ttorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall has stated that Glenn Lall, publisher of the Kaieteur News, engages in journalistic impropriety and intimidation, adding that the newspaper is used to orchestrate personal attacks on public officials and law abiding citizens.

Nandlall’s accusations came on the heels of a sensational article published in July 31 edition of the Kaieteur News under the headline, “Men in Anil Nandlall’s vehicle terrorise Kaieteur News staff”.

In a statement to the media, Nandlall said he recalled receiving a text message from Lall and a call from Kaieteur News’ Editor-in-Chief Adam Harris on Monday, informing him that persons were in a vehicle (which they claimed belonged to him) taking photos of the Kaieteur News headquarters and premises on Saffon Street, Charlestown.

He said he explained to Harris that he was several miles away from the vicinity of those premises, and

he was utilising a vehicle that was different in make, colour and year of manufacture.

Despite the newspaper’s allegation that a gun was in the possession of one of the occupants of the car, the Attorney General said that this was not brought to his attention via the text message or phone call from Lall and Harris.

“In any event, assuming that Mr Glenn Lall and Mr Adam Harris were correct in their information to me, it is not against any law to take out a photograph of any person, building or vehicle. Armed with that belief, I assumed that the matter was put to rest, as it is so trivial,” the Attorney General said.

Vengeful

Nandlall said he is inclined to believe that Lall was abusing the notion of press freedom enjoyed by local media operatives, as this is not the first time that Lall has utilised his newspaper as a weapon to attack him, while pursuing a personal “vengeful agenda”.

He based his arguments on some developments which took place back in 2007, when he said Lall misused his media power and freedom to again jeopardise the integrity and character of public officials.

The Legal Affairs Minister recalled that on or around July 2007, while his brother was a senior functionary at Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL), he led a team of investigators who conducted an inspection at the Kaieteur News office building at Saffon Street.

It was discovered that a GPL meter was deliberately bypassed and electricity was being consumed illegally, Nandlall said in his

statement. He said that as a result, Kaieteur News was back billed to the tune of in excess of $7 million.

“Mr Glenn Lall attempted to compromise the integrity of my brother so as to avoid payment of the arrears. My brother rejected all his entreaties. He threatened my brother to use his newspaper to destroy him. Although I was wholly unconnected with this event, he called my law office and issued a similar threat to me,” the Attorney General contended.

In another incident, Stabroek News reported that in January 2009, a stolen GPL transformer was found at the Regent Multiplex Mall, widely believed to be owned by Lall.

Nandlall further explained that on July 22, 2007, the Kaieteur News carried a front page headline that he was wanted by the Police in relation to a vehicular accident.

“It was a total fabrication,” he explained, stating that “a vehicle owned by my wife was involved in an accident. I was not the driver and therefore could not be of any assistance to the Police”.

Nandlall is also alleging that Lall has used his newspaper in a similar fashion to that incident to launch other malicious attacks against his brother.

Lall was eventually sued for libel.

Vendetta

The Attorney General insisted that over the last year and for reasons unknown to him, Lall, has renewed his agenda of vendetta.

“He has since included my friend, Mr Clifton Bacchus, the owner of Sleepin Hotel in his libellous assault. We have both

sued him and obtained injunctions against him. Yet, he persists with libellous publications. Mr Bacchus has filed contempt proceedings against him and Mr Adam Harris. Those proceedings are pending. This is the latest act of retaliation,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Nandlall explained that he is not gullible and therefore cannot accept the explanation offered many times by the newspaper editor that he is somehow “innocent” and “simply carrying out directions” whenever concerns are raised over the gutter and yellow journalism tactics being employed by the newspaper.

“These are two gentlemen, who earn their livelihood by slaughtering the character and reputation of others and when there is a slightest evidence of a reaction, they cowardly run for cover, using the innocent workers of Kaieteur News as their shield,” the Attorney General said.

Emancipation Day T

oday is Emancipation Day. On August 1, 1834, exactly 180 years ago, 83,545 slaves (according to one source) were declared “free”. The word is within scare quotes because in reality, they had to serve an “apprenticeship” for another four years.

What that meant was they would now be paid wages during that time, but it gave the planters time to make arrangements to undercut their bargaining power to demand a “living wage”. The “arrangement”, which worked for the planters, was the importation of indentured labour of, in sequential order, Portuguese, East Indians and Chinese origin.

Emancipation Day is a seminal day in the history of this country, and it is one during which all peoples should reflect on the society we would wish to create now that we are presumably “independent” and in control of our destinies.

The first point we should consider is the fact that the emancipation proclamation declared, “Compensation in the form of a free gift of £20 million English (now worth about US$25 billion) should be paid to the slave owners for the loss of their slaves.” The slaves that enriched Britain (and the Netherlands before them) did not even get a firm handshake.

But unlike the stereotypes that abound today, the exslaves during the “apprenticeship” periods saved their meagre wages and in 1838, launched one of the most incredible initiatives in human history: they began what is now referred to as “the village movement”.

Maybe apocryphally, it is said they took their money in wheelbarrows to pay for abandoned sugar plantations – the first one being Northbrooke on the East Coast of Demerara.

It was renamed “Victoria” in honour of the then reigning Queen of England. The slaves were not aware that it was more because of cold, economic calculus that the proffered “humanitarian” reasons that slavery had been abolished.

In building those villages, in the light of recent events, we have to also point out that they also introduced democracy into this country because it was in accordance with these principles that the villages made their decisions. We will not dwell too much as to how the early entrepreneurial spirit that created the village movement – and the collateral efforts to launch self sustaining economic schemes – were stymied by the ruling planter class, that was determined to destroy any effort not linked to serving the sugar industry.

We do so, because we believe that in the present there is now the opportunity to fan the flames of that spirit so that the descendants of those pioneers can at last echo that great American, Dr Martin Luther King and shout, “Free at last! Free at Last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

While the entrepreneurial spirit can be dampened, it can never die, because it is part and parcel of the human condition. Its practical application within diverse circumstances can also be taught. It is for this reason that this newspaper has made a concerted effort to encourage the Education Ministry to launch the CAPE Entrepreneurship syllabus this year.

Secondly, there is the struggle for Reparations that all Guyanese must support. Back in March 2007, as British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed “deep regret and sorrow” for his country’s role in the African slave trade, then President Bharrat Jagdeo retorted to then resident British High Commissioner Fraser Wheeler: “Now that some members of the international community have recognised their active role in this despicable system, they need to go one step further and support reparations. Otherwise, their remarks about the horrors of the slave trade and slavery become meaningless and platitudinous, and such remarks may be expressed merely to absolve guilt.”

Thirdly, there is the Reparations Movement that was launched by Caricom Heads of Government, last year, which can provide the wherewithal – at long last – to the descendants of those slaves to fund their quest for real emancipation.

Opportunistic policing offered by crazy road signs in Berbice

Dear Editor, Among others, I have been writing about the crazy, nonsensical and misleading road signs in Berbice with the hope that the responsible authorities will take the necessary corrective action.

Unfortunately, to date there has been no noticeable action except that the traffic policemen and policewomen have apparently become more zealous in extracting fines from hapless drivers.

One of the latest hunting grounds for the traffic Police in Berbice is the stretch of road between New Amsterdam and Palmyra, where they surreptitiously pounce upon motorists who supposedly exceed 50 km per hour.

