s Guyana, like the rest of the world, celebrates Christmas in unprecedented conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President Dr Irfaan Ali said that this festive season brings hope despite challenges that are being faced.

On behalf of himself, First Lady Arya Ali and their son, Zayd, the Head of State extended holiday greetings to the nation in his first Christmas message.

President Ali said Guyanese are sturdy and can overcome any trial and tribulation thrown their way – something which was evident over the past year the country has faced.

“Christmas echoes a message of hope. Whatever our circumstances or however daunting the challenges we face, Christmas reminds us that hope offers a respite from distress, disappointments and despair. Our recent history has vindicated the hope with which we were seized when things, temporarily, went asunder,” he posited.

To this end, the Guyanese leader noted: “We have overcome past crises. We will overcome the present pandemic, and we will be ready to confront future crises, should

they arise.”

According to the President, hope and life are intertwined and Christmas is a celebration of life.

“At Christmas, we honour life by commemorating the birth of an infant, Jesus.

The Holy Bible announces the mission of Christ as one aimed at giving life and doing so abundantly. Through our Christmas traditions, we do a little more, have a little more, and ensure that the less fortunate receive a little more of our kindness. These are our ways of commemorating the life-giving gift of Christmas,” he stated.

President Ali further posited that Christmas is also a time for saying thanks. As

such, he expressed appreciation to all Guyanese, at home and in the Diaspora, whose loyalty and love of country, he said, make everyone feel proud to be Guyanese. He also thanked the frontline workers for their “admirable courage and commitment” in the face of the threats posed by the pandemic.

In addition, the Head of State also applauded the members of the Disciplined Services for the efforts they are making to improve safety and security. He also thanked the public servants, miners, fishers, farmers and workers in the manufacturing and services sectors and, indeed, all Guyanese, who have helped to navigate this most testing year.

“Through our combined efforts, we are fashioning a better life… Our country has a bright and exciting future ahead. A mighty and unstoppable hand is scripting our future,” the President stated.

Against this backdrop, the Guyanese leader called on citizens to remain resilient and united, while avoiding negativity.

“We, therefore, must avoid the temptation of succumbing to negativity and despondency. . I urge that we trust in and believe that, with the

Creator’s guidance, we shall emerge stronger, more resilient and united. I encourage all Guyanese to keep the embers of hope alight. May you all have a happy and hopefilled Christmas!” President Ali declared.

Meanwhile, the APNU/ AFC Opposition in its Christmas message to the nation, urged citizens to continue to take precautions against the novel coronavirus and adhere to the COVID-19 safety measures as they observe the Christmas festivities.

“Your life and health and that of every member of your family are paramount and we urge you to take all precautions to remain safe this season. As a country, 2020 has been a difficult year for all of us. However, we are grateful to the Almighty for bringing us through this far.

We extend best wishes to you and your family for the year ahead, even as we project that it will be another challenging year for us as Guyanese,” the coalition party stated.

The APNU/AFC went on to encourage persons who are in the position to do so, to help the less fortunate so that they too can have a “bright Christmas” at a time that is “bleak and unhappy” for many.

n the spirit of giving, the Salvation Army held its first-ever “Christmas Angel Tree Programme” which saw some 70 children receiving electronic tablets.

These devices are expected to assist the beneficiaries with their online classes during the school closure.

Held on Wednesday, the event saw participation of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) at the simple ceremony held at the Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters.

In brief remarks, Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Edward Boyer, urged the children to care the tablets and ensure the devices are utilised for the intended purpose.

In his feature address, Chief Education Officer (CEO) Dr. Marcel Hutson lauded the Salvation Army

for this much-needed initiative, and the relief efforts towards those in need.

Dr. Hutson noted the importance of building capacity among young people, enabling them to take up leadership positions.

Handing out the tablets were Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Mr. Nicholas Deygoo; Mr.

Ramesh Persaud; Major General Norman McLean; Mr. Edward Boyer, Dr. Marcel Hutson, and Major Matignol Saint-Lot. A commitment was given for this to be an annual initiative, and the Private Sector Commission has expressed intention to become a major partner in this initiative going forward.

Christmas and COVID-19 A

s we celebrate Christmas today, it is time for reflection on the year that is about to end. This year is unlike another in the past; Guyana, like the rest of the world, has been impacted significantly by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Millions of people worldwide have been placed on the poverty line due to loss of jobs, slowdown in economies, and, in some instances, complete closure of businesses.

Guyana has not escaped the impact of this deadly pandemic. Many of our fellow Guyanese have navigated the impact of COVID-19.

As we celebrate Christmas today – the birthday of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem over two millennia ago.

The narrative of his birth is very important for us today, and not only because the religion founded in his name is easily the largest and most widespread among the seven billion or so humans on planet Earth today, but for the message encapsulated in his life.

Born in a manger among the domesticated animals kept there, the baby Jesus was of humble stock, since his nominal father Joseph was a carpenter. Joseph was made the patron saint of workers by the Catholics and even some protestant denominations, while Jesus ministered mostly to the poor during his sojourn on earth. In the Bible, it is written: “When he (Jesus) came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we are convinced that this country has a bright future ahead, and all our leaders must look beyond politics and work together in the nation’s interest.

There are still many challenges confronting the nation; for example, quite a number of persons are living below the poverty line, public infrastructure is not up to standard, social services such as health and education need to be improved, many young people cannot afford to further their studies or acquire specialised training, unemployment, constant power outages and so on. Our oil wealth, despite the heightened level of optimism it brings, will not solve all of the country’s problems, but, if managed properly, would certainly give a tremendous boost to our development potential. There is no doubt that with our oil wealth, the opportunity to become a progressive and modern state is now right in front of us. It is now up to our political leaders, the business community, civil society, and citizens themselves to work in harmony so as to ensure that all this talk about oil and the huge potential it has for our development could really translate into actually improving the quality of life for everyone here. The fact is, Guyana is now considered a country with massive opportunities, and everyone must position themselves to benefit from the oil sector.

Today, as we celebrate Christmas, let us remember that Guyana has another opportunity to become a wonderful country; a place where young people would be happy to stay and help in its development.

Happy Gita Jayanti and Merry Christmas Dear Editor, The month of December is quite a celebrated month, especially in ending a leap year, a much-dreaded thought that entertains a negative imagination with contorted and convoluted perceptions.

This year 2020 has unbelievably posed unprecedented challenges which are compounded with the components of potent damages, devastation and destruction. The Jewish community celebrated their “Festival of Lights”, called Hanukkah, earlier this month, from the 10th to the 18th. These 9 days of “dedication” are observed by the lighting of candles on a menorah. The 7-day African celebration of Kwanzaa is to follow on the 26th day of the month of December to January 1st. This period is dedicated to the observance of life and to honour their heritage. The much-awaited Christmas is being celebrated on the 25th to observe the birth of Jesus Christ by Christians, this being a national holiday throughout the world.

Incidentally, Hindus in all parts of the world are also celebrating Gita Jayanti, the “birth” of the Bhagwat Gita, on the 25th of December this year, coinciding with Christmas Day. Gita Jayanti Mahotsav possesses huge significance and importance as it is regarded as the birthday of the Bhagwat Gita, which is considered as the most pi-

ous and influential scriptures of Hindu Philosophy.

It comprises political, spiritual, psychological, practical and philosophical values. Thus, to commemorate the sacred day when Lord Krishna offered his philosophical teachings to Arjuna during the battle of Kurukshetra, people celebrate Gita Jayanti.

Gita Jayanti falls on the Shukla Ekadashi of the waxing phase of Moon in the Hindu month of Margashirsha. The celebrations of Gita Jayanti take place in several parts of the country of India, but the grand fervour can be seen in Kurukshetra. Devotees across India gather in Kurukshetra to participate in the ritual of taking holy baths in the sacred ponds named Brahm Sarovar and Sannihit Sarovar. To celebrate the day, a fair popularly known as Gita Jayanti Samaroh is organized every year, which lasts for almost seven days. Thousands of people gather and celebrate the festival with Gita readings, dance performances, skits, dramas, acts, bhajans, aartis, talks etc.

The text is written in the third person, narrated by Sanjaya toking Dhritarashtra as it transpired between Sri Krishna and Arjuna. Sanjaya, the secretary of the blind King Dhritarashtra, had been blessed by his Guru, Veda Vyasa, with the power to remotely view the events taking place on the battle-

field of Kurukshetra (modern day Haryana, India) as they transpired some 5000 years ago. Gita Jayanti is celebrated worldwide by all devotees of Lord Krishna who revere Bhagavad Gita as their Divine Mother because she teaches (in a non-sectarian and scientific manner) how to re-establish our lost relationship with God Almighty (The Supreme).

The 700 verses of the Gita are chanted throughout the day. Devotees also fast on this day since it is an Ekadashi day (Ekadasi is the eleventh day of the waxing moon and waning moon) – it occurs twice every lunar month and is observed by fasting from grains and lentils (peas, beans, dhals) by those who seek to progress spiritually.

Special bhajans and kirtans are sung, and poojas are held on this day. In places where this festival is celebrated grandly, stage play and Gita chanting competitions are held for kids to show their talents as a way to encourage their interest in reading Gita. Yogis, Sanyasins, Swamis and learned scholars give talks and hold forums of this Holy Scripture. Leaflets, pamphlets, and books containing the essence of Gita are distributed to the public. It is especially auspicious to distribute free copies of the Gita on this holy day.

This has been a year particularly when the need

for caring and sharing was highlighted, and man was tested for the spirit of generosity and charity. The Bhagwat Gita teaches us that, “A gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the right person at the right time and at the right place, and when we expect nothing in return.” No matter how great the struggle for survival becomes, regardless of the humongous challengers when many obstacles and impediments face us, the approach to a resolute determination is reproached by the will of strength and durability and the strong belief in a faith devoted to that “Higher Power,” referred to by multiple names but shadowed on a single path to oneness.

The Gita reminds us that, “The impermanent appearance of happiness and distress and their disappearance in due course are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from a sense of perception, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.”

On this grand and dual occasion, may peace, bliss, joy and happiness transcend upon all with the choicest blessings of Lord Krishna. May the spirit of the season remain with all throughout our lives.

We can continue to build on the things that matter Dear Editor, First, my sincerest wishes to all for a blessed Christmas, a Christmas deeply rooted in the mystery of the incarnation, grasping and celebrating the wonder and awe and affirmation of God taking on our human form.

During the course of this year, now coming to its end, we all have been part of and heard many stories of isolation, lockdown, confinement and quarantine.

The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened every life on the planet, many have had to battle with infections and too many have died.

COVID-19 is still with us and one of my Christmas wishes to all is that you remain vigilant, keeping up all the measures of distance, isolation, sanitising and wearing of masks.

Today, as at the time of the birth of Jesus, we also have to grapple with the “viruses” that are present in the form of violence, corruption, prejudice, exploitation; “viruses” that have their own means of transmission and infection, can work their way into our “spiritual DNA”

and become such a threat to our well-being. Under the names of “fake news”, “conspiracy theories”, “betrayal”, they erode trust and compassion and wreak havoc in the hearts and minds and relationships of God’s children. And to use the well-known expression “they go viral”. St Paul in his letter to the Ephesians speaks about putting on, wearing, covering ourselves with truth, uprightness, eagerness to spread the Gospel, faith and salvation (Eph 6:14-17); protective and antidotal measures in the face of the threats that are very present in society.

Similarly, in his letter to the Colossians, he exalts the Christian to be “clothed in heartfelt compassion, in generosity and humility, gentleness and patience …

Over all these clothes put on love” (Col 3:12-14). The Christian’s disposition is not only to safeguard himself/herself but to be a presence, a living sign and an influence that would give increase to life-giving ways of being.

If only there were viruses that would spread cheer and goodwill and

infect many people.

At Christmas, we do see some signs, more than other times of the year, of the noble side of our humanity coming to the fore in gestures of charity, kindness, looking after the needy, expressions of family, tidying and cleaning our homes and embellishing them with lights and decorations. But Jesus’ coming to us was intended to be viral and infectious and to reach every heart. In his closing words at the Ascension, he commissioned his disciples to “Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Gospel to all creation” (Mk 16:15). He intended that we would become super spreaders, not merely engaging in ways to keep safe but reaching out, even at risk, to ensure that every person would celebrate the fullness of life through the Gospel, living in right relationship with God, with one another, with the whole of creation and living lives filled with compassion and forgiveness, trust and encouragement, in service and collaboration.

