A time to rekindle the Guyanese spirit of goodwill – Granger – Jagdeo urges Guyanese to renew sense of commitment

n the midst of the celebration of Christmas today, Guyanese are urged to use the occasion to rekindle their spirit of goodwill.

In his Christmas message to the nation, President David Granger reminded that the glorious work of Jesus Christ in an obscure country, with a small band of disciples, a long time ago brought renewed hope to humanity and transformed the world.

He said that Christmas was a time to rejoice in Jesus Christ’s miraculous birth and his marvellous message of hope.

“It is also a time to rekindle the Guyanese spirit of goodwill and to be grateful for the service and sacrifice of others. We join other Guyanese to make Christmas this year a day of “good tidings of great joy”,” President Granger said.

He added that Guyanese of all religions have also been inspired by the season’s spirit of charity and sense of social responsibility.

“Christmas, this year, provides an opportunity to call on everyone to join in improving the lives of others; in bridging the gaps that keep our people apart; in reducing inequality; in ensuring a safe and secure country; in delivering the good life for all, including the needy, the sick, the infirm, the lonely and the forgotten that we especially remember and embrace,” he said.

“We call to mind today our children, the aged, the poor and other vulnerable citizens.

We remember our soldiers and servicemen who are spending time away from home, on our borders and in far-flung regions, separated from their families. We recognise the service of our technicians, nurses and other workers who maintain our public utilities and public health services so that others could be safe and comfortable,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, in his Christmas message, Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo urged Guyanese not to lose sight of the true meaning of the season.

“As the day set aside to mark the birth of Jesus Christ, it has become a signal of hope,

given the lessons left behind – messages of compassion, peace, charity and goodwill – principles that transcend Christianity, cutting across religion, creed, culture and ethnicity. At this time, Guyanese can reflect on these principles, as well as the fact that we have

been through much as a people – moments of joy, sadness and struggle,” he noted.

He also extended greetings for a joyous holiday and best wishes for love, peace, prosperity and good health to all Guyanese on behalf of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) Members of Parliament (MPs).

Also sending Christmas greetings to Guyanese was the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU). GPSU President Patrick Yarde said Christmas was, indeed, the season of love, of sharing and of festivities.

He reflected on carols that proclaim “joy to the world”, “peace on earth” and “goodwill to all men”, noting that GPSU embraced those sentiments and believed that the importance of Christmas reposed in the respite that it offered from con-

flict and confrontation.

He noted that 2015 has been a historic year for Guyana and even as everyone celebrated Christmas, time must be taken to be reminded of the struggle that lay ahead in taking the country forward.

2015 and road safety

015 will go down as yet another year when Guyana experienced some of the most horrific road accidents resulting in the loss of lives and injuries to countless others. As most recent as Tuesday night a medical doctor from the West Demerara became the latest road fatality when his car he was driving lost control and ended up in a trench. Also, earlier that day a woman died and three others were seriously injured in a mid-afternoon crash along the East Coast of Demerara.

Too many of our citizens are dying or are becoming disabled due to road accidents and we wish to press the authorities to regard this matter as a very urgent one to address in the coming year. Last week, we reported that Guyana has been ranked among the top 60 countries in the world that have not undertaken sufficient efforts to reduce accidents by 50 per cent in keeping with the UN strategy.

Guyana must therefore step up its efforts in order to catch up with the other countries and be on track towards achieving the goal set out in the UN agreement.

While this country has recorded a decline in the number of road accidents and fatalities thus far for the year, the figures are still very high and urgent steps must be taken to bring the percentage down. Head of the Traffic Department Dion Moore reported there has been a decrease in the number of road accidents and road fatalities thus far in 2015. He noted that as of 18 December, there have been a total of 100 fatal accidents which resulted in 118 deaths, compared to 124 accidents and 133 deaths during the same period last year.

These figures represent a 19.3 per cent reduction in accidents and 11.2 per cent decrease in deaths. It must be noted that pedestrians remain the highest number of persons killed on the roadways with 41 of them having lost their lives during this year.

Almost every week there is some news that someone was killed on our roadways and despite actions on several fronts, including enacting the relevant legislation and increasing the number of ‘campaigns', we do not seem to be winning the battle in significantly reducing the number of road deaths.

Even though there is legislation in place to ensure that persons use the roads in a responsible manner, there are still major lapses in the system which need to be addressed.

To begin with, we stress the need for greater enforcement of the traffic laws. This has been the call from almost every stakeholder in the country. There is legislation in place in relation to driving under the influence, loud music in vehicles, overloading, speeding, etc, but if the laws are not adequately implemented they become useless.

It would be interesting to find out how many of the drivers/ conductors who are actually stopped for breaking a traffic law are actually charged and sent to court. While we do not intend to paint the entire Police Force with the same brush as there are many professional and honest officers within the Force, we are convinced that unless what is perceived as the endemic corruption in the organisation, and the traffic section in particular, is addressed in a systematic way, we will be unsuccessful in dealing with the issue.

Further, collecting reliable data is also essential to improving road safety and reducing risks for pedestrians.

According the World Health Organisation (WHO), data systems in most countries remain poor, with 71 percent of countries relying on police data systems only. Many deaths occur after a crash victim has been transported to a hospital, so data from health systems are also needed to derive a better understanding of the issue.

Finally, along with the measures being undertaken by the law enforcement authorities to reduce the number of road fatalities, there is need for all Guyanese to move away from the culture of disregard and irresponsibility in relation to using the roadways. The Education Ministry and other relevant stakeholders should examine the possibility of strengthening the school’s curriculum with the aim of increasing knowledge, skills and understanding among children and young people about the responsible use of our roadways. Similar efforts should also be made targeting the adult population as they too are sometimes found to be irresponsible when using our roadways.

Even though some progress was made in 2015, our hope is that 2016 will see an even more drastic reduction in road fatalities here.

Memories of Christmas in Guyana and the Caribbean Dear Editor, During the season, Caribbean people in North America reminisce about the enjoyment of the yearend season, the basket of memories left behind by those who grew up in the region but make our home in other places. The Caribbean Christmas is a unique experience that people look forward to with great expectation. It is the season of peace and goodwill and almost everyone makes similar preparation celebrating it almost the same way – baking, cooking, horse racing, movies, partying, shopping, gifting, etc.

