minibus carrying 11 Guyanese passengers, including two children, plunged into a trench in Nickerie, Suriname, after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The accident occurred around 13:30h (Suriname time) on Wednesday in West Nickerie on the Adron Road in Europolder.

Guyana Times understands that the bus

was heading towards Paramaribo and it attempted to overtake a car during which time the driver lost control and the car landed in the trench.

According to information reaching this newspaper, the bus was reportedly speeding at the time.

The traumatised mud-covered passengers were pulled from the vehicle by public-spirited per-

sons, who had jumped into the trench to rescue the victims.

Eyewitnesses say that the trapped passengers could be heard screaming from inside the vehicle that was toppled on its side in the trench.

While the passengers were being rescued, the matter was reported and an ambulance arrived on

the scene shortly after to transport the victims to the hospital, where seven of them were treated and sent away, while four were admitted for further observation. They are said to be in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle is assisting Police in the neighbouring country with further investigations.

“Cobra” facing fresh trial at High Court next week

ive years after he was found guilty and was sentenced to 78 years’ imprisonment, Tyrone Rowe, called “Cobra”, is being tried at the Demerara High Court after the Court of Appeal

overturned his conviction earlier this year. His trial will begin next Monday before Justice Sandil Kissoon and a 12-member jury.

The panel was selected on Thursday following Rowe entering a not-guilty

plea after the State presented the murder indictment, accusing him of Troy Collymore’s August 2010 murder.

Collymore died two days after he was shot following a robbery at a pharma-

cy at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The accused is being represented by Attorney George Thomas while State Counsels Lisa Cave and Orinthia Schmidt are prosecuting the case.

orty-three-year-old Eon Archibald, a security guard, who, in June 2015, attacked and chopped a man whom he accused of having an affair with his reputed wife was on Thursday jailed for five years by Justice Sandil Kissoon after he offered the victim compensation in the sum of $300,000.

Earlier this month, the accused pleaded guilty shortly after the trial admitting to stabbing Duane “Country” Wallace twice with a cutlass at the Pavement View Restaurant and Bar in Georgetown. Before Thursday’s sentencing, Archibald, a father of six, apologised to Wallace, saying he was “confused” at the time.

However, the victim told the court via testimony from the witness box that he has not forgiven the defendant, since he

nearly lost his life.

Justice Kissoon then handed down the sentence, stating that compensation could not excuse Archibald’s actions, even asking the victim if he preferred a jail sentence be imposed rather than accepting the money. Wallace, however, responded that he could not say.

The Judge started at a base of 20 years, but deducted time for the offender’s guilty plea; his favourable probation report, his attorney’s plea of mitigation, genuine remorse, the compensation paid, and the ninth months he spent on remand awaiting trial.

The defendant was represented by Adrian Thompson.

Thompson asked for a suspended sentence, which the court rejected since Archibald never saw Wallace and the woman in a compromising position.

by AFC to pull out of 10 LAAs T

he Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is questioning the process by which the Alliance For Change (AFC) managed to pull out last minute from almost 10 Local Authority Areas (LAAs), for which they had planned to contest at the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE).

The Party’s General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo told a media conference on Thursday that he finds it thought-provoking that the AFC is reluctant to give the locations of those areas.

“What is very interesting, is (David) Patterson said that…we are not telling you where. So, they wrote this down on a piece of paper and they folded this paper carefully and locked it in a safe because like it’s a State secret about which areas they are pulling out of,” Jagdeo stated.

The AFC on Wednesday announced plans to contest only 38 Local Authority Areas at the upcoming Local Government Elections. This announcement follows previous statements made by the party, where they had initially said the AFC had planned to contest the elections in more than 50 areas.

The party blamed a number of issues for the decision not to contest more areas, including political bullying and issues with communication.

Patterson said nevertheless, he is satisfied with the position the AFC is in at the moment and the AFC will continue to work hard to prepare for LGE. But the PPP General Secretary questioned the method used by the AFC to pull out, explaining that this would have had to be done within a specific timeframe. “[The Guyana Elections Commission] GECOM is not accepting pulling out anymore. GECOM has already printed the ballots. So, if GECOM printed the ballots and you pull out now, the candidates’ names will still be on the ballot,” he explained.

Jagdeo’s contention is since GECOM has made it clear to the PPP that the lists cannot be adjusted, he is now thinking about what mechanism was used to pull out. The PPP had pulled out of one constituency in Wakenaam, but he said this was done within the prescribed period.

“If they pull out and we don’t know where they are pulling out from, they are going to still be on the ballot, so how will GECOM treat this? I don’t know if they understand this is not a simple matter and it begs a lot of questions.

If GECOM is allowing them to pull out now, then GECOM is complicit. They say they can’t make adjustments in PPP areas, but they can for the AFC? And then again if GECOM has not accepted this, then this is all a farce,” he added.

Jagdeo said the call by the AFC is nothing more than a “sham”, since he believes the party currently has nothing else going for it as LGE approaches.

“Imagine these people shut down debates in Parliament, they rush through bills, they refuse to answer questions and we have a long list of questions in Parliament that they refuse to give answers to… And now he (Patterson) wants debates here. But I think it is just another sham, because they have nothing else going for them,” he declared.

Patterson also announced his support for the hosting of public debates among constituency candidates vying for positions within their Local Government organisations.

He expressed his Party’s willingness to participate in any such event as the time draws closer for the LGE. “We do feel there should be a debate among candidates, particularly, in the larger constituencies and municipalities, like persons in the constituencies in Georgetown, Linden, Bartica, New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, should have a public debate…

on policies and positions,” he said Wednesday.

However, Patterson says the AFC will not seek to organise any such debates itself, as it may be viewed as a strategy to dominate.

Nevertheless, the party said it is willing to participate in any event organised by any civil society group or organisation in Guyana.

The party’s campaign

manager was clear, however, as to the conditions under which AFC candidates will participate. He said the party would prefer having these debates hosted in the larger constituencies, rather than smaller ones spread across the country.

The PPP General Secretary also lashed out at the AFC for using “Fit and proper” as its campaign slogan. Jagdeo referred to the origin of those words which were used by President David Granger to describe GECOM Commissioner James Patterson, although there were concerns.

The PPP has since challenged the President’s unilateral appointment. Jagdeo said the AFC appears to be laughing at all of Guyana, with its adoption of the term as its political campaign. He also accused the President of abusing State resources to campaign for his party at the LGE.

Mental health A

ccording to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realises his or her own abilities can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. It estimates that at least one in four people will suffer one or more mental health disorders in a lifetime.

We all have the potential for suffering from mental health problems, regardless of age, gender, financial standing, or ethnicity. Many factors can increase the likelihood of us experiencing issues, but poor mental health has no prejudice.

It may seem that mental health has become a buzzword and yes, people are talking about it, the government is behind developments and awareness is growing, but what does poor mental health really look like? Those who suffer from mental health disorders will find it challenging to maintain productivity or contribute to the community, but more importantly, it will affect their day-to-day lives closer to home.

For example, one of the most common types of disorders is a group of anxiety disorders that include panic disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. All of these have an adverse effect on day-to-day lives, because they limit and dictate behaviour regardless of what a person wants to do. The fear they live with disrupts their potential for stability and happiness and they can be constantly or frequently on edge.

Other types of ailments are mood disorders; mild or major depression and bipolar disorder. These affect people in a variety of ways: losing interest in activities, prolonged periods of sadness, lack of motivation, and feelings of despair. In the case of bipolar disorder, the sufferer oscillates between episodes of euphoria (mania) and depression (despair).

Another serious condition is schizophrenia. The sufferer has thoughts that appear fragmented and finds it hard to process information. They hallucinate, can be delusional and can withdraw into their own world. This condition can pose danger to both the sufferer and those they come into contact with, and obviously affect their day-to-day life and reality.

Mental health is a level of psychological well-being; just as physical health relates to our physical well-being. The difference is that as a nation we seem to be able to accept that we need help to maintain our physical health and most of us will willingly visit the doctor, accept treatment when necessary and even take measures to prevent deterioration.

Contrarily, the stigma attached to mental health prevents so many from reaching out for help, working to prevent poor mental health, or even accepting there is problem.

Here in Guyana, there are added factors contributing to the prevention of people receiving treatment, including the absence of qualified professionals, the uneven distribution of those limited resources, ignorance, a self-reliance culture and religious beliefs. These exasperate the problem, as studies show that the earlier the intervention the greater the reduction in the symptoms the individual experiences, the faster the recovery and return to functionality and the lower the rates of recurrence.

The way forward is to continue working towards changing the culture of dismissing mental health issues, encouraging a new attitude to recognise issues are not weakness, educating people about the disorders, and encouraging them to seek help. It has already been determined that preventive, community-based care is better suited to treat people with mental health issues rather than an overreliance on psychiatric doctors, so efforts need to be made to train nurses and community healthcare workers to respond to emotional and psychological concerns.

Similarly, although having a counsellor in every school is a great goal, mentors would provide broader, preventive care that would be more beneficial, quicker to implement and easier to resource. This would allow intervention and prevention earlier in the life cycle.

Don’t let the mental health awareness occasioned by our commemoration of World Mental Health Day (October 10) pass without note. Invest in maintaining your own mental health by taking time out to understand yourself, seek ways to enjoy a healthy state of mind, and ask for help if ever you need it.

Bulkan’s Government’s treatment of Guyanese: “squeezing stone to extract blood” Dear Editor, I must thank the Honourable Minister Ronald Bulkan for taking time-off from his ‘busy’ schedule to address my letter which he described as ‘misleading conjectures’. However, this will not invalidate the veracity of the content therein.

Editor, allow me to inform the Communities Minister that whenever I give my views; my personal view and not the views of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). The only person who speaks on behalf of the PPP is the General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo.

I spoke of ‘change’ since this is the mantra of Bulkan’s Government, hence, when I asked the rhetorical question: What differences have Local Government Elections and governance made to your lives and communities?

