ichele Henderson, Dominica’s premier female vocalist who is known for her versatility and extreme talent will be the headlining act at this year’s Tribute to Father called “Jazz, Wine and Words” slated for the Theatre Guild, this Saturday evening.

Whether it’s in English, French or Creole; Zouk, R&B, Jazz, Reggae or Retro Soul, the accolades are consistent. No stranger to the entertainment scene in her native land of Dominica, Michele’s status as an all rounder – writer, flautist and vocalist, is growing by leaps and bounds throughout the Caribbean and further afield with every performance.

She has been featured in Caribbean magazines such as “She”, “Home Companion”, “Maco”, “Caribbean Beat” and “The Beat” and on regional television programmes such as Caribscope and E-zone. She was also featured in the international media including BET Jazz.

The host of the event, the Rotary Club of Stabroek will use the evening to honour fathers for their role in society. The importance of fatherhood in the nurturing and development of the child and by extension, the community will be highlighted at the event.

The event will be an all-inclusive affair where patrons will be treated to excellent music by top regional artistes supported by the best local talent. An offering of a selection of fine wines will set the mood for what will be a splendid evening of “Jazz, Wine and Words”.

The evening commences at 18:30h with the welcoming “wine hour” where by patrons will have the pleasure of viewing and sampling an array of wines served from specially erected kiosks tended by the major distributors of wines and liqueurs in Guyana.

Offerings of selected cheeses and grapes will complement the evening’s fare of wines.

The entertainment begins at 19:30h featuring the best of local talent interspersed with the extraordinary poetic styling of the group “WORDSMITHS” which includes Yaphet Jackman, Latoni Beaton and Randolph Critchlow.

Patrons will then enjoy more cocktails and fine wines during the intermission. The entertainment resumes with a grand performance by the sensational Michele Henderson who recently blazed the trail to win the Caricom Anthem competition out of over 50 regional participants.

Walcott is frequently involved in community public awareness programmes which entail tackling social issues with the aim of reducing the negative impacts.

This dauntless young man sees himself as an accomplished and successful medical practitioner within the next five years. He seeks to emulate US President Barack Obama, because Obama had proved that where there’s a will, there’s a way and so hard work, courage, consistency, and discipline collectively can enable persons to achieve any goal.

He expects to take each experience encountered in his pageant life as a ‘’lesson learnt’’ and so this will assist in cementing a building of hope for him in the future.

Delroy hopes to be the successor of Kefa Wesley Smith, last year’s Mr Guyana Talented Teen.

he Miss Guyana Universe Committee has confirmed that they are one step closer to narrowing down the list of applicants who have shown interest in becoming Guyana’s M i s s Universe representative later in the year.

T h e Committee is presently reviewing the applications and will soon shortlist the Miss G u y a n a Universe hopefuls.

The date for the local leg of the competition is yet to be fixed, but Guyana Times

Entertainment understands that the pageant will be held in September.

The winner of the competition will replace Katherina Roshana as Miss Guyana Universe to represent Guyana at the international pageant slated for later in the year.

Applicants have to be between the ages of 18 and 25 and should be five to six feet in height.

It was also necessary for applicants to have a copy of their birth certificate and be in possession of a valid Guyanese Passport.

All the applicants were also advised to include in their applications two references.

The crowned queen will not only get a chance to represent Guyana at the Miss Universe Pageant but also can win up to $3 million in cash, a three-week vacation in a foreign country and a four-year scholarship to the University of Guyana.

he “Tides of Susanburg” is here again!!! This iconic Guyanese radio serial then stageplay was written by one of Guyana’s most prolific Writers, Journalists and Television Personalities, Francis Quamina Farrier.

It is said to be the first Radio serial ever aired in Guyana and the entire Caribbean Region and was first aired in 1965 and then again in the 70s. In the past, persons would huddle together to listen to ‘one’ transistor radio.

One would recall at six o’clock in the country areas, children and adults alike would huddle around to hear what Yaya, or Mentore or Mrs Wharton was up to, or what they would do to June and Savitri and Mother Sobers ... or how much drunken Waldron would sell his daughter Carol for.

Uncle Francis, as Farrier is affectionately called, touched on a few of the social ills that were prevalent then, and they are still sticking out their ugly horns in today’s 21st century society.

The play will be recreated and staged by Senoj Creations under the directorship of Collette JonesChin.

The cast include “Mentore” being played by Henry Rodney; “Savitri” being played by Natasha Azeez; and “June Winters” played by Charisma JonesChin. Other popular actors selected for the presentation are LaVonne George, Keyon Heywood, Colleen Humphrey, and Collette Jones-Chin.