The year (and Christmas of) 2020 has been marked

by the event of COVID-19.

It will be remembered as were other years of global events marred by war or disease or failing economies. During the time of observing measures and living within a number of restrictions and limitations, one of the effects has been reflection; paying attention to and discerning the meaning of our lives in the narrowing of our accustomed freedom and function. In some instances, valuable and sometimes forgotten aspects of our being have surfaced and we look at ways of giving these more prominence on the way forward. Sometimes difficult issues about ourselves needing difficult decisions have come into view. Another wish to you in the spirit of Christmas is for a new time during which we can continue to build on the things that matter. The Magi after encountering the child Jesus “returned to their own country by a different way” (Mt2:12).

Reminiscing about Guyanese Christmas grass cut, curtains changed, table cover replaced, and mirrors cleaned.

New clothes were purchased. But one was lucky to get a new pair of shoes or a ‘yathing’ (no brand white sneakers).

For preparation of meals and snacks, I remember family members gathering in and around the kitchen, helping in the preparation of various foods and cakes.

The children competed to help with preparing the mix for the cake or bread or pastries (pine tart, black eye, and turn over or salara were popular) as we got to lick the basin after the mix was put in baking pans. And baking was done over a chulha (fireside) or an oil drum heated or a baking container heated with lit wood or coals. A few people had kerosene stoves; gas stoves came much later but through the 1990s. Few Guyanese had stoves. And fewer had fridge. Initially, a few Guyanese had kerosene fridge that was replaced with electric fridge during the late 1980s. But electric fridge was useless as black was a daily feature of life.

Even people with their own power generators could not find them useful as diesel or petrol was always in shortage during the 1970s thru

1992.

Although the cake was baked before, one could not get any till Christmas Day and mother shared them out or assigned a sister to distribute slices based on size of the brother or sister. One could not cut a piece without permission, Off course, as small kids, the children would steal a slice trying not to be caught. Or else licks.

The cake was a precious item, valued in gold because it was not easy to get flour or fruits to prepare it. Even sugar at times was in shortage. And water, we had to walk a mile to get a bucket of the precious liquid. Oh what a delightful aroma of freshly baked bread or cake or pasties wafting through the house or the neighborhood. It was quite tasty with melting margarine or a piece of Dutch Head or tip top cheese. It was washed down with pine drink or Kool Aid; soft drink was not always affordable.

As an NIS pensioner resident overseas, I use its website (which is very useless) which facilitates chatting with an agent. I tried on several occasions to chat with an agent to have my concerns addressed; unfortunately,

I reminisce with friends and family members of many fun activities of the holiday season during the 1960s and 1970s, the kinds of food and drinks that we enjoyed that came from what Burnham used to call “imperialist” (White man) countries. We reminisce of the jokes, of talking, of the laughter, of the fun we had, and of the hard times set upon us by Burnham dictatorship of having to cope with shortage of food and the onset of starvation. Traditions have been lost as a result of a terrible government.

My fondest memories from my childhood remain. I remember well the many things youngster like me did, playing with toys in the village, celebrating the season during the holiday break from school. We were contented with small things, even a cricket ball that we used to play during the three weeks break from studies. Those are unforgettable memories that today’s kids would not relate with.

It was a period of shortages of various items and of virtually no electricity or

In tough times, we looked for hope; something to hold on to, something to look forward to, something or someone to say to us, “It will get better.” And while COVID-19 is still among us, we look for hope in one of the most joyful seasons of the year.

The decorations, delicious meals, presents, surprises, love, laughter, time spent with our families, friends, and loved ones, and everything else that makes this season so magnificent is awaited by many, regardless of their respective religions and cultures.

In this respect, we, the Guyana Islamic Forum for Education, Peace and Religious Solidarity, the Electric Mosque’s Presentation of the Teachings of Islam, in asso-

Everyone, except for those in mourning over the loss of a loved one, was in a holiday mood – shopping to prepare special meals and baking cakes. I remember well fill out shopping lists or buyers.

I used to work at my aunt’s grocery during the late 1960s and thru high school before leaving the shores in 1977. I remember very well selling varied brands of wine imported from Madeira, peardrax, cydrax, imported dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, milk, apples, grapes, cheese, butter, and so many other items that were popular during the season. And then the food ban came. The Burnham government pro-

One of the main elements of this season is that it promotes undeniable feelings of oneness and harmony. It is that time of the year when everyone comes together and bids farewell to the closing year while praying for a year ahead that is prosperous, safe, healthy, and happy.

In this light, may all the joys of the festive season fill your hearts and homes.

As the year draws to a close, we pray for hope in a world darkened by the shadows of uncertainty and distress, caused by the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, we

One had to be contented with local goods (cassava, eddo, yam, long sweetie and chico brand sweets) and even these were in shortage, with some costlier than imports from white countries. This triggered the contraband trading that flourished across the three borders. Although flour, dhal, channa, alou, onion, garlic, spices, cherries, prunes, raisons, currents, citrons, spices, cheese, and so many other items were banned, they were smuggled across the river from Surinam. They were costly; those who could afford it purchase some of the items to have an enjoyable holiday.

Others, the very poor, had to make do without them, eating instead cassava pun as Burnham suggested. But even the poor wanted to eat a delicious cake made from cherries and other dried fruits or to eat a piece of (ice or Christmas) apple.

Long before Christmas, the house was clean spic and span. Floor was varnished, tree trunks whitewashed,

Hoyte said the country had no foreign money for imports. Toilet paper in shortage during the 1980s returned to the stores as did apples, grapes, matches, corned mutton, sardines, ketchup, and so many other items. The country came back to life thanks to the awakening of Hoyte that the ban was responsible for increasing rates of starvation. The Christmas spirit returned with the removal of the food ban. Of course since the restoration of democracy in 1992, times have changed. And technology has contributed to a changing nation.

I can look back with joy how traditions and customs, so simple, helped to foster so much love, peace and unity among people.

Christmas reminds us of value of family – AFC

T

he Alliance For Change (AFC) extends warmest Christmas greetings to all Guyana, especially our Christian brothers and sisters. This is a special time of year when we renew ties with family and demonstrate kindness to even the stranger in our midst. It is a time of peace and goodwill towards all mankind.

This Christmas season, the world is in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic. Guyana is no exception.

Of necessity, we must forego traditional large gath-

erings and get-togethers with friends and colleagues.

But it is also an opportunity to draw closer to family and close loved ones. This Christmas, we are reminded of the value of family and the importance of our personal health.

The lesson of Christmas and the celebration of the birth of the Messiah in Christian theology is one of hope and that through faith, there will be a better tomorrow. It is a lesson we need to be mindful of at all times.

On this Christmas Day, we remember the families of

Joel and Isaiah Henry and Haresh Singh. There is an empty chair at the dining table in those homes and in so many other homes where the families have lost a loved one. May we all find healing and comfort in God’s grace and mercy.

The Alliance For Change enjoins all Guyanese to be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas, to be hopeful of a better tomorrow and above all, to stay safe as we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. A blessed and peaceful Christmas to all!

T

he Christmas season is one that is most eagerly anticipated.

The season commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, who it is written laid down the fundamental tenets of Christianity. That religion, which is embraced by a large section of the world’s people, has survived many challenges and espouses peace, empathy for the poor, and goodwill towards men. Today as Christmas is once again celebrated, it is almost ironic that Christianity’s birth place has been caught in the throes of conflict and violence.

Of course, we cannot fail to recognise, that this year’s Christmas season has been unlike any in the recent past. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc globally and has significantly curtailed contemporary life. While mankind continues to face up to these

challenges, we see too Christianity’s principles of piety, charity, and assistance to the less fortunate shining through the dark clouds that have hovered over our world. This like the birth of Jesus Christ gives us hope that better days and times are ahead and that mankind, confronted by adversity, will not only rise but surmount the challenges in its way.

At the local level, Christmas has grown into a national observance with Guyanese from all walks of life participating. This, we hold, speaks to the tolerance and unity of our people which have been tested in recent times. Though challenges to national unity abound, we know that our people will not be led astray by those who seek to divide for their own ends.

This Christmas season sees greater optimism among the Guyanese people. Already, several of their

burdens have been lifted and efforts to lift them out of the hardships placed on them are continuing. It is this hopefulness that is synonymous with the Christmas season. And it reminds us that there is indeed light at the end of the dark tunnel.

It reaffirms that the people’s struggles were not in vain, and they have won out in the end.

It is with such thoughts in mind that the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) extends greetings to the Christian community and all Guyanese as we celebrate Christmas 2020. The Christmas season signals that the history-making 2020 is nearing an end. It also signals that better and brighter days are ahead as we see sustained efforts to advance development.

The celebration of Christmas 2020 embraced by so many presents the opportunity for togetherness to prevail over selfishness and political high-handedness; to set our nation on the path to harmony and to strive to ensure that peace and goodwill among men and women prevail.

he gospel of St Luke in the Holy Bible reminds us that on the eve of Jesus’s birth, angels proclaimed: “Glory to God in the highest and, on earth, peace, goodwill toward men.” The festival of Christmas, accordingly, celebrates the joyous message of “peace and goodwill’ to all mankind.

The passing year, 2020, unfortunately, witnessed a decrease in peace and the dissipation of goodwill in society. The tragic deaths of 162 citizens as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – the most grave public health crisis in living memory – has brought unhappiness to countless households and fostered an unhealthy environment in public places in the hinterland and on the coastland.

The dismissal of scores of public servants who suddenly were made jobless in

these difficult times amid the pandemic and high rates of inter-personal violence, especially against children and women, have undermined the essential conditions for a good standard of living.

Guyana needs to return to the path towards becoming a more compassionate country in which everyone, regardless of race, religion, region of residence, political persuasion, or social status could live in peace and share the season’s goodwill with each other.

Let us celebrate this festival of Christmas by recalling the biblical proclamation of “peace and goodwill’.

Let us celebrate our precious Guyaneseness by extending care and compassion within our families, communities, and country.

We extend greetings for a happy and healthy Christmas to all Guyanese.

AG questions whether Ramjattan’s Ministry used vehicles for intended purposes …as logbooks were not presented for audit

Q

uestions have been raised as to whether the then Public Security Ministry, headed by A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change’s (APNU/AFC) Khemraj Ramjattan, used over 30 vehicles for intended purposes.

This was after the Ministry failed to provide 33 logbooks of vehicles assigned to the Ministry to be examined during the audit.

According to the Auditor General’s 2019 Report, the Public Security Ministry, which has since been renamed Home Affairs Ministry, has 150 serviceable vehicles that require logbooks but with the 30plus books not presented for examination, they were unable to ascertain how the vehicles were used.

“In the circumstances, it could not be determined whether all journeys undertaken were authorised and were in the interest of the Ministry. A similar situation existed in 2018,” the AG report stated.

In the Head of the Budget Agency’s response to the AG’s findings, it was disclosed that there were actually 37 logbooks that were missing. However, the Head of the Budget Agency explained that four of those books were submitted to the auditors and assured that the remainders will also be handed over.

Nevertheless, similar situations were observed at the Guyana Prison Service (GPS). The report noted that a list of vehicles and equipment owned and operated by that Department was submitted on August 21, 2020, and an examination of that list revealed that there were more logbooks presented than what was on the vehicle’s listing presented.

As such, Auditor General Deodat Sharma said it could not be determined if the list submitted was a comprehensive one.

However, over at the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), it was highlighted that historical records were not presented for the vehicles controlled by that agency, which falls under the Ministry.

“As such, the Ministry is in breach of Section 26 of the Stores Regulations and Finance Secretary Circular ?. 3/2011 on the maintenance of Log Books for motor vehicles and the inventory of all plants and machinery,” the report stated.

In relation to these, the Head of the Budget Agency explained that the Fire Service is in the process of locating the Historical Records, while the Prison Service is currently reviewing the list and will be resubmitting same to the

Auditors shortly.

However, the Audit Office has since recommended that the Ministry comply fully with the Stores Regulations and Circulars.

