Aprolific figure in the tourism, housing and water sectors, the Honourable Minister Mohamed Irfaan Ali has revolutionised his ministries, proficiently carried out his duties as an effective minister and is a visionary in the development of our nation. For these reasons, Minister Ali is fittingly chosen as the Guyana Times ‘Person of the Year’.
In an exclusive interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine, Minister Ali narrates his journey to the current offices he holds and his visions for the continuous growth of his country.
Sunday Magazine: What are your academic qualifications?
Minister Ali: I attended Leonora Primary, Cornelia Ida Primary and St. Stanislaus College. I am a Project Management Professional (PMP); I hold a First Degree in International Business; Post Graduate Diploma in International Business; Graduate Certificate from University of the West Indies (UWI) in HR Planning; Masters from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi (India);and I am currently pursuing my PhD at UWI.
Sunday Magazine: What can you recall about your childhood?
Minister Ali: I grew up in Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara. My parents were teachers; my father retired as headmaster from Leonora Primary School and my mother retired as Deputy Chief Education Officer.
My early childhood days were spent in Leonora, but I spent considerable
time in Leguan, Essequibo, where my mother is from. In Leguan is where I developed my skills in farming. I enjoyed catching fish, throwing net, setting seine, swimming in the trench and planting rice. I love farming; it is one of my hobbies. In primary school, I was always part of any debating competition. I love debating. At St. Stanislaus, I participated in impromptu speech, debating and elocution competitions. I was a member of the victorious InterSecondary School National Debating Champions at St. Stanislaus. I credit my teachers who played a vital role in my academic upbringing.
I come from a very rooted political family. My grandmother, Sakina Mohamed, was a woman leader in the PPP and early Women's Progressive Organisation. A lot of the party’s work was done at her home in Leonora. Additionally, my father was actively involved
in politics. Consequently, I grew up in the eyes of great political leaders, especially from Region Three. There are a number of persons who have shaped and influenced my life positively. My parents and grandparents are some of these outstanding role models. My parents allowed us, my older brother and I, the opportunity to freely explore whatever our likes were. They always encouraged us to participate in youth groups and sports. I recall our backyard would have, on many occasions, one-day match being played with two full cricket teams formed by all the boys from the neighbourhood. We would do bush cook, play marbles and get away to swim. We were allowed to explore these things, which are essential to growing up.
Sunday Magazine: Please outline your political journey.
Minister Ali: I became a member of the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) in 1992, and that helped to build a very strong foundation. I was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the PYO, later became the education secretary of the PYO, and in 1997 I was elected in PPP’s regional committee in Region Three. I functioned there as the education secretary and as finance secretary.
Later, I was elected to the party’s central committee at our congress in Essequibo. I was very young – in my early 20s. It was a humbling experience being among the greats, persons who I grew up to admire and respect. This matured me quickly, learning from the stalwarts.
I was then elected as a candidate member in the executive committee of the party. I was given the post of finance secretary, a position I still hold, after which I was elected in the central and executive committees. Presently, I am a central ex-
ecutive member of the PPP. In 2006 I was elected to serve in the National Assembly as a Member of Parliament. Then in January of 2009 I was appointed by former President Bharrat Jagdeo to serve as Minister of Housing and Water. In this sector I give all my energy and strength, never wanting to disappoint the confidence that former President Jagdeo and now President Donald Ramotar placed in me by appointing
This opportunity also allowed me to do something I always wanted to do - to share the full story of Guyana with the rest of the world and to make Guyana an attractive place, not only for tourism but for investment and to help in creating an image that would ensure a sustainable future for Guyana.
I must say the confidence that President Ramotar placed in me was not taken lightly. Of course, jug-
me into this position.
Prior to holding the position as minister, I worked with the Caribbean Development Bank Project Implementation Unit in Guyana at the Ministry of Finance; in the State Planning Secretariat as a regional planner; and before all that I did a short stint at Banks DIH Limited.
After the 2011 elections, the current president asked me to take on the responsibility of Tourism Minister and this brought with it its own passion, its own joy of being given an opportunity to market and promote Guyana, to bring the image of Guyana to the world. I think this ignited a different flame in me; it made me fall in love all over again with Guyana.
gling two portfolios is never an easy task. However, I am blessed with an exceptional team at the Ministry of Housing and Water, and at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce. With the support of these teams, we are able to accomplish a lot.
The journey is still long. There is so much more to get done, but I think we are well on our way on the journey of securing a strong position in the global market for Guyana, our tourism product, and ensuring that our attractiveness for investment remains very visible to potential investors.
Sunday Magazine: What does it take to be an effective minister?
Minister Ali: Being in these positions require a
lot of critical thinking, a lot of visionary thinking; former President Jagdeo has played a very key role in developing an attitude in me that forces me to think critically and in a visionary approach. This approach does not look at things from a popular perspective, but from a practical perspective that generates interest and opportunity, which are critical elements as a minister. As a minister you must be bold in decision-making, you cannot second guess decisions; you have to take leadership, ownership and ensure that you create a sense of commitment to the vision.
The Building Expo and Guyana Festival are two things that many persons doubted our ability to even implement, much less for it to be successful, and in both instances, because of holding on to what we believe and grabbing the moment and building ownership and commitment around that belief, we were able to see the success of these projects. To effectively get the work done, management of time is essential. Prioritising work is very essential also. I have to keep myself and staff motivated,

The Rupununi Low Carbon Livelihoods Project is an impressive environmental project that was implemented to test the models for expanding low carbon economic sectors, while supporting communities and human development at a local level.
It was initiated after the Guyana Low Carbon Development Strategy, which was launched in 2009, with the aim to contribute to the economic development of the Rupununi region while preserving its ecosystems.
The Rupununi Low Carbon Livelihoods Project seeks to strengthen environmentally sustainable, local-level, business led initiatives by providing access to loans to develop community-based enterprises, training community members in business and entrepreneurship and providing them with culturally sensitive and environmentally responsible means of engaging in the growing cash-based economy.
It is a pilot project that aims to illustrate that Guyana can develop while conserving its environment;
it is expected to demonstrate how indigenous and local communities can “directly benefit from low carbon development through enhanced and sustainable livelihoods”.
This was achieved with the establishment of environmentally friendly, economic ventures called Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs). A CBE is an enterprise completely or partially owned or operated by a community or an individual group in partnership with a community.
Through the Rupununi Low Carbon Livelihoods Project, Conservation International Guyana, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana and the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), has established a fund - the Rupununi Innovation Fund - to finance these CBEs.
In order to tap into this fund, each CBE was expected to promote the combined effectiveness of low carbon development, maintenance of ecosystems and good business practices; with the focus on two areas: nature based tourism and agricul-
ture.
The CBEs had an option of several sectors: sustainable agriculture or fisheries, agro-processing, nature based and agro-tourism, agro-forestry, forest conservation, arts and craft, service provision and market-
ing.
All applicants were required to be Rupununibased, develop a bankable business, meet the project’s requirements and receive a reference from Conservation International Guyana.
According to Marcelle Chan-A-Sue, a representative of CI- Guyana, at least 23 CBEs will benefit from the project directly, impacting more than 42% of the regions total population.
Of the expected results, the project has already secured the RIF, recorded the state of food and agriculture in the region, pro-
vided a tourism syndicate, encouraged bankable business plans for CBEs, hosted Stakeholder Business forums, training courses on product development and business management, among other things.
Moreover, based on the work already completed, it was revealed that communities in the region are interested in developing sustainable micro, small and medium enterprises. However, to achieve this they must first have an understanding of local socioeconomic, ecological and market conditions, build lo-
networks for collaboration.
Conservation International is a non-governmental organisation registered and working in Guyana for over 20 years. It seeks to link human development with the conservation of the earth’s living natural heritage.
Building on a strong foundation of science, partnership and field demonstration, CI- Guyana works to empower societies to responsibly and sustainably care for nature, global biodiversity and the well being of humanity.

