EDITORIAL

Leadership absolutism Guyanese have lived with this before, and it has reared its ugly head again, while growing more monstrous than before. What we live with today, as sensed by those clearheaded Guyanese on the alert, is ballooning leadership absolutism, in one shape and form after another. It has taken deeper root, and flourishes more and more than ever before. Yet the majority of Guyanese are content to be quiet, since it is the safest way to not get on the wrong side of such leadership wrongdoings.

We think that the best way to flesh this out in the starkest terms is to present what is happening today in comparison to what occurred before under the reign of another leader, that was bent on the barbarities that accompanied his absolutisms, who was none other than Forbes Burnham.

First, there is leadership effort to restrict public spaces, so as to put a clamp on citizens gathering and protesting.

The Guyana Police Force was misused before in blatant and subtle forms to pressure citizens into watching their step, or stepping back out of the public space altogether.

The blatant policing forms at control were in the shape of police denial of permission or actual confrontation at the barricades, while the subtler means were employed through the activities of undercover units, such as the Special Branch. Under Burnham, it became a notorious and feared squad. Fast forward to more recent times, and efforts by those having dissents to express and messages require prior police approval for marches or protests are either delayed, or suffocatingly managed, or blocked outright. As in Burnham times, the police have been used to restrain Guyanese, who disagree. One of the latest developments, which would have made Burnham proud, is something going under the name of Joint Regional Security Team that was almost literally sneaked under the cover of dark into the parliamentary sphere. When leaders take aim at closely controlling the security apparatus for purposes, some stated and others unknown, with the latter being the worst anticipated (given their histories and profiles), then a first major plank is laid to squeeze the population, and especially as such pertains to those possessing stubbornness and unpleasantness.

Second, leadership absolutisms are neither haphazard nor overnight in the making, but well thought out and then deployed for maximum results. When Burnham weaved his way into power, a major target of his machinations was to stifle free speech. The only speech that could be free and allowed to be transmitted to the population was that filtered by his agencies, which were manned by his people. They all spoke the party line, which was the leader’s line. This was rammed down the throat of the population, which the determination that such be swallowed, whether liked or not.

So, all the independent media organs were put out of operation. Guyanese were largely limited to the Guyana Information Service, Guyana Broadcasting Company, and Guyana Chronicle. Having narrowed the open spaces and denied the opportunity for Guyanese to disagree peacefully, the PNC leader and strongman then proceeded to move on controlling the mind of Guyanese. That is, control what they read and what they heard, so that there was some control over how they think, how they react. Thinking and reacting, for good or bad, are significantly slower when crucial information is lacking, or distorted, through continuing, calculating leadership spins. In its purest form, the primary objective is to get everyone to think alike, or give the closest impressions of doing so.

Today, this is taking place here more slickly, stealthily.

Earlier, the weapon was advertising revenues withheld. It failed. Nowadays, it is media licensing fees and limitations; plus, the imminent threat of lawsuits for speaking to facts frankly. And the operation of parallel media platforms, which are favoured for spreading the kinds of messages that leaders want to place before the public.

When inroads are made to reconfigure the public service, the entire security apparatus, and the economy a certain crooked way, and with likeminded people, then those are ongoing visible expressions of creeping leadership absolutisms that are old to Guyana, did not die altogether.

For today, they are back, and they are just as ominous, if not worse.

Adam Harris responds to Freddie Kissoon DEAR EDITOR, For some people, trouble follows them regardless of where they go or what they do. The most careful motorist would get into an accident through no fault of his. Just this week, a vehicle slammed into a truck driven by a man who was taking all the care in the world.

The vehicle simply drove into the path of the truck.

I have known of people standing on the parapet being struck dead by some careless driver. It has been the case with cyclists who try to take all the care in the world.

There have also been people who took every precaution to avoid COVID19. They obeyed all the regulations, including avoiding crowds. Lo and behold, some of them actually became infected because a trusted relative who was not as cautious brought the virus into the home.

I have almost all my life tried to avoid confrontation of any kind. There are people who would say to me that they have never seen me angry; that I always smile. Of course, I do get angry but that would be a relatively rare occasion.

I stay out of the maddening crowd but some members of the crowd simply

follow me. Freddie Kissoon is one. I have maintained my distance from anything controversial but Freddie Kissoon wrote a few days ago that I did an interview with Mark Benschop less than a fortnight ago.

Freddie Kissoon was a University of Guyana lecturer whom I knew for probably four decades.

We shared the same space in Kaieteur News; he wrote and I edited. There were clashes over facts. I remember Bonita Bone-Harris saying to me that Freddie Kissoon was wrong to write that Ronald Waddell was buried in the Gulf—a section in the Buxton backlands.

Waddell was actually cremated on the Lusignan foreshore. When I published Bonita’s objection, Freddie Kissoon became angry.

When he wrote that I appeared on a Mark Benschop programme a fortnight ago and said certain things about him, I called him.

Most of what he subsequently wrote was true.

He did not write that my objection to his date of the interview got the retort that the date of the interview did not matter.

My last interview with Mark Benschop was April 8, 2021. There were three of us on that programme. One of

Private Sector is never altruistic, will come back for its pound of flesh DEAR EDITOR, I read in the news that President Irfaan Ali had announced that the repainting of the State House was being funded by the private sector.

The President’s clarification came about, I gather, after some individuals felt that the repainting was an inefficient use of State resources.

I, like many, was disturbed when scarce State funds were utilised to ‘green’ the State House during the David Granger presidency. I felt then it was a colossal waste of resources for an unnecessary exercise. Similarly, had State resources been used to ‘ungreen’ the State House, it would have also been humongous wastage.

Nonetheless, President Ali clarified any misconceptions.

But the President’s clarity has opened another can of worms. The private sector, I believe, is hardly ever altruistic and usually sees donations as an investment.

The question I have is President Ali and his Government prepared to give the private sector its pound of flesh considering it has extracted several pounds already? The President, on

several occasions, has spoken about the private sector being the engine of growth. Maybe true as it is, that engine is fuelled by the workers of those enterprises and their successes cannot be delinked from the efforts of those workers.

I do not recollect the President telling the private sector that they needed to treat their workers fairly and justly. This is important as there are workers in the private sector who cannot make ends meet without their family’s assistance. Now some may say you are paid what you are worth. But then, there are those in the private sector who have amassed such a fortune that themselves, their children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren and probably more cannot ever spend. Certainly, with such obscene wealth, they can do more to make the lives of those who generate their wealth a little more comfortable.

I remind the President there is no such thing as a free lunch and the private sector will come knocking.

Freddie Kissoon said that I spent some 10 minutes denigrating him and accusing him of all manner of things.

He did say that he had the recording, all 10 minutes of it, featuring me. I did ask him to send the recording and he did say that I should collect the recording from Benschop. I did.

When I asked Kissoon to share his recording, I simply wanted to match it with mine.

When he refused, I immediately asked myself whether he actually had a recording. I have since read that three people sent him this recording.

The entire recording is one hour, thirty minutes. I don’t know if these three people sent the entire recording. Perhaps, as Freddie Kissoon suggested, they simply sent the last 10 minutes of me telling the world that the PPP paid Freddie, and all manner of things.

I would normally ignore things said about me whether right or wrong. I remember back in 1992, a fellow named Earl Bousquet writing that if the PPP were vindictive, I would have been in jail for theft. I got angry then said let it ride. Today, all those years later, not even the staunchest PPP supporter would recall that incident.

