The Dharm Shala House

W

hen visiting the Dharm Shala in Albouystown, Georgetown, it is difficult to miss the colonial wooden structure on the opposite side of the road. A quaint folk Victorian style house, characterised by its two and a half storeys, shuttered stained glass windows, gothic carpentry details and square symmetrical shape, it is a white and brown residential property that has been standing for more than 80 years.

Built in 1932 by humanitarian Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj, the building has been in the family for three generations and counting; it has remained the same with no structural alterations during its 83 years of existence.

nance and preservation of the structure, Stella Ramsaroop, Maraj’s granddaughter who currently resides on the property, explained to Guyana Times Sunday Magazine.

“Because it’s a wooden building, ever so often you

find wood ants and such, and we would have to replace the wood; but the structure is just the same, it hasn’t changed - and we wouldn’t change it,” she declared.

over the years because renovations were not “necessary very often” because the building was built with “excellent wood cured for many years”.

Built with planks of Mora, the family sprays the house quarterly for wooddestroying pests, and regularly cleans it to keep it in the best shape possible.

“It is a family house, but we use it for Dharm Shala as well; we use it as a reception area and for meeting purposes,” stated Ramsaroop.

She added that her grandfather built the house to keep “nearby” to his work, that is, his charity work at Dharm Shala, located opposite the house, which he founded in the early 1920s.

With what is described as ‘two and one-half’ storeys by modern architecture, the first two floors have a square symmetrical shape.

The smaller top flat, found just above an eave (an edge roof projecting beyond the building for both practical and decorative functions), has a front gable (a triangular formed sloping roof) with carpenter gothic details (gingerbread trim/intricate wooden designs).

Such houses, folk Victorian, are often characterised by aligned horizontally and vertically symmetrical windows in rows, which can also be clearly seen on the house along with the added colonial features of stained glass and wooden shutters.

After Ramsaroop’s grandfather died in 1950, the house was passed on to her late father, Harisaran Ramsaroop, who dutifully cared for it for 63 years until he died in 2013, passing it on to his children.

“My father was very efficient and conscious of things around him, he was an extraordinary person, so he kept repairing and repainting it,” Ramsaroop recalled.

Guyana Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Association

S

ickle cell disease and thalassaemia are inherited blood diseases that affect how oxygen is carried in the body.

Sickle Cell disease

Sickle cell anaemia is the most common form of the sickle cell disorder, it is where the body makes sickle shaped (crescent shaped) red blood cells rather than normal oval cells that move easily through blood vessels.

Anaemia is the condition in which a person’s blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells.

“It’s weak blood where the white blood cell eats out the red”; “…it is contagious”; “…it can only be contracted from the maternal line”; “…only persons of African descent have sickle cell…”

These common misconceptions have led members of the Guyana Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Association (GSCTA) to call for greater awareness of the disease.

“Due to these misconceptions we heard while travelling [for a community outreach programme] we realised that there is a dire need to create public awareness,” Errol London, president of GSCTA told the Guyana Times Sunday Magazine.

Normal blood cells contain an iron rich protein called haemoglobin that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Sickle cells on the other hand contain abnormal haemoglobin called sickle haemoglobin or Haemoglobin S. Moreover, red blood cells are made in the spongy marrow inside the larger bones of the body and bone mar-

row is always making new red blood cells to replace old ones. Normal red blood cells live about 120 days in the bloodstream and then die.

They carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from your body, while in sickle cell anaemia the abnormal sickle cells usually die after only about 10 to 20 days. The bone marrow cannot make new red blood cells fast enough to replace the dying ones.

“Because of this rapid destruction of the red blood cells, people with sickle cell are sustained in an anaemic state,” London pointed out.

Sickle cells are stiff and sticky, which cause a blockage in blood vessels in the limbs and organs resulting in pain, organ damage and/ a high risk of infection in sickle cell patients. An inherited lifelong disorder, it is found in persons who inherit two genes of sickle haemoglobin -- that is, one from each parent.

sickle haemoglobin gene from one parent and a normal gene from the other have what is called a ‘sickle cell trait’. Persons with the sickle cell trait do not have the disorder; nonetheless, they can pass the sickle haemoglobin gene to their children.

“Both parents must either have the trait, an AS haemoglobin [normal haemoglobin + sickle haemoglobin] or the disorder, a SS gene [sickle haemoglobin + sickle haemoglobin]. But they are many instances where it can occur, it is either AS + AS or AS + SS and so forth and of course there is a one in four chance a child is conceived with the sickle cell condition,” London explained.

