dward B Beharry and Company Limited in partnership with Habitat For Humanity handed over a house to Donna Moonsammy, a single parent mother who had lived for years in desperate circumstances at Liliendaal, on the East Coast of Demerara.

In a release the company

said Moonsammy, 56, had lived in a wooden shack at Liliendaal Public Road with her two sons, daughter and granddaughter. The house, which was in a state of disrepair, had a leaking roof and no back steps. There was no running water and poor sanitation facilities.

According to the company,

Moonsammy lived at this location for the past 27 years.

In addition to being a single parent, Moonsammy is asthmatic and also suffers from arthritis.

Her new home, compliments of the companies is located at Westminster, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

aribbean Surgery Incorporated, in collaboration with Television Guyana (TVG 28) and Guyenterprise will launch this Sunday, September 21 at 15:00h on TVG 28, the first in a series of 14 programmes called ‘Health For Life’.

The medical show, the first of its kind on television in Guyana, is produced and hosted by Dr Surendra Persaud who, every week will introduce a colleague who is a specialist in their field of medicine. The first hour of the programme deals with prevalent health conditions and concerns, which will be delivered in an easy-to-listen format. The second half-hour

takes the form of a live call-in programme where members of the public will have the opportunity to ask questions, either live on air or via email, text message or on Facebook.

Fever in children will be featured on the first programme and the doctor on call is Dr Rohan Jabour.

Other topics to be covered on the programme will be, vaccinations for children, kidney stones, lower back pain, hypertension, diabetes, fibroids, infertility, pregnancy planning, cancer screening, cardiac screening, asthma in children and benign prostate disease.

Production for this programme has been on-going for the past two months

and a quality and authoritative show is ensured as doctors working in Guyana deal with issues that affect people’s lives in Guyana.

The producers aim to reach a country-wide audience as live streaming will allow viewers of Channel RCA (Essequibo) as well as radio listeners – RGI 89.5FM to see and hear the show. Arrangements are being made to have the programmes broadcast on the local learning channel, Channel 80. ‘Health For Life’ is a programme meant to educate the public about common medical issues and conditions which they may have questions and/or concerns about.

hirty-four members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), including civilian employees, are currently undergoing HIV Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) training, which is being facilitated by the National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS).

The training commenced on Monday, September 15, and will essentially equip participants with the skills to provide VCT services to persons desirous of knowing their status, the GDF said.

National VCT Coordinator Deborah Success-Hall explained that the training is being conducted in three phases: Counselling, Practical, and Preceptorship. She noted that it was important for persons accessing the VCT

services to be prepared psychologically and in this vein, 10 days of the training have been dedicated to counselling. In this regard too, she pointed out that emphasis is being placed on ensuring that participants are equipped with skills to handle the other cross-cutting issues which may affect clients. “Sometimes, clients come with other social issues which may be affecting them, so at least we want to ensure that the counsellors and testers are equipped to deal with these issues at least at the basic level,” she noted.

She explained that at the end of this counselling phase, participants will be subjected to an evaluation for which they must achieve at least 85 per cent, which

automatically qualifies them for the Practical Aspect of the training which involves actual Testing. Thereafter, they will move to the Preceptorship phase, which will see them attached to a high volume VCT site for first- hand experience in service delivery.

NAPS Sexual Transmitted Infections (STI) Coordinator, Dr Romona Morgan and VCT Quality Officer Delon Braithwaite as well as Trevor McIntosh are also the training facilitators. This training builds on previous training that has been done in the past and will enhance the capacity of the Force’s HIV AIDS Prevention Programme.

The programme is one of the success stories of the countrywide efforts to fight HIV.

Guyana’s deforestation rate dipped in 2013 – GFC

G

uyana has completed its 4th Annual Assessment of Deforestation and Forest Degradation under the Monitoring Reporting and Verification System.

Interim results on 2013 deforestation rate indicate a decrease in the rate of deforestation from 0.079 per cent as the annual rate for 2012, to 0.068 per cent as the reported rate for 2013. Total deforestation is 12,702 hectares for 2013. The main reason for this decrease in deforestation rate is on account of a decrease in deforestation from mining activities which dropped to 11,487 hectares from the 2012 total of 13,664 hectares, a decline of 2177 hectares.

The decrease may be on account of new technology and more responsible and low-impact mining practices, the Natural Resources and the Environment Ministry said in a statement. It added

that a significant fact influencing this decline in deforestation in mining has also been the intensified monitoring activities by the natural resources sector and its agencies in working with operators in the sector.

“Forest sector deforestation continues to be at a very low level of 330 hectares and justifies the assertions that forest harvest has had, and continues to have a very low impact on deforestation. The results are being finalised at this stage and will be incorporated into the MRVS Year 4 Report which is expected to be released shortly,” the statement read.

According to the Ministry, the findings and methods of the Year 4 assessment will be open to two layers of independent assessment: the first by a team of accuracy assessors who will be working to establish the statistical accuracy, uncertainty levels and preci-

sion of the reported results, including the deforestation rate; and the second assessment will take the form of an independent third party verification, conducted by a company contracted by the Government of Norway.

The rate of deforestation over the past 23 years has remained fairly stable between the range of 0.02 per cent and 0.08 per cent, and stands to compare quite favourably with the global average deforestation rate (computed across 85 developing forested countries as report by FAO), which is recorded at 0.52 per cent.

This rate also compares very favourably with Guyana’s Reference Level as agreed under the Guyana Norway Bilateral Agreement on Forest and Climate, which is set at 0.275 per cent (computed as the mean between Guyana’s historic rate of 0.03 per cent and the global rate of 0.52 per cent).

overnment is calling on the Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Khemraj Ramjattan to retract statements made on Thursday, alleging that the ruling party intends to “buy off” Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs)to secure the defeat of a No-Confidence Motion his party brought against the administration.

In a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, on Friday evening, Presidential Adviser on Governance, Gail Teixeira said that the Government and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) were both shocked and very disturbed by the pronouncement of Ramjattan that was published by all the media entities on Friday. She, therefore, urged Trotman to cause Ramjattan to provide proof of which MPs were offered bribes and by whom, otherwise he should be made to publicly retract his “slanderous” statement.

Teixeira pointed out that failure on the part of Ramjattan to do either should result in him being taken to the Privileges Committee for besmirching and denigrating the

image and integrity of all MPs and the National Assembly as a whole.

At the AFC’s press briefing on Thursday, Ramjattan claimed: “We have gotten reliable information that the PPP’s answer to the no confidence motion is not what is said, but at least by buying off three parliamentarians at $30 million each to vote no rather than yes, and that’s the only way … and that’s the only option they have.”

The AFC Leader even went further to say “… but, we can never know, probably the price can jump higher”. Following

the public announcement of the allegations, the Office of the President (OP) immediately fired back, disassociating the administration from what it called “outrageous allegations” against the ruling Party.

The strongly-worded statement from the OP also challenged the minority parliamentary Opposition to provide whatever evidence or information it had acquired that would prove the ruling party is engaged in bribery practices and file a complaint

with the Guyana Police Force. The statement further called on the AFC, more so Ramjattan, to name the three MPs that Government is purported to be bribing.

The PPP also sent a release, lashing back at the AFC leader referring to Ramjattan’s remarks as “utter rubbish”. The Party said the publicity stunt pulled by the AFC leader was an attempt to launch a smear campaign against the PPP, as it questioned Ramjattan’s “mental stability”. It also called on the AFC to reveal the identities of those who were approached purportedly by the PPP. “From all appearances, the AFC appears to be in stiff competition with the APNU [A Partnership for National Unity] in a race to the bottom aimed at grabbing media headlines, thus the reckless statements and challenges emanating within recent times from both parties,” the Party noted. It said, too, that such political mischief and posturing will not get the AFC anywhere, as it reminded the AFC of its rich history that is replete with stories of struggles for freedom, the rights of all Guyanese, and democracy.

“Political turf wars” In her letter to the Speaker, Teixeira opined that the pronouncements by Ramjattan should not be solely treated in the realm of “political turf wars” between the political parties. She noted that while both Government and the PPP are capable of handling such fallacies peddled against them, these accusations bring all MPs in Guyana into disrepute.

The Government’s Chief Whip continued that in doing so, the AFC is also damaging the image and integrity of the entire Guyanese Legislature, including him.

“Clearly the image portrayed in this world of rapid communications is that Guyana’s MPs are “corrupt and buyable”, an image now created in Guyana and globally which we can never erase. It appears that in Mr Ramjattan’s blind haste to besmirch the Government and the PPP, he broadsided the entire Legislature and all

While the AFC has failed to disclose the names of the MPs who Government allegedly plans to bribe, the minority party has denied its parliamentarians are among the three. Meanwhile, APNU Leader David Granger has distanced his party from the claims that the Government was looking to buy out Opposition parliamentarians. Granger said as far as he knows, none of his party members have been approached by Government with bribes.

Improving literacy

T

he recent announcement by Education Minister Priya Manickchand that only 32 per cent of pupils at the early grades can read speaks to a literacy predicament at the primary level-one that the Education Ministry promised to address through a series of measures.

The Education Minister must be commended for being open about the severe shortcomings at primary schools, which can measurably improve with more parental and community involvement, but it perhaps points inescapably to the poor performance of teachers at that level. And undoubtedly, even though the five-year plan outlined by the Minister to address the problem, which inter alia includes remediation classes, training of teachers to deliver literacy programmes, provision of support materials, monitoring and evaluation of teachers and the enlistment of faith-based and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the drive, the goal of literacy by Grade Four seems some distance away.

In fact, some of these measures are already in place in the school system and need strengthening, but to a large extent, the gamut of actions outlined by the Minister is now entirely new to the Ministry. From the face of it, the measures listed by the Minister appear to be similar to those contained in the Basic Education Access Management Programme, which ended some years ago.

That multimillion-dollar programme sought to accomplish what the Minister is now trying to achieve. And while the recruitment of NGOs and faith-based organisations in tackling the literacy problem is commendable, it is important that the Ministry looks more inward in addressing the crisis in primary schools.

About a decade ago, when the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) was implemented, it featured three vital components to address pupils’ poor performance in literacy and numeracy. The assessment was designed in such a manner that at Grade Two, learners are schooled in the basics of phonics and reading, their deficiencies corrected in Grade Three and by Grade Four they should be able to read.

This regimen is well supported by the Interactive Radio Instruction (IRI) programme, utalising an edutainment approach to learning. Apparently, many teachers at these grades have not been following this diagnostic approach to address the deficiencies in all their charges, which most likely is the primary reason for learners being unable to read at Grade Four and the poor performance in English at the NGSA. Encouragingly, under the new five-year literacy plan, mention was made of monitoring of teachers and action against those who are negligent, but this is only part of the problem.

To achieve the goal of pupils being able to read by Grade Four would also require school managers sticking to established systems in place, notably, the use of the National Grade Two and Grade Four assessments as vital tools to detect and correct learners’ weaknesses.