Furthermore, the Ministry was also flagged for breaching Stores Regulations including at several of its sub-agencies.

At the Head Office’s Stores, both the Bin Cards and Stores Ledger were maintained by the Storekeeper contrary to Section 6 (2) of the Stores Regulations. Additionally, a Master Inventory was not maintained and there was no evidence that physical inspections and reconciliation were done.

The Head of the Budget Agency acknowledged the findings and indicated that measures will be taken to comply with the Stores Regulations in keeping

with the recommendation by the Audit Office that the Ministry comply with the Stores Regulations.

Meanwhile, the AG report also highlighted that the Stores at the Georgetown Prison was not properly maintained.

“Upon inspection in September 2020, it was observed that the stores were in a disorderly state,” the report detailed.

The Head of the agency explained that the Georgetown Prison Stores is currently under construction and upon completion, it will be organised in accordance with the Stores Regulations, as recommended.

At the Fire Service, it was pointed out that no Bin Cards were maintained, and the Stores was not kept clean, well ventilated, waterproof and secure and arranged in a manner that makes it easy to access and check. The report revealed too that unserviceable and serviceable stores were not kept separately and inflammable materials were also not kept apart from other stores.

The Head of the Budget Agency acknowledged the findings and indicated that measures will be taken to comply with the Stores Regulations, as recommended by the Audit Office.

Further, the AG also disclosed that during audit examinations of 123 Payment Vouchers totalling $315.864 million in respect of equipment and furniture purchased, it was found that 56 of those Payment Vouchers amount to a whopping $202.616 million had no stores documentation.

“In this circumstance, it could not be determined whether the items purchased were delivered,” the report detailed.

Again, the Audit Office recommended compliance with the Stores Regulations at all times to which the Head of Budget Agency indicated will be done.

Magistrate appeals dismissal of $50M lawsuit against DPP

W

ith the High Court dismissing his $50 million defamation lawsuit against Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, Senior Magistrate Alex Moore is now asking the Berbice Full Court to set aside the entire decision rendered by Justice Navindra Singh. In the proceedings filed on Wednesday by his lawyer, Arudranauth Gossai, Magistrate Moore is contending that Justice Singh made several errors in law when he struck out the lawsuit on December 2, 2020.

Against this backdrop, he is asking that the decision of the Judge be set aside and that the matter be reinstated in the High Court to take its normal course in accordance with the Civil Procedure Rules 2016. In July 2020, Magistrate Moore instituted a claim for the tort of defamation against Ali-Hack. Moore alleged that he was defamed in a letter

authored by the DPP dated December 5, 2019.

The letter was titled “Re: Conduct of Magistrate Alex Moore in the charge of the Police vs Marcus Bisram for the offence of murder, contrary to Common Law”. Magistrate Moore claimed that the letter was falsely and maliciously written by the DPP and sent to acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Yonette CummingsEdwards and acting Chief Justice Roxane George.

He said that the letter suggested that he was not acting impartially in the matter, and, was, therefore unfit to sit as a Magistrate in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) proceedings at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

Magistrate Moore, in court documents, noted that the contents of the letter have greatly injured his character, credibility, and reputation. He further noted that it has subjected him to public ridicule, causing him to suffer mental anguish,

distress, and depression.

In August 2020, the DPP asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit on the ground that it disclosed no reasonable reason for bringing the claim.

Ali-Hack, through Senior Counsel Robin Stoby, Senior Counsel Jamela Ali and former Solicitor General Kim Kyte-Thomas, argued that the case was scandalous, frivolous, vexatious, an abuse of the court process, and seeks to obstruct the just disposal of the proceedings.

Ali-Hack submitted that Magistrate Moore could not sue her in her personal capacity since the letter refers to her acting in her professional capacity as Director of Public Prosecutions and did not constitute or display nor intend any malice against him.

der Articles 116 and 187 of the Constitution for which she would be patently entitled to the protection of Sections 8 and 4 of the Justice Protection Act, and the benefits of the operation of Section 3(4) of the State Liability and Proceedings Act. Moreover, the DPP contended that Magistrate Moore’s case is contrary to public policy by seeking through defamatory claims to intimidate or prevent the process of complaints against the conduct of Magistrates, and particularly concerning disciplinary considerations by members of the Judicial Service Commission of the actions of any member of the Magistracy, including him.

In his judgement, Justice Singh upheld the DPP’s argument that the claim brought

by Magistrate Moore was scandalous, frivolous, vexatious, an abuse of the court process, seeks to obstruct the just disposal of the proceedings and disclosed no reasonable reason for bringing the claim. The Judge also upheld the argument that the office of the DPP is protected under the State Liability and Proceeding Act and the Justice Protection Act, concerning the execution of its functions.

Also, Justice Singh held that the lawsuit was in breach of Section 8 (1) of the Justice Protection Act as it was instituted more than seven months after Magistrate Moore became aware of the letter. The Judge also held that the claim was also in breach of Section 8 (2) of the Justice Protection Act since Magistrate Moore failed to give the DPP notice in writing of his intention to institute the claim.

Among other things, Magistrate Moore in his grounds of appeal to the Full Court submitted that Justice Singh erred or misdirected himself on the law when he found that the DPP was protected by the Justice Protection Act when this was a question of fact to be determined at a trial and is not an issue which could be resolved on a strikeout application.

“The learned Trial Judge erred in law and/or misguided himself on the law when he found at page 2 of his judgement that the Appellant [Magistrate Moore] clearly accepted that the Respondent [DPP] was acting in her capacity as DPP when this was a question of fact which could not be resolved without a trial and the taking of evidence,” Magistrate Moore argued.

The Senior Magistrate further contended that Justice Singh also erred in law and misdirected himself on the law when he awarded $200,000 in court costs against him when the maximum costs on a strikeout application is $30,000 in accordance with the Civil Procedure Rules 2016. A date for hearing in this matter is likely to be fixed in the new year.

...Christmas rom our perspective on Earth, the alignment, earlier this week, of the two largest planets in our Solar System - Saturn and Jupiter - making them appear to be one massive “star” - was taken as a good omen by some. Your Eyewitness was going to say “celebrating today”, but hit the backspace button to substitute that term with “commemorating today”, since he isn’t so sure whether this COVID-19 pandemic would curtail the typical Guyanese celebrations, which of course are mostly about eating and drinking and a desire to “be merry” by one and all. Because of our British colonial history, Christmas is celebrated by the members of all the different religions - and even with greater “wokeness” in the present generation, that tradition still holds.

Of course, we’ve put our special interpretations on some of the British traditions - with, for instance, the garlic pork of our Portuguese citizens joining the black cake derived from the English dessert plum pudding” in being washed down with copious quantities of our good, old Caribbean rum!! Two slices of an authentic Guyanese black cake and you don’t need to imbibe anything from the bottle to feel tipsy!

Your Eyewitness had reason to be in Georgetown earlier this week, and if the traffic in and out of the city is any indication of the intensity of the shopping, he predicts not much will be different today than before COVID! Now, your Eyewitness doesn’t want to be a party pooper, but he hopes we’ll be prudent and observe all the protocols we’ve been bombarded with since March. So how exactly can we do this? Well, we can have friends and relatives over who can assure us they have no COVID symptoms and they’re coming directly from their homes. And then he’ll have them wash their hands at his door, just to make sure they don’t bring in anything other than their gifts!

And wear masks that they’ll pull down discretely for every mouthful of the goodies from his well laden table.

Now, you see how awkward this can be - if not downright unrealistic? So, actually, he isn’t having ANYONE over, but his kids - who live with him, in any case, and have their protocols down pat. He’ll send around slices of the black cake the missus is traditionally famous for in his circle - and make some calls via WhatsApp to his close friends and family members.

What he’s NOT going to do is give a free pass to that sneaky virus! …that NCM Naughty! Naughty! Naughty! That’s all your Eyewitness can say to Charrandas Persaud for his surprise appearance in Parliament - albeit at the ACCC - on the second anniversary of his famous “Yes...yes...yes” of Dec 21, 2018. If the “shot heard around the world” was the one in Lexington that launched the American Revolution, then those three monosyllabic responses to the Clerk, who was asking how he voted on the NCM, was the stake driven into the hearts of the PNC, which eventually ousted them from the Government.

And they have never - and will never - ever forgive him for it!! After a momentary acknowledgement

Police spent $42.5M to store bodies, but no death records found – AG Report

he Audit Office of Guyana has flagged the payment of more than $42 million by the Guyana Police Force to a funeral home for storage of bodies after no records were found of any death.

In the Auditor General’s Report for the 2019 fiscal year, it was highlighted that the Police Force spent $155.610 million in expenses for the handling and transporting of dead persons. These payments were made to funeral homes and the outer-town Policing Divisions.

The report pointed out that of the $155.6 million, some $42.565 million (including $851,300 withholding tax to Guyana Revenue Authority) in payments were made to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Crematorium, located in Le Repentir, Georgetown, on four contracts for services rendered.

These payments were made in July 2018.

However, the Auditor General report disclosed that “no approval was seen to pay unpaid accounts from current funds. A request for Supplementary Provision which was approved for $48.398 million was attached to the Payment Voucher.

However, the description for purpose and justification of the Supplementary Provision give no indication that these payments were for prior years and were unpaid. Further… the description on the contracts provided no information on the services rendered by the funeral home.”

Further, the Auditor General outlined that an examination of the Payment Vouchers and supporting documentation revealed no evidence that Tender Board Procedures were followed and no approval was seen from any Tender Board for these awards. Additionally,

it was noted too that a petty contract was used for the preparation of these contracts.

“There was no request for payment from the funeral home for the outstanding claims and an inspection of the four invoices from the funeral home revealed insufficient details in relation to the storage and handling of the deceased. Two of the invoices for the amounts of $16.480 million and $18.755 million; respectively, were not signed by the authorising officer of the funeral home,” the report also revealed.

According to the Audit Office, checks carried out on the invoices revealed a column “removal date” with dates ranging from 2015 to 2017.

“It could not be determined what this date represents and how long the remains/deceased were stored at the funeral home.

Further, the invoices had cost associated for transportation, two handling cost, cold storage, post-mortem and total cost. Under cold storage, a sum was stated; however, it could not be determined how this sum was arrived at since no rate per days and the number of days were stated on the invoices,” detailed the AG report.

According to the invoices, the report noted, the police stations that requested assistance for storage

and other related death services were Bartica, Region Seven (CuyuniMazaruni); Mahdia, Region

Eight (Potaro-Siparuni); Cove and John, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica); Aranka and Eteringbang –

both in Region Seven.

“However, no extracts or reports were seen from the Death Occurrence Books from these stations to support the information recorded on the invoices. As such, the completeness, accuracy and validity of the amounts of $42.565 million expended for services rendered for storage and handling of the deceased could not be determined,” the AG report underscored.

In response to the findings by the Auditor General, the Head of the Budget Agency explained that a request will be made to have

the Divisional Commanders send copies of the extract from the Death Occurrence Book.

Nevertheless, the Audit Office recommended that the Guyana Police Force comply with the Procurement Act and Section 10 (3) of the Fiscal Management and Accountability (FMA) Act, whereby the Head of the Budget Agency shall comply with all relevant provisions of this Act, the regulations, finance circulars and any other instructions in relation to the proper management of the financial resources of the State.

In the world of sport, there are many names that could be linked in that way to a particular discipline.

But when you think of badminton, only one name comes to mind: Ramdhani.

In the humblest opinions, the Ramdhanis exemplify what it means to be passionate about a sport and oftentimes, from that passion comes success in every venture.

The father, Gokarn Ramdhani, began playing the sport in 1980 while attending Queen’s College, where he fell in love with the sport.

“I started to play and it somehow attracted me. I then Priyanna Ramdhani

started t o compete and after winning the National Junior Champions, I continued to go further

and got more seriously involved,” the older Ramdhani said, reflecting on his earliest days in the sport.

While he went on to achieve much greater things, like becoming the President of the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA), Head Coach of the Olds’ College Broncos (Canada), Guyana’s delegate to the World Badminton Federation and Second Vice President of the Central America & Caribbean Badminton Associations, the reminder of Gokarn’s beginning still lingers in the Queen’s College auditorium, where badminton courts are painted on the ground and refreshed ever so often.

