f Guyana intends to get its fair share of oil from the Stabroek Block, then it has to invest in the latest technology that would record accurate measurements of the quantity being extracted and exported

by ExxonMobil and its partners. This is according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In its most recent advice to the APNU+AFC Government, the financial institution underscored the importance of Guyana having all the necessary measures in place to monitor every drop of oil. The IMF said that if Guyana makes use of the latest technology, accurate meter reading of the oil can be conveyed to the Guyana Revenue Authority's customs department,

therefore eliminating the need for a permanent or regular presence of customs officers during the oil lifting operations.

While the use of the latest technology will bring immense benefits, the IMF stressed that GRA's Customs Department should not relinquish its right to make visits to the Liza Destiny , Guyana's first Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

In fact, the international agency said that Customs officers should visit the FPSO from time to time to ensure that agreed procedures are being adhered to by ExxonMobil as well as to assert Guyana's sovereignty over FPSO operations.

The IMF reminded that the FPSO is a significant component of the Liza Phase One development which

involves four undersea drill centers with 17 production wells. It has a production capacity up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day and an overall storage volume of 1.6 million barrels.

Kaieteur News understands that the FPSO will be connected to the wells via separate production (oil, gas, and produced water), gas injection, and water injection flowlines and risers, and associated subsea equipment.

The Project will also involve shorebase facilities and marine/aviation services to support development drilling, FPSO and subsea equipment installation, production operations, and u l t i m a t e l y decommissioning.

Woman chopped to death by propellers, 2 missing in E'bo River accident

A

woman is dead and two persons remain missing up to late last night in the Essequibo River after a horrific two-boat collision.

Five persons with injuries were said to have survived.

While details were sketchy with a search on for survivors last night, Kaieteur News was able to ascertain that a passenger vessel left Parika, East Bank Essequibo after 5pm.

On board were eight persons.

It was unclear whether the final destination was Buck Hall, an area located upriver on the left bank of the river.

However, one survivor who was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, West Coast Demerara, said it was supposed to stop there.

According to reports, around 5:45pm, a large white boat heading north smacked into the passenger vessel.

The other boat rode over the passenger boat. The propellers reportedly chopped a female passenger badly. A number of other passengers were also badly injured.

According to one passenger, two persons were thrown into the Essequibo River.

Those two remained missing.

Survivors were taken to both the Cottage and the West Demerara Regional Hospitals.

The dead woman's name was given as Sherry. She is said to be 54 years old.

Kaieteur News was told that the boat that crashed into the passenger vessel was the one that turned around and rescued the survivors.

hree former presidents of the P e o p l e ' s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) have refused to attend a Chinese ceremony where President David Granger has been invited as the Chief Guest.

Yesterday, the former Presidents Samuel Hinds, Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar, issued a statement addressed to the Ambassador

of the People's Republic of China, Cui Jianchun and his wife, Mrs. Liang Huili, telling the officials that they will not be attending. “ We , t h r e e f o r m e r Presidents of Guyana, Mr. Samuel A. A. Hinds, Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo and Mr. Donald Ramotar hereby express our deep regrets that in the current circumstances in Guyana, where the constitution has been breached

and the Coalition Government has lost all legitimacy, we could not attend your Ceremony of Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China where Mr. David Granger, is the Chief Guest representing Guyana, as he is doing so as a usurper,� the statement said.

The event was held last evening at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre.

and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) says it will utilize proven and industry accepted standards and has incorporated many embedded controls into the overall Project design to minimize environmental and socioeconomic impacts. The initial production is expected to begin by mid 2020, with operations continuing for at least 20 years. The Project is expected to employ up to 600 persons during well drilling, approximately 600 persons at the peak of the installation stage, and up to about 140 persons during production operations.

Furthermore, the planned activities of the Liza Phase One Project are predicted to have minor impacts on physical resources (i.e., air quality, marine sediments, and water quality), no impacts on coastal biological resources, minor impacts on marine biological resources, and largely positive impacts on socioeconomics.

This news agency understands that these predictions are based on the fact that the bulk of the

project activity will occur approximately 190 km (~120 miles) offshore, and the project will capture and reinject produced natural gas, which is not used as fuel on the FPSO, back into the Liza reservoir; treat required wastewater streams prior to discharge to the sea; have a very small physical footprint (e.g., infrastructure construction disturbs only about 0.3 km2 of benthic habitat); and use Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) during selected activities to minimize the potential impacts to marine mammals due to auditory injury and ships strikes.

As it relates to unplanned events, EEPGL's Environmental Impact Assessment notes that a large oil spill is unlikely to occur because of the extensive preventative measures employed by EEPGL. Nevertheless, the document notes that an oil spill is considered possible, and EEPGL has conducted oil spill modeling to evaluate the range of likely spill trajectories and rates of travel.

It was noted that the location of the project 190 km (~120 mi) offshore, prevailing northwest currents, the light nature of the Liza field crude oil, and the region's warm waters would all help minimize the severity of a spill. Accounting for these factors, the modeling indicates only a five to 10 percent probability of any oil reaching the Guyana coast, without taking into consideration the effectiveness of any oil spill response, and in the unlikely event that a spill were even to occur.

A l t h o u g h t h e probability of an oil spill reaching the Guyana coast is very small, the EIA notes that a spill at a Liza well would likely impact marine resources found near the well, such as sea turtles and certain marine mammals that may transit or inhabit the area impacted by a spill. Air quality, water quality, seabirds, and marine fish could also be impacted, although likely to a lesser extent because the duration of acute impacts would not be long and the impacts are reversible.

What manner of people are we?

There are ongoing sounds of political promises to rescind the 2 a.m. curfew. This paper has difficulty believing that anyone, any aspirant, any group, could be so irresponsible to Guyanese citizens - so contemptuous of so many Guyanese neighbourhoods, and so utterly casual about the vulgarities that once prevailed and the associated lawlessness that flows from such declines.

It is at times like these that there must be great gladness in the hearts of the many Guyanese who hurried out of here (and completely distanced themselves) from the conflicts and sicknesses that hang heavily over this society. So, too, must be the thinking of the few remaining for possessing the good sense to disengage from things political.

All Guyanese should be familiar with the piercing volumes that once battered ear, civility, and sanity during the pre-2 a.m. curfew era. There was the uninhibited bacchanalia that brought out the worst impulses, and the most riotous aspects of our reckless natures. Every day was carnival and Mardi Gras and one greatest show in the world after another, all rolled into one. Examples were set from many levels of the loud karaoke excesses, the public urinating and public vomiting in disgusting exhibitions of a dissipated lifestyle. Many of such participants have gained a notorious reputation. There was neither interest nor discipline nor strength to be otherwise. No standards and values, too, to hold in check and contribute to bettering for many.

Because many more were heavily impacted, than those carousing and imbibing and spending the mainly dirty money that made all things possible in Guyana, including breaking the law, and then buying it. Those would be the many trapped hapless, living in the vicinity of the whisky stills, gin joints, rum shops, and dives of varying pedigrees. Taken together, places of low and fashionable repute. Fashionable for those who, most likely, cheat and beat their spouses. Fashionable for those who celebrate another rewarding day in the foreign currency laundromats that put on a good show (they believe) as to structures of capitalism, civil society, and charity.

There were the many in communities across the country who were affected, intimidated and scared, and suffered in resigned silence; the many who reported to the police and the press of the tortures inflicted and perpetuated through acute and dangerous noise nuisance levels; the many more, who endured nobody (not police, not politicians) doing anything. There were no seniors saying anything, other than drink up and be merry, for tomorrow may never come.

Those were the more visible tips of the iceberg. For invisible were the many police officers touched and tainted by easy liquid cash to hear nothing, but the cash ringing (rustling) on their persons. Nothing done; nothing doing.

By anybody. Students struggled; honest workers were forced to keep the clock company, and families and places of worship all paid a steep price. But nobody among the compromised policing crowd and the backward political class gave a damn.

There were the many cascading effects that were covered up, evaded, or ignored: drunk driving, hit-and-run fatalities, domestic abuse, GRA contamination (unlicensed liquor stamped) underage drinking, teenage prostitution (though never seen in that perverse light) and the host of tempting pickings for police people up and down the chain.

Yes, the people complained bitterly but they, too, are guilty of identifying with, pledging support, and then delivering it to those they embraced, but who abandoned them.

There are hundreds (maybe a thousand) issues of significance, if not more urgent priorities, and rolling back the 2 a.m. curfew is one of the paramount considerations put before the voting public. Surely, this society can’t be this crass, this classless?There is recognition for the constitutional right of boozers and inhalers and hustlers to the poisons of their choice, and around the clock, if it comes to that. But not when the cascading effects of all the ills identified earlier sabotage this society. There were those plagues and now there is talk today of removing the 2 a.m. curfew. Is this the highest wisdom we are capable of, the best we can offer?What calibre of thinkers live here? What kind of country is this? What manner of people are we?

Constitutionality must precede reform DEAR EDITOR, I feel compelled to offer my comments to a long but well-scribed statement emanating from A New and United Guyana (ANUG).

In this epistle, ANUG accurately chronicles the President’s, the Government’s and GECOM’s contumacious violations of the Constitution, their disrespect for the norms and practices of democracy, their abrogation of the rule of law, their contemptuous disregard for rulings from the Judiciary and, the President’s characterization as “hooliganism”, the citizenry’s exercise of their fundamental right and freedom to protest against these atrocities.