If this is done, undoubtedly, by the time the students reach Grade Six they would have adequately mastered basic concepts of literacy and numeracy. Since the goal is to get pupils to read by Grade Four, it would be wise for the Ministry to introduce a reward system so as to motivate pupils to do well and encourage greater parental involvement in their children’s education.

Perhaps, the Ministry can issue certificates to pupils who pass the Grade Four Assessment, and do so in a ceremonious way to make them feel recognised for their hard work.

Ultimately, the aim should be when pupils reach Grade Six, they are well grounded to do well at the NGSA. This will stop the exportation of pupils who are literate and numerate deficient into the secondary school system, and enable better results in Mathematics and English at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

The problem of literacy and numeracy has to be addressed at the primary level, and based on the admission of the Minister; the Ministry has a difficult but achievable task ahead. It is expected that all hands would be on deck at the Ministry’s level to address this predicament.

Myths, misinformation that shape attitudes towards suicide Dear Editor, In the three months since The Caribbean Voice launched Arise, its fiveyear suicide prevention campaign, we have been appalled by the biases, prejudices, misinformation and disinformation that character attitudes towards suicide. In fact we have arrived at the distinct understanding that suicide prevention can only be effective when attitudes become more enlightened and sympathetic.

When a post was placed on a Facebook page requesting contacts to help organise the Black Bush Polder outreach, one commentator wrote, “All the names I want to give you have all committed suicide.”

And when his comment was pointed out to be in bad taste, he responded that he was not joking but trying to emphasise the magnitude of the problem.

This lack of sensitivity is perhaps the number one misguided attitude.

And based on feedback, it seems that sensitivity creeps in only when someone has been personally affected by suicide.

Please people, suicide is a national tragedy and all Guyanese ought to be sensitive to this issue.

Also we receive a lot of comments to do with God, religion and temples. Yes faith-based counsellors and individuals with deep religious convictions do be-

lieve that faith in God can help. In fact, one commentator posted, “Stop begging and send them to church to pray to God.” So yes, we are certain that some suicidal individuals might have been brought out of that mindset by faith-based counselling. But faith-based counselling does not work with all, is not available to all and faith-based leaders are not generally equipped for clinical counselling.

Besides, people who deeply believe in God still commit suicide. So while we endorse faith-based counselling as a strategy that may work for some, we believe that there must be a range of strategies and access so all can be reached.

Furthermore, a number of individuals also simply dismiss suicide as the victim’s personal choice and business and feel there is no need to get involved in suicide prevention since nothing can really be done.

Yet there is a tremendous body of literature and shared experiences that prove that something can indeed be done and that suicide is preventable.

So as we move forward, it becomes important to dispel some of the prevailing myths and misinformation about suicide. For too long suicide and factors the drive this crisis have been viewed as ‘taboo’ and not an appropriate topic to be discussed in public. That

taboo must now be laid to rest.

Myth #1: People who commit suicide want to die.

Fact: Suicide is seen as a way to end the pain.

A suicidal person does not see any other option but those who have survived attempted suicide say they never wanted to die.

Myth #2: People, who talk about killing themselves, are just looking for attention and won’t do it.

Fact: If someone is talking about suicide, regardless of how it is expressed, it must be taken seriously. That person is in pain and crying out for help. If you’re in doubt, keep talking to the person and listen carefully. Unless this is done, that person could end up carrying out the threat.

Myth #3: If people are determined to kill themselves, then nothing is going to stop them.

Fact: Various studies indicate that showing someone you care and giving that person just five minutes of your time has proven to reduce suicide attempts. A person’s urge to kill him/herself, regardless of the reason, is only temporarily. A study of those who survived the jump from the Golden Gate Bridge stated they would not have jumped if someone had just spoken or even smiled at them during their period of crisis.

Myth #4: People who commit suicide never tell

or show any signs of distress.

Fact: In various studies it was noted that up to 80 per cent of victims leave clues, either verbally or through their change in behaviours. That is why, it is important to learn about and become familiar with the warning signs.

Myth #5: Discussing suicide with someone will put the idea in his or her head.

Fact: Talking about suicide lets the person knows you care and that he/she is not alone. It gives a sense of relief and promotes a greater chance that the person will unburden himself/herself.

Myth #6: Only IndoGuyanese commit suicide.

Fact: Guyanese of all ethnic backgrounds commits suicide.

Myth #7: Only the poor commit suicide.

Fact: Suicide does not discriminate and it can affect the lives of anyone regardless of social status or financial background.

Myth #8: Telling someone to cheer up when he/ she is depressed will stop him/her from acting crazy.

Fact: Telling someone to cheer up will cause more distress because it will appear as if that person’s feelings do not matter and the person is not being taken seriously.

Nandlall chides Harmon’s double standards on AML/CFT Bill

ttorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall on Friday dismissed calls made

by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament Joseph Harmon for the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) to pressure the administration to have the languishing Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) (Amendment) Bill passed.

In an invited comment, the AG said that Harmon’s comment exposes him and his party’s true intention. “The truth, and the sad reality, is that it is not the Administration upon whom the pressure will be exerted, but on all the people of Guyana, including those who are supporters of the Opposition,” he said.

Minister Nandlall said that the refusal of APNU and the Alliance For Change (AFC) to pass a Bill that incorporates recommendations from both the CFATF and its parent body, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a clear demonstration of their disrespect to these two agencies.

Since the Bill was tabled in the Parliament in March 2013, Guyana has missed

deadline after deadline to bring the country into compliance with its international financial obligations and as such, has been blacklisted regionally. Despite being cautioned by CFATF’s Financial Adviser, Roger Hernandez, the APNU had proposed amendments to the principal Act which fall outside of those

that were recommended by the CFATF. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Harmon said that “there is no statement that the amendments we are proposing would make the law non-compliant”. However, during his visit in February earlier this year, Hernandez is on record explaining to the

members of the select committee and even to the press that the amendments put forward by the Opposition deal with previous areas of the Act that were deemed compliant.

Feeble efforts

“Mr Harmon’s belated and feeble efforts to distort and obfuscate these issues will not be taken seriously.

Mr Hernandez had explained that while CFATF cannot dictate to the National Assembly of any country how to legislate, it would be eminently sensible that the Guyanese National Assembly passes a Bill that incorporates CFATF and FATF recommendations and, therefore, one which is CFATF compliant,” Minister Nandlall said.

The AG maintained that unless CFATF and FATF’s recommendations are captured in the AML/CFT Bill, then Guyana would be deemed non-compliant and as such, will be subjected to sanctions. The Opposition’s proposed amendments which include: empowering Police and Customs officers to seize currency, which could include cheques or precious metals, in the amount of US$10,000, if they suspect that the said currency is proceeds of crime

and for the Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to be appointed by the Parliament, were transmitted to CFATF for its opinion, which it readily gave. Firstly, CFATF underlined that some of the amendments do not form part of the initial recommendations and secondly, there are aspects of the amendments which, in fact, offend certain fundamental principles, chief among which is the undermining of the independence and autonomy of the FIU. “They concluded that on both grounds those amendments would have rendered Guyana non-complaint… it must be that Mr Harmon

hopes that these facts would have been quickly forgotten.

It is the only rational basis for him to so brazenly publish, publicly, his fabricated version of the events,” the AG said. He also reminded of the fact that the Opposition even refused to pass their own version of the Bill when Government offered them the opportunity to do so, noting that it may very well be the first time in the history of Guyana’s Parliament that MPs on one side of the divide rejected their own proposals. Harmon also lamented that Opposition members in the select committee to which the Bill was referred were not informed of an impending CFATF meeting in Miami.

Minister Nandlall responded that the Opposition has persistently refused to agree for the committee to meet and as such, their expectation to receive communication involving the Government, CFATF and FATF about the impending meeting is quite fanciful. “Mr Harmon is obviously in some state of confusion.

I cannot conceive how he expects to receive communication between the Government of Guyana and CFATF and FATF. As a member of the

Select Committee, he and his colleagues used the power reposed in them to demonstrate to the people of Guyana, CFATF and FATF that they will not implement CFTAF and FATF’s recommendations, thereby exposing Guyana and the people of Guyana to international sanctions,” the AG asserted.

While the Opposition continues to dawdle on the Bill, the Government is moving ahead to implement all the non-legislative aspects of CFATF’s recommendations in an effort to stave off any further blacklisting. The Government has been calling for a meeting of the Select Committee since before the Parliament went into recess on August 10, but is yet to receive a response to date.

The Government even indicated that it was ready to meet during the recess, but the Opposition has refused.

One of the non-legislative aspects is the establishment and operationalisation of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), a process which is moving apace. Funds have already been approved and former Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant Colonel Sydney James has been appointed to head this investigative body.

Peeping Tom, you should either reveal yourself or remain silent!

Dear Editor, I have read with utter disgust the self-serving article headlined “Abuse of office”, written by a selfappointed anonymous crusader and protector of public morals Mr Peeping Tom. This however is an absurd contradiction, for how can one begin to preach about upright behaviour and moral rectitude when such a person hides behind a pen name.

How can someone point fingers at others while masking himself in a cloak of anonymity, appointing himself a public prosecutor and pronouncing on the guilt of public officers whom he feels, disclosed information pertaining to the acts of skullduggery of his paymaster.

This itself calls into question the benefits Mr Peeping Tom is receiving and are these benefits being taxed and reported under a pen name too. I call upon the Commissioner General (since this so called “masked defender of public morals”, is without a doubt accusing him of leaking information), to have this daily columnist reveal himself to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and have his Income Tax returns filed under his true identity.

Fact: People do not commit suicide on an impulse.

Those who end their lives have thought about it over and over in their mind; it’s this process that allows them to carry out the act.

Myth #10: Only cowards commit suicide.

Fact: It’s not a question or being a coward or being brave. The reality is that it is difficult to imagine the agony someone goes through before committing or attempting suicide.

Myth #11: If you go to church you will not commit suicide.

Fact: Regular church

attendance, by itself has not stopped individuals from committing suicide.

And while belief and faithbased counselling may help some it takes more than that to help others.

Myth #12: Only people who drink commit suicide.

Fact: Alcoholism or being under the influence of alcohol is not a reason for suicide, but may provide Dutch courage to the already suicidal.

In the final analysis please remember that “Suicide Prevention is Everybody’s Business” and if each of us plays a part,

Every day we are witnessing the public disclosure of the salary and benefits of both the sitting and the former Presidents in no lesser a place than the Parliament.

These are the most important persons in the country by any stretch of the imagination.

Therefore what is the big deal with putting in the pub-

lic domain the acts of deception of someone who appointed himself to defend acts of wrong doing by others? This is not a matter for the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and other service committees of the Parliament to determine.

The Guyanese public awaits the revelation of your identity and more unmasking of persons who hold themselves out to stand on high moral grounds. You need to know that the same Parliament is being financed by taxpayers, which is the same cause you Mr Peeping Tom, are attempting to subvert.

I

n a thought provoking article, “The Concept of Weaning: Definitions and Their Implications” (Journal of Human Lactation, June 1996), Ted Greiner points to research in northern Bangladesh where children who were breastfed at three to four years of age received the breast nine to 10 times a day and those who were still breastfed at four to five years of age received it seven to mine times a day.

