Thieves burglarise home of Christopher Ram Jr

andits in the wee hours of Wednesday morning burglarised the home of Christopher Ram Jr and carted off almost $1.2 million in household items and cash.

The men reportedly entered the Lot 18 Delhi Street, Prashad Nagar, Georgetown home by prising open a door in the upper flat of the house.

Based on information received, the 34-year-old man retired to bed at about 23:00h and when he woke at 04:00h, he found his house burglarised with several portable equipment gone.

These include a television set, a music set belonging to his father, a wrist watch, electrical and computer appliances, clothing and local and foreign currency. In addition, the bandits took away his bank cards.

Upon investigating, Ram Jr found that one was his dogs was injured by the men. After realising he was robbed, he attempted to contact the Police by dialling 911 but was cut off on several occasions.

On the last attempt, someone answered and recommended that he make a report at the closest Police Station since the burglars had left the scene.

However, Ram Jr stated that the area in which he resides has been a target of burglars and bandits, and there are few houses which have been unscathed; and as such, argued that the Police ought to be aware of the vul-

nerability of the area.

“The President has said that he would like to see fewer weapons in the hands of private citizens and that these should be left to the law enforcement agencies.

As good as this may sound, in practice, it means that citizens are left at the mercy of the bandits and an ineffective public security system,” the man stated in a release to the media.

The victim added that he is a US citizen and would have returned to Guyana to pursue a career and to live in a country he loves to call home.

“I am the Manager and CEO of a Human Resources Company Accedo and part of our efforts is to persuade members of the Diaspora to

return and work in Guyana,” he added.

Meanwhile, with his recent experiences with the lack of effort the Police Force to treat certain matters with a high degree of sensitivity, he explained that his experience has now forced him to reconsider his decision about Guyana. Only recently, the Guyana Police Force has disclosed that serious crimes are down by 19 per cent and more so, the President has stated that his Government is exploring the possibility to have guns removed from the hands of civilians.

This statement by the President came in light of recent reports that legal firearm licence holders are renting their weapons to criminal elements.

103 trafficking in children cases recorded – Minister

S

ome 103 children were trafficked for the year thus far when compared to 63 last year. This disclosure was made by Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence on Wednesday, at the launch of the ‘State of the World Population Report for 2016.’ The Minister stated that stakeholders must collaborate to end the scourge of trafficking in children. This comes on the backdrop of an international outcry against the crime which targets mostly young, vulnerable women and children.

The Social Protection Minister suggested that while there seems to be a “bleak and gloomy” picture painted over trafficking in Guyana, more has to be done to end the crime.

“We must intensify our efforts to curb this malignant ill and restore dignity and respect to our children,” she highlighted.

Compared with the cases recorded in 2015, it was disclosed that January to December figures have shown a 37 per cent increase in reported cases of trafficked children.

“In 2015, there were 65 cases of which three were male and 59 female and three unverified; [for January to October 2016]; 103 alleged victims of which six are male and 97 are female… females below the age of 18,” the Minister revealed.

She further highlighted that data reveals that the number of alleged vic-

tims for the first four years was fairly constant, whereas the 2016 figures show a “significant increase, almost doubling what pertained in 2012.”

Examining the statistics that Minister Lawrence presented, it was revealed that in 2012, there were 54 alleged child trafficking victims, which included five males and 30 females, while the remainder was of the “unverified sex”. Figures in 2013 indicated 56 victims (11 males, 52 females, three unverified), whereas 2014 stats stood at 59 alleged cases (11 males, 51 females, two unverified).

The Social Protection Minister also explained that the Labour Act, Sexual Offences Act and Trafficking in Persons Act all include measures that are aimed to prevent trafficking of children.

“Each of these Acts is geared to provide protection against perpetrators for our vulnerable groups, specifically women and children,” Lawrence stated. She added that there

will be street “gyaffs” and school talks to encourage children of their rights against being forced into such practices.

“I know you students are on Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and everything else and I am challenging you to speak out when you know something or you hear something,” stressed the Social Protection Minister.

It has been widely reported that the number of persons and children who are victims of human trafficking is difficult to monitor, which causes many cases to go underreported. The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) announced last month that over 50 per cent of Guyanese trafficked are children.

The internal body had expressed concern over the fact that Guyana’s economy is heavily reliant on its extractive and timber industries which it contended might generate violations of children’s rights.

Guyana/US bilateral relations will continue under Trump Administration – Granger

ours after stunning the world by heavily defeating his favoured rival – Democrat Hillary Clinton – in Tuesday’s presidential election, President David Granger on Wednesday extended congratulations to the new President-elect of the United States of America Donald Trump, stating that Guyana is looking forward to continued bilateral relations with the North American nation.

Commenting on Trump’s victory, which makes him the 45th US President, the Guyanese Head of State told reporters from his official residence that America is a democratic country and he believes that the presidential election was conducted in a transparent manner.

“I think there is no country in the world that is not aware over the last six months about what was taking place, even some Guyanese had to vote (in the US elections). They were fully aware of the programmes of the two major presidential candidates but it’s a democratic outcome, we respect American democracy, and on behalf of the Government of Guyana I’d like to extend congratulations to the incoming President, Donald Trump,” President Granger stated.

Going forward, the Head of State noted that Guyana will continue its cordial relations with the United States following President Trump’s inauguration in January. “I’ve already met with a senior official of the Department of State so we do not expect that there will be any significant alterations in the cordial relations we have enjoyed with the United States,” the President noted.

Moreover, President Granger said he is looking forward to collaborating with the Trump Administration, particularly in the area of security with the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, a brainchild of President Barrack Obama.

“We look forward to work with the Trump Administration because we are concerned with the security of the hemisphere and we are very confident that the American’s concerns about the security of the hemisphere will not diminished,” posited the Guyanese Leader.

The 70-year-old Trump won the US presidential election early Wednesday in a stunning victory that sent shockwaves around the world. The Republican nominee defied pre-election polling to claim swing states, winning the key battlegrounds of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.

Trump won some 26 of the 52 states while Clinton only secured wins in 18. Out of the 538 electoral votes, Trump got 290 of them and Clinton 228.

In his victory speech early Wednesday morning, Trump was gracious towards Clinton, while pledging to citizens that he will be a President for all Americans.

“Now it is time for America to bind the wounds of division, have to get together. To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. It is time. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all of Americans, and this is so important to me,” he said in his

first address after the results were announced.

Trump, a real estate billionaire and former reality TV-star, will be the first President to enter the White House with no political, diplomatic or military executive experience.

Clinton, on the other hand, in her concession speech later that day, said she offered to work with Trump on behalf of the country.

The Democratic nominee pointed out that the Constitution requires a peaceful transfer of power, as she urged Americans to be open minded and give the new President-elect a chance to lead the country.

“Last night (Tuesday), I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful President for all Americans… Donald Trump is going to be our President.

We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead,” she stated.

She also admitted how painful her defeat was, saying she is sorry to her supporters and campaign workers for not bring home a victory.

“This is not the outcome that we wanted and we worked so hard for, and I am sorry that we did not win this election,” Clinton said of her second attempt for the White House.

Meanwhile, outgoing President Barack Obama has congratulated Trump personally and told Americans during a press briefing on the lawns of the White House that they should root for Trump’s success, as he assured a “smooth transition” of powers to his successor.

“It is no secret that the President-elect and I have some pretty significant differences… We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,” he noted. Moreover, Trump has been invited to a meeting at the White House today with President Obama to discuss the transition.

Trump's victory – as we predicted

W

e repeat our editorial from September, not to gloat about our prediction but to emphasise why that prediction was correct – the effects of "American Exceptionalism" and "Nativism".

"Contrary to what most of the political pundits outside US borders thought would be the case by now, Donald Trump is still setting the agenda for the US presidential race against Hillary Clinton. With their elections less than two months away ...Trump is well on his way to become the next president of the United States – as this paper proposed back in March even before Trump secured the Republican nomination.

