Colwyn Harding charged Labourer charged Prison officer remanded for allegedly narcotics possession for larceny for robbery

olwyn Harding, the 23-yearold who accused Police ranks of sodomising him with a condom-covered baton and physically assaulting him last November while he was under arrest for robbery, has again found himself in legal trouble.

On Thursday, he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry charged with robbery.

The allegation against him states that on July 9, at Georgetown, he robbed ex-girlfriend Sherry-Ann Hope of a quantity of cash and three cellphones, valued a total of $390,000.

Representing the accused was Attorney Nigel Hughes who submitted that his client was not at the scene at the time the alleged robbery took place. Hughes divulged that the Police are in possession of three alibis that can substantiate the claim.

The Attorney added that Harding maintains his innocence and is eager to vindicate his name. He made an application for bail. That application was unsuccessfully challenged by Police Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru, who told the court that there is a possibility that Harding may try to tamper with the victim. Mangru also said that Harding was a flight risk,

as he has previously tried to run away upon seeing Police ranks and if bail was granted, he may not return to court. However, Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry granted the defendant bail in the sum of $75,000.

The matter will be called again on August 4 for the submission of statements.

Meanwhile, the two Police Constables, Devin Singh and Roslyn Tilbury-Douglas, accused of assaulting Harding late last year were placed on bail on June 2 after denying the charges.

seventeen-year-old labourer appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Thursday after he was slapped with a charge of larceny.

The charge alleged that Jason Brotherson, of Lot 66 Gordon Street, Kitty, Georgetown, on June 12 stole one Samsung S4 Galaxy cellphone valued $160,000, the property of Eileen Singh.

According to the facts as read in court by the Prosecutor, on the day in question, the defendant asked the complainant for some water and as she returned with the glass of water, she saw the accused making good his escape with the cellphone in his hand.

The Prosecutor further told the court that he admitted to the offence under caution statement. However, Brotherson’s attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat told the court that his client never made any statements acknowledging his guilt and that the complainant’s husband works in the interior as a gold miner and that his client and the complainant share a relationship. He said that the phone was given to Brotherson by the complainant, however her husband found out about the relationship and forced her to press charges.

Bail was granted in a sum of $100,000 and he will return to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on August 4 for the submission of statements.

wenty-two-yearold Akeem Vivhouse appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry on Thursday after he was charged with possession of narcotics.

Vivhouse, a prison officer attached to the Camp Street prison is alleged to have had in his possession 279 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

He was represented by Attorney Pamela De Santos who told the court that the illegal substance was not found on her client but was found in his room in the

She said that upon entering the room, Vivhouse noticed the bag and as he proceeded to check it, another rank came in and noticed.

However Prosecutor Bharrat Mangru stated that on the day in question, the defendant went to the main entrance of the Camp Street Prison and was unknowingly followed by a cadet officer, who saw the accused take the parcel and throw it on the ground.

Bail was refused and the case is adjourned until Monday, July 22.

GRRC launches Guyana Book Festival

he Georgetown Reading and Research Centre (GRRC) today launched the 2014 Guyana Book Festival at its permanent 38,000 square-foot location, Bookland, on Woolford Avenue and Albert Streets.

According to GRRC Founder and Director Rupert Hopkinson, there has never been a sale of this magnitude in the organisation’s 17year history. The garden-like facility, filled with books and lush plants with tents here and there, lends itself to a delightful experience browsing the hundreds of thousands of books available and additional social activities.

Hopkinson stated that Bookland will have special offers. He said every buyer would be entitled to a free book, with at least three to 20 free books for those who purchase more than $1000 worth of books. Hopkinson explained that he was motivated to give away the relatively large amount of free books to give buyers an opportunity to donate to their favourite li-

braries, organisations or individuals. He also pointed out that, as an alternative, buyers can obtain credits from their purchase and select choice books.

The GRRC Director said more than 100,000 books will be sold at the Book Festival and all books will be 20-60 per cent off the regular price.

The Centre has budgeted to give away about 10,000 books during the event to help promote literacy in Guyana. Many books will be sold for $100- $300, and the recent arrival of a unique selection of about 8000 books will add variety to the book sale.

GRRC was estabilished to provide a cheaper alternative to purchasing textbooks. Hopkins explained that while the focus remains, the organisation has moved into other directions that can support its current and future ventures to achieve its mission of “getting books in every household”. The Guyana Book Festival ends on Sunday, September 3.

GuySuCo debts pegged at $42B

he Guyana Sugar C o r p o r a t i o n (GuySuCo) has debts of more than $42 billion, with billions owed to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

On Thursday, Finance Director Paul Bhim disclosed that GuySuCo’s longterm debt stood at US$112 million or G$23.072 billion, while the short-term debt totals G$19.4 billion. At the time, he was responding to questions posed by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member Desmond Trotman, when GuySuCo appeared before the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Economic Services. Bhim explained that of the US$112 million, the World Bank loaned GuySuCo US$56 million, while US$32 million was borrowed from the Exim Bank of China and US$24 million from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

According to him, the loans were taken to primarily finance the Skeldon Sugar Factory.

But it was Bhim’s breakdown of GuySuCo’s shortterm debt that raised eyebrows in the Economic Services Committee, placing the sugar company under further scrutiny. Of the $19.4 billion, the Financial Director said GuySuCo owes GRA $2.7 billion for PAYE and $729 million is outstanding for NIS. According to him, the Corporation has not paid NIS for the last four months, a situation which was described by members of the Committee as “worrying”.

to seven commercial banks in Guyana. Corporation and property taxes owed amount to approximately $3 billion while $1.4 billion is outstanding for the Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund. To add to its high level of indebtedness, GuySuCo recently took a one-year loan from the National Commercial Bank of Jamaica totalling G$3 billion or US$15 million.

According to the Finance Director, the loan was taken to finance the operations of the sugar corporation.

Worrying elements

In response, the Economic Services Committee Chairman, APNU parliamentarian Carl Greenidge said GuySuCo’s overdrafts are not alarming because of the economic make-up of the Corporation but the level of indebtedness to GRA and NIS was.

“In those figures, there are some very worrying elements,” he said, positing that “NIS is already a political problem”. He explained that the insurance

scheme’s viability affects all sectors of the economy.

“On one hand, transfers are being made to you from the treasury and on the other hand, in addition to paying your bill, you are now accumulating indebtedness to the state system, these are serious shortfalls.”

The APNU Shadow Finance Minister wasted no time in grilling Bhim on mechanisms in place to clear the billions owed primarily to GRA, NIS and the Sugar Industry Welfare Fund in the short and medium term.

“We actually started to repay the NIS, we have actually repaid a third of that amount and we have plans to actually catch up with the backlog in another three to four months,” Bhim explained in his response. He said once GuySuCo starts to ship sugar out to Europe following the second crop, NIS will be paid in full.

More problematic

But, GuySuCo would not be able to clear the $2.7 billion owed to GRA in such a short period of time. “It is

a more problematic one, in terms of repaying, in terms of getting up to date, in terms of PAYE [Pay As You Earn]. I can’t see us getting up to date for this year…

With the currency we are getting out of Europe… there has been a tumbling of the world market price and it is reflecting on the price we get out of Europe for sugar…so with those decline in prices, I cannot see us getting current on the PAYE part,” Bhim explained.

Last Friday, when GuySuCo appeared before the Economic Services Committee, Chief Executive Officer Dr Rajendra Singh disclosed that the cost of production stood at US$0.34 per pound. Since, 1995, GuySuCo has been producing sugar at a loss, creating a series of problems, including the inability to pay workers their wages and salaries. From 19951996, the cost of production was US$0.23 per pound with the figure dropping to US$0.22 by 1997. When compared with production costs in Guatemala, United States, North East Brazil and India, the cost of producing sugar in Guyana is most unfavourable.

Recognising that the high cost of production remains a sore point in the local industry, Dr Singh assured the Committee that mechanisms are in place in 2013-2017 Strategic Plan to reduce the cost of production to US$0.26 per pound, in its quest to reduce its financial burden. MDGs update A

new report launched last week by UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon points to the fact that millions of people’s lives have improved due to concerted global, regional, national and local efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which serve as the foundation for the next global development agenda.