Christmas is thought to be a Christian celebration but it has become a kind of secular holiday signalling the end of the year.

A Caribbean X-Mas has become a secular-like holiday celebrated by all groups of people. It includes shopping for new items including clothing, blinds and decoration (lights, trimmings) for the home, gift-giving, feasting, exchanging cards, charity, listening to music, watch-

ing the masquerade bands, going to the horse races, visiting friends and relatives, etc. The homes, businesses and neighbourhoods are festooned with trimmings, balloons and other decorations.

In the Caribbean, Christmas offers the opportunity for renewal within and around the home.

Unlike in the US, preparation for the holiday starts weeks before X-Mas. People want their homes to look nice. So they remodel the home: old curtains taken down; a thorough cleaning and even re-painting; yard clean as a whistle.

As in North America, there was seasonal music the same ones heard in North America although there are local ones as well along with parang (Trinidad). They are played on the radio stations.

Businesses advertise their Christmas goods and services early and as such radio and television stations start Christmas programming much sooner than in North America – around late-November. The radios also played special local folk mu-

sic (including calypso and parang in Trinidad) which tends to vary from territory to territory. There were masquerade bands performing their special brand of music on special instruments, accompanied by colourful costumed characters dancing. The masquerade band would move along the streets and roadways and into peoples’ yards dancing for the entertainment of onlookers and the household.

Steel bands also played all kinds of Christmas music. There were also moko jumbie dancers and parang (a Spanish Christmas music with vocalists) bands (in Trinidad) in colourful costumes, singing, dancing and soliciting donations.

Christmas music was also performed in churches with members doing fund-raising for church programmes. Students sang carols in schools and in churches.

Christmas was a time for baking. People soaked fruits months before to make blackcake. They also baked bread and pastries. The chil-

dren looked forward to helping with baking.

The season is associated with giving gifts – to relatives, friends, business associates, children, and the needy.

Christmas was a time for family get-together. Families prepared food, cakes and other goodies served with traditional homemade drinks. Relatives, friends and co-workers are invited for a hearty meal. One does not need an invitation to visit a family for lunch or dinner, especially in Trinidad as my experience found. It is traditional for families to expect uninvited visitors some of whom may be complete strangers.

The holiday season extended over on Boxing Day. And the celebration continues with more of the same and repeats itself for Old Year and New Year. It was a simple celebration. But it was fantastic with memories to treasure!

The faded voices of past Christmases Dear Editor, One of the popular radio programmes on Christmas Day during the mid-1960s until into the early 1970s was Radio Demerara’s recordings of messages from overseas Guyanese students sending season’s greetings to their families and friends back in Guyana.

I was always glued to the radio to listen to those young voices; some very serious, some very urgent and excited and others very serene. But the messages that I paid particular attention to

were those that were sentimental in tone and content.

The students would invariably state that they missed their families and favourite meals – dal puri and chicken curry, or recalled some merry moments in Guyana.

Many students were from parents who were cane cutters and rice farmers. They were the first major batch of Guyanese who were determined to get out of the sugar estates; the mundane rural village life, and the harsh working conditions they saw their parents endured and

some of them would have personally experienced as well.

It was interesting to note that most of the students had expressed an intention to return to Guyana; as opposed to the current students in Guyana who are desperate to leave Guyana.

Many students, after graduation, returned to Guyana and worked for a while but reality hit them hard when they realised that they were excluded from good job opportunities and promotion, given the long and brutal reign of the PNC dictator-

ship.

Most of these graduates eventually returned overseas, became US and Canadian citizens, worked hard, became prosperous, and they built vibrant communities, especially in Canada and the US. In reflection, these Guyanese voices became voices of the past that may never again regard Guyana as home, if the current political situation continues into the distant future.

Missing Berbice money Sophia man shot during robbery changer found murdered A

our days after a Berbice man went missing, his body was found along the 63 Village Seashore, Corentyne, Berbice. The discovery was made at about 07:00h.

Mohamed Baksh, 56, of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was reported missing on December 21. Following the discovery, a post mortem performed by State Pathologist, Dr Vivekanand

The autopsy showed that he died as a result of haemorrhage and shock. The money changer was last seen by relatives at around 08:05h on Monday last, when he reportedly received a call indicating that some elderly people wanted to change some foreign currency.

He had indicated that he would be back in two hours and left home.

After time elapsed and he did not return home, his relatives attempted to contact him via phone but the calls went unanswered.

They subsequently made a report to the Springlands Police Station.

The Police are treating the incident as murder.

Several persons have been questioned in relation to the murder, including relatives of the dead man.

Lindeners remanded on several counts of robbery

T

hree Lindeners were on Wednesday slapped with three counts of robbery for which they were remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Nicolai Carmichael, 22, of Lot 28 Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden; Dexter Mcalmont, 22, a labourer of Lot 103 Block 22 One Mile, Linden and Khalil Mustafa, also of Linden, all denied the three robbery under arms charges.

According to the partic-

ulars of the first charge, on October 3, at the Mabura Access Road, while being armed with guns, they robbed Shawn Bisson of a Bedford truck valued at $12 million, fuel and other items, valued in total $14,160,000, property of Julius Ferreira.

The men were also slapped with a charge which read that on the same occasion, they robbed Bisson of a cellular phone and cash to a total value of $59,000.

Finally, the trio denied the allegation which stated that on the same occasion, they robbed Lakeram Shabadan of a gold band

valued $37,000.

Meanwhile, Carmichael and Mustafa were also slapped with several other charges of a similar nature.

The two men denied the charge which read that on December 8 at the Mabura Road, while armed with guns, they robbed Marlon Bisson of a Bedford truck valued $12 million; a quantity of barrels filled with gasoline, diesel and hydraulic fuel; $103,700 worth in beverages and two ladders, valued in total $15.2 million, property of Ryan Ferreira.

The final charge which the two denied read that

on the same occasion, they robbed Marlon Bisson at gunpoint, relieving him of a cellular phone valued $37,000 and $35,000 cash.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail based on the nature of the charge, adding that the quantum should also be considered. Jones also disclosed that the truck was found along the Mabura Trail by the Police, but the other items were not recovered.

