Sugar workers protest at Skeldon Estate E

mployees of the Guyana Sugar C o r p o r a t i o n (GuySuCo) attached to Skeldon Estate, in Berbice protested Skeldon’s administrative offices to vent frustrations over the non-adherence of practices they enjoyed when they worked at the Albion Estate in the past.

According to the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), the problems stemmed from GuySuCo’s cancellation of Skeldon’s first crop for 2017. As such, the workers were required to undertake cane cutting tasks at Albion Estate.

The employees on Tuesday said that GuySuCo is seeking to impose its practices on the Skeldon workers, noting that the practices in question have been in place for many years and were formulated through engagements between shop stewards and the Estate’s management.

It is expected that the contentious issues will be a matter for discussion at a meeting scheduled today between GAWU and GuySuCo at the corporation’s Head Office to address the workers’ issues. While specific details on the worker’s concerns were not fully disclosed, GAWU noted that it is hopeful that the engage-

ment would be meaningful and that it would address the many concerns of the workers.

tions and that the problems could be rectified only until the final months of this year. On the backdrop of the suspension of the first crop, GuySuCo indicated that workers would have been deployed elsewhere during the period that sugar operations at Skeldon had ceased.

At Wales Estate

It was only this Monday that several sugar workers attached to the Wales Estate continued their protests over the non-payment of severance packages.

Those sugar workers are rejecting moves to Uitvlugt on the West Coast of Demerara and they reiterated calls for President David Granger and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo to intervene on

their behalf.

When Government confirmed the end of sugar operations at Wales Estate last year, it was explained that cost was the main factor for the entity’s closure. It is expected that Government will keep only three of the country’s sugar estates operational and under its remit, while Skeldon will soon be privatised.

n 84-year-old women was burnt to death on Monday in a midnight fire which destroyed her home in the community of Morawhanna, Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini).

Dead is Pearl Savory who celebrated her birthday just several days before her unforeseen demise. Guyana Times understands that she lived alone in the wooden building but family and friends would visit her from time to time.

Authorities were unable to confirm the source of the blaze but residents believe the fire originated from a gas stove. One of the neighbours told this publication that he heard a loud explosion and when he rushed to the scene, the house was already ablaze.

He suspected that the elderly woman was making a meal and either forgot to turn off the stove or fell asleep. He said he heard the sound of the gas bottle exploding.

The fire spread rapidly to another unoccupied wooden building which was just a few feet away. Residents told this newspaper the other house also belonged to the elderly woman.

ension, suspense and apprehension swept across the nation as the masses followed with close interest the egregious arrest of former top Government officials by agents of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in relation to their investigation of misappropriation of State assets.

Former President and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, former Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, and former Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud were among those who were taken into custody for questioning at SOCU’s Headquarters on Camp Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Other persons, who were detained and questioned are General Manager of the Guyana Gold Board and daughter of former President Donald Ramotar, Lisaveta Ramotar; former President of the Private Sector Commission, Ramesh Dookhoo; former Secretary to NICIL Marcia Nadir-Sharma; and the son of former Labour Minister, Dr Nanda Gopaul, Dr Ghansham Singh.

These arrests and detentions come days after Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan threatened criminal charges against former Government officials, causing many in the Opposition camp to believe the actions taken by SOCU were politically motivated by the Executive.

But Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo lashing back at the Government on Tuesday said the actions have nothing to do with fighting corruption but rather about instilling fear and intimidating those who resist policies of the coalition Administration.

SOCU had requested several officials including current parliamentarians to visit its Headquarters for questioning in relation to the Pradoville 2 case but one of their attorneys, Anil Nandlall responded by informing the Authority that interrogation can take place

Arrests

SOCU officials arrived at the Opposition Leader’s Office shortly after 14:00h under directives to “arrest” Dr Luncheon, who immediately complied.

Dr Luncheon, speaking to the media as he was being escorted by the agents, repeated his unawareness of the basis of his arrest and pleaded his innocence.

At the time, Ramotar’s daughter and the former Natural Resources Minister were already at SOCU’s Headquarters. Guyana Times understand that they voluntarily visited the office for the interviews and upon arrival, they were detained.

Ramotar’s daughter was detained for over seven hours.

Shortly after Dr Luncheon was arrested; SOCU’s Head, Sydney James and British Advisor to SOCU, Dr Sam Sittlington arrived at the Opposition Leader’s Office and requested that he head down to the headquarters for questioning.

Speaking to media operatives afterwards, Jagdeo said he was “arrested”.

“After the media left, they came over and said you are arrested. My lawyers who were there, asked and there was a hemming and hawing about the nature of the charges, nevertheless we did not resist arrest,” he explained.

Jagdeo explained that ahead of his interrogation, he asked the agents whether he is being questioned in his private capacity or his official capacity as his actions as President are immune.

“I asked if they are asking questions in my private capacity or official capacity because in doing that you are going to breach the veil of immunity that I have for official acts and that will have far reaching consequences in this country,” he stated. The Opposition Leader said he declined to answer questions posed to him in his private capacity. He disclosed that questions were relating to the audit reports’ findings on the Pradoville 2 transaction, NICIL and NCN operations.

Jagdeo anticipates that charges will be laid, given Government’s “agenda”, but assured that the charges will

be challenged in the courts.

Political pressure

In analysing the situation, the Opposition Leader said he strongly believes these unprecedented actions taken by SOCU are politically motivated and meant to silence the vociferous voices against the wrongdoings of the coalition.

“I sympathise for the people who work here (SOCU) because they are under severe political pressure. Every week, the Head of the State Assets Recovery Unity, Dr Clive Thomas speaks about who they should lock up. A week ago, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, ahead of a Police investigation, talked about locking up people this week. The Attorney General put $100 million in his budget to come after political opponents,” he outlined.

In a press briefing moments after Dr Luncheon’s “arrest” and shortly before his own, Jagdeo declared that the actions being deployed by the SOCU will go down in history as one of the greatest acts of injustices in Guyana.

“I spoke about this Government’s newest attempts to intimidate society guided by a mistaken belief that they will make the citizens more compliant and have people be fearful of criticising them and exposing their wrongdoing,” he remarked.

Jagdeo maintained his long held position that Government’s priorities are backwards as instead of focusing on developing the country, it is employing vindictive and witch-hunting strategies.

“The reason the Government is doing this is because it is failing miserably in every single area across the country. It is facing the wrath of many ordinary people, [People’s Progressive Party] PPP supporters as well as [A Partnership for National Unity] APNU supporters because it has not delivered on any of its promises, it can’t lead this country to a prosperous future. In fact, people’s welfares are declining, more and more people are protesting its actions… the country is in economic disarray and we are seeing a steady insidious move to erode our constitutional rights,” he stated.

But the Opposition Leader reaffirmed that the PPP will not be intimidated and will

continue to expose and speak out against the transgressions of the government.

SOCU’s role

Jagdeo also questioned what he saw as the subversion of SOCU’s role. He explained that the Unit was established under the GPF for the purpose of supporting the Financial Intelligence Unity (FIU) in investigating organised crime.

He reminded that it was APNU was constantly cried that the entire economy was developing on drugs money.

In this regard, the former President asked why the SOCU has not yet launched any probe, made any arrest or laid any charges against drug dealers, gold smugglers or money launderers.

“Yet we have not witnessed a single action taken

by SOCU against any drug dealer or money laundering of persons who have smuggled billions of dollars or gold but we have seen the arrest of Dr Luncheon by SOCU because the Government believes he got a house lot at Pradoville 2 fraudulently,” he reasoned.

Nonetheless, Jagdeo warned that those who misuse their offices now will face the consequences in the future. The reason these persons are being questioned is because they purchased property at the Sparendaam seawall area commonly known as “Pradoville 2”.

The current Administration contends the transaction is a criminal act because of the belief that it was sold below market value.

However other persons who have property in the area including former Army Chief Gary Bess and former President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr Compton Bourne have not been summoned for similar questioning.

Govt’s response

In a statement after the drama died down, Government indicated its satisfaction with the work of SOCU and dismissed suspicions that Unit was acting under its instructions.

More persons are expected to be questioned during the course of the week including former Government Ministers Priya Manickchand, Clement Rohee, Irfaan Ali and Jennifer Westford.

International Women’s Day

nternational Women’s Day, celebrated today, pays homage to the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Indeed progress has slowed in many places across the world, and this is the primary reason that organisations the world over are calling for global action to accelerate gender parity. In 2016, leaders across the world had pledged to take action for gender parity – not only for International Women’s Day, but for every woman. The 2017 theme for International Women’s Day is “Women in the Changing World of Work : Planet 5050 by 2030”.

The United Nations has recognised that the world of work is changing, with significant implications for women.

On one hand, technological advances and globalisation bring unprecedented opportunities for those who can access them. On the other hand, there is growing informality of labour, income inequality and humanitarian crises.

Against this backdrop, only 50 per cent of working age women are represented in the labour force globally, compared to 76 per cent of men. What’s more, an overwhelming majority of women are in the informal economy, subsidising care and domestic work, and concentrated in lower-paid, lower-skill occupations with little or no social protection. Achieving gender equality in the world of work is imperative for sustainable development.

The United Nations’ observance today, March 8, will call upon all actors to Step It Up for Gender Equality towards a Planet 50-50 by 2030 by ensuring that the world of work works for all women.

In his message, the UN Secretary General António Guterres pointed out that women’s rights are human rights. However, he emphasised that in these troubled times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed. Empowering women and girls, the Secretary General noted is the only way to protect their rights and make sure they can realise their full potential.

UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said across the world, too many women and girls spend too many hours on household responsibilities—typically more than double the time spent by men and boys. They look after younger siblings, older family members, deal with illness in the family and manage the house. In many cases, this unequal division of labour is at the expense of women’s and girls’ learning, of paid work, sports, or engagement in civic or community leadership. This shapes the norms of relative disadvantage and advantage, of where women and men are positioned in the economy, of what they are skilled to do and where they will work.

This, she emphasised, is the unchanging world of unrewarded work, a globally familiar scene of withered futures, where girls and their mothers sustain the family with free labour, with lives whose trajectories are very different from the men of the household.

