he relative of Jerome Sturge, 16, of Lot 32 East Ruimveldt Front Road, Georgetown, who was fished out of the Atlantic Ocean on Friday last are still suspecting foul play in the young man’s death despite the post- mortem examination confirmed that he died from drowning.

The post-mortem performed by Dr Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as suffocation due to drowning. The two young men who were taken into police custody following the incident have been released.

Anita McIntire, a sister of the dead teen told Guyana

Times on Monday morning that she, along with other relatives, went to witness the post-mortem and was told that Sturge died from blunt trauma to head and was suffocated.

She added that the police attempted to explain that her brother may have received a hard blow to the head while he was fighting up under the water. Her family is convinced that her brother’s two friends had played a major role in his death.

McIntire also disclosed with some degree of frustration that the relatives of the two teenagers who were in custody were also present at

the post-mortem on Monday morning. “I don’t know that the police does let every and all body in the mortuary to witness a post-mortem… when we reach there, we see the people and wonder what they doing there… when we find out from the police, the police say that they cannot do anything…”

New Year's Eve murder suspect remanded

orty-year-old Jermaine Maynard appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Monday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer to the charge of murder.

Maynard was not required to enter a plea to the charge which alleged that between December 31, 2013 and January 1, he murdered Carlissa Matthews.

to him, as relatives of the deceased looked on. Attorney George Thomas who appeared on behalf of the defendant asked the court for an early date for trial. He is to return to court on February 10.

Moments shy of seeing the dawn of the new year, Matthews, a mother of one ,was shot and killed by her lover on Water Street, Stabroek, Georgetown in the vicinity of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

Matthews of Flying Fish Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown was shot once to her head by the man with whom she shared a relationship for the past two years.

The assailant, Jermaine Maynard of Cross Street, Georgetown, who fled the scene, was subsequently apprehended by police ranks from the Springlands Police Station as he was making his way to neighbouring Suriname.

With their presence, they are holding out that something “fishy” went on. She said that they intend to take the matter further, reiterating that someone knows something about her brother’s death. Nevertheless, the

frustrated sister divulged that her brother will be laid to rest on Thursday. Sturge reportedly went into the water on Thursday afternoon but was found in the Atlantic Ocean on Friday morning.

His body was discovered floating in the vicinity of the Kitty jetty with blood oozing from his mouth.

The former Carmel Secondary School student was last seen swimming in the area along with two other teenagers, who were subsequently taken into police custody. According to information received, the teenager was standing on the jetty when he was thrown into

the water by a high wave. He was not a good swimmer and quickly disappeared.

His relatives have held out that something was amiss.

He was last seen on Thursday last at home doing laundry when he was collected about 10:00h by two of his friends.

They reportedly left and went to another friend’s home before they took off for the Kitty Seawall jetty where he took the deadly plunge.

He suffered from epilepsy and may have had a seizure on the day in question.

Sturge is survived by his mother and eight siblings.

Rohee concerned about spiralling interior crimes – says ranks need to be more aggressive

ome Affairs Minister Clement Rohee said the Guyana Police Force does not need any laidback police officers in the interior areas but aggressive ones.

He expressed these sentiments while speaking at a press conference on curbing criminal activities in the interior regions. Rohee acknowledged that while the major challenge in the police force is mainly transportation, he acknowledged that there is also a shortage of manpower.

“I think we obviously need more ranks in the interior areas and the ranks there, they need to be more aggressive. We don’t need laid back ranks, I’m not saying that they are but I’m saying we don’t need that kind of ranks in the interior locations.”

Rohee pointed out that his ministry is aware of the alarming rise in criminal activities in those areas and noted that to tackle the issue; the ministry separated the E and F divisions into two units.

He noted that the police commissioner had also allocated adequate resources, both human and material, transportation for land and water, and communication equipment to make both divisions as efficient as any

other division.

Rohee said that he has not received any complaints from the commanders of the two divisions or the police commissioner.

He acknowledged that the police in the interior are facing a lot of challenges. “… but remember that is an uphill task which we are trying to grapple with, with the passing of every budget.

Right now Courtney Benn Construction is completing the floating police station base which we will launch soon and will serve the interior,” the minister stated.

Not easy

The home affairs minister went on to say that the interior is a very difficult location to work and live in. He added that while the conditions in those areas may not be as hospitable as the coastlands, the police are trained to live under difficult situations as soldiers do.

Rohee reminded that interior regions are now open up to different elements, highlighting specifically those who go there to “sponge off the wealth” of others. These are the elements we need to go after”, he stated, while adding that more work needs to be done in the area.

“I think because of the expansive nature of the geographical areas, that is what

is posing a challenge,” Rohee stressed.

The minister further pointed out that when there is a gold rush, large number of people move from one area to another, and as such, the police cannot move along with them. “So sometimes we might have a police station in an area where we don’t have anyone because they gone to the area where the gold rush is,” he mentioned.

Recently, there have been an increase in crimes in the interior and officials blame it mostly on alcohol consumption. The last killing was an attack on a Brazilian businessman, Antonio Silva, who was shot and killed after leaving his camp at Waiamu, Cuyuni/Mazaruni, two Saturdays ago.

Limited resources

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud recently told Guyana Times that the interior is a vast expansive area and there are limited resources, both human and material, available in the region. However, he noted that a lot of work is being done to address this issue.

“We have been working with the miners’ association, the wood products manufacturing associations and we have been working with individual establishments to enhance security in the interior, so it has been a work in progress for a while,” Persaud pointed out.

Close to the end of last year, police recorded a three per cent increase in murder in the interior when compared to the same time the previous year.

According to police statistics, 33 murders were recorded in the interior for the period between January and November last year.

Of these, two murders were domestic related, four were done during robberies and the rest were unknown and disorderly.

he Chinese donated mobile container scanner was on Monday commissioned during a ceremony at the National Park with traders being urged to ensure that they are well prepared for the scanning to minimise time and resources.

The US$4.3 million scanner was given by the government of China through a grant. The certificate of acceptance was signed in December. This is the third scanner the country has acquired; however, it is the first mobile one, which will be used to boost the export and import surveillance capacity while at the same time detect unauthorised items being smuggled through the ports.

During the commissioning ceremony, a demonstration of its operation was shown to the officials present. The scanner is self-operated and can scan a maximum of 20 containers in an hour. It was manufactured by Chinese company,

NUCTECH, using the latest technology in x-ray imaging.

Speaking at the launch, Finance Minister, Dr Ashni Singh that while he has no doubt the mobile scanner will be used by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to meet the trade laws, it should not be solely responsible for timely and efficient conduct of the process. On this note, the minister urged traders to play their part in ensuring that the process of scanning goes smoothly.

“I would want to say to the trading members of the private sector, that the surest way of timely processing of your transactions with the GRA is you ensuring on your own part that your declarations are full and complete and accurate if you wish to avoid queries and delays,” he said.

The equipment, Dr Singh noted, will boost revenue collection and mobilisation of GRA. “This scanner and inspection system represents an extremely impor-

tant addition to the hardware of our government and the officials of the GRA in ensuring compliance with our laws, but particularly our standard trade laws and protection of our revenue,” Singh noted.

International compliance

This acquisition, he explained, brings Guyana into compliance with international standards and requirements used by major trading partners. The finance minister added that the initiative taken by the Chinese government is one of the most recent examples of the long-standing relationship between the two countries.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Limin said this equipment will go a long way in boosting the operations of the GRA. He pointed out that this initiative by the Chinese government is part of its effort to improve the economies of developing countries and reflects their warm friend-

ship.

Meanwhile, GRA Deputy Commissioner General Clement Sealey said the acquisition of this scanner will go towards developing GRA’s capacity in dealing with goods imported and exported and also to safeguard revenue collections.

He said the scanner will allow for easy detection of unauthorised goods being traded and will greatly enhance the technological capacity of GRA. “Over the years since the establishment of the GRA, GRA has been investing in information technology because of our recognition of the importance of its operations and role as the major revenue collection authority in Guyana,” the deputy commissioner general stated.

NUCTECH’s country representative and Guyana Manufacturers’ Association Chairman Clinton Williams said the equipment will go a long way in improving the process of scanning in the trade industry.

Dr Rodney in China

G

uyana received the good news that the landmark work of Dr Walter Rodney, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, first published in 1972, will now be translated into Chinese and published in that country, via his old Working Peoples Association (WPA) colleague Eusi Kwayana. In his familiar elliptical style, Kwayana spent the greater part of his missive, comparing Dr Rodney to one of the founders and long-time head of the U.S. based National Association for the Advancement of Coloured Peoples (NAACP) Dr WEB du Bois.

All comparisons are odious to some degree, and we need not detain ourselves with whatever esoteric point Kwayana was attempting to make. The publication of Dr Rodney’s popular work emphasised the new historiographical thrust he bequeathed to the entire Third World and not just Africa. There had been others before who pointed out the insidious nature of the European connection to its colonies: that it was not just a matter of extracting wealth from the latter and enriching the former. This would just make the colonies “undeveloped”.

Even more crucial was the strategic decision to bypass the colonies as sites for adding value to the primary products they were producing. Through this manoeuvre the colonies would not be in a position to compete with the colonial power for generations, even if the colonies were to be granted “independence”.

The colonies would be “underdeveloped”; a structural condition that was not even apparent to the new rulers. Even if the “neo-colonial” relations, as explicated by Dr Kwame Nkrumah, could be severed, what was to be done about the condition of “underdevelopment”?

In the historical context in which Dr Rodney produced his work, since he was in Tanzania and saw firsthand, the “Ujamaa Socialism” which that country was deploying to counter neocolonialism, it was clear that Dr Rodney thought that the effort should be even more radical, because of the constraints of underdevelopment, extant in Africa. And for that matter, Guyana, where Forbes Burnham had launched “Cooperative Socialism” in a conscious imitation of the Tanzanian model.

We know that both Ujamaa Socialism and Cooperative Socialism failed miserably, since it was never intended to challenge the basic premises of underdevelopment. At the time Dr Rodney’s work was issued, China under Mao Zedong had also failed miserably by1961 in trying to develop under its “Great Leap Forward” and under the Cultural Revolution post 1966, into an industrialised nation. The failure lay in the inability to garner capital to overcome the structural stranglehold of underdevelopment.

China under the successor to Mao, Deng Xiaoping, decided that he would achieve the latter goal by using a capitalist regime in the economic sphere, while keeping the communist government in control of the state. His motto was, “It doesn’t matter whether the cat was white or black, if it catches mice”.

China, of course, went on to succeed beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. Dr Rodney was assassinated in 1980 and we would never know if he would have stuck dogmatically to the Marxist verities in his proposals to overcome underdevelopment.

But with his willingness to go beyond the orthodox, Marxist boundaries on so many fundamental issues such as “race and class” it would not be difficult to conceive of him accepting the “unorthodoxy” of accepting Marx’s point that countries had to go through the stage of capitalism before socialism could be introduced. As is now the case in Guyana.

China is very much engaged in Africa today, as it was in the period of decolonisation, but in a different guise. Today, it can easily be accused of being the new “colonialists” who are under-developing Africa. Maybe Dr Rodney’s seminal work may have them desist.

In the meantime, this year will be the 20th anniversary of the fast by Dr Rodney’s son Shaka to call and receive a promise for an inquiry into his father’s murder. We hope the news that the long-promised commission of inquiry is imminent is accurate.

Lactification and creolisation ‘jhanjat’ Dear Editor, Either Freddie Kissoon is the most intelligent man in all the word or assuredly he is singularly the most interesting to himself. He has a failing habit of not responding to direct questions. Instead he indulges in trivial details. For example, “Vassan Ramracha is an Indian supremacist”, and now recently has made Mahatma Gandhi a homosexual.

Kissoon believes his existence is conditional on being able to prove he is blacker than Eusi Kwayana or whomever is the flavour of the season. Let’s understand Kissoon’s mindset in his letter in a local newspaper on December 17, 2013, titled, “The imbalance in the ethnic balance advocacy”, in which he takes me on.

He mocks my rat and cockroach ghetto student housing in my quest for higher education in New York. After his free education in Canada and enjoying all the luxuries of a rich life with lavish funds and pristine housing accommodations, he puffs himself up a hero for residing in Guyana.

That is no achievement for Kissoon to boast about.

All Guyanese birds and camoudis would likewise deserve medals. With no job opportunities available in government institutions, my New York City education began without any red carpet treatment like Kissoon’s.

More difficult was working two jobs, while earning my university wings at night. What convincingly bothers him is the objective analysis comparing the employment histories of Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana in my letter of November 11, 2013, titled,

“What prevents blacks from utilising better business opportunities being provided”, by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government?