Chief Magistrate McLennan transferred the matter to Linden Magistrate’s Court for December 30.

Sophia resident was in the wee hours of Christmas Eve shot when he was attacked by a lone gunman who relieved him of a bag containing alcohol and clothing.

Lloyd Scott, 34, of B Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was shot and injured to his left foot and hand by the perpetrator.

He was admitted a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to information,

Scott was on his way home when he was attacked by the gunman who demanded valuables. Scott reportedly put up a fight but the gunman discharged two rounds hitting him twice.

Scott reportedly raised an alarm and persons ran to his rescue. He was taken to hospital where he was admitted.

The Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

My first Christmas without you – a mother tells her story of losing her child to cancer

T

ime heals all wounds – at least so says the philosophers and poets – but for Lizanna Anderson it has been an insufferable journey, especially now around Christmas.

Anderson’s boy Javier Anderson, 9, had been battling cancer for over a year.

He died on January 6, 2015.

For the Anderson family, last year’s Christmas was spent in a crowded hospital room, huddled around a tiny bed; trying to make the holiday as merry as possible for the dying child – whose only Christmas wish was for Jesus to save him.

Today marks the first Christmas without her little boy, who had desperately fought to stay alive – not for himself, but for his mother who was not ready to let go.

Today, even though tears well to flow, Anderson will have to remember her other little boy, Jevon Anderson – who is alive, happy and well; and looking forward to his merry Christmas.

Guyana Times visited the family at their home on Christmas Eve where they were, at the very last minute, decorating their home for today.

“At first I wasn’t really looking forward to Christmas, because of the memories… I

am really just doing it, getting into the mood for my son, Jevon,” Anderson stated, noting she has to be strong for Jevon who has his whole life ahead.

She explained that after Javier’s death, her recovery process was going quite well until Christmas began to approach – when all the memories came rushing back, clouding her memories of happier times. These emotions cast a bittersweet ambiance around the holidays – which was always Javier’s favourite.

“You know, at first, after his death, I was fine. But now, when I am by myself it hits me and I tend to cry a lot, especially when I listen to music that he liked to listen to around Christmas time,” Anderson expressed with some sorrow.

“Right now, Javier is getting a better Christmas than me because he is actually with the person we are celebrating,” she then added, with a touch of humour.

The family will be spending a quiet Christmas this year. They will be going to the House of Prayer Church for the Christmas sermon in the morning and then spend the remainder of the day lounging around at home – trying to enjoy their first Christmas without Javier.

is her baby boy is no longer with her and Anderson explained that it does not help the recovery process when peers avoid talking about her little boy for fear they might trigger an emotional vein within her.

“He was a fighter. He was talented and he deserves to be remembered for who he was.

His life deserves to be celebrated,” Anderson said.

She explained also that the overwhelming support from her family and friends definitely helped her along the road to recovery.

Also helping the process also were the feeble and heartfelt words whispered by her son in his dying moments.

“For Javier, he wanted us to be happy. He said, ‘mommy don’t cry and if anything happen to me, don’t cry. I want you to be happy’,” she reminisced.

He said, ‘Mummy I love you’ then I asked him ‘If you hearing me, open your eyes’, he did; I asked him again, and he did, but I don’t know why ev-

erything happens on the third time, I asked him to open his eyes and he didn’t,” Anderson said, recounting their last moments together.

Javier was eight years when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancer that attacks the bones. Just a few months later, Javier was bed-

bound in the paediatric ward as the cancer started attacking his lungs.

Javier was an A student of North Georgetown Primary School, always scoring in the 90s at his exams; however the cancer took its toll – even his left leg was amputated to stymie the disease – to no avail.

Lone gunman snatches $5M from BBCI

T

he Berbice Bridge Company Incorporated (BBCI) was robbed of over $5 million in cash and cheques on Wednesday when agents of the Bridge attempted to make a deposit at a Republic Bank location.

Reports are about 06:00h employees of the Bridge Company were making the deposit at the Bank’s branch near the Bridge’s D’Edward, West Bank Berbice

location when a lone gunman pounced on them and demanded the monies.

The gunman reportedly pointed the gun at the head of a female employee and demanded the deposit bags.

Following the robbery, the gunman escaped into the nearby cane fields. An alarm was raised and the Police’s quick response led to the arrest of a man shortly afterwards. An investigation has been launched.

Health Ministry ups preparations Demerara Bank sees $2.6B against H1N1 virus profit before tax in 2015

W

ith the presence of the contagious HINI swine flu virus in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago (TT), the Public Health Ministry here said it is up on its approach of sealing off its entry into Guyana.

Neighbouring TT has reported some four deaths related to the virus, while another patient is reportedly receiving treatment.

Guyana’s Minister of Public Health, Dr George Norton told Guyana Times on Wednesday that while government might not be able to keep out the virus entirely, it has the ability to detect and control it.

He said there needs to be a little more vigilance at the Ports of Entries, nothing that his ministry has been working with staff at the various locations for them to be on the lookout for symptoms of the disease.

He said at both the Cheddi Jagan and Ogle International airports, staff there are mandated to immediately inform the ministry of persons exhibiting any symptoms of the disease.

This exercise he noted is also being carried out at the Charity, Moleson Creek and Lethem Ports of Entry.

“We have our officials ready to take actions” he said Dr Norton informed that Guyana does not have the resources to carry out tests for the disease. Samples have

to be sent to Trinidad to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

With regard to reports of an HINI death in Guyana, the minister informed that the report is not true. He said while the patient was manifesting flu-like symptoms, it turned out it was not swine flu. The patient he said was discharged from hospital and is now seeking medical attention abroad.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Ministry of Health, Dr Shamdeo Persaud told another section of the media that the patient started manifesting the symptoms upon his return from China. These symptoms include body aches, chills, cough, fatigue, fever and headache within a two-week period. He said the man was admitted to a private city hospital, but was later transferred to another private medical institution.

“We have since taken a sample, and that sample

was sent for investigation,” the CMO said. According to him, the sample taken over the weekend was sent to CARPHA laboratory in Trinidad. The results are expected early next week,” the CMO told the media.