How is that important? Well, more often than not, the beginning of a story tells a lot about what the resolution may look like. In this case, the humble beginning at QC has spiralled into producing two of the most decorated badminton players Guyana has ever seen.

eventually got on court to have some fun.

They both had a shuttle hanging on their crib mobile,” the elder Ramdhani fondly recollected.

So, what is the family dynamic like, having your father as coach and your mother as part of the sport’s administration?

“Coaching them was like coaching any other players. They had no special treatment, but judging from their natural ability, I knew they would have gone far.

They also went through all the disciplinary actions when needed as the rest of the team, sometimes even harder,” the elder Ramdhani answered.

For 18-year-old Priyanna, who can still be considered the reigning junior sportswoman of the year (since the awards were not hosted in 2020), the mentorship from her father was a source of comfort and familiarity.

She stated, “Having my dad as a coach is great, because he trained me for most of my life and I feel more comfortable training with him, because he’s my father.

He pushes me to do my best and after practice, he tells me what I’ve been doing wrong and how I can improve. He knows how to separate being a dad and a coach and that is very important. I enjoy being coached by my father.”

Tails of Hope, Rosewood Foundation collaborating to provide a voice for the voiceless

T

he five freedoms of animal welfare stipulate that an animal should be free from hunger and thirst; free from pain and discomfort; free from pain, injury or disease; have the ability to freely express normal behaviour, and be free from fear and distress.

Those are the five freedoms that every animal lover and pet parent should know and live by. It is also the core principles that guide the advocacy of Shari Rodrigues DaSilva and her team at Animal Rescue Adoption and Protection Society (ARAPS) – Tails of Hope non-profit organisation.

ARAPS – Tails of Hope was started in November of 2019 by DaSilva, who has spent much of her life advocating for proper care and treatment of animals. In its short time in existence, the organisation has been able to make significant headway in educating people about the proper treatment of animals as well as addressing the needs of animals.

However, the journey is not one of a single organisation, rather ARAPS – Tails of Hope has been actively collaborating with the Guyana Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (GSPCA) and the Rosewood Foundation among others. <<<Guyana Times>>> was able to catch up with DaSilva and Donna Lam of the Rosewood Foundation a few weeks ago while they were out on a vaccination campaign in Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

“In November … we celebrated our one-year anniversary and we have been able to make a huge impact. We have been able to collaborate with organisations such as the Rosewood Foundation, the GSPCA and other activists. We collaborate to minimise, control certain diseases or outbreaks such as parvovirus, distemper virus, which is prevalent on the East Coast (Demerara) areas and West Coast (Demerara),” DaSilva said.

In addition to that, ARAPS has been actively involved in controlling the stray animal population by spaying, neutering and rehoming animals that were abandoned.

While she has only been formally advocating for proper treatment of animals for a few years, DaSilva has been an animal lover all her life. Her parents and siblings are all animal lovers and she would capitalise on that when it comes to raising funds for her work.

About three years ago, when Lam launched the Rosewood Foundation, DaSilva joined with her where they worked, and she recounted that the work of Lam and other activists such as Syeada Manbodh, Noreen Gaskin, and veterinarians like Dr Steve Surujbally and Dr Nardeo Bassoodeo have inspired her to do more.

From there, she founded ARAPS – Tails of Hope and now she is able to spay and neuter thousands of animals while providing shelter for hundreds.

“The major accomplishments have been so far, our organisation alone – ARAPS – Tails of Hope, we have been able to spay and neuter over 700 animals in just a year. We have three shelters and we’ve been able to rehome over 200 animals so far in just a year. It wasn’t a singleman team; we’ve been able to do this thanks to other organisations,” she related.

ARAPS would respond to reports and go on rescue missions and if those are too much for them to handle, then the GSPCA is called in or other activists. The assistance is not just for cats and dogs, but all animals. DaSilva explained that just recently they were able to rescue a goat.

“I enjoy rehoming animals and

seeing pet parents happy.

If they’re not happy and if they haven’t had the right match with certain animal, we work with them, we exchange the animal and we keep in communication and they literally become part of our family. So, we gain new friends all the time,” she said.

With DaSilva’s kind of work, the challenges are many and would range from hostile pet parents to the lack of financial resources. Pets are expensive and many persons are not ready to stand the financial obligation and would abandon their animals or leave them to suffer. These situations make the work of ARAPS all so important.

DaSilva would spend hours driving around to answer reports or pick up abandoned animals without being paid a cent. Why does she do it then? Well, it is the love for animals that fuels her passion.

“I have experienced many challenges in getting donations, because you know COVID and everything…whenever we need donations, we will go on Facebook and make our plea and whatever persons can donate, they will. Sometimes,

many times, it’s out of pocket and friends and family, I will show up at them. It’s a challenge at times,” she said.

Meanwhile, Lam of the Rosewood Foundation said one of their biggest challenges is getting equipment from donors into the country. She explained that their work is sometimes affected because of the hefty sums that have to be paid when they are bringing equipment in. “ The

Rosewood Foundation deals with spaying and neutering animals, but you cannot control the pet population unless you educate the owners of these pets. People might want to adopt one or more animals and we cannot stop them, but we have to educate them that when these animals are old enough, they need to bring these animals back to us. So, we make it our duty to call these people to get these animals back to us to get them spayed and neutered.

“We have to constantly remind people that vaccination is important. We are trying to curb a distemper outbreak right now and it breaks our heart almost daily to see animals having to be put down, because distemper is like 98 per cent fatal and it is something that we have to do and I don’t think people understand that we are not being paid to do this. We are doing this, because this is our love, this is our

obsession, this is our passion.

We want to see better in Guyana,” the activist said.

Lam started the Rosewood Foundation about three years ago, but has been rescuing animals for many years now. While growing up in Suriname, she would often hide kittens in her backpacks and under her clothes while returning from school and would guilt-trip her parents into letting her keep them.

When she returned to Guyana, she saw the need for an organisation to aid in the protection of animals, but had very little knowledge of how to go about starting one. She would eventually meet Ileana Bernard – an Ecuadorian working at an animal shelter – who guided her through the process.

“When I started the Rosewood Foundation, three years ago, everybody told me that it couldn’t be done. People don’t love animals, they won’t support me, they won’t care and now from the Rosewood Foundation, we have ARAPS – our sister organisation that we work very closely with.

“We get help from the GSPCA and we get help from Humane Society International and together we have been able to not only spay and neuter in huge campaigns, but to have vaccination drives in various parts of the country which is unheard

of and we started a trend and now we have people constantly messaging us. So, these things are catching on and it shows us that people love their animals, they want to do better, but maybe they don’t know how. So, our first mission is to educate the public and as long as you can educate people and teach them what is the right thing to do towards their animals, they would do it,” Lam said.

The work of ARAPS and the Rosewood Foundation along with the many activists and other animal welfare organisations is needed not only to keep checks and balances but to also give a voice to the voiceless.

“All animals have feelings, they feel pain. Just take care of your animals. If you can’t afford a pet, don’t take on a pet. Never ever, ever give a pet as a gift, because people adopt kittens and puppies, but they don’t want them when they get older and then they put the animal out on the road. You need to be able to take care and guarantee them the five freedoms of animal welfare,” Lam advised.

he COVID-19 pandemic has left no one unscathed in its wake, including the performing artistes. With the risks and social-distancing requirements, creative performers have had to adapt to a new, more digital world.

One such person is Gavin Mendonca, who is the Programme Director of the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival. Mendonca, an artiste himself, who combines local music with a unique blend of rock, has had to ensure the festival changes with the times.

In previous times, when the festival was held at Rock View Lodge located at Annai in Region Nine, in 2014 and 2015, it featured a

bonfire flickering in the background, roasting meat, and live music.

The show was held in Georgetown in 2017 and 2019, with Manari Ranch, another Region Nine location, being the venue in 2018.

According to Mendonca, the show was supposed to have been held at Manari in 2020, away from the busy city and ironically, technology… but that was before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, bringing them even closer to the technology they tried to wean themselves off of.

“Due to COVID-19, these plans were all scrapped. Life for musicians, creatives, and festival goers alike was turned upside down, and this festival, along with every other major social event around the entire world, was just shut down,”

Mendonca explained.

“What a blow to society that has been – since events like festivals serve many purposes especially when it comes to fostering community, preserving culture and the various art forms, as well as offering people a human experience like none other," he mused.

With the option to host a live festival this year out of the window, Mendonca noted that the festival team decided not to let the year end without doing anything. And so, the virtual Rupununi Music and Arts Festival 2020, held under the theme “Memories of Years Past”, was born.

The show was held on Sunday and featured performances from Guyana’s own Dave Martins with his evergreen track “Not A Blade Ah Grass”, Tujay the Poet, Marva Newton, Buxton Fusion, the Kanaima Dancers and the Mighty Gabby of Barbados, among others.

Moving forward, Mendonca noted that they have plans to host their next virtual session on February 15, 2021, in a bid to celebrate the seven-year anniversary of the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival.

Carolling with the creatives

Meanwhile, the Christmas season saw local talent show “Spice and Clove” rolling out their third show of the year. Born in May out of a necessity to keep creative talents engaged during the pandemic, “Spice and Clove” held its “Carolling with the Creatives” show on Saturday.

Saturday’s show, which was streamed live on Facebook, saw singing performances from Shania Sampson, Synnovea Maynard, Olivia Morris, Crystal Van Diomen, Nyana Evans, and Onika George, as well as rapping from Josiah Mentore, aka Ele Ment, and “Bear Sawse”.

Meanwhile, Joel Webster, Nicosie Xophe, Terrence Issacs, Nia Williams, and The Shady Poet contributed to the poetry aspect of the show, while “Tujay” performed a comedy sketch for the online audience.

In an interview with Guyana Times, “Spice and Clove” founder Gracie Hutson, aka “The Olive” (her stage name), spoke of the strides the show has made throughout the year in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it evolved into a Black Lives Matter-themed event. "”Spice and Clove” started as a result of the pandemic and fans of the arts and creatives (mainly them) were starving for shows. They tagged me and Renata (Burnette) in a status asking us to put something together and after some nudging from Renata, I came up with the concept.

"The first edition which was just "Spice and Clove" was supposed to be a one-time event, but people started swarming and asking us to make it a regular thing. So, “Spice and Clove” Black Lives Matter was created around the time the Henry boys were brutally murdered,” she said.

The show had numerous positives. Hutson described how there were people on the show who had to muster the courage to perform for the first time and who have since embarked on a journey to develop their craft.

The show also allowed these creatives a chance to both practise and network with other creatives.

She pointed out that even now, a number of these creatives who met for the first time on “Spice and Clove” are now collaborating for upcoming projects.

Challenges & opportunities

Making “Spice and Clove” a virtual reality did not come without its challenges. According to Hutson, poor Internet and other technical issues were some of the main challenges. There were times when devices would die in the middle of performances or the Internet would freeze up which was a distraction from the show.

“Additionally, the audio and sound quality sometimes cause viewership to go down, because they can't hear or see the person properly,” “The Olive” explained to this publication.

After the challenges the show has faced and overcame, Hutson has big plans for “Spice and Clove” come 2021.

“There will be more virtual and when (if) the pandemic is over soon, we'll be at a physical location. (We’re) currently working on making “Spice and Clove” a company for creatives to train, promote, and network,” “The Olive” revealed.

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for the creative pool of Guyana. It has indeed been a tough year for creatives. But they deserve the credit for pulling out all the stops to still bring entertainment in the Christmas season.

resident Dr Irfaan Ali on Wednesday presented a cheque to the Fallen Heroes Foundation during their annual remembrance ceremony, to the tune of $1 million.

At the Police Officers’ Mess Hall, Eve Leary, the Head of State made the contribution as he empathised with the families of those who served Guyana. During the presentation, the funds were handed over to eight families as part of the annual activity.

While the President acknowledged that no amount of platitudes and expressions of gratitude would be enough, he announced that the Government will do its best to ensure that the educational needs of the children of fallen heroes are taken care of. There are currently 18 children from the families of fallen heroes. He pledged to provide any assistance needed for examinations or through university.