I was alluding to that change which was promised. We expected to see vast improvements and progress above what is already achieved by these Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC). It was in this context that I have said: ‘I am absolutely sure that nothing much has changed in your communities or lives.’ Where is the ‘good life’ Minister Bulkan?

Bulkan boasted about the increase of subvention from $3 million to $4 million, a mere 25 per cent over

a three-year period. One million cannot even repair one street in an NDC area.

How can NDCs be empowered when they desperately lack resources?

No amount of training can empower anyone without resources and this Government has been very selective in allocating the resources. For instance, the Fyrish NDC which is controlled by Bulkan’s party was gifted a brand new long boom Hymac to remain in that NDC while the neighbouring NDC, which is controlled by the PPP, was given a small Hymac which was taken away months ago and sent to Georgetown under the pretext of repairs. Why is it that a Hymac in operable condition was sent for repairs in Georgetown?

Bulkan also boasted about the return of Local Government Elections after two decades but he has failed to mention the gerrymandering which he has done to obtain for his party a political advantage in future elections. This is in addition to the many electoral frauds aided by the Guyana Elections Commission which is being perpetrated by his party and the Alliance For Change. Is this the restoration of local democracy by this Government? No! It is the restoration of the electoral fraud which the People’s National Congress

is adept at.

Furthermore, this Government’s link of taxes to economic development is stupefying and gross insanity. This Government believes that the NDCs should implement an increase in rates and taxes and only this can empower the NDC to carry out developmental works.

I have stated in my letter that even in NDCs and municipalities controlled by the A Partnership for National Unity and where they imposed 100 per cent taxes, nothing has changed.

I said Government needs to pump more resources into the LAAs. Already the residents are faced with an increase in their cost of living by skyrocketing increases in more than 200 taxes, closure of estates, dismissal of thousands on sugar workers, the decline in rice production and many other negative variables so it will be disastrous to bleed these people any further. Bukan and his colleagues are enjoying their humongous salary increases, perks and other benefits so what do they care about the common man.

Is Bulkan trying to postulate that LAAs should generate all the resources needed to efficiently run them?

This is totally asinine! LAAs can only do so much for their respective communities, it is the Central Government

which must make up for the deficit in the budgets of these entities and ensure development is taking place.

How many communities have Bulkan visited to see what is needed and what can be done? This Government feels that the holding of LGE is the panacea for all the ills facing our communities. It is time that this Government gives realistic subventions which can be used to do tangible development in the LAAs and at the same time take up the slack to ensure that all the LAAs are developed evenly regardless of perceived political affiliations.

Lastly, Bulkan should also reply to me as to the reason why subventions are still to be disbursed to many of the NDCs, his selective nitpicking of my letter will not absolve him from the inefficiency and incompetence of his Ministry and his Government.

This is clearly an attempt to make the 75 per cent PPP controlled NDCs look bad before the upcoming LGE. Guyanese are conscious that Minister Bulkan’s Government and his party is squeezing Guyanese to extract money that they don't have that is like "squeezing stone to extract blood ".

Government abuse of State funds (Part 2) Dear Editor, Now that Local Government Elections are upon us, President David Granger has made several trips to Lethem, Region Nine (Upper TakutuUpper Essequibo) in recent weeks, and is due to return there again on October 14 for the “official launch” of Lethem Town Week. This is just another manufactured event to utilise State funds to campaign.

I expect he will be giving away bicycles as he did in Anna Regina in an effort to win votes. Then earlier, the President going to Skeldon to distribute bicycles to children in the middle of a campaign is nothing short of obscene.

For he could have easily gone to the schools to distribute the bicycles instead of taking the children to make up numbers at his campaign rally.

And a compassionate President would have also taken the severance pay to the thousands of sugar workers he displaced, most of whom can’t even provide food for their families.

Then Granger has the cohones to tell the gathering at Anna Regina – a People’s Progressive Party (PPP) stronghold, that on November 12, they should elect visionary leaders, “It is not just a passive town council where people just get elected and they just sit down… They have to look after public services and public health…

They must look after sanitation and keep the canals clean. They have to look after security and economic growth.

Elect someone who is multitalented and willing to work, not because they belong to a political party

but because they are prepared to work.” If Granger had adhered to this same principle, the voters would never have elected him and his Ministers.

Over the last few months, a huge number of trips were made by Ministers of Government to Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini); Lethem, Region Nine; Mahdia, Region Eight (PotaroSiparuni) and other interior locations ostensibly to do Government business with sometimes three chartered aircraft seen on the ground.

But in reality, they’re there to do political work and to distribute the People’s National Congress newspapers – The New Nation.

So, the question submitted to the National Assembly by PPP Member of Parliament, Pauline Sukhai-Campbell that was disallowed by the Speaker, is not without merit. This Government needs to stop the shameless abuse of State funds to finance their political campaigns.

During the pre-election period leading up to the last Local Government Election in 2016, it is estimated that A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change cost the Treasury almost $50 million flying campaign workers and others to the Lethem and Mabaruma municipalities alone.

Where are the international organisations and the local groups who used to talk about abuse of resources during the previous Administration? Cat got your tongue?

US Leadership and Development Programme (LEAD) needed now more than ever

Dear Editor, The much talked about Local Government is a point blank facade. It is a fraudulent scheme that has been foisted on the people with a seemingly pleasant outward appearance whereas in its workings there is a horrible reality.

The reasons for my statement is that you just have to look at what transpired in the intervening two years since the last elections and you will be jolted to the stark reality that absolutely nothing was achieved by this Administration in the troubled area of governance.

There are vivid signs of retrogression wherever Local Government has entered a community. There are still clogged drains, with the intendant mosquito infestation; there are still large piles of solid waste build-up, leading to cockroaches and rat invasion.

Added to these evils, we have to deal with corrupt deals from equally arrogant and corrupt officials who are always buzzing around the Treasury. Is this the Local Government they were talking about? Is this the good life?

The fact is the inept

Central Government has simply passed the buck on to the local communities so that they would not be held accountable for the wrongdoings there.

And you don't have to look very far, because most, if not all the areas, held by the People’s National Congress or its affiliate partner, the Alliance For Change, the problems are multitudinous that are always in the news.

So, I call on The ABC's in our midst especially, the USA here in Guyana, you foisted a programme to "educate" the People’s

Progressive Party/Civic on how good and clean governance should be administered, why not put forward such a programme now? We are in dire need of it!

The leadership and development project (LEAD) meant to teach us natives down here as to how good and proper civilised beings ought to conduct themselves, well; I must say we need it now more than ever.

Could someone in the USA Embassy apprise us on this one? Just asking?

Govt should not shirk from its responsibility Dear Editor, It did not escape the attention of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) that Finance Minister Winston Jordan, in the October 6 Kaieteur News, said “…come the 18th of October when Parliament reconvenes, a supplementary paper with the severance balance payment which I believe is $2.41 billion will be on that paper”. For the GAWU, and more so the thousands of jobless workers and their families, some literally surviving day by day, the news is most positive in the context of the gloom that has now encumbered their lives.

But most distastefully, the Minister goes on saying to the workers “[i] hope you can rest peacefully that your money is on its way and not be goaded into these unnecessary picketing that gives the impression as if the Government doesn’t want to pay the mon-

ey”. Such a comment coming from a leading member of the coalition is simply unbelievable especially, when they are contrasted with his rambunctious statements in his letter in the October 9, 2018, Stabroek News.

Whether the Minister, and by extension the Government, may want to admit it or not, the fact that the Administration is now moving to secure the funds to offset the workers lawful entitlements, incidentally days prior to the Local Government Elections, is because of the sustained call and actions by the workers for them to receive what they duly deserve.

The workers involvement in picketing exercises; the union pursuance of the matter through the Judiciary, which we must add benefited from a fair share of gimmickry; apart from other actions and initiatives are what, we contend, are forcing the Government to now making

moves to settle its indebtedness to the beleaguered workers and their families.

Had the workers remained meek and mute as the Administration may have wished, the urge to settle the outstanding payments would have simply been absent in the coalition’s quarters. But the Government didn’t, seemingly, bargain for the sustained and vociferous calls by the workers and their families.

The entire episode, however, should demonstrate to our people that they can only succeed in getting this A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change Administration to listen to their cries when they raise their voices in a united and committed manner. We have seen this approach succeeding in the struggles by the sugar workers; the movement against the parking meters; and more recently in the protests by our nation’s teachers.

Nevertheless while the GAWU is pleased by this turn of events, we hasten to warn the Administration that it simply cannot turn its back on this hard-pressed segment of Guyanese. They still require, and more so deserve, the State’s assistance in getting back to their feet.

They notwithstanding their payments, reside in communities where jobs are simply absent; where, for many, their children are unable to enjoy full schooling; where they cannot pay their bills, among other things.

The Government who placed these people in the predicament they find themselves has a responsibility to them and should not seek to shirk from it as it apparently is seeking to do at this time.

Immunisation (vaccination) is a way to create immunity to some diseases. This is done by using small amounts of a killed or weakened microorganism that causes the disease.

Microorganisms can be viruses (such as the measles virus) or they can be bacteria (such as pneumococcus).

Vaccines stimulate the immune system to react as if there were a real infection – it fends off the "infection" and remembers the organism so that it can fight it quickly should it enter the body later.

What is HPV?

uman papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It can cause genital warts and changes in the cervix that can result in cervical cancer. It can also lead to cancer in other areas. Recent research suggests it may even be linked to cardiovascular disease in women.

HPV immunisation schedule

The vaccine is recommended for girls and boys 11 or 12 years old, as well as for older kids who are unvaccinated. If needed, kids can get the vaccine starting at age 9.

The vaccine is given as a series of shots: For children ages 9-14, it is given in two shots over a 6- to 12-month period.

