Islamic State closes in on Syrian town, refugees flood into Turkey SURUC Turkey/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Islamic State militants tightened their noose on a northern Syrian border town yesterday as the United Nations said the number of Syrian Kurds fleeing into neighbouring Turkey may have topped 100,000 and was likely to go much higher. Residents fleeing the frontier town of Ayn al-Arab, known in Kurdish as Kobani, and its surrounding villages said the militants were executing people of all ages in the areas they had seized to create a climate of fear and slavish obedience. Kurdish politicians in Turkey renewed their appeal to young people in the country’s mainly Kurdish southeast to head to Kobani to help their ethnic kin push back Islamic State, which has
seized swathes of Iraq and Syria in recent months and proclaimed a caliphate in the heart of the Middle East. “ISIL (Islamic State) are continuing to advance. Every place they pass through they kill, wound and kidnap people. Many people are missing and we believe they were kidnapped,” Welat Avar, a doctor, told Reuters by telephone from Kobani. “We now urgently need medicines and equipment for operations. We have many casualties ... ISIL killed many people in the villages. They cut off the heads of two people, I saw it with my own eyes,” he said. A Kurdish politician from Turkey who visited Kobani on Saturday gave a similar account of the Sunni militants’ tactics. “Rather than a war this is
a genocide operation ... They are going into the villages and cutting off the heads of one or two people and showing them to the villagers,” Ibrahim Binici, a deputy from Turkey’s proKurdish HDP party, told Reuters. “It is truly a shameful situation for humanity,” he said, calling for international intervention. Some Syrian Kurds compared their plight to the Yazidi minority in Iraq, which came under attack from Islamic State earlier this year. Tens of thousands of Yazidis were forced to flee their homeland of Sinjar and other villages. The United States has carried out airstrikes against Islamic State in Iraq and has said it is prepared to extend them into Syria, but it is not clear when or where this could
Moscow marchers condemn Kremlin role in Ukraine war
People carry Russian and Ukrainian national flags during anti-war rally in Moscow, Russia yesterday. (Rusia) EFE/EPA/YURI KOCHETKOV Moscow (AFP) Thousands of Russians yesterday marched through Moscow to protest against the Kremlin’s involvement in the Ukraine crisis, in the country’s first major anti-war rally since fighting erupted in April. A huge column of protesters moved through the heart of the capital to condemn Moscow’s role in a conflict that has claimed nearly 3,000 lives and pitted Russians against Ukrainians. The two-hour march — one of the largest since President Vladimir Putin returned to the presidency for a third term in 2012 — was a riot of colour with scores of anti-Kremlin slogans, music, drum beats and chants. Some carried blue and yellow Ukrainian flags and chanted “Peace to Ukraine, freedom to Russia, jail for Putin” as the strains of John Lennon’s “All You Need Is Love” wafted through the crowds. Armed with placards saying “Forgive us, Ukraine” and “Putin, stop lying”, many
participants said the Russian president should pull troops out of Ukraine and stop meddling in the affairs of the fellow Slavic country. The rally, dubbed “The Peace March”, came amid a Russian media blackout on the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine. Kiev and the West say the Kremlin has sent in regular troops to prop up proMoscow separatists fighting against Kiev. Moscow has denied the claim. Many protesters condemned the deployment of troops and the secret funerals of soldiers. The rally brought together young and old, ordinary and prominent Russians, die-hard activists and political novices. Moscow police, which tend to downplay the popularity of opposition rallies, said nearly 5,000 had turned up. They said that supporters of eastern Ukraine’s selfproclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic were among the crowd.
Protesters said the turnout had beaten exceptions. Some chanted slogans of Ukraine’s uprising, which ousted a Kremlin-backed president in February, such as “Out with the gang” and “Glory to Ukraine”. The march — which started from the Pushkin Square and ended on Sakharov Avenue, site of major opposition demonstrations in 2011-2012, revived many of anti-Kremlin chants like “Putin is a thief.” One of the organisers, Sergei Davidis, said it was difficult to provide precise figures but that up to 40,000 might have turned out. Moscow authorities had given permission for up to 50,000 to march through the city centre. Some 1,000 people also turned up for an unsanctioned rally in Russia’s second city of Saint Petersburg, an AFP correspondent reported. Protesters at the march said the war in Ukraine should be stopped at all costs.
Syrian Kurds walk after crossing into Turkey at the Turkish-Syrian border, near the southeastern town of Suruc in Sanliurfa province Saturday. REUTERS/Stringer take place. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said yesterday that other countries were willing to join Washington in launching air strikes in Syria against Islamic State militants. “We will not do the air strikes alone,” she told CBS’ “Face the Nation”. “But we’re going to leave it to other nations to announce for themselves what their specific commitments to the coalition are going to be.”