The force driving Trump forwards and over Clinton is he is representing some very deep fears in huge swathes of Americans who have seen the boast of "American Exceptionalism" (AE) exposed as being just a hollow boast.

Clinton, as part of the old politics, is blamed for allowing America to become "ordinary" and be subjected to all the ailments and challenges that only other nations were supposed to face – such as depending on "foreigners" to offer it credit to maintain its standard of living.

American Exceptionalism arose from three strands of thought, the first of which sprouted in the circumstances of their formation as the first nation to have become independent through a revolution. This revolution was not confined to defeating the colonial power Britain on the battlefield but spread to instituting new ideas in governance, constitutionalism, individualism and business.

Very early on, the US leaders also undertook a mission to export their vision of what the world ought to look like through doctrines such as the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 and its wars to "make the world safe for democracy" into the present. And finally, there is the firm conviction that because of their "exceptionalism", the US is superior to other nations.

After WWII, AE was challenged by the USSR in the Cold War between the two nations, but by 1989, America emerged as the lone superpower standing as the USSR disintegrated. But even then, the seeds had already been set by economic forces that would witness the emergence of other nations such as Japan, China and India that would command enough resources to become quite independent of the US hegemony.

Interestingly, the growth of those nations was facilitated

by US-based global corporations that felt impelled to seek greater profits through first licensing their technology to foreign countries with cheaper labour costs and then to actually "outsourcing" production and operations there. American manufacturing prowess atrophied and their well-paid blue-collar work force atrophied. Trump is exploiting the resentment of the millions that have been adversely affected by this move by promising he would reverse it through "macho" unilateral actions that evoke "American Exceptionalism". In trying to be more nuanced and acknowledging the limits of modern American power, Clinton is seen as "weak".

Simultaneously with the "outsourcing" of American production and services, illegal immigrants –- generally non-white – were allowed in to perform the menial jobs that the Americans would not accept at the rates offered.

At the other end of the spectrum, skilled workers – most of them also non-whites from India and China – were also encouraged in to perform high-paying jobs in the STEM areas. This created a backlash of "nativism" – that Trump has also exploited through threats of mass deportations and building a wall on the border with Mexico – against which, Clinton, as part of the old order, cannot compete.

Finally, while both Trump and Clinton have committed to "defending democracy" abroad, Trump has placed more emphasis on other countries accepting greater responsibility for defending themselves. While this may appear to be a diminution of the American Exceptional commitment to "bear any burden" to defend "democracy", Trump, much more effectively than Clinton, has struck just the right note of bellicosity towards the US traditional allies to be defended, which masks the retreat.

Trump’s victory stunned the world, but it’s Hillary who lost

Dear Editor, Nearly all the newspapers and media houses throughout the world carried reports of Donald Trump’s spectacular and stunning victory in Tuesday’s US Presidential Election, but in my view it was not really victory for Trump, but it was a stunning defeat for Hillary Clinton the Americans were and are fed-up with the corruption and wrongdoings with the lawmakers in Washington.

They wanted a change from the “hand wash hand” happenings… where big donors get favours from the lawmakers.

They wanted someone outside the administration.

Although Trump’s track record is not excellent, they

never the less prefer him than Hillary, who has been accused of gross dishonesty - washing sensitive emails, lying under oath, collecting funds from terrorist countries for the Clinton Foundation, the Benghazi fiasco, using Foundation funds for her daughter’s wedding and other wrongdoings.

Clinton was hoping to get full support from African Americans and Latinos, but she only received some support, not enough to push her over the line, although she spent more than $2 billion, I repeat two billion dollars, and received full support from outgoing President Barak Obama, the First Lady and Vice President Biden who campaigned vigorous-

ly for her, while on the other hand Trump was denied support from top Republicans Mitt Romney, John McCain, the Bushes, and many others.

Only Rudy Giuliani former Mayor of New York, Newt Gingrich former Speaker, as well as Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey showed their support.

Although it was a bitter campaign, Presidentelect Trump at his victory speech in the wee hours of Wednesday called for unity and said he was prepared to work with the Democrats to make America great again.

Clinton in her concession speech said that the defeat was painful, but also called for unity and said that she offered the President-elect

to work for a better country and outgoing President Obama, who is known to be at “war” with Trump, also called for a harmonious working relation and a smooth transition. He added that the rule of law must be maintained. He said that he will gracefully hand over the baton for the new President to continue the race for success.Most of the Guyanese/ Caribbean Americans are democrats, but I have no doubt that they will give full support to the new President, a businessman, who was not a politician before he entered the race less than two years ago.

Midwives being denied their salaries 10 months now Dear Editor, Kindly permit me a small space in your newspaper to express my frustration and that of some of my colleagues.

I am a midwife who was registered in the month of January 2016 after completing three years of training. It has now been ten approaching eleven months and we are being pushed around for our hard earned salaries. I had made several calls, reports and written letters to the relevant personnel, including the Ministry of Health, the Regional Health Officer,

the Regional Executive Officer and the Sister in charge of my location, but to no avail. There was one occasion when I contacted the Permanent Secretary’s office at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown and I was placed to talk to a woman whom I explained my plight to and in a rude response, she said “I don’t know about that, you have to wait until they are ready’’, and she hung up the phone. Are we, the midwives of this country, invading an unauthorised space that is causing us to be treated this

way? We were given up to December 2016 to pay for our licence, we are in the month of November and we are not being paid. Now, can the Ministry tell us where will we get the money to fulfil such demands and how are we going to take care of our HYGIENE and other economic responsibilities? It is very sad to know that a country that is looking to improve its’ healthcare services is still treating the healthcare workers like volunteers/beggars. It is very draconian that the relevant personnel are sitting in their

offices and watched us being treated like this, while they are enjoying the praises for our work. Is it that we have to go and stand at the Ministry of Presidency’s gate or at the Minister of Health’s door with placards bearing slogans demanding our money? Editor!

This is a simple call to the relevant authorities to let them know that there are midwives in Regions 10, nine and one to be paid what is due to them.

Schoolboy’s body M&CC announces fished out of canal amnesty on interests Property tax defaulters

he body of a Corentyne schoolboy was on Wednesday afternoon fished out of a canal at Tain Village, Corentyne, Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne).

Dead is Ronaldo Sankar of Williamsburg, Rose Hall Town. The 15-year-old attended JC Chandisingh Secondary.

Reports are that he and four friends went for a swim in a canal after school on Wednesday. According to one of Sankar’s friends, going for a swim after school was a regular practice; however, it was the first time that Sankar joined them.

The friend related that after swimming for some time, they decided to come out of the water, but Sankar was not seen.

The four boys went back into the water in search of their friend, but after some 30 minutes of searching and not finding him, they decided to go to his home and relate the incident to his family.

According to Sankar’s sister, Amanda Dihal, the boys arrived at their home about 16:00h. She said the Police were contacted and a search party went to the canal located about one mile

A search party made up of family friends went into the water in search of Sankar, who according to Dihal, could not swim and had never gone swimming with his school friends before.

After not being able to locate Sankar’s body, searchers deployed a fisherman’s net and moments later the

lifeless body was discovered.

He was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sankar, who was a Grade 11 student, was expected to sit the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams next May. He leaves to mourn his parents and a brother. (Andrew Carmichael)

n a bid to recoup outstanding property rates and taxes in the City, the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has announced a two-week amnesty on interests accumulated on property rate.

According to Public Relations Officers Debra Lewis, the amnesty will be extended to all property owners in Georgetown and would only be available for a very limited period from November 15-30, 2016. “This amnesty provides a great window of opportunity for all defaulters to settle their outstanding accounts with the Council.

Simultaneously, it allows the municipality to recover large amounts owed to the Council, for many years,” Lewis said in a release on Wednesday.

