraction for visitors when they come to these shores, hence strenuous efforts should be made to ensure that such facilities, more so the zoo – when reopened - are constantly improved and upgraded in keeping with international best practices.

It could be recalled that the PAC had started working with the National Parks Commission in 2012 to enhance the facilities at the Park. Under the Three Parks Initiative, the National Park had benefited from many improvements, but efforts to upkeep the standards were minimal, resulting in standards falling drastically over the past years.

The PAC had also engaged advertisers and other stakeholders who are responsible for advertisements, buildings and facilities in the Park, to encourage them to enhance same. Stakeholders who had sponsored walking trails and other infrastructure were also re-engaged, but we are not certain as to the success of these engagements regarding funding etc to maintain the facilities.

There is need for the zoo to be transformed from just a holding facility for animals into an information education delivery facility. There is need for other features, such as different zoning areas, including a Coastal Wetland Zone, a Savannah Zone, and a Mountain and Forest Zone, along with other amenities, such as information booths etc.

Most of us would agree that wholesome entertainment for families is lacking to a large extent in Guyana. On weekends especially, families look forward to taking their children to places that are interesting; where they can also enjoy a bit of relaxation and fun. The Zoological Park, National Park and Botanical Gardens are ideal places where this could be provided.

While the Government may take the lead in such initiatives, the Private Sector also has a corporate social responsibility which it must fulfill to the citizenry. The Private Sector must therefore show by its actions that it is serious about working with the Government in enhancing this aspect of national life.

Continuous sidewalks are a good fit for us Dear Editor, I do not believe that we, as a society, are on the same page, especially when it comes to the use of our roadways. Alfred Bhulai, in a recent letter, pointed out that vehicle owners believe themselves to possess an unassailable right to the space when they are in their own mode of transport.

I myself drive a car when I move around, and I tend to agree that this is the attitude of many who drive. I have taken the bus for most of my commuting life, and as it is said in Guyana, I know how to handle the ‘rockings’.

Walking along inhospitable passages to get to transit stops; navigating chaotic walkways and obstacles; having to contort your body to get in and out of minibuses, are things that are not ideal. As a driver, I observe a certain respect for people walking, and when I think about urban planning, I consider the truth, that not everyone has to own a car.

I have noticed there is a sentiment in Georgetown that the destiny of all working people is that they must one day drive. I belligerently disagree with this imbalanced, elitist and materialistic sentiment by saying that that nar-

row view is an emanation of psychology that I believe keeps us unappreciative, without understanding, and dare I say even poor.

Editor, I do notice better sentiments coming from the more integrated among us: that there must be an optimal walkability programmed into our city designs. Imagine being able to walk to work, to school, and to play all in the same trip. This is possible for us, we have access to all of the world’s knowledge on the integrated subject of urban design. We can get so many things right with our expanding spaces, applying effective spatial design principles like road hierarchy (for controlling access to property) while we devise our own way toward becoming a super-powered cost-of-living paradise.

Using roadways in tight, close-knit inner cities like Georgetown is not so much about order and discipline as it is about interactivity and respect for different classes of road users. So, what if somebody is on a bicycle? Are they in your way? Really?

Slow yourself down and share the roadway, and I say this even after a few bicycle men tried to throw their front wheels into the path of my slowly passing car to get some dineros out

of me – yes, this happens. I sometimes drive with empty pockets, by the way, so don’t overthink it, bicycle boys!

Editor, that our officers have to be out on the streets for so many hours in a day, overriding the traffic lights to manage traffic, seems extenuating. It is becoming clearer to us that there is a growing need for design solutions toward a more reliable infrastructural pattern for the city. That said, I would like for a chance to shoot another suggestion, as I have in previous letters, about an innovation that I believe can enhance the charm and functionality of inner-city streets: the continuous sidewalk.

The continuous sidewalk would force impatient drivers to interact with other road users, as it provides that well timed ‘interrupt’ that we need to keep our own pace in check, slowing us down, causing us to interactively share the space with people on foot, people who can now navigate with more confidence that they are safe. I also wonder what this might do for our moods.

Editor, in roundabouts;

in the emphasis on designated bus stops; in the repositioning of the main fire station alongside Homestretch; in the inclusion of cycle lanes in road programming, and in the use of changing medians, I see signs of a brighter future for the city. It is beginning to step the ladder its way toward optimality. I believe persons would eventually understand that roundabouts reduce the likelihood of human error, and would save on fuel costs by keeping us moving, albeit more carefully.

Learn this, I 1 of 2 say to the skeptics, learn how to INTERACT with the roadways, and stop being scared of the roundabout boogeyman! We need more roundabouts, not less. Consider the uncertainty you face at the junction even with traffic lights, with your head spinning in all directions before you move.

Human error is an increasing function of the number of steps required to carry out a decision.

Allow me to say: “Let’s just slow it down, and get with the programme of a more careful and functional inner city that respects us as we move about its passages”.

Guyana playing its part to curb climate change with LCDS 2030 T

he adverse and potentially catastrophic impacts of climate change are already being experienced in Guyana, and since the 1960s, Guyana has observed marked increases in temperatures, sea levels and the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events.

As one of many small developing states, Guyana is doing its part to improve and sustain a clean world for all, and the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 is a clear example of how the PPP/C Government intends to protect the biodiversity in Guyana and by extension, the world.

Launched by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, the new and expanded programme, which is still in its draft stages, seeks to create a new-low-carbon economy in Guyana by establishing incentives which value the world’s ecosystem services, and promote these as an essential component of a new model of global development with sustainability at its core.

In Guyana’s case, it is about harnessing the value of the country’s ecosystem services to build a long-term, low-carbon diversification opportunity.

In protecting against climate change, Guyana, along with a number of other countries, gave its full support at the recently concluded United Nations 26th Conference of Parties (COP26), held in Glasgow, Scotland. In fact, over 130 leaders, representing more than 90 per cent of the world’s forests, have committed to work together to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation

by 2030 in the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use. Countries have also committed to the funding pledge of US$12 billion between 2021 and 2025 to finance forest-relate matters.

From early 2022, there is a strong possibility that Guyana could access market-based mechanisms for forest climate services that includes private, as well as international public sector financing.

This will enable a pathway to transition from the existing GuyanaNorway partnership and increase the value of sustainable managing Guyana’s forests. The monitoring, verifying and reporting system, built since 2009, will also act as a platform for integration with other ecosystem services markets.

Guyana can also undergo one of the world’s most ambitious energy transitions and grow the economy up to five-fold, while keeping greenhouse gas emissions from energy generation at around 2019 levels. This can be done through the replacement of expensive, polluting heavy fuel oil with natural gas as a bridge to an energy system built mainly from hydropower, solar and wind power.

Alongside the national low-carbon energy transition, targeted investments can be made in the underlying infrastructure of a broader, low-carbon economy to create jobs all over the country and enhance livelihoods. This includes investments to enhance digital connectivity in under-served communities, to improve transportation, improve access to finance, and create micro and small, low-carbon enterprises. Noise nuisance – “silent zone” for UG Road

Dear Editor, I wish to once more bring to the public’s attention the unpleasant occurrence of “noise nuisance” that plagues our country.

