Lindeners fear backlash from hike in Mackenzie Bridge toll

ehicular operators and passengers are fearful of a domino effect following an increase in the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge toll.

Several car drivers in the town referred to as “hundred-dollar taxi” or “dollar cab” drivers are among scores of Lindeners who have begun to voice their concern.

The increase, which was put into effect from Monday, has sparked some concern among residents and vehicular operators alike, with some giving a thumbs up to the increase, while others fear a domino effect.

The toll for cars traversing the bridge has increased from $40-$60, while the cost for minibuses has also increased by $20, moving from $60-$80.

While varied toll increase adjustments have been made for other motor vehicles, minibus and car operators stationed at Linden claim they are the ones most affected, since they frequent the bridge more often.

In an attempt to make their voices heard, several “hundred dollar taxi” drivers commenced strike action over the increase on Monday and

Tuesday, refusing to ply their usual routes across the community, until ‘better systems are put in place at the bridge’.

As a result, passengers say they fear an increase in fares; however, some of the “dollar cab” drivers have indicated that they will not be increasing their $100 fare charges, but have agreed that improvements must be seen at the bridge.

Speaking with this newspaper, a minibus driver indicated that while he is not against the decision made for the increase, he wishes to see better operating systems put in place.

He said there are issues which need to be addressed, including the traffic lights which have been out of order for some time and problems with the wooden decking which is constantly under repair.

“At nights, we don’t even have any lights on at the bridge. I mean some of us don’t mind the increase, but let we see what happening with our money. We need to see our money going towards the betterment of the bridge.

Some residents of Linden have also expressed similar views.

Meanwhile, some are calling for several advancements including an upgrade to a more improved doublelane bridge.

“That bridge is old, the lights don’t even work.

Sometimes it’s a real mess when two vehicles get caught on the bridge at the same time. Most times nobody want to reverse to allow the other one to pass. When you study this bridge, I tell you, it does be really frustrating at times,” a car driver dis-

closed.

The Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge, which links both shores in the community, is partly managed by the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

NICIL is tasked with the responsibility of conducting constant repairs to the faulty wooden decking located at the centre.

Linden InterimManagement Committee (IMC) Chairman Orrin Gordon, who had initiated the first public proposal to have the tolls increased back in August, said the municipality is unable to afford the upkeep of the bridge; hence, the collaboration.

Diwali T

he ancient festival Diwali has several stories behind it, but all grounded in the messages of the “celebration of light over darkness” and “the triumph of good over evil”. In Guyana, on this auspicious occasion, these messages are preached with great fervour, at temples, schools and other functions.

The occasion, though a Hindu event, because of the celebrations of hope over despair, victory, love, peace and prosperity, is universal in appeal. It is for this reason the ancient festival is a bit more than just a Hindu celebration, as it is also a powerful unifying event.

And here in Guyana, it can be deemed a “celebration of togetherness over ingrained differences” even though the celebrations in most cases are temporary.

This positive trait is an indication that irrespective of differences, Guyanese at all levels can work together for the betterment of themselves, their families, communities and country, if they allow the light of knowledge to prevail over the darkness of ignorance.

What is noticeable is the lack of awakening of the inner light, which is akin to fog or mist in the mind, the resultant effect of which is an impediment to clear vision of elevated thinking and exalted action.

Hindus and non-Hindus alike must guard against these deterrents to progress, and Hindus, in particular, must seek refuge in the wisdom of their scriptures in overcoming these vices.

This is imperative in addressing the spiritual decline of their religion, and the maintenance of their culture.

More than 170 years ago, when their foreparents came to these shores from India, they were deemed "illiterate" and placed on the fringes of society, but yet they maintained their religion and culture against great odds.

It was an integral part of their lives, and they sought comfort to their distress and mistreatment in their spiritual system of beliefs, the virtues of which they imbibed mainly through oral traditions.

The highlight of the celebrations today is marked by a somewhat secular yet spectacular procession, which was instituted years ago.

This effort, which was in keeping with the spirit of the Hindu ancestors to sustain their religion, though commendable, faces the pressures of commercialisation.

So while it has gotten Hindus to better appreciate and to maintain their identity, efforts must be redoubled to transmit the spiritual values of Hinduism.

The latter is one of the cornerstones of the religion, really the oxygen for its survival and should be foremost among the work of all Hindu leaders.

The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha is worthy of high praise for its invaluable work in keeping the Indian culture alive, and it would be fair to say that Hindus should take it upon themselves to better understand and practise the virtues of their religion.

In this way, the Divine Light within will always be awakened, happiness will abound, arrogance and a sense of false importance will disappear and tranquillity of the mind will prevail.

The stories of Diwali encapsulate these teachings and also emphasise spiritual wealth over material wealth in the worship of Mother Lakshmi, the Divine Mother and bestower of wisdom and happiness.

Oftentimes, the Divine Mother is worshipped for material wealth, but in Hinduism, material wealth without spiritual discipline is the road to an arrogant and self-destructive life.

This is captured in the story of the Demon King Bali, who ignorantly mocked Lord Vishnu, who appeared before him as a dwarf, and was vanquished for his superciliousness.

So as we celebrate another Diwali, Hindus must take it upon themselves to be firm on their religion, but make every effort to shun arrogance and seek elevated knowledge.

And since the message of Diwali is universal in appeal, all Guyanese should seek to do the latter. In this way, we can truly celebrate the “Triumph of darkness over ignorance”.

President Donald Ramotar celebrated his 64th Birth Anniversary on Wednesday on the eve of Diwali. Much to his surprise, the Guyana Police Force Band held a simple but auspicious ceremony at his Office. The sounds of the steel band greeted him when he arrived at the Presidential Complex for duty on Wednesday. As greetings overflowed, the Guyana Police Force presented President Ramotar with a blue and white iced cake and another token of appreciation. In response, the President expressed gratitude, positing that he was pleased to be greeted by his favourite band. In his brief remarks, he promised to continue doing his best to meet the needs of the Guyanese people, creating a better life for all Guyana.

Kindle the light of love and hope Dear Editor, Diwali is a time for celebration, but it is also a time for reflection – a time when we must remember that there are always others less fortunate than ourselves. This holiday reminds us that we should commit ourselves to helping those in need. behalf of the On Humanitarian Mission of New Jersey Arya Samaj Mandir Inc, and its Guyana and Canadian Chapters, I am pleased to extend “Shubh Deepavali” greeting to all my Hindu brothers and sisters in Guyana and across the globe on the occasion of this joyous occasion.

At this time we must renew <<our>> commitment to kindness, to think of all those less fortunate individuals, especially all those who are sick, invalid, lonely, abused, and our seniors.

A significant event in the Hindu religious calendar, Deepavali celebrates prosperity and shower <<its>> light over darkness. On this very special occasion that is cherished and loved by many people across the world, Diwali is now celebrated by all communities in Guyana and across the globe.

It is a beautiful recognition; that light is something which is universal and important and significant for every one of us. A single “diya” or lamp holds infinite beauty and hope from within us. We need to kindle the light of hope from within our personalities so we can brighten ourselves and the people around us.

