Rohee slams WPA members for betraying Walter Rodney

eople’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Clement Rohee believes certain executive members of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) such as Dr Rupert Roopnaraine, David Hinds, Dr Clive Thomas and Dr Maurice Odle have lost all right to speak glowingly about Dr Walter Rodney.

In observation of the 36th anniversary of the assassination of Dr Rodney on Monday, Rohee strongly criticised those persons for betraying his legacy by now being staunch affiliates of the People’s National Congress-led A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Government.

“Those who shamefully pretend to be Rodney worshippers and admirers must be exposed for what they are; no more than a cabal of pretenders and hypocrites who have long betrayed Dr Rodney’s legacies, having sold themselves like Judases for handsome monetary rewards and perks handed to them by those who have Rodney’s blood on their hands,” Rohee declared during his weekly press conference at Freedom House.

The politician discredited the messages those individuals released in memory of Dr Rodney in observance of this day. According to Rohee, their “high sounding” messages are nothing but duplicitous.

In this regard, he posited that the best way to commemorate Dr Rodney’s death anniversary would be for the government to lay the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) report in the National Assembly for debate.

“The PPP supports the findings in the Report and

will reject any attempt to either water-down the recommendations or denigrate those who contributed to the Commission’s work,” he stated.

PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira had signalled her intentions to lay a motion in the National Assembly for there to be a debate on the report’s findings and for the House to adapt the recommendations made in the report in an effort to prevent any future recurrence of what took place when Dr Rodney was murdered.

The recent CoI report confirmed the long-held belief that the PNC government was the mastermind of the assassination of Dr Rodney.

Government officials however have since contended that the findings of the report are severely flawed.

President David Granger and Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams have both discredited the findings, indicating that there was some agenda to target the People’s National Congress (PNC).

Region Five Chairman Vickchand Ramphal told Guyana Times that the regional administration is continuing to monitor the situation. He related that in the villages of Trafalgar, Lovely Lass and Union, the most of the floodwaters have receded. This only oc-

observed that the medical team which was deployed to the indigenous settlement of Moraikobai to assist in the prevention of waterborne diseases did not find any outbreaks. This deployment was in response to reports that persons in that village had complained of itches about the body. Ramphal stated that Moraikobai was still under water.

gional team visited several communities along the Mahaicony River, most of which were flooded. The Chairman told this newspaper that because of the flooding in Moraikobai, villages such as Mora Point, Pine Ground and Gordon Table were also flooded.

Many farmers in these villages said that they have lost some of their cash crops.

Two weeks ago, reports surfaced of flooding in Lovely Lass, as a result of a faulty pump which was installed by MMA/ADA. It was noted that the heavy downpours caused this situation to escalate to the point where some of the roads had began to deteriorate under the floodwaters.

The bitter fruits of hate

A

s the world reels from the shock of 50 persons from the LGBT community in Florida being slaughtered like shooting fish in a barrel, we have to examine the systemic factors at work in the US and apply them in our small country to ensure such an event never occurs here again. And while it may surprise some to see the word "again" used, that simply means we have forgotten, or refuse to confront, the madness of Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek. On a per capita basis, they outweigh the Florida horror.

The question on everyone's lips is "Why?" In these matters, we have to distinguish between "proximate and ultimate causes". With the shooter in Florida, we can cite, as his ex-wife did, his mental instability and the men kissing each other that triggered his evidently deep hatred for homosexuals. But even if we look at the two presidential terms of Obama, we can examine 16 mass killings that might offer us a clue of the ultimate causes.

We have given this exhaustive list over the last seven years, to show that the mass shootings in the US are as representative as you can get geographically. They are not, however, representative by gender when it comes to the killers: these are overwhelmingly male. Each of the mass killers used guns to exterminate their victims. But these are the "external" variables: what about their frame of mind that goes to deeper causes? In each incident, while the killers were facilitated by the easy accessibility of guns in the US, more pertinently, they were motivated by hate.

Hate is a very strong emotion and in the end, it occurs when we separate the objects of our hatred from our common humanity in a special instance of a process called "othering". As humans, we have inbuilt physiological mechanisms that make us differentiate ourselves from "others". Unless we are taught to respect differences in our early socialisation process, only to the extent we see commonalities we consider important beneath the difference, we might tolerate the other.

But if one is taught to see specific differences as "evil" or "beyond the pale", then the other is "dehumanised" in a hate-cathected continuum that in the end justifies using violence to exterminate them. And this is the process we find in common in most of the mass killings in the US. Whether it was a case of slaughtering college students, African-Americans, or gay Americans, the individuals wanted to make a "point" about their hatred.

But hatred spreads easier in a climate of dehumanisation that is spread by leaders about others.

During different periods of history this was taken to its limits when whole groups were exterminated – from the Jews of Germany to the Tutsis of Rwanda. In America today, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been dehumanising Muslims and immigrants, much as some Guyanese were dehumanised with devastating consequences between 2002 and 2008.

We must eradicate guns and hate.

Dear Editor, Have we brought to power a discriminatory Government?

Surely, so!

Editor, I urge you and our readers to continue reading for details. Ms Volda Lawrence, Minister of Human Services and Social Protection within recent weeks publicly condemned the high incidence of murders originating from domestic violence. Rightly so!

However, a colossal problem that desperately deserves similar attention is the alarming murder rate racked up through brutal crime (street robberies, burglaries, etc), a problem to which Ms Lawrence turns a blind eye. How inhumane!

Ms Lawrence castigates domestic violence because she wants solutions and rightly so. However, Ms Lawrence lacks enthusiasm condemning the horrendous crime situation which engulfs this country.

Criminals largely go after and kill a certain segment of the population, but Ms Lawrence remains silent.

It is hard not to conclude that Ms Lawrence discriminates against this segment of people.

Certainly, if Ms Lawrence were impartial, she would have publicly denounced crime. This is damning testimony that Ms Lawrence lacks consistency managing the welfare

of Guyanese. Such prejudicial behaviours irrefutably paint Ms Lawrence as divisive, toxic and injurious. Editor, what can account for Ms Lawrence’s behaviour?

Categorically, Ms Lawrence is a partisan woman who shows no consideration, to say the least.

Considering Ms Lawrence’s less-than-desirable character I wonder why the APNU/ PNC/AFC Government does not disavow such a person; then again an autocratic Government will never hold its friends and family culpable. Besides, discrimination is a trademark of this Government.

Ms Lawrence’s discriminatory behaviour is untenable, particularly considering that domestic violence and crime are problems which come under the jurisdiction of her Ministry and they share common root causes which include – lack of respect for others, poor parenting, mental illness, substance of abuse, etc.

This then prompts the obvious and logical question: why Ms Lawrence chose to address domestic violence but not crime? Her inconsistency makes no sense and it is quite disturbing.

Ms Lawrence is obviously handicapped by politics which leaves her in a pickle to explain such one-sided actions. Ms Lawrence even

rocks a thriving portfolio cataloguing discriminatory utterances such as: the rape of a child is a family issue.

Ms Lawrence, may I ask: since when this is the case?

Such one-sided theatrics by Ms Lawrence plays into the definition of discrimination.

Ms Lawrence needs to be reminded that every taxpayer pays her salary irrespective of race/ethnicity or political affiliations. As such, Ms Lawrence owes it to all Guyanese to be impartial.

Furthermore, such rampant discrimination within the APNU/PNC/AFC Government, in the face of a heightened era of enlightenment is unnecessary and disgraceful. Very unfortunate!

Discrimination within Government ranges from its unfair hiring and firing practices to its lack of inclusiveness at the jubilee celebration, among a string of others which create an intense aura of dysfunction.

Government needs to be reminded of its constitutional and human rights obligations: it must protect and provide for every Guyanese, irrespective of racial or political affiliations or otherwise.

Anything different suffers human beings and destroys our country which is exactly what Government is doing.

Undoubtedly, the APNU/ PNC/AFC Government

stymies the coalescing of Guyanese through its discriminatory practices, even though it rode a mantra of unity to power, only leaving the singular conclusion that its posture on such is bogus.

In the face of this, it makes no sense that Government runs a Social Cohesion Ministry (Department). It is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars. Given Government’s discriminatory posture, it is unlikely that it will ever respond to our pains, particularly those emanating from the heart-wrenching crime situation.

U n a r g u a b l y , Government’s discriminatory tones, as marked by Ms Lawrence’s silence on crime and President Granger’s undemocratic refusal to release the names of criminals pardoned, effectively embolden criminals and drive up the crime rate.

Government’s divisive behaviours need to be eschewed to allow us what we rightfully deserve as human beings. I urge my fellow Guyanese not to back down from our fight against a one-sided Government. We must remember that we, the people, are endowed with the ultimate power to not return such a Government to power. And this we will do.

Dear Editor, With reference to a Guyana Times June 13, 2016 article where Alim Shah’s store was targeted.

Dr Rupert Roopnaraine played an important role in the return to democracy in Guyana. He has earned a great deal of respect from the Guyanese populace because of his struggle against

a dictatorship. I was deeply shocked at his Ministry’s targeting of Ryan Shah a PPP/ PNC critic and an Indian rights activist.

Shah’s business establishment has provided affordable clothing materials since the 1940s in Georgetown and Berbice. Most poorer classes of Guyanese, who cannot afford “ready-made” clothes,

shop at Alim Shah’s store.

This establishment is well known in Berbice and the owner is well respected in the business and religious community.

