Catching up in the medical field The world of medicine is not confined to any one country. There have been drugs that were manufactured to cure certain ailments and some of these are now commonplace. At the same time, new drugs are emerging and these too are becoming common around the world. When the AIDS virus struck, the world was in confusion. That was some thirty years ago, long after the world fashioned its first test tube baby and after it had made an animal from the cells of a parent in a system called cloning. While there has not been serious pursuit of cloning largely because of ethical grounds the same cannot be said of other medical developments. Of course, if we were to look at cloning what we would find is the creation of a human with all the characteristics of the parent, right down to the physical appearance. The main argument is that man would be playing God and the consequences could be far reaching. But medical experts opted to look at the so-called benefits. They argued that there could be a ready supply of body parts in the event of surgery. And the possibilities are endless. Right now there are long lines for kidneys, hearts and even limbs, to the extent that the production of prosthetics is big business. But it is in the pharmaceutical industry that we see perhaps the greatest advancements. Syphilis, once a killer, is now treatable as are so many diseases that once meant a death sentence. When the first AIDS case was identified the victim merely died; there was no cure. Today, with a regimen of drugs affected people can live long healthy lives, the same way renal failure victims live long and healthy lives. Dialysis is a way of life. But not so long ago, this was a service that Guyana never offered. The then Heath Minister Gail Teixeira said that the reagents were too expensive, had a short shelf life and could not be stored because Guyana did not have many cases of renal failure. She was wrong, and many people died. Today dialysis is as commonplace as cold medicine and the country has far more renal failure cases than people once believed. The fact is that with private involvement Guyana’s medical development is moving apace, almost reaching levels that the foreign countries once monopolies. And this is how it should be. Many of our doctors have received training overseas and they returned with skills previously unknown in this country. Some remained overseas and became leading surgeons and cardiologists who would from time to time come to Guyana and offer of their services. Unfortunately, the report is that the government-run medical institutions do not seem too keen to accommodate the skilled visitor. Many reasons have been offered, prime among them is that the foreigner is here to upset the kingdom created by those who now head facilities. It is human nature to be selfish, to protect one’s gains. But it is basic sense to use all available skills for development. The nation still remembers the first kidney transplants in Guyana. This was a landmark for medicine in Guyana. They were performed at the Georgetown Public Hospital but something had to be horribly wrong for this surgery to be removed to a private medical institution. The complaint is that the authorities at the medical institution are not readily cooperative with the visiting surgeons. Perhaps there was good reason because it is now said that the mortality rate is higher than when the surgeries were performed at the public institution. Whatever the case, the country is about to perform even more kidney transplants because the groundwork has been laid and more surgeons, many of them Guyanese, are prepared to come for stints. We are now taking the bold step into the world of in vitro fertilization. Thirty-six years after the world saw the first such baby, Guyana recorded its first. This is an achievement that bodes well for people who want to be parents but who have medical issues. And the reports are that there could be more than fifty more in the coming months.

Letters... Where your views make the news

When a governing party is so cavalier about the institutional force at its disposal, it is time for all to do more than take note DEAR EDITOR, There comes a time when a nation must sit up and take note of where it is and do something to halt its deterioration. Sometimes a nation gets so tired of being abused, terrorized and pulverized by its government that it takes such a situation for granted. Government bullying becomes normative. We may be almost there in Guyana, but it’s not too late to do something about it. Take the following statement from a high government functionary that appeared in one of the daily newspapers. “If Mr. Granger thinks I am weak…You know, he has launched a countrywide protest exercise to hasten the government’s’ signature on a number of Bills. I would like Mr. Granger to know… and I am not threatening or warning anybody. I am just saying that he announced that these things will be peaceful and

so forth. If they are not peaceful and should there be any diversions from the peacefulness of any of those protest activities organized by Mr. Granger resulting in upsetting of the peace and good order of our country, then he will see who is really too weak to fight.” The above quote, attributed to Mr. Clement Rohee, appeared in the September 24 edition of Kaieteur News (APNU commences countrywide protests for Local Govt. Elections). Mr. Rohee was addressing the media at the P P P ’s w e e k l y P r e s s Conference. He was, therefore, speaking as PPP General Secretary. There are three things about that statement that need highlighting. First, Mr. Rohee seems upset at Mr. Granger’s statement that he is a weak leader. So he is signaling that he is prepared to use his authority in the government

to show that he is not weak. Second, Mr. Rohee is telegraphing how the PPP intends to deal with the APNU protests if it perceives them to be a diversion from “peacefulness.” There is more than a hint that punitive action will be a first resort or not far from it. It is also clear that Mr. Rohee, not law enforcement officers, would decide if and when the protests are no longer peaceful. Third, the statement gives the impression that should the protests cease being peaceful, Mr. Granger should expect to be confronted with Mr. Rohee’s show of strength. Mr. Rohee’s party is fond of reminding the world of the use of state force against opposition protests under a previous government. Yet it is now documented that PPP governments are no different. Mr. Rohee’s bold threat to the APNU leader is representative of an administration that has

gotten away with using in some cases deadly force against public protests. While not using the same language, Mr. Rohee’s statement can be compared to another leader’s 1979 statement calling on his opponents to make their wills. Rohee is brandishing the same “sharper steel.” When a governing party is so cavalier about the institutional force it has at its disposal, it is time for all to do more than take note. Let me end with this. If people protesting for their constitutional right to vote (in Local Government elections) have to do so with the constant threat of state force over their heads, then that protest is not peaceful to begin with. The government’s first duty is to protect its citizens, all of them, even when they are protesting against the government. Clearly Mr. Rohee does not think so. David Hinds

Jaya Manickchand reacts to the Welshman saga DEAR EDITOR, I have noted that in an affidavit to secure injunctive relief against allegations of sexual abuse made by Johnny Welshman, Raphael Trotman, Speaker of the N a t i o n a l A s s e m b l y, Politician and Attorney-atLaw, has sworn to certain matters claiming that the allegations made against him are politically inspired. I also notice that he has made public statements about events related to the said allegations claiming much the same thing. I also note that Stabroek News has written its story cleverly in a way that supports the claims being made by Trotman, to wit, that I am involved in some mysterious political plot to drag Trotman down. Their story highlights that I am the sister of Education Minister, Priya Manickchand, and that I was a former PPP GECOM commissioner, all facts, but positioned in such a way to lend credence to the claims made that this is a political plot. I cannot fail to notice, either, that the propagandists of the AFC have gone to work on social media

carrying and peddling the story of my being in some way involved in a political plot and all sorts of their usual nastiness. I have seen Trotman being very generous with offering comments on all and sundry, but he has failed to correct any of these propagandists, so one can only fairly assume they are acting on his behalf and according to his instruction. I am open to being proven wrong by Raphael publicly correcting his compatriots on all of their misinformation. In fact, I plead with him to so do, so that this sense of crushing disappointment in him that I have could be lifted and I could actually see him as the leader he holds himself out to be. Please allow me to state clearly for the benefit of the persons who have been contacting me and who are interested in the facts of this matter as far as my involvement is concerned. I was never RETAINED by Johnny Welshman in the ongoing matter with allegations against Raphael Trotman. I am not retained by him and I do not (present

t e n s e ) r e p r e s e n t M r. Welshman. Welshman tried making contact with me on Friday September 19, 2014 in the afternoon by visiting my Chambers. I was out of Chambers at the time he visited. I subsequently returned a telephone call to We l s h m a n , w h e r e h e disclosed certain information to me. At the time, Welshman spoke with me on Friday, September 19, 2014, he told me he had made a report at the CID. I never confirmed whether he made a report but I believed it to be true then. And I believed then, that given that a report was made, it would probably become a public matter soon. I told Johnny Welshman that the proper Attorney-atLaw to address complaints of a criminal nature is the DPP and that he should seek Counsel with the Chambers of the DPP. Based on certain information offered by Mr. Welshman, I offered to speak with Raphael Trotman to mediate between the parties about a likely “settlement” if it could have been met. I was still not retained by

Welshman. However, if having spoken to Raphael Trotman, I felt a settlement could be reached, then I would have considered facilitating that settlement. I thought it best to have Raphael deal with this matter privately because he has young daughters and I know allegations like the ones being made, can be hurtful to anyone, and particularly young, innocent girls. F u r t h e r, g i v e n w h a t Welshman told me and the manner in which he told me same, I felt that he too would best be served by the route he (Welshman) was proposing, that being a settlement. I sent Raphael SMS messages regarding Johnny We l s h m a n a n d h e subsequently called me later that night. Raphael and I had one telephone conversation regarding this entire matter. Based on that telephone conversation, I formed the opinion that there was no way I could have assisted further and recused myself from the entire matter. This information was communicated to Johnny Welshman via telephone. I have not met Johnny (Continued on page 24)