From time immemori-

al, Diwali has been a celebration of victory over evil or darkness and also symbolises the coming of a New Year. But if we think deeply, what is this darkness that we want to remove? How can we remove the darkness from within us? Where there is darkness, we need light and there is tremendous darkness with each one of us, so let us kindle the light from within us.

Light means to follow a virtuous path such that our thoughts are always pure; our words are sweet and peaceful and thus bring joy to the listeners. Also our actions are always beneficial first to ourselves and to others, as well as the environment. On this Diwali we need to pray and get rid of all the darkness from within our society and ourselves.

Darkness is when our thoughts are negative and when these thoughts are reflected in our words or actions, they bring hurt and sorrow to others at every step.

In reality, evil or darkness does not have an identity of its own – it exists due to a lack of goodness or light. Knowledge, power, and all that is pure are very real characteristics since they are part of us; perhaps hidden yet existing.

The Festival of Lights is the fight against evil forces and the creation of peace and happiness.

As we celebrate Diwali, its message is a reminder that we are the “Deepak”, that inner being, to have that experience of enlightenment. When the light of the

soul is lit, that fire brings light not only to my own life and my relationships, but also, to all the Deepaks that are in me and you.

When all the Deepaks and the souls are lit with love, truth, peace and respect, they create a rosary. In “Deepmala”, the rosary of Deepaks, the souls have been lit with the light of truth and we are able to bring optimism to ourselves, the people around us, and the whole world.

It is clear that the world contains a lot of darkness.

Every one of us are instruments that bring that light into this world of ours, so that we are able to move forward to a world that’s truly loving, harmonising and bringing peace.

So instead of celebrating Diwali, let us experience Diwali in positive ways.

As we clean our homes, let us clean our minds and intellects too. As we wear new clothes, let us also get rid of our old, unwanted, and disturbing habits of anger, jealousy and worries.

Let’s our new but original qualities of peace, love, bliss and happiness emerge.

Tonight, we will settle our old account books and begin new ones; simultaneously, let us settle our old karmic accounts, any unpleasant relationships and begin our relationships in a new, positive way. We are all aware of the pollution caused by firecrackers, but it is Diwali. We need to burn crackers, so why not burn all the crackers of evil characteristics within ourselves.

This burning will in fact

purify our minds and the environment. As we exchange sweets, let us also exchange meaningful sweet words, good wishes, and blessings. If we really experience Diwali, we will succeed in invoking (calling upon) Goddess Lakshmi.

Her name comes from the word, “laksh”, meaning “the goal”.

Experiencing Diwali will help us reach our ultimate goal of heavenly perfection – which Goddess Lakshmi stands for. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi is good, but what is even better is making the wealth of spiritual knowledge and qualities, a part of our life. A divine character alone can attain prosperity and peace.

In an attempt to be a unifying force, the devotions during Diwali will seek to encourage greater unity, amity and understanding.

“On this auspicious occasion of Diwali, let us pray for our leaders that they will confront the many challenges that are currently abounding in the society.

And even as Diwali is celebrated, we pray that Maha Lakshmi brings the true wealth of peace, health, happiness, and love to all of God’s creation. May the spirit of Diwali extinguish any darkness in every human personality and illuminate their souls with the light of God. Let us all burn like diyas – giving light and life to others, and then we can truly say that we are celebrating the “Festival of Light.”

The auspicious Guyanese Diwali motorcade light of Diwali in New York

Dear Editor, Greetings of peace to my dear Guyanese brothers and sisters. In the Hindu philosophy the light is referred to as divine and connotes a powerful meaning. This universal divine light symbolises an abundance of joy, truth, wisdom, love, peace, purity and harmony.

The light connects our souls to our original selves taking us to the righteous path of the Supreme Light or energy. When this happens, negativity is destroyed, humanity evolves and positive strength is drawn. This entire process helps each individual’s life to blossom with ease unto a beautiful path.

The lighting of the diya is a magnificent experience. The whole act of this lighting is an expression of purity, joy and happiness and has great significance. For example, the clay diya represents the human body.

The pouring of oil or ghee signifies the pouring in of knowledge which includes spiritual knowledge. Placing the cotton wick into the diya relates to steadfastness or willpower. The flame signifies the soul and the entire act of lighting the diya depicts how every individual’s life is being illuminated in a virtuous way.

The Cosmic Goddess of divinity regarded as Mother Lakshmi is represented as the Goddess of Light. She is unique, beautiful and is always a donor or giver. This Divine Mother gives continuous blessings and sometimes she is celebrated in various

forms like Mother Durga, Mother Lakshmi, Mother Saraswati or Mother Sita.

In festivals like Navratri and Diwali, the Cosmic Goddess is worshipped and in these seasons her luminous vibrations are at the highest peak. Many divine messages, pujas, satsanghs, chantings, meditation, singing of bhajans, and classical dances are being rendered.

These glorious opportunities come to rejuvenate, awaken, and purify our minds and heal our entire being and to remind us of our divine essence on earth.

The Goddess Mother Lakshmi is regarded as ‘mother’ because she is universal and is manifested as absolute energy. She is an embodiment of virtues and resides in every one of us. Our true Lakshmi is really a wealth of knowledge and a wealth of noble qualities and values. We are all part of the Goddess Mother Lakshmi.

Our journey on earth is a sacred one and we should try to enhance our true self with more of the Goddess Mother Lakshmi’s virtues. Every individual has the power to tap into their inner or true self to activate their natural existence.

There is a divine plan for all human beings and Goddess Mother Lakshmi is a powerful gateway to help us to realise our true purpose on Earth.

The feminine vibrations are very much potent in the Cosmic Goddess.

Therefore, we females are all part of the Goddess Mother Lakshmi’s divinity. Females

are powerful in a positive way.

They are supposed to be divine, pure, tender, beautiful, compassionate, content and gentle.

Unfortunately, many females underestimate themselves and do not recognise their sacred qualities, spiritual power and the Lakshmi that resides in them. Also, a lot of our young girls do not value, honour or cherish their entirety. It is important for all females to awaken their Shakti (divine powers) or wisdom and consciousness within them.

Today many young females find themselves getting involved in alcohol, drugs, teenage pregnancy and other destructive activities. Before this situation gets worse in our Hindu community, I suggest that our Hindu leaders play more pivotal roles in moulding our young ladies to realise their ascension pathway.

I know that we have competent Hindu leaders and trust that this Diwali message will help them to become even better change agents within our Hindu realm.

It is very important to build that connection with the Cosmic Goddess energy so that the light within each of us can continue to be illuminated dissolving all vices in our lives. I call upon everyone to recognise the pure meaning of Diwali and celebrate it with peace, love and unity.

Dear Editor, The Diwali motorcade kicked off at dusk on Saturday with a beautiful display of colour on Liberty Avenue in Richmond Hill, the heart of the IndoGuyanese community in America. The vehicles assembled near Liberty Avenue.

The parade was preceded by prayers and a concert at the Dr Cheddi Jagan Ground.