Determined to effect change in the fields of mental health impairments and psychosocial disabilities in Guyana, Savitri Persaud is a notable individual.
A fourth-year PhD candidate in the Department of Social and Political Thought at York University in Toronto, Canada, Persaud was born in Guyana but migrated to Canada at the tender age of five.
“I was born in Georgetown, Guyana and spent part of my childhood in Moblissa, off the Soesdyke-Linden Highway and in Bellevue, West Bank Demerara before immigrating to Toronto, Canada when I was five,” Persaud said in an interview with Guyana Times Sunday Magazine
Before migrating, her parents were employed in Moblissa’s dairy industry and her father later worked as a cane cutter in Bellevue.
“Even though I was raised in Toronto, Guyana never left me when I moved to Canada. Guyanese traditions, customs, music and foods marked my diasporic experience in Toronto, which was fundamentally shaped by the Caribbean community that I lived in, colloquially known as “Little Jamaica” in Toronto’s west
end,” she pointed out.
According to Persaud, her father never had the opportunity to obtain a formal education; he was working from the age of nine out of necessity. As a result, her father became very influential in her educational endeavours.
“He would always encourage me and my younger brother to take our education seriously and to pursue our goals to the fullest,” Persaud recalled.
Persaud took his advice and at 17 years old pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring in Political Science and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto, Canada.
“It was during my first year as an undergraduate that I met Dr Alissa Trotz, a Guyanese professor who inspired me to make connections between the two spaces that I call home: Toronto, Canada, and Guyana,” Persaud noted.
She was able to accompany Professor Trotz to Guyana in 2009 as a research assistant, which is where her volunteer experience at Red Thread began. Her stint was in support of the Coalition to Stamp out Sexual Violence against Children.
Persaud noted that it
was at Red Thread that she came across many battered women who were counselled at the drop-in centre.
“This forever changed
the direction of my work and prompted me to further analyze the situation of genderbased violence in Guyana. In Toronto, I worked with
people who have developmental disabilities and mental health impairments as well. My work on disability in Canada began to overlap with my research interests and volunteer work in Guyana when I started to take notice of the ways in which mental health, gender and violence were being taken up in the Caribbean, especially the ways in which ‘madness’ and ‘deviance’ can be ascribed to particular bodies,” she stated, making note of several incidents in Guyana.
Particularly, the 2007 murder of Radika Singh, a mentally disabled woman who was perceived as an “old higue” and was beaten to death after wandering into a neighbouring village, served as the main case study in her Master’s thesis.
At 22, Persaud began her PhD with the aim of “unpacking how mental health discourses and associated practices give rise to this kind of violence”. Today, at 26, Persaud is entering the final stage of her doctoral degree as she starts to draft her dissertation.
Her doctoral dissertation examines discourses of disablement, mental health and violence in Guyana. Her research is supported by the Government of Canada through Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Fellowship (SSHRC), Osgoode Hall Law School’s Nathanson Graduate Fellowship, and previously through multiple Ontario Graduate Scholarships.
“In Guyana, the stigma associated with mental health impairments and psychosocial disabilities is immense and pervasive. As a society, we must tackle the stereotypes that we associate with ‘madness’ and move beyond the knee-jerk responses that vilify people with psychiatric disabilities,” Persaud expressed.
She continued, “Mental health impairments are disabilities and the rights of people with disabilities are human rights. We must first recognize this as a society... Doing this work requires a grassroots and multi-sectoral approach in educating people about the rights of persons with disabilities across the spectrum of impairments.”
Working to promote the rights of people with mental health impairments is the “lifeblood” of Persaud’s research. It is her hope that this project will contribute to budding conversation that will positively change the discourse and the ways in which we talk about mental health in Guyana.

Some literary gems are so underutilised, others so well hidden, almost fading into obscurity, depriving man of their import, that it has taken a groundswell of reprinting efforts by pioneering scholars, enterprising publishing houses and concerned governments to clear the overburden, revealing some of the most significant writings of the world and thereby making them readily available now. In recent times, many established and newfangled publishers have jumped on the reprinting bandwagon, all to the benefit of humankind.
In the Caribbean Press’ reprinted edition of ‘Guianese Poetry: Covering the hundred years’ period, 1831 – 1931’, there are two pieces suitable for the season. The original anthology was compiled by N. E. Cameron and this recent reprint carries an introduction by Gemma Robinson. The two poems are ‘Looking Back’ by Egbert ‘Leo’ Martin
and ‘Guiana’ by A. R. F. Webber, both poems are profound writings of exhortation.
Egbert ‘Leo’ Martin was born around 1861 and died in 1890. Alfred Raymond Forbes Webber born 1880, died 1932. Martin was born in Guyana while Webber, born in Tobago, was a naturalized Guyanese. Both were prolific writers whose works served to preserve and to shape Guyanese Literature. Egbert Martin died
young but in his short life and still shorter writing career, he was able to produce a body of writing so significant to cause a stir more than a century later. Martin was writing in the late nineteen century, a Victorian poet who was a master at employing the metrical forms of the time, and, oh, what songs he composed. But he was also ahead of his time for much of his writing is post-modern in concept as he explored various aspects of spirituality.
Webber published his first novel, ‘Those that be in Bondage’, in 1917 and sometime about then he started to dabble in poetry, some poems good enough to be included in the first collection of local verses, ‘Guianese Poetry’ edited by Cameron who explained how he went to great trouble to persuade Webber to release his work for publication in the anthology because Webber was of the opinion that having his best poems appearing first in a collection would affect the eventual publication of his own book of poetry.
In the poem, ‘Looking Back’, Leo wrote that ‘[I] t is good, on gaining every station/In life’s progressive
day/To pause a little/ While in contemplation/We mark the travelled way/…And view each stumbling stone/
while at the same time ensure that enough focus is placed on the sectors to ensure the seriousness and impact of that sector is not lost. Moreover, I have to ensure that excitement is always there. This can only happen with strategic thinking. For example, when we started the East Bank Demerara housing programme many persons did not visualise what is happening there now: a complete transformation. Opening up of the East Bank created a lot of buzz and excitement among my staff. This was a whole new frontier. Now, we are engaged in developing the most recent housing project, Silica City on the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.
Having strategic outlook creates new degree of motivation and excitement and a sense of accomplishment and purpose, which are essential in driving the process of change and engaging the staff to always be proactive and progressive in their thinking process.
Sunday Magazine: How do you deal with criticisms?
Minister Ali: I have developed a very thick skin to criticisms. I have accepted the fact that we live in a very dynamic society where persons enjoy not just criticising but denigrating, abusing and infiltrating in trying to bury others in dirt. However, there are those who are very encouraging and motivating, which gives me the strength every day to continue to work for the
To gather fresh experience for resistance/…It is good to use experience rightly... ‘Tis looking back that gives the future colour’.
In the poem, ‘Guiana’, which is the last piece in the book, Webber waxed rhetorically ‘Wouldst thou be great? /Then grapple to thy soul these primal truths. / Greatness is neither born of intolerance nor schism, /But ‘tis a sturdy growth of open minds!
‘Thou shalt be great/ When thy sons, reared as men who, grappling/In the fierce struggles of the stadium/Fought and fell, scorning all aid but majesty of strength/And into the open world advance/armed only with the shield of merit/and the mighty sword of valour/ And there, combating with the opposing tides of men/ Win their laurels’
So as we, in Guyana, move into a new year, the words of those two writers ought to come in handy as we look back on 2014 and as we look forward to 2015.

betterment of Guyana. I know critics will always be here and I just brush them off to the side; however, if the criticism is done in such a way that can benefit the process and help to improve the process then it is welcomed.
Sunday Magazine: As minister, what are your future plans?
Minister Ali: Once I continue to be in these sectors, I see the exciting alternative highway linking the East Bank and East Coast completed. I see the further expansion of the East Bank housing project. I see the commencement of work on Silica City, and a completely new urbanisation plan for Guyana where suburban location would evolve into its own heights as you are already seeing in Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
In relation to tourism, I see a bright future; one that would ensure Guyana is placed among the top markets for eco-tourism and for investors in this sector would see their investments viable.
In the water sector, I see a water authority that can effectively and efficiently serve people by utilising the best technology.
Kaieteur Falls is an iconic symbol of Guyana, but there are other locations that are similarly magnificent. Take the Rupununi savannahs for instance. We are looking to build a package where iconic Kaieteur is just a foundation. The expansive Rupununi savannahs will become the eco-
capital of the world, where we would have the finest eco-lodges and the best ecobased tourism. That, I believe, would open up great and incredible opportunities for the tourism sector. Furthermore, we want to utilise the potential of the Essequibo River, to bring more sports tourism, and yachting – building a modern marina and an equipped boat yard facility.
Sunday Magazine: Have you thought about a family of your own?
Minister Ali: Juggling the posts bestowed upon me is very hectic. My family and close friends would tell me that I have allowed the job to consume me. Things like spending time with my childhood friends I cannot do because of my dedication to my job. People are not aware of the time consumed by public officials in getting their job done effectively, which reprioritise personal life. Of course I would love to have a family and kids at some point, but the events of 2011 and the responsibilities after then have reprioritise not only my public life but also my private life. A lot of time is consumed in the political process of ensuring a strong and vibrant Guyana continues.
Sunday Magazine: Finally, what is your advice for youths?
Minister Ali: My advice is to stay focused and never be discouraged. Always be confident in what you can do to help your country grow, and by doing this you are indirectly helping yourself. from page 3