I am in complete agreement with this descriptive concatenation.

In introducing each of the occurrences in this chronology of authoritarianism, the

author asks, rhetorically, “what do you do?” In the end, the author offers his solution: “substantive changes to the Constitution.” With this contention, I differ sharply.

While I hold resolutely to the view that constitutional reform is always requisite to meet the dynamism and exigencies of an evolving society, it is not the panacea that so many in this country perceive it to be.

I am fortified in this view by the fact that the greatest and largest democracies in the world - India, the United States of America and Canada - have rarely altered their respective Constitutions since independence, though they would have been confronted with enormous governmental, democratic and constitutional challenges over the decades.

The United Kingdom presents us with nearly 2,000 years of democratic govern-

ment without a written Constitution!

A brief overview of the Commonwealth will confirm that Guyana’s Constitution has undergone more reforms than perhaps any other. And I daresay, stands out, comparatively, as one of the more democratic in its devolution of political power to non-Executive organs.

So my friends, the solution is not and cannot be, merely, constitutional reform.

What we are confronted with in Guyana is a colossal attack on constitutionalism, the rule of law and democratic ethos all rolled up in one.

Therefore, unless there is a preparedness to comply with the Constitution, to abide by the rules of democracy and to respect the rule of law, then whatever the provisions of the Constitution are, it will continue to be trampled upon by those who do not embrace

constitutionality.

The Caribbean Court of Justice’s recent exhortations in its consequential orders for the constitutional actors to discharge their duties with integrity falling on deaf ears, is but a stark reminder of this reality.

In the circumstances, there is sufficient empirical data to impel to the conclusion that constitutional reform will not engender constitutionality. Indeed, we run the risk of becoming a nation of serial constitutional reforms attracting an unending cycle of constitutional violations.

For the reasons adumbrated above, I demand unreserved and unqualified constitutional compliance, and perhaps then, we can resort to constitutional reform.

I see a 2020 election date as restoring most of the government’s earned regulation game time DEAR EDITOR, I count myself not exactly as Allan Fenty puts it in his letter in SN this Monday, as “among the mass of people who are in full congratulatory mode over PNC Leader David Granger’s guile of current success and triumph”.

More exactly, I count myself among those who believe that a 2020 election date has restored some natural fairness and legitimacy to our democracy.

For I do not see a 2020 election date as giving the coalition government extra time. Rather, I see it as restoring most of its earned regulation game time.

Fortunately, many today

have not forgotten what the 2015 election result meant at a personal and national level for our soul and spirit after 23 years of PPP excesses.

And though one may have been concerned over the avoidable missteps by the coalition government, nothing could justify what must be the most callous and selfish political act by an MP in the form of vote #33.

For many Guyanese, the use of the NCM guillotine did not fit the claimed government crimes. Moreover, they did not ignore the allegation of bribery and collusion surrounding vote #33.

That vote #33 was an act of treachery, that the govern-

ment exercised its rights to take legal action, that the courts interpreted the constitution the way they did, that GECOM did not buckle to the reckless demand for elections with all possible shortcuts and jeopardies, have all combined to make a 2020 election date acceptable to many.

If people are in a congratulatory mode, as Fenty puts it, I suspect it is due to a feeling of redress, given the scant regard paid to their individual and collective desire, as expressed in the 2015 election, first by Charrandass and then by the PPP and the other advocates of fast and dirty new elec-

tions.

What Fenty, however, did not mention in his letter is that many of the, as he termed it, diehard loyalist PNC members and supporters continue to hope that the coalition government would use its remaining regulation playtime to demonstrate more that it cares, that it can deliver real benefits quickly where it matters, and that it can capture the public imagination with an exciting vision for the rapid development of youths, families, communities, regions and the nation.

Mr. Granger shamelessly fights tooth and nail for his rights but tramples the rights of others DEAR EDITOR, The world recently witnessed how Mr. Granger unpatriotically pushed Guyana into a constitutional crisis when he used strongman politics to disrespect and deny the constitutional rights of Guyanese. In keeping with his strongman attitude, he refused to call elections within the constitutional time frame required by the successful passage of the no confidence motion on December 21, 2018.

Mr. Granger’s behaviour does not surprise us at all. It is how the PNC operates. We can all remember how we were forced to live through the Granger-style bullying under the Forbes Burnham administration for decades.

This kind of PNC

strongman tactic sends the wrong message to our people and it drives the sky-high incarceration rate in Guyana.

The Guyanese people need to stop Mr. Granger in his tracks by drawing awareness to his antics.

At the moment, Mr. Granger squats in office as an illegal president who is determined to remain in power through illegal and immoral means.

Entities with strong PNC influence like GECOM have also flagrantly trampled Guyanese to help Mr. Granger evade the elections. In my opinion, GECOM cannot be trusted. GECOM needs to explain how it arrives at the February timeline for elections. The people of Guyana deserve to know. We deserve

respect.

And to my fellow Guyanese, let us see how long Mr. Granger will continue to squat in office. Mr. Granger needs to be reminded that dictators are never tolerated in this world.

To this end, foreign diplomats have established that the Guyanese Government has violated the constitution This is important, because the world will now interact with Mr. Granger according to standard protocols reserved for handling dictators.

And of course, international sanctions will soon bite him. He will not like it.

But within Guyana, Mr. Granger goes unpunished for breaking the laws, and he is even supported by his fellow unpatriotic comrades. Some

commentators even resort to profound lawlessness to defend Guyana’s dictator.

The political situation is downright disgraceful.

Guyana is powered by bad behaviours that keep it underdeveloped. And the much anticipated oil wealth will do nothing for Guyana. Our behaviour stinks in this country.

Dysfunction is overt within the PNC. Mr. Granger shamelessly fights tooth and nail for his rights but tramples the rights of others. Today, he threatens peaceful protesters who draw attention to his lawlessness. Mr. Granger is a law breaker, a dictator and a bully. Guyana does not need a president with such qualities.

Are Guyanese free people or serfs?

DEAR EDITOR, The stakes are high. Billions of dollars are at stake and both the People’s Progressive Party and the People’s National Congress are fighting to get access to the oil wealth which will start to flow next year.

I am confident that there are about 25% of eligible voters that are not aligned with either party. The two major parties will be persuasive, but the swing voters must not be swayed by mere talk.

When whoever wins the next election, the citizenry must be adamant that regular Guyanese will benefit with better education, better health and better paying jobs.

This will not be given to the people because they elect a government.

They will likely enrich their friends, family and themselves. Have the Guyana political elite provided any evidence to the contrary?

Power does not have sympathy or fairness. The elite

work to get more power and keep it. If the people are not willing to fight for a fair share of the oil wealth, only a few will get small handouts like slaves.

Guyana must decide: are Guyanese free people or serfs? If you are free, you have an inherent right to the pursuit of prosperity, but it must be fought for to obtain.

The historical evidence supports my hypothesis.

Eton London was a dedicated and committed PNCR Comrade; he made his contribution!

DEAR EDITOR, I write this letter to share a brief reflection on a friend and a comrade.

I was shocked and in disbelief when news of Eton London’s passing reached me, a few days ago. I have known Eton for many years.

We were both members of the PNCR youth arm (GYSM).

When I served as National Secretary of the organization, Eton served as Chairman of the Georgetown District of the GYSM. This responsibility he took very seriously. He was present at almost every group meeting in Georgetown and kept up with the activities of each group.

Eton also served on the National Executive Committee of the organization, before he moved on to formalize his membership in the adult party group.

There was never a dull moment in a GYSM group, once Eton was present. He had the unique ability to skillfully insert himself into a debate and reformulate the mute to suit his purpose.

Eton London was an eloquent orator and a good communicator who used his tal-

ent to enrich the younger members of the GYSM. I recall Eton taking us to the Toastmasters’ Club, of which he was a member, to listen to himself and others deliver impromptu speeches. He thought of ways of which he could have helped in preparing the party’s youths for leadership.

He was an active participant and leader at many of our leadership retreats. He served as a facilitator for various leadership workshops.

Eton London was friendly, witty and kind. His willingness to serve the GYSM and the PNCR cannot be overstated and his contribution cannot go unnoticed. He was present at every activity, whether he was feeling well or not! Nothing stopped him.

I last saw Eton on August 6, 2019. We were at the Founder Leader LFS Burnham’s death anniversary at the Botanical Gardens. He was in high spirits. We talked PNCR business and he shared some of his thoughts with me.

It was usual for us to meet at such events and reflect on our role in the GYSM and party.

at both GYSM and party congresses always left lasting impressions. He will be missed at party congresses and other events.

Eton loved life, but was unafraid of death. He spoke casually of death and made it seemed like a simple transition. I recalled some years ago, when I was chairperson of the GYSM, I received a call that Eton was very ill and was hospitalized at the Georgetown Hospital. I left work on my lunch break and headed over to the hospital to see him. When I arrived at hospital, Eton was laying on the bed and seemed physically weak, but he used up every second of my time to engage me in conversation about the GYSM, his voice never failed him.

I reminded him that he should rest and we would focus on things GYSM when he was better. His response to me was “Lurlene, how you know I might be here tomorrow”, we (Continued on pgae 6)

There is method to Jagdeo and the PPP’s madness DEAR EDITOR, I crave your indulgence to allow me space in your papers to comment on the current political situation in my country.

