olitical Activist, Dr David Hinds has stated that Government needs to get serious and address the ethnic insecurities faced by East Indian communities.

Responding to former President Bharrat Jagdeo’s statement to Guyanese in the Diaspora recently, Hinds questioned his motive for the declaration. Asking if Jagdeo was doing it to call attention to the Government or if he was doing it to score points to get them angry, Dr Hinds said “You have to make the distinction,” emphasising that while he does not believe that Jagdeo was being “inherently racist”, he believes it was said to score

political points.

“I do not share the view that the statements he made were inherently racist… there are two approaches… one, Indians are being marginalised and you are drawing attention to it and representing them… I see nothing wrong with that… but I think Mr Jagdeo was exploiting a perceived or a real situation for political objective,” he said.

Dr Hinds noted that Jagdeo, being a former President and a possible future President, should be above the “fray” because whatever he says is believable and “his voice has a lot of power”.

However, he explained

that whenever a government gains power and places “its own people in power”, the other side feels insecure.

“It is called ethnic insecurity. There is ethnic insecurity in the East Indian community and in the African community… and now it is more heightened in the East Indians community because the political control is in the hands of the others,” he said.

Hinds indicated that the test of this Government’s attitude to East Indians would be in what it does, adding that those in power need to go into the Indian communities and face them and answer their questions.

He stated that the

Government’s image is not only being dragged through the mud by its non-supporters, but its own supporters were also lambasting it for neglect. Hinds pointed out that Afro-Guyanese are saying the Government is doing nothing for them – that they are not following through on their promises.

“The Government is between this rock and a hard place… its supporters are saying it hasn’t done anything for us and the Indians are saying you are discriminating against us and so the Government has to take this matter seriously,” he posited, stating that the Ethnic Relations Commission and the Social Cohesion Former President Bharrat Jagdeo

Ministry need to step in and conduct massive education drives in both Indian and African communities about cohesion and relieving their ethnic insecurities.

On the other hand, he stated that he was sure that there are East Indians who have been discriminated against. “… I’m sure in some little village some official is going to say now is we time…

I would be lying to you if I were to say it doesn’t happen.”

Public outrage erupted after Jagdeo at a gathering in New York posited that the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) Administration is guilty of political and racial discrimination and that there is an assault on Indo-Guyanese people.

The Ministry of the Presidency released a state-

ment condemning the comments, accusing Jagdeo of sowing seeds of division, discord and race hate. The statement also noted that the discrimination claims made by the former Head of State are figments of the PPP/C’s imagination.

But several PPP/C Executive Members stood by Jagdeo’s statements, insisting that what he declared is nothing short of the truth.

In fact, former Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall highlighted that the widespread dismissal of hundreds of Indo-Guyanese in the Public Sector without a hearing and compensation; the repossession and attempts thereof of Core Homes and house lots from predominantly IndoGuyanese; continuous attempts to expropriate private properties owned by Transport and Certificate of Title, mostly by IndoGuyanese; the targeting of mainly Indo-Guyanese by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) and the State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU), as well as the confiscation of large sums of money and jewellery; the wanton dismissal of senior management staff at the Guyana Sugar Corporation; the closure of the Wales Sugar Estate affecting hundreds of Indo-Guyanese; the refusal to offer assistance to the rice industry, which is dominated by IndoGuyanese; and the removal of street lamps from IndoGuyanese villages while installing street lights in AfroGuyanese communities, are only a few instances of the discrimination being executed by Government.

Suspects confess to killing trio after caught stealing fuel A

fishing expedition turned into a disaster when a family was cold-bloodedly murdered after witnessing several persons stealing fuel from a nearby farm.

Four of the seven suspects who were in Police custody – a farmer, Carlton “Lyman” Chetram; his wife, their son, 19-year-old Jairam Chetram; and an employee, Tameshwar Tajmohan – have confessed to the killing in the Corentyne triple murder case.

Crime Chief Wendall Blanhum confirmed to Guyana Times that the suspects on Thursday succumbed under intense questioning by investigators and confessed to the murder which occurred exactly one week ago at Cookrite Savannah, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne).

The suspects reportedly told investigators that another employee was involved in the crime and Police have since launched a manhunt for him. Based on information received, the farmer Chetram who owns a rice land, would often trespass onto the nearby farm of Sudama “King” Jagmohan to steal diesel from fuel tanks stored in the compound.

Jagmohan said one of the men in custody; Tameshwar Tajmohan worked with him and was one of the trusted employees. He said he had been losing fuel for the past three years but had no idea that his neighbours were involved.

to gain access to the fuel but the loud noise alerted the trio who eventually confronted them.

Fearful that their identities would be exposed and that they would be handed over to the Police, the group murdered the three men.

The farmer is said to be a licensed firearm holder and the suspected murder weapon, his shotgun, was on Tuesday sent for ballistic testing following autopsies on the victims’ bodies on Monday.

Meanwhile, charges are expected to be laid soon against the four suspects while the other three persons who were in Police custody have been released.

The bodies of 33-year-old Naresh Rooplall; 37-yearold Pawan Chandradeo, also known as “Suresh”; and his 15-year-old son, Jaikarran, also known as “Kevin” were discovered on the morning of July 22, each bearing one gunshot wound.

Autopsies performed on the bodies of Jaikarran and Rooplall, gave their cause of death as shock and haemorrhaging caused by a gunshot wound.

Their bodies were laid to rest on Wednesday.

The discovery of the bodies was made shortly after daybreak by another rice farmer. The bodies were lying on a dam about three miles into the savannah, a short distance away from a camp called “King’s Camp”.

The men had gone on a fishing expedition which began at 15:00h on Thursday.

They were expected back at about 03:00h on Friday morning. Also on the trip was another of Chandradeo’s sons.

The young lad told investigators that while on the journey with his family, he was instructed to wait at “King’s Camp” with a guard who was stationed there. Those instructions were given to him at about 19:00h on Thursday.

According to the teen, at about 20:00h on Thursday evening, he heard what appeared to be two gunshots, and later the rapid sound of what appeared to be four more gunshots.

At daybreak, the lad said he left “King’s Camp” in search of his father, brother,

and uncle. “I call for dem but I ent get no reply.”

On his way, he met a man who told him that he did not see his relatives and advised him to return to his home, which he did.

According to Chandradeo’s wife, Chandrawattie Rooplall, also called “Pam”, she received information that her husband had been injured in the backdam from a security guard attached to the Mibicuri Hospital, even before her son returned home.

She explained that as she launched an investigation to verify the reliability of the report, she was told that the persons injured were not her husband, son, and brother.

It was another brother of Chandradeo who went to the scene with the Police and confirmed Rooplall’s worst fears shortly before midday, when the bodies arrived at the Mibicuri Hospital.

Friendship Day

T

he United Nations has dedicated July 30 each year as International Day of Friendship. This day is dedicated to building bridges of friendship among people, countries, and cultures.

Closer to home in South America, in Paraguay, the day is celebrated each year as it was there that the first World Friendship Day was proposed in 1958. The concept is said to have been first proposed by Dr Artemio Brachio as he was having dinner with friends on the River Paraguay.

Out of this humble meeting of friends, the World Friendship Crusade was born. The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, colour or religion.

As such on April 27, 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30 as official International Friendship Day. However, some countries, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August.

The idea spread, largely through the Internet, and has now become very popular among many countries in the world today.

Friendship is a unique relationship; it is like a strong form of interpersonal bonding and communication among the friends. A World Happiness Database study found that people with close friendships are happier. So friendship is a sign of happiness.

Fortunately in Guyana, as a nation we have shared each other’s culture despite the various ethnic backgrounds. In fact to a greater extent, it is this very cultural diversity, which can divide people, is what has in fact been Guyana’s greatest strength.

Culturally, Guyanese coexist harmoniously. With the advent of social networking sites there is no doubt that friendships exist in the virtual world, and not surprisingly the day is also being celebrated online.

Social media is an important venue for interaction and conversation among the youth of today. According to a Facebook research, 71 per cent of young adults use that social media site. Instagram and Snapchat also have become increasingly important, with 52 per cent of youth using Instagram and 41 per cent using Snapchat.

The trend today is that social media, in this fast technologically advanced world, is a critical platform for making and staying in touch with friends. As such the frequency with which many use social media, it is not surprising that social media users report that social media makes them feel better connected to their friends’ feelings and to information about what is going on in their friends’ lives.

According to a recent research more than 83 per cent social media users say social media makes them more connected to information about what is happening in their friends’ lives and 70 per cent say these social platforms better connect them to their friends’ feelings.

As the world celebrates Friendship Day, we here in Guyana should use the day as an occasion to celebrate the presence of friends in our lives. Time and again, the world has witnessed so much violence, that it seems somehow we have forgotten the real meaning of friendship.

Let’s celebrate this relationship in such a way that it fades away all the hard feelings from our hearts and let the humanity prevail and together we build a beautiful and peaceful world.

To mark the International Day of Friendship, the UN encourages governments, organisations, and community groups to hold events, activities and initiatives that promote solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation.

“On this International Day of Friendship, let us strengthen bonds among individuals and generate greater respect and understanding in our world” - UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon urges.

There is no room for public objectivity

Dear Editor, My loyalty is to my country, not to a political party, or some partisan, ideological philosophy, and worse yet, not to some egotistical individual. So when I write or speak, I do so with the interest of Guyana at heart.

However, not without fail, every time one of my articles is published, some political soup-drinker, or some brainwashed ideological stooge, on either side of the political divide, finds it appropriate to shift from the issues I address, to attacking me personally. Now I do not mind the attacks, except that those who level such attacks do so from the comfort of an alias or some pseudonym, or some otherwise fake name.

One of the many problems that Guyana has is our lack of objectivity. If I am a PPP then I must condone all the unpatriotic and racist drivel coming out of Freedom House. And if I am PNC (the Coalition is in tatters), I must agree with all the lies and mismanagement emanating from the Office of the Presidency.

Guyanese have always been afraid to speak their minds.