For teens and young adults ages 15-26, it is given in three shots over a 6-month period.

Why is the HPV vaccine recommended?

Because HPV can cause serious problems such as genital warts and some types of cancer, a vaccine is an important step in preventing infection and protecting against the spread of HPV. It works best when given before someone becomes sexually active.

Possible risks of the HPV vaccine

The most common side effects are mild fever and tenderness, swelling, and redness at the injection site. Dizziness, fainting, nausea, and vomiting also can follow a shot. Allergic reactions to the vaccine are rare.

GTU salary impasse

Today’s meeting will not resolve teachers’ wages dispute – GTUC

A

s much as the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) would like to see the teachers’ wages dispute being resolved today, the President of the Union, Lincoln Lewis has said he has no faith that the meeting will bring an end to the impasse.

He made this statement during an interview with Guyana Times on Thursday.

The trade unionist explained, “I am not optimistic that that tomorrow (today) they are going to come to a resolution.

What they need to do is get all the actors on the table”.

According to him, there are several other Ministers and Ministries which need to be involved to sort out the ongoing dispute between the two. “It requires getting all the players, the Ministry of Finance, because they will have to find the money (and the) Social Protection

(Ministry) under which the Labour Department falls.

Together, the parties have to sit down to find a resolution to this issue,” the trade unionist asserted.

He related that while the process of arbitration has not been wiped off the table, the GTU is now towing the line as the Education Ministry and itself have engaged in bilateral discussions to address the issue.

Lewis said his Union has been in talks with the GTU as they continue to draft plans for what was referred to as unmentionable at this time. He explained, “I’ve been talking with the GTU and I won’t want to talk about what was discussed at this time”.

Although several calls went unanswered by the GTU executives, the union’s President, Mark Lyte disclosed that they are hopeful that the matter will be re-

solved today.

Asked whether teachers could return the streets if talks failed, he said, “Let’s wait for that time”.

At today’s meeting the GTU is expected to meet with the Education Ministry which has taken on the responsibility of presenting a “matrix of figures” for teachers.

At the last meeting held on Wednesday, both parties were reluctant to give information in relation to a figure being discussed for teachers.

They would only say that talks so far are fruitful and “new information was provided that was not discussed nor considered prior to the offers made earlier”.

Teens accused of raping girl to stand trial in High Court

hree teenage boys who were arraigned for the rape of an 11-year-old girl were on Wednesday committed to stand trial in the High Court.

The order was handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman when the defendants made their second appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after being released on their pre-trial liberty by Chief

Magistrate Ann McLennan.

The teens – 18-year-old Caozuyag Menuy as well as a 15-year-old and a 14-yearold – are accused of having sexual intercourse with a girl who is under the age of consent between October 1 and October 31, 2017 while in the vicinity of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara.

According to the prosecution’s case, the boys allegedly held down the child and molested her. The mat-

ter was reported to the Police, and the teens were arrested.

Defence Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, in an application for bail for the boys, asked the Magistrate to be lenient and grant bail in a reasonable amount.

Bail was granted in the sum of $70,000 for the 18-year-old while the 15-year-old and the 14-yearold were each placed on $40,000 bail.

Meanwhile, the Education Minister described the new salaries for teachers as “a work in progress”. “If we may say it’s a work in progress and so the new information is nothing specific that we would wish to share at this point in time. sue”.

On Monday, President David Granger offered a 10 per cent increase for 2016 and eight per cent for 2018.

The GTU had also said in a social media post that, “…an offer of $350 million is made to settle debunching for the period 2011-2018. Teachers to be placed in scales as of January 2019. Payments for debunching and 2018 will be made in December while retroactive 2016 increase will be made in January 2019 if agreed”.

The Head of State said on Wednesday that he was shocked by the Union’s rejection of the offer.

Initially, the GTU was calling for a 40 per cent increase and were set for arbitration after calling off a nationwide strike on September 6. They were however, ready to head back into the streets after the Education Ministry and itself was unable to agree on an arbitration panel.

This had led to the present conciliator, Minister Keith Scott, unilaterally appointing a Chairman who was introduced as University of Guyana Professor, Leyland Lucas.

This time around the GTU were promising an even massive protest, as its sister unions, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) and the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) joined them in their call for better wages for teachers.

Man charged with woman’s murder to spend more time behind bars

35-year-old mason of Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (BE), was on Thursday further remanded to prison for the murder of a 27-year-old woman back in 2008.

Sylvester Vanderhyden made yet another court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was previously charged and was not required to enter a plea to the charge and as such, he was remanded to prison.

On Thursday, the accused was further remanded. He will make his next court appearance on November 1,

The charge stated that on November 5, 2008, at Agricola, Greater Georgetown, Vanderhyden murdered Melissa Payne. After being on

the run for nine years, he was arrested in May last year, and was subsequently charged with the indictable offence.

According to reports, Payne was fatally shot after she attempted to resist the perpetrator of a brazen attack on herself and a male companion.

The pair had encountered mechanical problems and had exited the canter truck in which they were travelling when they were accosted by several armed men who relieved them of a bag containing some $110,000 in cash along with a quantity of jewellery.

It was after Payne exhibited reluctance to hand over her

handbag that she was shot by one of the perpetrators. The men then made good their escape.

Payne’s companion, who was named as David Fraser, reported flagging down a motorist who transported the bleeding woman to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Soon after the incident, several men were arrested, and Jermine Savory of Agricola was charged with the murder of Payne after he allegedly cracked under pressure and admitted to his involvement in the crime.

Savory, however, denied ever firing the fatal shot at the woman.

PI into Subryanville fatal shooting commences

he Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the shooting to death of 30-year-old Jason De Florimonte commenced on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Judy Latchman.

The PI saw two witnesses testifying on the first day.

Christine Rambarran, the girlfriend of the murdered man, was the first to be called to the stand. Her testimony was led by Special Prosecutor Dexter Todd, who asked questions relating to what occurred on the night her boyfriend was shot and killed.

However, the witness’s

testimony was ripped apart

by Defence Attorney Nigel Hughes after he questioned the truthfulness of it. Also taking the stand to testify against the accused was the cousin of the dead man, Michael Whitehead.

The accused, businessman Erwin Bacchus, owner of Tourist Villa Hotel in Subryanville, Georgetown, is accused of murdering De Florimonte by shooting him multiple times on August 4, 2018 after he went in pursuit of his handyman, who had intervened in a domestic dispute outside the Tourist Villa Hotel.

oday is October 12; the day Columbus “discovered” the “New World” back in 1492. Never mind there were millions of human beings living there for as long as Europeans had been in Europe!! That act, of course, set off a series of genocides such as the world had never seen. Literally, countless millions of the inhabitants in the New World of the Americas were wiped out through a combination of what one researcher called “guns, germs and steel”.

Following up with that horror, the Europeans then turned their attention to Africa – which they defined as “uncivilised” and “heathen” – and so could plunder, rape and pillage as they saw fit. It was the “plunder” in people that was their most horrific act: between 1524 and 1866 according to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World. 10.7 million survived to live their lives in slavery.

That means 1.8 million Africans perished in what is called “the Middle Passage” and were thrown into the Atlantic. This genocidal act is being commemorated in Guyana at the Georgetown Seawall, to remind the world of the horrors that was visited upon the ancestors of People of African Origin who have survived in the “New World”. It’s called the “African Holocaust” or “Maafa”.

Truly, all across Europe THEY should be doing penance for this unimaginable horror inflicted on another people!

But instead, the reparations that Caricom nations are demanding as an act of “reparative justice” has been coldly rebuffed by the major nations that participated in the Slave Trade – Britain, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, etc. It is more than ironic that October 2 has been dubbed “International Day of Non-Violence” – the month in which the most extensive acts of violence were inflicted on so many across the world.

For the Europeans didn’t stop at shipping African slaves to the New World in their quest for “God, gold and glory”. They divvied the globe into “Empires” which they expropriated through hook or crook. Mostly the latter, to extend and institutionalise their plunder. India, for instance, was plundered so thoroughly that the Hindi word “loot” entered the English language, intact!!

More than 50 million Indians perished in famines during which millions of tons of wheat and rice were exported to Britain!

But the killings weren’t always so obvious. We can extend Walter Rodney’s thesis illustrated in “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” to all the European colonies that were peopled by non-Europeans. And it is this systemic “underdevelopment” that keeps these ex-colonies at the bottom of the economic barrel and suffering from the high mortality, malnutrition and low life expectancy that characterise their “profile”.

anks in A Division (Georgetown and East Bank Demerara) have arrested a dog food vendor after he was found in possession of an illegal gun and matching ammunition.

The discovery was made around 10:45h on Thursday at the suspect’s E Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown home.

According to reports, acting on information received, the ranks went to the house in question, where they carried out a search of the premises during which an unlicensed .32 Taurus pistol, along with 12 live matching rounds, was found.

The suspect was subsequently taken into custody, where he is currently being processed for court.

Imagine Hamilton Green saw it fit to lecture the PPP on “racial politics” and the need for peace!! Was he looking at “the man in the mirror”?? Hamilton Green cut his teeth on racial politics from the time Burnham birthed the PNC upon the instigation of the western forces that wanted Cheddi Jagan and the PPP out.

Burnham knew he was taking the African Guyanese along with him – as Jagan pointed out as early as 1956 in his speech to Congress – leaving the Indians with Jagan.

But he didn’t care.

He teamed up with the League of Coloured People racists who’d accused him of selling out to the “Indian” Jagan, even though the latter had disassociated himself from JB Singh, the then dominant Indian leader. During the 1960 riots, Green earned his “spurs” as one of the most violent thugs in the PNC, such that even Burnham kept him out of the succession plan.

And it’s more than funny for Green to be talking about “peace”. Was he thinking about “Greenpeace”??