Among the tens of thousands crossing the border into Turkey yesterday was Muhammet Abbas, a 40year-old teacher who wore a blue cap as protection against the blazing sun. He led a group of about 20 people including his wife and six children. “Everybody is scared ... Where is humanity? Where is the world? They are killing us and nobody cares.” Turkey has said an estimated 70,000 Syrian Kurds have crossed the
border since Friday, but the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said that figure may be too conservative. “I don’t think in the last three and a half years we have seen 100,000 cross in two days. So this is a bit of a measure of how this situation is unfolding and the very deep fear people have about the circumstances inside Syria, and for that matter Iraq,” said Carol Batchelor, the UNHCR representative in Turkey.

A monster is on the loose and it is coming your way! In order to muzzle Kaieteur News, this newspaper and its publisher have come under sustained attack, not just now, but for years. Where is the decency in our society when in light of these insidious attacks on this newspaper, civil society and the religious community remain silent on what has been taking place in this country? Where is the professionalism that is expected of government functionaries when they allow themselves to be manipulated by their political functionaries? What more does civil society need before it takes a
stand on the attacks on this newspaper? Has it not yet seen through the danger that is besetting this country? What more does it need to see? Does civil society believe that it is mere coincidence that no sooner did this newspaper publish certain revelations that enquiries were made at the bank with which the editor does business transactions? Is that a coincidence? Does it believe that this is a mere political tit- for tat? Does it not see the far from invisible economic hands that are at work here? Was it a coincidence that just about the same time that there was a plan to build a brewery at Skeldon that a
decision was taken that could have placed in jeopardy the ability of Demerara Distilleries Limited to secure molasses, a raw material needed to make liquor? I leave it up to you to decide. Was it also a coincidence that no sooner had DDL resisted, through the Courts, the threats to its future access to molasses, its top official, Dr. Yesu Persaud was dressed down in public by a senior government functionary? Was that a coincidence? I leave it up to you to decide. When advertisements were withdrawn from the Stabroek News there was a pronouncement that ads would be based on
Dental technician kills girlfriend, surrenders A 29 year-old dental technician stabbed his 23year-old girlfriend to death in a fit of jealous rage in the couple’s Hague, West Coast Demerara home at around 10.00hrs yesterday. The suspect, who turned himself over to the police, reportedly attacked his girlfriend, 23 year-old Rajkumarie Persaud called “Ashtie”, after accusing her of being unfaithful. Kaieteur News understands that an aunt of Persaud’s heard screams and upon investigating, she saw her niece lying in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she died before receiving medical attention. The suspect managed to flee the scene to his employer’s house in Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara. He was detained at Providence Station after being taken there by his employer. A source said that the suspect had indicated that he would have committed suicide but was persuaded to surrender. Kaieteur News was told that the couple started dating just under a year ago after both suspect and victim had separated from their spouses. This newspaper was told that for weeks now, the suspect known as “Amit” had complained to relatives that the two were “having problems”. The woman’s stepfather, Swami Sookrum, told Kaieteur News that he had planned to counsel the couple yesterday after he returned from church. Sookrum said that he left his Hague, WCD home yesterday morning leaving the suspect in a hammock and the woman inside of her apartment. Persaud had lived in the
circulation. The government in fact went regionally to defend its decision to withhold ads from that newspaper. But no sooner was the Guyana Times launched that this policy was reversed seemingly with the intention of ensuring that all newspapers would now attract ads regardless of circulation. This qualified the Guyana Times for advertisements. Was this change in policy a coincidence? I leave it to you to decide. I also leave it to you to decide that not long after men in a vehicle belonging to a government ministry were seen photographing this newspaper’s office that a new wave of attacks were launched against this newspaper. Is this a coincidence? If civil society believes that it is a coincidence it should remain silent. But if it
feels that the actions are connected then it should raise its voice like a thunderstorm. The National Assembly is about to reconvene. One of the main items of the agenda is the no-confidence motion against the government. The Speaker of the National Assembly has ruled that the motion meets the requirements for it to be placed on the Order Paper and that he would allow a debate on this motion. Is it coincidental that suddenly someone has emerged making an allegation of sexual misconduct against the said Speaker? Do you think that this is coincidental? I leave it up to you. I will leave a great many other things to you the readers to decide. But I will say this, if you the readers and civil society continue to remain silent in the face of what is taking place in this country and particularly against this newspaper, then
today it is Kaieteur News and tomorrow it will be you. There can be no self- interest served in being silent in the face of the victimization and vindictiveness that is taking place in our society. There is monster out there that wants to dominate the totality of the economic space in Guyana. They are spreading their tentacles far and wide. Right now they are being selective. But their appetite is open-ended and when they are finished devouring the main sectors of business in Guyana, they will come in search of your little neck. They can be prevented if decent people speak out. They can be thwarted if professionals refuse to do their ill deeds.

