The less than 1% - a couple dozen really This country is on the move -shore base, gas-to-shore, deep-sea drilling, underwater mapping, and suddenly the home of people talking an altogether new language. By Guyana’s standards, this is the dawn of its space age, where it is supposed to shake off the cobwebs of its ancient ways and rush into the 21st century. So far, despite all the leadership noise and expectations of citizens, it has been more of a stumbling forward, with the hazy and secretive relaying of what this society stares at for its destiny. Guyana is a textbook case of Rip Van Winkle stirring, with a lot of catching up to do, after his 20-year holiday. Like chronic drunks ‘coming to come’ (as Guyanese are fond of saying), we are slow and anemic off the blocks. We have hundreds of years in the gutter and cesspool to overcome in a fraction of the hours that race by us, leaving us choking in their dust. The clock is not waiting on us, and the big, muscular, well-wired (connected), well-endowed (capital), and wellfavoured (politically) Guyanese are way ahead of every other Guyanese, who make up almost all of the rest of the population. They are on the move with gigantic strides, and much assistance from political leaders, helping them to tower above their less fortunate countryfolk. The latter is left behind, all 99.99 percent of them. This is what was feared, what is becoming more obvious daily. It means that we have overnight transformed into what is a bona fide less-than-one-percent society. Is this what Guyana has turned into with all this wealth, after all the noise? We are talking of 0.001 percent who are the Guyanese Rockefellers, Getty(s), and J.P. Morgan(s), who benefit enormously from a direct line to helpful political leaders, who partner with them to make things right for each other: the business magnates prosper and so, too, do the politicians who boost them. In this greedy grab for the treasures of this land, the rest of Guyana is left far behind, where the great bulk of citizens has always been consigned. The less-than-one-percent elite (globally recognised as super elites, about 20 here)) is democratically spread and are feasting on this country’s natural resources banquet. Whenever they need a plot of prime land, all they have to do is say how much and where, and it is done, it is theirs. A concession, a customs wharf, clearance to carry on with what capitalism demands? Consider it done again! These are the people capitalizing on the first fruits of Guyana’s blessings, and they are less than a thousand Guyanese: oil subcontracts, mining licences, lucrative business partnerships, upstream, downstream. This is the local story of commercial and political conspirators having a grand time. Life is sweet and rewarding. But not for the other 749,000 Guyanese. For sure, they have jobs and contracts, and scholarships, and access, but let’s get real: the real big deals for the big boys (less-than-one-percent patriots) goes to a handful of comrades and cronies (many criminal), financiers and front men (for leaders) to cash in on the Great Guyana Bonanza. Some of their capital is dirty, but the Americans don’t prioritise that anymore. Remember what the EU spoke of in its post-elections report. Money talks, and the less-thanone-percent people gave big millions, which added to billions. Today, these few reap incredible rewards. Meanwhile, the smaller Guyanese in the middle don’t have a chance. They are locked out due to lack of capital, contacts, contracts that never go their way. Also, the small Guyanese, voters, get some chickenfeed held out as gold: GOAL, virus relief, tax relief, pension relief, a well here, some wellness talk over there, with a few schools and clinics and roads thrown in to sweeten the pot. And in each one of these helpful endeavours, the lesser fry (political and bureaucratic comrades) makes sure that they get their milliondollar piece of the billions doled out. All this confirms what is present and growing stronger in Guyana -a master money race. It is the mindboggling prosperity for that special group of Guyanese, the less-thanone-percent people.

Govt. must take urgent action to prevent the health system from becoming unmanageable Dear Editor, Each day in Guyana, the number of recorded positive cases and deaths arising from the coronavirus gets higher and higher. Up to last Saturday, there were 273 reported cases with 7 deaths and 32 persons in Intensive Care. It is just a matter of time before the hospitals which have limited ICU beds become inundated with cases. Within the past 18 days, there have been a staggering 88 deaths due to the coronavirus! This is an extremely high death toll for this period. The Ministry of Health, in its releases, emphasises the fact that almost all of these deaths are of unvaccinated persons. While that is so, they are still deaths of persons, persons who matter to others. I do urge everyone to be vaccinated; however, since it is proven to reduce the severity of the virus and avoid the dreaded hospitalisation and death. It is important to note that it does NOT prevent someone from contracting the virus hence the need to continue to take every precaution such as wearing masks when in public, maintaining social distancing from those out of your household and

observing basic sanitising practices. The spiralling number of these cases in Guyana is alarming and is no doubt due to the presence of the delta variant, which has been described as being as contagious as the chicken pox. Having regard to the number of cases and resulting deaths, it is imperative that the Government put in place immediate social restrictive measures to curtail the spread of this virus. There are no such measures present currently and each day the death toll rises. It is not enough to urge vaccination and to have no measures to prevent the spread since even the vaccinated are being affected. The unrealistic “curfew” must be replaced by a curfew starting at an early hour to prevent the gathering and mingling at the packed bars and restaurants. The creeks and entertainment places should be closed. The Government has allowed the reopening of cinemas, which is as mind boggling as its decision to reopen schools. Both the cinemas and schools should be closed. With regard to the latter, we have seen the cases of