Nandlall accuses State of “delaying” Shadick’s challenge to Local Authority changes ...as court set to rule on jurisdiction next week

s the High Court is set to rule on whether or not it has jurisdiction to hear a People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Commissioner’s challenge to changes across several Local Authority Areas (LAA), the Party’s attorney Anil Nandlall is claiming that moves are afoot to delay the case. Attorney General Basil Williams did not appear on Wednesday but was represented by a junior attorney when Bibi Shadick’s challenge over Communities Minister Ronald Bulkan’s changes continued before Justice Gino Persaud.

The Judge has set Monday to rule on whether the court will hear Shadick’s case now; or allow the Local Government Elections to be held and then hear the case via an elections petition.

This followed the Attorney General’s jurisdiction counter-challenge to the PPP case. Nandlall noted that he received a letter from Williams on Tuesday, saying he could not make Wednesday’s hearing but

in the attorney’s view, the GECOM challenge is one of great urgency.

“We would have hoped that we would have an opportunity to articulate our submissions orally; unfortunately, the Attorney General did not attend the court; neither did the Solicitor General... the urgency of this matter is paramount so I impressed that this matter must be concluded long before the Local Government Elections,” Nandlall stressed.

He in fact feels that there could be deliberate moves to delay the overall case until after the November 12 polls.

“He [the AG] only served his submissions [Tuesday] thereby giving me just hours to respond because I was supposed to read his submissions and then take five days to respond to what he said [but] I was not given that time. That continues to lead me to believe that there is a deliberate attempt to delay this matter, hence his absence,” he outlined.

Venezuelan national was on Thursday slapped with three charges of illegal gun and ammunition possession when he made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Jesus Rodriquez appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and admitted to two of the charges with the aid of an interpreter.

It is alleged that on October 7, 2018 while in the vicinity of Dukwari Backdam, Cuyuni River, the 27-year-old man had a .38 revolver without being licensed to carry a firearm.

Another charge stated that on the same day at

the same location, he had three rounds of .38 ammunition in his possession.

The Venezuelan was also charged for having in his possession 17 9mm rounds of ammunition along with a 9mm Smith and Wesson semi-automatic pistol.

After admitting to the first two of the three charges, Rodriquez was sentenced to two years in prison for each of the two charges and fined $50,000 for each offence. The sentences will run concurrently.

For the third charge, Rodriquez denied having same in his possession, and was remanded to prison until October 24

when he will make an appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, Police were called in after sounds of loud gunshots were heard coming from the hotel room the accused occupied.

In his defence, Rodriquez told the court that he was in a celebratory mood, and it was customary for Venezuelans to fire shots when celebrating.

The man was not represented by legal counsel.

Among Shadick’s several orders of which she peti-

tioned the court, is to bring the Communities Minister’s alterations into the conformity with Local Democratic Organs Act, Chapter 28:09.

In so doing, the Applicant wants to have Bulkan’s orders declared null and void.

The PPP GECOM Commissioner case outlines that Bulkan failed to issue an order to identify the said boundaries under the Local Democratic Organs Act, making his actions null and void. She has also said that GECOM’s Chief Elections Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield went beyond his exercise of discretion, re-demarcating the existing constituency boundaries as outlined in the orders sought before the court.

The writ had stated that the purported establishment of seven NDCs without complying with the provisions of the Local Democratic Organs Act was unlawful, ultra vires, null, void and of no effect, adding that Lowenfield acted without authorisation in this regard.

Essequibo teacher allegedly drowns after seizure T

he head teacher of the 8th of May Primary School on the Essequibo Coast, Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam) is believed to have drowned after falling into a drain, while suffering an epileptic seizure on Thursday afternoon.

Dead is 43-yearold Seroojanie Singh. <<<<Guyana Times>>>>> understands that the head teacher usually suffers bouts of seizures and is usually accompanied by someone whenever she

goes on the road.

However on Thursday, Singh left her Westbury, Essequibo Coast, school alone and rode on a bicycle to the Flora Nursery in Dartmouth – a half mile journey – to meet with the head teacher of that school.

The incident occurred while Singh was returning to her school sometime around 13:30h. According to information reaching this newspaper, the head teacher suffered a seizure and fell into a nearby drain in Dartmouth Back Street.

Residents immediately rushed to her assistance and she was taken to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity, where she was treated but subsequently died sometime around14:00h.

According to residents, “Miss Rona”, as she was popularly known, was a single-parent who worked very hard as a teacher to provide for her two children who are now adults.

Residents say the community lost a “superwoman” who was always friendly and willing to help others.

GPL pole crashes through roof of Industrial Site home

hevon Harry, her two children and her reputed husband are contemplating alternative sleeping arrangements on Thursday evening after a GPL electric post came crashing through the roof of her apartment at Industrial Site Ruimveldt squatting area.

The mother of a nine-year-old and six-yearold told Guyana Times that she was in the yard washing when the pole came crashing down.

Up to late Thursday, the electric wires and the fuse were seen in the bedrooms of her home.

She claimed several persons in the area called the power company and reported the matter and although a prompt response was promised, up to late Thursday evening, no one visited.

The images provided indicate the woman's house received substantial damage. She told Guyana Times that her two television sets fell to the floor as a result of the impact.

As such, she is calling for full compensation for the damage suffered, adding that the lives of her family were put at risk.

She was, however, thankful that no one was inside the house at the time of the incident. The post was reportedly attached to a section of the John Fernandes Container Yard.

S RAIGHT It is time for some smart financial decisions in GuySuCo

I

Introduction wish Dr Harold Davis the very best of luck because I would not wish his role on my worst enemy today. He has to follow politicians who are clueless and not policy savvy enough to help him in his job, and yet, he is expected to bring stability to what remains of the sugar belt. However, I am expecting him to do much better than his past three predecessors; all of who failed the sugar industry, especially Raj Singh under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Errol Hanoman under the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/ AFC). What these two men have failed to achieve during their tenure resulted in the key managers being totally demotivated which led to their collective disempowerment, which worked against a vision of greater stability in the industry. They failed to lead in a manner that positively affect the psychological turnaround needed in the sugar belt. Because of their failure, today some 8000 families are facing partial starvation. This will always be the legacy of Raj Singh and Errol Hanoman across the sugar industry.

Today we are left with an industry bankrupt in terms of ideas because the best of the team is now long gone.

Those who remain are unable to communicate the solutions effectively across the industry because more people are inwardly focused on protecting themselves rather than on the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). The people in the sugar belt are today living in a culture of fear, which reliably stifle initiatives and solutions. I am hoping that Dr Davis will help change such a situation.

The organisational pathologies associate with failure is very much alive in GuySuCo – financial secrecy, the blame game, avoidance of the issues until it is too late, and most importantly, a feeling of helplessness across top management because of the massive acts of political interference. Again, this started under the PPP but has gotten so much worst under the APNU/AFC-Working People’s Alliance to the point that total war has been declared between Ministers when it comes to how to spend this new loan of GY$30 billion. The stark reality is that these people are more focus on how many of their families and friends can draw from this pot of cash rather than becoming positive enablers for the stabilisation of the sugar industry.

But what is sickening is that top operators in the Granger Government are pushing the line that GuySuCo is worth more dead than alive as a State-owned entity. The natural reaction to such a lack of vision at the top, especially from the workers, is cynicism. So, the norm across GuySuCo is now – showing up for work just for enough hours and days to be able to stay on the payroll for the next year and do the minimum to not get sacked. The fire in the belly is now gone from most of the workers. The spirit of the sugar workers redoubling their efforts in order to expand their earned Annual Performance Incentive is now a distant past, thanks to the key policymakers in the Government. Increasingly the workers are spending their time and energy on self-protectionism rather than joint problem-solving activities at all levels across the industry. That is a recipe for disaster.

But the main killer of the industry is that too many good managers have left the industry for alternative opportunities both locally and overseas. Those few skilled ones who remain had to double up their efforts but there is only so much one can do. A direct outcome from such capacity weakness is that many critical tasks across the industry remain undone.

For example, year after year across the industry, the simple act of “flood fallowing” is not being done at the right pace to increase productivity in the field. If at the start of the process you have poor productivity, how can you expect the factories to produce more sugar from a lower yielding cane? Insanity at its best is alive in GuySuCo today!

Managers today are actively engaging in the mediocre strategy of setting low goals for themselves to guarantee they would achieve them. Can we understand why GuySuCo is set to only produce 92,000 tonnes of sugar in 2018 compared to 216,000 tonnes just four years ago? The capacity is gone, the productivity is gone, and the flames are down to its last flicker in 2018. Unfortunately, some GY$30 billion will be lost as we continue to throw good money away because they cannot get their act together. And why? There is a shortage of adequate smart financial and strategic decision-making capabilities backing the sugar industry in 2018 and that is not about to change in 2019.

UWI student killed while attempting to cross roadway A University of the West Indies (UWI) student, who came to Guyana on vacation, was on Wednesday afternoon killed while attempting to cross the Public Road at Industry, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is 20-year-old Trinidadian national Shivanan Brazlon who was at the time of her demise staying at her boyfriend’s home, at Lot 384 Seventh Field, Cummings Lodge, ECD. Based on information received, the accident occurred about 17:45h after Brazlon and her fiancé, 25-year-old Michael Yearwood, were attempting to cross the said road from north to south.

It was at that time, a motor car bearing registration number PLL 9039 driven by Jonathan Antozak, a pilot of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, reportedly struck her.

The UWI student was picked up, and immediately rushed to the Woodlands Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries about 23:00h.

When Guyana Times visited the Cummings Lodge home where Brazlon was spending time, the father of her

fiancé, Jonathan Yearwood appeared distraught as he said, “It’s a very tragic time for us.”

According to the senior Yearwood, Brazlon arrived in Guyana on October 2 to spend some time with her fiancé. It was also indicated that she was planning to celebrate her 21st birthday on Saturday.

“She came to spend time with her fiancé … It’s an accident and accidents happen. We’re not blaming anyone. We’re not blaming the driver of the car.”