Most Guyanese, when travelling or studying at universities overseas, have observed the notification “Silent Zone”. Of course, playing music and entertainment is not allowed.

But here in Guyana, at the University Road, where we have the Cyril Potter Teachers’ Training College, a nursery school, and one block away is the University of Guyana, there are several beer gardens where loud music is played by taxis and other vehicles with the instruments in their trunks, playing for hours, until late at nights and early the next day.

I reported to Mr. Lloyd Alleyne, Chief Engineer, and subsequently to the other engineer and to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor about the breach in the building code of a rum shop at Fifth Street, Cummings

Lodge, from 17 May 2010 and onwards. The entrance of the building is One foot from the road and three feet from my fence, whereas the City’s Building Code requires the building to be erected 8 feet from the road and 7 feet from the fence of the next building. However, nothing ever came out of that complaint.

The rum shop at Fifth Street was closed for over a year because of COVID; this is the most unlawful and loudest rum shop in the entire village of Cummings Lodge. Recently, actions have been undertaken to reopen this rum shop. Of course, the noise will be explosive. I and other residents have made complaints to the Commissioner of Police; Police Professional Authority; the Minister of Home Affairs and all the Police stations in the district; the DPP; and where ever help could be accessed, but the noise never stopped.

What usually happens when the Police answer a complaint and visit the rum

shop, the noise will be toned down for about an hour, and after the Police leave, the music starts again, but this time extremely loud, as if with malice.

My appeal now is to the Government, the Minister of Home Affairs, and the Education Minister, to make U.G. Road and areas

in close proximity to the University of Guyana and the Cyril Potter Teachers Training College a “Silent Zone”, because the Police have failed to enforce the law over the years.

Importantly, the new LCDS programme intends to align its operations with global climate change goals. Guyana will act strategically and responsibly as the sector develops, supporting global energy security while diversifying and decarbonising Guyana’s domestic economy and investing in development priorities for all Guyanese, including health, education and low-carbon opportunities.

At the same time, the government will advocate internationally for a strong global carbon price and the removal of subsidies on fossil fuel – to incentivize the lowest carbon, most cost-effective oil and gas in the global marketplace in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement under which there will be demand for decades to come. In parallel, Guyana will advance a “no flaring” policy, and mandate the use of best technology in the oil and gas sector to limit its environmental impact. (DPI)

This really complicated sounding phrase means that the hole in the balloon widening is what makes it pop, not the fact that air is slowly being let out. When the balloon’s hole gets bigger, it rips and eventually the balloon pops. In this experiment, the tape slows down this process.

T

he Health Ministry on Thursday reported that another three persons who were tested positive for COVID-19 have died, taking the death toll to 983.

An unvaccinated 63-year-old female from Region Three died on April 22, and the Ministry has said its surveillance team did some reconciliation with the data and was able to include this missing death in the list.

The other two persons who died are a 77-year-old fully vaccinated male from Region 10 and a 76-yearold unvaccinated female from Region Six. They both died on November 24 while seeking medical care.

However, new statistics provided by the Ministry have shown that 89 more persons were infected with the life-threatening virus,

moving the figure for those infected to 37,613.

There are 14 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 72 in institutional isolation, 1525 in home isolation, and three in institutional quarantine.

Since the onset of the pandemic, 386,304 individuals have been tested – of which 17,722 males and 19,891 females were detected to have contracted the virus. A total of 35,019 persons have recovered, while active cases stand at 1,611.

A regional breakdown of new cases shows that five were from Region One (Barima-Waini); three from Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam); 14 from Region Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara); 31 from Region Four (DemeraraMahaica); 14 for Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice);

Colombian man who choked Venezuelan female in court remanded

olombian national Alberto Jose was on Thursday remanded to prison for allegedly assaulting a Venezuelan female when he appeared at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.

The Police have said that on the day in question, the accused, while being escorted into the court to answer to the above charge, jumped the prisoner’s dock while being handcuffed and held on to the complainant’s neck, choking her in the presence of the Magistrate.

He was, however, restrained by a constable performing sentry duties, and escorted to the lockups.

Jose has been further remanded to prison until March 30, 2022.

Vaccination statistics on Thursday show 398,281 adults taking the first dose and 273,880 returning for a second dose. As such, 53.4 per cent of this cohort is completely immunised.

Persons over 50 years of age and adults with comorbid conditions can also visit the various vaccination sites if desirous of a booster shot. This can be taken six months after the second dose has been administered, or in the case of the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine, 52 days thereafter.

It has been outlined that a person immunised with Sputnik V can take the Johnson and Johnson vaccine as their booster dose. Meanwhile, those with Pfizer, Johnson and Johnson and Sinopharm are required to take the same vaccines respectively.

Since Moderna booster shots are unavailable, Pfizer doses can work.

For the AstraZenecaimmunised subset, either the same vaccine or Pfizer can be taken.

Meanwhile, 28,930 children between the ages of 12 and 17 have taken their first jab, while 20,112 of those are fully vaccinated with both shots. This raises the second dose uptake for that age cohort to 27.6 per cent.

inance Minister Dr Ashni Singh and European Union (EU) Ambassador to Guyana, His Excellency Dr Fernando Ponz Cantó, met at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre (ACCC) and co-chaired an important Policy Dialogue focused on EU-Guyana Development Cooperation.

The meeting was a successful step towards further cooperation achievements for the benefit of Guyana’s citizens, with discussions focused on the EU’s development cooperation programme with Guyana.

The EU and Guyana have an increasingly close partnership, based on common values, objectives and interests covering all matters of mutual interest.

While addressing the meeting, Minister Singh placed on record the strong appreciation of the Government for the EU’s sustained support to Guyana over the years. He also expressed optimism that the strong relationship that Guyana and the EU enjoy would continue to grow in the years ahead as Guyana traverses this new phase in its economic history.

Ambassador Fernando Ponz Cantó pledged the European Union's continued commitment to the EU-Guyana partnership as Guyana advances its development agenda as a new and emerging oil and gas producer.

The Ambassador recalled the determination and resilience of the Guyanese peo-

ple to preserve democratic norms and the rule of law.

In particular, he commended the Government and the National Authorising Officer (NAO) for re-establishing this bilateral policy dialogue which had been absent during 2020 due to the political crisis and related events, and which is a fundamental element in the full normalisation of cooperation, including budget support.

Further, Minister Singh reaffirmed Government's appreciation for the EU Budget Support Programme.

The two delegations held wide-ranging discussions that focused on the Government's ongoing investment programme in the sea-and-river-defense sector, including mangroves. Both were key areas that underpin EU support over the last decades.

Additionally, Dr Singh and the EU Ambassador held a preliminary discussion on a new technical co-

operation facility valued at €2.73M in which Guyana would benefit from support for the implementation and development of policies to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Possible areas of support include health, livelihood development, biodiversity, forestry, governance, and public financial management.

The EU team comprised Head of Cooperation, Karel Lizerot, and other members of the EU Delegation, while the Ministry of Finance’s team included Deputy National Authorising Officer (DNAO), Tarachand Balgobin.