He said although the Public Health Ministry has been monitoring the situation, it has not, over the last 12 months, confirmed a H1N1 case in Guyana.

However, as the ministry awaits the results, it is collecting critical data on the relatives of the suspected H1N1 patient.

“We will be monitoring close relatives and persons who would have come in contact with him, but at this point, there is no need for screening because a case has not been confirmed,” Dr Persaud explained.

He said that even in the absence of 29 confirmed H1N1 cases in Trinidad and Tobago, the Public Health Ministry has had an active disease surveillance system in place, particularly at the main ports in Guyana – the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and the Ogle International Airport.

“Of course you know that most of last year and early this year we were focused on Ebola. Prior to that, it was Chikungunya… and most recently, it was the Zika virus,” he pointed out.

H

aving recently celebrated its 21st anniversary with the grand opening of its new Head Office, Demerara Bank Limited (DBL) raked in some $2.609 billion in profit before taxation when its 2015 financial year ended in October.

This information was indicated to shareholders on Monday at the Bank’s 21st Annual General Meeting held at its spanking new Head Office and Corporate Banking Branch at Lot 214 Camp Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown.

According to a release from the Bank, its performance continues to be outstanding with profit before taxation registering at $2.609 billion in 2015 against $2.543 billion in 2014. This represents an increase of 2.6 per cent.

Meanwhile, Net Profit after Taxation was recorded at $1.700 billion in 2015, compared to $1.671 billion the previous year, showing an increase of 1.7 per cent. Tax obligations, including property taxes, have increased from $935 billion last year to $968 billion this year.

Additionally, deposits have increased from $45.6 billion in 2014 to $49.1 bil-

lion in 2015, reflecting a 7.6 per cent increase. DBL further indicated that investments increased from $20.8 billion in 2014 to $21.1 billion this year.

That figure shows a 1.4 per cent increase over the previous year’s.

On the other hand, during the year, Net Loans and Advances spiked from $22.4 billion in 2014 to $23.7 billion in 2015. In addition, investments grew marginally by 1.4 per cent to $21.1 billion over the previous year, while a total dividend for the year of 100 per cent per share was unanimously approved by the shareholders.

DBL has continued the recent trend of consecutive increases at the end of financial years. Last year, a whopping $2.544 billion in profit before tax was recorded, while in 2013, the Bank had recorded $1.957 billion before tax in profit, representing an increase of some 34 per cent over the previous year. Net profits had risen by 24.1 per cent.

The 21st AGM was well-attended by the Bank’s shareholders, who were delighted to tour the new building after being educated on all the new

facilities and the design.

Executives of DBL were eager to educate their shareholders on their new office. The shareholders were amazed at its cost of only $800 million.

The 23,900 square foot building was completed within 19 months with various green initiatives incorporated into the design and construction.

Extensive use of LED lights with a life span exceeding 20 years were used along with Solar – E Glass, manufactured by Pilkington, which reflects heat and accrues less energy consumption cost.

Additionally, a 5000 watt solar installation was done on the building and is expected to be expanded to its full capacity.

Furthermore, the contractors employed the use of translucent roof sheeting with sky lights on the third floor, thus reducing the use of electricity. The use of aluminium fixed louvers reduces heat gain on external walls and subsequently cooling costs, on both sides of the building.

Moreover, the VRF air conditioned system used allows for effective control, energy saving and reduction of long-term maintenance.

SASOD urges end to violence against sex workers

C

ommercial sex workers in Guyana are often treated as outcasts from general society and are many times the victims of both physical and physiological violence. In light of a number of issues affecting this section of society, the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) is advocating and will soon be lobbying the relevant authorities about the urgent need for protection for sex workers against violence.

In observance of the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, SASOD hosted another “Lunch Talk” event which focused on the elimination of violence against sex workers.

Attorney Emily Dodson reminded that sex work is one of the oldest professions in human history, yet Guyana does not have legislation that deals specifically with this line of work. She explained that “sex work” – the exchange of sexual relations for money and other benefits – is not illegal but the activities related to it are prohibited under law.

Dodson noted that Article 22 (I) of the Constitution of Guyana reads “Every citizen has the right to be rewarded according to the nature, quality and quantity of his or her work, equal pay for equal work, or work of equal value, under just conditions of work”; and Article 22 (II) “Every citizen who is able to work has a duty to work.”

And that Article 149 sets out that “no person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his or her right to work.”

But under Sections 165-166 of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act Chapter 8:02, though it does not rule sex work illegal, it states that “is a man living off the earnings, running a browdy house or brothel, and other offenCes related to sex work that have been deemed illegal, but the actual sex work is not being deemed illegal.”

Quoting from the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, Attorney Dodson highlighted that anyone who publicly sells or exposes any obscene book, pamphlet; any male person who in public or private, commits

or is a party to the commission or procures, or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of any act of gross indecency with any other male shall be guilty of a misdemeanour – (this holds a two-year imprisonment charge); finally, anyone who commits buggery either with a human being or with other living creature shall be guilty of felony and liable to imprisonment for life; It is also an offence to attempt to commit the act of buggery.

Additionally, Board Member of the Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVC) Cracey Fernandes and Executive Director of the Guyana Sex Work Coalition (GSWC), Miriam Edwards reiterated that there needs to be more done to protect sex workers.

Fernandes opined that there needs to be constitutional reform to strengthen the rights of all Guyanese and to foster a more supportive society. He also called for a revised understanding of what is really in the books – the average citizen does not understand the laws and this ignorance fosters intolerance

and prejudices.

For Fernandes, there is a need for increased public awareness and training for service providers, including Police and healthcare professionals.

Edwards also stated that there needs to be more support, cooperation and work with local institutions, particularly the Guyana Police Force.

A few months ago, commercial sex worker Noel Luther was brutally killed during his line of work.

Following the shocking incident, Otis Pearson, more popularly known as “Otisha,” spoke at length about the cold treatment members of the LGBT community and sex workers receive from society, noting that even in the 21st century, persons are still harshly victimised and ostracised from the rest of the world because of their sexual orientation.

On that note, Otisha had call on the new Government to intervene and ensure commercial sex workers and those in the LGBT community are treated fairly.