Vehicles were brightly decorated with colourful lights. The motorcade was led by Grand Marshall Pandit Chunellal Narine of Trimurti Mandir.

Other pandits and organisers as well as prominent community leaders joined in the procession. .

There was much revelry in the crowd and on the sidewalk to the music. There were singing and dancing performances as well as tassa drumming at the ground.

Bhojan and prasad were also served on the route and at the ground. Stores did brisk business with snacks and Diwali paraphernalia.

Diwali and Phagwah are the most celebrated festivals among Guyanese in Queens. They are the Guyanese favourite holidays with their distribution of food and entertainment

and fun. Guyanese usually come from various parts of the US and Canada to take in the free entertainment and the decorations – a sight to behold. There were hundreds on the parade route.

Participants said the motorcade brought back memories of celebrations back in Guyana or Trinidad or Suriname. As in Guyana, Diwali will be celebrated in NY today; it is given official recognition by the city with suspension of parking rules.

Saturday was a joyful evening of colourful display

of artwork in lights. The packed cultural programme at the Arya Samaj Ground entertained the large gathering on the cold evening that marked the coming of Winter.

The cultural performances were punctuated by presentations of political officials and greetings from leaders of organisations of the Hindu community.

Speakers implored the audience to live the message of Diwali – help the community to triumph over evil.

Queen in fundraiser to establish Probe confirms centre for domestic violence victims Marriott I workers dumped n a quest to establish a Domestic Violence Centre in Region Two, Miss Guyana World Rafieya Hussain would be hosting at Fund Raising Dinner at Palm Court come Saturday.

Since being crowned Miss Guyana World in May, Hussain has been successful in raising more than US$10, 000 to fulfil the promise made to the people of Guyana, particularly those in Region Two. Utilizing the funds received thus far, the reigning Queen has acquired the property to house the centre. This facility is being renovated but Hussain explained that an additional $3M is needed to complete the project.

The dinner she said is just the starting point to acquire the required funds. It will be held in Palm Court’s Private Dining Area from 19hr-23hrs at the cost of $4,500 for regular patrons while VIP tickets are being sold at $7000. Tickets can be uplifted from Oasis, Palm Court and Gizmos and Gadgets.

With the red carpet laid, the Queen said supporters of the worthy cause can expect a splendid evening with a wide range of Guyanese cuisines; coupled with live entertainment.

Domestic Violence remains a major problem not only in Guyana but across

the world. Through the establishment of the open door centre in Region Two, Miss Guyana World said victims of domestic violence would be offered the requisite assistance inclusive of counselling. Through the centre, women in particular would be empowered; giving them the opportunity to achievement the much needed independence they need to escape the hands of their abusers.

Through fund raising exercises, Miss World intends to keep the doors of the centre opened with the support from the Government

of Guyana and Regional Authorities. The centre is slated to be officially opened in February 2015.

In addition to her fund raising exercises, Hussain has been conducting a Domestic Violence School Campaign. The response she has been enormous with students actively participating in the fight to bring an end to Domestic Violence in Guyana.

Over the weekend, she visited Region Two to check on the progress of works on the building that will house a domestic abuse centre and also interacted with several Essequibians during Essequibo Night Exhibition and Fair.

The queen, who will be representing Guyana at the "Beauty with a Purpose" pageant in London December 2014, has begun her campaign and fundraising activity to support her platform Domestic Violence focusing on teen dating. During her visit to Essequibo Hussain spent two days at the outreach centre at Three Friends village assisting workers to renovate the building that was gifted by the Region Two Administration for her to help fight Domestic Violence.

The facility will also be used as a resource centre, providing much needed information and guidance to

persons who have suffered domestic violence. Seminars as well as workshops will also be facilitated in the building.

While on the site, Husain took time to lend a hand in the painting of the building and also in cleaning of the yard. She expressed appreciation for the progress that has been made so far in the renovation of the building. From the building site Hussain travelled to Lake Mainstay where she received training in Amerindian from Toshoa Fredericks Pearson.

Hussain will be performing an Amerindian dance as part of the Pageant in December 2014.

The highlight of Miss Husain's trip was her appearance at Essequibo Night. Miss Husain was part of the contingent that includes Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Ali Baksh, Regional chairman, Parmanand Persaud, Vice Chairman, Vishnu Samaroo and Regional Executive Officer Sunil Singh. Miss Husain spoke to gathering briefly and expressed her gratitude to be part of the festivities. She thanked Guyanese for all the love and support and encouraged businesses to join her campaign to make a difference for tomorrow's generation. Hussain won the title of Miss Guyana World on February 23 2014.

A

tlantic Hotel Inc (AHI), owner of the Georgetown Marriott Hotel Project, has conducted a preliminary inquiry into the dumping of waste oil into the Atlantic Ocean.

The inquiry was prompted by an article in another section of the media headlined “Marriott’s Chinese workers caught dumping drums of waste oil at seawall” .

In a statement, AHI said Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) is contracted by AHI for the design and construction of the hotel project.

According to AHI, SCG reported that labourers, without authorisation of SCG’s management, disposed of the contents of three barrels of cement retardant material, which were in storage pending removal from the site as

expired materials.

“AHI has instituted measures through its site administration to prevent the repetition of this occurrence and is fully cooperating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), whose team visited the site immediately following the publication of the report...”

AHI said the EPA will continue to further investigate this matter.

“The contractual agreement between AHI and SCG requires SCG to meet minimum LEED (US Green Building Council) certification standards before the hotel is taken over from the contractor. Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) USGBC certification is recognised across the globe as the premier mark of achievement in green building.”

hree contracts under the Guyana Solid Waste Management Improvement Project funded by the India-BrazilSouth Africa (IBSA) Trust Fund and the Government of Guyana were signed on Wednesday to the tune of US$96,262 (G$19.8 million).

Additionally, two mini-excavators valued US$108,737 (GY$22.4 million) were procured under the project to aid in solid waste removal in Georgetown, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

The multimillion-dollar contracts were signed in the presence of Local Government Minister Norman Whittaker, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Chisa Mikami, Indian High Commissioner Puran Mal Meena and Brazilian Ambassador to Guyana Lineu Pupo de Paula.

The first contract worth $14.42 million was awarded to STP Investments for the construction of a

tarmac at Annandale, Region Four.

The work includes the construction of a 250x15 bitumen surface market tarmac.

Dookie Construction Services was allocated $2.2 million for the construction of a sanitary block at Annandale.

The project includes construction of a four-chamber sanitary block inclusive of a kerb wall and retaining wall, among other particulars.

phasis on illegal street vending.

The objective is procuring appropriate management machinery and equipment for collection, transportation and disposal of waste to landfill sites, including compactor trucks, mini-excavators and garbage bins.

The second has to do with the expansion and rehabilitation of markets and market tarmacs with the aim of curbing illegal vending, while the third objective is raising public awareness on solid waste management. Additionally, the project allows for the procurement of 30 garbage disposal receptacles.