Greiner comments, “Although the quantity of breast milk was not measured, this sucking frequency can be assumed to maintain a relatively high level of breast milk production (as indeed it does in women who re-lactate), and should hardly be termed ‘token breastfeeding.’” We seem to know so little about what is normal nursing behaviour for the four- to fiveyear-old that this cross-cultural information can be very reassuring to a mother who is wondering about her child’s nursing behaviour.

In her book Mothering Your Nursing Toddler, Norma Jane Bumgarner gives us this glimpse into the history of the decline in breastfeeding duration in English-speaking countries. She reports that according to a study of advice given to mothers by doctors from 1550 to 1900: “It was not until 1800 that most of the popular English writings on child care recommended weaning as

young as 12 months. Even in 1725, writers commented with disapproval on nursing four-year-olds, an indication that a significant number of eighteenth century four-yearolds were still receiving love and comfort at their mother’s breast. By 1850 most “experts” were recommending weaning by 11 months. At this time it was the nursing two-year-olds seen by child-care advisors who drew official frowns. It is enlightening how closely these changes in recommended patterns of child care parallel other changes in family life that accompanied the Industrial Revolution in England and the United States.”

Bumgarner reports these other interesting pieces of history:

possible, often seven or even nine years sometimes. In Tsinghai, China, mothers observed in 1956 were still nursing for several years, five years not being unusual, or until another child was born. In Inner Mongolia in 1951, children nursed two or three years, nor was it rare that a six- or sevenyear-old would want to nurse for a bit of reassurance.”

Kathleen Huggins and Linda Ziedrich, in The Nursing Mother’s Guide to Weaning, give an interesting glimpse into weaning practices of other cultures. In one account a Sioux mother “came to school at recess to nurse her eightyear-old boy because he had a cold.” And they comment “this wasn’t a very remarkable occurrence in her culture; the

average nursing period among the Sioux, traditionally, was three to five years.”

Within Western cultures there have been significant regional differences in breastfeeding practices.

While “experts” in England were recommending weaning as early as 12 months in 1800, Gabrielle Palmer notes in her book, The Politics of Breastfeeding, that “in East Lincolnshire women were reported to suckle their children until they were seven or eight years old even in the 1820s.”

Though it is clear that the majority of women worldwide and throughout history have nursed their children into toddlerhood and beyond, women who choose to do so today may face an uninformed and frequently critical audience.

Therefore many choose to make sure that they limit who sees and who knows, taking greater care as the child grows older. Given this climate it is a highly select group of mothers who nurse their children beyond toddlerhood.

Social pressures Because of the social criticism and resulting secrecy, it is hard to get an accurate picture of just how many children are continuing to nurse this long. Often the last nursings to be given up occur in bed and so are hidden from all but those who share the bedroom.

It must be difficult even for the anthropologist in a native tribal village to get an accurate picture of when nursing has completely ended. (naturalchild.org)

5. “A breastfeeding baby needs extra water in hot weather.” Not true!

Breast milk contains all the water a baby needs.

6. “Breastfeeding babies need extra vitamin D.” Not true! Everyone needs vitamin D. Formula has it added at the factory.

But the baby is born with a liver full of vitamin D, and breast milk does have some vitamin D. Outside exposure allows the baby to get the rest of his vitamin D requirements from ultraviolet light even in winter. The baby does not need a lot of outside exposure and does not need outside exposure every day.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and is stored in the body. In some circumstances (for example, if the mother herself was vitamin D deficient during the pregnancy) it may be prudent to supplement the baby with vitamin D. Exposing the baby to sunlight through a closed window does not work to get the baby more vitamin D. 7. “A mother should wash her nipples each time before feeding the baby.” Not true! Formula feeding requires careful attention to cleanliness because formula not only does not protect the baby against infection, but also is actually a good breeding ground for bacteria and can also be easily contaminated. On the other hand, breast milk protects the baby against infection. Washing nipples before

each feeding makes breastfeeding unnecessarily complicated and washes away protective oils from the nipple.

8. “Pumping is a good way of knowing how much milk the mother has.” Not true! How much milk can be pumped depends on many factors, including the mother’s stress level. The baby who breastfeeds well can get much more milk than his mother can pump. Pumping only tells you how much you can pump.

9. “Breast milk does not contain enough iron for the baby’s needs.” Not true! Breast milk contains just enough iron for the baby’s needs. If the baby is full term he will get enough iron from breast milk to last him at least the first six months.

Formulas contain too much iron, but this quantity may be necessary to ensure the baby absorbs enough to prevent iron deficiency. The iron in formula is poorly absorbed, and the baby poops out most of it. Generally, there is no need to add other foods to breast milk before about six months of age.

10. “It is easier to bottle feed than to breastfeed.” Not true! Or, this should not be true. However, breastfeeding can be made difficult because women often do not receive the help they should to get started properly. A poor start can indeed make breastfeeding difficult. But a poor start can also be overcome.

Breastfeeding is often more difficult at first, due to a poor start, but usually becomes easier later.

11. “Breastfeeding ties the mother down.” Not true! But it depends how you look at it. A baby can be breastfed anywhere, anytime, and thus breastfeeding is liberating for the mother.

No need to drag around bottles or formula.

No need to worry about where to warm up the milk.

No need to worry about sterility. No need to worry about how your baby is, because he is with you.

12. “There is no way to know how much breastmilk the baby is getting.”

Not true! There is no easy way to measure how much the baby is getting, but this does not mean that you cannot know if the baby is getting enough.

The best way to know is that the baby actually drinks at the breast for several minutes at each feeding (open mouth wide –pause close mouth type of suck).

Granger: MP buy-out Hundreds attend education rally claim is a 'lie'

eader of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) David Granger has dismissed allegations being peddled by the Alliance For Change (AFC) that the ruling Peoples Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration is attempting to buy out opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) ahead of the debate on the no confidence motion.

Leader of the AFC, Khemraj Ramjattan on Thursday announced that they had received information that the PPP/C was attempting to buy-out parliamentarians with a $30M bribe, an assertion which the PPP/C has already rejected.

According to Ramjattan, none of his seven MP’s has been approached by the PPP/C which means that the three parliamentarians that were supposedly approached had to have come from the APNU. But Granger on Friday said that he is sure

that none of APNU’s MP’s has been approached with such an offer, a statement which begs to question the merits of the AFC’s allegations.

Granger said “I am confident they are not APNU MP’s” Further he noted that prior to the revelation made by the AFC he was not aware of such an undertaking by the administration, hinting that it might have been made up.

He said “I don’t know that there’s an offer at all. I don’t know who made it up, I don’t know who made it up.”

The Government late, Thursday afternoon challenged the AFC to produce evidence to support its allegations that the PPP/C was attempting to “buyout” Opposition parliamentarians. The Office of the President in a statement had rejected the accusations made by the minority party.

It expressed “utter shock” at what it called the latest public revelation by the AFC Leader as it noted that the startling disclosure follows

a long line of reckless and baseless utterances emanating from the AFC. “Office of the President rejects this outrageous allegation, and challenges Mr Ramjattan to forthwith disclose, publicly, the names of these three parliamentarians to which he makes reference and to further make a full and frank public disclosure of all or any information which he claims he has received in relation to this matter,” the statement said.

It also called on the AFC to lodge a report with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) forthwith, furnishing the Police with the information received with a request to immediately commence an investigation since the allegations border on criminality. “Office of the President holds firmly to the view that the AFC has become desperate and is obviously prepared to adopt strange postures and make wild and irresponsible statements in their quest to exaggerate their importance and standing,” the release noted.

Webster warns parents about online risks to children

gainst the background of rampant child begging, exploitation, and sexual abuse, the Human Services Ministry unveiled its annual Child Protection Week programme Friday under the theme: “Partnering with Communities to Prevent Child Abuse”.

Human Services Minister Jenifer Webster, in a message to mark the occasion, said this year’s theme is not an adage coined for the week, but a principle “by which we should be bound in our daily lives”.

The Minister noted that as a society, “we are obligated to prevent and eliminate child abuse, not only because it is violence, neglect and harm against defenceless humans, but because it is a destructive force of our future”, Webster said it is unacceptable for society to countenance the destruction of self-esteem, psyche, limbs and bodies, opportunities and worth of the children of Guyana. “Let us treat them with love, respect and affection, and desist from harmful practices which do have a negative impact upon their lives,”

The implementation of the TELL Campaign teaches our children to recognise abuse, especially sexual abuse and encourages them to report it to an adult. This campaign has had tremendous success, as we have used an animated cartoon, as a user-friendly approach for Guyana’s children to recognise and understand the importance of this issue and for the dissemination of this material, through awareness sessions in a number of schools in the hinterland. he National Park played host to hundreds of students from a variety of schools in and out of Georgetown, as well as trainee teachers, after they marched around the city in observance of Education Month, whose 2014 theme is “Literate by Grade 4 through consistent home, school and community involvement”.

The Education Rally is a traditional march that is undertaken every year by the Education Ministry to observe Education Month in September. The march began at the Parade Ground on Middle Street. There, one could have seen an array of colours as there were students from Christ Church Secondary School, St Roses High, Lodge Secondary, Brickdam Secondary, and even the Cyril Potter College of Education, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown.

The march proceeded along Camp Street into Lamaha Street then into Albert Street and culminated at the National Park. The students were quite happy to see Education Minister Priya Manickchand who marched with the Ministry of Education as well. She spoke to a few students, showing particular attention to the North Georgetown crew in their new uniforms.

This, along with the majority in attendance being youths, added to quite an electrifying atmosphere for the rally.

At the Park, the students were greeted with music from the Lodge Secondary School Steel Pan, headed by Music Teacher Sindo Austin, which added to the aura of excitement that the youths expressed.

Michael Jordan on $1M bail for causing death charge

orty-threeyear-old Michael Jordan was on Friday placed on $1 million bail on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving after objections to bail were overruled by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

It is alleged that on September 14, at Mabura Public Road, Upper Demerara, Region 10, Jordan drove motor vehicle GMM 7330 in a manner dangerous to the public causing the death of Raymond Khan and Jean Williams. Sixty-four-yearold Khan and 63-year-old Williams were siblings visiting Guyana on holiday when the speeding pickup that they were travelling in suffered a “blowout” and overturned around 08.15h. were pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

In the courtroom, Magistrate Azore enquired whether the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was being applied from Police Prosecutor Sean Blackman, who said it would not be applied, so the matter remained indictable.

by Attorney Leslyn Charles, who told the court that her client has a stable place of abode at Lot 21 Queens Hall, East Coast Demerara and is the sole breadwinner of his family which consists of his wife, Subrina Khan, and his two children aged 10 and 6.

The defence counsel pointed out that the deceased were related to Jordan and he was injured as well during the accident and was hospitalised for four days.