The MDGs report is based on comprehensive official statistics andprovides the most up-to-date summary of all Goals and their targets at global and regional levels, with additional national statistics available online. Results show that concentrated efforts to achieve MDG targets by national governments, the international community, civil society and the private sector are working to lift people out of extreme poverty and improve their futures.

Increasing access to improved drinking-water sources, improving the lives of slum dwellers and achieving gender parity in primary school, many more targets are within reach by their 2015 target date. The world will likely surpass MDG targets on malaria, tuberculosis and access to HIV treatment, and the hunger target looks within reach.

Big MDG gains continue. For example, over the past 20 years, the likelihood of a child dying before age five has been nearly cut in half, which means about 17,000 children are saved every day. Globally, the maternal mortality ratio dropped by 45 per cent between 1990 and 2013.

Antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected people has saved 6.6 million lives since 1995, and expanding its coverage could save many more. Between 2000 and 2012, an estimated 3.3 million deaths from malaria were averted due to substantial expansion of malaria interventions. Since 1995, efforts to fight tuberculosis saved an estimated 22 million lives.

Guyana has made tremendous gains in achieving the MDG targets. This country has advanced in its efforts to reduce hunger, increase access to social services and benefits, improve enrolment in and completion of primary education, increase empowerment of women and achieve environmental sustainability.

There is still a need for more concerted efforts to be made on all fronts in confronting the challenges we face in relation to the other MDGs. The prospects of achieving all the MDGs will be vastly improved with the sustained economic growth and its effects on household income, revenue generation and public expenditure outlays. The broader political climate will remain critical in creating a conducive environment to encourage greater capital investment in the country and slow down the outward migration of critical professional and technical skills.

Some MDG targets related to largely preventable problems with available solutions, such as reducing child and maternal mortality and increasing access to sanitation, are slipping away from achievement by 2015.

Since 1990, 2.3 billion people have gained access to an improved drinking water source. Over one-quarter of the world’s population has gained access to improved sanitation since 1990, yet one billion people still resort to open defecation. Therefore, much greater effort and investment will be needed to alter inadequate sanitation facilities.

In relation to maternity deaths, worldwide, almost 300,000 women died in 2013 from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Most pregnant women in developing regions see a skilled health provider at least once, but only half get the recommended four antenatal check-ups. Of note too is that preventable conditions, such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, are the main killers for children under age five.

In 2012, an estimated 25 per cent of children under age five were stunted -- having inadequate height for their age.

While this is a significant decline from 40 per cent in 1990, 162 million young children still suffer frompreventable, chronic under-nutrition.

With the targets for the MDGs set to conclude at the end of 2015, UN member states are in the midst of considering a broader set of goals to follow that are likely to be agreed by world leaders in September 2015. We are in agreement with the report’s conclusion which states: “Continued progress towards the MDGs in the remaining year is essential for what comes next.”

An analysis of human life (Part Two) Dear Editor, Social development: People are social beings; we are all social beings, we need people in our lives. Without people gathering together as a family, a unit, a community, a nation, we would be lost. When last have you and your family enjoyed an outing in the country? To be anti-social is to be non-productive. We need to connect to a group, a club, a Church somewhere, somehow and not just any group. Families need to gather around a table and eat a sumptuous meal and really socialise, rather than wait for the funeral service of Uncle George or Aunt Marg.

Spiritual development: We are all made up of three unique parts; there is Spirit, Soul and Body. Now the body’s development requires several factors which include food and exercise which help in the development of the physical aspect of life. Now we are faced with a different kind of challenge.

Spiritual development, this, like the brain I would dare say, presents the greatest challenge to us all. The spiritual and moral aspect of life is always the most difficult to bring under control. The discipline that is employed in developing the human spirit is governed by several principles so high and yet so low, that we sometimes miss the entire picture.

How do you develop your spiritual being? Is it by reading an inspiring book on human stories? Or do we have to withdraw from society and go on a mountain top to spend time with the Creator?

I think not! We develop our moral and spiritual being through simple prayers and meditations coupled with good works. Many have used this concept to their advantage, only to realise that it

works.

Challenges are all around me like bees, but if I understand the sweetness and nutritional value of honey, I would harness the bees and enjoy a life of fruitfulness.

Some of us were designed, but not yet programmed to face challenges.

Two things that will enable and prepare us to face challenges in the scheme of life are the most simple of all our considerations; regardless of whether that challenge lies in the home, at work, or otherwise, it is laughter and singing. When we allow ourselves to laugh in the midst of a challenge, such action neutralises the muscular and nervous systems in the body, and as such, places us in an advantageous position.

It is like standing on the top of a high hill and overlooking the issues of life and knowing their source and solutions. Just try laughing the next time you are faced with a challenge.

And what about singing?

Singing with a deep passion and not just from your lips will most certainly bring you into an understanding of life that will change the perspective of your situation.

Whether it is a love song; or a song of faith, assurance, celebration, life, praise, power, salvation, or redemption. It doesn’t matter what song you choose to sing, just sing with all your might and passion and you will experience such release, you will be singing for the rest of your day.

Finally, when you have done all your laughing, and singing your heart out, you must now do the final act that will most certainly bring you to overcome every challenge in your life. Pray! Yes, that’s right, pray and not just pray but pray the prayer that works all the time and every time regardless of how

intense the challenges are.

The LORD’S PRAYER: Our Father who art in Heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come…………………………..

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever, Amen.

Laughter and singing will bring you relief from all of your challenges, but this model prayer will bring you an answer to all of your challenges. Luke 11:2-4 and Matthew 6:13.

The key element in this model prayer is hidden in the fact that it will not get you any real results, if it is said as a memory thing or a recitation. You must dissect this prayer and meditate on every line as if your life depends upon its’ dynamics and connotations.

The first element in the scheme of life – Challenges!!

The dimensions of rewards Every one of us loves rewards. We look forward to receiving rewards ever since we were children. Mommy or daddy would reward us for doing some task to their expectation.

It is said that rewards come after hard work; while that may be true, there is a much more excellent way to obtain rewards, without hard work. And that does not mean that this conference is advocating rewards without labour.

Many people work for rewards and I respect that, but with the C.R.O.W method/ analysis, rewards work for people who make a difference.

There are many scopes or dimensions of rewards; someone may be rewarded with a child after 15 years of marriage; others may be rewarded with a husband of their

dreams after many years of setbacks or disappointments. What about someone obtaining a visa to enter the United States of America after being turned down three or four times? Should we not consider someone receiving a new car as a gift from a philanthropist a reward?

The word benefits may allude to rewards. We were designed to receive rewards in varying dimensions. And to enjoy life to the fullest with the benefits that should come our way. There are people living in our world today who would reward us for just being who we are: true, honest and gifted. How many times do a singer whose song has touched the hearts of generous folks and they showered him/her with a reward – I would say countless. Making a difference in a world that is indifferent will most certainly bring us into favour with God and man. In the scheme of life, the great Creator sets in place the challenges we face in life, and thereafter orchestrate our rewards.

Rewards motivate, inspire, and push us to achieve in life far above and beyond ourselves.

This C.R.O.W theory is not just a theory, but is based on a Divine principle that cannot be easily dismissed.

It is a concept that is crafted within the word of God. Children are a reward.

Marriage comes as a reward, promotion even when not merited is always a reward, and a medical report that comes back negative for a 60-year-old is definitely a reward. Indeed, there are numerous dimensions of rewards.

The second element in the scheme of life: Rewards.

Tackling suicide Dear Editor, While suicide prevention is a shared responsibility for the whole of Guyanese society, the Education Ministry is the key Government agency responsible for leading and coordinating the implementation of a strategy and action plan for suicide prevention.

I propose the following, adapted from research, which could be implemented over a four-year period.

The overarching aim would be to reduce the rate of suicidal behaviour and its effects on the lives of Guyanese.