First up, it seems that the letter writers of the Coalition Government have all gone to bed. I cannot see so much hogwash is being bandied about in relation to this erstwhile government and these writers are not coming to its defence. Or is it that they are coming to the defence but their letters are not given prominence in your papers?

On the other hand, I have observed that letters disparaging the government find favour with your papers, many of which I am certain are written by the cadre of writers employed by Freedom House.

Secondly, I have always held the view that there is always method to Jagdeo’s madness. It is in this context that I wish to frame this letter.

It is my firm belief that Jagdeo and his bunch have reviewed the success of the government’s Social Cohesion programme. It is my firm belief that the facts revealed as a result of that review has shaken the PPP to the core.

They would have realised that Guyanese are no longer susceptible to the race-baiting tactics of the PPP. They would realise that Guyanese were embracing each other’s diversity to the extent where mixed marriages were on the increase. They would have realised that the youths were not interested in the PPP’s

Jurassic policies and tactics.

So what was the next step?

Instigate a vote of no confidence. They were deeply disappointed with the end result.

The PPP is aware how much reverence the President is accorded by his Party supporters and others. So they have now decided to target the President personally in an effort to raise the ire of his supporters, so much so that they will retaliate. Once that retaliation is in motion, the evil deed would have been done. The country will descend into chaos and absolute anarchy. Jagdeo would have won. He would not care that Guyana has lost.

Editor, the PPP cannot survive without racial tensions, so they will exploit racism to the max. Guyanese, especially our youths, are not so inclined nor interested.

Jagdeo’s next ploy then was to clamber for something that his Party, and his founder leader had fought against – the Overseas Vote. We all remember that Dr. Jagan, since the 1969 elections, was calling for an end to the Overseas vote.

That was eventually abandoned in 1992 when he and President Hoyte hammered out an agreement at the instigation of the Carter Centre. So why should we now reinstate the overseas vote? Why must the game’s rules always be in favour of the PPP? Why must the rules change to suit them?

The Coalition needs to be

steadfast in this regard.

As far as I know, the Carter Centre’s formula is still in effect and the Coalition needs to insist upon that. It was the Carter Centre’s formula that has the present GECOM configuration in place. So why change other configurations?

To suit the PPP? No way Jose!

I am therefore urging the PNC/R, APNU, and the Coalition, please do not fall to Jagdeo’s tactics. Please inform your supporters to hold the moral high ground and do not, (repeat) do not engage in titfor-tat politics. Please, please, too much is at stake.

In the meantime, the Coalition supporters should be engaged in an aggressive letter-writing campaign extolling the virtues of this government since it came to power in 2015. The evidence is everywhere, but they need to write nevertheless. The PPP’s strategy of “telling a lie often enough, will make it believable” should not be ignored.

I am ashamed of the ABE countries for falling for that trick – again.

In the 70s and 80s, the PPP made everybody believe, inclusive of his supporters, that Burnham had several Swiss Bank Accounts and that he was among the richest Black men alive. Of course, none of it was true.

So Coalition, please remind your supporters that there is much work to be done or else you will lose the propaganda war.

Political Impasse DEAR EDITOR, I have previously made contributions on some aspects of the situation now facing this country. Basically, we are seeing a situation where parties are indulging in the blame game. Why is it that the PPP did not want to go back to the House and broker a worthwhile deal while preserving some of their interests? Why do they still collect their parliamentary emoluments and other perks and not have the desire to get back to the House and help to fix the situation? Is this being responsible?

Loud-mouthing is one thing, but practically working towards a solution is another.

In childhood we use to say that ‘’guitar and mouthar’’ ‘’are two different things. Yes indeed. We need to be conscientious and purposeful and to stay focused on the big picture. At this late stage in the day, we need the parties to get back to the House and extend the life of the National Assembly and get consequential matters sorted out amicably.

To my mind it is not a matter of picketing and behaving as if we have lost it. The CCJ

ruling made the opening for the parties to come together for the common good and arrive at consensus regarding the reopening of the National Assembly strictly for the purpose of arriving at an election date.

As it stands the PPP does not really know the alternative to a government resignation right now. Should this government resign now it would be leaving a vacuum in the governance of this nation. It would be opening up an opportunity for ‘warlords’ to come in and combat with the security forces. The security forces of themselves would act very drastically and make life difficult for most of us.

Sometimes we get what we wish for, but I trust that this does not befall this nation. We deserve better.

The recent picketing exercise was despicable to say the least. Those who organized it and all those who were complicit in this affair need to hang their heads in shame. In no country in the modern world would protesters been allowed such close proximity to a sitting president. No doubt bodies would have fallen either from injuries or

even mortally.

The Police and the security detail exercised extreme tolerance at this shameful display. Those who have visas should try this same exercise with the Mayor of New York or even in the precincts of the White House. I was there when current sitting Mayor of New York, Mr. De Blasio was arrested in Queens, New York, for participation in an unauthorized picket line. He was duly handcuffed, processed and charged for unlawful assembly and disorderly behaviour.

It is high time Mr. Jagdeo calls off his troops. Their insistence on unlawful demonstrations will only get them in severe trouble. Police permission should always be sought for the mounting of a picketing/demonstration exercise.

That’s the Law as civilized persons know it. Further, the media needs to concentrate on bringing the parties together and not keep on publishing articles/letters which can only be deemed as abrasive and incendiary.

The PPP is as much at fault as the government if not more, since it was their call to get back to the House expeditiously and not fan the flames of racial animosity. Editor, you and your other publishing house colleagues have your work neatly cut out.

We should welcome “Big Brothers” in our time of need due - a transgression of far less magnitude DEAR EDITOR, A recent statement from the ABE countries should be seen by the Guyanese public as a breath of fresh air to our fledgling democracy. The degree of disrespect meted out to our constitution before and after the NCM on Dec 21st 2018 by President Granger, nullifies his pledge to uphold and protect the Constitution at his 2015 swearing in.

With nothing legally in place in the hands of the populace or opposition to control the caprice of the president’s assault on the Constitution, we should welcome the proverbial “big brothers” (the ABE Countries) making a statement, calling on the president to “set an election date immediately in full compliance with Guyana’s Constitution”, after he was informed by Gecom’s chairwoman that Gecom would be ready for elections by February 2020.

The statement from the triumvirate further added, “However, we deeply regret that, by surpassing September 18, the Government is in breach of the Constitution following its failure to adhere to the decisions of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on June 18th (last) and its subsequent orders.”

It was expected that Guyanese of all persuasions would have welcomed this statement from the ABE countries with a sigh of relief, but that was not to be. Cries of interference in our internal affairs swiftly emanated from commentators on a mission to propagate the Coalition Government.

This is nothing new. A minister of a PPP Government had done this to the face of an American Ambassador before, for merely mentioning that Local Government Elections were

than what has been committed by the Coalition. It reaffirms the notion that “absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

Unless we as a people seek redress to control the checks and balances of this absolute power given to our presidents by our constitution, we would always need the help of “big brothers” to nip dictatorial rule in the bud in the future.

The truth be told, had it not been for the influence of the ABE countries, particularly America, the third world would have been a much more hostile place for survival and enfranchisement of the poor. Brutal dictators would have ruled the roost.

The hierarchy of the PPP knows that the PNC would have never been out of power without the help of “big brother” in the past, but would not care to admit that. Had it not been for the US, there would have never been free and fair elections in Guyana in 1992.

The ABE countries are cognizant of the fact that third world politicians, left to their own devices, will do anything to suppress the will of their people to stay in power. In this regard, the statement from “big brothers” expressing that, “the prevailing political uncertainty undermines Guyanese institutions, compromises economic opportunities and delays development across all areas including infrastructure, education, health and social services”, is full of merit.

Those who see the ABE countries as intervening in our internal affairs have axes to grind.

From page 5 laughed and encouraged each other. After that we spoke often on the phone. A week later Eton was out of the hospital and called to remind me of where we left off the conversation. That was the nature of the comrade.

He was invested in the PNCR and its youth arm. His enthusiasm and passion for things PNCR was great, this cannot be denied.

He had some health challenges but he never give up, he was a fighter. He never let those challenges hold him back. A few years ago I saw him and he said to me, “Lurlene, you know this leg is showing off itself, if he think he gon keep me back, ah gon cut he tail off”.

I pleaded with him that he should hold off

and see if things would change, as he was already an amputee. He looked me straight in the face and said “so you begging fuh he nah, he getting disgusting, he think I can’t do without he.” These were some of the light conversations he had about himself.

Eton London was a true comrade and friend, he made his contribution at all levels of the GYSM and the PNCR, whether directly or indirectly. He was a committed and dedicated member of the PNCR. He will forever be missed. He fought many battles, but this last one won out!

Guyanese-born sex defendant claims he was not fleeing jail time STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (silive.com/new) Brian Prince insisted Monday he wasnt playing a game of hide-andseek with authorities last week.

The New Brighton man, who failed to appear in court on Sept. 16 for his scheduled sentencing in a sex case, told a judge he had a good reason for boarding a bus last week bound for North Carolina.

Prince, 33, said he was

headed down south to drop off his luggage with relatives.

He then planned to return to Staten Island for his sentencing.

Prince was arrested Friday. Assistant District Attorney Rhiannon LaTour had a different take on the events.

She said Prince told cops he planned to fly to his native Guyana from North Carolina and stay

there for a few years.

In fact, Prince had previously told a detective to “Catch him if he can,” when the cop contacted him after he ditched the sentencing, said LaTour.