The EU Delegation in Guyana was established in December 1972, and is responsible for taking forward the EU-Guyana partnership, including political, development and socioeconomic relations, trade, and other major policy areas, based on solid human, cultural and historical links.

…independence in Suriname o signal how deep our colonial legacy remains buried in our psyche, just think that Suriname - just a hop, skip and jump away - celebrated its 46th Independence Day anniversary yesterday, and not a single newspaper carried the news!! Yet, if Prince Harry has a hangnail, it’s front-page news!! Never mind the latest twist on his saga with Megan!!

What’s more incredible is that we also were ruled for most of our history by the Dutch, like Suriname. From 1616 or thereabouts until two hundred years later, they ruled the roost here, and carved out our coastlands from mangrove swamps with enslaved labour. In case you forgot, our National Hero Cuffy was as much Dutch as Akan!! The Brits only stepped in after 1814, and left in 1966. The Dutch, on the other hand, exchanged New York State with the Brits for Suriname, and stayed there ever since. And don’t ask who got the better of the bargain!!

If we think we’re “multi-cultural” - as the “land of six peoples” - then what about Suriname? There they have the Europeans, who’ve maintained a significant presence, unlike with us. There are also the Creoles - descendants of the enslaved Africans, who’re also distinguished by the Mixed group from European-African miscegenation. The latter maintain a distinct identity. Another difference is their Maroons - descendants of enslaved Africans, who escaped into the “bush” and set up six tribal groups!! After the Dutch ended slavery in 1863, they also looked around for “cheap and reliable” labour, and from 1863, brought in Indian Indentured labourers from British India. The Brits weren’t skimpish with their Indian subjects!! For good measure, since they ruled Indonesia (Dutch East Indies), they shipped in Javanese between 1890 and 1939!! Enough diversity for you??

And so we come to their independence, which arrived in 1974, and which was heavily influenced by our ethnic riots that preceded our independence eight years earlier in 1966. As the Dutch prepared to hand over the country to locals, 100,000 of them fled to the Netherlands, fearing our type of ethnic violence. And this was in the face of a conscious acceptance of the European (especially Dutch) positive view of coalition governments as the answer to diverse societies, and a billion-dollar handshake from the Dutch!

To cut a long story short, by 1980, there was the “Sergeants’ Coup” led by Bouterse, who then shot and killed fifteen opposition elements in 1982, and ruled behind the scenes until 1987, when he staged the “Telephone Coup”!

Since then, he formed his own party, which ruled until it was deposed by the present coalition govt led by President Santokhi. He’s been convicted of drug smuggling and the 1982 murders.

Will oil save them? …Barbados becoming Republic Barbados is just a week away from cutting the last apron strings to “Mother England”, when it will become a Republic.

The Bajans will have their own President, rather than a Governor General representing Queen Elizabeth. Under Mia Mottley, Barbados is fast moving away from the myth that it is “Little England”, and that somehow it was spared the ravages of slavery. What most present-day Bajans forget is that, even after the abolition of slavery, wages on the island were so low that over 20,000 of them emigrated to Guyana as indentured labourers!!

Anyhow, we hope that Mia will continue with the decolonisation programme in all areas of national life. As a Queen’s Counsel, will she now change the designation of “silk” to “Senior Counsel”?? And will she now end the relationship with the English Privy Council as Barbados’s court of last resort and join the CCJ?? Surely, any selfrespecting ex-colony can’t have their erstwhile masters telling them how to interpret their law!!

Encashment of $25,000 one-off cash grants extended to Dec 15 – GPL prepaid customers urged to secure grant now

ecipients of the $25,000 cash grant vouchers that are being distributed by the Government of Guyana through the Human Services and Social Security Ministry have up to December 15, 2021 to encash them. The time has been extended to ensure that everyone who is entitled to the grant receives the grant.

Subject Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud made the announcement of the extension this week, while noting that the period is for those who, for some reason or another, could not collect their vouchers. The vouchers can be cashed at any post office, Sure Pay or MoneyGram.

“It is Government’s commitment to public assistance recipients and people living with disabilities.

In addition to our survey, we worked along with the National Commission on Disability and the Poor Law Commission to ensure that persons living with disabilities who were not on our Public Assistance Register were included,” Dr. Persaud explained, adding, “And we are working on a system to deliver this to their homes.”

Following this announcement, pensioners and others can go to their regional offices or to the central offices of the Ministry to up-

lift their 2022 pension books and vouchers.

“December 15 is the latest that we can extend. We just want to make sure that everyone benefits,” Minister Persaud said.

She is also encouraging prepaid customers of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) to secure the onetime electricity credit that the Government has granted. This one-time credit amounts to $3,750, and recipients are urged to visit their nearest GPL office to convert the credit into a prepaid electricity token.

Persons requiring further clarity on this credit are urged to make contact with GPL from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 3pm. GPL’s Call Centre can be contacted on telephone #226- 2600.

The Ministry is advising persons to visit their regular distribution sites for queries regarding permanently disabled people and public assistance (both economic and medical) for the year 2021.

Meanwhile, Dr. Persaud has noted that the recent distribution exercise was a massive undertaking that, by and large, went well, with the support of volunteers, community and regional representatives.

“Our small staff complement was deployed across

regions to ensure that the exercise was efficient and easily accessible. Where there were glitches in the exercise, every effort was

made to rectify them. But it is remarkable that many persons would have already benefited from the voucher and 2022 book in one month,” she said. “The shutin delivery to target the remaining persons is ongoing, and officers from the Ministry are fanning out to conclude the entire exercise by next week, “she added.

Pensioners who are bedridden, visually impaired, or confined to a wheelchair can receive their pensions through direct delivery by registering for the shut-in services.

The ganja was confiscated, and when weighed, amounted to 157.2 grams.

CANU continues to conduct its operations within various communities with the sole intention of dismantling the networks that are engaged in the sale and/or distribution of narcotics in these areas.

One day prior to this bust, CANU ranks destroyed a cannabis farm found in the backlands of Victoria, East

Coast Demerara.

It was reported that CANU officers, acting on intelligence received, conducted an operation in the backlands of Victoria Village and unearthed about 5000 cannabis plants ranging in height from 3 feet to 5 feet.

In addition, fifteen 100lb salt bags containing processed cannabis equivalent to 500kgs were found. The value of the processed ganja is estimated at $70 million.

No one was arrested.

Fisherman attacked, chopped over old grievance

T

he Police are on the hunt for a man who reportedly injured 33-year-old Brian Hutchins, a fisherman of Uitvlugt Sideline Dam, West Coast Demerara (WCD), on Wednesday at about 22:00h in an incident that reportedly took place in the vicinity of Church Street, Anna Catherina, WCD. The Police have said that the victim and the suspect had had a misunderstanding about the mother of the suspect’s child, and on the day in question, the victim was reportedly heading home when the suspect attacked and dealt him several chops about his body

with a cutlass before making good his escape on foot.

The injured man reportedly stopped a motorcar that was passing at the time, and, with the assistance of the driver, was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was treated before being referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

He has reportedly undergone emergency surgery, and his condition is considered serious.

The matter was reported, but checks for the identifiable suspect have proved futile. Investigations into the matter are, however, continuing.