From Walter Rodney, to Ronald Wadell, to CrumEwing, to Freddie Kissoon,

the supporters of the powers-that-be have always been able to drive morbid fear into logical, political, descanters. They have also been able to force many of their political opponents out of this country or into virtual obscurity.

Guyanese live in fear of their leaders, that’s why they are afraid to speak out.

And that’s why we are a failed country 50 years after independence.

I am amazed at the amount of people who tell me that I must stop writing ‘certain’ kinds of letters because “they will come after you”.

Folks who love me are afraid that “they” will bug my phone or otherwise harm me. It is not that many people do not agree with what I write. It is just that over the last 40 years, Guyanese have had tangible proof of horrifying situations, which have driven them into silence. Our lack of objectivity, the perpetual fear-mongering and the fright of brutal, physical harm, have served to keep the PNC in power for 28 years and the PPP in power for another 23 years.

God forbid if we continue to allow those old tactics to bug us down for another 50 years! Someone once noted; “Everybody wants to go

to heaven but nobody wants to die”. If those who rule by fear know that they could oppress a nation by the use of fear, they will be tempted to arouse fear in the citizenry. However, those of us who understand our calling in this life need to step up to the plate and take the proverbial bullet. They can kill many of us but they can’t kill all of us.

I have taken a position, with the support of my family, that I will not align myself to any political party that does not allow me to be true to my conscience.

Neither will I be silenced because of fear.

In Guyana, one can only work for a political party if one agrees to all the party’s doings. There is no room for public objectivity. If you object, you must do so in secret, or risk your job.

That’s why I like the North American kind of politics where a Democrat could vote for a Republican bill, or support a Republican agenda, and vice versa. I like the kind of politics that allows a supporter of a party to publically disagree with any policy of that party.

This notion that anything that Burnham, or Jagdeo or Granger do is right and must be condoned, does not sit well with

me. And it will not work for the development of this Country.

I passed by the passport office the other day.

It was 06:45h and the line stretched from in front the office all the way around and deep into Barrack Street. Those people, hundreds of them, plus the thousands more before and after them, are planning on fleeing Guyana. They are heading to developed countries where people are allowed to speak truth to power and hold their elected officials accountable.

Editor, with or without oil, Guyana will never move from this backward, banana republic that it is, unless the elected leaders are constantly reminded that they are accountable to the people who elect them. Those leaders must therefore publically call off their hound dogs, who use the cover of night to hurt and kill, or those who use their cyber pseudonyms and engage in character assassinations against those of us who chose to do the dirty, patriotic, job that needs to be done.

The first surgery was done by a medical outreach at Lethem Hospital on 9 April, 2016, and the second at the Georgetown Public Hospital on 20 April 2016.

Hospital on tubes and the doctors there want to have her quickly discharged despite the non-approval by the family and relatives of the patient.

TAAMOG is therefore calling for an urgent intervention by the Minister of Public Health, Guyana Medical Council, and the Chief Medical Officer.

Cancer poses one of the greatest public health threats of the 21st century Dear Editor, First I wish to applaud Annand Boodram for his excellent and timely article on alcohol and some of its major effects on this society, and the issue of alcohol in our culture.

Nowrang Persaud, thankfully, has acknowledged the impact of alcohol on domestic violence, road traffic accidents and suicide - but that is only the tip of the iceberg.

Along with my colleagues in the medical profession we are left to deal with the devastating effects of alcohol on a daily basis.

Alcohol is among the five most addictive substances of abuse which are; heroin, crack cocaine, tobacco, diazepam and alcohol. It also shrinks the brain of chronic alcoholics and some experts feel it may be one reason why some don’t understand the implications of drinking on an industrial scale.

Alcohol is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality - it is responsible for seven types of cancers and more than 600,000 deaths globally every year which include head & neck, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectal and breast - the problems of alcohol are immense. It includes heart disease, heart failure, rhythm disturbance, stroke, pancreatitis, acute and chronic liver disease, liver failure and liver cancer which has a dismal prognosis. No diabetic should drink alcohol, it is neurotoxin and damages the nerves.

The full scope of the effects of alcohol cannot be addressed in this letter.

Towards this end the Guyana Cancer Prevention Society (GCPS) is pleased to announce that one of its main objectives is to increase Public Awareness that Cancer poses one of the greatest public health threats of the 21 century. More than 80-90 per cent of all cancers are PREVENTABLE, yet more than 80 per cent of all cancers present, advance to stages 3-4 cancer, with af-

flicted persons living six months to a year if they have the best standard of care.

In 2014, some 14 million people globally were diagnosed with cancer and there were 8.2 million deaths - by 2030, 22 million people will be diagnosed with cancer and more than 14 million deaths will be registered.

The tragedy is some 65 per cent of all cancers will occur in low and mid-income countries like Guyana. This alarming rate of increase in new cancer cases and in the number of deaths, tell a clear story - we are failing to control cancer, and carrying on business as usual is unthinkable The cost to the global economy by 2020 will exceed US$1.2 trillion. Quite clearly we cannot spend our way out of this crisis.

The GCPS’ mission is to educate the public and change the arc of literacy on cancer.

We recognise that the following are the main causes of Cancer - and our mission is to prevent the preventable cancers and provide screening for early detection to cure cancer.

Tobacco is the number one preventable cause of cancer and responsible for more than 70 per cent of all cancer deaths. Every year tens of millions people start smoking.

The GCPS will work with the Ministry of Health and support the introduction of the strongest legislation to curb tobacco use, and prevent more tobacco-related cancer deaths.

Alcohol is the second most preventable cause of cancer and like tobacco is addictive. I am not certain how many people adhere to the mantra “drink responsibly - two drinks only,” too many people make poor choices and lack discipline -” two drinks only - that is just to get us started” is what we hear too often.

OBESITY and a LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY is another preventable cause of cancer - too many calories,

sugar, salt and fat, fuel the Obesity epidemic.

Sexually transmitted viral infections causes five major cancers, all of these Cancers are preventable, remember, safe sex - the most frequent sexually transmitted viral infection is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which causes several cancers, the most wellknown is cervical cancer which Is preventable with the HPV vaccine and screening for early detection and appropriate treatment as required. HIV-Aids 4 cancers, Hepatitis, B&C, HPV, and HTLV1.

Again we will work with the Ministry of Health and all organisations to ensure that no woman need die from this preventable and curable cancer.

We as a nation can and must do better - together we can all make a difference.

Buxtonian emancipation celebrants applauded Dear Editor, I applaud the organisers of Buxton First of August Movement (BFAM) for planning and hosting emancipation celebrations that commemorate the liberation of African slaves. This is a vibrant, dynamic community, the like of which are almost non-existent in the country.

The members are committed and dedicated to a worthy cause. Other communities should emulate this group to commemorate African emancipation, abolition of indentureship, and our first (Amerindian) peoples.

As the Buxton organisers note, the varied planned “activities serve as a mobilisation tool for the reawakening of the emancipation spirit of African people”. One can’t help but admire the work of these outstanding African community activists.

Although from different parties, and some were victims of Burnham’s terrible governance, they come together to celebrate their identity.

Their former enmity and differences do not prevent them from collaborating and working together to engage in activities beneficial to their people. These are a very proud people whose nationalism, concern for their community, and activities should be saluted and emulated by the rest of Guyana. The or-

ganisation’s celebration warrants our support. People of other ethnic groups should join our African brethren in this celebration of their freedom from slavery – it was a long, hard battle to end this dehumanising form of labour.

Like the Africans, Indians are also marking their liberation from another dehumanising form of labour – indentured servitude – with similar activities to the Buxtonians being planned next March to commemorate the centennial of emancipation of Indians from indentured bondage. Similar to how our African brethren in Buxton are observing emancipation anniversary, Indians also plan to host activities throughout Guyana to examine the way forward for the Indian community.

The Indian organisers also plan a series of lectures on indenturedship, film festival, panel discussion of the state of the Indian community, ethnic relations, symposiums, seminars, a convention, a play, cultural presenta-

tions, and an academic conference open to the public.

As the People’s Progressive Party Government did during its tenure to sponsor emancipation celebrations throughout the country, the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change coalition should continue this tradition and fund the African celebrations. Similar sponsorship should be given to organisers of next March observance of the centennial of the British Government’s legislation abolishing Indian indentureship as well as to other ethnic groups celebration their liberation and or culture. We should learn to celebrate each other’s culture.

Swimming pools and health risks: A parent's evidence-based guide

re swimming pools a health hazard?

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise. But like many activities, swimming in a pool has its downside.

Despite attempts to disinfect the pool, some pathogens may still lurk in the water.

And research suggests that disinfectants may pose their own health hazards.

Swimming in chlorinated pools, particularly indoor pools, might put children at higher risk for developing respiratory illnesses, including asthma and hay fever.

In addition, there is evidence that disinfectant by-products – formed when chlorinated water is mixed with microorganisms, human body fluids, cosmetics, and sunscreen – can damage your DNA and increase your risk of cancer.

This sounds rather alarming. Does it mean we should keep children out of the pool?

Not necessarily. It depends on the pool.

Why swimming pools need to be disinfected

Swimmer's ear – also called otitis externa – is different from a regular ear infection. Usually, when people say a child has an ear infection, they mean otitis media, an infection of the middle ear. This sometimes happens when a child gets a cold.

But swimmer's ear happens when bacteria grow in the ear canal, which is a passageway to the eardrum. In that canal, you'll find delicate skin that's protected by a thin coating of earwax. Most of the time, water can run in and out of the ear canal without causing a problem. For instance, you don't usually get swimmer's ear from taking baths or showers.

Bacteria get a chance to grow when water stays in the ear canal. A lot of swimming can lead to these wet conditions in the ear canal. Bacteria grow and the ear canal gets red and swollen. Sometimes children can get an infection in the ear canal even if they haven't been swimming. A scratch or other irritation to the ear canal can also lead to swimmer's ear.

How do I know if I have swimmer's ear?