She explained that the monies outstanding are urgently needed to sustain current works in the City including drainage, road repairs, cleaning and greening of parks, gardens and open spaces, garbage collection and disposal and enforcement of compliance to our by-laws and building codes, and public health and environmental services, in all local communities.

The Council is urging all property-owners, particular-

ly those who have been defaulting on payment of their rates, to make optimum use of this limited facility and liquidate their debts at the City Treasury. According to a report by the City Treasurer, Georgetown Mayor and City

Council is owed about $22 billion in outstanding property rates, by property owners, in the City. Council said is it confident that it will be able to recover a substantial portion of that amount during this period.

Teens: Smart ways of organising your study time for maximum efforts

ertain key practices will make life easier for everyone in the family when it comes to study time and study organisation. However, some of them may require an adjustment for other members of the family.

Turn off the TV set. Make a house rule, depending on the location of the set, that when it is study time, it is “no TV” time. A television set that is on will draw youngsters like bees to honey.

What about the radio or other audio devices? Should it be on or off?

Contrary to what many specialists say, some youngsters do seem to function all right with the radio turned on to a favourite music station. (Depending on the layout of your house or apartment, maybe an investment in earphones would be worthy of consideration.)

Certain rules should be set about the family phone during study hours.

The more people in the household, the more restrictions on long and unnecessary phone calls are needed. A timer, placed next to the phone, can help to control the length of calls so that the telephone will be available if it becomes necessary to call a schoolmate to confirm an assignment or discuss particularly difficult homework.

Designate specific areas for homework and studying.

Possibilities include the child’s room or the kitchen or dining room table.

Eliminate as much distraction as possible. Since many young people will

study in their own rooms, function becomes more important than beauty. Most desks for young people really don’t have sufficient space to spread out materials. A table that allows for all necessary supplies such as pencils, pens, paper, books, and other essentials works extremely well. Consider placing a bulletin board in your child’s room. Your local hardware store sells wallboard that might not look too pretty and isn’t framed, but a 4 x 3’section is inexpensive and perfect on which to post pertinent school items. You might

want to paint or cover it with burlap to improve its appearance or let your child take on this project. Encourage the use of a small book or pad for writing down assignments so that there is no confusion about when certain assignments must be turned in to the teacher. Keeping general supplies on hand is important. Check with your child about his needs. In fact, make it his responsibility to be well supplied with paper, pencils, note pads, notebook paper, et cetera.

Regularity is a key factor in academic success. Try to organise the household so that supper is served at a standard time, and once it and family discussions are over, it’s time to crack the books. If the student doesn’t have other commitments and gets home reasonably early from school, some homework can be done before supper.

Consider your child’s developmental level when setting the amount of time for homework.

While high school students can focus for over an hour, first-graders are unlikely to last more than 15 minutes on a single task. Allow your child to take breaks, perhaps as a reward for finishing a section of the work.

Organise study and homework projects. Get a large calendar, one that allows space for jotting down things in the daily boxes. Rip it apart so that you (and the child) can sequentially mount the school months for the current semester. For example, you can tear off September, October, November, December, and January and mount them from left to right across one wall.

Have the child use a bold color writing instrument (felt tip pen) to mark exam dates in one color, reports that are coming due in a different color, et cetera. This will serve as a reminder so that things aren’t set aside until the last dangerous moment. (childdevelopmentinfo.com) TO BE CONTINUED

You may waste time instead of use it wisely. You’re also likely to have low or failing grades and are frustrated because you want to do better. Don’t lose hope; you can learn how to organize and maximize the time you study.There’s an old saying, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” In other words, if you don’t have a plan of when and how long you will study, you’re not likely to study effectively.

What can you do to plan to study? Develop a schedule that will suit you. Don’t try to use someone else’s schedule; it may not be a good fit.

Remember that schedules are a guide and are subject to change. Make revisions to the schedule until you have created something that you’re happy with. Be sure to include everything in your schedule – classes, lectures, labs and extracurricular activities. Part-time jobs if have one, family time, religious meetings if applicable and set doctor appointments would also be added to the schedule. Pay attention to the “free” time you have but don’t forget that you have to sleep.When you have free time, hopefully in one-hour blocks, use that time to study. It is also helpful if you study while you’re alert and rested. If you’re caught waiting until you’re about to go into class to study, you’re not likely to remember much.Try to find a quiet, out-of-the-way place to study. Limit distractions such as television and cellphones. You’ll also want to be comfortable (but not so comfortable you fall asleep) and have ample light.

Use the SQ3R method –

survey, question, read, recite and review. Get an overall picture of what you’re studying. Ask questions about the subject. Remember the 5 Ws and an H – who, what, when, why, where and how – to help you make sense of the material. If answering the questions helps you understand a subject better, you’re more likely to remember it. Write your questions down so you’ll be able to answer them.Read actively so you can answer the questions you’ve compiled. Pay attention to underlined or bold text while you’re reading. Don’t forget to read the tables, graphs or text under illustrations. Take notes, write legibly and keep all of your notes in one place.

Recite what you’ve read to enable you to recall what you’ve read. Rephrase the points of text and you’ll be more likely to remember.

Review what you’ve read, your questions and the im-

Gunmen invade Rohee’s home – escape with cash, jewellery

hree gunmen on Wednesday morning executed a daring robbery on the home of former Home Affairs Minister, People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Clement Rohee at his Eccles, East Bank Demerara residence.

The robbery occurred just about 12:00h after the gunmen gained entry via an open door on the lower flat of the house and tied up the two maids.

Reports are that the men ransacked the house and carted off an undisclosed sum of cash and a quantity of jewellery. After the ordeal, the bandits escaped in a waiting car. The women subsequently managed to untie themselves and raised an alarm. When Guyana Times arrived at

He related that the two maids were in the home and might have left the

The men, Rohee stated, ransacked the home and found a quantity of jewellery belonging to himself and his wife.

Meanwhile, Guyana Times understands that the car that was used in the

Reports have also surfaced that several firearms owned by the former Minister might have been taken by the bandits, but the politician refuted the claims. He explained that while the men ransacked the house, they were not successful in locating his firearms.

“I don’t know of any weapons taken from the home; in fact, I have my firearms here and when I check, it looks as if they either didn’t see it or didn’t touch it,” the former Minister stated. In addition, Rohee is of the view that the robbery was not a random one.

“It had to be something that made them come to this specific house of all the other houses in the neighbourhood,” he opined.

He added that the crime situation in the country has become intolerable.

“I was made to understand that this kind of incident is very prevalent in this Eccles area, not because this affected me, but quite a significant amount of people have come to recognise that the crime situation has become intolerable.”

The Police are reviewing the surveillance footage from the house.

Hours prior to this robbery, the home belonging to the son of well-known chartered accountant and attorney, Christopher Ram was burglarised. Almost $1.2 million in items was taken. The Police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with both incidents. (Kizzy Coleman)

Govt to probe multiple gun licences' issuance … still blames PPP for crime rate

atural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman has criticised the political Opposition for its claims that the responsibility for the spate of criminal activities rests wholly and solely with Government.

During the parliamentary sitting on November 4, Trotman posited that many of the youths who are involved in committing crimes grew up under the previous Administration.

Minister Trotman stated, “We inherited much of the lawlessness that was allowed to thrive. I don’t understand as a lawyer myself what is happening. When I first came to the Bar, a criminal with respect was an identifiable person. Now there are 14-year-olds who are killing.

They weren’t born when the [A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change] APNU/AFC Government took over!”

The Minister explained that President David Granger does not need to be lectured on security as, “He is in, and of himself, world recognised, a security expert who has been invited to give lectures, to be a professor at the Centre for Hemispheric Studies, has Mr Speaker, been consulted.”

The recent statements by the Head of State on crimes, he said, have been deliberately misinterpreted. President Granger had called for a reduction to the issuance of many private gun licences, saying that he preferred that they are in the hands of the Police and military.