It nowhere advocated racial hatred or condoned it, or he would have been out the closet by now. It simply pointed out that black people avoid private enterprise, instead gravitating to the public service and armed forces.

Locked out of equal government opportunities, Indians continued in sun baking muddy agriculture, or alternatively, private street corner businesses.

As a matter of fact, the divergence of occupational employment both in Trinidad and Guyana was fuelled by the negritude philosophy of the pre- and post-colonial black leadership, that is, Dr Eric Williams, Frantz Fanon, Aimes Caesare, C L R James, Eusi Kwayana and Jomo Kenyatta Grant, among others, with most marrying European women.

The negritude patrimonial philosophy emboldened black legitimacy as natural successors to the departing colonials, staking primary entitlement to the state.

Not so Indians. With constant black cultural and political conditioning by education and expectations now viewing the state as their exclusive natural inheritance, as per University of the West Indies (UWI) Rex Nettleford, conflict was inevitable with others.

Indian existence, aspirations, culture and religions were deemed as divisive, interloping, illegitimate and repugnantly anathema.

They became constant targets for all black problems.

Chinese success has inevitably invited the same wrath,

with the Portuguese problem already fixed.

Kissoon has good reason to ignore the evidence as it defies his falsehoods.

Incensed with the lactification of Bollywood movies (he’s right), which saturates Indian entertainment, he is glaringly unable to likewise denounce Indian creolisation, miscegenation and looming extinction.

No comparable records exist that comparable Indian leaders taught or advocated Indianness as a political vehicle in the Caribbean or to exclude others. Kwayana advocates Guyana’s partition.

Ravi Dev advocates federalism. The negritude movement was exclusively for black people, not Indians, when creolisation obviously became public policy in the Caribbean.

Indians were therefore left “homeless and defenceless”, without any kind of agitating leadership for a compensatory political Indian alternative philosophy. Jagan’s PPP persevered in class analysis policies, while all around him negritude and black consciousness became an accelerating constant bugbear, snapping and devouring his Achilles heel, until the advent of Dr Walter Rodney who was the only preeminent black leader who steadfastly found him symbiotic.

Whether Kissoon answers the following question remains to be seen. Both the black based People’s National Movement (PNM)/ People’s National Congress (PNC) privatised state enterprises, but they did not give these to any black people or groups to own or manage.

Can Kissoon or anyone explain why? Moreover, if it is not factual that Black peo-

ple avoid private enterprise and are not in cushy 09:00h to 17:00h jobs in the public service and armed forces, then have I eclipsed Merlin the magician in conjuring up the obvious massive evidence?

Let’s put an end to all this ‘jhanjat’ (problems).

Shared government will never work. Let’s try some localised simple system of federalism. Let Region 10 (Linden) be permitted to locally raise its own revenues, its own electricity generation, tackle crime, financially bear the cost of the police payroll, and negotiate with the existing bauxite company. Let them govern themselves by either hook or PNC or Alliance For Change (AFC)! Let Lindeners and their friends, whomever, manage Linden.

Region Six (Corentyne) will also do the same, including recruiting and training its own police force to correct the armed forces racial imbalance. Since Kissoon does not speak for black people, let’s await a blacker response. Samjay?

Clearly what explains the performance of Guyana’s racial groups in their different occupations has little to do with genetic superiority or lack of skills, but its ancient mismatched leadership. Without any review and replacement of an outdated black leadership, others cannot always be found exclusively at fault during these changing times.

With all the changes in communist China and now Cuba, can even Guyanese communists adapt to the new world?

Georgetown municipality has welfare of workers as highest priority Dear Editor, The Mayor and Councillors of the City (M&CC) of Georgetown wish to thank all of its workers, who have worked tirelessly to provide vital municipal services to residents of local communities.

These workers include those from the drainage, public and environmental services, in the public health department, nurses of the material and child welfare section, daycare services, garbage collection, and disposal and city sluices. These workers perform unsung but critical jobs, which are essential to the management of the city of Georgetown.

The sluices attendants, in particular, have to toil through the nights; sanita-

tion and drainage workers ensure that the city’s water ways are kept cleared and the garbage from homes are removed and properly disposed of; daycare attendants spend time caring for our young ones, while their parents contribute to the development of the national economy by working in the public or private sector.

It is true that our personnel section sometimes find it difficult to locate and recruit suitable individuals who are willing to do some of the jobs done by the council’s workers. Yet, these workers did their best to keep the city healthy and safe. Many of these employees carried out the duties in very

harsh work conditions, in the fields and offices.

All workers know that, as a policy, the Georgetown municipality has their welfare as its highest priority.

The mayor and councillors have been calling for specific and specialised training programmes that would equip workers with the knowledge and skills to provide better services to all citizens of Georgetown.

It is the hope of the council that in 2014, all employees of the municipality will continue to advance themselves and make every effort to serve the city with pride.

Guyana’s animal crisis Dear Editor, From stray animals to vicious pets, Guyana seems to be encountering an array of problems when it comes to animals. As a concerned citizen, I strongly believe that this situation should be dealt with immediately.

A few nights ago, I encountered a group of horses on the roadway as I was driving home, but fortunately for me, even though it was extremely dark, I managed to distinguish them. The very next day, I encountered a similar ordeal.

I have heard multiple stories of the apparent successful achievements of our stray catching system, but

clearly a lot more needs to be done. The number of animals on the road still appears to be quite significant.

Moreover, we must ask ourselves if the animals that were impounded and subsequently claimed by their owners, are actually in fact the same animals that find their way back out on our roadways.

Additionally, for every animal impounded, there is a fee that the owner is expected to pay upon collecting the animal. I strongly suggest that a percentage of this money goes towards the euthanising of the smaller animals, primarily the sick and mangy ones.

My last concern is that

of people who take the chance and risk of breeding dangerous dogs. Recently, we have had several incidents where pit bulls attacked their owners and severe measures had to be taken to end the vicious attacks.

I opine that individuals who choose to rear pit bulls should have some form of licence ratifying that they have the knowledge and the ability to harbour such an animal. Additionally, they must have the required facilities to house these animals and further prevent them from escaping or attacking the general public.

Constrictors are most dangerous Speeding should not be difficult to keep as pets to deal with

Dear Editor, Too many accidents are taking place too frequently and it irks me when I read that the major cause for almost all of the recent accidents was speeding. This factor has for quite some time been the leading cause of most accidents and I find myself wondering when and if this matter will ever really be addressed.

Additionally, it stands to reason that something is amiss when it comes to our roads and its ability to accommodate the many lanes needed for our rapidly rising vehicular output here in Guyana. It therefore means that even if more speed limits are implemented along particular zones, at least some measure will be taken to curb speeding.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) clearly stated that “speeding continues to be the major contributing factor to fatal accidents and was in fact the cause of 65 of the 92 fatal accidents recorded from January to November 2013”.

The statistics are appalling and what is even more frustrating is that in many cases, it is due to human er-

ror. I strongly believe that a survey should be conducted with those who have survived accidents in order to gather information such as age, driving experience, and reason for being on the road at the said time. The findings from this survey can then help us to determine the reason why people speed.

I have this feeling that speeding is attributable to a quest for money, as many of the vehicles which speed comprise of minibuses and taxis. The average professional driver would undertake his driving with patience and at a very comfortable speed.

Minibuses and taxi drivers have been known for breaching several traffic regulations inclusive of overtaking on double lines and on turns, jumping traffic lights, under-taking; and occupying a left turn lane all because of the desire to rush to pick up passengers.

Statistics from the police Traffic Department clearly support my statement.

During the period January to November 2013, police managed to encounter a total of 107,650 cases of errant

motorists, of which approximately 20,443 were cases of speeding.

The issue of speeding has been spoken of for quite some time now, however, very little is being done to curb it, particularly on our major roads. The use of signs and speed bumps should ideally be implemented in areas where there is frequent movement of pedestrians, particularly where there are schools.

Moreover, it has become a tendency for minibuses to speed along their main routes and the drivers seem to be least bothered by their recklessness and their ability to jeopardise the lives of their passengers.

Personally, I believe that traffic officers should always have their radar guns with them. Also, since speeding has become such a significant reason for accidents and road fatalities, I strongly opine that the fines for these offences be significant.

Speeding kills and it is therefore crucial for us to take all measures to prevent it.

Those who abuse women need help Dear Editor, Many people have repeatedly called for a serious and detailed profiling of women beaters and potential killers. This kind of knowledge may very well predict the ultimate actions of some men who are in unstable love relationships.

Recently in Tuschen, a 37-year-old woman was allegedly killed by the man with whom she was said to

be in a relationship with.

The accused is said to be a fisherman who was known by many for his erratic behaviour. His character comprised of using obscene words and overall aggression. Many believe that he may have also been a controlling person.

I am no specialist, but there are basic traits and commonalities that can help us to identify and distin-

guish men who may be potential abusers and killers.

These men need help.

They need guidance and counselling in order for them to develop a new mind set.

We must take preventative measures in order to prevent the inevitable tragedy of women losing their lives at the hands of their lovers.

Dear Editor, Ever since I read of the man who keeps a pet anaconda at his home in Industry, East Coast Demerara, I have not been able to be rid of my sense of worry.

Anacondas are known to be large snakes which can grow to more than 20 feet long and weigh an easy 500 pounds. It is quite a frightening thought to know that there is such a dangerous snake in such close proximity to people.

Anacondas have been known for easily and effortlessly being able to kill and eat large animals inclu-

sive of bulls, elephants, tigers, cows, crocodiles and of course man. Yet this individual in Industry insists on calmly housing one in his backyard.

Constrictors inclusive of anacondas and pythons are known for coiling themselves around their prey and holding them in a deadly squeeze.

Many victims of these snakes are often killed by cardiac arrest, asphyxiation and even spinal fracture. These are not animals we want to keep as pets unless we are trained individuals who have the

requisite knowledge of handling them.

There have been several cases worldwide where pet snakes have managed to escape and kill people, inclusive of their owners.

I call upon the relevant authorities to make routine checks on people who are nurturing such dangerous pets in their homes or in their yards. They must be adhering to some kind of guideline that includes most importantly, proper and secure accommodation.

How to make homework fun for children

Things NEW TEACHERS should do for the first week of school

or a new teacher, that first day and week of school is the source of anxiety and excitement. While most have had experience teaching in a controlled environment, typically with their supervising teacher present at all times, from this point on they will be flying solo.

There is much for a new teacher to consider and prepare before that first day. The following strategies are designed to help prepare new teachers calm their nerves and succeed from day one.

Know the school’s policies

Each school will have policies and procedures that you will need to learn.

Read through any official handbooks that are given to you. Pay close attention to things like attendance policies and discipline plans.

Also, make sure to know how to go about requesting a day off in case of illness.

In fact, you should be prepared to be sick a lot during your first year. You will be faced with many new germs and most new teachers will use all of their sick days. Work now to begin building your immune system.

You should also ask your co-workers and assigned mentor about procedures that might not be clearly written. For example, it’s important to know

how the administration expects you to handle sending students who are disruptive out of class.

Familiarise yourself with the school

Learn the layout of the school. Find where the closest student restroom is to your room. Locate the library and the student cafeteria. Learning these will help you feel more comfortable and help if new students have questions for you.

Meet your co-workers

It is essential that you meet and begin to make friends with your co-workers, especially those who teach right around you.

They will be who you turn to first with questions and concerns. It is also important that you meet and begin to build relationships with key people around the school such as the person in charge of the media centre, your janitor, etc.

Get your room organised

You will probably have a week or less to set up your classroom for that first day. You should make sure to arrange classroom desks the way you want them for the school year. If you are not sharing a room, take some time to add decorations to boring notice boards and possibly hang posters about topics you will be covering during the

year.

Have all materials ready for the first day

One of the first things you should learn is the procedure for making photocopies.

Some schools require you to turn in requests well in advance, and the office staff will make the copies for you. Other schools allow you to make copies yourself.

In either case, you will need to plan ahead of time which copies that you need and get them made. Do not put this off until the last minute because chances are that if you do, you will not be able to get them made in time.

Get there early

Arrive at school early that first day. Go to your room and have some quiet time before the students start to invade. Make sure your materials are ready to go and organised so that you don’t have to search for anything when the class bell rings that first time.

Create detailed lesson plans for the first week

In order to be well prepared, you should overplan.

Make detailed lesson plans including directions for yourself on what to do throughout each class period. Read them and know them. Definitely do not try to “wing it” that first week.

Greet each student and begin to learn their names

Stand at the door, smile, and warmly greet students as they enter your class for the first time. Try and learn the names of a few students. Then when you are in class and begin teaching, use the names you have learned to call on a few students. One note: do not point out your newness. Don’t state that this is your first time teaching. Remember, student teaching counts.