We want to construct a different world of work for women. As they grow up, girls must be exposed to a broad range of careers, and encouraged to make choices that lead beyond the traditional service and care options to jobs in industry, art, public service, modern agriculture and science.

We have to start change at home and in the earliest days of school, so that there are no places in a child’s environment where they learn that girls must be less, have less, and dream smaller than boys.

This will take adjustments in parenting, curricula, educational settings, and channels for everyday stereotypes like TV, advertising and entertainment; it will take determined steps to protect young girls from harmful cultural practices like early marriage, and from all forms of violence.

Hate speech, bigotry should be condemned Dear Editor, Marking the centenary of the end of the Indian indentureship programme has become a most interesting exercise and more so for the Indian Guyanese community.

Myself, Ravi Dev and Swami Aksharananda were the objects of the usual spewing of hate – originating from Freddie Kissoon’s pathology of self-hatred – in a column published on March 7, 2017.

Whether Kissoon should be given a column to direct personal attacks in the name of responsible journalism is a consideration for his publishers, the Guyana Press Association, and for the Government, which is currently engaged in a nationwide programme to build social cohesion.

At the event held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) which attracted so much media attention the Social Cohesion Minister was present and heard our remarks, as did other Ministers of Government and heads of diplomatic missions in Guyana.

That none of these intelligent and reasoned personages raised any alarm about any of our speeches inciting uprisings or societal explosions in Guyana could be a good indicator that it was an occasion that offered few surprises, if any.

Neither Dev nor I said anything new. In fact, we have been addressing these same concerns for

years – along with leaders like Swami Aksharananda – about Indian Guyanese marginalisation.

Newer ones like the closure of sugar estates at an event that speaks to Indian indentureship is hardly a surprise either.

What arose from Kissoon’s diatribe, however, was a decided fear among some of our community. He succeeded in getting Indian Guyanese to pull back into their corners and to fall silent. It always comes as a surprise that there are people who view Kissoon as an intellectual and moral giant even though his columns amount to little beyond glib name-dropping and personal attacks on anyone he deems unacceptable.

His success in intimidating some in our community into silence, however, needs investigation on this historic centenary.

Are we still ‘bound coolies’ allowing others to define us or are we free to think, analyse and speak for ourselves and about ourselves?

In our divided country, there are agents with their various agendas who want us to retain our bound yard status and to live in fear and silence. These include self-loathers like Kissoon and others who feel that subsuming themselves to a national identity of oneness is the only future on offer.

The Government’s and Opposition’s continuous

message of respect for diversity is set aside as political rhetoric by these Indian Guyanese who might well be correct about this assumption. They feel comfortable with their chosen status which opens doors for them in every area of national life.

Our insistence on national recognition and respect for our Indian heritage and experience, therefore, makes them vastly uncomfortable. The other section of the bound yard includes Indian Guyanese who do understand and agree with our positions fully but remain closeted for fear of reprisal and intimidation by Kissoon and those of his ilk.

So much for our legacy of courage and resistance inherited from the many Indian heroes who fell right here on the sugar plantations in the struggle for justice.

The question for all Guyana is: when will Indian Guyanese be able to live as Indian Guyanese and without fear to think, speak and voice an opinion from their perspective without being condemned as racists?

This branding never occurs when Africans, Amerindians or any other group speaks on behalf of their communities. This is not a cry of victimhood but an observation about the obvious racism directed at the Indian Guyanese population which is designed to keep us voiceless.

I wish to say to those

Indian Guyanese who are fearful of embracing their ethnic identity: we left the bound yard one hundred years ago.

We are free to give voice in music, dance, literature, etc, and free to express ourselves. The next step would be the inclusion of these and other Indian Guyanese expressions on the national stage beyond the tokenism that now exist.

President David Granger in his address at Leonora last Sunday to mark the abolition centenary not only expressed his appreciation for the Indian contribution to Guyana’s development but assured us that we are very much part of a united Guyana.

This even as the Stateowned “Guyana Chronicle” participates in the assault on myself, Dev, and People’s Progressive Party MP Adrian Anamayah who also spoke at the NCC on behalf of Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo.

While this assault directly contradicts the President’s own message of inclusion and respect for diversity, I want to believe that the President is sincere about his message to our community.

This should mean that all hate speeches and bigotry directed at any individual or group should be condemned and should have no place in Guyana.

Behavioural change, determination needed for gender parity – First Lady

egion 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice ) Chairman Renis Morian has accused Permanent Secretary (PS) within the Communities Ministry, Emil McGarrell, of creating confusion within the region, based on alleged advice to the Linden Mayor and Town Council (LM&TC) regarding its Town Clerk Jonellor Bowen. Bowen was recently reinstated after being sent on administrative leave to facilitate an investigation. During the statutory meeting of the Council, Morian told Councillors of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) that he will write Minister of State Joseph Harmon regarding the situation. The Regional Chairman alleged that the PS has advised that the Town Clerk be reinstated while at the same time, is advising the Council to "move another No-Confidence Motion," noting that this is what he has an issue with. Quoting from the March 2 edition of a daily newspapers which he

Morian said that the time has come for the Council work along with the RDC, as he stated that the back and forth is causing confusion and division.

In the letter, the PS had also advised that where the Council finds that there is a continued lack of confidence in the Town Clerk's performance thereafter, that it should take the necessary steps to familiarise itself with the proper procedure to be followed for making a no-confidence motion and proceed accordingly.

The event which was hosted by the Women’s and Gender Equality Commission (WGEC) was discussed under the theme ‘Is Gender Parity Possible by 2030?’

Speaking during the discussions, the First Lady said, “I believe that with behavioural change, determination and serious concerted action we can become a healthier, more educated, more confident and productive society. We can then achieve gender parity in not too distant future.” The First Lady in her address to the women said she added that women need to recognise and address the social and economic factors limiting easy access to education for the development of women and girls in Guyana.

Mrs Granger said that in order for gender parity to become a reality several steps are required. “Our entire population must be educated to understand the longterm implications of gender disparity. We must be bold for change. We must speak up and speak out against

injustice. A comprehensive country-wide campaign should be launched to socialise our women and men, girls and boys so that they recognise and desist from behaviours, which harm us individually, collectively, socially and economically,” the First Lady said. Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning of International Engagement at the University of Guyana, Dr Barbara Reynolds, in her address said that parity begins at home and applies in the daily lives of women. She added that calling for greater unity among women is also part of ending disparity, noting that women’s voices and votes play an integral part in ensuring gender parity.

“We need to care for one another… We can disagree but still respect one another. We can work together, and when we work together it does not mean working against the men, but we can work together because the sisterhood is needed. We

need to assess ourselves as a community…,” Dr Reynolds said.

Also speaking at the event was Member of Parliament and Chairperson of WGEC, Indranie Chanderpaul, said that “All of us, whether we hold positions in the various Ministries, the highest office of the land in political parties, wherever we are, it is our responsibility to begin that discourse and to encourage, wherever possible, the dialogue so that we can work towards 50-50 in 30 years’ time,” Chanderpaul said.

The discussions were accompanied by cultural presentations including spoken word poetry from the Jazz and Poetry on a stool artists. Also present at the event were, Minister within the Public Infrastructure Ministry, Annette Ferguson and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Mikiko Tanaka.

xample Study C: Casting for clinchers for comedy-sketches Forty-five participants who had expertise in comedy-sketch writing, and had been selected to take part in a 10-day comedy festival, were invited to try out a brief online comedy writing task. Asked to generate comedic endings for a brief sketch, the scenario read: “Four people are laughing hysterically on stage. Two of them high five and everyone stops laughing immediately and someone says ____________ .”

Even these experienced participants significantly under-predicted how many endings they could produce if they persisted past their initial four minutes of idea generation time. Regardless of how much prior experience the participants had in comedy writing (ranging from self-identified professional or aspiring professional comedians to amateur or hobbyist comedians) they under-predicted how many new ideas they would be able to generate for the brief sketch if they stuck with it for an additional four minutes.

Sometimes continuing on despite those bumpy potholes is just what is needed for breakthroughs to occur.

In discussing the concept of cognitive “control dialing” in Innovating Minds: Rethinking Creativity to Inspire Change (page 122) we explain: “Our performance of even brief creative ideation tasks (eg, generating alternative uses for a common object such as a penny or a paper clip) is initially supported by more automatic processes (eg, based on memory retrieval). With continued time and engagement in the task, however, we increasingly draw upon our more effortfully persistent attempts at analysis and structured exploration.

We may need to exercise focused deliberate control in order to overcome our tendencies to take the ‘path of least resistance,’ persisting past our ready-to-mind thoughts to find novel combinations and possibilities.”

Why do we underestimate the “creative yield” of persistence?

The studies demonstrated under-prediction of the “creative yield” that might be achieved through persistence across many different types of creative tasks. Why do we show such a consistent failure to fully appreciate the inspirational value of persistence?

One important factor appears to be that there is a disconnect between how something feels to us while we’re being creative and the actual progress we are making. From the inside, it may feel as though we are not fluently coming up with any more new ideas, and we’re rapidly waning. This subjective feeling of disfluency or unease may lead us to underestimate how many ideas we could generate if only we kept at it.

Research shows that people often use how easy it is to do something or how smoothly it seems to flow when judging things. Similarly, when we are searching for creative insights and the process starts to have a bumpy, creaky, uncertain feel, this may lead us to in-

The festival with many meanings

A

s Phagwah quickly approaches, most Guyanese (Hindu or not) are eagerly looking forward to the coming celebrations. For the general public, the festival usually includes numerous Phagwah melas, at which patrons can be regaled by various art forms, such as singing and dancing, and playing Phagwah at public sites, such as the Everest sports ground, or the National Stadium.

Some schools, like Queen’s College, even have their own Phagwah celebrations, such as a show. For the religious, Phagwah includes going to temple, fasting, and, significantly, the burning of Holika.

The story of Phagwah, although probably well Ashley Anthony known by most Hindus, is not necessarily known to the public. There are a few variants related to the festival.

The first, perhaps most popular, one is that of the over-arching triumph of good over evil, and the legend associated with this – the story of Prahalad. The legend goes that Prahalad was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, but his father, King Hiranyakashyap, believed that he, the king, should be worshipped as God, and was furious that his son had become devoted to someone else.

