In less than two weeks, a new Miss Guyana World will be crowned but in order to find that perfect young woman to represent Guyana at the international pageant, eight delegates have commenced their quest for the post.
The first competition, a beach beauty photo shoot, was held on Monday last which saw six of the delegates creating a stir in their skimpy two-piece swim wear as they showed off their feminine curves and grooves. Ayana Whitehead arrived in the country on Wednesday while Tiffany Megnath is expected to arrive on Sunday.
The well polished young ladies with hopes of becoming Guyana’s representative are slated to participate in the interview segment today, fol-
lowed by the fitness competi tion on May 18 and on Tuesday, May 20, the del egates will show case their tal ents.
The final preliminary competition will be held on Sunday, May 25 with the supermodel competition. All the events will be closed door.
However, the beach beauty photo shoot was one of the five specialised segments that will allow the contestants to earn
nus points towards their pre liminary scores.
The contestants, donned in swimsuits designed by Roger Gary, Marcie De Santos, and others, displayed their creativity in positioning at the Pegasus.

Coronation Show will be held on May 26 at the National Cultural Centre, and will feature the delegates in the talent, swimsuit, and evening wear and more importantly, the intelligence segment. Preliminary scores for the interview and special skills competition will be added to the final round.
Those competing for the coveted title are Rebekah London, Gericia Francis, Rafieya Husain, Cherese James, Denicia Williams, Atisha Gaskill, Ayana Whitehead, and Tiffany Megnath.

Jamzone NYC, which is slated for August 9, at The Village, Ralph Avenue, Brooklyn, is promised to be noth ing less than adrenaline-charged and plans have definite ly kick-started in this direction with the first booking of Mavado and now Timeka.
This talented young woman launched a music career in 2005 when she emerged as the winner of the first GT&T Jingle and Song Competition.
She has since risen to stardom and is currently working diligently to improve her craft while residing in the dance hall-reggae nation of Jamaica. Her most recent singles are “Come Over”, “Take it Easy” and “Undercover Lady”.
More acts are yet to be added to the Jamzone NYC line-up. The lineup is expected to have Skinny Fabulous, X2 and other Caribbean artistes.
While this will be the first year that Jamzone will be host ed in the US, the event is in its 14th year in Guyana where it is established as the greatest calendar event. Promoters are aiming for Guyana’s most anticipated event to make a similar impact on the international scene.
The place to be this Saturday evening is at Monaco Night Club for the first ever “Ciroc N Roll” party featuring Deejay Kevon X and Custodian International from Trinidad and Tobago’s Red 96.7FM.