We must ensure the politicians use the power vested in them wisely and to our collective benefit DEAR EDITOR, People do not pick a right, equally as they do not negotiate a right. As such, it is not for President Ramotar, or any elected leader for that matter, to say to us we must exercise a choice. The Guyana Constitution is very clear when National and Regional elections are scheduled (every five years) and when Local Government Elections are scheduled (every three years). The Constitution also stipulates the extenuating circumstances and when either election can be called, within or outside of the scheduled timeframe. The Representation of the People Act outlines the procedures to manage and execute these elections. Those, including the president, seeking to misguide the people of this nation to think they have extra-constitutional authority, or their actions are consistent with the constitution, must not be allowed to continue this practice. While Members of Parliament, moreso the political opposition could have exercised greater vigilance, and partner with the diplomatic community, civil society and the people, in ensuring the 1st August extension for calling local government was honoured, we are here today and must

address this issue. One can debate the merit or demerit in the strategy of calling for local government elections when a noconfidence motion is before the National Assembly and up for attention when it reconvenes. What must not be up for debate is our right and having to believe we must be put in a position to choose one over the other. It is not a function of the constitution that local government elections have not be held for almost two decades. It is the dysfunction of those we have placed in positions of authority to manage our day-to-day affairs. One of the hazards of democracy is that it will throw up leaders illequipped and ill-informed to do the job. What often passes as political arrogance in this society are merely functions of ignorance of governance, the system of government we have, and how these ought to work in the interest of the people. No elected l e a d e r, i n c l u d i n g t h e president, has any authority under the constitution to dictate to the people, or engage in political immaturity. A Representative System of government, which ours is, would advise that leaders articulate and represent the interests of the people consistent with the frameworks, i.e. laws and

procedures, established to guide their deliberation, representation and execution. President Donald Ramotar and Leader of the Opposition David Granger have offered themselves to the electorate for leadership and are elected to office consistent with the Constitution and Representation of the People Act. As the nation’s two premier political leaders they are duty bound to this society to operate consistent with these instruments and we must hold them accountable. There must be no choice given for general elections or local government elections. The Constitution and Representation of the People Act stipulate how and when these can be conducted and we must be guided accordingly. This country is going through dangerous times and the people are called on to be ever so engaged and vigilant in looking out for their interests. We are witnessing a period when those who hold the reins of office obviously don’t know what they are about, or what they are doing. This situation is getting from bad to worse. The power vested in the politicians belongs to the people and we must ensure they use it wisely and to our collective benefit. Lincoln Lewis

I hope that this “never” position is publicly rescinded DEAR EDITOR, I was surprised by the recent utterance of the Chairman of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) that protests are “never” welcome as a dispute resolution tool. I’m not sure if this r ep r es en ts an o ff icial position of the PSC or it’s just a personal view being advanced by Mr. Persaud. Either way, it represents a line of reasoning and thinking that has no place in a democratic society. Protests have been used effectively the world over as an advocacy tool to address and bring attention to grievances and injustices and also to bring about

necessary social change in circumstances and societies where retardation and stagnation are occurring. Without protests, some of the world’s biggest injustices would not have received the necessary attention that ultimately led to the demise of those repressive structures. I f M r. P e r s a u d i s implying that PNCsanctioned protests result in violence, then he should have been specific to mention the history of such occurrences and plead with the APNU members to ensure that their call for protesting the absence of a timeline for local

government elections is accompanied by measures to ensure those protests are peaceful and do not infringe on the rights of other citizens. I hope that Mr. Persaud, or the PSC, can publicly rescind his “never” position. Only recently I attended a private sector discussion on counterfeit goods and the word protest was raised as an option if issues aren’t adequately addressed. I would urge the PSC not to discard any tool in its advocacy arsenal, for it might find it useful someday. Clinton Urling Executive Chairman Blue CAPS Inc.

St. Cuthbert’s Mission residents disgusted with how their village is being managed DEAR EDITOR, It is out of disgust and frustration that this letter is being written. Much to the disadvantage of our people who are mainly literate and educated, we have to cope with a few ruthless councillors left out of a total of ten along with the Toshao, who are now left to command the entire affairs of the village of St. Cuthbert’s Mission. The residents of this community are being excluded in decisionmaking, especially when it pertains to allocating funds for various projects. Often times these projects are not properly supervised with the Resort being a prime example of such incompetence and mismanagement, and which has not been completed to date, but rather is now covered with bush. As for our royalties which are derived mainly from logging, we are consistently told that there are no funds, despite the fact that logging is being conducted daily and the logging sheet is costly. Another disgusting act is the fact that many of our old residents who are too feeble and ill to move around are not afforded transportation even though a vehicle was assigned to the village, but is constantly seen serving

people’s personal needs. Residents are required to pay a fee, and these include pensioners, to transport what is already a meagre pension. Heritage Month is about to conclude and it sickens my stomach to once again have to witness this disgraceful behaviour of the Council, whose sole interest is to full their pockets. Another concern is the fact that residents have to strictly adhere to a decision to go to a special place to celebrate, all in the name of raising funds for the village and at the end of it all, despite the massive support, you are told that much is unaccounted for. Visitors have to pay a fee to enter and a separate fee for parking and when residents inquire what amount of money was made they are told that there was no profit. We are deemed trouble makers for making such inquiries and when we attempt to speak out we are treated with disrespect and called all sorts of names. These few uncaring leaders are surely should be held accountable for their wrongdoing. They are being supported by high-ranking officials and have been making a mockery of the Amerindian Act which has

ultimately left most of our problems unresolved. We believe that with the election for a Toshao due shortly, those in authority and who have been displaying an uncaring attitude towards the residents of the community should step down immediately. This election should be conducted properly and in a t i m e l y m a n n e r, w h i l e underage and non-residents should not be allowed to participate in the election. We the residents strongly feel that the last election was not conducted properly and therefore we are stuck with a leader who was not democratically elected. It is our hope that the current Council is scrutinized and sanitized before the next election since our young people, in the absence of meaningful activities, will continue to be involved in alcohol, drug abuse and criminal activities. We urge that those in authority look into the plight of the village or we will continue to suffer under those bent on selfadvancement and not the collective progression of the people of St. Cuthbert’s Mission. Concerned Resident

Venezuela opposition names new head to fight Maduro CARACAS (Reuters) Venezuela’s opposition parties yesterday named a 56year-old journalist and teacher to head their coalition ahead of 2015 parliamentary elections where they hope to weaken President Nicolas Maduro’s socialist government. “It was a unanimous decision to elect me, we’re all rowing in the same direction,” Jesus Torrealba said in a speech accepting leadership of an opposition movement that narrowly lost the presidency to Maduro last year and has been squabbling since. He replaces outgoing Democratic Unity coalition executive-secretary Ramon Guillermo Aveledo, who resigned in July, and faces a mammoth task to unite moderates and radicals who differ in their views on how to oppose Maduro. Torrealba, who was a member of the Communist Party in his youth, founded a

non-governmental organization called “Neighbourhoods’ Radar” and later had a programme of the same name on a proopposition TV station to denounce grassroots problems from potholes to burst pipes. In a nod to government accusations that Venezuela’s opposition leaders represent a rich elite out of touch with the masses, Torrealba said an outdoor rally would be held on Oct. 4 to begin a campaign of public mobilizations. “We’re going to build a better world and take on this regime,” he added to representatives of 27 opposition parties. “We’re building a new pact between the political leadership and the poor.” Venezuela’s opposition parties suffered from chronic in-fighting during a decade of the late President Hugo Chavez’s 1999-2013 rule, enabling him to outwit them

Jesus Torrealba over-and-over at elections. But, with Aveledo as the intellectual architect, they came together in the Democratic Unity coalition (MUD) for a 2009 legislative vote. Young governor Henrique Capriles fought and lost - two presidential elections on their behalf.