In this regard, can the Traffic Chief please enlighten the public which one

These two signs present an obvious dilemma for the drivers who, it would appear, disregard the lower limit indicated on the first Pepsi signboard in favour, obviously, of the upper limit allowed in the second Government signboard.

Under normal circumstances one might ignore the craziness described above.

However, our over-zealous traffic Police insist on motorists observing the lower speed limit written on the Pepsi sign while ignoring the upper limit printed on the Government sign. I believe this is more than a sign of opportunistic policing.

Let us pardon those who wrong us Dear Editor, The rift is evident and the harshness is pronounced, the spirit among the supporters of Mr Aubrey Norton seemed subdued, the supporters of Mr David Granger were victorious, ecstatic and joyful.

It was a race for high stakes, a race to determine the course of their entire life.

At the race’s end, the price for winning included compliments and insults, telling glances, pelting glasses, physical assaults, countless violation of body and soul.

Extreme nudity splashes itself unchecked. Fear and suspicion on both sides

lurk, commitments are tepid, or all too fragile. In the midst of this all, the blogs, the media and most important the conscious minority are in shock, carried and perplexed.

The politics of the world is changing rapidly, violence, intimidation and aggression seems to be the factors to influence.

Good people are no longer needed, society is in chaos. Look around the world the images are heartbreaking.

Nevertheless, as bad as it seems there is hope, the good must take the helm.

They cannot leave it to the Godless.

One of the great minds of

all times, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people, but the silence over that by the good people”.

My God-blessed country is full of good people; good people in every field. The sad reality is that our politicians of today cannot find common ground on many issues.

I hope that I can live to see a real united government and opposition where we can all work together for the benefit of humanity and our nation.

Many prominent politicians, media personnel and letter writers are calling for a more confrontational, mili-

tant politics.

I am not in favour of this, we must pursue the path of compromise, and we must build on our gains and correct our shortcomings.

Let us pardon those who wrong us, reach out to those who cut us off and be nice to those who threat us badly.

Let us exude mercy, be sincerely grateful and discern intelligently. Life is full of pit falls, but I still have confidence in our leaders.

May God bless you all and guide you to the path of love and togetherness and cause you to function for the benefit of all the people.

Housing Ministry celebrates Emancipation Linden Primo charged with

he Housing and Water Ministry on Thursday held its Emancipation Day celebration in observance of the 176th Anniversary of the abolition of slavery, with the gathering being given a brief history of slavery and Emancipation.

The event saw cultural

performances in the form of dance, poetry, song and drumming by the Ministry’s choir, Phenomenal Dance Group and Magic Fingers Drumming School.

Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali said Guyanese must not only look at Emancipation in the context of slavery, because

they would never know what it meant to the global community, the struggle for independence, freedom, liberation and to create an equitable world.

“We should never confine Emancipation to the boundaries of slavery….

Emancipation indeed ensured that a way was paved

that led not only to freedom from slavery, but a global yearning for freedom from oppression,” Minister Ali pointed out.

Minister Ali noted that there is still oppression as persons are still fighting to be free in their own homeland. The inhumane system of slavery was abolished on August 1, 1834 in all British colonies, including British Guiana, now Guyana.

As Guyanese celebrate, he said that one must reflect on the personal commitment, hardships and sacrifices that were made to emancipate the slaves, and most importantly, the emancipation that took place in the hearts and mind of the people all across the different races around the world.

Speaking on the great cohesion that exists among Guyanese, Minister Ali said: “The freedom that was brought to us saw an additional freedom of which we could celebrate each other’s culture and sometimes we take that for granted,” the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported him as saying.

State media report on killing was prepared in advance – Father Rodrigues

atholic Priest and educator Father Malcolm Rodrigues on Thursday told the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry that there was something amiss about the report on state radio on the death of Dr Walter Rodney, since it described particulars that were not true.

According to him it suggested that that report was compiled even before Dr Rodney was killed, further suggesting that the historian’s death was well orchestrated. Appearing on the third day of the fourth session of the Walter Rodney Inquiry, Father Rodrigues reflected on the events leading up to the death of Dr Rodney, including the political atmosphere at the time.

On the evening of Friday June 13, 1980, Rodrigues said he was at church when he received news that Dr. Rodney had died in an explosion. He said he was asked to transport the historian’s wife and children to their home. The Catholic Priest told the Commission that he had become a close friend of the Rodney family, and had spent that night at the home, as Rodney’s widow Patricia was too distraught and the children, perplexed.

The first call for the night he explained was from a group of police officers who had come with a warrant to the home to carry out investigations. He informed the commission too of the visit by the members of the United States Embassy, who had come to express condolences to the

family. But questions were posed by the Commission’s chairman, seeking to ascertain whether that visit by the US representatives was an indication that the US intelligence was rather seeking to confirm Rodney’s death. He could not say.

The following morning at 06:00h, a press release was read on the radio newscast from the police stating that they were still trying to identify the person involved in the explosion, whose face was damaged beyond recognition.

But Father Rodrigues said his curiosity peaked when he visited the morgue a few minutes later and found that Rodney’s face had not been disfigured as was reported.

Body identification

In the room, Father Rodrigues reported, he was greeted by three policemen guarding the body. He said he told the Pathologist Dr. Mootoo, that he couldn’t understand why the police could not identify the body.

According to him, looking at the body, the smallest schoolchild coming off the streets could have identified the body.

He said it was at that point it became clear to him, that the police report had to have been prepared prior to the actual event. According to him, the police were told that the explosive was hidden in the walkie talkie, which Dr. Rodney was expected to have on him, and no doubt using, would have resulted in his face being blown apart. According to him, it was very unfortunate for the military arm of the govern-

ment, whom he believed had worked in concert with the government, since, according to Rodney’s younger brother Donald, the device was lying in Rodney’s lap when it exploded.

Meanwhile, in further evidence given by the former WPA member, Father Rodrigues reflected on the dictatorial leadership of the late Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, whom it is said had harboured some amount of animosity against the Working People’s Alliance and the work of Dr. Walter Rodney.

Rodrigues recalled that Prime Minister Forbes Burnham had publicly announced that he had a “hand in every home”. This he said was demonstrated by his decision to nationalize all private schools and provided exercise books with his face printed on the cover.

During his cross examination, lawyer for the PNC Basil Williams put it to the Priest that Burnham’s face was on

the cover of the exercise books because he (Burnham) wanted to reinforce that the country had gained its independence from British rule, which at that time, had occurred 10 years prior. However, Father Rodrigues maintained that the Guyanese leader was doing all he could to register the power he claimed he possessed.

He spoke too of the banning of basic commodities, which had become, so unbearable; many persons lost their lives in desperate efforts to acquire items that were imported from neighboring Suriname.

On June 13, 1980, a bomb, planted in a walkie talkie exploded on the lap of Dr Walter Rodney as he sat in his brother’s car outside the Georgetown’s prison.

The device was reportedly given to him by an army sergeant, William Gregory Smith, who, reports say had been used by the PNC government to assassinate its main political opponent.

Congress Place shooting

inden Primo, the man who reportedly fired a shot during the outof-control People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) elections on Sunday was on Thursday charged with threatening behaviour when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Primo is a security guard attached to the Mahdia Gold Corporation. The Magistrate released him on his own recognizance and set his next court date for August 4.

Police court facts state that Primo, 55, threatened Akeshaw Barker at Congress Place, the Headquarters of PNC, located at Sophia Greater Georgetown. According to Police, the woman alleged she had gone to the auditorium at Congress Place when Primo whipped out a gun from his waist and pointed it in her direction and allegedly discharged a round.