AGanesh Singh is an advocate for people with disabilities, especially for the blind. At the age of 13 he was diagnosed with glaucoma, and by 17 was totally blind. However, this did not deter Singh from pursuing his goals. The determined individual has been, over the years, has approached government officials to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities. His most recent successful project is helping blind individuals sit CSEC exams. This project, in its second year and supported by the Ministry of Education, Guyana Society for the Blind and the private sector, has opened up a plethora of selfdevelopment opportunities for blind individuals. Singh is currently a student at the University of Guyana pursuing a degree in Social Work.
Goldie Scott, chief executive officer of Volunteer Youth Corps Inc., has dedicated more than half of her life to youth development work in Guyana. She is the co-founder of Volunteer Youth Corps (VYC) and the current chief executive officer. From 1996 to 2002, Scott was a volunteer with the organisation. She managed and directed numerous youth development projects supported and funded by USAID, UNDP, CIDA, CUSO Guyana, ExxonMobil, CVC/COIN, the Japanese, the Dutch and many other groups and companies. Scott enjoys what she does due to “the great team of professional volunteers and staff that works daily to improve the situation of young people in Guyana”. The humanitarian has been exposed to a diverse range of issues affecting youth through her professional work as well as local and international studies - travelling to more than 12 countries worldwide. She has a degree Environmental Studies from the University of Guyana and is currently reading for a Masters in Applied Community Change and Conservation at Future Generations Graduate School in West Virginia.
Dmitri Nicholson, executive director of Youth Challenge Guyana, has worked with Youth Challenge Guyana for 14 years and has been the executive director for the last six years. Nicholson’s keys areas of focus surrounds ensuring the organisation is reaching its objective of ensuring health, education and livelihood for Guyanese youth and building the appropriate national and international networks. Nicholson said he enjoys what he dies because of his “great team of innovative leaders and seeing the results from hard work”. He believes that volunteering is a critical component of development. His personal philosophy is that we have the power to change any situation in our community if we take the first step. Nicholson has worked on projects that provided technical skills to young Guyanese, improved awareness of HIV and sexual health, supported women's entrepreneurship, empowered youths to prevent conflict in their communities, and provided education to Guyanese children.
Rafieya Husain, who recently compete in the Miss World pageant and walked away with the Miss Caribbean title at the competition, is another exemplary individual who has been effecting change in Guyana. Her charity, Rivah, is a non-profit organisation in Essequibo. It is a strong voice that will echo as a leader in bringing awareness to the early signs of domestic violence, educating young people on early warning signs and eradicate such behaviours by introducing corrective measures to prevent teen related violence which in turn will minimize domestic violence altogether. Husain said that her passion for improving lives and making a difference started from an early age inspired by her late grandfather, Shaffeek Khan. His philanthropic work for the community is one of the reasons Husain was inspired to build this outreach centre in Essequibo for domestic abuse victims. Being a victim herself, Husain main reason for the charity and building the outreach centre is to spread awareness of the initial signs of domestic violence. She chose to build her awareness campaign around dating violence and to educate teens and children in schools so that the percentage of victims can be reduced over time. By focusing on the root cause of domestic violence, Husain hopes to educate youths to be able to identify and mitigate abuse at an early stage.
s we come to the end of another year, Guyana Times Sunday Magazine acknowledges those
who expended their time and resources giving back to society. We send out accolades to these selfless humanitarians
who continue to find ways to help build their nation. This week we feature just a few of these altruistic individuals.
Sperm Whale
SCreature Corner
perm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, are easily recognized by their massive heads and prominent rounded foreheads. They have the largest brain of any creature known to have lived on Earth. Their heads also hold large quantities of a substance called spermaceti. Whalers once believed that the oily fluid was sperm, but scientists still do not understand the function of spermaceti. One common theory is that the fluid— which hardens to wax when cold—helps the whale alter its buoyancy so it can dive deep and rise again.
Sperm whales are known to dive as deep as 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) in search of squid to eat. These giant mammals must hold their breath for up to 90 minutes on such dives.
These toothed whales eat thousands of pounds of fish and squid—about one ton (907 kg) per day.
Sperm whales are often spotted in groups (called pods) of some 15 to 20 animals. Pods include females and their young, while males may roam solo or move from group to group. Females and calves remain in tropical or subtropical waters all year long, and apparently practice communal childcare. Males migrate to higher latitudes, alone or in groups, and head back towards the equator to breed. Driven by their tale fluke, approximately 16 feet (5 meters) from tip to tip, they can cruise the oceans at around 23 miles (37 kilometers) per hour.
These endangered leviathans are vocal and emit a series of "clangs" that may be used for communication or for echolocation. Animals that use echolocation emit sounds that travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their senders—revealing the location, size, and shape of their target.
Sperm whales were mainstays of whaling's 18th and 19th century heyday. A mythical albino sperm whale was immortalized in Herman Melville's Moby Dick, though Ahab's nemesis was apparently based on a real animal whalers called Mocha Dick. The animals were targeted for oil and ambergris, a substance that forms around squid beaks in a whale's stomach. Ambergris was (and remains) a very valuable substance once used in perfumes.
Despite large population drops due to whaling, sperm whales are still fairly numerous.
Sperm whales and giant squid may be mortal enemies. Many stories of deadly battles between these two massive animals exist, and sperm whales have even been seen with suction cup-shaped wounds and remnants of giant squid in their stomachs. (National Geographic)
New Year’s Fun Facts
December 31, 2014 and January 1, 2015
- New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are on a Wednesday and Thursday.
The earliest known New Year celebrations were in Mesopotamia and date back to 2000 B.C.
Most New Year's traditions are believed to ensure good luck for the coming year. Many observe the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck.
Auld Lang Syne, which means “times gone by”, is traditionally sung at midnight on New Year's Eve.
January is named after Janus, the god with two faces, one looking forward and one looking backward.
The early Romans used March 1 as New Year's Day. Other cultures used the autumn equinox or the winter solstice to mark the new year.
New Year's is the time when many people traditionally make resolutions to break bad habits or start good ones.
The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order. Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order. Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9.