The Ministry of Education has a tainted history of corruption. The procurement of computers and textbook frauds were exposed a few years ago. Now

we are witnessing political directives to target persons who openly express themselves against the APNU/ AFC Government.

This is not what Guyanese voted for and certainly not what we expected from Dr Roopnaraine’s Ministry.

Denial of factual issues Dear Editor, It has become the norm for government officials in this country to deny factual issues when they are raised in the hope that some people will believe their denials and if not, at least they can live in that belief that all is well under their watch.

So it came as no surprise to me when I read the Director of Health in Region 6, Javaughn Stephen, in the Stabroek News dated June 13, refuting my letter to the press with regards to the appalling conditions existing at the New Amsterdam Hospital in addition to the shortage of drugs and x-ray films.

At the last RDC meeting which was held on Thursday 2, June, 2016 in the RDC’s boardroom, I outlined and highlighted everything which I wrote in the press. The media houses were there and so was Stephen.

At that meeting, I highlighted the shortage of vital medications, shortage of gloves and syringes, animals being in wards, shortage of reagents at the lab, elective surgeries not being done because of issues with theatre beds and the anaesthetic machine and shortage and poor supply of x-ray films (x-rays were not being done for all cases).

Moreover, at the Health Committee meeting which was held prior to this, the CEO, Bynoe, and the Director Stephen acknowledged the dire situation at the Hospital and blamed the tendering process and the MMU. I reported this

response in my letter.

Stephen though has admitted one issue mentioned in my letter: the issues of cats and dogs but tried to spin his way out. But what is strange is that he made mention of what was done under the previous PPP/C government but has miserably failed to mention what he as the Director of Health is doing to get rid of dogs and cats in the wards!

Stephen also tried to justify this issue by stating that diseases give out odours that only dogs can smell, hence the attraction to hospitals. This is so ridiculous that it borders on insanity! If such be the case then we can expect to see dogs following sick persons home! However, I have not seen any dogs in wards at any other medical facilities.

The hospital is not a fish and meat market yet there are more cats and dogs at New Amsterdam Hospital than at the Port Mourant market!

Moreover, while ‘outreach’ programmes are commendable, I would like Director Stephen to also focus on the health service ‘within reach’ - moreso since the New Amsterdam Hospital is an arm’s length from his office!

However, the intent of Stephen is quite clear. It is simply to cover up the ineptitude of the officials attached to the Health Sector in Berbice since it has now become clear after one year that their political qualifications precede their management skills. Even a square peg can sort of fit in a round hole after constant

pushing but not so in this case!

At this point I would like to refute an inaccurate statement made by Stephen at the last RDC meeting: He claimed that Dr Ali, who was allegedly assaulted by CEO Bynoe, retracted his allegations and apologised to the CEO. I personally called Dr Ali who said that he never apologised and he did not retract his statement against the CEO. The doctor is still awaiting the appropriate response from the Minister of Health.

Where the health and well-being of our citizens are concerned we must always endeavour to be truthful and fearless - let the chips fall where they may!

This see-sawing of the drugs shortage is a wellknown and irrefutable fact throughout this country and one that cannot be blown away by denials. The government must act decisively to bring resolutions to the problems plaguing the health sector.

The health sector has been a dismal failure after one year in office. The appointment of incompetent persons has also drastically worsened the situation.

In conclusion, I have nothing to gain personally or politically, it is my intent that the health sector is improved so that the residents of Region 6 can enjoy a better delivery of health service.

The garbage dumping problem Dear Editor, Earlier this month I was walking through an area in Queens, New York, which is inhabited mostly

by Guyanese immigrants and their families. I was most impressed by the complete absence of garbage on the streets, drains and wellkept lawns. The entire surrounding was indeed a joy to behold especially with the manicured lawns, lovely flowers and clean cars parked in an obviously welldisciplined manner.

I also saw the signpost shown at left above: it made me wonder to what extent the severity of the fine for dumping (US$20,000) and/ or the offer of a reward for reporting dumpers might be responsible for the cleanliness that was so strikingly evident.

As I continued my walk my mind raced to the scenes of wanton garbage disposal back home in Guyana and more especially the mindboggling sights along the streets on which I usually walk in the mornings whenever I overnight at Enmore, East Coast Demerara.

pictured at the top of this page which is surrounded by the kind of garbage shown at right above next to the Enmore signpost.

Some striking features of the signpost at Enmore include the fact that the fine of G$10,000 is miniscule compared with the US$20,000 fine shown in the NY sign and there is no financial incentive for conscientious Guyanese citizens to report callous dumpers.

Furthermore, the Enmore signpost is just around the corner from the Enmore Police Station, virtually under the nose and in the face of the policemen. This is particularly relevant having regard to the point made by another letter writer last week who quoted copiously from relevant legislation which empowers the police to apprehend dumpers and the courts to impose fines and other deterrents.

While I have used the negative Enmore scene as a contrast with the situation in New York just to make a point, let me clarify that based on my travels across Guyana, the Enmore scene

is by no means unique; it is undoubtedly a reflection of what obtains throughout our beloved but apparently bewitched “dear land of Guyana”! Indeed, I have seen, ad nauseam, ad infinitum, garbage strewn and piled up high just under the warning signs like the Enmore one shown above.

I have no doubt that other compatriots have seen similar or worse cases across our coastland and cities.

Sometimes the ‘big stick’ as in New York and as is provided for in our environmental protection legislation is the only deterrent!

Enforcement is obviously necessary.

Notwithstanding, I wish to encourage all our school teachers, our parents and all civic-minded citizens to continue to do whatever each of us can do to achieve the attitudinal metamorphosis necessary to raise a new generation of citizens who will instinctively, naturally balk at the thought of dumping garbage as callously as is obvious in the picture above.

I

t's graduation season.

Among students graduating with highest honours, have you noticed that the girls now greatly outnumber the boys? How come?

I recently visited a school where the 10th-Grade English teacher asked all her students to write a story about anything they liked.

One boy chose to write about the battle of Stalingrad, November 1942, from the perspective of a Russian soldier. The Russian soldier was patrolling a street when he was ambushed by a German soldier. The Russian soldier fired his rifle at point-blank range into the face of the German. The boy then described what happens when a soldier fires a rifle into another man’s face. The head explodes: a piece of chin goes this way, a piece of skull goes that way, a chunk of eyeball goes another way.

This boy was suspended from school. His parents were told that he would not be permitted to return until the parents obtained an evaluation by a licensed professional, assuring the school that he posed no imminent danger to himself or to others.

When the parents shared this story with me, it struck a chord, because I myself wrote a similar story.

Boys have always written stories about traumatic amputation and violent death. In 1977, writing such a story might earn

you an award, as it did for me. Today, it may earn you a suspension. The girl who wrote a story about how she felt when she wasn’t invited to the party was commended. The boy who wrote about the Battle of Stalingrad was disciplined. Boys doing things that boys have always done now gets boys in trouble. Schools have become less friendly to boys.

I thought of the boy who wrote the story about the

battle of Stalingrad while reading a recent paper examining changes in the gender gap in academic achievement since the 1980s.

American girls have always earned slightly better grades than American boys.

But in the past three decades, the gender gap at the top of the distribution has

widened: American boys are now markedly under-represented among those earning As. The scholars titled their paper “Leaving Boys Behind: gender disparities in high academic achievement.”

Why aren’t boys keeping up with girls? There are multiple factors in play. One factor is surely that the average school today is less welcoming to boys and to the kind of stories some boys

like to write. But that’s not the whole story. As a practising physician, and as a PhD psychologist who sees these boys and listens to what they have to say, I am convinced that another factor is video games. Many boys, probably most boys, want to feel that they have conquered, that they have tri-

umphed against great odds.

I’ve been a medical doctor for 30 years. If a boy wanted to gain that feeling of accomplishment 30 years ago, he actually had to accomplish something in the real world.

Many boys today boast to me about their achievements in Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty the way a boy 30 years ago might have boasted about his achievements in track and field.

Another factor is the normalisation of pornography in the life of teenage boys.

For most of recorded history, a young man’s desire for sexual intimacy with a young woman has been a major motivator for a young man. The young man wanted to “make something of himself” partly in order to impress young women and improve his odds of achieving sexual satisfaction. As pornography replaced actual intimacy in the lives of many young men, that motivation shifted, away from the real world and into the make-believe world of porn.

This change isn’t confined to scrawny geeks who are unable to find a willing partner. John Mayer, a pop star whose previous girlfriends include Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, proudly told Rolling Stone magazine that he is “the new generation of masturbator”: he now prefers online pornography over actual sexual intimacy with actual women.

This is the new normal. For many boys (though not all) it undermines the motivation to achieve in the real world.

Effective study and learning habits

Parents and carers can help reduce the exam stress of their child by helping them establish effective study and learning habits: Help your child find a quiet place to study without distractions. Make sure their table is uncluttered so they can focus better.

Encourage your child to find out exactly what the test involves – are there past test papers they can look at to help them understand what to expect?

Encourage your child to ask for help or ask their teacher for clarity if they are unsure of something or if they feel confused.

Help them to make 'mind maps' to collect ideas and summarise thoughts – use bright colours to help remember important links.

Help them to plan their study schedule early on so they have sufficient time to study. It can be helpful to develop a clear, realistic plan of what they want to cover in each study session.

Can they break it down into small chunks?

Remind your child to take a short rest and move around in between each part of their study.

Offer help sometimes.

It can be useful having someone to listen or practise with.

Healthy sleeping and eating habits

Encourage your child to stick to a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time.

They need to avoid late night TV shows or movies.

Motivate them to eat regularly and make time to have fun and exercise.