IMF delegation visiting Grenada ST GEORGE’S Grenada - CMC – A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in Grenada to assist with the development of fiscal responsibility legislation, according to an official statement issued yesterday. Earlier this year Grenada entered into a US$21.9 million agreement with the IMF under the structural adjustment programme it has with the Washington-based financial institution. The Mitchell administration has embarked on a three-year programme that is aimed at turning around an ailing economy and reducing the island’s high

debt that is estimated at more than EC $2 billion (One EC Dollar = US$0.37 cents) and low growth. The Government is now holding a series of discussions with various stakeholders, including the trade unions, the private sector, civil society groups as it prepares the 2014-15 national budget, to be presented to Parliament on November 28. The government statement said that the public has been invited to a seminar on Fiscal Rules on Thursday noting that under the “Homegrown Programme” and the Letter of Intent signed with the IMF the Government

“intends to seek parliamentary approval for fiscal responsibility legislation by the end of 2014”. It said the key focus is on expenditure control. “To this end, a team from the International Monetary Fund is currently in Grenada, at the request of the Government of Grenada, to assist with the development of Fiscal Responsibility Legislation,” the statement said, noting that at the end of the mission, the team will present a draft Fiscal Responsibility law to the Ministry of Finance for consideration and further consultation.

Guyana now has its own Emailgate. This has created a crisis in public trust, one that must be addressed as a matter of urgency by the opposition parties in Guyana. Leaked documents reveal a plot to destroy the Kaieteur News and to put its publisher away in jail for a long time. This is a most serious development and one that trumps the plans hatched in the 1960s by the CIA to kidnap Cheddi and Janet Jagan and exile them to Venezuela. Kaieteur News has been under threat for a long time. This is nothing new. But if what is revealed in the leaked emails are to be believed, then every business in this country, every citizen of this dear land, is under threat. Kaieteur News has always taken steps to protect itself from the power of the State and from those who wish to destroy it because of what the newspaper stands for and what it has been revealing about the governance of this country and the hijacking of the country’s economy by a small clique. Not everything that this newspaper knows has been made public because this newspaper has to protect its staff from harm and

Kaieteur News

victimization. But Kaieteur News knew long ago about the plans that were being hatched to destroy it and its publisher. Those behind the plot against Kaieteur News were not fooling anyone. Their schemes were known because there are enough decent individuals in this country who, regardless of their political persuasion, do not like to see the innocent punished. And so they have always provided this newspaper with information about the conspiracies being hatched against it. This newspaper, for example, knew from day one that video recording equipment was secreted by a member of the oligarchy in a building nearby Kaieteur News so as to monitor who was bringing information to this newspaper. Kaieteur News knew that from day one that it was being monitored. It also knew when the monitoring stopped and it took steps to entertain those who were videoing the company. It also knew where the footage was going because persons who came to this newspaper were questioned about why they were visiting the newspaper. Kaieteur News also knew that there was a plan hatched

to use the pages of this newspaper to attack its publisher who had offered a free column to the ruling party. The paper learnt that there was a plan to use this column to attack Glenn Lall. The emails recently released by this newspaper shows the depth to which those who wish to destroy this newspaper would go. But it is not Kaieteur News alone that is under threat. It is all Guyanese. When information that should be privileged is illegally disseminated then we have reached a stage in this country where nothing is safe. Every business in Guyana wants the information that is statutorily required to be submitted to the tax authorities to be kept confidential. No business in this country wants its competitors to know its turnover, its liabilities or the

tax its pays. That information is privileged and the tax authorities are required to not make it available to unauthorized persons and entities. The President himself does not have a right to individual taxpayers’ information. The President can only designate to which entity such general information should be made available to. This is only usually for purposes relating to the making of policy. In the making of policy, it may be necessary for example for taxes are to be waived for a sector and in so doing for the government to estimate what taxes will be lost or forgone. As such, the President may designate that the taxes paid for a particular sector be provided so as measure the impact of any concessions on overall taxes. But there is no known case of the President

Page 9

of any democratic country asking the tax authorities to provide anyone with information about what is the turnover, the liabilities and the taxes paid by individual players in a sector. The emails leaked to this newspaper indicate that information about most of the newspapers in this country was provided to an external source, someone who is close to the principal of a competitor within the sector. In recent times also commercial transactions of remigrants have been revealed to the State-owned newspaper. This should never have been allowed. This is an intolerable situation which requires an independent investigation. This is not just a question about professional ethics. There are professional associations which require professionals conduct themselves in a manner that does not bring the profession into disrepute. A person found

breaching an oath of secrecy can be disqualified from any professional associations to which he or she belongs. But more importantly, it is an offence under Section 4 the Income Tax Act of Guyana for there to be unauthorized release of information about taxpayers. This very section of the law that provides for such information to be privileged also creates an offense for the violation of secrecy. As such those guilty of such an offence may be prosecuted in a court of law. The first Order of Business when the National Assembly reconvenes should be a motion or resolution calling for an investigation into Guyana’s Emailgate.

=== The Freddie Kissoon column ===

Mo fyaah/slo fyaah, Indian style How different we are when the shoe is on the other foot. In 1995, UG students staged the most torrid and angry protest in the history of the University. It was more all inclusive than the one when the police shot and killed, UG student, Yohance Douglas. The triggering mechanism was the tearing up of the essays of the students in the class, Sociology 110 by the lecturer. One thing led to another and the students took to the streets and took over UG. It was a magical moment

at UG. At that time Donald Ramotar’s daughter, Lisa, was at UG and was a student of mine. We used to have frequent conversations. I found her to be quite unlike the politicians in the PPP her father’s generation belonged to. Lisa took part in day one of the protest. On the second day, I asked her why she was no longer in the demonstrations and she said she was told to cease her involvement. Lisa told me her father wasn’t too happy with the protest. Of course, he couldn’t. His party

was now in power. It was alright to burn sugar estates and kill policemen guarding the Corentyne toll station when the PNC was in power but now the PPP is in government, protest was bad. Of course the PPP is not alone in this desecration of the struggle against injustice. New leaders behave like this throughout history. Fidel Castro killed more of his critics than the man he overthrew, President Fulgencio Batista when Batista ruled Cuba.

The world famous singer and internationally respected peace activist, Joan Baez (certainly a favourite of mine; please listen to her song about the Pakistani genocide during the war against the birth of Bangladesh – one of the most painful songs ever composed) said last week that only two politicians she was ever overjoyed with – Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama. Now she says she isn’t sure about Obama. ‘This is politics. Opposition leaders egg on people to overthrow a

government and when they succeed, the overthrown government, they kill you for opposing them. So Uncle Donald pulled his “pickney” from the protest at UG in 1995 because Uncle Donald’s party was now in power. One wonders how Uncle Donald (I prefer the Kaieteur News appellation – De Donald – whatever that means) feels when he sees the rebirth of mo fyaah/slo fyaah, this time by the East Indian people. The historian must get one thing straight – it wasn’t the Desmond Hoyte opposition movement that invented slow fyah/mo fyaah. That rampart was birthed by the PPP on the sugar estates during the reign of Forbes Burnham. De Donald was definitely around when mo fyah/slo fyaah torched many GUYSUCO estates in the seventies because I was one of his comrades back then from the WPA. One wonders what is going through the mind of De Donald as he sees the invocation of Macbeth’s witches stoking the fire recently in Essequibo and Berbice. In these situations fire rose way into the skies. In the former, farmers demanded payment for the paddy and burned tyres. In the latter, the action was against crime when suspicious police material was found in a hit-and run vehicle. The car was torched. This week arson hit Skeldon estate as part of industrial action. Are these incidents of the

Frederick Kissoon Indian version of slo fyaah/ mo fyaah the working out of the contradictions of history and politics? The answer is yes. The answer lies in the time span of dictatorship. The longer a political cabal stays in power the strong possibility exists that it will become divorced from its radical origins, initial sacredness and sense of justice and eventually the country it dedicated to serve. The nakedness of this descent is graphic in India with the Congress Party, Zimbabwe, Angola and Cuba. In the case of Zimbabwe and Cuba, the longevity was indeed great and atrophy had to be a natural result. Castro was short by a few months of achieving fifty years as the boss man of Cuba. In Guyana, the PPP began to throw it away just a mere few years in power. But the difference with Mugabe, Castro and the Congress Party was morality. Mugabe, the Congress Party and Castro had a good twenty years of solid support. Not so with the PPP. From 1992, Jagan began to reveal what an unhistorical person he was. Jagan simply accepted the race divide and was happy to nurture both Indian and PPP hegemony. Jagdeo went crazy and maybe has destroyed this country. As for De Donald, unless the next election in 2015 throws him out, he may have to live with slo fyaah/mo fyaah, Indian style.