Khemraj Ramjattan took a lot of stick for imposing a 2am curfew on bars serving liquor. No one was quite sure as to what effect drinking in the wee hours of the morning had on the crime rate… or even the road accident rate. Ramjattan couldn’t produce any study to back up his crackdown – but refused to back down.

Until this week, that is. The hard-drinking Minister announced that for this special week beginning on December 23 and ending January 1, folks could imbibe to their heart’s content (who cares about their liver!) till dayclean and beyond. Funny thing is (NOT “ha ha” funny) – as the Minister acknowledged when he issued his proclamation amending his earlier proclamation – this is the week in which Guyanese drink heavier than at any other time of the year!

If there was ever a need to encourage Guyanese to ease up on drinking – now was it! And to make matters worse, December 24 was Youman Nabi – the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam. Islam, as we all should know – including Ramjattan – absolutely FORBIDS the consumption of alcohol. You’d think the Minister would be sensitive to the sensitivities of the Muslims of Guyana, no?

Guyana is a multi-religious society and the government must be sensitive to the beliefs of all religious-minded people. During the Divali-date controversy, the Minister claimed to’ve consulted all the Hindu groups before issuing his edict to settle the esoteric matter of “Panchang Interpretation”. How many leaders of the two religions now affected – Islam and Christianity – did Ramjattan consult?

While Christmas had already degenerated into one drunken daze for most Guyanese, the Minister now not only gave OFFICIAL imprimatur to this debauchery, but actually encouraged it! Oui vey! Ramjattan is now playing the role of a Bad Santa – the antithesis of the rotund fella from the North Pole, who rewards good boys and girls.

He’s now rewarding the hard core lushes who’ll now be convinced Ramjattan really never had any rhyme or reason for imposing his curfew. It was just a gimmick – or maybe atonement for all the mornings he’d closed so many bars across Guyana.

But seriously folks… we all have to be concerned at the arbitrariness of Ramjattan’s actions – for first imposing the curfew, and now suspending it. We have to insist that before the government infringes on our autonomy and freedoms, it offer clear-cut justifications for doing so. The tradition was that the government lays a “White Paper” in Parliament which forms the basis of a debate and this will then be voted into law if the majority so decides.

We cannot be ruled by the whims of Ministers.

…and hang ‘em high

The government’s under pressure, in the words of a member of one of the coalition members of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), to “charge wrongdoers from the PPP government”. The political commentator opined that the supporters of the coalition government are “angered” by the latter’s lassitude in dispensing “justice” and this must be rectified sooner rather than later.

This is a rather dangerous and explosive situation, because the sentiment is not an isolated one, and in fact is daily trumpeted in the state Chronicle and the Muckraking KN. What this steady drumbeat for retribution does is to encourage the growth of a “mob mentality” that gives short shrift to the forms of justice and all credence to “frontier, hang ‘em high” railroading of “the enemy”. The next day we saw the mad haste with the “Get Brassington” movement.

What next? Lynchings on the nearest mango tree?

During the campaign, the Muckraker always had a “comment” on its vendettas from Ramjattan and Harmon.

Harmon must be complimented for moving on now he’s in government… he has to look at the big picture.

2016 Budget consultations

Govt withholding information from Opposition

overnment is being accused of stonewalling the process of consultations with the Opposition People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) on the National Budget 2016 by denying the Party’s parliamentarians access to critical information that could aid in the process.

During a weekly media conference, PPP/C Chief Whip Gail Teixeira expressed concerns over Government’s delay in providing certain documents the Party had requested ahead of the pending consultations.

It was revealed that Finance Minister Winston Jordan had reportedly indicated the documents requested by the PPP/C were not available.

However, Teixeira believes Government is deliberately withholding information: “The Government appears to be unwilling to share information that would assist in the process of any dialogue.”

She asserted that the information requested is not secretive or confidential;

therefore Government is required by law to provide it.

“These are documents that are not secret, not confidential… We appreciate, having been in government, that there are documents from time to time that persons may not wish to share outside of government. The list of documents we requested is not in that category and in fact if one were to exercise the access to information act and go to the Commissioner of Information, there is nothing under law that would prevent the Government from submitting those documents,” Teixeira explained.

Teixeira reminded that the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC), when in Opposition, had made a

big issue about the accessing of information; however, now, they seem to have forgotten their concerns.

She publicly reminded the Finance Minister that the PPP/C Government, dur-

ing interparty dialogues, had provided all information requested by the then Opposition.

Teixeira highlighted also that the PPP/C cannot move forward and contribute meaningfully to Budget 2016 consultations without these documents and indicated that if Government refuses to share the information, then no consultation between the two will be forthcoming. “How can we... [have] serious analysis and discussion in relation to the Budget if we are unable to access documents in relation to that? Also, Government needs to share with people what’s its vision for Guyana and so if people can’t know (the vision) how will one be able to contribute,” she questioned.

Supermarkets, shops to be targeted T

he New Amsterdam Public Health Department has seized several hundred pounds of expired food items from businesses in the town as it completed phase two of its Christmas "seize your unwholesome goods", thus allowing delinquent businesses little or no chance to sell expired goods.

A large number of food items were discovered on shelves in supermarkets and shops that have been expired. Among the items seized and destroyed were baby foods, soya milk, split peas powder, icing sugar, cookies, lollipops, margarine, evaporated milk, lard, baking powder, corn flakes, essence, mustard, bottled juices, mayonnaise, salad dressing, tooth paste, cooking oils, canned milk, biscuits, jam, and confectionery items.

Ramsudh said the officers within his department have had reasons to revisit particular outlets and seize several expired goods and products on display with tampered labels: “In this age, one would have thought that entrepreneurs would respect the poor and average man who supports their businesses, by showing some sort of compassion by doing bargain sales on products, prior to their expiry.”

This publication was shown several products including nut butter, canned milk, biscuits, jam, mayonnaise, and confectionery that were confiscated from entities across the township, where evidence of expiry were visible.

According to Ramsudh, if consumers are suspicious of any marking on a food package they should report it to the Public Health Department and also if they observe that expired items are being offered for sale they should report this to the department.