Help them to cut back on coffee or any other stimulants which they may be using, as these can increase agitation. Encourage them to drink lots of water instead.

Remind them to take time out when they eat, rather than carrying on with study.

Encourage them to eat fresh fruit, veggies, cereals, grains, nuts and protein - they are all good for the brain and blood sugar levels.

Encourage them to eat when they get hungry. This keeps blood sugar and hydration levels steady.

Avoid junk food if possible. It will bring a sudden sugar high which will fall away quickly, leaving a person feeling tired.

Relaxation ideas to help your child cope with exam stress

Always encourage your child to relax before they go to bed after concentrat-

ing for long periods of time.

Activities such as reading a short story may help them unwind and sleep better.

Encourage them to go out for a walk, run or do some other exercise they enjoy.

Teach them relaxation techniques such as listening to some gentle music, getting them to lie down, closing their eyes and taking a deep breath while visualising a calming scene such as a deserted beach.

Help your child to develop a positive mindset by encouraging them to visualise success – this can really help with self-confidence.

Avoid rushing on the day of the exam by organising and packing everything they need to take with them the night before.

Ideas for exam day

Talk about these ideas before exam day so as not to add to anxiety levels.

Suggest to your child that they: Eat a good and light breakfast – something that will sustain them and help them concentrate.

Try to arrive at school or the exam venue early.

Go to the toilet before the exam starts.

Keep away from people who may agitate them before the test or may say unhelpful, anxiety-provoking comments.

Try writing about their thoughts and feelings at least 10 minutes before the exam to free up brainpower from focusing on emotions, so they can focus on the test material instead.

Take time to slow their breathing and relax when they first sit down in the exam room.

Skim over the exam paper, underlining key words and instructions.

Work out how long they have for each question or section.

Watch out for the wording of the questions - they need to understand and address what the question is really asking.

Answer the questions they find easiest first to build their confidence, then as they relax more move on to more difficult ones.

Don't worry about how long others are taking, but keep an eye on the clock to ensure they have enough time to answer the more difficult questions.

Re-read answers if possible and make any changes that are necessary – correct spelling, check workings.

Post-exam tip

If your child is not able to do well in the exam and they feel very upset about it, reassure them that there is always a second chance and passing an exam is only part of the story. man and his sister were on Monday remanded to prison when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer a charge of trafficking in narcotics following the discovery of over 9.044 kilograms (18 pounds) of cocaine in frozen fish at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) last week.

Shafur Ali, 27, of Lot 27 La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara and Lazena Imrazie, 22, of Lot 8 Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara, are accused of having the cocaine in their possession on June 8, 2016 for the purpose of trafficking.

According to reports, ranks from the Police Narcotic Branch intercepted the cocaine in a cargo shipment of frozen fish at the CJIA. It was revealed that the two defendants had declared 33 boxes of fish to be exported. Routine checks were done on the cargo by the ranks and the cocaine was found concealed inside the seafood.

The siblings were represented by Attorneys Bernard DaSilva and Peter Hugh before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

According to the Attorneys, in their submissions to the Court, both defendants had no knowledge or possession of the prohibited drug.

processing of the fish.

Both Attorneys requested that their clients be released on reasonable bail, since Police have no evidence against them. Hugh pleaded with Magistrate McLennan to consider bail for the duo, citing the fact that the Police file was still incomplete and no indications were given to the Court as to when the file would be completed.

Hugh added that Imrazie was merely clearing a package on the day in question.

DaSilva also pleaded for bail to be granted to Imrazie, since she had not signed any declaration form associated with the shipment.

However, Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones strongly objected to bail for the duo. He pointed out that no special reasons were provided by the defence counsels for bail to be considered by the Court. Jones also said

that Imrazie provided different addresses to the Police.

He added that at the time of the woman’s arrest, she told Police she was residing at the same address as her brother. The Prosecutor stressed that there was a likelihood that Imrazie might not return to court for trial if released on bail.

However, Attorney DaSilva explained that the housewife would frequently visit her brother’s house, but her matrimonial home was located at Goed Fortuin, where she resides with her husband and five-month-old baby.

Prosecutor Jones indicated that investigations were still ongoing in relation to this matter. The Prosecutor’s submissions were upheld by the Chief Magistrate. The two were remanded. The case will continue on July 7.

everal homes in Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD), were without power on Monday after heavy winds almost uprooted five utility poles along the access road.

According to residents about 11:30h, a heavy and unexpected force of wind struck the area resulting in five poles almost toppling, one after the other. One of the collapsed poles ended up on the roof of a house in the area.

No one was injured, however.

When Guyana Times visited the area, Guyana Power and Light (GPL) workers were already there and had

One GPL representative who asked to remain anonymous told this publication that electricity was expected to be restored by Monday evening.

Ex-CANU officer jailed for cocaine in shoe soles

former Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) officer and another man were on Monday jailed for four years and ordered to pay a fine of over $1.5 million each by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

They were convicted of trafficking cocaine in shoe soles at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

Ex-CANU officer Kurt Sunich, 30, and Israel George, 22, were found guilty of conspiring with a person or persons known and unknown to traffic 580 grams of cocaine on July 3, 2015 at the CJIA. The cocaine was reportedly neatly packed in the soles of two shoes and placed in the lavatory of the departure lounge at the CJIA, for George to collect. However, the plan failed when CANU officers carried out a routine

search and found the drug.

Unknown to George, who was an outgoing passenger to the United States, the ranks reportedly substituted the drug. He then took possession of the shoes and was arrested.

Surveillance footage assisted investigators in identifying the persons who had allegedly taken the shoe soles to the toilet.

During the summing up of evidence, Chief Magistrate McLennan said Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers was able to prove all the elements of the offence.

She said that the Prosecutor was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt against Sunich and George.

Magistrate McLennan added that she believed the two men had knowledge of the trafficking agreement

and intended to play a part.

As such, she affirmed that based on evidence led during the trial she was satisfied that they conspired with persons to traffic narcotic.

In mitigation, Attorney Euclin Gomes said that Sunich has accepted the ruling of the Court and was very remorseful. He also asked the Court to impose the minimal sentence that the law permits.

Prosecutor Jeffers told the Court that the street value of the drugs multiplied by three is $1,566, 000 which the men were each ordered to pay as a fine.

Sunich and George made their first court appearance on July 7, 2015 and had denied the allegation. They were initially remanded to prison, but were subsequently released on bail by the High Court.

Khan is the ex-wife of Dataram; and Laundry is a single parent mother of two children.

Attorney Mark Waldron represented all four defendants. They were all remanded to prison until June 24, 2016 and the case transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.

Barama gang rape accused to stand trial today

hree Barama workers who were charged for the alleged December 5, 2007 rape and sodomy of a then 17-yearold female on the company’s East Bank Demerara property are set to stand trial today.

The three men charged are Paul Abrams, Claude Craig and Holston Melville, called “Pumpkin”.

The matter will be presided over by Justice JoAnn Barlow while the prosecution will be head-

ed by State Counsel Siand Dhurjon.

The rape trial was aborted last Wednesday, one day after its commencement, after Melville told the court that he was not aware that he was wanted by the Police for the offence.

Initially, Abrams and Craig were charged for raping the young woman and a wanted bulletin was then issued for Melville.

When the case was called last Wednesday, Melville turned up in court

and informed the judge that he was recently told he was wanted for the offence and, as such, had presented himself. Following this development, Justice Barlow aborted the trial.

According to reports, the teen was raped by her supervisor (Abrams) while she was working the night shift with him. Reports are Abrams asked for help and then led the teen into a room and had sex with her without her consent.

After the first accused

was finished, he allegedly locked the teen in the room and later returned with a friend who reportedly sodomised her after which the third accused allegedly went in and did the same.

The Police were summoned after the three men were apprehended.

Relatives of the young lady had previously told the court that even after a considerable time had passed, the victim was still suffering from excruciating physical and emotional pain.

n Thursday, there will be the annual pilgrimage to Enmore to pay tribute to the eponymous Martyrs who died that sugar may live. Or so we were told by the PNC that established the monument on which wreaths will be laid and speeches will be orated.

The five sugar workers were gunned down in 1948 by the colonial police to ensure the work practices would lower the cost of producing the sugar.

Rather than cutting the stalks of cane and dropping them to the ground (“cut and drop”) for another group of workers to pick up and load them into the punts, the management demanded the workers now cut the cane, drop them on the ground, then pick them up and fetch them to the punts (“cut and load”). If this sounds tedious, it was and also backbreaking. But hey! The war was over, and the British wanted sugar for their “cuppa”!!

Anyhow, the energy from the outrage at the killings catapulted some political “activists” to form the PPP and win the first general elections, from which there was no turning back. It was the spark that led to Independence 16 years later. The monument was built in 1976-1977 – a moment when there was a truce between the PPP and PNC occasioned by the former giving “critical support” to the latter – including on nationalism of sugar.

Solidarity against “imperialism” and all that!

In that flush of “solidarity” it would seem both sets of combatants for political power had temporarily forgotten the folks they were putatively honouring – the sugar workers. For you see, Dear Readers, two years before the Monument was built, the PNC had imposed a “levy” on sugar which sucked all profits from the industry which then ensured that at best the workers would “suck salt” for the rest of the century!

And suck salt they did...as every year billions and billions flowed from the sweat of sugar workers into the national treasury while they starved and the industry was run into the ground. And let us not forget when the PPP took over the reins of government in 1992, they kept the levy on sugar! So we now come to this year’s procession to Enmore.