Minister Trotman stressed that there are persons who carry licences for 10, 15 and 20 firearms. Those are the persons, he said, who will be targeted. “Statistics show that many of the firearms recovered are firearms that are stolen from house-

holds and people who have been given licences, and have left them carelessly and they have been lost.” He questioned, “Why do you need 16 firearm licences if you are one person? Why do you need, Mr Speaker, high-calibre assault rifles in this country? We have a military. We have a Police Force. It is our duty to protect citizens, but we will not be lectured to or allow private armies to reign in this country.” President Granger recently stated on his television programme ‘The Public Interest’ that “We would like to see fewer weapons in the hands of private citizens; it is my personal view that weapons should be used by law

enforcement agencies – the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force.”

The President stated that Government will try to detect people coming into the country with illegal firearms.

There is a plethora of measures which will be implemented and “the whole policy is aimed at getting guns off the streets, and leaving guns in the hands of the Police and the Army.” However, that statement by Granger came in for much criticism with persons arguing that there are no statistics or other evidence that is publicly available to link lawful gun ownership to the high level of gun crimes.

alvin Bailey, 38, called “Lava”, of Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden; Agricola, Greater Georgetown; and also of Campbellville, Georgetown; on Wednesday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and was remanded to prison where he is already serving a sentence

for murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on November 6, 2016, at the Camp Street Prison, in Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Dwayne King.

According to the Prosecutor, the incident occurred while the defendant is serving his sentence. He and the Virtual Complainant (VC), who is

also imprisoned, were involved in an altercation, which resulted in Bailey stabbing the man.

The case will continue on November 18, 2016.

Bailey was jailed after he was found guilty of killing 18-month-old Shaquan Nero. He chopped the toddler to the throat during an altercation with the baby’s mother, Bernadette Nero, in April 2007.

Corentyne hit-and-run

Family wants detailed investigation F

amily members of the Corentyne carpenter whose lifeless body was discovered on November 1, along the Number 70 Corentyne Highway, are calling for a thorough investigation into his death.

This follows new evidence which an alleged eyewitness has provided.

The body was discovered at about 03:45h in what appeared to be that of a hitand-run accident.

Divisional Commander Kevin Adonis has said the matter is being considered a homicide. However, following an autopsy conducted by Pathologist, Dr Nehal Singh, it was revealed that Narinedat suffered a fractured skull and spine, among other injuries.

Dr Singh’s findings revealed that the father of two was not hit while in a standing position. The pathology report indicates that all of the injuries on the body resulted from a motor accident.

Following the discovery of the body, relatives claimed that based on what they were told, Narinedat was killed at another location and placed on the road.

They pointed to a laceration to his back of his head. They claimed that Narinedat was at a party hosted by an overseas-based Guyanese and a fight broke out which led to his death.

When Guyana Times visited the scene of the accident, villagers were tight-lipped. However, one relative of the father of two

told this publication that the there is evidence to indicate that the body was placed on the road.

One street away, a muddy shirt, which is said to be that of the deceased man, was seen on the road while what appeared to be broken sticks were seen nearby.

Family members have begun to circulate information which was purportedly given by an eyewitness who has since gone into hiding, fearing for his life.

The alleged eyewitness claims that Narinedat was at a party hosted by an overseas-based Guyanese at Number 70 Village the evening before.

At about 02:00h Narinedat was reportedly asked to leave the party be-

cause of a dispute between himself and someone at the party.

Meanwhile, mother of the dead man, Bebi Shakira Aziz, at her Number 70 Village home, called for the Head of State, President David Granger and Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan to order an investigation into the incident.

She noted that Narinedat was her only child, while adding the he was married.

“He have his young wife, two-year-old and six-monthold child he left behind.”

Alleged thief remanded to prison

A

man accused of stealing multiple items was on Wednesday remanded to prison after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Jose Hopkinson, 28, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges that on November 7, 2016, at Sheriff Street, Georgetown, he stole over $300,000 worth of items from Lester Crandon.

According to the defendant, he is being wrongfully accused of the act.

However, the Prosecutor told Magistrate McLennan that the defendant was seen with the items in a car. He is also before another court on a similar charge. The case will continue on November 18.

But that's the 1% top stratum ...which traditionally were in the Republican camp. And it's why Trump didn't exactly endear himself with the Republican powersthat-be. You thought it was because of his crude and boorish behaviour? Jeez! Trump's behaviour is par for the course at those posh country clubs the Republican elite frequent.

So Trump's victory is a victory for the red neck and "poor white" base of America who fear they'll lose bragging rights about "America's place" in the world.

The other side of the coin of victory for Trump was Trump's unequivocal articulation of the racism that resides deep in the collective American psyche. Don't forget the Constitution that's held as a beacon to freedom for the world insisted that African-Americans are only 3/4 the worth of White Americans. But the "politically correct" posture of the Democrats silenced that streak...especially in the liberal media.

Now expect the drums of hate and bigotry against Africans, Muslims, and all non-whites to beat publicly and loudly.

overnment, through the Finance Ministry, officially secured a US$18 million agreement to finance a new ferry to ply the Georgetown-Region One (Barima-Waini) route.

Finance Minister Winston Jordan said the signing essentially marked a US$10 million loan would be granted by the Government of India together with the US$8 million grant grant for the acquisition of an oceangoing vessel for the Georgetown-Region One route.

The money will be provided to the Government of Guyana in two parts – the concessional loan of some US$10 million and a US$8 million grant.

Minister Jordan said that the new vessel would bring much-needed relief to residents in the area. “These resources will be used to facilitate the construction of the passenger and cargo vessels to provide river transportation to residents plying the route.”

According to the Minister, the other two vessels are very aged and in dire need of repair. He said over the years residents have been complaining about the negative impact of the service on their lives and livelihood. “The construction of this new cargo ferry is expected to provide improved services to these residents who commute regularly between Regions One and Four.

This mode of transportation is also expected to provide a number of social and economic benefits to the two regions and the country as a whole,” he continued, noting that passengers and goods would now be moved at affordable prices

in a safe, secure and reliable environment. “This new ferry vessel will increase efficiency in operation, by allowing passenger and freight to be conveyed more swiftly with fewer delays as a reduction in traffic time. It will allow for greater market access, where the economy of scale will improve through production, distribution and consumption, contributing to the economic growth of Guyana,” the Minister said.

He noted that the signing of the agreement was also another kind gesture in support of Guyana’s socio-economic development. He recalled signing earlier this year an agreement with the India EXIM Bank for the construction of the bypass road between Ogle on the East Coast of Demerara and Great Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara. Construction on the road is slated to commence in 2017. He said there were also a number of other areas of bilateral assistance being pursued with the Indian Government, including the establishment of a centre for excellence in technology,

which would offer Information Communication Technology (ICT) training to members of the Public Sector.

Guyana’s Government will have a period of some 20 years to repay the loan. Meanwhile, Government is yet to procure the vessel. Also speaking, just before the signing ceremony, was Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson, who said the Transport and Harbours Department (TH&D) has been a very faithful servant to the people of Guyana over the years. He spoke too of the “aging vessels”, particularly the two that currently ply the GeorgetownSupenaam route. He said there were still a lot of Guyanese in these regions who depend on the services of the T&HD, to carry out their daily activities.

He reported on the MV Kimbia, which is currently down and awaiting repairs, while the MV Barima is expected to be up and running soon. The only vessel that is in operation, he reported, is the MV Lady Northcote. (Alexis Rodney)

he interim report on the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the mining pit collapse, and subsequent death of a miner at Rock Creek, Puruni, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) on October 8, 2016, was handed over to Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman.

Presidential Advisor on the Environment, Rear Admiral (retired) Gary Best, who had been commissioned to probe the incident, presented the report to the Minister at his Brickdam, Stabroek office.

In accepting the report, which was originally due on November 4, 2016, the Minister said every death in the mining industry is regrettable and its frequency is particularly concerning as the Guyana gold industry has taken off and is poised to make a high declaration this year.