Fishing industry to expand More cohesion needed in ...deep-sea fishing to be pursued 2016 – Region 10 Councillor

egion 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) councillor Charles Sampson has vented frustration over the operations of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), accusing it of being “dysfunctional” and lacking communication on the part of Regional Chairman Renis Morian.

Sampson during a meeting of the RDC said while he is in support of Morian as chairman, he is dissatisfied with the manner in which community projects are handled, in some instances without input or involvement by councillors.

He also expressed disappointment after learning that several committees of the RDC have not been meeting. According to him, the administration cannot function effectively if the committees do not meet on a regular basis. Speaking to the regional chairman,

Sampson lashed out, stating it is not “a one man show”, highlighting also that there is a serious lack of communication by the council. He said he’s dissatisfied with the level of representation in some instances.

In moving forward, the councillor said he wishes

to see more cohesion as the council heads into 2016: “Based on what I’ve observed myself, things are not going right... we are here to function in support of you, and if we’re not communicated to in a proper way, if we don’t know what is going on, we’ll be embarrassed on the road...

I want to say to you that this is not a one man show.

I know you’re a man with a lot of energy, but dilute some of it to other councillors so that we can assist you and ensure that things run smoothly.”

Furthermore, Sampson added that other councillors are complaining, and urged the administrative body to get its act together.

He noted that every councillor has the right to participate, regardless of political affiliation.

“As we slide into 2016, I hope that we become more

cohesive and look after the interest of the people of this region, regardless of what our political persuasions are”.

However, Morian has refuted Sampson’s claims stating that information regarding projects is fully “ventilated” to each councillor. He said all programmes are shared, noting that he wishes to see more of them coming on board with volunteerism.

“In response to Councillor Sampson, all the projects that are highlighted at council... every project is open to councillors to volunteer”, he said.

Additionally, it was noted that the committees of the RDC have not been meeting since it had given up the boardroom to facilitate meetings of the Plan of Action for Regional Development (PARD).

s Guyana continues to face major problems with piracy which is affecting the development of the fishing industry, plans are afoot to implement initiatives to ensure that this industry expands.

These include the introduction of “deep-sea fishing”, says Agriculture Minister Noel Holder.

During a telephone interview with Guyana Times on Thursday, he stated that the Administration was presently taking a “very careful look” at the idea of pursuing deep-sea fishing.

“There is an interest currently in deep-sea fishing such as tuna and things of that nature. So the Government is looking at this and Pritipaul Investments are leading the way on that. We are working along with them,” he informed.

Guyana Times was told that should this first venture prove to be successful, the Government may be pursuing having deep-sea fishing further expanded.

Meanwhile, the fishing industry will also be focusing its attention on ensuring that regulations are put in place to allow enforcement with the aim of having a more “efficiently regulated” fisheries sector in 2016.

As such, aquaculture will continue to be a main focus to make certain there is increased production in this area as well as progress. It is expected that the promotion and development of aquacul-

ture within hinterland areas will continue.

For a number of years, piracy has been one of the main challenges of Guyana’s fishing industry, but despite this deterrence, the industry continues to grow in economic importance.

The country’s fishing industry employs over 15,000 people, with an average of 5000 people directly employed in fishing.

It should be noted that many others benefit indirectly through fishing-related industries such as the construction/ building of fishing boats, repair of the boats and provision of gear and supplies.

he Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) is expected to once again take full responsibility for the operations of the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge, by means of a Special Purpose Company, as outlined by Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman Orrin Gordon.

He said already, the names of two directors, a secretary and an initial director has been submitted for the board to be established, adding that once all goes well, the partial responsibility will be entirely taken away from the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

Gordon said the representation was made to have NICIL removed from the structure of the MackenzieWismar Bridge by an LM&TC councillor months ago, owing to the cash strapped nature of the municipality.

He explained that the move has “aggravated” him and he is very upset over the action of councillors since the matter is one of importance, in moving forward.

“We are saying that we can’t start up without any money, the Special Purpose Company must get that money. $122 million was not given to the municipality by NICIL, my concern is what happened to the money,” Gordon said.

The Special Purpose Company, he said, is intended to independently manage the affairs of

the bridge, noting too that persons with professional competence have been selected.

Gordon further expressed disappointment with the current administration, noting that letters were sent to the Ministry of Communities regarding a number of issues plaguing the municipality. He said assistance was sought to have for example the issue of the Kara Kara toll booth which was ordered closed by the previous administration in 2013 dealt with, however they have not been addressed to date.

He explained that the municipality was only seeking an “order to be passed” in relation to the toll booth which would have assisted greatly with revenues.

“I am not happy with that situation. We went to the Attorney General to have the issue addressed, when all that was needed was an order,” Gordon said.

here is a popular saying, there is no Christmas in Guyana without black cake and ginger beer and although cake is just a dessert it’s a special threat during

the Christmas season that fosters a true sense of giving.

The famous “black cake” prepared by Hilon Khan, 40, of Golden Fleece Public Road, Essequibo Coast is in a class by itself.

Ritualistic by nature, black

cake at Christmas is something extra special. Hilon Khan’s cakes are something that is different, something that is uniquely hers, and she is generous enough to give an insight into her black cake magic.

Guyana Times visited Khan who swears her cake is special because of her “magic mixture” recipe and her love for baking. This talent

created opportunities for her to bake ‘wonderful somethings’ out of seemingly ‘little nothings’.

Relating her story, Hilon said she inherited her skills from her mother and aunts. She said she came from a rich culinary background and her relatives had a restaurant where she assisted whenever they were bombarded by huge orders for special events such as weddings, birthdays, christenings, etc.

Multitalented, Khan is versed in sugar art decorations, cosmetology and floral making. Upon her completion of secondary school she journeyed to Georgetown where she attended Carneige School of Home Economics. There she enhanced her skills in catering, food management and baking.

When asked what makes her “black cake” different from any other, Hilon said it’s her “magic mixture”. She explained that when one is preparing black cake they have to add the right spices and keep blending. Hilon emphasises that “Baking the perfect black cake is an art form that requires a perfect balance of texture, flavour and colour. One has to skilfully stir the mixture” Khan said.