Electric motorcyclist injured following collision

ibi Razac of 104 Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice has been admitted a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital following an accident that occurred on Wednesday along the Sheet Anchor Public Road in East Canje, Berbice.

The accident involved motor car PRR 2107, owned and driven by a 42-year-old resident of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam, and Razac, 57, who was riding an electric bike.

Based on reports received, the motor car was proceeding along the roadway, and the driver alleges

that he indicated his intention to make a turn into Burnt Bush Dam in East Canje. Whilst doing so, he said, Razac ended up in his path, thus resulting in a collision.

As a result of that collision, Razac received injuries about her body. She was picked up in a conscious condition by the said driver and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was admitted with her left wrist and right foot fractured.

The driver of the motor car remains in custody, assisting with the investigation.

Carpenter perishes as fire rips through Enterprise houses Thursday, after neighbours heard a loud ‘knocking’ sound.

Some awoke from their slumber to investigate, and were then horrified by the screams of the man as he tried to break free from the grilled house.

Sarita Ramdhani, who lives adjacent to the Goolchands, recalled seeing the smoke emanating from the house. After she realised what was happening, she went over and called out to the now dead man, and he responded.

carpenter tragically perished during the wee hours of Thursday as he was trapped inside his burning house even as he scrambled to break open the grille, which remained shut in the face of a fire that eventually destroyed two houses at Enterprise, East Coast Demerara.

That fire, which started at Lot 156 Market Street, Enterprise, took the life of Suresh Goolchand and completely destroyed two houses on the property, respectively occupied by Goolchand and his brother.

down,” the woman related.

She added, “I watched, and all I could see is he holding on to the grille and shaking. That’s the noise we were hearing. I holler for Suresh, and he answered…I hustle to open the gate, and by then my neighbours come out. When we rush out, the fire already take him. All we hear is he screamed, and then the fire was all over. There was nothing we could do to assist him at the said time. It’s sad news.”

Only Police vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks authorised to use sirens – Traffic Chief

mid an apparent surge in the use of sirens by ordinary vehicles, Traffic Chief Ramesh Ashram has warned that only emergency-type vehicles are authorised to use

these devices.

“The authorised vehicles to carry sirens is ambulance, Fire and Police.

That’s the authorised vehicles,” Ashram confirmed when contacted for a com-

ment on the issue.

He noted, too, that Police officers or any other officials, in their private capacity, cannot use sirens, unless authorised by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In those cases, the Traffic Chief explained, ranks would be informed by way of a circular.

“If he [Minister] grants permission, he gon send a circular to us,” the Traffic Chief explained.

Ashram admitted that there is an abuse and misuse of sirens, and he said traffic cops would intervene when possible.

“From time to time, we stop them and we examine and we let them take off the sirens…we don’t prosecute them, we take it away from them. And, some occasions,

we revoke the fitness for the vehicles,” he explained, noting that the Police do the same for vehicles with co-

Asked if he could provide an idea of how many cases of this nature the Traffic Department has dealt with for the year, Ashram could not say, but he noted that the problem is countrywide.

In assuring that efforts are being made to arrest the issue, Ashram expressed, “All of we does live in Guyana, and we know what kind of society we living in…”

In March 2019, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) had issued a warning to private security vehicles that have been using sirens. At the time, then Traffic Chief Linden Isles had contended that only emergency vehicles such as ambulances, Police vehicles and Fire trucks are allowed by law to go through traffic with such

aid.

The GPF Traffic Department had pointed out that the Road Traffic (Guyana Fire Service) Order made under Section 49 specifically states what emergency vehicles are.

It explained, “Approved Police Vehicle means any vehicle carrying a lamp showing to the front an amber light and sounding continually a bell, gong or siren.

Vehicle of the Fire Service means any engine, pump, trailer or another vehicle of the Guyana Fire Service, and includes any vehicle carrying a lamp showing an amber light and sounding continually a bell, gong or siren, in which any member of the Guyana Fire Service is being conveyed to any fire or suspected fire”.

She described Goolchand as having been a ‘good person’ in the community.

“He is not a bad person.

He does go to work, come in and lock up. He was working every day. Yesterday was the last time I saw him, when he took out his car to go to work, and then he came home in the afternoon.

He was a good person,” she declared.

The Guyana Fire Service, in a statement, related that it was made aware of the fire at about 03:40h, and a tender from the Melanie Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the location.

“An ambulance and crew

as well as members of the Guyana Police Force also responded to the scene,” added the Fire Service.

An initial assessment indicated that, along with the building, two vehicles located on the western side of the building were severely damaged due to ‘radiated heat’.

A plea was made for citizens to have the necessary fire detection hardware installed in their homes in the event of such incidents, while also exercising caution when carrying out ac-

tivities that could lead to fires.

“Once again, the GFS is urging citizens to equip their homes with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, and to be careful when cooking or using electrical appliances”, the GFS statement said.

Hours after the incident, the Fire Prevention Unit was still on the scene, processing debris and dousing small pockets of fire.

Investigations are continuing.

FITUG calls for 7% salary increase in Private Sector – urges authorities to address ‘pauperising’ wage

T

he Government’s announcement last week of a seven per cent salary increase for all Public Servants retroactive to the beginning of this year has sparked a conversation about pay in the Private Sector, with the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) now calling on private businesses to follow suit in order to attract and retain their workforce.

In a statement made on Thursday, FITUG premised its calls against the backdrop of some businesses in the Private Sector reporting “record-breaking profitability and expansive plans for future investment” despite the wide impacts of COVID-19.

While commending the business sector on its buoyant performance, the union federation contended that this could not have been achieved without the contributions and support of employees.

As such, FITUG insists that these workers should also

benefit from the successes their companies enjoy.

“We believe (that), at the very least, businesses should award their employees no (less) than a seven (7) per cent pay rise. It is our considered view that it allows private businesses to continue to attract and retain skills to sustain their operations, while seeking to alleviate some of the burdens their employees are fetching currently,” the FITUG has said.

FITUG went on to highlight that private companies often fail to address the plights of their employees.

In addition to this, the union body further criticised the Private Sector for not passing on certain benefits they received from the tax cuts and other measures implemented by the Government to ease the burden of the pandemic – an issue which President Dr Irfaan Ali had himself raised.

Several efforts made by Guyana Times to contact offi-

cials from the Private Sector for a response to the rising calls for changes to employees’ pay were futile.

Nevertheless, FITUG noted in its missive that while a seven per cent pay hike, much like the Public Sector, may not be a lot, it is still more than what employees are currently being given by companies.

“As we contrast remuneration in the Public and Private Sectors, we also cannot ignore the widening disparity between the national and Public Sector minimum wages… We are aware that a few businesses pay more than the national minimum wage, but yet there are very many that are rigidly adhering to the basement pay level. At its current level, the national minimum wage is really a pauperisation wage, and we again, as we have several times before, urge the authorities to address in a meaningful manner the long-outstanding issue.

Certainly, there is urgent need for an adjustment,” FITUG contended.

Only Wednesday, Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton told Guyana Times that he would soon be meeting with the National Tripartite Committee, which comprises of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the labour movement representatives, to finalise the enforcement of an increase in the minimum wage from $44,200 to $60,000 per month for Private Sector workers.