What will the powers that be say now that one doesn’t even have to read the writing on the wall for sugar? The proclamation has already been made, the trumpet has sounded. The bell that tolled for Wales will soon toll for all the factories across the land. And the industry that gave birth to all of us will be no more.

To answer John Donne’s question, “The bell tolls for all of us”.

...for all workers?

But maybe the issue isn’t only the woes of sugar workers that trade unions were supposed to address.

Who remembers nowadays all the political parties came out of trade unions and their struggle for workers’ rights? Well, surely NOT the politicians. The TUC expressed consternation that no Government representatives were at the annual International Labour Organisation (ILO) meet in Geneva.

Has the TUC been asleep like a Guyanese Rip Van Winkle for the past five decades? Even though that TUC affiliate, GPSU, claimed Burnham was the best thing that ever happened to Labour...they’re obviously in denial. Have they forgotten who created all those paper unions to rig TUC elections? That was when the bell first tolled for trade unionism.

Today? Guess where all the Government officials were while the ILO meet was going on? Well, two Vice Presidents and a senior Minister were at the Harvard Club wooing big BUSINESS. President Granger was at the mid-Manhattan Sheraton wooing Guyanese businesses.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Labour...your bell has tolled!

PPP calls for heightened international efforts against terrorism

The PPP has called for heightened international efforts against terrorism in wake of the Orlando shooting

n wake of the Orlando massacre which left 49 dead and over 50 injured, one of Guyana’s major political parties, the People’s Progressive Party has called on the international community to increase its efforts in the fight against terrorism.

During a press conference on Monday morning, PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee said the shooting in Orlando, USA is suggestive of terrorism and in this regard, he called on the international community to increase its efforts to stamp out terrorism.

The PPP condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms.

“This is the worst killing in recent history in the USA and came on the heels of a series of terrorist-related activities which have left scores of people dead not to mention the untold number who suffered physical and emotional trauma as a result of such barbaric actions.

“Actions such as these can only be the work of sick and warped minds regardless of the motive or motives they may wish to attribute in justification of their murderous action,” Rohee stated.

Initial investigations into the incident by US officials revealed that the killer, Omar Mateen, did not appear to receive any external directions.

According to CNN, Mateen, however, pledged allegiance to the international terrorist group ISIS. It is believed that homophobia may have prompted the violent action.

In this regard, Rohee reflected on the progress made internally as it relates to Guyana’s legal framework in protecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

“I have not noticed anything that the PPP has done against to antagonise such a community,” he stated.

He said the ball was now in the Government’s court to take action.

Only recently, in observation of its 13th anniversary in Guyana, the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) lamented that the political will was lacking and little progress has been made in putting measures in place to curb incidents of violence and discrimination against LBGT members.

ess than 72-hours after the Police issued a wanted bulletin for Shemar Wilson, 20, also known as “Abdue” for questioning into the grenade attack on Kaieteur News’ publisher Glenn Lall, they on Monday issued another wanted bulletin, this time for a Turkeyen, Georgetown man.

The Police in a release stated that Janiel Howard, 30, also called ‘JP’ of Lot 322 Section C, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown is wanted for questioning in relation to ‘attempting to cause explosion’ which occurred on June 6, 2016, at Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.

However Guyana Times understands that Police have arrested another person in connection with the incident as they continue their probe.

The man arrested is allegedly the one who handed over the fragmentation grenade to other individuals with the aim of causing mayhem on Saffon Street.

The man, according to reports, also handed over a quantity of cash to the perpetrators to carry out the job.

On Friday last, the Police had at least 13 persons in custody but according to reports, most of them were released over the weekend. To date, only three are in custody assisting with investigations while the police are hunting the mastermind and the other.

The grenade was hurled at the luxury vehicle belonging to Glenn Lall last Saturday evening during the first night of wake for Assistant Editor Dale Andrews.

shattering glass. However, when a thorough check was made, the grenade was found lying next to the

It was after the review of the tapes of surveillance cameras, the grey car was sighted. Prompt investigation led to discovery of the car and the arrest of six persons who were later joined by another seven as investigations continued.

Man busted with marijuana at Matthews Ridge

resident of Matthews Ridge, North West District, is expected to make his first court appearance today to answer to a narcotic possession charge.

According to information, ranks of the Matthews Ridge Police acting information went into the community where they arrested a man with 453 grams of cannabis. The arrest was made on Sunday at about 15:00h.

Meanwhile, during an operation also on Sunday at Arukamai Backdam, Mabaruma, North West District the Police Narcotics Branch destroyed a quarter acre with about 300 marijuana plants ranging from 1 foot to 6 feet in height.

The police also destroyed a camp suspected to be used by the planters. No one was arrested as Police continue their investigations.

World Blood Donor Day

Health Ministry urges Guyanese to be voluntary givers

A

s Guyana joins the rest of the world in observance of World Blood Donor Day today under the theme “Blood Connects Us All”, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) is challenging the public to work with the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) in achieving its vision of having 100 per cent voluntary blood donations by 2020.

While the day is set aside for raising awareness on the crucial importance of blood donation, as well as recognising voluntary donors for their continued support, the Ministry along with NBTS is firm in their vision of ensuring blood is more freely donated.

With the figures for voluntary donation in Guyana rising from 25 per cent in 1990 to 90 per cent currently, this brings the country closer to its goal of having full support from the public in enhancing the health

sector.

The ministry through the NBTS has recorded a total of 9698 units of blood donated annually as well as a number of blood drives conducted on a regular basis. The aim is, however, to have 10,000-12,000 units

donated yearly since this is the average amount required for over 15,000 surgeries.

The accomplishment of this was credited to the competence of NBTS which has been the initiator of a number of projects over the past decade for promoting voluntary blood donation across Guyana.

The NBTS attested to this improvement as acting director of the organisation, Pedro Lewis, reported that there is a significant improvement in the number of voluntary donors who visit regularly to make donations to the bank.

In addition, he stated that a number of organisations have been working in close association with NBTS in organizing blood drives across the regions.

However, there remains a dire need for the continuation of this response as the blood bank is always in need in the case of emergencies.

Lewis explained that NBTS had taken up the mandate of supplying blood wherever it is needed, whether private or public health institutions and it has maintained its function over the years.

For this reason, citizens were encouraged to become more aware of the importance of making regular donations to the bank, given their personal conditions are intact with the standard health regulation.

Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) through its shadow minister of health, Dr Frank Anthony, has indicated that Guyana has much to celebrate because of its accomplishments over the past years to meet the criteria set out by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for voluntary blood donation.

The PPP/C had taken much of the credit for this achievement since it believes that the implementation of strategic measures with the NBTS were efficient in its cause.

It was highlighted that in order for Guyana to thrust forward in the area of health, there needs to be much more done by the current ministry to ensure the process of blood transfusion becomes safer for the patients who are to receive the blood.

Noting the current plight of the health sector where there is a lag in the delivery of medical supply, the PPP/C urged the ministry to take immediate steps to rectify this situation.

“This shortage has prevented the timely screening of blood, which has already affected the availability of safe blood. We urge the government to take immediate steps to correct these deficiencies. Let us continue to provide safe blood to our people; there should be no compromise.”

With the Zika Virus quickly brewing in Guyana, it was pointed out that this should be more reason for the ministry to address the shortages. It was suggested that samples also be screened in order to detect the virus before the blood is transfused.

On that note, the party commended NBTS as well as the voluntary donors for their contributions, and urged more partnerships between health organisations, as well as the ministry and NBTS so that a reliable supply of blood is always in store to meet the needs of the population.

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated worldwide to mark the significance of voluntary blood donors as well as to raise awareness. It was first observed in 2004 and has since been recognised annually.

hen the PPP, and in particular, Cheddi Jagan came to power through an uncontroversial election in 1992, most Guyanese wondered what would become of the PNC gang that raped Guyana for over three decades. The word in the street was that Jagan would go after Burnham’s assets he stole from the state and deposited in foreign banks.

The street lingo was that Burnham was the “fourth richest African in the world.” The question as to whether such a label is true or not, is meaningless. What is meaningful is the people’s perception of this man what makes the above label immensely believable.

Jagan did not engage in any substantive forensic auditing.

Instead, he removed many inept PNC administrators from foreign and domestic posts.

Jagan did not conduct forensic auditing for two reasons.

The first is that the new PPP government was afraid to do so because of the fear of being removed from power. The military and police were still loyal to the PNC. In 1994, the Dr Lomarsh Roopnarine political conversation was that “the PPP won the 1992 election but the PNC was ruling”.

The second reason is that Jagan believed a forensic auditing of the PNC would create more mayhem in Guyana.

Moreover, Jagan thought that to conduct any sort of forensic auditing would have been a moot effort since most Guyanese understood how bad and corrupt Guyana was under the PNC. Jagan wanted the PNC to help in the rebuilding of Guyana instead of isolating them.

The current members of PPP can shed some information as to why a forensic auditing was not conducted, at least when compared to what is going on right now. What is certain is that a forensic auditing of the PNC grip on power after three decades in 1992 would have sent a clear message to politicians as to what can happen when the principles of leadership are violated.

This was a missed opportunity.

What happened instead was that the current opposition thought that they would never be in the opposition, much less subject to any form of auditing. This is bad leadership anywhere and anytime and those who are found guilty through the courts, not by propaganda reporting, should face the consequences, including serving time in prison.

I have always supported forensic auditing – Guyana’s style of checks and balances of government - to ensure transparency and good governance. However, this is not what is happening with the current forensic auditing. The current regime has floundered immensely in this regard. I will provide three reasons why.

