The Integrity Commission Where is the money? Why give the much-heralded Integrity Commission a car without gas, and a mass of people to beat, but without a stick? If this sounds like the familiar Guyanese saying of ‘geein basskit fuh fech watah fuh bade duck, it is. Again: where is the money? How are these people going to do this job? The people sliding and evading must be laughing their heads off. What a commission! What a country! What a comedy! Those same ranking public servants are laughing in their Heineken and Johnnie Walker (green). Some of them can afford it; they have the green from delivering the goods. Incidentally, such delivery is not to the once-vaunted, now flaunted and mocked integrity Commission. The commission is lucky if it gets the time of day, or a declaration. This is what it has been reduced to: inoperable, if not comatose. What a racket! Make a grand speech. Swear in some willing and ready people. Point them to an uncooperative crowd long set in its lovely ways. Set them to work. And then leave them to their own devices. No tools. No resources. No oxygen nor lifeblood. That would be cash. How is this job going to get done? Well, that is the problem. Nothing doing. The wise fellows (big guys and gals) knew that from the get-go. Thus, they stalland stonewall in sturdy defiance of this appeal, that reminder, and every warning sent their way. From the inception they knew the score. Seniority has its heights from which to survey the landscape and behave accordingly: deliver nothing. Guyanese public servants may be dumb, but they are not stupid. They know the score; they have a grasp of the interlocking networks and territory. There is no danger; no exposure, no penalty forthcoming. They knew this all along. It is why they are nonchalant and without worry through a year fading into the duskiness of yet some more smoky inconclusiveness. For here it is in September and the Integrity Commission has embarrassed itself by pressuring lackadaisical Guyanese public servants to toe the line, only to get a kick in its face before a watching, disbelieving society. As expressed earlier, the cunning local public servants know what they are doing, that nothing is going to come from deliberate failure to own up and pony up. The word to the Integrity Commission was get lost. Cash would give some muscle and some standing to tangle with the big dogs. Somebody did eat the Integrity commission’s lunch; it looks emaciated: no cash transfusion; no respect from the untouchables and unresponsive. It is always challenging to send the impoverished with plastic pitchforks and barefooted to clear the way. Not when they are going after the rich and powerful; the wellentrenched and obstinate. Failure results. Check the Integrity Commission. The integrity Commission is now rapidly resembling the lore that was of pork-knockers of yore. Like those hardy pork-knockers, things started out with a shout and a song. The difference is that the Integrity Commission has no hundred-dollar bills to light to search for what is missing in the darkness. The well-meaning commissioners can’t see their way. They are left open-mouthed, empty-handed, and heavyhearted; they have no strength to chase after those who taunt them through denial after denial, and who then flaunt every appeal with silence. Quite reasonably, this hard question must be asked: was this Integrity Commission ever intended to be genuine in the first place? That is, to have the teeth that terrify the tardy and tawdry? And the host of other duckers and dissemblers, who rule supreme and untouchable? Unsurprisingly, there is much rejoicing in the land; but it is not from the ranks of the Integrity Commission. It was saddled with the futility of frustrating exercises in the meaningless. It knows better now: as in minding its manners and watching who it pushes. Maybe next year things will be different…. Oil promises to bring much cash. Some of it could wash downstream to the Integrity Commission. There is one problem though: too late. Too late to matter when the floodgates have opened and the attention of the nation is riveted elsewhere. Good hunting! Nice country this is.
Greed and race can blind us DEAR EDITOR, It is said that “the love of money is the root of all evil”. The problem with loving money is that no matter how much one gets, one still feels compelled to try to get as much more as one can of land, property, and other things that money can buy, even though we see in sickness and death, that it really was not that important after all. The love of money, greed, acquiring more and more, blinds the greedy individual to the joy and the peace that the use (not the love) of money can bring; and so mental problems and illnesses increase. We perish if we forget that for twenty-three years, we had a greedy administration of people who looked after themselves, not us, as they yielded to greed. They took as much as they could for themselves and those close to them. Now that that group is no longer in power, their thirst for power (and ill-begotten gain) is such a strong motivator for them to
continue to deprive the citizens of Guyana of a better life. In their blindness to the pitfalls related to the love of money, they tend to miss the bigger picture, i.e. that we all are one, and though they may have acquired the biggest houses, the biggest bank accounts, cars, etc., (whatever their poison is), they are all the poorer for it, and should be pitied. This is not to say that it is bad to have or to own things, but one has to be wise about how they are acquired. What the greedy ones want to do is to keep the rest of us from creating an environment that enables us to move up; by conning us once more into believing that they were good to us over the twenty-three years that they were in power. They appeal to the ignorant and racist among us; those who lack the ability to think for themselves, or hide from truth, thereby making their minds sick. An enabling environment takes time. Four years is not enough time, although we are seeing the signs of creativity
emerging from a people who no longer feel fearful and can now express their views; although sometimes it seems to me that this new-found freedom makes us lightheaded, that we have so many opinions now that can cause us to “shoot ourselves in the foot”, while executing our “constitutional right to free speech”, which may be nothing more than falling for the propaganda of the opposition. It is up to you, if you want to be tricked by the opposition, because of their appeal to your own greed, which makes you irrational in your thinking, that a government that has been in power for four short years can undo all the damage of twenty-three years, that they inherited. There was and still is a lot of mess to clean. If we are impatient and expect miracles, we will find ourselves back under the people that ripped us off for twenty-three years. No one is perfect and neither is the APNU/AFC government, but they have done a lot to reverse the harm
that the previous government, the opposition, inflicted on us. Many of our children, who grew up under the previous administration, who are now placed in offices in positions of authority, believe and have learnt from them, that it is okay to have no ethics, to blame others for their own bad actions, to make others feel as unworthy as they themselves do, as a result of their own greed and less than honest behaviours, derived from a love of money acquired from watching the opposition operate while they were the government! Our children deserve better!! Allow your minds to recall how insecure this country had become, how lawless people were (and still are in many ways), how you had to keep silent about evil, and how there is a chance now, although difficult, to pull back from the brink of selfdestruction, from the brink of living the lie that the opposition peddles. They do not mind destroying a whole country Continued on page 5
More investigations should be held against failed City Council officers DEAR EDITOR, The situation at the Georgetown Mayor and City Council is a sad one. It’s extremely sad when we have seen the issues facing the city, know the problem, but refuse to fix these. One of the major issues facing City Hall is the extent of longstanding agents who are responsible for what Georgetowners have faced in the past but continue to hold their positions as if there aren’t systems set up to save citizens from failures, especially those as gross as what we have seen from this municipality since the PPP government. Editor, Chief Constable Andrew Foo is not the only failed officer that the Councillors should investigate, but all those who have failed in the execution of their duties. I could not help noticing the youngest councillors calling the vote against Foo unjust. I am not surprised since we are aware that a former mayor, who is still very bitter about being replaced by the young, breath of fresh air that is Pandit Ubraj Narine, is spreading influence to have party members not give him their support. After all some things that could have been done before the young mayor does not
tolerate. It must however be noted that the NCM against Foo came from a party colleague of the young critics and several more of their colleagues made up the 19 persons votes who called for the removal of Foo. This man has been Chief Constable forever and outside of official events I have never seem this man making random visits to locations he is responsible for. When last have ranks been trained, or drilled? His constant claim is lack of resources. Is it a lack of resources that saw the failure of the chief for years to renew the licenses of the Council’s
firearm’s? No it was his laissez-faire and complacent attitude to his job which caused this, and this is the attitude of several other officers. They have become comfortable with the negative reviews and criticisms of the Council’s failure. And to add insult to injury they have learnt to make themselves and those close to them very comfortable with the city’s resources while citizens ache. Mayor Narine, I have seen so far is pressing to improve the council. He is doing a wonderful job but
there are agents against him. Certain councillors are colluding with officers to continue to plunder the council. When President Granger placed Mayor Narine in that office he knew exactly what he was doing. And I implore him to speak against the tag teaming that is taking place against him by the longstanding councillors who want to control the council. The Mayor must not be intimidated in the execution of this duties and more investigations should be held against failed officers. Nazeema Mohamed
Is this a new record in the history of executive firings by a US President? DEAR EDITOR, President Donald Trump has fired his National Security Advisor John Bolton. This is the third National Security Advisor to have been fired by President Trump which is consistent with a pattern of firings in several other areas of administration. I may be wrong but I think this may be a new record in the history of Executive firings by any President of the United States. And while there may not be any shedding of tears over these firings, the firing of John Bolton came as a bit of a surprise given the fact that he was politically and ideologically closer to President Trump than many in the White House. With presidential elections just over a year from now, more firings are likely especially
those who are perceived not to be unquestionably loyal to President Trump and his re-election bid. The Democratic debates have already started with some clear front runners who are already emerging such as former Vice-President Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The choice before the American electorate is fundamentally ideological, a choice between policies that are geared to promote the interests of big business as opposed to that of the working class. My own prediction is that the Democrats will do better this time around given the growing concern over the issues of health care, environmental policies, national security and taxation. Hydar Ally