Dem Bees got obsession
DEAD: Rajkumarie Persaud called “Ashtie” lower flat of a house she shared with her mother and stepfather. “I left him (the suspect) there at the house…you know he came to beg her for another chance and I say that I would counsel them when I came back from church,” Sookrum told Kaieteur News. Sookrum said that while he was out, he received a message that “Amit” had
stabbed Persaud. Back in July, a construction worker allegedly killed his wife of six years. Candy Rawlins was found dead in her Crane, WCD home. Police are still trying to locate the suspect, Vidol Anthony Rawlins. The police had found the nude body of the woman and a confession letter signed by her husband next to her.

EZjet boss to be sentenced in November for fraud, embezzlement Embattled Guyanese businessman, Sonny Ramdeo, who is currently remanded in a Florida jail, is set to be sentenced on November 14. But he is still attempting to defend his innocence and has since filed a motion to have a US judge grant him access to the evidence to be used against him by the US prosecutors. Ramdeo recently filed a motion to the court claiming that the US prosecutors have been withholding evidence from him. He further claims that none of his previous attorneys ever had a chance to peruse the evidence against him. Ramdeo is further alleging that some of the evidence include computers and other devices that were seized without a warrant following his arrest. He is adamant that the evidence he seeks will address numerous issues at his sentencing and has since petitioned the court to direct

EZjet Boss, Sonny Ramdeo the US Government, through its prosecutors, to allow him to inspect, “examine, copy and print materials beneficial to him for sentencing purposes.” He noted too that his most recent defence lawyer, prior to the termination of his services had shared case information
with the prosecution regarding the possible disposition of the charges pending a plea agreement. Ramdeo is also contesting several pieces of evidence the US prosecutors intend to use against him at sentencing. Last month Ramdeo, sacked another defence lawyer and has since opted to defend himself as the case winds up. Ramdeo, who was behind the failed low cost carrier EZjet, was charged in the US with embezzling millions from the hospital chain he had been employed at. Ramdeo at the time argued that the reason for his decision was based on the “narrow scope of representation” which he tells the court will not move the litigation further “based on facts surrounding the totality of the circumstances of the matter.”
Minibus attacked at Agricola…
Female passenger shot Minutes before celebrating her 25th birthday, Lashawana Chung of 18th Street, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was last evening shot and robbed while being a passenger in a minibus that was heading to Georgetown. The incident occurred shortly after 22. 15 hrs after two young bandits, posing as passengers, attacked a minibus in the vicinity of Agricola. According to reports, Chung and other passengers had joined the minibus and were heading to Georgetown when someone hailed the minibus in the vicinity of Agricola. Eyewitnesses recounted that it was at this point that a passenger in the back seat informed another youth, who was in the third seat of the minibus, to begin collecting everything of value from the other passengers. Those who attempted to escape were abruptly accosted by the third man who had hailed the bus to stop.
Eyewitnesses recalled that the bandit who was in the third seat, pulled out a small handgun and began to hit Chung at the back of her head, while demanding that she hand over her cellular phone and bag. The man who was at the door reportedly fired a shot at Chung. She was hit to the upper left thigh. The bandits reportedly robbed other passengers before escaping. Sources identified one of the victims as Sophia Gobin, 25, of Middle Road, La Penitence. She was relieved of a mobile phone and a handbag containing cash and other valuables. At least one of the bandits was described to be a dark in complexion individual with “cocked teeth.” The injured woman was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where she was treated. Police reportedly impounded the bus at the Brickdam Police Station.
Trislander damaged after difficult landing at Kaieteur A Trislander
One of the newly operating Trislanders in the country suffered some degree of damage as the aircraft came in for a difficult landing at Kaieteur Falls yesterday afternoon. The three-engine aircraft which was transporting some 16 passengers was unable to make the returning flight to the Ogle International Airport (OIA) given the extent of its damage. The aircraft, which belongs to Golden Arrow Airways, was conducting tour flights
to Kaieteur Falls when it encountered difficulty. The flight left OIA just after 13.00 hrs yesterday and arrived at Kaieteur Falls about an hour later. A team of investigators from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) was dispatched to the location following the incident. There were no reported injuries and passengers were returned to the city in an alternate aircraft.