Firstly, those who are leading the forensic auditing are staunch critics of the PPP and some have even voted for the coalition. The question then is, how objective can these individuals be in carrying out mandated responsibilities?

One of them has been writing regularly in one of the dailies, expressing dislike and disgust of the former government. This person has recently launched a self-published book and guess who was there supporting this book? Yes, the President of Guyana. Am I to believe what is written in that book is carved in stone, not to be questioned or criticised? Someone should review this book.

Another so-called leader of the forensic auditing has his own television programme which, until recently, was at odds with the previous government. Again, these individuals may be honest but I question their judgment. I would go even further and ask for a forensic auditing of these individuals.

Secondly, these forensic audit officers are deeply involved in Guyanese politics to be objective. Many believe that they were dogged, rightly or wrongly so, by the previous administration.

It is not what they have discovered but it is what they have chosen to discover coupled by the fact the forensic auditing is restricted to the past decade. Why not extend it backwards to 1970. By the way, I now have a copy of the Rodney report. I can see why the current regime is reluctant to release the report to the public.

Thirdly, the dailies are publishing the findings of forensic auditing as if they are facts. The people who are implicated in the forensic auditing should have an opportunity to respond. Instead, the government’s media mouthpiece and the national daily tabloid (KN) are purporting reckless and rancorous views, acting like the Supreme Court of Guyana. Let me repeat, any politicians or persons who abuse state funds, who engage in corruption, and who violate the law should face the consequences. But there must be a fair journey of jurisprudence.

Finally, the President should use the findings of the forensic auditing to go beyond “corrective measures” but the findings must be assessed by an independent international firm before any action can be taken (lomarsh.roopnarine@jsums.edu).

PPP awaits NCN invoice

The PPP is waiting on NCN to send an invoice for millions owed on election ads

he People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has not made any moves nor does it intends to do so to pay off the debt it owes to the Sate-owned National Communications Network (NCN) Inc for advertisements broadcast during the General and Regional Elections in 2011 and 2015.

According to PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee, the Party will not be moving to pay for the advertisements until NCN sends an invoice or document requesting that it pays off its balance.

“We are not doing anything about it at this point in time… (we are) waiting for them to send (an invoice) to us, if they want to send anything at all,” he stated during his weekly press conference at Freedom House on Monday.

The forensic audit conducted into the State-run NCN revealed that the com-

pany failed to bill two major political parties – the PPP/ Civic and the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) for over $21 million in political advertisements aired during the 2011 and 2015 General Election campaigns.

According to the audit report published by the Finance Ministry on Friday, the parties owe NCN a total of $21,978,450.

It was outlined that in 2011, the PPP/C was not invoiced for $18,204,750 and APNU for $45,500 in advertisements aired by NCN. A breakdown of ads aired for PPP/C – the then Government – reveals $4,704,000 in airtime was incurred at 100.1 Radio Roraima Fresh FM; $5,667,500 for 98.1 Hot FM; 3,878,250 for Channel 11 and $3,955,000 for the Voice of Guyana 102.5.

Also included in the PPP/ C’s debt is $12,988,500, which was recorded as Public

Service Announcements (PSAs). The auditor pointed out that NCN could not have presented a documented policy on PSAs, but it was noted that political advertisements were not approved as PSAs. Furthermore, as it relates to 2015, PPP/C and APNU/AFC were not invoiced for advertisements aired by NCN to the tune of $3,708,200 and $20,000, respectively.

In relation to the PPP/C ads during the 2015 election campaign, $39,200 in airtime was incurred for 100.1 Radio Roraima Fresh FM; $1,453,750 for 98.1 Hot FM; $492,000 for Channel 11 and $1,723,250 for Voice of Guyana 102.5.

Meanwhile, Rohee maintained that the findings of the audit reports have nothing substantial and were all a part of a smear campaign to tarnish the reputation of the PPP/C.

Berbice man found hanging in veranda

he lifeless body of a man was found hanging from a rope around the neck in the veranda of his East Canje, Berbice home.

The body of Khemraj Atomdeo, 53, of Lot 45 West Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, was found by his brother Kamaldeo Atomdeo. After the discovery the Police were summoned.

The autopsy report on Atomdeo showed that he asphyxiated. It also revealed that alcohol was in his bloodstream.

That was the last time he saw his brother alive.

The father of one spent 18 years overseas and returned to Guyana recently. He was described as a heavy drinker.

Man found with stab wound to head – 15-year-old in custody

man is in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was allegedly stabbed by a teenager at Capoey, Essequibo Coast.

Reports are Tedd De Young called Kadir, 48, was stabbed at about 23:00h on Sunday by a 15-yearold and was rushed to the Suddie Hospital but was

transferred to the GPH. According to reports, the victim’s son, Earlan De Young, said he heard someone screaming and upon investigating found his father lying motionless on his tommy with a wound to the left side of his head.

The labourer was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to Suddie

While details of the stabbing are sketchy, this newspaper was told that villagers had seen the suspect and the injured man in a vehicle together earlier in the day.

The suspect has been taken into Police custody and is assisting with investigations.

here seems to have been some misunderstanding between the Education Ministry and the proprietor of Alim Shah Stores, as enquiries made to the Ministry confirmed that the business’s name was still on the list of suppliers for the Government school uniform voucher programme.

On Sunday, the business, owned by 90-year-old Alim Shah, stated that the Education Ministry had dropped it from the programme for the first time since it began under the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Government.

However, speaking to Guyana Times on Monday, Ryhaan Shah, the daughter of Alim Shah, said upon enquiries to the Chief Accountant of the Ministry, she was told that the business’s name was still on the list.

According to her, the official said the advertisement in the newspaper was not sanctioned by that office. She could not say who placed the ad.

Efforts by Guyana Times to contact the Education Minister and the Chief Accountant were all futile.

Meanwhile, Shah said on Sunday, that from the list issued by the Education Ministry in its full page ad-

vertisement it appears that her father’s business was the only one that was singled out for omission this year. She said it was felt that it was a direct result of her, as a columnist of Guyana Times, being critical of the Granger Administration.

According to Ryhaan Shah, “as an Indian rights activist”, she was also very critical of the PPP/C Government, but her father’s business was never singled out for victimisation under that Government. She believes Guyana is moving once again into dangerous territory where “criticism of the Government is being stifled and any critics will be aware that they will pay a heavy price”.

Since the Alim Shah Stores provide competitively priced school uniforms, the management feels that while Government’s decision to drop the stores might af-

fect business, the shops will continue to do back-to-school business. “It will also affect the local manufacturers who employ people to sew the uniforms for us, but we’ll all manage,” Alim Shah said.

Alim Shah has been in business since 1947 and noted that the business survived the worst of the Burnham era: “Being dropped is a setback, but we’ll continue to do business. Our good prices and product will continue to attract customers. I’m very disappointed with the Granger Government’s decision, but I’ve lived through it all and this will not break us.”

Ryhaan Shah says she is very troubled that Government has taken this decision to “victimise her father and her father’s business. He’s 90 years old and has never hurt anyone. This is plain cowardice. Why not come after me?” she said.

Most of those accusations were admitted by Khan.

Assistant Overseer Akeisha Walters, who has been with the NDC since March this year, alleged that Khan’s attacks started last month and intensified as she brought it to the attention of councillors.

She said the chairman told her he needed to know all of her whereabouts, including when she goes to the toilet, eats and have sex.

Both Walters and Market Clerk Raveena Anadeo met with Regional Representative of the Prime Minister, Gobin Harabjan and Technical Assistant attached to the Office of the President, William Moore to lodge complaints and then met with the media.

“He told me that I have to seek his permission to speak with the media so that why I can’t talk with the media, I am sorry,” Anadeo said.

Meanwhile, Walters is accusing the NDC chairman of sexual harassment.

She said he told her that she must tell him of her every move including sexual activity.

In an invited comment, Khan said he was using an analogy when he made the statement but denied that he used the word “sex”.

“The way I have been administering and the way I know it, it is quite within my rights and within the legal framework to refer and for emphasis purposes can

make analogies. In an effort to let this office understand that her every movement, every action, every decision as regards the council, I want to know,” Khan stated The NDC chairman previously held the post as Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO) for Region Six but was sacked when the Coalition Government took office last year.

According to the NDC chairman, a misconception would have triggered the allegations. He explained that Walters might not have been properly informed as to from whom her directives come and added that the particular officer seldom adheres to directives given by him.

“There is a reluctance to take the necessary guidance and directives. I had to be very blunt; eat, p*ss and s**t I have to know because this affects the council but I did not use the word sex,” he explained.

Walters is also accusing the chairman of victimisation, alleging that in one day she received three warning letters from Khan.

“He give me a warning letter for a chairman stamp, I get a warning letter for not preparing financial statement where I did and he give me a warning letter for the minutes, he say I did not prepare the minutes,” she noted.

In response, the chairman said the letters were because of reluctance to adhere to lawful instructions, chief among which was forgery.

“Yes, this individual was in fact written to. As a veteran administrator, I am in the habit of writing people but that government officers have to confirm and subscribe to the rules and regulations of not only the Public Service but there are

rules which are captured in the by-laws of the NDC that also need adherence and conformity. So having recognised that there were breaches in these regards, as the Chairman of the NDC I have not much of an alternative but to take the appropriate and requisite action,” Khan explained.

According to him, as stipulated under the Public Service Act, he addressed the issues verbally with Walters before the letters were issued.