Is The GECOM Chairperson going to do her job or not? DEAR EDITOR, Now, that we are cognizant of the intentions of the PNC-Led Coalition, that is, to delay elections for as long as possible and to hold on to power as long as they possibly can, what should the election body do in such circumstances? This is the question that should be on the mind of every member of GECOM. This is the burning issue, but for some clandestine reason this chairperson seems not to understand? We, the people have already made our decision, twice to be exact, we’ve made that decision at the LGE Level and are eagerly
awaiting our turn at the national level. We want an end to all of these meetings, interviews and what have you, of this illegal government with a final view to general elections soonest. We, the people, want elections because that is the end result of a successful passage of a no-confidence motion. Having said that, what should be the role of the newly installed Chairperson? I say her role should be one of expediting the dictates of the law as it relates to preparedness in time for elections within the legally stipulated time-frame. There
should be no delay in such matters because the affairs of an entire nation is at stake. However, this aspect of the nation’s business has been stymied by the many twists and turns in this ongoing saga of general election and a government’s fear of facing the electorate. Incidentally, GECOM which is supposed to be an autonomous and bipartisan body seems to be caught up in this mess also. I do hope that this electoral body get its act together and in the final analysis get into election mode. So, let us get a few pertinent facts cleared up, before we discuss this
election business in a detailed manner. For starters Madam Justice Chairperson took an entire month to as it were “settle in” that is making cordial remarks and talking to members of the secretariat, smiling and handshakes. We are talking about an entire month to make such salutations, when the urgent business of getting ready for Election 2019 was on the cards. It shows what mettle she is made of and to whose side she is leaning. This is certainly not a good sign at all and does not augur well for the independence of the chairman or GECOM. These
Guyana Police Force is being used to muzzle protesters in Region Six DEAR EDITOR, The Guyana Police Force is mandated to protect and serve the people, unfortunately the priority of the police force is to serve and protect the APNU/AFC coalition Government Ministers, government officials, while the ordinary Guyanese is being sacrificed to the mercy of bandits and criminals, thanks to the incompetence of Khemraj Ramjattan and the APNU/ AFC coalition Government. The security situation in Guyana remains a serious concern for every single Guyanese. The APNU/AFC coalition Government promised the Guyanese people in 2015 that high emphasis would be placed on security of Guyanese but the only thing that changed was the name of the M i n i s t r y t h a t i s responsible for security, increased police security of Ministers, leaving Guyana in an uncontrolled level of crimes in the entire country. The Minister who is directly responsible for public security Khemraj Ramjattan and the Guyana Police Force boastfully in reports, state, and the media highlighted, that the crime situation is under control but
the reality is quite the opposite. The fact is that Guyanese have definitely lost confidence in the Guyana Police Force, where people are refusing to even report incidents that they have encountered, and even if these matters are reported the police force is of no help. I am confident that the responses that would be given by Khemraj Ramjattan and other Government officials is that crime is under control. A 170 year culture by Indians in Guyana where music is being played for weddings is being stopped by Ramjattan and the GPF. This Indian tradition is being strangled by this APNU/ AFC Government and confined to Berbice alone. The Guyana Police Force is being used as a political football, recently at a picketing exercise at New Amsterdam Multilateral School protesters were being forced by the police to move about 500 feet from the entrance of the school while thugs of the APNU/AFC were allowed to remain at the entrance of the school. APNU/AFC thugs were allowed by the police to behave abusively
Greed and race can... From page 4 to fulfil their selfish, personal ambitions. The APNU/AFC government is not perfect, but it is way better in terms of morals and concern for the majority of the citizens, as compared with what we had for twenty-three years. Do not be fooled by the noise the opposition makes to drown out common sense. Be aware, that they still have people in the offices stymieing the work of the government, to make the government look bad. It is repugnant to hear the opposing forces who took as much as they could for themselves, actually speaking about decency and pronouncing on right and wrong, when their own conscience buries all the wrong that they did over the twenty-three years of their rule!! Rosemarie Terborg Davis
towards protesters while the police refused to remove them from in front of the school entrance. The police even tolerated the loud abuse and taunts. The protesters who were exercising their constitutional rights were not given that privilege. Senior police officers ensured that four policemen were placed to keep protesters 500 feet away from the entrance of the school. When the PPP/C Government was in office, during the 2015 campaign, protesters were allowed at the location of a meeting at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. Has there since been a change in rules?. The big question is are we moving into a full fledged dictatorship where the police force is being used to subdue and stifle democracy? President David Granger’s visit to New Amsterdam Multilateral School is an
insult to the lives of many of those students whose parents were dismissed from the sugar estates by his administration, and can barely afford to be in school. The students cash grant was taken away by this Granger-led APNU/AFC Government and with the same breath Granger is preaching that his Government wants every child to be in school, that is “ high class hypocrisy “. Granger’s rhetoric about regional involvement is just to mislead the populace. The 1 million dollars cash grant by Granger is a pittance, compared to approximately 100 million dollars that is being spent at Bermine Ground for the Republic Celebration in 2020. So you the people can actually determine what is the priority of this illegal APNU/AFC coalition Government. Regards Zamal Hussain
occurrences all show some form of collusion with the illegal powers that be and that the chairwoman is presumably acting under instructions from other outside sources. Another case in point is in the stopping of the house to house registration, then soon after backpedaling in the statement that there would be a merger of the names from that very same process she put a stop to. How can she in all fairness add registrants from an incomplete list to the National Register, this is an illegal act? This is preposterous and coming from a Chairwoman/former judge? Outrageous! You cannot merge an illegal document (the printed house to house registration forms was never sanctioned by parliament) on to the national register; this constitutes an illegal act. Further to it, as a judge, Singh should know that you cannot use an unverified - and in the majority of cases duplicated list - on to the national register, this openly constitutes a fraud. As a former judge Madam Justice Claudette Singh ought to know that you cannot, I repeat, you cannot legitimize a fraud, this is outrageous behaviour! You just have to go straight into the Claims and Objections Phase which means that those persons who would have attained the age of 18 years and are eligible to vote would have been automatically updated into the National List of Electors. Conversely, those who have died would be taken off the list by the clean and verified list that can only come from the GRO; it is as simple as that! Are we to believe then that 370,000 persons reached the age to vote in the last five
months? That is the rank foolishness this government is telling us? They are telling us in no uncertain language, that Guyana saw a rise in 370,000 “new” names in 5 months and as such this must be “merged” or in other words “added” to the NRR, this is the Anansi Story this government is giving us? Outrageous! The truth of the matter is, that figure of 370,000 represents a duplication of registrants and as such should be left alone and the real update should be sought from the established list that they allowed to expire in April of this year. Finally, what we see transpiring before our eyes is a chairperson who at best is a jellyfish actor, one who says one thing but undercover, does another. Is she afraid of doing the right thing? As someone rightly said, “this judge/chairwoman is under pressure, that is the reason for her behaving in this manner.” Well, I vehemently reject that assumption, I submit that she is not under any pressure other than that which she has created for herself. If she sticks to the letter of the law, as she asserted, then she has nothing to fear, however, a deviation from the laws that govern our country means that she is bound to get into these shameful alleyways and poorly crafted apologies would be the order of the day. If anyone that is under pressure then it is The Chief Justice and she has carried out her duties with high regards and legal precision. Claudette Singh on the other hand wants to “please” and for that reason she will go down in history as a weak, vacillating Judge/chairperson who was grossly guilty of dereliction of duty. Respectfully submitted, Neil Adams