From page 4 Welshman in person to date, save and except when he consulted with me at the Children’s legal aid clinic a few years ago. In fact, I can only assume that Welshman sought me out because the Children’s Legal Aid Clinic had represented him. If the media or anyone says that I gave Raphael a heads up regarding this matter, that would be accurate. That heads up was in pursuit of what Welshman said he wanted and it may also have allowed Trotman to disclose this information to his family, to prepare them for the serious allegations which were about to hit the media, given that Welshman claimed reports had already been made at other agencies including the Police. I have chosen not to disclose the content of conversations I had with Johnny Welshman or with Raphael Trotman. Raphael is a colleague of mine and I will still extend to him that courtesy, whilst Welshman’s conversation, I believe, is privileged. I would have no problems, however, with Raphael disclosing IN FULL, the conversation we had, which to date he has failed to do, even in his affidavit for injunctive relief. Please let me state clearly. The words, “I am not RETAINED,” which is what I said

to the reporters, means that there is no contract between me and Johnny Welshman for me to provide legal services to him. “I DO NOT REPRESENT JOHNNY WELSHMAN,” which is what I said to the reporters as far as my record indicates, is present tense. At the time I spoke with Gordon Moseley and Stabroek News Reporter ( the only two reporters I gave statements to) which was approximately 11: 30 am on Sunday, 21st September, 2014, I had completely recused myself from the matter because, as stated earlier, I would have only gone forward and possibly become the Attorney-at-Law for Welshman if a settlement was being considered by both parties. As I could not provide further assistance in the matter, which I determined during and after the telephone conversation with Trotman, I had already recused myself from the matter when I spoke to the reporters and so there was nothing incorrect in that statement. Further, let me state clearly, I never denied speaking to or contacting Raphael as is the impression created by the SN. I just gave as a response “no further comment” to the question posed by the Stabroek News reporter as to whether I had made contact with Raphael Trotman. It baffles me that “no fur-

An attempt to mislead the public DEAR EDITOR, The Guyana Police Force is responding to a Letter to the Editor published in the Kaieteur News of Wednesday September 24, 2014, under the caption “When the police replace the DPP for a fee”. The Guyana Police Force wishes to state that on August 24, 2014, Rameena Persaud, of Vilvoorden, Essequibo Coast, reported to the police that she was assaulted by her husband, Latchman Bhodnarine. He was arrested on August 25, 2014 and charged on September 04, 2014 and was to appear at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on the

said date before Magistrate Sunil Scarce. However, Rameena Persaud nor Lathcman Budharine was in court when the matter was called up. As a result the Magistrate dismissed the case. A Suddie, Essequibo Coast resident who normally writes letters in the newspapers enquired from the police of the matter and he was provided with the facts. The police are of the opinion that he is the person who has attempted to mislead the public on this matter. Whitney Bacchus Senior Superintendent Public Relations and Press Officer

ther comment” could be considered as a denial. Is that media-speak with which I am unfamiliar or is this just the Stabroek News, in their haste to defend Raphael being creative. Now, whatever may have been Trotman’s motive for disclosing my text to him, that disclosure only supports what I have said in relation to my involvement in this matter. It clearly shows: 1. that I made contact with him; 2. that I indicated that I could only be useful to Johnny Welshman regarding his allegation if a settlement could be reached and, if not, that I would not be in the matter further; and 3. that I had, and still do have, a deep and abiding concern for the impact of the revelations on his family, particularly his young daughters. As for my opinion on the matter: I do not know whether Raphael Trotman sexually assaulted Johnny Welshman. If the allegation is false, then Welshman is one sick person and deserves urgent medical attention. BUT, if Welshman is telling the truth or even parts of the truth, doesn’t he deserve the opportunity to be heard fairly without Trotman’s interference and might and the interference of his friends? Give the justice system an opportunity to work. If it does, Trotman would have his chance to defend himself fully with all the might and considerable resources he enjoys. Stop trying to influence the

system by trying to frighten lawyers who may listen to, hear and be willing to mediate for a complainant. Stop trying to deflect from the allegation of sexual assault/buggery by making up that my involvement was political. Stop trying to take the spotlight off of you by trying to throw me under the bus and making me the issue. Do not deflect from the sex assault allegations. Defend them. Surely there is more in your defence than hanging onto and misusing my surname. Frankly, for myself, now that I have seen Trotman’s affidavit and the deliberate attempts by his social media and other buddies to sully me, I am left with all sorts of questions in my head. I would be happy to take a lie detector test as to whether my involvement in this matter was in any way sinister and/or meant to distract from the AFC’s no confidence motion and/or to bring down the Speaker of the House or the AFC and/or in any way politically motivated, inspired, directed or driven if Raphael is also going to take a lie detector test to clear, what he insists is, his good name. As I do not believe I can add any more to this that would help anyone interested in the truth as far as my involvement is concerned, this will be my last statement on the matter. Jaya Manickchand Attorney-at-Law

No evidence of a breach of the law DEAR EDITOR, The Guyana Police Force is responding to a Letter to the Editor published in the Kaieteur News of Wednesday September 24, 2014, under the caption “Bribery and Cover-ups”. The Force wishes to state that on September 12, 2014, at about 1100h. Naitram Doobay, a teacher of Pamona Secondary School, took two students of the said school to Aurora Police Station and reported that the students were smoking something. However the students denied

that they were engaged in such activity. The teacher did not seize the article the students were smoking. The police made further enquiries, but no useful information was provided. The children were therefore released and the teacher was advised to inform the School Welfare Officer since there was no evidence that a breach of the law had been occasioned. Kamla blanks latest request for meeting from Trinidad environmentalist P O R T- O F - S PA I N , Trinidad - CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has blanked the latest request for a meeting by environmentalist Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh, saying “there will be no productive outcome”. Kublalsingh, who is on an indefinite hunger strike outside the building housing the Office of the Prime Minister, had earlier this week sent a letter to the government indicating that he was prepared to travel to United States where the Prime Minister is attending the annual meetings of the United Nations General Assembly for the talks. Kublalsingh, the leader of the Highway ReRoute Movement (HRH) wants the government to stop the construction of the

Late pay at UWI Barbados Nation - There will be no pay this month for employees in a section of the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI). Tuesday, about 30 workers of the Cave Hill School of Business (CHSB) were summoned to a hurriedly called meeting with chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Jeannine Comma, who informed employees that they would not be paid their monthly salaries due today as was expected. According to one of the disgruntled workers, they were shocked to learn that their salaries would not be ready until sometime in midOctober. Requesting anonymity, the UWI employee told the MIDWEEK NATION workers were told that from ancillary staff to the chief executive officer would have to wait another two weeks before being paid their salaries.

Kamla Persad Bissessar Debe to Mon Desir segment of the multi-billion dollar (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) Point Fortin Highway. He said his new proposal follows talks with residents of the affected villages and that he believes the “optimum best solution for the Debe to Mon Desir highway can be quickly achieved and I would like to present this proposal to them if they agree to meet and have sincere dialogue…” But Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, w ho has already indicated that she has no desire of meeting with the environmentalist because the issue is before the courts, told reporters that the meeting being requested would be

unproductive. “There will be no productive outcome of such a meeting with respect to Dr Kublalsingh and I think we have stated our position clearly. There is no need for any such meeting,” Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar told local media representative covering her visit to the United States. Further she told the reporters that her schedule in the United States would not allow for the talks. “There’re so many important issues here at the moment,” she said, adding “such a meeting will be nonproductive. I have already stated our position with respect to the matter.