According to Ramdeo, he is left with “no choice” but to represent himself to prevent a miscarriage of justice.” He has repeatedly changed attorneys, some of which were provided by the State to represent him. He has also pleaded not guilty, changed that to guilty and attempted to change it back to not guilty. Ramdeo was also recently found guilty of obstruction of justice when he had attempted to change his guilty plea to that of not guilty. Ramdeo’s troubles were escalated further as he was put on notice that at sentencing he should be prepared to address the questions of whether his advisory guideline sentencing range should be increased for obstruction of justice based upon false testimony he presented. Ramdeo was found to have lied to the court about representation provided to him by court appointed lawyers. Ramdeo has pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud and money laundering, admitting that he
stole between US$20M-$50M and using a number of bank transactions, passed the monies through the accounts of EZjet, a low-cost charter that he started up in 2011 and which folded last December, following his arrest in Brooklyn by US federal agents. According to court documents seen by Kaieteur News, Ramdeo was hired in 2005 by Promise Healthcare Inc., and Success Healthcare Inc., two sister companies that manage hospitals in a number of US states, to work along with its payroll tax systems. After the contract for the independent company which handled the tax payments for the companies was terminated, Ramdeo informed his employers that he knew a firm that could do the job. What he did not tell them was that Payserv Tax Inc. was a company he created, and in which he had ownership interest. Investigators found that the original address of Payserv was Ramdeo’s home in Florida. As a result, Promise Healthcare Inc. transferred
millions to Payserv. While employed at Promise, Ramdeo also created and started EZjet GT Inc., a chartered air service providing flights to passengers from New York to Georgetown, Guyana. He also added flights to Toronto. Ramdeo admitted that he did not seek permission when he transferred millions from Payserv to EZjet. None of the money he collected from his employers to pay taxes ever ended up with the Inland tax agency of the US. Only Ramdeo had control of the bank accounts. He used some of the money to finance the operations of the airline. When questions were raised during an audit of Promise Healthcare, Ramdeo created an email account and sent messages to himself showing that the monies from his employers were paid over. With the net closing in around him, Ramdeo emptied his Florida home of its furniture and disappeared. Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), tracking his calls, arrested him in a basement apartment in Brooklyn, New York. The apartment was disguised to look like a storeroom.
Residents seek remedy for cows on Port Kaituma airstrip Cows grazing on the Port Kaituma airstrip
Residents of Port Kaituma, Region one are lamenting the state of the roadways in their community and the haphazard way the area’s airstrip is being cleaned and maintained as cattle stroll and roam the area unhindered. The residents who spoke to Kaieteur News told the publication that proper care is not being taken of the community roads, neither the airstrip, since the person tasked with the job is shortchanging the work. The residents claim that cows roam the airstrip at will, thereby presenting a hazard to pilots attempting to land. “Pilots will always have problems with cows being on the runway when they are ready to land the plane,” one resident said. The resident alleged that the person contracted to clean the airstrip area holds
important positions in the community. “The person who gets the contract to weed the surrounding of the airstrip is only weeding one rod on both sides of the tarmac when the entire place used to be cleaned by the person who last had the contract,” the resident alleged. He claimed that the community’s named Interim Management Committee (IMC) chairman or her husband usually clear the area. The IMC chairman is also the chairman of the Port Kaituma Power and Light. Residents have stated also that the IMC chairman is not paying much attention to the extremely poor roads in the community. They are seeking the intervention of the government into the matter. The poor maintenance of the airstrip is also a matter
of concern. Earlier in the year, a Cessna 206 which is owned and operated by the Air Services Limited (ASL) Company plunged into a barbed wire fence on the Paramakatoi airstrip after veering off the runway. It was alleged that cows were in the vicinity of the airstrip and contributed to poor safety at the location. Civil aviation authorities claimed however, that cows were not on the airstrip and ASL explained the misinformation. The GCAA had noted that Advisory Circular on Standard Operating Procedures at Uncontrolled Aerodromes was issued to the industry in September, 2013 and describes actions to be taken by pilots to ensure that proper assessment of conditions at the airstrip is made before landing.

It didn’t matter that the Vigilance Police Station was just a few doors away; some brazen bandits staged a daring mid morning attack on an East Coast Demerara businessman yesterday, carting off an undisclosed amount of cash, gold jewellery and his licenced firearm. The attack which appeared to be well organized, was so swift that by the time the police were alerted, the bandits had already disappeared in their grey Toyota Premio motorcar. It was the second time that the businessman Vinood Hitlall, who operates the Vinood Lumber Yard and Pawn Shop at Lot 10 Vigilance Public Road, was the target of bandits within the past two years. His wife, Sahodra told Kaieteur News that her husband was sitting in his car outside the premises when the bandits struck around 09:15 hours. She explained that her husband had left home earlier to conduct business with some of his associates and had returned home for a beverage when the attack occurred. According to the woman, her husband’s driver left him in the car and came into the yard to collect the beverages from the shop the couple also operates at their home. Sahodra Hitlall related that she was in her yard when she saw two men approach her husband in the car and

distance to the Vigilance Police Station where they reported the matter. “Same time de police coming out and he (Bossman) jump in de police vehicle and go after dem. Dey drive up to Melanie but dem men done gone,” the driver explained. Sahodra Hitalll is convinced that the bandits were monitoring her husband’s movements over a period of time since the attack was carried out with trained precision. She also found it hard to understand how the bandits could have been so brazen to carry out the day time attack, knowing that the Vigilance Police Station was just a stone’s throw away. “You just not safe in dis place no matter where you live,” she said.