Shortly after taking office last year, Minister Hamilton had announced the increase of the Private Sector minimum wage. However, while an order to this effect was made, there was no timeline for its enforcement. This was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has had on businesses.

But now that a year has passed and the country has

been on the path to recovery from the pandemic, Minister Hamilton will be re-engaging the Private Sector on enforcing these increases.

“Everybody agreed that the present minimum wage must be increased. What we have not conclusively dealt with is the timing of the order issued by the Minister – to bring that into effect. So that is where we're at,” he stated.

According to the Labour Minister, he would be meeting with the Tripartite Committee to “discuss this matter and bring it to a conclusion.” That meeting of the Tripartite Committee could be held as early as next week.

“I have had, and I’ve been having, continuous conversation with the Private Sector. When I came here, the Private Sector raised the issue of the intervention of COVID, and therefore that was a fundamental issue in the conversation within the

Tripartite Committee. The union reps of course [were] saying, ‘Sign the order now’, and the Private Sector is saying, ‘Give us some time to revive’ from the pandemic,” he explained.

But even as FITUG lobbies for better wages and salaries for Private Sector workers, the union body joined in expressing concerns over Government’s seven per cent pay rise for Public Servants after taking the wider situation into account as well as the plight of the ordinary people.

However, Government, through its various Ministers including Minister Hamilton, has defended the salary increase, saying that it should be viewed in a wider context with all the other initiatives, including the various cash grants that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration has distributed since coming into office in August 2020.

Mohamed’s Enterprise also explained that it has applied that experience garnered over the years to countless projects in recent times. “We have constructed four of the major laydown yards currently in use by many of the oil and gas companies and tier one contractors. Our exceptional work

Further, Mohamed’s Enterprise said it has used its resources, its labour, skilled and competent Guyanese engineers, contractors and workers to respond to the demand for quality work, and for that it has no apologies in ensuring that the best quality work and projects would benefit all Guyanese.

“It is unfortunate that the detractors would question our experience when we have completed 20 core homes within our contracted period and handed them over to the Housing and Water Ministry. We are also ahead of schedule on the construction of the prison facilities at Lusignan, ahead of experienced contractors in this field; this speaks to our expertise, competence, dedication to quality, and acknowledgment of the growing demands of such a need,” the company posited.

The company also stated that it does not intend to waste or misuse taxpayers’ hard-earned money, and for this reason, it has ensured that all projects are approached with the necessary due diligence and under the necessary rule of law.

The Home Affairs Ministry on Wednesday awarded a contract to the tune of $614 million to Mohamed’s Enterprise for the construction of the new head office of the Guyana Fire Service. The building will be erected on a site on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. Construction will commence no later than December 1, 2021, and the building is expected to be completed in 14 months’ time.

Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, who witnessed the signing ceremony, said the relocation of the Guyana Fire and Ambulance Service would help increase the emergency response time, as it would be away from the heavily congested Stabroek Market area.

The new facility would

allow the Fire Service Headquarters more space, and greater capacity to hold the equipment and assets, Benn stated. Benn noted that Georgetown is physically expanding to the east and south.

It was only on Monday that President Dr Irfaan Ali met with contractors executing various Government projects across the country and had frank discussions with them about their work ethics, quality and competence.

The Head of State underscored the critical role contractors play in ensuring the country successfully goes through a revolutionary period of growth and development, and called on contractors to get their act together.

In addition to cautioning them about meeting deadlines, President Ali issued a warning to contractors who

bid for, and take on, more projects that they can handle, noting that such situations must be stopped.

The President also emphasised that it is important for contractors to address their shortcomings, since tremendous opportunities would be opened for them in the near future. He explained that the local content legislation alone would open “tremendous opportunities” that would further deplete the contracting pool.

“There are two ways you address this: the first is that you adopt a winning culture; or the second is for you to stay where you are, be happy, and slowly be pushed out of what is happening. To adapt, you have to invest.

You have to grow yourself in quality, in equipment, and understand what is coming at you,” the Head of State posited.

PAHO urges caution as COVID cases rise in the Americas

W

ith Europe seeing record spikes in COVID-19 infections and cases rising by 23 percent in the Americas over the past week, Director of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), Dr Carissa F Etienne, has warned that there is no room for complacency in tackling the pandemic.

“As end-of-year celebrations approach, get vaccinated, keep gatherings small, and ensure mask-wearing and social distancing, especially indoors,” she urged in a media briefing today.

Over the last few weeks, many European countries have reported record numbers of new cases despite high vaccination coverage.

The relaxation of public health measures combined with pockets of unvaccinated people have created the perfect environment for the virus to spread, Dr. Etienne has said.

“Throughout this pandemic, Europe has been a window into the future for the Americas,” the PAHO Director warned. “The future

is unfolding before us, and it must be a wake-up call for our region.”

Upward trends are already seen throughout the Americas, particularly in the United States and Canada.

In South America, nearly every country is reporting increased incidents, including those in the Southern Cone. High rates of infection are also reported in the Caribbean.

Central America is the

only area to have experienced a drop in new infections.

While just over half of the people in Latin America and the Caribbean are now fully vaccinated against COVID, 19 countries have yet to reach the WHO target of 40% vaccination coverage by the end of 2021. Despite this, preventative measures are being lifted, including in densely populated areas.

“Every time we lower our guard, the virus gains momentum and threatens our hard-fought gains.” the PAHO Director has said.

Last year, the Americas saw a jump in new cases following the holiday season, and that jump took months to decline. With the upcoming holidays and summer vacations in the Southern Hemisphere, Dr. Etienne has warned, “Our individual and collective decisions chart the path of this pandemic.”

It is therefore crucial that individuals get vaccinated as soon as possible, to protect against severe cases of the disease and prevent hospitals from becoming over-

whelmed, particularly if they plan to travel, she said.

More than 1.3 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the Americas, and PAHO is working to expand access in places that are falling behind. The PAHO Director

has said that continued public health measures alongside vaccination are also key to reducing the spread.

These include mask wearing, social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings, particularly indoors.

“We’ve already faced the

consequences of an uncontrolled pandemic, and we don’t want to be in that position again,” she added.

“It’s up to all of us to make smart and safe choices this holiday season, so we can protect ourselves and each other from this virus.”

Early Childhood Development space established at Annai Health Centre – programme to be rolled out in other identified regions

dedicated Early C h i l d h o o d Development (ECD) space, the first-ever at the Annai Health Centre, was opened Monday last following the training of 15 healthcare and community workers from Annai and surrounding villages in the North Rupununi, Region 9 (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

for a handover event, the first under the ECD component of the Canada-funded ‘Promoting safe and healthy learning and living environments to migrants and host communities in Guyana’s hinterland project’, which is being implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in close coordination with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

The Early Childhood Development aspect of the project focuses on ensuring that all girls and boys four

years and younger, and their parents, have access to quality ECD programming.

“Much of Canada’s work in Guyana focuses heavily on supporting Indigenous women, youth, vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations,” said Peake, who is on her first visit to Guyana.

She highlighted that the project with UNICEF also caters for migrants from neighbouring Venezuela, who have been forced to flee harsh economic conditions in their homeland.