Minister Whittaker explained that street vending significantly contributes to garbage pollution; hence, the IBSA Project is designed to establish and rehabilitate markets and market tarmacs to attract vendors and simultaneously eradicate street vending. He said as the project advances, major emphasis will be placed on maintenance.

Teen beaten to death for allegedly stealing gold

A

teenager accused of stealing a quantity of gold and other items was on Tuesday beaten to death by a group of men at Konawaruk Backdam, Potaro, Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni).

The dead teenager was identified as Azad Potter, 17, of Lot 38 Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara.

Guyana Times was informed that the young man had been working at the mining camp for the past two weeks after he left his home for a repeat trip to the interior, but, on Monday, several workers accused him of stealing the gold, an iPad and a mobile phone.

The distraught father stated that he believes his son did not take the articles, although he revealed that his son had been involved in thefts before and he had warned him several times. He said he subsequently had a phone conversation with the young man who insisted that he was innocent.

The “boss man”, who was identified as Rudy from Land of Canaan, reportedly later called the family about 16:00h, and related the news of Potter’s death.

They’re all Opposition, aren’t they? Everyone with the slightest connection to Westminster politics knows about No-Confidence Motions. You’d think these two “seasoned” politicians – got to be 50 years of being in Parliament between them!! – would’ve picked up a thing or two, no??

From the mess these wankers have found themselves in on the issue, it’s clear that all these two impostors know are the WORDS – “no confidence”.

And they probably thought they referred to their psychological state of mind!! But even before we get to the motion, look at how they didn’t even know the ground rules for reconvening Parliament!! How in God’s name could they promise their supporters that the motion would be debated on October 16?? Not “sometime in October” or “when Parliament reconvenes” – but October 16!! Ramjattan, even let on – wink, wink - as to how he had some “secret” information!

This Eyewitness is reminded of the Irish theologian who calculated – with seeming exactitude – that the world was created on October 23, 4004 BC!! That’s today folks!!

The problem with Nagamootoo and Co was that October 16 came and went – and they still haven’t a clue as to when Parliament will convene.

But back to the No-Confidence Motion. Which Parliament won’t even get to when the Government decides to reconvene Parliament. Were Nagamootoo and Ramjattan really so naive to think that because the PNC said they “supported” the motion, they’d actually let the AFC trump them on an initiative?? Jeez!! They’re competing for the same set of votes, thank you!

GECOM’s Chairman warns against news manufacturing G ECOM’s Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally has strongly advised reporters not to yield to the temptation to manufacture news, saying they must dedicate their energies towards reporting it.

The Kaieteur News on a number of occasions has been accused of this malpractice, but has always denied the allegation levelled against it.

Dr Surujbally made the appeal at a recent two-day workshop on elections training for journalists organised by the Guyana Press Association (GPA) in collaboration with the High Commission of Canada.

The GECOM Chairman thanked the journalists who participated for making the special effort to be part of the profound learning experience.

He also thanked the GPA and the Canadian High Commission for collaborating on the initiative, and more so for inviting GECOM to be an active participant in the programme, which ensured a “cross-fertilisation of ideas”.

According to a release, journalists were asked by the Chairman to continue being good partners with GECOM, as it carries out its duties with integrity, fairly, justly and in an unbiased manner.

“The Chairman noting the attrition rate within the profession, also charged the many young journalists attending the workshop to stay in the profession and to continue developing and refining their journalistic skills, as they continue to advance their careers and the journalism profession in Guyana,”

Her presentation, GECOM said, succinctly outlined the constitutionality of the establishment of the elections body, originating from the Constitutional (Amendment) Act Number 2 of 2000, which repealed and re-enacted Article 161, thus investing GECOM with all the necessary powers for the preparation and administration of General and Regional Elections in Guyana.

Surinamese journalism and media academic Rachel van der Kooye, along with Press Association of Jamaica Executive, Byron Buckley, presented on “Press freedom and political reporting”.

They commenced with thorough definitions of press freedom, and freedom of speech/freedom of expression. Van der Kooye also clearly differentiated press freedom from freedom of expression, while examining the many threats to press

freedom currently existing in the world, as well as how journalists can use attributes of press freedom in political reporting to write more objective stories.

“Journalists were charged to develop a number of critical skills that can further enhance their journalistic abilities. Some of the essential competencies that journalists were asked to develop carefully were critical thinking skills, strong instincts for potential political stories, sharp writing skills, attention to detail and nuances of reporting, along with the ability to operate effectively in deadline situations.

Within this context, the need to hone the skill to thoroughly investigate and explore circumstances and emerging stories was emphasised, GECOM noted.

It said the very contested issue of self-regulation and whether it is necessary and what levels of it can be deemed acceptable, was discussed by Wesley Gibbings and Byron Buckley in their presentation “A framework

Attendance at Drama Festival disappointing – Director

T

he National Drama Festival will conclude on Monday following the performance of two schools and the competitors for the finals will be made known at a prize-giving ceremony to be announced shortly.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held at the National Cultural Centre.

Speaking to Guyana Times on Tuesday, Festival Director Collette Jones-Chin said the response from the public has been disappointing even though there has been an increase in the number of schools participating in the festival.

But nonetheless, she was optimistic that things will improve during the few days remaining.

The Director said there were new challenges this year, but assured that there will be no roll-over from last year as she contended the competition has been going smoothly thus far.

She is hoping to begin preparations for next year’s festival immediately on completion of the 2014 event so as to get interested groups more prepared to deliver high quality performances.

Jones-Chin related to Guyana Times that prior to the commencement of this year’s competition, an outreach training programme was held in several regions but a few groups dropped out.

She said early preparations will avoid a repeat of these hiccups next year.

On a different note, the Director said the quality of performance generally was satisfactory, but pointed out that there was room for improvement, including with the senior groups.

The festival is coordinated by the National School of Theatre Arts and Drama, which also has a group competing for the top prize.

Some 28 groups are participating in the festival, including

the New Opportunity Corps.

Thus far the plays “Shattered Dreams” from the Open Category and “What If ” from the Junior Category which have left the gathering spell-bound, appear to be among those that will be shortlisted for the finals.

The curtains will come down on Monday with performances from Annandale Secondary and the Berbice High School.

The prize-giving ceremony is expected to be held between October 31 and November 2.

Already, some 72 trophies have been secured for the presentation ceremony, and according to Jones-Chin, special prizes will also be given to best actors and actresses, among others.

The winning group, she said, will receive a cash prize of $1 million and $250,000 will be awarded to the winners of the smaller groups.

Unlike last year, the cheques for the winners are expected to be handed over to the winners on the night of the closing ceremony.

Guyana to get local version of “Little Champs” P

Bandhu made the disclosure at a pre-Diwali celebration held on Sunday at the Indian Monument Gardens, Camp and Church Streets, Georgetown.

oint Services Council Chairman and Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier General Mark Phillips on Tuesday presented eight of nine persons recognised by the Joint Services, with Awards for Excellence.

The presentation was made at the GDF Conference Room, Base Camp Ayanganna, Georgetown.