Health Ministry still in dark over Ramroop’s New GPC contract The Ministry of Health is still to be officially informed that New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation (GPC) has been selected as the sole locally prequalified supplier of drugs for the Guyana Government. This publication understands that Cabinet is yet to formally notify the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board of its non objection in writing. A senior official at the Tender Board yesterday explained that the Board would only inform procuring entities of its decision when it is informed in writing by Cabinet. Upon the formal notification by Cabinet to the tender board, it was explained that the procuring entity would be informed of the tender board’s decision “as soon as possible.” The Ministry of Health is still to be formally notified of the decision by tender board in favour of New GPC despite the fact that Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr

…Cabinet still to communicate ‘no objection’ to Tender Board - Source Roger Luncheon, making the announcement just over two months ago. Earlier this month, Leslie Cadogan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, publicly stated that the Health Ministry had not been officially notified of any awards, as it relates to the procurement of drug and medical supplies. He was at the time responding to a media report in another section of the media which highlighted the fact that the Health Ministry is still to inform the bidders as to the outcome of the prequalification evaluation, as is required by law. According to Cadogan, “As soon as the Health Ministry is officially notified, both successful and unsuccessful bidder(s) will be informed.” Dr. Roger Luncheon, last

July, announced that the tender board found that the new GPC was the only supplier that met all of the requirements set out in the revised criteria. The New GPC is owned by Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop who happens to be the best friend of former President, Bharrat Jagdeo. That company has been supplying the bulk of the drugs to Government for the past 15 years, ever since it was acquired by Ramroop in 1999. This decision was met with staunch protestation by other suppliers and other stakeholders. International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA), headed by Lloyd Singh has also approached the courts to quash the decision announced by Dr Luncheon. Chief Executive Officer of IPA, Lloyd Singh, in his legal

challenge to the tender board decision claims that the move by the Ministry was discriminatory of itself, or in its effect and decision. He further argued that the decision by the Ministry was unconstitutional, in that it violated Article 149 and as such, has asked that the court orders the decision that New GPC be the sole prequalified supplier of drugs and medical supplies, null and void. Singh’s petition is also seeking “a declaration that the revised evaluation criteria for prequalification for the supply and delivery of pharmaceutical drugs and medical supplies for the period 2014-2016, are so heavily and obviously weighted in favour of a particular local supplier of pharmaceutical drugs and medical supplies to the government, that it renders

the prequalification process unfair and unreasonable and deprives the applicant (IPA) of equality before the law or equal protection and benefit of the law and of the full and equal enjoyments of all rights and freedoms in contravention of Article 149 (D) of the Constitution as null, void and of no legal effect.” Singh wants the court to declare that the decision by the NPTAB, that the IPA did not satisfy the requirements, is unreasonable, unconstitutional, unlawful, null, void and of no legal effect. According to the court documents filed by IPA, the company is looking to have the court declare that the revised criteria set out by the Ministry, violate the constitution and as such has no legal effect. He is also seeking a conservatory order suspending or staying the decision by the NPTAB, that the New GPC is the only prequalified supplier to Government over the next three years.

Dr. Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop Singh further alleges that the renewed criteria by the Ministry came only after it would have extended public invitations for persons to apply to be prequalified. Under the contentious revised criteria, bidders had to demonstrate a gross annual turnover of US$5M and net assets of US$2.5M. Another criterion was that maximum score was to be awarded to applicants who would have paid $50M in Corporate taxes, annually. Additionally, the company that had 50 or more employees, and warehousing capacity of 30,000 square feet in the city, will also gain an edge.

Sewa International health services score a great success “Sewa”, when translated from Sanskrit to English, means “service” and this is exactly what the doctors and specialists from Sewa International provided to members of the Guyanese public from September 17 to September 20. The group of 15 volunteers provided free health clinics to communities in Essequibo, Berbice and the West Coast Demerara. The organisation, in collaboration with Sewa Guyana, the Saraswati Niketan of Guyana and the Association of Indian Physicians managed to reach over 1000 Guyanese in the course of their four day mission. The delegates involved in the organisation’s Medical Outreach programme, who hail from Cleveland, Ohio, include: Kokli Patatel, Saroj Mahalaha, Lall Arora, Gita Gidwani, Jaya Shah, Nilam Babishi, Bhubendra Babishi, Varsha Mehta, Preety Sengupta, Dr. Cherukuri, Dr.

Dinesh Shah, Arvind Shah, Smita Shah, Swati Shah and Ramesh Shah. This is not the first time that Sewa International has conducted such public services. Since the organizations creation, in 1989, the group has made regular journeys to India with the same mission. This is, however, the group’s first trip to Guyana. They were invited to the country by Swami Aksharananda who arranged the accommodations and the setting up of worksites for the group. While staying at Signature Inn on Laluni Street the group commended the hospitality and ease witht which they were able to carry out their services. As the group noted, “It was easy to communicate with patients, and connect with them on a personal level, which meant that they understood their treatment recommendations and took them very seriously”.

The group was asked by the Minister of Health, Bheri Ramsaran, to also look into specific areas of concern that included diabetes, hypertension, alcoholism and depression – ailments that are common in Guyana. As the latter two are sociopsychological ailments, the group was lucky to have psychiatrist Dr. Mehta on board as she provided a verifiably clinical way to diagnose patients. When asked about the treatment methods for ailments like alcoholism and depression, which sometimes go hand in hand, the doctors

said that simple communication is vital. The doctors noted that depression was most common among teenage patients, and that the reason for this issue is because they feel that they cannot talk to any adult peers about their problems. It was noted that, “patients were eager to voice personal problems!” which the doctors highlighted was a positive sign for treatment in patients suffering from depression in Guyana. The team also focused on educating the public on personal healthcare. Simple things like regular doctor

checkups and following the instructions for medication were highlighted as being steps through which patients can take in securing their well being. Also part of educating patients, more specifically female patients, was the teaching of self exams for breast cancer. Patatel who was in charge of this service, along with assistance from Dr. Mahalaha, regarded that “the best gift that patients can give us, is to teach it (breast cancer self exams) to their sisters, mothers, grand-mothers, friends and fellow women”.

These lessons were done with the hope that the sooner women in Guyana are able to detect possible masses, the sooner they can seek medical treatment and reduce the rate of death from breast cancer. Lessons in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) were also provided to the public, which had a turnout of about 60 persons. Bhubendra, who specialises in Public Health, observed that “pesticides pose a major problem to farmers. It has the side-effect of causing numbness to various parts of the body”. He continued to elaborate that he will be incorporating his observations with the intention of improving education in healthcare and the environment. He also commented that “medication is good but ultimately, practical and educational methods can go a father way in healing patients.” Some members of Sewa International Medical Outreach Mission were Guyanese volunteers, among them medical students. The team acknowledged that without their help a lot of their clinics could not have been as effective as they ultimately ended up being. The Sewa International team said that its mission was a great success and it plans to return to Guyana to carry out more free clinics in the future.

Lampard scores twice in City... Wuhan Open: Maria Sharapova From page 26 Liverpool on 25 August. Toure captained a side packed with internationals, including the likes of Lampard, Dzeko, Navas and Milner, who impressed again with his energy and quality in the final third. The Owls are sixth in the Championship after losing only one of their opening 10 matches in all competitions and played with an air of confidence in the first half. They were not afraid to commit players forward when they sensed the opportunity but were unable to seriously test home keeper Willy Caballero. And that proved costly as City scored three goals in seven minutes after the restart to put the game beyond them. Lampard opened the scoring with a timely

arrival at the near post, then Dzeko lost his marker to collect Navas’s cross and drill into the far corner. That was quickly followed by Navas’s thumping finish from inside the Owls area, before Zayatte was dismissed after he clumsily felled Lampard in the penalty area, with Toure finding the bottom corner with the spot-kick. With the game won, Pellegrini introduced 18-year-old Spanish striker Pozo, who arrived from Real Madrid’s academy two years ago. But City refused to take any mercy on Wednesday’s depleted side. Dzeko netted his second with a towering header from left-back Aleksandar Kolarov’s perfect cross, before Pozo slotted in another Navas pass. And Lampard netted his third goal in four days, after equalising against former club Chelsea on Sunday, to send City into the last 16.

LOSES TO TIMEA BACSINSZKY BBC Sport - Fourth seed Maria Sharapova suffered a third-round loss to Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky in the Wuhan Open in China. Bacsinszky, 25, won 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to earn the biggest victory of her career - her other two previous wins against top-10 players were both by retirement. Russia’s Sharapova, 27, double-faulted six times in the first set. She was also twice a break up in the second set before world number 61 Bacsinszky prevailed. World number 61 Bacsinszky knocked out US Open semi-finalist and 13th seed Ekaterina Makarova in the second round. She will now face eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki - who swept aside Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-0 6-3 - in the quarter-finals. Sharapova’s early exit followed the withdrawal of world number one Serena Williams from the inaugural £1.5m hard-court event on Tuesday because of a viral illness and second seed Simona Halep’s surprise defeat. France’s Alize Cornet, who benefitted from Williams’

Timea Bacsinszky (AFP) withdrawal in her last match, beat Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 6-3, while Germany’s Angelique Kerber earned a straight-sets victory over Czech Republic’s Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada eased

past American Alison Riske 62 6-3 and will play Cornet in the next round. Caroline Garcia of France, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic and the Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina are also through to the quarterfinals.

