he Disciplined Forces will cast their ballots today as the two major parties make last- minute appeals for their votes.

In contrasting messages, People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Prime Ministerial Candidate Elisabeth Harper, in a letter dispatched via email said “on behalf of myself, family and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic, I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the unwavering commitment and dedication which you, the members of the Disciplined Services, have displayed in defending our nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in maintaining law and order and in ensuring that all Guyanese are safe in their homes, streets and communities”.

She said over the years, “you have all carried out your duties while fulfilling your family obligations, at times with great personal sacrifice.

Your professional efforts in this regard must be commended and all Guyanese remain appreciative.”

Harper said the PPP/C will continue to respect the constitutional roles of the Disciplined Services. “My Party will work with the respective agencies towards strengthening existing systems to provide the enabling conditions for enhanced professionalism and greater efficiency in the execution of your mandate.”

She added that the PPP/C remained committed to improving the welfare of servicemen and women and encouraged them to stay true to the oaths of their profession as they upheld their sacred duty to defend and secure the country and its people.

The security forces usually cast their ballots one week before the rest of the nation, sometimes called D-Day. Among the agencies that will be voting on Saturday are: the Guyana Defence Force (GDF); the Guyana Police Force (GPF); and the Guyana Prison Service (GPS). The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) does not vote on D-Day because the officers are usually from the areas that they serve in; this is according to Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle. He explained that the Fire Service traditionally votes on Election Day along with the rest of the

country.

For his part, A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Presidential Candidate David Granger, in a fullpage advertisement, told the servicemen and women that the country was gripped in a security crisis and encouraged them to vote for change.

“Guyana has been suffering from the most severe and sustained security crisis in its history over the past 15 years during the presidencies of Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar.”

The Presidential Candidate pointed out that the GPF and the GDF, which should help in making Guyana safe, have been left under-resourced, underfunded, and under-equipped by the governing party. He said the combined cost of crime and incompetence has taken a toll on everyone’s quality of life in the country.

He mentioned the Disciplined Forces Commission, which was constituted under the Jagdeo presidency to make recommendations for the development of the Disciplined Forces. Granger said the Commission made over 150 recommendations and most of them were still to be instituted by the Government and those include better working conditions and better salaries for members of the security forces.

“I pledge, therefore, that an APNU+AFC coalition under my presidency will increase your pay to liveable levels and improve your condition of service.”

President Donald Ramotar had also penned

a letter to members of the Disciplined Forces requesting their support earlier this week.

Meanwhile, GECOM’s Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield said that the Commission was in full preparation mode to facilitate the forces on voting day. He said that all systems were in place for members of the Disciplined Forces to cast their ballots on Saturday in this year’s General and Regional Elections – one week before the official day of the polls.

“All our preparations are very advanced…my staff, along with agents from respective parties, they’ve extracted the amount of Disciplined Services ranks who will be voting…the process of extracting is done in the presence of agents of the parties, we started that exercise yesterday afternoon [Tuesday] at 16:00h and we are going through that exercise as we speak with agents from the parties.”

Lowenfield said that at least 84 polling stations would be in use across the country as the security officers will be voting in areas where they live. “They will be intermixed as the law prescribes at the residences in the divisions’ sub division where these ranks would have ordinarily reside – that is to say: I am a soldier, I am stationed in Eteringbang but I belong to 51 Village Corentyne, I will be intermixing in District Six because as you know it’s General and Regional Elections.

Satisfied

GDF Public Relations Officer Lorraine Forrester related to this newspaper that thus far they were satisfied with all the arrangements put in place. She disclosed that there were 23 polling stations: some were located on the various bases and others such as the ones in outlying areas would be located in close proximity to the base.

Asked whether arrangements were put in place by GECOM to ensure that GDF ranks did not vote more than once, Forrester stated that the elections body will be taking off the names of the officers who vote on D-Day from the national list of electors before the May 11 General and Regional Elections. Apart from this, she noted that the various political parties will have polling agents present at the various polling stations who will also

ensure that these persons’ names are taken off the national list.

Across at the GPS, Director Welton Trotz also indicated to this newspaper that all systems have been put in place for ranks within his agency to cast their ballots. “On Saturday, we have arranged for the ranks to be given time off in batches to go vote so they will come in early and then go vote,” Trotz explained. He further detailed that the polling stations would be located at the Prison Service’s Sports Club located at the various prisons across Guyana.

For its part, the GPF has also related that it was ready for D-Day. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Balram Persaud, disclosed that the Force has been working along with GECOM to ensure that all arrangements were put in place in time for Saturday.

He told the Guyana Times that most of the Police stations will be used as polling stations, particularly in the outlying regions. Persaud said that stations such as Brickdam and Timehri will be polling stations for ranks in those districts. This newspaper understands that officers in Georgetown will be voting at the Officers Mess Annex and at the Police Sports Club.

Furthermore, the Assistant Police Commissioner ruled out that there will be any second voting by ranks of the Police Force.

While he could not say what arrangements have been put in place to prevent this, Persaud noted that the issue was discussed. He added too that the polling agents from the various political parties will have copies of the list to ensure this does not happen.

Clean elections campaign

T

oday close to 7000 members of the joint services will vote in this year’s historic General and Regional elections- one week ahead of the rest of the population to facilitate their availability to man polling stations and be on standby should there be any violence or other emergencies on May 11.

D-Day as it is commonly called is usually a dry run for some of the polling day staff and though our men and women in uniform usually conduct this process very smoothly keen eyes are often trained on them, given this country’s history regarding the military’s involvement in the voting process. Also significant at this juncture is the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) concerns about possible double-voting. The Guyana Elections Commission has adamantly opposed removing the names of members of the joint services from the Voter’s list once they would have cast their ballots or creating two separate lists as was proposed by the party.

To date GECOM has given all the assurances that every possible angle has been covered to prevent double-voting and even urged parties not to “lose sleep” over the issue.

Whatever happens today in terms of the conduct of the polls will likely give an indication as to how prepared is the elections’ body and what is likely to follow on May 11, when the general population cast their ballots.

It is to be noted as well, that despite all the pleas and exhortations from all quarters, the current campaign season has not been altogether clean. Starting out with APNU’s Vanessa Kissoon’s over-exuberance during two events in Linden, one of which landed her in court; to the stoning of PPP/C’s supporters returning home from a rally in Albion and the latest acts of terror in Warlock, East Ruimveldt all have sent mixed messages of the maturity of our people and the ability of political leaders to rein their own supporters.

Despite all the accusations levelled against the PPP/C by the opposition, Wednesday night’s disruption of that party’s meeting in Warlock, by persons draped in APNU/ AFC colours must be condemned and so too the mounting of two effigies of David Granger and Moses Nagamootoo hanged on a pole on the Essequibo Coast. These acts can only serve to disrupt the peace and engender violence against groups in this tense political season. Whatever our differences as a people, and there are many, electoral violence is not one of the solutions. What will solve the problem is democracy, which is made possible only when we have an election with integrity; when our leaders engage in issue-based debates and campaign meetings are focussed on outlining one’s vision for the development of this country.

To this end, political and religious leaders must begin to educate their followers on the need to show restraint.

Hence, the half-hearted statement of condemnation of the Warlock incident by the opposition will not suffice. Instead of forthrightly condemning the acts the PNC-led APNU/ AFC in a statement on Friday described the incident as an isolated case and tied it to alleged years of marginalisation of the community by the PPP/C Government.

Elections are not a do or die affair as some tend to saywe can wait for the next cycle. GECOM too has the biggest role in ensuring that it conducts an election that is beyond reproach. Already one observer mission- Organisation of American States has expressed its concern at the “escalation of provocative language being used in the runup to the May 11 General and Regional Elections and calls on all stakeholders to engage in a respectful exchange of ideas during the political campaign.”

What could be more profitable, if parties and candidates trade remarks on key issues in contention, setting aside personal attacks and insults. The alternative to this is that both the process and outcome of the election will lead to a government that lacks public confidence and trust.

Life has improved since the poor governance of the 1980s Dear Editor, Freddie Kissoon and his urban friends say life under the PNC dictatorship was better than life under the PPP/C’s democratic Government. People disagree saying life has improved tremendously since the 1980s.

In my travels around Guyana, people reminisced about the misery of life under the PNC regime. They spoke about the difficulties of having access to basic utilities such as running water, phone, electricity and transportation. They also note schools were collapsing; education was not meaningful, propaganda ploy to serve the PNC after it took over all private schools.

People spoke about potholes everywhere on the main highway (and the secondary roads in urban areas). There were hardly any paved roads in the villages (only dirt, mud road) during the PNC era.

Public transportation

was virtually non-existent during the 1980s after the PNC banned private means of transport, denying bus operators an opportunity to earn income, forcing them to migrate.

People note that life has improved tremendously since the days of the dictatorship – accessible roads, unlimited running water, proper schools, unfettered free press, a working phone in every home (not to mention mobile phones).

Government generated electricity is available almost everywhere with occasional blackouts as compared with near permanent blackouts during the dictatorship. Even the hinterland people have access to electricity through solar panels.

It was almost impossible to make a phone call during the PNC era as the phone system was in disorder. The cost of making calls was prohibitive – US$5 a minute to Canada or England or US. Today, everyone owns a

phone. Calls to the US are just about 25 cents a minute.

Government buildings were in disrepair under the PNC. Today, Government owned buildings are in relatively good order. Private homes were collapsing and appeared shabby during the 1980s.

Today, they are well painted and a sight to behold. Homes are very modern. And there are mansions in every community, a sight unimaginable during the 1970s and 1980s.

During the 1960s, urban areas had running water in their homes while rural areas had standpipes. When the PNC came into office, stand pipes were neglected and pipe borne water became a scarce commodity as the PNC regime punished Indians for voting PPP. In rural areas, people turned to trench water to wash and bathe. As a child, I remember fetching trench water (a bucket in each hand) for about half a mile

to water plants, for the cattle, and for washing bartan and clothing. Youngsters made many back and forth journeys fetching water in buckets to fill barrels before and after school.

I used to go to the four foot next door to where Dr Jagan’s parents lived to bathe before going to school.

Other children (and even adults) did same. Trench water was often contaminated with feces from latrines and from waste of hospital mortuaries, but often it was the only water available for washing.