Receiving awards were GDF Lance Corporal Nicholas Richards; Guyana Police Force Corporal Karel Mars; Guyana Prison Service Superintendent Nicklon Elliot; Guyana Fire Service Leading Fireman Don Brandis; Amrita Ramnauth, Julissa Williams and Miriam Gaskin, and Dale De Mendonca.

The ninth recipient, Abigaile Hillman was unavoidably absent from the proceedings, but will receive her award subsequently.

Diwali is a celebratory festival. This festival commemorates the triumphant return of Lord Rama, his wife, Sita, and his brother from exile. The festival is characterized by great symbolism wherein families light their diyas and other lanterns to mark the conquest of good over evil and enlightenment over ignorance.

It is a time when Hindus de-clutter their lives of the things, both material and spiritual, that impede a closer relationship with the Divine. It is a time for Hindus to reaffirm, renew and reinvigorate their beliefs. It is also a time for deepening relationships within and between families. It is a time for sharing and a time for pujas.

On this Diwali 2014, I wish to remind all families of our special responsibili-

ties towards our children and especially of the need to instil in them that light of virtue. Let us do our part to ensure that our children keep on the path of virtue.

Let us teach them, by word and by example, the importance of being virtuous and to avoid being tempted or led astray by impure thoughts, images and acts.

Clear need for peace, stability – APNU

Partnership for National Unity (APNU) said there is a clear need for peace and stability as the country celebrates another Diwali.

In a message to mark the occasion, APNU said of the various Hindu festivals, Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, enlivens all, young and old, men and women, rich and poor, in towns and communities throughout Guyana. It is especially a unifying and integrating force, diffusing goodwill, joy and cheer, it brings all people together.

The religious significance of this festival is particularly illuminating. The Goddess Maha Lakshmi, the Goddess of Light, is worshipped for wealth and spiritual enlightenment. But, alas, the light in our beloved country is only flickering. Literally and metaphorically, the light and spirit of this nation are fast disap-

pearing. With increased corruption, violent crime and a rising sense of hopelessness, the Guyanese nation sees the light disappearing around them. They sense a gathering storm is at hand, as the human spirit of this nation becomes sullen and depressed This year’s observances are occurring at a very important moment in the history of the nation when there is a clear need for peace, understanding and stability. These values are common to all the religions in Guyana and assume particular significance in respect of the Deepavali celebrations. Pray for each other – AFC urges in Diwali message

n the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the Alliance For Change (AFC) extends greetings to all Hindus.

This is a time of great religious significance in the Hindu calendar commemorating the return of Lord Rama after he had spent 14 years in exile, the party said in a message.

he Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) extends Shubh Diwali greetings to the entire nation, especially our Hindu brothers and sisters. Deepawali or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals. he Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG), the majority grouping of Guyanese workers, among them thousands of Hindus, joins that community and indeed these days the entire nation as the Festival of Lights – Diwali – is celebrated countrywide.

From Corentyne to Charity, from Linden to Lethem and the hinterland, earthen diyas shine their little long-lasting lights in the darkest, moonless nights. Research shows that Diwali was started to celebrate harvests in rural India. The festival, it is indicated is celebrated on the 15 day in the dark half of Kartik (October/November).

It is rich in symbolism as light represents triumph over all that is evil – inclusive of ignorance, disease, poverty and all things negative to human existence. FITUG is attracted to quote from the poet, Khalil Gibram: “Do not let the Candle of Wisdom die out in

the darkness of lust and error.

For the wise man approaches with his torch to light up the path of mankind.”

Guyana needs persons, policies and leaders to be beacons and lighthouses of illumination leading our challenged society to progress in all its aspects. Today, it might be relatively easy to identify those in leadership and decision-making positions – from Parliament to Boardrooms to workplaces who are agents of darkness and violators of development. Criticism is healthy when it is constructive. Protest is empty when no alternatives are viable or even offered.

The Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity (Light) beams her spiritual illumination for all to enjoy. May her spirit inspire us, during the 2014 Diwali observances, to seek and demonstrate wisdom and vitality, strength and understanding to compromise for peace, stability and sustained progress.

Diwali is for a new beginning...

Dispelling darkness and dedicating self to progress

he time of Diwali is one of the most festive and beautiful times of the year.

Diwali literally means a “Row of Lights”. It is a time filled with light and love; a time when Hindus all over the world rejoice. Diwali is celebrated on the 13th/14th day in the dark half of Kartik (October-November); it is also known as Krishna Chaturdashi. It is the darkest night of the darkest period, yet it is a celebration of light! Diwali is heralded as the triumph of good over evil.

The meanings of Diwali, its symbols and rituals, and the reasons for celebration are innumerable. Diwali celebrates Lord Rama’s glorious and long-awaited return to his Kingdom of Ayodhya after his 14 long years of exile in the forests.

It commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakaasura who had kidnapped and terrorised the gopis of

was conquered by Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu appeared to the demon king Bali in the form of a dwarf and requested only three steps of land. Additionally, Diwali is the holy time in which we offer our prayers to Maha Lakshmi and we worship Her with piety and devotion. Maha Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, bestowing these abundantly upon her devotees.

Diwali is also associated with the story of the fall of Bali – a demon king who

Diwali as Celebration of Light There are three main aspects of this holiday called Diwali.

The first is the celebration of light. We line our homes and streets with lanterns; we explode fireworks; children play with sparklers.

However, Diwali is not a festival of light in order that we may burn candles, fireworks and sparklers. Sure, these are wonderful ways of expressing our gaiety. But, they are not the only or true meaning of “light”.

Diwali is a festival of the light which dispels the darkness of our ignorance; it is a festival of the light which shows us the way on our journey through life. The purpose is not to glorify the light of the candle, or the light of the firecracker. The purpose is to glorify the light of God. It is He who bestows the real light, the everlasting light upon the darkness of this mundane world. A candle burns out.

A firework is a momentary visual experience.

But, the candle of a still

mind and the fireworks of a heart filled with bhakti (devotion to God) are divine and eternal; these are what we should be celebrating.

We decorate our homes with lanterns; but why?

What is the symbolism behind that? Those lanterns signify God’s light, penetrating through the ignorance and sin of our daily lives. They signify the divine light, shining its way through this mundane world. A home bathed in light is a home in which anger,

pain, and ignorance are being dispelled; it is a home that is calling to God. However, too many people turn this into a domestic beauty contest, spending days and a great deal of money to purchase the newest

diyas, the most beautiful candles. “We had 75 candles burning last night,” we gloat. This is only the light of glamour. It is not the light of God, and thus the true meaning of the holiday is lost…

The light of Diwali should be within us. It should symbolise the personal relationship between God and our families. It should not be so we attract attention from passing cars, or so we are the envy of the neighbourhood. Let the light penetrate inward, for only there will it have lasting ben-

efit. One piece of cotton soaked in ghee, lit with a pure heart, a conscious mind and an earnest desire to be free from ignorance is far “brighter” than 100 fashion deepaks, lit in simple unconscious revelry.

Diwali as a Fresh Start Diwali also marks the new year. For some, the day of Diwali itself is the first day of the new year, and for others the new year’s day is the day following Diwali. But, for all, this season is one of heralding in the New Year.