PNCR leaders had said that Primo was part of the security detail of the Returning Officer for the elections and he had responded by firing to prevent a stampede caused by delegates of Linden, who claim disenfranchisement at the Congress.

Moments before boarding a Caribbean Airlines Flight destined for the John F Kennedy International Airport on Tuesday, Primo was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). Following the shooting incident, Police had conducted searches for Primo, but he disappeared until his arrest on Tuesday evening.

Members of the Criminal

Investigations Department have launched an investigation into the shooting incident and have since confirmed that no firearm license was issued to the said individual.

Hours after the shooting at Congress Place, party leader David Granger told media operatives that the internal security of PNCR has launched an investigation into the incident.

Party Chairman Basil Williams is on record saying that the shot was fired in the air after there was a “situation” at one of the polling stations. He said someone was in “danger” of being trampled; hence, the unknown individual fired a shot into the air to disperse the crowd.

Single shot

Williams told reporters that the shooter was no way connected to the PNCR Administration.

Guyana Times understands that the man was a member of the Returning Officer Team. In responding to the outcries, the guard took out his firearm, firing a single shot into the air.

Former General Secretary Aubrey Norton moments after pulled out of the leadership race, but not before condemning the shooting incident, saying that there were other ways in addressing the issue.

Norton said he cannot recall during his tenure with the party that a gun had to be used to restore law and order.

“A gun should not have been used… not at all, you’re trying to say to me you need to shoot a gun to restore order?” questioned Norton, adding that “there should be no shooting at Congress Place”.

Former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Clarissa Riehl has also criticised Granger, contending that he is too “aloof”, while nothing that he should have been able to calm the crowd down. She said while the pandemonium was ongoing at Congress Place, Granger was having refreshments with another senior member and a security official.

The single gunshot caused the delegates attending the conference to scamper for cover.

Consultant on bail for causing death by dangerous driving

Man murdered in row over urinating on bus A T hirty-one-yearold Gavin Fifee, a bus driver was on Thursday evening stabbed to death at the East Coast Demerara Minibus Park.

Guyana Times understands that Fifee was stabbed with a homemade weapon after he was engaged in an exchange of words with another man.

The assailant, who is yet to be identified, was reportedly urinating on the minibus Fifee operates when he was asked to stop doing so by Fifee. However, the man refused to comply and an argument ensued between then. It was during the argument that Fifee was stabbed several times to his chest.

The bus driver was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by publicspirited citizens. While at the hospital, doctors battled to save his life, but he died from haemorrhage.

Stacy James, the dead man’s child mother told Guyana Times that she was at home when she got the dreadful news. James explained that she was initially told that Fifee was stabbed and was at the hospital. It was not until she arrived at the medical institution that doctors told her of his demise.

The defendant who resides at 162 Go Slow, Tuckville, Georgetown is a consultant in International Development, attached to the Commonwealth Secretariat. He has a wife and two children.

The charge which was read by the Chief Magistrate stated that on April 10, on

Camp and Quamina Streets, the defendant drove a motorcar bearing licence plate number PKK 7096 in a dangerous manner; that is to say he failed to stop at the intersection, which resulted in him hitting the deceased Lenux Alicock.

According to Police Prosecutor Michael Grant, at around 16:00h on April 10, the defendant was proceeding East along Quamina Street and it was alleged that another vehicle bearing licence plate number PNN 3718 was heading in the opposite direction, when the two vehicles collided.

As a result of the collision,

the deceased Lenux Alicock, who was a pedal cyclist, was struck down by the defendant’s vehicle. Alicock was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he later passed away.

Two other persons who were involved in the collision received injuries.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was represented by Attorney Clive Thompson who requested reasonable bail. Prosecutor Grant had no objections to bail. Cramar was granted $150,000 bail and is said to return to court on September 9.

It is alleged that on July, 30 at the Mackenzie Market Warf, the father of two had in his possession 21 grams of cannabis.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge laid against him. He was represented by Attorney Konya

Thompson who told the court that there were multiple persons at the stand and that the narcotics were found on the stall counter.

She said that when the narcotic was found, two persons who would have been standing at the stall ran away while her client stayed.

She told the court that her client was charged before for simple larceny but that matter was dismissed.

The attorney added that her client suffers from medical ailments; however, if the matter is to go forward, he will be in court she assured.

According to the Police Prosecutor Michael Grant, at around 13:30h, the Police was at Mackenzie Market

Warf when they received certain information. The Police contacted Seaford, told him of the information received and carried out a search. During the search, they found a yellow mustard bottle. Madewini man charged for larceny

n Wednesday afternoon, Paul Gittens appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after being charged for larceny.

The charge which was read by the Chief Magistrate stated that on June13 at Moblissa, Gittens, of Madewini, allegedly stole the following items: a surround sound music set valued $150,000; a Panasonic music set valued $90,000; a Sony music set valued $125,000; a Black and Decker iron worth

$10,000; a Black and Decker blender worth $15,000; a television set valued $30,000 and a Sanyo TV set valued $50,000, a total value of $470,000, all belonging to Barbara Ganesh.

Gittens told the court that he controls a sand pit at Soesdyke, Linden Highway and pleaded not guilty with explanation.

The defendant related that he returned some of the articles mentioned in the charge since Mother’s Day. Gittens further told the court that the virtual complainant

brought him before the court because she was jealous he was involved in a relationship with another woman.

Prosecutor Grant told the court that all the articles mentioned were recovered when the Police went to the defendant’s house, adding that Gittens surrendered the articles willingly.

The court granted Gittens bail in the sum of $100,000 and he is said to make his next appearance at the Linden Magistrate’s Court on August 5.

Domestic charged for larceny from dwelling house

housekeeper/domestic worker on Thursday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after she was chaged with larceny.

The charge read that on July 18, Selene Chanmondeley, 36, stole the following articles from her employer’s house: one iPad costing $60,000; two cellphones valued $170,000; a gold chain valued $100,000;

25 underpants values $17,500 and 10 boxer shorts valued $15,000 – a total of $349,000 property of Nashanti Balgobin.

The facts of the case stated that on July 18, Balgobin secured her house, leaving the aforementioned articles and went to Bartica. On July 28 when she returned, she discovered the articles missing and only one person had access to her home – the defendant, who was hired to clean the premises.

Chanmondeley was con-

tacted by the virtual complainant with the allegations, to which she denied.

Balgobin reported the matter and the Police conducted a search at the defendant’s house where some of the missing articles were recovered. She was arrested.

The unrepresented defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. There was no objection to bail by the Prosecutor, Michael Grant, therefore a sum of $100,000 bail was granted to her.

amaican hotelier, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart’s, Sandals Group will within a few days purchase a Barbados flagship tourism property, Almond Beach Village, for US$53 million.

Reporting on the matter, the Sunday Sun newspaper, hailed the pending transaction for providing a boost to Barbados’ highly stressed foreign exchange coffers.

“It will all be in the form of badly needed foreign currency,” the paper stated.

The property is currently owned by state corporation, Barbados Tourism Investment Inc (BTI), through which Government has been borrowing money from another state entity, National Insurance Service, to keep that premier real estate afloat.

The sale of Almond to Sandals was recently examined by Cabinet and approved by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart.