The play will be staged at the Theatre Guild on Friday, June 27, with a matinee performance beginning at 13:00h. And on June 28 and 29, evening performances begin at 19:00h.

During the first evening’s performance, Senoj Creations will be paying tribute to the following persons who were part of the first staging of “Tides of Susanburg” and most of whom we are fortunate to still have with us. These include Francis Quamina Farrier, Rosamund Addo, Hector Stoute and John Exeter.

“Kiss My ART 2K13” showcased local art of all kinds, in a format that was vibrant, exciting and attractive to all ages, but particularly to the young and young at heart.

The event saw a number of displays of photography, paintings, videography, textiles, jewellery, sculptures and so much more. Apart from the normal exhibits, there were several art pieces that were sold through silent auction.

There were also several other artsy activities that included a Bravo Arts bodyart performance, two happy hours featuring the best art-tenders, battles of the DJs, auto art, live glow drumming, fire acrobatics, spoken word poetry, steel panomania, silhouette dancing and much more.

uyanese-born American singer and rapper, Jay Anderson has been the latest addition slated to perform at the New York City Jamzone set for Ralph Avenue on August 9.

Jamzone Summer Break will be held in New York for the first time and it is expected to be a grand affair with live performances by the Gully God, Mavado; Soca sensation Skinny Fabulous; Timeka Marshall; X2 and others to be added.

The event will also feature Deejay Energy and Gully Ras from Fusion International, Deejay Bevaughn out of Stereo Sonic and Deejay Bank Hype from NY will also be there to do their stuff.

Anderson is not just a rapper, but rather prefers to embody the term ‘recording artiste’ in its entirety with influences such as Beres Hammond, Tupac Shakur, and Ghandi.

has never seen before. Thus far, he has had three radiotopping singles across South America, coupled with massive performances with headlining acts such as Rick Ross, Mr Vegas, and Busy Signal.

Aside from music, Anderson recently graduated from university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Law. The experimentation with the arts began to develop even before Jay was a teenager.

“Sometimes I feel as though music became interested in me… But music has been a part of me ever since I was about seven or eight years old. I performed at every concert at my primary school. I wrote a poem when I was 13 years old and turned it into a song, and from there, it became an on-going progress in my songwriting skills and before I knew it, it took me into these luxurious studios in New York City,” the artiste stated.

iss India Guyana Worldwide 2014, Divya Sieudarsan wings out to New York City to meet with the Guyanese community to build her fan base as part of her reign.

Sieudarsan will be getting the remaining things that she needs in New York and her final preparation before she leaves for Dubai soon to participate in Miss India Worldwide 2014 Pageant.

Divya and her chaperone, Director of Apsara, Chandini Rambalak were treated to the first-class experience, and the Queen best described her experience on TravelSpan Airlines as “royal treatment: food was delicious and the staff were very friendly… great experience overall…

I must say it was more enjoyable than tiring”.

Among other media appearances and events in Guyana, Sieudarsan was invited as Miss India Guyana 2014 along with Miss India Guyana 2013 Katherina Roshana as guests at the Europe Day Celebration hosted by the Ambassador Robert Kopecky at his residence.

he three delegates in the Guyana leg of the Jamzone Pageant are in fierce competition as the date draws closer to selecting the best candidate to represent Guyana at the international pageant in August.

Soyini Fraser, Faydeha King and Onesha Hutson were judged on the photo shoot in which they participated and the infomercial they produced as part of the Miss Guyana Jamzone reality show. The delegates were unveiled to the public on Sunday evening as the show premiered.

The second episode will be aired this Sunday with another part of the reality show titled, “Meet the Press”. This edition saw the delegates showcasing their intellectual skills as they answered several questions posed to them by three seasoned entertainment personnel at the Gravity Lounge on Tuesday afternoon.

They were tested on Guyana’s tourism and entertainment industry, how they can promote Guyana and Jamzone as a whole, and more importantly, how they can positively promote

pageantry in Guyana. The third segment of the reality show will take the form of a runway show, with the trio in heels and swimwear.

The recording of this segment will also be done at the Gravity Lounge which will see the three delegates revealing their feminine beauty to the public in designer swimsuits.

The final aspect of the reality show will take place on the night when the queen

will be crowned on June 21.

A show will be created and patrons will be interviewed with a view of garnering their opinion of the delegates and who they think is the most suitable contestant to represent Guyana at the pageant.

After the opinion pieces, the winner will be announced.