Sources claimed that the driver was recently awarded a scholarship grant to complete his studies and become a pilot. The now dead woman’s relatives reside in Trinidad and family members of the fiancé are hoping that her family would be able to make it for the funeral, since they plan on organising the final rites for Saturday in accordance to Islamic rituals.

“The only relatives she has in Guyana are us,” the senior Yearwood said. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today.

Robberies up by 22% â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Police serious crimes down

T

he Guyana Police Force (GPF) has recorded a nine per cent decrease in serious crimes at the end of September 2018, when compared to the corresponding period last year. However, this reduction comes even as the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier law enforcement agency reports increases in several categories of robberies.

In the monthly crime statistics issued on Thursday, the Force disclosed that there was a 22 per cent increase in robberies, where no instruments were used (39 against 32 cases in the same period last year) and a four per cent

increase in robbery with violence (114 against 110 cases).

However, the other categories of serious crime recorded a declining trend. These include: robbery under arms where firearms were used, which saw a three per cent decline (464 against 477); robbery under arms where instruments other than firearms were used, recording a 20 per cent decrease (177 against 221 cases); a 36 per cent reduction (39 against 61 cases) in robbery with aggravation; and larceny from the person going down by 13 per cent (94 against 108 cases).

Additionally, there were

decreases in burglary, which went down by nine per cent (149 against 163 cases) as well as in break and enter and larceny which declined by 11 per cent (710 against 801 cases).

Meanwhile, as it relates to murder, the Police said there was also a 17 per cent reduction recorded with a total of 72 cases at the end of September 2018, compared to 87 during the same period last year.

A Division (GeorgetownEast Bank Demerara) saw the highest number of murders during this time with 18 cases, followed by C Division (East Coast Demerara) which

had 16 cases and then by B Division (Berbice) with 13 cases.

D Division (West Demerara-East Bank Essequibo) and F Division (Bartica-Interior Locations) recorded nine murder cases each, while E Division (Linden-Kwakwani) had four cases and G Division (Essequibo Coast-Islands) had three cases.

Additionally, it was reported that of the 72 murder cases: 30 were disorderly; 20 were domestic-related; 13 committed during robberies, one execution and eight of unknown nature.

On the other hand, the Police also reported a two per cent increase in rape cases, with 189 so far this year compared to 186 cases recorded during the same period last year.

With regards to the seizure of firearms, a total of 97 illegal weapons were taken off the streets by the end of September. This includes 54 pistols; 22 revolvers; 15 shotguns; five rifles and a sub-machine gun. These figures are similar to the 97 unlicensed guns seized during the corresponding period last year.

Forty-three of these weapons were found in A Division; 17 in F Division; 14 in B Division; 10 in C Division; seven in D Division; four in E Division and two in G Division.

In relation to the traffic statistics at the end of September 2018, there was a 5.7 per cent decrease in fatal accidents with 74 cases resulting in a total of 86 deaths including two children.

However, the Police Force had disclosed that as of Thursday, October 11, 2018, there have been a total of 90 road fatalities thus far this year, with September accounting for a staggering 22 deaths.

Furthermore, it was also reported that there were decreases in serious, minor and damage accidents, with 31.5 per cent (184 cases against 269 last year), 46 per cent (21 against 405 cases) and 27.1 per cent (526 against 722) respectively.

Again, pedestrians were named the main category of

road users killed, with 31 such persons having lost their lives at the end of September. Car occupants followed with 20 cases, then pedal cyclists with 15 cases, and motorcyclists with 11 cases. Additionally, four drivers were killed and one pillion rider, while two minibus occupants and two persons being towed on bicycles also lost their lives on the roadways.

Moreover, the Police noted that speeding continues to be the major contributing factor to road accidents, causing 36 of the fatal accidents that occurred during these nine months. This is followed by inattentiveness with 16 with cases, drunk driving with 12 cases, pedestrians crossing in the path of approaching vehicles with eight cases and one case of failure to confirm to road sign.

In addition, continued traffic enforcement efforts by the Police have resulted in a total of 66,865 cases being made against errant road users as of the end of September.

Of this, a total of 21,910 cases were for speeding; 2928 for driving under the influence of alcohol; 4445 for failure to wear seat belt; 651 for using cellphones while driving; 2194 for tinted vehicles; 1985 for unlicensed driving; 497 for dangerous driving; and 440 for careless driving, among others.

There was an additional 18,670 cases made out against errant road users for other traffic-related matters.

Several arrested as Police continue probe into Corentyne robbery spree

everal persons are now in custody as Police in Berbice continue to investigate a series of robberies over the past few days.

Sources say one of the robberies might have been staged.

Between Monday and Wednesday evening, there were three reported robberies during which firearms were used; one has been reported as a robbery/rape.

A fourth robbery was also reported at Letter Kenny where an aged woman was attacked by a lone bandit and beaten and robbed at her Corentyne home after going outside to pick flowers to pray.

Acting Commander of Berbice, Senior Superintendent Paul Langevine, told Guyana Times that arrests have been made in that matter.

However, he noted that three persons have been arrested and are assisting with the investigation into a robbery at Cromarty Village on Tuesday evening.

During that robbery, three bandits entered a business place and robbed the owner of $280,000. In the process of the robbery, the bandits beat the businessman and shot his son in the face.

Meanwhile, Police are on

the hunt for one more person following the arrest of a man of Whim Village after a mother and daughter were robbed as they returned home from the Berbice Expo on Monday evening. Both men allegedly had firearms as they carried out the robbery.

Following the robbery, the 18-year-old girl was taken to a nearby cemetery and raped by one of the men. Police continue the hunt for the second suspect.

Also on Monday evening, a Black Bush Polder family reported that armed bandits went into their home and robbed them of jewellery and $6 million in cash. The Police say they are continuing the investigation.

While a senior officer said the Police was not going to deny or refute allegations that the robbery was staged, a source close to the investigation told this publication that family members have been giving conflicting statements.

The source noted that a family member has also changed her story, forcing some investigators to believe that the robbery might have been staged. As such, the Commander related that investigations are ongoing.

New state-of-the-art Rice, sugar cannot sustain dental clinic plans Berbice economy – Armogan to transform Guyana

newly-opened stateof-the-art dental clinic located on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) is planning to transform smiles across Guyana through affordable services.

During an interview with the excited staffers who just recently opened the new facility IDental at Lot 11 Public Road, Montrose, ECD, it was explained that the clinic was manned by courteous, well-trained and professional staffers under the supervision and leadership of Dental Surgeon, Dr Steve Baul.

The owner of the facility is a young Guyanese entrepreneur, Karen Manifold, who is no stranger to the field of dentistry. Manifold believes that in order to change the world in which she lives, she has to make people feel confidently beautiful by helping them to achieve ‘simply white’ smiles.

Following the official launch slated for Sunday, October 14, 2018, the dental clinic will be opened from Monday to Wednesday and Friday from 09:00h to 17:00h while on Saturday, it will be opened from 09:00h.

Some of the services that will be offered at the facility include sealants, dental veneers, fixed bridge, teeth

whitening, removable dentures, and cleaning and polishing.

Although these services would not be free, the staffers there assured that the prices were affordable, and as such, encouraged the public to visit the location.

As part of its opening promotions as well as breast cancer awareness observances, the clinic will be offering free dental examinations for interested persons.

Dr Baul said, “The main thing that we are focusing on are the patients and to make sure that they are comfortable with our service and the treatment they get from the moment they call us to when they are finished whatever treatment they would have done”.

He added that the team was quite anxious to be able to treat the folks on the East Coast as it is widely populated and such services were hardly available.

egion Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Chairman David Armogan believes the time has come for the region to diversify its economic base since the economy cannot be sustained by two commodities. Armogan was at the time speaking at the Berbice Expo and Trade Fair which concluded on Monday evening at the Alboin Sports Complex. He noted that for two long, the Berbice economy has been depending on rice and sugar and it is time for the region’s economic base to be diversified to ensure that any decline or price adjustment in those commodities will not give the region an economic shock. “We must find new opportunities; we must look at new opportunities for development because the traditional way of doing things has to change. We are accustomed to doing things today the way our grandparents left it but the situation today is not the same and so we have to think outside of the box,” he said, adding that new ideas and non-traditional businesses is where the focus should be.

putting a dent into the economy and forcing many businesses to downsize.

off a few years ago.”

Armogan explained that in Region Six, there is an abundance of resources, many of which are not being exploited. He urged that they be exploited while noting that non-traditional crops have huge markets in the Caribbean.

According to Armogan, there is a big marker in the Caribbean for vegetables and fruits.

“Nearly all of the coun-

tries in [the Caribbean Community] Caricom have been spending large sums of money importing food from outside of the Region.”

“We expect that the New GMC [New Guyana Marketing Corporation] will come to Berbice, interact with our farmers and make sure that we will be able to move in that direction to produce for the rest of the Caribbean.

Armogan related that opportunities must be created for both small and medium-size businesses. He called on Business Minister Dominic Gaskin to establish a branch of the Small Business Bureau in Region Six. Berbice Expo and Trade Fair was the 14th annual expedition organised by the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce. The four-day Expo opened on Friday last and concluded on Monday with thousands visiting the various booths.

he DDL Foundation makes our dreams possible”, were the words of gratitude uttered

scholarships under the DDL Foundation.

The DDL Foundation is now in its ninth year and, since 2015 when the first awardees graduated high school, the Foundation now accepts new awardees and recognises graduates each year. The scholarship covers the main costs associated with attending school. This in-

cludes books, uniforms, transportation, and meals where necessary. All students who have excelled in the NGSA, and who have demonstrated their need for assistance because of their financial or social constraints, can apply to the Foundation.

The Foundation was launched in December 2010 with the goal of advancing the education of students who

have excelled in the NGSA and have demonstrated a need for assistance.