Meanwhile, the issue of Government owning a luxurious hotel is nothing new and the Guyana Government which has enjoyed several years of consecutive economic growth has been pushing for the realisation of the Marriott Hotel here, to boost the local tourism sector.

The Sunday newspaper quoted from a note sent to Cabinet by BTI when the purchase was being considered.

“It is also worthy of note that Barbados would have been able to convert a Barbados dominated loan facility, namely borrowings from [NIS] and Almond Resorts Inc, which was all in Barbados currency, into United States dollars at a rate of $2 to $1.?

The emphasis on the foreign exchange gain from this anticipated purchase comes against the background of an analysis by international rating agency Moody’s on the perilous threat the Barbados

dollar faces if its foreign currency reserve suffers further drops.

“Any further erosion in reserves would likely put further pressure on Barbados’ currency, which is pegged to the US dollar,” Moody’s stated in a July 21 report.

Moody’s added, “After recovering slightly during the previous three quarters, foreign exchange reserves have resumed their decline, and as of 30 June remained around 25 per cent below early-2013 levels,” Moody’s noted. “This decline occurred despite a slight recovery in long-term private financial inflows that traditionally help support the Central Bank’s international reserves.”

aribbean Airlines (CAL) is advising that a total of 230 domestic flights will be in operation to accommodate some 15,812 passengers between July 31 and August 4, utilising both the airline’s ATR72600 and B737 Jet aircraft.

According to a release, this represents an 8.4 per cent increase in the number of flights that were available during the same period in 2013.

“Caribbean Airlines advises that all flights to and from Tobago for the Great Fete Weekend is completely

travel to and from Tobago between July 31 and August 4 will be accommodated, as all flights are fully booked; passengers are reminded to check-in at least two hours prior to departure.

n this August 1, 2014, Emancipation Day, I extend heartfelt Emancipation greetings to all Guyanese but especially to Guyanese of African origin for whom this day resonates with so much significance.

The legal abolition of slavery, better known as Emancipation, is a day with special meaning for all colonized peoples but more so for persons of African descent whose ancestors were forcibly removed from their homelands and consigned to a life of servitude.

Millions of innocent persons were sold into a life of unspeakable indignities, treated as the property of others and

forced to work under arduous and demeaning conditions.

Emancipation was a historic act that brought to an end the most abominable system created by humanity. Emancipation represented a victory for all humanity.

While Emancipation did not end the oppression existing under colonialism, it rendered non-existent its most disdainful feature: the treatment of human persons as chattel. In this way it marked a distinctive break with the past. In Guyana, it led to the development of a vibrant peasantry laid the foundation for the village movement and prompted the emergence of indentureship when labour shortag-

es resulted on the sugar plantations.

Emancipation represented a defining moment in our country’s history and an important landmark in the epic struggles to end colonial rule and foreign exploitation.

On this Emancipation Day, I salute the indomitable spirit of all those who resisted the cruel and inhumane system of slavery. Their sacrifices are permanently etched in Guyana’s struggle for national liberation.

On this Emancipation Day 2014, may we also be inspired by the timeless message of Emancipation: that no system of injustice lasts forever!

Man found with cannabis during police operations

ne man was taken into Police custody following the discovery of a quantity of marijuana in his haversack at Nottinhampshire Road, Linden on Thursday.

Ex-cops donate cash to Police Force

fficials of the Guyana ExPolice Association of America Inc on Thursday handed over $241,850 to the Guyana Police Force for its Scholarship Fund (Bursary Award).

The presentation was made in the Commissioner’s Conference Room, Police Headquarters, by the Association’s President Leon Gibbons, who was accompanied by the First Vice-President Leroy Charles and Secretary Cecil Williams.

800 residents benefit from GDF Medical Corps outreaches

he Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Medical Corps continues to impact the lives of Guyanese, as it works in partnership with civil society organisations to bring health services to communities.

The latest communities to be impacted were Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, and Cane Grove, at Mahaica.

At Cotton Tree, on Wednesday, a GDF 16-member medical team, together with staffers of the Cheddi Jagan Dental

School, partnered with USregistered Non-Government Organisation (NGO) SaveAbee to provide some 400 residents with a range of medical services, including, random blood sugar testing, haemoglobin checks, blood group determination, dental checks and HIV counselling and testing, among others.

On Saturday, another 400 residents at Cane Grove, Mahaica, gained medical and dental treatment, as the GDF’s 23-member medical team partnered with the

Guyana Medical Relief Inc (GMRI) out of Lost Angeles, California.

During this outreach, 115 laboratory tests were also done. Commenting of the performance of the GDF’s team, GNMRI Chief Operations Officer Sharir Chan was high in praise.

“On a scale of one to 10, where 10 is the highest possible score, the team has earned a 10! Their performance was excellent; better than expected! All the members of the team were very

disciplined and professional in their approach and demonstrated that they cared about what they were doing.

As a result, we are considering further collaboration with the GDF in the future,” he added.

The GDF in a release said it is proud to be of service to the people of Guyana, and remains committed to partnering with organisations which seek to positively impact the lives of Guyanese citizens.

or years now the naysayers – and the ones bitten by the green-eyed monster over at the Muckraker – have been criticising the Government’s procurement policy on pharmaceuticals. We’re not going to mention back in the (PNC) day, when ALL drugs were sourced through the nationalised GPC – nat a squeak was made. Even though shortages were the order of the day...and week...and month...and years.

No squeaks also when the second-term PPP/C Government switched to the international suppliers PAHO, UNICEF and International Dispensary Association (IDA), etc. But the moment the Government considered the now privatised NEW GPC INC (Guyanese owned) and saved about 20-30 per cent on the foreign prices, there were sour faces and gnashing of teeth. Lots of gnashing of teeth.

In addition, to the aforementioned savings, so what if hundreds of Guyanese were now employed and paying taxes along with their employer?? So what if there were billions in investments in production lines and temperaturecontrolled warehouses?? So what if that we could claim the honour of being the first in the Caribbean to manufacture anti-retro viral drugs to fight AIDS at a fraction of the US costs?? Hey, it was a democracy, no?? And people had the right to lie and libel!

But the Government took the criticisms in good stead and changed the rules to encourage transparency. But “selective tendering” after a National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) was established didn’t cut any ice.

A few years later when the Government followed WHO guidelines on pharmaceutical procurement and introduced a “pre-qualification” procedure – with the pre-qualified suppliers still having to compete with the international giants PAHO, etc... the screams intensified. Just because NEW GPC was one of two companies that pre-qualified.

So last year, the Government went for even more transparency: an anonymous panel would evaluate the prequalification criteria now given specific points. And guess what??? The screams began afresh. Why?? Now don’t be silly...NEW GPC had once again beaten the field!! But this time, it looks like the Government’s had it with this nonsense.

Two companies, IPA and Trini ANSA McCAL claimed they had the required warehouse space. Trouble was, one’s bottling water in their space while the other’s storing beer (Carib, Stag)! So what if pharmaceutical storage need precise temperature controls?? Hey!! It’s only Guyanese lives!

And now we find that the “giant” ANSA didn’t even fill out the paperwork for manufacturer’s authorisation to distribute drugs!! They bluffed – saying they’re distributors for some five named drugs.

As if we all didn’t know the bidding’s for hundreds of drugs!! Guyanese lives?? That’s cheap.