The grand finale of the reality show will be aired on June 29.

The Classique Dance Company is known to be one of Guyana’s most successful and well-known contemporary dance companies, founded in 2000 by dancer and choreographer Clive Prowell.

The company’s mission has since been to empower young people through dance and creative collaboration in the performing arts, building self-esteem and inspiring self-expressive community action.

The company has travelled throughout Guyana.

keem Kanhai also called “The Dream” or “AK” is 22 years old and was born at the Linden Hospital Complex to Michelle Plato and Romeo Kanhai.

His siblings are Shaquelle Plato, Surrell McDowell and Karim Robertson.

He described his childhood as adventurous but balanced. He says this balance is what is mostly responsible for the person he is today. He was the only member of an extended family that was of Indian descent. His family embraced him and loved him without discrimination of any kind; not even in the community and the entire community of Linden.

His family was well-grounded and his parents were strict with strong values that had to be adhered to, such as going to church every Sunday.

When these values were not adhered to, he and his siblings paid the price by being punished. He added that his family was not wealthy but all their needs were met and he is of the opinion that he could not have had a better childhood.

School days, he recounted, were great. He was able to balance his academics and sports at an early age, throughout his primary school life, but it became

challenging when he entered high school.

This talented basketball player attended the Amelia’s Ward Nursery and Primary School after which he was awarded a place at Mackenzie High School. He then studied at the University of Guyana.

Growing up in Linden, as children, he and his siblings were involved in many of the various sports. Each sport had a season. His older cousin, Neil Simon, who lived a few houses from him, had a basketball court where he would always go to watch the guys play.

His playing time, however, would be before, during or after their sessions.

After a while, Simon saw his interest in the sport and decided to teach him the fundamentals.

He was one of the many persons in his family to be a basketball player. His brother, Shaquelle Plato and other relatives –Simon, Audley Alleyne and Yannick Douglas – also played.

He chose basketball because he was much more talented on the court than in any other sport he participated in. He then focused on basketball where his passion and love for the game grew as he progressed in the sport.

Basketball, he told Guyana Times Entertainment, has been great to him thus far. It has taught him great life lessons that he still uses to govern many aspects of his life. More so, he had the opportunity to meet great people and see many places. As the journey continues, it’s only getting better as he develops and improves in the sport he loves.

In five years’ time, he sees himself furthering his talent in basketball overseas, specifically aiming at being semi-pro and ultimately a professional.

His greatest inspirations and role models are Elvira Plato, Michelle Plato, Neil Simon, Lugard Mohan, Kezqweyah Yisrael, Chris Bowman, Michael Jordan, Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James.

As it relates to basketball, he expects to be one of the top players in the country and eventually, the Caribbean.

“It will bring me no greater pleasure than for me to get paid for what I love doing most,” he added.

Furthermore, he hopes one day the sport will be recognised and treated with much more significance locally.

He noted that much developmental work is not being done at school and senior levels to promote the game. “This is evident in our performances against other countries. Our country has a rich basketball heritage with capable players that can rank us as a top Caribbean basketball team,” Kanhai said.

Kanhai has a number of achievements under his belt such as being a member of the junior national basketball team; winning multiple most valuable player (MVP) awards, scoring titles, most assists award, best defender award, and the list continues.

He is presently a senior member of

the national basketball team. He has also participated in the national schools athletics and the Under 20 high jump, and also played table tennis. Most recent, he was awarded the MVP of the Road to Mecca (finals) Tournament and Brusches Classic Tournament.

His favourite quotes are “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard” by Kevin Durant and “Love is playing each game as if it’s your last” by Michael Jordan.

His advice to young people who would want to be a part of the sport is “This sport will take you as far as you want to go. The skills and discipline that surround basketball are centred in everything we do. Set accomplishable goals and go after them. Be relentless and seek to continuously improve and better yourself.

ollywood actress and producer Dia Mirza will make her glorious presence felt at the Kids for Tigers camp initiative, to be held on June 14-15 at Pench, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh (MP).

The actress has been associated with the ‘Leave Me Alone’ campaign, an initiative by Sanctuary Asia and Save the Tiger for a while now. She has been vocal about the cause and believes that the tigers are an integral part of the ecosystem and help in completing the circle of life.

akistani singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s new album “Back 2 Love” was unveiled by Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

The album, launched on Monday, features 10 tracks inclusive of collaborations with Indian musicians, such as composer duo Salim-Sulaiman, and also a duet with singer Shreya Ghoshal, a statement said.