In the joyous mood of this season, we clean our homes, our offices, our rooms, letting the light of Diwali enter all the corners of our lives. We begin new chequebooks, diaries and calendars.

It is a day of “starting fresh.”

On this day we clean every room of the house; we dust every corner of the garage, we sweep behind bookshelves, vacuum under beds and empty out cabinets. But, what about our hearts?

When was the last time we swept out our hearts?

When did we last empty them of all the dirt and garbage that have accumulated throughout our lives?

That is the real cleaning we must do. That is the real meaning of “starting fresh”. We must clean out our hearts, ridding them of dark-

ness and bitterness; we must make them clean and sparkling places for God to live. We must be as thorough with ourselves as we are with our homes. Are there any dark corners in our hearts we have avoided for so long? Are we simply “sweeping all the dirt under the rug”? God sees all and knows all.

He knows what is behind

every wall of our hearts, what is swept into every corner, and what is hidden under every rug.

Let us truly clean out our hearts; let us rid ourselves of the grudges, pain, and anger that clutter our ability to love freely. Let us empty out every nook and cranny, so that His divine light can shine throughout. turn to page 20

Additionally, on Diwali, we begin a new chequebook; we put last year’s accounts to rest.

But, what about our own balance sheets? When was the last time we assessed our minuses and pluses, our strengths and our weaknesses, our good deeds and selfish deeds?

How many years’ worth of grudges and bitterness and pain have we left unchecked?

A good businessman always checks his balance sheet: how much he spent, how much he earned. A good teacher always checks the progress of her students: how many are passing, how many are failing. And they assess themselves accordingly: “Am I a good businessman?”; “Am I a good teacher?” In the same way, we must assess the balance sheets of our lives. Look at the last year. Where do we stand?

How many people did we hurt? How many did we heal? How many times did we lose our temper? How many times did we give more than we received?

Then, just as we give our past chequebooks and the first cheque of our new one to God, let us give all our minus and plus points to Him. He is the one responsible for all our good

deeds. And our bad ones are due only to ignorance.

So, let us turn everything over to Him, putting our strengths, our weaknesses, our wins and our losses at His holy feet. And then, let us start afresh, with a new book, unadulterated by old grudges and bitterness.

Diwali as worshipping Maha Lakshmi The third, and perhaps most important, aspect of Diwali is the worship of Maha Lakshmi. Maha Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, bestowing these abundantly upon her devotees. On Diwali we pray to her for prosperity; we ask her to lavish us with her blessings. However, what sort of prosperity are we praying for? All too often, we infer wealth to mean money, possessions, material pleasures. This is NOT the true wealth in life; this is not what makes us prosperous. There is almost no correlation between the amount of money we earn, the number of possessions we buy and our sense of inner bliss and prosperity.

On Diwali, we must pray to Maha Lakshmi to bestow real prosperity upon us, the prosperity that brings light to

our lives and sparkle to our eyes. We must pray for an abundance of faith, not money; we must pray for success in our spiritual lives, not a promotion

worship only her most prominent of aspects – that of bestowing prosperity upon her devotees.

However, she is a multifaceted goddess, filled

at work; we must pray for the love of God, not the love of the beautiful girl (or boy) in our class.

There is another point about Maha Lakshmi that is important. We tend to

with symbols of great importance. As we worship her, let us look more deeply at her divine aspects. First, according to our scriptures, she is the divine partner of Lord

Vishnu. In Hindu tradition, there is almost always a pair – a male and a female manifestation of the Divine, and they play interdependent roles. In this way, it is said that Maha Lakshmi provides Lord Vishnu with the wealth necessary in order to sustain life. He sustains, but through the wealth she provides.

Therefore, in its highest meaning, Maha Lakshmi provides wealth for sustenance, not for indulgence. Our material wealth and prosperity should only sustain us, giving us that which is necessary to preserve our lives. All surplus should be used for humanitarian causes. She does not give wealth so that we may become fat and lazy; yet, that is what we tend to do with the wealth we receive. Let us remember that Maha Lakshmi’s material wealth is meant for sustenance and preservation, not for luxury and decadence.

Additionally, we worship Maha Lakshmi who is the divine symbol of purity and chastity. Yet, in our celebration of her, we frequently indulge in frivolity and hedonism. How can we worship her while engaging in the opposite of what she represents?

We must re-assess how we pay tribute to this holy Goddess!

Work for Success The last point I want to mention is that she is typically portrayed wearing red.

What does this mean? Red is the colour of action, and she is the goddess of prosperity.

This means that in order to obtain the true prosperity in life, we must engage in the action. Most people think that in order to be spiritual, or to obtain “spiritual prosperity” one must be sitting in lotus posture in the Himalayas. This is not the only way. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches about Karma Yoga, about serving God by doing your duty. We must engage ourselves in active, good service; that is truly the way to be with Him. So, on this holy day, let us fill our entire beings with the light of God. Let us clean out our minds and hearts, making a true “fresh start”. Let us pray to Maha Lakshmi to bestow the divine gifts of faith, purity and devotion upon us.

With those, we will always be always rich, always prosperous, and always fulfilled.

Let us celebrate Diwali this year as a true “holy day”, not only as another frivolous “holiday.” (Swami Chidanand Saraswati)

Glenn Lall’s alleged threats to Sattaur:

mbattled Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall will soon know whether or not he will be formally slapped with using threatening language against Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner General Khurshid Sattaur, as the Director of Public Prosecutions Shalimar Ali-Hack is soon expected to make her recommendations in the matter.

The file was initially sent to the DPP chambers on October 14 and returned to Crime Chief Leslie James on October 15.

Based on reports received, the DPP would have returned the file to the Police requesting clarifications on several aspects of the allegations. The Police, on the other hand, would have in-

I would only hope that the DPP would act very swiftly in having whatever advice should be given to the Police on the report I made ... Georgetown, Demerara, a place in the Georgetown Magisterial District, they made and subscribed to false declarations on two Lexus LX 570 motor vehicles to be US$44,158 respectively, contrary to Section 217 (1a) of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01.

They were also slapped with two counts of aiding and abetting in a conspiracy to defraud the Government of due taxes.

Ebola in West Africa: Cuba Press freedom in the Americas leads way on medical effort has worsened, says watchdog

uba has sent a second group of medical staff to West Africa to help fight the Ebola outbreak.

The 83 doctors and nurses will treat Ebola patients in Liberia and Guinea.

Another contingent of 165 Cuban healthcare professionals travelled to Sierra Leone a few weeks ago.

Cuba is now the biggest single provider of healthcare workers to the Ebola crisis in West Africa, more than the Red Cross or richer nations, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.

“Cuba has provided the numbers and the people,” said Jose Luis Di Fabio, the WHO representative on the Caribbean island.

“There are more human resources from Cuba than from many, many NGOs [Non-Governmental Organisations] put together.”

The epidemic has killed more than 4500 people in West Africa.