...against women

OK. We know this Vanessa Kissoon from Linden ain’t easy. But growing up in any mining community, like the old sugar estates, ensures the rough edges remain firmly in place. So after David Granger wanted to show Khemraj Ramjattan that he, Granger, “is maan”, but to do so had to depend on women like Kissoon to rile up a riot on Linden, you can’t blame the woman to be pi55ed off when Granger up and moved her from her seat in Parliament and banished her to the back benches.

Then to have Granger’s lackey General Secretary wrench the keys to the PNC Linden office from her, just to hand it over to a “loyalist”, had to have further raised her blood pressure. The final straw, we guess, was the Congress where she and her delegation had to dive for cover from a gunshot fired by one of Granger’s old Army squaddies.

It’s very undignified for a young female to become so dishevelled. So she’s giving it to Granger good! Ouch!!

ome 180 years after slavery was abolished, the joy of Africans being free men has been much celebrated and today, the momentous occasion is marked with various activities, not only of their freedom but also of the African culture.

However, the freedom has not been without challenges, as some legacies of slavery still remain, and according to scholars, notably among the lot is Type Two Diabetes. A 2006 Caribbean Health Research Council and the Pan American Health Organisation reported that Type Two Diabetes affects over 95 per cent of persons with diabetes in the Caribbean.

Type Two Diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or when the pancreas stops producing enough insulin. The reason why this happens is unknown, although genetics and environmental factors seem to be contributing factors. But the Caribbean Reparationss Committee (CRC) is calling on former colonial powers to provide resources to address public-health crises such as hypertension and Type Two Diabetes, which it claims, are directly related to legacies of racial slavery and apartheid.

CRC Chairman, Sir Hillary Beckles said the people in the Caribbean suffer from high rates of Type Two Diabetes and high blood pressure, which he called two terrible legacies of slavery.

Poor nutrition

Speaking at a Reparationss Conference at Chicago State University in April, Sir Beckles explained that the Caribbean people have some of the highest rates of Type Two Diabetes, which he credited to a history of poor nutrition, which was common among those enslaved.

Professor Beckles said the drugs pharmaceutical com-

panies use to treat Type Two Diabetes are only tested on whites; they are therefore largely ineffective in treating blacks who live in the Caribbean and the US because of their genetic makeup, The NorthStar News and Analysis reported him as saying.

He said Caribbean countries are in the process of developing drugs that would effectively treat people with Type Two Diabetes in the Caribbean and African Americans in the US. Local Reparations Committee Chairman, Dr Eric Phillips also contended, “We all know that it has been said over and over again that many persons in Guyana suffer from hypertension and Type Two Diabetes. But what many people do not realise is that these diseases stemmed from the diets which were afforded to the enslaved people back in those days. The food they were given to eat caused these diseases to develop and it’s genetic so it has passed on from one generation to the other.”

In Guyana, diabetes is rated as a major cause of death, as it changes place with cancer from year to year and accounts for an average of about 430 deaths each year, or about six deaths for every 10,000 persons.

The 2006 Caribbean Health Research Council and the Pan American Health Organisation report stated that diabetes more often affects people of lower socio-economic status who carry a greater disease burden for many reasons including limited access to or utilisation of health care, poor nutrition, and sub-optimal physical activity.

“The disease also places a heavy economic burden on already limited health care resources in the Caribbean.

Costs are related directly to treatment of the disease and its complications, and indirectly to loss of earning power in those affected,” the reported stated.

Professor Beckles in a recent address to the House of Commons, said his homeland Barbados, Britain’s first slave society, which he said is now called the “amputation capitol of the world”, the stress profile of slavery and racial apartheid; dietary disaster and psychological trauma; and the addiction to the consumption of sugar and salt, have reached the highest peak. The country is now host to the world’s most virulent diabetes and hypertension epidemic”.

A debt

The British Parliament, he said owes the people of Barbados an education and health initiative for the travails brought upon them.

British slave ships brought 5.5 million enslaved Africans into their Caribbean colonies over 180 years. When slavery was abolished in 1838, they were just 800,000 persons remaining. That is, a retention/ survival rate of 15 per cent.

The regime of enslavement was crafted by policies and attitudes that were clearly genocidal, Professor Beckles said.

And while the Caribbean battles to overcome Type Two Diabetes, reportedly a legacy of slavery, Professor Beckles said the quest for reparationss is not an appeal for a hand out.

“Our citizens have faced this past head on, and have established a vibrant culture of community self-help and sustainable regional development mobilisation. We are not beggars! We are not subservient! We do not want charity and handouts! We want justice! Reparatory justice!

Under Burnham’s Govt: Army transferred weapons to National Development Ministry

he Walter Rodney Commission on Wednesday heard that more than 200 pieces of weapons were transferred to the National Development Ministry as well as some individuals.

The report showed that on May 18 and 19, 1976, the Army had supplied several magazine spares, cleaning rods, and ball ammunition to a comrade, R Corbin.

The Commission learnt that the GDF was in the business of transferring arms and ammunition to an agency of the then People’s National Congress Government.

On Wednesday, head of the Army’s Intelligence Unit, Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Charles James presented evidence to the Commission, indicating that the Army, from as far back as 1976, had been supplying weapons to the National Development Ministry.

Asked whether the receiver of the items was former PNCR leader Robert Corbin, the Lieutenant Colonel said he could not say. However, reports are that the former party leader was at the time the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary.

Other records show that on several occasions, arms and ammunition were also transferred to one Comrade Skeete, also from the National Development Ministry.

Skeete, it has been reported was Corbin’s driver. Based on the evidence presented, arms and ammunition were

issued to several other organisations, including OMAI, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), GUYMINE and the Guyana National Service.

The record speaks of the period between 1976 and 1997.

In his sworn statement to the Commission, Lieutenant Colonel James said that in 2008, he was directed by then Chief-of-Staff Gary Bess, to conduct an internal investigation to determine whether weapons on charge to the GDF were issued to external organisations.

According to him, the instruction was based on the number of weapons that were recovered in the Mahaicony Creek after a shootout between members of the Force and criminal elements.

It was during that investigation that he uncovered documents held by the Service and Support Battalion concerning the Force’s weapon inventory and issues to the external organistions.

In his statement, James noted that the Guyana Defence Force has always had a number of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) for both the procurement of special equipment, including arms and ammunition, accountability and distribution to units and sub-units of the Guyana Defence Force and other external organisations.

Since the commencement of the Commission of Inquiry, the Army has had its name called on several occasions, with information that it had

supplied the controversial House of Israel with arms and ammunition.

Former leader within the House of Israel, Joseph Hamilton, had testified that the religious organisation, which had cre-

ated a name for itself during the early 1970s under the leadership of Rabbi “David Hill” Washington, was used by the PNC Government at the time as a “tool of repression” against opponents of the Government and was indeed

supplied with weapons from the Army.

He had informed too that the former leader of the PNCR, Robert Corbin had once handed out guns to the religious group.

Assets of defunct Co-ops to be liquidated

overnment has taken the decision to liquidate assets of defunct Cooperatives and Friendly Societies, stating that persons have been engaging in the illegal disposals of assets.

This was announced by Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon at his post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday.

According to Dr Luncheon, most of the assets of the societies are lands, which are unlawful dispose off.

“Acquisition and ownership oftentimes can lead to enormous trials and tribulations for those who are so involved. And in the case of the defunct Cooperatives and Friendly Societies, a pattern evolved or seemed to be evolving, where individuals purporting to exercise some authority on behalf of these defunct societies and particularly in their membership, were engaged in the disposal of these immovable assets,” he stated.