“It is always going to be a painful exercise reflecting on those Guyanese who gave the ultimate in service to their country, which is their life. There is nothing that we can do or say that will replace that ultimate sacrifice, the only thing we can do is in faith and through prayers to ask that they inherit a greater and larger life for the sacrifice they made on this earthly journey,” he shared.

He added that they represent the honour and dignity of the uniform they wear to fulfil their oath of office.

More importantly, he said their families are aware of the dangers and still support their efforts.

“When these sacrifices are made it is not only for the officer that leaves home, it is for the families who share their love, it is for the mother, the wife, the children, the grandparents who share their loved ones with the rest of society and the country in service. In my estimation, you too are part of the heroic effort, you too should be celebrated because you too as a family gave to the country,” the President told the gathering.

The Head of State also used the opportunity to recognise the members of the foundation for their efforts in ensuring that the families of those that gave their lives in sacrifice for the country are taken care of and that the memories of the heroes are honoured.

“For this, I must say you are doing these families and your country the greatest of service and I thank you very much. I want to assure this group that you can count on me to work closely with you, you can count on me to support you and the families.”

Commissioner of Police, Nigel Hoppie also acknowledged that the Force in collaboration with the Cops and Faith Community Network in November of 2015 established the foundation that will forever benefit the families of ranks who would have died in the line of duty.

The Foundation is the brainchild of former Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud. When it was launched, it was the first of its kind in the Caribbean.

Holiday cheer

President Ali continued spreading the holiday spirit and cheer on Wednesday, with a special celebration for children from orphanages at State House.

The children were treated to toys, carolling and other Christmas items.

Those who were part of the festivities included the Sophia Care Centre, Red Cross Convalescent Home, Mahaica Children’s Home, St Ann’s Girls Orphanage and Joshua’s Children Home.

Speaking to the youths, the Head of State encouraged them to set goals and aspire for a good life, regardless of their circumstances.

He reminded that children are the future of the country.

“You are indeed the future of our country. I also want all of you to know that regardless of where we grow up, which region we are form, regardless of our circumstances, we must all aspire for the greatest of things. You must aspire for every aspect of life. Do not

Meanwhile, some 22 tablets were donated to the senior secondary students, while another three was given to each home for educational purposes. The Guyana Police Force would have also made some contributions towards this worthy cause.

he Christmas season is seen as one filled with merry-making, positivity, and happiness as it brings us closer to our family, friends and loved ones and so we celebrate goodness, cheer, and gratitude for all things wholesome in our life.

However, the holidays are infamous for overindulgence.

General rationales such as “I’ll get back on track in January”, “It will be my New Year’s resolution” are all phrases we are familiar with when we fall off the health and fitness wagon

during the festive season. The year 2020 in particular has brought its own challenges, making life a matter of survival. Those of us who are around for the festive season would have survived COVID-19, which has been with us for the entire year, so let us not “get run over by a reindeer” this Christmas.

Let us continue to focus on the importance of being healthful during the holidays and while this may prove to be difficult, here are a few tips on how we can have a healthy Christmas:

Remember COVID-19 is still here

The Christmas period is the highlight of the social calendar filled with lots of activities such as gift shopping, family events, office parties, etcetera. Let us challenge ourselves with technology so that we can make the togetherness a virtual one instead of social gatherings. Let us protect the people in our household by celebrating with them instead of inviting relatives and friends or responding to invitations. Try your best to practise all COVID-19 safety measures: wash your hands often, wear face masks, and practise social distancing as much as possible.

Avoid a Christmas stuffing

Eat slowly and have normalsized meals. You can also have smaller helpings of your favourite foods and give yourself the 20 minutes allotted time for your “I’m full” signal to kick in before you revisit the kitchen for seconds.

“Cook from the heart for the heart” when making holiday meals. Go lightly on the salt, butter, shortening, red meats, and sugar in your recipes.

Lighten up on the spirits to be in a good holiday spirit!

Excess alcohol impairs judgement and can contribute to embarrassing situations, leaving one’s character to be questioned. It also has hidden calories, leading to weight gain.

Having a meal before you have alcohol will slow the absorption of alcohol in your system and counteract the dehydrating effects of booze. Spacing alcoholic drinks by consuming non-alcoholic beverages and water is also a great way to avoid excess consumption.

Laugh About”. Try to maintain fitness. We can learn from some people from some cultures who would have an early dinner and then take a walk after that meal.

Go walking, jogging or put some music on and dance and burn the extra calories. Not forgetting that exercise helps us to sleep well and boost our moods.

Be careful when driving

Please note that excessive alcohol drinking, use of illegal drugs, reckless driving, and our rainy weather lead to many fatal accidents on our roads during this time of year. Let’s practise road safety and mindfulness with our fellow drivers and pedestrians. It is also important to remember that candles are still considered an open flame and to turn off your added lights before you turn in at night. I have it on good authority that Santa always has a flashlight so he doesn’t need your Christmas tree lights when he comes.

Be conscious of potential falls and other injuries when decorating

Christmas doesn’t mean that you should stop exercising and sit on the couch watching reruns of “Home Alone” or “Nothing to

Food poisoning is also very popular during this time and so let’s make sure we store our food and reheat them adequately before consuming them.

Finally, be absolutely sure that the toys you choose as gifts for children are appropriate for their age to avoid toy-related injuries and choking hazards.

Don’t stress

Not being able to celebrate in your usual manner of togetherness can have an emotional impact, but as Andy Williams sings, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”, so lighten up, have a sense of humour, be of good cheer. Be realistic, manage your expectations and be mindful.

Practising gratitude helps to lower anxiety and also helps us in dealing with day-to-day pressure, for example, count your blessings by accepting each day as a gift and be grateful for the chance to have yet lived another day in this beautiful world.

On the other hand, Narayan (former junior sportsman of the year) answered, “I couldn’t imagine playing badminton without my dad. He has been my coach as long as I can remember and without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

If a closer look is taken at the siblings’ view of the support they received throughout their competition lives, it can be inferred that they are very appreciative of those circumstances.

“Having my family as a support system in playing badminton is all an athlete can ask for….my family’s approval and willingness to assist me financially, etc, play a big role for me to be successful in my badminton career. It also makes it easier when I have the support from my family because they would understand what I would need and how they can help me in the best way possible.

I am grateful to have them by my side because they encourage me to give it my all on and off court,” Priyanna shared with Guyana Times.

Meanwhile, Narayan’s views were expectedly very similar as he disclosed, “It’s been really good, because in my family badminton has always been the priority and my parents always pushed me to be the best player I can be, as well as badminton giving me the opportunity to study and train in Canada.”

As sibling rivalries go, a certain level of competitiveness would be expected from the two former students of Marian Academy.

“Yes, sometimes I tried to be more competitive playing against my brother in a fun way, but playing alongside each other I was not competitive. As I grew and matured throughout the years, I understood that he’s my brother and I will support him no matter what. If he achieves more prizes than me, it would not affect me at all and I will support him, because we both worked hard to become what we are now and we would forever support each other because we are family,” Priyanna candidly shared.

Her older brother expressed similar sentiments, highlighting that it was more fun than competitive on most occasions.

“Not necessarily because when she wins it’s like I am winning as well; also, my sister is younger than me, so I don’t think she can beat me anytime soon,” he joked.

While Emily Ramdhani, their mother, did not coach, she was always actively involved in their upbringing in the sport.

While being involved in the administrative arm at the GBA, she never missed an opportunity to be courtside in support of her husband and children. This practice, for the siblings, has been the source of a number of affectionate memories of their competition days.

“Four or five years ago, I played my dad in the doubles finals of a local tournament in Guyana and it was all over in the papers as well as people coming out to watch the match. It was a cool experience; my sister and my mom watched alongside all the other badminton players, but, of course, my dad lost and I beat him,” Narayan told this publication.

“There are a lot of good memories I have of my family while playing/competing. One that stands out most to me is that every time before a tournament, my mother and my father would buy me a Gatorade and make sure I eat properly and make sure I am okay, and my brother would help me to warm up before I play, because I can be nervous sometimes before the competition. The little things tend to mean much more at times, but having your family support you at all costs is amazing,” the youngest Ramdhani divulged.

For mom and dad, it is always a proud moment seeing their children succeed, but the ultimate goal remains – the Olympics.

“My emotions seeing them succeed is something personal as I was a player and in my days, we could not get the opportunities that they get now to take their game to the highest level possible and also my dream is to see Guyana badminton at the Olympics. So far, I have taken our sport to every level leading to the Olympics,” Gokarn Ramdhani shared.

The Olympics are set for the summer of 2021 and with the Ramdhani siblings actively competing at their respective schools, Narayan at the King’s University (Eagles) and Priyanna at the Olds’ College (Broncos) in Canada, they are on track for Olympic qualification.

The shuttle remains in their court, with a healthy dose of family support. After all, as the saying goes, “The family that plays together stays together.”

Smith told Guyana Times that she was encouraged and motivated to create floral arrangements by a friend who is also involved in the trade.

That was approximately 10 years ago, and she admitted that her passion for the craft continues to grow as she keeps improving.

“My friend, Robin Grant, she gave me the motivation to start. She said, ‘man, why you don’t start? Just try’. I tried one and I got through. Then she said, ‘You should just try and do it and this could be something that you could make money from like for Valentine’s and Christmas’,” the florist related as she reminisced on how she was encouraged to pursue floristry.

“So, when I first started, I would do it and if I see like I wasn’t getting through with one, I would go to her. When I go, she would say, ‘Hey, sit down, but I’m not doing it for you. I’ll show you how, but you’re doing it for yourself’,” she continued.

It was this bit of encouragement and tough love that Smith noted set her on the path to designing her own unique creations. Also a businesswoman by trade, she said this became an avenue to supplement her income. She has been depending on her craft to enhance her income over the past 10 years.

“Year come, year go, I got

better,” she related.

She would take her creations and display them at her stall at the Mackenzie Arcade. She also works according to customers’ orders.

Smith explained, however, that for her to focus on creating, her mind would first have to be at ease. Though she has never attended floral design classes, Smith said she would create designs based on her own inspirational thoughts.

“I said, you know what, I can be creative. Instead of buying flowers, I started getting these unique things like water lily nuts; then I would get pointers and pine cones. So I would get these things, dry them and spray them in different colours.

If I get a bottle, I would think about all that I could do to design it – put some stones, do something to make it look decorative,” she related.

And it’s all about making her customers feel comfortable with the designs, as she explained she would work to ensure that they are 100 per cent satisfied. As such, she would also offer specific advice on what might be suitable, based on how they choose to design their space.

“I would say to them next year is another year and I would want you to come back. I need my customers to come back, so I always try to put them first and make sure they’re happy ... there are some customers that don’t like flowers. They prefer the natural-looking arrangements. One time I took the dry shavings from wood and made roses with them. I used the fat end of the pointer to make the sticks for it. I use the small coconuts and dry, spray or polish them,” Smith said.

She explained that utilising natural materials for her arrangements is also a way to save. She would buy flowers wholesale from Georgetown, as she noted they are more affordable when purchased there. While she makes florals all year round, orders increase around the holidays and special

occasions. Smith also makes special gifts for occasions like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Additionally, she makes holiday door wreaths and lately added

cement vases to her

creations.

Smith said to this day she could still count on her friend for advice and she would also share her design ideas with

her. This, she said, she is quite grateful for.

“She never one time pushed me aside. She always help me and I thank God for that. She’s a very good friend of mine, very rare you would find a friend like that,” she said.

Smith notes so far, by God’s grace, she has been successful and continues to work on perfecting her craft.

She is encouraging young people to invest in a trade, even if you have little finances, and to be a motivation for others.

ealthcare capacity in the Region Nine community of Karasabai, (Upper TakutuUpper Essequibo) has been boosted with a $16.7 million ambulance which was delivered on Thursday.

The ambulance has been customised to traverse the hilly terrain there, and can transport patients to Lethem if necessary.

Presentation of this ambulance to the Karasabai community was made at a simple ceremony hosted at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown. Minister Dr Frank Anthony said the donation was facilitated through a Government of Guyana/Inter-American Development Bank- funded Maternal Child Health Improvement loan programme. The Gy$1.6 billion (US$8M) programme aims

to reduce maternal, perinatal and neonatal deaths in Guyana by improving the quality of care in Regions Three, Four and Nine.