We relied on rain for drinking water and for cooking. Some people literally drank canal water.

Occasionally, pipe water was available for brief periods from the overhead village tanks when electricity was available to pump the water to the tanks.

People stored water in barrels uncertain when next they would have drinking water.

TV personality has disappeared Dear Editor, I wish to bring to your attention a troubling matter. In November 2013, I went along with other vendors to purchase two water coolers that most vendors used around the city.

At that time a TV personality (name given) was dealing with that business at that location in Charlestown. He told some of the vendors that he would get these water coolers, as a shipment was ex-

pected in December 2014 for the Christmas holidays, and it's a first come, first served priority, and that we should pay beforehand.

He collected our monies and issued receipts then in November 2013. He asked us to check in December 2013.

However, upon checking in December, we received no coolers. That was not possible, as he said another shipment was expected in February 2014, for

Mashramani.

Upon checking in February 2014, we were again told to check in August as yet another shipment was expected soon.

Upon checking again, he told us to check again in December 2014. This again was a failure.

He however, told us to take in our receipts and he would return our monies.

Since the beginning of the year, including the latter part of last year, we have

been checking at his location and he was never there.

He has suddenly disappeared. We the vendors need to have our monies from this TV personality, as it is, it seems that he himself needed monies in doing that awful transaction of dishonesty.

Please return our monies or deliver the items.

Dear Editor, I am sure that everyone would now agree that foreign forces which sought their own interests have joined with our local lackeys to destroy the way of life in this beautiful Guyana.

But such deeds seem inherent in many countries around the world. It is only after the fruits of such sordid actions are realized that we lament about the unfortunate outcomes, as we then afterwards enter the domain of repentances and casting blame.

It is only after the massive destruction of the Second World War, and the deaths of millions of persons do we hear the four-word sentence in Hitler’s Germany, “We should have resisted”.

As for Guyana, we cannot doubt that the recent unfortunate outbursts of Dr Bheri Ramsaran, to what he

deemed as provocation, are today’s spin-off products of our society. We tolerated a lot of nonsense a long time now, but I am glad to see that we have now arisen to come down on him.

So now that Guyanese seem to be in a cleansing mood, we should continue our forward movement and condemn the politicians and their cohorts who denied the rights of Guyanese to choose Governments of their choice.

It is dishonest and absurd to say that one political party won over two-thirds of the votes in the 1985 elections in Guyana, and so on.

We should also recognize the cruel turncoats in our society and condemn them as they permit their mouths and actions to be strangers to their consciences, while in search of self glorification and power.

History is replete with such masqueraders who cunningly traverse from the truth to the ridiculous to browbeat their victims even to the extent of denying their ethnicity.

I am attaching one self-evidenced explanatory article by Freddie Kissoon, “Mahadai Das told me she was raped” (article received), and I shall be grateful for it to be conspicuously re-printed, so that it can possibly catapult some of us into some bath water to help us rinse our souls which have to be laid for judgment before our maker.

As you may be aware, the person mentioned in the article was a gifted Guyanese poet, dancer, actress, teacher and beauty queen. She died as a broken soul in Barbados on April 3, 2003.

Dear Editor Ronald Bulkan wrote a letter asking “what are these persons driven by”?

Mr Bulkan seems to premise his letter on an assumption that I am an “Indian” person who puzzlingly switched my support to the ruling PPP/C. Bulkan asks this question in his letter to the press: “what is it that is responsible for so many of our Indian brethren not to be able to stay the course”?

He goes on to list a number of people who align themselves with the PPP/C. Having said that, I must let Mr Bulkan also know that the PPP/C responds well to my efforts at using my humble influence as a writer in designing a Guyanese social space that is engaging, cooperative, collaborative and that reaches across divides.

My efforts to build such platforms with Opposition parties proved futile, and in fact I found the deep resentment, quest for vengeance and lust for revenge within the Opposition quite a turn off.

I sought engagement with APNU for a feature I wrote on illiteracy, and got the cold shoulder and bureaucratic running around - just to get a comment.

Those little things count.

In the AFC, the self-righteous arrogance and outright anger of lower level quasi-intellectuals generate a bad atmosphere.

Mr Bulkan quoted a part of my writing to back his claim that I suddenly switched sides. I list for the goodly gentleman a few reasons I align myself with the PPP/C’s Donald Ramotar team.

Life has improved since...

During drought, people bought water from far distances hiring donkey or horse drawn carts or tractors to carry water. At times, women had to submit their bodies to the water tank manager to induce him (plead, beg) to release water from the overhead tank or to turn on the water pump – unforgettable experience – so they provide for their families.

Soldiers guarded water tanks in the rural areas so villagers could not force their way in accessing water.

The urban dwellers did not have such a difficult time as rural people in accessing potable water. But over time, the pipes in the urban areas also became dry, and they would also increasingly rely on rain water, storing water in overhead tanks in their yard. Pipe water was available intermittently only for a

few hours day.

Today, every village, the most remote areas, has access to running water. Water pressure is so powerful these days that they bust the pipe as people in Essequibo and West Coast tell me.

People have pipe borne water on their third floor level whereas during the PNC time, they had to dig six feet below ground level to get limited running water. Today, women in the villages no longer have to give their bodies to village tank managers to open the pipes so the community can get a few buckets of drinking water.

With regards to transportation, private buses and hire cars plied the road; people got around relatively easy from the villages to place of business, to the city, and to schools. The train line provided a cheap and easy

means of transport from distant, rural places.

The PNC decided to close down the rail transport system, bringing untold suffering to rural dwellers. The PNC also outlaw private means of transport; buses could no longer transport people.

The PNC opened its own bus system with (TATA) buses provided by the Government of India for free (PNC Government never paid for the buses and the loan was written off). Party supporters were hired to manage the transport system and as drivers. The buses were hardly serviced and inevitably one

hold the view that the PPP/C is the paragon of virtue and perfection. But I believe in Donald Ramotar, and here’s why: President Ramotar showed the courage, character and good conscience to convene the Rodney Commission.

This act alone wins my heart and support for him, as he’s solving our most tragic historical wrong. And the entire Opposition camp criticized him for this noble act, which disgusts me.

After chatting with President Ramotar, I am convinced that he’s a man of outstanding character, courageous leadership, and that he serves the Guyanese nation as a servant-leader, humble and open and authentic.

President Ramotar remains open to new ideas and solutions.

Perceived supporters of other parties had to find their own means of transport, begging minibus operators for a lift. The PNC transportation system collapsed leading to much difficulty in getting around.

With fuel scarce, hire cars were grounded and people were largely stranded unable to conduct business. Students could not even get to school.

People turned to donkey and

horse drawn carts and tractor trailers to move around.

The PNC gave permits for the operation of a limited number of mini-buses during the late 1980s. But transportation cost was relatively high. Since the restoration of democracy, numerous permits have been issued to operate mini-buses and other buses as well as hire cars.

The roads are overcrowded with vehicles leading to traffic jams.

There were numerous other difficulties of life under the PNC – the KSI, imports and exports, contraband goods, no bread or roti, obtaining birth certificates, passports, mar-

riage license, lack of foreign currency, harassment at airport, kick down door robberies, tax clearance to travel, etc.

As the people say, there is no way life under the PNC could be better than life than the PPP. But all is not well under the PPP; people feel much more need to be done and the PPP needs to correct a lot of things. But people don’t want to go back to a life of misery (racial discrimination and persecution) as existed during the 1980s.

Agriculture Minister’s challenge to PNCR:

Come straight on the sugar industry!

uyana’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, has noted with grave concern how the PNCR is ambivalent about the future of the sugar industry. He has challenged them to “come clean” on this important matter.

The PNCR is saying that the industry is not economically viable. They want to close it down and replace it with tilapia farming. Really!

Just four years ago at the 2011 General Elections, their partner, the former AFC, promised to grant sugar workers an increase of 20 per cent, and now their new boss PNCR’s David Granger is talking about closing down

the industry that has built dreams and livelihood for thousands of families.

One may recall that at the 10th Parliament, how the combined Opposition was going to cut funding for sugar but they were thwarted by the massive rally organised by sugar workers outside of Parliament.

Doesn’t the PNCR understand that sugar is embedded in our history? It has been playing a major role in the country’s economic development, and it has laid the foundation for economic growth in other sectors throughout Guyana.

Do they care what will happen with the 20,000 families who will be dislocated, both physically and emotionally, should this

happen? Not only that, families who are engaged in sugar by-product industries, like DIH and DDL, would also be at risk for job losses.

Dr Ramsammy mentions the major role being played by sugar in providing drainage and irrigation services that benefit all communities in Regions Three (West DemeraraEssequibo Islands), Four (Demerara-Mahaica), Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).

The costs of these services would rise sharply if sugar is allowed to die.

In this election cycle, the Opposition’s position on the sugar industry has been completely reversed from their declared position in 2011. No more increase is proposed by the PNCR for sugar workers.

Instead, they are complaining, in their leaked manifesto, about sugar workers’ pay package, which they claim accounts for 65 per cent of GuySuCo’s expenditure.

Clearly, the PNCR position is unsettling sugar workers and that will cause them to lose many votes.

It’s perplexing to understand why the PNCR’s attitude to the bauxite industry, which is also heavily subsidised by the Government, is completely different. Would the PNCR

ever talk about closing down this industry? No. Bauxite employs a substantial number of their supporters, and any attempt to close down this industry would be detrimental not only to the workers and their families, but also to the country; such a bad move would hurt the party immeasurably.

The PPP/C has learnt that cost-benefit analysis alone cannot guide public policy. Sometimes, compassion and social intervention are needed. Indeed, it’s the PPP/C Government that has rescued bauxite from collapse.

The PPP/C recognises the strategic importance of bauxite, particularly to the mining community at Linden and its environs.

Through the PPP/C’s efforts the bauxite industry is recovering in addition to attracting new investments.

It was not only the bauxite industry that the PNCR regime ruined, but also, sugar and rice as well as the human spirit.

It’s the PPP/C that began to revive these and other industries, as well as, restored the pride and dignity of Guyanese.

Apparently for the Opposition, there is something magical about the figure 20. As mentioned earlier, they proposed in 2011 a 20 per cent in-

crease in sugar workers’ pay. They couldn’t deliver on this promise. Yet, they continue to make unrealisable and unrealistic promises. For example, they are promising a 20 per cent pay raise for the armed forces.