Go over rules and procedures with your students

Make sure you have posted the classroom rules and discipline plan for all students to see. Go over each rule and what steps you will take if these rules are broken. Do not assume that students will read these on their own. Continually reinforce the rules from day one as part of effective classroom management.

Start student learning on the first day

Make sure that you teach something on that first day of school. Do not spend the entire period on housekeeping tasks. After you take attendance and go through the classroom syllabus and rules, jump right in. Don’t make it too intensive, but make sure that students know that your classroom is going to be a place of learning from day one. (About.com)

If your child needs your assistance to handle his homework, set up a space where you can be available to him while completing your own nightly chores (that is, doing dinner dishes, packing school lunches, etc).

Kaieteur News’ article published in its January 6 edition about inundation at Liverpool, Region Six, tells a totally different picture of the reality on the ground, Region Six Chairman David Armogan said.

The article, with accompanying pictures, shows parts of the Region Six community under heavy water.

The article reports that this was due to that community’s pump being non-functional, and the sluice having the capacity to function only in periods of low tide.

However, Armogan in a telephone interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported that he and a team, inclusive of a Stabroek News reporter, Monday morning completed a visit to the area to get a first-hand look at the situation, and found a different picture altogether.

“We have seen no water in any of the residential land.

There is some amount of water in the savannah area, but that is normal in a rainfall season,” he said.

The team also spoke to some of the persons referred to in the Kaieteur News article including retired Headmaster O’Neil Leitch. “We went to visit his (Leitch) place and he is living

on the edge of the savannah in a very low lying swampy area, but as of this morning the water had receded from his yard,” the regional chairman stated.

None of the residents, including Leitch, were able to point out to the team the location where the photograph of the inundation in the article was taken. The regional chairman said that it was obvious that the reporter had gone to some area outside of Liverpool and taken the photographs.

“This is a mischievous piece of journalism designed to make government and the region look bad, and this is the kind of disgusting news that seems to be emanating from the Kaieteur News from time to time, where halftruths and lies are pushed to the reading public. This is totally unacceptable and I call on the editor of Kaieteur News to ensure his journalist in Berbice carry a true picture of what is the existing situation,” Armogan said.

With regard to the sluice and pump, Armogan explained that it was working, but was down for a few days to facilitate repairs. He said during the dry season, there is no need to operate the pump, as well as the sluice,

but after the rains, the region immediately activated the sluice, so there was some amount of relief to the residents after the Boxing Day rainfall.

He said that the region started a few days ago to use the pump to assist when the sluice was closed, but after a few hours of work, it was realised that the engine would record a high temperature.

“We did rest the engine and operate it for another few hours after it cooled off, but we were advised by a mechanic if we continued to do that, it could cause permanent damage to the engine,” Armogan said.

He explained that upon inspection, it was found that the engine’s radiator was rusty and needed to be cleaned. That was done and it is now operable.

“Even though the pump was working on and off, we ensured the sluice door was opened during low tide to ensure maximum gravity drainage and that is why no water was on the land when we visited since the sluice was operable at all time,” he pointed out.

With the intensity of the water on Boxing Day, he said there was no-way that the region could have gotten it off the land before two to three days.

The rainfall was about six inches, and the drainage system in the region only has the capacity to take off two to two-and-a-half inches of water in a 24-hour period.

The regional chairman said that during the visit, the team did notice some areas in the community where drainage was clogged with bushes and will moving a mini-excavator to the area to assist with the clearance.

Currently, there are six excavators working in the region in other areas, assisting in preventing flooding, and one will be deployed to Liverpool to clear the vegetation.

hree days after the body of an unknown man was discovered at Liliendaal, Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD) with a gunshot wound to the head, he was on Monday identified as Rafael Campbell, 30, of Lot 33 Simpson Street, Beterverwagting, ECD. Campbell was discovered in a clump of bushes with a single gunshot wound to his face and other marks of violence about his body. Police sources confirmed that five young men have been arrested and are at the Sparendaam Police Station assisting with investigations.

Conversation

The woman added that upon leaving, she reminded him that he had to keep the children the following day for her to go to work and he concurred. “After he didn’t show up the next morning to collect the children, we stated to call his phone but all the calls went to voice note… I thought that he was with his other woman that he lived with… I called and called but got no answer.”

The woman stated that his eight-year-old daughter also tried to contact her father but it was the same thing. “She, she tried but the phone was off… she insisted that we go search for her father…. We con-

tacted his girl but she also said that he did not return home… we called his mother at Parfaite Harmonie but they also claimed that they did not hear from him.”

After two days elapsed, they started to search for the man but did not find him. Cadogan said that on Sunday, she was about to go to the police station to lodge a missing person’s report and at the same time the police came to her house informing her that they suspected the body that was found at Liliendaal might be that of her children’s father.

Worst fears confirmed

They were advised to reach the Lyken’s Funeral Home at 07:00h on Monday morning to identify the body. “When we meet there, and they opened him up we realised that it was him… his face was damaged… it was like a bullet hole went into one side cheek and passed through the other…

The woman added that upon inquiring, they learnt that the man’s car was found on the Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

She confirmed that the man only returned from Port Kaituma to spend the holi-

days with his family. “He does the same work in that area,” she opined. Campbell said that she was not aware that he had any enemies and is of the opinion that he was hijacked, robbed, killed and his body thrown out of his car.

A neighbour, who claimed to be the dead man’s half sister, told this publication that indeed they saw the news about the man who was found at Liliendaal but did not think it was Campbell. Family and friends thought that he might have gone to his mother’s house and did not get too worried. Attempts to contact him proved futile, resulting in them making contact with his mother.

They panicked and started to search over the weekend until they were given the devastating news by the police. The woman said she last saw Campbell late Thursday. She also confirmed that he recently returned from the interior. A post-mortem examination performed on the body of the man gave the cause of death as gunshot injuries to the head. The police are continuing their investigations.

he Region Five administration is expected to place heavy focus on executing major repairs to several roads in 2014. Region Five Chairman Bindrabhan Bisnauth said several roads in residential and farming communities are in a deplorable state and will be urgently repaired.

Bisnauth told Guyana Times that the deplorable roads has been a major issue affecting residents. He said money has been set aside in the region’s 2014 budget to commence work on the roads which would have speed humps to keep reckless motorists in check.

The chairman said his office is also looking to purchase a new generator for the Forth Wellington Hospital and will carry out a few repairs to the hospital.

The region is working to ensure that all public facilities are maintained and kept to the highest standard. These works are expected to improve the general standard of living in the region.

Minibus driver charged for fatal accident at Number 53 Village

atrick Ram, 20, of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, Berbice was on Monday charged for the death of Andrea Phillips, 43, of Lot 448, Number 77 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, who was struck down moments after disembarking a minibus driven by the defendant.

He made his first court appearance at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranath Singh, who granted him bail in the sum of $300,000.

Ram was charged for causing death by dangerous driving. His passport was also lodged at the Whim Magistrate’s Court and was warned, if he is found driving, he will be sent to prison for a year.

Phillips was on Saturday evening struck down by a reversing minibus on the Number 53 Village Public Road moments after he had disembarked it. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries about 18:30h while receiving medical attention at the Springlands Hospital.

Based on reports gathered, Phillips was a passenger of minibus BKK 6944 driven by Ram and had asked to be dropped off at a location along the Number 53 Village Public Road.

As he disembarked, the conductor instructed the driver to reverse to collect other passengers who were standing on the road.

Phillips was reportedly backing the minibus when he was stuck down and crushed.

He suffered severe inju-

ries and was placed in the said minibus and rushed to a medical facility where he was admitted and treated.

Guyana Times understands from a source connected with the investigations that Ram’s licence could be a bogus one, since the law stipulates that a person must be 21 years and over to obtain a minibus driver’s licence.

Meanwhile, an eyewitness said that the driver reportedly kicked into reverse gear and with some speed went to collect the passenger, but in the process hit Phillips and ran over him. The driver reportedly stopped and drove forward, running over the man a second time. Phillips is survived by his wife, three children, five siblings and three grandchildren.

Four before the courts for possession of narcotics for trafficking

wenty-three-yearold Carl Lashley and 21-year-old Christina Camacho on Monday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry jointly charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

The defendants plead-

ed not guilty to the charge which alleged that on January 4, at 16 James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown police ranks found leaves, seeds and stems of what they suspected, and later confirmed to be, cannabis weighing 93 grams in the possession of the above mentioned defendants. They were told of

the offence and taken into custody.

Both defendants were represented by attorney Gordon Gilhuys. After the facts of the case were presented in court, the defendants were denied bail and were remanded to prison.

They are to make another appearance in court on January 17 for trial.

Meanwhile, two other persons were also charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Alair Hendricks and Alicia Gilkes both pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on January 4, they had 109 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the court that CANU ranks acting upon information searched the residence of Hendricks and Gilkes at PE6 Bent Street, Work-en-Rust, Georgetown where the drugs were found in the kitchen. The drugs were said to be in 86 Ziploc bags. Mangru further said that Hendricks had made an oral confession for ownership of the drugs.

Gilkes was placed on $200,000 bail while Hendricks was remanded.

Both defendants are to reappear in court on January 30.

$500,000 bail for 1044 kilograms of cocaine

herlock Reid aka Blacka was on Monday placed on $500,000 bail after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates' Courts charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of tracking.

The man was charged after 1044 kilograms of cocaine was confiscated in a shipment to Antigua. The cocaine was reportedly stashed in a bible case.

The man who was represented by attorney George Thomas is to make another court appearance on January 29.

“C

...in “democratisation” onfuffled” is one of those new words that’s cropped up in a fast changing world. It’s a conflation of “confused” and “baffled” – and pretty much means that a person’s so out of it, he’s reduced to making blathering sounds. And a good thing’s the word was invented. How else would we be able to describe Dr Henry Jeffrey after reading his latest effusion in the Stabber News?

That he’s joined the Conga line (behind David Granger, Khemraj Ramjattan, Lincoln Lewis and Patrick Yarde, among others) to support the U.S.’s insistence to “democratise” us through the Leadership and Democracy (LEAD) project – even if it kills us trying – isn’t the blathering we’re referring to.

Self-interest dictates that he takes this line. More like “survival”, since the job prospects of a man who’d moved from housing to labour to health to education and finally fired from foreign trade in 2008, isn’t exactly stellar.

Even though the U.S. maintains stoutly that the International Republican Institute (IRI) – the fellas who brought us a coup against Hugo Chávez in Venezuela in 2001 and one in Honduras in 2009 – was only going to help us with local government elections in their “democratisation” programme, Dr Jeffrey now informs us that the IRI was really going to eliminate “race based” voting.

We’re not sure how this would’ve been done since the more “local” you go, the more “race based” you get. So? Some Indian fella’s going to get elected to the BuxtonFriendship village office post, IRI? And imagine we still haven’t reached Dr Jeffrey’s real confuffle...

This beauty arrives with Dr Jeffrey’s grand conclusion that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) rejected the IRI’s LEAD project because it wasn’t in that party’s interest for the electorate to move away from race-based politics – “now that it is in a minority, any real movement from it can cause major problems.” (!!!!)

Can you believe this? The man declares that the PPP/ C’s “racial” base is now a “minority” and yet announces that the PPP/C wants to continue with “race”? Did this guy even have to add 2+2 to get his Ph D? Why would the PPP/C not want to cross racial vote to gain a majority? Or is “less” now “more” in the world of Dr Jeffrey’s politics?

Told you the fella was “confuffled”! But maybe there is a method to Dr Jeffrey’s madness. The out-of-work Ph D suggested that the U.S. might still funnel the US$300 million through non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for the “democratisation”. Dr Jeffrey remembers how the “democratisation” was achieved in the 1960s. And guess who’s been busy getting his “non-racial” credential burnished?

How’d you ever guess? ...Parliament Granger’s another fella who appears confuffled. Here he was...declaring to all and sundry that he’s one with the “working class”. (Well, maybe he was being too expansive with the term, since he was referring to the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU), the members of which haven’t the slightest acquaintance with “work”, much less “class”.

But he did sing “solidarity” with the public servants.

And as recently as his New Year’s message.

So what’s going on when he can now blithely announce he won’t be introducing legislation in Parliament to have the government give the public servants a higher raise?

What was the point with all the huffing and puffing and baring of his “long, long” teeth? Seems Granger now feels even if he were to introduce the bill...the government wouldn’t go along. And there’s nothing he can do about it.

Well! Well! Well! What’s the cause of this backflip?