Court cases He said that some of these cases have even reached the court, referring to the Lamaha Gardens issue and some others from West Coast Demerara.

“I think our emphasis is on the Act (Cooperative Societies), the infringement of the Act and more than the Act and its infringement has been what taking place is; the tendency is galloping. There is irrefutable evidence that this specter of unauthorised illegal behaviour is actually accelerating,” the Cabinet Secretary stated.

The Cabinet Secretary pointed out that there are concerns about the way in which State agencies have become party to the disposal of the assets of these defunct societies, adding that this is where Cabinet’s attention has been further diverted to. He continued that after Cabinet was informed of this illegal practice adopted to dispose of

the assets, it has put in place a process to wind up the defunct Cooperatives and Friendly Societies. He pointed out that there is no lack of statutory requirements process as it relates to the winding-up process, since it is detailed in the Act. “Cabinet took an exceedingly dim view of those practices and has, in essence, endorse the recommendations of its Labour sub-committee and these recommendations call for aggressive enforcement of those applicable provisions in the Act with regards to the winding up of defunct co-ops/friendly societies,” he explained.

Aggressive approach Dr Luncheon noted that Cabinet recognised that this aggressive approach would need to be supported by forensic audits and consultancies to effectively deal with defunct Cooperatives and Friendly Societies while advising them on how to comply with the law. Cabinet had approved the implementation of these measures.

In March this year, some 220 co-ops were listed as being defunct by the Labour, Human Service and Social Security Ministry after they failed to comply with the Cooperative Societies Act. According to the Chief Cooperative Development

Officer Carol Valz, these co-ops have failed to comply with Sections 38 and 39 of the Cooperative Societies Act, Chapter 88:01 and Section 23(1) of the AntiMoney Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act. A month earlier, Labour Minister, Dr Nanda Gopaul had told Guyana Times that the verification process, which began in September 2013, revealed that many co-ops are in violation of the Cooperative Society Act. He noted that accountability, illegal sale of land, and financial discrepancies were the major problems identified. The Minister had stated that while the Ministry’s Cooperative Department was working to resuscitate some defunct co-ops, they had no choice but to shut down some societies.

“Some societies have shown the willingness to work and so, we will be working along with them.

Currently, they are being audited but those who cannot find records, or officials, or proper accountability, these will be dissolved and we are talking in excess of 200 co-ops,” he had explained.

There are currently in excess of 1800 cooperative societies, and the entire cooperative movement owns in excess of $15 billion in assets.

Having experienced this culture first hand, it’s no wonder why Collins enjoys the water so much and even less surprising that she would love Reggae and Dancehall music with a special admiration for legend Bob Marley. Asked where she sees herself in another five years, Collins affirmed that she wishes to work with the United Nations dealing with human trafficking or abused women and children. Miss Collins says she is proud of her country’s diversity and plans to promote this factor in the Miss Jamzone International Pageant.

She said while she anxiously anticipates meeting new people and making fresh memories during her journey in the Miss Jamzone International Pageant, she is even more excited about fulfilling her lifelong dream of excelling in pageantry.

Morton says while she enjoys her career as a Commercial Officer, her top priority is becoming a mother as having a family, since this is extremely important to her. She hopes to own her own home, obtain a Masters Degree and become a Financial Analyst.

Asked about what makes her proud of her country, Morton said St Kitts is an extremely beautiful island that nature has blessed with very unique features.

She made mention of her country being among the few islands that have remnants of historical forts.

However, she admitted that locals need extensive training in customer service and etiquette and for the purpose on enhancing the tourism sector; she would love for more local art to be marketed and more local performers to be promoted.

The event will see a clash of the champions in very competitive gear. Hawksbills no match for Gayle force A

Nikita Miller ran through the Hawksbills lower order, picking off three wickets. The most impressive of those was when Chris Gayle caught Shacaya Thomas at leg slip as the batsman attempted the sweep shot.

When they returned, the game was reduced to 17 overs per side and off the seven remaining deliveries the Antiguan side managed 11 more runs to reach 89 for nine. There was a wicket off the last ball as Carlos Brathwaite returned for a risky second run. He was short of his ground as wicket keeper Chadwick Walton removed the bails.

T&T in a spin as Guyana eye victory

uyana bowled out Trinidad and Tobago for 117 for a 193-run lead on the first innings, and has enforced the follow-on at the end of the penultimate day of the third and finalround game against Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-19, three-day tournament.

The Guyanese bowlers maintained consistency throughout, especially the spinners, who have shared seven wickets between them.

Daimon Waldron (29), Steven Sankar (2-25), Sharaz Ramcharran (239) and Balchan Baldeo (1-7) all produced inspirational spells.

Pacers Kemo Paul and Keon Morris were also impressive, claiming one wicket apiece.

Earlier, Tagnarine Chanderpaul hit a fabulous, unbeaten 100 and helped Guyana extend their first innings total to 310-9 before the declaration came at the end of

the first session.

Resuming at overnight 228-5, the host lost two important wickets in the first 15 minutes of play. Overnight batsman Kemo Paul was the first to go, adding just one run before offering a diving catch to Justin Joseph at backward point off Anderson Phillip for 14.

Three runs later, off-spinner Samuel Roopnarine (360) removed Kemol Sevory to leave the total at 232-7.

However, Chanderpaul, who resumed on 79 and searching for his second century at this level, held up the tourists’ advance in partnership with Daimon Waldron.

The pair added 48 invaluable runs during which young Chanderpaul , who batted the entire first day continued to frustrate the visitors, showing the perfect temperament to grind it out on the slow pitch.

He accumulated runs patiently, relying mostly on singles and twos, before reaching the landmark, when he on-drove Jesse Bootan for his

11th boundary that spanned 433 minutes and 339 balls.

Immediately after, Waldron (13) and Steven Sankar (0) were dismissed but Chanderpaul was fortunate on 126, when he was dropped

by Brandon Jaggernauth off Joseph.

Apart from this blemish, a dogged Chanderpaul batted with typical aplomb, mixing sound defence with aggression, and by the interval, Guyana were placed at 3109. Chanderpaul was on 132, an innings which lasted for 482 minutes, 374 balls and was decorated with 12 fours and a six and Keon Morris on five when the innings was declared closed. Seetal (2-44), Joseph (2-73) and Phillip (150) were the other successful bowlers for T&T. Trinidad and Tobago were then reduced to 25-2. They were undone by key strikes from fast bowler Keon Morris, who claimed the wicket of Amir Jangoo for eight to a catch by wicketkeeper Kemol Sevory, and off-spinner

Balchand Baldeo, who prised out Brian Christmas for six, trapped leg-before offering no shot.

After the visitors had started to rebuild, Sattaur’s decision to bring on Sharaz Ramcharran proved successful when he dismissed the well-set Jeremy Solozano for 23.

Things got even worst for the Trinidadians after a mix-up between Brandon Jaggernauth and Camillo Carimbocas eventually saw Carimbocas’s run out for 12 and by the tea interval, T&T were 51-4.

Brandon Jaggernauth and Jemeel Maniram staged a mini recovery with a 31-run partnership for the fifth wicket before there was joy for the Guyanese with the wicket of Maniram for 23.

The tourists were always in trouble against the Guyanese attack and the lower order could not stand up to the challenge as the last five wickets fell for just 32 runs.

partans Captain Marzana Fiedtkou continued her fine form with another hattrick for her team in their 7-6 victory in the junior division over the Pitbulls as the annual Noble House Goals Galore Indoor Hockey Championships continued on Wednesday evening at the National Gymnasium.