From great balls of fire, to possums, grape-eating and animal whispering, here are some of the world's weirdest New Year customs.
Great balls of fire, Scotland
In Stonehaven, Scotland, there is a custom of parading through the streets on New Year’s Eve while swinging blazing balls of fire around.
The tradition is part of Scotland’s Hogmanay celebrations, although its roots trace back to the Vikings.
Graveyard camp, Chile
Locals in Talca, central Chile, like to see in the new year in the company of their dead relatives. Thought to have begun when a family broke in one year to be near their dead father, the town mayor now opens the graveyard after latenight mass and thousands sit surrounded by candles while classical music plays.
Throwing furniture, South Africa
Look out below! It’s the idea of starting the new year afresh that leads residents of Johannesburg, those in Hillsboro in particular, to throw old furniture out of their windows. Italians follow a similar tradition and, not wanting to be lumbered with anything unwanted, conduct an early spring clean by way of their windows.
Possum-dropping, America
In the town of Brasstown, North Carolina, a possum in a
transparent box is lowered over a noisy crowd, in the world’s only known “possum-drop”. It reflects Brasstown’s claim to be “the possum capital of the world”.
Grape eating, Spain
Revellers seeing in the new year in Spain have their mouths full when they try to stuff twelve grapes in - one for each chime of the clock during the countdown.
Cold swimming, UK
Nearly 2,000 people braved the icy water last year in Saundersfoot, Wales, to raise money in a charity swim. The cold is also perfect for curing a New Year’s Eve hangover. Swims take place in the Firth of Forth in Scotland too.
Animal whispering, Romania
Farmers try to hear their animals talk in a ritual which, if successful, signifies not just a Doctor Dolittle gift for communicating with our furry relatives but good luck for the coming year.
Mass kissing, Venice
St Mark’s Square is known for holding not only a big firework display over the Basin of St. Mark but for something far more unusual, a mass kiss-in in the piazza.
Underwater tree planting, Siberia
This is the Siberian custom of cutting a hole in the ice covering Lake Baikal and diving to the lake’s bottom while carrying a New Year’s tree. Note: only professional divers participate.
Dinner for one, Germany
This old British comedy sketch, about a lonely 90th birthday dinner, has been inexplicably embraced by Germans, and is broadcast in many homes during new year festivities. It is up to the butler, James, to play the role of Miss Sophie's departed friends, getting more and more drunk as he does so.
Bear dances, Romania
People wanting to celebrate new year in Romania put on bear costumes and furs and dance at different houses to keep evil at bay.
108 Rings, Japan
In Japan they ring all of their bells 108 times in alignment with the Buddhist belief that this brings cleanness. It’s also considered good to be smiling going into the new year as it supposedly brings good luck.
High Jump, Denmark
In Denmark people climb on top of chairs and literally ‘jump’ into the new year to bring good luck.
Civilizations around the world have been celebrating the start of each new year for at least four millennia. Today, most
New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 (New Year’s Eve), the last day of the Gregorian calendar, and continue into the ear-
ly hours of January 1 (New Year’s Day). Common traditions include attending parties, eating special New Year’s foods, making res-
olutions for the new year and watching fireworks displays.
Early New Year’s
Celebrations
The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox—the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness—heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose. It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current ruler’s divine mandate was symbolically renewed.
Throughout antiquity, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice.
January 1 Becomes
New Year’s Day
The early Roman calendar consisted of 10 months
and 304 days, with each new year beginning at the vernal equinox; according to tradition, it was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome, in the eighth century B.C. A later king, Numa Pompilius, is credited with adding the months of Januarius and Februarius. Over the centuries, the calendar fell out of sync with the sun, and in 46 B.C. the emperor Julius Caesar decided to solve the problem by consulting with the most prominent astronomers and mathematicians of his time. He introduced the Julian calendar, which closely resembles the more modern Gregorian calendar that most countries around the world use today.
As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Romans celebrated by offering sacrifices to Janus, exchanging gifts with one another, decorating their homes with laurel branches and attending raucous parties. In medieval Europe, Christian leaders temporarily replaced January 1 as the first of the year with days carrying more religious significance, such as December 25 (the anniversary of Jesus’ birth) and March 25 (the Feast of the Annunciation); Pope Gregory XIII reestablished January 1 as New Year’s Day in 1582. Tips for a ‘Green’ New Year
New Year's Day is fast approaching, and along with it, all those resolutions. For 2015, why not resolve to make a few simple lifestyle changes that could have a huge impact on the earth?
To help you get started, here are 10 easy "green" New Year's resolutions:
1. Ditch the plastic. Carry a reusable bag with you for groceries, shopping and take-out food.
2. Tuck in your computer at night. Turn off your screen saver and cut even more energy that your computer uses by putting it in sleep mode when it isn't in use.
3. Clean with green. Clean your home with non-toxic and natural cleaning products. Just about anything can be cleaned with white vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of lemon.
4. Think globally, buy locally. Buy locally grown food that's in season. Food that hasn't travelled thousands of miles to your plate is fresher and tastier, and buying local food drastically cuts down on global-warming pollution.
5. Don't be a drip. Fix leaky faucets. A faucet that drips once each second can waste over 8 gallons of water per day and more than 3,000 gallons per year.
6. Turn dollars into sense. Save on energy consumption and your electric bill by plugging out all electrical appliances that are not in use.
7. Ease up on the pedal. Slowing down from 75 to 65 miles per hour will drop your gas consumption by about 15%.

Avril Lavigne may not be ready to tell the world what's wrong with her health, but she has no problem saying what isn't wrong with it. On Tuesday, Dec. 23, the "Keep Holding On" singer took to Twitter to shut down speculation that she's in rehab.
The mystery of Lavigne's undisclosed health issues first began earlier this month, when a fan account, Avril Lavigne Charts, shared a screenshot of a direct message conversation with the 30-year-old pop star. In the conversation, which the singer's rep verified as authentic, Lavigne wrote that she'd been staying out of the spotlight because she wasn't feeling well.
Rihanna took to Instagram on Tuesday, December 23 to show off her unique Christmas tree. In one photo, the "We Found Love" hitmaker posed with her photographer friend Melissa Forde in front of the multitiered tree.
"I feel bad because I haven't been able to say anything to the fans to let them [know] why I've been absent," she shared. "I'm having some health issues. So please keep me in your prayers."

Pharrell Williams, others threaten YouTube with US$1 billion lawsuit
YouTube is facing a war against many musicians like Pharrell Williams, Eagles, Smokey Robinson, and Chris Cornell.
The video-sharing website is asked to take down around 20,000 videos due to lack of performance rights.
Irving Azoff threatens to serve YouTube with a $1 billion lawsuit if the situation is not resolved. The music industry heavyweight represents over 40 artists including the late John Lennon via his Global Music Rights in this major legal battle.
The dispute comes after YouTube announced a new Music Key subscription service to compete with Pandora and Spotify. However, compared to the other streaming services, YouTube is the "least cooperative and the company our clients feel are the worst offenders," Azoff told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's
also their attitude."
"The way fans listen to music is evolving daily," he also said. "The trampling of writers' rights in the digital marketplace without any regard to their contribution to the creative process will no longer be tolerated."
In response, Google lawyer David Kramer called Global Music Rights' le-
gal position "misguided," and argued that the group hadn't even properly identified the works at issue. "It is disingenuous that they can keep their hands over eyes until we tell them the URL,"
GMR attorney Howard King fired back. "They know where it is. We don't want this to become whack-amole." (AceShowbiz)

It's just revealed that Gwyneth Paltrow was once eyed for a prestigious job at Yahoo. According to New York Times, the "Country Strong" star was courted as a contributing editor for Yahoo Food, but the company's CEO Marissa Meyer rejected the actress because she didn't have a bachelor's degree.
"Even though the actress Gwyneth Paltrow had created a best-selling cookbook and popular lifestyle blog, Mayer, who habitually asked deputies where they attended college, balked at hiring her as a contributing editor for Yahoo Food," the NYT article reads. "According to one executive, Mayer disapproved of the fact that Paltrow did not graduate college."

‘The Interview’ is now available for rental online
You can officially watch The Interview online.
Sony Pictures Entertainment announced Wednesday that it is releasing the controversial comedy on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Xbox Video and its own dedicated website, according to Deadline Hollywood. The film will be available for rent starting at 1 p.m. EST. Netflix is also in talks with Sony about streaming The Interview in the coming days, Variety reports.
"We never stopped pursuing as wide a release as possible for The Interview. It was essential for our studio to release this movie, especially given the assault
upon our business and our employees by those who wanted to stop free speech," Sony Entertainment chairman Michael Lynton said in a statement.
"We chose the path of digital distribution first so as to reach as many people as possible on opening day, and we continue to seek other partners and platforms to further expand the release."
The studio and theater chains pulled the flick –which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as entertainment journalists tasks with assassinating North Korean dictator Kim Jongun – last week, after the group responsible for the massive Sony hack threat-
ened moviegoers with terrorism.
But after Sony backtracked, hundreds of indie theaters on Tuesday agreed to screen it on Christmas, as originally planned.
The FBI has determined that North Korea was behind the cyberattack, and President Barack Obama has promised to retaliate.
"This release represents our commitment to our filmmakers and free speech," Lynton said. "While we couldn’t have predicted the road this movie traveled to get to this moment, I’m proud our fight was not for nothing and that cyber criminals were not able to silence us." (PEOPLE)