After unsuccessfully trying to wean Prahalad from his devotion, the king ordered that his own son be burnt on a pyre by his sister Holika. Holika had been gifted in that fire could not harm her. However, miraculously, when the fire died away, Holika had been reduced to ashes and Prahalad sat unharmed. It is explained that the fact that Prahalad was unharmed despite all odds is symbolic of good triumphing over evil. This is why on the night before Holi, pyres are lit at different temples.

A less known origin story of Phagwah focuses on the love of Radha and Krishna. In the legend, young Krishna bemoaned that he was very dark, and was upset that Radha was much fairer than he was. His mother, consoling him, told him that he could colour Radha’s face whichever colour he wanted. Taking her advice, Krishna applied coloured pigments to Radha’s face so that she could be the same as he was. Krishna played pranks on the gopis (cowherds) and would apply colour on them and spray them with water from pichkaris. This is the reason why on Phagwah people play with coloured powders and spray each other with water. In some parts of India, a palanquin with idols of Radha and Krishna is paraded through the streets.

Another story of Holi is that of the sacrifice of Kamadeva.

In this version, Sati, daughter of King Daksha, was enamoured with Shiva, and refused to marry anyone else, to the disdain of her father. Once she did marry Shiva, ties with her family weakened, and she denounced herself completely from them one fateful night. Her father had planned a ritual sacrifice and invited all of their family. She rationalised that her lack of invitation had been an oversight, and she decided to go anyways. Upon entering the celebration, she and her husband were ridiculed by her father until, finally, Sati announced that since her father had given her this body, she no longer wanted to be associated with it, and as a result, she entered a deep trance until she ignited. Shiva, upon hearing this news, was furious and then entered deep meditation, renouncing all work. This, of course, threw the world out of balance, so Sati was reborn in the shape of Paravati and began to try to win Shiva’s affection. This proved futile, and so she invoked the help of Kamadeva, the “Indian Cupid god”, who shot a love arrow into Shiva’s heart. Disturbed from his trance, Shiva opened his third eye and incinerated Kamadeva. It is said that on the day of Holi, Kamadeva sacrificed himself for the good of all beings. Later, upon realising his mistake, Shiva granted Kamadeva immortality, but he was made invisible, making him a representation of true love as opposed to lust. To this day, on Holi, people still make offerings to Kamadeva to show their gratitude.

These are just a few of the stories associated with the celebration of Holi. Knowing the meaning behind the things that we do help us have greater appreciation and respect for these traditions. That being said, I hope you all have a great Phagwah and enjoy the festival to its fullest!

Ramjattan made arrest announcement one week ago ...Top Cop only aware of SOCU’s operations after arrests …business community condemns move

cting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine was not immediately aware of the Tuesday afternoon arrest of several members of the previous Government, among others, by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU). The arrests were made just after midday, but around 15:00h Ramnarine said that he was yet to be briefed on matter.

When contacted by Guyana Times about 15:00h, following the arrests of former Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon and former President Bharrat Jagdeo, Ramnarine said he had just gotten out of a meeting and would have to be brought up to speed on the matter.

Dr Luncheon and Jagdeo were among several persons detained in connection with SOCU’s investigation into the Pradoville 2 case.

The Top Cop reminded that SOCU fell under the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

The objective of SOCU, which was established under the previous Government, is to support the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in investigating organised crime.

Ramjattan’s announcement

SOCU’s actions against former Government officials come merely one week after Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan announced that charges would be laid against former Ministers of the previous Administration within a week. He had told sections of the media that SOCU having completed investigations into the operations of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL), would now be seeking to have members of the previous Administration prosecuted.

which were conducted by the State Assets Recovery Unit (SARU) and SOCU, have been used as an intimidation tool against members of the previous Government.

SARU is headed by Dr Clive Thomas, who has made several public pronouncements about the need for members of the previous Administration to be criminally charged. Like Thomas, Eric Phillips, who also plays an integral role, has publicly called for such criminal proceedings.

Tuesday’s move was vigorously condemned by members of the business community and civil society. This newspaper was told by an influential Private Sector player that the move by Government, through SOCU, did not augur well for Guyana’s business climate.

Meanwhile, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has maintained that it is ready to strenuously defend any such actions brought against members of its Government.

Only recently, former Attorney General Anil Nandlall had contended that when applying the same logic, the current Cabinet acted unlawfully when its members approved a 50 per cent increase in their salaries.

He was adamant that the price for which the land was sold was similar to, or compa-

rable with, the price at which the Government sold lands under its housing programme to individuals as well as developers at that point in time.

Nandlall had also argued that, applying the same logic, criminal charges should be instituted against Forbes Burnham’s family, who received five acres of prime land east of Sheriff Street, in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens, given to them by transport by former President Jagdeo.

Nonetheless, Jagdeo has already signalled his intention to file private criminal charges against Government officials on certain matters, including the 50 per cent salary increase situation.

Meanwhile, Nandlall had objected to assertions that the then Government had in fact paid to have removed a National Communications Network (NCN) transmission tower in order to use the land to develop it into a high-end residential area.

He pointed out that the tower was removed long before any work had begun at Pradoville 2.

He highlighted that the tower was removed to facilitate the expansion of the Eugene F Correia International Airport at Ogle, East Coast Demerara.

Bandit killed during attempted robbery

botched robbery executed in the wee hours of Tuesday morning has resulted in the shooting death of one of three male bandits. According to information received, the wouldbe robbers invaded the premises of the Guy Gas Complex at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara just before

02:00h Tuesday.

Reports are that an armed security guard observed the suspicious movements of the three men at about 01:30h, who at the time were making their way into the complex via the western fence.

sponse discharged several rounds at them.

One of the men fell to the ground a short distance away, while the two others ran towards a nearby creek which leads to the Demerara River.

The Police were summoned and a knife and cutlass were discovered at the scene. The dead bandit’s body was discovered with two gunshots wounds and was found in the vicinity of the western fence.

Guyana Times understands that up to late Tuesday afternoon Policemen were still combing the waterways in pursuit of the other two bandits. Up to press time, this publication did not ascertain the identity of the bandit who was fatally shot.

15-year-old charged for killing Top Cop’s brother A

15-year-old Sophia, Greater Georgetown teen, who allegedly killed Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud’s brother was slapped with a murder charge on Tuesday.

The teen appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The teen, who is accused of killing Hemant Persaud on February 19, 2017, was sobbing throughout the court proceedings.

The prosecution is contending that on the day of the murder, the juvenile in the company of another at the Stabroek Market Square, noticed Persaud in a drunken state. The court was further told that the deceased had reportedly just returned from the interior and was seen making “wild” purchases from a vendor, after which he (the

teen) trailed him to the back of the market and attempted to rob him of his valuables. In the process of the robbery, the teen stabbed Persaud.

Guyana Times reported that a woman suspected to be involved in the stabbing to death of Persaud, was arrested but was released since at that time, the Police were unaware of the identity of the man. Persaud remained unidentified for approximately two weeks at the GPHC mortuary, as his family had believed he was in the interior. However, it was not until Police released information seeking the public’s assistance in the identification of the man, that the body was confirmed to be that of Hemant Persaud. Meanwhile, the teen was remanded to the Sophia Juvenile Detention Centre until March 15, when the matter will continue.

Canadian fined for attempting to smuggle birds out of Guyana

Canadian man was on Tuesday fined $140,000 when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, charged with attempting to smuggle birds out of Guyana.

Devendra Narine, 38, admitted that on March 7 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), without obtaining a permit, he attempted to export 10 birds out of the ju-

risdiction.

The prosecution’s case contended that Narine was busted with the birds in the screening area of the airport, when his hand luggage was checked by Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit officials.

When questioned by the authorities, the man reportedly admitted to ownership of the birds, stating that he was taking them to Canada.

When given the opportunity to speak, Narine was heard saying “I love birds; I do not have any kids so that is my hobby…”

The Magistrate then ordered he pay a fine of $140,000 or a default of eight months imprisonment. He was also disqualified from obtaining an import/export permit for a period of 12 months.

Heavy going…

…on heavy oil aphael Trotman’s at it again…and even one of the Government-friendly sites had to pull him up. He seems determined to prove that Jagdeo’s early assessment of him as a featherweight (bantamweight?) in matters environmental – much led natural resources – was spot on. Now normally, his gaffes wouldn’t matter – but with him making policies in the one area of economic activity showing a flicker of life – they could be the difference between national life or death.

His most recent faux pas was on the Hamletian question whether to build or not to build a refinery here. Now your Eyewitness had long pronounced on the unrealism of this possibility – and we know “possibility” unlike “probability” is infinite!! But after dangling the possibility to the populace – maybe to distract them from the collapsing house-of-cards-economy – he was offered a consultant by one of those international bodies trying to help out the clueless-in-Government: like Trotman.

But after the high-price consultant told him what was obvious to everyone with the least familiarity of the oil industry (Clue – Why did Hess close their Virgin islands refinery – largest in the Caribbean – two years ago for which they’re being sued for US$1.5 billion!!??) Trotman opened his mouth once again and plunks his foot in it again! He announced that rather than just take whatever our share of the profits from Exxon in US greenbacks, he was going for the oil. And he’d refine it in either Suriname or Trinidad and “increase our value”. Say wot??

The first goof was to agree to take our share in oil and this ineluctably led him to his second. Why would a country like us – which can’t even fix a cane dumpster much less the boiler of a sugar factory – want to get into contract oil refining and retailing of gasoline, etc?

Trotman should heed the old people’s folk wisdom not to hang his hat where his hand can’t reach.

But worse that that was the revelation he’s just been talking through that hat. Immediately after he made the announcement about our oil producing neighbours refining our oil – and that Suriname had offered! – came the riposte from the Surinamese officials that they can’t even refine the light crude oil we’d be getting from our fields!!

As for Trinidad, that country’s former Oil Minister – invited by Trotman, had already told him they only refine from medium to heavy crude. And it’ll be too costly to retrofit. Trotman’s too heavy. And he ain’t even a brother!

Dump him! …on SARU/SARA There’s an interesting polemic going on between Chris Ram and two of his erstwhile colleagues from the pre2015 election days – Tacuma Ogunseye and Eric Phillips – on the powers being given to GuySuCo’s Chairman Clive Thomas. Back then, Chris Ram could do no wrong – everything he said or wrote was gospel and was duly carved in stone and transmitted to the faithful. Of course, at that time, Ram was dissecting the performance of the Government of the day – the PPP – and from that perspective was in the Opposition benches. The enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that.