teachers dying in the United States, of hundreds of children being infected with the virus and schools being forced to close. While it is laudable that the Government has secured vaccines for the children over the age of 12, how can a decision to reopen for the unvaccinated children below 12 possibly be justified. The mere fact that 17 schools had to be closed in one week due to teachers contracting the virus is in itself a cause for concern. The Minister of Education nonchalantly dismissed this by saying, shockingly, that “every country in this world who has found a solution to get their children back into the classroom has had to deal with very similar issues.” One cannot simply point to the fact that children need to be back in schools without being cognisant of the situation prevailing in the country at the time. This reckless decision needs to be rescinded so that we can protect our children. Guyana is the only country in the region, which has reopened for physical learning and the government has to be held accountable for their actions in so doing. Simply put, there is absolute lawlessness with

regard to any “measures” in Guyana to prevent the spread of this virus. A classic example is the recent opening of the Payless Shoe Store at the MovieTowne Mall. There was a promotion, which was so reckless at the time of this pandemic, which advertised a discount to the first 50 persons waiting in line. This “line” turned out to be more than 50 persons crowded together without any social distancing whatsoever outside of the store. The store continues in the same vein of recklessness and disregard of the safety of persons at this time with another advertisement urging persons to “celebrate” their opening by winning free movie tickets at MovieTowne to the first 20 persons in line on Saturday and Sunday. This store and MovieTowne indeed should be closed as a result of such callous disregard for the safety and welfare of persons. I urge the Guyana Government to put immediate social and business restrictions in place before the health system becomes unable to handle the number of cases of this virus. Yours sincerely, Stephanie Isaacs

Opposition politicising vaccines, endangering public safety, including children’s and own supporters Dear Editor, I am grateful that I can get back into meaningful writing. Now, the first issue that I would like to address is the present debacle between the Government of Guyana and a slew of trade unions, and instrumentalities of the PNC, over the vaccination policy of the ruling administration. They are up in arms against the government’s policy to have the nation vaccinated against the dreaded coronavirus disease. That motley crew is of the opinion that this vaccination, instead of being a lifesaving measure, would kill people. Quite an insane view when you analyse it in its entirety; yet, it has gained traction in some quarters here, to the point of inciting violent protests. The rallying call by the ragtag bunch is “My body, My choice” in total defiance to the lifesaving vaccination programme promoted by Government. So, it seems that there is likely to be an impasse in the coming days and months ahead between government and opposition.

Now, the “My body, My choice” has nothing to do with a vaccine, rather it sounds more like campaign rhetoric of the Opposition, because while they are making that political statement, people are dying of coronavirus, which is worrying to all concerned. You cannot make bland statements of “My body, My choice” and a blunt no to the vaccine when you have no alternative solution to the pandemic. It is certainly irresponsible and foolish to make that assumption to a dying nation. So, the question remains why make those statements when you have no substantive alternatives? It behooves me to conclude that their motive is to create fear and instability in our country, something that is wicked and subversive to say the least. At this juncture, I must bring this pertinent fact to the attention of the Opposition. Fact number (1): it is the Government’s responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its citizens at all times. Fact number (2): it is

also the responsibility of the Government to ensure that the nation’s children are educated, two basic and relevant duties of any government. Therefore, no opposing forces should interfere with those sacred responsibilities of the ruling party. In that regard, I have viewed the Opposition’s conduct as wicked and dangerous because APNU politicians have all taken the vaccine, including Granger himself, yet they are preying on the fears of their gullible supporters saying otherwise. It is now pellucid, that the PNC is still looking here and there in every conceivable corner to make trouble ever since it lost the election. Our nation’s kids have been out of meaningful instruction since March 2020, many of whom can be seen all over the place - without a face mask, of course – flouting all COVID-19 protocols, they are not dying from the virus. However, since the call has been made for them to go back to school, the asinine assault looms high on the Opposition’s agenda that

they will suddenly die from the virus. If this is not the epitome of stupidity and backwardness, then what is? What I dare say without fear of contradiction is that there seems to be a move on to generate a gene pool of illiterate and backward children in our country to whom they can call upon in times of protest. But that is not going to happen because of the erudite and forward-thinking government that is in place. The government cannot be derailed in its effort to bring this pandemic under control. In closing, I call upon all Guyanese all across this great country to repudiate all statements and actions of those opposed to the vaccination programme. COVID-19 is not a political matter, neither is it a joke. The pandemic is real, a disease that has sent many of our friends and loved ones to the great beyond, therefore, it is our bounding duty to at least cooperate with the Government and bring this deadly disease to its final end. Respectfully submitted, Neil Adams

