Regional security initiative puts major dent in Caribbean’s drug trade

R
egional stakeholders who ended a two-day review meeting in Guyana on Tuesday, have concluded that the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) has made a significant dent in cocaine smuggling
in the region. The U.S.-funded programme, since its launch in 2011, has expended to date, some US$263 million to conduct cocaine seizures across Caricom member states, training of police personnel, and
the provision of fast boats to help curtail maritime criminal activities among others. An additional US$60 million has been set aside to continue these and other activities during this (See full story on Pg 2) year.