But now that the then APNU/AFC Opposition has become the Government and they’ve made some moves which Chris Ram disagrees with – how dare he speak out against them??!! Or more specifically, speak out against Clive Thomas ?? He’s obviously purer than Caesar’s wife and above approach!

That Ogunseye, Philips and Thomas are all executives of ACDA and work out of OP and Philips is an assistant to Thomas at SARA, has absolutely nothing to do with their stout defence! …on AK-47 OK…so the AK-47 being smuggled out of Police Headquarters PROBABLY isn’t from the Police’s armoury.

But isn’t the question really why was it being smuggled out??

ormer Executive Member of the Alliance For Change (AFC), Dr Veerasammy Ramayya, has now thrown his support behind the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) because he believes they have the best plan for the working class people.

Dr Ramayya made his position known shortly after the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, urged a welcoming hand for disgruntled supporters of the coalition Government.

In a telephone interview with Guyana Times on Tuesday, Dr Ramayya maintained that he is an independent politician but has endorsed the current vi-

sion of the PPP despite having criticised some of their actions in the past.

He explained that the coalition Government, which he had endorsed in the lead up to the historic 2015 General Elections, is driving the economy into the ground and making it increasingly challenging to enjoy a decent life.

The politician said he stands with and for the working class people, and will support whichever group he believes has the best plan for them.

No decision made for Suriname’s help with oil refinery – Trotman

ne day after Rudolf Elias, Suriname’s State oil company’s Managing Director announced that that country’s oil refinery is not built to handle the type of oil extracted from Guyana, Natural Resources Minister Raphael Trotman has said that no decision has been taken with respect to where Guyana’s oil would be refined.

Trotman’s statement comes against the backdrop of an interview Elias had with Ware Tijd, an online newspaper in Suriname.

Elias said, “the refinery is not built to handle the type of oil that is extracted in Guyana. Their oil is a much lighter quality. Our refinery was built for the heavy oil that we have landed here in Suriname”.

He noted that even if Suriname does its own discoveries in its deep sea area, the type of oil that will be of the same light quality as in Guyana. “It will also not be processed in our refinery,” Elias adds.

As such, the Natural Resources Ministry in a statement on Tuesday said that during an engagement on March 2, Minister Trotman had pointed out that Government Ministers were informed on February 28 that Suriname had indicated a willingness to do refining for Guyana since their refinery is operating below

full capacity.

The statement added that no decision has been made in terms of where Guyana’s oil would be refined.

According to the statement, Trotman had stated that Cabinet had approved a consultancy whose report will guide the Government on the way forward on the matter of an oil refinery for the country.

It further reminded that the Minister revealed that there had also been some recent overtures from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for the refining of Guyana’s oil, and said he expects that a formal proposal to be made from Trinidad and Tobago in this regard.

Trotman made the point that the current below optimum operating positions of Suriname and Trinidad bring into stark focus the need for Guyana to be careful in considering whether or not to have a refinery.

Further, the release pointed to a question which was asked about whether Trinidad or Suriname would have had to do any retrofitting to be able to refine the grade of oil Guyana will be producing.

“By virtue of this question being asked, and answer given, it is clear that there are still unknowns about the technical aspects of the potential refining arrangement between Guyana and its neighbours.”

been observing the reform of the political party, and is impressed with the improvements.

“Putting everything into perspective, I think the PPP has projected a better life for the working class people than what this Government is projecting. And as such, I am throwing a little support with the ideas that they have… I am very, very proud of Bharrat Jagdeo,

I am very proud,” he exclaimed.

Dr Ramayya said he stands by the criticisms he has meted out against the party in the past but noted that its leaders have also accepted their shortcomings.

In spite of his support, Dr Ramayya said he will not hastily join the PPP. “The time 2020 is far away from now, so I don’t know (if I will join) but I am still working assiduously to help as far as I am concerned the working class people,” the politician explained, noting that many people are already upset with him for being part and parcel of the political force that brought more hardships upon them.

“People in Berbice are crying out. I just came from New Amsterdam and business is completely dead, everybody’s cursing me.

They’re saying that Dr Ramayya ‘you are the one we

voted for and this is what is happening.’ I am taking the curses that is coming down.

People didn’t vote because of Moses (Nagamootoo) or Khemraj (Ramjattan), they voted for me. I am the core of the AFC. But I walked out because of corruption,” he expressed.

Dr Ramayya, a prominent figure in Berbice, began his political career in the 1960s.

After declaring that Berbicians were not adequately represented in the coalition Government, Dr Ramayya resigned from the AFC in 2015. However, after being offered the post of Regional Executive Officer (REO), he remained with the party.

He subsequently resigned “for good” from the AFC in September 2016 after he “got tired” with the “corruption” within the party.

VAT on education

“Government is receiving bad advice” – protester

…as citizens picket Finance Ministry

“T

he Government’s intentions are pure but they are receiving bad advice in terms of policies that are being implemented.”

Those were the words of one protester, who stood unified with others including a number of students from various private educational institutions calling for the imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on private education to be repealed.

Standing outside of the Finance Ministry on Main Street, the group of protesters continued to voice their dissatisfaction in face of the Government’s refusal to repeal the decision.

According to the protesters, this implementation shows great disrespect for the Guyanese people. “We have no political affiliation; we are just standing against this decision because it is not right,” Roshan Khan, Director of RK Security, who was also protesting said.

According to Khan, VAT on education is a way of creating “imbeciles” in a country.

He added that Guyana is losing its youth to the circumstances adding that now more than ever, many young people are migrating.

things and you do mean well but I think that there is bad advice coming where this is concerned”.

Also protesting the imposition, Juan Anthony Edghill Jr, said adding VAT to education is a contradiction by the Government, which once promised to build this country on education.

“I think this is a mistake, I think the Government needs to review VAT on education and put a stop to it because that there are a lot of students around that are struggling already. We need to help our young people to achieve their goals in this country and not hamper that,” Edghill Jr said.

Yet another protester called the act a discrimination against the Guyanese people.

“Mister President, come out and listen to the people,

I travelled the country and I have not met one Guyanese citizen who is happy with what is going on in the country!”

Guyanese countywide are taking a unified stand against Government’s imposition of Value Added Tax (VAT) on education – a service which is a necessity to develop a country and is enshrined in the Constitution as a basic human right.

Since its application, Government’s 14 per cent tax on private education has received widespread condemnation.

Many are calling the decision one that has not been thought through and needs to be urgently revised or repealed.

However, while the cries over the addition of VAT on private education continues to permeate the air,

Government remains unmoved by the calls by students as Finance Minister Winston Jordan has announced that the move has nothing to do with targeting institutions but broadening the country’s tax base.

He said there was no link between the imposition of the 14 per cent tax and the non-cooperation of private schools to pay their share of taxes. The rationale behind the tax on private tuition, however, is founded on the need to broaden the country’s tax base, and to help fund the country’s expenditure shortfall seen in the 2017 $250 billion budget.

According to the unmoved Jordan, Government is committed to the education of all Guyanese, whether it is accessed privately or from public schools.

“Really!!” Buingi exclaimed as he shook his head in amazement. “Dem ‘humman bin a load cane?”

“Yes, Bungi,” said Satiricus. “It’s only after they killed those five fellas at Enmore, they started “cut and load”.

Like you’re doing.”

“Yes,’ nodded Hari. “They used to call it ‘cut and drop”.”

“Well, abee a “cut and drap” fuh dem Bell Loadah,” Bungi informed the table. “But dem machine na nice like ‘humman!”

“Another thing is they used to pay the cane cutter by how much cane they cut,” said Hari. “They used to call it a task.”

“Dem a still do da,” said Bungi glumly. “Dem a pay abee by de ton.”

“So its just like indentureship!” exclaimed Satiricus.

TIP charges dismissed against Cuban businessman A

Cuban businessman was on Tuesday morning freed of Trafficking In Persons (TIP) charges, when Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan said there was insufficient evidence to convict him.

Eladio Pereza, owner of Bollywood Club on the East Bank of Demerara, allegedly trafficked a Cuban female for sexual exploitation between March 1, 2016 and January 20, 2017 at the said nightclub.

Magistrate McLennan in her decision on Tuesday stated that the prosecution failed to prove the necessary elements of trafficking in order to convict Pereza of the offence.

She added that the defendant’s case was coherent and believed the story to be well corroborated by the Virtual Complainant’s statements throughout the trial.

Mahaica farmers upgrade access road Ramsammy’s Ruminations … complaints of deteriorating road fell on deaf ears

R

ice farmers living in the Mahaica Creek, Cane Grove areas on the East Coast of Demerara in Region Five (MahaicaBerbice) came together and upgraded the Huntley Dam after pooling their resources.

The residents made the decision to rehabilitate the road as they were dissatisfied with the manner in which the Cane Grove Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) dealt with their complaints of the deteriorating thoroughfare.

Residents said complaints were made by rice farmers for the upgrading and maintaining of several access dams, particularly the Huntley Dam, but not much was done.

Farmers told Guyana Times that they had to rehabilitate the dam privately since the harvesting period is fast approaching and the dam is the only entrance to farmlands for rice farmers.

As such, a few farmers upgraded the dam levelling, as well as making it more accessible.

The upgrading and maintenance of the dam is the responsibility of the NDC; however, rice farmers said because it is their lack of interest, they were forced to maintain it, hence incurring additional expenses.

“We already have a lot of challenges, our fields were flooded, we have to spend money to pump, more fuel had to be purchased, chemicals for spraying, everyday expenses and now we have to maintain dams ourselves.

Rice farmers however continue to call for the Agriculture Ministry, through the NDC, to assist in mobilising an excavator to assist in the regular maintenance of the Huntley access road, since it’s costing them more overhead expenses.