PPP/C evergreens making a comeback Dear Editor, I am concerned. I hesitated before, gave some time and space; but can’t anymore. I detect already the troubling, the devastating, taking firm hold of this sickly, poor little rich boy of a land. The Orin Boston killing drove me to this place, as I recognise an early return to the bad ole days of PPP/C reign. Because this is Guyana, the evergreens of yesterday, would be considered good by many enraptured citizens. We have had street executions, which can’t be called nothing else. I don’t think that any names should be needed, especially that one right near to the official residence of the head of state. If it is business as usual for His Excellency and cohorts which could include intellectual authors - then all the little people can do is watch and learn. Grin and bear in silence, too. I would have thought that, given this insult to the beloved president (and his family), no matter how high the murderous trail led, perhaps would be accounted for, accommodated. I certainly did not expect the kind of

accommodations at work on this one. Then, with the execution (what else is it, please?) of Mr. Boston, there is the resurrected jumbie of excessive (to put kindly) or extrajudicial (more bluntly) force by the police. I always thought that SWAT ops were for extraordinary situations. Whether it was or wasn’t, it is frightening. Because I am aware of another situation of approx. a month ago, where a home was invaded, people stripped, guns placed at heads, and a child left traumatised. Nobody died. It is in the broader police domain, but not yet in the public one, so I stop. My point is: could there be the beginnings of the old pattern? I can’t wait to see what the police professionals come up with for public consumption. Not the real police, but the police PR pros around for just such circumstances. Guyanese should brace themselves against fainting from the farces that are sure to surface. One did already. It was named ‘confrontation.’ Next, in one short rollicking year, there has been a tiny handful of enormous

overseas drug busts. It is back to the future of yesterday with police investigating, tape tampering, men disappearing, official pretending. I appeal to my fellow Americans, including the much linguistically garlanded American Ambassador, we could use something other than this criminality of democracy. Come to think of it that would be free and fair, too. I recognise wasting breath, since there are different priorities nowadays, with money launderers and drug terrorists, and terrorist financing all ignored, back burner issues. Last, there is one that never fully disappeared, which is noise pollution. It is peaking just in time for holidays. The police will have a lovely Christmas, as business promises to be bright. As for the neighbours, they have prayer. Heck, I just remembered: churches closed. To these, I add friendly colluding auditors, and understanding compliant courts. In sum, PPP golden oldies, aka democracy’s collateral. Sincerely, GHK Lall

I will stand with Minister Manickchand when the time is right Dear Editor, I would like to take a moment to answer the question “Where are the voices in solidarity with the Education Minister?” posed by Attiya Baksh. My answer to the question is that it takes a special person to be counted as a Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.). Editor, please inform the interlocutor that I will stand with the Minister when the time is right. However, please know that I will stand in

solidarity when the learned Minister produces evidence of condemnation of those who burnt the school buses during last elections. I will stand with the Minister when there is a public apology to the Parliament and to the exSpeaker of the Honourable House for leading the disregard of orders to remove a member who chose to ignore directions, and, to top it off, yelling “Rape” when police officers attempted to perform their duties. I will be

the first to stand in solidarity when the Minister queries the leadership that shouted down President Granger when he was addressing Parliament. However, while I ponder my support for the Minister, these are some questions that come to mind. Why should I stand in solidarity when the children cannot play in schoolyards cleared of grass and overgrown bushes, and when the schools need a paint job, fences sit in (Continued on page 6)

‘Whistling Wretch’ - a student’s poem celebrating our Amerindian brothers and sisters Dear Editor, My name is Priyanka Ramdihal and I attend Queen’s College. I am a young aspiring author. I would love to make my contributions to celebrating our Amerindian people; hence, I have worked hard to write a poem in honour of Indigenous Heritage Month. My poem, ‘Whistling Wretch’ is focused on an Amerindian myth, The Kanaima. Different beliefs exist and this piece simply portrays one of them. An interesting aspect about this revenge seeking spirit is that it would torture its victims, rather than just murder them. It will announce the impending attack by a shrill whistle. The Kanaima can then take any form and attack. The victim in this poem was assaulted and killed by the Kanaima in the form of a black panther. WHISTLING WRETCH A sanguine trickle of pain from where the cassava’s

claws had slashed my finger, The shadows of dense green leaning over my shoulder, A heavy cloud of tranquility hovered my naive form, As I blindly worked my way through the thickets A shrill whistle impaled my serenity, The hairs at the back of my neck listened for the source, My saucer eyes darted wildly in the shrouded display, Another agonizingly low one, vibrating through my poised limbs. My collapsed heart pleaded for silent mercy, As my inevitable fate rose to its full height, And scrutinized my weakened soul with merciless pitch-black eyes, Its black paw beginning to take a step closer, sealing my doom.