Five Ways to Fight Gas
Gas is a common problem that can cause bloating and pain. Learn some of the simple steps you can take to reduce your gas and the bloating and pain that often come with it.
Avoid Foods That Are the Worst Offenders
Chances are you have a good sense of which foods make you the gassiest. Whether it’s beans, cabbage, broccoli or beer, try and drop the amount of it in your diet even if you really like the way it tastes. If you’re not sure, try and pay closer attention to what foods you’ve eaten when you’re gassy.
Slow Down Your Eating
Most gas is actually air swallowed during eating or drinking. The faster you eat, the more air you also end up consuming. If you slow down your eating, chances are good your gas and bloating will also go down. Aim to take at least 15 minutes to eat your meal.
Fat slows down digestion. As a result, microbes in your gut have more time to feed on and digest the food in your intestines, which means more gas and more bloating. Less fat in your food means less bacterial feeding and that means less gas.
Temporarily Cut Out Fiber
Fiber is a healthy, necessary part of our diet that helps improve digestion, reduces constipation, and drops your risk of colon cancer. But foods high in fiber are often the worst offenders when it comes to gas. Try cutting back on high-fiber foods for a week or so and then slowly add fibrous foods back into your diet. This will help you find the worst offenders when it comes to gas, while also helping you to find the right balance of gas and fiber in your diet.
Use Simethicone Simethicone is a medication that helps to disrupt bubbles. When it enters your intestine, it helps to consolidate all the small bubbles into larger bubbles that are easier to move through and pass. (www.doctoroz. com)

cooking with coconut Oil this Holiday: eating the Healthy Way
As we approach a new year, let’s make a commitment to eat healthier, starting with coconut oil, to ward off diseases and infections.
With just half cup flour, one tablespoon coconut milk, two tablespoon coconut oil, half tablespoon maple syrup, three eggs, salt, vanilla, five drops concentrate and a dash of cinnamon, you could have 10-12 egg puffs.
In a bowl, whisk together the flour with the yogurt and water. Soak for 8 hours while you preheat oven to 400 degrees. Generously grease a muffin tin and set aside. Use a stoneware muffin plan as liners would not work well with this recipe. Mix the remaining ingredients in the bowl with the soaked flour until smooth. Pour each muffin tin one-third to a little less than half-full. Bake for 18 minutes or until lightly browned.
Turn the pancakes out of the pan after cooling for five minutes. Pancake will sink at it cools. Allow to completely sink before filling it with Ginger Sauce.
Have you ever purchased protein bars? You will probably say yes, but whether the answer is, this is your opportunity to make protein bars in the comfort of your home.
Now follow the recipe below to make approximately 16 bars.
Ingredients:
2 cups nuts or seeds
½ cup flax meal
½ cup shredded coconut
½ cup seed or nut butter
3/8 teaspoon salt
½ cup coconut oil
2 tbsp liquid sweetener
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Method:
1. Place nuts or seeds, flax meal, coconut,
seed or nut butter and salt in the bowl of a food processor.
2. Process until the nuts or seeds are ground into a coarse meal
3. Melt coconut oil over low heat. If the temperature of your home is around 76 degrees, you can skip this step and add the oil directly to the food processor as it will be soft enough to process easily.
4. Add coconut oil, sweeteners and vanilla to processor bowl and process until well combined to form a thick, yet crunchy paste.
5. Press the mixture into an 8×8 square pan (you can be quite flexible here. A 9×9 will work just fine. A larger pan will produce thin bars, while a smaller pan will yield thicker ones.)
6. Place in refrigerator to chill.
7. While bars are chilling, prepare homemade chocolate/carob bar, but don’t harden it.
8. Top bars with the homemade bar. Alternatively, use chocolate/carob chips before melting, or melt and top with those.
9. Place back in refrigerator to chill (if you can wait that long!)
10. Cut into squares and serve.
11. Store in refrigerator.
Remember coconut oil has tremendous benefits: it reverses Alzheimer’s disease, improves type 2 and type 1 diabetes, heals many skin diseases including fungal infections, acne, eczema, keratosis Polaris, psoriasis and rosacea. Additionally, it provides peak performance energy, kills candida fungus, helps with hypothyroidism (increases metabolism and raises body temperature), conditions and strengthens hair, kills many bacteria and viruses, and promotes weight loss.
Hangover Cures: Do They Really Work?
Traditional hangover remedies often aren’t effective, and some of them may actually make you feel worse. Find out what hangover cures will help, and what is too good to be true.
Don't get your hopes up
The only way to avoid a pounding head and queasiness the morning after is to drink in moderation, or to stay away from alcohol entirely. But it’s often easy to overindulge.
Alternating your drinks with water or another non-alcoholic beverage can help you slow down and stay hydrated. If you still wind up with a hangover, you may be inclined to try one of the many supposedly tried-and-true remedies.
However, traditional hangover remedies are often ineffective, and some of them may actually make you feel worse.
Hair of the dog
Even though the thought of a Bloody Mary may appeal to you, a Virgin Mary is a much better choice the morning after. "The worst thing to do is to have another drink," says Charles Cutler, MD, an internist in Norristown, Pa., and the chair of the American College of Physicians' board of governors.
The alcohol may temporarily help your symptoms but could hurt in the long run. Hangovers make you feel horrible because alcohol is toxic, Dr. Cutler explains, and you need to give your body a chance to recover. That morning drink could lead to an even worse hangover the following day.
Greasy breakfast
There’s no scientific evidence that a heaping helping of bacon and eggs will ease hangover anguish, even though many people swear by it. "Greasy food is just going to give you heartburn," says Dr. Cutler, who recommends sticking with easy-to-digest foods such as toast
or cereal. "You want to get calories right back into your system."
Eat light and stay hydrated, agrees John Brick, PhD, an alcohol research scientist and author of The Doctor’s Hangover Handbook. "No specific foods are recommended, although honey sandwiches are helpful to some people," Brick says.
Alka-Seltzer
The famous fizzy medicine has probably been used to treat hangovers for nearly 80 years. In 2001, the company even introduced a Morning Relief formulation specifically for hangovers.
All Alka-Seltzer varieties contain sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda), which will help settle a queasy belly by neutralizing stomach acid. Still, other ingredients, notably aspirin and citric acid, may irritate your stomach after a night of heavy drinking.
Coffee
If you’re a regular coffee drinker, skipping java when you’re hung over may—or may not—be a good idea, Brick says. You may wind up layering a pounding caffeine-withdrawal headache on top of your hangover woes when you miss your regular morning fix.
That said, caffeine narrows your blood vessels and boosts blood pressure. "Both of these may make the hangover worse," Brick says. "If you drink coffee regularly, you might try a very small amount in the morning. Wait 30 to 60 minutes and see how you feel."
Water and sports drinks
Conventional wisdom holds that the dehydration caused by heavy drinking is what makes you feel so sick the next day. In fact, experts actually know very little about what causes a hangover. Potential culprits include disrupted biological rhythms or even alcohol withdrawal, and research suggests that congeners—toxic substances found in alcohol, especially dark liquors such as whiskey—may also play a role.
Nevertheless, replacing the fluid you've lost will likely help you feel a little less miserable. "Juice, water, Gatorade, all those things—they're going to make you feel better," says Dr. Cutler.
Take pain relievers
For women who have PMS-
related pain such as cramping, breast tenderness, backaches, or headaches, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers (NSAIDs) can provide some relief.
These include ibuprofen (Advil and similar drugs) and naproxen (Aleve).
Or you can try over-the-counter remedies specifically aimed at PMS like Pamprin and Midol. These often combine some sort of pain reliever with caffeine.
Exercise
A gentle workout could help you feel better, if you can manage it (and that's a big if).
"Remember: If you've been drinking heavily, you could be a little dehydrated, you could be metabolically behind on your nutrition, and exercise is going to require hydration and nutrition," Dr. Cutler says. "Exercise is always the right thing to do, but I don't think [on] the morning you wake up with a hangover, exercise is what you need." What you really need is rest, he adds.
Sauna
Think you can "sweat out" the
alcohol and other toxins you may have consumed during a night of partying?
Think again. A sauna can cause potentially dangerous blood vessel and blood flow changes in your body. "The last thing you need is to disrupt the normal blood-flow patterns by extreme heat," Dr. Cutler says.
If you're already somewhat dehydrated, excessive sweating can be harmful, and even deadly. Researchers from the Finnish State Alcohol Company's Research Laboratories, in Helsinki, warn that sauna bathing while hung over carries "real health risks," including dangerous drops in blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. Sleep
People sleep poorly after a night of drinking. Alcohol will put you to sleep quickly, but when it begins to wear off several hours later, the withdrawal your body feels can disrupt sleep and jolt you awake. Although sleep deprivation won't by itself cause a hangover, it definitely can make the symptoms feel worse.
If you have the luxury of "sleeping it off" the next day, do so. Your foggy brain and achy body will thank you. "The body’s got an amazing capacity to heal on its own," says Dr. Cutler. In the end, the only surefire treatment for a hangover is time.
Splashy Kitchen Backsplashes for 2015
Kitchen
backsplashes no longer simply protect walls from spills and splatters, a wide array of eye-catching materials like glass, wood, metals and stone make the backsplash the focal point of contemporary kitchens.
Ceramic Tile
While the array of unique — and expensive — tile available today is vast and appealing, you don't need to spend a lot of money to achieve dramatic results. You can use basic subway tile for the backsplash, but laid in an eye-catching herringbone pattern. Design an unusual shape for the edge. Stone: River Rock
Although the most common use of these river rock pebbles is actually shower floors, they can be used creatively as a kitchen backsplash. When you're shopping for backsplash materials, ask the vendor to show you floor tiles, as well. While not every product will adapt well to vertical application, you may hit upon an unusual — and easily implemented — idea.
that is not consistent in colour. And the variances are beautiful but need to be implemented skilfully.
Ingredients:
2 tsp crushed garlic
8 sprigs thyme
Method:
In a large pot over medium fire, heat oil and butter until hot. Add onion and cook until it begins to sweat, about 2-3 minutes.
Next add garlic, ginger, pepper, thyme and basil then cook for about 30 second while stirring frequently. Add coconut cream and water and bring to a boil.
Next add rice, black eyed peas and salt and stir. Bring to a boil once again, lower heat to a simmer.
Cover the pot and cook for 20-25 minutes.
Remove from heat and garnish with chopped scallion.
Ingredients:
12 jumbo shrimp, deveined
1/4 fresh pineapple cut into bite sized chunks or 1 (14-ounce) can pineapple chunks in natural juice, drained
Method:
Heat a non-stick skillet over mediumhigh heat. Holding a shrimp, nest a chunk of pineapple in the natural curve of the shrimp then wrap bacon around the shrimp and pineapple and secure with a wooden toothpick. Wrap and secure all 12 shrimp then add to the hot pan and cook 3 minutes on each side or until bacon is crisp and shrimp are opaque and firm.