I remember Freddie Kissoon running afoul of the tax man. At the time, the head was Khurshid Sattaur, God

rest his soul. Freddie knows what he did for him. He was so desperate that he came to my home.

Perhaps, I am being childish here to recall something like that. But I am not being childish when for decades I kept telling Freddie to write about issues rather than people. That is an impossible task. And he cannot take the heat. Ralph Seeram, now resident in Florida, gave Freddie a dressing down for an attack against Seeram.

Seeram likened Freddie to Saga Bay, a donkey that roamed New Amsterdam.

With tears in his eyes, Freddie went to Glenn Lall and got him to drop Seeram from among his columnists.

Well, this time around, I must state that I shared the video of the so-called interview with Benschop. Dr Asquith Rose was one with whom I shared the video. For the entire one hour and thirty minutes, he could find nothing of what Freddie Kissoon spoke. He then said that perhaps there was another interview.

So I go back to my corner with the words of Dr. Rose ringing in my ears. “Adam, ignore Freddie. Once you reply, he will jump to write something else.”

And as an aside, I noticed that the lack of an invitation to my 70th birthday party is still a sore point.

Three years later and Freddie still remembers.

Stricter is now ‘authoritarian’ DEAR EDITOR, An opposition member made a call for stricter guidelines to combat the pandemic (‘Stricter guidelines needed to combat pandemic in Guyana – Dr. Cummings’ - KN Sept. 5). In an apparent heeding of the call, the Government has implemented revised COVID-19 measures. These measures are now being labelled ‘authoritarian’ by the same opposition.

New versus replacement - a bridge too far?

DEAR EDITOR, One assumes that the EPA reports to a Minister. If this is so, how then could the agency bypass this supervisory level and communicate (downwards) to the Minister of Public Works.

Organisational logic would suggest that the communication should at least be between the Ministers. But then next the question arises as to who is senior, and if one can dictate to the other.

This reasoning does not only appear to elude the overanxious Minister of Public Works, but there is just the insinuation of the latter’s ready acceptance of an adver-

tised project to construct an overhead bridge across the Demerara River could not be considered ‘new’, but a ‘replacement’. This is not about ‘engineering’ or other ‘technical’ context. It is about (elusive) commonsense – that makes the situation so derisible to witnesses, including the several foreign project bidders, and an embarrassment to those locals who are eventually invited to an occasion at which the Minister of Public Works would proudly declare as a ‘Replacement Ceremony’!

Is there the essence of collusion in this exchange?

Opposition supporters anti-vaccine stance not driven by health concerns DEAR EDITOR, I have no apologies to make when I say that those persons who are fuelling the vaccine hesitancy here should be brought before the courts, charged and locked up.

They are not fighting to protect the rights of the people who are joining the picket line. They are engaged in politics. This is not the politics of the people, as expected, according to all they have said. This is nasty, deliberate, and misleading antigovernment politics. I mean, your readers, should listen to the opposition politicians on Facebook using this vaccination issue to score cheap political points. They are milking the issue again for all that it is worth.

They cannot keep my attention because they do not have a programme of developmental goods to offer or talk about.

They do not even have a strategy for winning the upcoming Local Government and General Elections here.

The APNU+AFC politicians are always short on bright ideas but big on criticising. I remember reading Michael Young’s column in one of the dailies called Crossfire. He is right as it pertains to the strategy and nature of politics in Guyana. It is brutish and cold.

The opposition is not concerned about the health and wellbeing of the workers.

They probably want this surge in COVID-19 related deaths and hospitalisations to continue. They will get much

to talk about to fuel the opposition’s campaign of race hate and discrimination banter. For these irresponsible politicians, it is politics over people.

They are not concerned about your health Finally, I think the government is doing its part to fight this COVID-19 virus on several fronts. Let us all do our part in the fight. Let us get vaccinated and encourage others to do the same. And finally, like the then Opposition Leader and now Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said if they come to our communities, with the anti-vaccine campaign telling you frivolous things about the vaccine, we must chase them out!

MP Figueira should show the evidence that herbal remedies combat the COVID-19 virus DEAR EDITOR, On Sunday, September 5, 2021, I tuned in to the virtual meeting, which was hosted by the APNU+AFC with residents of Region 10. The meeting was supposed to be a discussion on vaccination which is of concern to many Guyanese. To say that I was disappointed in some of the speakers is an understatement. I thought that as leaders and public figures, some of the speakers would have been careful with their utterances especially since the discussion was on the pandemic and vaccination. That

was not the case. Editor, I write to you to express my displeasure with Member of Parliament, Jermaine Figueira, regarding some of the statements he made.

From the beginning of the discussion, I could tell that the entire meeting was going to be riddled with misinformation. However, what I was taken aback by was the fact that Figueira basically encouraged the use of herbal remedies as an alternative to vaccines in the fight against COVID-19. The Coalition and their MPs are always quick to ask for evidence when they

are called out for their wrongdoings. So, with that in mind, I ask that Figueira provide us with the evidence of scientific research to prove this. In his exact words, “we have a number of Guyanese who have contracted COVID-19, they used other forms of remedies; local herbal remedies; and they’ve recovered.” He then went on to say that there are testimonies of such that cannot be disputed. I am not aware of any scientific study or research which proves the use of herbal remedies as a better alternative to (Continued on page 22)

PPP no longer Marxist-Leninist in theory but definitely in practice DEAR EDITOR, I note that a once honourable president preceded by an also once honourable former Speaker assert that the PPP is longer Marxist-Leninist.

Given all the free-market capitalist skullduggeries now characteristic of party leaders and party cabals, I am glad they came out with this public confession.

But the party may wish to be considered non-Marxist-Leninist in those mindnumbing theories, but definitely not in the practices perfected under Marxism, Leninism, Maoism, and all those other isms that the PPP still embrace.

It is good that these onetime PPP cardinals of Guyana’s Kremlin have confessed, which I think is the latest deception from a long deceptive group.

Not being MarxistLeninist is the equivalent of the pontiff admitting to being an atheist.

The next thing the once honourable leaders of country and parliament are going to tell Guyanese is that they have found religion, and with the accompanying impeccable integrity that such demands, when sincerely observed.

Editor, given the seductions of oil, everybody is now an Adam Smith disciple in Guyana.

Get me straight: capitalists are the biggest thieves to be encountered anywhere.

Remember, I shared space with them in the beating heart and nerve centre of capitalism.

Anyone that thinks that Goldman is all blue ribbon and apple pie needs some serious reengineering.

And note now a former American leader and his world of trouble for dodges.

The PPP is as much nonMarxist-Leninist as Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and the politburos of both Mother Russia and Celestial China.

What a set of racketeers!

I prefer Mafia godfathers and gang lords from the ghetto, since they are open about how they are, and what they do.

Yes, the PPP leadership struggled to hide criminal capitalist tendencies and conduct, but there has been transparency in this area, for which I thank the president, whose denials only made matters worse.

In terms of MarxistLeninist practices still cherished, there is more and more control of the media for the party’s and leadership lies to be transmitted to cover-up criminal behaviour that robs taxpayers; the taxpayers’ money is used to whip them into shape.

Mind control and total

control have always been defining features of MarxistLeninism, which is why there were gulags for dissidents, so-called criminals, and those that leaders declared insane.

The irony is that a top-rank Bolshevist psychiatrist like Bogdanov and a onetime Lenin physician Takhtarev (also Bolshevist) assessed him psychotic.