The probability stands that the child can be born with a normal gene AA, be a carrier AS or have the sickle cell condition, SS. There is no widely available cure for the blood disorder. In some cases, blood and marrow stem cell transplant has been known to cure a small number of people, nevertheless, treatments to improve anaemia and lower complications can help with symptoms.

“Of course there are a host of complications,” London noted. “Just to name a few: there is jaundice, paleness, tiredness, painful episodes or crises, ischemic strokes, a high risk of contracting communicable diseases and infections and cases of infertility and priapism.”

London noted that there are some commonalities in the condition, although largely “it is also very individualistic”.

“This individuality can be

demonstrated in the triggers for each crises from individual to individual. This means that at the end of the day, the individual has to understand himself or herself and take necessary precautions to avoid going into crises,” he mentioned.

As for commonalities, London noted that persons with sickle cell should keep hydrated, use folic acid, have

a balanced diet, exercise moderately, avoid communicable diseases and infections, visit the doctor regularly, and “of course be informed about the condition”.

London found the motivation to speak out about sickle cell after having to take his son, who has the blood disorder, to the hospital on numerous occasions.

“I have seen many parents at the hospital with children, many of whom were clueless as to the condition affecting their children, which led to frustration. It is in these experiences, not being equipped with the knowledge to understand, that drove me to join the association to spread awareness,” London disclosed.

Registered under the Friendly Societies Act, on December 13, 1999, the Guyana Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Association’s primary function is to provide support to those affected directly and indirectly with sickle cell and Thalassaemia.

The primary goal of the association was to initially raise awareness and lend support to persons living with sickle cell anaemia.

ne of the priceless publications available to the public for reading and research purposes is “Views in the Interior of Guiana” by Sir Robert Schomburgk. The book contains a series of views of the interior of British Guiana by Charles Bentley, executed as illustrations for Schomburgk's work in the region.

When the book was first published in 1840 by Ackerman and Company, it was regarded as a “techno-

The book’s foreword states that the “powerful pictorial representations of the interior, rescued Guiana from relative obscurity to one of relative importance in the minds of the colonialists”.

It added that the selected “twelve views” seem to empower the viewer and transport them to the magnificent, lush tropical landscape. The book allows readers to get a clear visual sense of these landmark sites, their geographical coordinates and position on the map.

The ‘River Corentyn’

several hills on both sides: half an hour’s further progress and we found ourselves in apparently a large basin, surrounded by hills from sixty to one hundred feet high.

The river was now broken up into torrents, the white flakes of foam, which came floating down as if to give us welcome, the thundering noise of the falling waters, and a cloud of mist hung over the southern hills, all told in an intelligible voice that some great scene of nature was before us. This basin was the furthest extent of our ascent up the river Corentyn in boats; for the Caribs, who formed our crew, refused to go further…

I followed a party of Indians who appeared acquainted with this place, and after some labour and

rocks, over which the water fell, were clothed with a species of Lacis, a water-plant, the pendulous branches of which were often five and

six feet long, and the whole resembled a rich carpet: the various tints of green, the strong contrast of its flowers, and the foam of the water which rushed over it, made the scene exceedingly beautiful. We estimated the height of the fall at twentyfive feet, and that, on the top of which we stood, at thirty feet; they are almost opposite to each other, but a third, more voluminous, is formed by three channels of the river uniting at the head of the cataract, and at their junction, their further progress being observed by a huge block of granite, the water forces a passage for itself, and thence precipitates head long into a chasm full forty feet below. A large rock stands out in relief, and has been fancifully compared by the Indians to a thigh-bone and from this resemblance it has received the name Woteto-tobo.

Some of our party having visited it, and being quite enthusiastic in its description, we resolved to proceed thither; and after climbing over and crawling round numerous blocks of granite, we stood at the head of the largest fall I had before seen in Guiana. depth of upwards of thirty perpendicular feet, causes the spray to form the cloud we had observed. I stood surprised – the sight of the foaming waters below, the unceasing noise of the cataract, which made every attempt fruitless to communicate my feelings to my companions, rendered the impression of this scene powerful almost to oppression. I became giddy, and retired quickly to prevent myself from joining the dance of the whirling, white-crested billows. I have stood in much more perilous situations without ever feeling the slightest sensation of vertigo, and I ascribe it in the present instance to those masses of water unceasingly rolling in the abyss below, which seemed to urge me to follow them, a feeling which the same sort of scene had likewise communicated to my companion Mr. Reiss.