The plan has seven goals: * Promote mental health and well-being, and prevent mental health problems * Improve the care of people who are experiencing mental disorders associated with suicidal behaviour * Improve the care of people who attempt suicide. * Reduce access to the means of suicide * Promote the safe reporting and portrayal of suicidal behaviour by the media * Support families/communities, friends and others affected by suicide or attempted suicide * Expand the evidence about the rates and causes of suicide and effective interventions.

For it to be successful, it has to be cross-sectoral bringing together the work of all relevant youths, health and mental health agencies and religious bodies.

The plan would include actions designed to: * strengthen support for family and communities * build the evidence base, specifically around what works for teenagers and specifically males, as opposed to

females * extend existing services, specifically addressing gaps in coverage * strengthen suicide prevention targeted to high-risk groups The responsibility for the implementation of any such plan lies not only with Government agencies but with the Police, Nongovernmental Organisations (NGOs) and religious bodies.

Suicide and suicide prevention are issues for the entire society and, therefore, suicide prevention activities should aim to develop a sense of place and promote connectedness to the community. It is important for individuals to understand they can recover from a suicide attempt and reconnect with the community and support services.

Suicide is a highly complex issue with many contributing factors. Homeless people; mentally or physically impaired persons; substance abusers; and those identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender are among the at-risk groups, while a history of suicidal behaviour, the feeling of lacking control over life circumstances and poor coping skills are red flags. Broader social and contextual factors can also increase risk of suicide. Social determinants include living in rural and remote areas, social isolation, imprisonment, bereavement, abuse and violence, and the breakdown of family and personal relationships; while contextual determinants can include homelessness, unemployment or financial strain, or transition from institutional settings.

Not all individuals with these determinants are at risk and those that are

may only be at risk at certain points in their life.

According to research, the majority of people who can be categorised as at risk do not, and will not, ever take their own life.

Equally, there are a number of protective factors which reduce the likelihood of suicidal behaviour and improve a person’s ability to cope with difficult circumstances. One of the key aims in suicide prevention is to develop these protective factors in individuals and communities, including resilience; self-esteem, secure identity and sense of purpose; problem-solving and help seeking; and good physical health and well-being.

I simply responded to his comment and told him that if it was any Government official or his family or friends, the company would have made it their priority to run the cameras for them immediately. He looked at me in disgust and said he “cannot help” us and walked away. I was left shocked and wondered, why have surveillance cameras if they won’t be of any help to customers?

As a patron of the popular hotel, I am wondering why should I spend my money at a place where the managers and staff cannot afford us five minutes of their time to give patrons proper service and assistance in such a dilemma. Had it been a manager who had accidentally left down the day’s earnings or his phone in this

case and someone picked it up, would the manager check when he has “spare time” to recover his property? No, they would have taken immediate action to recover it.

I understand that we were in a place that always attracts people in numbers and that your personal property is your responsibility, but one thinks that such a prestigious company would have been a good corporate citizen and assisted in every possible way by providing surveillance footage so that the culprit could be made known.

It is the customers who make an establishment successful and they should be satisfied at the end of the day, but instead I was given the ‘royal run around’ by the hotel owners. I was forced to seek legal advice on this matter, since I was given no assistance by the uncouth staff and managers of this prestigious hotel. I have since made a Police report.

Nirvana Foundation presents UN strengthens regulations on lead in infant formula, arsenic in rice “Visa Wedding II”

he Nirvana Humanitarian Foundation (NHF) Inc has taken aim at the scourge of suicide in the sequel to its popular play “Visa Wedding”.

Written by acclaimed Guyana-born actor and cultural figure Ramesh Deochand and Padma Nagesar, “Visa Wedding II” has as one of its central themes, suicide and some of its drivers: alcoholism, dysfunctional family relationships, and lack of empathetic communication. Linked to the typical Guyanese’s quest for migration to the US through marriage, in what has become known as the visa wedding phenomenon, the story strikes at the heart of expectations that typify many Guyanese families.

Filled with humour, oftentimes delivered through the vehicle of the Guyanese dialect, the story also emphasises the need for clinical counselling and appropriate commu-

nication in addressing suicidal behaviour and relationship issues.

This must-see play, the result of public demand for more of “Visa Wedding”, although filled with laughter-provoking moments, will set the audience thinking and hopefully impart insights into how suicidal behaviour can be addressed.

N food standards body the Codex Alimentarius Commission this week adopted new standards to protect consumer health worldwide, including setting out maximum acceptable levels of lead in infant formula and of arsenic in rice.

Jointly run by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Codex Alimentarius Commission sets international food safety and quality standards to promote safer and more nutritious food for consumers worldwide. Codex standards serve in many cases as a basis for national legislation, and provide the food safety benchmarks for international food trade.

The annual meeting this week was attended by representatives from 170 countries and the European Union (EU), as well as 30 international governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Lead in infant formula

The Codex Alimentarius Commission adopted a recommendation that no more than 0.01mg per kg of lead should be permitted in infant formula as consumed.

Infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of lead. They can suffer profound and permanent adverse health effects, particularly affecting the development of the brain and nervous system, which can diminish their ability to learn.

Lead occurs in the environment and trace amounts can end up in the ingredients that are used in the production of infant formu-

la.

Levels of lead in infant formula can be controlled by sourcing raw materials from areas where lead is less present.

Arsenic in rice

For the first time, Codex has adopted a maximum level for arsenic in rice of 0.2 mg/kg.

Long-term exposure to arsenic can cause cancer and skin lesions. It has also been associated with developmental effects, heart disease, diabetes, and damage the nervous system and brain.

Arsenic is naturally present at high levels in the groundwater and soil in some parts of the world.

The toxic element can enter the food chain when it is absorbed by crops from water and soil.

Rice in particular can take up more arsenic than other crops and as a staple food for millions of people can contribute significantly to arsenic exposure, which is detrimental to human health.

Arsenic contamination in rice is of particular concern in some Asian countries where paddy fields are irrigated with groundwater containing arsenic-rich sediments pumped from shallow tube wells. Improved irrigation and agricultural practices can help reduce arsenic contamination, for example growing crops in raised beds instead of flooded fields.

The Commission also agreed to develop a new code of practice that will help countries comply with the maximum level set and provide producers with good agricultural and manufacturing techniques to prevent and reduce contamination.

Codex recommended that the use of certain veterinary drugs should be restricted in food-producing animals in order to prevent residual amounts of the drugs remaining in meat, milk, eggs or honey.

The eight drugs (chloramphenicol, malachite green, carbadox, furazolidone, nitrofural, chlorpromazine, stilbenes and olaquinadox), including antimicrobials and growth promoters, can potentially have adverse effects on human health and may contribute to the development of drug resistance.

Veterinary drugs

Countries also agreed on maximum levels of pesticide residues and additives in foods as well as maximum levels of contaminants, including toxins called fumonisins that are produced by mould growing on maize. Other measures include new safety and quality standards for foods such as raw scallops, passion fruit, durian and okra.

Countries decided on a range of topics for future development, including establishing standards for black, white and green pepper, cumin, oregano, thyme and garlic, and setting maximum levels for cadmium in chocolate and cocoa-derived products.

The Commission also discussed the need for a Codex standard for readyto-eat foods for malnourished children, on the proposal from UNICEF, to guarantee the safety and quality of such foods. The Commission decides to follow up on this discussion at its Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses.

Limacol CPL sparks ...sharp increase in tourist arrivals, hotel bookings

here has been a sharp increase in tourist arrivals and hotel booking for the Guyana leg of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League, a senior tourism official has confirmed.

Checks at some of the major hotels in the city revealed that some facilities have been fully booked, while others have experienced sharp increases in bookings. The Guyana Government had said it would be working earnestly to exploit the benefits that can be derived from the second staging of the Limacol CPL in 2014, given its resounding success and contributions to national and regional tourism growth in 2013.

Last year, several hotels were fully booked, and entertainment hotspots and restaurants packed. Scores of

Guyanese opted to return home, while many Caribbean Community (Caricom) citizens wanted to catch part of the action. The tournament also managed to create quite a stir in the Diaspora because of the composition of the teams with the mixture of local, regional, and international players, and the hype and party atmosphere associated with the League.

Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister (ag) Irfaan Ali had told Guyana Times that Limacol CPL is now considered one of the flagship tourism events of the year. “I think the LCPL is here to stay and the partnerships that it would have established across the Region are good and were a resounding success, as there are tremendous economic and social benefits therein

which far outweigh the investments made,” he said.

He acknowledged the potential of the tournament to provide the greatest opportunities for sport tourism in Guyana, the Region, and beyond.

“In 2013, though the tournament had a very short planning window, the benefits that it brought to the regional economy were indeed enormous.

Guyana even benefited, additionally, by having one of its national products (Limacol) being the overall sponsor for the tournament,” he explained.

Meanwhile, regarding arrivals, Guyana Times was told that there has been a sharp increase. “In fact, we had expected this since early in the year... so we are seeing that right now,” the tourism official said.

IAC calls for review of national governance initiatives

he Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) is calling for a review of national governance initiatives in light of demographic shifts, which it noted must be seen as part of its contribution to the long-term stability and unity of the country.

The indo-based organisation expressed these sentiments in light of commentaries and opinions regarding its press release dated July 3, titled “IAC calls for paradigm shift in light of population decrease”.

The IAC also said it welcomes constructive and vehement free debate on governance and related subjects.

“The IAC has already reached out to a number of academics, social activists, and political minds, in and out of Guyana with the aim of developing a programme of discussion on its suggestion for an urgent review of governance initiatives.

“The time has come for serious and genuine discourse on matters that will ensure the building of a stronger and more cohesive society so that all Guyanese can enjoy and those fully in the peace, security and wealth as similarly structured societies have demonstrated.

On that note, the IAC reiterates a few salient points

expressed in the previous release.

These are: the IAC is not affiliated to any political party nor is it promoting “supremacy” of any ethnic group; the IAC, throughout its decade-long existence, has been promoting and protecting the culture of and address other related matters of concerns to the IndoGuyanese community; and the IAC has worked and will continue to work with organisations representing other ethnic groups with the aim of promoting respect, tolerance and national unity when is required in a diverse society such as Guyana.

Body of missing fisherman found at Mahaicony Foreshore

he badly decomposed body of one of the fishermen missing after last Tuesday’s alleged pirate attack in Suriname washed up at the Good Faith Foreshore in Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Thursday afternoon.

The body of Andrew Goppie, 41, of Sand Reef, Annandale, ECD, was badly decomposed and he was positively identified by his missing teeth. His sister, Debbie, confirmed that he did not have four of his front teeth hence the identification was a smooth process.

The body was still clad in pieces of cloth and was lying face down. Portions of the deceased’s body parts were missing and believed to have been eaten by fishes.

The grieving sister told Guyana Times that a search party left Annandale early Thursday morning and found the body about 15:48h. The woman said during the search, the team saw carrion crows circling the area and went to the location the birds were circling where they made the discovery.

She said after the discovery, her husband, who was a part of the search team, contacted her to relay the news,

but she was a little sceptical and more so hopeful that the body was not that of her brother. However, later, her worst fears were confirmed.

In tears, she told this publication that her brother, whom she described as a simple guy, only started to work with the boat owner a few months ago, although he had been in the fishing business for some time.

She recalled receiving the news of his disappearance a few days after the attack and was told that he was beaten and thrown overboard.

Family in disarray She said she prayed for her brother’s safety and while they knew there was a 50-50 chance of him surviving, the news of his body being found has left the family in disarray.

The relatives of the other three missing men, Vinesh Drunarine of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara; and Raymond Gomes, 37, and Chandrapaul Jallim, 19, of Recht-Door-Zee, West Bank Demerara are also bracing themselves for the worst.

area, they went in their direction and encountered a heavy stench. As they drew close to the foreshore, the stench intensified and finally they saw a body. They were not sure whose it was; after she looked closely, she knew it was not that of Gomes. After a while, she added, the relatives of the other men arrived at the scene and eventually, Goppie’s body was identified by his sister.

The four men went missing two Tuesdays ago after they were attacked, beaten, and thrown overboard during a pirate attack on their vessel. The vessel owned by Deochand Bharat was found on Monday last drifting in the Mahaica area.

The captain of the boat, Feroze, reportedly swam some 19 hours before reaching land after which he alerted Surinamese law enforcement officers. The local Police were also contacted. They are in contact with their counterparts in the sister Caricom State. Several searches were conducted in the area and along the Corentyne Coast for the men, but all were in vain until now.

The captain remains in custody, while the owner of the vessel is counting his losses.

28 graduate from IDCE health and safety course

he Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE) on Thursday wrapped up its annual Workplace Safety and Health Certificate Course

with a grand graduation ceremony at its headquarters in Queen’s College Compound, Camp Street, Georgetown.

The IDCE – an extension arm of the University of

Guyana, is one of the major adult education institutions in Guyana. The main objective of the programme was to develop a corps of persons who are capable of identify-

ing safety and health hazards at their respective organisations and formulating effective accident prevention programmes. The programme lasted for 15 weeks. There was a school of 28 students who attended the programme.

Some workplaces that were on board were GuySuCo, CCS Neal & Massy Guyana Ltd, the Labour Ministry, and the majority of the students came from Georgetown Public Hospital.

During the graduation ceremony, two students reflected on the course. Dotsy Douglas and Doodnauth Chand said their experience has been a “frustrated and saturated” one. There were days when the sessions would be challenging but the tutors whom they described as “extremely nice and jovial” helped them to pull through. All the students agreed that they are fully knowledgeable about safety and health practices and can better perform at their respective workplaces.

GuySuCo Health and Safety Officer Earl Morris, who was the guest speaker at the graduation, said he has seen a positive change in the workers at GuySuCo in terms of their work ethic.

“From what I have noticed, the GuySuCo workers have definitely changed, I see that they are very well-equipped now more than ever,” he stated.

Make safety the norm

He further added that safety should not be only for the workplace, as “persons should learn what is wrong from right at an early age, so as they grow older, safety becomes a norm for them and a part of their life”.

The graduates collected certificates in recognition of their hard work and great success. The Best Graduating student was Shavone Ross from NM Security Solutions. Following Ross was Thompson Akpotu, an employee at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

In her Valedictorian Speech, Ross thanked all the persons who would have made the course a successful one for her. She noted that the class was one of the best classes she has ever taken since her school days.

She also expressed gratitude towards her fellow class mates who were there for her “through the rough and tough times”, trying to complete the course.

However, she outlined some problems and concerns which she would like to see be fixed. “Firstly, the First Aid Kit needs updating. In order to teach safety and health, one has to get the necessary equipment,” she stated. The facilities need serious improvement, she added.

The projectors and computers need to be modernised.

Finally, she said for the students who are not outspoken, a suggestion box should be implemented.

Right in their own pride-and-joy “Port of Spain Oval”, the Warriors stormed into Trinidad and whupped those Red Steel so bad, they were dubbed by their own media as “Rusty Steel”. The Warriors had restricted the Rusty Steel to a miserly 103 runs, which they whipped off in 16 overs with seven wickets in hand. Such a drubbing leaves deep scars.

The scar on the Trini nation must’ve been deep like a canyon because the Government decided that the Red Steel can’t call themselves “Trinidad Red Steel” no mo’! They have to drop the “Trinidad”. Now while we understand what the people of Calypso land went through last year, we gotta say, “That’s cooooold, man!!” So are the Red Steel stateless now?? Are they to wander like gypsies from country to country seeking refuge??

Whatever the angst of the Trinidadian Government, this Eyewitness knows that the Red Steel will try to return some pride back into their camp – and maybe weasel their way back into being accepted as “Trinis” once again. But we say this to the Amazon Warriors: while off the field you may skin your teeth, once you enter that field at Providence, IT IS WAR!! And war means TAKE NO PRISONERS. You’ll have 20,000 cricket-starved Guyanese fans who’ve trekked from Point Playa to Crabwood Creek and Georgetown to Lethem to see you WIN. We know we’re putting a teeny weeny bit of pressure on you fellas – BUT YOU G*DDAMN WELL BETTER WIN! This Eyewitness is not a betting man – so he doesn’t know about “odds” and such things.