That is why they kill so many of their own, just like Chairman Mao. The state police are misused with a Laurentia Beria let loose until he became too much to stomach, and they had to kill him, too.

Editor, look at what was and is in Marxist-LeninistMaoist societies and it is the media, the police, the bureaucracy, the economy (private is government and vice versa), the technology, and more all brought to bear to coerce subject populations into submission.

I submit this is what we have here under this so-called suddenly non-MarxistLeninist PPP. Just a matter of degree and time.

Political continuity determines Vaccinated and unvaccinated that no hemp will be planted here access - a fine kettle of snakes DEAR EDITOR, Two months after a July 13 Newsroom article, “After years of advocacy, Cabinet green- lights Guyana Hemp Industry (GHI)”, I can picture Michael Kirton, co- chair of GHI, once more losing his optimism, probably salivating on his words - “The battle to legalise industrial hemp in Guyana has come to an end,” to Newsroom. Kirton saw the end of the battle on what could at best be described as the “silencing of the lambs”a dismissive excuse that Guyana Hemp industry has received Cabinet’s “no objection” from the VP. Is there a hemp policy out in the public domain or secretly being discussed by the hierarchy of the PPP? I think not.

I haven’t seen or heard Nandlall mention anything about a “regulatory framework”, which he had promised the hemp enthusiasts several moons ago. Despite the Cabinet’s “no objection” from the VP, the article stated that a Government source said that “full approval will be given shortly” and before that happens, “there will need to be legislative changes.” This is contradictory language

and doesn’t augur well for GHI. The hemp people are being duped into believing a lie?

Successive regimes have shied away from allowing Guyanese farmers to cultivate Industrial hemp despite over 30 countries doing so, based on recent research that declassified hemp from the international convention’s list of psychoactive drugs. I am inclined to think that both the PPP and PNC Governments, for fear of political repercussions from the US, have stymied efforts to cultivate hemp here because the US narco watchdog, the DEA, has been pressuring them to not allow the cultivation of hemp here.

The DEA has refused to exempt hemp from its list of psychoactive drugs, despite recently accepted research that shows that hemp’s two percent THC cannot produce a high, because of the smouldering effect of its high cannabinoid content.

The PPP Government, like the PNC Government, will not allow hemp to be planted here, because it sees hemp cultivation here as a sucker punch to their political longevity Kirton and the hemp people can take that to the bank. The

article suggested that Mr. Kirton contemplated the setting up of an “agency that would monitor the industry in terms of licensing, taxes, and the likes.”Why would Kirton contemplate taxes for the state whilst the state by virtue of the Government has volunteered through contract to pay the taxes for a contractor that is making billions from our resources offshore?

Kirton pegged hemp’s profitability “at $6 million from every acre of hemp every 90 – 100 days.” Anil has a penchant for delivering on his promise, with Kirton’s price tag one would have expected him to be fleet-footed in delivery.

The fact that he has stalled on his promise to the hemp enthusiasts reeks of political convenience - bowing to the dictates of the US. Read between the lines folks!

If the Government is serious about its promise of delivering wealth to the people, giving the people the opportunity to create wealth for themselves through the cultivation of hemp is the easiest way to go, political longevity matters more to our leaders.

Hinterland development requires urgent infrastructure development now DEAR EDITOR, The President was in Region Nine over the weekend for the Regional Toshoas Conference and he waxed lyrical about turning Guyana’s largest geographical region into the heartland of largescale agriculture, industrial and commercial development.

A quick reminder Mr. President! For this to be done, there must be proper infrastructure in place and at the top of that list are proper roads for the movement of goods and services to and from the capital city. As a true politician, the President was playing to the gallery of course, but you do expect to see his bold pronouncements being backed up by a clear plan of action.

At the time of writing this letter, a truck heading to Lethem from Georgetown is stuck fast in the mud at

Aranaputa, in the North Rupununi blocking incoming traffic on both sides. Imagine this! On the 6th day of September, the rains have stopped for almost a month now, yet a truck is stuck on the Lethem–Linden Road. No movement has been made whatsoever by the RDC of Region Nine, or the Ministry of Public Works, to effect repairs to this particular section of road, as well as the one hundred and twenty kilometer stretch from Annai to Lethem, which is in a deplorable state not seen for a number of years now.

Is this how the President intends to turn Region Nine into an industrial and commercial hub?

A planeload of Ministers touched down in Lethem with much fanfare over the weekend. Not one, I assume travelled overland, because they

know fully well the state of the road.

I am asking someone in authority, be it the President himself, the Honourable Bishop who heads the Ministry of Public Works, or even the REO or Regional Chairman of Region Nine to provide an update on when the road will be fixed. More has to be done and it has to be done with alacrity, lest the much vaunted dream of Region Nine becoming an economic powerhouse turns out to be just that - a dream. It should not be just about talking the talk, but by walking the walk as well. The last government that dilly-dallied and forgot that they were the servants of the people were kicked out after serving only a term. History does have a habit of repeating itself.

DEAR EDITOR, As I reflect on the most recent Gazetted orders in Guyana, I am reminded of the two women who went before King Solomon claiming to love the same baby. As each claimed the baby, Solomon called his guards and asked for a sword.

He told them he decided to cut the baby in half since each was claiming him. One said YES go ahead, cut him, the other said NOOOO, give the baby to her and do not hurt him. Solomon knew right away whose baby it was. The one willing to give him away unharmed, and while not getting her own way.

Speeches about the public interest, the public good, public safety and public security when the very public in large part is groaning makes me think of strange love. The kind the woman had who wanted Solomon to SLICE the youngster. How do I know it’s the majority groaning? If more were in line with vaccination, there would be no need for such harsh measures. Ideals towards herd

immunity would be closer to being achieved. A parent MUST decide and give consent for their child to be vaccinated but cannot decide for themselves.

The bit about appointment and PCR is a thinly veiled attempt at giving a choice. It is the same as saying get vaccinated or face our consequences. It is meant to hurt.

Organising sites with free or cheaper testing or using antigen results instead of the most expensive would show an interest in reaching ALL at their level. The current measures in my view betray all impressions of genuine care and giving a choice.

All persons entering public buildings, including supermarkets and churches, must be vaccinated. So, a child 12 years and under can go to school but not to church/or is it that they are to go without unvaccinated parents with whom they live? Particularly for places of worship who ensures that order is followed?

For private organisations, businesses, coaches, and others who po-

lices the order for enforcement?

Banks were allowed to take money from citizens and without warning those citizens are no longer allowed to enter the banks without a vaccine or PCR from an approved site within 72 hours to 7 days.

As a law-abiding citizen without a vaccine, I cannot access the services of the police station, but I imagine an unvaccinated criminal will be arrested and taken there.

Perhaps children must be asked to go to the supermarket, banks and other places of import; or maybe by tomorrow, it will be gazetted that children 12 to 17 cannot do business on the behalf of others. Where will it stop or how far will it go? Something is fundamentally wrong with this approach. I pray good sense prevails. Wisdom is proven right by her children.

Besides who is it that takes bread out of the mouth of those they care about; particularly without warning? #Strangelove.

To vaccinate is a choice; not to vaccinate has consequences DEAR EDITOR, Kindly publish my letter so people will get some sense.

(1) If a female goes to visit parliament building, and she wears ‘armless’ or a dress that shows part of her breast, she will not be allowed to enter, she may dress properly or do not enter, that is the regulation for that building, she has a choice.