They have also requested

that the bushes at the side of the access road be cleared, so as to allow the dam to be wider for vehicles traversing. They further explained that crop after crop, they were faced with deplorable conditions, hence creating extra challenges for them due to the lack of proper infrastructure.

here is an ugly orgy of wasteful spending by the A Partnership for National Unity/Alliance For Change (APNU/AFC) that is inconsistent with the economic status of Guyana at this time. High on the list is the 50 to 100 per cent pay increase Ministers gave themselves since June 2015. Junior Ministers in this Government earns a higher salary than senior Ministers in the previous People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government. A junior Minister today earns more than $100,000 than I earned even after being a Minister for 15 years. Not only did APNU/ AFC dramatically increase their salaries, but also their benefits and perks. It is estimated that the increase would amount to more than $1 billion in this term.

This does not include an obscene amount spent on upgrading residences Dr Leslie Ramsammy and offices, because the residences and offices of the PPP President, Prime Minister and Ministers did not meet the standard that APNU/ AFC expects. Is it true that at least two Ministers are paying more than $1 million in house rental per month? Then there is the extraordinary amounts spent on an entirely new fleet of vehicles because the vehicles the PPP Cabinet used were not luxurious enough.

There is massive wastage in employment costs, hundreds of millions each year, for many dozens of advisors and personal assistants, “jobs for the boys”, for the President and Ministers.

APNU/AFC wastes more than $53 million annually (about $275 million this term) to employ advisors and personal assistants for Prime Minister Nagamootoo. Prime Minister Sam Hinds had one personal assistant.

Why the need to spend $175 million annually to rent a “house” to be used as a medical warehouse when the Ministry has a warehouse in Diamond that is less than 40 per cent occupied? What possessed them to spend $1 billion on D’Urban Park just to satisfy their ego? Why did they refurnish the Parliament Lounge to make it luxurious? Why are they spending millions on painting over public buildings green so that they can create a stupid party paramountcy image? Why do they need to spend $7 million to repaint the Founder Leader’s tomb? Why are they spending $38 million to procure new microwaves, refrigerators, wardrobes etc for the Ministry of the Presidency?

Why do they need to travel so often overseas, spending millions?

Why do they have to give scholarships to Ministers?

APNU/AFC’s orgasmic splurging on the people’s money is reprehensible because it is in the midst of a stagnated economy. After vehemently denying that the economy is ailing because of their mismanagement, APNU/AFC now believe that manufacturers are to be blamed for sluggish manufacturing, in the words of Finance Minister Winston Jordan. Perhaps vying for a Nobel Prize in Economics, President Granger demanded citizens get off their behinds and sell plantain chips, sugar cake, egg balls, tamarind ball, pulourie and cook-up in order to stimulate job creation and the economy. Harmon, Jordan and Nagamootoo insist that the cash flow crisis is because of subsidies to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

Mired in a stagnated economy, they now concede that there is a cash flow crisis and have implemented austerity measures.

For example, they advise the public service to recycle envelopes and to be frugal in the use of electricity, water and telephones, etc. The problem is that while public servants are asked to be frugal because APNU/AFC claims a cash flow crisis, APNU/AFC is splurging without any regard for the taxpayers’ money, giving away the people’s money in corrupt deals. APNU/AFC waived more than $5 billion in payments that Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) owed the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).

How do we allow a big, rich corporation to escape a payment of more than $5 billion and then impose austerity measures on public servants? Now Banks DIH is claiming more than $28 billion in refund, based on the DDL waiver. A number of other contractors have been paid off even though they have not met their obligations.

They claim that subsidies to GuySuCo are the cause of the cash flow crisis. But they ignore the $27 billion loss at the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission. They ignore that they have essentially killed SUGAR, one of the most important foreign currency earners in the country and have stagnated the rice industry, which was the second most important foreign currency earner between 2010 and 2015. The bottom line is they have been so busy slurping on the soup that they forgot to manage the economy. The economy is now stagnated, causing a cash flow crisis. Instead of reducing their extravagance, they demand that public servants be more frugal and the people pay more taxes. Their shame is boundless.

Defying the odds:

Meet Midwife Dianne Sandy from Red Lock, Mainstay-Whyaka ...serving above and beyond the call of duty

I

nspiring, motivational, confident and ambitious are words that do no justice to describe 47-year-old Dianne Sandy, a midwife who personifies courage, strength and determination. Sandy has served her community with confidence as a woman of substance and has left a lasting impression on the lives of those she has come into contact with.

A resident of the picturesque Indigenous community of Mainstay-Whyaka, Sandy is a proud independent mother of two. After graduating from the Cotton Field Secondary School in 1984, Sandy started her career as an acting teacher at Lake Mainstay Primary. She spent five years serving her community as a teacher; however, she knew that being in the education sector was not something she was comfortable with; she wanted to do more for her community.

During an exclusive interview with Guyana Times, Sandy explained that while growing up, she always admired nurses. “I don’t know but I love how they look, how they serve and I just wanted to be one of them, so I applied.” In 1990, she was selected by her community to be trained as a Community Health Worker (CHW), an opportunity she was waiting for.

Accepting that position with much optimism, Sandy said she knew she was heading into the career she always wanted and, as such, pursued it with sheer determination and enthusiasm. At first, she said, it was exhausting, and it took a lot of energy from her, but what was satisfying for her were the smiles of joy she brought to members of her community.

During her time as a CHW, she served the Amerindian community of St Denys-Tapakuma, her entire village of Mainstay, and the interior areas of Lima Sands, delivering babies, providing counselling as well as reaching out to the elders. House-to-house visits were routine for her and this blessed midwife said there was never a day she went home feeling tired.

She recalled fondly that during her time as CHW, she would cycle to areas that needed her expertise. One time, she related, someone needed her help and on her way there, while she was riding, she toppled from her cycle and hurt herself. Sandy said that she didn’t turn back, although her clothes were also soiled, instead she went to assist the sick person who needed her help.

“In the past, we didn’t have roads like now: most areas’ health professionals either walked or canoed, but we got the job done. It was a hard task, but rewarding at the end,” Sandy said.

Alluding to the challenges faced while growing up, Sandy explained that during that time, there was a lack of facilities to acquire an education, and she and her siblings had to walk long distances. She was brought up in a strict traditional household. She paid homage to her mother, Isabella Allen, who was a single parent and who cared for four children faithfully, without complaining and always encouraged

her to pursue her dreams.

In 1994, after serving her community unswerving, Sandy applied to be trained as a midwife. She was a successful applicant and, as such, ventured to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge in that field. After two years of rigorous training, she attained a certificate from Georgetown School of Nursing and a Midwifery certificate from the Health Ministry.

One of the main challenges during this period, she recounted, was not being there for her children throughout their primary and secondary education. Sandy said she, however, made the sacrifice and she was happy that her children, Cassia and Swayne Fitzpatrick understood.

“I kept pursuing; there were many times I felt like giving up for the sake of my family, but I always remember my parents telling me a girl needs her education, she needs to be independent and she needs to use her influence to change soci-

ety,” Sandy revealed.

She is presently the midwife in her community and is stationed at the Anna Regina Health Centre.

To date, she has delivered hundreds of babies and is specialised in pregnancy, childbirth postpartum, women’s sexual and reproductive health, family planning, menopausal care as well as newborn care.

“I walk most of the time; yes, I foot it. I believe in walking and since I was small, walking is something we had to do since there were no other alternatives. Rain or sun, I meet to my job,” the midwife explained.

Her advice to persons, especially those living in the interior, is to get an education. Sandy said women should not see themselves as confined to a home, rather they should be all around, occupying prestigious offices. Sandy believes that a woman who is empowered has the ability to change the world with her skills.

he’s a 25-year-old single mother of a vibrant and energetic two-year old, and nothing is stopping Lindener Jessica Brathwaite from working hard and achieving goals while maintaining a busy schedule.

This ambitious young woman presently manages a full-time job as an administrative assistant at a private learning institution, in addition to teaching part-time. She is a sterling example for young mothers across the divide who strive for excellence pursuing life as a career mom, while managing to take excellent care of their children.

A typical day in the life of Brathwaite entails waking up early in the morning, preparing and packing lunches and dropping her daughter, Carlica, off at daycare, just before making the journey to work.

“It’s not that hard for me with one child. I just have to be out the house by 7:20 to meet to work at least by 5 to 8 because of transportation problems,” she revealed during an interview with this publication.

And it’s all about planning and strategising in order to get through the day hassle-free for this hardworking and dedicated mother.

“I prepare everything in the night, so when I wake up I just make snack, pack her lunch bowl, pack my bag and we’re out the door, hopefully by 7:20. If I’m making a snack, I would wake up about 6:15, prepare, wake her up by quarter to 7, take her to school,” Brathwaite explained in giving an insight into her day as a working, single mom.

While she works from Monday to Friday, the dedicated single mother manages to spend quality time with her daughter after work and on the weekends. And believe it or not, little Carlica is presently learning the alphabet and how to spell her name. At the tender age of two, she’s already potty trained and can speak full sentences, all thanks to the love and dedication of her mother.

Brathwaite, who says she enjoys taking care of her baby girl, admits she’s a little overprotective of her daughter at times.

“I don’t like leaving her with people. I

don’t even trust daycare 100 per cent, but she got to go out at some point. It’s slightly challenging but it’s manageable for me.”

Brathwaite is also skilled in computer repairs and would pursue work in that field occasionally. Asked about any challenges she may have, she responded humorously: “I don’t make as much money as I want to. I guess that’s the only challenge for me,” she said with a chuckle. The love and support she receives from her family are overwhelming, and she noted that this was very important in raising a child as a single parent in today’s society.

“My parents, they support me a great lot.

My child’s father also; I get really good support from him,” she said.

Her dedication to raising and providing for her child is the ultimate goal of this mother, who is not of the impression that she is missing out on life.

“I don’t really go out, so I don’t miss the partying. As people would say, when you get children, you can’t go partying. I was never the party type, so I don’t mind. I would tell people, anywhere I’m going, my daughter has to go with me...I like travelling. I’ve never travelled much out of Guyana, but due to the fact that I have to take her everywhere, I can’t just up and leave as I like,” Brathwaite explained.

She plans to make life a bit more comfortable for her daughter, which includes adding a few of life’s essentials. Brathwaite, who presently resides with her father, dreams of one day owning her own home and vehicle as well as travelling to see the world.