So we look at a letter from one Claudius Prince, from the southern state of Georgia in the USA – one of the redoubts of racism and backwardness if there was ever one. Prince has been solving Guyana’s problems for years in the letters’ pages. This time he takes on Manickchand’s defence of our country against the meddling by the US. And remember this is against a background of states being destabilised from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe in the name of “democracy” US style.

To make his point that Manickchand was speaking “out of time and place” to US Ambassador Hardt, Prince offers a homily of an African slave sweeper, bowing to a US President, who’s late for his train. The President pauses, bows even lower, and explains to his aide, he wouldn’t be outdone in manners by a slave. Living in Georgia and accepting his PLACE, Prince misses the irony of his parable.

The President’s not to be outdone by a MERE slave... who remains a slave...to sweep to the end of his days.

He was, after all, only three-quarters of a human being!!!

Digicel expands cable TV, broadband footprint with Jamaican acquisition

igicel on Thursday announced that it has reached an agreement with Telstar Cable Limited to acquire its cable and fibre network in Jamaica.

Telstar provides cable TV, broadband and telephony services. On completion, which is subject to approval by the Broadcasting Commission, Digicel will invest significantly in the network to increase coverage and further expand the products, services and content available to cable customers in Jamaica.

The acquisition will be Digicel’s fourth Caribbean

cable acquisition in the last number of months and will increase its cable footprint to six markets. These are the Turks and Caicos Islands, April 2014: Digicel acquired WIV Cable TV in the Turks and Caicos Islands and its sister company, TCT, which offers broadband services; Dominica, February 2014: SAT Telecommunications provides a range of TV, telephony and broadband Internet services to residential and business customers in Dominica; Anguilla, Nevis and Montserrat, November 2013: Digicel acquired Caribbean Cable Communications Holding Limited, a cable TV and Internet service provider in Anguilla, Nevis and Montserrat.

Major fibre build-outs

Digicel has also been investing heavily in greenfield fibre build-outs, having broken ground on next-generation fibre networks in Barbados, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad. This investment in fibre reflects the company’s ongoing focus on business solutions which has shown almost 40 per cent year on year growth in revenues. These fibre builds are nearing completion and pre-selling of the services has already commenced.

In order to drive the delivery of multimedia content – as well as improve offerings for mobile data services and business solutions – Digicel has also secured significant off-island sub-sea fibre bandwidth. In December 2013, Digicel entered into a share and asset purchase agreement with Global Caribbean Fibre to acquire certain submarine fibre assets in the Eastern Caribbean Region. This deal will provide Digicel with a wholly-owned submarine fibre-optic cable network of approximately 2100km providing capacity from Trinidad to Guadeloupe.

The proposed transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the coming weeks.

Govt fumes over private sector’s reluctance to invest in wastewater management

uyana’s private sector is not doing enough to aid in existing waterwaste management infrastructure and is being urged to implement stricter internal waste management policies within their respective bodies.

This was the message delivered by the Housing and Water Ministry to members of the private sector who had gathered at the Red House on Thursday for a workshop to develop a National Waste Management Policy.

The workshop saw atten-

dance from representatives of Guyana Manufacturing Services Association, Caribbean Containers Inc, Local Government and Regional Development Ministry, Demerara Distillers Limited, Sterling Products Limited, Banks DIH, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

During the course of the workshop, the representatives gathered will be urged to provide insight on the development of the policy. The policy will be instrumental in the management of wastewater when it is enforced in the future.

Commit to environmental protection concerns

Delivering the feature address at the commencement of the workshop, Permanent Secretary of the Housing and Water Ministry, Emil Mc Garrell, implored the community to take up arms and fight the waste of water.

Mc Garrell highlighted that the Government of Guyana has shown immense leadership capacity in this regard by enacting relevant legislation and institutions to aid in that regard. The

Permanent Secretary noted that it is expected that the private sector would come on board and “make a commitment to the environmental protection concerns that are occurring in our country”.

He further urged members of the private sector to take advantage of a US$3 million revolving fund initiative, to “springboard” wastewater management strategies, which is available under the Caribbean Wastewater Management Fund Programme. He added that the Government has supplemented this fund by making available an additional US$523,000.

“Even here, the Government has shown its commitment to making available a further US$523,000 as counterfunding to help agencies in the private sector; however, the response from the private sector has been disappointing,” said Mc Garrell.

He articulated that the loans are available at the agency rates that are far below the regular concessionary rate. The Permanent Secretary urged that the

agencies not see investments in the areas as an expensive undertaking, but rather as an opportunity to help put Guyana on the frontlines when the time comes where freshwater would be scarce. He noted that effective wastewater management would put Guyana at a distinct advantage in the future when the world is at its wits’ end to find fresh water.

“We must not see this investment in water-waste management as a costly exercise but instead look at it as an opportunity to gain the value from waste management through sequestration of nutrients,” Mc Garrell explained.

However, while he scolded those companies for not putting waste management infrastructure in place, Mc Garrell lauded the management of Banks DIH Limited which recently installed a $200 million Waste Water Treatment facility at its Thirst Park location.

It was noted too that the Environmental Protection Agency and the Guyana National Bureau of Standards are in the process of updating the policies governing the National Standards for waste emission and management.

“The issue that we have to deal with is a real issue, it is a big issue.... the disruption that it can cause on our lives is very tremendous,” Mc Garrell said.

Suspect in Lusignan teen’s death for ID parade today T

he 25-year-old taxi driver, Ryan Ross, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, who was arrested on Tuesday for questioning into the murder of Ashminie Harriram is expected to be placed on an identification parade today.

According to information received, the young man remains in custody as the main suspect in the heinous crime.

Reports are that the young man used to operate a burgundy car in a taxi service in Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, but after the shooting death of the young woman, he stopped working claiming that the vehicle had mechanical problems.

In addition, investigators have also taken statements from the mechanic who claimed that Ross contacted him about three weeks ago, informing him of the problems and promising to bring the car in for an analysis.

She was reportedly returning home from Georgetown with a cousin when a man emerged from a car parked along the Railway Embankment, some six houses from where she resided, snatched her mobile phone and shot her once to the neck.

She reportedly fell to the roadway after which the perpetrator entered the car and sped away, without anyone seemingly getting a look at his licence plate.

Guyana Amazon Warriors interact with young, aspiring cricketers

ven though members of the Guyana Amazon Warriors were busy on Wednesday practising for Thursday’s match against the Trinidad and Tobago’s Red Steel, a few of them dedicated some time to meet with several young aspiring cricketers at the Everest Cricket Club Ground.

Also at the event, were several differently-abled children who were indeed happy to be bowled at by some of the best in the team. With smiles on their faces, the little boys and girls enjoyed every minute of the time the team members spent with them.

As usual, Digicel Guyana spearheaded the activity with the objective of getting the players to give special tips to the youngsters in all aspects of the game. The team was led by Guyanese all-rounder Christopher Barnwell.

She added that the children were brought from several clubs and schools in the city to be a part of the event organised with them in mind. Sanchara also noted that Digicel remains committed to the development of the sport and more so, the young

people who have a passion for it.

Being one of the major sponsors of the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Limacol Caribbean Premier League, the Communications Manager said tickets are selling like hot cakes for the

three matches to be played in Guyana. She encouraged Guyanese to get their tickets as early as possible.

She said Digicel has been working around the clock to make sure they are ready for games, not only by promoting the event, but also by getting the cheerleaders in order.

These cheerleaders, she noted, are prepared to entertain the crowd at one of the biggest parties in sport.

On this note, she added that the sport has evolved over the years and with the Limacol CPL, it is the greatest opportunity Guyana has to showcase itself to the rest of the world. The second edition of the Limacol CPL got under way on Friday last in Grenada with three matches played in two days.

In Guyana, the Amazon Warriors played the Red Steel on Thursday. It will look to capture the St Lucia Zouks on Saturday and tame the Jamaica Tallawahs on Sunday.