(2) If you intend to enter a plane going to other country, and you do not have nega-

tive PCR test result, you will be denied entry, that is the regulation, you have a choice.

(3) If you have a licensed firearm in your hand luggage, you will not be allowed to travel, you can request to have that firearm to be placed in your check-in luggage, you have a choice.

(4) If you have more than 4 ounces of liquids in your hand luggage, you will be denied travel, you can dispose of the liquid so you can travel. You have a choice. (5)

If rules and regulations require for you to produce proof of vaccine or negative PCR to enter places, you have a choice, obey the law or stay away, the government is not forcing you to get vaccinated, the government is paying millions of dollars to buy the vaccines and giving it to the people free of charge to save your lives, COVID leads to death.

A professionally driven Police Force will give citizens confidence in its working, thus ensuring optimum cooperation between citizens and the Police.

It is a professional Police Force that produces its aura of confidence.

The letter written by K. Juman-Yassin, AA, and published in today’s 6th September 2021, Kaieteur News is instructive, and I support fully Juman-Yassin’s concerns and recommendations.

However, he failed to deal fully with the contortions of

the Police Service Commission and the Government.

This is a clear effort by a Government whose obsession, whose belief is that it is their divine right to micro manage and control every facet of society and our lives.

Unless this issue is brought to the fore and citizens speak up, even if the proposals by Juman Yassin are implemented will be of little value.

We have seen the fracturing of our police between 1992 and 2015. During that period, we saw a one thousand percent, yes one thousand percent increase of police deaths, the phenomenon “Phantom Gangs”, the “Death Squads” and a new

elite known as the “Black Clothes Police”.

A mature Government, a truly concerned administration should appreciate the value of a professional nonpoliticised Police Force.

The discussion about our security must centre on this.

The bicycle and motorcycle gangs will dwindle, if we re-introduce National Service and ensure that our oil bonanza filters down to our young people.

A well-organised National Service will also provide discipline and personnel for their Police Office Corp and ordinary ranks.

EPA grants permit for US$600M Vreed-en-Hoop port facility D

eveloper of the Port of Vreed-enHoop Project, NRG Holdings Incorporated, on Monday, received an Environmental Permit from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which paves the way for the commencement of the project.

Kaieteur News understands that the project will see an investment of up to US$600M by the 100percent Guyanese-owned consortium. Some of the features of the facility will include an offshore terminal; dry dock facility; a fabrication yard; offshore components; umbilical preparation and spooling yard; administrative buildings to house offices and modernised logistics centers; warehousing; area for a helipad; a wharf, berths, and a dry dock.

The port facility is expected to generate massive employment and revenue opportunities for Guyanese.

Located at Vreed-en-Hoop,

Nicholas Deygoo-Boyer, NRG Holdings Partner Region Three, it will occupy some 400 hectares of coastal land. Approximately 150200 persons are expected to be hired during construction and 50-100 persons for the basic operation and maintenance of the base port facilities indicated in phase one.

According to the investors, the facility will also see services previously provided out of Trinidad now being carried out in Guyana,

with the local economy benefitting from employment, duties and taxes, ancillary goods and services, and capacitybuilding.

Mr. Nicholas DeygooBoyer, one of the partners within the consortium stated that the project will not service the oil and gas industry only, but will also cater to all sectors that require a port facility. He said, “We aim for this project

The permit also guides the hours of construction, as well as the authorisation protocol for use of the land.

Secretary of the consortium, Mr. Andron Alphonso said, “NRG Holdings Inc. is committed to pursuing this development in a manner that is beneficial to all stakeholders.

here was a chilling image which was published last year when the local COVID-19 outbreak was still in its infancy. A photograph appeared in one of the daily newspapers showing the floor of the National Sports Hall being lined with cots, in preparation for a possible situation in which hospitals would be overwhelmed and patients would have to be housed at the National Sports Hall.

Neither APNU+AFC government nor the PPP/C administration has so far had to resort to the use of such a mass facility to treat the infected. But they do have a massive medical tent donated to the country to be used in the eventuality of the country's health system being overwhelmed.

Guyana is fast approaching that stage. The month of September is only one week old and so far, 29 persons have succumbed. If this trend persists – and the rise in new infections indicates that it will persist – this month is going to be the deadliest in Guyana's history.

And still those brain-boxes in the government do not see the necessity of shutting down the two regions which are accounting for more than 70 percent of new infections.

Yesterday, seven more persons died, all of whom were unvaccinated. And of the 161 new cases, 29 were severe enough to require hospitalisation. This is three times what one expects.

There are 37 persons in the COVID ICU Unit. Does the country have enough ventilators for these persons?

Guyana is facing a coronavirus storm, similar to what India faced earlier this year and which forced a lockdown on the subcontinent. But do not dare mention lockdown to our pro-bourgeoisie government. It is not contemplating any lockdown, regardless of whether this forces the cancellation of Christmas.

It appears that Guyanese are destined for another home-alone Christmas. The rapid rise in confirmed coronavirus cases now almost certainly will mean that the pandemic will still be raging in the country during the Christmas holidays.

This will mean yet another restricted Christmas.

Those who are longing for a return to the staff parties, office socials and visiting friends and relatives as in the past, will be sorely disappointed, unless they plan to breach the regulations as some did in 2020.

We all know how that ended. There was a spike in coronavirus cases in January with an almost 50 percent increase in cases even though the deaths remained constant.

That spike in January – no doubt caused by last year's Christmas revelries – has continued right through to today, eight months after.

Instead of exiting the pandemic and preparing for a normal Christmas, Guyanese are once again looking at having to be battened down in their homes for Christmas 2021.

All indications are that this year's Christmas will be

dismal. Coronavirus waves are usually represented on a bell-shaped curve. It takes a long time to plateau, meaning when cases and deaths spike, they do not decline rapidly; usually taking months to taper off.

It is not likely that, given what is taking place in the country at present, that the present controversial measures can be relaxed anytime soon, if at all, and definitely not in time to save Christmas.

Cases are not only rising in Guyana. They are rising in other countries around the world. But Guyana's deaths are worrying when compared to other places which are slowly returning to normalcy.

E a r l i e r t h i s y e a r, Wembley Stadium had a large capacity crowd to witness the finals of Euro 2020. This week's final day of the 4th Test Match between England and India was held to an almost full Oval house.

And at present, the US Open is being hosted with a live audience in attendance.

This is happening because despite the recent rise in cases. The number of deaths in the US does not correspond to the increase in new infections and is way below what existed in the winter.

While the US, India, the UK, Indonesia and even Brazil are witnessing improvements, Guyana is in poor shape with the highest number ever of active cases, highest weekly death rate and rising infections.

What is worrying is the high percentage of elderly who are dying despite Guyana's Vice President,

Bharrat Jagdeo, indicating that he was told that 82 percent of persons over the age of 62 years had been vaccinated. Jagdeo should undertake an independent verification of these numbers because if what he was told is correct, the death rate of the elderly should not have been as high as it is at present.

So the American ambassador tries to get a permit to fly out the body to meet a funeral deadline in the US but can't get the permit and he yelled out, “So much money we put in Italy yet it doesn't work.” Please see

Is there anyone in this country that could look Guyanese in the eyes and deny that the words of the US Ambassador and that statement in the letter were not published in the press 10 or 15 years ago?

That is why in the opening lines of this article, I asserted that a columnist would see in more graphic details the growing and expanding stagnation of a country because he/she would have written about those archaic things decades ago that still exist.