Attorney Charles highlighted that while Jordan was receiving medical treatment, he was not under any Police supervision. She posited that if her client wanted to escape, he would have escaped, and this proved that he was not a flight risk. She further noted that Jordan has no prior convictions, as she applied for reasonable bail.

However, Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail, citing the prevalence and seriousness of the offence and the fact that two lives were lost during the accident.

Jordan was subsequently granted bail, but has to lodge his travel documents and report to the Providence Police Station. The case will next be heard on October 7 in the Courtroom of Magistrate Dylon Bess.

Police seek DPP’s advice on Matthews Ridge murder

hree men remain in custody for questioning in relation to the murder of 32-year-old Samantha Ashby, who was found in a clump of bushes a stone throw away from her Pakera residence, Matthews Ridge, North West District earlier this week.

Investigators have approached the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge the trio. Guyana Times understands that the Police at Matthews Ridge and its environs are making every effort to apprehend a fourth person, but up to late Friday evening, their efforts proved futile. The three men are presently in Georgetown, but investigators are cognisant of the legal deten-

tion period which will expire shortly.

A senior rank told the Guyana Times that once the DPP advises that charges are to be instituted against the men, they will make their court appearance early Monday morning. If the file requires additional information, the Police will have no alternative, but to either approach the High Court for an extension of the legal detention period or they will have to be released and asked to return to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.

At that point in time, Ashby did not have all of the cash, but was overheard telling him that she will get the money before the week was over. The following night, she reportedly told a friend that she was going to get cigarettes but never returned.

f anyone had any doubt about it, the PPP says Ramjattan is not only threatened by Chikungunya, but by dementia. They were trying to explain the “verbal diarrhoea” emanating from Ramjattan’s frothing mouth at his latest press conference?? Maybe it was because he’d just knocked off his daily “large”? His old friends obviously thought not!

Let’s start with his claim that the PPP’s trying to bribe three Opposition members $30 million each not to vote for their “no-confidence” motion. These fellas would’ve then be “crossing the floor”, in not toeing the party line on the vote. Now if Ramjattan wasn’t just plain loco, the PPP must’ve reasoned, how else would he’ve forgotten he and Trotman had precipitated the “recall legislation” against “crossing the floor”. When they jumped ship from the PPP and the PNC??

But maybe it’s not a case of madness but a case of a guilty conscience?? People have always speculated as to who bribed Ramjattan and Trotman to cross the floor. We mightn’t know what goes on behind closed (embassy) doors – but we can connect the dots from what followed, no? Did Dick Morris – pollster to the US Democratic Party – with US million-dollar fees, parachute in because he heard about these “underdogs” in the Amazon juggles??

So is this where the $30 million figure came from??

Is this how much Ramjattan and Trotman each pocketed for doing the dirty?? Was it on top of what they collected for “carrying news”?? Now this isn’t the first time the AFC floor-crossers have accused the PPP of trying to buy their members’ vote. Remember back in early 2012 when Trotman lashed out at some of his (unnamed as of now) party MPs for being susceptible to the PPP. He had a nasty exchange with his predecessor Ramkarran – about the PPP trying through “bribery” to ensure the budget was passed.

Reminded about the “recall legislation”, which he and Ramjattan had not surprisingly opposed vehemently, Trotman said he and Ramjattan would do what they had to do. Well, we all know that no one crossed the floor back in 2012. So why cry “wolf!” at this time?? Why don’t they “do what they gotta do” once again??

They won’t because there’ve been no offers of bribes.

From the PPP or anyone else. It’s just Ramjattan trying to muddy the waters that’ll drown he and his party when the “no-confidence” motion comes up for the vote!!

Bribed to form their party, Ramjattan and Trotman were advised by the Big Dick from the US that they had to show they were different from both the PPP and the PNC. And how were they to do that?? “Simple,” said Big Dick. “Tell the people that with you guys being African and Indian (never mind Trotman was Mulatto – Dick followed the “one drop of black blood” rule) you represent all the people of Guyana.”

So the Two Stooges reminded Big Dick that the PPP and PNC had both gone that route with the Indian and African leaders bit. And the Big Dick pondered a while and then announced. “Hey!! Tell the people that the two of you will rotate being the Presidential Candidate. And we’ll start off with you Trotman now in 2006.”

And so it was in 2011, Ramjattan reminded Trotman (very forcefully, thank you) that it was the turn of the “Indian”. Namely he, Ramjattan.

So this Eyewitness finds it more than passing strange that Ramjattan now says it’s “OK to abandon principles” to have his Indian brother Nagamootoo be the candidate this go-round. Marginalisation??

Granger’s ultimatum

APNU mobilising int’l support for street action D espite an impending no-confidence vote, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is going ahead with its campaign to push for Local Government Elections to be held and has begun to engage the international community.

This is according to APNU Leader David Granger, who was at the time speaking at his party’s weekly press conference on Friday, his party has begun to mobilise support from the Union of South American States (UNASUR) and the Western Hemisphere in advocacy of local democracy in Guyana.

Only recently, Granger had issued President Donald Ramotar with a September 15 ultimatum to set a date for Local Government polls to be held. In his letter to the President, Granger had promised local and international action should the ultimatum be ignored, which has since come to pass.

“We are alerting the entire international community, not just diplomats here, the entire international community, UNASAUR, United Nations, and Organisation of American States, to call on (President) Ramotar. There is no way we are going to sit on our hands and allow this administration to postpone Local Government Elections for another year,” said Granger during the press conference.

Protests

He said that while there will be street protests, a protest does not necessarily mean that persons will take to the streets. The Opposition Leader pointed out that protest action by the APNU begun since March 1 this year. On that date, a joint statement was issued by several sections of society, including the diplomatic corps and the Private Sector Commission (PSC) calling on the Government to set a date for Local Government polls.

Protests organised by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and APNU have a history of becoming violent, and when asked whether measures were put in place to prevent such an occurrence, the Opposition Leader said appeals have been made for the protests to remain peaceful and lawful.

“Nobody can be completely sure, but we have appealed to the general public to ensure that their protests are peaceful, and they are carried out in ac-

cordance with the law and that they are orderly.

The people are angry; the neighbourhoods, the towns, the councils are angry and they want to have Local Government Elections without further delay.

Everybody wants Local Government Elections,” Granger remarked.

According to Granger, the inability of the administration to set a date for Local Government Elections is the biggest stain on the Presidency of Donald Ramotar.

“This is the single most serious constitutional violation by President Donald Ramotar, since he was elected to office. His refusal to abide by the constitutional requirements to have democratic Local Government Elections… it is the single most serious breach and the entire Western Hemisphere must hold him to account and demand Local Government Elections,” said Granger.

He also contended that the intensified calls for Local Government Elections are not an attempt to gain political mileage. He said that the majority of the APNU supporters were rooting For Local Government polls.

Campaign

This intensified campaign by the APNU for Local Government Elections to be held has raised questions about the party’s preparedness for a General Election.

The possibility exists that a General Election may be held in early2015 should the no-confidence motion tabled by the Alliance For Change (AFC) successfully make its way through the National Assembly.

When asked whether the APNU was today prepared for General Elections, Granger responded: “The APNU is getting ready for Local Government Elections and we will hold this Government to account that the people of this country are calling for Local Government Elections.”

The question was repeatedly asked and garnered the same response from the Opposition Leader. He was also asked whether the APNU was in the mood for General Elections to which he replied: “APNU is calling on President Ramotar to behave in a constitutional manner and give the people what they want: they want Local Government Elections.”

At one point, he was asked point blank whether the APNU was prepared for a General Election and responded: “We are prepared for Local Government Elections.”

Under the theme: “Traditional embodiment for Amerindian delegation”, both teachers and students were dressed in Amerindian attire, as they engaged in a number of activities pertaining to the Amerindian culture. Speaking to this publication was the headteacher of the school, Elly Peterkin, who highlighted the objective of the initiative.

Peterkin noted that although this was the first time they were hosting the event, she planned to make it an annual affair so that every child who attends the school will have firsthand knowledge of the Amerindian culture and their way of life.

Also speaking to this publication was Senior Teacher Sandra Sandy, who told Guyana Times that she was delighted to be part of the initiative. She noted that they have been teaching the students about the Amerindian culture for the past week and used the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt. Two students, Makesha Denny and Jamilla Lorde, shared with this publication some of what they learnt over the past few days, highlighting that Amerindians are also known as Indigenous People and comprise nine tribes across Guyana. Trio before court on assault, damage to property charges

Demerara; Beverly Barrow, 45, of Lot 2001 Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara and Jerome Gitts, 45, of Lot 129 D’Urban Backlands, Greater Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Fabayo Azore to answer to the charges.

The incident occurred on September 7 at D’Urban Backlands. It was alleged that Barrow unlawfully damaged one jersey valued $12,000 which belonged to Gitts.

It was further alleged that she also unlawfully assaulted Gitts. Barrow pleaded not guilty to both charges read to her.

Gitts was charged for allegedly unlawfully assaulting Barrow to which he pleaded not guilty, while the allegation against Smith was that she unlawfully and maliciously damaged a jersey valued $5000, which belonged to Barrow, and unlawfully assaulted the said individual. She denied the charges read to her.

No facts were presented in court on this matter. While Smith and Gitts were unrepresented, Barrow was represented by Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who requested reasonable bail for his client.

The trio were granted $5000 bail on each charge after Police Prosecutor Sean Blackman had no objections. They are to report to Court Six before Magistrate Dylon Bess for their next court appearance.

Man accused of shooting nephew to be charged soon

he West Demerara logger who allegedly shot his nephew is expected to be charged and placed before the courts early next week.

Jang Bahadur Ramdhanny, a logger of Vive La Force, West Bank Demerara (WBD), is reported to have shot his nephew, 31-year-old Vickram Ramdhanny, a miner of Lot 96 Alliance Canal Number Two Polder, WBD. The incident occurred on Monday last at the backdam in Canal Number Two. The day following the incident, Bahadur turned himself in to Police at the Wales Police Station accompanied by his attorney. He was kept in custody assisting with investigations.

Guyana Times was made to understand that a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, seeking advice on the matter. That file was returned to the investigating ranks on late Friday evening; as such,

the Police were unable to take the man to court.

However, by that day, the constitutional 72-hour detention period had expired and the suspect was placed on station bail. He will be making his court appearance as early as Monday when he will likely be charged with attempt to commit murder.

Speaking to this newspaper, the mother of the injured man vented her frustration and anger at the fact that his uncle had been released. She also expressed fear of him returning to finish what he had set out to do initially.

“By the time the Police ready for him, he could done come and finish what he start,” she stated.

Hope Canal 85% complete Maternal death probe findings with – Dr Ramsammy expert committee – GPHC refutes claims of shortage of anaesthetic

ealth Minister, Dr Bheri Ramsaran on Friday disclosed that while he was not privileged to peruse the preliminary findings of the circumstances surrounding the death of Evita Singh and her unborn child, they are being examined by an expert committee.

He explained that the committee is expected to make recommendations for the effective running of the Georgetown Public Hospital as well as disciplinary action. As of now, he added that the hospital was instructed to look into several issues pertaining to administration. He recalled that one of the deficiencies of the hospital was a non-functioning theatre which he has instructed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital, Michael Khan to address with some urgency.