I was anxious to see the fall from below and as we could not reach it in any other way, we had to climb piles of rocks, or to seek a path across chasms, the trunk of a fallen tree serving us frequently as a bridge, while at other times we let ourselves down to the next ledge of rocks by means of lianas.

Under our feet we heard the rolling of the streams, which forced a way through summer shower, and the con-

stant moisture thus produced, covered rocks and trunks of trees with a luxuriant vegetation…Before I reached the foot of the fall I was wet as if I had been in heavy rain, but the view from that situation richly recompensed me for this trifling inconvenience…

The Indians named this cataract Wanare-wono-tobo; we called it after General Sir James Carmichael Smyth, the late much lamented Governor of British Guiana, who always took the liveliest interest in these exploring expeditions, and whose kindness and attention, during the time he presided over the colony as representative of his Sovereign, have been registered with gratitude in my heart. On the eastern cataract which I have described, we bestowed the name Sir John Barrow, President of the Geographical Society of London.”

Close to 200 years later, Schomburgk’s book “Views in the Interior of Guiana” remains significant to all Guyanese.

In 2001 Shury felt it was time to share her story, but it was too painful to recount certain events so she shelved it with just a few pages written.

Then in 2012, she started to write short pieces about various trials and her triumphs over them, but never knew how or where to start writing her personal story again until one Sunday in church her pastor said to her, “Let your anger give birth to your miracle.”

In the subsequent two hours of his sermon, “Silent Hearer” was born and completed in less than three months; entirely handwritten from start to finish.

“Silent Hearer” is currently available via Tate Publishing in the paperback and downloadable e-book format.

Shury’s goals are to first and foremost hit the bestseller list, and to publish an additional four books; two of which have already been completed and the other two are works-in-progress. She also wants to continue to inspire people through her writing.

The Shaping of Guyanese Literature

he theme of the most recent edition of The Guyana Annual Magazine is “the passage of time and anniversaries”.

This 2014-2015 issue of the magazine is dedicated to A. J. Seymour, whose birth centenary (Jan 12, 2014), was celebrated by the National Library with a breath-taking production of ‘See More Poetry’ at the Theatre Guild Playhouse.

Other activities commemorating the occasion includedmounting aplaque on the house where he lived at 23 North Road, Bourda, and finally, the induction of the writer into the National Library Hall of Fame for the Literary Arts.

With reference to the life and work of Seymour, there is information on the books he wrote like “Growing up in Guyana”; publications he edited like Kyk-over-Al, and anthologies he published like “Treasury of Guyanese Poetry”.There are also tributes by Ian McDonald, Seymour’s daughter, Joan, and Seymour’s niece, Jacqueline de Weever, all first-hand encounters with the writer.

This Guyana Annual Magazine issue also highlights the anniversaries of important dates, events and organizations in our history. These include the 1823Demerara Revolt, the 1838 Emancipation and the start of indentureship, the centenary of aviation in Guyana, the centenary of the Everest Cricket Club, the centenary of the Rose Hall Massacre, anniversary of the University of Guyana, anniversary of the Theatre Guild, and the 50th anniversary of Michael Ford Bookstore.

and copyright by Michael Lam;From Newfoundland to Guyana by Stephanie McKenzie, an article tracing the trade of salt fish for rum and molasses between the West Indies/Guyana and Newfoundland/Labrador.

There is also tribute Sheila King titled Sheila – King of Children’sLiterature.

King is a longstanding contributor of children literature to the magazine and is Guyana’s oldest living writer.

In addition to its objective of making space available for emerging writers of poetry and short fiction, the magazine has provided material for young adults and has highlighted the writings of young writers.

Founded in December 1915 bearing the title, Chronicle Christmas Annual, the magazine has outlived many other such publications, undergoing numerous modifications to meet the needs of its readership and to carry out its mandate, which is to preserve our identity and cultural integrity.

The most noticeable change to the book over the years was its name; begun as the Chronicle Christmas Annual, it was renamed the Guyana Christmas Annual and, in the new millennium, it was labelled The Guyana Annual, becoming a truly national magazine instead of a year-end, Christmasoriented publication.

The main rival of ‘The Annual’ was The Christmas Tide, which folded in 1950.