This country is entering a new era where the level of foreign money coming in will be far more extensive than in previous decades.

Obviously, you cannot have the same kind of bureaucracy handling that level of investment as 20 years ago.

The Ambassador talks about “lengthy timelines for permits.” How many times

we in Guyana have not heard those identical words going back to the Hoyte era and those words keep ringing in our ears in the 21st century?

What the envoy does not know is while her o ff i c e r e c e i v e s complaints from investors and her office intercedes with Frederick Kissoon the relevant authorities, the small Guyanese a dvice to President Ali. It investors have no one to turn to. For these small will work and it will open his business folks to get a permit eyes to the radical overhaul is not a lengthy process but he has to make to this country. $111M in contracts awarded for rehabilitation of roads in Wakenaam The contracts were awarded to A.M.I.C General Contracting Services and IB Contracting and Machinery Rental on Monday at the Ministry of Public Works Boardroom the Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar handed over the contract and in attendance, the Minister Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall was present at the hand over.

Contracts to the value of approximately $111M were signed on Monday for the rehabilitation of roads in Wakenaam, Region Three.

The public tender awards were made to A.M.I.C General Contracting Services for the rehabilitation of Maria Johanna to Ridge Main Access Road, Wakenaam, at a contract sum of $48,220,975, while IB Contracting and Machinery Rental won the award for the rehabilitation of Caledonia to Zeelandia Main Access Road, Wakenaam, for the sum of $62,782,563.

These road rehabilitation works have an estimated duration of four (4) months to be completed, and is an indication of the Government of Guyana's commitment to improving the livelihood of its citizenry. During a community meeting with residents in Maria Johanna a few months ago, Minister within the Ministry of Public Wo r k s , D e o d a t I n d a r, committed to ensuring the rehabilitation of the main

carriageway of Wakenaam.

In merely three weeks, that pledge is becoming a reality.

Minister Indar stated that the main access roads in Wa k e n a a m a r e i n a deplorable state and is in need of urgent fixing.

The Minister assured Wakenaam residents that the road upgrades will commence as soon as the contractors setup their equipment.

During a recent trip, the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall visited Wakenaam to get a first-hand view of the road rehabilitation works to be executed.

Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday Minister Indar noted, “The roads here, would not have been maintained for the years.” He shared that a mobilised bond owned and operated by the contractors is set to be transported to Wakenaam to commence the operations of the new road upgrades.

Berbice Bridge workers protest over OSH breaches

M

embers of the G u y a n a Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), yesterday, at the Berbice Bridge Company Inc., staged a picketing exercise outside of the facility calling on the management of the company to respect the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act. The workers are upset over the refusal to replace Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) damaged during the course of their work. Attempts made by the union and workers of the BBCI to have their damaged PPE replaced have been refused by management.

Workers shared that they learnt the company's leading manager is reported to have said that the workers have received their PPE entitlements and should p u r c h a s e a n y replacement. Those sentiments deeply agitated the workers, specifically for the fact that they recognise their rights are being trampled upon. On this score, it is appropriate to point out that Section 46(1) (a) of the OSH Act says, 'An employer shall ensure that the equipment, materials and protective devices and clothing as

prescribed are provided'. It appears that the management team is either ignorant of the OSH Act, or is neglecting the rights of the workers.

Whatever the case may be, it cannot be accepted, because of the potential exposures and dangers involved.

Moreover, it is irresponsible that the management would wish to expose itself to such a liability, namely, to send workers to the job without adequate protection opens the BBCI to unnecessary liability should a worker sustain any injury, which could be avoided by the provision of proper PPE. Joining the workers was the BBCI director, Faizul Jafferally who expressed his solidarity and support.

Jafferally stated he was disturbed that the workers' rights were being violated.

The GAWU and the workers used the opportunity to engage Director Jaferally on other issues, which the union has been addressing with management for some time.

Jaferally committed to the union and the workers that he would seek to have the board address these issues within a short time.

$1M bail for driver who allegedly caused death of teen crossing road Thirty-six-year- old Delroy Mitchell, of Nismes, West Bank Demerara, was on Monday placed on $1M dollars bail for allegedly causing the death of an 18year-old boy, while he was crossing the road.

The matter was called in the Diamond/Grove Magistrate's Court before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman. The indictable charge was read to Mitchell and he was not required to enter a plea. The charge stated that on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he

drove in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Aurelio Crighton of Eccles, East Bank Demerara.

The Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was then applied, allowing Mitchell to enter a plea to the charge.

As such, the charge was then re-read to the defendant, who then pleaded not guilty.

Principal Magistrate Latchman then granted the defendant $1M bail, and the matter was adjourned to September 29, 2021.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a report had stated that around 22:50hrs

on the date mentioned in the charge, Toyota Corolla NZE, HD 2455, which was being driven by Mitchell, reportedly crashed into the teen while he was on the pedestrian crossing, heading east from the western end of the crossing.

The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he died while receiving medical attention.

The driver was arrested, placed in custody, and subsequently served with a notice of prosecution.

PCOS is most common cause for infertility among women - local support group hosts month of awareness activities

ccording to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of infertility in women. Yet, a large group of women is still unaware of the condition, its effects, and dangers to their health.

In Guyana, PCOS is not often openly discussed but as with other reproductive health conditions, it affects quite a number of women in Guyana.For this reason, o rg a n i s a t i o n s l i k e t h e Cysterhood SupportGuyana, a local non-profit that caters to women living with PCOS has been using its resources, particularly during the month of September, which is designated as PCOS Awareness Month, to raise awareness and increase education about the condition.

This month, the group will educate the public,

particularly girls and young women, about PCOS and PCOS-related issues.

According to Kimberley Manbodh, Chief Executive O ff i c e r ( C E O ) o f t h e Cysterhood SupportGuyana, the sensitisation activities will include spreading information through the virtual question and answer segment; its (wear) teal Tuesday activity where persons can wear that colour to show support for those affected by PCOS and its advocacy Sunday event.

Information on the activities is publicised via the group's social media (Facebook) platform.

Throughout September, the support group is looking to engage the public in interactive ways via the various awareness sessions.

A c c o r d i n g t o information received by the Guyana Police Force, a squad of police men visited the Leonora Cottage Hospital after a report was made that a man who was allegedly wounded was admitted. The information revealed that a 46-year-old male driver of Tuschen reported that he was driving his Canter motor vehicle along the Brother Dam,

Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, Region Three about 17:30hrs when he encountered a crowd gathering.

Noticing the crowd, the driver said he stopped to see what had happened and there he saw a man lying on the road in a pool of blood. When the driver made closer contact to the man, he saw wounds to the right side of his face and at the back of his head. The driver then placed the injured man into the tray of his Canter and took him to the Leonora Cottage

Information received from the doctor states the victim's condition is stable, and he is expected to be transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, for further treatment.

Based on additional information, it was stated that the wounded man was apparently in a fight. Police went to the home of a man who was suspected in the incident, but he was not there. The investigation continues.

To help diagnose PCOS and rule out other causes of symptoms seen, the CDC said that doctors must explore a patient's medical history and do a thorough physical exam along with different tests, which includes: physical exam of body mass index (BMI), waist size, skin for extra hair on face, chest or back, acne, or skin discoloration or any hair loss or signs of other health conditions, such as an enlarged thyroid gland.

Pelvic exam for signs of extra male hormones is also recommended, for example, for an enlarged clitoris.