Swimmer's ear may start with some itching, but try not to scratch because this can worsen the infection. Ear pain is the most common sign of swimmer's ear. Even touching or bumping the outside of the ear can hurt. The infection also could make it harder to hear with the infected ear because

If a doctor thinks you have swimmer's ear, he or she will help you get rid of the infection. To do that, the doctor will probably prescribe ear drops that contain an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. Sometimes, the doctor may use a wick.

Not the wick on a candle! This kind of wick is like a tiny sponge the doctor puts in your ear. The medicine goes into the sponge and it keeps the medicine in contact with the ear canal that's infected. The wick is removed after it has done its job.

Use the drops as long as your doctor tells you to, even if your ear starts feeling better. Stopping too soon can cause the infection to come back. If your ear hurts, the doctor may suggest that a parent give you a children's pain medication.

This can help you feel better while you're waiting for the antibiotic to work.

When can I go back in the pool?

The question every child wants to know is: "When can I swim again?" You'll have to ask your doctor, but be prepared to wait a little bit. It could be as long as a week to 10 days before the doctor says OK. That's a bummer in the summer, but it's better than having that awful ear pain again!

If you have a big problem with swimmer's ear or you're a child who's always in the water, the doctor may suggest ways for you to protect yourself. CXC launches Green Engineering syllabus

n response to socio-economic trends in the Region, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) on Thursday introduced its Green Engineering syllabus in Guyana.

Subject panel member, Dr Paulette Bynoe, at the launch of the new syllabus at the Theatre Guild, Parade Street, Kingston, stated that since the late 1980s there has been global concern about the state of the environment and so there is an obvious necessity for educational institutions to take strap of what is taught in schools and education facilities and “reorient existing subjects and introduce new ones to address issues of sustainability”.

Thus, she explained that CXC established a committee, of a panel of six persons to brainstorm the existence of such a syllabus and afterward meetings were held to draft it. She posited that the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Green Engineering subject is divided into two Units – Introduction to Green Engineering and Application of Green Engineering and Principles. These units are further segregated into modules.

The modules in Unit One are Concepts and Issues; Theoretical Framework of Green Engineering and Green Engineering in Practice, while Unit Two’s modules are the Utilisation of Sustainable Materials and Energy, Sustainable Designs and Green Engineering Solutions.

Dr Bynoe stated that the topics covered in Unit One are concepts of sustainable development, sustainability and efficiency, current trends related to the utilisation of natural resources,

Whereas, topics covered in Unit Two are sustainable utilisation of materials and energy, the environmental consequences of utilising different energy sources, policies and decision-making in manufacturing and using of natural resources, principles related to design, products and infrastructure, and occupational safety and health issues related to the manufacturing of products and construction of engineering infrastructure.

She pointed out that the syllabus has been designed in such a way to guarantee

that the focal point is not only students’ ability to recall, but also on knowledge and comprehension, application of knowledge and practical ability.

“This will allow students to really exercise their problem solving and critical thinking skills – very important for engineering – so it is not a case where a student will cram and pass the exam.

We don’t need that sort of thing. The knowledge is important but we have to begin to transcend the knowledge if we are going to make a decision in the world today,” she declared, noting that the syllabus provides for lectures, research, laboratory experiments, debates, use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and case studies.

However, Minister Roopnaraine stated that this new initiative by CXC is a clear indication that Caricom is doing something. “… very so often Caricom is castigated for its slothfulness and failure… without any accolades for its successes, like the success of the developing of a green engineering syllabus,” he argued.

The Examination body, which was established in 1972, has introduced eight other “new generation” syllabuses: tourism, financial services, digital media, physical education and sport, entrepreneurship, performing arts, agricultural science and animation and game design.

Animation and game design is expected to be launched in Guyana in September, with lecturers being out sourced.

he 16-year-old boy who allegedly hacked his stepfather to death last Thursday made his first court appearance on the capital offence of murder.

On Wednesday, the Leonora Magistrates Court heard that Eustace “Patrick” Williams, 70, of Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara, was dealt some 14 chops about the body.

The merdered man’s teenage stepson was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that at 10:30h on July 21, he murdered his stepfather, Williams.

Presiding Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool transferred the matter to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate‘s Court for September 5 and the teenager will remain in custody until then.

Williams’ body was discovered in a pool of blood in his kitchen. Reports had indicated that the teenager after committing the act fled the house drenched in blood. The lad was lat-

er found hiding in a clump of bushes by two men from the area and handed over to the Police where it was discovered that he also sustained a chop wound to the foot.

The suspect was reported as a drug addict who shared a strained relationship with his stepfather who often objected to his drug use.

Guyana Times was also told that the teenager would often sell items from the house to purchase the illegal drugs.

Residents had pointed out that the teenager was put out of the house since

last year by his stepfather as a result of the constant arguments that regularly ensued between them.

Meanwhile, it was earlier this month reported that Suresh Ganesh called Tarzan, 28, who also resided at Crane, hacked his wife and two-year-old son to death. He was later charged with their murders in addition to allegedly chopping the hand of his own mother on the day of the attack after the woman took bread and tea to him.

Ganesh was remanded to prison and will make his next court appearance on August 9, 2016.

It was reported that Luckham, 55, was discovered by a neighbour shortly after a male was seen exiting his home with several bags. The man was found motionless next to a wardrobe with a length of rope tied around his neck, while several bottles of tablets and photographs of his family lay nearby.

ow your Eyewitness is in a quandary. How the heck are we ever going to get out this messy trading of invectives on “race baiting” if the leader of half of the country can’t even speak of what he considers to be factually based racial discrimination? Is it that when it comes to matters caused by, or contingent on, race, we have to invoke Ludwig Wittgenstein’s aphorism, “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent”?

What’s going on? Are we living in such an upsidedown, la-la land that we’ll pretend “race” isn’t the elephant in any room (or park) where Guyana’s politics is being discussed? It’s not as if our politicians are all vulgar Marxists who insist that “race is an epiphenomenon” and as such, is not worth discussing.

Nowadays, you can’t turn on your TV or read any of the dailies and not have “race” jumping out at you.

Now your Eyewitness isn’t completely oblivious to the reality that “race” hasn’t been exploited in some counties – such as the US, right at this moment – to stir up violence by one race against another. In places like Rwanda – the same dynamics operated with folks of different ethnicities and resulted in hundreds of thousands of people being slaughtered.

But surely Jagdeo saying that his constituents – Indian Guyanese – are being discriminated against by the new Government can’t amount to “race baiting” when he, along with several other prominent leaders in his party, have been saying the same thing at various times in Guyana when specific incidents occurred.

In January of this year, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo addressed an Alliance For Change audience in Neresa Place in Queens, NY and complained about “the Opposition resorting to protest, picket and petition” on “racial discrimination”. So right off the bat, we knew that Nagamootoo, whose office issued the recent denunciation of Jagdeo’s statement in New York, knows that Jagdeo and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) have been invoking claims of racial discrimination against Indian Guyanese.

But he then went on to lambast the PPP to the New York crowd, “So this claim of racial discrimination in Guyana or political discrimination in Guyana is not founded in fact, it is founded and rooted in racism!”

Was he engaged in “race baiting” when he accused the PPP of engaging in “racism”?? Should he have been censured?

But even if he honestly thought back in January the PPP was “race baiting” – he would know it didn’t lead to any racial incidents back in Guyana. So why does he repeat the charge once again? And we KNOW it’s him!

This Eyewitness really thinks he “protesteth too much”! And maybe he IS indulging in “race baiting”!

Talk about putting the cart before the horse. Or this being Guyana, the cart before the donkey. A year after the State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU)was launched with great fanfare and its head Clive Thomas making all sorts of threats against members of the previous Administration, the legislation that actually proposes to form such a body has NOW been drafted. They say!! In which other country would you find such ass backwardness, so to speak?

It’ll be called an “Agency” and not a “Unit” so SARU will become SARA. Wow!! But apart from the change in nomenclature, we can understand why the “legal” authority was so long in the making. Firstly, Thomas will now become a bounty hunter: “25 per cent of the value of recovered property will be credited, with the remaining 75 per cent credited to the Consolidated Fund.”

With Thomas being able to use his 25 per cent bounty as he sees fit, his motto might very well be: “Go ahead: make my day!”

he woman who was accused of inciting racial hostility on Facebook against President David Granger is now free after the case was dismissed on the grounds of nullity on Thursday.

The case was thrown out by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after the woman’s lawyer convinced the court that the charge was null and void, given that the country’s laws do not cater for offences of that nature.

The Chief Magistrate, upon examination of the defence, conceded that charges cannot be instituted in this regard since there is actually no law governing the conduct of such a case.

Racial Hostility Act after posts of her using derogatory statements and issuing death threats against President David Granger went viral.

It is also alleged that she used offensive remarks about the President in messages sent via WhatsApp to her son, Asif Salim.

This controversial episode sparked a nationwide debate, with some contending that the arrest was an infringement upon freedom of speech.

The mother of three had post, “Granger want a bullet in head… I am out of a job now because of them.”

The Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had accused the Government of targeting PPP/C supporters saying that when it was in power, serious threats were made against leaders and officials of the PPP/C

Administration, but they did not pursue them in such a manner.

Shortly after this incident, a Berbice man named Rameshwar Beekham was charged for threatening to kill former Presidents Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar as well as other top PPP/C leaders.

Unlike Salim, he made a direct threat to the lives of the former Presidents and politicians.

Subsequent to his arrest, he was taken to Dr Bhiro Harry at the psychiatric ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital for a mental evaluation and it was found that he was of sound mind.

According to Beekham, it started out when he made a comment about independence and praising the Government. He said because of speaking the truth on Facebook, he was attacked by “PPP supporters” who made ridiculous and threatening comments.

“I was not strong enough to take those comments, which I regret. I am sorry,” he told the court.

Beekham had posted, “I will one day with my gang, I am equipping and training, will walk in Freedom House and murder Bharrat Jagdeo and the PPP/C top brass”.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted and fined $75,000.