“The type of equipment we have in the ambulance goes beyond the things we have here on the coastland, because it has space for the patient, it has space for the medical personnel to work with the patient while they are en route,” the Minister said.

Minister Anthony said Region Nine is being used as a “pilot site” for the IDBfunded project. He noted that enhancing health services in Region Nine is a substantial part of the programme.

“This is a very good project, and we want to assure the people of Region Nine, and other regions where we are working, that we are going to expand these ser-

vices and make it safer for mothers during pregnancy; but, also, the investments we’re making would help the broader population in the region.”

Region Nine Agriculture Officer Mr Darren Halley received the ambulance on behalf of the Region. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its continuous commitment to improving the healthcare sector, and gave assurances that the ambulance would enhance health services in the Region, particularly in the rural communities.

The modified ambulance is outfitted with all the amenities necessary to safely transport patients to healthcare facilities. It also has a ventilator on board, an emergency bag, and other essential equipment, including for neonatal patients.

o h a m e d ’ s Enterprise and Precious Angels on Thursday collaborated to give back to the community, by distributing monetary donations to eight charities and non-governmental organisations.

At City Mall, a simple ceremony was facilitated to hand over the cheques, valued at $125,000 each. The recipients included the Guyana Society for the Blind, Shaheed’s Orphanage, Joshua House Children’s Centre, Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Centre, Dharam Shala among others.

One of the representatives, Nizam Zaman, told this publication, “This exercise is geared at helping the poor. The management of Mohamed’s Enterprise is always into helping those less fortunate and they’re partnering with Precious Angels Charity. This is a yearly assistance offered to those who are rendering assistance and

making a home for the less fortunate and those in need.”

Meanwhile, one of the founders of Precious Angels, Aisha Khan, added that they would have raised funds for this gesture through a fundraising activity last month.

“We hosted a barbecue back in November in [the] name of the Precious Angels Charity and we raised money. We were able to give to eight charities,” she noted, The charity was set up to raise awareness on Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that affects mostly girls. The idea is to help the public to gain familiarity with the disorder since it is not known to many Guyanese.

The syndrome is a rare non-inherited disorder that affects 1 in 10,000 females and begins to display itself between six to 18 months after birth. Rett syndrome leads to severe impairments, affecting nearly every aspect of life: the ability to speak, walk, eat and breathe easily.

Crane woman relieved of cash, phone by lone gunman

A

52-year-old woman of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was on Wednesday robbed of a quantity of cash and other items by an armed bandit.

Based on reports received, the victim, Annamae Harris, was walking along Best Road on her way home, when she observed that a brown motor car had stopped several feet away from her.

As she approached the vehicle, a fair-skinned male jumped out of the back seat of the car and rushed towards her while brandishing a handgun.

He then demanded that she hand over her handbag but she put up some resistance. In retaliation, the bandit dealt several blows to the woman’s arm, thus forcing her to release the handbag.

After committing the act, the suspect re-entered the car and fled the scene.

The Police have confirmed that the woman was relieved of $221,000 in cash, one mobile phone and several personal documents including debit and identification cards.

No arrest was made as Police continue their investigations.

n light of COVID-19 this year, Giftland Mall on Wednesday rewarded frontline workers attached to the Sophia Health Centre with hampers.

At a brief handing over ceremony at Giftland Mall, Marketing Manager Lorenzo Persaud told the media that a decision was taken to reward frontline workers, taking into consideration the COVID-19 pandemic.

He highlighted the sacrifices the health workers would have made during this difficult period.

“We were looking to donate to other organisations, and coincidentally the Sophia Health Centre reached out to us and immediately we wanted to assist them…the smallest things such as basic necessities were hard to get and in recognition of the frontline workers, we wanted to assist them,” Persaud noted.

n East Canje, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne) man was on Thursday sentenced to 50 months’ imprisonment for beating a 6-year-old child with a hammer.

Kevin Fraser, 25, of Adelphi Village, East Canje, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranath Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where he was charged for the unlawful assault committed on his nephew.

He pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

The court heard that on Monday last, Fraser returned home at about 17:00h under the influence of alcohol and began to use a series of explicit language.

He later went to his wife and asked her for his cutlass but the woman allegedly hid same from him.

In retaliation, the drunken man reportedly spat in the pot of porridge after which he hit it off the stove.

The hot pot and its content reportedly fell on his wife’s foot and after she objected to his behaviour, he started to assault her.

She managed to run out of the house and go to the police station where she made a report. Whilst at the station, the man turned his attention on his nephew.

He reportedly dragged the lad onto the muddied dam and began to beat him with a hammer.

The Police eventually turned up at the scene but Fraser managed to escape. He was subsequently arrested. The injured lad was picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated.

Contraband items unearthed during raid at NA Prison Several arrested for ganja, gun and ammo A search conducted in the male and female dormitories of the New Amsterdam Prison unearthed a quantity of contraband items. The search commenced at about 05:30h and ended at about 10:00h.

The contraband items include 1045 grams of cannabis, 15 cell phones, several lighters, phone charges, a quantity of razor blades, 3 mirrors and a tattoo machine.

Earlier in the year, ranks of the Joint Services conducted a search at the New Amsterdam and Mazaruni Prisons as well as the Holding Bays of the Lusignan Prison and found a range of prohibited items.

Hire Purchase Bill

Buyers to be reimbursed if items repossessed T he Hire Purchase bill was on Wednesday tabled and read for the first time in the National Assembly by Legal Affairs Minister, Senior Counsel Anil Nandlall.

In the document, which was published in the Official Gazette in November through Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, there are provisions for the buyer to be released from all liability and be entitled to recover from the owner, all sums paid under the agreement, when the seller recovers possession.

Hire purchase is governed by a common law whereby the consumer pays a sum of money monthly towards the

purchase price. However, only until the final purchase price is paid, the customer becomes the owner.

Under the current legislation, if an item is bought on hire purchase and the final payment is missed, the company has the right to repossess the item. This bill would offer protection by abolishing the forfeiture.

“This section shall not apply in any case which the hirer or buyer has determined the agreement by virtue of any right vested in him,” it clarified.

In the bill, Clause 23 states that where goods have been let under a hire-purchase agreement or sold under a conditional sale agreement and less than 50 per

Providence family robbed after gunmen invade property

our armed men committed a brazen daylight robbery on a Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) family on Wednesday. Based on reports received, a teenage son of the owner of the house was left at home in the company of a domestic worker and her daughter.

However, at about 15:00h, a grey heavily tinted vehicle drove into the yard and four armed men exited. The gunmen hurriedly made their way into the home through a southern door that was reportedly left open.

As the men entered the home, they held the teenage along with the other occupants at gunpoint as they demanded cash

and gold. The armed men then proceeded to tie up the domestic worker and her daughter and started to ransack the home while holding the teenager at gunpoint.

The men escaped with an 85-inch television set, two high-end mobile phones, one Play Station Four, one HP laptop computer, a quantity of jewellery and one licensed .32 Smith and Wesson pistol with 14 live rounds of ammunition. No one was injured during the ordeal but the occupants of the house were left traumatised.

Immediately after the men left the scene, the Police were contacted.

Statements were taken as investigations continue.

Last month, President Irfaan Ali had shared the need for protecting consumers in the business system during the American Chamber of Commerce’s Annual General Meeting.

This, he said, would provide some fairness to the consumer.

“Without consumers, businesses will flounder.

My Government is committed to providing greater protection to consumers. A proposed hire purchase bill will provide much-needed protection for consumers who procure items on credit or through the hire purchase agreement.”

Dr Ali had added, “Currently, the law provides that once a consumer de-

faults on a single payment, the owner is entitled to forfeit all the previous payments and to repossess the item. This can hardly be fair to the consumer. The bill reforms the unconscionable practice.”

Meanwhile, AG Nandlall was quoted as saying by the Department of Public Information that this is being done to protect the interest of the hirer since the current law is “tremendously harsh and leaves no remedy to a defaulting hirer”.

uman Services and Social Security Minister, Dr Vindhya Persaud on Wednesday presented the Adoption of Children (Amendment) Bill to the National Assembly of the Twelfth Parliament.

The amendment of the Act will provide for the insertion of the new Second Schedule of the Principal Act â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Hague Convention of May 19, 1993, on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. It will allow for more scrutiny regarding international adoption to pro-

tect the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children from exploitation, trafficking and abuse.

Among other things, the Act will provide for a home study report on prospective adoptive parents to be conducted by the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. These include criminal checks and a full, complete statement of all facts relevant to the eligibility of the prospective parents under the Hague Convention.

In October, Minister Persaud installed the

Adoption Board which immediately began working to clear the backlog of adoption cases.

Dr Persaud, in a recent interview with DPI, said the Government halted international adoption because Guyana was not complying with its obligations as a signatory to the Hague Convention.

She said once the legislation is amended, international adoption will resume and all international guidelines will be followed to ensure adopted children are placed in a safe and comfortable environment.

The Childcare and Protection Agency in its annual review on adoption stated that 40 adoption cases were processed this year.

Twenty-three of these cases

were approved by the current, and past, Adoption Board, which comprises 19 local and four overseas-based Guyanese. Two cases were deferred and

15 are awaiting legal documents.

Additionally, the CPA developed a plan for the adoption of older children and children with special needs who are in residential care.

The adoption service is one of the substitutive alternative care services provided for children as part of the obligation of the Childcare and Protection Agency. It is legal and designed to be the final/permanent family-based care option for children who have suffered abuse, loss of parents or can no longer remain with their biological parents.

overnment has partnered with the Eureka Medical Laboratories Incorporated to make travelling safer for everyone, but it was detected that some unscrupulous individuals have attempted to expedite the process by faking their COVID-19 test results.

A statement from Eureka on Thursday condemned this action, noting that it is working with authorities to identify these persons.

“Eureka Medical Laboratories Inc has recently received reports of persons who have been falsifying negative COVID-19 results in order to travel. In this regard, EML has since put systems in place to guard against this criminal act. The laboratory has been working closely with airport authorities to ascertain the identities of those who are culpable…We do not condone this,” the private medical entity said.

It went on to caution persons to desist from forging their results as airport officials will be scrutinising all medical documents and if found culpable, serious consequences will be instituted.

“Eureka wishes to advise the public that the fabrication of results can be detrimental to the health of others, especially in the case of a positive result being translated to negative, which can aid in the unfortunate transmission of the coronavirus. Further, please be advised that there are dire consequences for indulging in this

total of 628 ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will have new titles with effect from January 1, 2021.

These promotions were announced by Chief-of-Staff Brigadier Godfrey Bess in accordance with Part 111 Section 16 of the Defence Act Chapter 15:01 of 1977.

A release issued by the Disciplined Services stated that 287 were confirmed in their rank while another 341 were elevated in rank.

“The soldiers were promoted through ranks ranging from Substantive Warrant Officer Class One to Acting Lance Corporal, and the list includes 17 ranks from the Coast Guard and another 35 from the Guyana People’s Militia (GPM)”, the release stated.

Leading the other ranks’ promotions are Warrant Officers Class

One, Kurt Trotman and Selwyn Douglas.

Leading the list at the Coast Guard is Acting Chief Petty Officer Charlton Phillips, while, at the GPM, Acting Warrant Officer Class Two, Glendon Aaron headed the list.

Those who have been confirmed in rank have been appointed to “Substantive” rank after previously holding the “Acting” rank.

The promotion of officers is yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Bess has congratulated all the promoted soldiers and wished them the best in their respective posts.

In January 2020, 35 officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were promoted after approval was given by the then Commanderin-Chief, David Granger.

Marcus Bisram wants State to pay him for false imprisonment

ormer murder accused Marcus Bisram wants the court to award him monetary damages for the period he was unlawfully incarcerated because of the actions of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack, SC, and the State. Bisram has now moved to the Guyana Court of Appeal challenging the refusal of Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall to order monetary damages in that regard.

“The learned Judge erred in law when she refused to order monetary/vindicatory damages to the appellant [Bisram] for the period of time he was unlawfully in prison because of the actions of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the State,” argued Bisram through his lawyer Arudranauth Gossai.