Did the PNCR make

that promise because they believe that the armed forces are superior to other agencies of Government?

Why didn’t they make similar offer(s) when they were in power for almost three decades?

But then, they were more concerned about militarisation and population control than on the professional development of the armed forces. The armed forces were instead highly politicised and they had to ensure that they enforce the PNCR’s idea of party paramountcy.

Yes, the PNC Party was the supreme agency of the State. All other state agencies were subservient to it; the armed forces had to take instructions from the PNCR Party.

There is another major contradiction here. Why would the PNCR give the armed forces a 20 per cent pay rise and promise other civil servants a 10 per cent pay raise? Are they saying that the armed forces are more important than civilian Government workers?

Did the PNCR ever consider what a negative impact a 20 per cent pay increase will have on the economy, including the inflation rate which is now under control in single digit? It’s hard to follow their logic here.

One has to wonder, is the PNCR’s promise guided by the military power brokers in their party?

Perhaps! This also offers a window into how the military men might influence or even direct PNCR policies, should the PNCR win the upcoming elections.

The mind-boggling question is this, from where would the PNCR get the money to pay for huge salary increases? Would the PNCR increase taxes on businesses to pay for salary increases? Or, would they raid the public treasury as they did during their 28-years rule? This attitude does not reflect fiscal prudence.

It brings back ugly memories of how the PNC quickly depleted the public treasury and bankrupt the country. This suggests also that they would want to ride on the same track of fiscal irresponsibility.

As to the future of the sugar industry, it would survive and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development, including the employment rate under a PPP/C rule. We cannot say the same for the PNCR which has been challenged by the Minister of Agriculture to “come clean” on this subject.

AG calls APNU/AFC’s manifesto a “fairy tale from Walt Disney”

ttorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall has lashed the 2015 election manifesto released by the PNC-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) coalition, dubbing its contents “a fairy tale from Walt Disney.”

According to him, portions of the manifesto are riddled with inconsistencies, legal and constitutional impossibilities; “while they have hatched up some solutions to problems which they themselves have caused; while they are promising to do things that have already been done.”

Substantiating his stance and addressing the establishment of a Constitutional Reform Committee, which the Opposition has proposed in its manifesto, Nandlall said that there has been such a committee for several years now with the coalition’s Presidential Candidate David Granger being the Chairman for the last three years. He alluded that it is now ironic that given this and the fact that the Committee met not more than three times in those three years under his chairmanship, they now seek to promise to establish such a committee.

Further, Nandlall said

While it is customary for the procession to divide into two at the junction of Woolford Avenue and Albert Street, the unions separated even before they began the march from the Parade Ground. The Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG)-led procession walked ahead, taking a different route.

The Guyana Trade Union Congress (GTUC) then followed, leading the other half of the procession through the regular route.

This division was recognised by Clerical and Commercial Workers Union (CCWU) President Sherwood Clarke, who recorded his disappointment about the segregation.

“Trade unions are very important; it’s disappointing that we have two rallies when today was supposed to be workers’ day and suppose to be celebrating and reflect on the job leaders have done for the interest of the

working class,” he stated.

Nevertheless, Clarke called for unity among Guyanese.

Guyana Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union (GPTWU) President Harold Shepherd encouraged Guyanese to hold their peace during this elections season. “As a union, we believe that peace is the best thing for Guyana and therefore, we call on all political parties, all Guyanese and workers in general, to keep the peace and accept the results of the elections,” Shepherd urged.

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) President Patrick Yarde expressed his vision for the country’s Public Sector to progress in unity.

“What I have always prayed for, hope for and worked towards, was national unity and working class wage. That

is my expectation for the future; that the authorities respect trade union rights, respect the law and operate in a fair and even-handed way for workers, recognising their values and contributions,” Yarde stated.

In addition to a united workforce, leaders reiterated calls for decent wages and salaries for the Public Sector. “Whoever wins the elections, we need an increase in the salaries and wages paid to workers. We also need a reduction in the price they pay for land,” he remarked. Duncan stated that with the salary public servants were getting, they cannot afford to pay for land much less built a house.

On the other hand, Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) General Secretary Coretta McDonald was very

vocal in registering her concerns about the challenges teachers face. She noted that last year the Union had entered into an agreement with the Government and while most of the terms were realised, teachers were still left waiting on the others.

Furthermore, McDonald added, “GTU is not aligned to any political party. Our message on this Labour Day is decent work for decent pay. We would want to see more emphasis on education and teachers particularly”.

Labour Day, or May Day as it often called, commemorates workers’ struggle for better working conditions. In Guyana, the Public Sector has been suffering from what most Guyanese call “meagre” wages and salaries in an economy where the cost of living is relative-

Alleged armed robber remanded A 24-year-old was jailed on Thursday after making his first court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to face two charges of armed robbery.

The accused, Kevin Mingo is alleged to have robbed Anferny Cantzlar of two gold chains valued $55,000 with a gun on

April 27 while in James Street, Albouystown, in the Georgetown Magisterial District.

Mingo also stands accused of simultaneously robbing Patrick Dundas of his pair of gold chains as well. They were priced at a $130,000.

Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves told the court that the two Virtual Complainants (VCs) had stopped at a shop on James Street to buy cigarettes when the accused approached them with the guns and relieved them of

He objected to any bail the court may consider, highlighting the seriousness and prevalence of the offense. With this the Magistrate refused Mingo bail. He was told to return to court on May 19.

Conman who refused to pay taxi bill gets bail

A

resident of Good Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, was granted bail on Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

The accused, Raymond Hernandez who is a miner and resides at 214 Two Miles, Good Fortuin, ap-

parently hired the Virtual Complainant (VC) Linden Park who owns motor car HC 2667 to transport him around town and Parika but then refused to pay.

The charges read that he had utilised the services of the VC between February 20 and March 23, incurring a debt of $19,500 in taxi fare. The VC told the court that the defend-

ant had agreed to pay him the next day after driving him around as he had gold to sell to the Guyana Gold Board but the VC stated that the defendant reneged on this agreement.

However, Hernandez told the court that he did not refuse to pay the VC. He had entered the vehicle with no money and both had agreed that he

could pay when he gets out of the interior again.

Nevertheless, the accused told the court that he will pay the VC the money in two days time.

Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry released him on $15,000 bail. He is expected back in court on May 14.

Mechanic pleads guilty to forgery

A

mechanic charged with forgery pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Thursday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The accused, 27-yearold Ramanand Persaud, appeared in court for the first time on Thursday morning to face the charge which read that between

March 12 and March 24 in the Georgetown Magisterial District, with intent to defraud, he conspired with others unknown to forge information on his passport to give the impression that it was issued by the Guyana’s Central Immigration Passport Office.

Persaud pleaded guilty to the offence.

He was represented by

Attorney Peter Hugh who asked the court for leniency as his client is throwing himself at the mercy of the court. Hugh stated that his client is a known mechanic and welder but otherwise he is not too bright and was tricked into committing the act.

Hugh asked the court to not place a custodial sentence on his client as the offence he committed was

not one of violence or one that causes harm to others.

He asked the court to grant his client a fine.

This was granted by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and the defendant was fined $100,000. However, she told him that he will be imprisoned for six months if he is unable to pay.

The Attorney stated that his client will pay.

In continuing, the Attorney General said the Opposition has proposed immunities of the President will be reduced.

According to him, immunities of the President have already been reduced in the 2001 Constitutional Reform process.

“Today, it is no different from any other Head of State in the civilised world.

I challenge anyone to prove me wrong. In their effort to fool the electorate, they are promising to make a mockery of the highest office of the land. What is the rationale for reducing presiden-

tial powers but adding three “Vice Presidents” to the Cabinet in the same government?” he questioned.

Nandlall said that the coalition has promised that the new Constitution will enshrine freedom of speech and the “Bill of Rights” but every citizen knows

that the Constitution already enshrines freedom of speech and the “Bill of Rights” as fundamental rights and freedoms and it was the PPP/C Government which had, in the Constitution in 2001, expanded the Bill of Rights over and above almost every country in the English speaking Caribbean and perhaps every country in the entire Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General further went on to state that while the document has promised to address the delays in confirming the appointment of members of the Judiciary and “rationalise the position of the Chief Justice and the Chancellor of the Judiciary”, it is more than comical since the entire country knows that it is the Leader of the Opposition who has steadfastly refused to agree for the confirmation of the current office holders of these two positions as is required by the Constitution.“In other words, they are proposing to solve problems which they themselves have created. This seems to be a common thread running through the document,” the Minister said.

Where’s the money...

G ...for APNU/AFC’s giveaways??

uyanese have always been able to “pick sense from nonsense”. And the “final” PNC-led APNU/AFC’s Manifesto is packed with much nonsense, it’ll be like picking cotton!

Take the very first section - what they’ll do in the first 100 days. Confirming what was purportedly “leaked” they’re promising: “Significant salary increases for Government workers, including nurses, teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary education; security personnel; and civil servants on the traditional payroll.”

This is plain and simple political prostitution of the highest order: To entice their voters, promise 40,000+ “traditional” supporters - all in the non-productive sector “significant” pay raises which the rest of the workers of this country will have to fund for the rest of their lives.

And the devil with where the money’s going to come from. This is the kind of “populism” that destroyed our economy back in the 70s and will destroy it again.

Look right next door in Venezuela - sitting on the largest reserves of oil in the world and pumping it out like crazy. While Maduro might very well want to help his supporters, the resultant runaway inflation, shortage of all goods including basic foodstuff, and the tanking of the Venezuelan economy - just as with Burnham - are doing the very opposite.

The bottom line is that unless an economy is producing more and bringing in more foreign currency, increasing salaries for such a vast number of non-productive workers can only be funded through printing of Guyana dollars.

Which leads to inflation as too much money chase too few goods. Sure it’s nice to raise the salaries of Government workers - their salaries’ve been raised TENFOLD since 1992 - but it was in step with the growth in the economy.

And what message does it send to workers in the productive sector? Gold, bauxite, sugar, rice, timber etc?? Shouldn’t they be getting raises too? But in the real world, the private sector knows that unless they tie salary increases to productive increases they’re guaranteeing bankruptcy - sooner rather than later.