Kingston, Georgetown, woman was on Thursday sentenced to 10 months imprisonment for driving dangerously and colliding into two little St Lucian Scouts, leaving one of them in a critical condition.

Tracy Fordyce of Cowan Street was slapped with the charges of Dangerous Driving and Breach of a One-Way. She pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to her by Magistrate Renita Singh in Court Seven at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to reports, sometime around 12:10h on Tuesday, Nick Omarie Joseph, 8, and Darnell Matthews, 9, were walking along Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, under the guidance of a St Lucian adult, when they were struck by a car bearing registration PSS 1236.

In court on Thursday, Magistrate Singh sentenced Fordyce on the Dangerous Driving charge and imposed a fine of $15,000 for the Breach of a One-Way charge.

However, after receiving the sentence, an unrepresented Fordyce expressed the desire to change her pleas but the court had already imposed its sentences.

World Hepatitis Day 2016 Govt focusing on small contractors’ role in public MoPH working towards eradicating viral procurement – Harmon hepatitis − Norton G

overnment has established a Cabinet Subcommittee to look into small contractors’ involvement in the public procurement system, according to Minister of State Joseph Harmon.

The subcommittee was established following many concerns raised by the contractors at a recent symposium held by the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) for new entrants into the pool of prequalified companies that are awarded government contracts.

The Minister of State disclosed at the post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday last that the issue grabbed the attention of Cabinet at its weekly meeting on Tuesday.

“It was agreed that every effort would be made to give legitimate support to small contractors, including their involvement in the public procurement process, and in this regard, Cabinet had mandated that a committee headed by Prime Minister (Moses Nagamootoo),” he stated.

The other members of the subcommittee include the Ministers of: Legal Affairs, Basil Williams; Public Infrastructure, David Patterson; Business, Dominic Gaskin; Finance, Winston Jordan, and Communities, Ronald Bulkan.

Harmon noted that the committee will look at how best small contractors can be incorporated into government’s procurement system.

ing field and for small contractors to be given the opportunities they deserve.

He pointed to the reference in the Small Business Act that says that at least 20 per cent of State contracts should be awarded to small contractors.

“The question is how do you quantify that; what mechanisms you put in place to guarantee that that happens? So these are things the committee will look at and see how best we can give effect to what is already there in the law,” he outlined.

Moreover, the Minister explained that the subcommittee will have to come up with recommendations to be handed over to the subject minister for implementation after approval by Cabinet.

However, Harmon noted that Minister David Patterson has already embarked on the process with the recent procurement seminar during which the MPI meaningfully engaged contractors.

The symposium provided the opportunity for small and new contractors to learn more on the National Procurement Act and prequalification for contracts as well as how to become compliant with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA); National Insurance Scheme (NIS); and local insurance.

Participants were also enlightened about the bid evaluation process and were made privy to a simulation bid submission. The simulation highlighted the “dos and don’ts” of bid submissions by providing participants with realistic examples.

Additionally, focus was placed on informing participants on the contract award process as well as the protest process.

Government recently established the ‘Bid Protest Committee’ in an effort to ensure transparency and accountability in the procurement process. This committee allows contractors who are not satisfied with the evaluation to make an objection to the process.

One company has already made an objection to the Committee. Cevon’s Waste Management Inc recently filed objections to the award of the $221 million contract to Puran Brothers Inc for the management of the HaagsBosch Landfill site at Eccles Industris Estate, East Bank Demerara.

Puran Bros Inc had emerged the most suitable contractor to maintain the disposal site from a lineup of several bidders and bagged the 12-month contract which was signed last Thursday.

n Thursday, Guyana joined with the rest of the Americas in observing “World Hepatitis Day”, and Public Health Minister Dr George Norton expressed gratitude towards the country’s “healthcare workers and all our UN partners and internal supporters for the tremendous efforts over the years as we work towards eradicating viral hepatitis.”

World Hepatitis Day 2016 was observed under the theme “Prevent Hepatitis. Act Now.” In a press release on Thursday, it was relayed that the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has had “remarkable progress” towards protecting Guyana from vaccine-preventable diseases. Moreover, Norton said the Ministry has moved from a childhood programme of vaccination over the last decade to include adolescents, and now the entire family: “Our motto – Not any child or family left unvaccinated.”

“I encourage you to ‘Know Hepatitis- Are you at risk, get tested, and if you are positive seek treatment,” said Dr Norton.

According to Norton, viral hepatitis is referred to as a “silent epidemic” since most people do not realise they are infected (asymptomatic) and, over decades, it slowly progresses to liver disease.

The Public Health Minister noted that over the last decade, Guyana has had success with its Immunisation Programme.

It was in the 1970s, he said, that the programme started to vaccinate against six diseases namely measles, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, diphtheria, and tuberculosis.

“But it was only in 2012, that additional antigens against diseases including yellow fever, hepatitis B, mumps, heamophilus influenza, rubella, rotavirus and pneumococcal, meningococcal and human papilloma virus were introduced.

Since then there has been significant progress towards protecting Guyana from vaccine-preventable diseases” Norton disclosed.

Cabinet clears $265M Cook to be slapped in contracts for with murder charge prisons’ food supplies I C abinet granted approval on Tuesday last to the award of several contracts for the procurement of food supplies for prisons across the country.

The contracts amounted to a whopping $265.9 million.

For the procurement of dietary supplies for the Georgetown Prison, contracts to the tune of $120.3 million were awarded. A contract for $1.3 million was awarded to Nigel’s Supermarket; $1.2 million to Guyana Trading Company: $49 million to Paradise Food Court and $68.6 million to Guynaz Green Grocery.

The total value of the contracts awarded for the procurement of food supplies for the New Amsterdam Prison amounted to $50.2 million.

With regards to the procurement of food supplies for the Lusignan Prison, contracts totaling $20.2 million was approved by Cabinet.

Guynaz Green Grocery bagged $11.1 million Paradise Food Court got $6.8 million; Dabi’s Variety the sum of $1.6 million; Guyana Trading Company $384,960 and Nigel’s Supermarket the sum of $226,680.

t was an intense scene as a cook who is before the courts for the attempted murder of her child’s father is expected to be slapped with additional charges, after the man succumbed to his injuries.

It was alleged that on July 2 the woman, Alexis Turpin, 25, of Campbell Street, Lodge, Georgetown, had unlawfully and maliciously wounded the father of her child, Sherwin Johnson, with intent to commit murder.

Turpin appeared once again at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday, to answer to the charge of attempted murder.

However, the prosecution contended that since Johnson succumbed whilst receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public

Hospital (GPH), new charges of a more serious nature will be laid against the mother.

The prosecution had previously tendered evidence contending that on the day in question, the defendant went to the home of the now dead man and stabbed him with a claw bar.

Turpin was remanded and will hear the modified charges when she makes her next court appearance on August 26.

As the accused made her way out of court, the escorting officer had to swiftly place her in the prisoner’s holding cell as family of the deceased were charging at the defendant.

Lone bandit robs Essequibo businesswoman - unknown male carts off cash

olice in G Division (Essequibo Coast/ Essequibo Islands) are investigating an alleged robbery under arm committed on businesswoman Bibi Mohamed of Queenstown Village.

The incident occurred on July 28, 2016 around 09:30h at her Queenstown home on the Essequibo Coast.

The businesswoman was robbed $195,000 in cash when a male approached her wanting to purchase plyboard.

Relating her story, the victim in tears said that she was in her kitchen washing dishes when she heard someone calling.

Upon responding she then saw an afro-Guyanese male of medium built, about 5 feet in height, enquiring about the price for one plyboard. After disclosing the

value at $3000 per sheet the male left and returned about half hour later in a tinted white car with a $5000 bill.

The woman then collected the money and left for the kitchen to change same when she was approached by the person with a hand gun.

She related that he placed it to her head demanding that she not scream and to hand over all the money.

Without hesitation, Mohamed said, she handed over the money and the man then escaped. She immediately thereafter raised an alarm and a subsequent report was made to ranks from the Major Crime Unit at the Anna Regina Police Station.

Police visited the scene but no evidence was found.

Statements were however taken and police are continuing their investigations.

Prison officer placed on remand

prison officer of 43 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was on Thursday placed on remand after appearing before Magistrate Leron Daly on three charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Christopher Elvis plead not guilty to the charges which read that on July 24 at 210 Princes Street he allegedly had in his possession a .38 revolver without being the holder a firearm licence. It was also alleged that he had in his possession five rounds of .38 ammunition and that at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he behaved in a manner provoking to the virtual complainant (VC) Orlando Harris.

The Prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question the Police operated on a report that the defendant was behaving in an ill manner to the VC

and upon being intercepted, the Police decided to search the car that he was driving which revealed the gun and ammunitions.

The prosecution disclosed that the gun was found in the air vent under the bonnet of the car.

The defendant was refused bail and will return to court on August 15.

few years back, Dr David Hinds proposed and defended the thesis that African Guyanese were suffering from the effects of “marginalisation”. In the face of widespread opposition, this Ravi Dev writer agreed with Dr Hinds and wrote several articles explaining his position.

One reason why the charges of “marginalisation” were contested was by and large its articulation had been disjunctured from its roots of racism and African slavery. What was being ignored was, as articulated by Cornell West, “the lingering effects of slavery and past discrimination in the continued attack on black humanity and racist stereotypes which are designed to destroy black self-image,” and in the process keep Africans on the “margins” of society.

In Guyana, the promise of emancipation was also subverted. In economic terms, of course, most famously was the undercutting of the bargaining power of the freed slaves to sell their labour when the sugar planters were authorised and facilitated by the state to import cheap labour from, in order, Madeira, West Indies/Africa, India and China.

As to whether the ex-slaves could have actually extracted greater wages in an environment of plummeting sugar prices is another issue but the fact remains that the agency of the freed Africans to struggle directly against their oppressive conditions was weakened. They were marginalised.

