T
he Development of the Tourism Industry can bring prosperity to Guyana and address some of the numerous economic and social ills that beset the country. I think all parties agree that there is a high level of unemployment among the youths of the country. We also accept that idle hands are the devil's workshop; so it should come as no surprise that there is a high incidence of crime among the young. We are all aware that the majority of our educated young people are quickly recruited by foreign countries that offer a better quality of life; so we are left with those who are less educated and less skilled and more difficult to be gainfully employed. We at Vacation Guyana believe that the development of the Tourist Industry is a viable solution to improve the education and skill level of the youths, create employment and reduce crime. Vacation Guyana is dedicated to building awareness and encourages investment in Tourism by the Government and the Private Sector. In the 1960's, Guyana was the breadbasket of the Caribbean; we had the highest literacy rate and our standard of living was high; Barbadians were coming to Guyana looking for work. Today Barbados is a prosperous country with a much higher standard of living than Guyana; leaving politics aside, the main driver of this prosperity is their vibrant Tourism Industry. After the fall of the Berlin wall and the dismantling of the Russian Federation, Cuba could no longer rely on help from Russia. Cuba turned to Tourism. Today, Cuba is prosperous. In Zambia, Nature tourism contributes substantially to the local economy. Each person spent about $1100 US generating a Direct and indirect impact of nearly $2300 US in GDP; $1300 US in wages and
In Guyana, we hear the same old excuse repeated over and over again; Guyana does not have sandy beaches and blue waters, therefore we cannot have a Tourist Industry. I beg to disagree and over the next few issues I will present information on possible ways forward. Vacation Guyana will continue to focus on building awareness by disseminating information on the Tourist Industry that exists. Our publication gets fully distributed within a week of printing. We hope to have future publications printed and distributed before the end of the month. You can view our distribution list on page 7 of the directory. The online version is also available at www.vacationguyana.gy. In addition to advertisements from tourism companies, we also try to include information that is relevant and useful on a day to day basis; in this way we give you a reason to keep the publication for reference throughout the month. Our Directory of Hospitality entities has been updated with a number of new entries. This month we are
introducing a new service that will be of particular interest to Hindus. On the back page, you will find a section entitled “October 2013 – Hindu Calendar of Events”. The information has been well researched and is being presented in brief. Hindus will find it a useful guide and for some, it provides an explanation of some of the rituals. Religious tourism is a reality in Guyana. Many Hindu Guyanese living abroad do not have access to temples or information of this type and do come to Guyana to observe some of these special religious days. This Hindu Calendar of Events will become a monthly feature of Vacation Guyana. In subsequent issues, I will also hope to identify some of the temples in Guyana where the rituals are being observed. At this time, I would like to take the opportunity to invite interested persons from the Christian and Muslim faiths to send me a similar calendar of their religious practices and I will try to find space and publish. Please try to be as brief as possible and use a similar format. We welcome feedback and contributions from the public. We will print letters and submissions that present ideas on tourism for our country.

Rockstone Fish Festival – promoting community- based tourism
T
he Rockstone Fish Festival is an annual event which sees participation from Guyana's top s p o r t f i s h i n g m e n . This event is usually scheduled around the end of October or the beginning of November. However, almost all through the year, except for extreme raining seasons, fishing is possible. Some of the more known fish species found are the Peacock Bass or Lukunani, Hymara, Arawana, Pirana and the endangered Arapaima, world's largest fresh water fish (trapping not allowed). Rockstone is a small Amerindian community located on the bank of the Essequibo River in Region Ten. It was AIRpoint for knownCOMFORTABLE in those parts as a transit the Daylight and Garnett Company to CONDITIONED shuttle balata from the Rockstone landing WEIGHING IN THE CATCH onto theROOMS Demerara River to Georgetown. Sport fishing enthusiasts from Guyana and around the world, would assemble each year to fish or camp out with the many spectators who arrive to watch the event or take part in other activities that include fish cooking and fish catching contests, along with swimming, log rolling and kayaking contests. The festival was inaugurated September 2006, and has become a major event in Guyana's tourism calendar, offering prizes, trophies, and best of all, bragging rights. The Fish festival is an opportune chance to have Guyanese, in particular, experience indigenous culture. The 300 residents of Rockstone would normally clear areas for overnight camping, install washroom facilities and build small guesthouses for visitors. Tours are also offered to nearby Gluck Island, home to Guyana's National bird, the Canje Pheasant and other unique species of fauna, and Golden Beach, a small sand covered island with excellent fishing opportunities.