If the Opposition’s really serious about the public sector’s salary scale...why don’t they take a leaf from the private sector and demand productivity increases. Like Hoyte did after he signed the IMF agreement in 1989: cut at least 2000 workers from the rolls.

Barbados has been told to cut 3000. The remainder can then be paid extra for doing the extra work. Voila!

Productivity increase!

But rather than doing that, the Opposition says it’ll reduce VAT - thus reducing revenues - even as they raise salaries!! Pick sense from nonsense! Reject them!!

...to investors in Berbice Bridge

The Opposition PNC-led APNU/AFC coalition also promised a “reduction in the Berbice Bridge toll”. Another wild and reckless pandering for votes. The Berbice Bridge was built on the Public Private Partnership financing principle. The Private investors have to recoup their investment within the time frame in the BOOT agreement (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer).

Even at the present rate of toll, critics have been forced to point out that no dividends have been paid to the private investors.

So what’ll happen when the tolls are halved - as the Opposition promised more specifically on the hustings. As the Private Sector Commission executives warned when the idea was floated by the Opposition, this action of cutting the tolls will be the death knell not only of the Berbice Bridge - but of all Public Private Partnership projects being contemplated.

And imagine that the World Bank, the IDB and all the other International Financial Institutions recommend this as the way to go in infrastructure development!

But why should the Opposition care? All they want are votes. For power.

merindian Affairs Minister Pauline Sukhai addressed the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday where she gave an eloquent speech about Guyana’s continued commitment to Amerindians and their rights as Guyanese.

The Minister was at the time speaking at the UN Headquarters during the fourteenth Session of the UN Permanent Forum On Indigenous Issues, in New York.

The agenda for the event was for the world’s nations to discuss indigenous participation in their democratic societies and their part in the electoral processes.

Minister Sukhai highlighted the legislation that underpins Indigenous rights, the Amerindian Act No 6 of 2006, as well as those rights that give even more standing in Guyana’s Constitution.

The Amerindian Act of 2006 underscores the autonomy of indigenous villages as it has a political system that empowers indigenous peoples to elect their own leaders. Minister Sukhai explained to the world leaders that this enables the National Toshaos Council – which is a legislative body (that) comprises of all of the democratically elected village leaders – to make decisions on behalf of the Amerindians.

It was noted that such indigenous village leaders have mandates to create their own village rules once it does not contradict with that of the laws of Guyana and aligns with the needs of their respective villagers.

Mention was also made of the advances that have been made in the areas that Amerindians have

branched off into. Minister Sukhai stated that “10 per cent of the country’s population is actively involved in all levels of political structures and local government systems which include Regional, Neighborhood and the Amerindian Village Councils. Guyana’s indigenous peoples are represented at the parliamentary level representing both sides of the House.”

Guyana’s emphasis on Amerindian welfare was also noted at the forum as the Minister explained that Guyana’s indigenous peoples are represented by herself and Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett (both of indigenous descent), who have the influence of the country’s Cabinet as Ministers of Amerindian Affairs and Foreign Affairs, respectively.

Further, the UN Permanent Forum On Indigenous Issues was made aware that the Amerindian peoples in Guyana was granted an Indigenous Peoples Commission in September 2010. Minister Sukhai explained that

10 Commissioners were appointed to steer the Commission towards its constitutional mandate, which is “to establish mechanisms to enhance the status of indigenous peoples and to respond to their legitimate demands and needs”. She detailed that five of the Commissioners are indigenous with the Chair being an indigenous woman.

Regarding national development, Minister Sukhai assures the forum that Amerindians in Guyana have taken centre stage in national development as the Government has built an engaging partnership with the Amerindian Village Councils, the community based organisations, and also international agencies that have (or can be) instrumental in furthering the situation of Amerindians.

She stated that such affiliations have worked to complement with the plans of the Government of Guyana for the Amerindian people, detailing these as “long term plans in infrastructure, education, health, secure livelihoods, etc geared towards better access to social services, enhancement of economic independence and national development.”

Minister Sukhai concluded her address by ensuring that the leaders are aware of the stand of Guyana’s indigenous peoples in relation to the political arena. She stated that they are integrally involved in all facets of the election machinery, adding that “the political parties’ lists of candidates for the upcoming General and Regional Elections on May 11, 2015 reflect the inclusion and participation of indigenous political candidates.”

11 arrested in Agricola raid

total of 11 men and women were taken into Police custody on Friday morning following a raid that was conducted in Agricola, Greater Georgetown.

According to information received, member of

the Guyana Police Force conducted searches on nine buildings in the area during which an unlicensed .38 revolver with two matching rounds and one spent shell were recovered in one of the houses. The two occupants of the house were told of the

offence, cautioned and arrested.

However, the other nine persons detained were arrested for trafficking in narcotics and pending investigations into armed robberies. The Police are continuing their investigations.

ith both eyes set on May 11, leaders of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) urged its members to carefully weigh the options before voting on Election Day. FITUG held its traditional May Day rally at the National Park where it was joined by President Donald Ramotar and other top People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) leaders including Prime Ministerial Candidate, Elisabeth Harper.

With General and Regional Elections fast approaching, the speakers reminded workers gathered to consider the gains they have made throughout the years and how their working conditions, though not perfect, have improved tremendously and take these as key factors when they will be making one of the most important decisions in their lives on May 11.

President Ramotar, delivering the feature address at the ceremony, underscored the developments his Administration made for the betterment of the working class people in

society. “From the very inception, we have worked to improve the conditions of the working people of our country.

We have brought more legislation that serves to strengthen workers rights and offers greater protection to our working people, we have signed more ILO (International Labour Organisation) conventions than any other country in the Caribbean, also aimed at strengthening the position of our working people,” he said.

Ramotar added that the Government has worked assiduously to improve the net income of workers and establish a decent national minimum wage for all categories of workers which ultimately leads to improved quality of life.

On this note, he pledged to continue to revise these protocols and make the necessary adjustments as the economy grows so that the entire population can enjoy the benefits of a flourishing nation.

FITUG President Carvil Duncan also touched on the critical role workers will play in the upcoming election, while urging them to carefully examine the options before

them instead of making an uninformed decision come May 11.

“Are we satisfied with our achievements? Are we saying to ourselves that better ought to be done...

This is a very crucial May Day… it is customary that we examine the past, we plan for the future and we reminisce on our failures. What makes this May Day different? This May Day falls 10 days before National and Regional Elections… we the workers are called upon to make some crucial decisions…,” Duncan stressed.

Duncan also addressed the issue of unemployment and underemployment in Guyana.

He agreed that unemployment exists in Guyana but urged the workers to realise that many other countries around the world are faced with similar issues. “The unemployment figure coming out of ILO has indicated that Guyana has been doing better than many other countries in Caribbean,” he revealed.

In fact, he noted that Guyana, under the PPP/C rule, has made significant strides in addressing this issue but there are certain forces we continue to try to stymie this progress.

“Our unemployment is not an act of trade unions’ inability, not an act of the administration failing to provide jobs, it is an act of those who cut the projects and deny you the right to have jobs,” he declared, as he noted regrettably the many job opportunities that were sidelined when the parliamentary Opposition blocked projects such as the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project, Cheddi Jagan International Airport Expansion Project, among others.

United trade union movement

Duncan also preached about the urgent need for unity among all trade unions in Guyana. He expressed his wishes of one day having one large Labour Day celebration in Georgetown where all the unions would join in solidarity for one grand march through the streets of the capital city and then assemble at one locale, enjoying one spectacular programme.

“The united trade union movement can gain better and more benefit for its workers than a divided trade union movement… we need unity but unity can only be achieved if we all are together and reading from the same hymn book… we need to have a united trade union movement,” he proclaimed.

Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) – the largest union within the FITUG bloc – Komal Chand joined his colleagues in urging the workers to reflect on the working conditions they had endured in the past and compare it with the improved conditions now when they go to vote.

espite saying that it would not go witchhunting if it was elected on May 11, the People’s National Congress (PNC)-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) coalition has promised to launch several inquiries into key projects and the operations of specific state agencies.

According to the coalition’s Manifesto, which was released on Thursday afternoon at the Stabroek Market Square, the alliance plans to conduct investigations into several key areas and projects which the Government had embarked on as part of its strategy to fight “corruption” and to ensure a process of “transparency”. At the top of the list for the coalition is The Commissioning Of Forensic Audits Of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL), the major stakeholder in the Marriott Guyana Hotel project and the use of funds which were allocated for the 2005 floods, the 2007 Cricket World Cup, the hosting of the CARIFESTA X and the ICC Twenty/20 Tournament.

The other actions, it said, would include the appointment of a group of experts to conduct an in-depth review of all major contracts entered into or approved by the Government of Guyana and entities such as NICIL, the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and those “particularly pertaining to the disposal of state-owned assets, including lands”.

Prosecution The coalition, in its Manifesto, further said that it would launch investigations into the use of the PetroCaribe funds secured from the deal between the Government of Guyana and the Government of Venezuela; the Lotto and other funds which it said were used as ‘slush funds’. The hoped-for APNU/AFC Government also said it would investigate the contracts for the new Skeldon Sugar Factory and the Enmore Sugar Packaging Plant, CJIA expansion project, the contract and financing arrangements for the Marriott Guyana Hotel, the contract for the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project and the contract for the Specialty Hospital.

Meanwhile, leader of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) and Executive Member of APNU, Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, said that a coalition Government will prosecute those in the current Government who have abused their powers. Speaking at the launch of the Manifesto, Roopnaraine told the gathering that the time has come for healing in the country, noting that the coalition would ensure a better life for all Guyanese.

He, however, told them that the past must be forgotten and was not relevant in this election.

“Everything we say we will do, will be done with unity in mind … We will not try to take you back to the 60s like the PPP likes to do. We are done with that. We have finished with that. Let us send a message to them … it is time for unity … we have had enough, we have much to do.

We have a long road to walk.

This Manifesto, these are the policies for transformation. We must give our children a better Guyana than our parents gave us…,” Roopnaraine said.

In further remarks, he promised those present that a coalition Government would ensure that those who have abused the people and have misused the country’s assets were held accountable and that justice was served. He said that while the coalition had promised that it would not be involved in witch-hunting, serving justice was not a witchhunt.