“First off, I want to own my own home— working on that presently. I also want to travel the world with my daughter, so she can see different cultures. Somewhere in the mix, I want to buy a car, just so she can have a comfortable childhood like I did. I’m also thinking of becoming a teacher, just so I can be home to spend more time with her when she’s not at school. That’s basically everything in a nutshell,” she noted.

Her advice to young mothers is to put their children first, noting that children need

lots of love and attention.

“You have to enjoy your life, but you also have to remember that you brought a child into the world. That child has to come first. A child needs time, a child needs attention, so just give them attention, show them love and affection. You must also teach them about God. It helps them. Just make sure you put your child first in everything.”

As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, let’s spare a thought for the millions of single mothers across the world who manage to juggle a 9 to 5 job and maintaining a household while taking good care of their children.

espite advancing her academics past the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), 20-year-old Sherreyon Bisram, aka Sherry, of Red Lock Village in Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam), finds herself vending at the Anna Regina Market daily, selling agricultural produce harvested from her family’s farm. For her, this activity has paved the way for future advancement and opportunities; it doesn’t hurt that she enjoys every moment of it.

Bisram, after completing her secondary education at Abram Zuil High School, attended the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) in 2012 where she attained a certificate in forestry. After gaining experience in the field of forestry, she then pursued a certificate in supervisory management through the University of Guyana. Additionally, she has also completed a few courses in Information Technology. However, as she explained, even as she pursued academic achievement, Bisram never swayed from her true calling, farming and vending.

“Since I small I used to help my mom on the farm; during the summer I would find myself going to the market to sell. I find farming very enjoyable and although I studied different fields, my mind is on selling what I produce,” the young businesswoman said.

Bisram, in 2013, began vending full-time from her mom’s stall at the Anna Regina Market and since then, she has discovered the true meaning of independence. This budding businesswoman can be seen from the Market’s entrance, with her huge red and black umbrellas over her neatly packed stall of vegetables and fruits. Many persons have questioned why would a highly qualified girl stand in the sweltering heat under two umbrellas waiting for sales. But, Bisram says she simply enjoys doing it and wouldn’t trade it for anything. She loves be-

ing her own boss and the independence she feels in vending and gardening.

“Once you plant, there must be money and once you get money, you can develop in life. I love selling and I enjoy the independence,” Bisram explained.

She also explained that her fruits and vegetables sell like “hot cakes” and she has her regular customers who cheerfully look for her. She particularly enjoys Fridays, the best day for business. The young entrepreneur also sells her vegetables to residents at Mainstay-Whyaka and would normally ride through the village on her motorcycle on Sundays.

Currently, Bisram sells all types of vegetables, fruits, pepper sauces and cassareep.

The vegetables are all reaped fresh from her family’s Red Lock farm. She also assists other farmers in marketing their produce.

A typical day for Bisram begins as early as 03:00h; she would pack her mother’s vehicle in an effort to reach the Anna Regina Market at 05:00h. There are times when she arrives a bit later, but she usually finishes late in the evening. When she returns home, it’s straight into the garden and with the help of her five siblings, the day ends there.

This inspiring young lady encourages other young people, especially women, to venture into their own businesses and be independent. She urged that more people become involved in agriculture as it would create opportunities for self-development. She also advised persons to keep Jesus close and to ask him for everyday guidance.

Bisram is currently constructing her own concrete two-storey house, and her aim for the next five years is to complete her house and buy her own vehicle, in addition to opening more stalls at the various markets along the Essequibo Coast. Her lifestyle and commitment to vending have defined the true meaning of independence and have also highlighted the benefits of planting a garden.

I

n a sport which dates back to the 1950s in Guyana, with the formation of the British Guiana Motor-Cycle Club (BGMCC) that showcased their daredevilry at the No 63 beach, men have dominated motor racing.

However, over the past four years, there has been the emergence of fiercely competitive female drivers in the Caribbean region and in Guyana, Sharima Khan has acted as the change agent.

With the racing name of “Speed Queen”, Khan has gone bumper to bumper with the men, both young and old, and has managed to drive off with the precious chequered flag, doing something no other female has done for the sport in Guyana to date.

The 21-year-old, speaking of some of her outstanding achievements, stated, “It is a very proud and confident feeling, because all my life I have worked to be where I am now and there is only room for improvement.”

Khan firmly believes once behind the wheel, the issue of gender does not matter since “competition is competition and it is the best driver who crosses the finish in first place”.

Interestingly, the driver said it was not as easy for her to enter the sport as it was for her male compatriots, since she was put under immense pressure to assert her skills as a circuit racer.

However, she is hoping that her success encourages more females to enter the sport, adding that “the hard work is done”.

In giving a viewpoint on why many women do not race in Guyana, she posited, “I think the reason why a lot of females are not in the sport is just because, to me, they are just scared to do it: because, at first, it was a bit hard for me to get in it, because I would have been the first to try after such a long time; there were females that used to race back in the day but not professionally.”

The GuyOil-sponsored driver hopes that women can have a more open mind to racing, since it is “not based on male and female; it is based on what you want and how bad you want it”.

With the focus returning to her life as a racer, the former Covent Garden Secondary School student recollected her most memorable moment on the track when she and her father, Rafeeq Khan, drove together at her first endurance race meet and won

the title. “It was an amazing feeling.”

In looking ahead to her 2017 goals, Khan plans to use the words of encouragement from the Caribbean drivers at the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC) after they saw her exploits at South Dakota Circuit, to fuel her endeavours to tour at the championships which also visits Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados.

In the interim, the racer said she would be go-karting at the GT motorsport facility to tune her skills ahead of the pending racing season.

In closing, Khan voiced that since the sport is quite expensive; the rebirth of go-karting can unearth new drivers and also spark greater interest to attract more fans.

onday marked the 53rd anniversary of the death of the humble housewife, Alice, more famously known as Kowsilla, who met with her demise during a demonstration against the denial of work to labourers at the Leonora Sugar Estate. Tribute was paid to the heroine of the sugar workers, on the West Coast of Demerara.

On March 6, 1964, Kowsilla, along with a group of striking workers, squatted at the factory’s gate in Leonora as they staged a protest against the denial of labour to the estate workers. At the time, they were also rallying for the recognition of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU). The then General Manager of the Estate instructed the driver of a tractor to proceed through the bridge where the demonstration was being staged. The act, which took the protesters for granted, resulted in the death of Kowsilla and 14 persons being injured. Kowsilla, thereafter, became known as the heroine of sugar workers for her sacrificial act against the injustice to estate labourers.

This year, commemorations to honour the heroine, Kowsilla, took place as usual with scores of participants marching from the Leonora Public School to the Anna Catherina Cemetery where she was interred. A ceremony was conducted, during which wreaths were laid at her tomb and tributes were presented by sugar workers’ activists.

Offering words of tribute were General Secretary of GAWU, Seepaul Narine; President of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana, Carvil Duncan and President of the Women’s Progressive Organisation (WPO) among others.

The speakers maximised on the forum to highlight the current series of events which have been affecting sugar workers across Guyana. They alluded to the proposal by the Government to discontinue operations at several sugar estates. The activists noted that severe repercussions are to follow if the callous intentions are executed. In reference to the sacrificial act of Kowsilla, persons in attendance were reminded of challenges faced by the sugar industry in its history. Furthermore, they were encouraged to stand with the community against the projections which will not only negatively impact the livelihood of the sugar workers, but also have a damaging ripple effect on the country’s economy.

Women’s Progressive Organisation

T

he Women’s Progressive Organisation extends warm and fraternal greetings to the women of Guyana on the occasion of International Women’s Day, March 8.

This event which women globally have been observing for more than 100 years now became possible as a result of the struggle of the oppressed garment workers in New York in 1846; who dared to strike against their employers for better working conditions.

Even though they were persecuted, they never faltered and their struggles were taken up by Rosa Luxemburg and Clara Zeitkin, two socialist women who lobbied the delegates of the 2nd International to honour the struggle of these working class women.

The combined actions of two sets of women in two different parts of the world – the USA and Europe made it possible for International Women’s Day to become a universally recognised event.

As we observe this important event, we wish to draw attention to the plight of the sugar workers and their families who are now faced with economic decline and social dislocation. We call on the coalition Government to go back to the drawing board to find a workable solution in order to save the livelihood of thousands of people.

The people of Guyana are under constant pressure. The coalition Government’s promise of a good life for all “is nothing but a BIG SCAM”. Since it came into office it has been taxation and more taxation, it is delving into every facet of life to squeeze money out of the citizens of this country.

It seems as if it is bent on penalising some sections of the population more than others while killing the proverbial goose that lay the golden egg.

We wish to use this occasion to remind the people of Guyana that the significance of IWD must be a constant reminder to us all that nothing comes easy and once we are prepared to stand up and defend our rights, we will be victorious.

The Women’s Progressive Organisation will observe this day by holding a symposium at Freedom House, headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party. The presenters will be the General Secretary of the Party and former President, Comrade Bharrat Jagdeo; Executive Member of the PPP, Comrade Gail Teixeira and General Secretary of the WPO, Comrade Sheila Verasammy. The speakers will focus on the political and economic situation in Guyana and its impact on women.

Guyana Association of Women Lawyers

A

s the women of Guyana and the world observe International Women’s Day, the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers congratulates the three women who created history in our country and for the legal profession with the conferral of the accolade of Senior Counsel. Notwithstanding it being long in coming, the Association records its pride in the fact that in 2017, women who have long been a part of this noble profession, many of whom had and are still ably acquitting themselves, were placed on equal footing with public acknowledgment of excellence.

The appointments of Honourable Madam Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards as Acting Chancellor and Honourable Madam Justice Roxane George as Acting Chief Justice also provide justification for pride among women at the confidence reposed in both Judges to ably hold the mantle of leadership of the judiciary while the necessary constitutional and administrative processes are undertaken. Undoubtedly competent lawyers who later deservedly were promoted to judgeships, these Judges are known to be hard workers, and thus we at GAWL are confident of them satisfactorily proving that the confidence reposed in them is not misplaced. Both of these Judges are also following in the footsteps of role model, leader and mentor, Honourable Madam Justice Desiree Bernard, our Association’s founding President, and also Honourable Mesdames Justices Claudette La Bennett and Claudette Singh; the former of whom is also a former Association President.