Khan added that if the employee continues to violate or flout the rules, then the act stipulates that a second letter is issued and if need be a third letter will be issued which is a dismissal letter.

“The dismissal is recommended. We don’t arbitrarily dismiss, we recommend first and I am just following the principals here.”

According to the Chairman, both the Assistant Overseer Akeisha Walters and the Market Clerk Raveena Anadeo had been in the habit of leaving the office without giving notice or indicating where they were going and closing the office at odd times.

However, in commenting on the statement made by Anadeo, that she was forbidden to speak to the media, Khan said it was only a part of the statement which he made to her. “I said; ‘don’t speak to the media unless you would have gotten the permission to do so. You are an employee’. You cannot be the employee of an organisation and you are speaking on organisational issues that you cannot explain or give a proper account for.”

The matter as it relates to sexual harassment has since been reported to the police.

PM on 10-year-old Graham’s Hall student inconclusive

post mortem (PM) conducted Monday on the body of a 10-year-old boy who collapsed last Wednesday and died at schoolis inconclusive, according to the medical examiner who conducted the autopsy.

The father revealed that on Wednesday, his son had just returned from a morning recess and collapsed shortly after consuming a snack he purchased at the school.

The child was picked up by teachers and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Residents and teaches described the lad as a loving and polite child.

The father pointed out that his only son was not suffering from any serious ailments.

irst Lady Sandra Granger has launched the Self-Reliance and Success in Business Workshop in the town of Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) via which more than 25 women will over the next week benefit from training that is expected to help improve their business management skills.

During brief remarks on Monday to the group of women in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) office, the First Lady said that it was important for women to be able to enhance their business skills, adding that women have many skills that they may not recognise and could be marketable. “[This workshop] will show you how to be good businesswomen… It will show you how to plan, keep records, look at the market, look at the competition and see how you can get beyond that and create your own niche for yourself, not only how to establish a business but how to grow and expand it,” Mrs Granger said.

Similar workshops have been held in other parts of the country and the First Lady explained that men have approached her want-

ing to be part of the initiative. However, she said that targeting women has a specific and beneficial purpose.

“When a woman’s economical standing improves, her family’s standing improves,” she said to loud applause from the participants.

M e a n w h i l e , Representative of Interweave Solutions, Yohann Pooran, who is the facilitator of the weeklong training programme, highlighted the key objectives of the workshop. “Success in business is exactly that.

We teach you skills that if applied correctly, they can help you improve your circumstances financially by helping you build successful businesses,” he said.

Pooran added that the workshop would explore issues of finance, resource management and packaging, the fundamentals of marketing and why poor attitudes can hurt otherwise potentially successful businesses.

“One must put on a positive construct if you want to achieve success. You can’t have a pessimistic outlook.

You have to look at solutions, and a large part of successful businesses is that women entrepreneurs can

see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

Bartica Mayor Gifford Marshall welcomed the initiative, stating that a focus on bettering the business skills of women could have a positive effect on other issues affecting the Region.

“The title of this workshop is very important and it sends a strong message. All of us should be empowered to ensure that the resources that are put into this initiative are put to good use,” the Mayor said.

He added that the business sector within Bartica was not perfect, but if residents put their best foot forward to enhance their skills, key problems could be solved.

“We can make a difference with our positive attitudes by applying ourselves using the principles learned at this workshop to improve our town and our Region,” the Mayor said.

J$2M reward for info on murder of Canadian in Jamaica

olice are offering a J$2 million (US$15,966) reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the two men who fatally shot a Canadian visitor.

Andre Palakai, from Ontario, Canada, was gunned down last Friday night on the West End main road in the resort town of Negril as he, his girlfriend and his father were walking back to their hotel from a restaurant.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear. Police sources

have told local media that robbery was not the motive. According to some reports, two men rode up to the group around 21:00h. and shot Palakai, a 35-yearold real estate agent, before speeding off. Other reports indicate that Palakai was shot as he confronted the men as they tried to take his girlfriend’s handbag.

Neither the woman nor Palakai’s father was hurt in the incident.

“It is very early in the investigations and we are going to be offering J$2 million to anyone who has infor-

mation that will lead to the capture of these killers,” the Jamaica Observer quoted Commissioner of Police Carl Williams as saying.

The top cop added that he had given Palakai’s father the assurance that Police would do everything in their power to find the persons responsible for his son’s death.

Bahamas military apprehends almost 200 illegal Haitians

he Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) has apprehended 199 Haitians off the west coast of the Bahamian island of Andros.

The RBDF was on a routine patrol near north Andros last Friday when it was diverted to investigate the sighting, which was initially reported by Police in Red Bays, North Andros.

The military officers found the Haitians aboard a wooden sailing sloop.

“The migrants were in urgent need of food and water, which were provided by locals from the Red Bays community,” said a statement from the RBDF, which also indicated the immigrants were transported by a Defence Force vessel to New Providence and handed over to immigration officials on Sunday.

he formal regional conversation around marijuana in the Caribbean Community (Caricom) will move forward when the first national consultation on the issue is held on Wednesday in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Regional Commission on Marijuana, in collaboration with the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines, has convened a series of consultations with a cross section of stakeholders including youth, faithbased organisations, Non-Governmental

Organisations and special interests groups.

In July 2014, the Caricom Conference of Heads of Government mandated the Secretary General of Caricom to establish the Marijuana Commission which would, inter alia, “examine the social, economic, health and legal issues surrounding the various aspects of marijuana use in the Caribbean and its implications, and make recommendations to the Conference”.

In fulfilling its mandate, the Commission will host three focus group discussions and a town hall meeting as part of the national consultation in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

They will engage with youth drawn from secondary and high schools, community colleges, tertiary learning institutions, out-ofschool youth, youth leaders and institutions working with youth.

Discussions will also be held with special interests groups such as researchers, medical practitioners, including of alternative medicine; advocates for medicinal and others uses of marijuana, and representatives from the National Drug Council, as well as faith-based organisations and NonGovernmental Organisations.

Qatar to deport Dutch woman convicted of illicit sex

Dutch woman who alleged she was raped after being drugged in an upmarket nightclub in Doha was convicted of having sex out of wedlock by a Qatari court on Monday and given a one-year suspended sentence.

The woman, 22, was ordered to be deported to the Netherlands once the ruling was formalised, which is expected over the coming days, the Ambassador to the Netherlands Yvette Burghgraef- van Eechoud told Al Jazeera at the courthouse.

The accused man in the

case, identified as Omar Abdullah al-Hasan, was also convicted of having sex outside of marriage – a serious offence in this conservative Gulf state.

A court official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said that the man was from Syria.

Hasan will receive 100 lashes for illicit sex acts and another 40 lashes as punishment for public drunkenness, and will be deported.

Hasan and the Dutch citizen, identified as "Laura", were not present as the judge read out the verdicts.

"Had she been a Muslim woman, she would have received at least five years in jail. No one can get out of such charges here in Qatar," he said.

Tech giant Microsoft agrees to buy LinkedIn for US$26.2B

icrosoft says it has signed a deal to buy the professional social networking site LinkedIn for $26.2 billion.

LinkedIn's shares surged 48 per cent to US$194.28 on Monday, in a deal that the Chairman of LinkedIn's Board, Reid Hoffman, defined as a "refounding moment".

According to a statement from the two companies, LinkedIn "will retain

its distinct brand, culture and independence".

LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner will remain CEO of the social networking site, but will report directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

"Just as we have changed the way the world connects to opportunity, this relationship with Microsoft, and the combination of their cloud and LinkedIn's network, now

gives us a chance to also change the way the world works," Weiner said in a statement.

Microsoft said it would pay US$196 per share for the company and would issue new debt to fund the deal.

The deal, Microsoft's biggest ever, is expected to be completed later this year. The move comes as the Seattle-based company refocuses its efforts from being a pure software firm, and LinkedIn seeks ways to boost growth.

Ethiopia and Eritrea trade blame over border clashes E thiopia and Eritrea have traded blame over fresh clashes in a disputed border region that triggered a bloody war in 1998-2000 and killed thousands of civilians.

Ethiopia said the situation was calm around the border town of Zalambessa on Monday, and Government spokesman Getachew Reda alleged that Eritrean soldiers had been "promptly repulsed" by Ethiopian troops.

A resident in the Ethiopian town of Zalambessa, across the border from Tsorona, told Reuters news agency by telephone that he had heard the

sound of shelling on Sunday and into Monday morning.

Eritrea disputed this account, saying Ethiopia started the fight.

"The TPLF regime has today, Sunday 12 June 2016, unleashed an attack against Eritrea on the Tsorona Central Front," Eritrea's Information Ministry said in a statement.

"The purpose and ramifications of this attack are not clear," it added.

TPLF refers to Ethiopia's Tigrayan People's Liberation Front, one of the four parties making up the ruling coalition.

Bangladesh arrests thousands after series or murders

olice in Bangladesh have arrested 3245 people in the past 24 hours, as security forces continue their crackdown on those suspected of involvement in the slayings of secular activists and religious minorities.

The total number of suspects arrested since the campaign began on Friday stands at 8192, Police spokesman Kamrul Ahsan said on Monday.

At least 103 of those arrested were tied to the spate of killings targeting religious minorities and secular activists, with about 6000 on other charges related to firearms, drugs, and other offences, police said.

Over the past week, an elderly Hindu priest, a Hindu monastery worker, and a Christian shopkeeper were hacked to death in attacks for which the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group claimed responsibility.

The Muslim wife of a "counter-terrorism" police official was also stabbed and shot dead in a separate attack.

