CEO Aracari Resort Vacation Guyana (VG) is maturing. This is our fifth edition. We are proud to report that our website is completely implemented and all issues, past and present can be viewed on www.vacationguyana.gy. This gives our advertisers a tremendous opportunity to advertise to the world community. For an additional nominal charge, advertisers can have a link from www.vacationguyana.gy to their own websites. The effectiveness of advertising is dependent on whether or not your advertisement reaches your target market. Not everyone who sees an advertisement would be interested in it. Our distribution of VG is targeted to persons with a high probability of needing your products and services. This is the most effective form of advertising that gives you the best return for your advertising dollar. The following is a summary of our distribution: Region 2 – Essequibo Coast 300 Region 3 – Including the Essequibo Islands 2400 Region 4 including CJ and Ogle Airports 4770 Region 6 – Berbice including Molson Creek 1700 Region 7 – Bartica 300 Region 9 – Lethem by post 200 Region 10 – Linden by post 150 Please take a moment to check the complete list of the distribution points included in this page. When Christopher Columbus, followed later on by his band of European counterparts, got sight of this part of world for the first time, they did not discover a New World, as many were lead to believed. Thousands of years before, these lands were settled by a people , some of whose way of life, culture and practices were more advanced than the Europeans. These parts of the world were colonized by the conquering Europeans, which basically destroyed a rich and diverse culture of a people who learnt to co-exist with nature. History records that there were many more Amerindians in the PreColonial period. In Guyana when the Europeans descended, many of the different groups of Amerindians became extinct or fled for a number of reasons, many died of strange illnesses, some were exterminated by warring factions, while others fled to neighbouring countries. The early Dutch Settlers used some of the tribes to enslave others, providing labour. After enslaved Africans became the choice of labour for the plantations, Amerindians worked with the Colonialists to quell slave rebellions and recapture runaway slaves. In Guyana, there are nine tribes; Wai-wais, Macushis, Patomonas,
Arawaks, Caribs, Wapishianas, Arecunas, Akawaios, and Warraus. Each group has its own language and occupy relatively well-defined separate ecological spaces that have influenced their distinct cultures. They live today a semi-traditional lifestyle in areas that are mainly titled lands. The political structures are linked to the Local Government System and are largely governed by the National Toshaos Council, elected every five years. Guyana has some of the most educated Amerindians in the Region and many of them are in various professions, including in Parliament, and higher education institutions as a deliberately policy of the Government. The Amerindians of Guyana make up the third largest of the ethnic groups. It is fastest growing group which currently constitutes 10 – 12 % of the country's population. As this group of Guyanese interact and socialize more with their countrymen, they are redefining themselves and finding new roles in this multicultural and pluralistic society. September has been designated Amerindian heritage Month, a month during which the nation observes and reflects on the contributions Amerindians make towards the development and social fabric of this country. The theme for this year's observances is Honouring our Culture: Advancing our Heritage Vacation Guyana joins in saluting all Amerindians during this period. Main Activities for Heritage Month · Sept 02 – 05.Amerindian Village, Sophia Complex. Four days of exciting cultural shows, featuring Amerindian talent, Craft & Food Exhibition. · Sept 07. Heritage Village celebrations, Karasabai, South Pakaraima. Experience authentic Amerindian customs and traditions. · Sept 21 – 22. Amerindian Sports festival. GCC Ground, Bourda. · Sept 28. A Stalwart in the Industry Vacation Guyana this month salutes Gem Eytle, who is still active in the management of a Company she joined in 1954 as a Clerical Assistant and after working several years in the Colonial Civil Service. She was born and raised in Georgetown at a time when education, mannerisms, deportment and ethics were the hallmark of a person's development. Some may want to call this 'old-school upbringing', but in many cases, it is what defines a person, and more so the quality Guyanese Woman in the true sense. It was these characteristics, coupled with perseverance and leadership qualities, that enabled her to be appointed Company Secretary in 1963 and Managing Director in 1976 of Francis DeCairies and Company. This is no mean feat given the fact that during those periods it was rare for a woman to be in the leadership of organizations. Gem's resilience and acumen were largely responsible for Frandec's success over the decades as one of the leading players in the Travel Industry. This is despite a huge loss two years ago when fire completely destroyed the offices of the Company, in the process losing valuable records and precious documents. This did not deter her, and with the help of family, staff and friends rebuilt the Company, which today is still among the leading Travel Agencies in the country. At 82, she remains at the helm of Frandec, guiding a team that ensures the pride in its integrity and excellent personalized services is maintained.

- A GUYANESE ARTIST Angold Thompson shared with us one childhood story that inspired him to become the great artist he is today. Recounting as a young boy, observing his father's work was something he enjoyed doing. (His father the late Basil Thompson is a well known Guyanese Artist). On one occasion he defaced, with a razor blade, a portrait of a lady painted by his father under the impression that he had greatly improved the painting. He was subsequently given a sound whipping that he would never forget to his present age of sixty-five. One would think, that would have discouraged him to ever become an artist but contrary, he took it as a learning lesson that

fueled his drive to become an accomplished technician in both water base and oil medium paints. His first mark was made at a National Inter-school Art Competition, where he won the top award. He later won a new Comers, Best watercolor and three painting of the year awards at National Exhibitions between 1966 and 1984. He has had three solo exhibitions and participated in several collective art shows. Some of his paintings are private collective in the Caribbean, Europe, and Americans and The Guyana National Art Gallery. Many observers of his work and fellow artists are often amazed by how he achieved his photographic look that is present in all of his paintings, he accredited this technique he learned from his father and English Art Master who were both realist painters. Mr Thompson paintings depict his immediate environment, exploring the realities of Guyana that one can immediately grasp. They all seem at first glance, to be faithful depictions of moments of life, yet the paintings are far more than just snap shots of scenes. Closer examination reveals the artist's employment of a range of techniques to artfully reconstruct the scenes into a play of light and shadow masses, forms, colours, and tones. The light which plays across the scenes, from light golden yellow to blue shadows, contributes significantly to an overall effect which is quietly dramatic. Thompson is adept at capturing
heightened his desire to become a better artist. One could jokingly say the art was beaten into him. Nevertheless, he was always encouraged and guided by his father to improve his Art. He developed a greater love for art during his secondary school days at Central High School, where he worked for three years with an English Art Master Mr. John Criswick. These conditions and the vibrant society of artists during the late sixties - Dennis Williams, Stanley Greaves, Donald and Leila Lonche, Hurburt Mushette and many others further

just the right moment when all human actors are in a ballet of movement, or are in one significant poignant moment. In these ways, the artist makes the most humble scenesmen on horse carts, coconut water vendor, old houses and other structures-appear to be the most heroic and significant; and nobody in Guyana does it better. In recent years Thompson has experimented with non-representational styles and techniques that are in contrast to his more straight forward renderings. These abstract images seem to indicate an artist ready to challenge his own ideas and skills, but always from the starting point of Guyanese life in its variety. You can find some of his work display at the office of Wonderland Tours.