Meanwhile, the CDC emphasized that there is no cure for PCOS, but the symptoms of PCOS can be managed. “A treatment plan is developed based on a person's symptoms, desire to have children, and risk of long-term health problems,” the information added.

Man shopping with counterfeit money gets gunshot to back

One of three men who went shopping on Monday with counterfeit money at the HUA Chinese Supermarket located along the Diamond Access Road, East Bank Demerara, (EBD) left with a gunshot wound to his back.

Police have identified him as Shaquille Dalrymple, 26, of Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown. Dalrymple, according to investigators, was shot sometime after 20:00hrs.

A release sent out by the Guyana Police Force (GPF)

detailed that the injured man was shot by a security guard of the supermarket. The security guard was reportedly forced to open fire after one of the men, who was shopping with Dalrymple, shot at the cashier who tried to prevent them from leaving with the items that they had purchased.

Investigators reported that Dalrymple and two men had entered the supermarket around 20:00hrs that evening. They reportedly purchased a number of items and paid for them with two $5000 bills. As they were leaving the building with the items, stated the GPF, the cashier checked the bills and realised that they were counterfeit.

The cashier reportedly confronted them about the money, but they ran towards a car that was parked by the roadside. The GPF release further noted that the cashier pursued them, and stood in front of their car blocking their path.

One of men sitting in front passenger seat reportedly opened fire at the cashier. It was at this point, according to the GPF that the

security guard decided to respond by shooting at the car. Dalrymple, who was reportedly about to enter the back seat of the vehicle, fell to ground, while the others drove off leaving him behind.

The police were summoned to the scene immediately after the shooting. When ranks arrived, Dalrymple was reportedly still lying on the ground and groaning in pain.

In a cellphone recorded video posted on Facebook, ranks could be heard saying, “Look, bring the vehicle, we have to take this man to the hospital”.

He was picked up by the cops and placed in the back of their pick-up. As they lay him down in the pick-up's tray, one of the ranks was seen examining the gunshot wound to his back with a torchlight.

It appeared as if the bullet had struck Dalrymple to his lower back.

GPF stated that its ranks took the injured man to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was admitted under police guard.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

Qualified persons being paid deplorable rate of salary – AG According to the Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, qualified persons in the Public Sector are being paid a deplorable rate of remuneration. To this end, he noted that he hopes that the issue could be addressed across the public sector.

The AG was at the time speaking during an interview, which he had with Globespan, when he made that disclosure.

In fact, they are being paid a deplorable rate of remuneration and I hope we can address that across the Public Sector, in terms of all of our professionals or else they will continue to haemorrhage outwards,” the Minister stated.

COVID-19 claims lives of 7 more persons

T

he Ministry of Health yesterday announced that seven more persons, who tested positive for the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) virus, have died. As a result of this, the country's COVID-19 death toll has moved to 654.

According to the Ministry, the latest fatalities are that of a 62-year-old man, and six women, an 88year-old, an 87-year-old, an 84-year-old, a 73-year-old, a 43-year-old, and a 31-yearold, all from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

The Health Ministry also reported that all seven persons died over a two-day period (September 6 to 7), while receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Meanwhile, in its daily COVID-19 dashboard, the Ministry within the last 24hour period recorded 161 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 26,772. Out of the number of confirmed cases, 13,879 persons are women, while 12,893 are men.

A breakdown of new cases per Region shows that Region Four leads with 73

new cases, Region Three with 49, Region Two with 19, Region Five with eight, Region 10 with four, Region Seven with three, Regions Nine and Six with two each, and Region One with one.

Presently, there are 37 patients, who are admitted into the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 136 persons are in institutional isolation, 2,249 are in home isolation, and eight are in institutional quarantine.

To date, a total of 23,696 persons who tested positive for the virus have recovered.

Taxi driver fights off passenger who attempted to rob him A 24-year-old taxi driver was on Monday evening caught in an altercation with a passenger, who was in possession of a firearm and attempted to rob him of his gold chains.

According to a police report, the incident happened at Mora Camp, Potaro Road, Bartica around 19:00 hours. It was stated that the taxi driver received a phone call around 18:50hours requesting a pickup in front of the Bartica Hospital.Kaieteur News understands that the taxi

driver, upon arriving there, was approached by a man with plait hair, wearing a mask and tope, who entered his vehicle in the front seat and further requested to be taken to Mora Camp. The suspect, upon approaching his destination, drew a black handgun on the driver, and attempted to relieve him of the gold chains from around his neck.

The driver who refused to give up his possessions wrestled the firearm away from the suspect, and in the process hit him to the head

twice with the said firearm, during which a round was discharged. The suspect then escaped the vehicle and fled the scene.

The firearm, a .32 Taurus pistol with its serial number filed off, was handed over to police officers at the Bartica Police Station by the taxi driver. The area was then searched, but the suspect was not located. However, a black tope, which is believed to be owned by the suspect, was found at the scene.

Police investigations are in progress.

Rape accused who allegedly consumed poisonous substance, hospitalised A man, who was arrested earlier this week based on rape allegations, was yesterday admitted to the Skeldon Public Hospital, after he alleged that he had consumed a poisonous substance some time before he was arrested.

The police reported that the man was arrested on Monday around 14:25hrs and was in custody at the Springlands Police

Station. However, the following morning, while checks were being made on the prisoners, he reportedly complained of stomach pains, and told ranks that he had ingested a poisonous substance earlier in the day. As such, around 01:00hrs yesterday, he was taken to the hospital, where he was admitted and remains under guard at the said medical institution.

MP Figueira should show the...

From page 5 vaccination in the fight against this pandemic. However, if Figueira has the information, I think we would all like to know who conducted this research and when and what herbal remedies were used.

After all, Figueira is supposed to serve the people, so if he knows of an alternative to deal with the spread of the COVID-19 virus which has been proven to work, he should tell the people of Guyana as it would be of great help.

In the meanwhile, I ask that Guyanese continue to ignore this nonsense being spewed by the coalition ever so often to deter people from taking the vaccines.

But Figueira’s utterances and Dr. Karen Cummings’ expression of opposition support for the vaccination effort made on the same day are examples of the sort of deception being employed by the opposition - say one thing publicly and do the complete opposite behind the scenes.

Editor, I want to remind everyone reading this that the COVID-19 vaccines have been scientifically proven to be the most effective form of medicine used for combating the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

It is for this very reason that the World Health Organization (WHO) is recommending that everyone gets vaccinated. If there was indisputable evidence that another

alternative to the vaccines is herbs, then I am positive that the WHO would have recommended that people use them, rather than source vaccines.

The truth is that herbal remedies can only strengthen the body, but cannot fight the COVID-19 virus on its own, as is suggested by Figueira.

This just goes to show how barefacedly the entire APNU+AFC continues to lie and spread misinformation, all for the sake of disrupting the Government’s vaccination campaign. I make the call once again to MP Figueira: show us the evidence of your claims that herbal remedies have led to people in Guyana recovering from COVID-19.

uring the opening of tenders yesterday at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), two companies submitted Expressions of Interest (EoIs) for three road projects in Region One, which falls under the Ministry of Local Ministry of Public Works Consultancy Services for Geotechnical Investigations for the Design of the Bartica to Timehri Road Link.

Lawyers argue over process used to appoint G/Town interim Town Clerk T

he arguments in the court case filed over the appointment of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council's (M&CC) Interim To w n C l e r k , C a n d a c e Nelson, got underway on Monday before Justice Joann Barlow at the High Court.