The Minister noted that he is confident that Advisor Best’s report will provide a better understanding of the circumstances that led to these occurrences and how to prevent them. “I had no hesitation in my mind that Rear Admiral Best would do a thorough job and I know, even before I can read it, that it would take us into areas beyond just the death because I believe it is important for us to understand more [about] why this is happening, rather than just the circumstances of this indi-

vidual death,” he said.

The Minister further said that he believes that the act aths in the mining industry to zero.

“For the year… we’ve had six deaths, including this one.

Each one is one too many and the GGMC, in conjunction with the Ministry, we are working to ensure that we avoid accidents altogether by teaching miners best practices, by being more vigilant with our work and in our work… there is room for improvement all around,” he said. Additionally, Minister Trotman said the Ministry remains committed to supporting the probe into the matter and hopes to engage him after he has submitted his final report. “The real work has to start after we would have gone through the recommendations to see how we can implement them,” he said.

Meanwhile, in an effort to bring some context to the re-

port, Advisor Best said that this preliminary report has examined the regulators in the industry and a probe into other aspects of his mandate, starting with the operators, will begin today. “We want to be as thorough as we can and, so far, we have had good cooperation at the upper management level, but it was quite difficult getting the evidence from the mines officers in the field. I think that it was quite tough and we’ll have to go back there again and meet with some rangers to try to understand exactly what occurred,” he said.

The final report of the CoI is due on Monday, November 21. On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, Best was swornin by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, to lead a probe into the incident that resulted in the death of 33-yearold miner Keon Wilson on October 8, 2016.

News Guyana accredits new Palestinian, South African diplomats A

s Guyana looks to strengthen bilateral relations with its international partners, President David Granger on Wednesday accredited diplomats from the State of Palestine and the Republic of South Africa.

High Commissioner of South Africa to Guyana, Xoliswa Nomathamsanqa Ngwevela, presented her credentials to the Guyanese Head of State at his official residence – State House.

Upon accrediting the new High Commissioner, President Granger in brief remarks said Guyana is looking forward to cooperating with the Republic of South Africa in the areas of climate change and environmental management as his Administration pushes to make Guyana a ‘Green State’.

“Guyana is pursuing a path to become a ‘Green State’ (and) we look forward to sharing our experiences on the mitigation of the impact of global warming, the demarcation of national parks, the designation of protected areas, the generation of energy from renewable sources and the protection of wildlife with the Republic of South Africa,” the President said.

He further pointed out that despite being a small country on the continent of South America, Guyana

She concluded that her country is cognisant of the absence of a mission here but noted that this would change some time in the future to support the expansion of political and economic diplomacy, especially given the fact that Guyana is a county with an African Diaspora.

The Palestinian Diplomat went on to highlight that her Government cherishes its relations with Guyana and with this concrete establishment of diplomatic relations at an ambassadorial level, she invited the Guyanese Leader to

also appoint a diplomatic representative in Palestine.

Furthermore, President Granger posited that Guyana has and will continue to support the struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination and for a homeland, without the threat of force, aggression and interference from other states. He pointed out too that Guyana was the first Caribbean Community (Caricom) country to recognise the State of Palestine as a free, independent and sovereign State based on its 1967 borders.

“Guyana will continue to support efforts to remove all obstacles to self-determination and human development of the people of the State of Palestine. Guyana upholds the rights of all peoples to promote their development free from the threat of force and aggression, abhors interference in the internal affairs of other states. We promote friendly relations among all nations based on mutual respect and mutual co-operations,” the Head of State remarked.

Guyana and Palestine established formal diplomatic relations on February 21, 2013, while Guyana and diplomatic ties between Guyana and South African was established on November 4, 1994.

hankfully the issues surrounding Mental Health are coming to the forefront and are being increasingly spoken about, understood and accepted, despite the slow progress. Unfortunately, another area of our health is in serious decline and is being ignored or sidestepped by too many; the issues surrounding our moral health.

As much of the world reels in the aftermath of what has happened in the US, irrespective of your political standing or the reasons for it, there is no escaping the fact that the moral compass of those in power is far off course. It is disturbing that so many people were able to overlook such moral deficiencies and that perhaps points to the deficiencies of our own nature and the sad truth that so many have lost the most basics of human decency.

The stability of society is really based on a foundation that relies heavily on the actions of its citizens and their ability to choose between right and wrong. Most of us will have chosen wrong at various times in our lives, giving in to temptation and desire above righteousness. This is part of human nature and generally there is an acceptance that striving to behave justly will triumph most often to ensure that the compassion needed for the world to endure survives. This self-command is an attribute that many possess and manifests into people behaving justly, even when they could get away with acting unjustly.

There have always been those who choose wrong consistently, blatantly and unashamedly. The frightening thing is that the numbers of these types of people are increasing at an alarming rate and the moral fibre of our society is being mercilessly torn. The absence of self-command, if not part of a mental health deficiency, is an arrogant, egotistical trait that is destroying our nation. It negates responsibility to the harmony and wellbeing of society or the people within it.

Responsibility can be a rather abstract concept as it is something very individual in nature due to a private perception and acceptance. Our morality is just as difficult to standardise. While most people accept their responsibilities as parents, we know many others do not. Many of us accept our responsibilities as family members, while again, others do not. Perhaps the most apparent is the diminishing social responsibility we have for our fellow community and then further afield, for our fellow human being. Who chooses to hate someone they have never met and know nothing about?

How can we justify ill treatment and systematic oppression in a bid to elevate ourselves? What part of our selves has been lost to create such callous and brutal opinions of others?

As with most things, perceptions about morals are leaned very early in childhood and are mostly influenced by parents and caregivers, then later, school teachers and general ethics of school policy. The emphasis on childhood interactions and role models cannot be stressed too strongly, as so many attributes of a person’s attitude to such things are formed in early childhood.

What we are exposing our children to regarding morals, responsibilities and care is not being effectively taught through lip service during moral education at school, no matter how well placed the sentiment is. It is not even being taught effectually within the religious fractions, despite the clear and compassionate messages that are intertwined in the faiths. It is being taught by the actions of the people within their surroundings. Ask yourself the questions. Am I only responsible for myself? For the children I bring into the world?

For those with whom I share the same blood? For those who I am akin to with race? All people of my gender? Those in my part of the world? Where does my responsibility end?

Our morals are closely linked with what we believe are our responsibilities. The bar has been lowered on what many believe those responsibilities to be. But as long as there are still people in the world who are willing to treat fellow human beings with respect, care and compassion, the basis of human kindness will continue and will ensure that not everyone is willing to accept survival of the fittest means trampling over those in weaker positions. Not everyone is willing to disregard the moral standing that used to more often than not prevail.

Not everyone is plagued by a lack of self-command. If the next generation continue to witness those who hold on to their self-command there is a chance they will follow suit.

hile reports of the imminent dismissal of Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) General Manager Nizam Hassan, who is before the courts, have begun to surface, Agriculture Minister Noel Holder on Wednesday said he was unaware of any decision to have Hassan sent home and had no intention of doing so.

When contacted on Wednesday, Minister Holder said he was not informed of any such decision. In fact, what he is aware of is the former Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) General Manager had applied for leave and was granted same.

Holder was also unsure about the decision to be taken by members of the GRDB, who were expected to meet on Wednesday to decide on the way forward.

The GRDB General Manager and his co-defendant are accused of being involved in a multimillion-dollar fraud.

The woman’s husband, Hanniel Madramootoo, a project engineer within the Agriculture Ministry; his

brother, Philip and friend, Nizam Ramkisson, both Directors of Constantine Engineering and Construction Limited of Trinidad and Tobago, were also jointly charged.

Only Hassan and Desouza-Madramootoo appeared in court; arrest warrants have since been issued for the others who are said to currently be in Trinidad and Tobago

Hassan and DesouzaMadramootoo were charged with intent to defraud together along with three others by continuously approving payments for substandard and faulty works during the rehabilitation of the GMC building at Robb and Alexander Streets, Georgetown.