Some things that bother me DEAR EDITOR, I have some things that bother me. When I arrived in New York I immediately learnt a new concept called networking. It is how I received my permanent job there. When I returned here I learnt about KSI (Know Somebody Inside.. (not Burnham KSI system) and P S I … y o u know......baksheesh!! Up there my Operations Manager also insisted that I understood the concept of total Managerial accountability, when he upbraided my response when I told him ‘a matter was too small for my intervention when I had MOD (Asst Mangers)’. His trite comment was “Leslie, its your Garage. You must know everything that goes on all the time”. Almost ten years ago I returned here to enjoy the peace and quiet and possible engage in a small agricultural undertaking on the family ten acre plot of land in Kuru Kururu. I settled in a family home in New Hope EBD. There are about sixty house lots, one church, a playground and about thirty occupied houses. We have one main gated entrance and exit, and four cul-de-sac streets presently. We have a mix of retirees and residents with ties to e.g. London, Canada, USA and local. We are closely knit with a Community Management Committee. Prior to leaving for the
USA I was a licenced firearm holder, issued an official Beretta for almost ten years, turned in before departure. ( I wonder if the fifty pistols lodged are still there?). Interestingly as a young lad, my father had a shotgun (and shared) licenced at Anna Regina Police. I myself bought my first air rifle from Bookers (COD to me at Charity Post Office), and moved around with the rifle in my motorcycle. I developed trough several (improved) models, and shot game birds and iguanas for our cookouts. No licence was required. At my UG National service stint I was trained and handled the SLR. When I returned I applied to be (re) issued a firearm licence. All the investigation went well, but the COP denied, without explanation, my application. I appealed the decision, and the other COP informed me to appeal to the President in keeping with the law. I did, but the then the President did not respond. When the change came, I appealed (again) to the new President, who graciously replied saying it was sent to the Minister in charge of Home Affairs for advice. I am still to be advised of the outcome. In the meanwhile my concerns. I spent several million dollars trying to develop that desolate plot of agricultural land. Pumpkins were stolen, fires were deliberately set (Police went in and found evidence), wild animals feasted on the plants, and
some persons took my plot to serve as their (free) personal nursery. I virtually kept going through the paces. On the other hand my L o n d o n remigrant neighbour, with past army connections here, has spent much more funds developing his farm. He even constructed a farm house and went through s i m i l a r experiences....deliberately set fires, wild animals, attacks by other persons. He is made of sterner stuff and is even fighting in the court system. Significantly his application for firearm licence is going through some interesting requests for personal medical certificate phases! A friend tells me that Air Rifles now need licence. Another friend tells me that bow and arrows need licence. Do we need licence for sling shots too? Please tell us all the requirements and pray tell us why, and why you turn down individual applications. Meanwhile, our community is under attack from other criminal elements. Over the years we had a few home invasions. Recently cars parked on the main internal roads and in the cul-de-sac were broken into. Last weekend it went a step further where one neighbour was held up with a pistol as she exited her car right in front of her house. Where is the police patrol? We know of surveillance camera systems. Several of us have. But we suffer from issues. The main service provider (GTT) does not offer Fibre Optics in this area. The analog service is
always buffering. ENetworks through that KSI person supplied fibre optic service. Their free one meg is useless for the cameras. So the KSI intervened and we were allowed an increase of two more megs at a price of an additional six thousand dollars. The recording was still not adequate so we appealed. KSI prevailed again, however the total five megs comes with a price of over one hundred thousand dollars. (Yes ... 5 megs (not gigs) cost over US$500.00 monthly. Try that trick anywhere in USA or London and see!) The last election I was unfortunately in New York and did not vote. If I am to vote this time I would require a declaration and a social contract from the contesting parties to address concerns. We need a Gun Control Policy that allows approved households at least a shotgun per head. There is enough smart technology to make sure the shotgun is used by the owner only. We need a control mechanism (PUC?) to allow appropriate coverage and economic pricing for universal Fibre Optic residential service. We need codified the obligations and expected outcomes that so called remigrants are entitled to on their return. Include the obligation that places like Moneygram should follow in our pension transfer payments. Stop the hassle that now exist. Somebody please listen up and take decision making responsibility. Thank you, L. A. Camacho