“I didnt say that,” Prince blurted out. “… I honestly miscalculated the court date.

I know I pled guilty. I manned up. … For me to flee the country when I have no money, how can I do that?”

Better paddy price for farmers this crop

Paddy prices have been good for farmers this crop, the GRDB says The Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) has announced higher prices for farmers this crop.

From yesterday, millers were being paid between $41,526 to $53,830 per tonne of paddy.

“When harvesting commenced a few weeks ago, prices ranged from $46,140 to $40,000 per tonne.

Second crop paddy prices are higher than the prices paid during the first crop of 2019,” the regulator reported yesterday in a statement.

“At the close of the

paddy intake period for first crop 2019, farmers were paid $50,754 to $30,760 per tonne.

Prior to the commencement of harvesting for the second crop, GRDB conducted training of rice farmers to grade paddy and rice in all producing regions. The most recent training was held on the island of Wakenaam.”

In recent years, rice farmers have been reaping bigger harvests thanks to better quality of seed paddy.

Rice has been a big foreign exchange contributor to the economy, behind gold.

It will also be overtaken by the oil and gas sector come next year.

State Supreme Court Justice Alexander Jeong didnt say whether or not he believes Prince.

The judge said he wants the Probation Department to interview the defendant before Prince returns to court on Oct. 7 for sentencing on his plea to attempted first-degree sexual abuse.

Jeong said the Probation interview would help him decide whether to impose the previously promised sentence

of three years in prison or whether to increase it.

Prince had remained free on his own recognizance after pleading guilty on July 29.

The maximum sentence Prince could receive under his sex conviction is four years in prison.

The defendant was initially arrested on March 19, 2018.

A criminal complaint alleged he sexually abused a young girl on three occasions

in November and December of 2017.

The defendant twice forcibly touched the youngsters private parts, and once made her touch his, said the complaint.

The victim was under age 13, an indictment said.

Defense lawyer Mark J. Fonte declined comment on the case.

Assistant District Attorney Melissa OLeary is also prosecuting the case.

GTT offers Free Blaze installation - company has over 20,000 customers The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) is moving aggressively to corner the fibre optic market.

Yesterday, the US-owned telephone company which is currently in negotiations with the Government of Guyana over the breaking of its telecoms monopoly, is offering free Blaze hook-up.

“Persons in Blaze eligible areas are encouraged to apply now for the GTT Blaze

service and enjoy free installation charges through the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT),” the company announced in a statement yesterday.

“This is definitely the time to sign-up for the Blaze service; customers will be able to save $15,000 which they would normally pay for the installation. Over 700 persons have applied for the service within the past month; so I want to implore other persons

in Blaze ready areas to make the best out of this deal,” said Tashandra Inniss, Senior Marketing Executive at GTT. In mid-August, the company introduced its Blaze installation campaign for the benefit of those applying for the service.

Inniss said the campaign has resulted in a hike in the number of customers applying for the service.

To date, Blaze is enjoyed by some 20,000 subscribers.

Inniss explained how individuals can find out if their area is Blaze ready.

“Persons can visit our GTT website at www.gtt.co.gy click on Blaze (About) and they will see all the Current Service Areas,” she explained.

Inniss also revealed that GTT will soon roll out the Blaze service in Parika, Diamond/Grove and Corriverton Areas.

GTT offers three different speeds of internet on the Blaze network.

The Ignite/Fibre 5 package offers up to five megabytes per second for $10,499; the Flaming package/Fibre 20 offers 20 megabytes per second for $12,499 and the Inferno/Fibre 50 package offers up to 50 megabytes per second at a cost of $15,499 monthly.

Each plan comes with 900mins (450mins for Blaze to Blaze calls and 450mins for Blaze to landline).

“Subscribers not only get to experience the faster speed, unhindered gaming and enjoy the complimentary minutes, but they are able to move from one area to the next and still

ExxonMobil seeks to land fibre optic cable from production platform

ExxonMobil is looking for advice on the laying of a subsea fibre optic cable to with the Liza Destiny and its Georgetown offices.

ExxonMobil is looking to lay a subsea fibre optic cable that will connect its offshore operations with its Georgetown operations.

Yesterday, ExxonMobil’s local operating company, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL) in a request for information, said that it wants a support service that will help in acquiring a permit for the network.

Named the “Fiber Optic Enablement Project”, EEPGL said it is “seeking

to identify suppliers who can provide environmental and regul a t o r y s u p p o r t services for the permitting of a subsea fiber optic network connecting offshore facilities in the Stabroek Block to cable stations onshore Georgetown.”

EEPGL said that it is looking for the information requested to be submitted by October 7th, 2019.

H o w e v e r, i n t e r e s t e d companies will have to be

registered with the Centre For Local Business Development in Guyana via www.CLBDGuyana.com or by visiting the South Road center directly.

The cable will be connected to the nerve of ExxonMobil’s offshore oil production platform in the Stabroek Block…the Liza Destiny.

It will likely in real time allow ExxonMobil and other stakeholders to know what is happening on board the production platform.

A date for elections The least of our problems is naming a date for elections. Guyana is facing international isolation, the United States, Britain, the European Union and the Commonwealth have all indicated that it will be difficult for them to support Guyanas development needs in light of them deeming the government as being unconstitutional.

Development aid will be frozen from all the international agencies in which those countries and the Commonwealth have a

hand. This will be done very quietly and without any fanfare.

Things look bleak for the government. The InterAmerican Development Bank is not likely to disburse any further funding. The United Nations Development Programme which is providing technical assistance is likely to play and wait-and- see game.

The World Bank and the IMF are going to adopt a hands-off attitude until after the elections.

The government just announced that it will

commence work on the Linden to Mabura Road this year. What this means is not that the road works will commence but that the necessary prequalification of contractors will commence. This too is most probably going to be affected since the United Kingdom is providing the resources.

The naming of date of elections is not going to affect the international isolation of the government. It has called this upon itself and upon the Guyanese people by its prevarication over

The Granger administration is not one which can ever again be trusted by the international community to comply with what the Commonwealth calls, the rule of law and the Constitution. Guyana has found itself in a real embarrassing situation.

The government failed to undertake a diplomatic offensive to justify its actions in not proroguing parliament, resigning and in calling fresh elections by September 18, 2019. It is now reaping the rewards of that failure. It must not blame anyone for doing their homework.

But regardless of if it names an elections date t o d a y, t h e p r o b l e m s a t GECOM is enough to give the entire nation a headache. GECOM is riddled with problems.

GECOMs Secretariat had no reason to commence h o u s e - t o - h o u s e registration in the absence of a full Commission.

A n d q u i t e h o n e s t l y,

things have not improved since the new Chairperson took office. They have gotten more worrying.

House to house registration was concluded earlier than expected but a decision was taken to merge the new database from this exercise with the old database. The new data is unverified and that itself is a major sore point. The merging of the two databases will result in greater confusion.

The Chairperson has indicated that GECOM will be ready to deliver elections

by February. But there was no precise date offered and there is no indication as to how GECOM plans to address the confusion which will arise from the merging of the lists.

What steps will be taken to verify new registrants so that the Opposition can repose greater confidence in the List?

Naming a date for elections, does not answer any of these questions. It is clear also that Cabinet is still around. Naming a date for election does not

answer the concerns about the continuing existence of Cabinet.

A date for elections therefore does not guarantee that we will have free and fair elections. It does not assure us that GECOM will be able to sort out the mess that is likely to be caused by its insistence on merging the two sets of data. It does not end the political divisions on the Commission.

So why all this concern about a date for elections when the credibility of those elections is still a matter of concern? A date for elections does not mean that those problems will disappear.

I am questioning David Granger’s sincerity I don’t believe the PPP and the entity named APNU+AFC can deliver transformative horizons.

They both are stuck in old, ethnic politics, imprisoned in the old political culture that was born after Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan became political adversaries in the mid-1950s.

It is ironic that one can

make the statement about APNU+AFC stuck in ethnic politics, when the party of Walter Rodney and the multiracial AFC are part of the power establishment. The glowing truth is that both the WPA and AFC have sacrificed their souls on a Faustian journey with one of the two ethnic Leviathans. The WPA and the AFC are now evanes-

cent footnotes in Guyana’s history.

Even though I supported the no-confidence vote, I broke with my own conscience and decided to offer David Granger my vote. I put a condition that all Guyanese should have supported. I wrote that if Granger intervened in the madness that was destroying UG, I would

see him as a patriot and give him my vote, (see my column of Sunday, January 13, 2019 headlined, “My vote for Granger depends on his action on UG.” From the start of 2019 when I made that commitment to President Granger, he never lifted a finger to halt the deterioration, wild, colossal waste of limited funds, and ostentatious leadership that lacked competence at UG. When the Vice Chancellor’s contract came up for renewal in June this year, all three governmental representatives on the UG Council – Ministries of Education and Finance, and Vincent Alexander representing the Government of Guyana – voted for contract renewal.

This same president, addressing an AfricanGuyanese forum last Sunday, told his audience that he intends for Guyana, under his presidency, to have highquality education from nursery to university. The president’s sincerity can be questioned by every Guyanese in and out of the territory.

How does the president want high-quality education when the quality of our education at our only university has declined under his tenure? Last week, it didn’t make the news, but the sewage system at UG suffered a breakdown. UG lecturer Charlene Wilkinson, who campaigned for Mr. Granger’s party in 2015, released a devastating critique of the quality of UG education. I will quote briefly from her open appeal to the university community. She intoned; “I have been back

home ten years now, and I have seen low levels at UG, but this here is very low. UG is being battered and raped before our eyes”.