This year 2017, the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in April and will embark on a series of activities during the months of April and May. These activities will include essay competitions for secondary and primary school children, activities with youths and adolescents and the elderly, a television programme, seminar on legal topics and a health fair. The GAWL looks forward to partnering with citizens in these activities.

We must celebrate our women in all achievements big or small, nationally or in our communities, as they all enure to the benefit of all of us. We offer our support and extend the GAWL’s very best wishes to Mesdames Justices Cummings-Edwards and George as they embark on the challenge ahead for the justice system for our country.

T

he Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) salutes the women of the world on this International Women’s Day. It is indisputable that women have played an important role in the advancement of civilisation and, increasingly today, they are engaged in all spheres of human endeavour in many countries of the world.

We recall that International Women’s Day emerged out of the struggles of women workers in the United States, who organised themselves to strike for better working conditions, better pay, and voting rights and against women’s oppression and gender inequality. These struggles made us better understand the inseparable links between economic rights and political rights.

Their struggles also show that the concerns of working people the world over are shared between women and men.

The day dedicated to women gained prominence when socialist women workers identified it as a day of action to rally against the First World War. On the same day in 1917, a strike of working women of Russia took place in protest over the killing of two million soldiers in the war which provided further impetus for the history-making Russian Revolution, which occurred in that year and which saw the birth of a socialist country for the first time in the annals of civilisation.

Inasmuch that women have made worthy contributions to mankind’s development and generally made notable strides in their own lives, they must still contend with multifaceted problems – poverty, economic inequality, discrimination in work life, oppression and various manifestations of violence. Today, the heavy burden of austerity affect women – job opportunities are scarce; services they rely on are discontinued or are cut; working women face exploitation; millions live with oppression literally on a daily basis, and yet millions make up the most recent phenomenon of refugees driven from their homes

and countries mainly due to destructive wars of aggression and severe bombardment of their countries.

Apart from work-related problems, the question of domestic violence has risen to the fore and has been condemned worldwide. GAWU continues to condemn such abuses of women as we strongly also condemn the violence meted out to them and their families in conditions of poverty, exploitation and wars.

This year the United Nations’ theme is “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”. We feel this is an achievable objective. And, it is timely to call on the Governments primarily and various organisations to work towards the realisation of this UN theme. Gender equality is possible in our day and will certainly be yet another significant step in recognising the indispensable role of women in the all-round development of humankind.

The women question has acquired greater prominence in recent times and justifiably so. It is now up to us as individuals or through organisations to remove the hurdles and impediments that put a brake on women’s further contribution to society, development and greater achievements.

We are convinced that the women of the world and working women especially remain a formidable force in mankind’s struggles to address unequal relationships and to bring about a just, democratic and better world. With this in mind, we take this opportunity to express solidarity with our womenfolk worldwide and especially to the major mobilisation of women in the USA and other countries on this day.

On the occasion of this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day, the GAWU sends greetings to the women of Guyana, to its women members and greetings also to women the world over, especially those who are in the frontlines, to further the cause of women and for overall social progress and peace.

nder the watchful eyes of renowned tennis coach Bill Adams, Guyanese teenage tennis prodigy Nicola Ramdyhan is developing her skills in Florida, USA. At 19, Ramdyhan, who stands levels above most of her peers on the local scene, is presently harnessing her talent at Bill Adams International Tennis Academy.

She is the first female Guyanese to make it to this platform and the second from the Land of Many Waters after Duanne Lewis created history over a decade ago.

The former student of St Joseph’s and Bishops’ High Schools made it to the Academy after her ability and potential first caught Adams’ attention during the Trinidad & Tobago International Tennis Federation

setting the platform for girls in sport 1 player; this could be a good proving ground for further tennis endeavours. To date, she has discovered muscles she never thought she had. Seriously, she is handling the challenge with the true grit of a young Guyanese athlete when given an opportunity – attentive, gracious and like a sponge, absorbing it all."

And even though her historical progress has gone unnoticed there, for the Sheltez Tennis Club player, she has created a platform that other Guyanese, in particular females, could try to emulate.

Breaking onto the scene at the tender age of seven, Ramdyhan found inspiration mainly in her mom, Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan, who was a national tennis champion.

“I was so impressed with her ability that I assessed she should have won the match; the only difference was that Roch was training five hours per day in Florida.

During Daly-Ramdyhan’s training days at Nonpareil (national racket centre), Ramdyhan would usually go with her and just fool around with her mom and that was how she developed a love for the sport.

Her fierceness came along due to witnessing the hard work her mother displayed every time she trained and competed. Thus, Ramdyhan wanted to follow in her mother’s shadow. She performed her first national duty at 11 and, at present, she is beyond

a door that her mom never had the opportunity to enter.

However, it should be no surprise to those who are acquainted with Ramdyhan that her strong forearm plays, consistent serves and agility have gotten her beyond previous expectations, especially if they witnessed her performance during the Tennis Inter-Guiana Games in French Guiana last year. It was inconceivable; of the Guyanese players, she was unstoppable, unbeatable and superb in her singles and double matches. In fact, she was the only Guyanese player, male or female, to play unbeaten in the tournament as she won her six clashes – three singles and three doubles.

Even though she was outstanding in Cayenne, it is not at the pinnacle of her performances to date, at least, not in her opinion.

According to Ramdyhan, the best part of her career so far was when she participated in the junior Fed Cup in 2012. Although she was the youngest at the tournament, her performance proved that she could match the better players. Not surprising at all since the greatest moments of most champions’ careers are those that went unnoticed to the spectators but are recognisable by the professionals.

Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) President Jamal Goodluck described Ramdyhan as a model of striking tennis with work and someone the other children can take pattern from. He said he was proud of the hard work she has put into her tennis to take her to this point in her journey.

Goodluck further stated that this opportunity in particular was a good one that gave her the exposure that is needed as well as building that bridge for others to cross into the foreign tennis academy. “Bill Adams, a top-level Guyanese coach, has been

helpful in giving input in nurturing our talent. This is the beginning of building a sustainable partnership with expertise to aid the development of our tennis."

Participation at the Bill Adams Academy has seen the rise of Gabriella Bochiero, ranked 115 in WTA; Johnnise Renaud, ranked 26 in ITF world junior rankings and currently number one at Georgia Technical College, and Andrea Ramynse, ranked number one at UCLA and number one for US girls 18s.

And currently Alana Smith, who is ranked number 127 in ITF world junior rankings is attending the Academy.

“So far, the training at the Academy has been intense since the amount of training differs from that in Guyana. I have to push myself further so I can be able to meet to the level of the other players that are in the Academy,” Ramdyhan detailed.

Although she possesses potential to elevate to the highest level, her focus is not solely there as she plans to pursue her studies at university level and play college tennis.

In 2014, Ramdyhan graduated from St Joseph’s High with seven Grade Ones and four Grade Twos at CSEC. Subsequently, she

graduated from Bishops' High with one Grade One, one Grade Two and three Grade Threes at CAPE Unit One and one Grade One, 3 Grade Twos and 1 Grade Three.

She says if she is to have a second shot at life, tennis would again be at the top of her agenda, but from a younger age and playing many more tournaments.

Ramdyhan’s achievement should be highlighted in all areas of Guyana. Hers should be a household name in Guyana. In a sport that is not in the mainstream locally, Ramdyhan managed to achieve great progress.

Today, as the world celebrates International Women’s Day under the theme, “Women in the Changing World of Work : Planet 50-50 by 2030”, <<<Guyana Times>>> is pleased to recognise teenage tennis ace Nicola Ramdyhan.

In a special message for younger girls, Ramdyhan said: “I would like to encourage other girls to take part in any sport, because it helps to improve self-esteem, keep them socially active and it prepares them mentally and physically for everyday challenge.”

W

omen’s rights are human rights. But in these troubled UN Secretary General António Guterres times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed.

Empowering women and girls is the only way to protect their rights and make sure they can realise their full potential.

Historic imbalances in power relations between men and women, exacerbated by growing inequalities within and between societies and countries, are leading to greater discrimination against women and girls. Around the world, tradition, cultural values and religion are being misused to curtail women’s rights, to entrench sexism and defend misogynistic practices.

Women’s legal rights, which have never been equal to men’s on any continent, are being eroded further. Women’s rights over their own bodies are questioned and undermined. Women are routinely targeted for intimidation and harassment in cyberspace and in real life. In the worst cas-

es, extremists and terrorists build their ideologies around the subjugation of women and girls and single them out for sexual and gender-based violence, forced marriage and virtual enslavement.

Despite some improvements, leadership positions across the board are still held by men, and the economic gender gap is widening, thanks to outdated attitudes and entrenched male chauvinism. We must change this by empowering women at all levels, enabling their voices to be heard and giving them control over their own lives and over the future of our world.

Denying the rights of women and girls is not only wrong in itself; it has a serious social and economic impact that holds us all back. Gender equality has a transformative effect that is essential to fully functioning communities, societies and economies.

Women’s access to education and health services has benefits for their families and communities that extend to future generations. An extra year in school can add up to 25 per cent to a girl’s future income.

When women participate fully in the labour force, it creates opportunities and generates growth. Closing the gender gap in employment could add US$12 trillion to global

GDP by 2025. Increasing the proportion of women in public institutions makes them more representative, increases innovation, improves decision-making and benefits whole societies.

Gender equality is central to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the global plan agreed by leaders of all countries to meet the challenges we face. Sustainable Development Goal 5 calls specifically for gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, and this is central to the achievement of all the 17 SDGs. I am committed to increasing women’s participation in our peace and security work. Women negotiators increase the chances of sustainable peace, and women peacekeepers decrease the chances of sexual exploitation and abuse.

Within the UN, I am establishing a clear road map with benchmarks to achieve gender parity across the system, so that our Organisation truly represents the people we serve.

Previous targets have not been met. Now we must move from ambition to action.

On International Women’s Day, let us all pledge to do everything we can to overcome entrenched prejudice, support engagement and activism, and promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Having failed to score 300 in any of their six Test innings in South Africa, Sri Lanka rode Kusal Mendis’s suave 166 not out to a score of 321 for 4 on the first day in Galle. Along the way, Mendis signed up Asela Gunaratne for a sidekick, forging with him a dominant 196-run fourth-wicket stand, of which Gunaratne’s share was 85.