“Those who have committed crimes against you, the people, will face the full brunt of the law,” the WPA leader told the gathering. Making a distinction without any discernible difference, Roopnaraine declared, “We have declared that we are not into witchhunting, but justice is not witch-hunting. Crime against the people must be punished.

You will not find us wanting in the execution of justice,” This is even as the coalition’s Presidential Candidate, David Granger, had promised somewhat more expansively the Guyanese society that his party was not into witch-hunting and will not hunt anyone down. He had last month assured the business community that if he won the upcoming elections, he would not be hunting down or sidelining political opponents but would instead create an inclusionary system to run the country. “We are not going to be an administration that is bent on revenge, that is bent on recrimination or that is bent on retribution. It is going to be one that is based on respect,” he had told a Business Luncheon organised by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) in March, while he repeatedly promised to include members of the now governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) who were not tainted by bad governance and corruption.

Father seeks help for 7-year- Digicel celebrates Girls in ICT old daughter diagnosed with brain tumor

Seven-year-old Kalecia Harcourt has been diagnosed with a brain tumour

A

concerned father is now appealing for financial assistance from corporate society and the general public after his seven-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a life threatening malignant brain tumour.

Travis Harcourt, of Plantation Litchfield, West Coast Berbice is now left with no other option than to appeal for public assistance after his daughter Kalecia Harcourt was diagnosed with the life threatening condition some weeks ago.

According to the father, the young girl began experiencing severe headaches which became unbearable.

At this point, he said that he decided to take her to seek medical attention and after several tests and a brain scan, the growth was discovered.

“She has been experiencing some severe headaches and so we took her to the hospital. They sound her and did some tests and so on her but they didn’t come up with anything so they give her a referral to do an eye test. So we went to Da Silva’s Optical and do the eye test and it proved that the eyes are intact. So I ask a friend who works at a private clinic to get a paper for me to do a brain scan. So I went to the Mercy Hospital and I did the scan and there they found that it is a tumour,” the distraught father related.

Harcourt related that the surgery his daughter requires is beyond the hands of the local medical practitioners and as such, costly; leading to his appeal for financial help.

While the headaches persist, the young girl is now on medication which assists in reducing the extent of the pain. Harcourt said that neither the doctors nor he could say how the young girl developed the malignant growth in her head while nothing that before the diagnosis, the young girl had never complained of any other symp-

tom or discomfort.

“We didn’t know of this before. She never complained about anything.

I mean they are children, they could be playing and fall down in the yard and never complain but she never showed any signs,” he expressed. He lamented that up until her diagnosis, his daughter was a healthy child.

Meanwhile, the cost of the surgery which will be done overseas is some

US$35,000; a cost he said he cannot afford.

He said that the family has been told that they have until May 23 to raise the money so that his daughter’s life can be saved. While the Government through the Health Ministry has promised to stand a part of the cost, Harcourt said he still has to find the remainder.

The family is appealing to anyone with the capacity to help to assist in order to save the life of their loved one.

“I am appealing to anyone who is concerned and who can help, any parent, any Government agency or any kids funding who is willing to assist in any way to please help,” the father pleaded.

igicel Guyana last week joined the rest of the world in observing Girls in ICT – an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in ICTs. In Guyana, this is no different, as Girls in ICT is observed and celebrated by several organisations, including Digicel. This year, Digicel partnered with two organisations, The National Frequency Management Unit and The Caricom Secretariat in their effort to bring ICT awareness to our girls and young women in Guyana.

with the Girls in ICT initiative, not only this year but every other year that we would have partnered with the NFMU and now The Caricom Secretariat. We will continue to support ventures like these in an effort to bring ICT to the fore. Our business is telecommunications and pushing ICT to girls ensures a solid future for women in the sector” Digicel’s Chief Technical Officer Ryan Sinclair said.

This is the second year that Digicel has partnered with the NFMU in supporting their Girls in ICT observances. During a symposium that was held on April 23 at North Ruimveldt Multilateral School each of the girls present received a flash drive sponsored by

Digicel. The flash drives contained useful information that was presented.

During The Caricom Secretariat’s workshop which was held on April 30, Digicel and other organisations were invited to have more of an interactive session with the girls who participated in the one day event. One hundred and twenty five students and teachers from 10 schools in Guyana were part of the day’s activities which included Skype conferences with the Caricom Youth Ambassadors and interactions with girls from Jamaica and Belize. The theme for this year’s Girls in ICT Day was “Expanding horizons, changing attitudes”.

CIIP: transforming communities across Guyana

mprovements to communities across Guyana are happening daily through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP).

Noticeably cleaner communities with improved access to public facilities are complementing a modernising Guyana. The Government of Guyana through the Housing and Water Ministry commenced the implementation of the $484 million project in 2014.

CIIP is one of Government’s projects aimed at transforming communities through the improvement of aesthetics and access and creation of jobs at the grass root level. Since its introduction to communities in August 2014, CIIP has not failed to deliver to residents in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six. Improved drainage networks, trimmed parapets, and accessible burial grounds are now visible in many Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), targeted

Municipalities and Village Councils. These works are being done to create cleaner, safer and healthier communities conducive for family life and productivity.

Thanks to our hard working Community Enhancement Workers (CEWs) over 50 public cemeteries including Rose Hall Town, Canefield, Bush Lot, and La Belle Alliance were cleaned and cleared of dense vegetation. This was no easy task since many of the cemeteries had huge trees with wayward branches, tall bushes, swampy areas infested with snakes, and Africanised bee hives.

Today, persons can access new burial plots and visit the tombs of their loved ones. For instance, the Canefield Cemetery, which is among several cemeteries that were never cleaned, is now accessible. Some families encouraged by the access created now maintain the area around the tombs of their loved ones. The impeccable condition of the

Trafalgar Cemetery situated in Region Five is a sparkling example of the works being done by the CEWs. C o m m u n i t y Enhancement Workers have been assisting to clean and clear internal drains and parapets. Over 110 areas including the remote riverain communities of Orealla and Siparuta have benefited thus far. Improvements to the internal drainage networks have contributed to the free flow of water, eliminating breeding grounds for vectors that carry harmful diseases such as malaria and chikungunya.

During the recent wet season, CIIP responded to flood emergencies in Regions Two and Four, in areas such as Queenstown, Enmore and Better Hope. CEWs were tasked with removing garbage and debris which clogged several culverts and kokers. The local authorities were pleased with the response and expressed thanks for the provision of labour by the Ministry.

Another important contribution the project has made to communities is the construction and rehabilitation of 30-foot path bridges to the tune of $11.3 mililon.

Residents of Regions Three, Four, Five and Six are beneficiaries of the timber bridges. Some of the NDCs that benefited are Golden Grove/ Diamond Place, Beterverwagting/ Triumph, and Mocha Arcadia in Region Four; Bath/ Woodley Park, and Profit/Rising

he Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has stated that in order for the Public Sector to be reformed, there needs to be a Government of national unity.

At the GTUC Labour Day rally which followed the procession, President of Union Leslie Gonsalves outlined a comprehensive plan that he said will see not only the Public Sector being reformed, but the country as a whole.

Addressing the gathering at the Critchlow Labour College on Woolford Avenue, Gonsalves stated that Guyana needs a government of national unity to bring back order in society. He noted that forming an alliance should be pertinent on issues of the work force’s well being, noting that it will benefit both the union and its members.

Gonsalves highlighted that the industrial climate does not only determine how much profits employees earn for their employers but by the representation, agitation and adherence to rules and laws that protect the rights of workers.

“Through activism on political forefront, governments are forced to recognise and respect the importance of creating not only a safe industrial environment but an environment where our young people leave school, graduate from tertiary institutions and generate employment,” he said. The GTUC President noted it was as a result of this that labour forces enjoy benefits such as maternity pay, annual leave, sickness benefits among others. Gonsalves further stated that through the liberalisation of labour as a social partner that work-

ers enjoy benefits such as pension, gratuity, national insurance and social security.

“We of the Guyana Trades Union Congress are prepared to hold the PPP or new Government accountable for the people in Guyana; collaboration where our interests are involved… we talk about rights to associate based on principles, not friendship; not on kid or kin but universal rights and the rule of law,” Gonsalves pointed out.

Furthermore, the coalition’s Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo, in recognition of the struggles of the working class, declared that his party will be committed to a genuine partnership among the State, labour and businesses. “We realised that the wage being paid at the moment are starvation wages and you need a government that respect your labour and reward you for your labour.

We are committed to this,” Nagamootoo stated.

She noted that this must be brought to an end.

In addition, the GTUC’s youth arm also reiterated calls for more to be done for the improvement of the country’s working class so that they can live a comfortable life.

The organisation frequently partners with various business entities and other NGOs to undertake initiatives, which are aimed at improving the lives of the less fortunate and those in need. Some of the organisations that frequently support these initiatives are the Beharry Group of Companies, Scotiabank and Qualfon.

In January, Habitat’s National Director, Rawle Small, related that proper housing played an important role in the country’s overall development. He stated, “It could affect education because of improper spaces for children to study; it can affect their performance at school. Likewise health – if substandard ma-

terials are used, if you don’t have proper ventilation, if you are living too close to a dumpsite, these can affect your health.”

According to Small, when families are in an adequate

living space, their interaction tends to improve. Therefore, housing is a critical aspect of development, not just from an economic point of view, but also from a human development point of view.

We can never forget the suffering under PNC

Dear Editor, It is with disgust that I look at Moses Nagamootoo and Khemraj Ramjattan and others dancing merrily and in blissful and deliberate oblivion to history. I was even more reviled when I saw APNU+AFC’s ad, featuring a quote from President Barack Obama, which asked for people to forget the past.

Nevertheless, nothing will deter Guyanese from going out on May 11 and voting for the PPP/C and ridding ourselves for at least another five years those traitors who brought untold suffering to Guyana and have wasted and plundered at least two generations of Guyanese.

We can put aside the economic devastation of Guyana’s economy. It is just the economy after all. But for the suffering inflicted on innocent people in Guyana under PNC, now renamed APNU, and joined by AFC, we can never forget. No one will ever forget.

Granger and his ilk, and Nagamootoo and Ramjattan want us to put the past behind just so they can get power. They want us to forget decades of human suffering and torture just so they can enjoy power.