If the courts had ruled otherwise, where would things stand today? Dear Editor, Following the court ruling, the union has shifted gear and has suspended protest action and is making a case for the GS in urging dialogue with Education Ministry (Demerara Waves, Sept 18). One can only wonder if the court had granted the reliefs sought, whether the protest would have been suspended or the ante upped? The belated

disassociation of the union against the derogatory remarks of a sitting minister rings hollow, and has come now with the hope an audience with Education Ministry will be the eventual outcome. Shamshun Mohamed

With each thundering stomp, its lip boasted threateningly sharp teeth, Its white pearl contrasting the night sky and strewn with red, And claws were knives, Stood hungry and getting closer. I forgot to breathe, unable to run, this was my only escape. But why couldn’t I do it? Is this what fear feels like? Terror harshly mutilated my mind, Turning it against itself, fighting like a cornered soldier. Something clicked in my hollow mind, Any whiff of fear and sanity dissipated into a neglected turmoil, Although the Kanaima has my dislocated shoulder in its grasp, I am not afraid, I am safe now. Safe from the whistling wretch. Thank you for reading! Yours respectfully, Priyanka Ramdihal

Too many old unsolved murders, too many new ones, too much Guyanese silence Dear Editor, The news of the death of Orin Boston disrupted the tranquility of the quiet Cinderella County on the morning of Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Mr. Orin Boston, a 29-year-old businessman, was shot dead by law enforcement officers after storming his home in the wee hours of the morning. Family members reported that Mr. Boston was shot dead while in his bed with his wife, and being unarmed. They also indicated that the couple’s children were in the home when the law enforcement officers forcefully gained entry into the house. Editor, as a Guyanese, I am concerned! Guyana is slowly slipping into a state of despair. It is incomprehensible how an unarmed man can be shot in his bed by a law enforcement officer. Evidently, those who sit in the seat of government have failed the people in this country. After the August 2, 2020, declarations of the highly contentious General and Regional Elections, there is no leadership from Mr. Irfaan Ali and his team. The PPP/C regime has yet to produce a holistic plan for public safety, crime fighting, and police overreach that have spiralled out of control. Guyanese will recall the

many murders, whether execution style or otherwise, since August 2, 2020. The regime is on record claiming, “crime has reduced since August 2, 2020.” However, as the good book says, “those who have eyes to see let them see and ears to hear, let them hear.” The crime statistics is, indeed, alarming! Daily reports on the various media platforms inform us of the steady rise in crime. Unfortunately, the average person can judge the upsurge in crime without the Guyana Police Force’s data. Equally disturbing within the year of the PPP/C regime in office, Guyanese have seen the execution of Peter Headley, Ricardo Fagundes, Erian DaSilva, Dale Christopher, and Darren Harris, amongst others, whether at the hands of police officers or unknown characters. To date, many, if not all, of the families of the bereaved await justice. In April 2021, Kaieteur News published reports from the Guyana Police Force that eighty-one percent (81%) of persons murdered for the year 2021 were males. In a small society like Guyana, where the female outnumbered the male, concerns must be shown to the constant loss of life and the lives of predominately male afroGuyanese. The senseless

killing of Mr. Orin Boston must not be added to the lengthy list of unsolved murders by the hands of the police or unknown characters; become a cold case. Guyanese have lost confidence in the Guyana Police Force and its handling of criminal matters. Information regarding the death of Mr. Boston suggested that a S.W.A.T team from Georgetown travelled to Essequibo. Accounts from the Force indicated a breakdown in communication between Mr. Nigel Hoppie, who is performing the functions of Commissioner of Police and Senior Officers below him. How can this be? Subsequent reports from the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force revealed that they are oblivious of the instructions given for the execution of such operations. What an absurdity! Editor, are Guyanese to assume that subordinates within the Force are taking instruction(s) from a parallel authority? There are several unanswered questions in my mind, which an independent and impartial investigation can only answer. I would like to ascertain the following questions from the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force: 1. Was there a breach in the Standard Operations Procedure of the Force?

...I will stand with Minister Manickchand From page 5 disrepair, and the drains and surroundings of these buildings are not the envy of the world? Why would I not stand in solidarity, after the children in the hinterlands have proper transportation, instead of having to traverse miles and

paddle rivers to school? In fact, why should I stand in solidarity when parents are called illiterate? Editor, when the time for standing in solidarity is right, the thought of playing with the idea of the Minister in the class of sus domesticus will be withdrawn. Elevation to summa cum

laude will no doubt be appropriate. Editor, there is a pesky question rolling around in my mind. Will there be a day when the supporters of the Minister can join me and shout, “The Minister is a G.O.A.T.”? Sincerely, Les Archer

2. For a S.W.A.T operation to be conducted, what are the steps or procedures to be complied with? 3. Since the hierarchy of the Force is unaware of the operations, then who gave the instructions? 4. Was the Commander in the PomeroonSupenaam Region given prior notification of the operations? From 2000 to 2010, Guyana descended into a state where human lives were treated like wild animals. Practically, everyday motionless bloodied bodies were found in the streets, burial grounds, dumpsites and other places. During that decade, commonly called, “the troubled era,” many families, including those of Ronald Waddell, former Minister Satyadeow Sawh and Courtney Crum-Ewing in March 2015, to name a few; are still grieving, looking and hoping for answers. We also witnessed the phantom squad and death squad wreak havoc in many communities. Are we back in those days?