thing that the AFC will be putting out soon and noted that the Party is willing to “embark upon this even before any talk of national elections.” This Hughes said as he highlighted the lack of educational development in Region Nine. He reminded the students about the ‘Three R’s— reading, writing and arithmetic’
and even included a fourth ‘R’, “we need to become competent in the fourth ‘R’— Computer— so we have to learn how to use a computer.” Hinds expressed how pleased he is to be able, “from a small fund that they give the Prime Minister, to put aside some money and get this computer set for you.” Prime Minister Hinds and the other officials then handed over the equipment to the school’s headteacher. The computer and printer would also be used to manage the school’s records.
ing the last Secondary School Entrance Exam (SSEE). Hughes told the media that all other students from the village go to advanced primary. In late October, AFC launched its campaign for General Elections in Region Nine; visiting at least four villages in the Region. Hughes, during the campaign, highlighted the fact that the students who sat Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams in that Region this year, also performed poorly. However, the attorney-at law, declared that “it is no fault of your children. It cannot be that the children in Georgetown and Essequibo are smarter than those in Region Nine. It has to be that the human resources are not coming here.” Hughes was equipped with an official Ministry of Education release of the CSEC results for the three secondary schools in Region Nine; Annai Secondary , Aishalton Secondary and St. Ignatius Secondary.
Annai and Aishalton Secondary Schools recorded a 25 percent pass rate. This means that, in two of the three schools in Region Nine, three out of four students are failing. St. Ignatius barely scraped a 50 percent pass rate which means that one out of every two children who wrote CSEC at that school failed. As Hughes addressed different gatherings in Region Nine, at villages such as Baitoon and Maruranau, he made it a point to note that the buildings housing the schools are “fine and dandy, but the results are not…So we have new buildings in which we are training our young people to fail.” “Imagine 75 percent of the students failed. This is unacceptable. You guys cannot sit back and allow this,” said the AFC chairman. Hughes told parents that if the AFC is to get into government, in addition to ensuring the existing schools get trained teachers, the Party will ensure that Region Nine gets a technical school.

Government advised to seek write-off for slavery Jamaica Gleaner - The National Reparation Commission wants the Government to consider seeking a debt write-off from countries which benefited from the trans-atlantic slave trade. In its report, which was tabled in the House of Representatives last Wednesday, the commission called on the Government to “provide a list of the national debt so that negotiations can be initiated under the umbrella of reparations to write off the present debt owed by our country as debtfor-equity swap by the nations identified”. The report of the commission, which was chaired by Professor Verene Shepherd, further said the debt write-off is an important development strategy and one that is geared towards achieving sustainable development. Jamaica’s stock of public debt is expected to increase to $2.09 trillion this fiscal year. The debt stock is estimated to be 132 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP). As part of the reparation strategy which is being proposed, the commission suggested that the Government negotiates with Spain and the United
Professor Verene Shepherd Kingdom for compensation for historic injustices and discuss with them the strategies needed for, among other things, the return of the money which was paid to the owners of enslaved Africans in return for emancipation. Using the calculations of economic historian David Richardson, it is estimated that the total monetary reparations owed by Britain to its former colonies is £7.5 trillion. “Jamaica, being the largest and most profitable of its colonies, accounted for 30.64 per cent, or an estimated £2.2 trillion,” the report said. The commission noted that more than 10 million Africans were taken from their homes and forcefully transported to the Caribbean as the enslaved chattel and
property of Europeans. “The transatlantic slave trade is the largest forced migration in human history and has no parallel in terms of man’s inhumanity to man,” the report said. It added: “This trade in enchained bodies was a highly successful commercial business for the nations of Europe. The lives of millions of men, women and children were destroyed in search for profits.” The commission, in pushing the need for debt cancellation, said Caribbean governments that emerged from slavery and colonialism have inherited the massive crisis of community poverty and institutional unpreparedness for development. “These governments still daily engage in the business of cleaning up the colonial mess in order to prepare for development. The pressure of development has driven governments to carry the burden of public employment and social privileges designed to confront colonial legacies. This process has resulted in states accumulating unsustainable levels of public debt that now constitute their fiscal entrapment,” the report said.
Argentine President said received Islamic State threats ROME (Reuters) Argentine President Cristina Fernandez said during a trip to the Vatican on Saturday she had received threats by the Islamic State due to her friendship with compatriot Pope Francis and for recognizing both Israel and Palestine. Fernandez said the Security Ministry and intelligence services were now dealing with the threat by Islamic State, a Sunni Muslim extremist group which has exploited the chaos of Syria and Iraq to seize swathes of territory in both countries. “The complaint made by two police officers was because Islamic State threats had appeared against me,” Fernandez told reporters at Rome’s Ciampino airport after meeting Francis for lunch. She dismissed the threats, saying if she focused on such menaces she “would have to live under the bed”. Islamic State fighters have declared war on the West and seek to establish a
caliphate in the heart of the Middle East. Last month the pope, who has often condemned the concept of war in God’s name, said it would be legitimate for the international community to use force to stop “unjust aggression” by Islamic State militants who have killed or displaced thousands of people in Iraq and Syria, many of them Christians. Fernandez and Francis, who have met several times since his election as pope, had tense relations when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires. But Fernandez posted a photograph on Facebook on Saturday of herself with the pope in front of a picture of Argentina’s fondlyremembered late first lady Eva Peron. “We discussed (with the
Cristina Fernandez pope) the fact ... we defend things that upset some people,” said Fernandez. Fernandez and Francis also talked about the global financial system and Argentina’s economy over lunch.