The Christmas Tide was produced by the Argosy newspaper. The Caribia, produced by B. G. Lithographic, didn’t survive for very long.

However, we cannot diminish the significant contribution these magazines made to Guyanese litera-

ture, where a nation needs a literature for self-identity, self-expression and selfpropagation.

More importantly, those magazines served to preserve our literary heritage.

It is amazing the quality of writing and quantity of information to be found in their pages, notwithstanding, the authors of those

It is said too that company paths were “strips of common land between two plantations”, also known as “dams”.

In Georgetown, the company path extended from the side of the Demerara River along the path on which the Bank of Guyana was built and eastwards beyond the Avenue of the Republic. Itledto plantation La Bourgade (now known as Cummingsburg).

Inderjeet Beharry, in a presentation to Heritage Lodge at the Scarborough Masonic Temple, Canada on Jan 29, 2005, stated that the first and oldest Masonic buildingin Guyana is situated at Company Path.

It is said to have been in use certainly by 1816. The building was repaired in 1856 and, thoughthe tower was dismantled in the 1950s, retained most of its renovated structure today.

In 1870, the entrance to St. George’s Cathedral, along with the entire width of Company Path was handed over by govern-

ment to the Mayor and Town Council.

The cathedral, its third and last construction, was completed in 1899. It was built as early as 1810, not far from its present location but grew too small for its congregation.

The second structure was completed in 1842 and became the first cathedral. However, structural faults rendered the building dangerous and it was dismantled.

The Company Path Gardens, located between Church Street and North Road, was established in 1908 whenpart of the land was enclosed by an iron rail and planted as a garden.

Today, several well-known edifices and structures have also been built along Company Path.

Within the Company Path Gardens stands the Non-Aligned Monument. It commemorates the 1972 Conference of Foreign Ministers of Non-Aligned Countries held in Guyana August 8-11 of that same year.

nacks and weight loss have a troublesome pairing, so when nutritionists made a list of what you can snack on -- that tastes good -and still lose weight, then told delish. com, we had to tell you too.

Definitely on the list is popcorn.

Whether you make it with an air popper or in the microwave, popcorn is high in fibre and has few calories, making it one of the ideal snacks when you feel the munchies coming along.

Karen Ansel, a co-author of “The Calendar Diet”, says that food with high water content makes us feel full.

Watermelon is one of the few natural foods with high water content -- about 90 per cent water and just 45 calories.

Adding balsamic vinegar, says Ansel, canhelp activate pepsin, a digestive enzyme.

Registered dietician Amy Shapiro points out that pineapple is high in water content and low in calories, making it, like watermelon, a great snack dish.

She also suggests sprinkling sea salt and squeezing lime on the pineapple for a combination that helps promote good digestion.

Yes, you can have chocolate to satisfy your sweet tooth, and peanuts, for snack. Nevertheless, moderation is key. One tablespoon of chocolate chips and half-ounce peanuts for a snack should be considered smart snacking, says Ansel.

Shapiro’s list also includes baked egg in an avocado “cup”. A high-protein snack under 200 calories, with no sodium or added ingredients. Shapiro notes that the combination of choline from the egg yolk and fibre in the avo-

cado aids weight loss.

Another fibre-filled snack that is healthy is the combination of apple chunks, walnuts and cinnamon.

Shapiro says that in addition to adding flavour, cinnamon helps balance blood sugar levels to aid weight loss. She advises however to go easy on the walnuts - use only one serving of walnuts (about 13 halves) to reap the benefits.

Health Magazine notes that in a University of Tokyo study, women who ate high-water-content foods had lower body mass indexes and smaller waistlines. Researchers speculate that the water in these foods may fill you up so you eat less.

Fruits and vegetables with about 90 per cent water are best for weight loss and good health. These include broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, and grapefruit.

bout a weekago, a Yves St Laurent ad was banned for featuring what the UK's advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority, felt was an “unhealthily” thin model. The photo, it stated, “drew attention to her rib cage, which was "visible and appeared prominent”.”The authority also focused on her legs, which it felt, “looked very thin.”

The agency stated that its ruling was not about “whether this person in the picture is healthy” but that the image would set a bad example and “images of her are being used in a way that can have an irresponsible effect on others”.

The ruling though, restarted the conversation on being thin and unhealthy, where modern research has discovered that being thin does not always equal being healthy.

Though you, your child or someone else you know may be “fabulously skinny”, which you equate to being healthy, looks may be deceiving.If you are thin, but find you aren’t eating well and aren’t as active as you should be, you may not be

fit or healthy.