During the proceeding, lawyers Teni Housty and Pratesh (CV) Satram raised contentions over the process used to appoint Nelson to the interim position.

In his presentation, Satram who is representing the interest of the Local

Government Commission (LGC), the body responsible for appointing Nelson, submitted that though the decision was initially made by two officers of the LGC, it was subsequently ratified by the committee at a meeting on August 23,2021.

Satram claimed that the procedure for appointment by the LGC as an independent body allows it to make the decision, without any consultation f r o m t h e G e o rg e t o w n Council.

The lawyer claimed too that the LGC would have made the necessary

considerations based on “eligibility and suitably” of the candidate before appointing Nelson to the position.

As such, the attorney asked the court to respond affirmatively to his application filed to strike out the legal challenge over the appointment of the interim Town Clerk at the earliest possible time.

However, in response to Satram's contentions, lead attorney for the City Council, Housty, argued that the LGC is liable to consult with the M&CC before any appointment is made.

According to Housty, the cooperation between the Council and the LGC is enshrined in the Municipal and District Council's Act. The lawyer told the court that a section of Municipal and District Council's Act indicates the role, and the process for identifying such a person to sit as Town Clerk.

He claimed that the consultation does not take a w a y f r o m t h e independence, rather it is in keeping with the “fundamental principles or due process,” that is undertaken in such appointments.

On behalf of the M&CC, Housty, along with attorneys Nigel Hughes and Konyo Sandiford, had asked the court to grant an interim order staying or suspending the implementation of the LGC's appointment of Nelson until the hearing and determination of the application.

On Monday, Justice Barlow told the attorneys that she will not be granting interim application but will look to rule on the merits of the case, as soon as possible.

As a consequence, Justice Barlo w s ch edu led th e decision in the matter for Monday, September 13, 2021.

On July 27, 2021, the LGC demoted Sherry Jerrick to Deputy Town Clerk for reportedly not performing her duties satisfactorily.

LGC commissioners reportedly voted to revert Jerrick to her previously held position, and later made a decision to appoint Nelson as the Interim Town Clerk.

The Council had moved to the High Court to block the recent appointment of Nelson as Interim Town Clerk.

According to documents filed through the Council's legal team, the claimant, Nelson, since her installation as Acting Town Clerk, “has taken a number of disruptive actions, which pose serious ongoing breaches that compromise the sanctity of the operations of the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown.”

Furthermore, according to the court documents, Nelson sought to suspend a tendering process

commenced months prior to July 28, 2021, and has allegedly sought to influence the records of statutory meetings of the M&CC of Georgetown by deleting matters from minutes of meetings, as well as seeking to dictate the contents of the agendas for subsequent meetings of the council.

“It is feared that if the implementation or further implementation of the decision is not suspended, Candace Nelson will further disrupt the activities of Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown,” the grounds for the application stated.

Moreover, it is being claimed that the conduct of Nelson, who is purportedly acting under the power of the LGC is “inimical” to the best interests of the M&CC, the infrastructure of the City of Georgetown, and the residents of Georgetown.

Citing that Nelson is acting without proper authority, the Council said that her actions have had a disrupting effect on the smooth and efficient functioning of the M&CC.

Daniil Medvedev beats Botic van de Zandschulp to reach US Open semi-finals BBC Sport - Second seed Daniil Medvedev ended qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp’s battling run to reach the US Open semi-finals and keep his bid for a maiden Grand Slam trophy alive.

The Russian raced through to a two-set lead but Van de Zandschulp, despite looking exhausted, hit back.

In a way, though, what happened in the second set likely earned Brooksby more admiration both from the crowd and his fellow players despite ultimately losing it, 6-3.

When Djokovic inevitably raised the level of his game to begin the second set, hitting his groundstrokes with more pace and accuracy while accepting that he was going to have to win long rallies, Brooksby didn’t back down.

Novak Djokovic ends US Open hopes of promising 20-year-old American Jenson Brooksby USA Today - NEW YORK — There aren’t many people on planet Earth who are up to the sheer physical effort it takes to beat Novak Djokovic in a best-of-five set

match.

Maybe one day, when 2 0 - y e a r- o l d A m e r i c a n Jenson Brooksby’s body fully matures and he can add a few miles per hour to that

serve, he’ll have the tools to be one of them. Because for nearly two hours under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, the youngster from Sacramento

showed what was possible.

Then, in a 45-minute sprint to the finish line, Djokovic showed who’s boss.

It certainly wasn’t easy for Djokovic, trying to complete the exceedingly rare calendar Grand Slam, to n e u t r a l i z e B r o o k s b y ’s unconventional game break his willingness to fight past the point of exhaustion. But eventually, as most do, Brooksby could only go on so long as Djokovic pulled away to a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory that sends him into a quarterfinal matchup Wednesday against No. 6 seed Matteo Berrettini.

Not too often has Djokovic had to work so hard this early in a Grand Slam to win a match that failed to go five sets and didn’t even feature any tiebreakers. Then again, he’s only lost a set as lopsided as 6-1 five times in his entire history at the majors.

But that’s the level of complication Djokovic had to deal with from Brooksby, who just recently moved into the top 100 in the rankings after reaching the final at Newport in July and the semifinals in Washington in August, earning some highquality wins over the likes of two-time Grand Slam finalist Kevin Anderson and No. 15 Felix AugerAliassime.

All of that, combined with the pressure on Djokovic as he gets ever closer to a record 21 major titles, set up an interesting scenario at Ashe, where the fan support for Djokovic during this tournament has been tepid to the point of annoyance.

In fact, though, when the night session began Monday, it was Djokovic who got the far larger ovations against a player mostly unknown to the crowd here. It didn’t take long, however, for them to

figure out what Brooksby is all about.In a display that seemed to stun and disorient Djokovic, Brooksby came out flying around the court, using his athleticism and quick hands to return shots that would normally draw errors and drawing Djokovic into rallies that clearly flustered him. Royals return to winning ways against Warriors CPL - The Barbados Royals claimed their second win of the 2021 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with a 45 run victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

A strong all-round display from the Royals keeps their playoff hopes alive with three group games remaining.

The Amazon Warriors never really recovered from a blistering start from the Royals batsmen who put their bowlers under real pressure after being asked to bat first.

The Royals innings started quickly with 67 runs from the PowerPlay with Johnson Charles (40) and Kyle Mayers (36) getting their team firing early on. The Amazon Warriors pegged things back with the wickets of Mayers and Azam Khan but a stand of 48 between Glenn Phillips and Smit Patel put the Royals back in front.

Phillips top scored with 44 and he was well supported

by Jason Holder who made

22 from just seven balls.

When both fell within quick succession the Royals innings lost some impetus but they still posted a very competitive 185/8.

Romario Shepherd was once again the pick of the Amazon Warriors bowlers, claiming 3/31 from his four overs. Gudakesh Motie bowled with penetration to claim 2/33.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors reply started badly with three wickets falling inside their PowerPlay as they reached 39/3 off the first six overs.

While wickets fell it was Mohammad Hafeez who looked to hold things together for the Warriors. He made it to 30 from 25 balls before he was well stumped

by Smit Patel off a wide bowled by Ashley Nurse.

When Hafeez fell the Amazon Warriors needed 115 runs from 65 balls and the pressure was on Shoaib Malik to see his side home.