Guyana in limbo... Future uncertain DEAR EDITOR, Ever since December 21 last year when Charrandas Persaud moved a no confidence motion against the government he served, the country has been in limbo endless legal proceedings in the local courts - High Court, and Court of Appeal as well as the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the highest court of the land. These Court matters cost millions of dollars paid both by the government from taxpayers dollars as well as funds dished out by the opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) or sympatizers of the party since foreign senior counsel were retained by both parties. It seems to me that the coalition is getting the better part of the tug of war because although the government was supposed to demit office they continue merrily along and no one knows when elections will be held. At one stage it appeared that it will be in September, then October, November and the Chairperson of the Elections Commission, Claudette Singh was reported last Thursday to have said that elections will be before the end of the year. However Stabroek News reported on Saturday that GECOM has not yet agreed on a firm timeline for general and regional elections since it continues to examine whether the polls can be held before year end. A new element has now surfaced THE COMMISSION HAS INDICATED THAT THE COSTS WOULD GO UP. Meanwhile, the government is insisting for the results of the house to house exercise be used in the upcoming elections. Basil Williams who continues to function as attorney general
threatened to file an application to stay the effects of the Chief Justice’s ruling in relation to the merging of the current register list with the new register. This of course will further delay the setting of a date for the general elections. I had predicted the second Monday in December, but this date is no longer likely. Neither the government nor the opposition has so far named its Prime Ministerial Candidate that is yet another indication that election date is far away. According to the Coalition Accord between APNU and AFC, the Prime Minister Candidate should be from the AFC, and that movement had identified Khemraj Ramjattan rather than his friend Moses Nagamootoo, but we have to see what happens. The PPPC has not yet named its Prime Ministerial candidate, but most likely it will be an afro Guyanese. Sam Hinds was in the No. 2 spot for 15 years. Irfaan Ali has been chosen by the PPPC General Council as its Presidential candidate, but party supporters feel that Bharrat Jagdeo has full control of the General Council and he influenced the election/selection. Most of them feel that Irfaan Ali is not suitable to be the candidate for such high office. They would prefer Anil Nandlall or Frank Anthony. With billions of dollars worth of oil in the horizon, this election will be the most important in the history of the country and I am sure the politicians will want to have control of the windfall. It baffles PPP supporters why Jagdeo is taking chances with Irfaan at the helm. Guyana seems to be in limbo... too much uncertainty. Oscar Ramjeet

ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! Political promises should be made in a manner which does not create false expectations. Otherwise, instead of political capital, you can end up with a political catastrophe. Last month, the government made a promise to offer a limited number of scholarships to students desiring of pursuing the Legal Examination Certificate (LEC) at the High Wooding Law School. The announcement was greeted with excitement from law students, who explained that it can cost as much as G$5M per year for students to finance their studies in Trinidad. Many of the students were finding it difficult to afford this sum. Law students, therefore, were experiencing difficulties. The announcement of scholarships was therefore greeted enthusiastically by the local law students. A delegation even went to meet the Minister of Legal Affairs to express their support for this policy. The government never promised that all the law students would receive scholarships. But it also did not explain that by “limited” it meant four scholarships. In another section of the media, it was reported that the government has offered scholarships to four law graduates of the University of Guyana. A great many applicants are going to be disappointed. Each year, more than 30 Guyanese students usually make their way to Hugh
Wooding. Twenty five of them are granted automatic entry in the law school. In that context, four scholarships really stretches the idea of what “limited” means. To say that would be disappointing would be an understatement. The law students would have been expecting a more generous number of scholarships. It is not as if the government does not have the resources. These four scholarships are likely to cost the government a mere $20M per year. The consultant who developed the local content policy charged the government G$22M. The government could have done better. But it may have been thinking that there are other fields which should benefit from scholarships. And that is why instead of having persons apply for this small number of scholarships, it should have simply stated that the four top students of the University of Guyana’s law programme would have received full scholarships at Hugh Wooding. In that way, it would not have created false expectations. There are private individuals such as Glenn Lall, the publisher of this newspaper and Shell Mohammed, a businessman who without any fanfare have been helping to finance poor students to attend the Hugh Wooding Law School. You never hear about these Good Samaritans until these students are admitted to the Bar and in their
acceptance addresses they thank the persons who would have assisted them in financing their legal studies. There are a number of law firms who can help finance the fees for students wishing to study for the LEC. And these firms should be encouraged to offer scholarships to students. When these students return, the legal profession benefits. These firms need some encouragement. The government should provide the incentives for them to offer scholarships to law students. The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) anticipates that it will collect almost G$ 46 more this year than last year. Now that is obscene sum of money. With that massive increase in revenue collection, the GRA would not be shortchanged were the government to grant a tax write-off for every law scholarship which legal firms grant. Twenty students more students can therefore benefit from scholarships from legal firms. All it will take is a tax write off of the cost of these scholarships. But there are two problems. Some of these legal firms are tight-fisted. Some of them know how to charge large fees for cases but their sense of corporate social responsibility is not as great. The other problem is that governments like to be in charge. They want to be seen as the “good guys” and therefore they are not likely to encourage a policy which

promised law school vanished. Yet, we are told that it is still possible. All things are possible when dealing with politicians. Walk in the corner and do not get excited by promises.

Overseas-based chef found dead in Kitty apartment Police are seeking to ascertain whether foul play was involved in the death of 51-year-old US-based chef Andre Gordon, called ‘Blackie’, whose body was found in a Lot 51 Station Street, Kitty home at around 09.30 hrs yesterday. A friend discovered the 51 year old husband and father lying on the kitchen floor. He was naked and his wallet and short pants were in a nearby chair. The corpse bore no visible marks of violence, and detectives found no evidence of a break-in. However, it is
-‘foreign’ woman seen leaving premises after staying overnight believed that an individual may have carted off cash and other valuables that belonged to the victim. Kaieteur News understands that CCTV cameras in the area indicated that a woman, suspected to be a foreigner, had entered the house at around 20.00 hrs on Saturday. She was reportedly seen leaving at around 08.00 hrs yesterday. The US-based chef had came to Guyana recently and was scheduled to return
home on Tuesday. A friend who was at the scene told reporters that this is the second time this year that Gordon has travelled to Guyana, after having not visited for 12 years. Pompeii told reporters that he found Gordon’s body at about 09:30 hrs. “This morning [Yesterday]… when we pulled the sliding door, the sliding door [was] open. The grill door [was] open; the padlock

The friend said. Gordon’s neighbours have cameras installed for security purposes. Kaieteur News understands that the neighbours are currently cooperating with the police investigation. According to the friend, security camera footage that was
examined shortly after the body was found shows that after the friend and others last saw Gordon on Friday evening; he had left the house only once. Gordon reportedly arrived in Guyana on September 9, to train some local chefs. His body is being kept at Lyken’s Funeral Home.

State, Dawn HastingsWilliams; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Karen Cummings; Director General of the Civil Defence Commission, Lt. Col. Kester Craig, and other stakeholders. Helping the family through this tough time was orchestrated by a partnership between Government, the private sector, and several civil society stakeholders. Kaieteur News understands that the family will be housed at the Marriot Hotel, for five days – free of charge. Of that lot is a three week old baby. After their stay at the hotel, the family will be transported to their home, Lethem, by Trans Guyana Airways, which has also volunteered to provide the service at no cost to the family. Speaking to the Department of Public Information last night, Craig said that the CDC, since the event of the hurricane, has led efforts to contact Guyanese in The Bahamas, to determine their specific needs. He said that the team has reached out to 108 persons. Of those, 28 persons have indicated their need to return, and this family is the first five of that set. The CDC is currently making arrangements to have the rest return as soon as all the necessary arrangements are made. The CDC is in constant communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Citizenship and other stakeholders. For persons who have lost their legal documents, the Ministry of Citizenship has resolved to have those documents replaced.