“Being thin doesn’t automatically mean you’re not fat,” Dr. Jimmy Bell, a professor of molecular imaging at Imperial College, London, had said in a 2007 NBC news article.

Some doctors now think that the internal fat surrounding vital organs like the heart, liver or pancreas — invisible to the naked eye — could be as dangerous as the more obvious external fat that bulges underneath the skin.

Bell and his team had scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.

According to the data, people who maintain their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are otherwise slim.

Without a clear warning signal — like a rounder middle — there is the concern that thin people may be lulled into falsely assuming that because they’re not overweight, they’re healthy.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star has offered her followers the chance to receive a four-hour lesson from herself and her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic for the price of US$799 when she appears as a guest in Mario's masterclass in July.

Taking to Twitter, Kim captioned an advert for the event: "Make Up Class Alert Mario & I will be in LA July 25th to share all of our makeup tricks & beauty routine!"

If US$800 is a bit expensive, a new batch of cheaper tickets was made available costing US$299.

The firefighter, Aaron Van Riper, responded to a 911 call on Sunday last week in regard to a car crash in Riverside, Texas.

When he arrived at the site, he was shocked after finding that the victims were his own wife and son. They were then rushed to hospital.

While the son has been released from the hospital, the mother remained there.

Later, a friend of the family set up a GoFundMe account to help the family cover their "excessive medical bills and lack of funds that will come in over the next year."

On Thursday morning,

June 11, the largest donation was left for the family from someone named Taylor Swift. Though the star hasn't commented yet on the reports, it's strongly believed that the donor is indeed the singer.

Prior to the latest donation, Swift donated at least US$50,000 to New York

City's schools in February.

A rep for the singer said that the amount would continue growing. "This is not a onetime donation. Taylor will continue to donate the proceeds she receives from the sale of the single 'Welcome to New York' to N.Y.C. public schools," the rep said.

rolific artist Steve Douglas is a famous face on the local art scene. Surprisingly, his affinity for art did not exist throughout his childhood. He has no recollection of getting excited about painting and drawing when he was a child. In fact, he could not draw at all. It wasn’t until he decided to start his own company, Bravo Arts, that he really took art seriously. The main activity of his company, face painting, was something Steve stumbled upon while working with orphans and vulnerable children. He had simply incorporated the activity into a youth camp, and his interest grew from there. However, he never dreamt that one day he would take a risk of starting a company, more so a company of this nature. However, once he decided that he wanted to start this business, Steve spent countless hours on YouTube and Google learning about face and body art.

He imported materials and experimented, and even took a one-year certificate course in painting at the E R Burrowes School of Arts. Steve considers himself not as an artist but as a “creative person”. His brain works ‘round the clock, thinking of things to paint, to make, projects to take on and much more. Steve describes himself a “bit eccentric” with a “cheerful personality”. His advice for youths: “It is not easy to follow your dreams, but it is definitely worth it. Many times people dream of doing things or following a particular career path, but because what they want to do is not a popular choice, they do not receive the support from family members, peers and so on. If people don’t see your vision or approve of your vision, it does not mean that it is not valid or unachievable.

With discipline and determination, you can realise your dreams. In addition, education plays a big part in everything you do in life. Stay in school!” Steve’s plans to extend his company’s services in Guyana. Additionally, he plans to train more face painters and ultimately become a supplier of everything regarding face and body art in Guyana. His newest passion is recycling. The world of underground drone racing

n emerging sport known as FPV (first person view) drone racing is quietly taking hold worldwide.

A big part of the sport's addictiveness and growing popularity can be attributed to the FPV goggles worn by its competitors. With antennas sprouting out of the top, these stream video from the drones' front-facing camera as they fly through the air, some as fast as 100 mph (160 km/h).

This results in something of an out-ofbody experience, a unique mix of virtual reality and video gaming brought to life.

"FPV is such a different, immersive experience, everyone's wanting to be that Star Wars pod racer, going in between the hills," says Chad Nowak, a self-described “aviation nutter” who got hooked on the

"It began with a message on social media which stated 'watch urgent, because it is your video'," said cybercrime cell in-charge Nitin Kasana. "Every time someone clicked on the link, their entire timeline and inbox was spammed with pornographic material."

Security firm Kaspersky hacked

ecurity firm Kaspersky on Wednesday announced that it was hacked.