At a simple ceremony held last Thursday in the Boardroom of Demerara Bank, Chairman of the DDL Foundation, Harryram Parmesar welcomed the recipients and congratulated them on their successes in the NGSA. He challenged that to take full advantage of the opportunities, they are being afforded and advised that they remain focused on their goals. He warned them that it is easy to get distracted now and they “must be very careful to avoid the distractions that are all around.”

The Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited, Komal Samaroo, in his remarks to the recipients noted that the awardees “arrived where they have as a result of past effort.” He added that “the company recognises your talent and effort and we like

to help those demonstrate that they are willing to help themselves but need additional help.” Samaroo closed by saying “It was therefore a joy to able to support their hard work and determined efforts.”

The Foundation comprises mainly volunteers from the DDL staff body and includes a mentorship programme where each child is linked to a mentor who will monitor the performance of the child and provide the necessary moral and other support during the period of their relationship with the Foundation.

While the initial funding was set up by the company, income also comes from employee fundraising activities and donations from employees who donate amounts from their salaries monthly.

Mohabir pledged that he and his “fellow awardees intend to continue to work very hard to remain on top by the time they get to the end of high school.”

Addressing individuals present at the event, High Commissioner Mahalingam noted that Mahatma Gandhi was considered the founder of the non-violence movement. Non-violence is the way of taking positive action to resist oppression or bring about positive change.

Additionally, Head of the Women and Gender Equality Commission, Indra Chandarpal reminded individuals that Dr Cheddi Jagan used a non-violent approach in the 1973 elections, when the Army wanted to take over the ballot boxes.

Former Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, speaking on behalf of the

Guyana Peace Council, thanked the Indian High Commissioner for the informative celebratory Mahatma Gandhi anniversary event.

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India. He died on January 30, 1948, in Delhi. He was a lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who became the leader of the nationalist movement against the British rule of India.

As such, he came to be considered the father of his country. Gandhi is internationally esteemed for his doctrine of non-violent protest (satyagraha) to achieve political and social progress.

UG hosts first-ever mental health fair …targets young people

n observance of World Mental Health Day 2018, the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Health Sciences along with the Department of Public Health hosted the first-ever mental health fair.

Under the theme “Young people and mental health in a changing world”, the event was hosted at the University’s Turkeyen Campus tarmac.

Public Health Head of Department, Dr Michelle James, speaking to Guyana Times exclusively, explained that the first-ever Health Fair was launched, since mental health was a serious issue in Guyana. She also noted that the Faculty has received support from various stakeholders.

The Faculty approached the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), which was represented by Dr

William Adu-Krow, and the Public Health Ministry, along with their stakeholders, to have discussions to host the fair, which is set to be an annual event at the University.

In her feature address at the fair, Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence explained that depression was the third leading cause of mental illness and this was why the World Health Organisation (WHO) focused

on youths for this year’s World Mental Health Day celebrations.

Lawrence added that she was happy that the event was conducted at the University of Guyana where youths were trying to deal with various issues. The Minister expressed her concern about adolescent pregnancy and adolescent suicide, since the present situation was very alarming.

The Public Health Ministry seeks to target students of secondary schools, where teachers are likely to be trained with the aim of recognising and identifying students dealing with mental health issues. Mental illness in Guyana affects nearly one in four people, with women, the unemployed and young adults accounting for over 60 per cent. Less than 10 per cent are being treated, and 4 in 10 have attempted suicide.

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 every year with several activities to mark the occasion.

The Education Ministry expressed gratitude to Massy for their essential collaboration to deal with suicide among students. A representative of the Education Ministry presented the remarks of Education Minister Nicolette Henry, who

was not in attendance. In her message, she urged students to focus on the positive and to be strong while experiencing life challenges. The theatrical performance “Unbreakable”, which was showcased, is a testimony to the young students who are experiencing life challenges. The protagonist, Joy, is mentally drained as her mood throughout the play is one of frustration; however, she does not commit suicide. The message stands out: all is never lost and there is always hope.

According to research conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Guyana's suicide rate has dropped by 32 per cent to 30.2 suicides per 100,000 deaths. Meanwhile, the most recent statistics, released in April 2017, showed that Guyana has the third highest suicide rate in the world.

Contractors to hand over overpasses today – Patterson …vandalism will lead to prosecution

ublic Infrastructure Minister David Patterson has announced that the newly constructed overpasses are set to be handed over today and will be commissioned shortly.

“They will be officially handed over on the 12th [of October]. They will be officially handed over by the contractors. I do suspect that the lifts, solar panels and all the other stuff will be handed over and

we shall open them shortly thereafter.”

Trained persons will also be stationed at each flyover for a period of time to assist pedestrians with the correct use of these structures.

“We’ve been training some youngsters to assist with the operation of the lifts so that persons can know how to do it. They will be stationed at the overpasses, probably 10 persons in shifts. When

GTT restores landline, WiFi services in Kuru Kururu

R

esidents in Kuru Kururu on the Soesdyke Linden Highway are now breathing a sigh of relief as telephone giant, GTT, has finally been able to restore their landline and Internet service after about one month of disruption. A few residents told Guyana Times that they were inconvenienced due to the fact that the services were down, especially those who rely on their telephone and Internet service for a livelihood.

One resident told this newspaper that she was especially grateful since she lives alone and was unable

to make calls using her landline. She said she was praying for the service to return as the crime rate in the area has been increasing and a telephone would be vital if someone decided to rob her home.

Just last week, the Public Relations Officer of GTT, Jasmin Hariss assured this newspaper that the services would have been restored.

Although many residents remain concerned about whether they will receive a bill, others are rejoicing over the restoration.

Guyana Times understands more than 500 residents in Kuru Kururu were

without landline and WiFi services, after a post fell, damaging wires and disrupting service.

Residents who attend the University of Guyana (UG), complained of not being able to use the Internet to complete assignments, while secondary school students chimed in with the same cry.

A business owner in the area who requested her name be withheld, told this newspaper that she relies on the Internet to conduct her daily activities. Now that the services have been restored, the residents are much appreciative.

Ten lifts were sourced from Sweden earlier in the year and two were installed on each side of the crosswalk.

Construction of the pedestrian overpasses commenced mid-last year and was almost completed by December 2017. The con-

tract for the overpasses at Houston, Eccles and Peter’s Hall were awarded to B&J Civil Works for the sum of US$1,034,326.

Meanwhile, there were separate contracts for the Providence and Diamond overpasses which were both awarded to S Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services to the tune of US$364,247 and US$364,727 respectively. The introduction of these overhead passes was intended not only to reduce the high level of road carnage and to eliminate traffic congestion along the East Bank Road, which is said to be the busiest in the country. While many concerns were raised about the large time it takes to climb the flight of stairs, the Public Infrastructure Ministry noted previously that this guarantees their safety than having to cross the roadway amid approaching vehicles.

Nurses to now benefit from Assuria’s insurance programme …preferential rates introduced for Nurses Association

he Nurses Association of Guyana on Thursday signed an official partnership with Assuria Insurance Company, which will see its members benefiting from reduced rates for health, life and motor coverage.

A meeting was convened with officials from both entities and the contractual agreement was signed between the President of the Association, Cleopatra Barkoye and General Manager of Assuria, Yogindra Arjun.

Under the banner “Serve and Protect”, Erwin Daniels of the insurance company explained that this new programme will allow for over 900 nurses to capitalise on quality insurance at an affordable cost.

“It’s through this association that the nurses will now have the opportunity of getting affordable insurance plans at Assuria,” said

Daniels.

He added, “They’ve worked really hard and so their assets need to be protected so what Assuria did was to provide a plan called the ‘serve and protect’ plan because we want to make sure that when the nurses leave their homes, they can be assured that their homes are protected against fire, their car can be protected against vehicle accident and their health is protected.” Meanwhile, similar sentiments were shared by the General Manager of Assuria, Yogindra Arjun, as he stated that this is a good initiative which will benefit nurses tremendously.

“We were delighted to have the opportunity to create a package for the nurses. What our packages does is that for all insurances that we have, the nurses will have preferential rates.”

the Nurses Association of Guyana, Grace Bond, related that it is good to know that these healthcare workers will benefit from a trusted insurance provider and additionally, that their properties are secured.

“Our salary is not that much and so when we find an insurance that is affordable [and] the benefits are great from the explanations that we have had, I know that many persons will sign on to have these benefits from themselves and their families,” Bond posited.

Nurses who are registered with the organisation are urged to take advantage of this deal, which will stabilise their future in the event of any incidents.

Payment plans are “easy” and there will be other savings for the healthcare workers, such as the discounts that will be made available at 75 specified stores.

Delegate # 2 Maya Persaud Confident, ambitious and artistic are a few words that best describe 24-year-old Maya Persaud who hails from Soesdyke, on the East Bank of Demerara, where she and her siblings were single-handedly raised by their mother.

She nevertheless got enrolled at School of the Nations, where she obtained her business diploma in business studies.

Singh was taken on as a work-study student at Demerara Distillers Limited after which she was employed by the same company. After sometime, she was contracted by Demerara Bank Limited and she is now employed at the Guyana Revenue Authority.

This Guyanese beauty is very fond of travelling with her friends and family, watching movies, shopping and also dancing.

She is a lead dancer of a well-known Bollywood dance group called the “Ishara Dance Troupe”.

Despite her strong involvement in numerous activities, she always manages to remain a diligent and focused student. She was mostly interested in the business area, and has always aspired to be the entrepreneur of a fashion boutique since being in style with what’s trending has always been her fetish.

Proud Alumna of The Bishops’ High School, this energetic young humanitarian is the founder of the Inter-Environmental Club in 2014, which promotes protecting and preserving the environment while helping the community.

This one act of humanity led her toward receiving the prestigious community service plaque from The Bishops’ High Old Students Association. Mukhram is the holder of an Associate’s Degree of Arts in Economics (CAPE) in addition to being awarded 13 CSEC subjects, including 5 Distinctions.