“The project will work

in Annai and other similar communities across Guyana, and will focus on early childhood development activities for children under 4 years of age, as well as on providing safe, healthy, gender-friendly and climate-smart dormitories for adolescent children,” Peake said.

She further reiterated that “All of Canada’s international assistance is guided by a feminist international assistance policy which places the empowerment and advancement of women and girls as the key priority.”

For the recent exercise, 15 community health and community stakeholders from Annai, Wowetta, Aranaputa, Rupertee, Kwatamang and Surama were trained in ECD activities over a period of three days. Aside from the Dedicated Space at the Annai Health Centre, materials were handed out to each of the communities to aid with the delivery of ECD sessions.

These would include sessions at health facilities and through home visits, with parents of children attending antenatal and infant and pre-school clinics all adhering to COVID-19 protocols.

Some 417 children from the district are expected to initially benefit in the near term.

“We have our staff well equipped with the training and skills required…we will do our best to get our children stimulated at a very young age, so they can grow up to be well rounded and educated adults,” Dr Torres added.

Human Services Ministry launches 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

T

he Ministry of Human Services and Social Security on Thursday joined the rest of the world in kicking off 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence under the theme “Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now!” It is an annual campaign that begins on Nov 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until December 10, when Human Rights Day is observed. This campaign was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991, and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.

Used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against

women and girls, the initiative has the full support of subject Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud, who has organised several important and impactful activities to be conducted during this period.

“It is an important period for the Ministry annually. Following on from where we started last year, it is my intention that there be tangible events that make an impact on communities. The slant of all our activities will be reflective of the Ministry’s slogan, ‘Enough with the Violence’,” Dr Persaud commented.

She explained that, as part of the community engagement, a series of panel discussions will be held in several regions across the country, with presentations being made by persons in the legal, health, and social work fields, and by survivors and advo-

Further, the Ministry would use this period to amplify the work of the 914 hotline number as an important part of its fight against domestic violence.

he Officer-in-charge of traffic in Region Six (East Berbice/ Corentyne), Assistant Superintendent Raun Clark, has expressed concern over the use of electric bikes on public roadways.

This comes hours after a 57-year-old woman was injured after colliding with a motorcar while riding one of those electric bikes.

The Divisional Traffic Officer weighing in on the use of these new electric-type bikes on the roadways, saying much more caution is needed in their use.

It was only in October that a labourer riding an electric bike was pinned and killed by being crushed by a lorry at Kilcoy, Corentyne; and on Wednesday last, the rider of an electric bike

passed away two weeks after being involved in an accident in East Canje.

Concern has been expressed by many road users over the use of electric-type cycles, especially by young children, many of whom do not know traffic signs and laws. In a social media post on Thursday, a resident, Imran Amin, related, “Here is the craziness of these persons riding the electric bikes, persons who would not even ride a bicycle on the road you will see riding these electric bikes.”

However, according to Clark, there is no law for the Traffic Department to enforce against the users of those cycles. He expressed concern that there is no standard age range to use them.

“So, what we find is that

we have children using these cycles with no prior knowledge as it relates to the rules of the road, and they are using the cycles weaving in and out of traffic, which is very dangerous.

One of the disadvantages with the electric cycles is that they do not keep any noise so as to alert other road users, including drivers, that they are approaching. So, what you find is that these cycles travelling at a fast rate of speed and are upon you without any prior indication," Clark noted.

The Traffic Department, he noted, would be reaching out to that category of road users, and even the parents of some in that category, advising children to use the bikes only in safe environments.

“I am advising road users to ensure that they use the road in a safe manner, because there is no age range for persons using electric cycle, and it is very difficult for our department at this time. However, we were trying to educate road users across the region on a daily basis, which we anticipate may mitigate against the rising number of accidents," he said.

Meanwhile, as it relates to the use of helmets, the Assistant Superintendent said that, by law, electric bikes cannot be driven, only ridden, hence the law cannot mandate the use of such protective gear. However, he said that, in the interest of the rider’s own safety, users are advised to use crash helmets when riding electric bikes on the roadway.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Community Health Worker for Wowetta, Yasmin Andries, who added that the ECD materials for the communities would assist greatly in their outreach to parents. Andries noted that part of the training includes developing their outreach plans, and they are ready to begin immediately.

Speaking on behalf of the Human Services and Social Security Ministry, Executive Officer of the Ministry’s ECD Unit, Lavern Thorne, said the Ministry recognises the significant impact ECD has on the lives of children, and has joined with partners to ensure that all children thrive and meet their potential.

She said the Ministry looks forward to continued support from UNICEF and Canada to help accomplish these goals.

The ECD component of the Promoting safe and healthy learning and living environments to migrants and host communities in Guyana’s hinterland project seeks to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 4: by 2030, ensure that

all girls/boys under 5 years have access to quality early childhood development, so that they are ready for primary education.

The project would prioritise quality services to give a jumpstart especially to the most marginalised children, including migrants living in the targeted communities, to ensure that no one is left behind. It would also address the challenge of poor water and sanitation practices. It is expected that, by December 2022, at least 75% of girls and boys under 4 years of age in 100 communities in the targeted locations in Regions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 have access to quality ECD programmes and family support services, and have readiness skills for easy and on-time transition to nursery school.

Another component of the project focuses on safe, secure, healthy learning environments for secondary school adolescent boys and girls living in dormitories in Guyana’s hinterland, through system strengthening and gender-responsive programming for healthy lifestyles.

Iyer and Jadeja make it India’s day on testing Kanpur track S

hreyas Iyer scored a debut half-century full of calculated aggression against spin and put on an unbroken 113 for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja to lift India out of a tricky situation midway through day one and put them in control of the Kanpur Test.

At stumps, India were 258 for 4 with Iyer batting on 75, his last scoring shot of the day a muscular six over midwicket off Will Somerville, which convinced New Zealand to go off for bad light rather than bowl more spin to complete the 90over requirement for the day.

Jadeja, meanwhile, had just reached his 17th half-century in Test cricket.

That India played only five specialist batters, despite missing Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant, was down in part to the confidence they must have had in their replacements – another of whom, Shubman Gill, stroked a smooth 52 earlier in the day – but also the faith they had in Jadeja’s batting ability.

And it was the quicks who took all four wickets, with Kyle Jamieson leading the way with 3 for 47 and showing exactly why he was preferred over Neil Wagner.

The softball game will be an Over-50 contest be-

tween Mike’s Wellman and Floodlights. Several guest players who rubbed shoulders with Hussain during his playing days will also be involved.

That game starts at 10:30h (10:30am) and will be followed by the hardball game. Most of the same players will be involved.

Reyaz, as he was popu-

larly called, was a long-serving player and executive of GFSCA. As a matter of fact, he was there from the inception 16 years ago until his demise after just passing the age of 50. He served in many positions and did so with distinction. He was the captain of the team on its first overseas tour to Florida. He played a major role in all the tournaments, and the Guyana Softball Cup, hosted by GFSCA over the years. He also was a player and then executive of the famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and mounded superstars such as Ramnaresh Sarwan, Reon King, and Leon Johnson just to name a few.