Differently-able individuals can apply for tax exemptions every two, five years Minster of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, recently announced that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) completed a policy which allowed persons living with disabilities in Guyana to import smartphones and certain vehicles with the exemption of taxes. The Tax Exemption Policy which was created by GRA removes the Import Tax and Value Added Tax (VAT) from the imports on the specified articles granted to the differentlyabled persons. By way of advertisement, GRA stated that the policy applies to persons living with physical or mental impairment caused by limitations of the body structure or bodily functions which restrict the ability to perform ordinary life activities. It added that exemptions on vehicles are granted once. However, consideration can be given for the granting of exemptions on another vehicle, once the five-year period has concluded on the initial vehicle. Also re-certification and recommendations by the National Commission on Disability must be completed, followed by the approval of the Commissioner-General of GRA. Exemptions on smartphones are also granted once, but every two years. In ensuring that one is not disqualified from benefitting from the exemptions offered, GRA highlighted a number of factors which individuals must adhere to. Firstly, the vehicle cannot be sold, leased
or transferred until after five years, with the approval of the Commissioner-General. This same condition applies to smartphones after the two years period. Moreover, if migrating permanently, reduced pro-rated taxes would become due and payable from the date the individual migrates. (Proration is the act of dividing the full year’s taxes by a portion of time, for example, by the number of days in which the owner actually owns the item.) The vehicle must be retrofitted to accommodate features and other equipment to permit its use by a differently-able person. These may include a lift, special seats (e.g. swivel), wheel chair space and similar enabling features. The application process and procedures for the exemptions are now being finalized by the Ministry of Public Telecommunication and the National Commission on Disabilities. Persons will also be granted tax rebates on handsets with accessibility features, allowing visually and hearing-impaired persons to afford smartphones. Minister Hughes had said that, the ministry had made the proposal to Minister of Finance Winston Jordan in 2018, who immediately took it on board. Minister Jordan made the announcement during his November 2018 Budget presentation. The telecommunications minister had this to say about the policy, “This is another means
Man reaps 60-lb sweet cassavas
David Williams and his huge harvest.
With just a few cassava sticks given to him by friends, David Williams of 3A George Street Werk-en-rust, Georgetown, reaped a pair of cassava tubers, weighing 60 lbs and measuring close to three and a half feet in length, last Saturday. As he “showed off’’ his recent harvest at Kaieteur News yesterday, Williams recounted that it was nine months ago, one Saturday morning, when he visited the Stabroek Market. He met some friends from a village located up the Demerara River and he asked
for some cassava sticks, which they gave to him. He immediately hurried home and planted them in his backyard. However, since he is an experienced campaigner in farming, he did not expect anything spectacular. Last Saturday, in company of two friends, Williams decided to reap his long awaited harvest. “I was dumb founded when I discovered the pair of gigantic sweet cassava.” Williams alerted his neighbours, who also shared his excitement. According to him, one
woman said, “dat cassava that David find cud feed d whole street.” His colleague Maxwell Hope who helped reap and transport oversized sweet cassava tubers, remarked: “Imagine no fertilizer was used..... If he d use fertilizer imagine d size it wudda been” According to David, gardening is his daily therapy and part of his life. He also said that his inspiration came from the late President Linden Forbes Burnham who had preached “if you have land plant it.”
of empowering people. With the increased use in technology it opens many doors for them, and we hope that it will strengthen their confidence to seek or create employment and use IT for their own development and our national growth,”
A group of differently-able persons.
According to her, Guyana’s last census pegged its disability community at 49,000 persons. That number, she said has increased as it also includes senior citizens who have developed age-related hearing and physical impairment.

England win fifth Test to square Ashes series

AFP - England crushed Australia by 135 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test yesterday to level the series at 2-2, ending their historic World Cup-winning season on a high. Victory for the home side at the Oval means the Ashes series ends in a draw for the first time since 1972, although holders Australia retain the urn. The tourists, chasing an unlikely 399 to win in a shade under two days, clung on late into the evening session on the fourth day before finally collapsing as the shadows lengthened in south London. Australia, 2-1 up going into the match, were bidding to win their first Ashes series in England since 2001 but were denied by the fired-up hosts, with paceman Jofra
Kenyan Kamworor breaks half marathon world record by 17 seconds