3rd Dan Black belt instructor opens DOJO
Eric Hing, a third Dan black belt and instructor recently opened his own Dojo (the Central Shotokan Karatedo Association) at the Girl Guides Pavilion on Brickdam.
He has been practising the art of Karate-do for 15 years, beginning at the age of five, under well-known instructors Sensei Jackie Gomes, Sensei Charles Woon-a-Tai, Sensei Amir Khouri, Sensei Jeffrey Wong, Sensei Guy Low and Master Frank Woon-a-Tai, beginning at the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) dojo and more recently, the Guyana Karate College.
He was the 2013 Caribbean Kumite (junior) Champion, and is also a constant medallist in national and international tournaments.
Eric opened his own dojo with the aim of helping young people especially,
to find direction in life through karate training and discipline, in the hope of keeping them off the streets and helping to break the cycle of crime and violence, since Karate-do is taught as a means of character development, physical education and fitness and self defence.
Karate-do is an extremely powerful and effective martial art, but it is always taught and executed in a safe non-contact environment.
Eric also plays other sports. He has been a member the GCC (Georgetown Cricket Club) Hockey team for eight years and has made two U-21 national teams, even though his main focus is karate-do. This versatile young man is a proud husband and father of one. Those who wish to experience dojo with a difference; they can visit the Girl Guilds Pavilion on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Hunt for Miss Guyana Jamzone draws near
Hits and Jams Entertainment is in the process of recruiting the best looking females who have the charm, charisma and beauty to represent Guyana in the upcoming Miss Jamzone International Pageant.
The pageant is slated for August at the National Cultural Centre. To date, the entertainment group has identified seven perspective delegates but young ladies still have a chance to enter the competition
since the closing date for entries is next weekend.
Last year, Guyana’s delegate Alicia Best would have been selected from among a group of fantastic young ladies and represented Guyana well on the international stage. She was adjudged the first runner-up in the pageant with Trinidad and Tobago copping the title for the second year.
Once you are between the ages of 18 and 25, young ladies, you are eligible to apply. Since the hosting of Jamzone International Pageant, in Guyana, no delegates have been successful in keeping the crown here.
This is an opportune time for Guyana to take the leading step with the aim of copping the coveted title and more so, purse off the US$10,000. Entry forms can be uplifted from the Hits and Jams Headquarters at Lance Gibbs street, Queenstown, Georgetown.
Bass trackers fishing club hosted fishing competition at Rockstone
There was excitement and fierce competition at the recently concluded Bass Trackers Fishing Club’s Big Fish Competition held in Rockstone, Region 10.
Competitors from across the country travelled to the community to participate in the event which saw several fishing competitions being organised by the Bass Trackers Fishing Club as part of its events for the year. The club is seeking to make this and other competitions an annual event for sport fishing enthusiasts.
The fish catching competition started at 05:30h on Sunday in Rockstone and concluded at 15:00h. It was a perfect day for fishing which saw fishing enthusiasts boarding their boats and heading up the river in a quest to be the winners.
After the day of fishing, all of the participants returned to the judging area and exhibited their catch for judging. The three judges comprised of a member of the Rockstone community, a member of the media and one of the organisers.
The competitors were
excited for the day of adventure and were eager to see how their catch matched up against their competition. As they eagerly began weighing their catch, it slowly became clear who the winners were.

The Bass Trackers Fishing Club also has plans afoot to host a one day saltwater fishing competition before the end of this year with even more prizes and giveaways. This event was sponsored by Digicel, the Guyana Tourism Authority and the Bass Trackers Fishing Club.
16 to vie for Mister and Miss Guyana Talented Teen titles
The 14th edition of the Mister and Miss Guyana Talented Teen Pageant is set for July 6 at the National Cultural Centre with 16 talented young people vying for the coveted titles. The competition will see the delegates competing in various segments including an opening sequence, swimsuit, talent, evening wear and most importantly, the intelligence segment. In the talent segment, each delegate will be required to perform a Guyanese piece in the form of music, dance, poetry or any other talented area.
The pageant and activities planned are designed to provide each participant with the opportunity to promote their own causes as it concerns global warming and Guyana’s culture. The event titled “Gems of Guyana” is promoted by Simply Royal. The cotillion is slated for June 20, at National Cultural Centre tarmac.

Leah Jasmine Jones is 18 years old and likes singing, dancing and modelling and aspires to be a professional model in the near future. She is confident that she could be the 2014 Miss Guyana Talented Teen.

Felicia Sears is an 18-year-old who likes to dance and play basketball. She has enjoyed a bit of modelling. She is a past student of East Ruimveldt Secondary and sees herself in a career in the business field. Felicia has her eyes on the Miss Guyana Talented Teen crown, so she will be giving it her all come July 6.
is a 14-year-old student of Queen’s College who likes to dance and play the guitar. She feels that her chances of winning the crown are as good as any so she is working hard at becoming the next Miss Guyana Talented Teen.