Young people today are born in the wealth of a country and have more than enough to eat and enjoy.

But they need to know that life was not like this.

If young people refuse to

know and feel the pain of what the older generation went through just so they can have all the luxuries of life today, then heaven help us under the future generation. That is why young people need to know.

Nagamoottoo and Granger want us to forget the past so they can get power. Stabroek News wants us to forget the past so they can reclaim power. But I want Nagamootoo, Granger and Stabroek News to answer to these events in history and then tell us why we must forget Guyana’s past.

The holocaust survivors remember the horrors of Buchenwald, and survivors remember the horror of Auschwitz 70 years after its liberation Do you understand what you are reading Nagamootoo, Granger and Stabroek News? These survivors are tirelessly telling their stories 70 years later.

Why do you want us to forget our past and not tell our stories too?

These survivors remembered their past year after year, and they tell their stories to the young people.

They didn’t forget. Why are Guyanese asked to forget ours?

How many survivors do we have in Guyana today that were subjected to violence, starvation, discrimination, humiliation, violation of our women, deprivation and raids

Elections were rigged and ballots tampered with so as to ensure the PNC regime stayed in power to bring more suffering to Guyanese.

Men, women and children all suffered under PNC dictatorship for decades.

Under Burnham and Hoyte, Granger and some of his cohorts were active in this calculated evil and destruction of Guyanese and our country. Those are facts that cannot be changed.

To Granger, Nagamootoo, Ramjattan and Stabroek News: thousands and thousands of survivors are still here.

I’ve just stated a summary of past suffering. The survivors are telling their stories. Thank God for the PPP/C and those who are also telling our stories, not wanting people to forget the atrocities of the past.

If in other parts of the world people are remembering their past and I just highlighted two examples, why do the Opposition and Stabroek News want us to forget ours? I’ll tell you why.

They are trampling on the rights and sufferings of the people so that they can taste power.

One media house (name given) is out to overthrow a democratically elected Government. And when men like Granger and Nagamootoo don’t care a dime about people’s suffer-

ing, the thousands who have survived the PNC dictatorship, do they think they can govern a country? Granger and Nagamootoo don’t care and they have no compassion.

They have shown that only psychopaths don’t care about the suffering people endured but are only concerned with acquiring power. This is what Granger and his APNU and Nagamootoo and his AFC want – power!

The Opposition and Stabroek News are talking about corruption and charging politicians. I don’t have a problem with that. But let’s also start charging the Opposition people for their involvement in the mass suffering of the Guyanese people in the post-independence period. This is possible. The other countries are doing it.

We can still open a case against the Opposition for crimes against the Guyanese people. Their involvement in the suffering of Guyanese people is fairly recent. If they can prosecute those who were involved in the mass suffering and deaths of people, so can we.

I am encouraging all Guyanese and young people not to be deceived by the power-hungry Granger and Nagamootoo. Know your history well. I commend the PPP/C for their stance for all Guyanese who suffered.

Ramotar is a man of...

I found it grotesque that the Majority Opposition in the 10th Parliament slashed the National Budget three years in a row, sought to reduce President Ramotar’s Government to ineffective governance, and ignored the results of free and fair elections to terminate the five-year term of Government to three years, as happened with late former President Janet Jagan in 1998.

I sincerely believe that, in President Ramotar, Dr Roger Luncheon, Elizabeth Harper and some Ministers, the PPP/C accommodates the best leadership team as we move towards Guyana 2020.

While I cannot speak for the others named in Mr Bulkan’s letter to the press, I would want the goodly fellow to know that the PPP/C is a dynamic organization. It’s not static, flat or monotonous.

Like any organization of humans, it evolves, grows and matures. Organic, fluid and alive, the Party would obviously not stay the same way it was two years ago.

Much of what I wrote two years ago, or whenever, still obtains, but two things have happened to me in my engagement with Guyana: I am learning to see human nature at work instead of hanging on to rigid expectations, and my own views and feelings of Government and the PPP/C are evolving and growing. In fact, I am starting to develop a love for the PPP/C and its role in our history and making of our nation.

The imperfections of human nature within the Government and ruling Party, as with the Opposition, cause

me concern, but these are a work in progress.

At least with the PPP/C, despite deep ongoing distrust and resentment towards ‘outsiders’ like myself from some leaders and rank and file members, I see open engagement, authentic effort to heal our historical wounds, and a vibrant awareness of the Party’s shortcomings, even if such awareness leads to little actual corrective action, maybe because the Party, like all Guyana, faces a shortage of skills and options of loyal, committed workers.

I would urge Mr Bulkan to adopt an open, engaging, cooperative, collaborative stance as a respected leader in Guyana today, and to contribute his enormous business experience and knowledge to an unbiased, objective role as elder statesman and mentor and motivator.

My main concern for Guyana is our development as a global 21st century nation, not the quirks and weirdness of political animals and myopic minds. Those I ignore, seeking only to make a positive contribution. Mr Bulkan would serve us well with such a mindset.

So what drives me to align myself with the Government of Guyana and the PPP/C? That’s easy: it’s the open, engaging leadership style of President Ramotar, and the opportunity to actually make a contribution with my skills and talents to the future of my homeland, which the PPP/C, despite its many character flaws and human imperfections, accommodates with ease.

Marginalization was born and implemented by the PNC Dear Editor, When Marlon Cumberbatch can cleverly introduce African race marginalization in his letter of April 26 (in another section of the media) to blame the PPP/C and Indians for its birth and institutionalization, he must go back and relearn history.

Race marginalization was born and implemented by the PNC to destroy anything which stood in its path. The Cumberbatches enjoy full support from the "forget the past, and forgive them" supporters united within the APNU-AFC coalition.

The militants who are reaching back to retrieve their cultural roots also enjoy their Moses type leadership patronage. So who in Guyanese history has ever consistently nurtured and kept the course in the public defense of Indians to equal the aged onslaught from the usual suspects? You need a calculator?

Somehow, somewhere, some obviously lack missing screws preventing them from accepting who invent-

ed the policy of marginalization to overcome and win elections by race.

Cumberbatch unfairly blames the PPP/C Government and former President Jagdeo for all the ills of Black people. There is no end to such a debate, unless mechanisms are made by mutual agreement to fortify Indian ethnic security.

Our Cumberbatches seem to believe and behave that since Indians are the majority supporters of the PPP/C Government, then they are fair targets.

Let’s do the math to figure out how marginalization came about. Democratic elections in Guyana since organized parties were established found the PPP as the winner. The PPP which had a multiracial support was accused of winning elections by race because Forbes Burnham demanded to be made the PPP leader.

The Burnham faction broke away and took the majority of its Black supporters to form the PNC. In order to level the playing field, Indians were targeted.

It was either fight or flight

and many choose to leave Guyana.

The PNC increased the pressure by marginalizing Indians from the armed forces and civil service, kick down the door banditry, banning foodstuff, rape at the National Service and the whole works which need not be repeated.

With about 350,000 Guyanese forced out, mostly Indians, by PNC marginalization of the Portuguese, Chinese and of course the huge Indian population, how is the current PPP/C Government guilty of African marginalization and racism to make Indians guilty and automatic targets?

Why must Indians pay the heavy price for the return of the PNC under David Granger who many believe has blood on his hands in rigging elections, their organized starvation and exodus?

Why is Granger amassing those heavily trained former military soldiers whom he educated in the military to swear loyalty to him as the President and

not the state? Paramountcy of the PNC above the state is not imaginary. Both of the last two PNC party Congresses were rigged to ensure Granger remained as leader.

Does anyone comprehend the looming danger when Granger is believed to have been allegedly involved in rigging election since 1973 when all ballot boxes were seized and taken to the GDF headquarters?

Blame Dr Jagdeo all you want, but it does not change the facts. The PPP/C has done more for Africans in less time than the PNC has done in 28 years.

That the PPP/C will continue to be fair to all Guyanese is the right thing to do. But Indians must get their fair share, nothing less nothing more. Right now PNC marginalization of Indians is by an 11 percent gap, which many would sacrifice and sanctify unto Granger, who Indians really believe are the brains of their destruction and decay.

Come May 11, the APNU-AFC coalition (11 per cent plus 40 percent)

hopes to win, because Moses wants to become Prime Minister to give the PNC and Granger power forever.

Once Granger is President what prevents him from actively marginalizing more Indians to completely reverse the race equation.

Granger's PNC will have no need to rig elections, gun butt Indians, steal ballot boxes, increase crime, rapes and violence, etc because he can rule forever after this election. When you add the math of Guyana's destruction you will find that Indian marginalization was PNC policy and the mother of it all.

With Granger as President he can completely destroy the sugar and rice industries. The impact on the Indian population would be disastrous one would think?

Those who advocate among our brothers and sisters to "forgive and forget" what "grave danger Granger" had previously inflicted on Indians do not care what happens afterwards.

Many sincerely believe in live and let live. They are

free to do so in Guyana's current democracy. Should Granger and the PNC be forgiven? Those who bitterly accuse the PPP/C Government could first forgive themselves.

Dear Editor, Can GECOM kindly clarify whether a Government issued national ID is a requirement or optional when all branches of armed forces votes Saturday? Some prison officials who are unable to locate their registration card, would be allowed to vote.

Speaking to the small audience, at the Community Centre Ground, GTU Second Vice President Julian Cambridge said his message was about the meagre payments made to teachers and announced that the Union would be taking industrial action on Monday, May 4.

“We just can’t allow our teachers to continue to work in inhumane conditions; workers, you need to make wise decision,” Cambridge said.

In response, some work-

ers were faced with harsh conditions and in some instances, teachers have to fetch water to flush toilet, sit on broken chairs and share one table which he said was unacceptable.

Again, the crowd’s response was mixed.

Achievement Also addressing the rally was Region Two Chairman Parmanand Persaud, who urged workers to celebrate their achievements, noting that “the rally is getting smaller and smaller every year while the workforce is getting bigger”.

He congratulated all teachers across the region for their hard work in moulding the nation’s children over the years. He said owing to the teachers’ contributions Region Two was able to achieve excellent results at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. The Regional

Government, and teachers were being qualified under the present Government. “ The theme is right, Your vote is your power – workers vote right, this means you have to vote for a Government that transformed Guyana with better roads, streets, lights on the roadway, abundance of food in supermarkets, better health services, better ferry services, reliable electricity service, treated and potable water distribution and many other efficient services,” Persaud said.