During the APNU+AFC government’s term in office, the Guyana Police Force exhibited a high degree of professionalism. There was confidence and building of trust between “citizens and Police.” Can we say same is being demonstrated since August 2, 2020? We recall in March 2021, during the anniversary celebrations of the annual Police Officer’s Conference, persons within the Force took offence to the prayers cited by the Force’s Chaplin, Pastor Patrick Doolichand. He was eventually removed as Chaplin and later the decision was rescinded. Well, several months after, Guyanese have seen for themselves what the Right Rev. Doolichand was praying against. Is the installed government serious about its respect for human rights? The deafening silence from the regime tells a different story. Mr. Boston’s family, wife and children are traumatised. The incident will have long-term psychological impacts on their lives. I have not seen or read of any advisory, whether

from the regime, as a collective, or through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, on the mechanisms in place to offer psychological support to the family, while coping with this situation. Guyanese, we must be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. We should use the late George Floyd’s killing in the United States of America as a classical example. It revealed to the world, who are Americans. They stood as ONE and UNITED, until JUSTICE was served for the late George Floyd! Why? Simply put, Mr. Floyd’s death was senseless and inhumane. Guyanese, it is time we wakeup. “Enough is Enough! No to Police Brutality!” Let us UNITE against this dastardly act. I close by extending my commiseration to the bereaved families and friends of the late Orin Boston and pray that JUSTICE be served in reasonable time. Yours in service, Ms. Annette Ferguson Member of Parliament – APNU+AFC

Government must lead the way lawfully Dear Editor It is expected that a government would lead by example, especially when it comes to adherence to laws and best practices. However, the Ali administration seems to have little to no regard for rules and regulations. On Saturday, 18th September 2021, the Minister of Home Affairs oversaw the burning of some 2000 pounds each of cocaine and marijuana by CANU and the Guyana Police Force on Homestretch Avenue. This press worthy event was streamed live on social media. This reckless and senseless action bothers me. The fact that there was no EPA officer present nor a caution to let the viewing public know that open burning is a criminal offence, suggests to me that approval for the burning was probably not even sought. Even though I know an approval can easily be backdated and obtained,

those involved must be held accountable for this action. The open burning of cocaine and marijuana by the Government must be condemned as both reckless and senseless. Open fires are especially dangerous near populated areas. It can be a serious risk to children, seniors, persons with heart problems and respiratory ailments. It also threatens natural resources and contributes to climate change. The harmful contaminants from burning affects, water, air, wildlife and natural habitats. The burning occurred on the outskirts of the Botanical Gardens, which also houses our zoological park and a bird sanctuary, after the Zoo is GWI and the residents on Hadfield Street. I have seen so many thoughtless, careless, reckless and lawless actions from the Ali administration, beginning with the swearingin of a dual citizen as a

Minister of Government and Member of Parliament, even as this matter was settled in our court. Last Saturday, we saw the open burning of cocaine, marijuana, used tyres, plastic, and suitcases, among whatever else was used to contain the illegal substances. Might I remind Guyanese that under the Environmental Protection (air quality) regulations, it is an offence to conduct open burning without approval from the EPA, and penalties range from $75,000 to $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months? With that said, I would like to call upon the Environmental Protection Agency to state publicly whether or not approval was granted for Saturday’s open burning by government, and if not, then I’d like to suggest that those involved be held accountable in accordance with the EPA’s regulations. Woman set on fire by husband dies Sandramma Raju, 29, the woman who was set afire by her husband about a week ago succumbed to her injuries on Saturday around 19:00hrs. Raju, a lab technician formerly attached to the Skeldon Public Hospital and a mother of five-year-old girl was reportedly set alight by her husband, Ganeshwar Sheocharran, following an argument they had on Monday, September 13 at their home in Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice, Region Six. Her parents were alerted about the incident around 12:30hrs that day by Raju’s nephew and had rushed to her home where they found her badly burnt. She was taken to hospital where she was placed in the Burn Care Unit (ICU). Doctors battled there to save her life but they lost the fight on Saturday.

Dead, Sandramma Raju

To be recharged with Raju’s murder, Ganeshwar Sheocharran

Her husband had fled all the way to the United States of America (USA), but was eventually nabbed on September 15 by American authorities at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport and sent back to Guyana. His capture was made possible after Guyanese

police relayed intelligence to its American counterpart that a wanted suspect was heading there. Sheocharran, has since been placed before the courts and remanded for the heinous act. However, now that she is dead, it expected that he will be recharged with her murder.