minutes and one second. The 26-year-old made a winning return to the Danish capital, where he won his first world half-marathon title in 2014, breaking the previous record of 58:18 set by
compatriot Abraham Kiptum in Valencia last year. “It is very emotional for me to set this record,” Kamworor was quoted as saying by the IAAF. “And doing it in Copenhagen, where I won my first world title, adds something to it.” Kenya’s Bernard Kipkorir finished second with a time of 59:16 while Ethiopia’s Berehanu Wendemu Tsegu was third a further six seconds behind. Kamworor was initially behind the world-record pace in the first five kilometers before he pulled ahead to finish the final 11 km without any rivals to push him. Heavy rain in the latter stages of the race slowed him down a notch after he set a record pace to reach the 15km mark but he was still fast enough to break the world record.
Dernbach, Smith, Blackwood join Tallawahs CPL - The Jamaica Tallawahs have announced that Jade Dernbach and Dwayne Smith will be joining them for the remainder of the 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Dernbach will replace Kennar Lewis who has become unavailable due to personal reasons. Smith will come into the team for Rovman Powell who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to injury sustained during the Tallawahs match against Trinbago Knight Riders Dernbach has played in 24 ODIs and 34 T20 Internationals for England,
claiming 70 international wickets in those matches. In the recently concluded T20 Blast he claimed 11 wickets for Surrey at an average of 31.09 and an economy rate of 8.88. Smith has some serious CPL pedigree, having scored four hundreds at the tournament, the joint highest by any player. He is the fifth highest run scorer in CPL, having scored 1,584 runs in his 58 CPL matches. They have also added Jermaine Blackwood to the team as temporary cover for Andre Russell while he recovers from the blow he received while playing
Jade Dernbach (CPL) against the Trinbago Knight Riders. Blackwood has played for the Tallawahs in the past and has appeared in 28 Tests and two ODIs for the West Indies.
Archer named man of the match for his six first-innings wickets. “A very good performance,” said England captain Joe Root. “I thought we were brilliant. To bounce back from a very difficult emotional week, to come and play in the manner we have, the team has character in abundance. “This was more of a template of how to play moving forward. It is a step in the right direction. I am very proud of everyone’s effort throughout the summer.” Stuart Broad struck early to remove openers Marcus Harris and David Warner but while former captain Steve Smith was at the crease, Australia retained a faint hope of victory. But when Ben Stokes dived to his left at leg slip to catch Smith for 23, giving Broad his third wicket of the innings, England knew they had removed the biggest obstacle in their victory charge. Smith, who scored an astonishing 774 runs in just seven innings, was out for a score of less than fifty for the first time in the series. The Oval crowd gave him a standing ovation as he walked back to the dressing room in the September sunshine, with Australia in deep trouble at 85-4 in the post-lunch session. Matthew Wade offered brave resistance, scoring 117 as Archer cranked his speed up to 95 miles-per-hour in the evening sunlight, eye-balling the Australian batsman in an attempt to intimidate him. Occasional bowler Root finally got his man, luring him forward as Jonny Bairstow whipped off the bails. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach removed Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood in successive balls to end the match, two months after England won the one-day World Cup for the first time. Broad and Leach both finished with four wickets. “‘ve got a couple of regrets, starting with the toss, but after that you’ve got to give credit to England, they outplayed us here,” said Australia captain Tim Paine. “No doubt today has put a bit of a dampener on it,” he added. “There are some mixed emotions but from where this group has come from to come to England and retain the Ashes is still a huge deal. It hadn’t been done since 2001.” - Broad strikes Earlier, England added 16 runs to their overnight tally, with Archer and Leach the last men out. Broad then pounded in,

Warner, who returned to international cricket in June after a 12-month ban for balltampering, scored just 95 runs in 10 innings and was dismissed by Broad seven times. Warner’s dismissal brought Smith to the crease and he opened his account with a sweet drive through the covers for four off Archer but this time he could not find the magic. The exit of Smith, also banned over the balltampering scandal, led to one or two isolated boos but they were drowned out by applause from the crowd in appreciation of his runscoring feats. Smith was named Australia’s man of the series
while Stokes won the award for England. “It meant a lot to have that reception from the crowd today,” said Smith. “It’s been an amazing couple of months with the World Cup and the Ashes, the cricket has been spectacular.” The tourists won the first Test at Edgbaston and the fourth at Old Trafford while Stokes inspired England to victory in the third Test at Headingley. The second match, at Lord’s, was drawn. Scores: England 294 (Buttler 70, Root 57, Marsh 5-46) and 329 (Denly 94, Stokes 67, Lyon 4-69) beat Australia 225 (Smith 80, Archer 6-62) and 263 (Wade 117, Leach 4-49, Broad 4-62) by 135 runs.

Walton and spinners give Tallawahs first win CPL - Jamaica Tallawahs recorded their first 2019 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory at the fifth attempt after restricting Barbados Tridents to 140/9 and surviving a mid-innings wobble to get home with four wickets in hand thanks to Chadwick Walton’s unbeaten 51 yesterday. In conditions very different to those that saw almost 500 runs in the record breaker last time out at Sabina Park, a pitch offering turn and, most importantly, bounce kept batsmen honest and spinners interested throughout. Tridents openers Alex Hales and Johnson Charles
both fell in identical fashion, failing to get over the extra bounce George Worker was able to extract and slicing catches to point. And bounce continued to trouble the Tridents. Leniko Boucher had looked decent for 15 before chipping a return catch to Ramaal Lewis, while Jason Holder got a beauty first up from Zahir Khan that found the shoulder of the bat to give Gayle a straightforward catch at slip. JP Duminy was trying to hold things together but when Jonathan Carter holed out to long-off to hand Lewis a second wicket, the Tridents were 70/5 and running out of time and men.
Enter Ashley Nurse, who shifted the momentum in fine style. He plundered 14 in three balls from Christopher Lamont and two more Hero Maximums off Zahir Khan – accounting for over half of the total runs he conceded in his four overs and made 37 from 17 balls in a 49-run partnership with Duminy. They fell in successive deliveries, though, to plunge the Tridents right back into trouble. Duminy slapped Derval Green straight to Lewis at deep cover before Nurse was completely deceived by a slower ball to give former England international Jade Dernbach his first Hero CPL wicket, Gayle holding on to the

skied chance. Zahir Khan struck twice in his final over with two more googlies, the first trapping Hayden Walsh Jr. plumb lbw and the second even better to beat the edge of the overbalancing Roshon Primus before Phillips whipped the bails off for a smart stumping. That left Sandeep Lamichhane and Josh Lalor to scramble the final total up to something approaching respectability in the final 12 balls. Gayle and Phillips got the Tallawahs chase off to a quick start, both men finding and clearing the boundary on a regular basis to put 48 on the board in the first five overs. Both fell to Tridents skipper Holder, though, caught in the deep looking to exploit the final over of Power Play fielding restrictions. Walsh Jr. then removed Worker and Dwayne Smith lbw in successive balls to give Tridents real hope at 68/ 4 with 73 still needed. That hope was fleeting. Javelle Glen hit Lamichhane for two Hero Maximums in the next over, Walton added