PPP reiterates calls Golden Fleece Rice Investment increases payment to farmers for GECOM to T clean up voters list

T

he People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has once again renewed its call for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to ensure proper and adequate mechanisms are in place, so that eligible voters are placed in their respective constituency lists.

The party in a statement said it strongly believes that thorough ground work of physically placing voters correctly on their list is badly and urgently needed.

The PPP is also urging GECOM to sort out all outstanding issues surrounding boundaries in preparation for Local Government Elections.

This can only be done with the involvement of and consultation with the major political stakeholders. The PPP puts GECOM on notice as regards it readiness to be involved in this process.

Further, with the Claims and Objections period set to commence on August 4, the ruling party said as highlighted in earlier statements, almost 10,000 persons are yet to be transferred, especially those in the New Housing Schemes in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six. It is expected that no effort will be spared by GECOM to ensure that this figure is drastically reduced, if not reduced in its totality.

“It is our expectation that mobile units will be used in the new schemes on days and times convenient to residents as well as in the hinterland communities. The party has already raised its concerns with GECOM on the meagre public relations and notification to residents of its services as well as in respect of its mo-

bile units spending little or no time in certain communities.

“Our party has noted the proposed seven years expiration period for the validity of Identification Cards. We are of the view that more consultations are needed before a final decision is made on this complex matter in this regard.

Since, proposal will mean that on the expiration of one’s I’d card the holder will be automatically deleted from the NRRDB [National Register of Registrant Data Base]. This will result in many Guyanese including those living and studying overseas becoming disenfranchised in the eventuality there be no time for re-registration in order to receive a new card. It is important too, to consider the costs of such an exercise and GECOM’s ability to process every Guyanese in an efficient and timely manner.”

The PPP is concerned too over the amount of critical vacancies existing at GECOM and calls on the Commissioner to expedite its efforts for recruiting qualified and experienced persons to fill these vacancies through a transparent and impartial recruitment process.

“It is our view that the Commission members should be consulted and involved in this process, since we have expressed our dissatisfaction time and again on the recruitment process of GECOM. “Finally, we call on GECOM to ensure that its readiness for an election must be based on its ability to fulfil its constitutional mandate without prejudice or disenfranchisement to any Guyanese,” the statement concluded.

raff Emanuel, a labourer from the Lower Pomeroon River was on Tuesday sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for simple larceny when he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

It was alleged that on April 14, he stole a motor blower from Rupan Ramotar’s farm in the Pomeroon. He made a court appearance on April 18, when he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

A trial on the matter was conducted on July 16 and he was found guilty of stealing the equipment.

WPA recommits to marriage with PNCR ... despite Rodney CoI revelations

he Working People’s Alliance (WPA) on Tuesday recommitted to its political alliance with the Peoples National Congress Reform,a party accused of killing one of its founder members, Dr Walter Rodney.

The WPA and the PNCR are the two main parties under the A Partnership For National Unity coalition. At the ongoing Rodney CoI, there have been a number of startling revelations about the PNC administration’s aggression against the WPA in the 1970-80s which culminated with the killing of Rodney. But the WPA Co-Leader Dr Rupert Roopnaraine has been on record as saying that the outcome of the CoI would not affect their relationship with the PNCR.

The other parties in the APNU coalition are: the National Front Alliance (NFA) headed by Member of Parliament Keith Scott and the Justice for All Party (JFA) head by CN Sharma.

JFA’s Jaipaul Sharma had resigned his parliamentary seat and walked away from the coalition after its leader and chief whip refused to defend him against some comments made by Education Minister Priya Manickchand about the charges brought against his father which included allegations of child molestation.

The four political parties had allied in 2011 ahead of the General Elections which they contested under the newly formed party APNU. The David Granger-led coalition came out of the 2011 elections with over 175,000 votes and together with the Alliance For Change (AFC), brought about a new dispensation in the National Assembly with the opposition parties holding the most seats in the house.

Bitter past

Speaking at a press conference to mark the anniversary of the coalition, Dr Roopnaraine said that under the new dispensation, the National Assembly has been able to achieve more than it has in the last quarter century. He said that when the WPA decided to join forces with the PNCR it was cognizant of the gruelling past of the political parties. He

said the members were “fully aware that they had to overcome a legacy of bitter antagonism” but that did not serve as a deterrent to the initiative.

Subsequent to their alliance, he contended that the WPA is now an “integral” part of the coalition and works with other parties in the coalition in the drafting and enforcement of policies.

Further, he articulated that the work conducted in the National Assembly by the coalition has “raised expectations” of the populace in terms of what can be expected of Government Ministers and parliamentary officials.

Under achieve

The Tenth Parliament, however Roopnaraine said “has not been able to achieve what it was poised

to achieve.” He said that there is greater “access to information because of the insistence of the APNU to hold the Government accountable”, but added that engagements with the Government have “fallen short of my (his) own expectations.”

He however noted that the APNU has had its challenges in the National Assembly, but at each step the party has been able to emerge victorious in its quest for full accountability on the part of the Government. He said that “society is losing grip on itself” as he noted that calls for “reconciliation should be listened to, heeded and acted upon.”

Meanwhile, PNCR Chairman Basil Williams also highlighted that it was a tough task to reconfigure the National Assembly given the previously established dispensation that was dominant since the first post-independence Parliament convened in 1966.

Williams, who also serves as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly said that the coalition remains steadfast in its challenge to “to assert the independence and authority” of the National Assembly from the reins of the executive branch of Government.

NFA Leader Keith Scott noted that since the forming of the coalition in 2011, its goals and objectives have become obvious. He said that “the vision of unity has crystallised.”

During the press conference, Scott opined that it is now time for the APNU to re-open its doors and make room for more political parties. He said that “the time has now come to extend the partnership.”

Granger, who also celebrated his birth anniversary on the same day with the coalition, said that the coalition recommits itself its 2011 General Elections manifesto – a good life for all Guyanese. Granger said that the APNU will continue to work towards creating a stable society, one in which children could look forward to better schools, youths could expect employment, workers could be more secure in their jobs and women, girl-children and the aged could feel safe in their homes.

“Our vision is clear; our mission is certain. APNU’s task will be to fulfil its obligation to the nation, both through the legislative process in the National Assembly and in the country at large” said Granger.

Granger however opined that the work of the Opposition has been hindered in large part by the executive arm of the Government, as he noted that several parliamentary resolutions have gone unheeded by President Donald Ramotar.

GWI sewerage works keep Camp and New Market Streets junction closed

he New Market and Camp Streets junction will remain close for the next 14 days, even as the US$10 million Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP) progresses.

Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), in a press release on Wednesday, said civil works at the junction will be completed within two weeks, noting that until then it will remain closed to traffic.

According to GWI, the closure will facilitate the completion of the ‘main gate valve chambers’ which form

repairs to all roadways in the vicinity of the main project areas will continue,” the Chief Executive stated, “we apologise to all road users for the inconvenience.” He further explained that while GWI will repair all roads excavated for the purpose of the GSIP, portions of the roadways which were in disrepair prior to the commencement of the GSIP civil works are not within the scope of the programme. GWI will continue to consistently monitor all works, including road repairs, being conducted by the contractor (S Jagmohan/ Nabi Consortium).

Giving an overview of the project, Browne said it was progressing smoothly, pointing out that all of the 24 sewerage pump stations are fully operational. In addition, the completion of the main gate valve chambers marks the final stages of the decommissioning of the old sewer mains.

Inconvenience regretted

He made this disclosure during a tour of all the GSIP civil works sites by GWI Chief Executive Officer Shaik Baksh. The CEO said the company regrets any inconvenience to commuters but emphasised the importance of completing all civil works to satisfactory standards.

“As we await full completion of the works at New Market and Camp Streets,

GSIP is being funded by the Government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with the executing agency being GWI. The project is aimed at improving the operational performance of the Georgetown Sewerage System.

Components of the Programme, which was initiated since December 2010, include the complete replacement of the 5.5-kilometre Sewerage Ring Main in Georgetown; replacement of all delivery mains; purchase and installation of additional pumps for 24 pumping stations to ensure adequate pressure, operational reliability and the improvement of electrical connections. It also includes an assessment and emergency rehabilitation of street sewers in selected areas and the purchase of maintenance and operating equipment.