The Red Cross, which is trying to tackle Ebola in Sierra Leone, has said the scale of the outbreak is so bad that it is having to retrieve more than 100 corpses a day.

he two candidates in Brazil’s presidential election runoff on Sunday grew up just seven blocks apart, attending the same elite tennis club, watching movies at the same theatre and strolling through the same leafy plazas during the 1960s.

Petrotrin exposed T&T to Ebola – Union

ilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) President General Ancel Roget said that Petrotrin could have possibly exposed the country to the Ebola virus as no medical officer screened the crew aboard the Overseas Yellowstone crude oil tanker on Monday.

Despite Health Minister, Dr Fuad Khan saying medical personnel gave the vessel a “clean bill of health”, at a press conference on Tuesday Roget claimed it was a port

officer at Petrotrin’s Pointea-Pierre Port who boarded the vessel for 20 minutes and relied on information given by the crew.

The Overseas Yellowstone, which bears the Republic of Marshall Islands’ flag, remained moored off Pointe-a-Pierre Tuesday.

Port workers have refused to berth the vessel, which is delivering approximately 750,000 barrels of crude oil to Petrotrin, because it came from Gabon,

near the West African countries which are plagued by the Ebola virus.

Although Gabon is not on T&T’s watch list for the virus, Roget said ships often bunkered at sea and that was where crews could contract the virus.

Parliament gun attack Ebola: WHO emergency team shakes Canadian capital holds talks on travel curbs

olice in Ottawa say they are searching for more than one gunman after a Canadian soldier was shot and wounded at the national war memorial before an apparent exchange of fire inside the nearby Parliament.

Police said they were called at 9:52h local time on Wednesday with a report of shots fired at the memorial.

Paramedics said they attended to a uniformed soldier, who was then taken to hospital.

At least one gunman then moved to nearby Parliament Hill. Video obtained by Canada's Globe and Mail showed police moving through the Parliament buildings before multiple shots were heard in an apparent exchange of gunfire.

A Globe reporter inside Parliament told Al Jazeera that a body was seen on the ground after the gunfire, although the casualty was not confirmed.

Prime Minister hails UN as symbol of peace P

rime Minister Samuel Hinds has described the United Nations (UN) as a symbol of peace and security as Guyana joined member states the world over in observance of UN Day on Tuesday.

Speaking at a reception at the Georgetown Club, the Prime Minister said the international body should be proud of its services to humanity.

“The United Nations must be justly proud of its accomplishments over the past seven decades as it has served to not only save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, but more importantly, promoted and pursued the development of human kind.”

However, the Prime Minister Hinds cautioned that more still needs to be done as “the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have not been universally achieved and even as we analyse the reasons… we are looking towards other mechanisms beyond 2015 through the articulation of a comprehensive Post-2015 Development Agenda.”

Nevertheless, the Prime Minister declared that Guyana is still “supportive of a United Nations that promotes international peace and security and a development agenda that benefits all”.

UN Representative to Guyana Khadija Musa acknowledged that the UN has “been the subject of much debate” over the years, but contended that

nothing is ever perfect and things can always be done better.

Even so, she quoted former UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld who said, “The UN was not created to take humanity to heaven but save it from hell”.

Thus, she said, the UN is not in a position to dictate to states, but it can “work with partners to improve nutrition security and promote dialogue and improved Government planning…”

The UN representative informed the invitees at the reception that the MDGs are a blueprint for all countries and though it has not been reached, much has still been achieved, particularly in Guyana.

At the forum, several entities were awarded.

UNAIDS Country Director Robert Campos notified the invitees of the criteria for the MDG awards.

He shared that the nominees had to be organisations based in Guyana or working in Guyana and not employed by the UN. Criteria Campos also indicated that nominees must have attained high performance in a specific category within the MDG, great accomplishment within the past and previous years in the specific MDG and must have the highest ethical standard.

The award for contributions to MDG 1 was given to St Francis Xavier Community Developers for their work in decreasing hunger and poverty across Guyana.

The Guyana Society for the Blind won the award for the organisation that supported the achievement of MDG 2, Universal Primary Education as they have encouraged learning of Braille and Computer Science for the blind, which has promoted student empowerment.

Ryan Gonsalves, Captain of Guyana’s Rugby Team, also presented an award to the Mibicuri Community Developers (MCD) for contributing to MDG 3. The group has been advocating and training women to recognise their rights and responsibility in today’s society.

The Linden Hospital Complex won the award for contributing to MDG 5 as it has made great strides in reducing the number of maternal deaths between 2012 and 2014.

Impact, a group involved in youth development and empowerment received a Special Award while a Surprise Award went to the United Nations Association for Guyana (UNAG).

In 1947, the UN General Assembly declared October 24, the anniversary of the Charter of the UN, as which “shall be devoted to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the UN and to gaining their support for” its work.

In 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted a further resolution (UN Resolution 2782) declaring that UN Day shall be an international holiday and recommended that it should be observed as a public holiday by all UN member states.

UN Day is devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the UN. UN Day is part of UN Week, which runs from October 20 to 26.

UN Day has traditionally been marked throughout the world with meetings, discussions and exhibits about the achievements and goals of the organisation.

UN Day is October 24, but the observance in Guyana was celebrated a few days earlier.

Police pilloried for “shoddy” probe into Rodney killing

T

he Guyana Police Force (GPF) of the 1980s was on Wednesday severely criticised for its inefficiency in carrying out its duties particularly with regard to the investigation into the killing of Dr Walter Rodney.

The gaps ranged from the failure of the Special Branch Unit, which was working in concert with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to take into consideration the first-hand testimony provided by the only known witness to the June 13, 1980 explosion, Donald Rodney and use it to speedily apprehend the alleged assassin – former army electronics expert William Gregory Smith, to the failure of the Police to safely keep the clothing worn by Dr Rodney for evidence.

All these loopholes in the investigation had caused an “innocent man” as it was implied to be charged for a crime he did not commit. At the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry, Crime Chief Leslie James said that while the Police back in 1980 did carry out investigations into Dr Rodney’s death, they may not have been efficient in the execution of their duties.

James was at the time under cross-examination by the Attorney representing the interest of Donald Rodney, Keith Scotland.

Perusing the statement given by Donald Rodney and the 1980 files provided by the Police Force’s CID, Scotland said that the Special Branch Police had failed to hand over the first-hand information provided by Donald Rodney to the CID. And despite his testimony that it was the former Army Sergeant Gregory Smith who had handed over the explosive device hidden in a bomb, Donald Rodney was still charged and placed before the court.

Donald Rodney had claimed that on the evening of June 13, 1980, he went to the home of Gregory Smith on behalf of his older brother

Walter. On opening his door, Smith appeared to be “surprised” to see him (Donald) there, Dr Rodney’s brother had explained. Scotland pressed and the Crime Chief agreed that that “surprise” could only suggest that Smith did not expect to see Donald Rodney that evening, confirming the earlier testimony by Rodney’s wife Patricia, that Donald was not part of the meeting plan that night.