For the past three years these things occurred under the presidency of David Granger, whose administration voted in June for the contract renewal of Vice Chancellor (he has since resigned) Ivelaw Griffith. Can one take Granger seriously when he speaks of his policy of ushering a period of quality education from baby school to university level?

One of the things that amuse me about my fellow Guyanese is how their voices reverberated till to Timbuktu when Jagdeo and Ramotar ruled Guyana, but there must be a plague battering Guyana, because these people’s voices are gone. Is a certain virus wiping out the voices of Guyanese?

If Jagdeo had run down UG and then spoken emotionally of wanting UG to be a topclass institution, he would have met with systematic derision. If the courts had ruled that a minister was in contempt of court and should be jailed, and Jagdeo used hegemonic authority derived from the constitution to overrule the courts, all hell would have broken loose.

Mr. Granger obviously is on the campaign trail, but he should select issues that he can wax lyrical about. Not issues that when he speaks on them, he chips away at his own credibility. He gave assurance that he would honour the results of the election. But he didn’t obey the constitution. He tossed aside a cer-

This remains one of the most dangerous turns on the highway of authoritarianism. He said the words “cooperation with the Opposition Leader”, by the President of the CCJ, mean that he too must submit six names for the GECOM chair for the Opposition Leader to decide. In doing that, Granger has now turned certain articles in the constitution in the opposite direction.

Granger is continuing in overdrive mode on that regrettable highway. He tells the nation something like this, “Look, no court has named a date for the election, so why should I set a date?” The courts did. They said three months after the no-confidence vote elections must he held. They are still to be held.

Non-Practice of Preventative Medicine Will Have an Impact on the National Treasury - Neurosurgeon

uyana's first neurosurgeon Dr Amarnauth Dukhi said that preventative medicine will have an impact on the national treasury and a country's economy, as if it is not practiced there are dire consequences to be faced at a high cost.

During Kaieteur Radio's weekly programme titled Your Health Matters on which he was a guest, Dr. Dukhi said “I think generally medicine here in Guyana, we are way back in terms of prevention. Preventative medicine is important as it will eventually have an impact on the National Treasury.”

He went on to say that the non-practice of preventative medicine will have an impact on the national treasury and the economy simply because if you can prevent something from progressing then you don't have to treat any complications that may occur later.

Dr. Dukhi is the Head of Neurosurgery at the

Suspect turns self over to police after killing ex-convict

A

man accused of stabbing an exconvict to death at a local Guinness Bar in New Amsterdam on Sunday morning turned himself over to police at the Central Police Station.

Dead is Delroy "SlantEye" James, 33, a labourer of Patrick Dam, Angoy's Avenue, New Amsterdam.

Reports are that James was imbibing in the company of friends including the suspect at a Guinness Bar located at Main Street, New Amsterdam when an argument erupted between him and the now arrested suspect.

It was just around 03:45 Sunday when the argument escalated and turned physical. A scuffle ensued and the suspect whipped out a knife and dealt James several stabs to his lower back.

James collapsed and the suspect left the scene. He was immediately rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

Kaieteur News understands that it is the second incident within a

44 trials, 31 convictions at Sexual Offences Court since 2017

T

he Sexual Offences Court in Guyana has been making significant headway in bringing perpetrators to justice; something that, in the past, took a very long time to happen.

Since its inception in November 2017, the court has heard 44 cases, and seen 31 convictions with 13 acquittals. Sentences for those convictions ranged from nine years to life.

Yo n e t t e C u m m i n g s Edwards, OR, CCH recently provided the statistics. She said since the establishment of the specialised court, the judiciary has seen a “seachange” in the management, adjudication and prosecution of sexual offence matters.

This is according to a report released by the Department of Public Information.

The first sexual offences court was launched in 2017 at the Supreme Court in Georgetown. In May of this

year, a similar court was launched in the Berbice county and more recently, on Monday last, another facility was established in the county of Essequibo.

According to Justice Cummings-Edwards, the court has brought with it a swifter system that helps both victims and defendants.

“We are happy that because of the Sexual Offence Court, victims and defendants no longer have to wait to know their fate.

Victims do not have to give

their evidence twice since we have what is called paper committal in the magistrates' court, a speedier system where the magistrate makes the committal on the bases of the statement,” the chancellor said.

She explained that the Sexual Offences Act passed in 2010 provides for a special court environment to try cases under the Act. The average duration of the trials stands at five days.

“This reduces the time spent in court, the time for

the processing and adjudication of a case involving sexual offences,” Justice Cummings-Edwards disclosed.

The offences for which tr ials w er e co n d u cted include rape, rape of a child under 16, sexual activity with a child by a family member and carnal knowledge. The ages of the Chancellor of the victims range from 3 to 77 Judiciary (ag), Justice years old.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) announced that the Management of the Guyana/Suriname Ferry Services has advised that M.B. Sandaka will be in operation from Thursday, September 26, 2019 until further advised.

“It will depart Moleson Creek Terminal - Guyana at 9:00 hrs. (Check-in: 06:30hrs to 08:00hrs) and depart South DrainS u r i n a m e a t 11 : 3 0 h r s (check-in: 08:00hrs 10:00hrs) to their respective local times,” the ministry explained yesterday.

However, there will be restrictions. No containers will be allowed and there will be restrictions of the vehicles, including on weight and height.

“Please note that the M.B. Sandaka cannot accommodate 20ft and 40ft containers and trucks with height and width in excess of

3 meters and 2.7 meters respectively. Management regrets any inconvenience caused,” the statement disclosed. In late May, Government announced the halt of service from the troubled MV Canawaima ferry after it encountered mechanical issues.

The ferry has been in operation for over 15 years, bringing goods and container and taking passengers and vehicles between the two c o u n t r i e s .

As a result, trade had slowed but there was increased traffic on the 'backtrack' routes along the Springlands shore and other Corentyne areas.

Under an agreement signed between the two countries, the ferry service was supposed to have been operated jointly. However, the Government of Guyana has complained that they have been left with the burdened of maintaining the vessel. It had come to a point where a tug had to be utilized to help the limping MV Canawaima.

Since May, there have been ongoing talks between the two countries to come to an arrangement with Guyana insisting that Suriname must play a role in helping to maintain the ferry service.

Accused leaders, “Fyah” and “Sandbad”, committed to trial Nakool “Fyah” Manohar of Number 43 Village, Corentyne, Berbice and Premnauth “Sanbad” Persaud of Cromarty Village, Upper Corentyne, Berbice were yesterday committed to stand trial in Berbice High Court by Magistrate Renita Singh.

Both prisoners, who stood before Magistrate Singh at the Whim Magistrates Court were represented by Attorney-atlaw Joel Edmond. Attorneyat -law Sanjeev Datadin is also representing Manohar and Persaud but Edmond stood in for him yesterday.

The decision was made yesterday after a lengthy Preliminary Inquiry (PI) concluded with the Magistrate indicating that there was enough evidence to have the matter taken to the high court where a jury will determine if Manohar and Persaud are guilty of the crime they were charged for.

Meanwhile, their Attorney, Joel Edmond has since indicated that he will file a case to have the committal squashed on behalf of his clients. This he said will be done sometime during this week.

The men were jointly charged with murder committed on Tilaknauth Mohabir and Mahesh Sarjoo in Corentyne waters. The charge had detailed that the men committed the act between April 27th and May 3rd 2018 when 20 fishermen were attacked in Suriname waters, beaten, tied up and thrown overboard.

Manohar, the owner of several fishing vessels moored daily at the Number 43 Fishing Port is accused of being the mastermind of the attack in retaliation of his brother’s death. His brother was reportedly murdered in Suriname by other fishermen.

Persaud on the other hand is said to be the ring leader of the gang of pirates that attacked four fishing boats and committing the deadly attacks out at sea.

Five fishermen survived the deadly attack that rocked Guyana and Suriname with only four bodies thus far recovered. Eleven fishermen are feared dead and still missing.

There is currently a Commission of Inquiry (COI) ongoing in Berbice headed by the Chairman of the Commission Rishi Thakur.

Two men charged separately for sexual assault of underage girls A 50-year-old man of Kitty Georgetown was yesterday placed before a city magistrate for an indictable charge of sexual assault.

John Fitzgerald Hopkinson who appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on April 26, last at Queen Street, Kitty he sexually assaulted a child under the age of 16.

According to information, on the day in question the man braced the child to a gate and rubbed his body against her.

The incident was reported and the defendant was arrested and later charged for the offence.

He was granted bail in the sum of $20, 000 under the condition that he is to not come within 50 feet of the victim or attempt to make any contact with her.

The defendant did not plead to the offence which stated that between August 1, 2019 and August 31, 2019, at Worthmanville, Georgetown he engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.

According to reports, during the aforementioned time Mohammed rubbed his hand between the child’s thighs and touched her vagina.

The matter was reported to the police and the defendant was arrested and the charge was made out against him.

He is out on bail in the sum of $100, 000 while his matter is expected to be recalled sometime next month.

Low salaries for local oil “I didn’t escape, I went back to the workers shock Coalition Govt. station” - man tells magistrate Recent revelations that locals working on the Liza Destiny oil production platform were being paid a little more than minimum wage has not been welcomed by Government.

Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, during a radio interview on Kaieteur Radio last week was asked whether he is willing to intervene.

According to the minister, he is definitely not happy that locals were getting far less than what Trinidadians for example are getting in their country.

The Liza Destiny is the countrys first floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.

With promises of a better life and much talk about job creation, it was found that one company, run by foreign players, have been paying workers, including from laundry and cooking department just over $70,000 monthly.

Last week, local lawyer, Sanjeev Datadin announced that he was preparing to sue

the local company which he said was operating like an employment agency, discriminating against Guyanese.

Glaringly, in one example, a cook on a normal emergency vessel in Trinidad could take home at least TT$15,000 (US$2,214) fortnightly. This is 12 times what one worker aboard a vessel in the offshore area in ExxonMobils oilfield is getting monthly ($70,000).

There are several cases similar in Guyana.

In this case, it is not a service vessel that is standing by next to the FPSO that the Guyanese workers are stationed.

Rather, it is on the Liza Destiny itself.

Kaieteur News was told that while ExxonMobil paid the contractor, these benefits are not passed on to workers.

The workers were paid a fraction.

In fact, insiders say that comparisons to what persons working right in the region found shocking instances of how Guyanese workers are

just not benefitting as expected.

Last Tuesday, Datadin announced that he was preparing to sue an oil service company, and possibly Exxon, after a client complained.

The employee said he is asked to stay one month aboard the ship and there are no allowances.

According to Datadin, in effect, the staffer is working 24 hours, as he has no way to come off the ship. He intends to have the court make a key ruling that will speak to how Guyanese oil workers are being paid.

Workers have also been complaining of having their WiFi cut after hours.

“We are being told to work 28 days and for a low pay. We have to service. Then you cut the WiFi. How can we talk to our families,” the worker asked.

According to Jordan, the entire Government apparatus will be paying attention, including from the labour side of things.

Granger heightens security ahead of PPP/C’s E’bo protest

- insists he is a psychiatric patient; threatens to escape again A man who claimed to be a psychiatric patient and in need of an evaluation, was yesterday remanded to prison on four charges.

Forty-one-year-old Gary Grant of 24 Norton Street, Lodge, pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to him.

The first charge alleged that on September 19, 2019 at the Stabroek Market Police Outpost, while he was in lawful custody for the offence of simple larceny, he escaped.

It was further alleged that on the same date he stole a cell phone valued at $35,000 property of Nadina Maloney.

Also it was alleged that he damaged a quantity of articles valued at $39,000 property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on September 19, last at the Stabroek Market Police Outpost.

Finally, it was alleged that on September 19, last at the Stabroek Market Police Outpost he behaved in a disorderly manner.

At the time the four charges were read to him, Grant was arraigned in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Sherdel IsaacsMarcus.

After the charges were

read, Grant stated, “Me ain’t do nothing the officer lash me in my head so I can’t remember nothing. I am a patient of Dr. Harry and I need ah evaluation.”

The defendant went on to say, “My name is not Grant. I am Randy so the police best go find this Grant person so he can come and answer them charges.”

According to information, on the day in question around 16:30 hours, police ranks arrested Grant for allegedly stealing a cellular phone from a female. He was placed in custody at the Stabroek Market Police Outpost where he was handcuffed by the left hand to a metal bar attached to a wall inside the structure and placed to sit on a bench.

Kaieteur News had reported that ranks at the Outpost informed that all through the afternoon the man kept kicking the walls of the facility and was throwing items (food bowl, books and wooden objects) at them while shouting that he is very strong and is a very good sprinter.

At around 22:20 hours, all hell broke loose as the prisoner exploded into action.

Ranks said the man

suddenly jumped into the air (like a karate fighter), kicking down the entire enquiries counter of the outpost, which was made of plywood.

Sources indicated that as books and pens flew in all direction, a cutlass that ranks had secured under the counter became exposed.

It was this cutlass that the prisoner used to chop off the chain of the handcuff and escaped. However, before leaving, the prisoner caused the structure to be plunged into darkness when he used the cutlass to chop and sever electrical wires thatched together to provide lighting.

The prisoner eventually managed to make good his escape.

Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell objected to bail based on the nature and penalties of the offence.

The magistrate upheld the submission made by the prosecutor and remanded Grant to prison until October 7, 2019 for his next court appearance.

While leaving the courtroom the defendant said “I escape and come back and still get charge for escaping is best I pick this handcuff and escape again.”

Commonwealth Secretary General calls on Guyana to name date for elections

By Romario Blair The heavy presence of armed security personnel within the presidential motorcade yesterday on the Essequibo Coast, is a clear indication that the president is taking all precautions, following protest at the Pegasus Hotel last week led by the parliamentary opposition. As the president made his way from the Hampton Court Aerodrome yesterday, he was greeted by protesters from the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/ C). During yesterday’s protest, there was an unusually greater presence of armed security personnel. The presidential motorcade was accompanied by members of the Riot squad, and an additional bus containing ranks of the Guyana Police Force, along with three additional vehicles containing presidential guards. The main road all the way to State House in Anna Regina was line with police officers at

multiple checkpoints. The entrance to the State House was barricaded, and manned by senior police ranks; an unusual sight on the Coast.

In the meantime, some 67 party members lined the Hampton Court Public road in party colours, with placards in hands, shouting slangs at the passing convoy. The protestors later made their way to Anna Regina where they protested the President at State House. Former Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, told this publication yesterday that members of the PPP/C will continue to protest the Government until a date for election is announced by the president. “We are here to protest against an illegal government, Granger is on this coast campaign for his party and he has a right to do so. But he comes claiming that he is the president, using tax payers’ resources… The people of Guyana are not willing to

stand by and lay it down, we are going to protest everywhere people show up and usurp the responsibility of a president or minister because they are illegal,” said Dr. Ramsammy.

D r. R a m s a m m y a l s o pointed out that international bodies are observing the country’s political crisis, and are voicing their concerns. He went on to say “The whole world condemns them for assuming the role of dictators this morning we have the secretary general of the Commonwealth issuing a statement and deeming the president illegal and that they are acting outside of the institution.”

The former Minister said that the PPP will not give in to intimidation or harassment, since it is the right of any citizen under a democratic administration to peacefully protest.

LONDON - CMC – Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has called on President David Granger and “ all relevant stakeholders and institutions” to immediately set a date for fresh regional and general elections in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

A statement issued by the London-based Commonwealth Secretariat yesterday said that Scotland is urging all stakeholders “to restore constitutional rule in Guyana by immediately setting an early election date in consonance with its constitution, enabling elections to be held without further delay”.

The Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), which is the country’s highest court, had in July said that the vote of no confidence which had been passed last December against Granger’s coalition administration was valid and urged all parties to adhere to the provisions of the country’s constitution. Under the Guyana Constitution, the elections should take place 90 days after the vote of no confidence is passed. The Constitution also makes provision for an extension of the period based only on a twothirds majority vote in the Parliament. President Granger has said in the past that he

Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland would only announce a date for the elections after he has been given the go ahead by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) that it is prepared to host the event.

The Dominica-born Commonwealth Secretary-General said she had taken note of the CCJ ruling and that the Court “was clear that the Guyana Constitution sets out certain requirements for the time of an election after the valid passing of a no confidence motion.

“The rule of law and constitutional governance are fundamental Commonwealth values to which Guyana has subscribed,” she said in the statement.

“In this regard, and in accordance with the ruling of the CCJ, a general election in Guyana is now constitutionally overdue. A general election should be held in accordance with the unambiguous constitutional imperative to do so,” the statement said, noting that Secretary-General has spoken with the GECOM Chair, retired justice Claudette Singh and discussed Commonwealth support to GECOM. Last week, Singh said an election can be held here by the end of February next year.

The main opposition People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), which has been campaigning for the early poll after successfully tabling the motion of no confidence, said it is disappointed that the polls would most likely be held in February next year.

In a joint statement last week, the United States, Britain and the European Union, said “the prevailing political uncertainty undermines Guyanese institutions, compromises economic opportunities and delays development”.

Trump says he’s not taking talk of impeachment over Ukraine seriously NEW YORK (Reuters) U.S. President Donald Trump yesterday shrugged off talk about impeachment over reports that he had asked his Ukrainian counterpart to launch an investigation that could damage Democratic political rival Joe Biden.

Asked how seriously he was taking the threat of impeachment by Congress, Trump said, “Not at all seriously.”

On Sunday, Trump acknowledged that he discussed Democratic presidential hopeful Biden and his son in a July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times on Friday said Trump repeatedly asked the Ukrainian leader in

the call to investigate the involvement of Biden’s son, Hunter, with a Ukrainian energy company. He also asked Zelenskiy to work with his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, who had been urging Ukrainian officials to investigate Joe Biden and his family. As he arrived at the United Nations for the General Assembly yesterday, Trump told reporters: “We had a perfect phone call with the president of Ukraine. Everybody knows it. It’s just a Democrat witch hunt.”

Trump did not provide evidence the allegations were politically motivated.

Media reports about the phone call stemmed from a classified whistleblower report from the U.S. intelligence community. The call has sparked a political battle between Democrats warning of a national security threat and Republicans turning it into an attack on former vice president Biden, a frontrunner in the field of Democrats seeking to challenge Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Democrats are outraged that Trump may have sought help in the election from a foreign country, especially after Special Counsel Rob-

ert Mueller concluded Russia waged a widespread influence and propaganda campaign to help Trump win in 2016.