Another concern, he noted, was the availability of anaesthetic which was brought to the fore following the death of the young woman. Nevertheless, the

Minister said that the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Shamdeo Persaud was tasked with setting up the committee to look into the report and those findings will be made public shortly. He noted that the committee is working with a deadline which should expire some time soon.

Ramsaran also noted that he was yet to see a copy of the report on the post-mortem examination, which was performed by Dr Nehaul Singh. However, the Minister was sure that the report was made available to the expert committee in helping them to make their recommendation and to establish who was responsible for the two deaths.

Erroneous However, the CEO of the hospital told the Guyana Times that at no point in time were there any deficiencies with the operation of the theatre, saying that the allegation is erroneous. He also refuted claims that there were issues with respect to anaesthetic and noted his dismay at such reports and allegations that are circulating.

Singh, 34, of Lot 13 Lathan Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, died after spending close to a week in the medical institution where she was admitted after experiencing complications in her pregnancy.

Upon Singh’s admittance to the medical facility, she was placed in the maternity ward where she was treated for high temperature, which was brought under control by Tuesday, September 2.

A few days after her ad-

mittance, the nurses reportedly induced labour via the use of Cytotec. It was reported that about six of the tablets were inserted into the expectant mother over a period of two days. They later claimed that Singh was not responding to the tablets and that there was no movement from the foetus. This led to the woman bleeding profusely, and subsequently suffering tremendous pains, Chandra Ramjit, the dead woman’s mother recalled. The pains were followed by strong contractions, and it was at this time it was understood that they had to perform a Caesarean Section (C-Section).

Singh was taken to the labour room where the nurses attempted to deliver the child, but in the process, the bleeding became excessive. Eventually, a decision was taken to perform the C-Section, but by the time it was done, the baby was already dead.

During labour, Singh lost a significant amount of blood and her heart rate had declined. She lost and never regained consciousness. The doctors reportedly told the family that Singh’s body was also rejecting the blood transfusion she had been given.

A post-mortem examination performed on the body of Singh revealed that the woman bled to death due to a ruptured uterus. The relatives are holding out that if doctors had performed a C-Section on the woman from the inception, her life and her baby’s could have been saved; hence, legal action against the hospital is forthcoming. Two homeless after Middle Road fire

A

woman and a man are now homeless after fire gutted their Middle Road, La Penitence home late Friday night.

Divisional Operations Officer of the Guyana Fire Service, Compton Sparman, said they received a call at around 20:53h, indicating that a house was ablaze in the La Penitence area. According to him, a team of fire-fighters was immediately dispatched to the area; however, upon their arrival, the “house was well alight”.

The Fire Service was successful in containing the fire to only that building. “It was a two-storey wooden building, but, from all indications, the house was well-aged,” he told reporters.

When questioned about the cause of the fire, Sparman said it was too early to determine this.

Meanwhile, investigators pressed for answers from one of the occupants of the house, but this proved very difficult, because the elderly woman is said to have a men-

tal condition. The woman, who gave not one but several contradictory accounts of the events leading up to and during the fire, identified herself as Annie Burnham. According to her, she was living at the Lot 168 Middle Road, La Penitence residence with a man whose name was given as George. Though neighbours confirmed that the woman was living at the premises with another individual, he was nowhere to be found. Investigations are ongoing.

The Hope Canal Conservancy Project is in its last stage of construction

losing in on a delay period of over two years, the Hope Canal Conservancy Project is in its last stage of construction, with approximately 85 per cent of the work completed.

This is according to Agriculture Minister, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, who made the disclosure during an interview with the Guyana Times. He pointed out that the Head Regulator of the sluice has been completed, enabling water to be released from the conservancy into the channel.

He noted that the bridge and the channel were also completed. According to the Agriculture Minister, while the channel is finished, there are still some parts that are not completely dug out, since the channel is being used by residents of the two neighbouring villages as a thoroughfare. “We left

There was talk previously of Government’s intention to build a walk bridge over the channel to connect Hope New Scheme to Douch Four/Anns Grove. However, Government will have to finance the construction of the bridge.

Additionally, Dr Ramsammy pointed out that the only problem they are facing now is with the Courtney Benn Contracting Service regarding the slow pace of the completion of the outer sluice. However, he clarified that the problems

However, the Agriculture Minister has denied this, explaining that the construction of the eight sluice gates and accompanying guides was not included in the contract signed by this company; hence, another construction company, Guyana National Industrial Company (GNIC), build them.

Following the 2005 floods, in 2008, excessive rainfall resulted in Regions Four and Five experiencing massive floods, so the

Agriculture Ministry, led by then Minister Robert Persaud, through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) commenced exploration of the Northern Relief Channel with the intention of improving the standards to withstand the intensity of hydrological disasters.

C E M C O / S R K N Engineering, in association with Mott Mc Donald, was awarded the consultancy project to the value of $64 million for a 14-month period. The Project will allow excess water from the conservancy to be drained into the canal through a threedoor sluice at that end, into the excavated channel then into the Atlantic Ocean via the eight-door, high-discharge sluice structure. The completion of the project will see the channel joining the conservancy on its northeastern embankment and then cutting across 10.3km of the coast.

The contract for the construction of the Hope Canal Project was awarded to Courtney Benn Contracting Services, DIPCON Engineering, and BK International. The first mentioned contractor was tasked with the construction of the eight-door sluice, while BK International was assigned the construction of the three-gated Head Regulator.

DIPCON was awarded the contract of the overhead bridge, while the Agriculture Ministry took the responsibility of the excavation of the 10.3 kilometre long earthen channel.

Construction began in February 2011 and was estimated to last for 18 months; however, the contractor could not meet the June 2013 deadline. Since then, there were two other deadlines last year that were not met, also as a result of the slow pace of contractors.

The last deadline in December was missed, because the contractor had completed only half of the work on the eight-door sluice component. The next deadline for completion was set for February last; however, that also was not realised, so a new date was given by the Agriculture Minister for June, which was also missed.

espite stern opposition, the decision to hike tuition fees at the University of Guyana has not deterred the spirit of Guyanese and international students from attending the institution.

Speaking with Guyana Times on Thursday, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr Jacob Opadeyi said the number of applications and registrations has not dropped, positing that it remains stable.

It was explained that approximately 6500 students have been registered for the Academic Year 2014/2015 at the Turkeyen campus. The figure represents both new and continuing students.

New students are now required to pay a tuition fee of $160,000 each in addition to $50,000 in facility fees, while continuing students will pay $130,000 along with the facility fees.

Adjustments have also been made to the fees paid by international students.

Questioned about the “glorious” plans that were touted by the administration earlier in this year, Professor Opadeyi said the University’s administration has not acquired the required funds to implement some of the initiatives. “We

are still waiting. The reason why we are waiting is, of the 6500 students that we have up to today, only 1000 have paid their fees,” he explained.

October 3 has been set as the deadline for new and continuing students to pay their tuition fees. “We are encouraging all students to pay their tuition fees before October 3, 2014,” Dr Opadeyi said.

Chancellor disclosed that students would be able to benefit from improved labo-

ratories, classrooms and free Internet access with major emphasis to be placed on Information Communication Technology (ITC). In fact, the Vice Chancellor boasted that physical changes on the campus would be visible by the second week of the new academic year with monitors erected around the campus for instructional purposes, in addition to the increased use of projectors and other technological equipment and devices.

But even as the new academic year enters its fourth week, the Turkeyen Campus appears to remain in its old state, with the exception of increased security service and the retooled Internet Resource Centre, Centre for Information Technology (CIT) which was rehabilitated by the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) Company, to the tune of $20 million.

At the Turkeyen campus, there appears to be a shortage of classrooms during the evening, a shortage of furniture and other critical amenities students require. Students continue to study side by side with animals. Earlier in the week, a student had to run to safety, to avoid being trampled by a horse while on campus.

Three held for drugs, gun, ammo at Frenchman

hree men were taken into Police custody following the discovery of an unlicensed shot gun, ammunition and narcotics in separate Police operations at Frenchman, Mabura, on Thursday.

Police in a release stated that about 10:45h on Thursday, ranks conducted a search at a house at Frenchman, where they unearthed an unlicensed 12 gauge shotgun along with three cartridges.

The two men who were in the house at the time of the search operation told the Police that they were miners and kept the gun for security reasons. When questioned by ranks about having a licence to bear arms, the men said they had none. They were

told of the offence, cautioned and arrested. They are expected to be charged shortly.

On the same day, ranks of a mobile patrol conducted a search on a man at Frenchman Road, when a quantity of seeds, leaves and stems of what ranks suspected to be marijuana were found wrapped in a plastic bag. The man was told of

their suspicion, taken to the Police station where the articles were examined and proven to be marijuana. It was weighted and amounted to 460 grams.

He was told of the offence, cautioned and arrested. He is expected to be charged for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

He refuted claims that there is a shortage of classrooms. “It is a matter of irrational use of our classrooms, most persons want their classes to be held in the afternoon because they are working, so while there are rooms available in the morning, we are not using them.”

In an effort to cushion the impact, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that the administration has taken a decision to transform the former Spicy Dish building to classrooms. According to him, the building would accommodate 350 students before the end of the year.

When asked about the University’s online programme, Dr Opadeyi said it is set to commence on September 29. “Everything is on track, we have 255 students, the tablet computers will be delivered on Monday and the students would be here for one week of orientation,” he explained.

In May, the University announced the introduction of online degree programmes, allowing for students from across the country to have easy access to tertiary education without having to step foot on campus. Students will have access to Bachelors of Sciences (BSc) programmes in the areas of Psychology and Criminology, Mathematics and Physics, Computer Sciences and Information Technology and Environmental Management and Technology. 21-year-old woman of Timehri, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is now traumatised after she was attacked while making her way home on Wednesday evening by a man who attempted to sexually assault her.

The woman who resides in close proximity of the South Dakota Circuit, Timehri is fearful that her attacker might strike again since he was reportedly released from Police custody after the 72 detention period had expired.

According to information received, the woman would normally use the same route to go home on a daily basis, thus it is believed that the young man who resides some distance away might have been stalking her. At about 17:30h on the day in question, the young woman who works with a private contractor at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was accosted by the young man and dragged into a bushy area where he attempted to undress her.

During the ordeal, the man reportedly tried to keep the woman quiet. As a result, she received injuries due to his long finger nails.

However, the woman put up a fight and managed to get his fingers out of her mouth and screamed.

Close to where the woman was dragged, an elderly man resides and heard the first scream. He reportedly walked to the road where he did not see anyone but as he was heading back into the house, the young woman screamed again.

This time, he went in the direction from where the scream emanated and found a bag and one-side footwear.

As he continued walking, he reportedly heard the young woman pleading for mercy.

By this time, the attacker saw the man and made good his escape.

The young woman was assisted and escorted home where she related her ordeal to her grandmother and cousins. She also revealed the identity of the man who is known in the community.