Laws were enacted to compel individuals who wanted to purchase land to do so in plots of at least one hundred acres.

This was clearly intended to discourage Africans from purchasing land since it demanded a substantial capital investment that could only be met by persons pooling their resources together.

In those instances where the challenge was met – and in several instances where even whole plantations were purchased – the viability of the endeavour was frequently challenged by the refusal of the authorities to integrate the drainage and irrigation system to that of the nascent village movement. Today, we all appreciate the imperative of a functioning D&I system for our survival. Steered into the resultant growing urban centre of Georgetown, the efforts of enterprising Africans and Coloureds to break into petty retailing by supplying vegetables and ground provisions to the urban population, was nipped in the bud when the authorities favoured the newly arrived Portuguese, who quickly decamped the plantations for the retail trade.

Africans who had “gone into the bush” to try their hand in gold mining remained as petty “pork knockers” since the onerous land rights question were not lifted until the 1890s when the Portuguese were in a position to take advantage of the newly discovered goldfields in the Essequibo.

In all urban centres of the 19th century, an underclass developed with its distinctly picaresque orientation – this was true of Dickens’s London as with Rodway’s Georgetown.

In Georgetown the lumpen element just happened to be African. In the countryside, refusing to be driven back to the sugar plantations (excepting for the well-paid artisans who never left), the Africans were driven into subsistence agriculture.

The economic marginalisation of Africans that was the hallmark of slavery was therefore transferred into the “emancipation” era. As I have tried to explain so often, once a pattern of activity is transferred into habit by the workings of the institutions (both formal and informal) the individual becomes socialised into accepting it as ‘the way the world is’ and it becomes extremely difficult to alter – especially if the habits have been transferred across generations as it has been in Guyana. Witness Indians and the Police Force.

Most Indians and other individuals including many Africans – and that’s another story – look at the present situation of Africans and assert, “Hey! My foreparents came here with nothing on their backs and worked hard, saved as did my parents and so we’re doing better. Why can’t “marginalised” Africans do the same?” They ignore the possible “lingering effects” of the economic system and its echo in the psyches of individuals which may affect their ability to compete within the present system.

As it necessarily addresses this marginalisation of African Guyanese, the government must be careful it does not marginalise other groups such as Indian-Guyanese, as was charged by the Opposition Leader.

Venezuela’s economic crisis

“Mass deportation is not a sensible thing to do in these circumstances” – political activist

he shadow of hunger and poverty has struck Guyana’s once oil-rich neighbour Venezuela and people are fleeing by the thousands looking for a place to survive, a job to provide food for their families.

But their neighbours are on the fence on whether to offer assistance, as the ordinary Venezuelan goes hungry.

These were the sentiments expressed by political activist David Hinds on Thursday in an interview with Guyana Times.

“If people are undergoing hardships, they are not always going to obey the rules. What they will be doing is fleeing as a form of survival and so we will have Venezuelans who will be coming into Guyana illegally and we have to find a way of balancing respect for the law and also balancing that with the humanitarian situation,” Hinds asserted.

Currently, Venezuela is suffering its worst ever economic crisis; the once rich country now has the world’s worst negative growth rate (-8 per cent) and an inflation rate of 482 per cent.

Unemployment is climbing and thousands are lined up every day to receive portions of staples.

Everything is rationed and transported under armed guard; supermarkets are looted and protests for the removal of the government are wracking the country.

ported on Monday, Hinds stated that Guyana should deal with the situation on two levels—a governmental political level and more importantly, on a humanitarian level.

On Wednesday, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said the Government has a humanitarian responsibility to accept Venezuelans arriving here in search of better lives but demanded that they should not do so illegally.

He stated that Guyana is in treaty to international agreements which give support to countries in situations like Venezuela and so: “We have made it clear that on humanitarian grounds that we will not turn back Venezuelans who come to seek help here in Guyana… so anybody coming from Venezuela for food and

things like that, we support people who come to Guyana on those grounds.”

Hinds however stated that mass deportation of illegal Venezuelans might not be the sensible thing, given the circumstances. He noted that while there will be people who will use the crisis to enter Guyana to do crime, he does believe that people are legitimately fleeing Venezuela for humanitarian reasons and the good ones should not be deported: “We need to sift the bad ones from the good ones.”

He went on: “Mass deportation is not a sensible thing to do in these circumstances because we are going to look like the Europeans who deported Syrians. I would not like to see Guyana engaged in that.”

For years, Guyana and Venezuela have been divided over a border controversy, where Venezuela has been unrelenting in staking claims over the Essequibo County.

Hinds, nevertheless, stated that Guyana needs to make the distinction between the people and the government: “It is their government who has been strident in wanting our lands but the ordinary people no… we have to make the distinction between them and their government.”

He continued:“The ordinary people are fleeing a situation that is becoming terrible…and we have to in some way not link assistance

to poor people in Venezuela with the border controversy. Ordinary people in Venezuela did not make the policies that have led to the problems that they are having so I think we have to be human even as we take into consideration our political interest and our national interest.”

Among those deported on Monday were five mothers and nine fathers, who were miners. With the help of a translator, the refugees cried out that they had fled-

Venezuela with the hope of finding jobs in Guyana to support their families who have remained in the crisisridden country.

One woman explained that they were punishing in Venezuela since there were no jobs and only very limited access to food.

Sources have confirmed that an additional 100 more are expected to be deported in the coming weeks.

Hinds stated that although Guyana is on a strain to provide for its people, the

topic of refugee status can be considered. “If we are going to go down the road of giving these people refugee status, then government needs to decide how many of them it can accommodate and where we will put them,” he said.

With Venezuela sliding further into crisis and no evidence of an economic turnaround, it is predicted that there will be a refugee crisis in the region as persons will continue to flee the country and enter its neighbouring countries.

Councillors pass No-Confidence Motion against Linden Town Clerk – allegedly prevented from entering office

ouncillors within the municipality of the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) on Wednesday passed a no confidence motion against Town Clerk (TC) Jenella Bowen, during the Council’s monthly Statutory Meeting.

The motion put forward

by Councillor Derron John and seconded by Councillor Neola Rogers, is the second in recent months against the TC, given that a motion was also passed against her in February under the previous Council.

It is also alleged that the TC was prevented from entering her office by a municipal constable on Thursday when she reported for duty; however this was denied

by Deputy Mayor Waneka Arindell and numerous Councillors.

Regardless, Bowen was observed sitting in the compound of the municipality in the morning hours where she remained until afternoon.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Arindell noted that the performance of the TC in relation to the management of the Council has become of great concern. Hence, she said the motion was passed by 10 Councillors, while two were against it. While she noted

it was not done in writing, Arindell said the motion was a recommendation from the Statutory Committee: “The decision arose out of varying issues that have been occurring over a period of time, of which some of these issues have been noted and discussed by the Mayor and Councillors...We saw her performance and management of the Council’s affairs as something of great concern... At the conclusion of this preliminary process at the statutory meeting, the incumbent Town Clerk was briefed and informed of the motion relative to her functions as of today. The Council did not debar or lock out Ms Bowen from the office or from performing her duties as Town Clerk. The attempt to disseminate false information to the public by the Town Clerk even in this matter is synonymous with the continued attitude and behaviour of this Town Clerk.”

In referencing the motion of the previous Council, Arindell stated that it was mentioned by Councillor John that it was the same action of stymieing the work of the Council by the TC which had led to it.

She refused to give specific details on what grounds the motion was passed, however Councillor John in-

dicated that it was due to the TC’s mismanagement of the Council. He said however, that she could still perform her duties at the office: “...because of the way that the Town Clerk performed we have moved such motion to have the Town Clerk removed from office as Town Clerk,” he said.

Councillor Rawle Friday, who was recently elected Acting Mayor by the Council also stated that the TC has not been relieved of her duties, but a decision is pending, since a letter was sent to the relevant minister informing of the Council’s decision.

The Deputy Mayor noted that the motion at this stage is a recommendation to the minister who will make a decision, but the TC

can still perform duties.

Meanwhile, the TC, sitting outside in the municipality compound, outlined that the motion was passed as a result of issues within the LM&TC: “I at this point am going through the paces...consulting with the legal aspect of this matter and I’m going to make a statement very very soon...I want to make sure that the legal aspect is correct...I will continue to embrace the law stringently like what I’ve been doing all the while. I know that I’m on the right track and I know that there’s going to be an investigation into this matter; and I am working with the law on this.”

Bowen declined to say whether she was barred from entering her office,

but noted that instructions were given and she was very respectful in following them: “Hence, I am sitting on this bench (outside) since 7:55 this morning...instructions were given and I did not oppose it.”

Only recently Mayor Carwyn Holland had accused Bowen of lacking respect for the municipality and failing to relate correspondence regarding the Council in a timely manner.

During a recent statutory meeting, Holland also informed Councillors that he had resorted to serving the TC an official written reprimand for failure to attend an important meeting, which had been scheduled to take place between the two, among other things.

The Mayor further indicated that there is evidence of a tendency by the Town Clerk to “act in an apathetic manner.” The Mayor at the time referred to correspondence, which he alleged were not handed over by the TC, or which he noted the Council was not made aware of in a timely manner.

According to him, there are some correspondences which urgently needed to be brought to the attention of the Mayor. Holland contended that there were several outstanding issues

which needed to be settled between him and the TC, but noted that he seemed not to have her attention.

Bowen had said that she believes there is some kind of mix-up as it relates to the roles and responsibilities of the administration versus that of the Council as well as the policy-maker and administration.

She said the aim of Committee meetings are to have all Councillors informed and correspondence shared. This led to the Mayor calling for such meetings to be respected.

In the end, Councillor Friday had moved a motion for all pertinent correspondence to be disclosed to the Mayor’s office in a timely manner.

Back in February, members of the previous Interim Management Committee of the LM&TC headed by Chairman Orrin Gordon, also passed a no confidence motion against the TC, following her decision not to rescind disciplinary letters against two of the Council’s employees.