Hassan and his co-accused were not required to plead to the indictable charge, but were released on $250,000 bail each and have been ordered to report to the headquarters of the Special Organised Crime Unit every Friday.

The matter has been adjourned until December 7.

During the course of the audit into the operations of New GMC, it was found– based on the selection of three vouchers related to the construction of GMC’s office building for review – that incorrect building materials were used.

Children abandoned for days as mother attends birthday party … Police, CPA launch an investigation

our children were on Tuesday taken to the Suddie Public Hospital in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) for thorough medical examinations after their mother left them unattended to go to a birthday party on the West Coast of Demerara.

After the medical examination, the children were placed into the custody of the Childcare and Protection Agency (C&PA), which has since launched

an investigation into the incident.

Reports are that on November 8, 2016, Commander of G Division (Essequibo Coast- Islands) Khali Parashram received information at about 19:00h about the children being neglected and abandoned by their mother. Acting on information, a Sergeant and ranks attached to the Division visited the home of the 40-yearold woman at Dry Shore

Village. The ranks found the four children ages 13, seven, five and three in the home. The mother was expected to return home on Monday but reportedly did not. Residents, having observed what was taking place, provided meals for the children and called the Police.

When contacted, an officer of the C&PA noted that she is assisting with the investigation.

Education of girls encouraged ... as 2016 State of the World Population Report launched

he education of girls was the main point underscored at the launch of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) 2016 State of the World Population report on Wednesday.

The launch was hosted in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady of Guyana and the Social Protection Ministry. The need for educating girls was stressed as the principle means to end the scourge of teenage pregnancy. This sentiment was expressed

by Guyana’s First Lady Sandra Granger who stated that she held the social issue to her heart, and as such, she was quite concerned over the statistics in Guyana.

“Teen pregnancy impacts the health, education, social and economic well being of our adolescent girls. It is a matter of concern that the Caribbean ranks second to Sub-Saharan Africa as having the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world [and] of greater concern that Guyana has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the Commonwealth Caribbean,” she explained.

Mrs Granger added that she recently learnt that Sophia, Greater Georgetown has the highest rate of teenage mothers in Guyana.

She told the gathering that the country needs to have more discussions and programmes to combat the issue, underscoring the need that fathers of the babies must be included in the said discussions.

a higher rate of being diagnosed with cervical cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Guyana.

Also addressing the launch was Junior Education Minister Nicolette Henry who noted that if girls are not educated, this will hinder the future generation.

“The world has already done well in many ways for the boys in terms of their education, it is well past time for us to do equally so for our girls,” she noted.

Minister within the Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Ministry, Valerie Garrido-Lowe, stated that more investments need to be made for girls in hinterland communities while Junior Infrastructure Minister Annette Ferguson posited that the girls’ education is integral for the country to attain the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

Ferguson also highlighted that our young people must be able to take up non-traditional career especially in the fields of Science and technology, noting that that gender roles are being redefined and the culture changes.

Linden's centenarian celebrates 105th birthday …"I feel good!"

hough her memory is failing her now, Linden's oldest resident Agatha Campbell, affectionately called “Mama Gathie” by residents in the community, continues to have a bubbly personality even at 105 years old. Guyana Times recently sat down with the charismatic Campbell at her Christiansburg, Wismar home and she appeared to be in good spirits, though she seemed appalled that she has lived to see that age. Born in the year 1911, the centenarian who celebrated her 105th birthday on September 19, exclaimed, "I feel good! I feeling happy. God is love", before belching out a hearty laugh, when asked how it feels to be 105. A celebration was held at her home on September 21 to commemorate her birth anniversary. The event was graced by the presence of Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence, in addition to numerous family and friends as well as members of the St Aidan's Anglican Church which she attends.

"The birthday was excellent.

We had a nice prayer and a few things; spent a nice afternoon," her son Lincoln told this publication.

According to Lincoln, who resides in the same house, Campbell presently has no major health problems and her sight is excellent.

"Nothing serious, nothing like high blood pressure or diabetes," he noted.

She has however, more significantly, refrained from one of her favourite pastimes – caring for her flower garden. Even after she turned 100, spending time in

her then vibrant garden was one of her top priorities. It seems as though the lack of her presence has been felt, as most of the budding plants which were present in Campbell's garden a few years ago have now disappeared. These days, “Mama Gathie” – who moved to Linden from Dalgin, along the Demerara River many years ago – spends most of her time indoors, or looking out while sitting on the verandah. Her son related that she now only remembers the names of close relatives and can be a little mischievous at times.

"She would call and say she want something and when you go, she ain't want it," he said humorously. While “Mama Gathie” does not remember much these days, she is surrounded by family, neighbours and friends whose love seems to keep her going.

he Cuban Government has announced it will hold five days of nationwide military exercises to prepare for “a range of enemy action”. Cuba did not link the exercises to the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the US presidential election.

But analysts say such exercises have in the past been held at times of tension or to send a signal to the US. During his campaign, Trump said he would reverse the recent thaw in relations between Cuba and the US. Cuba’s Defence Ministry announced the move in the government-run newspaper Granma.

It said the manoeuvres, dubbed Bastion Strategic Exercises, would be held from November 16 to 18,

Jamaica’s EU-funded Sugar Transformation Programme extended

amaica’s Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Karl Samuda, has welcomed the oneyear extension granted by the European Union Commission for the completion of Jamaica’s Sugar Transformation Programme.

The disclosure was made at the 79th annual conference of the Jamaica Association of Sugar

Technologists (JAST) in Ocho Rios, recently, according to a news release from the Ministry.

Samuda announced that the Sugar Transformation Programme, which should have ended September 2016, will now be extended for an additional period to September 2017 to facilitate completion of some of the projects being implemented.

housands of public workers have stormed the Rio de Janeiro assembly in protest at austerity plans to deal with the Brazilian city’s financial crisis.

The measures, including cuts salaries, were announced last week. Many public workers have not been paid in months.

On Monday the federal government froze Rio’s accounts ordering the state to pay millions of dollars in unpaid debt. The demonstrators, mostly firefighters, Police and prison officers, spent three hours inside the assembly chamber.

During the occupation some wrecked windows, doors and offices. Assembly Speaker Jorge Picciani called the protest “an affront to the democratic rule of law unprecedented in the politi-

cal history of Brazil”.

Both the state of the city of Rio de Janeiro have been struggling with a longstanding financial crisis because of a drop in global oil and commodity prices.

The state declared a financial emergency ahead of the Rio Olympics earlier this year saying it did not have the funds to provide security for the Games and to finish a metro line.

Governor Luiz Fernando Pezao said that unless the austerity measures were approved by the state assembly, he could not guarantee that workers would receive their full salaries next year.

With tax revenues dropping, Rio has already made sharp budget cuts. Pezao said he would travel to the capital Brasilia to negotiate with the federal Government. (BBC News)

Colombia domestic sales of cocaine, marijuana worth US$2B annually – Govt

ales of illegal drugs inside Colombia were worth more than US$2 billion in 2015, the equivalent of 0.75 per cent of gross domestic product, the government said on Wednesday.

There are at least 1.5 million consumers of cocaine, marijuana and syn-

thetic drugs like ecstasy in the Andean country, the national planning agency said in a report, placing Colombia fourth in rates of drug addiction in South America.

Colombia is one of the world’s top producers of cocaine, with the capacity to make 646 tonnes of the drug

annually and more than 96,000 hectares devoted to cultivation of coca. Most of that is destined to be trafficked overseas. Authorities say marijuana growing is on the rise.

The country was once infamous as the home of the Medellin and Cali drug cartels, but in recent years drug

gangs have fragmented into smaller groups amid law enforcement crackdowns.