In June 2020, the same Judge had granted an order quashing as unlawful the directive by Ali-Hack for Bisram, a Guyanaborn US-based businessman, to be committed to stand trial for the 2016 murder of Berbice carpenter, Faiyaz Narinedatt. On April 6, 2020, the DPP, under Section 72 (2) (ii) (b) of the Criminal Law Offences Act, directed that Bisram be committed to stand trial in the High Court.

This directive was duly complied with by the Magistrate, who had previously discharged Bisram after ruling that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case at the close of a Preliminary Inquiry.

In a 32-page judgement, Justice Morris-Ramlall held that the evidence disclosed by the prosecution at the close of its case did not meet the required evidentiary threshold. “…The evidence is insufficient, or, in other words, it is not of the quality that

a reasonable jury properly directed could safely convict on it. The State or extent of the evidence is a relevant factor that should have been taken into account by the DPP in arriving at her decisions.”

According to the Judge, the evidence of one “Chunilall” was the body and soul of the prosecution’s case against Bisram.

She said that there was no other evidence, direct or circumstantial, linking Bisram to the murder charge.

“At the close of the case for the prosecution, the evidence of Chunilall was totally discredited and rendered manifestly unreliable. The evidence remained substantially the same at the close of the case for the defence […] This is the kind of the case that required the Magistrate to be particularly concerned about credibility as the evidence of Chunilall is to my mind worthless,” the Judge underscored.

When the case concluded, Justice Morris-Ramlall issued several other orders.

Among them was an order that the arrest of Bisram on March 30, 2020, was unlawful; an order that the continued incarceration of Bisram since his arrest on March 30, 2020, was unlawful; and an order preventing the DPP from bringing a murder charge against Bisram in the High Court.

Bisram is also appealing a ruling by Justice MorrisRamlall in which she rejected submissions proffered by his lawyer that Section 72 of the Criminal Law Offences Act is unconstitutional since the provision infringes on Articles 122 (a) and 144 (1) of the Constitution and the doctrine of the separation of powers.

Bisram’s appeals, as well as one filed by the DPP against the Judge’s decision to quash her directive for committal, are engaging the Court of Appeal which opened arguments on December 18, 2020. The DPP is maintaining that her order for Bisram to be committed to stand trial was lawfully made.

Further arguments will continue on January 13, 2021, before Chancellor of the Judiciary Yonette Cummings-Edwards and Justices of Appeal

which Narinedatt and others attended. Media reports are that Narinedatt went to the yard and was followed by Bisram, who

reportedly came up behind him and started “feeling him up.”

It was reported that Narinedatt slapped and chucked Bisram, who allegedly directed his friends to kill him. According to reports, several men beat the carpenter and dumped his body on the Number 70 Village Corentyne, Berbice road.

It was reported that they then drove over his body to make it appear like a vehicular accident. Five other men: Orlando Dickie, Radesh Motie, Diodath Datt, Harri Paul Parsram,

UNFPA/EU Spotlight Initiative kicks off in Region 6 – St Francis Community Developers is main partner

wo non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Region Six, (East Berbice /Corentyne) will roll out a programme to bring awareness to gender-based violence. The programme was recently launched in Region Six at St Francis Community Developers.

This is being done through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and European Union (EU) Spotlight Initiative which seeks to empower women and girls. The EU will be contributing €4.5 million or Gy$1 billion, while the UN will provide technical support.

St Francis Community Developers, Port Mourant, Corentyne and United Bricklayers of New Amsterdam will benefit from the programme with special emphasis on school-based violence and poverty. The aim of the initiative also is to empower women and girls.

Population Fund (UNFPA) Liaison Officer Adler Bynoe explained that while the initiative targets women and girls, it does not mean that

men and boys are not victims of such violence.

“Many women do not have access to the range of support services that can

protect them and assist in keeping them safe, and support and address the longterm consequences of experiencing various forms of violence.”

The lack of access to those support services, Bynoe said, is what increases the challenges in having to confront instances of violence against women and girls.

In highlighting the im-

pact that violence can have on those who suffer, he pointed out that in some instances it is fatal.

Psychological and sexual reproductive health issues can also develop as a result of violence perpetrated against women and girls.

The programme will be targeting six different areas, such as law and policies, institutional strengthening, information, provision of services, data collection, and strengthening collaboration among all stakeholders.

The two NGOs in the East Berbice/Corentyne will primarily be focusing on the provision of services as they relate to violence against women and girls.

“We see this as the bedrock of the entire spotlight programme…it can help to eliminate the issue of violence against women and girls. We will start off by having a comprehensive assessment of what the situation is across all sectors.”

These, Bynoe added, include the social services sector, the justice sector, the policing sector, and the health sector. It will also focus on how these sectors coordinate.

The programme is being rolled out in Regions One,

Four Six and Seven.

In Region Six, the target areas will be New Amsterdam, with much emphasis on Angoy’s Avenue and also Port Mourant/ Tain. It will also target the Springlands, Corriverton area.

Bynoe noted that in the area of the social services, there is need for more skilled persons to be able to effectively handle each case. He said there is also the need for more training.

“There is some discussion around that, and also some discussion around shelters for survivors. We know right now there is a real challenge in providing the infrastructure for that, so we are brainstorming to see what might be the best for Guyana and what might be the best for Region Six,” Bynoe added.

Meanwhile, six cellular phones and six electronic tablets were presented to the two NGOs, so that persons who would be doing fieldwork would be able to store data and have access to providing victims with phone calls, where needed.

The spotlight initiative allows for collaboration between all stakeholders, including civil society.

Man convicted for sodomising girl files appeal

aul Abrams, who was in 2016 found guilty and sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for sodomy and indecent assault perpetrated on a 17-yearold girl has moved to the Guyana Court of Appeal to challenge the decision of the trial court.

The offences were committed on December 5, 2007, at a location on the East Bank of Demerara.

the offences by a 12-member jury.

The prosecution’s case was that he lured the young girl into a room and sodomised her. The Trial Judge sentenced Abrams to 25 years in jail on the sodomy charge, and four years for

the indecent assault.

The Judge ordered that the sentences be served concurrently. During sentencing, Justice Barlow made it clear that the court needs to send a strong message to society that offences of such nature will not be tolerated.

Mexican nurse has become the first person in Latin America to receive a coronavirus jab when her country began its vaccination programme on Thursday.

Mexico received an initial shipment of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines the previous day.

A short time later, Chile began administering the same vaccine, with Costa Rica to

follow later on Thursday.

Mexico has one of the highest pandemic death tolls in the world, exceeded only by the US, Brazil and India.

Meanwhile, Argentina said on Wednesday it had approved the emergency use of Russia's Sputnik V vaccine and a delivery of 300,000 doses arrived in Buenos Aires on Thursday morning.

Ramirez, 59, the head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Ruben Leñero Hospital in Mexico City, was the first to volunteer to be vaccinated.

"We are afraid, but we have to move on [...] and I want to stay in the line of fire," she said afterwards, according to El Universal newspaper.

The first 3000 doses – of 34 million purchased – arrived in Mexico on Wednesday from Belgium, where they are being manufactured.

The Mexican Government says it wants to vaccinate all health workers fighting the pandemic by the end of the first quarter of 2021.

Outgoing Caricom Chairman points to resilience of Caribbean people

utgoing Chairman of the Caribbean C o m m u n i t y (Caricom), Dr Ralph Gonsalves, in his end-ofyear statement, highlighted the resilience of Caribbean nationals in a year that has been like no other.

In the statement issued on Thursday, Gonsalves, who is the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, said that while the joy of camaraderie may be missed, it should serve to “remind us of the spirit that is engendered from togetherness”.

“That spirit of unity has been a cornerstone of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) in 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged through the world this past year, our Community harnessed the intellectual and technical capacity available, and successfully managed the health aspects. This resulted in relatively low casualty figures, while containing in large measure the spread of the virus.”

“The medical and laboratory expertise of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA); the scientific craft of the University of the

West Indies (UWI); the logistical and organisational skills of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA); Caricom Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) and the Regional Security System (RSS) were all deployed to the benefit of our people,” the Caricom Chairman said.

Dr Gonsalves also paid tribute to scientists, medical staff, and front-line workers “who have done yeoman service to their fellow citizens. Praise also goes to the Pan-American Health Organization and the World Health Organisation (PAHO/ WHO) for their role in assist-

rinidad and Tobago High Court Judge Althea Alexis-Windsor has been elected to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for 2021-2030.

She was one of six Judges elected after eight rounds of voting which began on December 18.

There were six vacancies at the court.

Alexis-Windsor was elected in the eighth round with 86 of the 118 votes. She surpassed her rival from Tunisia, Haykel Ben Mahfoudh.

Judges who are nominated to the ICC have experience either litigating or adjudicating cases before the International Criminal Tribunals and the ICC itself.

Every candidate for election to the court is also required to have established competence in criminal law and procedure, the necessary experience in criminal proceedings, whether as a Judge, prosecutor or advocate, or have established competence in relevant areas of international law such as international humanitarian law and the law of human rights.

Alexis-Windsor, who was appointed a Judge of the TT Supreme Court in 2013, previously served as trial and appeals counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 2004 to 2013.

She was also a senior state counsel at the Office of the

Director of Public Prosecutions and was deputy director of the human rights unit at the Office of the Attorney General.

Brazil suspends UK flights over new virus strain

razil will suspend flights from Britain from today, after the appearance of a new strain of coronavirus in that country, according to a decree published Thursday.

"International flights to Brazil coming from or passing through the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are temporarily banned," the decree said.

Foreigners who have been in Britain during the last 14 days are also banned from entering.

About 50 countries have suspended since Sunday the arrival of travellers from

Britain after the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus.

The decree also prohibits the entry of foreigners by land and river into Brazil as of Thursday, with the exception of travellers from Paraguay and the transport of goods.

And it introduces from December 30 a requirement for foreigners entering Brazil by air to present a negative PCR test performed less than 72 hours before boarding.

Brazil has seen the second highest number of COVID-19 deaths after the United States, with nearly 190,000.

The bill combines coronavirus economic relief with federal spending, and had been agreed by both sides.

But Trump said oneoff payments to Americans should increase from US$600 to US$2000, and foreign aid should be cut.

Without the bill in force, many Americans face an uncertain Christmas.

Unemployment benefits are due to cease on Saturday if the bill is not enacted, and a moratorium on evictions may not be extended.

Legislators could pass a stopgap bill by Monday to prevent a partial government shutdown due to unfurl a day later, but this would not include coronavirus aid and Trump would

still have to sign it.

Meeting on Thursday in response to Trump’s intervention, Democrats in the House of Representatives blocked Republican attempts to cut foreign aid from the federal spending bill, while Republicans refused to allow the increase in coronavirus payments to US$2000.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said in a letter to colleagues: “House Democrats appear to be suffering from selective hearing.”

While the haggling continues on Capitol Hill, the President is spending Christmas at his resort in Palm Beach, Florida. A White House memo said he was working “tirelessly” with “many meetings and calls”.

Ethiopian military “kills 40” after BenishangulGumuz massacre

thiopia’s military has killed more than 40 men suspected to be linked to the massacre of at least 100 people, including children, in the BenishangulGumuz region, State media reported.

Five current and former Government officials were also detained over the security crisis, the reports added.

The assailants torched the homes of sleeping villagers, and shot and stabbed people in Wednesday’s attack.

The attack came a day after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the region.

It is unclear who the attackers were, but they appeared to have targeted ethnic minority communities viewed as “settlers” in the region, rights group Amnesty

International said.

Ethiopia has seen a surge in political, ethnic, and religious violence in recent years.

It had the highest number of internally displaced people in Africa in 2018 – about 1.8 million.

Conflicts have been largely fuelled by groups demanding more land and power, with attempts to drive out people they regard as outsiders.

Abiy described the massacre as tragic, and said the Government had deployed a force to the area to help find a solution to the conflict.

UK and EU reach historic post-Brexit trade deal

he European Union and the United Kingdom have reached a post-Brexit trade deal, ending months of disagreements over fishing rights and future business rules.

At a Downing Street press conference, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny.”

The text of the agreement has yet to be released,

but the PM claimed it was a “good deal for the whole of Europe”.

The UK is set to exit EU trading rules next Thursday – a year after officially leaving the 27-nation bloc.

It will mean big changes for business, with the UK and EU forming two separate markets, and the end of free movement.