Glitter Grapes
Ingredients:
1 lb green seedless grapes or 1 lb red seedless grapes, pulled from the stems and rinsed
1 (3 ounce) package sugar-free gelatin mix, flavour of your choice
Method:
Spread about 1/4 of the gelatin mix on a pie plate or plate of your choice. Rinse the grapes under water, and place a handful on the plate.
Shake the plate gently to roll the grapes in the gelatin, coating the grapes. Place coated grapes into a bowl.
Repeat with the remaining ingredients until all of the grapes are covered.
Place the bowl and let set in the refrigerator for at least one hour, until the gelatin is set. The colder they are the better.
Freeze things flat and stack them. Whether it's soups, stews, or ground meat, the flatter and wider you can get them, the faster they'll freeze and defrost, which not only makes you more efficient, it also improves the quality of the food (the longer something takes to freeze, the more cellular damage it will suffer).
If you want to save water and speed things up a bit when defrosting meat, place your meat on an aluminium sheet tray or skillet. Aluminium is a great conductor of heat and will draw energy from the surrounding environment into your frozen meat much faster than a wooden cutting board or wood or stone countertop. You can cut defrosting times down by about 30 percent this way. It also works on soups, stews, and anything frozen flat. Taste meatloaf, meatball, and sausage mixtures before you shape them. When making meatloaf, sausage, or meatballs, take a small chunk of your mixture and fry it in a skillet (or even faster, microwave it for 10 to 15 seconds) and taste. Adjust seasoning levels in the mixture accordingly.
Pull bananas apart before displaying them in your fruit bowl. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster and go brown quicker. Wrap cheese chunks in aluminium foil and store in the fridge to keep your cheddar fresher for longer and to keep mould out.
To keep mosquitoes at bay, place a fabric softener dryer sheet in your pocket. Mosquitoes are repelled by the scent – and you'll smell like good.

One cold morning
Maurice awoke from his dreams and sat up in bed and listened. He thought he heard a knock at his window; but though the moon was shining brightly, Jack Frost had been so busily at work that Maurice could not see through the thickly painted panes. So he crept sleepily out of bed, and opened the window, and whispered, “Who is there?”
"I am," replied a tinkling voice. "I am the little New Year, ho! ho! And I've promised to bring a blessing to everyone. But I am such a little fellow I need somebody to help me distribute them. Won't you please come out and help?"
"Oh, it's so cold!" said Maurice. "I'd rather go back to my warm bed.” And he shivered as Jack Frost, who was passing, tickled him under the chin with one of the frosty paint brushes.
"Never mind the cold," urged the New Year, "please help me."
So Maurice hurried into his clothes, and was soon out in the yard. There he found a rosy-cheeked boy a little smaller than himself, pulling a large cart which seemed to be loaded with good things. On one side of this cart was painted the word “Love”, and on the other “Kindness”. As soon as the New Year saw Maurice he said, "Now please take hold and help me pull." And
Tdown the driveway and up the hill they travelled until they came to an old shanty.
"Here is where I make my first call," said the New Year. Maurice looked wonderingly at him. "Why, nobody lives here but an old man who works for us; and he hasn't any children!"
"He needs my help," said the New Year. "For grown people like to be thought of just as much as children do. You shovel out a path to his door, while I unload some of my blessings.”
And the little hands went busily at work, piling up warm clothing, wood, and a new year's dinner, the New Year singing as he worked: "Oh, I am the little New Year; ho! ho! Here I come tripping it over the snow, shaking my bells with a merry din; so open your door and let me in."

She handed to each child a package and, in an instant, was gone.
Carl and Philip opened the packages and found in them two beautiful books, with pages as pure and white as the snow when it first falls.
Many months passed and the fairy came again to the boys.
"I have brought you each another book, and will take the first ones back to Father Time who sent them to you," she said.
"May I not keep mine a little longer?" asked Philip. "I have hardly thought about it lately. I'd like to paint something on the last leaf that lies open."
"No," said the fairy, "I must take it just as it is."
"I wish that I could look through mine just once," said Carl. "I have only seen one page at a time, for when the leaf turns over it sticks fast, and I can never open the book at more than one place each day."
"You shall look at your book," said the fairy, "and Philip, at his."
And she lit for them two little silver lamps, by the light of which they saw the pages as she turned them.
The boys looked in wonder. Could it be that these were the same fair books she had given them a year ago? Where were the clean, white pages, as pure and beautiful as the snow when it first
door, and when he saw all the nice gifts the tears ran down his cheeks for gladness; and as he carried them into the house, he whispered: "The dear Lord has been here tonight."
"Where are we going now?" asked Maurice, as they ran down the hill.
"To take some flowers to a poor sick girl," answered the New Year.
Soon they came to a small white house, where the New Year stopped.
"Why, Bessie lives here," said Maurice. "I didn't know she was sick."
"See," said the New Year, "this window is open a little; let us throw this bunch of pinks into the room. They will please her when she wakes, and will make her happy for several days."
Then they hurried to other places, leaving some blessing behind them.
"What a wonderful cart
falls? Here was a page with ugly, black spots and scratches upon it; while the very next page showed a lovely little picture. Some pages were decorated with gold and silver and gorgeous colors, others with beautiful flowers, and still others with a rainbow of softest, most delicate brightness. Yet even on the most beautiful of the pages there were ugly blots and scratches.
Carl and Philip looked up at the fairy at last.
"Who did this?" they asked. "Every page was white and fair as we opened to it; yet now there is not a single blank
you have," said Maurice, "though you have taken so much out, it never seems to get empty."
"You are right, Maurice, there is never any end to love and kindness. As long as I find people to love and be kind to, my cart is full of blessings for them; and it will never grow empty until I can no longer find people to help. If you will go with me every day and help me scatter my blessings, you will see how happy you will be all the long year."
"A happy New Year!" called someone, and Maurice found himself in bed, and his sister standing in the doorway smiling at him.
"Have you had a pleasant dream, dear?" she asked.
"Why, where is the little New Year?" said Maurice. "He was just here with me."
"Come into Mamma's room and see what he has brought you," answered his sister.
There in a snowy white cradle he found a tiny baby brother, the gift of the New Year. How happy Maurice was then! But he did not forget his dream.
Old Joe and Bessie had their gifts, too, and Maurice tried so hard to be helpful that he made all his friends glad because the happy New Year had come. (By Ellen Robena Field, an American children's author in the 1800s)
place in the whole book!"
"Shall I explain some of the pictures to you?" asked the fairy, smiling at the two little boys.
"See, Philip, the spray of roses blossomed on this page when you let the baby have your playthings; and this pretty bird, that looks as if it were singing with all its might, would never have been on this page if you had not tried to be kind and pleasant the other day, instead of quarrelling."
"But what makes this blot?" asked Philip.
"That," said the fairy sadly, "that came when you told an untruth one day, and this when you did not mind mamma. All these blots and scratches that look so ugly, both in your book and in Carl's, were made when you were naughty. Each pretty thing in your books came on its page when you were good."
"Oh, if we could only have the books again!" said Carl and Philip.
"That cannot be," said the fairy. "See! They are dated for this year, and they must now go back into Father Time's bookcase, but I have brought you each a new one. Perhaps you can make these more beautiful than the others."
So saying, she vanished, and the boys were left alone, but each held in his hand a new book open at the first page.
And on the back of this book was written in letters of gold, "For the New Year." (By Emilie Poulsson, 1853–1939, was an American children's author)
The Passing of the Year
My glass is filled, my pipe is lit, My den is all a cosy glow; And snug before the fire I sit, And wait to feel the old year go. I dedicate to solemn thought Amid my too-unthinking days, This sober moment, sadly fraught With much of blame, with little praise.
Old Year! upon the Stage of Time You stand to bow your last adieu; A moment, and the prompter’s chime Will ring the curtain down on you. Your mien is sad, your step is slow; You falter as a Sage in pain; Yet turn, Old Year, before you go, And face your audience again.
That sphinx-like face, remote, austere, Let us all read, whate’er the cost: O Maiden! why that bitter tear? Is it for dear one you have lost? Is it for fond illusion gone? For trusted lover proved untrue? O sweet girl-face, so sad, so wan What hath the Old Year meant to you?
And you, O neighbour on my right So sleek, so prosperously clad! What see you in that aged wight That makes your smile so gay and glad? What opportunity unmissed? What golden gain, what pride of place? What splendid hope? O Optimist! What read you in that withered face?
And You, deep shrinking in the gloom, What find you in that filmy gaze? What menace of a tragic doom? What dark, condemning yesterdays? What urge to crime, what evil done? What cold, confronting shape of fear? O haggard, haunted, hidden One What see you in the dying year?
And so from face to face I flit, The countless eyes that stare and stare; Some are with approbation lit, And some are shadowed with despair. Some show a smile and some a frown; Some joy and hope, some pain and woe: Enough! Oh, ring the curtain down! Old weary year! it’s time to go.
My pipe is out, my glass is dry; My fire is almost ashes too; But once again, before you go, And I prepare to meet the New: Old Year! a parting word that’s true, For we’ve been comrades, you and I -I thank God for each day of you; There! bless you now! Old Year, good-bye!