Colombia is no longer only a producer of drugs but home to an increasing number of consumers, the report said, adding police confiscated 115 million personal doses of illegal narcotics last year. (Reuters)

t Lucians are getting an early New Year gift from Prime Minister Allen Chastanet. He has announced that from February 1, 2017, the island’s Value Added Tax (VAT) rate will move to 12.5 per cent, down from the current 15 per cent.

In a televised national address on Monday night, in which he announced the VAT reduction in keeping with his United Workers Party’s (UWP) election campaign promise, Chastanet declared that the tax had “destroyed” businesses and drained St Lucians to the core. “We promised the people of St Lucia a restructured tax regime that would be less burdensome without compromising the revenue base and we aim to keep this promise,” he said.

According to the Prime Minister, the move would put an estimated EC$52.5 million (US$19.4 million) a year back into the hands of citizens who have been pleading for relief from the tax measure.

US media report that Mrs Clinton is ahead in the popular vote, albeit by less than one per cent, though Trump carved a path to victory through the electoral college.

As news of the result was confirmed, they began to send congratulations – some fulsome, some more tentative – to the business mogul.

Russia

President Vladimir Putin has said he is willing fully to restore ties with the US following Trump’s victory.

“We heard the campaign statements of the future US presidential candidate about the restoration of relations between Russia and the United States,” Putin said on Wednesday.

“It is not an easy path, but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development.

“This would be good for both the Russian and American people and have a positive impact on the climate of world affairs.”

China

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Donald Trump in a telegram, state TV reported.

Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said that China was hoping to work with the new US Government to boost bilateral relations.

“US China trade relations are mutually beneficial. Two mature big powers like the US and China will handle things well,” foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said.

Iran

President Hassan Rouhani said the result would not have any impact on Iran’s policies.

He was quoted by State media as saying the election result reflected internal discontent and instability within the US

which would take a long time to be solved.

Speaking in relation to the Iran nuclear deal, President Rouhani asserted that it was a clever move by the Iranian government to establish it as a UN Security Council resolution rather than a deal with a single government.

Iraq

Prime Minister Haider alAbadi congratulated Trump, saying he’s looking forward to America’s continued support in his country’s fight against Islamic State (IS).

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani said that his country and the US are “strategic partners in the fight against terrorism and partners in development”. “[The] Afghan government is hopeful that close cooperation [with] the new president-elect will further deepen ties between the two countries,” a statement released by the presidential palace said.

Canada

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that “Canada has no closer friend, partner and ally than the United States”.

“We look forward to working very closely with President-elect Trump, his Administration, and with the United States Congress in the years ahead, including on issues such as trade, investment, and international peace and security,” he says.

Mexico

Conspicuously, President Enrique Pena Nieto does not congratulate Mr Trump on his victory.

Instead, he congratulates the US “for its electoral process” and tells the president-elect that he hopes the two countries will work together to form a stronger relationship.

Venezuela

The Foreign Ministry congratulated Donald Trump on his win, adding that they hoped the new chapter would be marked by “respect for nonintervention in internal affairs”.

UK

In her message of congratulations, Prime Minister Theresa May focused on the “special relationship” between the two countries.

She said that she hoped that Trump’s win would mean a continuation of shared values, including “freedom, democracy and enterprise”.

France

President Francois Hollande said Trump’s victory “opens a period of uncertainty”.

Speaking in a televised address, he said that there was now a greater need for a united Europe, able to wield influence on the international stage and promote its values and interests whenever they are challenged.

Wall Street surges after Trump wins White House

S stocks rose sharply on Wednesday in a dramatic turnaround from deep overnight losses as Wall Street embraced the upset presidential election victory of Republican Donald Trump.

After warning for months that a Trump White House would create uncertainty and damage sentiment, investors poured money into sectors that may benefit from the former reality TV show star’s victory.

That was a steep reversal from the previous night, when financial markets reacted violently as Democrat Hillary Clinton’s path to victory disintegrated and S&P futures dropped five per cent before a trading limit kicked in.

“The stock market is acting like a teenager. It makes a lot of demands, but it doesn’t know what it wants,” said Jake Dollarhide, Chief Executive Officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Gains of over three per cent each in the heavily weighted healthcare and financial sectors pushed the Dow Jones industrial average up over one per cent.

The Dow was just shy of its record high.

The real estate sector fell 2.28 per cent and utilities lost 3.68 per cent. Both sectors are proxies for bonds, which also fell.

“Anything that Trump mentioned during the campaign, any industry he has mentioned, favourably or unfavourably, is moving today big-time,” said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.

A curb on drug pricing was a key campaign theme for Clinton, while Trump has called for repealing the Affordable Care Act and loosening restrictions on banks enacted after the financial crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 1.4 per cent to end at 18,589.69, just 0.25 per cent below its all-time high set in August. The S&P 500 surged 1.11 per cent to 2163.26 and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.11 per cent to end at 5251.07.

Trading volume was the highest since June, when Britain voted to abandon the European Union.

DoubleLine Capital Chief Executive Jeffrey Gundlach, known as the “Bond King”, said stocks rebounded strongly from overnight losses because investors believe Trump’s policies are better for economic growth in the shortterm than Clinton’s.

Republicans maintained their majorities in both chambers of the US Congress, potentially enabling the party to reshape Washington with two years of “unified” Government.

“Regardless of the fact you had a Republican sweep, there are still checks and balances in place,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities in New York.

“So you are going to have some of your more fiscally conservative Republicans that will certainly slow (Trump) down from doing anything crazy in terms of policy changes.”

Wall Street is typically seen as preferring gridlock, or shared control of the White House and Congress, over a sweep of both chambers of Congress and the presidency.

At a press briefing held on Wednesday, at GWI’s boardroom, Vlissingen Road, Dr Van West-Charles said that GWI refurbished the Turkeyen and North Ruimveldt wells, and connected the Sophia communities.

He noted that about 20,000 residents are expected to benefit from the supply of water in Sophia by next week. The GWI is working to strengthen infrastructure with an additional well in the area.

“In addition to that, we are about to sign a contract for the rehabilitation of Cummings Lodge and once that becomes successful,

that whole corridor would be adequately served,” Dr Van West-Charles indicated.

The provision of the water is part of GWI’s effort to eliminate Sophia’s water woes by the middle of 2017.

Charles said.

Meanwhile, the GWI is expected to resume distributing filters to hinterland communities that do not have access to potable water to reduce instances of water contamination. Dr Van West-Charles said this activity will recommence next week.

he local cycling season is winding down with just a handful of events on the official calendar remaining.

However, after the end of the National three-Stage, Team Evolution’s Raul Leal and Team Coco’s Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey have both decided that the National Sports Commission organized event last weekend will be the last race of the year for the duo.

Both riders had faced difficulties in the first stage of the races, forcing them out of contention, but their eyes are set on the 2017 season.

Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, Leal elucidated that “the season is wrapping up now and most of the men are saying that they are closing off the season and they have stopped training and I don’t think I will be racing back for the rest of the year.”

Leal explained that

based on his knowledge, “It is likely to have two more races coming up and I want to participate but my team is saying that we shouldn’t participate because we have to participate in something concerning Digicel, but I’m not sure.” Similarly, “Obeah Man” pointed out that it is not a great chance that he will be in competitive cycling for the rest of the 2016 season.

“Well, I think for the rest of the year I am going to be off the bike and start hitting the gym.” The Cocos rider indicated that he has his sights set on the 2017 season.

Looking back on the year, it has been challenging for both wheelsmen and they are hopeful for the 2017 season to

be blowing good win on their careers.

“The year 2016 was kind of a rough one for me because I had to go through a lot of stuff like for example, I had some injuries and I tried to recover multiple times but as soon as I had recovered, something else happens afterwards.” Jeffrey stated.

Meanwhile, Leal “would rate 2015 better than 2016 because it was rough and I would give it 60 out of 100.”

Leal has seven victories for the year; finishing second twice in his last three races but was forced to withdraw from competing the first stage of the Three-Stage race due to ill health while Jeffrey has only one win for the year but has not been in full fitness after being faced with multiple injuries as well as a mechanical problem during the first stage of the Three-Stage.