Eight teams battle in the Banks Malta SURYAKUMAR CAMEO Supreme Under-13 cricket competition pushes KKR to semi-finals Eight teams will vie for top honours in the Banks Malta Supreme Under-13 cricket tournament organized by the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA). The tournament is sponsored by Banks DIH Limited under the Malta Supreme Brand. Competitions Chairman of the GCA, Shaun Massiah said there has been an increase in the number of teams competing in the event this year. He disclosed that several venues including YMCA and MYO grounds will be utilized with the final earmarked for Thirst Park. Roger Harper, President of the GCA expressed gratitude to Banks DIH Limited for sponsoring the tournament at the official launch at Banks Sports Club at Thirst Park yesterday. The former Guyana and West Indies captain said the local beverage company has

supported the tournament for the past four years which provides young players with the opportunity to develop their cricketing skills. Clayton McKenzie, Malta Supreme Brand Manager said his Company was excited to be partnering with the GCA in this tournament. “Cricket is a very important sport in Guyana, cricket stars emerged over the years. Lampard scores twice in City rout

Edin Dzeko’s brace means the Bosnian has scored 10 goals in 11 League Cup games for City. (EMPICS) BBC Sport - Holders Manchester City produced a ruthless second-half display to start their Capital One Cup defence with a thumping win over Sheffield Wednesday. Frank Lampard tucked in James Milner’s cross soon after the restart before Edin Dzeko swept in a pass from Jesus Navas, who added a ferocious drive. Yaya Toure converted a penalty after Lampard was tripped by Kamil Zayatte. He was sent off as Dzeko’s header, Jose Angel Pozo’s debut goal and another Lampard strike sank the Owls’ 10 men. Few would have predicted a seven-goal scoreline at the break after Championship side Wednesday held their own in a tight first half. Premier League champions City put on a sluggish first-half display, but were a

completely different proposition after the break as they swept aside the unfortunate visitors. Once ex-England midfielder Lampard converted at the near post, City’s hopes of a morale-boosting win never looked in doubt. Draws against Arsenal and Chelsea, punctured by defeats against Stoke and Bayern Munich, have seen Manuel Pellegrini’s side stutter in recent weeks. So the home tie against the Yorkshire side presented the opportunity to restore some belief - which they duly achieved. Many top-flight sides field weakened teams in the early rounds of the League Cup, but Pellegrini named a strong starting XI as City searched for their first win since beating (Continued on page 25)

ESPNcricinfo - Kolkata Knight Riders have developed a knack of pulling off the clinical and the haphazard on the same night. Led by Sunil Narine, their spinners were un-hittable. Perth Scorchers realised that after much huffing and puffing that amounted to only 151 for 7. The Knight Riders batsmen though were lackadaisical and Scorchers’ seamers rode on that, until they were met Suryakumar Yadav. His twin sixes in the 19th over killed the contest and sealed Knight Riders’ progress into the Champions League T20 semi-finals. Kuldeep Yadav, the 19-

year old left-arm chinaman, and Narine would have been in the dugout wondering if the clincher would be their batting and not them snaring all seven of the opposition’s wickets to fall, at 6.8 to the over. Scorchers’ captain Adam Voges had highlighted the need to collect singles against mystery bowlers, but only he managed to stick to the plan. While the rest of the line-up swished and swashed across the line, he accumulated an unbeaten 71 off 52 balls that looked surprisingly close to matchwinning until the final few minutes of the game. Two sixes in the 15th over

sparked Suryakumar’s innings off and two similar blows aided Knight Riders crowned a 19-ball 43. So Knight Riders push their winning streak to 12 matches, despite regular wickets and despite their second-best score being 24. Gautam Gambhir, their captain, too found an explanation hard to come by, “I don’t know, the only think I can think of was the hunger in the dressing room.” Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 153 for 7 (Suryakumar 43*, Arafat 3-39) beat Perth Scorchers 151 for 7 (Voges 71*, Narine 4-31, Kuldeep 324) by three wickets.

Madrid, Spain – Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas made his La Liga debut for European champion Real Madrid in a 5-1 win over visiting Elche on Tuesday. The 2014 FIFA World Cup standout played the entire game, allowing only a 15th minute penalty kick to Edu Albacar. In the victory, Ronaldo netted four goals and Gareth

Bale added the other. Three days earlier, another CONCACAF superstar – Mexico’s Javier Hernandez – scored his first two goals for the Spanish giant in an 8-2 win at Deportivo La Coruña. Head Coach Carlo Ancelotti inserted Navas into the starting line-up as a replacement for Spanish World Cup champion Iker Casillas, who had conceded

eight goals in four league games. Navas helped Costa Rica to its first-ever World Cup quarterfinal berth at Brazil 2014, where it fell to the Netherlands 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw. He also posted shutouts against Italy and England in Group D play. The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid in August after more than two years with Levante. (CONCACAF.com)

Exciting play expected at Trophy Stall DRAVID - Shiv was golf tournament at Lusignan Saturday different in his style Mr Ramesh Sunich (right) handing over trophies to the Golf Club PRO Mr Guy Griffith.

M

a n a g i n g Director and proprietor of Trophy Stall Mr. Ramesh Sunich is pleased to continue sponsorship of a golf tournament at Lusignan Saturday. Mr Sunich, who is currently the Vice President of the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA), and who has been involved in sponsorship of sports in all the disciplines in Guyana, commented on his involvement with sponsorship of golf. “I have never played golf, but I intend to be a member of the golf club and play the game. About 15 years now I have been in association with the Lusignan Golf Club, providing trophies for many tournaments, and in fact I

have been sponsoring competitions for some five years or so. I intend to be part of that game. “Incidentally, even though the GFCSA Cup four involving many local teams and eight teams from the USA and Canada is billed for November 2nd, same day as the LGC Guyana Open tournament, also involving players from the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, South America and Europe. I will find the time to come over to the golf course and observe part of the game. I am pleased to continue sponsorship of this great game in Guyana.” Saturday’s game is expected to attract a large number of players. Up for grabs are trophies for 1st to 3rd position in the threemale Flights, 1st and 2nd in the Female Flight, Overall

Best Net golfer and likely Nearest to The Pin. Tee-off set for 12:00 noon. For those learning the game, here is a quick brief on Handicaps and Flights: A handicap is the number of points the player gets as an advantage, and is subtracted from the players gross or total to determine his or her net score, which is the value used to evaluate how winners are placed. For example, consider two players of handicap 10 and 20. If they both score a gross of 80 strokes, then the 10 handicap player is given a net of 70 strokes, while the 20 handicap player is given a net of 60 strokes. Consider two players one of handicap five and the other of handicap 25. If they both score a gross of 90, then the five handicappers give a net

of 85, while the 25 handicapper given a net of 65! But generally, the lower the player’s handicap the more skilful the player is, so that the straight handicap play is considered a disadvantage to better players. It is for this reason that the players are grouped in Flights. By Flight play, male golfers are grouped in three categories by their handicaps. Handicaps one to nine are in one Flight, handicaps 10 to 18 another Flight, and handicaps 19 to 28 the third Flight. Playing by Flights increases the competitiveness of the game and demands on the players to perform at a higher standard. Grouping handicaps in similar categories allows for a more reasonable competition among golfers of differing abilities and places more work on the golfers to excel in their categories. National open competitions in the Caribbean and South America are played by Flights. Depending on the number of ladies in the game the female Flights are arranged slightly differently. At the LGC at the moment, only about six females practice the game, and only four compete regularly. So the ladies have a special group.

ee News - New Delhi: Former India captain Rahul Dravid paid rich tributes to West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul stating that the “sheer weight of runs and duration of international

career” makes left-hander an exceptional batsman. The Guyanese batsman has so far played 158 Test matches having scored 11 , 6 8 4 r u n s w i t h 3 0 centuries. He played 268 ODIs till 2011 scoring 8778 runs with 11 hundreds. “You only have to look at his numbers? the sheer weight of them over the length of his career - which is not a short one. He’s been consistent, exceptional in all conditions,” Dravid was quoted as saying in ‘Modern Masters’, a video series by ESPN Cricinfo. Dravid termed Chanderpaul’s style of batting as a distinctly different from his peers. “One of the things you probably forget about him is the sense of the style and the way he plays. He’s not really played in a strong team. He’s played in an era when West Indian cricket hasn’t been at its best so they haven’t had a lot of success as a team. A lot of his runs has been scored when West Indies have lost.” Dravid said that Chanderpaul was a class act while handling India’s famed spin twins Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble at their best. “The way he’s able to manoeuvre balls of spinners into gaps was something that stood out. Standing in slips, you’ll be able to see that Chanderpaul is able to turn his wrists at the last minute to people like Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble and just find the gap when he needed to,” said Dravid.