Attending the meeting also was former Member of Parliament and PPP stalwart Isahack Basir.

During the course of the rally programme, greetings were extended to workers

by GAWU, GTU and GPSU representatives and those present were entertained by steel pan music provided by members of the New Opportunity Corps.

Youth, unemployment and selling citizenship

T

he economies of Caribbean C o m m u n i t y (Caricom) countries are not doing well. Belize, Guyana and Suriname are the only three countries whose economies are showing any appreciable growth. The major effect of little or no growth has been increasing unemployment and underemployment of young people, who constitute three of every five persons across the region.

The problem of youth unemployment and underemployment was emphasised at a Commonwealth Caribbean Ministerial Youth Conference in Antigua on April 28-30.

Without the prospect of jobs, young people are

becoming increasingly dissatisfied and disenchanted. Their discontent manifests itself, in some instances, in gangs, crime and violence.

In other cases, where young people have graduated from higher education and cannot find jobs, they have either migrated depriving their countries of qualified persons, or they accept any job they can get, but brood over their circumstances. In any event, the situation of youth unemployment and underemployment is a boiling cauldron in the Caribbean.

The solution to the problem rests in the creation of jobs that are sustainable.

Such job creation requires investment and particu-

larly foreign investment.

New businesses have to be formed and economies have to be diversified from traditional areas of production that have depended on preferential markets and subsidies.

The region could be a much more attractive area for investment in goods and services if it were a truly single market with a customs union. Foreign investors would be more greatly attracted to a larger regional market than to the individual small markets of most Caricom countries. It would be one effective way of creating a larger economic space for the employment of young people. (Excerpt from Caribbean 360)

he Georgetown Chambers of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Thursday launched its second Business Guyana Magazine, while highlighting the need for a strengthened Private Sector to further boost the country’s economy.

Speaking at the launching ceremony at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown, GCCI’s President Lance Hinds stated that this second edition of the magazine came at a time when the Chambers is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

He noted that GCCI continues to be the leading voice as Guyana’s economy evolves and overcomes the challenges thrown in its path. In order to fulfill its mandate, he said the Chambers believe it must provide an environment for business opportunities, business expansion and investments to prosper which will not only benefit investors but the country as a whole.

According to Hinds, the Private Sector must continue to expand in order for the economy to deliver revenues and job creation, which are critical to the country’s future as well as the Private Sector. He noted that the Business Guyana Magazine contains credible information and decision-making factors about investing in Guyana. It was designed to be easily read and interpreted, while containing information to stimulate and excite, he added.

The GCCI President further noted that the magazine also details a comprehensive view about Guyana’s economy and the perspective of the Private Sector. “In the magazine in the past, we continue

to recognised highlights and celebrate the achievements of members of the Private Sector in general and the Chamber in particular,” he remarked.

Hinds said that this is the pillar of the Chambers, “because if our role is to support the growth, revolution and sustain the Private Sector, it is important that we recognised all

fair election, while urging politicians to desist from succumbing to provocation.

“It is vital that every one of the political parties avoid inflamed passion and the use of provocative and disrespectful language.

They should also ensure that supporters, and those speaking on their behalf, follow those same guidelines…,” he outlined.

Caricom committed to customs harmonisation

egional customs officials have agreed to finalise regulations to support harmonized customs legislation for the region.

During a meeting that ended on Thursday, custom officials, legal experts and Caribbean Community (Caricom) representatives signalled their commitment to unlocking the region’s collective trading potential.

“Closure on this process will see finalised regulations submitted first

to the relevant Caricom meeting bodies for their approval, then to national Governments for consideration alongside the Draft Bill to harmonise customs,” stated a release, issued at the end of the meeting .

“A number of major advantages of the harmonised reform package include a strengthened, standardised complaints system for aggrieved traders that will engender greater accountability; a single, identical electronic form for the region’s cus-

toms brokers to improve accuracy and facilitate the generation of reliable data; and the simplification of bureaucratic processes resulting in reduced waiting periods for traders”, said Bernard Black, of the Caricom Secretariat.

The effective development and application of a harmonised customs policy and legislation for the region remains an important step in achieving the goals of the Caricom Single Market and Economy. (The

Sarwan to lead Demerara NSC mourns passing of Calvin Roberts T in May Day Cup – all arrangements in place, says Beharry

ormer Guyana and West Indies Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan will lead Demerara in the May Day Cup feature T20 game against Berbice. The one-day event is billed for today at the historic Albion Sports Complex from 10:00h.

While the Demerara squad is yet to be confirmed, national senior opener Rajendra Chandrika and youth opener Brian Sattaur are the other two players confirmed to be part of the team.

Prior to the feature game, the event will see the clash between four exciting zone teams from the county of Berbice – West

Berbice, New Amsterdam/ Canje, Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne/Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC).

Matches will be 15 oversa-side with two semi-finals and the grand final.

The Berbice winners will take home a trophy and $100,000, the runnerup $50,000, and the two losing semi-finalists $25,000 each. The Man of the Match will also receive a trophy and

$10,000.

Following the cricket, Shakti Strings Orchestra, accompanied by the popular Crown Vibes International, will entertain the crowd during the big after-party lime.

Tickets cost $1000, with children under 12 admitted free.

On Friday, Chief Coordinator Anil Beharry told this publication that all arrangements were in place for today’s event.

Proceeds from this event will be donated to the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) to carry out its work in preparation for the 2015 elections and beyond.

anje Knights outplayed a hapless Rose Hall Town Jammers (60-40) at the Fyrish Court on Sunday as action in the MPG Packaging Plant Basketball Tournament continued.

Led by three-point specialist Steve Roopnarine (28 points), Canje took a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to 34-17 when the half-time whistle came.

The Jammers were able to reduce the lead to 43-29 by the end of the third quarter, but by then the writing was

on the wall.

Roopnarine received great assistance from Rayon Emanuel (14 points), who created excellent passes leaving the Jammers’ defence helpless. Cedwin Cort supported the cause with eight points.

In the losing cause, Kevon Wiggins scored 14 points, Edmond Wiggins nine points and Michael King six points.

The Jammers have three points from their two games, while Canje are also on three points with one game to play.

Hopetown Stealers are yet to register a point and

will play their final game against Canje. The two teams will meet in a semi-final playoff for Zone A. Meanwhile, the competition continues on Sunday when Fyrish Black Sharks take on Ithaca Hardliners in a Zone B encounter.

The death of Calvin Robert, due to kidney failure, has indeed sent shock waves across journalistic and sports communities.

The 43-year-old father grew up in the West Ruimveldt neighbourhood.

Calvin excelled at youth cricket as a left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pacer. His ability saw him playing SecondDivision Cricket for South Georgetown and Under-16

cricket for Malteenoes Sports Club. He also served as captain of the Guyana Media Team where he led by example with both bat and ball. One of his memorable moments in cricket is when Calvin shattered the stumps of former Guyana wicketkeeper/batsman Sheik Mohamed, at Enmore in a T20 game.

As a journalist, his written work had realised many ground breaking, insightful and analytical articles, particularly in the area of sports. His investigative approach and reflective writing had captured, in many ways, a sense of thoroughness concerning the activities being covered.

Calvin’s willingness to be ever present at sports events and to have a firsthand view of activities as they occurred, coupled with a writing style which highly positioned the events or

participants, continuously demanded the attention of readers. Some of the hundreds of stories done by him have thoroughly impacted, in a dynamic way, on sports in Guyana and the Caribbean.

His completion of over seven hundred stories during 2012 saw him convincingly capturing the Sports Journalist – Print Award at the National Sports Awards Ceremony 2012.

At the time of his death, Calvin held the position of Senior Sports Reporter at the Guyana Chronicle. His loss has saddened all and sundry.

The National Sports Commission wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to his wife and children, extended family, all his cricket colleagues and captured readers.

May his soul have eternal rest.

Windies batting struggles not due to bad pitches - Richards

indies batting legend Sir Vivian Richards has dismissed the notion of a poor standard of batting surfaces in the Test series so far as the regional team head into tomorrow’s final match against England.

Bolt to run at Golden Spike in May Trinidad authorities support Narine after BCCI ban

sain Bolt will compete again at the Golden Spike in the Czech city of Ostrava in May. Organizers said the Jamaican great will run the 200 meters on May 26 at the meet, which is part of the IAAF world challenge series. They said it will be his only European meet in the first part of the season.

The six-time Olympic champion will race for the seventh time at the meet, and returns after a two-year break.

“I look forward to the race and coming back to run in the new stadium for the first time,” Bolt said.

Some have suggested that the bout is happening five years too late, because Mayweather, 38, of Las Vegas, and the 36-yearold Filipino icon Pacquiao would have been closer to their primes had the showdown taken place when it was initially being planned for in March 2010. But then negotiation breakdowns over how drug testing would be conducted caused the fight to be scrapped, setting off years of back-and-forth, lots of hard feelings, and fan and media frustration.

Yet, here they are five years later -- with a lot of water under the bridge -and the fight is every bit as significant as it would have been back then, if not more so.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are still fighting to unify welterweight world titles; Mayweather owns two and Pacquiao one.

They are also fighting for pound-for-pound supremacy. Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs), who has won world titles in five weight classes, is universally considered the No. 1 fighter in the world pound-for-pound. Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs), the only fighter in boxing history to win world titles in eight divisions, is right behind him at No. 2, having overcome a scandalous decision loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. and a one-punch knockout to Juan Manuel Marquez since the first negotiation cratered five years ago.

Mayweather and Pacquiao will be fighting to be known as the king of their era, having beaten all the other stars of their time in and around their weight class, including common opponents Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Ricky Hatton and Marquez (against whom Pacquiao is 2-1-1).

“We’ve faced all the top guys,” Mayweather said. “I believe in my skills, I believe in myself and I believe I’m going to be victorious.

Manny is a very interesting fighter. To get where he’s gotten to, it’s obvious he’s had to do something right.”

And then there is all that money. Mayweather, who will receive the lion’s share of the 60-40 split between the sides, believes he could earn as much as $200 million. Earning well over $150 million is a lock. Pacquiao also is likely to earn nine figures. Both will earn far more on Saturday than they would have if they had met in 2010.