Jamaica seeking improved performances in new season

he Jamaica Scorpions arrived in Guyana on Wednesday to clash with the home team in their first match of the 2016/2017 West Indies Cricket Board Professional Cricket League Digicel Regional Four-Day competition on Friday at the National Stadium, Providence and though their main goal will to be produce a competitive match against the defending champions, newly appointed head coach Robert Samuels is already looking ahead stating that the team needs to play consistently throughout the entire season. Prior to the Professional Cricket League, Jamaica enjoyed a five-year championship winning streak at the four-day level under the leadership of Tamar Lambert but in the last two years they have failed to look the team of years gone by. Samuels attributed this to the team going through a rebuilding phase and hopefully that the young players would have gained the necessary experience and are ready to compete.

“After winning five titles, most players left and we have been in transition for two years as a team and now some of the guys are heading into their third year and I’m hoping that they now understand what

first-class cricket is all about,” the coach explained.

Last season, the Scorpions finished third on the points table after playing 10 games, losing six times and winning only four. Their highest total in the first innings was 445 against the Windwards Volcanoes and their next best team total being 291 against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force.

On the individual aspect, opening batsman John Campbell led the batting charts with 583 runs at an average of 32.38, scoring one century and two half-centuries. Recently selected West Indies A team player Andre McCarthy was next in line with 520 runs at an average of 27.36. With the red ball former West Indies player Nikita Miller and now captain, led both the teams and the

competition bowling charts snaring 65 wickets from nine matches. Quizzed on if having those players who had some commendable performances last year and the likes of West Indies players Chadwick Walton and Jermaine Blackwood along with the rising talents such as Damion Jacobs and Brandon King, will translate into an improved performance, the former West Indies opener stated that the players must produce the goods on the field especially against Guyana on home turf. “Names don’t play cricket, at the end of the day you have to do your best to ensure we have good results, we are playing the defending champions and to me this is like a final, they won the title for two years and they have a good squad on the park and are playing really good cricket,” Samuels responded.

The Jamaicans will have their final practice session at the Stadium today from 13:00h after which they play the Guyana on Friday from 09:30 hrs. nother zone champions have be crowned, this time it is Number Eight Secondary which defeated Rosignol Secondary in the West Berbice zone final of the 2016 edition of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) National Secondary School Cricket League (NSSCL).

Rosignol Secondary won the toss and decided to bat.

Their decision to bat first backfired as they were dismissed for 98 in 23.1 overs.

Bowling for Number Eight, Saeed Busjith returned figures of 4/15 and Nigel Deodat took 2/26.

Number Eight responded with 102/2 in a mere 8.3 overs. Nigel Deodat smashed an unbeaten 38 to lead the chase along with Devenand Persaud who made 22 not out. Wazim Inshan contributed 19 earlier.

At Enterprise, Enterprise Secondary trounce Hindu College after they dismissed them for 36 in 7 overs.

n an attempt to capture the T20 World Cup of Cricket for the Blind and Visually impaired title the West Indies Cricket Committee for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WICCBVI) has named a 16 member squad.

It is the second time the event will be hosted and this time the stage is set for India, starting with the opening ceremony on Monday 30 January 2017 in Delhi India and concluding

with the finals in Bengaluru on February 12th 2016.

seven-car team from Bushy Park Motor Sports Inc (BPMSI) will see action at South Dakota in Guyana this weekend as the 2016 Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) reaches its fourth and final round.

Three 40ft containers loaded in the Bushy Park Barbados pits before the weekend were scheduled to land in Guyana on Wednesday.

Mark Maloney (Digicel/ RBC/Maloney Racing Team Mazda RX-3) will contest Group 4 2wd, in which he has won five of the nine races so far this year; apart from being elbowed out of the opening race at Jamwest in Jamaica in May, he has a 100 per cent finishing record, winning all three races at Wallerfield in July, then the third race at Bushy Park in September, after a thrilling duel with Barry Mayers (Suzuki SX-4).

The Group title will be decided between Maloney, Jamaica’s Peter Rae (Mazda RX-7) and T&T’s Franklyn Boodram, who looks set to be racing his Renault Megane Trophy for the last time, as the car has recently been advertised for sale.

The top group is split this year, with a year-end Champion to be declared in both 4wd and 2wd and no Overall CMRC Champion.

Guyana’s Paul Vieira is Champion Elect in Gp3, having won eight of the nine races in his former Mazda RX-7, which he campaigns under the T&T flag; even if he failed to finish three times at South Dakota, no-one can prevent him winning back-to-back titles. But there’s a huge scrap on the cards for the places behind him, with just eight points spread across the next four drivers, including equal fourth Steve King (Automotive Art/Valvoline/ Percy King Auto Parts Toyota Starlet), who claimed his first CMRC win for Barbados at Wallerfield.

In his battle with Guyana’s Nizam Gafoor and Danny Persaud, both in Mazda Miatas, and T&T’s Ronald Wortman (Honda Civic), King will be hoping for strong performances from his three Barbados team-mates. T&T’s Luke Bhola (Civic) leads the title chase, but has scored in all nine races, although he has yet to win one.

His fellow-countryman and Reigning Champion Marc Gill (Civic) has only scored in six, as has Thompson.

Once you drop Bhola’s lowest three scores, there are only 18 points spread across these three very competitive drivers, so there is all to play for this weekend, with a potential 75 points on offer.

Thompson will be hoping that Kenrick ‘Snappa’ Husbands (Williams Equipment/MP/Big Gas/ Hilti Starlet), another former Gp2 Champion, will be able to mix up the action and help him to the title.

Qualifying from noon on Saturday will be followed by an action-packed programmes of 27 races on Sunday, slated to start at 8.20am, following the traditional Lap of Honour.

As well as three races each for the CMRC categories, there will be local events for the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club Championships.

ne of the most exciting year end golf challenge, the MACORP Golf Tournament is set to tee off from noon on Saturday.

Fresh off competition in the competitive, Digicel Guyana Classic, golfers are expected to be prepared for another fierce weekend of golf.

Some 50 players are expected to feature in the traditional event which received a $500,000 boosting on Wednesday from the machinery giants, a jump from last year.

Chief Executive Officer of MACORP, Jorge Medina said he is pleased to be associated with the event as

he Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) hosted the official launch of the Guyana leg of the 14th edition of the South American 10K Road Race Classic at the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), High Street on Wednesday.

The opening leg of the annual race took place in Suriname on October 30 and will shift to Panama this Sunday before the final leg in Guyana on November 20.

The feature year end race attracts participants from across the continent and Caribbean region.

A championship trophy and US$1,000 will be awarded to the top senior finishers in the men and women’s categories.

The first, second, third and fourth runners up will pocket US$600, US$400, US$300 and US$200 along with trophies respectively.

Junior athletes (16-20 years) as well as Masters (Women 35+), Men (40-55) and (56 and above) will also take home trophies and cash prizes.

The top four juniors will receive US$200, US$150, US$100 and US$50 each while the top four Masters (Women 35+), Men (40-55) will run off with US$150, US$100 and US$50 respectively.

Guyana male and female rugby teams seeking to win 7s titles

his weekend in Trinidad and Tobago the battle in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Men’s and Women’s regional titles will occur and team Guyana will be seeking to win in both male and female categories.

For the past month, both teams would have been undergoing intense training sessions at the National Rugby field, with the aim of getting into top shape for this weekend’s matches.

The men’s team will be seeking their eight title and Head Coach Kenneth Grant – Stuart says that the team have to address some issues but they should do well.

“For the past weeks, we have been working on fitness as one of the things and some structures that the guys are gelling into, we had some absentees due to joint services sports but everything is smoothing out”, the Coach explained.

The team which departed Guyana on Monday will have sessions in the twin island republic geared to towards addressing any technical areas and also making sure the Trinidad –base players are fit easily into the team.