“Do suh, nah like suh” No one should be surprised at the song which has been produced denigrating the Minister of Education. The colonial experience has left a legacy of cruelty within our society and this legacy is often manifested in people finding pleasure in humiliating and degrading others. This happens across all classes: rich and poor. But it is extremely prevalent among the working classes. There was a wellpublicised incident in Guyana in which some students, at a private school, urinated in a girl’s water bottle. They were expelled. These are the sort of cruel and crude pranks which take place within our society. And they are often done without any consideration to the effect it can have on the victims. I have seen children mock and taunt other kids until those kids cry. They taunt and taunt these kids, ridiculing them, making jokes of them, telling them all kinds of hurtful things, including about their mothers. And if there are cheerleaders at the side, the tantalising becomes never-ending. The more the bystanders find what is being done funny, the longer it continues. I have seen groups of children pick on another child walking alone. That child cannot retort because it will only invite more attacks. He or she cannot run away because that would give license to future attacks. And sometimes when complaints are made, some teachers simply say, “Oh, children will be children!” Well such behaviour is not being children at all. It is being cruel and it is considered as bullying.

Children are scarred by this sort of behaviour. And it has become institutionalised. Sometimes when our sportsmen and sportswomen disappoint, they are subject to all kinds of name-calling and abuse. It happens in workplaces where some bosses make it their duty to humiliate their staff and tell them all kinds of hurtful things. While coworkers would laugh and be amused at the expense of the victim, insensitive to how that person may be feeling. Sometimes out of the kindness of your heart, you invite some of your friends to your home. And they sit and partake of whatever is offered and when you are out of earshot, they laugh at your blinds, your furniture and your clothes. The irony of it all is that many of the victims of this abuse end up becoming perpetrators of similar abuse to others. They suffered at the hands of such treatment but end up doing the same to others. But there is also the view that finding pleasure at the expense of others has a therapeutic effect of compensating for your own shortcomings. So sometimes, when we mock and laugh at others, it can be the reflection of our own envy, or shortcomings. The production of that song which is stirring so much condemnation in society was bound to happen. It was inevitable that the abuse heard on the picket lines would parlay into something even more vulgar and crude. And the outcome is the production of that song denigrating the Minister of Education. But there is another side to this phenomenon. It is about the failure to be able to

PAGE 9

marshal your arguments so as to advance your cause. If you cannot muster convincing and compelling arguments, the tactic has often been to resort to personal attacks. Sometimes, these attacks represent a form, of revenge for those who feel that they have lost their cause. Guyana’s politics is full of this sort of crudeness. In the 2006 elections, there was a billboard erected on the West Coast of Demerara caricaturing Bharrat Jagdeo in the most obscene way. People would be in the minibuses and when they saw the billboard, some of them would burst out laughing as if they derived extreme pleasure from viewing this vulgar poster. Well, Jagdeo had the last laugh. He scored an emphatic victory in the elections and those who were seeking to belittle him ended up on the losing side. Not many however have such fortune. Many victims of taunts and teasing end up being emotionally and psychologically affected. They carry the psychological scars with them for the rest of their lives and they often end up doing the same thing to others. And in this regard, while the lyrics of the song and its intention are to be deplored, the producers deserve some pity because they may at some time have also been a victim of similar humiliation. (The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of this newspaper.)

“We have to do that project in phases. We first have to get the drainage done, so the machine will work along the road to ensure all the drains are cleared and that we fill all the low spots first. After that is done, engineers from both the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works will come to do an assessment of the road so that the initial cost of moving it from its current state to the next phase can be determined,” Minister Mustapha disclosed. He also said that a team of extension officers from the various agencies will be returning to meet with the farmers to advise them on best practices and doing agriculture in a smarter way given the effects climate change is having on traditional agricultural practices. Minister within the Ministry of Public Works Deodat Indar, who accompanied Minister Mustapha to the meeting, also told residents that each house in the community will soon benefit from household solar units after requests were made for electricity in the community. “For us to put a substation, install transmission lines, and a generator, it will be a costly affair based on how the houses are situated. What we did, our government has embarked on getting household solar units for riverine communities. We

Agriculture Minister, Zulfikar Mustapha started it a couple of months ago. Since we got into government, we met with the Indian Government and they were funding the solar initiative. So, its 30,000 solar units that can be installed on any house…This is being done through a Line of Credit. Once that is done, we will bring them and install them on every house in the community. So, you will get electricity but it will be through these solar units,” Minister Indar said. Residents noted that with the closure of the Wales Estate under the previous administration, many persons found it hard to sustain their families and have since left the community. Those who remained were left at a disadvantage and turned to farming to maintain their families. Cleudigs Charles, a farmer, said that he was happy with

the visit and sought the assistance of the ministers with providing the necessary machinery to help them to expand their production. Annand Singh, another farmer who was at the meeting sought the assistance of the ministers with helping him to gain access to machines that are already in the community and managed by the community’s Co-op Society. “There are some motor blowers and a tractor and when I went to ask to use it, they told me I’m not a part of the Co-op, which was merged with the farmers within the society and when you go to use the equipment, they are telling you that the society did not merge. We left the cane farming but we were still farming. Right now, I have a set of orange trees and due to the flood, the ants gone up in it and build nests and I can’t clean them. That’s why I ask for the motor blower to assist with cleaning them but they had to leff just so,” the farmer explained. After listening to the farmer, Minister Mustapha told residents that officers from the Ministry will investigate the matter. Minister Mustapha told residents that the President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali-led government is committed to ensuring every community benefits from equal development and that persons, in general, have better living standards and access to resources.