Next thing you know, Granger might accept that he had no authority to slash the budget – as the acting Chief Justice Ian Chan has been saying all along.

Decomposed body of Barbados to cut jobs to revive ailing economy missing woman found T

fter being missing for approximately 13 days, the decomposed body of Judith Dolivera from Dredge Creek, Lower Pomeroon River was discovered nude with marks of violence.

Her decomposed body was discovered around 11:00h on Monday by a family member Eon Dolivera in a clump of bushes at Dredge Creek, Lower Pomeroon.

Her reputed husband Leroy Benn, called “Satan”, has been held by police for the suspected murder. He is currently at the Charity Police Station assisting with investigations.

Judith’s sister Jennifer Dyal said her sibling went missing since Boxing Day and the search for her was launched since then.

Dyal related that her, who sister was living in an abusive relationship, had complained to family members on several occasions.

brother-in-law had told her that he was “fed up” with her sister and since then, she had not heard from both of them.

The sister said prior to Judith’s disappearance, she was taken to the Charity Hospital by her (Judith) husband after complaining of severe tommy aches.

was later discharged. Dyal related that she was worried about her sister’s disappearance and made several reports to Charity Police Station but ranks there paid her no heed.

The woman’s body was discovered by her nephew, who said the search team was going to give up their search when they noticed a flock of carrion crows flying around an area. He said the search team decided to search the area and there they discovered the mother of four.

“The stench was high, she was naked as she born, a knife mark suspected to be that of a stab wound was at the side of her left breast, her feet was left sprawl,” Doliveria related.

The nephew said he came out from the river and summoned the police to the scene and family members swarmed the Charity Police Station to provide information to the investigators.

The body of the woman is at the Suddie mortuary.

Drama festival winners to receive payment after delays

ne month after the winners of the National Drama Festival were announced, there are reports that they have not received the full sums due as prize monies.

National Drama Festival Director Godfrey Naughton told Guyana Times that several winners of the 2013 festival were calling and asking him for their prize money.

He said he told them that he did not have the money and they should contact the Culture Ministry.

Culture Ministry Permanent Secretary Alfred King, when contacted, said that there were some discrepancies in the submission of the budget on the part of Naughton. King further explained that those issues have been worked out and the winners will receive their money as soon as possible.

The curtains were drawn on the 2013 festival in December after a series of short and full-length plays were staged, with “Watch De Ride 2 – Justice” capturing nine of the 10 awards.

Culture, Youth and Sport Minister, Dr Frank Anthony highlighted at the event that drama is used to address social and economical issues through the vehicles of plays, poetry, songs and dances. The festival is not only a competition, it is meant to reward the best performers, while providing them with training, so that they can elevate themselves.

The ministry has been working very closely with the National School of Drama to promote training, and as part of this initiative, a course called “The introduction to the elements of stage craft for drama instructors” was offered. The course was taken by all the students of the drama school, and some practitioners and teachers.

Forty of the students passed the exam, 23 of whom attained distinctions.

he Barbados government Monday urged citizens to “band together” as it seeks to implement a raft of policies, including job cuts and a reduction in expenditure in a bid to revive an ailing economy.

Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Chris Sinckler told a news conference that the adjustment process was never ever going to be easy and the Freundel Stuart government does not pretend that it was going to be a “painless process”.

But he promised Barbadians that “if we believe, we can turn the situation around – we will”, urging them to “work harder, smarter and together” in reviving the economy.

“Your government is committed to succeeding and turning around this economy, we will not be distracted. Let us band together as a strong and resilient people, working together to make our country better, taking the tough decisions that we have to but implementing the decisions that we know will bring years of lasting growth and development.”

Strict programme of attrition

Late last month, Sinckler announced the plan by the Freundel Stuart government to cut public service jobs in a bid to save Bds$143 million (one Bds dollar = US$0.50 cents). He said government would also institute a “strict programme of attrition” across the central public service, filling posts only where it is absolutely unavoidable, over the next five years, ending 20182019.

“This attrition is expected to reduce central government employment levels from approximately 16,970 to 14,612 jobs – a projected loss of 2358 posts; and savings of BDS$121 million.

Over the current 19-month adjustment period, public sector employment will be reduced by an additional 501 jobs with a projected savings of Bds$26 million,” said Sinckler.

The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), which represents the majority of the 28,000 public servants, has accused the government of already retrenching workers through technical manoeuvres. The government said it intends to trim the service by 3000 jobs starting from January 15. Sinckler told reporters that the government had already undertaken a number of measures to increase revenue “and we are of the view that more taxation will not be part of the solution at this point in time”.

Inescapable loss

“The analysis that we have undertaken makes it clear that government expenditure needs to be reduced by a further Bds$143 million at the minimum over the full financial year and meeting this target would mean an inevitable, unfortunate though it may be, an inescapable loss of jobs in the

public sector”.

Meanwhile, the Barbados Labour Party’s parliamentary group is willing to take a 10 per cent pay cut but only if government stops its “partisan” projects, so said Opposition Leader Mia Mottley when she spoke at a news conference at her office in Parliament.

Pointing out that the parliamentary group had met on Friday and had discussed the matter, Mottley said: “Our pay cut for 14 members is miniscule in comparison to the $4.5 million that is being spent for catering for summer camps.

The government must stop that and it must stop the $5 million in constituency councils and the David Thompson football tournament and if we can get those things then the opposition, like anybody else, is going to bear its share of the burden,” she said.

In reference to the proposed lay-off of more than 3000 public workers next year, Mottley said that suggestion and the proposed pay cut by all public servants would not bring safety nor stability to the country.

Hope canal to become operational in April H aving missed its December 31st date of completion for the Hope canal project, the Agriculture Ministry is giving all assurances that the canal would become operational no later than April this year.

Agriculture Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy told Guyana Times on Monday that the remaining work is critical to the operationalisation of the Hope canal. The minister said the main area of concern is the external sluice, which is only 55 per cent complete.

Courtney Benn Contracting Services is responsible for the construction of the sluice. According to the minister, after meetings with the engineering company, it was agreed that the work will be done in six phases that will bring the sluice to more than 90 per cent completion. This will then allow the ministry to move ahead with operationalising the project, after years of on-and-off work on the northern relief channel.

“So we are long from completion of that structure, but that shouldn’t mean that people should think we need another two years,” Minister Ramsammy added. He stated that most of the work is near completion, explaining that the progress is being made on all four components of the canal project. The canal itself is 95 per cent completed, and the work remain-

ing is excavation work on completion of the sluice and the head regulator. The shaping of the dam along the entire length of the canal is about 75 per cent completed.

Engineering feat

This shaping and reshaping of the dam is to be a continuous process that will be conducted over the next 12 to 24 months. “I would consider that three of four components of the northern relief channel are eventually completed. There is still some work to be done, but this is dependent on other factors.” Dr Ramsammy said that considering that the project is the first of its kind in Guyana, it

will be a major engineering feat by Guyanese engineers and workers.

The minister had said that if the contractors failed to meet the December 31 deadline, the government would issue liquated damages against them. This will take effect soon, but will in no way affect the continuation of the project.

Dr Ramsammy said, “I believe given where we are with three of the components, if that’s necessary it will be minor. The bridge is completed, the head regulator is almost at completion point, and if we impose any [damages] …it will be a major liquidated damage arrangement.”

The $3.6 billion East Demerara water conservancy northern relief channel remains a contentious issue and has received much criticism.

Several millions have already been expended on the project, which started with former Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud and have suffered several delays. The opposition said that while the project is good for the development of the country’s drainage and irrigation system, the government has been reluctant to ensure that contractors stick with the stipulated deadlines given to them, which has cost the country millions, even while there is no real assurances that the canal would be finally completed and function.

Two held for murder of Mahaicony cash crop farmer

wo men have been arrested and questioned for the murder of cash crop farmer Dearoop Sieuchand, 72, of Lot 8 Zeeland, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara who was killed

on Sunday morning during a robbery at his home.

The two men are at the Mahaicony Police Station and are being grilled, but have not confessed to the murder. As the police continue their investiga-

ries that required several stitches. When Guyana Times visited the woman on Monday, she was clearly under the impression that her husband had received injuries, was treated and sent home. Relatives there were careful how they spoke to her since any news of her husband’s death might result in her condition worsening.

In a soft voice, the widow explained that she was in the upper flat of the house when three men invaded the home, asking for money and jewellery. She said her

husband fought with one of them while she was pulled down the stairs by the others. The bandits, she added, were wearing metal rings which they used to assault her.

Sitting on her hospital bed, the woman disclosed that she managed to see their faces as they were hitting her, but after receiving several punches to the face and body, she “went blank”.

Her husband’s young nephew, she explained, stays with them but she was not sure if anything had happened to him.

From reports received,

the lad reportedly hid from the bandits and after the ordeal, he contacted his relatives.

The body of Dearoop Sieuchand was found in his house with at least 17 stab wounds, around 06:45h on Sunday.

The man’s wife had been taken to the Mahaicony Hospital, but was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she was admitted.

According to information received, the couple’s house was ransacked but relatives on Monday could not say if anything was missing since they did not have the time to check. Sieuchand and his wife, along with his nephew, lived in the third house on the plot of land while the first and second are occupied by other relatives.

The perpetrators reportedly used a ladder to gain entry into the home through a window on the upper flat of the house.

Meanwhile, a postmortem examination was performed on the body of the farmer and the cause of death was given as multiple incised wounds compounded by blunt force trauma to the head.

PPP/C urges govt to move on Rodney inquiry

T

he ruling People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) is urging the government to move with alacrity to establish the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the assassination of Dr Walter Rodney.

At the party’s news conference on Monday, the PPP/C said it hopes that 2014 will bring forth the establishment of the commission to inquire into the facts and circumstances surrounding the death of Dr Rodney, which occurred on June 13, 1980 at Georgetown.

“The mystery, suspicion and controversy which surround the death of Dr Rodney have left an indelible stain on our political landscape and indeed on the image of the nation state of Guyana.

Calls for such an inquiry have come from throughout the Caribbean, the U.S., the continent of Africa and indeed, from intellectuals, Pan Africanists, and defenders of freedom and democracy everywhere,” the PPP/C said.

According to the party, in his short but illustrious life, Dr Rodney’s intellectual prowess, political discourses and activism have captured the imagination, admiration and aspirations of people the world over.

“His philosophical and physical groundings with the working class and working people, along with his natural inclination to resist and reject oppression, authoritarianism and political dictatorship, made him a natural ally of Dr Cheddi Jagan and the PPP when he returned to Guyana in the mid-seventies and indeed until he died.

"Together, we waged many wars and launched great struggles against

the dictatorship of Forbes Burnham, the repression of freedom, the physical violence unleashed on political leaders, political activists, trade unionists, and journalists and religious leaders and many other issues of the day.”

Long overdue

The party said an inquiry into his death is indeed long overdue.

“In fact, since the 22nd of June, 2005, a motion was unanimously moved and passed in our National Assembly, calling for such an inquiry.”

The said motion, ex facie, recognises that “on the 13th June, 1980, Dr Walter Rodney, a distinguished Guyanese scholar, was assassinated by explosion which occurred in his car at John and Hadfield streets, Georgetown… Dr Rodney was at the time of his death, an eminent political leader engaged in a struggle against authoritarian rule for democracy and social justice….There have been calls for a full investigation

into the assassination of Dr Walter Rodney, which have received broad support”.

The National Assembly had unanimously resolved “that in paying tribute to the memory of this illustrious son of Guyana and on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his untimely and tragic death, supports an enquiry being conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr Rodney”.

“We urge the government to move expeditiously to establish this commission. We urge every Guyanese to support this commission. We urge all persons, NGOs, political parties who may have information or evidence which may be relevant or likely to be of assistance to the commission, to please bring same forth.

“We are of the view that this commission will put to rest many important questions which have been left unanswered for too long.

"We believe that these answers will heal many historical wounds; will close many doors of political suspicions; and will be part of a healing process which is so necessary, if we are to find political consensus, as we work towards building a Guyana which is peaceful, prosperous and progressive and one in which every Guyanese feels that he or she has an equal opportunity to realise his or her potential.”

Chastised

Back in December, government was chastised during a sitting of the National Assembly after it failed to answer pertinent questions relating to the inquiry.

Hinds on the issue, he was unprepared and did not have any information at hand to answer the questioned posed

by Granger.

However, junior Finance Minister Juan Edghill, in backing up the prime minister, said a secretariat has been established, consisting of six full-time staff, and the president and other stakeholders are looking to shortlist persons for the posts of commissioners for the inquiry.