This enthusiastic youth counsellor and programme coordinator organises weekly classes, motivational sessions and workshops, monthly haircuts for the children, birthday parties, game days and movie days aimed towards reminding and showing the children that they are still loved and cared for; and can be reintegrated into society.

After obtaining 10 passes at the CSEC examination, Mohamed is currently enrolled as an Association of Business Executives (ABE) student at the School of the Nations to gain her Associate Degree in Business Management. It is her hope to read for her Master’s in Business Management in the future.

amiera Kippins, Guyana’s representative to the Miss Earth Pageant that is currently ongoing in the Philippines has copped the gold medal for her National Costume during the competition on Wednesday evening.

The competition was done by continent and Guyana topped for South America. Coming in with the Bronze medal was Miss Peru and Silver is Ecuador.

Kippins’ costume depicted Guyanese Folklore, “Ole Higue”. The “Ole Higue” is a shape-shifting creature of folklore that appears in the form of a solitary old woman by day. During the night however, she strips herself of her wrinkled skin and puts it in a mortar.

This causes her to reveal her true form, a ball of fire. As a fireball, she can fly across the dark sky in search of unsuspecting victims. “Ole Higues” can enter the homes of her victims through the use of any size of hole with direct access to the interior of the house.

Virat Kohli criticises quality of SG ball, and prefers the Dukes for Test cricket

I

ndia captain Virat Kohli has criticised the quality of the SG ball used for Tests in India, saying that it gets scuffed up too early and brings down players' performance significantly as a result. He vouched for the Dukes ball to be used uniformly in Test matches around the world.

The SG ball has been used for Test cricket in India, but it has come under scrutiny lately. Offspinner R Ashwin said he was "pretty disappointed" with it after the Rajkot Test against West Indies, and now Kohli is also suggesting its quality has declined.

Virat Kohli has backed R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to come good in Australia, because of their ability to put "revolutions on the ball". "You look at guys who are putting revs on the ball, that's something that I feel always works in overseas conditions.

Guys who can get the ball to bite off the pitch are the ones to succeed not just in the Indian conditions but overseas as well.

"If you see someone like Moeen [Ali] and the way he bowls, it's the pace on the ball that puts you in doubt. And a little bit of an area if provided, then that can create doubts in your head because of the pace that they [spinners] have on the ball. I think Ash [Ashwin] did that beautifully in England, he bowled quicker than he used to and something that he has added to his game. Jaddu [Jadeja] obviously is the bowler who has always done that. I think these two guys are equipped to do the job for us in any conditions."

"To have a ball scuffed up in five overs is not something that we have seen before," Kohli said. "The quality of the ball used to be quite high before and I don't understand the reason why it's gone down. A Dukes ball is

still good quality, Kookaburra is still good quality - whatever limitations a Kookaburra might have, the quality is never compromised.

"The Dukes, I think, is the most suited ball for Test match cricket and if there's a situation, I would vouch for that to be used all over the world because of the consistency of the ball and how the bowlers are in the game at any stage because the seam is so hard and upright.

"And [for] the spinners as well, if the ball is hard you can get that extra pace, but if the ball goes so soft in 10-12 overs, then your effort comes down by 20%. So I think the quality of the ball has to be maintained, there's no doubt about that. Otherwise, you have too many dead sessions in a Test match, which you don't want to see. You want to see exciting cricket and guys working hard for runs, being in the battle all day.

I totally agree with Ash [Ashwin]."

At present, it is only England that regularly uses the Dukes ball for Test cricket, with West Indies occasionally trying it out. Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka generally play with the Kookaburra, which at the moment, is Ashwin's favourite. "Right now I would say the Kookaburra red ball is a lot better than most of them.

Dukes is also right up there," Ashwin said while speaking to Sanjay Manjrekar on Star Sports after the Rajkot Test. "I'm pretty disappointed with the way the SG ball is at this point of time. When I started playing first-class cricket,

the SG ball used to be top-notch, and you could bowl with it even after the 70th or the 80th over. The seam used to be standing up strong and straight, but it's not the same anymore."

Shifting focus to the second Test against West Indies, starting on Friday, Kohli was thrilled with the way the younger players in the team were

performing. India have opted for the same XII as the Rajkot Test, meaning 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw has once again beaten Mayank Agarwal to a place in the XI. "This guy [Shaw] is supremely talented and he has got great ability as everyone saw," Kohli said. "We definitely think he has it in him to play at the highest level and he can repeat what he did in the first game.

He is a very keen learner and a sharp guy. He understands situations well.

We shouldn't compare to him to anyone yet. We shouldn't put him in a space where he feels the pressure of any kind. He should be left in a space where he enjoys his cricket and slowly grows into a player we all believe he can."

That the team's rookies appear better equipped to take on the strain of playing international cricket may be because of the level of cricket they get to play while coming through the ranks. Shaw, for example, has been a prominent member of the A team ever since he led India to victory in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup and opened regularly for Delhi Daredevils in this year's IPL. Don't compare Prithvi Shaw with anyone, give him space to grow - KohliThe India captain says Shaw has got great ability and has what it takes to play at the highest level "Definitely [it] could be one of the reasons because they're already exposed to the environment that an international game would replicate," Kohli said. always the pressure of playing for the country. When you get that cap in the morning of the game, there are always butterflies in the stomach.

Everyone feels that pressure but I'm sure it's not as intense as [it was] 1015 years back when you didn't have any exposure in this kind of cricket and suddenly you were put out there in a Test match making your debut for India - the highest or toughest thing there could be."

Very little can beat experience though and Kohli relied on it to score his 24th Test century in Rajkot, where 99 of his 139 came through singles, twos and threes. "You have to realise that by the time the middle order walked in at that game, the ball was soft. The pitch was not as quick, the harder ball comes onto the bat, so you have more boundary opportunities.

I think that [scoring runs without taking many risks] has probably come with the experience of playing so many games. You can run your way to a hundred as well. There's no harm in that and I think with that mindset you understand your game, that you can bat all day, you can bat for two days and just score in singles and doubles, you don't necessarily need to hit a boundary. And if you are convinced about that in your own head, then the bowler gets to know as well and then the battle of patience starts.

"So I think you have to be convinced first that you can play all day with singles and doubles, and not necessarily wanting to hit big shots, but given an opportunity, obviously, you'll cash in on the loose balls. I think that's probably the balance in Test match batting that I've experienced and something that you have to keep switching according to the conditions that you're playing in." (ESPNcricinfo)

Nurmagomedov: UFC fighter threatens to quit UFC in support of teammate U

FC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov has threatened to quit the sport should they fire a team-mate for his role in scenes that marred the end of the Russian's win over Conor McGregor.

Nurmagomedov leapt from the octagon to challenge a member of McGregor's entourage after beating the Irishman to retain his world lightweight title.

McGregor fought with his rival's camp as brawls broke out around the venue.

Fighter Zubaira Tukhugov was one of those alleged to have hit McGregor.

His forthcoming fight against Artem Lobov at the end of October has since been cancelled.

McGregor and Nurmagomedov had to be parted at their weighing in

Nurmagomedov believes his compatriot is being penalised for his role in events at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, add-

ing he would stand up to any further sanctions.

"Decide to fire him, you should know that you'll lose me too," he wrote in an

He added: "Why do you have to punish my team, when both teams fought?"

Tukhugov is alleged to

have jumped into the cage following Nurmagomedov's win and punched McGregor in the back of the head.

Nurmagomedov, 30, said: "We never give up on our brothers in Russia and I will go to the end for my brother.

The scenes at the weekend were the culmination of a long-running row between Nurmagomedov and McGregor.

In April, McGregor travelled from Dublin to Brooklyn to confront

Nurmagomedov and his team, after footage emerged of them surrounding and intimidating the Irishman's team-mate Lobov in a hotel.

McGregor attacked a bus with Nurmagomedov and several of his team-mates on - he was subsequently arrested and found guilty of disorderly conduct for his actions and sentenced to community service.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which sanctioned last weekend's bout, has withheld Nurmagomedov's fight purse while it investigates the matter.

In an encounter between New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) and the Canje Secondary School (CSS) at the Rose Hall Canje Welfare Ground, NATI defeated CSS by 203 runs on the back of Garfield Benjamin’s superb century.

Batting first under bright sunshine, NATI racked up 267 all out in their allotted 30 overs. One of Berbice’s finest youth batsmen, Benjamin scored a belligerent 124, which included

10 classy fours and 9 huge maximums. The opening batsman got support from the former Berbice Under-19 all-rounder Keith Simpson, who scored an attractive 55, which was laced with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Carl Gilgeous was the pick of the CSS bowlers, picking up 3 wickets while Jovan Persaud supported with 2 wickets.

In CSS’s reply, they failed to get off to a flying start as spinners Brandon Stewart and Simon Naidu spun webs all over the CSS batsmen, who seemed to have had on their dancing shoes. The former Berbice Under-17 player Brandon Stewart scrambled 4-23 in his quota of 6 overs while Simon Naidu bowled very economically, picking up 3-10 in his 6 overs for NATI. icketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant will be in line to make his ODI debut after he was picked in the 14-man squad for the first two matches against West Indies. In Pant, India have a chance to not only trial a new wicketkeeper in ODIs but also an explosive batsman in the middle order.

The search for a solid No. 4 continues though with Manish Pandey and Ambati Rayudu likely to get chances to stake their claim during the West Indies series. Since the end of the 2015 World C u p ,

India have tried 11 players at this position but Prasad said "we are very close" to finalising India's best options in the middle order. "It's been in the debate for some time and we have really closed in on couple of names."