In reply to Essequibo’s first innings total of 173, Berbice closed the first day on 130-3 after facing 40 overs at the Demerara Cricket Club yesterday. Skipper Narsingh Deonarine is unbeaten on 43 and with him is Jonathan Foo on 13. Left arm spinner Ve e r a s a m m y P e r m a u l grabbed 5-54 as Essequibo were bowled out in 48 overs after lunch. Berbice won the toss and asked Essequibo to bat on a track which offered much assistance to the bowlers early on. Kevon Boodie and Royan Fredericks added 20 for the opening stand before Boodie, who drove Keon Joseph to the cover boundary, was bowled by a beauty from Raun Johnson a delivery which hit the top of the off stump after pitching on middle. The left handed former Guyana U-19 player took boundaries off Deonarine, but was caught by wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble off Permaul for 30 off 73 balls with six fours. Ricardo Peters retired hurt on eight after he was hit on the arm by Permaul who removed Mark Gonsalves (00) to leave Essequibo at

107-3. Ricardo Adams played his shots after he got settled; he drove Deonarine for fours and hit Romario Shepherd DeJonge for another. The left hander from the Essequibo river island of Wakenaam then smashed Permaul for sixes over longon before driving Devon Clements down the ground for fours. After reaching his fifty, Adams continued to bat positively and drove Clements for another boundary, but Clements,

He encouraged the cricketer to take the game seriously and wished him well. Paul thanked the Board for the support. who extracted considerable turn, had Adams stumped as the batsman chipped down the wicket. He top scored with 62 off 60 balls with nine fours and two sixes. After his demise, Essequibo lost Anthony Adams (01) and Keano Harry (01) to slither to 1446. Peters resumed his innings and showed promise, adding 27 for the seventh wicket with Brian Hubert. The stand was beginning to look ominous and Deonarine changed his bowlers around in an effort to break their partnership and Clements provided it when he trapped Hubert lbw for 10. Peters rotated the strike well and picked up three fours before he tried to cut a ball too close to him and was caught behind for 38. Johnson removed Mark Ty r e l l ( 0 0 ) b e f o r e Hemchand Persaud (00) was run out, bringing an end to the innings. Clements snared

2-25, Gudakesh Motie Kanhai 1-5 and Johnson 114. Pacer Mark Tyrell had Kandasammy Surujnarine (05) well caught by Gonsalves at gully as Berbice lost their first wicket at 14. Seon Hetmyer and Clements steadied the innings somewhat as they took the score 63. Hetmyer pulled pacer Keyon Davis through mid-wicket for fours and hit Hubert for boundaries while Clements cut Hubert to the point boundary and smashed Tyrell through covers and long-off. The pair continued to accumulate their runs on both sides of the pitch before Hetmyer was caught by

wicketkeeper Boodie for 37 with four fours. Clements added a further 20 with Deonarine, but was soon trapped lbw to left arm spinner Anthony Adams for 21 (3x4). Deonarine mixed aggression with defence and has so far featured in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 44 with Foo. Deonarine punched Adams through covers for boundaries and deposited him over mid wicket four a maximum. Essequibo could have had him back in the pavilion, but Hubert failed to catch the ball cleanly running in from deep midwicket after the batsman lofted Fredericks. Adam, Tyrell and Fredericks have so far taken one wicket each.

COURTS FOURTH 10KM ROAD RACE

GCB FOUR-DAY INTER-COUNTY CRICKET...

Demerara in ascendancy on opening day By Sean Devers The Sun was out in all of its glory at the Everest ground yesterday, but 50 minutes of play was lost due to the late arrival of lunch and late arrival of the match balls in the second round Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) four-day cricket encounter between defending champions Demerara the GCB Development X1. When bad light stopped play at 17:28hrs with two overs remaining in the day’s play the hosts were 134-3 in reply to the GCB side’s 154 all out, still 20 runs in arrears. Shemron Hetymer was the only batsman to reach 35 for the GCB team after making 41 from 31 minutes and 27 balls with eight fours as Chris Barnwell finished with 4-48 and got support from leg-spinner Amir Khan (2-46) and left-arm spinner Raj Nanan (2-3). Twenty-three year-old Trevon Griffith followed up his first round century with an accomplished 53 from 107 minutes and 92 balls with five fours and shared in a 65-run second partnership with Rajendra Chandrika, who made 26 from 59 balls and 76 minutes with three fours. Skipper Steven Jacobs, who had a six-wicket haul in the first match, has so far picked up 2-33 with his off-spin. The GCB Development X1 won the toss and opted to bat on an easy paced pitch after a 10-minute late start and they were given a firm foundation by West Indies under-19 openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Hetymer, who dominated the partnership on a fast outfield. While Chanderpaul struggled to score, Hetymer was his usual aggressive self and went after the bowling, being especially severe on debutant left-arm medium pacer Gavin Moriah, who replaced opening batman Shemron Barrington in the side and looked way below this level. Berbician Hetymer, the younger brother of Berbice player Shemroy Hetymer, played an array of attractive shots and seemed well set for a half century when he was trapped LBW to seamer Paul Wintz for 41 at 47-1. The 17year-old Hetymer, who has played a single First-Class match, departed just when he was beginning to look threatening.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul is trapped LBW to Chris Barnwell (far right) at Everest yesterday Medium pacer Barnwell struck twice in two balls with the score on 60 when he had Chanderpaul Hemraj (10) well taken at cover by Moriah and Jacobs, also taken by Moriah, low down at mid-on, for a duck to leave Barnwell on a hat-trick. David Latchaya averted the hat-trick before Barnwell had Chanderpaul LBW for a painstaking eight from 80 minutes and 40 balls to leave the GCB unit on 73-4. By Lunch Latchaya and Kemo Paul had taken the score to 89-4. After a delay on 40 minutes due to the late arrival of the food for the players and officials, play finally resumed and Paul (7) was bowled by Barnwell at 90-5, while five runs later Kemol Savory was run out for a duck. With the mighty Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop and a cooling breeze blowing across the ground Latchya was joined by Yatesh Dhanpaul and together they took the score to 116 before Dhanpaul (11) hoisted Khan to long-off. Left-arm spinner Raj Nanan then got rid of Latchya, LBW for well compiled 34 from 144

minutes and 66 balls with five fours to leave the score on 120-8. Kellon Carmichael (4) was removed by Khan at 127-9 before Steven Sankar, who played some elegant shots in his undefeated 24 which was decorated with three fours and a six, added 27 for the last wicket with Nial Smith who was eventually LBW to Nanan on the stroke of Tea. Demerara began their reply in the last session and Griffith and Robin Bacchus played in positive fashion with Griffith caressing Carmichael majestically to the cover boundary, while Bacchus rocked back and pulled Paul through wide mid-on for a boundary before leaning forward and stroking him with immaculate precision into the gap between mid-off and cover for another four in the over. But Jacobs introduced himself into the attack and Bacchus (20) tried to take him on but only succeeded in finding Carmichael on the long-off boundary at 45-1 to bring Chandrika, with a double century to his name in the first, to join Griffith.

Jacobs could have had two wickets in two balls had Savory not miss stumped Chandrika, first ball. Chandrika flicked Carmichael off his legs and whipped him for fours in successive overs after Griffith had square driven Jacobs for four as the partnership flourished. Griffith smashed Dhanpaul through the covers for four to move to 49 and flicked the off-spinner for a single to bring up his 50, while Chandrika viciously pulled Dhanpaul for four. Jacobs then had Griffith LBW at 110-2 to break the 65-run stand and Sankar then removed Chandrika for 26 with three fours from 76 minutes and 59 balls before Skipper Vishaul Singh (6*) and night Watchman Khan, who played in a batsmanlike manner, to end on 14 not out, saw Demerara safely to the close. The GCB Development team members wore black ribbons on their shirts as a mark of respect to Essequibo opener Kevin Boodie who lost two family members during the last week. Play is scheduled to start at 09:22 hrs today.