The attackers have killed more than 30 people in Bangladesh since early last year, with atheist bloggers, liberal academics, gay rights campaigners, foreign aid workers, members of minority Muslim sects and other religious groups among the victims.

he Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has issued a call for the re-establishment of the Labour Ministry. This call is being made in light of claims that persons are being turned away from the Social Protection Ministry when they attempt to make complaints against their employers who fail to meet their legal obligations.

This, the GTUC stated, is unacceptable as the ministry has a responsibility to investigate and resolve these issues.

In a statement issued on Monday, the umbrella union said it continues to receive complaints from workers that they are being turned away from the Social Protection Ministry when they seek to lodge complaints against employers.

The process in industrial relations on matters of such nature is not to turn away complainants but to activate a process to investigate and resolve the complaint.

According to Sommersell, a tremendous amount of work has been put into bringing the Academy, which was conceived in 2012, to where it is today. Classes are offered in violin, piano, drums, percussion, bass, trumpet and French horns, among others, and run from 15:00h (3pm) in the afternoon Monday through Saturday.

“It’s been amazing. The best part of this whole thing is the community,” she said. “Guyanese people are great. They are kind and giving, so as soon as they see someone who is new, they immediately want to make you feel at home.”

She said that musical education is very different in Guyana when compared to the United States.

“Because music there (the US) is part of the curriculum. And that is good, but it also kind of hurts, because kids are being forced to be part of the programme. So instead of being, or always being excited or willing to participate, kids are just sitting there like….”

She said here, however, because, music was something that was not taken for granted, there was a “lot of concentration”.

“They are really being

focused,” she noted, continuing that there is a level of discipline here that she has not seen in the US. “I think that music is so important. I think that music brings people together.

I believe that if you work hard and believe in yourself, you can become a better singer or a better musician and I think people need to understand that and that is why I am doing music. I love to share music with people.”

Sommersell said she has been involved in music for a very long time, singing from the tender age of four.

Her inclination and skills have now provided her with the opportunity of becoming the Associate Director of the Academy, when it resumes classes for the next school year.

“I accepted the position as the Associate Director of the new school year,” the Adelphi University graduate told Guyana Times.

“I wasn’t here from the very beginning. I was looking up teaching abroad opportunities in 2012 and found a blog of Eric Sayer, who was in Guyana offering programmes. He said he wanted to build a school in New Amsterdam, which is deprived of such opportunities.

He accepted her help and a few years later things got underway. With a lot of donations from charitable organisations, both the young and old began pouring in, and, according to Sommersell, the experience has been worthwhile.

A house has also been built opposite the school for the overseas teachers who come to volunteer.

While the Academy has a host of youths attending, many adult students have also been taking hold of the opportunity, which Sommersell said provides enjoyment for them as they get to do something outside their normal routine.

She said there were persons who for their entire life never had the opportunity to play a musical instrument and the Academy offered that golden opportunity.

Students at the Academy have not only been practising, but have been rolling out several concerts and public performances.

esidents of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, are voicing their frustrations over the lack of potable water in the area.

According to residents, two weeks have passed since they started experiencing the shortage, and have been told that they may face another three weeks without water.

Aggravated residents told this publication that they were initially told the shortage was due to damaged equipment at the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) pump station.

Currently, residents are receiving water from bowsers dispatched by GWI from they fill their containers. This, the residents say, is very inconvenient as the trucks pass by during the day when many of them are away at work, business or sc hool.

One resident Asha explained that she was told residents would have to wait another two weeks for the return of water, and this has become very frustrating: “They told us that something is broken and they have to get it fixed, and that the parts have to be imported. We rely on our pump to pump out any water that is remaining in the pipelines, other than that we have to hope for the rain,” she stated.

Other residents also explained that a local supplier of distilled water in the area has been exploiting the situation by charging residents large sums to refill their containers.

The residents also revealed that the supplier has been taking the guise of an agent of GWI, and as such allegations of the Water authority charging residents for water delivery have arisen.

According to vendors who ply their trade near the drain, the sewage system would overflow into the gutters emitting an unpleasant stench, which served as a major hindrance towards their businesses since shoppers find the scent repulsive and opt to stay away from the area.

Other vendors told Guyana Times that when there was heavy rain, the drain would overflow unto the walkway and even human faeces would be seen in front of the business stalls.

inister of State Joseph Harmon charged 57 graduates of the Youth Leadership Training Programme at the Madewini Training Centre to be ‘doers’ and not just talkers for the development of Guyana.

The Minister was at the time speaking at the closing ceremony of the first in a series of eight training programmes on Sunday, which will draw on youth leaders from across the country between June and December.

“The true demonstration of your effectiveness as youth leaders will be the practical things you get done and the positive tangible things that you achieve through your endeavours. Be doers, not talkers. We have too many talkers in Guyana; people who have the best ideas about everything but they do nothing. Change that paradigm.

Become agents of change, become people who do things.

Make your communities better, make your regions better and ultimately you will make Guyana better,” Minister Harmon advised.

Referring to the contents of a publication by President David Granger, where he re-

ferred to the crises of employment, education and empowerment faced by young people, who make up 60 per cent of the nation’s population, the state minister said government has a clear vision for the development of this important sector of the population.

Following national consultations across the ten regions of Guyana, a draft National Youth Policy, headed by the Presidential Advisor on Youth Empowerment Aubrey Norton has been reviewed

by Cabinet and is now being prepared as a ‘white paper’ to be laid in the National Assembly and made public for scrutiny and consultation.

However, Harmon noted that even as the National Youth Policy is in the pipeline the challenges facing Guyana’s youth are of a critical nature and hence it is important that interventions like this training programme begin immediately.

The minister also spoke on the importance of social cohesion and lauded the organisers of the programme for the diversity reflected by the faces of the graduates.

He called on them to return to their communities and re-

solve to work to remove the political, economic, social and cultural barriers that divide Guyanese.

“I hope the training, which you have received here, will enable you to establish cohesive relationships and cohesive groups to foster cohesive communities and thus a truly cohesive society in our country…

Your government is unequivocal and resolutely committed to the establishment of a cohesive society. We cannot, we will not develop by half or any other fraction or configuration… a holistic arrangement where all of our country’s people are committed and involved is indispensable to any real development that we achieve as a nation.”

Further Harmon called on the young people to not see politics as a ‘big people’ thing but to become involved in the “political, economic and social affairs of your communities as precursors to your involvement in regional and national affairs.”

He added that even as they work to develop existing and new youth organisations at the community level, they must also focus on their personal development.

by Guyana Times is seeking to compel the Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department to quash its decision made on May 23, 2016, to “refuse entry” to the applicant’s ‘1 x 20’ container PONU0397470, currently detained by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) at Muneshwers Limited, Water Street, on the grounds that the said decision is unreasonable, influenced by irrelevant considerations, in breach of the applicant’s legitimate expectation, capricious, arbitrary, ultra vires the Food and Drugs Act, Cap 34:03, and the regulations made there under, is unlawful, null, void and of no effect.

According to Ahmad, over the past five years he has been importing from several countries, including Malaysia, Canada and Indonesia a wide variety of products, such as canned foodstuffs, soap powder, food boxes, and seasonings and selling them on the local market.

He said he has been importing different types of milk over the past five years from Malaysia and Singapore without any problems at the point of entry into Guyana, that is, from the GRA or the Government Analyst- Food and Drug Department or

any other agency. “One of the products which I import consistently over the years is milk in various forms, including powdered milk and sweetened condensed milk of various descriptions and types.”

According to the businessman on October 26 last year, he ordered from one of his regular suppliers Mewah Dairies, a 20-foot container of sweetened condensed milk containing 1325 cartons.

“The container arrived at Port Georgetown on the 30th day of December, 2015.

As is the norm, the shipment was accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis, a Free-Sale Certificate from the Ministry of Health of Malaysia, a Certificate of Freedom of State from Disease and a Veterinary Health Certificate, Department of Veterinary Services, Malaysia.”

He said normally, when the products arrive in Guyana and before they are cleared by Custom Officers of the GRA, these documents are produced and copies are retained by the Custom Officers and the goods are permitted entry into Guyana after the payment of the assessed Customs duties and taxes.

He said, however, that on this occasion, the procedure was followed except that no duties and taxes were paid and a sample of the milk from the container was provided to the Government AnalystFood and Drug Department upon arrival in the jurisdiction.

“Upon its arrival, my servants and/or agents were informed by the acting Director of the Government AnalystFood and Drug Department, that the labels on the milk appeared to her to be fake;

she failed to specify the basis for this conclusion upon further queries. On another occasion, my servants and/ or agents were further informed that the milk constituents fell short of that which is required by the Food and Drug Regulations for evaporated milk.”

He said his agents attempted to explain the difference between sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk; however, the Director of the Government-Analyst Food and Drug Department appeared to be “incapable of understanding the difference”.

According to the businessman, he took the Tax Assessment Notice to the office of the Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department, Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST) Building, University of Guyana, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, and was informed that the constituents of the milk are not in keeping with the Food and Drug Regulations for the fat content and milk content required of sweetened condensed milk.

“This is the third occasion on which a different reason for the refusal has been supplied to me. As a result, the Director of Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department, Marlon Cole, stamped “Entry Refused” on my Customs Declaration Form and, to date, I am unable to clear or obtain delivery of the said container.”

According to the businessman, he informed his Attorney and does not believe that Section 13 of the Regulations apply to the milk which he imported, that is, sweetened condensed milk.

he relocation of vendors at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, continues to attract tension as some of those who were instructed to remove from the public road to facilitate expansion works, continue to ply their trade there.