IMPEACHMENT OR NOT? “He thinks he can get away with it. The president thinks he can act with impunity,” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said at a news conference in Hartford, Connecticut. The Democratic leader of a key congressional panel said on Sunday the pursuit of Trump’s impeachment may be the “only remedy” to the situation. However, it is far from clear whether there is enough support for Democrats in the House of Representative to launch impeachment proceedings. Any such effort would face a hurdle getting through the Republican-led Senate.

The media reports about the phone call also said Trump repeatedly asked Zelenskiy to investigate whether Biden misused his position as vice president under former President Barack Obama to threaten to withhold U.S. aid unless a prosecutor who was looking into the gas company in which Biden’s son was involved was fired.

Woman delivers baby on hospital floor after allegedly being forced to walk to washroom

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation GPHC CEO, Ret’d Brigadier George Lewis Medical staff and patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) were reportedly in shock yesterday after a mother in labour delivered her baby as she walked to a washroom within the hospital’s Maternity Unit.

It is alleged that the woman was forced by nurses to walk to the washroom despite her claims of discomfort.

This publication was reliably informed that around 13:40 hours the woman who was in labour indicated that she felt like going to the washroom to ease her bowels.

A nurse told this publication this is usually a sensation many times experienced by pregnant woman during the process of labour.

Nevertheless, it is alleged that a nurse at the public health institution

instructed the woman to walk to the washroom even though she was in the throes of labour and was indicating repeatedly that she would not be able to walk the distance to the washroom area.

Sources said upon the n u r s e ’s i n s i s t e n c e , t h e woman attempted to walk the short distance but never made it there as “the baby came down and landed on the hospital floor”.

GPHC Chief Executive O f f i c e r ( C E O ), Retired Brigadier George Lewis, yesterday confirmed the occurrence to this publication. In giving credence to the unfortunate incident the CEO made it clear to this publication that it is being investigated with the focus of putting systems in place to ensure there is no such reoccurrence.

He further stated that upon the completion of

investigations, should any hospital staff be found guilty of negligence, his department will enforce the full brunt of the law that surrounds discipline in an incident of that nature.

Meanwhile, CEO Lewis informed this publication that the infant is in no present danger and has only sustained bruises from the incident.

The CEO said that immediately after the incident a CT scan was conducted on the infant to ensure there were no serious or internal injuries.

He also revealed that the baby will be monitored around the clock by professional staffers even as he informed that the hospital’s management will pay for all medical expenses incurred in ensuring the baby is safe.

According to CEO L e w i s , t h e h o s p i t a l ’s intentions to ensure all is well with the baby have been communicated to the grandparents of the baby.

Guyanese family mourns after recently graduated daughter shot dead NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Police in suburban Orange County are looking for two men who burst into an apartment, opened fire, and killed a recent college graduate.

At a home in Walden, a tight-knit family with roots in Guyana was receiving v i s i t o r s M o n d a y, a n d mourning a terrible loss.

Chelsea Debidin, a 21year-old deans list student and recent grad from SUNY-Orange County, was shot and killed while visiting her boyfriend at his familys Knox Village apartment.

“They kicked in the front door and basically opened fire on the

residents there, in the apartment,” New Windsor Police Deputy Chief Michael Farbent said.

The local police are being assisted by state police and the FBI in the search for the two men. A neighbour told CBS2s Tony Aiello off-camera, he heard a bang, the sound of glass breaking and then three rapid gunshots just after midnight early Saturday morning.

“No criminal record, a college student, a good girl by all accounts,” Farbent said. “As far as the

motive right now, were not 100 percent certain.”

Private Sector urges Granger to fix February month-end elections date without delay The Private Sector Commission (PSC) yesterday urged President David Granger to fix general elections for February monthend as defined by the timeline of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

According to PSC, a group of the businesses that include banks and other major services company, it would have preferred to wait and give the Chairman of GECOM, Justice (Retd) Claudette Singh, time since her appointment on 29th July, 2019, to advise the President on the readiness to conduct Regional and General Elections, before making any further comment on this matter.

H o w e v e r, t h i s a l l changed as on Thursday, 1 9 t h S e p t e m b e r, 2 0 1 9 , Justice Singh informed President Granger by letter that “Given all the objective factors, in addition to the deliberations of the Commission and my most recent consultations with our Secretariat, I have concluded and take this opportunity to officially inform you, that the Guyana Elections Commission will be able to deliver credible elections by the end of February 2020”.

As a result o f t h e developments, the PSC said it is now calling on President Granger to name a date for the holding of elections by the end of February as defined by GECOM, “without any further prevarication or delay”.

However, PSC flayed GECOMs decision which it said is in contravention of the Constitutional obligation to have been

“The Private S e c t o r believes it to be unfortunate that since the No-Confidence Motion was validly passed some nine months ago that the country has been subjected to a series of unwarranted delays from honoring the

constitutional requirement to have held elections within three months of the motion being passed in the National Assembly.”

The commission also urged the President to recognize that the condemnation of his government as being in “breach of the Constitution” by the international community, which includes Guyana s major developmental partners- the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union and now the Commonwealth Secretary General- is of serious consequence for Guyana.

“We further urge the President to recognize the significant number of statements from a wide cross section of our society, including the Bar Association, the religious community, the Chamber of Commerce and AmCham, expressing their deep concern of the unconstitutional status of the government.”

The PSC pointed out that the statement from the international community has, in fact, emphasized that Guyanas economic development and the ability of those countries to support the countrys development needs, is now dangerously compromised.

“The PSC must point out that the consequence of doing business under a government shorn of its Constitutional authority becomes virtually impossible due to the premiums placed on international equity and borrowings and the demands for com p l i a n c e w i t h procedures of international financial institutions.”

NA United blank Cougars; Monedderlust trounce Arsenal When play in the Berbice Football Association (BFA) leg of the GFF/NAMILCO Thunderbolt Flour Power U-17 Intra Association League continued on the weekend, recording wins were New Amsterdam United and Monedderlust of West Berbice.

Playing on Sunday at the Esplanade Ground in New Amsterdam, home team New Amsterdam United took care of Cougars Football Club 2-0 in a keen contest which saw the first half ending 0-0.

It was until the 58th minute that the deadlock was broken thanks to a Timothy Sommercell goal, NA United taking the lead which was doubled two minutes later on account of

Tyrick Ogletons strike.

On Saturday at the same venue, in steamy conditions, Monedderlust Football Club trounced Arsenal Football Club, 4-0 after leading 3-0 at the half way mark. Raul Semple in the 9th minute, Michael Jordan in the 20th and Emanuel Moore two minutes later set the perfect platform for their teams performance.

Full points were cemented in the 70th minute when Raul Semple achieved his second goal of the match.

The League continues this weekend at the same venue with one match daily from 13:00hrs.

A

second half strike from Anand Rodrigues handed Moruca of Region one the male football title while Paiwomak Warriors of Region nine emerged winners in the female category when the 2019 National Heritage games concluded on Sunday night at the Everest Cricket Club ground.

A large and colourful crowd which included the Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, Sydney Allicock, Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples Affairs, Valarie Garrido Lowe and President of the Guyana Football Federation, Wayne Forde witnessed some exciting action as the first half in the male final between Moruca and Kako Cobra Sports Club of Region seven went goalless.

Both teams shared possession almost equally and created a number of chances but failed to finish as their defence stood firm.

However, a goalkeeping blunder handed Moruca the lead 10 minutes into the second half, and this proved to be the deciding factor in a game that was keenly contested.

Kako Cobra SC goalkeeper Danley Roland failed to gather the ball cleanly which was lobbed over the defence and Rodrigues capitalised nicely to give his team a well-deserved lead.

Earlier, Paiwomak Warriors of Region nine came from one goal down to beat Kamarang of Region seven 2-1 in the female final.

The first half failed to produce any goals, but Kamarang took the lead in the 50th minute when Zulika McNaughton found the back of the net from inside the area following a smart move which started from mid-field.

Kamarang continued to push forward, but Paiwomak Warriors kept up with the pace and Jacklyn Williams drew them level in the 70th minute with a

free kick from just outside the area.

Five minutes later Satiaka Sam handed Paiwomak Warriors the lead when she slotted home from inside the box following a build-up.

Kamarang pressed forward in search of an equaliser, but Paiwomak Warriors defended well to give their fans much to cheer about.

Bartica defeated Mainstay A of Region two 15-17, 15-7, 15-10 to win the male volleyball final. Barticas Breyon Burnett was named the most valuable player.

Bartica beat Region nine 151, 15-5, while Mainstay A defeated Sparton of Region one 15-3, 12-15, 17-15 in the semi finals.

Moruca added another

title to their collection with victory in the female volleyball. They defeated Kanaima of Region four 15-9, 15-5.

Morucas Annalisa Vincent was named the most valuable player. Moruca overcame Orella Siparuta of Region six 15-8, 15-5, while Kanaima beat Pakuri Warriors of Region four 15-10, 15-9 in the semi finals.

Marisha Melville of Region four won the female Archery 12 and under event ahead of Aliya Melville of Region seven and Angalie Adams of Region four.

The male division was taken by Raveeo Kanhai of Region two; Robeno Kanhai of Region two placed second and Stephon Pearson of Region three finished third.

The 13-17 male title was won by George McLee, while Bert Paul took the runner up spot. Sara Fredericks of Region two claimed the female 13-17 title ahead of Serena Clenkian and Beyonce Dundas in that order.