Further, the implementation of the GSIP included the strengthening of GWI’s wastewater management and energy efficiency systems. This component involved the development of an asset management implementation strategy, as well as staff training programmes on wastewater operations, maintenance practices and energy use.

Malaysian jet ‘shot down’ over Ukraine – all 295 onboard dead

Malaysia Airlines passenger jet which crashed as it flew over eastern Ukraine with 295 people on board was reportedly shot down.

The aircraft, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10,000 metres when it was shot down on Thursday, Russia’s Interfax reported.

An adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry told the news agency the Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko denied his armed forces were involved in the downing of the airliner.

“Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets,” Poroshenko said.

He called the loss of the plane an “act of terrorism”, but the rebels denied shooting it down.

Separatists are believed to have shot down two Ukrainian military planes over the region in recent days.

Malaysian Airlines confirmed it had lost contact with Flight MH17 from Amsterdam, saying the aircraft was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew.

None are believed to have survived the crash.

Investigation launched

The aircraft was flying normally, without problems until it disappeared from the radar, the head of the Ukrainian airspace regulatory body told Reuters news agency.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Najib Razak, reacted on Twitter saying: “I am shocked by reports that an MH plane crashed. We are launching an immediate investigation.”

The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said he had been in touch with Ukraine’s President. “I am deeply shocked by the dramatic

reports on the crash of of Malaysia Airlines MH17,” Rutte said.

Dutch tour operators have told local media they had booked dozens of Dutch citizens onto the flight.

“Much is still unclear about the facts, circumstances and the passengers,” Rutte said of the flight, which is listed on flight-tracking websites as sharing planes on some routes with Dutch national airline KLM. One flight-tracking website showed that the flight path of MH17 was interrupted over Ukraine. The plane appeared to have come down in a region of military action where Ukrainian Government forces are battling pro-Russian separatists.

A separate unnamed source in the Ukrainian security apparatus, quoted by Interfax, said the plane disappeared from radar at a height of 10,000 metres after which it came down near the town of Shakhtyorsk.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands, reporting from Moscow, said the plane fell in an area controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

“The investigation would be very difficult given that it’s controlled by the rebels,” he said.

“Ukrainian officials are saying that many children were dead. Some are saying that all died. Reuters is reporting that body parts were found at the scene. It seems that it was a very gruesome scene.”

In April, the US Federal Aviation Administration warned American airlines to avoid the airspace over the region because it poses the “potential for conflicting air traffic control instructions from Ukrainian and Russian authorities and ... the misidentification of civil aircraft.”

Airplane manufacturer Boeing released a statement expressing sympathy to those affected by the crash.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those on board the Malaysia Airlines airplane lost over Ukrainian airspace, as well as their families and loved ones.

Boeing stands ready to provide whatever assistance is requested by authorities,” the statement read.

Prior to Thursday’s Malaysian Airlines crash, a Ukrainian SU-25 attack plane was taken down by an air-to-air missile according to Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s National Defence and Security Council. The pilot safely ejected.

On March 8, Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 passenger jet disappeared from radar screens en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, twothirds of whom were from China.

“It’s not over till it’s over” – Guyana Amazon Warriors melt Red Steel in Super Over

A

good listener is a good learner and it seems the Guyana Amazon Warriors listened well when Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise owner Dr Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop told them recently that the game is “not over until it’s over”, as they indeed fought until it was over.

The Amazon Warriors clawed their way back from an early batting collapse to tie their game against Red Steel before coming out convincing winners in the Super Over on Thursday night at the Guyana National Stadium.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine was simply unplay-

Amazon Warriors Christopher Barnwell and James Neesham walked out in the super over clash and they scored nine off the first three balls off Kevon Cooper, with Barnwell hitting the first ball for a six.

Barnwell was dismissed run out off the fourth ball.

Neesham missed the fifth and the hosts then scored a bye off the final ball to finish with 11/1 off the super over.

Needing 12 runs for victory, Narine bowled a wicket maiden as Pooran failed

A fashionable collapse of the Warriors top order threw the run chase into disarray as the hosts were reeling at 56 for six at the half way stage of the innings.

With the crowd gone almost silent, the words “it’s not over till it’s over” may have been resonating in the batsmen’s heads as it was clearly spoken when the Amazon Warriors had returned from Grenada following their narrow win against the Hawksbills.

Refusing to die, even after Lendl Simmons, who made a fighting 32, was dismissed, Christopher Barnwel singlehandedly inspired a fantastic lower order comeback.

The Guyanese allrounder was running out of partners but kept the match alive with his superb 40-ball 37 knock in which he plundered two sixes and a four before he was dismissed; leaving the hosts 14 runs short of the winning target.

Sunil Narine also played a crucial hand, adding vital runs with Barnwell to be the next best contributor with the bat.

Leg spinner Samuel Badree (3-18) was the visitors’ best bowler on show, while Kevon Cooper (2-19), Fidel Edwards (2-29) and Sulieman Benn (1-29) were the other successful bowlers.

Guyana brings best crowd to Limacol CPL 2014

uyana, only 30 minutes into the game, had the best crowd of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) when the first match for this year’s edition was held here on Thursday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

The atmosphere was electric inside of the stadium as fans filled the seats to cheer their Amazon Warriors.

Fans were seen with face and body paintings highlighting their support for the home team while others were waving their Golden Arrow Head flags frantically while the music of the Palm Court VIP Party Stand filled the night's sky.

Allana Chesney, a fan from Meadowbrook, noted that the atmosphere was amazing.

"This is electric, the best place to be right now, Amazon Warriors all the way...wooooo!"

Another fan, decorated in Amazon Warriors face and body paints highlighted that Guyana needs more cricket.

"This is the place for cricket as you

can see, I guarantee that Guyana will sell out this stadium, I don't know why we are not getting games but this is our culture."

A fan, who was part of the almost sold-out Red Stand, was not shy to declare that the Amazon Warriors would go on to win the tournament.

"If we will win, that's not even in the question, we are going all the way, last year was Chris Gayle, this year it's us all the way," said the fan who disclosed that he was all the way from Berbice.

Meanwhile, the large crowd broke into mass celebration when Guyana tied the game to force a Super Over, in what is more than likely the most thrilling match of the Limacol CPL. There was more excitement in store for the fans as Amazon Warriors franchise player Sunil Narine bowled Guyana to victory with a wicket maiden.

The game on Thursday set a very high pace for the two weekend games and there is no doubt that there are more thrills in store for fans, which would probably guarantee that there may not be an empty seat available in Part of the crowd at the Limacol CPL match at the Guyana National Stadium on Thursday any of the stands on match days.

five-day Secondary School Volleyball Course for teachers, organised by the Education Ministry in collaboration with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), will conclude today at the Queen’s College Volleyball Court.

Teachers from 15 Secondary Schools have been benefitting from the course delivered by Instructors Jadeshwar Doolchand of the Guyana

Volleyball Federation and Juan Velazquez of Cuba.

Speaking at one of the sessions, Lennie Shuffler, immediate past President of the GVF, said there is a need to show greater importance to skill acquisition in the area of sports development.

He said “persons are paid a lot of money for their stills, for example LeBron James of the NBA.” Shuffler further noted that

this means a foundation for skill acquisition is very important.

He further stated that sport has proven to be a catalyst for youth development around the world and this can be seen right here in Guyana. He cited the Buxton Youth Developers, which executes a sport programme that has had a great impact on youth literacy and healthy family life.

Shuffler reminded the

Physical Education teachers present that volleyball is one of the 17 disciplines included in the CSEC and CAPE Physical Education and Sport Examinations, therefore, the content being delivered will be vital to their profession.

The former GVF boss indicated that volleyball is a very attractive sport because it is non-contact, easy to play and has had relatively few doping infringements.

He posited that it is very important that Guyana increases the popularity of the sport

while keeping its integrity.

In terms of where this course fits into the development of Volleyball generally, Shuffler indicated that the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) and CSV (South American Volleyball Confederation) are supporting the development of the sport at the grassroots level.