APNU shadow finance minister Carl Greenidge also questioned the government side of the House as to the details of the spending. At that point, Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman also interjected and said that a CoI of that nature should require greater details and a proper account of how monies are spent.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall, at this point, interjected and said that the secretariat for the CoI is located in the same building where the Linden CoI was done; that is, the Supreme Court of Judicature.

In addition to that, it was noted that the terms of reference for the inquiry was agreed on by the president, stakeholders and relatives of the later Dr Walter Rodney.

President Donald Ramotar had announced earlier this year in New York that preparations have begun for the CoI into Dr Rodney’s assassination. On June 13, 1980, Dr Rodney at the age of 38 was killed by a bomb in his car, a month after returning from the independence celebrations in Zimbabwe and during a period of intense political activism.

Three vehicles collide on Camp Street

ust about midday on Monday, three vehicles collided at the intersection of Camp and Quamina streets, Georgetown, causing major damage to at least two vehicles and leaving the drivers fretting.

According to an eyewitness, one of the vehicles PGG 45 was proceeding along the western half of Quamina Street when it collided with another PLL 2907.

Adrian Baccchus, who was driving the third vehicle HB 8992, said PGG 45 spun about three times before hitting the front of his car which had stopped on the eastern half of Quamina Street at the Camp Street intersection.

The drivers of the other two vehicles had declined to give any statements regarding the accident, while the driver of PGG 45 appeared traumatised.

Major works planned for crumbling Mahaica sea defence

ven as workers try to shore up the crumbling Mosquito Hall/ Lancaster sea defence, the Public Works Ministry said that major reconstruction works have been scheduled for the area under its 2014 capital programme.

The ministry’s statement came on the same day A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Joe Harmon led a team of officials to the area and also engaged disgruntled residents.

The ministry said designs are currently being finalised for projects involving the reconstruction of river defences in the area which will be advertised for public tendering during January 2014.

Besides, the ministry said two major contracts involving the rehabilitation of concrete river defences at Mosquito Hall/Lancaster were executed during the period 2011 to 2012.

These works addressed problematic sections of sea defences which were undermined and frequently overtopped during spring tides.

In addition to concrete works, a total of 700 metres

of eroded earthen embankment was rehabilitated and adjacent façade drains constructed for the storage and conveyance of overtopping discharge in order to reinforce the flood defence system.

During December 2013, a contract requiring the rehabilitation of a section of the earthen embankment and slope protection works in undermined areas was awarded to a private contractor.

These works commenced during December 2013 and are scheduled for completion at the end of January 2014.

In addition to the ongoing contracted works, the ministry’s Force Account Unit will be engaged in the execution of maintenance works in the area.

According to the ministry, the Mahaica area was recently included in a list of vulnerable coastal/ riverine communities specifically mentioned in its monthly spring tide advisory published in the local print media.

There were no reports of flooding at the Mosquito Hall/Lancaster area during the recent spring tides period.

he Guyana Foundation said it will be launching a two-phase mental health programme here to raise awareness about the issue which it says is reaching crisis level.

“There is no dispute that the mental health sector in Guyana is in crisis. There is a severe shortage of qualified professionals, resulting in a system that cannot meet the needs of those who require some form of psychiatric intervention or men-

tal health counselling,” the foundation said in a release.

As a result, countless individuals have suffered some type of mental health problem in silence, and alone, while others – many in the prime of their lives – have given up hope and committed suicide. “It is time to act,” the foundation said.

It added that through the generous donation of Joe Moore, a donor from the UK, the foundation will be launching a two-phase national mental health pro-

gramme aimed at raising awareness through the media; educating through seminars in different parts of the country led by local and international professionals; providing mental health outreaches to those communities most in need; and to support local organisations serving individuals with mental health concerns.

“Guyana Foundation stands willing to use its international network to fundraise with the ultimate goal of improving existing treatment centres and creating new ones to effectively bring the problem under control.

While this is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, we at the Guyana Foundation will continue to do as much as we can on our own with the hope that the relevant authorities will recognise our efforts and that the nation can begin to work together as a team to stop the senseless loss of life that we have been watching pass before our eyes.”

Noting that everyone has a responsibility to be involved, the foundation said poverty is causing severe mental health breakdowns.

“If you are a neighbour, a brother, a sister, a friend, a stranger with a good heart, you have the responsibility to reach out to assist those who are on the brink of a mental breakdown. Let’s work together on this.”

Iwokrama has announced that it was about to embark on the second phase in the development of its model sustainable timber operation

he Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development announced on Monday that it was about to embark on the second phase in the development of its model sustainable timber operation in the Iwokrama forest.

A private sector partner will conduct the sawmilling operations while the centre will maintain control of harvesting operations.

According to a statement from the centre, in accordance with Section Nine of the Iwokrama Act (1996), a complex and extensive zoning exercise was conducted on the Iwokrama Forest resulting in the division of the Iwokrama forest into a Wilderness Preserve (WP) and a Sustainable Utilisation Area (SUA).

experimental timber model and all of its other business models, including tourism and training services, are undertaken. All of Iwokrama’s models are designed to follow international economic, social and environmental best practices and employ innovative governance systems involving various stakeholders, the statement said.

Iwokrama also announced that Farfan and Mendes Limited (FML) was selected as the preferred candidate from among four companies which submitted proposals in the recent “Request for proposals for sawmilling operations” as advertised by the centre in November 2013.

As with its other businesses, the centre will replicate its overarching management and sustainability protocols in the timber operations by building local and regional capacity in sustainable forest management, including but not limited to models of benefit sharing among multiple stakeholders, Reduced Impact Logging (RIL) and the use of non-traditional species. Techniques for improving logging and processing efficiencies and the production of value added products will be the main tools of the second phase.

The centre will employ a 60-year cutting cycle, harvesting a maximum of 1800 hectare per year (which is less than 0.5 per cent of the Iwokrama forest) under a very selective harvesting regime which will result in only a few stems per hectare being removed and no large gaps in the forest canopy.

The timber operations will also be the subject of important research topics such as harvesting impacts on natural forests, including the effect on flora and fauna and impacts on local communities.

The centre will continue to integrally involve local communities, particularly through the North Rupununi District Development Board, at both the strategic and operational levels of the business.

Iwokrama looks forward to the expertise and professionalism that Farfan and Mendes, a reputable longstanding Guyanese company, will bring to sustainable forest management practices of the Iwokrama forest.

The centre will ensure all its operations continue to comply with the stipulations of the Guyana Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and other local regulatory agencies.

In addition, Iwokrama intends to once again achieve international accreditation of its forest management practices and operations by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in 2014.

Proper practices

The Iwokrama International Centre will continue to employ protocols and practices that demonstrate how a tropical forest can be conserved and used sustainably for ecological, social and economic benefits to local, national and international communities.

The Iwokrama International Centre (IIC) was established in 1996 under a joint mandate from the government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama forest, a unique reserve of 371,000 hectares of rainforest “in a manner that will lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the people of Guyana and to the world in general”.

The Iwokrama forest and its research centre, guided by an international science committee, are unique, providing a dedicated site in which to test the concept of a truly sustainable forest where conservation, environmental balance and economic use can be mutually reinforcing.

The IIC collaborates with the government of Guyana, the Commonwealth and other international partners, developing new approaches to enable countries with rainforests to market their ecosystem services while carefully managing their resources through creative conservation practices.

Meanwhile, Farfan and Mendes Limited (FML) has been in business in Guyana for 50 years.

Originally, FML was set up as a joint venture company with FT Farfan and Sons Limited of Trinidad and Tobago, a company that had its start in sawmilling in the Twin Island Republic and grew into the sawmill supply business there.

FML was intended and has continued to support the local timber industry, bringing many new technologies and practices to the local industry, including but not limited to, the introduction of chainsaws and chainsaw milling to Guyana in 1967 and band-mill technology in the early 1970s.

The company is the agent for Woodmizer mills and Stihl chainsaws and equipment among other products.

The company also has two sister companies involved in supplying the mining and industrial sectors both in Guyana and Suriname.

Suspected bandit kills policeman after disarming another rank – recaptured after fleeing Georgetown Public Hospital with officer’s weapon

till reeling from the slaying of two of its ranks in the November stand-off on Middle Street, the Guyana Police Force suffered another loss when a detective corporal was shot dead by a suspected bandit on Monday.

Dead is Detective Corporal Seburn Elias, 27, of Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara. He was shot to his abdomen during a scuffle with the suspected bandit as he attempted to retrieve the firearm in an alley at Third Street, Alberttown, Georgetown.

According to a police statement, about 19:00h on Monday, Elias was shot dead by Delon Abrams, 23, of South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, who had earlier managed to escape from police custody after disarming a police constable at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Guyana Times understands that Abrams reportedly asked to use the washroom. The policeman escorted him to the lavatory, but while there, a scuffle ensued, resulting in the bandit disarming the police rank.

Abrams had been arrest-

ed by public-spirited persons and handed over to the police following an alleged break and enter and larceny committed on a home at Turkeyen.

Abrams was severely beaten before being handed over to the police, and was being escorted by a constable, who was armed with his service .38 revolver, for medical treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital, when he managed to overpower the policeman in the hospital and took away his firearm before escaping.

Abrams was pursued by police ranks who caught up with him in a yard at Fourth Street, Alberttown. During efforts to arrest the escaped prisoner, Detective Corporal Elias, who was unarmed at the time, was involved in a scuffle during which he was shot to his left side. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment.

The prisoner has been recaptured and the firearm recovered.

Hospital moments after the shooting, said he was told that a rank was disarmed by a suspected bandit who had gone to seek medical attention.

He said after the incident, a young police rank gave chase but the suspect made his way into an alleyway in Alberttown. The brave policeman, he added, followed him and they had a confrontation during which Elias was shot twice to his abdomen. Brumell added that the firearm has been recovered, and the suspected bandit has

been recaptured at Fourth and Cummings streets. He was again taken into police custody.

Negligence

The police chief also disclosed that from all indications, there were some level of negligence displayed by the ranks. In addition, Brumell could not confirm if the bandit was taken to the medical facility in handcuffs and as such, he has instructed “A” Division Commander George Vyphius and others to investigate the matter

thoroughly.

In an invited comment, Vyphius said he was made aware of the shooting incident close to one hour after it occurred. Initially, he was told that a police rank was shot, but a little while later he received another call saying that the man had succumbed.

At the medical facility on Monday night, several police ranks were seen in tears after they learnt of the passing of their colleague. Some claimed that for the short while they knew him, Elias was a dedicated police officer who loved the job.

After some time, a relative of the dead rank appeared on the scene and was comforted

by Commander Vyphius. She was then escorted by senior ranks of the force, including Police Superintendent Errol Watts, to view the body.

Guyana Times understands that Elias was stationed at the Brickdam Police Station where he had been posted for the Christmas season.

In December, a prisoner, Edgar Blackman of Houston, East Bank Demerara escaped under similar circumstances: he was under police guard, nursing injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

He had also requested the use of the washroom facility, but instead used the opportunity to escape.

It was reported that he ran from the Male Surgical Ward to the Intensive Care Unit, down a stairway and was chased by police ranks who opened fire causing damage to the window of a nearby classroom. Blackman then scaled a fence and escaped through East Street.

Back in November, businessman Deryck Kanhai was shot dead after going berserk and slaying four persons, including two policemen: 24-year-old Lance Corporal Michael Forde and his colleague, 35-year-old Constable Sherwin Pantlitz, who both had responded to the shooting.

The businessman also slew Crown Taxi Service dispatcher Vanessa Williams and one of the drivers, Bonny Paul. Another taxi driver of the service, Paul Raman, of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara, was injured during the mayhem. he Carnegie School of Home Economics is looking to utilise more technology even as it seeks to rebrand and forge greater partnerships with local technical institutions.

At a news conference on Monday at the school, Principal Penelope Harris said it will be partnering with other institutions on technical training as well.

Harris said the school’s vision for 2020 is to become operational under a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system which creates national development through innovation, employment and entrepreneurship.

The principal stated

that 2014 will be a year of change since the school “is going to be partnering with other institutes in TVET”.

She added that members of staff will be able to interact with persons from the different technical institutes to “observe some of their best practices”.

Harris said that the institute is also in the process of providing skills training for Guyanese from every sector of the economy.

Chief Education Officer Olato Sam stated that a more learner friendly approach must be taken across the board in the education system, adding that TVET has now been adopted as the national approach

for technical education.

“We’ve long recognised that technical education has to have a place in the curriculum at all levels in the education system.”

Sam said this should start at the lowest level – nursery school. He noted that there is widespread recognition of the “teacher and pupil in the teacher-pupil learning process”. This goes beyond content knowledge and emphasises skills acquisition, “including traits such as problem solving, decision making, team work, effective communication and critical thinking”, all of which are invaluable in the work environment.