Bhatt and Khan had worked together in the former’s production ventures like “Kalyug” and “Blood Money”.

“Sushant, however, came around 18:00h, much after Abhishek and Aditya had left. There is no animosity between Abhishek

and Sushant, but the latter wanted to avoid interacting with the filmmaker,” a source said.

It may be pointed out here that Sushant, who made his debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s “Kai Po Che!”, walked out of his upcoming project, “Fitoor”, and now Aditya Kapur has been signed on for the same. In fact, Sushant had allotted his dates for “Fitoor”, but when its shoot got delayed, the actor had to let go of the film as it was clashing with another project, Shekhar Kapur’s “Paani”. iss United Nations, Guyanese beauty Soyini Fraser is once again in pageant mode and her eyes are set on becoming the next Miss Guyana Jamzone International.

As the competition kicked into high gear, Guyana Times Entertainment interviewed the former Miss United Nations who recapped her experience after winning the coveted title in Miami in 2012.

After winning the pageant, she was involved in several activities in performing her duties as queen. In April 2013, Diana Giglio, Model Manager at Profile Model Management in the United States invited her to grace the runway for their upcoming competition “The New Profile Model”.

he first-ever Mr Guyana International Pageant is expected to be one with a difference that will see young, energetic and muscular men competing in several competitions with the aim of being crowned Mr Guyana International 2014.

The pageant is being hosted with the aim boosting the morale of men, since it has been noted over the years, that there has been a decline in the morale of men – be it their involvement in rape, armed robberies, violence against women, and other social ills.

The pageant serves as an activity whereby men can become involved in music, movies, and fashion.

This event will have several high profile segments and will be aired by all local, Caribbean, and international media across the Diaspora.

Among the objectives of the pageant are: fostering the knowledge of participants about their responsibilities as men in society; encouraging men to take a stand in the fight against many

The first stop after that competition was Orlando, Florida for Fashion Week 2013. Before actually going to the event, she was required to travel to The Bahamas to crown the 2013 United Nations Royals.

This was one of her most memorable visits, since it was done in the week of her birthday. She arrived in Nassau on May 7 and went straight to work.

The final show was that weekend and the girls were in full pageant mode.

Six delegates all wanting to be the next Miss Bahamas United Nations, but only one would emerge as queen.

On Fraser’s birthday, May 8, the day started in an amazing way. She started out with breakfast downtown, a radio interview at Guardian Radio 96.9 with local singer Preston “Puzzle” Wallace; Eric Fox, a Temperament Development Counsellor; and Marcos Ambrister, Mr Teen United Nations 2012.

She was also an honoured guest at The Conch Shop on the beachfront where she had an amazing evening with pageant officials and the delegates of the pageant.

On the day of the pageant, she was part of the Little Miss Bahamas, where young girls between ages five and 10

years of age competed for the title.

That day was the costume parade and it was conducted in the form of a motorcade with all the girls dressing as their favourite princess from a movie or story.

On Coronation Night, the ladies compete for the right to be Miss Bahamas United Nations 2013. As the guest queen, Fraser hosted the night’s proceedings and crowned the new queen.

She said it was absolutely wonderful to have spent time working in The Bahamas, adding that it is an experience she will never forget. Not only did she meet the Miss Bahamas United Nations delegates, she also met and interacted with other queens.

After The Bahamas, she participated in the Orlando Fashion Week 2013. Being selected to walk the runway showcasing designs for six wellknown designers was an extreme privilege.

The night of the show was packed, the dressing rooms full of designers, models, stylists, and the team from Jkare House of Fashion.

Between Orlando Fashion Week and Tampa Bay Fashion Week, she worked with many photographers all over Florida, like Darryl Glover, Stephanie Ceglia, Stephen King, and Frederick Lewis, among others. She definitely had a blast challenging herself; mind, body and soul.

Getting to shoot with various photographers has given her the chance to adapt to different styles and techniques of photography as she learnt how to be diverse in front of the camera.

At Tampa Bay Fashion Week, she was selected for the second main show to walk for three designers, Rachna Suri who is the name behind Accessuri Collections, The International Academy of Design Technology and also Sherry.

“It was a great year spent doing the things that make me smile... charity, runway shows, photo shoots and travelling,” Fraser said as she reminisced.

From the humble labourers to the elite executives, all have a part to play in the social upliftment of our male gender.

The organiser of the pageant, Paul Burnette is calling on corporate Guyana and the business community to support the venture. The inaugural Mr Guyana International is scheduled to be launched on July 20 at Duke Lodge, Duke Street, Kingston, Georgetown.