TAURUS (April 20May 20)
Consider an unexpected change to be an adventure. Trying to fight progress is tiring and unrealistic. With your ability, any variation to your plan could work to your advantage.
Sharing time with family or friends will bring you peace and joy. Make a resolution to be more attentive and affectionate in the new year. Romance will enhance your personal life.
(May 21June 20)
Your energy is lagging. Take time for personal pleasures in order to rejuvenate. A frantic pace will negatively influence your health. Do whatever it takes to eat properly and sleep well.

Meddling in someone else’s relationship is asking for trouble. Regardless of which side you favor, you risk alienating someone or hurting his or her feelings. It’s best to keep your opinions to yourself.
Do your best to wrap up assignments or business responsibilities. Career matters may have taken a back seat to family events lately, but you need to get back on track and pursue your goals.
You should make the changes that you’ve been considering. Painting and redecorating will spruce up your surroundings, and exercise and a healthy diet will get you in tip-top shape.
Don’t be discouraged if your plans are taking longer to fulfill than anticipated. As long as you are moving forward, you are on the right path. Stick to your dreams, hopes and wishes.
Your priority is to get ahead throughout the upcoming year. Expand your goals and follow through with your plans. Think big and make things happen. Consider starting your own business.
Concentrate on whatever job you are given. If you become distracted or lose focus, mishaps will occur. Work on one concept at a time, rather than trying to multitask.

Apple issues first automatic bug update for Macs
Apple has sent out its first automatic security update for Mac computers as researchers warn about new bugs.
Previously Apple has released security patches through its regular software update system which requires user approval.
The latest bugs were so severe it felt it needed to get customers protected immediately, the firm said.
"The update is seamless. It doesn't even require a restart," Apple spokesman Bill Evans told Reuters.
The Mac bugs were mentioned in security bulle-

Ftins issued last week by the Department of Homeland Security and the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute.
It identified dozens of technology companies, including Apple, whose products might be vulnerable.
The vulnerability targets a component of its OS X operating system called the network time protocol (NTP) which is used for synchronising clocks on computer systems.
The protocol is a global method of synchronising time over a network and has previously been exploited by hackers.
Microsoft has been offering automatic updates for security flaws for some time.
Apple developed technology for automatically pushing out security updates two years ago but has
Apple leak confirms new iOS version
ive versions of iOS 8 have now been released and major update ‘iOS 8.2’ has also been seen on video ahead of its expected launch early next year. But in the meantime a significant number of iPhone and iPad owners are still affected by WiFi, Bluetooth and battery issues. But it appears Apple has a pleasant surprise in store: an unexpected new iOS release.
The predominantly reliable MacRumours has detected Apple devices running ‘iOS 8.1.3’ visiting its website.
It explains: “The number of hits from iOS 8.1.3 remains low, numbering just a few dozen in total

While there are more likely to be faked identifiers in the general pool of web visitors, the clear trend of increasing usage and visits coming from Apple’s own networks have historically been reliable indicators of Apple’s development work.”
At this stage it is unknown what iOS 8.1.3 might contain or when it will arrive and given the time of year it seems unlikely it would appear before January. That said numerically iOS 8.1.3 would
Spider Dress protects your personal space bubble
he population is booming. The world is getting more crowded. Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht is pairing technology with fashion to keep others out of your personal space bubble.
Her robotic Spider Dress, a concept she debuted in 2013, is now more than a prototype. It was made using 3-D printing techniques and comes complete with an advanced Intel chip, sensors and LED lights to create a fashion statement that ends in an exclamation point.
It starts with the white, skeletal bodice and legs, which were customized using a 3-D printer.
Proximity sensors, as well as a respiration sensor embedded in the dress, keep tabs on the surrounding environment and the wearer’s breath rate. Collected data is fed to a computer, run by an Intel Edison chip. If the sensors detect another person nearby and if the wearer’s respiration begins to increase, the computer program causes the spidery legs to extend.
“Approach the wearer too aggressively and the mechanical limbs move up to an
attack position,” Wipprecht told CNET.
Black shells embedded in the dress resemble eyes. LED lights, also wired to the sensors, flash a warning sign if a person comes on too strongly. Conversely, the eyes can glow steadily as a welcome, if a person approaches cautiously.
Wipprecht plans to show off her Spider Dress in January at CES 2015. (Discovery)

Sony Pictures
Entertainment is threatening to sue Twitter if the company doesn't suspend accounts containing links to hacked emails.
The film company's lawyer David Boies has sent a letter to the social network demanding that accounts sharing information be shut down.
US website Motherboard has posted a letter sent from Boies to Twitter.
In it one user is singled out, Val Broeksmit, who tweets screenshots of Sony emails as @ BikiniRobotArmy.
with developers for testing but this should not come as a surprise. Apple very rarely seeds minor point releases with developers, instead pushing them out to address specific bugs or performance issues. Larger releases require more testing with iOS 8.2 notably paving the way for Apple Watch apps as it contains the new Watch API.
Whatever the end result, however, users will be hoping for a more significant release than iOS 8.1.2 which merely addressed a ringtone bug while also deleting any ringtones users had purchased outside the Apple store. (Excerpted from Forbes)
In the letter to Twitter, Sony's lawyer says Twitter should "comply with all future requests with regard to any other account holder seeking to disseminate the Stolen Information via Twitter".
The letter also asks the network to send a copy to @ BikiniRobotArmy user Val Broeksmit, advising him to stop publishing stolen information.
It continues: "If Twitter does not comply with this request, and the Stolen Information continues to be disseminated by Twitter in any manner, SPE will have no choice but to hold Twitter responsible for any damage or loss arising from such use or dissemination by Twitter." (BBC)