"The bad news is that we discovered an advanced attack on our own internal networks," the company's chairman and CEO, Eugene Kaspersky, wrote in a blog post.

"It was complex, stealthy, it exploited several zero-day vulnerabilities, and we're quite confident that there's a nation state behind it. We've called it Duqu 2.0."

Kaspersky said the attackers—believed to be the same group behind 2011's Stuxnet-like Duqu worm—were mainly interested in spying on its technologies, especially its solutions for discovering and analysing sophisticated at-

tacks known as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs).

The attackers were looking to find out about Kaspersky's ongoing investigations into advanced attacks, detection methods, and analysis capabilities.

Kaspersky said however that none of its products or services was compromised and that its customers "face no risks whatsoever due to the breach."

However, Kaspersky

wasn't the only target. The attackers behind Duqu 2.0 also spied on several other "prominent targets," Kaspersky found, including participants in the international negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and the 70th anniversary event of the liberation of Auschwitz.

According to a report from The Guardian, the malware is linked to Israel, and was discovered on the networks of three hotels that recently hosted the Iran nuclear talks.

"Governments attacking IT security companies is simply outrageous," Kaspersky wrote. "We're supposed to be on the same side as responsible nations, sharing the common goal of a safe and secure cyberworld." (Source: pcmag)

South Korea Team KAIST wins 2015 DARPA Robotics Challenge

he 2015 DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Robotics Challenge (DRC) has ended with South Korea's Team KAIST and its DRC-HUBO robot taking first prize in the US$3.5 million competition.

The US Department of Defence’s project to develop robots that can help responders in disaster areas saw KAIST beat 23 other teams from around the world in front of a crowd of 10,000 people.

DRC-HUBO is the latest of the "HUmanoid roBOt (HUBO) robots developed by the Korean Institute for Science and Technology (KAIST) in collaboration with the Rainbow Company since 2002.

Challenges included clearing debris, driving a car, opening a door, operating a valve, cutting a hole, and climbing a flight of stairs. Method: Combine first 6 ingredients in a large bowl. Add 1 cup melted butter, 4 cups breadcrumbs, and next 3 ingredients.

Spoon crabmeat mixture into 10 baking shells or individual baking dishes.

Top servings evenly with remaining 1 cup breadcrumbs; drizzle evenly with remaining 1/2 cup melted butter.

Bake, uncovered, at 400° for 20 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Turn oven setting to broil.

Broil 3 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately.

Makes approx. 10 servings.

GREATEST KITCHEN TIPS Boiling eggs? Don’t start the eggs in cold water; otherwise, it’s tricky to know when to start timing. Instead, lower the eggs into gently simmering water. Then start the clock right away.

Three minutes is the ultimate soft-boiled egg: a warm, runny yolk with a justset white.

With 6 minutes, the yolk is starting to set at the edges, and the white is firm.

The shell is peel-able, but the yolk still oozes when sliced.

With 9 minutes, the yolk is set but still creamy and slightly runny in the very centre. Best for adding to green salads or for hollowing out to make deviled eggs.

In 11 minutes, the yolk is uniformly set and light yellow. This is the hard-boiled egg that you need for chopping into an egg or potato salad.

No rinsing necessary. You may need to scrub at the most heavily greased areas with a no scratch scrubbing sponge.

Encouraging independence

arents should ensure their children are getting the support (and if necessary, the nudging) that they need to become confident and self-reliant individuals, because gaining more independence and increasingly doing more things without parents is an important and natural part of growing up.

Let them be responsible for certain age-appropriate household chores and let them help with planning menus and shopping for groceries.

Encourage your child to be sociable and spend more time away from home doing things on her own. If your child feels shy and isn't ready, be supportive-

-not judgmental--and keep trying again.

Volunteer at a local church or nursing home, help a neighbour. When children help others, they learn to think about things outside themselves, which is an important step to-

ward maturity.

Let them keep track of their own homework and tests, and help them organize their own schedule.

Teach them to be independent thinkers. They need to get into the habit of thinking about things and

forming their own opinions on everything from current news events to historical milestones to fictional stories.

Help them find ways to entertain themselves. Not every single moment of their lives has to be filled by a social calendar or scheduled activities. They need to find things that interest them, and spend time on them.

Independence is a positive thing for both you and for your child. Supporting her, when she feels clingy or feels like she needs more space to do things on her own, sets the stage for her to move toward independence at her own pace, with confidence and selfassurance.