He was a popular TV personality hosting a daily morning programme with NTN and cricket announcer whenever there was regional or international cricket in Guyana.

Nicholson credits Forde masterclass for SA 10K win M

arlon Nicholson is expectedly on a high after winning his first South American 10K Road Race on Sunday last.

Competing in suitably overcast conditions for such a lengthy run, Nicholson, of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), clocked 33:27.80 to not only clinch victory but to also finish ahead of a number of experienced campaigners.

The likes of which included Winston Missigher (33:38.30), Odwin Tudor (33:39.30) and Cleveland Thomas (34:33.30).

Speaking with the media following his victorious run, Nicholson explained that he began training late, after

seeking permission from his superiors in the GDF. “Well, you know, for the first I surprised, ‘cause when I hear that the South American 10K is on, I said to myself ‘I wasn’t running whole year’ and then I started asking my Sergeant Major for time to train ‘cause I wasn’t getting the time,” the soldier-athlete said.

He further stated, “It was a short period of time training; it was a month and couple days. I put in the work night and day, then you know I started resting, started feeling great and I started doubting myself saying I can’t make it, but today was a big victory for me.”

he sought expert advice on the race he was about to attempt. That advice came from fellow GDF athlete Cleveland Forde, who was the man to beat in any 10K race just a few years ago.

“I talk to Cleveland Forde, I called him on the phone and said, ‘Cleveland, I want run this race’ and he was like ‘you ready for this’ and I said’ yeah, no problem’,” Nicholson disclosed.

“He was like ‘Son’ be patient, it’s all about patience’, and you know, I held my composure and wait for my turn. And what he told me to do, that’s exactly what came out as a victory for me.”

grateful for the assistance he received in achieving the feat, noting that it was a remarkable one for him.

Nicholson said, “That was something good for me, an achievement for me.

Never did it before in a big, main event like this. I want to say thanks to everybody.”

This year’s South American 10K Road Race followed the familiar route, starting at the GTT Earth Station on Carifesta Avenue, on to Rupert Craig Highway and turning back at the University of Guyana Road, on to Kitty Public Road, then Irving Street into Thomas Lands and finishing in the National Park at the Children’s Monument.

IPL 2022 – Delhi Capitals to retain Pant, Shaw, Axar, Nortje …Rajasthan Royals retain Captain Sanju Samson

elhi Capitals have decided to retain the quartet of Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar

Patel and Anrich Nortje for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. However, Capitals' former Captain Shreyas Iyer, who made his Test debut on Thursday, has decided to head to the player auction instead.

While Capitals could see Iyer's exit as a setback, they wouldn't have been entirely surprised by the batter's decision. Ever since the Capitals handed the captaincy to Pant ahead of IPL 2021, after Iyer was ruled out of the first leg due to shoulder surgery in April, the franchise faced the question of whether they could retain Iyer.

Iyer had taken over from Gautam Gambhir as the side's Captain midway through IPL 2018. In the next season, Iyer led the Delhi franchise to the play-offs for the first time since 2012. In IPL 2019, they made their first final, but eventually lost to Mumbai Indians.

Earlier this March, during the One-Day International (ODI) leg of the home series against England, Iyer dislocated his shoulder in the field and had to undergo surgery, forcing the Capitals to appoint Pant at the time as an interim captain. Although Iyer returned for the second leg of the IPL, played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October-November, Pant was retained as the Captain.

ESPNcricinfo has learnt that although Iyer can still be bought by the two new franchises, he has decided to go to the auction where at least five teams from the eight existing franchises will be on the lookout for a new captain.

It is understood that while Pant was the first name on Capitals' retention list, Shaw became the second once Iyer ruled himself out. Shaw, who made headlines during India's 2018 Under-19 World Cup victory, was bought at the auction the same year for INR 1.2 crore (US$161,058).

Shaw, who recently turned 22, is one of the most destructive openers across formats.

At Capitals, he has acknowledged his growth under the coaching pair of Ricky Ponting and Praveen Amre, so the franchise did not need much to deliberate upon.

In contrast, Nortje and Axar were not straightforward choices. Nortje, who had joined Capitals in 2020, was retained ahead of his South Africa team-mate Kagiso Rabada.

While Nortje has never played the IPL in India, his numbers in the UAE were highly impressive. Twelve of Nortje's 34 IPL wickets came in the powerplay, the third most by any bowler in that phase since his debut.

While Rabada, who joined the Capitals in 2018, had taken 22 of his 45 wickets across the last two IPLs at the death, his economy rate in that phase was 9.44, much higher than Nortje, who went at 7.82, the best for anyone to have bowled a minimum of 100 balls across the two seasons. Those numbers seemed to have convinced the Capitals' management that Nortje was a better bet than Rabada.

As for Axar, he was in contention with senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan, who joined the Capitals in 2019 after being traded from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

It was a homecoming after 11 years for Dhawan, who had played for Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) in the inaugural

IPL season in 2008. Dhawan did not disappoint: since his return in 2019, only KL Rahul (1889 runs) has scored more than Dhawan's 1726 runs, which came at a healthy strike rate of 134.63. In 49 innings since 2019, Dhawan has an average of 39.22 and even scored hundreds in successive innings in IPL 2020.

While Dhawan has been Capital's best batter, Axar's case became stronger because of his all-round skills, especially his control with the ball.

Since his debut for Capitals in 2019, Axar has 34 wickets in 41 games. His economy rate of 6.73 is the best for a Capitals bowler in these three seasons among the players to have bowled at least 50 balls.

Axar was also the joint-highest wicket-taker during the recent T20 International series against New Zealand where

he had an economy rate of only six across the 11 overs, while conceding only one six.

The IPL had set November 30 as the deadline for the eight existing teams to retain players. Existing teams can retain a maximum of four players while the two new teams – based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad – can buy up to three players from the non-retained lot by December 25.

While the salary purse for the auction has been enhanced to 90 crore (US$12,079,377) per team, the IPL has also set different salary slabs to be deducted based on the players retained. If a team retains four players, INR 44 crore (US$5,905,473) get deducted from the purse. If the team retains three players it would lose INR 33 crore (US$4,429,104) from its purse, INR 24 crore (US$3,221,167)

for two players and INR 14 crore (US$1,879,014) if it retains just one player. Any uncapped player retained can get a maximum of INR 4 crore (US$536,861). Importantly, the player has the ultimate authority to decide whether he wants to be retained or be part of the auction.

After the match, wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua Da Silva, who constructed a

half-century, called for more application as the second Test match is set for Monday, November 29.

“I just think, the boys, we need to fight. We need to believe in ourselves. Nobody goes out there to fail; everybody tries their best, it is just a bit of application. Give yourself some time; you have a lot more time. You have five days,” Da Silva told CWI media.

“You cannot really fault the boys, if we played a bit in front at times, especially in the first innings. In the second innings, Sri Lanka were

on top, and we just needed to fight.”

Da Silva noted that the Sri Lankans played their usual cricket and used their home advantage, hence their dominant performance. Before this match, Da Silva was struggling to get among the runs, but he was backed by the management to come good, and he did in the second innings.