Penal/Debe Chamber wants highway, tells Kublalsingh: End hunger strike Trinidad Guardian - The Penal/Debe Chamber of Commerce executive is calling on environmental activist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh to end his hunger strike. The executive made the call as it took issue with the headline of an article in the Trinidad Express Saturday which stated that the Penal/Debe Chamber was backing Kublalsingh. Members held an emergency meeting at Roopnarine Department Store in Penal, Saturday. Speaking with the media afterwards, former president Lincoln Ragbirsingh said the headline was misleading. “We revoke the headline of the article published today (yesterday). Our president supports the highway,” he said. He said the executive supports the highway and was not in support of Kublalsingh’s hunger strike. Kublalsingh, leader of the Highway Re-route Movement, began his hunger strike on Wednesday in front of the Prime Minister’s office in an attempt to get the Government to stop work on the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extention to Point Fortin, and honour the
Former president of the Penal/Debe Chamber of Commerce Lincoln Ragbirsingh, right, holds a copy of the Trinidad Express newspaper. He complained about their headline being misleading. At left is businessman Ashmir Mohammed. Photo: Kristian De Silva James Armstrong report. “We do not support a hunger strike. The development of a country is better than the development of a handful of people,” Ragbirsingh said. “I don’t see it (hunger strike) being necessary. Stop that (hunger strike) and let’s work together to see the end of the highway. The faster we get it done, the better it is for everybody.” He said the highway will also reduce traffic congestion which
affects everyone, including school children. Ragbirsingh said the highway will bring further development to Penal/ Debe and encourage local marketing. Other chamber members present during the press conference were Shiva Roopnarine, Seunarine Moonilal, Fyzool Hosein, businessmen Indar Jairaj and Ashmir Mohammed. Chamber president Sahid Hosein was not present.

U.S. military struggles to preserve options in Islamic State fight (Reuters) - As America re-engages with Iraq and deepens its involvement in the region’s web of sectarian conflicts, the Pentagon has made a practical assessment of the brutal job of stabilising Baghdad: in the future, U.S. forces may be needed on the front lines. President Barack Obama has ruled out a combat mission, but military officials and former officials say the reality of a protracted campaign in Iraq and possibly Syria may ultimately require greater use of U.S. troops, including tactical air strike spotters or front-line advisers embedded with Iraq forces. That raises questions over how far Obama can go in the expanding U.S. military power without appearing to violate promises not to drag America into another ground war and highlights different priorities between the White House and Pentagon at the start of what looks to be a long, unpredictable military campaign in Iraq and Syria. From a military perspective, officials say it makes sense to at least have
the option of deploying small numbers of U.S. military advisers alongside Iraqis on the front, time-to-time, even if that appears to contradict Obama’s stated policy. The White House, meanwhile, is keen to signal to U.S. voters that the president who campaigned on ending the war in Iraq will keep this a sharply limited campaign. Obama has ordered 1,600 soldiers to Iraq since Islamic State fighters swept into the country in June but is seeking to avoid mission creep as he cobbles together an international coalition to “degrade and destroy” the jihadists who want to form of a caliphate in the heart of the Middle East. American spotters in Iraq, used sparingly, could help avoid civilian casualties as American air strikes pound militants who increasingly might try to hide among innocent Iraqis. “There’s some reports out there that they’re already using children and other things to start shielding themselves, because they know that will protect them
from air strikes,” General Raymond Odierno, chief of staff of the Army, said on Friday. Odierno says he supports Obama’s strategy in Iraq and says properly trained Iraqis can carry out the job. But he also won’t rule any options out. That is a traditional refrain in military circles, one that was made more bluntly by retired General James Mattis, who oversaw American troops in the Middle East until last year. “You just don’t take anything off the table, up front, which apparently the administration has tried to do,” Mattis told a hearing held by the House Intelligence Committee on Sept. 18. “We have the most skillful, the fiercest and certainly the most ethical ground forces in the world and I don’t think we should reassure the enemy in advance that they’ll never face them.” The top U.S. military officer, General Martin Dempsey, ignited the debate this week when he told lawmakers he might recommend sending U.S. troops to accompany Iraqi
President Barack Obama forces on the front lines of the fight against the hard-line militant group that has taken over much of Iraq and Syria. Dempsey also said Obama told him to come to him on a “case-by-case basis” as needed to request use of ground forces in the
battle against Islamic State. “If there are threats to the United States, then I, of course, would go back to the president and make a recommendation that may include the use of U.S. military ground forces,” Dempsey said. Already, military commanders have sought to take steps that test the limits of Obama’s willingness in Iraq. According to Dempsey, General Lloyd Austin, head of U.S. Central Command, recommended sending troops to help U.S. planes locate Islamic State targets near the Mosul dam, a strategic site in northern Iraq. But Obama chose to have U.S. advisors work remotely, officials said. Officials denied any rift between the two men’s vision for the evolving campaign against Islamic State, which
they say will include nations from Europe to the Middle East and Australia in an effort to undermine the group’s military power, its financing, and support from disaffected Sunni Muslims. U.S. officials say there is no discussion of sending U.S. ground forces to actually shoot at militants as they did during the previous Iraq war. Instead, Special Operations soldiers could accompany Iraqi forces as they battle Islamic State, to advise them or help guide air strikes. But current and former officials say the reality of a campaign inside Iraq and possibly Syria may ultimately require an expanded use of American troops, who are now mostly limited to an advisory role far from the battlefield. Critics say Obama may be painting himself in a corner, at least rhetorically.