Ausilda Paulin took the

top podium spot in the senior female category, while Russel Dundas placed second and Bernette Gordon third. The senior male title was taken by Alex Pearson while Jude Edwin grabbed second and Aubrey De Souza third.

Santos and GFC register wins on Sunday

Five teams have secured their places in the in knockout round of the fourth annual limacol football tourney.

eorgetown Football Club (GFC) that lost both their previous group round-robin matches in the ongo ing fourth annual Limacol Football tourney were giving an easy three points on Sunday night when their opponents, Northern Rangers gifted them a walkover victory. Rangers were present for the clash but according the organisers, the team were unable to take to the field due to an issue pertaining to their gear. With the win, GFC were handed a 3-0 victory.

Playing at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue, the feature clash of the night saw Santos

pull off a come from behind victory to edge out Camptown 21. Kayci Robertson put Camptown ahead in the 18th minute but second half goals from Rondel Peters in the 51st and Brandon Solomon, who netted just five minutes before stoppage time, were the heroes for the Santos.

The tournament continued last evening with another double header, in the feature match Dynamic football club clashed with Mahaica Determinators in the feature clash at 21:00hrs, while Pele FC and Police B opened the action at 19:00hrs.

Two of Guyanas Masters athletes, Frank Tucker and Naranjan Singh followed up on their colleagues sterling performances when they too added their bit to shine individually and to ensure that Guyana ended third Overall at the PanAmerican/South American Powerlifting (FESUPO) and Bench Press Equipped and Classic Championships which ended in Uruguay on Sunday.

Competing in the Masters 3 class, Frank Tucker raked in Eight (8) Gold medals - (2 Squat 2 Bench Press 2 Deadlift 2 Overall) along with Four (4) Silver medals (1 Squat 1 Bench Press 1 Deadlift 1 Overall).

Battling in the Masters 4 category, USA based Naranjan Singh coped Sixteen (16) medals 7 Gold (2 Squat 2 Bench Press 1 Deadlift 2 Overall); Four (4) Silver medals (1 Squat 1 Bench Press 1 Deadlift 1 Overall); Four (4) Bronze medals (1 Squat 1 Bench Press 1 Deadlift 1 Overall).

Team accolades: Guyana placed 3rd overall, was 2nd in Open competition and 3rd in the Masters category.

The team was expected home yesterday afternoon.

Wales open Rugby World Cup campaign with six-try win over Georgia AFP - Six Nations champions Wales opened their Rugby World Cup campaign with a bonus-point 43-14 victory over Georgia in Toyota City yesterday.

The victory not only sent out a signal of intent to main Pool D rivals Australia, who beat Fiji in their opener, but also dispelled any doubts there might have been of a hangover in the Welsh camp over the sending-home of assistant coach Rob Howley amid allegations of illegal betting.

GFF participates in Concacaf Professional Football Development Workshop The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is participating in a two-day Concacaf Professional Football Development Workshop being held in Panama City, Panana from September 23 24, 2019.

GFF is being represented at the workshop by Club Licensing Manager and Acting General Secretary Ian Alves.

According to Concacaf, the workshop will serve “as a platform to provide Member Associations with comprehensive information on professional football matters.” Among them will be formal training on the new Club Licensing Model on COMET, Concacaf club competition updates, and best practices from around the world relative to infrastructure and stadium accessibility.

BCB launches Lets Bet Sports 100 Balls Tournament Foster praises Company for investment in Berbice Cricket The Berbice Cricket Board on Sunday last launched four different Lets Bet Sports Competitions across Berbice as it continues its 80th Anniversary Celebrations.

President Hilbert Foster along with Lets Bet Sports Brand Manager Ian De Barros and Brand Ambassador Rawle Toney launched the Tournaments at the Area H Ground before the start of the Rose Hall Town Bakewell and University of Guyana Elites Match.

Foster stated that the Berbice Cricket Board would be hosting four tournaments at the 100 Balls levels for teams in West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Upper Corentyne. Each Zone would produce its own Champion and then the four champions would then play another Tournament to decide the overall Berbice 100 Balls Champion.

The Berbice Cricket Board boss hailed the $1M investment by Lets Bet Sports Company as a blessing for the Ancient County and committed the Berbice Board to organising five highly successful tournaments.

With the Lets Bet Sports flags flying high in the background, Brand Ambassador Rawle Toney expressed delight at the start of the tournaments after a long delay due to the rainy season.

Tallawahs stun Tridents in thriller CPL - Jamaica Tallawahs picked up just their second win of the 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after successfully defending 127 all out to stun Barbados Tridents by five runs in a thriller at the Kensington Oval last evening.

There appeared little hope for the Tallawahs after a largely disappointing effort with the bat, but the Tridents found themselves behind the required rate at the halfway stage and, as the pressure grew, the wickets started to fall. Shamar Springer took 3/ 32 and Imran Khan 3/19 as the Tallawahs kept their slim Hero CPL playoff hopes alive with

an unlikely win.

Alex Hales got the runchase off to a positive start with a pair of Hero Maximums in the third over but fell to Zahir Khan soon after, smartly caught by Jade Dernbach diving to his right at squareleg. They were the only sixes the Tridents hit until the 19th over as their batting fell away in the face of tight Tallawahs bowling.

Justin Greaves and JP Duminy fell in quick succession to Imran Khan and Dwayne Smith while Jonathan Carter (17) and Johnson Charles (31) did likewise to Springer after their partnership had got appeared

to get things back on course.

At 78/5 the game was right back in the balance, and Tridents captain Jason Holder couldnt tilt it back in his sides favour as a slogsweep off Imran Khan went straight up in the air to be caught by keeper Glenn Phillips.

Springer bounced out Ashley Nurse before Roshon Primus ran past one from Imran Khan to be comprehensively stumped as the Tridents found themselves 90/8 and staring down the barrel.

There was still time for another twist, Raymon Reifer smashing 26 from just 12 balls with two fours and two sixes

There was a partnership of sorts between Springer and Ramaal Lewis before the former skied Tridents new boy Harry Gurney to cover.

His first Tridents wicket was deserved reward for an inventive and economical spell.

A brief but heavy rain shower forced a delay late in the innings, and Lewis came out a man possessed for what would prove a vital final nine deliveries of the Ta l l a w a h s i n n i n g s . H e bludgeoned two huge sixes down the ground off Reifer before carving over extracover for four more.

He fell caught behind to the penultimate ball of the innings for a crucial 27, and Zahir Khan was run out attempting a second run from the last to leave the Ta l l a w a h s 1 2 7 a l l o u t .

Against the odds, it would prove just enough.

Today, action in the tournament continues with the St Lucia Zouks facing the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground from 06:00pm.

Tomorrow St Lucia Zouks will battle top of the table Guyana Amazon Warriors again at the Daren Sammy Cricket G r o u n d f r o m 06:00pm in what should be another good game with the Warriors looking to maintain their top billing even though they have already qualified for the playoffs.

Not in My House Boxing postponed to Nov 23 Siparuta ladies added to Card The historic “Not in My House” boxing card set for September 28 at Durban Park featuring Guyanas Dexter Marques and Columbian Jose Antonio Jimenez has been pushed back to November 23.

Caribbean Bantamweight Champion Keevin Allicock is scheduled to match gloves with Trinidadian Anthony Joseph to headline the Amateur bouts.

Durban Park was set to join six other venues in Guyana to stage Professional Boxing but according to the Promoters they were faced with last minute issues that would have affected the quality of the event.

“We opted to move the date rather than allow the challenges to dampen the event. All tickets that were issued will still be valid,” stated Rudy Ramalingum, speaking on behalf of the promotions team.

GBBC President Peter Abdool expressed regret but said the delay would give the boxers and promoters additional time to prepare for a bigger spectacle.

President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle lamented that the GBA would have pushed back their Lennox Blackmore Intermediate Boxing Card to facilitate the hosting of this event.

“Previously our Intermediate Card was held on September 27, 28 & 29 but just not to compete with the Professional Card we would have pushed it back to the first week in October,” Ninvalle noted.

The GBA Head said that his Association, more than anybody else, knows just how tricky and arduous the promoting of Boxing is.

“Its not an easy task so we can

understand what Mr Hussain and his people are going through because we do this on a regular basis. We (GBA) do this at least five times per year and when we have International Cards we do it seven times,” Ninvalle continued.

“So we know exactly how hard it is...how hard it is to get sponsors to come on board and we do hope that the organisers can get everything in line for the new date. Our heart goes out to them since we know how hard this is to promote an event like this,” Ninvalle concluded.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Pearline Lochan and Sharon Ward, who hail from region six, up the Corentyne River in a Village called

Siparuta, have been added to the Professional Card.

Lochan will be making her Professional debut while Ward is no stranger to the sport.

Lochan is presently training at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym under the watchful eyes of Hinterland Boxing Coach Orlon Pocket Rocket Rogers in the Mining Town of Linden and Ward is under the guidance of Coach Floyd Grant.

Ward started boxing at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym back in 2002 with Rogers as her coach and a year after she moved to Grant.

Lochan began Boxing in June of this year when Rogers was sent to Siparuta by Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr

George Norton to commence work as Hinterland Boxing Coach.

“I love Boxing but there wasnt any Boxing Coach so I started playing Football but now I have gotten the opportunity and I plan to make full use of it,” Lochan said.She intends to show the (Continued on page 26)