...1,918 cases of child abuse reported up to From page 8 around public awareness, parenting, family relationships and community involvement as well as age appropriate education on child abuse matters for children and adolescents. The activities will involve parents, children and members of various communities, as well as multimedia messages featuring children of Guyana. Minister Persaud asserted that, “the CPA can attest to the fact that children growing up in abusive households often replicate the very behaviour when they start

their own families; and the cycle is perpetuated. We must always remember that, ‘Children deprived of love, encouragement and safe environments can morph into adults filled with hate, poor selfworth and intolerance.’” In the meantime, Minister Persaud encourages the use that the 914 hotline, which will assist with an increase in reporting. “I exhort members of the public to use this and other responsible forms of reporting and to desist from placing pictures of children or anything that identifies a child who is being abused in the

public domain as this leads to stigma, more trauma and mental health issues for these children,” she said. Dr. Persaud urged “Persons who may be aware of children in distress are urged to call the 24-hour 914 hotline, or the Child Protection Agency (CPA) on 227-0979. An individual wishing to report a matter is not required to provide proof of abuse.” “If something just doesn’t seem right, it usually isn’t, so the CPA only requires the public to provide the location and identity of the child for us to intervene,” she added.

...Like CJIA, Sheriff-Mandela project is another From page 14 reach the adjusted October 31, 2021, deadline. Kaieteur News previously reported that in November 2019, the road expansion project was halted after the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ceased funding due to non-compliance of the contractor with health, safety and traffic management standards. At the time of the suspension, Former Minister with responsibility for Public Works, David Patterson noted that the issues brought about by the contractor’s negligence had persisted, even though the company was engaged on its short-

comings. “Sinohydro was warned on several occasions to rectify these issues but unfortunately, the majority of failures identified remained outstanding,” the former Minister had stated. Nevertheless, the Public Infrastructure Minister at the time said that the contractor will foot the bill for road safety works undertaken by the government. It was reported that with an injection of $6.4B, the road project will see the rehabilitation of pavements, construction of bridges, culverts and a pedestrian overhead walkway at North Ruimveldt, along with traffic and drainage upgrades. It is the intention to also

extend the design life of the pavement and all roadway structures to a minimum of 20 years from the expected end of construction. Moreover, in relation to the CJIA expansion project that the Minister made reference to while discussing the road expansion project – that project contract was signed since in 2011 under then President, Bharrat Jagdeo, and was passed through the truncated presidency of Donald Ramotar, and the project is yet to be completed. As the cost for the CJIA expansion project continues to climb, Minister Edghill had stated that the final cost would not surpass US$200M.

Gemechu breaks course record at Copenhagen Half Marathon WorldAthletics - Tsehay Gemechu set a course record while Amedework Walelegn made it an Ethiopian double at the Copenhagen Half Marathon, a World Athletics Elite Label Road Race, yesterday. Making the most of the flat course in Denmark’s capital city, Gemechu took 52 seconds off her almost twoyear-old PB, running a dominant 1:05:08 to improve the course record set by Sifan Hassan in 2018 by seven seconds. Walelegn, meanwhile, won a much closer men’s race, holding off a challenge from Kenya’s Keneth Renju to win by two seconds in 59:10. Running behind her pacemaker Roy Hoornweg, who also paced Yalemzerf Yehualaw to her world half

marathon record in Larne last month, Gemechu had her sights on the 1:05:15 race record set by the now double Olympic champion Hassan three years ago, but the big pre-event favourite wasn’t alone in the opening stages. Her fellow Ethiopians Hawi Feysa, Gete Alemayehu and Beyenu Degefa, plus Kenya’s Vivian Kiplagat, joined her in a lead group which went through 5km in 15:16 but by 10km (30:48) the pack was starting to stretch, with Alemayehu having been dropped and Gemechu still to the fore and looking comfortable. A couple of kilometres later Gemechu, who finished fourth in the 2019 world 5000m final in Doha, had broken away and was running clear ahead of her compatriot

Feysa, the 2017 U20 world cross country silver medallist. By 15km Gemechu, now running without her pacemaker, had a 13-second lead ahead of Feysa, with Kiplagat another 22 seconds back. That is how the positions remained to the finish line, but with Gemechu’s advantage having grown to half a minute. Feysa, who has a 2:23:36 marathon PB from Dubai last year but was making her half marathon debut, finished second in 1:05:41, with Kiplagat clocking 1:06:07 to take 31 seconds off her PB in third. Degefa was fourth (1:08:15) and Ethiopia’s Yitayish Mekonene fifth (1:08:53). The men’s race saw a group of nine athletes, plus pacemaker Abel Sikowo, pass