The motion was passed during the final statutory meeting of the Council before it was replaced by the present Council, following Local Government Elections.

France church attack: Second suspect in priest killing named

rench prosecutors have identified the second man involved in the killing of a priest in a Normandy church on Tuesday as 19-year-old Abdel Malik Petitjean.

Like the other attacker, Adel Kermiche, he was known to the security services. The teenagers were shot dead by police outside the church in Saint-Etiennedu-Rouvray where they had killed Father Jacques Hamel, 86, and taken hostages.

So-called Islamic State (IS) released a video of what it said were the two men pledging allegiance to the group. “Following DNA tests, it emerged that the terrorist has been identified as Abdel Malik Nabil Petitjean,” a source in the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

a watch list as a potential security threat since June after trying to enter Syria from Turkey.

investigation as saying anti-terrorism police had been searching for a man in the days before the attack who “strongly resembled” Petitjean, after receiving a tip-off from a foreign intelligence agency about an imminent attack.

Indian couple hacked to death over US22 cent debt

n axe-wielding shopkeeper hacked a couple to death in northern India Thursday after they failed to pay a debt of 22 US cents, police said.

The middle-aged couple from the lowest Dalit caste in Uttar Pradesh state were on their way to work early Thursday when the grocery store owner asked them to pay their 15-rupee (US22 cent) debt.

“The shopkeeper demanded money but they pleaded to be able to pay

it later. He became enraged and attacked them with an axe,” Arun Kumar, the investigating officer in Mainpuri district, told AFP. The officer said the couple had bought goods from the shop last week with a promise to pay the 60-yearold owner within a few days.

“Their refusal to pay made him angry and he killed them,” Kumar said.

The owner was arrested soon after the incident and the murder weapon recovered, the officer said.

Hundreds of people are murdered in India each year over sudden provocations, often trivialities.

In 2014, almost 15 per cent of the murders in New Delhi were unmotivated, according to Police, and were mostly committed by noncriminals acting in a fit of rage.

More than 33,000 people were murdered in India in 2014, according to latest figures released by national criminal records bureau.

Syria’s powerful Nusra Front says ending link to al Qaeda

l Qaeda’s powerful Syrian branch announced on Thursday it was ending its relationship with the global jihadist network founded by Osama bin Laden and changing its name, to remove what it called a pretext used by world powers to attack Syrians.

In the first known video statement ever to show his face, the leader of the Nusra Front, Mohamad al-Golani,

announced that the group would re-form under a new name, with “no ties with any foreign party”.

The move was being made “to remove the excuse used by the international community – spearheaded by America and Russia – to bombard and displace Muslims in the Levant: that they are targeting the Nusra Front which is associated with Al Qaeda,” he said. The group would now be

called Jabhat Fatah al-Sham.

Golani appeared in the video flanked by two other Nusra Front figures, in front of Jabhat Fatah al Sham’s new white flag. Nusra Front’s old flag was black, the colour used by ultra-hardline jihadist groups such as Al Qaeda and Islamic State.

Earlier on Thursday, bin Laden’s successor as al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, announced that he was giving the Nusra Front his blessing to break away. In his message, Golani thanked Zawahri for putting the interests of the Syrian people ahead of organisational interests.

The move appeared to be an attempt to appeal to Syrians who have long had deep misgivings about Nusra’s links with al Qaeda and the significant presence of foreign jihadists among its ranks, which set it apart from Western-backed rebel groups.

China and Russia to hold joint drills in South China Sea

hina says it is to hold joint military exercises with Russia in the South China Sea, amid heightened tensions over the disputed waters. The announcement follows a ruling by an international tribunal earlier this month that rejected China’s claims in the region.

The Chinese Government has vowed to ignore the ruling. China’s Defence Ministry said September’s drills would be “routine” and would not “target any third party”.

He said the drills aimed to “consolidate and devel-

op” China and Russia’s comprehensive strategic partnership, and “enhance the capabilities of the two navies to jointly deal with maritime security threats”.

China and Russia have conducted joint naval exercises for several years which analysts say is designed to stem US power in the Asia-Pacific region.

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims to territory in the South China Sea. China has backed its claims with island-building and naval patrols. Although

the US says it does not take sides in territorial disputes, it has sent military ships and planes near disputed islands which it says is aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation.

Earlier this month, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague dismissed China’s claims to much of the disputed area saying they had “no legal basis”. The Philippines, which brought the case, called on China to respect the ruling. The ruling is binding but the Permanent Court of Arbitration has no powers of enforcement.

New fish species discovered in the Caribbean Sea

cientists have discovered a new species of the vibrantly coloured scorpionfish in the Caribbean Sea. The bright orange-red fish was found at depths of 95 to 160 metres (310 to 525 feet), in waters close to Curaçao.

The fish, that is the deepest-living member of its genus in the western Atlantic Ocean, was discovered using a manned submersible – the Curasub, operated by the Smithsonian Institute’s Deep Reef Observation Project (DROP).

According to a new study published in ZooKeys, conventional scuba divers cannot go beyond depths of 30 to 50 metres below the water surface, but Curasub can go up to 300 meters, and is used by marine scientists to study the lesser-known tropical marine

The scientists have named the newly discovered scorpionfish Scorpaenodes barrybrowni in honour of freelance photographer Barry Brown, who “has patiently, diligently, and expertly taken photographs of hundreds of fishes and invertebrates captured alive by DROP Investigators,” the authors write. The fish’s

common name is Stellate Scorpionfish, which the authors say is in reference to the star-shaped yellowish spots on the fish’s pectoral fin and radiating pigment markings highlighting its eyes.

n an effort to raise awareness on Trafficking In Persons (TIP), Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan joined the team in their walk around the Bourda Market vicinity, distributing flyers and informing persons to report an knowledge of the felony being committed.

According to Ramjattan, TIP is known to be occurring worldwide and Guyana is playing its part in raising awareness, since it has become a “growing phenomenon” locally. The Minister highlighted that foreign and local women living in remote areas are being misguided into thinking that they are going to live luxuriously in Guyana or acquire a job, but the reality of it is they are brought to be exploited in various ways.

“We also want to emphasise that it is not only that women are brought in for sexual exploitation but this crime has to do with the abduction of women for labour exploitation too,” he said.

He further explained that

there are aspects that need to be improved upon, including “lots more investigating, we got to do lots more for the victims of Human Trafficking and for the public to be aware.”

Ramjattan also mentioned that one of the prime areas that sexual exploitation occurs is in the various nightclubs and the team has an intention to visit the respective nightclubs in Georgetown in an effort to reduce TIP. n light of mounting concerns from the Opposition People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and other quarters of society over the increasing militarisation of Guyana, President David Granger, who himself is a retired Army Chief-ofStaff, has sought to defend his Administration’s appointments of several military personalities in high profile positions.

The President told reporters during the taping of this week’s television programme – The Public Interest – on Thursday that the military officers appointed by his Administration are experienced and competent persons.

“These are human beings, these are people with skills, you know. They are not a separate breed of citizens, we can’t deprive them of their rights if they have the talent, the experience, the qualifications,” Granger stated.

According to the Head of State, his Administration is facing the brunt of criticism on militarisation when the mass appointments of Army officers to senior Government positions began under the Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar led Administrations.

In fact, he disclosed that when he took office in May 2015, there were about 10 Army officers that were appointment by the PPP/C Administration. The President even listed several of those persons including Major General Joe Singh and Colonel Chabulall Ramsaroop, among others.

Moreover, Granger went on to say that he will not overlook qualified Army officers because of their association with the military. don’t discriminate “I against them and obviously Mr Jagdeo and Mr Ramotar didn’t discriminate against them because I inherited a large number of former military officers who have been appointed by the PPP Administration,” he stated.

he Indian Action Committee (IAC) on Sunday will be holding an “Evening of Entertainment”, to pay tribute to the late legendary Bollywood playback singers, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh Chand Matthur and Kishore Kumar at the National Cultural Centre.

Considering that the three Legends made immeasurable contributions to Indian music through the release of thousands of songs, the Evening of Entertainment is fitting.

The celebration marks the 36th death anniversary of Rafi who passed away in 1980. Matthur died on August 27, 1976 and Kishore on October 13, 1987.

Although many years have passed since their deaths, the singers’ musicalities remain widely circulated in Guyana. Following his death in 1980, local Rafi, Mukesh and Kishore singing competitions were introduced as fans began to initiate ways of honouring the memories of these icons.

According to a statement from the IAC, in its continuous efforts to aid in the preservation of Indian culture, the institution has over the years held simple events to honour these singers: “It believes that the treasure of music they gifted the world is irreplaceable and timeless and must be preserved. Music is an integral part of culture and it is in this context that the ‘Evening of Entertainment’ is being held.”

A number of local singers will be paying homage to these legends while the Nrytya Dance Troupe led by Roshini Boodhoo will perform relevant dances.

In addition to the tribute, the show features a bonus presentation of the comedy “ChotiBackoo,” a spinoff of the popular Indian Soap, “ChotiBahu”. The play is a hilarious exchange between the old and young generations that will have the audience in stitches.

Written and Directed by Neaz Subhan, winner of the Best Playwright Prize in 2013 for “When Chocolate Melts”, it stars Michael Ignatius, Chris Gopaul, Romel Edmondson, Nirmala Narine, Narda Mohamed, and Paul Budhna.

The show commences at 19:00h and tickets, costing $1500, $1000 and $500 are on sale at the National Cultural Centre.

oday will be the final day for the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) Annual Early Savers Summer Camp at the Bank’s Recreational Centre, in Bel Air Park.

The camp, which started on Monday, has catered for two age groups − seven to 10 years for which sessions are conducted in the morning, and 11 to 15 years for which afternoon sessions are held.

The younger group were involved in a storytelling session followed by an arts and craft session facilitated by the Guyana Women Artist Association. Meanwhile, the older group were more actively involved in arts and craft projects such as tiedying, decorative ceramic plates and other such activities.