Sam disclosed that the school will soon be transformed into a world-class hospitality institution. The Carnegie School of Home Economics as it is now known was established by a Scotsman, Andre Carnegie in the 19th century when several institutions were set up to educate the younger generation, primarily women. It was formerly known as the Carnegie Trade School. Over the years, alumni of the school have worked in sectors across the Caribbean and Guyana.

In a release, Qualfon said around 13:35h, an electrical shortage in a back-up AC unit caused a portion of its office building to be overtaken with smoke. There was no fire, but the smoke set off a fire alarm in the building.

The incident occurred during routine maintenance and affected one redundant AC unit, the company said. As per company safety procedure, Qualfon evac-

uated all employees in the building. The fire department responded promptly and performed a thorough inspection of the building.

When the fire department determined it was safe, Qualfon employees were allowed back into the building.

“No injuries were reported; therefore, there was no need for medical assistance,” the company said, adding that the incident caused a one-hour interruption to its business; however, the building remains air conditioned and comfortable, because only one backup unit was affected.

wo weeks after a low level trough caused death and destruction in St Vincent and the Grenadines, residents were bracing for the passage of another weather system late on Monday.

At least nine people were killed and four others remain missing after the Christmas Eve weather system caused hundreds of mil-

lions of dollars in damages.

Weather forecasters have been advising that a trough system is expected to begin affecting the island late Monday into early Tuesday and that it was located east of the Lesser Antilles.

The advisory said that the weather system would add to the general instability across the eastern Caribbean as moisture lev-

els increase.

“This system could produce some moderate to heavy showers over the Windward Islands,” the Met Office said.

Meanwhile, schools which were due to re-open after the Christmas holidays on Monday will remain closed for another week, according to the Education Ministry.

Some of the schools, which are being used as emergency shelters, are still without pipe-borne water.

Most of the roadways have been cleared even as residents continue to be affected by intermittent water problems. Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves said that efforts are being made to help people who lost most of their appliances in the storm. A radiothon on Sunday resulted in pledges of EC$127,000. Nicaragua canal construction delayed

The government said the waterway will bring prosperity to the region

he construction of a canal in Nicaragua linking the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean has been delayed by a year and will not begin until 2015.

The head of the canal authority, Manuel Coronel Kautz, said more time is needed to carry out feasibility studies and choose a route.

The estimated cost of the projected waterway is US$40 billion (£25 billion).

Environmentalists said Nicaragua’s alternative to the Panama Canal will bring permanent risk to the region.

President Daniel Ortega had said Nicaragua planned to begin construction in May 2014.

He said the project will give the Central American nation – one of the poorest in the region – its “economic independence”.

But Coronel Kautz said

construction would now “probably” begin next year.

He told La Prensa newspaper in Nicaragua that only when the feasibility studies were concluded would it be possible to choose a “definite route”.

Several routes were proposed, all of them about three times longer than the Panama Canal, which took 10 years to build and was finished in 1914.

The waterway connects the Caribbean with the Pacific via Lake Nicaragua or Cocibolca, Central America’s largest freshwater lake. Its length is estimated at just under 300km (190 miles).

Hong Kong-based HKND Group was given a 50-year concession by Nicaragua’s Congress in June 2013. The Nicaraguan government will get a minority share of the profits generated by the canal.

ismanagement by the Agro Invest Corporation (AIC) has resulted in the loss of a projected J$50 million worth of onions at the

Plantain Garden River (PGR) Agro-Park in St Thomas, which is among those touted to produce Jamaica out of debt under the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

agreement.

AIC is government’s project management and execution agency responsible for certain deliverables in all agro-parks across the island.

Further, the more than 40 farmers involved in the onion project at PGR are on the brink of throwing in the towel after a raw deal left them each owing J$300,000 in loans to the St Thomas Cooperative Credit Union, despite AIC being responsible for the loss of the crop.

The Jamaica Observer obtained a copy of a status investigative report compiled by the Rural Agricultural Development Agency (RADA) which confirmed the farmers’ claims that they were misled by AIC, which failed to provide the irrigation system in a timely manner despite J$100,000 of the J$300,000 loan being allocated for it.

The farmers told the Observer that they objected to an overhead irrigation system as they did not believe this was suitable for crops, given the soil type, but their concern was ignored.

However, the status report made it clear that overhead irrigation should have been avoided.

housands of African migrants have marched in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, appealing for the support of Western governments against Israel’s detention policy toward migrants who entered the country illegally.

Red Stripe to sign off on cassava project lease agreement

ED Stripe will sign a lease agreement with the Agro Investment Corporation of Jamaica today for a plot of land at Bernard Lodge that the beer maker says will serve as the launch of its pilot farm and factory in a project aimed at replacing the majority of imported inputs with local produce.

Under its Project Grow, Red Stripe plans to grow raw materials locally, with an aim to replace 70 per cent of import-

ed inputs by 2020. The local brewer has already started to explore the use of cassava – it was expected to complete three pilot brews for its cassava beer by the end of 2013.

It is a move replicating parent company Diageo’s investments in supply chain rationalisation for its breweries in Africa. This came as the beer market tightened, forcing brew masters to reshape future competition by turning to edible food crops such as cassava, sor-

ghum and maize as cheap and reliable sources of raw materials compared to imported barley.

Red Stripe had indicated in November that the project was being delayed due to troubles it had getting the lease agreement with government. Egypt amends energy programme to encourage investment – IMF

he International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a statement that poor domestic policies in the region and a delay in urgent amendments may lead to deterioration of the economic status of countries.

On a positive note, the IMF noted that Egypt is preparing a programme for gas

distribution through smart cards in order to encourage investments, simplify customs norms and develop logistical services that would increase Egyptian exports by 13 per cent.

Egypt is currently amending its energy supply system, the IMF said. Egypt has increased its petrol prices in the period of 2012 to

2013 by 112 per cent for luxury cars, it said.

Egypt also increased oil prices for the heavy industry by 50 per cent, while electricity prices for families went up by 16 per cent in January 2013. The price of gas and oil used for electricity production rose by 33 per cent, the IMF said. (allAfrica)

.S. stocks slipped on Monday after a mixed batch of economic reports, which showed a slowdown in growth in the U.S. services sector and a rebound in new orders for factory goods.

Two measures of activity in the services sector indicated slower growth in December, indicating the economic recovery remains modest, while a separate report showed factory orders rose as expected in

November.

The S&P 500 closed out 2013 with a gain of 2.4 per cent in December, its fourth straight month of gains. But the benchmark index has stumbled in the first three trading sessions out of the gate in 2014, falling more than one per cent so far in January.

“With respect to the data, there were no huge surprises so with that huge year-end rally and working off that overbought con-

dition, there is the potential for days like this where we don’t get a lot of market movement,” said Todd Salamone, vice president of research at Schaeffer’s Investment Research in Cincinnati.

Salamone also said investors may be hesitant, with earnings season on the horizon as well as events such as Friday’s payrolls report and the release of the Fed minutes on Wednesday.

Europe UK services sector growth slows – but still outpaces eurozone average

ritain’s services sector maintained its year-long surge in output during December as businesses reported a rise in confidence for 2014.

The rise in activity was a little weaker than the previous month and the pace of growth was slowest since June, but still outstripped the eurozone average and especially France, which suffered a second successive month of falling services output – and at an accelerating rate.

In the UK slower growth in December reflected a general wilting across the major business sectors in the last month of 2013 with the exception of construction. Figures last week revealed that manufacturing growth dipped, though like services remained at historic highs.

The Markit/CIPS purchasing managers index (PMI) found that after accounting for seasonal factors, the headline business activity index regis-

tered a level of 58.8, down from 60 in November.

Optimism among the survey panel was at its highest since the coalition government came to power in March 2010, with businesses indicating they plan to increase investment in capacity, new products and marketing during 2014.

amsung Electronics Co Ltd is bracing for its weakest smartphone profit growth this year since 2007 as arch rival Apple Inc challenges its domination in China’s US$80 billion market.

Samsung’s mobile devices business, which earns two thirds of the company’s profit, will come under pressure when Apple makes its phones available from January 17 via China Mobile Ltd, through which Samsung has been selling smartphones for

around seven years.

Apple is also widely expected to sell smartphones with larger screens come autumn when it traditionally announces products, neutralising a selling point that Samsung has enjoyed since introducing its Galaxy Note in late 2011.

Harbour Bridge to be closed Wednesday night for repairs

he Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) will be closed to vehicular traffic from 22:00h on Wednesday to 04:00h on Thursday, to facilitate repairs after a vessel collided with the bridge, causing major damage on Sunday.

and is expected to resume opening for river vessels on Thursday.

DHB General Manager Rawlston Adams, at a press conference on Monday, said the incident occurred on Sunday about 05:15h, and involved an internationally-registered fuel tanker owned by PritchardGordon tankers of the

United Kingdom. According to Adams, the captain of the vessel, a local, was given clearance to transit at 05:15h; however, it was observed that the vessel was approaching in an unorthodox position.

“After that was noticed, instructions were then given to the pilot again … the response from the pilot was ‘I know what I am doing,’ ” Adams revealed.

Subsequently, after the pilot’s failure to observe instructions, the vessel struck the bridge, damaging the structure.

Inspections have thus far shown damage to two cluster piles that are used as guides for marine pilots to line up their vessels to transit the bridge, four connecting posts, one pontoon and the transom. The bridge was also slightly repositioned following the mishap; however, that was corrected sev-

“We expect that the owners of the vessel would bear all the costs. I have had an initial discussion and they have made a commitment that once we do a joint inspection and we assess the cost, they have given a commitment that they will stand the cost for the repairs,” Adams stated. “We had fabricated those components a long time ago in the event of such. We are confident we have the necessary resources to fix and restore the bridge to proper order,” added Adams.

A joint inspection by officials of the DHB and the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) and surveyors was expected to be conducted Monday afternoon to determine the “full cost” of the damage. Adams further

When Guyana Times visited the bridge on Monday, engineers were involved in welding work on the massive structure. Also visible were the few inches remaining of one of the damaged clusters.

One DHB engineer pointed out the site where the second cluster once stood. That cluster consisted of approximately 13-17 timber poles which were knocked down and out.

An investigation has been launched and is being handled by MARAD, as well as officials from the international agent, Guyana National Shipping Corporation. According to Adams, the loss has been more economical rather than financial. He explained that commuters who were stuck in traffic could have been doing something worthwhile which would have provided them with an income.

Engineers are working assiduously to have the flow of river traffic and continuous free flow of vehicular traffic resume.

Caricom to focus on climate change – new chairman

incentian Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said Monday that he would use his six-month term as chairman of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) to deal with the deleterious effects of climate change on the socio-economic future of the 15-member bloc.

St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia, and Dominica are now emerging from the effects of a weather system that left a trail of death and destruction over the Christmas holidays.

“There is a letter which Baldwin sent to me which I have reviewed and make one or two slight alterations and suggestions, but we have to prepare for a donors’ conference well, maybe in March may be in February… but we have to prepare for it well so that we can get the donors to make pledges,” he said, recalling a similar conference had taken place to help Grenada after it was battered by a recent hurricane.

“I know some of the donors came through and others did not, but at least we need to do that to lift the profile,” Gonsalves said. The St Vincent and the Grenadines prime minister told reporters that an insurance scheme organised through the World Bank, to which

all the Caribbean countries contribute, does not go far enough. “To the extent that the monies you get from the Catastrophic Relief Insurance System is fairly minimal, but, of course, every little bit helps,” he said.

Gonsalves said he had already written to the leaders of several countries and was now waiting to see “what kind of grant assistance we can get, because we really need grants preferably. “The World Bank will give soft loan monies, the CDB (Caribbean Development Bank) will give soft loan monies, the European Union will give grants, Venezuela will give grants, (and) Taiwan will give grants.”

In his New Year’s message, President Donald Ramotar had alluded to what he described as the “very important… issue of climate change and the challenges it poses.” He noted that in recent weeks “we have witnessed extreme weather in Guyana and the

wider Caribbean. This has resulted in millions of dollars in damage and loss of life. The scientific evidence is showing that for our region, which is one of the most vulnerable, these weather events will become more frequent as the impacts of global climate change intensify.”

In this regard, Ramotar said he intends this year to work with other Caricom heads to ensure regional action on climate change is given top priority. “Recognising our own vulnerabilities here in Guyana, efforts will intensify in 2014 to improve and expand infrastructure, in particular our sea and river defence and drainage and irrigation systems; enhance our forecasting capabilities and response mechanisms; and build climate resilience in the social and productive sectors of our economy. These will be done within the framework of our Low Carbon Development Strategy,” the president assured. (CMC)

fter several pleas by the mining sector, President Donald Ramotar has committed to giving miners duty-free concessions in specific areas to lessen their burden.