Ghani named Afghan president-elect after deal to end election dispute
Afghan rival presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah (L) and Ashraf Ghani exchange signed agreements for the country’s unity government in Kabul yesterday. REUTERS/Omar Sobhani KABUL (Reuters) Former finance minister Ashraf Ghani was named Afghanistan’s president-elect yesterday after he signed a deal to share power with his opponent, ending months of turmoil over a disputed election that destabilized the nation as most foreign troops prepare to leave. The announcement withheld the final election numbers, apparently as part of the political deal between Ghani and rival Abdullah Abdullah, a former foreign minister who claimed the process was rigged against him. “The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan declares Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai as the president of Afghanistan,”
commission chief Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani said. The full results would be provided at a later date, Nuristani said, but did not say when. He acknowledged deep flaws in the June 14 runoff vote and said a U.N.supervised audit was not adequate to weed out all the vote-rigging. “Although the audit was comprehensive ... (it) could not detect or throw out fraud completely,” Nuristani said, without taking further questions. Under the terms of the unity government deal signed yesterday, Ghani will share power with a chief executive proposed by Abdullah. The two will share control over who leads key
institutions such as the Afghan army and other executive decisions. The new administration faces huge challenges in fighting an emboldened Taliban-led insurgency and paying its bills amid plummeting tax revenue. It will also face significant difficulty in improving the lives of Afghans who face hard times as aid flows fall and as contracts with the NATOled coalition dry up as most foreign troops leave by the end of the year. The accord signed yesterday was the finalization of a broader power-sharing structure brokered by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who swiftly welcomed its signing.

12th Annual Macedo Memorial 70-mile Road Race
Michael Anthony canters to victory in senior and junior categories By Franklin Wilson Junior Caribbean selectee Michael Anthony was again displaying pristine form yesterday when he rode to a commanding win in the 12th a n n u a l Vi c t o r M a d e c o memorial 70-mile cycle road race, which started in the city, proceeded to Long Creek on the Linden Soesdyke Highway before returning to the starting line for the finish. The Linden based cyclist outsprinted Elite Caribbean Championships selectee Hamza Eastman to win the event in Three Hours 14 Minutes 19 Seconds on a sunny Sunday morning. Paul De Nobrega, who was on a three man break with the duo, had to settle for the third place. Closing out the top eight positions overall were Robin Persaud, Alanzo Ambrose (Junior Caribbean selectee), Kravitz Jeffrey, Jamal John and Albert Philander in that order. Ambrose, Jeffrey and John took the second to fourth place in the junior category to Anthony, who also won two of the 12 primes that were up for grabs among the senior riders. Eastman and
De Nobrega also collected two each as did Raynauth Jeffrey and Marlon Williams. Persaud and Stephano Husbands had one each. Another Junior Caribbean selectee, Raphael Leung, won the Juvenile category which saw the riders turning back at Splashmin’s, Linden Soesdyke Highway. Leung stopped the clock at Two Hours 20 Minutes 06 Seconds; Romello Crawford and Jaleel Jackson placed second and third. Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson, father of Jaleel, won the veteran category ahead of Everal Mundy and Junior Niles, his winning time was Two Hours 19 Minutes 40 Seconds. Keon Thomas in a time of Two Hours 25 Minutes 02 Seconds, topped the field in the mountain bike category, Julio Melville and Deeraj Garbarran followed in that order. Yesterday’s event was organised by the Flying Stars Cycle Club and sponsored by the Macedo family. Guyana Cycling Federation President (GCF) Ms. Cheryl Thompson was on hand to share brief remarks at the presentation ceremony. While complimenting
the junior riders and organisers for a well ran event, Ms. Thompson took the senior riders who have been selected for the Elite Caribbean championships to task, venting her disappointment at their continued lack of commitment at being much more competitive. The President said that that GCF would like to see an immediate change in the modus operandi of the senior riders who should be setting a better example for the juniors and showing more regards for the committed fans of the sport, who come out at all
events to see competitive riding and not what is becoming a trend of the leading riders, arguing and watching each other rather than ride, become more strategic in outmaneuvering each other. Three of the four riders selected for the Elite Caribbean Championships set for Puerto Rico next month were seen smiling and gaffing as they approached the finish line yesterday, not bothered at all about getting in some much needed competitive time ahead of an important event.