Delroy Walcott is 19 years old and a student of St Rose’s High presently writing CAPE. He has his sights set on becoming a general surgeon. This sprinter loves performing dramatic poetry and enjoys soca. Watch him work hard to win the Mister Guyana Talented Teen crown.
Stephen Validum
This 19-year-old is a past student of Josel Academy who loves performing dramatic poetry and has a flair for designing. He is vying for a chance to represent Guyana as Mister Guyana Talented Teen on July 6.
Ja’Asriel Bishop is an 18-year-old who sees himself as a Psychologist in the future. He likes to sing, loves poetry, writing and acting. “J”, as he is commonly called, is working hard to win the Mister Talented Teen crown contest.
Lianna Williams is a 15-year-old student of North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School. A dancer, a steelpan player (pannist) and one who likes to play hockey.
Akeila Dey is a student of the Cyril Potter College of Education. She is an avid reader, listens to music and surfs the Internet. Her talent in the arts is drama and she thinks she can cop the Miss Guyana Talented Teen crown come July 6.
Meshach Anthony Howard is a student of Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School, West Bank Demerara. He is 15 years old and expresses himself through dance.
Desmond Fernandes is a student of St John’s College writing CXC presently. His first choice for a career is to become a Journalist. He also likes to take photographs and is versed in impromptu speaking. Desmond believes “life is what you give”. His performing talent is drama and he feels he has a great chance at the crown in the Mister Guyana Talented Teen contest.
Christian Pollard is a 19-year-old past student of East Ruimveldt Secondary who likes to read, surf the Internet and sing. He would like to study medicine but for now, his sights are set on the crown of the Mister Guyana Talented Teen 2014.
Daniel Ifill is 15 years old and attends Christ Church Secondary. He likes to read, swim and sing and hopes to become a singer. He is eager and is training hard to win the title on July 6.
Breana Nicholas is 15 years old and attends Tutorial High School. She wants to be a certified teacher and likes to sing. She thinks she has a chance at the Miss Guyana Talented Teen crown.
Kimberly Sattaur is an 18-year-old CAPE student of St Rose’s High School who likes to be expressive through dramatic poetry. Kimberly is a keen contender for the crown of the Miss Guyana Talented Teen Pageant.
Mikhail Rampersaud is 19 years old and a member of the National School of Dance. He likes to model and is currently a teacher of maths and dance and thinks he has a great chance of winning the Mister Guyana Talented Teen crown come July 6.
Mikel Andrews is 19 years old and holds a diploma in Theatre Arts. He acts, dances, swims and surfs the Internet. Mikel wants to start a career in journalism and intends to also be an entrepreneur. He is vying for a chance to represent Guyana at the Mister Guyana Talented Teen Pageant.
Inaugural Garage Bar on May 20
Karaoke enthusiasts can start sipping on their honey and extend their bathroom singing sessions in preparation for the “I Think I Can Sing” Carib Beersponsored Karaoke competition, which sings off at the Garage Bar and Grill located on Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt on Tuesday, May 20.
The competition is opened to persons 18 years and over and contestants will compete in male and female categories.
Manager of the Garage Bar and Grill, Eswick Northe said that he was driven to host the competition due to the large turnout out of fans for their usual Karaoke nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“They come out and really put their best into the songs they sing and one could
see the natural competition between them. This competition will offer them a chance to see who is best,” Northe said. The competition boasts $400,000 in cash and prizes inclusive of flatscreen telesions, music systems, mioven hampers, cellphones, and much more.
The males and females will be judged separately on each competition night. The top three finishers each night will qualify for the quarter final round. The rules state that if a person does not qualify on a given night, they can re-enter on the following night of competition.
For the preliminary round, persons will be required to submit their own selections, but once a song has been selected by a contestant, they and only they are allowed to perform that selection.
Registration is ongoing at the Garage and all that is required is that one purchases a six pack of Carib beer. The finals will be held on June 5, with the designated host being Kirk “Chow Pow” Jardine. So go on out with your crew and sing and win.

Vick Sarran, popularly known as “Selector Andy”, had his eyes fixed on becoming a deejay/selector at the age of six, when he started playing around with the radio during the days of audio cassettes.

Primo will over the weekend launch another tune that is expected to captivate the hearts of Guyanese, forcing them to ‘show love’ again.
“No More Love” hits airwaves today followed by the release of the video on Saturday. The song was written by the soca sensation and produced by Brian Roberts out of Honest Illusion, NY and the track was done by Ornie Winfall, a Guyanese who now resides in the United States of America.
The soca sensation explained that the world has lost the touch of expressing
and showing love to each other. Today, he added, persons are more interested in making money and power rather than spreading love.
“We have become beasts, become selfish and this will help us to love again by helping our neighbours, helping the less fortunate, helping people who are in need”.
“No Move Love” is close to his heart as he reminisced on the way his bother lost his life for the sake of money. As usual, he writes
these lyrics based on his personal experiences. He has been promoting the song in Canada, Jamaica, St Maartin and other Caribbean islands.