With the Spartans giving up a five-goal handicap at the start to the Pitbulls, Fiedtkou’s goal-laden performance, along with a double from Aliyah Gordon and an Alysa Xavier penalty corner goal, sealed the match, maintaining their status as one of the favourites for the gold.

Junior division pool leaders, Revelation and Old Fort Shooting Stars, battled to an exciting draw 1515. Beginning with a seven-goal deficit, it was a race against the clock for Revelation as they wasted no time in getting onto the scoreboard in just the second minute through Tekiesha Delian. Revelation would make up the deficit just before the half. After having scored seven unanswered goals in the first half, the game seemed all but sewn up for Revelation, but the Shooting Stars seemed to have been revitalised by their half- time team huddle. The Stars defended relentlessly in the second half to keep Revelation scoreless and surprised their senior counterparts in hanging on for the draw at full time.

The Under-19 Mix managed their second victory of the competition, this time over the Hikers Ladies with an 8-5 victory. With the Under-19 enjoying a fourgoal handicap at the outset, the Hikers two goals from Charlyn Elliot and Nicole Eastman would hardly be enough, while Robert Brumell scored for the sec-

In the senior division, the Pepsi Hikers continued to steamroll all opposition as they came from behind to give Blue Steel their first loss of the competition.

With the favourites, Hikers beginning at zero and Blue Steel (+7), the Hikers would have evened the score by halftime were it not for a penalty stroke conversion for the Blue Steel by veteran Phillip Fernandes. The Hikers showed their class and superior fitness as they continued their high tempo throughout the second half, emerging with the 12-8 victory and their undefeated record intact.

Kingston Hockey, featuring several players who had taken a hiatus from the game, continued to impress those in attendance with their level of play.

Beginning with a +10 handicap to the Gladiators +8, Kingston managed to maintain their margin matching the Gladiators goal for goal as the match progressed. Onassis Fraser was once again the standout for Kingston with a double strike to match that of the Gladiators Mark Fraser.

With Kingston scoring three unanswered goals in the opening half, the Gladiators would have to dig into their reserves to produce a stronger second half to return to within striking distance, but Kingston managed to hold them off with a 14-12 victory.

The final senior division match saw a depleted Old Fort Viking succumb to an exuberant Saints by 12-9. Despite a hat-trick from Viking John Abrams, his side could not match the young legs of the Saints army who marched to their first victory in the competition.

The senior pool at the end of the evening finds the Pepsi Hikers sitting on top with seven points,followed

by Kingston hockey and Blue Steel on six points. GCC have four points and Saints follow on three. The junior division finds the surprising duo of Old Fort Shooting Stars and Revelation sharing the top spot with seven points each. The Spartans and under-19 follow on six points each.

The tournament continues until Sunday, when the category finals will take place from 18:00h.

he Harpy Eagle Martial Arts Academy along with members of the Felix Austin Police College (FAPC), secured third place overall in the best of the best second annual martial arts championships. In second place was Best of the Best Martial Arts Club and in first place Black Hawks Martial Arts Club. The event was held on July 27, 2014, at the National Gymnasium.

The team successfully managed to secure

Moeen six-for ends England’s win drought E ngland ended a winless run of 10 Tests, which began in August last year, in style on the fifth morning in Southampton, completing a performance so clinical that they did not allow India even a dominant hour in four days and one session. he executives, members and staff of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) have extended congratulations to the Guyana team for capturing the 2014 edition of the West Indies Crcicket Board (WICB) Regional U-15 title.

Guyana had to win their final-round match against Jamaica to win the tournament as they went into it with only a slim lead ahead of Trinidad and Tobago, and they held their nerves in a keenly contested match to bring the title home.

“We were confident from the inception that this team would excel as it comprises extremely talented and disciplined young boys. They have shown the true signs of their willpower, perseverance and determination,” a GCB release said.

“Out of five games this young, talented bunch lost one match and outshone four other teams with resounding victories to finish on 25 points, while runner-up Barbados finished on 19.5.”

Apart from marking its name on the title, Guyana

was awarded the most disciplined team, and Kevin Sinclair received the best bowler prize for claiming 11 wickets. Coach Julian Moore and Manager Andy Ramnarine also received special prizes for being on the winning team.

“We are now looking forward to our U-19 boys to get past Trinidad and Tobago and take the three-day title,” said the GCB. Before the start of the final round, Guyana stood at the top of the points table, followed by Leeward Islands.

lympic 800m champion and world record holder David Rudisha was dethroned by his young rival Nijel Amos as the 20-year-old took the Commonwealth title in style.

Amos, who won silver in London in the greatest 800m race in history, kicked hard down the home straight to overtake Rudisha and cross the line with his arms outstretched in celebration.

Rudisha as always went to the front at 150m and tried to control the race from there, just as he had in setting that phenomenal record in 2012.

But, after a 2013 wrecked by a knee injury and a summer where he has been chasing fitness as well as his rivals, he could not take it out fast enough. He was power-

less as Botswana’s Amos accelerated past him with 50m to go to take gold in one minute 45.18 seconds.

Rudisha’s 1:45.48 won him silver with Amos’s South African training partner Andre Olivier taking bronze, Scotland’s Guy Learmonth running a brilliant personal best of 1:46.69 for sixth and England’s Michael Rimmer, after an injury-ravaged season, two hundredths of a second further back in seventh. The 25-year-old Rudisha had gone through 400m in 52.7 seconds, more than three seconds down on his split from the Olympic final.

And it was that comparative lack of gas that allowed Amos, his country’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony, to come through the

traffic down the finishing straight to repeat his victory at the Monaco Diamond League. Amos told BBC Sport: “I am so happy but David Rudisha will always be the hero of 800m.”

It had been billed as one of the races of the Commonwealths, one of the few in which the best in the world has been challenged by a talent only fractionally behind.

Rudisha was given a reception befitting a great champion by a capacity Hampden crowd, and in defeat he showed characteristic grace despite the disappointment. “The race was good, but in the last 100m I found it a little bit difficult.

He is a tough competitor.

We ran a tactical race, but he was good tonight.”

ambassadors of their community and allow discipline to prevail in every situation. He also encouraged the youths to seize every opportunity in whichever discipline they choose which will take them to greater heights.

He also assured the management of the BHSC that Zeco Engineering will be most willing to continue its support once the youths of the community are engaged in sport through proactive means.

In expressing his gratitude on behalf of the BHSC, Mustafaa Azimullah, thanked the management of Zeco Engineering for the thoughtfulness in its contribution, one which will allow its members the opportunity to compete distinctly and with pride.

ngland pace bowler James Anderson faces a hearing on Friday over his alleged clash with India’s Ravindra Jadeja during the first Test.

Jadeja will also appeal against his fine for his part in the incident at the same hearing.

The International Cricket Council handed Anderson, 32, a level three misconduct charge over claims he abused and pushed Jadeja at Trent Bridge.

Anderson faces a maximum four-Test ban if he is found guilty.

The Lancashire player, who took seven wickets in England’s 266-run victory in the third Test at Southampton, denies India’s claims over the altercation that is said to have taken place as the teams left the field for lunch on day two at Nottingham.

Jadeja, 25, was fined 50% of his match fee when his case was heard before the

start of the third Test, with match referee David Boon downgrading the offence to a level one infringement.