Thunder and Lightning

A

long time ago, both Thunder and Lightning lived among the people on this earth.

Thunder was a mother sheep and Lightning was her son, a ram.

Neither one was very popular with the people, for when somebody offended Lightning, he would fly into a furious rage and begin burning whatever he came across. This often included huts and corn bins, and even large trees.

Sometimes he damaged crops on the farms with his fire, and occasionally he killed people who got in his way.

As soon as Thunder knew her son was behaving this way, she would raise her voice and shout at him as loudly as she could, and that was very loud indeed.

Naturally the neighbours were very upset, first at the damage caused by Lightning and then by the unbearable noise from his mother that always followed his outbursts.

The villagers complained to the king on many occasions, until at last he sent the two of them to live at the very edge of the village, and said that they must not come and mix with the people any more.

However, this did no good, since Lightning could still see people as they walked about the village streets, and so found it only too easy to continue picking quarrels with them.

At last the king sent for them again. "I have given you many chances to live a better life," he said, "but I can see that it is useless.

From now on, you must go away from our village and live in the wild bush. We do not want to see your faces here again."

Thunder and Lightning had to obey the king, and agree to abide by his ruling; so they left the village, angry at its inhabitants.

But still there was plenty of trouble in store for the villagers, since Lightning was so angry at being banished that he now set fire to the whole

bush, and since it was the dry season this was extremely unfortunate.

The flames spread to the little farms of the people, and sometimes to their houses as well, so that they were in despair again.

They often heard the mother 's mighty voice calling her son to order, but, since it was always after the fact, it made very little difference in his actions.

The king called all his counsellors together and asked them to advise him, and after much debate they hit on a plan.

Why not banish Thunder and Lightning complete-

ly away from the earth, and send them to live in the sky.

And so the king proclaimed this order.

Thunder and Lightning were sent away into the sky, where the people hoped they would not be able to do any more damage.

Things did not work out quite as well as they had hoped, however, for Lightning still loses his temper from time to time and cannot resist sending fire down to the earth when he is angry.

Weird word origins Many words in English can lay claim to bizarre but true-life beginnings. Let’s look at two...

Quarantine.

The word quarantine is said to come from Italian quarantena quarantine of a ship, from quaranta forty.

It is said too that it is from French quarante meaning “forty”, and aine which is used similarly to English “-ish” denoting approximation.

How did it become “isolation, confinement, seclusion” in relation to diseases in English?

Quarantine is purported to have been first enforced in 1377 from the

Venetian custom of keeping ships from plague-stricken countries waiting off its port for 40 days to assure that no hidden cases were aboard.

It came into use as a verb from the 1800s.

Ignoramus Ignoramus derives from legal Latin ignorare (to be ignorant of) literally meaning “we have no knowledge of”.

Up to the 17th century it was used in British courts when the jury could not decide a case due to lack of evidence.

How did it become associated with fools, ‘ignorants’ and idiots today?

Modern usage of the word began

with the publication of a 1615 play by dramatist George Ruggle called “Ignoramus”.

The six-hour play, premiering at Trinity College in Cambridge on March 8, 1615, was about an “ignorant lawyer” named Ignoramus, and satirised the profession.

(Although it drew an audience of about 2,000, which included King James I, some lawyers in the audience did not like it, and the play soon stirred up quarrels between academics and lawyers. The king loved it though and ordered an immediate revival. It was regularly performed up to 1794.)

Amazonian royal flycatcher T

he Amazonian royal flycatcher (Onychorhynchus coronatus coronatus) is a small bird (just under 6 ins or 16-16.5 cm) with a broad bill that it uses to catch insects, especially dragonflies, in mid-flight.

It is usually found in the forests and woodlands in parts of central America and throughout most of the Amazon basin in northern Bolivia, eastern Peru, eastern Ecuador, eastern Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern and western Brazil.

Although it carries a uniform dull brown colour, during times of courtship, and in competition with other males, it puts on a spectacular crest display that has given it its ‘royal’ title.

The feathered displays can be a brilliant arrangement of red, yellow, white, blue, and/or black plumage that lies flat on the crown of its head when not in use.

It is vivid red/scarlet in males, yellow in females, and ornately decorated with splashes of black and steel blue tips.

The species is not believed to approach

the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

cientists have divided the ocean into five main layers. These layers, known as "zones", extend from the surface to the most extreme depths where light can no longer penetrate.