Sharing her recipe, Hilon said one has to start by ‘setting’ the fruits mostly made from carambola, widely known as five finger, which involves blending or chopping, then soaking it in alcoholic concoctions so that it can absorb the flavours of the added

mixtures. Hilon further explained she would ‘soak’ the fruits for months before making the actual cake.

She said you then must weigh and measure the ingredients keenly.

“With the wide range of mixers and food processors on the market, baking a black cake is easy, however I always believe in making my own cake from scratch with my soaked fruits” the expert added.

She explained that what makes a black cake a real cake, is the amount of alcohol used. She said it is believed that like certain dishes, black cake tastes better when ‘cured’, and so she does her Christmas baking

several weeks in advance.

On an average Hilon bakes close to 20 pounds of cakes during December. Some of her challenges she said are due to the amount of orders she receives which may cause her to run short of “fruits” and she would often be forced to buy at an expensive rate from other manufacturers.

Next year Hilon said she would be expanding her business and anyone can go and buy her black cake at any supermarket on the Essequibo Coast.

“It’s something I enjoy doing, I won’t want to trade it for anything, I love cooking and I never find it tiresome, my job comes from the satisfaction of my customer” she explained.

Hilon is presently training 40 women at the Maria’s Lodge Training Centre. The women are empowered in cake decorations, baking and floral arrangements.

Her encouragement to persons is to: "Learn as if you were to live forever, indulge in it, learn from all your mistakes and absorb all the knowledge you can; the purpose of your life is to live it to the fullest, to experience it, reach out with an open mind for the newest and richest experience, every day is a gift and the gift is learning".

hristmas always evokes a warm feeling in me. One of the earliest memories I have is moving from the logies of “Letter A” (“Latteray”) to the sparking new Housing Scheme of “Ocean View”, courtesy of Lord Campbell. That Christmas, my mother took one of the uprooted “Black Sage” bramble, bereft of its leaves and lovingly decorated It with cotton balls, “cherries” from a popped red balloon, and the “shine paper” of the cigarette box wrapping. It was magical to a three-year-old.

My father by then, had already become an Arya Samajist, under the leadership of Professor Bashkaranand who had founded the American Aryan League. He was quite aware of the efforts of Christians to “convert” Hindus and through the powerful polemics of Swami Dayananda (founder of the Arya Samaj) in his “Light of Truth”, of their premises. But like most Hindus he was not only “tolerant” of other religions, but actually “accepting” of their truth. He went along with the Christmas celebrations he had encountered at the “Bajan Quarters” adjoining “Letter A”.

I was reminded of this over the last month as a debate swirled in the letters’ pages of the dailies on the suspension by a Christian Church (Wesleyan) of a 14-year-old girl who performed an “Indian dance” at a Divali concert. One concerned Hindu discussed the matter with the Pastor of the Church who told him, “you cannot dine at the Lord’s table and the enemy’s table at the same time.” Enemy.

The Hindu man recounted his interactions with Christians, very similar to mine, where he would listen to their message when they visited his home, make donations to them and patronise their Church activities. Only one Christian responded to upbraid the Wesleyan Minister – a friend of mine, Devanand Bhagwan, who practices and preaches Christianity in what I would call an “Indian idiom”. He wears a kurta, sings Christian songs in Hindi etc, etc.

This intervention precipitated another thread, where Devanand was castigated for “insidiously” appropriating Hindu symbols to accomplish the same goal of the Wesleyan Pastor – to convert Hindus away from their “evil path”. Two issues are raised: one, that one would have thought should be moot by now, and the other more fundamental but is swept under the rug by most.

Because Christianity was imposed on Guyanese originally

by Europeans, their cultural appurtenances – clothes, food, speech, etc – became part and parcel of being “Christian”.

Interestingly, in Guyana, while these have broadened to include “creole” food, for instance, Indian food is still verboten. As you read this, I will be having a Christmas lunch with my Christian sister and family and I am quite sure roti will not be served, while fried-rice and baked chicken will be de rigeur. I’ve always wondered what would happen if Jesus turned up and asked for Jewish food and exactly what does spirituality have to do with clothes and dance.

But the second point is more serious – especially in a multireligious society such as ours. While Hindus believe – with the Gita as authority – that God will accept all prayers in the spirit it is made, the Abrahamic religions of Christianity and Islam are exclusivist: their way is the ONLY way. The “other” is actually the “enemy” to the more “fundamentalist” ones.

In Guyana, Islam has not taken a proselytising approach but not so Christians. So while Hindus will blithely participate in Christian and Muslim rituals, the converse is rare and discouraged, if not forbidden, as we saw with the young girl above.

At the very best, Christians are exhorted to practice “tolerance”, with all the condescension and sufferance that word connotes. Hindus on the other hand practice “acceptance” of the “other” religion. While the Hindu might not engage in a particular practice, he is exhorted under the doctrine of “Purva Paksha” to enter into the spirit of the other’s “belief” during the interaction.

I commend this spirit of acceptance to all Guyanese on this Christmas Day.

Haags Bosch Landfill still on fire – Eccles residents express disgust over situation

our days after fire broke out at the Haags Bosch landfill at Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD) residents living in close proximity of the landfill site are still being affected by smoke.

Guyana Times visited the location on Thursday and saw smoke enveloping some buildings nearby.

One woman told this publication that her family would soon be opening a business in the area and has been visiting their property almost every day to finish preparations.

However, for the past few days the thick smoke which cloaks her building prevented them from proceeding with their plans.

She explained that her husband enquired from workers at the site as to when the “smoke issue” would no longer exist and they were told within a few days.

“They (workers) said within two days that the smoke would no longer be affecting us and while it eased up the breeze is bringing it to our building.

It is not just us alone because the other buildings next to ours are businesses too. All of us had to suffer from the stink smells from the garbage and then this past week was smoke affecting us,” the woman stated.

Meanwhile, a man complained that management at the dump site does not dispose of the refuse in a proper way.

across the roadways and even builds up at the cells at the dump site, he said.

“I believe it build up so high that they were hurrying to get rid of it and decided to burn it sometime Monday or early Tuesday morning hours. That is when the heavy smoke started affecting us. The smell and the smoke is not good for anyone’s health and some ministry needs to do something,” the concerned man emphasised.