October 3-6 "Advancing Productivity through Innovation, Modernisation and Expansion" Guyana's largest Trade and Investment Exposition – GuyExpo began in 1995. This event which showcases locally produced goods and services, became an annual event in 2004 and is now the longest sustained exhibition in the Caribbean. In
that year, the organizers noting the growth and interdependence of international trade opened the exhibition to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and other regional exhibitors. GuyExpo is now a national event and takes a permanent place on the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce's Annual Calendar of Events. This trade and investment activity is usually held in September. This premier exposition and trade fair offers business associates the opportunity to meet, network and negotiate with international companies and establishments, as well as showcase their skills, talents and creative works. This annual event provides a platform for both local and foreign businesses: importers, exporters, retailers, wholesalers. It fuses together a wide cross section of producers of handicraft, furniture, garments, jewellery, and horticulture, pharmaceuticals, tourism, information technology and
most of all our culture. This ideal setting provides the opportunity for businesses to increase their competitiveness and efficiency and foster growth. GuyExpo is undertaken as a partnership among the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, GO-INVEST and the private Sector; while exhibitors, franchise holders, game operators and entertainers play a major role in the overall success of the event. The GuyExpo Planning Committee and Secretariat under the stewardship of the Honourable Minister Irfaan Ali M.P. supported by Co-chairman Mr. Derrick Cummings, the planning Committee and Guyana Manufacturing Services Association have established a plan of action which will result in GuyExpo 2013 being one of the best ever. Theme: Advancing Productivity through Innovation, Modernisation and Expansion This year's theme is consistent with Guyana's successful macro-economic strategy, prudent policy implementation and continuing efforts to expand opportunities for sustainable investments.

HEALTHY & FITNESS How the Gym Can Make You GAIN Weight
Y
ou've been working out for months—so why is the number on the scale going in the wrong direction? Many people actually gain weight despite going to the gym, according to a recent survey by Forza Supplements. The U.K.-based company polled 1,000 people on their diet and exercise habits and found that 26 percent of the people surveyed actually packed on pounds after they started going to the gym—although, to be fair, some people included in this group only went to the gym once a week, while others went daily. While the irregularity of exercise may be a factor in why many of the gym-goers struggled to maintain their weight (let alone drop a few pounds), Forza reps say there's likely another factor at work, as well: People who work out tend to overindulge in foods before and after their sweat sessions, according to the company's press release. “People think working out harder can make up for eating unhealthy foods,” says J.J. Virgin, nutritionist and author of The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days. “But you can't compensate for bad eating with exercise.” Think about it: One milkshake can clock in at 780 calories, which would take 72 minutes of jumping rope—a pretty vigorous exercise—to burn off (see more junk food to exercise conversions).

Of course, eating well (and enough) is key to burning fat and building muscle, says Virgin. But working out doesn't grant you permission to gorge on whatever you're craving, either.
The Fastest Way to Lose 20 Pounds or More
If you're watching your waistline, make sure to eat pre- and post-workout foods that will boost your overall performance and help your muscles recharge, says Virgin. But you should also be wary of how much you eat—even if it's a healthy snack—since Your goal weight may seem far off, but consuming too much of any food makes it harder for your body to burn it off later, don't sweat it. "The more you weigh, she says. Once you've cleaned up your diet and learned healthy portion sizes, exercise will help you maintain or decrease your weight. the more calories you burn during easier workouts, like brisk walking," says Holland. So rather than doing killer workouts from the get-go, small, consistent efforts will help you shed pounds early on—and seeing those quick results will motivate you to stay on track. Your challenge? Preventing injuries.

"Excess weight makes exercise naturally harder on your joints," says Tom Holland, author of Beat the Gym. That's why it's important to start with basic body-weight exercises (or "training movements," as he calls them), which put less strain on your body and help you learn proper form. Once you master these fundamental moves, your joints and muscles will be prepped to tackle moredifficult exercises with ease. continued on page 6

ENDURANCE-BUILDING CARDIO Slow and steady isn't just for high school sweethearts; it's the key to developing endurance, a crucial building block at this weight-loss stage. "Sustained, moderate-intensity cardio helps teach your body to utilize fat as fuel so that over time you begin to burn more of it," says Holland. "Such activity also slowly introduces your joints to impact, reducing your risk of getting injured." Two days a week, do 30 to 45 minutes of easy to moderate-intensity cardio (you can walk, use an elliptical machine, hike, bike, or swim--anything that keeps you going for at least 30 minutes). Mix up your routine--bike one day, hike the next--to train different muscles and beat boredom.
SMART BITES Enhance your weight-loss efforts by following these diet tips from Leslie Bonci, R.D., M.P.H., director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and coauthor of Run Your Butt Off! Take Note A study found that those who kept daily food logs lost twice as much as those who didn't. Many people lowball how much they eat--seeing it all in black-and-white can be a reality check. ADVERTISE WITH US!!!