Scotland asked the Crime Chief to use his expertise as an investigating officer within the Force and give a probable explanation as to why the Police, after receiving the evidence of Donald, made no effort to arrest Gregory Smith.

Attempts at formal arrest in 1996 James responded that he could not say, but as far as his perusal had taken him, there were some efforts by the Police to apprehend Gregory Smith days after the incident. There are reports that the Police had gone to the home of Smith in Russell Street, Georgetown, and his childhood home of Kwakwani, Berbice River, seeking him out. It was reported too that an attempt at a formal arrest was, however, only sought n 1996, while Smith was living outside Guyana.

Another incident noted was the raid carried out on the office of Smith’s alleged girlfriend Joan Melville, whose drawer at work was invaded in search of his picture which she kept with her there. The Crime Chief had suggested that among other things, the Police could have been searching for the photograph to seek the public’s assistance in locating him.

James maintained that efforts to apprehend Smith were made, but he could not say when they were first made.

Fishing vessel sinks after collision at Pomeroon

A

fishing vessel “Lady Pinky” sank off the coast of Guyana in the Pomeroon River last Saturday after colliding with an unidentified vessel.

According to the Maritime Administration Department MARAD it has been reported that on Monday at approximately 02:30 hours, an unidentified vessel heading in the general direction of Georgetown collided with the Fishing Vessel “Lady Pinky” off the coast of Guyana in the Pomeroon area.

The “Lady Pinky” was

reportedly anchored in the area when it was struck by the other vessel.

It subsequently sank, but all four of its crew members used their lifesaving equipment which kept them afloat until they were rescued in the evening by another fishing vessel.

They were subsequently transferred to another vessel which brought them into Port Georgetown on Monday. Officers from MARAD are trying to locate the unidentified vessel and an investigation has been launched.

he Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha celebrated its 40th Anniversary in grand style on Wednesday evening as it hosted its 40th Edition of the Annual Diwali Motorcade, which saw thousands lining the routes to get a glimpse of the well-illuminated and unique floats as they passed by.

The 25 floats moved west along Campbell Avenue into Sandy Babb Street, north into JB Singh Road and east onto Seawall Road to the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Community Centre Ground for a packed cultural programme and later the judging

of the floats.

The floats came from West Berbice, the West Coast and West Bank of Demerara, the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara and Georgetown. They were excellently designed with representations of Mother Lakshmi and scenes from the Scriptures, a kaleidoscope of lights and devotional music.

In excess of $3.5 million in cash and trophies were presented to the winning floats in the small, large and commercial categories. Prizes were also given for the most outstanding mandirs in each catego-

ry and for the best designed float overall. Over the years, Edward B Beharry has walked away with the best designed commercial float and this year around, it is hoping to retain the title. Also in this category as well is the Beepat and Sons float and from all indications, that company too is optimistic of copping the grand prize in that category. The judging criteria for the motorcade include: illumination along with originality, creativity and innovation for 25 points each.

Williams improved in the second set, carving out six break points, but Halep saved them all on the way to sealing the convincing win.

“My forehand was off today again. I guess it went on an early vacation,” added Williams, who said she had served better “in the 10 and under division in juniors”.

Williams, who withdrew from the China Open this month with a knee problem, credited Halep’s performance and said fitness had nothing to do with her loss.

“I think Simona played really well,” she said.

Hemnarine, the eldest of four brothers who represented Guyana at various levels, will be making his first appearance for the side even though he is cur-

rently residing in Canada.

His other two brothers are Sewnarine, who played for West Indies in both Test and One-day Internationals, and the youngest, Harrienarine, who featured for Guyana at the Under-19 level.

Ramnarine, who now lives in the U.S.A., is a former Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) player in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Four-day and Super50 tournaments.

He is currently at the helm of the South Florida

team and is optimistic they can capture the trophy and prizes at stake in the Open 20-over category.

“I think we have a very experienced line-up to compete well in the muchhyped up tournament; the preparations [are] going on smoothly and every player seems pumped-up too to do well,” Ramnarine related.

Former Guyana and West Indies youth player Zamal Khan is expected to play a big role in the Land of Many Waters, his country of birth.

Ramnarine believes he has got the right temperament in this version of the game.

“Certainly, Zamal is a natural talented cricketer and his experience is indeed vital for our team making progress and creating a good impression in Guyana,” declared the 27-year-old right-handed Ramnarine.

He added: “Both Zamal and Hemnarine are capable of producing excellent performances down in Guyana because they

have played lots of softball cricket over the years, and as I said, their experience is great as well.”

M e a n w h i l e , Hemnarine, in an invited comment, stated that he is anxious to be part of the squad and will definitely maximise on the opportunity in Guyana and subsequently help his team to come out on top.

“Well, we can win the tournament once we play to the best of our ability; I am grateful for the chance to play in Guyana again. I

know plenty players and teams are eager to do well too, but I think the better side will come on top,” Hemnarine declared.

Preparation in advanced stage for BLUTC horse race meet W

ith the Bush Lot United Turf Club (BLUTC) currently under a massive rehabilitation programme, systems have been put in place for the club’s horse- race meet scheduled for November 16 at the club’s Sea View Park in Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.

In an invited comment on Wednesday, coordinator Lakeram Sukhdeo said that the entire structure is being rehabilitated or given a face lift as the authorities continue in their quest to make it the best for horseracing in the country.

Meanwhile, Sukhdeo further indicated that organisers have put together an impressive eightrace programme with all the big names set to be on show for what is expected to be a competitive day of racing.

Britain’s number one won 6-3 6-3 after taking a wild card into the event as he bids to qualify for the end-of-season World Tour Finals.

eigning senior national rifle shooting champion Ransford Goodluck has struck form ahead of the National Championships with victory in last Sunday’s Recorded Fullbore Shoot at the Timehri Rifle and Pistol ranges.

In ideal conditions for shooting with switching left to right winds and brilliant sunshine, Goodluck was bang on target, shooting possibles at the 300, 500 and 900 yards ranges to finish the day with an overall aggregate of 135 points with 15 V-bulls.

He shot 50.3 at 300 yards, 50.7 at 500 yards and 35.5 at 900 yards. National Captain Mahendra Persaud was second with 132 points and nine V-bulls. He shot 49.6 at 300 yards, 50.2 at 500 yards and 33.1 at 900 yards.

WICB in line for possible suspension from ICC

T

he ICC board will meet on November 10 with the implications of West Indies' abandonment of their tour of India certain to dominate discussions.

While the ICC has released a statement expressing a hope "the matter will be resolved amicably", it appears that the potential consequences for the WICB could be catastrophic if the ICC's rules are applied to the letter.

The worst case scenario is not only that WICB could see its participation fees for the 2015 World Cup reallocated to the BCCI whether West Indies are involved or not, but it could also face suspension from the ICC. However, since this series was based on a bilateral agreement, the ICC can only take action if the BCCI lodges a complaint with it.

"The International Cricket Council said on Wednesday it was concerned with the dispute between the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the West Indies Cricket Board, and was closely monitoring the developments arising from the recently cancelled tour of India," an ICC statement, issued on Wednesday, said.