But the trade deal will come as a major relief to many British businesses, already reeling from the impact of coronavirus, who feared disruption at the borders and the imposition of tariffs, or taxes on imports.

As the deal was an-

nounced, Johnson – who had repeatedly said the UK would “prosper mightily” without a deal – tweeted a picture of himself smiling with both thumbs lifted in the air.

In a press conference in Brussels, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “This was a long and winding road, but we have got a good deal to show for it.”

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 11 cents, or 0.23 per cent, to trade at US$48.23 per barrel, while Brent crude futures advanced 10 cents, or 0.2 per cent, to US$51.30 per barrel. Volumes were light on the last trading day before the Christmas holiday.

Both contracts gained more than two per cent on Wednesday.

By clinching a Brexit trade deal, Britain avoids a chaotic departure from one of the world’s biggest trading blocs, a move many investors warned would have sparked further volatility in financial markets.

“While the Brexit deal is supportive, the impact of COVID is the dominant driver in the oil market,” said Andrew Lipow, President of Lipow Oil Associates, in Houston, Texas.

“Like everyone else the oil market is waiting for the wider distribution of vaccines to get the public back on the road and in the air.”

US stockpiles fell in the most recent week in what some hoped was a signal that demand would recover after a torrid year in which gasoline and jet fuel consumption plummeted as a result of the pandemic.

US crude inventories fell by 562,000 barrels in the week to December 18, according to Government data, while gasoline and distillate stockpiles also fell.

However, new strains of the coronavirus, which appear to spread the disease more quickly, have hit the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and other countries. “Lingering worries over a new variant of the novel coronavirus capped gains,” said Hiroyuki Kikukawa, General Manager of research at Nissan Securities.

he United States has started the process of establishing a consulate in Western Sahara, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday, just weeks after Donald Trump’s Administration formally recognised Morocco’s claim to the disputed territory.

In a brief statement on Thursday, Pompeo said the US was “inaugurating a virtual presence post for Western Sahara, with a focus on promoting economic and social development, to be followed soon by a fully-functioning consulate”.

A virtual presence post allows US consular officials and staff to conduct remote, diplomatic engagement without maintaining a physical location in a designated city or region.

The State Department said the Western Sahara virtual presence post would be managed by the US embassy in Rabat, the Moroccan capital.

A Christmas to remember...

GABBFF breaking barriers in hosting 1st virtual championship

A

s the saying goes, “Christmas comes once a year and every man must have their share”. This could be said of the Guyana Amateur Body Building and Fitness Federation (GABBFF), as it was able to host its first-ever virtual competition amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Resilience Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship was held at the National Cultural Centre.

For GABBFF President Keavon Bess, the event was a relief and a breath of fresh air; with gyms closed and the lockdown in full effect, it was amazing to see the

results that the athletes brought to the table.

In an exclusive interview, Bess noted that things were different from what the Federation was accustomed to but everything was fine-tuned in the end.

“The style of preparation was completely different from what the GABBFF was used to. There were no faceto-face meetings with the athletes and judges.

Instead, we were limited to Zoom and WhatsApp meetings, but these eventually proved very efficient, because everyone was in tune with what was happening and what was expected of them on competition night.

“As it relates to prepa-

ration by the athletes, I could only imagine that it was greatly challenging. With gyms being closed for many months, athletes were forced to improvise and many of them actually worked out at home with what little they had and after gyms were partially opened a few weeks before the competition, they were able to squeeze in some actual gym training and conditioning,” Bess noted.

He stated that there was no difficult experience, and the only thing that came close to being considered difficult was anticipating all that could go wrong with a live show as there was literally no room for errors or glitches. Everything

had to be on point as soon as the production crew said action. The live show experience helped Bess to realise that with the right support staff, they can do competitions at the highest level. He was optimistic that they would be able to host a Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) Championship in the near future.

For the GABBFF boss, the most memorable experience for him was the quality of bodies that the athletes managed to put together in such a short time. He was impressed at the artistry that went into their hard work and dedication in the midst of a pandemic; the event was truly memorable for

all and the memories of the competition will continue to live on as that night was special.

When asked what lessons were learnt from the competition, Bess said, “Myself and the executive of the GABBFF have learnt many lessons. We already had the knowledge of putting together and running shows. But the work and effort that go into a live show was acquired, to a reasonable extent, when we commenced contact with the production team.

“Seon Barrington and Kerwin Bollers were very easy to work with. The GABBFF allowed them to work in their areas of expertise while we looked on and learnt and they, in

turn, allowed us the liberty to work in our areas of expertise. We formed a level of work ethics that when mixed with each other produced a wonderful bodybuilding show.

Together the two teams made history by successfully pulling off the first live bodybuilding and fitness competition in Guyana.”

Bess is hopeful that they will be able to budget for the new year and prepare a tentative calendar of events for 2021. In the end, it was definitely the best Christmas gift Bess could have received, and many avid fans will be itching to see what the GABBFF brings to the table in 2021.

Williamson was looking forward to the occasion, especially after becoming a father for the first time, although given there is a fairly important Test match also coming up, on Boxing Day against Pakistan at Mount Maunganui, his focus did drift away just a tiny little bit.

"Obviously, the child part out of all that would be most special. And then, I suppose, looking at the cricket, the context around playing a Boxing Day Test at home is really special. And, you know, having Christmas at home I suppose, when you're used to having it

away, it's a slightly different feeling (from) when you have Christmas and you're in a hotel room somewhere.

“And yeah, it'll be really nice to spend it with family this year. And I know pretty much all the guys have their families around as well to do that. So, very cool. And they'll be very excited to get into the first Test of the series."

eading might not exist in football in 10 to 15 years’ time because of the risks involved, former Tottenham and Hull midfielder Ryan Mason has said.

Mason, capped once by England, had to retire from football after fracturing his skull playing for Hull in 2017.

A recent study showed that footballers are three and a half times more likely to suffer from dementia.

"It wouldn't surprise me, in 10 to 15 years, if heading wasn't involved in the game," Mason, 29, told BBC Sport.

"The research and the momentum it's getting, I think it's probably going to open up a lot more stuff that becomes quite shocking.

"I'm not sure footballers are fully aware of the potential damage. This is where the more research, the more understanding, the more education current players get, the better.

"It might even get to a point where you might need to sign something to say, ‘I'm okay [playing with the risk]’.

"It really is concerning.

The problem we have is you don't know the effects until you get later on in life."

The field study conducted by neuropathologist Dr Willie Stewart found that

footballers were more likely to suffer from dementia and other brain injury diseases, but has not established whether it was caused by concussions from collisions or repeatedly heading the ball.

The family of 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who was diagnosed with a brain condition linked to repeated blows to the head, believe heading caused his dementia before he died in October.

Changes have already been made to how often children are allowed to head the ball, but there are also concerns about how head injuries have been treated in football.

Former Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen said earlier this month that he felt the effects of a concussion for nine months after he tried to play on during a Champions League match two seasons ago.

Mason, who said he was "lucky to be alive" after his clash of heads with former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, found Vertonghen's story "quite shocking".

And he questions why football has opted for trials of permanent concussion substitutions rather than temporary ones seen in rugby union.

From January, teams will be allowed to use two

additional permanent substitutes to allow for head injuries. But there has been criticism of that move from Stewart and brain charity Headway, who believe that temporary substitutions are a better alternative.

That process allows a substitute to come on the field immediately, allowing a doctor 10 minutes to make an assessment rather than the permanent option, where the decision is made in a shorter period of time.

The temporary option has flaws, according to Football Association head of medicine Charlotte Cowie, as players can sometimes still be allowed to return to play after a longer assessment.

But Mason, who is now coaching at Tottenham's academy, says the permanent option adds more "pressure" to the decision.

"Why [is football] not following something that is in place and has worked?" he said.

"Rugby has a protocol in place that gives the players, the team and the individual the opportunity to go off to be tested by an independent doctor away from the pitch where there isn't pressure from the manager to get the player back on the pitch - or pressure [from the stands] when the fans are back."

And what he saw Henry Nicholls making his career-best score on a very green pitch, Kyle Jamieson continuing to come into his own in Test cricket, Neil Wagner doing what Neil Wagner does definitely pleased him.

"It's always mixed, watching," Williamson said.

"Although I had other things on my plate, which was great, but you also always miss the guys as well when you're so used to playing with each other. But then, it was really, really nice to see them play so well and work through a number of tough periods on wickets that have been sporting.

NBA postpones Thunder versus Rockets due to coronavirus concerns

ouston's clash against the Oklahoma City Thunder, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed after three Rockets players returned positive or inconclusive coronavirus tests.

ESPN reports that John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Jae'Sean Tate were sent home from practice after rookie KJ Martin Jr. tested positive for COVID-19. Martin subsequently tested negative.

Rockets star James Harden, who has reportedly requested a trade, also violated NBA protocols when attending a public event.

That was confirmed in a statement from the NBA, which said the RocketsThunder clash would not go ahead as scheduled.

"The National Basketball Association game scheduled for tonight between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center has been postponed in accordance with the league's health and safety protocols," it read.

"Three Houston Rockets players have returned tests that were either positive or inconclusive for coronavirus under the NBA's testing programme. Following the contact tracing protocol, four other players are

quarantined at this time.

"Additionally, James Harden is unavailable due to a violation of the health and safety protocols. All other Rockets players were tested again today, and all returned negative results.

Houston has one additional player who is unavailable due to injury.

"As such, the Rockets do not have the league-required eight available players to proceed with tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder."

LBI cricket facility opens – hosting First-Class cricket now possible in 2 years

H

istory was created at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) cricket facility. Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, on Wednesday evening flipped the switch to unveil the international standard lights at the new and improved LBI Community Centre ground, which is under the full control of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).

According to the GCB Secretary Anand Sanasie, the ultimate aim of this facility is to host first-class cricket within the next two years. Sanasie indicated that the vision was one which was being worked towards over the last 10 years, and during the last five years, they were able to acquire a 99-year lease

He indicated that the playing area is only in the first phase of development, and the drainage can challenge that of the National Stadium at Providence at any given time.

Additionally, plans are

“In less than two years, the playing area was completed along with the installation of the LED lights, which still have to be focused by the engineer, which is expected to be done within a week,” Sanasie explained.

Delighted, Minister Persaud, who is also Head of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, envisioned this as the beginning of great things for the future of cricket and other

sporting events. Minister Persaud charged the officials to ensure the facility is not used only for cricket, but is available for the entire community, and she also expressed hope to see female teams being developed.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Assembly and President of the Everest Cricket Club, Manzoor Nadir, was ecstatic to witness this development.

He noted that cricket in Guyana will be competitive at various levels.

Nadir disclosed that a national first division tournament will be launched in the near future, with the winning purse being some G$1 million, and negotiations are ongoing to have a motorcar as the reward to the Most Valuable Player.

Further, Nadir said the Everest Cricket Club is looking to install international standard lights.

The LBI facility also houses the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence (indoor practice facility and dormitory).

t just 16 years old, Odida Parkinson crossed the finish line in the top ten of the recently concluded South American 10K road race, trumping some experienced campaigners.

The all-local South American 10K road race was this year different in many ways, but it was a standout one for a number of competitors.

While the race saw two new champions in the male and female categories, an outstanding performance was also witnessed by an up-and-coming distance athlete.

Odida Parkinson had previously only once tried his hand at the 3000M and 5000M races which catered to his age group, but stepped up to the 10K last weekend.

In the end, the young man finished among the top ten competitors (inclusive of seniors). Here’s how he felt

about the race: “To me, as my coachman said, ‘Start off hard and go with the pack’, so that’s what I do. For me, it was really challenging, because it was my first time running a 10K.” Clocking 39:45:48, Parkinson was third among the junior males, and found the conditions to be favourable.

“It was good! I had the encouragement that I needed, that I was supposed to get from my coach and my club mates and so,” the youngster stated.

According to the teenager, he is now focused on taking the title at the National Schools Track and Field Championships, and is looking forward to the next senior competition of that nature.

“I think I’ll do some more training; cause how I ran, I’m real proud of myself, and I’m hoping to do better next year,” he told this publication.

The teenager finished third, behind only Kennard Hartog who clocked 36:06:54 and Seon Booker who finished on 39:24:48.