This Galle pitch deserves a first-innings total of at least 400, so although Sri Lanka’s position is strong for now, it is certainly not an unassailable one.

Bangladesh, though, will rue their falling away towards the end of the day. Their first three hours had been disciplined and energetic, the quicks squeezing a little movement from a reluctant surface in the early overs, before the spinners dealt almost exclusively in tight lines and lengths at their initial introduction. Their initial reward for this stretch of good bowling was a scoreline of 92 for 3, but then their pep waivered. The last dismissal came after several hours, not long before the close of play.

That late scalp was welldeserved by Taskin Ahmed, though - he was Bangladesh’s most consistent operator through the day, and it was appropriate that he have at least one scalp to show for his toil.

Mendis’s innings was not without its flaws, but the mistakes came in the early going. He was assured through the middle of the day, and by

the end: sublime. The worst shot had been his first. Mendis flashed at a short ball outside off stump from Subhashis Roy, to send an under-edge to the keeper. Bangladesh were celebrating and he was trudging off when the umpires sought to run a no-ball check, with replays showing the bowler had overstepped. Though visibly relieved, the experience was enough to scare Mendis into early reticence - only 22 came from his first 60 balls.

There had been a little juice in the pitch in the early overs, too - a modicum of sideways movement, and just a hint of zip off the pitch. When this disappeared in t h e

Against the spinners he deployed his favoured sweep and reverse sweep. He glided to a half-century in 85 balls, and rarely failed to find gaps to release the pressure when a few dot balls had built up. This was his third fifty-plus score in five Test innings.

Before Gunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal had produced a long, fruitless stay at the crease. It was not tortured exactly - the ball rarely beating his bat or causing him strife but it was unambitious in the extreme. Why he embraced this ultra-conservative approach is unclear, particularly as he had just clattered 190 off 253 against the same attack in the tour match last week.

Whatever the case, he only succeeded in taking time out of the game. Midway through the afternoon, a sudden burst of energy overtook him: he attempted to flay Mustafizur Rahman through the covers, then tried to slash him a little squarer next ball. The first shot was mistimed, and yielded no run. The second attempt sent a thick outside edge directly to gully, who gobbled up the catch. Chandimal ended with 5 runs to show for 54 balls and 71

minutes at the crease.

The first session had been Bangladesh’s best, as Subhashis, Taskin and Mustafizur delivered impeccable spells to corner Sri Lanka into conservatism.

ollowing 14 year old Orvil Daniels’ performance at the International Tournoi Paul Chillan, Martinique, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Valerie Garrido-Lowe paid the young “Thunderbolt Flour Power” Guyana Under-17 Boys’ National Team winger a visit on Tuesday.

Daniels, who hails from Annai Central, Rupununi, Upper TakutuUpper Essequibo, scored the opening goal in a memorable 3-1 win over Caribbean powerhouse Haiti on Saturday, and was a constant attacking threat during the tournament last week, which also involved Frenchspeaking Caribbean territories Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana.

Daniels, who plays for Paiomak Warriors, was part of the Under-15 national squad that competed in French Guiana in December, and was promoted to the Under-17 set-up because of his impressive performances.

“I feel proud of myself,” Daniels said. “I was very scared at first, but when I played a game I felt excited and I have come home with one goal. When I get older I want to be a national coach as well.” Guyana Football Federation Youth Development Officer and Under-17 Head Coach Bryan Joseph said the GFF was working to give more young talented boys and girls from hinterland communities the chance to reach their potential and to play for Guyana’s national teams.

our players with inter-county experience are among a group of 20 in a Berbice training squad preparing for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter-County Under-15 Tournament scheduled to start next Tuesday March 14.

These players are Marvan Prashad, who played two years (2015 and 2016) for Berbice and is the most experienced player in the training squad and Daniel Dharandat, Romel Retimyah and Abdul

Ramsammy, all of whom represented the GCB President’s XI in last year’s tournament.

The players practiced two afternoons last week at the Albion Community Development Center Ground and will be engaged every afternoon for this week in similar exercises to give the coaches enough assessment time.

The final 14 is expected to be released soon as they prepare to open their campaign against the President’s XI on March 14.

he Hero Caribbean Premier League’s St. Lucia Zouks has launched a new visual and brand identity known as St. Lucia Stars with a logo that is inspired from the home country of the team, St. Lucia.

The new logo and the identity is meant to give the team, St. Lucia Stars, a new bold and vibrant identity. The decision comes from the franchise owners and management who decided to rebrand the name, keeping in mind the line-up of the team’s superstars.

The Chairman of the franchise, Jay Pandya, who leads this change said, “We wanted the identity to represent St. Lucia and anyone who supports the team associates with the traits of being St. Lucian. When we were making the decision to bring this change and we were looking for inspiration, we just had to look within and bring out the spirit of St. Lucia. They are stars in every might and proud to be Born Lucians.” He feels positive and looks forward to this year’s CPL. The design of the logo stems from the home country of the team. Three core elements that form the logo are The World Heritage Pitons, the colour of the flag and the

RHTY&SC to launch special programme for pensioners

he Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, M.S and its over 35 Group on Monday, April 3 are set to launch a special programme directed to assist about 300 old age pensioners in Rose Hall Town area on a monthly basis.

The programme was approved at the Club’s biannual General Meeting which was held on Tuesday, February 28 at the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School and would involve the distribution of refreshments and snacks to pensioners at the Rose Hall Town Post Office as they wait to uplift their monthly pension.

Newly elected Vice President, Mark Papannah stated that several pensioners had approached Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster about the Club assisting them on the first working day of each month.

It was explained that hundreds of senior citizens turns up as early as 5:00h to uplift their pension and the majority of them have to wait until afternoon to do so without meals or snacks.

The eight teams that would join hands with the Over 35 Group are the RHT Farfan and Mendes Under 15, Bakewell Under 17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under 19 and Intermiade, Metro Female and Gizmos & Gadgets Under 21 and First Division.

The Club would provide a breakfast to each pensioner who needs one and arrangements would be

put into place to accommodate at least 300 pensioners. Papannah explained that the programme would be held under the Club’s Tribute to Senior Citizens Campaign.

into place to provide some of the pensioners with food hampers in an effort to make their lives better.

Funding for this monthly project would be obtained by hosting several fund raising events by the eight

cricket teams.

Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster disclosed that the RHTY&SC, M.S would be placing special interest on the welfare of senior citizens during 2017 as it is important to recognise their contribution to the development of Guyana.

Among the programmes that would be hosted and directed to Senior Citizens are tributes to heroes, role model mothers and fathers and Ansa Mcal Region 6 Award of Excellence.

Outstanding senior citizens from the township of Rose Hall would also be honoured as part of the 175th anniversary celebration of the purchase of Rose Hall by 57 freed slaves in 1842.

The hosts resumed their second innings on 213-4 and added 25 before wickets tumbled and they were dismissed for 274, with Josh Hazlewood taking 6-67.

Australia needed 188 to win and, after a promising start, were slowed down by losing regular wickets, including captain Steve Smith for 28.

Their last six wickets went for 11 runs as Ravichandran Ashwin took 6-41.

Guyana set for historic hosting of Pan American Cup qualifiers

or the first time in the history of the Pan American Games, Guyana will host the Pan American Hockey Federation’s Indoor Pan American Cup Qualifying tournament 2017.

Guyana was on Tuesday confirmed as the host nation for the highly competitive tournament for both the male and female divisions prior to the International Hockey Federation’s Indoor World Cup 2018.

The land of many waters was selected based on the recommendations made by the Bid Evaluation Committee with the Board of Directors approving Guyana.

The Games will be played in Georgetown with

the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue being the likely venue for the games.

While the definitive date for the tournament has not been set, the period of the tournament will be between October 14 and 22.

However, the exact dates will be confirmed when the exact number of teams are finalized.

President of the host country’s Hockey Board, Philip Fernandes, said that “it’s an exciting moment for us and we intend to showcase Guyana in the best possible way by making the tournament one of the biggest successes in recent times.”

Alberto “Coco” Budeisky is of the belief that by virtue of having a new country hosting a Pan American Hockey Federation tournament, it will bring motivation for more countries to apply for future events.

In recent times, Guyana has successfully staged tournaments that have involved a number of international teams from countries such as United States of America, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda among others.

The National Gymnasium has also been the beneficiary of praises for the way the facility is being used to garner the development of indoor hockey in the country.

n Monday, the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) held its presentation for top performers at the National Sports Commission (NSC)/ Mashramani Badminton Open and Junior Tournament at the National Gymnasium.

The Director of Sports Christopher Jones and the Executive Members of the GBA made the presentation of Trophies and Medals to the respective winners.

The GBA would like to thank the NSC for their support in the development of Badminton.

The Over-All Winners

are: Open ladies singles: First-Priyanna Ramdhani, Second- Greer Jackson, third and fourth respectively went to Pricilla Moore and Ayanna WickhamWatson.

Open men singles: First-Jonathan Mangra, second-Nicholas Ali, third-Darren Caroenay and fourth-Avinash Odit.

Under 11 girls singles:

first-Kayla Jordon, second-Haily Choo-A-Fat and third-Gianna Ramnarine.

Under-11 boys singles: First-Jonathan Debidin, second- Avinash Ramnarine, third-Jared Bird and fourth-Nikhil Sookraj.

Under-13 girls singles: First-Lesha Singh, second-Sasha Singh, third-Lathika Kandayel and fourth Elesa Sangster.

hapecoense, the Brazilian football team which lost most of their squad in an air crash in November, will play their first international match since the accident.

They face Zulia in the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo in the first stage match of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s main regional tournament.

The match will be Chapecoense’s debut in the competition.

The club only won promotion to Brazil’s top division in 2014.

But they surprised everyone when they reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana

last year.

They were on their way to the first leg of that match when the plane went down near the Colombian city of Medellin; 71 people, including 19 players and staff, were killed.

Only six people on board survived, including three players: goalkeeper Jackson Follmann, defender Neto and winger Alan Ruschel.

Chapecoense have included Neto and Ruschel in their squad for Tuesday’s match.

They hope victory in the Copa Libertadores will help them recover from the disaster. (BBC Sport)