He made this declaration on Monday at the annual miners’ meeting, which was held at the Regency Hotel.

The president announced that duty-free concessions will be given to equipment bearing new technology which will help to minimise the use of harmful substances. He added that they will try to assist those miners who have difficulty obtaining loans from banks as he highlighted the need for hire purchase legislation.

In addition, he noted that permission was granted for the sector to import its own fuel which will cut costs.

He went on to speak about reclamation, noting that the government has already started working on nurseries, as he sought partnerships from the miners. “We have said long ago that we would help those very small miners, we will help them to reclaim so they wouldn’t have that expense and we will do it for them...

The president added: “We can also consider, I will leave the details to the negotiators, but we can possibly consider reducing some of the rentals for the properties you have.”

Record-breaking

In addressing the gathering of miners, the president noted that the industry has broken a record which was set years ago and is a leading contributor to the development of the country’s economy. He assured the miners that he not only sees their success but their struggles and challenges as well. The president noted that the mining industry is a finite one which has to be sustained so that the country can continue to benefit from it.

He pointed out that one such measure that can allow this is the improvement of human capital. “Countries that have developed the

most are the ones where you have a more skilled and educated work force and there are some countries that don’t have minerals and natural resources, but have done extremely well and that is one of things we are doing.

We have already achieved in our country universal primary education and we are now trying to achieve universal secondary education,” stated Ramotar.

He further acknowledged the massive blow the industry took last year with the drop in gold prices, noting that he has consulted experts who disclosed that prices will not go up for a while; nevertheless, he anticipates that by the end of the year, they will. The president explained that the drop in gold prices was a global travesty; however, nothing has happened internationally to suggest that the prices will further deflate.

Commendation

He commended the large-scale miners who subsequently diversified into other areas, this he noted will make a positive contribution to the development of the country. President Ramotar also made mention of the deplorable state

of the infrastructure in the interior where mining is prevalent. He noted that quality infrastructure enables the smooth flow of any industry, adding that the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission is spending a lot of money to ensure that adequate infrastructure is available to further develop the country.

He further noted that climate change is affecting the country, and that everyone should play their part in ensuring that they are involved in environmentally safe practices. On this note, he highlighted efforts undertaken to move away from the use of mercury in mining operations and to find an alternative.

The president recognised too the contributions of the Brazilian miners, saying he will ensure that the process of obtaining their work permits is efficient. He disclosed that a body will be set up to reduce the time it takes to get the permit and to cut out some of the “wickedness” and harassment that takes place. “Once people are here and respect our laws and are here legally and working honestly, we will not have any problems with them,” he said.

Antigua to host Caribbean Travelling Film Showcase

ntigua and Barbuda will host the fourth Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase featuring 22 films from 16 Caribbean countries.

The January 10 to12 film festival is sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Film, Art and Industry (ICAIC), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), TELESUR and the Cuban Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Caribbean

Community (Caricom) and several Caribbean academic institutions. The festival is being coordinated by HAMA films.

The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase, which has been in existence since 2007, will this time around feature films from Haiti, Guadeloupe, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Jamaica, Venezuela, The Bahamas, The Dominican Republic and Antigua and Barbuda.

Schumacher condition remains A “stable but critical”

he hospital treating Michael Schumacher for head injuries says his condition remains stable but critical.

Doctors in Grenoble say he is being continually monitored but they will not be releasing more health details.

The former racing champion has been in a medically induced coma for the past eight days following a skiing accident in the French Alps.

Meanwhile prosecutors investigating the accident plan to give details of their probe on Wednesday.

The state prosecutor in Albertville, Patrick Quincy, told the AP news agency that French investigators were trying to obtain smartphone footage of the

accident which the German magazine Der Spiegel reported had been shot by a bystander.

The magazine says that a flight attendant from Essen who was filming his girlfriend on the slopes hap-

pened to catch what he believes was Schumacher’s fall in the background.

The 35-year-old planned to hand the footage over to prosecutors, Der Spiegel reported.

Monday’s hospital statement said that the medical team will not be giving details of Schumacher’s treatment for reasons of privacy, and no further press conferences were planned “for the time being”.

The statement also asked journalists to refrain from reporting claims about the driver’s health not originating from the medical team or his management.

Thousands line streets to say farewell to Eusebio

ndy Flower has reiterated his desire to remain as England team director, but admitted “we’ve made mistakes” during the Ashes tour of Australia.

Under Flower, the England team won three successive Ashes series, their first global limited-overs tournament - the World Twenty20 of 2010 - and enjoyed periods at the top of the rankings in all three formats of the game.

But as a result of the whitewash defeat in Australia, England have fallen to fourth in the world Test rankings.

Furthermore, the margin of defeat in the five games ranks as the worst England have experienced in 30 years.

“We’re not proud of that result,” Flower admitted. “It’s quite a bitter pill to swallow, but we have to face up to that reality that we’ve been totally outplayed.

“We’ve had a lot of good times. This was not a good time for any of us involved with the England cricket team. I like to feel pride about the way we go about things. I don’t feel pride in the way we played in this Test series. We have some thinking to do and some decisions to make. We’ve got to review what’s happened on this tour. Obviously, we’ve made mistakes. I need to meet with the key decision-makers to decide what we’re going to do.”

“As part of our review we’ll be looking at playing personnel and support staff and making sure we’ve got the right people on board for the future, but this will be a new start, and so it should be.

“It does feel like the end of some type of era and there will be some sort of new start.

We might have to take a little more pain before we have sustained success again and we might have to ask for a little patience in that regard over the coming months.

he funeral has taken place in Portugal of the football legend Eusebio after tens of thousands turned out to pay their last respects in Lisbon.

Eusebio died on Sunday of a heart attack aged 71.

He was laid to rest in wet weather at the Lumiar cemetery in the north of the city soon after nightfall.

Earlier, thousands lined Lisbon’s streets as the funeral cortege passed on its way from Benfica’s Luz stadium where cheering fans paid tribute.

Mourners applauded and cheered on seeing the coffin draped in the colours of Eusebio’s club Benfica.

At the stadium, some 10,000 fans sang and let off firecrackers. The coffin was placed briefly on a golden plinth at the centre of the pitch before the hearse took it on a circuit of the stadium.

“For me, he is simply the creator of football,” said 24-year-old fan Luis Marques.

One banner left at a statue of Eusebio read: “I haven’t come to say goodbye, but to say thank you.”

Portugal has declared three days of national mourning for Eusebio, who has been described as Portugal’s first and greatest football superstar.

Born in Mozambique when it was still a Portuguese colony, Eusebio da Silva Ferreira went on to play 64 times for Portugal, scoring 41 goals.

The Benfica striker was top scorer at the 1966 World Cup in England, with nine goals, including four against North Korea.

Widely considered one of the best players of all time, he scored 733 times in 745 professional matches.

United by pride

When his death was announced on Sunday, celebrities from the world of football and beyond paid tribute to the player known in his day as the Black Panther.

“Football has lost a legend,” Fifa President Sepp Blatter wrote on Twitter.

Portugal’s President Anibal Cavaco Silva said: “Portugal has today lost one of its most beloved sons, Eusebio da Silva Ferreira.

Glittering record

Famed for his blistering acceleration and dribbling skills, Eusebio was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965.

He won the European Cup with Benfica in 1962 and was in the side that lost to Manchester United in the 1968 Wembley final.

In the 1966 World Cup, Eusebio’s goals helped Portugal win all their group games as title holders Brazil were eliminated in the first round.

He then starred in a dramatic 5-3 win over North Korea in the quarter-finals, with his four goals helping his side come back from 3-0 down.

Portugal went on to lose 2-1 in the last four to England, with Eusebio in tears as he left the pitch at the end of the game.

S Dhoni has indicated he is not averse to continuing as India captain in all formats, saying it would be unfair to burden a new player with the mantle of captaincy with just a year left for the 2015 World Cup. “It’s a point of no return with the World Cup literally one year away from now,” Dhoni said at a promotional event in Delhi, according to PTI. “It won’t give a new guy the ideal time to play at least 70-80-90 games [before] the World Cup. That’s what we would like to have him play before the World Cup. “I understand the pressure… you get the kind of things which give you more experience than the others. So, we have to go through it.”

Dhoni was responding to a question on giving up captaincy in one format to prolong his career. In 2012, Dhoni had said he might have to give up a format to lead India’s title defence in 2015, but would take a call only at the end of 2013.

There have always been concerns over how much workload Dhoni can take across his multiple roles but he said his body was holding up fine at the moment. “I am really fortunate to see where I am right now with the amount of cricket that we are playing these days. As of now, it’s looking good. The body is closely knit together. How it will be [in future], I don’t know but so far so good.” India lost their recent twoTest series 0-1 in South Africa but Dhoni said India’s performance on the tour showed they had promising players, who would only get better with the exposure on upcoming trips. “Yes, we had some tough times. We had a bad session [in Durban]. We had one really bad session because of which we were on the losing side.

“I think the process is more important. It can go worse than that [the performance in South Africa], but the good thing is that at least we know the players are there. We had a lot of good sessions in South Africa.

“It’s a process where we have to improve.

I think on the wickets that are helpful we have done well. Outside India, at times, you get wickets where we have to hit the deck hard and that goes [against] what our bowlers actually bowl.

“I am talking about the majority of bowlers, that’s one area where we have to still learn. We have seen in the past also, if there’s help, then we will get 20 wickets. ike a politician brought back from the cold due to change at the top, Shane Watson is no longer an anguished voice in the Australian wilderness.

The most ardent inhouse critic of the national team’s former direction, Watson has added reason to feel satisfied about Australia’s Ashes rampage this summer. They have come a long way since the fractious days of less than a year ago, when Watson and three others were suspended for a Test match in India as relationships with the former coach Mickey Arthur broke down.

The day after Australia completed a barely believable 5-0 sweep of England in the second of back-to-back Ashes series, Watson spoke of how Darren Lehmann had returned a sense of fun and balance to a dressing room that had become insular, intense and often unpleasant during the latter days of Arthur’s tenure.

Watson did not enjoy the “high performance” direction the team culture had taken, and was not shy about saying so. As a result of this frankness, his relationship with the captain Michael Clarke suffered, and he was also stood down from the vice-captaincy. But Lehmann’s appointment - and the wise medical counsel of the team doctor Peter Brukner - has allowed Watson to rehabilitate, as the team around him gathered strength in England before rumbling to the most comprehensive series triumph imaginable in Australia.

“Personally it makes it more sweet,” Watson said.

“To know that there were times when I knew I had to stand strong with my beliefs only for the betterment of what I thought was the amazing talent we had in the group. I certainly would never take back how I stood and voiced my opinions at certain times. I know that when there are down times, if you stand strong for long enough and persevere for long enough things might turn around and they certainly have in a way that I never expected.

“I’ve always had certain beliefs and I’ve been lucky enough to be around so many great teams, whether it was the Australian team or oth-

er teams that I’ve played in. I got to know most importantly that you need to be making sure you’re having a lot of fun because it’s a game that if you take too seriously - and I do at times, and I’ve always got to turn myself around - you can really get too internal and the game gets too much for you.

That’s what was happening in the Australian team.”

Reflecting on the team room of 12 months ago, Watson said the concept of having fun and enjoying the game had been forsaken in pursuing goals that seemingly became less attainable the harder the team aspired to them. Lehmann reduced the tension in the air, while at the same time

encouraging his players to be themselves. By adding perspective to the team, Watson said Lehmann had helped make the quest for the Ashes a challenge to be enjoyed rather than an allconsuming struggle to be endured.

Largely thanks to Lehmann,Watson said the reality of playing cricket for Australia now matches up to the dream of doing so.

“That it was meant to be the time of your life had gone out the window,” Watson said. “It was more so you had to be desperate and put every other part of your life on hold to become the best player and best team in the world instead of just getting the perfect balance, which means you’re more chance of actually putting the performances on the board as a team and individually. And Darren knew that from experience and that’s exactly what he implemented.

“I know how lucky I am to be involved in such a special environment because it doesn’t always come along.

“It’s not just something you stumble across, it’s something that people do put a lot of time and effort in certain ways to be able to make sure that an environment like this is created and that’s the amazing skill that Darren Lehmann has brought in. It really is an absolute pleasure to be a part of, not just the dream of playing cricket for Australia, but to actually be involved in something that is so much fun, that’s the reason I started playing and why I’m playing now.” (Cricinfo)

Blatter critical of Brazil’s World Cup preparations

IFA president Sepp Blatter has accused Brazil of being badly prepared with five months to go before it hosts this year’s World Cup. Six of the host nation’s 12 stadiums have failed to meet

FIFA’s December 31 completion deadline.