The camp ends today with an exhibition of the art pieces and a presentation ceremony of the winners of the best arts and craft projects.

The GBTI Annual Summer Camp caters for children who are members of the Early Savers Club, and forms a part of the benefits that are enjoyed by being a part of the Club.

ack Davis, an illustrator who poked fun at celebrities and politicians in Mad magazine for decades and whose work appeared on the covers of Time and TV Guide, died on Wednesday. He was 91.

The cause was complications of a stroke, his son, Jack Davis III, said. Davis was a prolific artist, drawing posters for movies like “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” and “The Long Goodbye,” as well as record album covers.

“There wasn’t anything Jack couldn’t do,” Mad’s Editor, John Ficarra said in a statement on the magazine’s website. “Front covers, caricatures, sports scenes, monsters — his comedic range was just incredible.”

He got his start in 1950 selling drawings to EC Comics, which published horror fiction titles like “Tales From the Crypt.” Two years later, amid an outcry over the potentially harmful effects of violent comics on children, the company started what became Mad magazine, edited by Harvey Kurtzman. Davis was a member of the “Usual Gang of Idiots,” the nickname for the crew that put out the magazine.

“There is not a humorous illustrator in the past 50 years who hasn’t been influenced by him,” the magazine’s current Art Director, Sam Viviano, said in its statement.

Jack Burton Davis Jr was born in Atlanta on December 2, 1924, the only child of Callie Davis, a schoolteacher, and Jack Davis, a salesman. After high school, he joined the Navy, serving in Guam, where he drew a comic

called Boondocker for The Navy Times.

He returned to his home state and enrolled in the University of Georgia, where he drew for the student newspaper. Before long, his teachers were encouraging him to go to New York to pursue

his art career. He moved North and enrolled in classes at the Art Students League.

His early work was dark, craggy, and high contrast, while most illustrators at the time used more realistic and flattering styles, said Chris Garvin, the Director of the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art.

“He really looks like a painter in the way he uses a marker,” Garvin said. “That is something new for illustration at that time.”

H i s work softened later on. He became known for drawing all sorts of characters with oversized heads and feet, and skinny legs between.

He established himself as a versatile artist known for producing distinctive work quickly. He soon expanded into movie posters, advertising, album covers and other promotional materials.

“I remember going into New York and seeing big, threestory posters, and he’d say, ‘I did that!’” Davis’s son recalled.

“There was a time when every single day, you could go to the supermarket or train station, and you could see his work. Those were the glory years.”

Davis and his wife, Dena, returned to Georgia from New York in the 1990s, settling on St Simons Island in a house that their son, an architect, designed.

The National Cartoonists Society honoured him with a lifetime achievement award in 1996, and he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2005.

Hooper’s hat trick steers GCC RHTYSC starts Vintage to win over Pitbulls construction of family D recreational park evin Hooper hit a hat trick to lead the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Vintage over Pitbulls, as the Lucozade Indoor Hockey Championship continued on Tuesday at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

Vintage won 6-3. Hooper began the assault with a fifth minute conversion before levelling the score two minutes later to complete his brace. Dwayne Scott handed Vintage the lead as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the ninth minute.

Scott then recorded his second goal in the 18th minute to take the score to 4-2. Not to be outdone, Hooper secured his third goal of the evening with a 25th minute strike.

Jolted by the assault of the Vintage unit, Pitbulls pulled one back in the form of Meshach Sargeant in the 27th minute. However, any hope of Pitbulls staging a comeback was thwarted as Damon Woodroffe scored in the 37th minute to seal the outcome; Samuel Woodroffe had given Pitbulls the lead in the second minute.

GCC downed Hikers 3-1 in a female encounter. Tricia Fiedtkou gave GCC the lead as she found the back of the net in the second minute. Gabriella Xavier made it 2-0 compliments of a fifth minute conversion.

With the score remaining unchanged heading into the second half interval, Hikers pulled one back in the 32nd minute through a Maria Munroe strike but Rebecca Xavier sealed the win for Pizza Hut GCC with a 34th minute strike.

he eight cricket teams of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) has started the construction of a family recreational park for residents in the Lower Corentyne, Berbice.

The playfield which is being constructed in memory of the RHTYSC first patron and late Executive President of Guyana Hugh Desmond Hoyte is part of a massive ‘Say No and Say Yes’ programme in conjunction with B Division (Berbice) of the Guyana Police Force.

The playfield which is scheduled to be officially opened on Friday, September 23, is been constructed in front of the Area H ground, in Rose Hall. Secretary/CEO of the RHTYSC, Hilbert Foster expressed confidence that the project would be successfully completed in time for the opening date.

The playfield is one of the major projects that the cricket teams and the RHTYSC would be undertaking as part of the 46th anniversary of the township of Rose Hall which would be celebrated from September 14-25.

The Regional Democratic Council of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) un-

der the Chairmanship of President David Granger assisted the cricket teams to level the proposed site by donating 15 loads of loam while machinery from contractor Annirud Ramcharitar assisted in levelling the venue.

Fencing of the venue would commence shortly, with materials donated by Tony Amerally of Memorex INC of New Amsterdam.

The playfield would consist of a benab, swings, seesaws, slides, a flower garden and seating accommodation for families.

The long serving Club official stated that the Social Protection and Public Health Ministries would be making financial contributions towards the project. The venue would be branded with family related messages and slogans with the main objectives of promoting social cohesion among family members and also spreading the ‘Say No to Drugs, Suicide and Crime’ message.

Meanwhile, the RHTYSC is inviting overseas-based Rose Hall residents to return home for the period September 14-25 to celebrate the 46th anniversary of the township. The Club has plans to make the Town Week memorable for every resident and hopes to attract

hundreds of tourists to the town during the period.

Among the major activities planned are the opening of a playfield, the launching of a booklet on Rose Hall, a day of sport, “yard fowl” curry competition, career and business fair, medical outreach programme, steel band concert, youth dancing competition, 5/5 cricket tournament, and a public exhibition and march pass with over 1000 marchers.

The entire township would also be transformed by the cricket teams with Guyana and Rose Hall town flags being placed on poles across the town, as well as illuminating the Arch Square. Banners would also be placed to welcome visitors while every post would be painted in the colours of the Golden Arrowhead.

In addition, a large banner would inform visitors of the developments in the township and outstanding residents produced by the town over the period 19702016. Foster also disclosed that the RHTYSC was working with the Government Information News Agency (GINA) to produce a television documentary on Rose Hall, which would be launched during the opening ceremony on September 14.

ussian competitors to take part in the Olympic Games as the nation's athletes begin to travel to Brazil. Governing bodies must rule on whether Russian athletes can compete in Rio following the country's doping scandal.

So far 108 of the 387-strong Russian team have been banned from the Games, which get under way on August 5.

aribbean Premier League international cricket director Tom Moody and chairman Richard Bevan talk about the tournament's foray into the American market It's a glorious early morning on the Atlantic coastline of Florida route A1A. Cruise ships are out in the distance, swimmers and surfers are beginning to populate the waters, and beachgoers lounging around in the sand looking to get a good tan.

On the opposite side of the street, two cricket administrators are having a casual morning coffee, looking fairly relaxed despite the historic event they are overseeing.

"It's a fun few days coming up, but a serious few days as well" Caribbean Premier League chairman Richard Bevan tells ESPNcricinfo. "It's not just about turning up and playing a bit of cricket on some grass. It's about serious progression.

"This is the first professional tournament being played in America.

Cricket has come and gone in America going back to the 1750s, but for the CPL being the first professional tournament, it's a very serious business."

A seven-mile drive west from Fort Lauderdale Beach along Sunrise Boulevard lies the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill where the CPL will be staging six games over four days this weekend. As the first overseas franchise league to attempt to stage matches in America, the historic nature of the event isn't lost on Bevan or his colleague Tom Moody, the CPL's international director of cricket, as the league tries to make a splash in Florida, and more broadly to the country as a whole.

"We want six entertaining games, we want to bring

the biggest party in sport and introduce it to a market that's got a taste for cricket," Moody says. "But we want to give them more than a taste. We want to give them a full meal.

"If we continue to repeat what we've been doing over the last few weeks in the Caribbean here in Lauderhill, it will be a win because we know that whether people have been introduced to the game before or it's their very first taste of the game, it'll be something that'll intrigue them and they'll want to

Taylor and Samuel Badree appeared at a Miami Marlins baseball game last month to throw out the ceremonial first pitch and give some promotional exposure to the CPL. Jamaica Tallawahs, the first team to arrive in Florida a full week before the first match in Lauderhill, have been leading the charge with regular kids' clinics at the stadium and other teams have followed suit.

The CPL in conjunction with the ICC Americas staff has held a series of clinics and seminars for coaches and umpires throughout the region. Moody spent 10 hours on Tuesday work-

ing with local coaches on the philosophies of the game and there was a presentation given by Kumar Sangakkara. Among those attending the seminar to improve their coaching skills were former Nepal coach Pubudu Dassanayake, now based in Canada, and former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who lives in Orlando and is looking to get more involved with coaching locally.

Initiatives are also in place at the high performance level. USA's 30-man national squad arrived on Wednesday night and on Thursday they are participating in a fielding master class session led by Trevor Penney. On Friday, a USA XI will play a combined CPL XI in an exhibition curtainraiser T20 ahead of that night's match between the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders.

The USA players will also be interspersed among the six CPL teams to help them get a taste of professional environment with the help of team meetings, warm-ups and being in the dugouts.

"I think we've shown that over the past couple of days with the initiatives that the CPL has been embracing with regards to school visits, coaching clinics, a big day with a coaching seminar that I ran with [ICC Americas consultant] Tom Evans which from all accounts was a great success, that type of exposure and experience they've probably never had before," Moody says.

"You take away just small things like that and the value of those types of things. We're running a fielding master class with all the top coaches along with the USA team. So they'll be right at their fingertips of getting some world-class experiences both in a lecture theatre and also on the field of play. We've got the game

CPL officials have earlier made statements that they view matches in Florida as a gateway to a bigger US market opportunity in New York, and perhaps extending even further north across the border into Toronto. There have also been discussions held by officials planning to make a visit to Texas to investigate the possibility of staging matches at a new private facility outside of Houston.