In a bid to arrest the man, the victim’s cousin alerted their friends in the village and a manhunt was launched.

The attacker was chased some distance but disappeared. Contacts were subsequently made with the alleged attacker’s grandmother via telephone and the situation was related to her.

In turn, she telephoned her grandson to enquire his location and it was then that she was told that he was being chased by a group of men who were armed with sticks.

The man reportedly ran from where he attempted to commit the act to his home at Cemetery Road, Timehri.

After the alarm was raised about the incident, he reportedly went to the Timehri Police Station where he refuted the allegations.

By this time, a report was already lodged with the Police, hence he was arrested. Guyana Times understands that the attacker had spent time at the New Opportunity Corp (NOC) and after his release he was implicated in several robberies in the area.

The victim’s grandmother told Guyana Times on Friday that the young woman’s throat is swollen and she had to be taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre for treatment.

Psychiatric evaluation says accused in beating death of Mario Deane can stand trial

lock-up in early August – are fit to stand trial, the Jamaica Observer was told on Thursday.

Reports from psychiatric evaluation done on both men and submitted at Thursday’s hearing into murder charges against both accused in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court said they were capable of facing trial.

The results of the evaluation were not read in open court, but a source told the Observer that the report stated that both men understood the charges against them could face proceedings.

The case was postponed to October 3 after it was heard that the file was in-

complete as the results of the post-mortem and forensic tests had not been sent to the clerk of the court.

The date for resumption was originally set for October 27, but the absence of a representative from the Independent Commission of Investigation at Thursday’s hearing resulted in the date being brought forward to give the independent body a chance to inform the court as to their progress.

A third accused, a deaf mute, has not yet been charged, and the court was told that there were difficulties in locating someone who could interpret for him.

Mexico drug suspect Aquiles Gomez killed

exican Police have found the body of Aquiles Gomez, who was thought to be one of the main leaders of the Knights Templar drug cartel.

The body was found with a bullet wound in a house in central Michoacan state.

He was believed to be the brother of Servando “La

Tuta” Gomez, head of the Knights Templars and one the country’s most-wanted drug suspects.

Several of the cartel’s top commanders have been killed recently, but La Tuta remains at large. The Knights Templar controls much of the methamphetamine and marijuana trade in western Mexico.

Prosecutors said Aquiles Gomez was one of its main operators, alongside his brothers Flavio and Luis Filipe Gomez. Police found his body on Friday at his home in Lazaro Cardenas, a port city on the Pacific coast and a drug-trafficking hotspot.

In January, vigilante groups began a series of op-

erations against the group in Michoacan state. The vigilantes took control of several towns before federal forces were deployed to the area.

The Mexican Government invited the vigilantes to join the official security forces and carry on the fight against the cartel.

Trinidad Government reassures citizens there are “no suspected or confirmed cases” of Ebola

he Trinidad and Tobago Government says there are “no suspected or confirmed cases” of the Ebola virus in the country.

“A Trinidadian man was initially seen at the Mayaro Health Centre after exhibiting prolonged symptoms of fever, pains and tiredness. The patient recently travelled from Equatorial Guinea through the Abuja Airport, Nigeria, before arriving in Trinidad on September 3.

“Accordingly, certain precautions were taken. On Wednesday, September 17, the patient was admitted to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where he was isolated and managed,”

according to a statement from the Health Ministry.

It said the unidentified “patient was screened for hepatitis, dengue haemorrhagic fever, leptospirosis and malaria.

These more common diseases need to be excluded before a diagnosis of Ebola can be made”.

The statement said that the malaria test was positive and the patient continues to receive treatment at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

The Health Ministry said it remains on “high alert” for the Ebola virus that has killed more than 2000 people mainly in West Africa. There is no known vaccine for the disease. (Excerpt from Caribbean360)

US won’t stand in way of Venezuela’s UN Security Council bid

he United States will not stand in the way of Venezuela securing a temporary seat on the UN Security Council in 2015-16 after Latin American and Caribbean states unanimously endorsed its bid, UN diplomats and US sources say.

The US stance is in sharp contrast to its position in 2006, when Washington successfully campaigned against Venezuela’s drive to join the 15-nation coun-

cil, the only United Nations body that can authorise sanctions or military force.

At that time, Venezuela failed to secure the requisite two-thirds majority of votes in the General Assembly for its bid after dozens of rounds of secret-ballot voting.

The US campaign against Venezuela came after late President Hugo Chávez compared former US President George W Bush to the devil, saying on the podium of the 2006

General Assembly in New York that he could still “smell sulfur” a day after Bush addressed member states.

Campaigns intended to block countries’ aspirations to join important UN bodies are not uncommon.

he Government of Saint Lucia is making significant progress in developing the country’s geothermal potential, encouraged by the recent receipt of grants from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Small Island Developing States Renewable Energy project (SIDS DOCK), facilitated by the World Bank.

The GEF and SIDS DOCK, through the World Bank, have approved US$2 million to contribute towards the first phase of

geothermal development assistance to the Government of Saint Lucia. These funds will provide support for surface exploration, as well as for transaction and negotiations assistance in order to help the Government of Saint Lucia reach a fair and equitable concession agreement with the geothermal developer. It will also facilitate agreements on off-take and integration of geothermal power within the domestic power market, for which LUCELEC currently has exclusivity.

Additionally, the GEF and SIDS DOCK funds will go towards developing and issuing several key policies and associated regulations, including mainstreaming the National Utility Regulatory Commission (NURC) as the primary regulatory body for electricity generation and supply in Saint Lucia. The finances from these grants will also be used to undertake environmental and social evaluations, as well as effective community engagements, in line with international standards. Texas woman convicted of the starvation and torture death of her girlfriend’s nine-yearold son a decade ago was executed Wednesday evening.

Lisa Coleman, 38, received a lethal injection about an hour after the US Supreme Court rejected a last-day appeal to spare her.

She was pronounced dead at 18:24h CDT, 12 minutes after Texas Department of Criminal officials began administering a lethal dose of pentobarbital.

Coleman was condemned for the death of Davontae Williams, whose emaciated body was found in July 2004 at the North Texas apartment Coleman shared with his mother, Marcella Williams.

Paramedics who found him dead said they were shocked to learn his age. He

weighed 36 pounds, about half that of a normal nineyear-old.

A paediatrician later would testify that he had more than 250 distinct injuries, including burns from cigarettes or cigars and scars from ligatures, and that a lack of food made him stop growing.

“There was not an inch on his body that not been bruised or scarred or injured,” said Dixie Bersano, one of Coleman’s trial prosecutors.

Coleman’s trial attorneys said the boy’s death at the apartment in Arlington was an accident. They said he may have had mental health issues that made him difficult to handle and Coleman and Williams didn’t know how to deal with him in a positive manner. (Excerpt from

France launches first Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta strikes on ISIL in Iraq summoned by ICC to hearing

rance has carried out its first air strikes in Iraq against positions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, joining a US-led operation to defeat the rebel group.

In a statement issued on Friday, French President Francois Hollande said the strike destroyed a logistics depot held by ISIL. It said that at least two Rafale fighter jets were involved in the operation in northeastern Iraq, and that the target was “entirely destroyed”.

Hollande’s office also said other operations would continue in the coming days.

On Thursday, Hollande announced that France would provide what he called “aerial support” to the Iraqi army in their fight against the ISIL,

which has taken over nearly half of the violence-ridden country.

“I decided to respond to the request of the Iraqi authorities to offer aerial support,” Hollande said. “As soon as we have identified targets, we will act... within a short time-frame.”

France has already conducted reconnaissance flights over Iraq that started on Monday, and dispatched weapons to the Kurdish forces fighting the ISIL group.

Lizard in food sends 300 school children in India to hospital

bout 300 pupils at an Indian school were rushed to a hospital after consuming Governmentprovided lunches, evoking memories of 23 children who died last year after eating food from the same welfare scheme.

A dead lizard was found in one of the seven food containers provided under India’s midday meal scheme at a Government school in southern

city of Bangalore, a teacher told Reuters. That led to a panic situation as food had already been served to several pupils. “We stopped the children from eating and rushed them to a hospital,” said Syeda Tabassum, a school teacher who was part of the group that served food to the children on Friday.

“All students are safe now,” she added, saying most had been discharged from the hos-

pital. It was not immediately clear whether the contamination originated at the school or where the food was prepared.

Police officials were not immediately available for a comment.

BK Int’l knocks ‘management’ of EBD 4-lane project

K International Managing Director Brian Tiwari has criticised the Robeson Bennled Public Works Ministry for what he described as poor management and supervision of the East Bank Demerara Four-Lane Highway Project.

In a statement released on Friday, Tiwari said: “The problem with this East Bank Expansion Project is that the Ministry of Public Works is not doing a good job of management and supervision, and as a result, the work is constantly being extended by delay after delay.” Tiwari added that “… at this rate, the project may extend to 2015 or beyond. As a company, we continue to lose money on equipment and labour stationed on the East Bank every time there is a delay.”

Guyana Times had reported earlier this year that despite efforts to have

the East Bank Four-Lane Extension Project completed by the end of this year, the project has now been set to be fully completed in the first quarter of next year.

Project delays have become a disgusting and frustrating phenomenon in Guyana; however, according to the Works Ministry’s Roads and Bridges Department Manager, Ron Rahaman, two of the lots will be completed by this year, but the other will not be finished until the first quarter of 2015.

In an interview with this publication in August, Rahaman explained that work in Lot One cannot be completed by yearend as was initially projected. He disclosed that Lot One, awarded to Dipcon Engineering, is only 40 per cent completed. Works on Lots Two and Three are 64 and 40 per cent completed respectively.

The Engineer noted that Lots Two and Three, with the exception of Diamond High Bridge, are scheduled to be completed by December. The High Bridge, he stated, will not be completed as work has recently begun. Currently, the contractors are working on driving the piles on the western side of the bridge.

The entire bridge is expected to be completed by the first quarter of next year, along with Lot One. Rahaman went on to explain that work on the second lot, being done by GuySuCo, is progressing well with

the second two-lane section also complete. He pointed out that the split-road design was done for efficiency rather than having to fill the trench. “At that area, the trench was a bit wider than Lot One, so it would have taken a lot more back-filling and big drains, so that was the better option in terms of safety and also cost wise,” he said.

he United States Embassy here this week completed a training programme for Guyanese port security workers and sea cadets on the intricacies of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code).

The three-day class, consisting of 43 students, including 10 Maritime Administration Department

(MARAD) cadets, focused on international security regulations and helped build relationships between port employees, Guyanese Government agencies, and the US Coast Guard. This was the fifth course in a series of training programmes designed to enhance port security.

In a statement, the Embassy said the ISPS Code outlines responsibili-

ties of Governments, shipping companies, shipboard and port/facility personnel to identify security threats and take preventative measures against security incidents affecting ships or port facilities used in international trade.

igh Court Judge Franklyn Holder on Friday overruled the defence’s application for a no-case submission presented by his Attorney, Glen Hanoman on behalf of his client, Quanson John.