The CSV has already approved a four-year Cool Volley Programme for primary schools, which includes the provision of skills training and equipment for 400 primary

schools across Guyana.

Shuffler closed by thanking the teachers for coming out to the training course during the regular school holidays, the course instructors, the Unit of Allied Arts and Education Ministry for the collaborative effort.

Meanwhile, the GVF is in the process of finalising arrangements to host an inter-school tournament with a view of selecting a national team for an annual Under-6 Volleyball competition in Suriname in December.

Vettori, Gayle lift Jamaica Tallawahs to 8-wicket win over Antigua Hawksbills continuing where Vettori had left off in keeping the scoring rate in check. The pressure that he helped build up led to Ben Dunk taking a single that just wasn’t there to see him run out for 12 runs off 21 balls.

With his departure the chances of the Hawksbills setting a competitive total went with him as the home side were left reeling at 42 for five.

From that point onwards, some spirited but ultimately futile resistance from the lower order saw Antigua lurch towards three figures, but ultimately they set a target of just 97 to win. If not for a cameo from fast bowler, Sheldon Cottrell, it could have been worse, as he top scored with 21 in an innings that included one of only two sixes that his team managed.

he reigning Limacol Caribbean Premier League champions, the Jamaica Tallawahs, brushed aside the Antigua Hawksbills in a comprehensive eight wicket victory at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at North Sound. Chris Gayle continued his stellar form from the opening game with a match winning 37 off 31 balls as his team cruised to victory with more than five overs to spare in a match where there was only one winner from as early as the second over.

Regular wickets prevented the Hawksbills from building

any meaningful partnerships in their innings, with the left arm spin of Nikita Miller and Daniel Vettori causing the most damage. Vettori showed all of his experience in an opening spell of three overs that saw him concede just 11 runs while picking up two wickets.

When the New Zealander returned to complete his allocation he was just as miserly, picking up another wicket to finish with figures of 3-13 off his four overs. He already seems a more than adequate replacement for Sri Lankan great, Muttiah Muralitharan.

At the half way stage the Tallawahs would have had some concerns about the variable bounce and spin being hard to get away on this pitch making the chase hard work.

As it was the Hawksbills bowlers could not exert the same control that the Jamaicans had managed.

The Tallawahs were dismissive of anything short, and the Hawksbills quicks used the bouncer far too often, most notably Miguel Cummins who was struck for three consecutive sixes by Gayle in one over, all of them pulled well in front of square.

Despite the spinners being the most successful option for the Tallawahs it was not until the eighth over that Australian veteran wrist spinner Brad Hogg was introduced into the attack by home captain Marlon Samuels. By then the visitors were more than half way to their target

with the two openers well set.

When Hogg did get a go he too was guilty of bowling that was more half tracker than a good length.

Gayle fell to a Carlos Brathwaite slower ball, but by then the game was all but won. When Jermaine Blackwood fell just two balls later there was the chance of a hiccup by the Tallawahs, but steady batting by Chadwick Walton, who top scored with 43 not out, and Adam Voges saw them home.

A comfortable win for the current holders leaves them with two wins from two and sitting on top of the nascent points table. When they face the Guyana Amazon Warriors in their next match they will be full of confidence. With the Hawksbills losing both opening fixtures they will be hoping to make home advantage count for their matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Preparation in advanced stage for BLUTC horse-race meet – entries topping 60-horse mark

ith entries topping the 60-horse mark, the principals of the Bush Lot United Turf Club (BLUTC) have already put most systems in place for the club’s horse- race meet, scheduled for this Sunday at the club’s entity Sea View Park, Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.

Organisers have put together an impressive eightrace programme with all the big names set to be on show for what is expected to be a competitive day of racing.

In an invited comment on Thursday, coordinator Lakeram Sukhdeo said that the track is in an excellent condition, adding that filling, grading and rolling to the track are almost complete in order to get it in the best of shape.

He also indicated that the renovation to the main pavilion has also been also done.

The other events on the day’s card are the ‘F’ and lower race for a winning purse of $500,000 and trophy over 1400 metres.

The individual performers including top jockey, stable and trainer will be presented with trophies and other incentives.

Race time is 12:30h and admission to the venue is $1500 for adults and $300 for children under the age of 10 years old. Each patron will receive a programme free of cost.

Metro renews sponsorship of RHTY&SC female team Mohan resigns

tationery store Metro Office and Computer Supplies on Tuesday last renewed its cricket sponsorship of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) female cricket team.

At a simple presentation ceremony at the company’s Main Street, New Amsterdam branch, Marketing Representative, Chetram Sookra, handed over a cheque valued $160,000 to the club’s Secretary/CEO, Hilbert Foster.

Foster expressed gratitude to the management and staff of the company, which has been supporting the club’s female team since its formation in 2008.

The team, which has won national and Berbice Championships over the years, has produced a total of 16 national and 30 Berbice players overall at the junior and senior levels with six of its members recently being part of the Guyana Under-19 team.

He stated that the relationship between the two organisations has been of mutual benefit to both and expressed confidence that the female cricketers would continue to be positive role models. A proud Sookra stated that under Metro’s sponsorship, Campbell was able to become the first Guyanese female cricketer to score a regional and international century and to also clinch the 2013 Senior Sportswoman Award.

ormer national basketball icon Lugard Mohan has resigned from the post of Interim Chairman of the Guyana Basketball Officials Council (GBOC).

Via a letter sent by Mohan on Wednesday, the former national player indicated that his resignation will take effect immediately while thanking the President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Nigel Hinds and all affiliated with the sport.

“I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere gratitude to you and everyone that assisted me, before and during the period I was an official of GBOC. “I have learnt a great deal, this experience has helped me to develop in my professional career and as a human kind. Three balls later, Rahane was expertly caught and bowled onehanded by Anderson, but India plundered 67 runs off 10 overs with the second new ball.

The early part of the day had been an exercise in damage limitation for the tourists as the ball swung and zipped off the pitch, making conditions desperately difficult for batting. England broke through in the third over when Shikhar Dhawan nibbled at a ball angled across him and nicked Anderson to Gary Ballance at third slip. Murali Vijay, dropped on nought by Prior, was squared up by Liam Plunkett, and saw a leading edge fly to third slip, where Ballance claimed a sharp catch.

On the stroke of lunch, offspinner Moeen drew an edge from Pujara that bounced in and out of Prior’s gloves. The miss did not prove too costly as England came out firing after the interval, pitching the ball fuller and gaining the reward. Virat Kohli edged a beauty from Anderson through to Prior on 25, Ben Stokes bowled Chesteshwar Pujara through the gate for 28 and captain Mahendra Dhoni nicked Broad behind for one.

Soon after entering to pantomime boos, Jadeja departed to one of the day’s loudest cheers, lbw to Moeen from round the wicket.

Moore satisfied with U-15s preparation – team depart this morning for Jamaica

he national under-15 cricket team ended their encampment period on Tuesday after a stint at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara.

They are preparing for the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regional tournament slated for Jamaica from July22.

Coach Julian Moore informed Guyana Times Sport on Thursday evening that emphasis was placed on physical conditioning and technique.

He also disclosed that he was satisfied with the team’s fitness level and general preparation.

Moore revealed that the players went through the fundamentals of batting, bowling and fielding in addition to the basic fitness routines during the camp.

“The batsmen worked on their shot selection, while the bowlers when through their delivery strides

and lengths. The players also did some improvised fielding drills, so overall I am happy with the preparations,” Moore said.

Moore continued: “We have a group of talented players, a group that I am confident will make Guyana proud and I know once they stick to their game plan and play to their abilities, Guyana can win the tournament easily.”

This year, the tournament – in its 19th season – will be contested under a round-robin format, featuring five rounds of 50 overs-a-side matches with the team accumulating the most points being declared champions.

Trinidad and Tobago captured the title for the seventh time last year, when it was staged in the south-western Jamaican parish of St. Elizabeth, by topping the points table following victories over The Windward Islands,The Leeward Islands, Guyana and the home team.