“Cricket gear for young and GCB President confident promising cricketers in Guyana” Guyana will host ICC Under-19 US based Berbician latest World Cup 2022 matches

Hon. Minister Charles Ramson A team of officials representing the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) visited Guyana over the past weekend to inspect venues ahead of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2022. Guyana, through Hon. Minister Charles Ramson had submitted a bid to host the initial stage of the ICC Under-19 World Cup. The venue inspection was aimed at determining Guyana’s readiness for this major international event.

The ICC team included a number of planning experts in Ben Leaver, Joanna Taylor, Andy Atkinson, Ruchika Rana, Hamish Roberts and Roberto

Almansa. The CWI representatives were To u r n a m e n t D i r e c t o r Fawwaz Baksh, Event Manager KJ Singh, Head Curator Kent Crafton and Representatives Krystal Jean-Baptiste and Marcus Francis. They were joined by GCB’s officials: Hon. Secretary Ronald Williams, Chief Executive Officer/Public Relation Officer Claude Raphael, Assistant Secretary Devteerth Anandjit, Technocrat on Marketing and Financing Anil Beharry and Territorial Development O ff i c e r C o l i n S t u a r t .

Experienced Venue Manager Sabrina Panday was also present.

On Saturday September 4, 2021 the team visited the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, the GCB’s LBI Facility, Malteenoes Sports Club, Guyana Defence Force Ground and Enmore Community Centre. Similar inspections were conducted on September Sunday 5, 2021at Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), Everest Cricket Club and Police Sports Club.

he Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Hon Charles Ramson Jr. and the National Sports Commission wish to extend sincere condolences to Olympian Chelsea Edghill and family on the passing of her father Godfrey Edhill.

The Commission is cognizant of the role the senior Edghill played in guiding Chelsea to this present juncture where she is considered one of the best table tennis players in the Caribbean, Central and South America, a release informed.

Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle has reached out to Miss Edghill in relation to how the NSC can assist at this time.

The NSC has postponed a dinner for Olympians, the bodybuilders and powerlifters that was planned for this Friday at the Mirage Banquet Hall as a mark of respect.

The American based Guyanese provided cash support for project: “Cricket G e a r f o r Yo u n g a n d Promising Cricketers in Guyana” According to Beharry, the cash provided by Harkishun will be used to purchase one pair batting gloves to be added to the list of cricket gear for this initiative.

The pair expressed their gratitude to the donor and promised to continue to serve cricket in Guyana.

Harkishun said that he is delighted to be part of this initiative and will continue to do so over time.

The aim is to provide Cricket gear free of cost for young and talented cricketers in Guyana. The project is seeking new and used cricket gear which will then be distributed across the length and breadth of Guyana.

Total cricket related items collected so far: cash for first aid kit and one pair of batting gloves, two cricket boots, twelve pairs of batting pads, twelve bats, nine pairs

Sixteen young players from Essequibo Coast, Pomeroon and the East Canje area have already benefited from a junior gear bag, five bats, six pairs of batting pads and four pairs of batting gloves. Two clubs in Pomeroon will so benefit from two used bats.

Talent spotting will be done across Guyana along with guidance from club leaders to identify the players. Players must be in school and discipline.

Players above school age will also be considered.

Beharry said as a youngster playing cricket in Berbice he saw first-hand how many talented teenagers were forced give up the game

they loved because they could not afford to get to practice.

“Getting their own cricket gear for many of them was just a dream. With this project we hope to help some of the youth who are unable to fund their academic and Cricket career and hopefully if they make it ‘big’ they help others who are travelling on that same path they are on presently,” the former left-arm spinning all-rounder explained.

Georgetown Football Association, ATC up and running Coach Mills impressed with response to date

ouths within the jurisdiction of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) like their counterparts in the East Bank and Bartica Football Associations have shown their eagerness and excitement to be back on the field as the GFA kicked off their Academy Training Centre on September 2nd, last.

Technical Development Officer (TDO) for Georgetown, Vurlon Mills informed that two sessions have been held so far and they have received the full support of the GFA which now owns the ATC as the

national body, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has handed over full ownership to all nine (9) Regional Member A s s o c i a t i o n s .

The first session on September 2nd attracted 86 boys and 10 girls and was held at the Georgetown Football Club Ground and it was an open session. The sessions are being held for the Coaches to have an appreciation of the level of talent available to them before they start the selection process of having the best kids in the ATC. The second session on September 4th at the same venue saw an increase in the boys turn out with 98 attending, there was 10 girls

13-member West Indies Women’s squad selected for first two CG Guyanese Gajnabi, Fraser, Insurance ODIs Shabika Gajnabi, Grimmond included ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Women’s Selection Panel has announced the West Indies Women’s 13member squad for the first and second CG Insurance ODIs against South Africa Women. The panel also confirmed the 18-member provisional squad for the Series which will be played from September 7 to 19 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) and Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground (SVCG).

The opening match was a day/night game under lights yesterday starting at 2:45pm local time (1:45pm Jamaica Time). The remaining four CG Insurance ODIs are day games starting at 10:00am local time (9am Jamaica Time).

Experienced off-spinner Anisa Mohammed will serve as captain as Stafanie Taylor is unavailable for the CG Insurance ODI series. Taylor returned home to Jamaica on a personal leave of absence after serving a period in isolation in Antigua due to being identified as a primary contact of a COVID-19 positive case in Jamaica.

Browne-John said: “The T20I series had some creditable performances and some of the young players have started to come through. Now that the CG Insurance ODI series is at hand, the players have to change their mindset and adjust to the longer format.

The squad shows a mix of experience and youth which is good for future development.”

The team will be looking to maximize the experience gained from the CG Insurance ODI series as they prepare for the ICC Wo m e n ’s Wo r l d C u p Qualifiers from November 21 to December 5 in Zimbabwe.

AAG forced to give up hosting rights for S.A. under-23 C/Ships

By Calvin Chapman The president of Athletics Guyana (AG), Aubrey Hutson, has revealed during a recent interview with Kaieteur Sport that Guyana will not be the host of the heavily anticipated South America under-23 championships due to a couple of reasons with logistics being the main bugbear.

Despite the covid-19 pandemic, Athletics Guyana has been able to host eight meets already for the 2021 season and Hutson had expressed his optimism in ‘the land of many waters’ ability to host the quadrennial track meet.

However, the hosting rights for the meet that is scheduled to be contested on October 9-10 this year was given up to Ecuador which had hosted the South American championships in May month-end to much

success despite the circumstances of the pandemic.

Hutson explained that, “Copa Airlines only has about two flights to Guyana per week so it would be very difficult for the other 12 South America countries to get to Guyana on time, especially with the limited options. Ecuador did a great job with the South America Senior Championships and although the meet may be pushed back by a week because of an ongoing event in Guayaquil, it is the best option right now.”

Hutson revealed that last weekend the AG held trials for the under-23 championships at the National Track & Field Center (NTFC), Leonora.

The event was not publicised and it was held with strict covid-19 compliance.

The second obstacle in the AG’s way is the condition

of the NTFC track which is state owned.

The administrator admitted that Athletics Guyana would’ve been looking to have rehabilitation and resurfacing works on the track underway by now but it is something that needs more time. “Our track really needs to be looked at, we are working with the government to get it done.

We also need to ascertain if the initial contractor ’s warranty is still valid before we engage a new contractor,” Hutson stated.

T h i s y e a r ’s S o u t h America under-23 championships is very important because it is the last qualification route for local up and coming track & field stars for the first ever Panam sports Youth Games that is scheduled for this November in Cali, Colombia.

The AG has given up the rights to host S.A. under 23 Championships this October.