The surface layer of the ocean is known as the epipelagic zone or sunlight zone because this is where most of the visible light exists.

Next lies the mesopelagic zone, known too as the twilight or midwater zone. The light that penetrates to this depth is extremely faint.

The next layer is called the bathypelagic zone, or the midnight or dark zone. Here the only visible light is that produced by the creatures themselves.

The water pressure at this depth reaches 5,850 pounds per square inch.

The next layer is called the abyssopelagic zone, also known as the abyssal zone or simply as the abyss. Threequarters of the ocean floor lies within this zone.

Beyond the abyssopelagic zone lies the hadalpelagic zone. These areas are mostly found in deep water trenches and canyons. The temperature of the water is just above freezing, and the pressure is as much as the weight of 48 Boeing 747 jets. Invertebrates such as starfish and tubeworms thrive at these depths.

The channel catfish was designated the official Tennessee state commercial fish in 1988. Channel catfish are bottom feeders and can be found in many of Tennessee’s streams and lakes. The smallmouth bass is the state’s official sport fish.

The Tennessee cave salamander became the official state amphibian in 1995. Salamanders breathe through their skin and are very sensitive to their environment, so they have little tolerance for pollution.

This species is threatened by habitat loss and may soon find itself on the endangered species list.

Nature reclaims abandoned village

A

deserted village in Zhoushan, East China’s Zhejiang province, which was once a fishing community, has been reclaimed by nature after its villagers moved out.

While reasons for the residents’ departure were not mentioned, photos from the People’s China Daily website show most of the former homes now covered with tendril climbing plants that drape the entire village in a beautiful carpet of greenery. (Photos: ecns.cn)

There are both modern and historical odd jobs and their names. Here are a few.

If your child answers the famous what-you-want-to-bewhen-you-grow-up question saying “an agonistarch ”(English pronunciation ag-uhnist-ARK or ag-uh-nist-ARCH), you’ve got a weird child on your hands…actually maybe not. But in ancient Greece an agonistarch was one who trained participants especially in games of combat.

Most persons may have worked as a sort of plongeur (English pronunciation PLON-jer) at home without even knowing it. In hotels and restaurants, a plongeur (French for “diver” or literally “one who plunges”) is a dish-washer or one who is employed to wash dishes and do other menial tasks there.

You can actually earn a wage being a moirologist (moy (rhymes with boy) -ROLuh- jist ). Although this is an ancient profession, it is still done today. A moirologist is a hired mourner. Some even call themselves professional moirologists. They cry and lament at funerals, and may even get the perks of free food and drinks at wakes. In China they also sing sad songs and are called “professional wailers”. Funeral homes in some countries may offer a “eulogy pack” that can include speeches, poems… and moirologists.

Attacks on refugee hostels a growing German problem

recent arson attack against a refugee hostel in Tröglitz, Germany, has made headlines around the world. But it is far from the exception in Germany. Even as most asylum-seekers in the country are left in peace, there has been a disturbing rise in anti-refugee violence.

Often, the cases are never solved, and in many instances, those behind the attacks achieve what they set out to: spreading fear, creating a disturbance and preventing refugees from moving into their town by destroying their shelters.

According to German news service Der Spiegel, arson attacks have taken place in various German communities sheltering asylum seekers: Germering, located next to Munich. Sanitz,

in the eastern German state of Mecklenburg, Western Pomerania, and Berlin, the allegedly cosmopolitan capital of Germany.

In Vorra, Protestant parish pastor Björn Schukat was one of the first to notice the fire. Just as he was getting ready for bed, he saw flames shooting out of the Gasthaus Zur Goldenen Krone.

The fire almost completely burned out the interior of the former hotel -- which had just been repainted and outfitted for the arrival of 70 asylumseekers -- along with two neighbouring buildings.

The roof was heavily damaged as well.

On the wall of a house not far away, the arsonists spray-painted two swastikas and the message "no

asylum-seekers in Vorra."

"On that night," Schukat says, "everyone in Vorra was shocked.

Nobody thought such a thing could be possible. There were no prior indications, no demonstration, no anti-refugee slogans."

Schukat says the community had actually been looking forward to the arrival of the refugees. City hall had held an information evening and the mood was relaxed and welcoming, the pastor says.

Furthermore, a volunteer group was organized to help the refugees as needed.

In fact, the issue was hardly mentioned at all ahead of recent municipal council elections.

The fire caught everyone off guard, Schukat says.