John, a former Police Officer, is indicted with the murder of 16-year-old Kelvin Fraser, who was killed in the vicinity of the Patentia Secondary School, West Bank Demerara. Fraser was shot dead on June 7, 2010, when Police reportedly responded to reports of drug addicts in the school compound harassing the female students.

The trial into the schoolboy’s murder began on September 8, with State Counsel Diana Kaulesar calling approximately 15 witnesses to testify against the accused. During this, the court heard witnesses testified that John claimed he accidentally shot the teenager.

In an oral statement obtained from the accused when he accompanied ranks from the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) to visit the scene, John is reported to have said: “The young man was running and I told him to “freeze” and he stopped running.

I told him to come over a drain where I was standing. He came. I was holding the gun in my left hand around the middle; the nozzle was pointing upwards. I was holding him with my right hand and he grabbed the gun and we started a struggle and the gun went off.”

No-case submission After calling her last witness, the Prosecutor closed her case earlier this week. The Defence Attorney then made a no case-submission application in the absence of the jury. Following arguments by both the prosecution and defence, Justice Holder adjourned until Friday for ruling on the application.

After overruling the no-case submission on Friday, the Judge sent the case to the 12-member jury panel. The accused was then called upon to lead his defence, which he did by electing to give an unsworn statement from the dock.

The jury then heard closing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence. The panel will then retire to the jury room where they will be left to deliberate among themselves on a verdict.

Back in June 2010, eyewitnesses claimed that Police had rolled up at the school and had held several young men who were in the compound at the time.

Fraser reportedly heard the commotion and went to inquire, but was met with chaos as the Police were chasing after students.

He decided to run also and was pursued by a policeman, who was armed with a firearm and subsequently shot him at point blank range. Reports further revealed that the 16-year-old fell into a mud drain, but was removed and placed in the back of a pick-up vehicle where he allegedly bled to death before being taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination conducted on the teenager revealed that he was shot at close range to the left side of his chest and sustained as well a severed collar bone. The cause of death was listed as shock and haemorrhage from a lacerated lung, caused by gunshot injuries. Additionally, several pellets were also recovered from his body.

hree roads at Hague on the West Coast of Demerara have been completely resurfaced under the Public Works’ Ministry miscellaneous roads programme.

An estimated GY$50.5 million was allocated to resurface the Hague access road and Jibb East and West Hague roads with asphaltic concrete. According to Denita Crandon, the Ministry’s Engineer mon-

itoring the region’s roads project – over 1000 feet of road were repaired on the respective thoroughfares.

Meanwhile, Region Three Regional Chairman Julius Faerber said he was pleased with the upgraded road network. “The roads were done in a manner that is acceptable,” he added.

For 2014, the Ministry has set aside GY$1.08 billion to facilitate road repairs countrywide.

World hunger falls, but 805 million still chronically undernourished

bout 805 million people in the world, or one in nine, suffer from hunger, according to a new United Nations (UN) report released on Tuesday.

The “State of Food Insecurity in the World (SOFI 2014)” confirmed a positive trend, which has seen the number of hungry people decline globally by more than 100 million

over the last decade and by more than 200 million since 1990-92. The report is published annually by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); and the World Food Programme (WFP).

The overall trend in hunger reduction in developing countries means that the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of halving the proportion of undernourished people by 2015 is within reach, “if appropriate and immediate efforts are stepped up”, the report said. To date, 63 developing countries have reached the MDG target, and six more are on track to reach it by 2015.

“This is proof that we can win the war against hunger and should inspire countries to move forward, with the assistance of the international community as needed,” the heads of

FAO, IFAD and WFP, José Graziano da Silva, Kanayo F Nwanze and Ertharin Cousin, wrote in their foreword to the report.

They stressed that “accelerated, substantial and sustainable hunger reduction is possible with the requisite political commitment”, and that “this has to be well-informed by sound understanding of national challenges, relevant policy options, broad participation and lessons from other experiences”.

SOFI 2014 noted how access to food has improved rapidly and significantly in countries that have experienced overall economic progress, notably in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia. Access to food has also improved in Southern Asia and Latin America, but mainly in countries with adequate safety nets and other forms of social protection including for the rural poor.

On Wednesday, September 24, the PSWG on stigma and discrimination will hold its inaugural meeting under the chairmanship of the Caribbean Network of People Living with HIV (CRN+). This working group will serve as the principal advisory group to PANCAP on issues related to the removal of stigma and discrimination and promotion of human rights in the Caribbean.

Cameron congratulates Bakewell Tennis Windies Men and Women Tournament enters P

resident of the West Indies Cricket Board, Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron sent congratulations to the West Indies men’s and women’s team on their recent outstanding performances at home.

The Windies men dominated Bangladesh 3-0 in the Dhaka Bank One-Day International Series and 2-0 in the Dhaka Bank Test Series. The series ended on Wednesday as West Indies won by 296 runs to record an historic victory in their 500th Test match.

The Windies women were equally impressive with a 4-0 series sweep over New Zealand Women in the four-match ODI Series in St Kitts. The series ended on Friday as the West Indies won a thriller by four runs.

Banks 7’s set for full day of action on Sunday

he Guyana Football Rugby Union (GFRU) is set to host their annual Banks DIH sponsored Rugby 7’s tournament set for Sunday at the National Park Rugby Field.

With teams aiming for the win they will have to overcome a strong Pepsi Sonics team who recently won the 10’s Rugby tournament.

In addition the tournament will also be serving as the bench mark to be selected to the national team which is expected to participate in the NACRA seven’s tournament slated for later this year in Mexico.

he inaugural Bakewell Junior tennis tournament, which started last weekend at the National Racquet Centre, served off with matches that will allow Guyana’s top juniors to display their talent and confirm a place in the second round.

National Junior Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan in a release said she was very happy for the opportunity through this tournament to evaluate the young players who are training in preparation for the upcoming Inter Guiana Games, which will be held in late October.

The Bakewell tournament she said provides the round format for maximum match play, but it also shows how each player copes with the variety of style played by their opponents.

The players who recently returned from the Caribbean Under-12 tournament showed tremendous improvement in their determination during matches, some of which lasted up to one hour.

She lamented the absence of top seed Afruica Gentle in the Girls Under-14 category. Matches continue at the National Racquet Centre this weekend.

In the latest matches played, the batting performance of former Guyana T20 batting star Imran Khan, who slammed 110 for Chesney against Fyrish Road, was the major standout.

His knock, which included nine 4s and five 6s, helped his team to a score of 237-7 from their 30 overs. When Fyrish Road replied, they could only muster 163-7 in the 30 overs with mediumpacer Fazir Hussain taking 4-22 for Chesney.

Elsewhere, former Guyana Under-17 batsman Jamally Odle hit 88 (4x4s, 4x6s) for Tucber Park, who made just 136 all out against Police with Guyana

Kane Williamson struck 101 to help Northern Knights crush Cape Cobras in a rain-hit game in Raipur

I

n most Twenty20 matches, the brevity of the format allows teams a chance to mount a comeback even if the scorecard makes for grim reading. This did not seem like one of those matches.

Kane Williamson showed off his increasing proficiency in the format with a maiden T20 century to lead Northern Knights to their highest score, and Trent Boult and Tim Southee underlined their customary threat with the new ball to leave Cobras on the mat. By the time the rain came down in the eighth over of the chase, the asking rate was nearing 13 and saved Cobras from what was shaping to be an hour of minimising the margin of defeat.

At the start of the year, Williamson was not seen as someone who could play Twenty20s.

Everything about him seemed oldschool, from the manner in which he batted - lacking the glamorous mega hits the fans and the format loves - to the way in which he celebrated his centuries - with a mild wave of the bat. He hadn't played a single game in the format in all of 2013.

In 2014, though, he has been immense in Twenty20s, averaging over 40, striking at 137, and almost doubling his aggregate in the format.

In Raipur, he showed how versatile his game is. His first 15 runs all came behind the wicket as he used the pace of the bowlers. He picked off four successive twos in the fourth over, nudging the ball in the

gaps and running hard to signal a shift in momentum after a tight start from Cobras bowlers.

There had been plenty of close calls for both him and opening partner Anton Devcich early on: in the first over itself, there was a mix-up and Williamson was nearly run-out; in the second, there was an unintentional four for him to third man as he was late in leaving the ball; in the third, Devcich just beat the throw from point; in the fourth, a Williamson top edge flew for six over fine leg; in the fifth, Devcich was reprieved at short fine leg by Justin Kemp, who hurt his hand attempting a low catch.

Williamson and

Devcich capitalised on that fortune to build a 140run stand at more than 10 an over. Williamson was superb at placing the ball behind the stumps, and used the inside-out chip to good effect, while Devcich unveiled a series of sweeps and reverse-sweeps. The acceleration came in the middle of the innings, with 74 runs arriving in a five-over spell - there was also a 37-ball sequence in which there was only one dot delivery. The next scoreless ball was in the 14th over when Devcich was run out.

Daniel Flynn followed for a duck, but BJ Watling kept the frenetic pace up with a 20-ball cameo in which he feasted on Kemp.

Williamson was muscling the ball around by this stage, including a powerful hit to cow corner for six off Rory Kleinveldt.

Charl Langeveldt, who hasn't played a competitive game in nearly a year, delivered several yorkers to stifle the runs and for a brief while it seemed as though Williamson might struggle to reach his hundred. He got there in grand style, though, with a stunning shot that sailed over cover for six even though he was flopping over towards the leg side. That also took Knights beyond 200, to a score that looked beyond Cobras' reach.

A full-strength Cobras line-up would have had Dale Steyn, Sunil Narine and the Ram Slam's most successive bowler, Beuran Hendricks. Instead, a severely weakened Cobras were taken apart by a team that had already played three matches at the same venue. (Cricinfo)

Rajendra Chandrika acknowledges the applause on reaching his maiden double-century

Rajendra Chandrika's double century followed by early Berbice wickets have put Demerara on top after two days in round one of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Inter-County 4-day game on Friday at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground.

Berbice closed on 130-5 in reply to Demerara first innings 442-6 declared when bad light stopped play.

Anthony Bramble, who mounting a rebuilding effort with Jonathan Foo was unbeaten on 38. Foo after sharing a 76 runs fifth-wicket stand with Bramble was dismissed for 51.

Berbice trailed by a deficit of 312 runs.

Earlier, resuming at 3203 overnight, Demerara progressed to 334 before rain interrupted play for 69 minutes.

Upon resumption Rajendra Chandrika and Christopher Barnwell consolidated Demerara’s dominant position to stretch their partnership to 54 runs before Barnwell was dismissed.

Neither batsman has looked in any serious trouble, despite the second new ball was taken after three overs bowled in the session.

The right-handed Chandrika, unbeaten on 138 overnight, got to his 150 from 273 balls and by lunch, the 25-year-old progressed to 166.

However, the introduction of off-spinner Royston Crandon (1-40) changed the tone of the morning session as he removed Barnwell (25) on the stroke of lunch but they still went into the break with a commanding 371-4.