Anderson and Jadeja’s hearings will be overseen via video conference by judicial commissioner Gordon Lewis, who is based in Australia.

The fourth Test, to be held at Anderson’s home ground of Old Trafford, begins on Thursday, 7 August.

anchester United’s world record £750m kit deal with Adidas will be cut by 30% if they fail to qualify for the Champions League in consecutive seasons from 2015-16. The German sportswear giant could also cancel the contract if the club get relegated from the Premier League.

United failed to qualify for any of the European competitions this season after finishing seventh in 2013-14. They will want a big improvement under new manager Louis van Gaal, 62.

Van Gaal was appointed Red Devils boss as successor to David Moyes earlier this summer.

Details of the deal with Adidas, which was announced earlier this month, emerged after United offered more of their shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

million shares, around 5% of the business, after selling 10% in 2012.

About $150m (£88.7m) will be raised with money going to the Glazer family, the club’s US owners. United have also been warned that interest rates on part of their £351.7m debt may rise.

A prospectus reveals

that the deal with Adidas features a number of conditions. Failure to qualify for the Champions League in consecutive seasons from 2015-16, when the contract begins, would see payments cut by nearly one third.

However, United could benefit from an extra £4m per year if they win the Premier League, Champions League or FA Cup. Should the club be relegated from the Premier League, the manufacturer can give 12 months’ notice to terminate the contract and reduce payments in half for every season spent outside the top flight.

The shares offering comes two months after the death of owner Malcolm Glazer. His six children control the club and will retain more than an 80% stake. In 2005, the Glazer family paid £790m for United, borrowing £500m and paying the remainder in cash. (BBC Sport)

orld number two Li Na of China will miss the US Open with a knee injury.

The 32-year-old, who won the Australian Open earlier this year for her second Grand Slam title, has targeted a return to action in late September.

“Since March, I have

been struggling with my knee and it is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level,” Li said on Facebook.

The US Open starts on 25 August in New York and Li will miss the WTA events in Montreal and Cincinnati as well. “My medical team has advised

me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee so it heals,” added Li, whose first Grand Slam title came at the 2011 French Open.

Li was eliminated from this year’s French Open in the first round before bowing out of Wimbledon in round three.

Hope Memorial football kicks off with drawn game

ew Amsterdam United (NAU) and Hope Football Club (HFC) shared the honours when the second annual Hope Football U-20 Tournament kicked off Wednesday at the Burnham Park in New Amsterdam.

The two teams played to an exciting 1-1 draw to set the stage for a keenly contested tournament.

NAU, the more seasoned team, seemed to have the advantage moments after the game started and goal-keeper Leon Loo was brought into action early in the game.

However, it was not until the 39th minute that the goal came. Joshua Butts received the ball and took it close to the corner flag before sending it into the sixyard box, where his brother Jamal used his head to send it across the goal where Shamar Dea sent it back to the goal and D. Williams steered it passed the outstretched hands of Loo. In the 46th minute,

Jamal Butts was pulled down in the penalty area.

He took the penalty awarded, but Loo made a brilliant save and although he did not hold on to the ball, Butts could not get it between the uprights. Butts was substituted in the 58th minute after another penalty was sent straight to the hands of Loo. In the 79th minute, Shamar Kendal found the equaliser. However, one minute later HFC was again on the attack when Steffon Hinds got into the six-yard box. His shot was powerfully sent past goal-keeper Gerald Ford but hit the cross bar to bring an end to the 80-minute game.

Meanwhile, Number 5 Football Club gained a walkover from Paradise who failed to show for their game at the Number 5 Ground.

The competition continues next Wednesday when Cougars will take on HFC at the Burnham Park.

August packed with race walking events – organised by Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club

he cream of the country’s race walkers and a number of newcomers along with overseas participants will be kept busy for the next few weeks, following races planned by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club to mark the 11th Race Walk Month of activities being held under the theme, “Preparing Race Walkers to participate in 2016 Olympics in Brazil”.

The races will commence on August 3 with the Forbes Burnham Memorial Race Walk starting 06:30h at the Burnham Bust, Public and Vlissengen Roads, Kitty which will proceed along Vlissengen Road and end at the Place of the Seven Ponds at the Botanical Gardens, Regent Street.

The race walkers will then move to Linden on August 9 for two races. The first race will commence at

06:30h at the Four Corners, Wismar and proceed to the Five Corners, Mackenzie for the finish.

The following day, August 10, the race will start at the Linden Bridge (Wismar end) at 06:30h and proceed along the Winifred Gaskin Highway and end at Hinds Service Station, Wisroc. Both races are being staged in association with the Half Mile/Wismar Community Group.

The races will continue on August 16 with a Junior’s 10K race walk around Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara starting at 6:30h at the Calvin Gilkes residence, Back Road, proceeding around the community and end at the place of origin.

Several other races are planned for the month.

On August 17, the New Amsterdam race walk will be staged. The first race

will begin at 06:30h at Philadelphia Street and proceed around the town to end at Pitt Street.

Later in the day, at 14:00h, the second race will be run off at Gangaram, Canje and ending at Pitt Street. Both races are being coordinated by sports organizer Ali Hazel.

The activities continue on August 24 with a 10K race walk around Durban Park Homestretch Avenue at 06:30h, starting and ending at the 1763 Monument (Cuffy) on Vlissengen Road.

The grand finale will be a 10K race walk around the National Park, Thomas Land on August 31, starting at 06:30h.

During the month, the CSTC will also host a race walk workshop and exhibition, and also an awards ceremony and a one week junior’s race walk camp.

Hawksbills no match for Gayle force T

Chris Gayle finished on 59 not out to become the leading run scorer in the history of the CPL

he Antigua Hawksbills winless streak in the Limacol Caribbean Premier League extended to six matches as they lost to the Jamaica Tallawahs. Once again the Hawksbills top order failed to set a defendable total as wickets from Jerome Taylor and Nikita Miller restricted them to just 89 runs in a rain affected match that was reduced to 17 overs.

The run chase was a simple affair as Chris Gayle finished on 59 not out to become the leading run scorer in the history of the CPL. Throughout this year’s tournament the Hawksbills have been hampered by the loss of early wickets. Their highest opening stand this season is just 40 and they did not come close to beating

that mark as Devon Thomas was bowled for three runs.

It could have been an even shorter partnership had David Bernard not dropped a simple chance in the deep; Ben Dunk was the man he failed to dismiss. Dunk has had three different men with him at the top of the order none have managed to make the spot his own.

Marlon Samuels departed in the last over of the Powerplay caught trying to hit Jerome Taylor over mid on only to chip the ball into the ever reliable hands of Andre Russell. With Samuels gone the Hawksbills promoted Rahkeem Cornwall up the order to add some impetus.

Cornwall is capable of hitting a long ball but as a man with a Twenty20 batting av-

erage of less than 10 it was always a big ask for him to rescue the innings. When he fell LBW for just a single it was clear that the experiment had failed.

That left Dunk with everything to do to try and get this innings started. He has arrived with a stellar reputation but has failed to get going in this year’s CPL. He is yet to pass 50 for the Hawksbills and his runs are coming at only just above a run a ball. When he mistimed a drive that was brilliantly caught by Taylor in his follow through there was a familiar feel to this Antiguan effort.

Things went even further downhill when the hugely experienced David Hussey was run out as the innings became a procession.