Taking a first glance at 26-year-old Roy Stewart would never for a moment reveal that he has a disability. A person listening to his dazzling, hair raising performance would never think that he is not bothered by that life changing condition. He is extremely talented.
He sings and manipulates the Saxophone well. His performances are so unique; they seize the attention of his audience, who later come to adore him with simple and childlike affection.
But the famous Roy Stewart, with stage name “Sweet Sax”, is legally blind. Born in Guyana and raised in neighbouring Suriname, Stewart was diagnosed with macular degeneration at a very tender age. According to him, he must have been born with the chronic eye disease which causes vision loss in the centre of the vision field.
But have it as you may, that disability in no way prevents the charming and bubbly Stewart from embracing his passion for music and his hope of achieving his goals of becoming a renowned performing artiste, a Pastor and Psychologist. The young man said he has learnt to accept and conquer his disability and has already prepared for the inevitable.
“If we treat life with a high spirit and a positive attitude, life will give us back that. But if we treat life so so, anyhow, don’t care, that’s what we will receive”,

Stewart said while speaking with Guyana Times Entertainment in an exclusive interview.
He said that he came to the realisation that he needed to develop a positive attitude in spite of his situation. He said, however, that there is something far greater than having a positive attitude that has kept him going; it is knowing a greater being.
“I have grown to love Jesus... Through my ups and my downs,
and through my downfalls, it’s because He is the breath of life,” Stewart said. His life off the stage is meant to represent the one that has moulded him into the man he is today.
He said his passion now lies in soothing hearts with melodies which he maintains “must send a message of hope and salvation”. Stewart is a Seventhday Adventist Christian who declares that “church life shaped and
moulded my character”.
“Sweet Sax” is no stranger to the stage. Since he began playing professionally close to seven years ago, he has played alongside renowned artistes from around the world; an experience he holds dear to his heart. He said he has developed his unique way of playing by simply listening to “the big cats” he said with a hearty laugh. He has played in and out of Guyana, at Ambassadors’
residences, carving his name in the annals of time. He has made many appearances at the National Cultural Centre, performing at many major events including weddings and other special functions.
Stewart told this publication that his love for “wind instruments” developed after a childhood friend brought a “unique instrument made of coconut branches to him”. “And that is where my wind instrument career started and from there I moved to the recorder (the flute)”.
He said he later fell in love with the saxophone, but was however unable to purchase one because of what he described as his “impoverished” situation at the time. He was later able to gather enough money to purchase his first (second hand) Saxophone and has since been creating quite a stir wherever he touches base.
Stewart finds inspiration from players such as the late Louis Armstrong and Kenny G, among others. And while his performances depend on the occasion, he finds pleasure performing gospel melodies.
Even with his disability, Stewart is on the move to advance his studies and is in the process of writing several subjects at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), which he hopes will brighten his future.

After the success of “Kai Po Che” (2013), director Abhishek Kapoor and UTV Motion Pictures have paired up again and are back with their next, “Fitoor”. The movie will see Rekha sharing screen space with actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Katrina Kaif for the very first time.
The film, to release in 2015, is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel,
Great Expectations. It explores love as an energy –free-flowing and not bound by rules. The movie depicts the relationship between three characters: a young Kashmiri boy named Noor (Aditya); his muse Firdaus (Katrina) and the mercu rial Begum (Rekha). It will be shot at various locations in north India, including Kashmir and Delhi, as well as an international destina

BKollywood actor-producer John Abraham, who is a self-confessed soccer fan, is all set to promote the upcoming FIFA World Cup in India.
The 41-year-old “Madras Café” star has been roped in by Sony Six for their campaign to build anticipation for the football tournament.
“It is a known fact that John shares a great deal of love and passion for the sport and it is through this partnership that we would like to build an ticipation for the upcoming FIFA event,” the channel said in a release on Thursday.