As Sikowo dropped back just before 15km it was the prerace favourite Walelegn, who claimed bronze at last year’s World Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia, who took control, taking the field through that checkpoint in 42:15. The podium was decided over the next kilometre, with Walelegn making a move along with Kenya’s Daniel Mateiko and Renju. With around two kilometres remaining, Walelegn tried to break away but with a glance over his shoulder he could see it wasn’t enough to lose his rivals. Then it was Renju’s turn to push the pace and while Walelegn stuck close behind him, Mateiko was dropped and the race was down to two. Covering Renju’s move, Walelegn was determined to take the top spot and with another look over his shoulder at 21km he strode down the final stretch to victory. Renju’s runner-up time of

Manny Pacquiao: Boxing star to run for Philippines President

BBCnews - Philippine boxing star Manny Pacquiao says he is to run for president in next year’s election. He was nominated as a candidate by a faction of the ruling party, PDP-Laban. On top of a glittering career as a fighter, Mr Pacquiao, 42, is a senator in the Philippines’ parliament. Incumbent Rodrigo Duterte is barred from another term but has been picked by a rival party faction to run for vice-president, a move critics say is an attempt to cling to power. He was selected to run alongside a close ally, Christopher “Bong” Go, but Mr Go says he does not want to succeed Mr Duterte. While his party says it wants Mr Go to reconsider his decision, his rejection of the nomination has led to suggestions that

President Duterte’s daughter Sara DuterteCarpio could join him on the ticket. As a boxer, Mr Pacquiao won world titles in an unprecedented eight different weight divisions. He lost his most recent bout against a Cuban opponent and said he was considering retiring. Accepting the nomination, he said: “I am a fighter, and I will always be a fighter inside and outside the ring.” Mr Pacquiao has pledged to campaign against poverty and corruption. He is a popular figure in his home country but faces an uphill battle, trailing in opinion polls consistently topped by Sara Duterte-Carpio. It is not clear which of the PDP-Laban factions will be recognised by the country’s electoral commission for the 2022 election.

IPL: Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians in Mumbai BBCsport - The Indian Premier League returned in dramatic fashion as Chennai Super Kings staged a superb fightback to defeat defending champions Mumbai Indians. Chennai were reduced to 24-4, effectively 24-5, because of an injury to Ambati Rayudu in Dubai. But opener Ruturaj Gaikwad batted through the innings for 88 not out from 58 balls to help them post 156-6. Mumbai then never recovered from 37-3, closing on 136-8, to give Chennai victory by 20 runs. CSK, captained by India

legend MS Dhoni and with England all-rounder Moeen Ali in their side, join Delhi Capitals at the top of the table, having won six of their eight games. The IPL has restarted in the United Arab Emirates having been postponed in May amid a surge of coronavirus cases in India. Chennai are one of the IPL’s most successful teams - only five-time champions Mumbai have won more titles than the Super Kings’ three. However, when the 2020 version of the IPL was held entirely in the UAE, Chennai struggled, finishing

World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships called off due to rising COVID-19 cases in Bermuda Insidethegames - The inaugural World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships have been called off with less than a month before the event was due to be held because of a spike in Covid-19 cases in host country Bermuda. World Triathlon said the championships, which had been scheduled for October 15 to 17, “would not take place this year”. The number of new Covid-19 infections

in the British overseas territory has been rising in recent weeks, leading to pressure being placed on its hospitals. seventh in the eight-team table. That struggle looked set to continue when New Zealand pace pair Trent Boult and Adam Milne shared four wickets and Milne hit Rayudu on the elbow to effectively remove half of the batting line-up inside the six-over powerplay. But Gaikwad rebuilt in a stand of 81 with Ravindra Jadeja, who made 26, before Dwayne Bravo blasted 23

from only eight balls, including three sixes. Gaikwad, who was crucially dropped on 19 by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off the spin of Rahul Chahar, ended with four maximums, as Chennai somehow recovered to post a total way beyond Mumbai. Mumbai falter without Rohit and Hardik Mumbai, winners in 2019 and 2020, have now lost half of their eight games to lie fourth in the table. They

were without influential captain Rohit Sharma because of a hamstring problem, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya was also missing. Without Rohit at the top of the order, Mumbai lost De Kock and debutant Anmolpreet Singh to Deepak Chahar and the dangerous Ishan Kishan to S h a r d u l T h a k u r. Wi t h Moeen’s off-breaks proving economical - he conceded only 16 runs from three overs

- Mumbai never found any momentum in the chase. And although Saurabh Tiwary ended on 50 not out, Mumbai needed 24 from the final over of the match, in which Bravo picked up two wickets to cap a fine allround performance with 325. Chennai Super Kings 156-6 (20 overs): Gaikwad 88* (58), Mumbai Indians 136-8 (20 overs): Tiwary 50* (40), Bravo 3-25. Chennai won by 20 runs