Such plans may be cause for concern for Lauderhill officials, particularly after the USA's only ICC-certified ODI stadium was snubbed last year by the Cricket All-Stars tour, which opted to play in baseball stadiums with drop-in pitches in New York, Houston and Los Angeles. While Bevan acknowledges other destinations may be a possibility, he says the CPL is committed to making Florida a staple of their annual calendar.

"It's not just the CPL. It's the CPL, the WICB, the ICC looking out where we can best help grow the game," Bevan says. "If the United States cricket authorities and the ICC say we'd also like you to grow the game in New York and California, then if we can do that from a growth perspective, fine.

But we are here in Florida.

We are looking to be based with this tournament here for a long period of time and to grow the game here. So the commitment is an obvious one.

their fifth consecutive title while the city side will be looking to avenge their heart rending loss.

The Digicel head further stated, “it has been an exciting tournament, we went to all 10 regions to play

football, it has been amazing, so we don't expect anything but an exciting final.”

Coach of the Linden side, Delon Peters, said he expects nothing but the best from the winning champions for the fifth time, as

they have only lost once in six years.

On the opposing side, Principal of Chase Academic Foundation, Henry Chase is brewing with confidence as he firmly believes his team will win

the coveted title since their team has been playing exceptionally well thus far in the tournament.

Coordinator of the Championship Lavern Fraser, thanked all the additional assistant coordinators that would have helped in running the successful tournament, but noted that preparations would have started in March.

Fraser highlighted that a lot of schools now have coaches which shows signs of improvement; however, she made mention to the fact that teachers and coaches still do not offer the technical aspect as regards to registrations for teams and it is something they will be able to look at next year.

The final is slated for Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium and the winner of the event is slated to receive $1,000,000 toward the funding of a school project and the championship trophy while the second-place finisher will receive $700,000 and the runners-up accolade.

The third and fourthplaced unit will walk away with $400,000 and $350,000 and the corresponding trophy. Similarly, $100,000 will be awarded to each zone winner.

The third place-playoff will be between Sir Leon’s Lesson and Bush Lot Secondary, starting at 16:00h, while the final kicks off at 18:00h.

Mohammed Jr, speaking at a press conference on Thursday noted that the event is different from the previous ones, with riders going up against each other for the biggest payout in the history of Caribbean horse racing.

“For the first time, the first prize will be $4 million as well as $500,000 bonus for the winning horse of the feature event and $200,000 for the winning jockey.”

Mohammed indicated that this event is not only for race lovers but is an occasion where families can come out and have a day well spent with enjoyment.

This event will see racers from the United States of America, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname,

hen St Kitts and Nevis Patriots meets with the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) tonigh,t it would be the former’s pride which would be at stake while the latter must win to remain in the top four on the points standing table.

The two teams are meeting for the first time in this year’s tournament and the match will be played at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Fort Lauderdale,

Florida, USA. TKR is currently in third position with four wins from eight matches, while the Patriots are in the cellar position with one win from eight matches and no chance of advancing to the next round. However, their pride is at stake and they must try to win their remaining two matches to finish on a positive note.

On paper, their batting line up looks very strong and they must seek consolation wins in their final two matches with the likes

of Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis, Faf du Plesis and Brad Hodge. The batting is not their only strong point, since their bowling comprises of Samuel Badree and Tambraiz Shamsi. However, they have failed to execute throughout the tournament, thus finding themselves at the bottom of the table.

TKR on the other hand is closing in on a photo finish with the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Tridents and Zouks, to fill the remaining three spots for the playoffs. To date, their four wins have come on the back of the team’s all-round performance with bat, ball and fielding and this must be maintained if they are to win tonight’s game.

Colin Munro, Hashim Amla and Dwayne Bravo have been good with the bat prior to TKR’s last match which was won by Umar Akmal’s heroics. Their batting is experience in this format and could be harsh against oppositions’ bowlers.

Sunil Narine is their top bowler and he along with Bravo, Kevon Cooper and Ronsford Beaton has been doing a great job.

TKR is the favourite to win tonight’s encounter but they must beware of the Patriots who would like to end on a positive note.

Those were the words of long-serving RHTY&SC, MS, Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster to four outstanding Berbicians as the Club hosted the fifth presentation ceremony of the ANSA McAL Award of Excellence programme.

The four Berbicians honoured were Dhieranidranauth Somwaru, Angela Haniff, Leila Clarkes-Daniels and Candy Thomas-Batson.

Foster stated that the ANSA McAL Award of Excellence was established by the RHTY&SC with the main objective of recognising and honouring unsung heroes who have worked beyond the call of duty to make a positive difference in the lives of their fellow Guyanese.

Four awards are conferred every year under the sub-headings of Health, Sports, Education and Community Development.

Quoting a popular song by famed Guyanese artiste Dave Martins, Foster stated that the Caribbean needed to recognise its heroes and questions must not be asked about ‘where are your heroes’. The experienced youth and sports administrator noted that emphasis was only placed on the contribution of sportsmen and politicians, while the invaluable contributions of sports administrators, teachers, nurses, community workers, doctors, police officers and firemen among others went unrecognised.

On an annual basis, the cricket teams and over-35 group of the RHTY&SC host a total of 12 major awards, including Dolphin Award of Excellence, Tribute to Retired Teachers, Tribute to Heroes, Tribute to Outstanding Teachers, Tribute to Law Enforcement Officers and Tribute to Outstanding Mothers/ Fathers. Foster urged the

awardees to share their vast experience to assist the younger generation, and also challenged them to continue serving Guyana, as we strive to make our country a better place for all to live in.

Secretary/CEO Foster expressed gratitude to the management of ANSA McAL, especially Managing Director Beverly Harper for their support of the RHTYSC, MS, over the years.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, former Hospital Administrator Leila ClarkeDaniels congratulated the RHTY&SC, MS, for the outstanding work it was doing for youths, the elderly and less fortunate in Berbice.

Clarke-Daniels stated that the awardees felt privileged to be honoured by Guyana’s leading club and noted that their combined service to Guyana was as a result of love of their fellow countrymen. She expressed gratitude to ANSA McAL for sponsoring the award ceremony and pledged that the awardees would continue playing their part in moulding the minds of the younger generation.

Clarke-Daniels was honoured under the sub-heading of Health for her work as a Hospital Administrator.

Angela Haniff was recognised for her contribution to Sports as the hardworking Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board, while Somwaru was honoured for his 47 years as an educator who has moulded the minds of thousands of youths. Thomas-Batson for decades has served the less fortunate, and she was honoured under the subheading of Community Development. Each of the 2016 ANSA McAL awardees received a framed Certificate of Excellence, a trophy as Award for Excellence medallion and a collection of gifts. he long awaited debut of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the United States of America (USA) happened on Thursday when the Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated the Barbados Tridents by six wickets with 10 balls to spare in a true Caribbean-style atmosphere at the Central Broward County Recreational Park in Lauderhill Florida.

porting the Guyana Amazon Warriors, it was clear that CPL was the big winner with the spectators celebrating every moment from the singing of the national anthem of the United States of America to begin the match to the winning run off the bat of Sohail Tanvir.

Smith and Maddinson added 92 for the first wicket to knock the wind out of the sail of the Tridents. Smith was especially severe on his former team mates and raised his half century from 32 balls with five fours and three sixes while Maddison got to his landmark off 39 balls. Smith, who played with the Tridents in the previous years, was first to go. When on 50 he hit Raymon Reifer to long on at 92/1 in the 11th over after making his third half century of the season. Maddinson, in his second match followed at 112/2 in the 14th over. The Warriors stumbled briefly but Chris Barnwell and Tanvir saw their team home safely and into the next stage.

Raymon Reifer had two wickets while Imran Khan and Pollard had one each.

For the important game 25, the Guyana Amazon Warriors brought back Christopher Barnwell and Steven Jacobs for Orlando Peters and Shimron Hetmyer from the last match which ended in defeat against the St. Lucia Zouks while the Tridents also made two changes with Akeal Hosein and Raymon Reifer came in for Navin Stewart and Shamar Springer.

After being sent in, the Tridents were never allowed to open and were eventually limited to 142/7 from their 20 overs. Their innings was held

together by Shoaib Mailk who came in at number four with the score on 49/2 in the seventh over. Malik hit Sohail Tanivr over midwicket for his second six off the last ball of the Tridents’ innings to raise his half. In all Mailk faced 44 balls and also hit three fours.

The Pakistani also featured in a 48-run partnership for the third wicket with David Wiese, the best of the innings in just six overs and two balls.

Wiese made 40 from 31 balls with three fours and one six with no other batsman getting a measure of the track that was full of dry grass and played a bit on the slow side.

Captain Rayad Emrit led the Warriors bowling with 2-24 from four overs while CPL’s leading wicket taker, Tanvir added two wickets to the 16 he had before this match. One of his two scalps included the first wicket of the innings when he had Ahmed Shehzad caught at first slip

Emrit employed seven bowlers in all with Adam Zampa, Steven Jacobs and Barnwell all picking up one

wicket while Veerasammy Permaul was guilty of bowling too shot and went wicketless for 22 from three overs.

The teams will next meet on Saturday July 30 at the same venue when the Tridents, on seven points and facing first round elimination will be looking for two points for an outside chance to get in to the play-offs but it will depend on the Tallawahs stopping the Zouks in both matches and the Patriots doing the same to the Knight Riders.

According to Head Coach of the victorious Guyana Amazon Warriors, Roger Harper now that his team has confirmed their place in the play-offs the next step is to finish in either first or second on the points table but the Warriors are taking it one game at a time.

The tournament continues this evening in Florida with defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders on eight points in third position but not exactly comfortable taking on St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots who is the only team to be eliminated so far. The first ball also at Lauderhill is at 19:00h.