The ODI series against West Indies begins on October 21 in Guwahati before moving to Visakhapatnam on October 24. The last three ODIs are scheduled to be played in Pune, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.

he Kennard Memorial Turf Club, at Bush Lot on the Corentyne Coast in East Berbice, is scheduled to host its pre-Diwali Horse Race Meet on October 21, with more than 30 entries already received for the card, which consists of six categories. Interested persons wanting to enter their horses are asked to do so immediately.

Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, Retired Justice Cecil Kennard stated that the horse race meet was set to be exciting, as horse-racing enthusiasts should expect some of Guyana’s top horses taking part. Even

though 30 horses have been confirmed, he expects at least 50 horses to have been signed up when entries close. Justice Kennard went on to identify some of the horses participating in the meet: Miss Olympic, Got To Go, Goodwill Boy, Plain Land, Lucky Star, Seven Dust, Not This Time, Slim Shady, Mister Stanley and many more.

Jockeys will be competing for the grand prize in the H & Lower race, which carries the most attractive top prize – $250,000; then there is the 2-Year Guyana-Bred (Maiden), which will see the winner carting off a hand-

There is also the ‘L NonEarner 2018’ race, which will see the victor receiving a first-place prize of $100,000; and there is the L Open, which has a top prize of $140,000.

he Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday last bowled off yet another tournament in its historic calendar year. This time around, it hosted the first round of the Pepsi 50-Over Tournament.

The Tournament is being contested by 11 First-Division teams on a round-robin basis. The teams vying for the top prize are divided into two zones with Zone A consisting of six teams and Zone B, five teams. Albion Community Centre, Port Mourant Cricket Club, Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club and Young Warriors Cricket Club all registered victories in the first round.

Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets cricket team drew the bye while the Blairmont Community Centre vs West Berbice match was postponed due to the Elizabeth Styles Under-21 Tournament Final.

At the Number 69 Ground, former Berbice batsman Kandasammy Surujnarine stroked a majestic 132 which included 13 boundaries as Albion Community

Centre amassed 236 all out. Kevin Umroa supported with 38, as Omesh Khemraj (3-26); Latchman Roopchand (2-42) and Naeem Yacoob (2-17) bowled well for Upper Corentyne.

In response, the home team were bowled out for 196 in 46.2 overs as Devendra Budhoo (71); Terrence Budhoo (36); Latchman Roopchand (18) and Lakeram Latchman (17) batted well.

At the Cumberland Ground, the Young Warriors Cricket Club making a grand return to Berbice First-Division Cricket defeated Police Cricket Club by 65 runs. Young Warriors made 169 all out in 41 overs, with Kassim Khan (79), Seon Hetmyer (24) and Suresh Dhanai (16) being the top scorers as Jamal Jarvis (3-30) and Brentnol Woolford (32) bowled well for the lawmen. In reply, Police Cricket Club was bowled out for 104 in 29 overs, as only Delbert Hicks (36) and Brentnol Woolford (12) reached double figures. Kassim Khan (3-21); Trevlon Stanislaus (3 -15) and Linden Austin (2-19) were the main bowlers who destroyed the Police batting line-up.

pin-twins Nosthusha Kenjige and Timil Patel combined to help the United States of America (USA) to an 88run victory over Leeward Islands Hurricanes while Barbados Pride lost to the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) Marooners during Wednesday’s action.

At the Kensington Oval, Barbados, the left-arm spinner Kenjige and leg-spinner Patel shared five wickets and backed up the work of their side’s pace bowling attack, as the Americans claimed their first victory of the tournament.

Kenjige snared 3-22 from eight overs to earn the Player-of-the-Match award, and Patel completed a tidy

all-round performance with 2-4 from 2.1 overs to confine a potential Hurricane threat during their pursuit of the 198 target.

Orlando Peters hit 6 boundaries in the top score of 37 from 35 balls, but no other batsman reached 20, as the Hurricanes were bowled out for 109 in 30.1 overs. Patel was one of a handful of United States batsmen that got starts, but failed to carry on, leading the way with a circumspect 39 from 80 balls.

Monank Patel scored 27, Steven Taylor made 22 and Alex Amsterdam got 21. In –form leg-spinner Damion Jacobs was the pick of the Hurricanes bowlers with 3-40 from 10 overs,

while Windies A all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall, Jeremiah Louis and Chesney Hughes supported with two wickets apiece.

In a fire-cracker over at the Three W’s Oval, in the second Group B contest, Carlos Brathwaite played another captain’s knock to lead the CCC Marooners to a breezy 7-wicket victory over his country team, Barbados Pride.

Despite a star-studded team, the Pride, who remain without a win in three matches, felt the brunt of Brathwaite who struck three fours and three sixes in an unbeaten, even 50 from 31 balls, as the Marooners successfully chased 175 for victory.

He shared a 90-run – unbroken – fourth-wicket partnership with Jonathan Drakes, who stroked 41 from 46 balls, including four boundaries. Marooners had a strong start with openers Kyle Corbin and Kjorn Ottley piling on 70 before they were dismissed and the home team stumbled to 88 for three in the 20th over.

The Windies T20 skipper then joined Drakes as they carried the Marooners over the finish line in the 32nd over. There was neither substance nor stability from the Pride, after they were sent in to bat, except for a period when Kevin Stoute joined left-hand opener Shayne Moseley and they put on 40 for the fourth wicket.

Moseley made 49 from 87 balls to lead the way, Stoute supported with 37, Shamar Springer got 22 and Windies pacer Miguel Cummins made a useful 20.

indward Islands Volcanoes were deprived of some valuable points after rain ruined their game against Windies B a few nights ago at the Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago.

The champs are currently in third place with 7 points, but will be feeling robbed after Tuesday’s no-result match saw a few points being shaven off. Chasing what looked like a modest 221, given their recent batting performances, Volcanoes had cruised to 49-0 after just 7 overs when rain ended proceedings.

With their next match against Canada on Saturday, the champs would have been happy to secure a win while affording their batters more play-time on the field. Each team gained a point, following the no-result ,leaving the defending champions, trailing the second placed Guyana Jaguars by 3 points and table-leaders Trinidad Red Force, who are unbeaten, by 6.

fter a humbling defeat at the hands of the Indians, a shaken up Windies will look to rebound in a major way as they prepare to lock up in the second Test which bowls off from October 12-16 at Hyderabad.

The Windies were crushed by a whopping innings and 272-run margin after a number of centuries were scored by India Captain Virat Kohli, debutant Prithiv Shaw and all-rounder Ravi Jadeja who scored his maiden Test ton.

The second Test will be crucial for the Windies after they have been outplayed in virtually both departments.

It was important for the visitors to have a firsthand look at the ruthless Indians in their own backyard as they would have learnt a little when it comes to reassessing their approach for over the weekend.

“Ignite” races boosted by Kobras, Colts record ExxonMobil & Hand-in-Hand victories in GABA League T W

ith just one more month to go before the engines are accelerated and the South Dakota Circuit come alive once more, the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) “Ignite” race meet has been boosted by two more formidable sponsors.

The highly-anticipated race meet slated for November 10 and 11 will be the homestretch of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) 2018. The meet, which is being hosted in collaboration with the Business Ministry’s Department of Tourism, will see participation from racers in the US, Canada, Europe, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

Seeing that they still had time to be a part of the motor racing action, oil and gas giant ExxonMobil and insurance pioneer Hand-in-Hand have thrown their support behind the event.

Over at its New Market Street location, ExxonMobil’s Community Relations and Communications Manager Nicholas Yearwood handed over the sponsorship cheque to GMR&SC’s Sherry Gonsalves.

Meanwhile, at Hand-inHand’s Avenue of the Republic office, the company’s Business Development Manager, Savita Singh presented GMR&SC’s Saurica Singh with its sponsorship donation.

Singh noted that the insurance giant was elated to be part of such an exciting venture.

Additionally, she explained that she was eager to attend the races which are quickly becoming a calendar event in Guyana.

Also on board for the weekend of races are Miracle Opticle, Stag Beer, GUYOIL, Ramada Hotel, GBTI, Air Services Limited, BM Soat, Club 704, SuperBet, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Survival Supermarket, Noble House Seafoods, Palm Court, and KGM Security Service.

The November weekend’s activities will feature Groups 1-5 as well as the Superstocks and SR3 radicals. In addition to this, there will be local clashes on show, which will involve Superstock motorcycles.

Tickets for the “Ignite” race meet are currently on sale at the GMR&SC office on Thomas Lands. Adult tickets are priced at $2500, while children’s are $1000.

he Colts played the Eagles and the Guardians clashed with the Kobras in the first-division leg of the Rainforest Water/Malta Supreme/Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) tournament on Wednesday at the Burnham Hard Court in Georgetown.

In the first match of the night, the Colts scraped a 75-74 win against the Eagles. The Colts started off the first period in a deficit as the Eagles led them 17-5; however, they managed to bounce back in the second and third periods leading 21-12 and 2317 respectively. But even though the Eagles won the last round 17-20, all credit was given to the excellent play of the Colts Captain Shaine Webster, who scored 16 points and was ably supported by Evans Johnson (13) and Jonathan Mangra (13). Scoring for the Eagles was Travis Belgrave with 23 points, but even with support from Michael Richards (13) and Captain Louis James (11), they still weren’t able to overcome the Colts.

In the second match, the Kobras struck early to defeat the in-form Guardians 74-67. It was all thanks to their commanding lead in the first period (18-9) that gave them the match as the Guardians returned in

the second period to level the score 19-19. The Guardians then won the third round 20-19, but it still wasn’t enough for them to make it over the line. For the Guardians, it was once again Mr Consistent, Nikkolai Smith, who scored 25 points in a losing effort. He was supported by Trenton Woolford (14) and Marlon Chesney (10). The Colts played as a

unit converting every pass and making the best of the opportunities and that was reflected in the scoresheet with Captain Carlos Edwards pulling 17; Garfield Greenville 17; and Jermaine Slater 13.

The matches will continue on Saturday with the Pacesetters taking on the Eagles in the first and second divisions.