Reports are that a large landfill fire began at Haags Bosch on Sunday afternoon as a result of “spontaneous combustion” resulting in a number of sections being temporarily closed.

Garbage trucks then had to be re-routed to the Lusignan dumpsite, East Coast Demerara.

Meanwhile, residents of Eccles opined that management should have notified those who live nearby of what was happening so that they would have been prepared as much as possible for such an occurrence.

It should be reminded that earlier in 2015 the Communities Ministry had stated that improving of solid waste management was a priority for the ministry, and the residents shared that they are hoping the ministry keeps this promise.

ugar workers stationed at the Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara (WCD) sugar estates are wondering what the future has in store for them, following the announcement by Government that the estates may soon be

merging.

This announcement has caused much unease with the sugar workers, who are now worried about whether their working hours would be less but more importantly, they are fearful that this move would mean that they would no longer be employed.

President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) Komal Chand told Guyana Times on Thursday that at this point, it is unclear as to what the merging of estates would mean for sugar workers.

He explained that the Union has no knowledge

as to what are the details of such a move, as neither the Government nor the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has provided this information to GAWU to date.

“I don’t know what they mean by merging if they mean the administrative staff, merging the lands, because they are drastically apart. I need to know that.

I don’t know what it means because they didn’t contact.

They said they are going to lay the report in Parliament so I have no idea, they haven’t sent it out, they need to spell it out, what the merger actually means,” Chand stated.

According to the GAWU President, presently, he is unable to comment on the announcement made by Government recently that GuySuCo would most likely be pursuing the road to merge some of its sugar estates.

Due to the lack of information and the fact that the Union was not directly contacted by the Administration or GuySuCo, the workers’ Union cannot pronounce on whether this decision is a boon or a curse.

“We have no idea…

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder told this publication on Thursday that with such an being contemplated about merging sugar estates GuySuCo is taking into consideration the current state of the sug-

“Uitvlugt is virtually working at half its capacity, Wales is working at half its capacity and in the situation of world prices being what they are it doesn’t make sense to expand the acreage of either estate…so the sensible thing to do would be to merge the two estates.

With regards to what the lands and estate – which will no longer be used when a merger occurs – will be used for, the Minister posited that the Government as well as the Sugar Corporation is still to decide.

“We are still looking at that to see what might be the best option. We might be able to offer it to the sugar workers for all you know.

These things have to be looked at but certainly it is

not efficient to have two estates operating at half capacity,” he said.

According to the Agriculture Minister, the announcement that GuySuCo may be moving to merge some of its estates has not been finalized, rather it is being contemplated.

“Nothing is final and these are things they are looking at. I don’t think it is going to happen January next year… We have to look at these estates, look at the canes you have, say if you have to grind it off before you not continue using the lands. It is all kinds of things, you have to look at logistics of how the cane is being moved from one estate to the other, whether you will use a canal system internally, by road, it is a decision that management has to take,” he added.

On Wednesday, Minister of State Joseph Harmon told the media that coming out of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into GuySuCo, there were no recommendations made for any of the estates to be shutdown.

However, Minister Harmon disclosed that recommendations were made for estates to become “more efficient.” It must be noted that when questioned about rumours being circulated that some sugar factories will be shutdown, Minister Harmon revealed that GuySuCo has indicated it’s intension to merge estates across the industry. an of the Match in the 2010 Caribbean T20 final against Barbados, Jonathan Foo, who scored 42 runs from 17 balls to help Guyana to victory, is back in the national set-up and looking to regain a place in the 50-over team.

Foo stormed the cricket world with his big hitting ability, but for reasons unknown to many, the talented player, who hails from Port Mourant, Berbice, fell away from the scene for quite some time.

However, Foo is attempting to revive his cricketing career. The 25-year-old in speaking to Guyana Times Sport said: “I have been out of the camp for a while so it’s very good to be back. I have been working extremely hard on my game.”

Quizzed about the role he thinks he can fulfil in the team, Foo revealed: “I see myself as a batting allrounder; I dropped the leg spin and I’m bowling a bit off-spin now.”

It is understood that both men spoke over the phone earlier this week to reach an understanding. Manohar pointed out to Cameron that the WICB needed to give a firm commitment to the BCCI that last year’s incomplete tour would be played in India.

According to the ICC’s bilateral tours programme, India are scheduled to tour the West Indies for a fourTest series between July and August.

“West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President, Dave Cameron, today (December 23) confirmed that following discussions with BCCI President, Shashank Manohar, the West Indies will host India in the Caribbean in 2016,” the media statement said.

“This agreement is subject to the WICB and the Players Association giving a joint commitment to complete, at a later date, the tour which prematurely ended in October 2014.”

That pull out by the West Indies players was led by then captain Dwayne Bravo, citing the failure of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) and WICB to respond convincingly to their questions relating to the memorandum of understanding and collective bargaining agreement signed by the two parties in September 2014.

West Indies were supposed to play five ODIs, a T20 and three Tests on that tour, but they withdrew after the fourth ODI in Dharamsala.

Ever since that pull-out, the WICB and especially Cameron have had to face a lot of criticism not only from the Caribbean community, but also from the BCCI. Calling the abandonment a

“monumental disaster”, the then BCCI administration slapped punitive damages upon the WICB amounting to $41.97 million.

This was followed by a brief lull as the BCCI itself underwent a quarrelsome transition in its administration with initially the late Jagmohan Dalmiya taking over as board president, followed by Manohar.

The change in guard allowed Cameron to buy more time, and he sought an audience with Manohar, on October

A ray of hope emerged the next day, after the BCCI’s working committee was updated on the WICB request. Besides tendering several apologies, Cameron and WICB CEO Michael Muirhead also conveyed to the BCCI top brass comprising Manohar and board secretary Anurag Thakur its inability to compensate financially. ason Holder looks, acts and speaks like a captain. He is thoughtful about the game, firm in his own opinions, and speaks his mind. He is only 24, but he pulls his players into line when necessary. He also has the potential to be the most important player in the West Indies line-up: he has played only 11 Tests, but already has a Test century and two fifties to his name, and offers consistency with the ball if not bags of wickets.

But it is a hard road ahead for Holder, who so far has captained his team in three Tests for three losses.