Berbice was hampered by a combination of events: its lack of consistency with the ball and Demerara’s emphasis on and execution of batting in partnerships.

Chandrika's impressive innings progressed serenely during the post lunch session, and, largely untroubled. He remained imperturbable and yet perky at the same time and brought up his double hundred with his 23 boundary from 343 deliveries.

Veerasammy Permaul, who led the team for most part of the day, juggled his bowlers as best as he could; sometimes he even resorted to giving singles to keep Chandrika from the strike.

The duo ran hard, found gaps regularly with Foo halfcentury came up from 101 balls, smashing six crashing boundaries.

However, Foo was trapped leg before wicket off the final ball of the last over off part time spinner Trevon Griffith, leaving Berbice a facing an uphill task.

peedster Anand Ramchand is gearing up for the upcoming drag racing event set for October at the South Dakota Circuits.

Ramchand in an interview on Friday at the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMRSC) revealed the approach his team will be taking when race day comes.

“Well we got four cars that we taking out back and we are going to see great performances,” Ramchand noted.

Ramchand also noted that he believes that the competition will be a tough one, “It’s going to be a real hot day for us,” Ramchand lamented.

ASK-Guyana pays courtesy Veterans' dominoes call on Sport Minister set for October 14

ubbling with enthusiasm after claiming a massive haul of 50 medals at the IKD Caribbean Karate Championships in Trinidad and Tobago recently, members of the Association Do Shotokan Karate-Guyana (ASK- G) on Friday paid a courtesy call on Sport Minister Dr Frank Anthony at his Main Street office.

Twenty-four (24) karatekas from the ASK-G YMCA Dojo came up against the best from several Caribbean countries, including hosts

Trinidad.

They competed in the team and individual Kata, Kumite, Embu and Bunkai. Of the 50 medals won, 16 were gold, 24 were silver and 10 were bronze.

Dr Anthony commended the Guyanese on their performance and wished them well in future tournaments.

He observed that karatekas have always represented the nation well and ASK- G was just continuing a proud tradition.

As a symbol of appreciation, head of ASK- G, Sensei Amir Khouri, presented a

framed photo of the karatekas with their medals to Dr Anthony. The Minister said the photo would now grace the walls of the ministry.

Khouri said the Guyanese had trained hard for the tournament and have reaped the rewards with several outstanding performances in the twin-island republic.

Khouri added that despite the amazing success of his group, there are many challenges and hurdles hampering the growth and development of the sport in Guyana,

one of which is obtaining the right kind of mats, approved by the international governing body.

He highlighted that while having the mats would certainly enhance the performance of locals, there is an exorbitant sum that is attached to acquiring such equipment and ASK- G is open to any individual or organisation who may be willing to assist in this regard.

According to Khouri, one square metre of the mat is approximately US$50, and a total of 144 is required.

Nascimento appointed GRFU Patron

T

he Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has appointed former President, Christopher “Kit” Nascimento, as Patron of the Union. Nascimento served as President for, altogether, seven years.

Kit retired on May 14, 2012, as President of the GRFU. He was capped for Guyana internationally in rugby in the 50s/60s.

Nascimento was first elected President of the GRFU in 2001. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice-president for a number of years. He served as GRFU’s President from 2001-2006. He came out of retirement on request and was returned as President of the GRFU in 2010, finally retiring in 2012.

Nascimento was also elected President of the West Indies Rugby Union (WIRU) in 2005 and served in that capacity to 2009.

The Rugby West Indies Team was established and administered under WIRU. The Sevens team played a vital part in the development of West Indies sevens rugby through its participation in the IRB Sevens World Series.

Nascimento was elected the first native West Indian President of the North American and West Indies Rugby Association (NAWIRA) in 2006/2007.

He demitted office as President of the GRFU in 2006 in order to serve as NAWIRA President, but continued as a Consultant to the Union.

In his capacity as President of NAWIRA, Kit was the first native West Indian Rugby Administrator to serve on the iRB Council in 2006/2007 when NAWIRA became a full voting member of the Council.

He also attended successive iRB General Assemblies, representing not only Guyana, but often speaking as the voice of West Indian rugby from 2001-2011. Kit was elected President of the North America and Caribbean

and Caribbean Games Rugby Sevens and the NACRA Caribbean Sevens Championships in 2010 and enjoys the distinction of winning the first Central

Rugby Association (NACRA) Board when NACRA was formed in 2009.

It was under Kit’s leadership that the GRFU established Women’s Rugby. Guyana’s National Women’s Sevens Rugby team has won the NACRA Caribbean Women’s Championships for three successive years (20082010) and the Plate in 2011.

Under Kit’s leadership, Guyana has also developed a formidable National Men’s Sevens Team, first winning the NACRA Caribbean Sevens Championships in 2006.

Guyana has since won the Sevens Championships six years in succession.

The Guyana National Sevens Team also qualified to represent the Caribbean at the iRB Sevens World Series in Las Vegas in 2010 and 2011; qualified to represent the Caribbean at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 (Nascimento served as Team Manager) and the Pan American Games in 2011. The Guyana Rugby Sevens Team was the only team sport from the Caribbean to qualify for the Pan American Games.

Guyana hosted the first Central American and Caribbean Games Rugby Championship in 2010 with Kit serving as Chairman of the Coordinating Committee.

Guyana’s National Sevens Team won both the Central American

American and Caribbean Games team Gold Medal for Guyana.

In March 2012, the Guyana National Sevens Team was selected to rep-

resent the Caribbean at the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

Guyana improved its Sevens world rating from 24 to 22.

Automaton, man, inspiration − 20 years on, Shivnarine Chanderpaul continues to be understated, underestimated. And that doesn't bother him. What's not to like?

un machine. It's one of those pervasive cricket clichés, like Ravi Shastri's tracer bullet. But for a while I thought that Shivnarine Chanderpaul might have been an actual run machine, a technically advanced automaton whose purpose was to keep West Indies competitive. The evidence was compelling.

How else could Chanderpaul be struck in the head by a Brett Lee bouncer in Jamaica in 2008, crumple to the ground in total numbness, both physical and cognitive, but then get up, bat on, and score a century? It was a Terminator-like revival, from a figure more Danny DeVito than his twin, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

How else could he bat for more than 25 hours in a Test series between dismissals, face 1050 consecutive Test deliveries without losing his wicket, as he did against India in 2002? How could he bat for more than 17 hours between dismissals in 2004, again in 2007, and more than

18 hours in 2008? It's like John Isner winning a set 7068 at Wimbledon and then doing it again, and again, and again.

The proof that finally convinced me Chanderpaul was flesh and blood was the discovery that he has pro-

duced a son. That and the fact that we're living in an age of planned obsolescence.

Machines are no longer built to last, certainly not for 20 years. Chanderpaul functions as effectively today as on his Test debut in 1994.

Yes, Shiv is a man. A qui-

et man, an inspiration to introverts like me everywhere.

He goes to work, does his thing, does it damn well, and does it over and over and over again. He is understated and underestimated. How can a man with nearly 12,000 Test runs still be viewed as an underdog? In part because his team rarely wins. But also, I suspect, because of his nature.

Twitter tells me more than I ever thought I would know about Shane Warne's relationships, Chris Gayle's eating habits, Kevin Pietersen's opinions. I couldn't care less.

In Chanderpaul I sense a kindred spirit, reserved and selfcontained. He seems not to care what anyone thinks, and I respect that. He has played Test cricket for two decades but is still a mystery. I like that.

Chanderpaul has been so good for so long that he has played with the 163rd West Indies Test cricketer, Desmond Haynes, and with the 300th, Leon Johnson.

And most in between. He knows that quicker and easier doesn't mean better.

When your name is Shivnarine Chanderpaul, you probably work that lesson out when you first learn to write your name.

There were other things Chanderpaul learnt early in life. If a stubborn batsman can be said to be married to his wicket, Chanderpaul and his are celebrating their 20th anniversary and still going strong. Mind you, they'd been going steady for 12 years prior. At 8, he was fending off concrete balls hurled by grown men in a training method his father believed would make him tough.

If it sounds harsh, it was at least effective. It also led to his unique stance, originally concocted to protect himself. Chanderpaul is now 40, but he still faces up that same way, 90 degrees askew, as if expecting the square-leg umpire to bowl to him. Glenn McGrath usually seemed unshakeable but said it was offputting to run in while the batsman stood front-on with his bat behind his shoulder.

Mesmerising

For the viewer, it's mesmerising. He's not in position, he can't be ready, oh he's punched a three through cover. He's not watching, he can't play that shot, oh he's tickled another two behind square.

Of course, he's always watching intently from behind the supermarket-bought antiglare strips under his eyes.

Always ready to nudge and nurdle.

Fittingly, he shares his name with a small stabbing weapon. A shiv can bring death by a thousand cuts.

What better description of Chanderpaul? Alas, his work often does not prove fatal to his opponents. He has played in 74 losing Tests, more than any other player in history.

Sachin Tendulkar won fewer Tests than Chanderpaul has lost. Still he chooses to bat on.

And on, and on. Most recently it was another series without losing his wicket. He batted more than 12 hours against Bangladesh without once being dismissed. He became the first 40-year-old in 20 years to score a Test century, and moved up to third on the ICC's Test batting rankings. By the ICC's reckoning, only Kumar Sangakkara and AB de Villiers are current-

ly better Test batsmen than Chanderpaul.

Where would West Indies be without him? His Test record is notable for its strength against the best opposition teams. He averages 63 against India, 52 against England, 50 against South Africa, 49 against Australia.

Chanderpaul has his critics, those who say he should bat higher than No. 5, take on more responsibility in a team that lacks potency. I say get off his back, just let Shiv do his thing.

Usually his thing is to demoralise bowlers slowly, silently. But occasionally, he can destroy them. Consider the list of the fastest Test hundreds: Viv Richards, Adam Gilchrist, Jack Gregory, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, David Warner, Chris Gayle.

Sorry, what? Shivnarine Chanderpaul? You no more expect to see his name in that company than you do Chris Tavaré's or Bill Lawry's.

Cautious

His 69-ball century against Australia in Guyana in 2003 proved that he cannot be defined solely by his seriousness. There were hooks and pulls off Lee and Jason Gillespie, no quarter given to loose balls from Stuart MacGill and Brad Hogg. And the next match it was back to normal, a cautious 21 off 92 balls. It was like seeing Lloyd Bridges turn comedian in Airplane, just to prove that he could.

But he can't do everything. Captaincy wasn't for Shiv. He led West Indies in 14 Tests but the role did not fit him. Not everyone is suited to leadership. Little wonder this little wonder was among them.

"As a captain you have more responsibilities, you have to say more things, you have to be more open, you can't be quiet, you have to try and get involved in everything," Chanderpaul once said. "At times it can make you stressed out, doing these things over and over."

I hear you, Shiv. You may get called a run machine, but I know you're just a man. The man. Keep doing your own thing, what you've been doing at 20, 30 and 40. I hope you're still doing it at 50. (Cricinfo)