The Ford Focus is almost an automatic automobile choice for race car drivers in the Caribbean. Its ability to transition speeds and sustain pace makes it a top-ranked vehicle on racing circuits in the region. Cleveland Forde is like the Ford Focus, name and nature. It becomes very repetitive that every time road race season comes around, Forde can be imagined shifting his gears in the latter half of the race, leaving any hint of a challenge in his shadows, and eventually cruising to what becomes comfortable and customary victories. Forde’s Focus on Sunday at Courts fourth 10km Road Race will be mundane; it will be another addition of one of road racing most coveted titles to his cabinet, again! Forde is the four-time defending champ, and he has shown no inclination of slowing down anytime soon. His distance-running foes will be offered a new opportunity to dethrone the local king of the road on Sunday. It’s a clichéd statement; they have been offered such opportunities in the past, but it’s no secret what became of those ambitions. Here is a frightening, but yet impressive statistic: in the last decade, no local athlete has beaten Forde in a road race. Undoubtedly Guyana and the Caribbean’s number one distance runner, Forde usually presses his accelerator around the 8km mark after tactically feeling out his rivals. His race acumen is almost perfect and his judgement is so clinical

that he burns less fuel. Forde relies on his tried and tested strategy that is to use the pacemakers to his advantage early in road races, and keep enough gas in his tank to up the ante in the latter half, which often leaves an incredible space between him and his opposition. Those likely to test the focus of Forde Sunday include Cleveland Thomas, Nathaniel Giddings, Winston Missenger and a host of other athletes. But without a clear strategy against Forde, who has routinely used these races as warm-up for the much more challenging IAAF South American 10k, the result will be anyone’s guest. The prizes for the male and female senior category include $100,000 for the winner; $75,000 for second place; $50,000 for third; $30,000 for fourth and $20,000 for fifth place. The prizes in the Masters category (Women 35 years and over and Men 40-54) are $60,000, $40,000 and $25,000 respectively. The race will start in front of Courts’ Main Street Office, proceed north to the Seawall Road, east along the Seawall Road and continue east along Rupert Craig H i g h w a y ’s n o r t h e r n carriageway to turn at Church Road on the Rupert Craig Highway. It will then proceed on the Rupert Craig Highway’s southern carriageway into Kitty Public Road; south on Vlissingen Road; west on Lamaha Street, south on the eastern carriageway into Main Street, before turning around at the Cenotaph to finish on the western carriageway of Main Street in front of Courts.

R

amesh Thakur recorded his second century in the West Demerara Cricket Association 40-Over Competition as Wales CDC destroyed Zeelugt by 102 runs in their match up at the Zeelugt Community Centre ground. The previous weekend, Thakur also registered a century (114) when his team defeated New Windsor by 272 runs. Batting first in a match that was reduced to 28 overs per side due to a wet outfield from overnight

showers, Wales CDC posted 233/9 in their allotted overs. Thakur led the way with a blistering 110 and got support from Mahesh Persaud, who made 46. Persaud was also a centurion (100) in Wales CDC previous match. Bowling for Zeelugt, Omar Shakoor was the pick of the bowlers with 5/0/31/3, while David Doodnauth chipped in with 6/0/33/2. Chasing 234 for victory, Zeelugt only managed 131 before being bowled out in 25 overs. Terry Dass

....Thakur records second century in competition (27) and Dennis Maniram (22) were the notable scorers. ESPNcricinfo - West Indies have recalled a trio of experienced players batsmen Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Smith, and fast bowler Jerome Taylor - for the one-dayers in India next

month. Guyana batsman Leon Johnson, who made his Test debut earlier this month against Bangladesh, has also been called up. Chris Gayle will miss the series as he is still

rehabilitating from injury. Others missing out are batsman Kirk Edwards and left-arm spinner Nikita Miller. Samuels and Smith return after having missed

out on the limited-overs legs of the home series against New Zealand and Bangladesh this year. Taylor is back after a more lengthy absence, having last played an ODI in 2010. Johnson has been out of the one-day squad even longer - having briefly made an appearance on the international circuit back in 2008 for a one-day tournament also featuring hosts Canada and Bermuda. He arrives as a reinforcement for the top order after Edwards failed in the Bangladesh ODIs, scoring 10 in two innings. Miller didn’t get a game during the Bangladesh ODIs but has been left out for India, leaving Sunil Narine as the only specialist spinner

in the squad. The first of five ODIs against India is on October 8 in Kochi. Squad Dwayne Bravo (Captain), Darren Bravo, Jason Holder, Leon Johnson, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith and Jerome Taylor. Portland top Alpha United, stay perfect in CCL P

ortland, Oregon The Portland Timbers scored at least four goals for the third consecutive time, posting a 6-0 victory over Alpha United in the CONCACAF Champions League at rainy Providence Park on Tuesday night. The Timbers (3-0-0, 9 points) took sole possession of first place in Group 5. They travel to Honduras for an October 21 meeting with second-place Olimpia (2-01, 6 points) with a place in the quarterfinals at stake. A tie, a win or even a onegoal defeat would give Portland the group title. Alpha United (0-0-4, 0 points) had previously been eliminated from contention. Jack Jewsbury (11’), Gaston Fernandez (36’), Michael Nanchoff (49’) and Norberto Paparatto (61’, 88’) recorded their first CCL

goals for the Timbers, who also had another from second-half substitute Fanendo Adi (75th minute). Portland’s Jake Gleeson, who made his first appearance in goal since April 2011, preserved the shutout, coming off his line to stop a brilliant individual effort by Aldair Paredes in the 58th minute. Jewsbury started the onslaught in the 11th minute. Michael Harrington sent Jewsbury a feed from the left flank and the midfielder ran through three defenders, before slipping the ball into the lower right corner past goalkeeper Ronson Williams for a 1-0 lead. It was Jewsbury’s first goal since tallying against the Vancouver Whitecaps in an MLS match in October 2012. The hosts doubled their lead in the 36th minute as Fernandez worked his way

off a bouncing right-wing pass from Maximiliano

Urruti. Nanchoff increased the lead to 3-0 three minutes after the break off a short corner kick that he originated. Following a give-and-go with Ben Zemanski, Nanchoff unleashed a 19-yard shot from the right side that found its way through traffic. Paparatto struck for his first in the 61st minute, heading home a Nanchoff corner kick for his first goal since April 2009. Adi increased the margin to 5-0 in the 75th minute with his second career CCL goal and Paparatto headed in another Nanchoff corner to close out the scoring with two minutes left in normal time. The Timbers established a new mark for the most goals scored by a single team in its first three CCL outings with 14, breaking the record Cruz Azul set with 12 in

2008. The MoneyGram Player of the Match was Portland Timbers Michael Nanchoff. Sporting Kansas City 3 Real Esteli 0 Claudio Bieler scored two goals and Sporting Kansas City earned a 3-0 win over visiting Real Esteli in the CONCACAF Champions League at Sporting Park on Tuesday. The victory lifted Sporting (2-1-0, 7 points) into sole possession first place in Group 2, three points ahead of idle Saprissa (1-1-1, 4 points). Real Esteli (0-2-2, 2 points) was eliminated from the competition, marking the fifth time it has failed to reach the quarterfinals in as many attempts. Kansas City will visit Saprissa on October 23 in the final and decisive group game. (CONCACAF.com)

PPP recommends a National Award for Shiv Chanderpaul

T

he People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has lauded the batting performance of Shivnarine Chanderpaul. In a statement, the party highlighted the recent showing by the West Indies batsman and called for him to be conferred with a national award. Here is the full text of the message: “The People’s Progressive Party takes this opportunity to extend congratulations to a son of this soil, national hero and a true Ambassador of Guyana, batting legend

Shivnarine “Tiger” Chanderpaul for achieving yet another feat in world cricket, surpassing Sir Donald Bradman’s 29th test centuries. “Tiger” as he is well-known around the world as, during the final test against Bangladesh at St Lucia last week carved out a patient 101 not out to surpass Sir Donald’s record. During the same series, Chanderpaul became only the second batsman to remain undefeated throughout a Test series with three of more innings and scored 200-plus

runs. Jacques Kallis was the first to do so, against Zimbabwe in 2001. Additionally, we wish to congratulate “Tiger” on returning to the number three position in the ICC Reliance Mobile World Test Batting Rankings and remain confident he will continue to climb his way back to the top of the rankings, having held the number one test batsman position on several occasions in the past. The PPP takes this opportunity to urge the West Indies Cricket Board and its Selection

Panel to ensure that the Guyanese batting machine is selected for the upcoming tours of India and South Africa, since he required a mere 228 runs to surpass Brian Lara’s record of 11912, the most runs by any West Indian batsman. It is important to note that Shiv currently is the 6th overall leading runs scorer in test cricket with 11684 from 156 tests. Records are nothing new to Chanderpaul as he also hold the record of the most not outs (Continued on page 29)