Let’s take a look at the origins of some of the world's most cherished New Year's traditions — from the familiar to some customs you may never have realized could provide good fortune in the year ahead.
Auld Lang Syne
The song literally means “old long ago”. The work by 18th-century Scottish poet Robert Burns has endured the ages and spread beyond Scotland and throughout the English-speaking world. The song is about “the love and kindness of days gone by, but...it also gives us a sense of belonging and fellowship to take into the future”, according to Scotland.org, a website of the Scottish government.
Kissing at midnight
Perhaps you'll have a New Year's Eve kiss that was the defining moment in a sweeping love story — like the one Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan shared in the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally. Or maybe you'll pucker up with the person who happens to be standing next to you because, well, that's just what people do. But why? Not doing so will ensure a year of loneliness, according to tradition. The custom is said to date to ancient European times as a way to ward off evil spirits.
Black-eyed peas
the meal, but what’s inside. Black-eyed peas is said to symbolise coins and eating them insured economic prosperity for the coming year.
Colourful undies
In some Latin American countries, including Mexico and Brazil, it's believed the colour of your undergarments will influence what kind of year you'll have. Tradition holds that yellow underwear will bring prosperity and success, red will bring love and romance, white will lead to peace and harmony and green will ensure health and wellbeing.
12 grapes
In Spain and some other Spanishspeaking countries, one New Year's custom is to eat 12 grapes for 12 months of good luck. But here's the catch: to bring about a year's worth of good fortune, you must start eating the grapes when the clock strikes midnight, then eat one for each toll of the clock.
Molten lead
Instead of reading tea leaves to tell the future, some in Germany and Austria read the molten lead. Here's how: Heat up some lead in a spoon. When it's melted, pour the molten lead into cold water. The shape of the lead will tell you what's ahead of you in the coming year (although the shapes are open to interpretation).
Fireworks
ting them off a central part of New Year's celebrations. It's believed the noise scares off evil spirits and misfortune. The Chinese observe the lunar new year, which this time falls on 19 February 2015.

In Guyana, it’s a tradition to eat cook-up on New Year’s Eve. However, it’s not about

While you're working on your New Year's resolutions, just be glad you're not a dog. If your resolutions fail, you have to wait just one year to do it again, but for a dog, that's seven years. The pressure to succeed is enor-

mous, especially for highachieving dogs. I know such a dog, whose 25 resolutions, in six important areas, may inspire you to aim higher.
Personal Hygiene:
I resolve to floss my teeth several times a day, whenever I get hold of the cat's tail.
I resolve to take a bath once a week, dry myself on the grass and perfume myself by rolling on the dead squirrel in the backyard.
I resolve to lick myself regularly in a private place, such as the middle of the living room.
I resolve to do something about my bad breath: neutralize it with my body odor.
Diet and Exercise:
I resolve to be more picky about what I eat. From now on, no leather
I resolve to drink six bowls of water a day, even if I have to stand on two feet to reach the flush handle.
I resolve to be more choosy about which balls I run after. From now on, no tennis balls or golf balls -only meatballs.
I resolve to never run after sticks, unless they happen to be cheese sticks.
Finding Purpose in Life:
I resolve to leave my mark on the world. Or at least on the carpet.
I resolve to aim high and shoot for the top. No fire hydrant is too tall.
I resolve to stop barking up the wrong tree -- and start sleeping under it.
I resolve to have big dreams. They make sleeping worthwhile.
I resolve to allow other
creatures of the house to get plenty of sleep, too. I fully support my owner if he decides to put the cat to sleep.
Service to Others:
I resolve to fetch the paper for my owner more often, even if the darn paper boy keeps throwing it in the neighbor's yard.
I resolve to help my owner with my superior sense of smell, barking loudly to warn him whenever the neighbor takes off his socks.
I resolve to take my owner for long walks, pulling him in many directions so his entire body gets exercise and he realizes the benefit of driving me around in his car.
I resolve to stick my head out of the car window, so everyone will know who is in charge. And other dogs walking on the road will see me and realize how much they too can achieve.
Education and
Enlightenment:
I resolve to devour at least one book a week. And tear through a magazine every day.
I resolve to absorb as much wisdom as I can from the tall white machine in the kitchen. It knows the secret of getting humans to put lots of food in it.
I resolve to figure out why, when I'm so warm and friendly, my owner still tolerates the cat.
Moral Values:
I resolve to save myself for that special dog and not get tempted by my owner's leg.
I resolve to do unto others as I would have them do unto me, as long as "others" does not include fire hydrants.
I resolve to care about underprivileged dogs, the ones without a roof over their heads, without food in their stomachs, without a chauffeur to drive them around.
New Year’s Resolutions
When I thought about the evils of drinking in the New Year, I gave up thinking.
You know it's time for a New Year's resolution to lose weight when you step on a talking scale and it says, "One at a time, please!"
A man asks his friend for a cigarette. His friend says, "I think you made a New Year resolution to quit smoking." The man says, “I am in the process of quitting. Right now, I am in the middle of phase one." "What's phase one?" "I've quit buying."
The neighbour
Every time the man next door headed toward Michaels's house, Michael knew he was coming to borrow something.
"He won't get away with it this time," muttered Michael to his wife. "Watch this."
"Er... I wonder if you'd be using your power-saw this morning," the neighbour began.
"Gee, I'm awfully sorry," said Michael with a smug look, "but the fact of the matter is, I'll be using it all day."
"In that case," said the neighbour, "you won't be using your golf clubs, mind if I borrow them?"
Wedding Gift
Sato and Jeeto were preparing wedding cards for their son at the printers.
Jeeto was not very good at English so she asked the printer to help her. After the printer had presented her with a draft, she quickly pointed out that the "RSVP” was missing.
The printer was surprised by Jeeto's knowledge and asked her if she knew what it meant.
Jeeto started to think and after much thought he replied, "Vait! I remember! I remember! RSVP!! It means "Remember, Send Vedding Present!"
Secrets to a Happy Life
A woman walked up to a little old man, looking almost like Santa Claus, rocking in a chair on his porch.
"I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she said. "What's your secret for a long happy life?"
"Well, honey, I smoke five packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "Five packs of cigarettes!!!"
"I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise."
"That's amazing," the woman said. "How old are you?"
"Twenty-eight," he said. Great News
The newlywed wife said to her husband when he returned from work, "I have great news for you. Pretty soon we're going to be three in this house instead of two."
The husband started glowing with happiness and kissing his wife said,
"Oh darling, I'm the happiest man in the world."
"I'm glad that you feel that way because tomorrow morning my mother moves in with us," she replied.
No More Kids
A census taker walked up to a woman who was sitting on a porch. After introducing himself, he said, "How many children do you have?"
The woman answered, "Four."
The census taker asked, "May I have their names, please?" The woman replied, "Eenie, Meenie, Minie, and George."
Confused, the census taker said, "May I ask why you named your fourth child 'George'?"
"Surely, because we didn't want any Moe."
Deodorant Issues
It was a really hot day at the office due to a malfunction with the air conditioning system. There were about twenty people in close quarters and everyone was sweating, even with a fan on.
All of a sudden, people started to wrinkle their noses at an odour passing through the air. It was the most hideous smell anyone had ever smelled.
One man, popping his head out of his cubicle said, "Oh, man! Someone's deodorant isn't working."
A man in the corner replied, "It can't be me... I'm not wearing any."
Wife's Surprise Visit
Resolving to surprise her husband, an executive's wife stops by his office.
As she walks in unannounced, she finds his secretary sitting on his lap. Without hesitating, he begins to dictate a letter:
"And in conclusion gentlemen, budget cut or not, I cannot continue to operate this office with just one chair."
Machine to impress a Girl
An old guy (not in the best of shape) was attempting to work out at the gym when he spotted a sweet young thing... He asked the trainer who was nearby, "What machine in here should I use to impress that sweet thing over there?"
The trainer looked him up and down and said, "I would try the ATM in the lobby."
Blind Date
After being with her all evening, the man couldn't take another minute with his blind date.
Earlier, he had secretly arranged to have a friend call him to the phone so he would have an excuse to leave if something like this happened.
When he returned to the table, he lowered his eyes, put on a grim expression and said, "I have some bad news. My grandfather just died."
"Thank heavens," his date replied. "If yours hadn't, mine would have had to!"