It was reported that Madhuri’s father was not happy with the relationship with Sanjay already being married to Richa Sharma. 23rd Annual Mother and Daughter Pageant thrilled the NCC
The 23rd annual Mother and Daughter pageant was held on Saturday evening at the National Cultural Centre and was filled with charm, elegance and sophistication. There was magic in the air as 22 mother and daughter teams vied for the coveted titles in three categories.
It was evident that the little princesses copped the audiences’ hearts as they took to the stage in style and sassiness. They gracefully flaunted their little outfits to a Rihanna tune that had the audience cheering. As they were joined by their mothers who were identically dressed, it was a sight to behold as they hugged and showed their love to the woman who brought them into this world.
The junior category was sponsored by Igloo Ice Cream and from the reaction of the audience; they got their money’s worth. Although the competition in this category was stiff, Renatha Exeter and her daughter Azaliyah emerged victorious while Tessa Pratt and Arianna took second place and Jennel Lynch Davis and Sade copped third place.
The Middle category, which was sponsored by Courts Furniture Store, was indeed mind blowing with some excellent designs that captivated the hearts of the audience. At the end, Sandra Johnson and Nokasy were crowned queens.
The mother and daughter duo looked spectacular in their tie-dyed outfits that added some flare to the event. They too, outpoured their love for each other as they made their way off stage.
The most impressive move of the evening was when Johnson opened her glittery pink lace bag and released several butterflies. Coming in second in this category was the Marguerita John-Deen and Tibina duo, while the third spot was secured by Urva Connel and Quianna.
As the mother and daughter team made their way off stage, the intermission break was taken but soon after, the elegant evening continued with the senior category.
The seven pairs of mothers and daughters appeared on stage as they moved to the sounds of Beyonce’s “XO.” While it was not anticipated, there were some hiccups and ner-
vousness among the contenders.
Nevertheless, this did not stop the mother and daughter teams who created a whirlwind which displayed maturity and at the same time, charisma. At the end, Felicia Geness and her daughter Katusha outshone their competitors.
In second position were Badyawattie Dindyal and Latita and coming in third was the duo of Carmel Williams and Leah.
The show was well put together by the promoters “Supa Stylistics” and would have seen several performances by popular local Guyanese artiste Calvin Burnett, among others. There was also a special appearance by Meritza Lord, a previous winner in the mother and daughter pageant.
During the competitive night, Fly Jamaica also gave away one ticket to a lucky member of the audience to a destination of their choice while GT&T also gave away one BlackBerry cellular phone. Another winner also won a treat at a salon and spa for a day.
Meet rising local model – Kimberly Sattaur
Eighteen-year-old Kimberly Sattaur believes that with hard work and determination, one is bound to excel at anything, especially achieving your dreams.
Currently, Sattaur is living one of her dreams, modelling, while pursuing another one. Despite only beginning modelling last year, it was her desire to be doing so ever since she was a young girl. “I think I was 10 when our village had a fashion show organised by the youth group which I was a part of, so from then I was intrigued with the idea of modelling.”
Last year, at the behest of her friend, she joined a modelling agency which got her jobs and her first being that of a brand ambassador for Limacol during the inaugural Limacol Caribbean Premier League (LCPL). This she said was exciting as she was given the opportunity to meet a lot of high ranking officials along with experiencing the hype of the game.
“I don’t really look at cricket but being there in person and witnessing it live was a great experience, especially cheering before such a massive crowd.”
Sattaur has worked in several other major events including the Guyana Fashion Weekend, which she spent two months preparing for. She said that it was a challenge, particularly keeping up with all the professionals, but with intense training, she was able to pull it off.
During this experience, she learnt that modelling takes a lot of disciplined. “We have to walk the ramp and make it look effortless but in reality, it’s a lot of work to master four/five routines for a show.”
While modelling is a passion of hers and she plans to expand her portfolio, Sattaur has her interest in a very different career path. She is currently a final year Six Form student at St Rose’s High School where she is studying law, a field she is very much interested in, however, while she wants to do criminal law, she also has an interest in journalism.
Sattaur’s advice for young people desirous of entering the modelling field is to never give up on their dreams and continue to work hard. “Nothing happens before its time… if you want it, just try do not be afraid to follow your dreams, you’re confined only to the walls you build yourself so don’t be afraid to chase your dreams.
Sattaur is one of the delegates of the Miss Guyana Talented Teen 2014 pageant.