“Five years ago, this was a $50 million fight for me,” Mayweather said. “I want you [media] guys to say Floyd is the smart one [for waiting].”

Pacquiao said the fiveyear wait was worth it.

“I have not changed in my body in the last five years. I think the changes are that I have more experience now, better strategy and smarter movement,” he said. “The speed and power has not changed.”

Pacquiao said his losses did not get him down; rather, they made him work harder.

“I don’t get discouraged anymore with a loss in boxing,” Pacquiao said. “It is a part of the game, and I have taken the losses and have made myself a better fighter. It’s about building yourself up and turning yourself into a better fighter.”

he final score was 8434 when the Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Tournament concluded at the Mackenzie Hard Court on Wednesday evening.

Terron Welch was a beast, scoring close to half of his team’s total points with his 41-point effort to lead the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) to victory over Mackenzie High School (MHS).

Welch was a one-man army, getting to the rim at will and hitting jumpers with

regularity as MHS could not figure out a way to cool him down.

The fact that none of MHS’s usual offensive players managed to score double figures speaks of the mammoth meltdown they endured.

Kerlon Cadogan had eight points, while Revon Bradford and Lennox Henry finished with six points apiece.

MHS simply could not convert on their offensive possessions and fell victim to their high turnover rate.

Though low-scoring, the third-place game pro-

vided more of a competition: Christianburg Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) edging New Silver City Secondary (40-36) as Daniel Lee put in 12 points, and Akinni Wilson 10. Donovan Paddy scored 12 points for New Silver City.

Welch was adjudged Scoring Champion and Most Valuable Player of the final for his individual performance that also included nine rebounds and 10 steals.

Welch also collected a ‘Most Assist’ award in the final prize-giving ceremony.

ew Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) topped Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) 86-18 in the New Amsterdam Zone of the Berbice Conference of the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG)-organised school basketball tournament, which continued on Tuesday.

David Hope had 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Rayon Emanuel scored 16

points and 9 rebounds for NATI. In the losing effort, Shamar France scored five points with four rebounds.

In the second game of the double header, Vrymen’s Erven Secondary (VESS) went down to Berbice High School (BHS) 34-69. BHS’ Nicholas Patoir registered 22 points and four assists, while Akeem Tucker scored 11 points, five assists and 11 rebounds.

In the losing effort, Mark Wilson scored 17 points with eight rebounds for VESS. The zone is being matched on a league basis, with each school playing the others twice. Teams will receive three points for each win and the team finishing with the most points will earn the right to play against the winner of the Corentyne Zone for the Berbice Championship on June 28.

In-form Lowden soars to Over-45 Singles title B

erbician veteran tennis player Godfrey Lowden, who was crowned Assuria’s Men’s Over-35 Singles champion just two days ago, engraved his veteran champion seal when he took the Over45 Singles champion from Carlos Adams once again on Wednesday at the Nash Tennis Court.

The two players treated the small gathering of spectators once again to a display of heavy tactical and aggressive play.

Adams strategically tried to anchor his game at the centre of the court and net, playing deep cross courts and forcing Lowden to move about on the baseline. This strategy paid off since Adams initially won more points volleying at the net.

However, Lowden’s aggressive ground strokes made his game more solid.

He had 17 winners (10 on the forehand and seven on the backhand) and a margin of six unforced errors, while Adams had six winners and 11 unforced errors. Overall, Lowden made full opportunity of Adams second serve and consistently attacked it.

In the first set, Lowden took a commanding 5-1 lead, but Adams was able to advance with a more consistent serve to win the next two games. Lowden made no hesitation and used his version of big serves to close the set with a love service game, giving him the first set at 6-3.

The second set provided similar excitement.

Lowden’s service game was pushed to breaking point with six deuces, but Adams failed to convert the break point and Lowden took a 2-0 lead.

Adams who is in his 60s came up with excellent footwork and placement to launch a shift in momentum to even the score at 3-3.

However, Lowden took control and secured the second set at 6-3 to clench yet a second championship title, the Assuria Men’s Over-45 Singles winner.

It was remarkable to see players in their 50s and 60s compete with great agility and fitness. With the evolution of the game more players guard the baseline and

he Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has expressed profound sadness at the passing of Guyana Chronicle Sports Journalist Calvin Roberts who took his final breath on Tuesday evening during emergency surgery at the Davis Memorial Hospital.

The full statement read as follows: The members, executive and staff of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) are deeply saddened by the passing of senior sports journalist Calvin Roberts.

Calvin played an important role in highlighting the works of the GCB over the years. His love for cricket

cannot be debated; he was willing to partake in any event to promote the development of the game.

We could have called on Calvin at any time; he never hesitated to get word of our undertakings, issues and other news out to the public.

He was also a qualified electronic scorer whom the Board relied on for regional and international tournaments.

We admired his deep passion, dedication and positive personality. We considered it a privilege to have known him and work with him. He was our ‘Sports Journalist of the Year’ in 2013, an award he earned through his excellent work. He has surely left a high standard for his peers to follow.

We knew that Calvin was sick but was hoping that he would recover; the news of his death floored us all, we can only imagine the depth of grief his family members are in at the moment.

The GCB would like to express our deepest sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues; they are in our thoughts and prayers.

He congratulated Carlos on a good game but he knows that there can be a higher level of play by his friend and looks forward to more finals in the near future.

wo female students of the Enterprise Primary School on Thursday received some football gear from Capitol News Sports Journalist Esan Griffith.

Allieh Alleyne and Deekole Douglas were the recipients of a pair of football cleats, a pair of football hose and a ball each.

Both 11-year-olds were the only females to participate in the Courts Pee Wee School Football Tournament, which is organised by the Petra Organisation.

Griffith highlighted that the gesture was simply an “investment in the future of Guyana’s women’s football”.

In addition, Griffith noted, “upon seeing them play

as the only two females, and Alleyne was very good, they were playing without any gear and this is just my way of encouraging them to continue the sport.

They don’t get to train, so I would hope that other businesses would come forward to help these kids because they are the future,” Griffith stressed.

The fight of the century is here!

or more than five years, boxing fans clamored for one fight -- a showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, the two best fighters of their time -that seemed like it would never happen.

At long last, after excruciating will-they-or-won’t-they negotiations spread out over years and a chance meeting between the fighters at a Miami Heat basketball game in January that helped grease the wheels toward finalizing a deal in late February, the fight the world has waited for is finally at hand.

It is one of the most an-

ticipated fights in history, and it will be the biggest economic event boxing has ever known, worth an estimated $400 million in expected revenue.

“One thing is clear -- it’s the biggest fight of this century,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, who promoted Mayweather for the first 10 years of his career before a falling-out that was one of the reasons the fight was so difficult to make.

“It was probably the most difficult fight to make that I’ve been a part of. It took five years to make.”

Many have called the fight the Super Bowl of boxing, but the Super Bowl happens every year. Mayweather-Pacquiao might happen only once, so the eyes of the sports world will be on a 20-foot-by-20-foot boxing ring inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night (Showtime PPV/

HBO PPV, 9 ET) as they finally meet in the latest so-called “fight of the century.”

“Everything takes time, it’s all about timing,” Mayweather said this week.

“I’m glad that we had patience and didn’t rush. The time is now. This is the right time for this fight.”

ngland captain Alistair Cook stroked his first Test hundred in two years and the 100th at historic Kensington Oval, but a brace of wickets from seamers Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel, gave West Indies the edge on the opening day of the third Test here Friday.

Opting to bat first, the visitors finished the day on 240 for seven, with Cook carving out 105 – his 26th Test century – before falling to the second ball of the day’s final over.

Left-hander Moeen Ali chimed in with 58 while the in-form Joe Root hit 33 and Ben Stokes, 22, but England were not allowed to build partnerships as West Indies struck at critical intervals to limit their progress.

Holder, who grabbed both his wickets prior to lunch, finished with two for 34 while Gabriel was again impressive in taking two for 36.

With his batsmen getting starts but failing to convert, it was left up to Cook to hold the innings together in a knock spanning just over six hours and 266 deliveries, and including 12 fours.

He was forced to spearhead several recovery efforts.

For Trott, it was the third time in the series he had fallen without scoring and his fourth single digit score in five outings.

England then crawled to 22 for one after the first hour as Cook and fellow left-hander Gary Ballance repaired the innings but Holder struck

twice in quick succession following the drinks break, to put West Indies in control.

Ballance had made 18 and added 38 with Cook when Holder breached his defence with a full length delivery that came back to pluck out his middle stump, in the fourth over after the break.

With no runs added in his next over, Holder accounted for the dangerous Ian Bell without scoring, moving to his left to claim a two-handed return catch after the righthander drove airily.

Cook and Root saw England safely to lunch on 71 for three and the right-handed Root, unbeaten on 17 at lunch the break, moved nicely along afterward, taking two leg-side boundaries off the ineffective left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul who proved expensive.

However, Root then perished at Permaul’s hands 25 minutes after the restart, cutting at an innocuous delivery and edging a catch through to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, after facing 35 balls and counting five fours.

The session nonetheless belonged to England as Cook and Moeen denied the Windies any further success

with the best partnership of the innings.

Moeen played freely, getting off the mark with a boundary to cover off Permaul before lifting the same bowler to the long on boundary a couple of overs later.

He was unbeaten on 37 at the tea break with Cook on 60, and raised his half-century about half-hour after the resumption when he cleared the mid-wicket ropes with part-time off-spinner Marlon Samuels.

Both batsmen looked well set for big scores when without warning, Moeen was run out attempting a sharp single.

Cook cut Samuels straight to debutant Shai Hope at point and set off, and the fielder’s return to Ramdin found Moeen well short of his ground.

All told, Moeen faced 130 balls in 2-1/4 hours and counted eight fours and a six.

Stokes hung around for just over an hour and hit three fours and was building another partnership with Cook, before falling in the sixth over with the new ball.

He looked to cut Gabriel, in the third over of a third spell, and found Hope at gully.

Cook, meanwhile, remained steadfast, pulling

Gabriel for four to move into the 90s before clipping the same bowler to the mid-wicket boundary four overs later, to reach triple figures.

There was disappointment for the England skipper, however, as he fell in the day’s final over from Samuels, under-edging a cut for Ramdin to take a smart catch. (CMC)