However, a collective approach is needed for West Indies to improve in the second Test and work towards their first Test win in Sri Lanka. After a heavy defeat as such, changes are expected for the West Indies team.

Embuldeniya five-for helps Sri Lanka beat looming rain and West Indies N

krumah Bonner defied Sri Lanka for 173 balls on day five, Joshua Da Silva joined him for a 100-run, 44.4over stand, but although the sky was swimming with dark clouds, rain did not arrive until minutes after Sri Lanka claimed the last wicket to clinch victory in Galle.

Having scythed through West Indies' top order on the fourth evening, Sri Lanka's spinners were made to toil on day five, bowling 48.3 overs for the last four wickets.

Offspinner Ramesh Mendis had begun the day with four wickets to his name, but it was left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya who finished with a five-wicket haul – the third of his 11-Test career –- claiming all but one of the wickets to fall on day five. Praveen Jayawickrama took the other one. Between them, Sri Lanka's three frontline spinners took 18 wickets in the 187-run victory.

Bonner and Da Silva battled hard during their morning resistance, trying few run-scoring strokes, and generally displaying a level of concentration and application unseen from West Indies' batters so far in the match. They had contrasting styles – Da Silva more comfortable on the front

They each had good fortune. On a treacherous track, there were edges that fell short of slip, aerial mis-

hits that landed in space, deliveries that barely missed the stumps and the outside edge, and missed chances as well. Da Silva could have been run out on 19 when the pair attempted a quick sin-

gle, but the cover fielder's throw missed the stumps.

He could have been caught on 23 when he inside-edged a big-spinning Mendis delivery, but Pathum Nissanka could not hold on to a tough chance at leg slip, diving to his right. Later, Nissanka would grass another tough chance at short leg, this time off Bonner. But so long as the rain held off, it seemed as if Sri Lanka would continue to create chances, so rapid was the turn off the surface.

With Da Silva's dismissal in the half-hour before lunch, West Indies' chances of securing a draw dipped substantially. He had completed a fifty off 121 balls,

but was squared up by a turning Embuldeniya delivery a few overs later, with the resultant edge held by Dhananjaya de Silva at slip.

Rahkeem Cornwall then joined Bonner, and put in a shift that lasted 46 balls until he ran out of patience, toe-edging a catch to midoff when he attempted to heave Jayawickrama down the ground. Warrican, the No 10, saw out 20 balls before he gave a bat-pad catch to silly mid-off. Shannon Gabriel, whom Bonner was trying desperately to shield from the strike, was also

squared up and caught at slip off Embuldeniya, after a six-ball stay. Bonner remained unbeaten on 68 off 220 balls.

The victory was perhaps just reward for Sri Lanka, whose top order led

by Dimuth Karunaratne had dominated in both innings, and whose spinners used helpful conditions well. They earn 12 World Test Championship points in their first match this cycle. West Indies also have 12 points, but have played three matches.

Local swimmers optimistic ahead of Junior Pan Am Games

ith the Junior Pan American Games commencing today, Guyana’s swimming team are likely to be the first in action in Colombia.

Aleka Persaud, Leon Seaton, and siblings Patrice and Paul Mahaica were the Guyanese swimmers to make the cut for the first-ever Junior Pan American Games.

While the team have benefited from the expertise of their individual coaches, the hope to excel in Colombia is common amongst the group.

Speaking with Guyana Times Sport prior to their departure earlier this week, the swimmers shared their individual expectations and foreseeable challenges.

For Seaton, his recent slew of international appearances has readied him for the big stage in Cali, Colombia.

“My preparation has been [going] really, really well. I’ve

been to Peru; I’ve done a week of training; I even competed in Peru. My results from my previous competitions have been okay. I mean we’re looking forward for better results in Colombia and we’re gonna bring home some golds,” Seaton told this publication.

He went on to say this about his training, “My international training will be a great factor for me. For the fact that I trained overseas for a few months, roughly eight. I believe that my training will help me along in Colombia and put me up against the other swimmers.”

He said, “I expect to improve my times and rank Guyana very high within the medal table, so we can come home looking very nice for our nation.”

Only recently, with the exception of Paul Mahaica, the swimmers participated in the Junior South American

Swimming Championships.

Referencing this, Patrice Mahaica said it has been great exposure for her.

“It was really great, other than the high altitude, the competition was really great.

I improved my times and I made personal bests,” the younger Mahaica sibling said.

When quizzed about whether or not the unfamiliar altitude in Colombia will affect her, she answered, “Yes and no. It all depends on how warm your body is, but other than that, it is a challenge.”

Patrice kept her expectations simple, sharing that she was focused on bettering her PB once again.

“I expect to do my best and I hope to improve my timings in all my events,” she said.

As for her brother, Paul Mahaica Jr, his outlook is also quite simple.

“I hope to improve my time and swim my best,” the young

man told this publication.

He added, “I was training

continuously for the past couple months, very hard with my coach.”

Asked the same question about altitude worries, the elder Mahaica was quite confident he would be able to stand up to the test.

Paul stated, “My father has been training me harder than usual, to be stronger for high-altitude swimming.”

On the other hand, Olympian Aleka Persaud explained how that experience has not only boosted her swimming but given her better insight into the international circuit.

“I would say it has given me a better view on the sport, shows me what I have to do to be the best. I think I’m work-

ing to get to the top,” Persaud said about her outing at the Olympic Games earlier this year.

She continued, “It has given me motivation, the push, the want to compete at the very first Junior Pan American Games. I know what to expect and I will put my best foot forward.”

“My expectation is to improve my times and do the best that I can do,” the 15-year-old concluded.

Guyana’s swimming team are being coached by Paul Mahaica Sr and the team will dive into action this weekend. The Junior Pan American Games will conclude on Sunday, December 5.

ordan Johnson and Guyana’s Matthew Nandu were shining stars for Team Auguste in the team’s win over Team DePeiza in the third West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 warm-up game on Thursday at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

In pursuit of 240, Team Auguste coasted to an eight-wicket victory in just 40.3 overs. Team Auguste were 56-2 when Johnson joined the left-handed opener Nandu, and the duo were dominant in an unbeaten stand of 184.

Jordan finished on 111 not out off 104 balls with 13 fours and one six, while Nandu struck 85* off 98 balls, decorated with eight fours.

Team DePeiza had posted 239 from 49.3 overs with opener Shaq Parris making 60 off 84 (7x4s) and Kevin Wickham 55 off 71 (4x4s, 1×6).

Giovonte DePeiza missed out on

a half-century, scoring 49 off 50 balls (1×4, 4x6s). Bowling for Team Auguste, Nathan Edwards took 3-45, Nandu 2-34, and Vasant Singh 2-47.

Team DePeiza won the first two games, the opening one by six wickets and the second by two wickets.

The West Indies Rising Stars Under19s are preparing for the prestigious International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup tournament, which they last won in 2016 under Shimron Hetmyer.

This edition of the U-19 World Cup will be hosted by Cricket West Indies (CWI) in the Caribbean from January 4 to February 3, 2022.

The warm-up games are part of a five-match series to finalise the squad preparation for the global event. Game four is on Saturday (November 27) at the same venue in Jordan Johnson and Matthew Nandu were both unbeaten Antigua.