The vendors were given up to Monday (June 13) to remove their stalls but according to vendors who have constructed new stalls in the environs of the Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School, disunity among colleagues has led to slow sales.

Guyana Times was told Monday that sales would improve if all of the sellers moved to the new location. As this is not happening, some threatened that if the others remain on the roadway, they too will return to the roads Tuesday despite being given instructions to the contrary.

Vendor Dolly who moved into her relocated stall told this newspaper that the slow sales are affecting her finances. She noted that this will hinder her ability to repay her house mortgage, which has six

Vendors are calling for a sign to be erected in front of the street identifying the new location, and for something to be done about the vendors who are not cooperating.

An official from the Communities Ministry visited the area to assess the plight of the vendors.

On Friday last some 65 vendors of Vreed-en-Hoop agreed to be relocated to facilitate works under the West Coast Demerara Road Project.

However, there is a dispute over the land which the vendors were to oc-

cupy. Godfrey Bess supposedly has paperwork to prove that the land, said to be government reserve, belongs to him.

Despite this claim, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure gave the vendors permission to construct new stalls in the environs of the Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School.

Originally the vendors were to be moved to a tarmac in Pouderoyen that was ineptly constructed for a market, but they rejected this proposal.

When Guyana Times spoke with vendors on Saturday, the majority said they do not have an issue with the relocation but noted that Bess threatened to dismantle their stalls.

When Guyana Times revisited the location Monday, no stalls were dismantled.

It was at a meeting with Junior Minister of Public Infrastructure Annette Ferguson that some 65 vendors agreed to relocate. While it was stated that the move was only temporary, the vendors in reality will not be allowed to return to their former location.

amaican sprint king Usain Bolt claims he would have no issue handing back an Olympic gold medals if it is found that teammate Nesta Carter, a member of the 4x100m relay team, used a performance enhancing substance.

According to recent reports Carter, a member of the Jamaica relay team for several Olympic and World Championship triumphs, has returned an adverse analytical finding for methylhexanamine in a retest of samples from the Beijing Olympic Games.

Punishments handed out for use of the substance so far have ranged from six months to one year and nullifying of results for the period.

The loss of a medal at this stage would make it unlikely for Bolt, who currently has 6 Olympic gold medals, to equal American sprinter Carl Lewis who has nine medals. The duo are widely regarded as the greatest track and field sprinters of

ercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix after a tense strategic battle with Sebastian Vettel’s revived Ferrari.

Vettel looked in control of the race after vaulting into the lead from third on the grid with a blistering start.

But Ferrari surrendered the lead by pitting during a caution period, and Hamilton - doing one pit stop to Vettel’s two - controlled the race.

Brazil was controversially eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America Centenario after an apparent handball from Raul Ruidiaz lifted Peru to a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

India take series after Zimbabwe implode W

Mabaruma Police Renaissance Youth Group on Sunday June 12, 2016.

The donation will assist the youths in developing their skills and building inter-personal relationships as well as providing a constructive outlet for the vibrant youths in and around the Mabaruma area.

It is in continuing with the Guyana Police Force’s Social Crime Prevention initiative which has aided in drastically reducing crime countrywide, whilst at the same time equipping youths with the necessary skills to ensure a positive future.

The first day of the sixday encampment was used to have a thorough assessment of the players, according to Moore.

“Today (yesterday) we were unable to utilize Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground due to rain, however, we made use of the LBI indoor facility to thoroughly assess the players technical facets and to come up with interventions moving forward,” said Moore.

The players were not selected from an inter-county competition as is the norm for selecting most national training squad, however, when questioned about the

selection of the squad, Moore was unaware of the criteria used.

According to Colin Stuart GCB’s Territorial Development Officer the structure of women cricket locally is in the process of development and it is not model as the male component, so the team was mainly selected from programmes that preceded the training camp.

The training squad consists of 19 players, six of which have played in previous tournaments.

At the end of the camp on Saturday the squad will be cut to 14 members and will leave Guyana on Tuesday.

Bunbury launches sporting goods collection and distribution drive

a l l - O f - F a m er and Guyana’s International Football Ambassador, Alex Bunbury, today unveiled yet another philanthropic initiative to support the development of sports at the youth and grassroots levels in Guyana.

The Alex Bunbury Sports & Academic Academy (ABSAA) Sporting Goods Collection and Distribution Drive will ensure young Guyanese athletes, especially those in underserved communities, are equipped with the right training gear

and equipment to optimize preparation and performance in the primary competitive sports of Guyana: cricket, football, basketball, rugby, track and field, cycling, boxing and tennis.

Bunbury intends to influence his international fame and contacts to generate ongoing donations of new and gently-used sporting goods via targeted collection and distribution centres strategically located in select international cities such as Brooklyn, Atlanta, Washington DC,

t. Lucia Zouks fast bowler Morne Morkel is relishing the prospect of being a part of the fourth edition of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and is excited about lining up with and against some of the biggest stars in world cricket.

Experienced pace-man Morkel, who has claimed 45 wickets in 39 T20 internationals to date for South Africa, believes that this could be the Zouks’ year to progress as Darren Sammy’s men bid to win the coveted title for the first time. The 31-year-old is one of the most respected fast bowlers on the international scene and to date has played 71 Test matches and 106 OneDay Internationals for the Proteas.

oach/ player Shelly Daly advanced to the semifinals of the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Jubilee Tournament after defeating junior player Aretta Dey on Sunday.

Played at the GBTI Recreational Facility at BelAir Park, Daly made light work of Dey as she achieved victory in two sets 6-3 -6-2.

Playing against each other for the first time in the Ladies Open Singles, Dey started nicely as she landed an early surprise by breaking her rival’s first service game. Daly then levelled at 1-1, before Dey moved two points ahead at 3-1 with 100% success rate on second serves.

for a second time before taking the first set handsomely.

Similarly to the first set, Dey managed to break first to take the lead, however, she only managed one more point as her senior took that set 6-2.

With the win Daly advances to the semi-finals to play Afruica Gentle.

Kalyca Fraser topped Shivani Persaud to win the Girls Open Singles finals in two set. Fraser managed the first set after 6/4 battle with Persaud, before claiming the second 6/2 after a much easier battle.

Meanwhile reigning Men’s 35 champion, Godfrey Lowden is set to face Leyland Leycock in the finals of the Men’s 35 category. In the first semifinal Lowden got past Harry Panday 6-2 7-5 in the Semi-Finals. Lowden showed why he is the defending champion as he overpowered Panday to win the first set 6/2.

From the strong platform of 139 for 1 after 27 overs the visitors’ innings lost momentum, and the target of 266 was vulnerable to an early assault on the short boundaries of Warner Park. Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher duly hurled themselves at a bowling attack, which was missing Mitchell Starc, and were helped by a pair of dropped catches from Usman Khawaja.

Those misses helped take the West Indies to an opening stand of 74 inside 10 overs, and that early acceleration allowed Samuels to sculpt an innings in his familiar style - long periods of inactivity mixed with brief bursts of power and inspiration. Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin offered support, and a wobble arrived too late to save Australia from defeat.

Khawaja had taken advantage of a promotion to the top of the order to help guide Australia’s innings, but he fell short of what may have been possible again. Bogged down in the 90s, he was ultimately run out when chasing a third run for his partner George Bailey.

Steve Smith, the captain, forged 74 without always looking in complete control of his game or the conditions, before Bailey played sensibly to push the visitors beyond 260. Jason Holder bowled an exemplary spell for the West Indies, having started on the best possible note by surprising Aaron Finch with bounce and having him taken at slip for a duck in the first over of the match.

Sunil Narine was also economical, while Carlos Brathwaite and Kieron Pollard claimed two wickets each.

Fletcher and Charles clearly had boundaries on their

minds when they walked out to start the pursuit, helped by the fact there was no Starc to contend with, for reasons of rest. Nine times the rope was reached or cleared in the first seven overs, and from there the required rate was never likely to drift beyond six runs per over.

After Khawaja’s misses, James Faulkner contributed an excellent cutter to deceive Fletcher, and Adam Zampa struck in his first over with a skidding delivery that pinned Charles in front of middle

Mitchell is Achievers Youth and Sports Club senior cricketer of the year

ll-rounder Rennison Mitchell was voted the senior cricketer of the year when the Achievers Youth and Sports Club held its 2015 annual awards ceremony recently at the Fort Wellington Secondary School.

Mitchell was also given awards for being the most improved senior all-rounder and most co-operative member of the club while Rendell Bobb was the most improved bowler.

Leonard Williams took the cricketer of the year, best batsman and bowler prizes in the U-15 division while Therese Carmichael grabbed the most improve player accolade.

he formidable Tucville team were held to 4-4 draw against Albouystown when action continued on Sunday in the Ministry of Health/ Petra Organisation Soft Shoe Tournament which is being played under the theme, “Against Gender Based Violence.”

Playing at the Santos Training ground on Brickdam, the encounter between the two teams was certainly the most exciting match of the night was it saw eight goals being scored on a night where 26 goals were scored.

The Tuvcille team which boast several players from the city side Fruta Conquerors took the early lead in just 34 seconds into the game via Dennis Edwards but Albouystown hit back in the 8th minute when Roy Samuels found the back of the neck.

Kelsey Benjamin reasserted the lead in the 10th for Tucville followed by another brace in the 21st but shoot-out between the two sides continued as Kemo Scott hammered a double in the 23rd and 26th.