Banks DIH Sevens Tournament
UG, Hornets crowned champions It ended in controversy, but after the officials checked and rechecked the University of Guyana Wolves were declared champions of the Banks DIH Sevens One-Day Tournament after escaping with a narrow 26-24 victory over Yamaha Caribs yesterday, at the National Park. Notorious for relinquishing leads, the academics rebounded from a 12-5 first half discrepancy to
defeat a game, but clearly over-confident Caribs unit, who seemed to relax thinking that the game was over despite some amount of time left in the contest. Tries by winger and tournament MVP, Ryan Dey (two), Philbert Joseph and Osei McKenzie, together with two conversions by Godfrey Broomes facilitated the immensely improved team in their win over the Caribs. McKenzie also chipped in with a conversion to earn the Wolves their first lien on the Banks Sevens championship. Akeem Fraser’s double, a try by Andrew Jarvis, Henry’s conversion as well as a try and conversion by Carl Lewis was not enough for the Caribs to defeat last year’s
tournament runners up. UG captain Rondell McArthur speaking after the game said that the win was a significant achievement for them, adding that all the hard work that they’ve done under the guidance of Head Coach Laurie Adonis has evidently paid dividends. “This is the first time we won this title and it was very challenging because all these teams especially the Caribs came here today hungry for the championship, I must take my hat off to the guys, we have improved tremendously under Coach Larry Adonis.” Before the men’s final, they were tag matches involving the female clubs with Hornets emerging winners.

GCB four-day Inter-County cricket
Surujnarine’s ton, Crandon’s 88 bat Berbice to draw By Sean Devers At 21 Kandasammy Surujnarine looks a bright prospect and yesterday at Bourda he fashioned an accomplished unbeaten century to help bat Berbice to a draw against Demerara in the opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) four-day Inter-County cricket tournament. Surujnarine faced 273 balls, batted for 358 minutes in his 132 with 12 fours and three sixes and along with Royston Crandon, whose explosive 88 lasted 99 balls and included eight fours and three sixes, added 163 for the fourth wicket to see Berbice to 304-5 by the close as offspinner Zaheer Mohamed finished with 2-58 for Demerara. Scores: Dem (442 & 1865 dec), Berbice 218 & 304-5. Berbice, needing 411 to win, resumed the final day on 33-2 in sunny conditions and night watchman fast bowler Keon Joseph, who displayed a sound technique, and Surujnarine, who looked better the longer he batted, put together 64 for the third wicket before Joseph was taken at gully off Paul Wintz, an hour and 15 minutes into
Kandasammy Surujnarine the day’s play. Joseph, who struck three well executed boundaries in his 27, batted for 83 minutes and faced 59 balls, fell at 89-3 after he was dropped at slip off leg-spinner Amir Khan on 26 at 71-2. By Lunch Berbice had progressed to 128-3 with Surujnarine, who played an array of exhilarating shots including a disdainful six onto the roof of the GCB office off Mohamed before repeating the dose on Khan, unbeaten on 60.
Crandon, who was involved in a physical altercation with Shemroy Barrington after allegedly being cursed by the Demerara batsman, was the other not out batsman on 13. Surujnarine continued to play with flair and confidence against an ordinary Demerara bowling, while Crandon took out his anger on the Demerara team as former West Indies ODI player launched a brutal assault on the hapless bowlers on a flat track to race to his halfcentury from just 45 balls aided by five fours two colossal sixes. Barrington at slip, grassed a straight forward catch to let off Crandon off Barnwell with the score on 213-3 and with Tea and rain approaching, Crandon latched onto parttime seamer Robin Bacchus with a couple of stunning straight drives which reached the boundary like scud missiles. A short sharp shower that sent the players scurrying off the field at 13:20hrs with Berbice on 208-3. Surujnarine was on 88 and Crandon on 64 and the visitors needed another 203 for an unlikely win. But more importantly from a Berbice perspective, Demerara had to take seven wickets to win and Demerara’s strange decision not to enforce the follow-on with Berbice 224 behind, seemed to be working in favour of Berbice. After an early Tea was taken, Surujnarine and Crandon continued to bat with authority and Surujnarine reached his first ton at this level after being on 99 for 12 balls. His ton came up with an imperious extra cover drive off Raj Nanan for his 12th four and his century took 193 balls and 310 minutes and also included three sixes. Crandon was put down on 80 and again on 82 with the ball rebounding from Wintz’s hands for six before Crandon, who seemed intent on going after Mohamed, lofted one high to mid-wicket in the same over with the score on 253-4. Foo (9) was then removed by Mohamed after he was dropped off the same bowler to leave the score on 279-5 before Anthony Bramble and the well entrenched Surujnarine batted until the game was called off with four overs left to be bowled in the final hour. Meanwhile, Match Referee Reon King told this newspaper that the matter involving Crandon and Barrington has been reported and is being dealt with by the GCB.