Three workers have been killed in recent accidents at stadiums in Sao Paulo and Manaus.

“No country has been so far behind in preparations since I

have been at FIFA,” Blatter told a Swiss newspaper.

The 77-year-old has worked for FIFA since 1975, becoming president in 1998.

He added: “It is the only host nation which has had so much time - seven years - in

which to prepare.”

The tournament opens on June 12 when the host nation face Croatia in Sao Paulo’s Arena Corinthians, where two workers died when a crane collapsed on to part of the roof on November 27.

That accident delayed the stadium’s completion date by several months, and it is not expected to be ready until mid-April.

Construction problems and public protests about the financial costs of hosting the World Cup have beset Brazil’s preparations for the tournament. Brazil - which lasted hosted the World Cup in 1950 - was awarded this year’s finals in 2007.

But when asked if the country had understood the scale of the work required, Blatter replied: “No. Brazil has just found out what it means and has started work much too late.” (BBC Sport)

t is a rare match in which a Sri Lanka fast bowler delivers more than 40 overs, but the intensity of Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal’s toil in the first Test has moved Mahela Jayawardene to mark them out as future matchwinners for Sri Lanka. Eranga and Lakmal bowled 41 and 46 overs respectively, sharing six wickets.

Each bowler delivered several spells without success, but they maintained exacting discipline and pace during lengthy occupations of the bowling crease. Their first-innings efforts were particularly notable as they combined mild movement with accuracy to help keep Pakistan’s scoring rate under three an over on a good batting track.

“Really happy about the way we came back in that Test,” Jayawardene said.

“We knew that there would be something in the pitch in the first innings, when we were out cheaply, and our fast bowlers were very good.

This is the first time two fast bowlers bowled this well for us in a long time. If we can help develop those two guys, I don’t think it will be hard to win overseas Tests in the future. Shaminda and Suranga both bowled really well.”

Sri Lanka’s batsmen, meanwhile had kept Saeed Ajmal wicketless for 49 overs in the second dig. Ajmal had never before bowled more than 20 overs without a breakthrough in the second innings, and Jayawardene suggested familiarity with Ajmal’s bowling had earned Sri Lanka an edge that may prove definitive in the

coming matches. This is Sri Lanka’s fifth Test series against Pakistan in the past five years.

“We’ve played a lot of cricket against Saeed Ajmal.

He’s a trump bowler for his team, and we knew that if we batted well against him, we could remove that threat to some extent. The younger players batted really well against him, so hopefully we can continue that. That said, he is a very good bowler. There’s a chance he can take wickets against us at any moment, but if we play him like we did in the first match and also play the quicks well, there’s a good chance for us to win the series. We won the last series against Pakistan 1-0 in Sri Lanka by sticking to similar plans.”

Jayawardene said Sri Lanka were pleased with the draw in Abu Dhabi, but said they would need to sustain the batsmen’s form to earn a better result in Dubai.

“It’s really important that we did well in the first match, having not played Tests in for so long. To be in such a bad situation against Pakistan and then to come back was really good. We got back into the game and that’s what Test cricket is about. Different things happen on different days. When we are behind, we have to show a little character and we did that, even turning it into a potentially winning situation.

“But it’s important to realise that’s over now, and we have to go and look at this next pitch and start again. If we do that, and keep to the plans that we’ll devise, it shouldn’t be hard to win here.”

Arsenal forward Walcott out of World Cup with knee injury

rsenal’s Theo Walcott will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for at least six months with a knee injury.

The England forward, 24, suffered the injury during the 2-0 FA Cup win over Tottenham on Saturday.

An Arsenal statement read: “Theo has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.

“He will have surgery in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, thus missing the rest of the season and the World Cup.” Walcott’s Arsenal team-mate Aaron Ramsey Welshman wrote on Twitter: “Gutted for Theo, he’ll come back stronger after this. Been fantastic for us so far this season. Have a speedy recovery mate.”

Guyana hunting 10th regional one-day title, says Johnson – feels team will be very competitive

anager Alvin Johnson says Guyana will be going all out to secure their tenth regional 50-over title when the West Indies Cricket Board’s NAGICO Super50 tournament bowls off in Trinidad and Tobago on January 30.

The eight-team tournament, which also includes the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) and ICC affiliate Ireland, will run until February 17.

The Guyanese, who last won the title when they defeated Barbados in near darkness in the 2005 KFC Cup final at Bourda, will face Ireland in their opening game on January 31 at the Queens Park Oval in Portof-Spain, Trinidad.

In addition to Ireland, Guyana will face the Windward Islands and defending champions Jamaica in Group ‘A’, while host

Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, the Leeward Islands and CCC make up Group ‘B’.

In an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Sport on Monday, Johnson said is he confident his team will be very competitive throughout the tournament.

“Judging from the play-

ers available, I am confident we will be very competitive throughout the tournament,” he commented.

The selectors are yet to name the final 14-man squad, but Johnson said “taking into consideration the players that are available to us, we have a good chance of going all the way once the guys play to their full potential.”

Johnson, a former headmaster, also indicated that the adverse weather has affected preparations somewhat. However, he is hopeful the weather will change and allow the players to get in much valuable practice.

“Our sessions have been affected by the inclement weather, but nevertheless I am satisfied with preparations so far,” Johnson added.

The first phase of the team preparation commenced in December with 37 players, but it has been narrowed down to 26 for the second stage, which started

cores of persons lined the roadways on Sunday last throughout West Demerara to pay homage to Slingerz Football Club that won the third installation of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) Banks Beer Knockout Cup. Playing at the Guyana National Stadium on New Year’s Day, Slingerz FC edged Santos 3-2 to become the first team from the “west side” to ever win a major tournament.

The motorcade started from Wales and headed to Parika after which the mile-long line of vehicles all headed to the Vergenoegen Village rice mill tarmac where everyone gathered for a free concert by Guyana’s international reggae star Natural Black, along with Jumo and Super Ray one man band.

“It’s good that we can bring the west side people joy,” said an elated Dwayne Jacobs. The Slingerz FC captain pointed out, “The good part is that we are not even a year-old in the business and we like how people would support our team.

It makes us feel good about what we do and encourage us to play harder.”

Jacobs, a prominent member of the Golden Jaguars, said that while the team is happy and still celebrating the victory with their fans, they are still far from accomplishing all they want to, and as such, the Banks Beer Cup victory is to simply let Guyana know that his club means busi-

Up next for Slingerz FC is the second West Side Cup, which is set to start midFebruary and features only the teams playing under the West Demerara Football Association.

The overseas-based Johnson was in top form as his off season training showed signs of an improved athlete. He registered a time of 33 minutes, 43 seconds to top his countryman, who is also based overseas in Lionel D’Andrade, who finished second in 36 minutes, 24 seconds. Chomeynie Pinas of Suriname finished third in the event in 37 minutes, 15 seconds.

The event, which was run across a bridge built in the form of a hill spanning approximately two miles, was a tough challenge for the Guyanese contingent as D’Andrade explained to this publication via telephone.

“It was a tough bridge but I’m pleased with my performance; I would also like to thank my sponsors Builders Lumber Yard,” D’Andrade told Guyana Times Sport.

Morgan, on the other hand, was her usual dominant self topping the female category with a time of 41 minutes, 47 seconds, ahead of Llsida Toemere (44 minutes, 31 seconds) and

West Indies announce squad for T20Is in New Zealand

he Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in collaboration with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will stage the first ProAm boxing card of 2014 on January 26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Dubbed “Guyana Friday Night Fights”, the card will feature four professional bouts and a similar number of amateur fights, with action set to get underway at 20:00 hours.

On Monday, the GBBC

match-maker Eion Jardine released the names of the eight professional boxers who will appear on the card, which he said will be the catalyst for the rest of the year.

In the feature fight, the evergreen Howard Eastman will challenge fellow Berbician Derek Richmond for the Super Middleweight title of Guyana in a 12-round contest. Richmond is the current holder of the title, having floored James Walcott

on Boxing Day in Linden to claim ownership.

The talented young boxer will start as favourite, having chalked up knockout wins over Walcott, Romeo Norville and Edmond DeClou in his last three fights, but would have to contend with an ageing Eastman who would no doubt be looking to prove that age is just a number.

The main supporting fight will also involve two Berbicians as Gladwin Dorway and Kelsie George

are set to go head-on in a sixround Middleweight clash.

Another Berbician Richard Williamson will trade punches with David Thomas in a four-round Junior Lightweight fight, while Cassius Matthews and Laured Stewart are set to collide in a four-round Welterweight showdown.

According to Jardine, the GBA will announce the names of the amateur boxers to appear on the card shortly. Admission to the venue will be $1,000.

GDF fitness trainers join national cricket camp

he Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has further enhanced the coaching staff currently attached to the encamped national cricket squad by securing the services of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) fitness trainers, Patrick King and Carl Stephenson.

The two certified fitness trainers joined current coaches Rayon Griffith, Esaun Crandon and Julian Moore on Monday as the players went through their paces at the Everest ground In an effort to ensure that the national team is fit and ready for the upcoming West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)

AMILTON, New Zealand – The West Indies Cricket Board advised that its selection panel has chosen a 15-member squad for a series of two Twenty20 Internationals against New Zealand later this month.

Regular West Indies T20I captain Darren Sammy has been ruled out of selection due to a hamstring injury he sustained prior to the start of the third One-day International against the New Zealanders on Boxing Day in Queenstown.

“Darren is undergoing treatment and should be fit to return to playing duties in time for the Regional Super50 Tournament which starts later this month in Trinidad,” said West Indies team physiotherapist CJ Clark.

Sammy will not return home immediately, but will remain in New Zealand to continue his rehabilitation under the direction of Clark.

His place in the squad will be filled by left-arm spinner Nikita Miller and ODI captain Dwayne Bravo will lead the side in his absence.

ristiano Ronaldo scored his 400th career goal as Real Madrid laboured to a 3-0 victory over Celta Vigo and reduced the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Celta had wasted a number of chances before Karim Benzema capitalised on shoddy defending by prodding home.

Ronaldo, who had been largely anonymous, then made sure of victory by converting Daniel Carvajal’s cross.

And in the dying seconds of the match, Ronaldo added gloss to the scoreline after being put through by Gareth Bale.

eather Knight scored an unbeaten 123 in England’s warmup match in Perth ahead of the Women’s Ashes series, which starts on Friday.

Knight struck 20 fours in 174 balls before retiring as England closed on 362-7 on the first day of their two-day game against Australia A. Charlotte Edwards’ side won the toss and elected to bat at Floreat Oval.

Edwards scored 77 in a first-wicket partnership of 135 with Knight while Lydia Greenway also made 76.

England start the defence of their Ashes crown at the Waca in Perth on Friday in the only Test match of the multi-format series.

The four-day Test is then followed by three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 games.

Six points are awarded for a Test win and two points for each ODI and T20 victory. England won the home series last year 12-4.

Players not taking chances, says Gibson

elson, New Zealand - West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has blamed second-string players for his side’s poor results in recent times and accused them of not making use of the opportunities given to them.

West Indies, suffering from the loss of seven players through injury, lost to New Zealand by 58 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in the fourth One Day International (ODI) on Saturday.

The defeat means that West Indies, after leading the ODIs 1-0, have slipped to 2-1 with the final game scheduled for Tuesday Caribbean time.

“Our fielding… Couple of dropped catches, which would’ve changed [things]. The way we fielded in the whole innings, particularly towards the end, New Zealand got 25, 30 runs too many. It wasn’t a 280 pitch,” said Gibson.

“Then losing a wicket through a run-out, when you need to be sensible for the first 20 [overs] - with the new balls, it’s going be difficult. Losing a couple of wickets to run-outs was a tough blow. And then weather interrupted and that was that.”

Darren Sammy, who has suffered a hamstring injury, is out for about three weeks while Rampaul’s finger injury might be healed in time to play the fifth ODI which West Indies must win to tie the series.

“Ravi’s [finger] was a little sore, but he’s a tough guy. It’s just his left hand, so his bowling won’t be affected and once we get him pain-free, I’m pretty sure he will play,” the coach said.

“We’re still waiting for the results [of the tests done on Sammy].

He’s still limping around a bit. We’re not sure how he’s going to travel, but he’s staying with us for a little longer. The injury is a two- to threeweek situation. Hopefully, we can assess his situation for the T20s.” (windiescricket)