They added 45 together in just four overs before Glen holed out to Hales to give Lamichhane something to show for a difficult day. Lewis fell cheaply but the Tallawahs were always in control of things while Walton was at the crease. He finished the match with a six to reach his half-century, which got the Tallawahs home with nine balls to spare and their season up and running at last.
U p c o m i n g Fixtures: Tuesday 17 September – St Kitts & Nevis Patriots v Trinbago Knight Riders (6pm), Warner Park. Scores: TRIDENTS 140 for nine off 20 overs (Ashley Nurse 37, JP Duminy 31; Zahir Khan 3-20, George Worker 216, Ramaal Lewis 2-23). Windies slump continues with seven-wicket lost in T20 opener Fabio Quartararo had to settle for a fourth podium of the season after Marc Marquez denied him a maiden MotoGP victory at Misano. OmniSport - Marc Marquez came out on top after a thrilling last-lap battle with Fabio Quartararo to win the San Marino Grand Prix yesterday. Petronas Yamaha rookie Quartararo led for the majority of the race and looked set to become the second-youngest rider to top a MotoGP podium, but reigning champion Marquez denied him at the death. The lead changed hands three times on an enthralling final lap, before the Frenchman had to sit up at turn 14 and thus granted Marquez enough of an advantage to hold on for the win. Pole-sitter Maverick Vinales had to settle for third, taking the final step on the podium ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha team-mate and home favourite Valentino Rossi. The victory was Marquez’s 77th across all classes and moved him past Mike Hailwood into sole ownership of fourth in the all-time list, while extending his lead in the riders’ championship to 93 points. Marquez may have produced his worst qualifying result of the season at Misano but he was up from fifth to third by the end of the opening lap. Quartararo, who had been tipped to challenge for victory at the British Grand Prix last time out but crashed on the first corner, made his move on Vinales on the back straight and Marquez followed him on the next lap with a clever dive down the inside at turn nine. The duo dropped Vinales and were left to battle it out for the win on their own. The Repsol Honda rider failed with an attempt to pass before finally securing the overtake into turn one on the final circuit. Quartararo regained track position quickly but gave it up just as fast, and when he
misjudged his line at the start of the final sector the game was up. Alex Rins triumphed at Silverstone but slid out after being handed a long-lap penalty and then retired from the race, while Andrea Dovizioso – Marquez’s nearest rival in the championship standings – finished behind Franco Morbidelli in sixth. Pol Espargaro started second - Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s best qualifying performance - but finished seventh, while Jorge Lorenzo was down in 14th and over 47 seconds behind Marquez. TOP 10 1. BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – West Indies Women’s misery continued here Saturday night when they suffered yet another defeat to Australia Women, in the opening Twenty20 International of the three-match series. Choosing to bat first in the affair under lights at Kensington Oval, West Indies Women could only muster a paltry 106 for eight off their 20 overs, with captain Stafanie Taylor top-scoring with an unbeaten 44 off 51 deliveries. Not for the first time, fast bowler Megan Schutt was the stand out for the visitors, claiming three for 31. In reply, captain Meg Lanning stroked a run-a-ball unbeaten 54 as the Aussies overhauled their target with seven balls remaining in the contest to win by seven wickets. West Indies have now lost all four matches on the tour following their 3-0 whitewash in the preceding ICC Women’s Championship series in Antigua. It was Taylor who kept the innings together after the hosts found themselves in early trouble, losing Britney Cooper (0) and Kyshona Knight (1) in the first over with a single run on the board. Cooper missed a cross-batted heave at Schutt and was bowled while Knight was run out at the striker’s end after being found short of her ground by a throw from backward point. When Reniece Boyce (6), Stacy-Ann King (4) and Natasha McLean (13) followed in quick succession, West Indies Women were slumping badly at 34 for five in the sixth over. Taylor came to her side’s rescue, however, counting three fours and a pair of sixes as she put on a vital 29 with Sheneta Grimmond (15) for the sixth wicket to spare them complete embarrassment. West Indies then made an impressive start with the ball, fast bowler Chinelle Henry

Henry bowled Mooney leg-stump in the second over and returned in the fourth to have Healy holing out to Shabika Gajnabi at deep mid on. West Indies squandered an ideal chance to remove Lanning early when Taylor put her down at slip on one off fast bowler Shamilia Connell in the third over. Lanning made the most of the reprieve, carving out six fours as she put on 57 for the third wicket with Ellyse Perry (14). Scores: WEST INDIES WOMEN 106 for eight off 20 overs (Stafanie Taylor 44 not out; Megan Schutt 3-31). AUSTRALIA WOMEN 108 for four off 18.5 overs (Meg Lanning 54 not out; Chinelle Henry 2-15).

The other team taking full points on the day was debutants Vurlon Mills Academy who defeated
defending champion Timehri Panthers 2-0. In a keenly contested match, Mills Academy took the lead with just one minute to the half time whistle, Christian Enderson tucking the ball past Panthers’ goalkeeper Jaden Tasha. Jordan takes four on debut before Lewis fireworks seal big deal for Patriots CPL - Akeem Jordan took 4/33 on his Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) debut to set St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on their way to a sixwicket victory over St Lucia Zouks last night at Warner Park. J o r d a n ’s are the second-best figures ever for a Hero CPL debutant, and the best since the very first year of the tournament. He took a wicket in each of his four overs as the Zouks were restricted to 138/9 from their 20 overs, a total the Patriots chased down with minimal fuss thanks largely to Evin Lewis’ ferocious 65 from 30 balls. The Patriots recovered quickly from the early loss of Devon Thomas for just a single, with Lewis and Laurie Evans adding 45 for the second wicket either side of a short rain delay. Evans was bowled by a beauty from Fawad Ahmed that spun past the edge into off stump, but Lewis was on a mission. Having set the record for the fastest ever Hero CPL half-century earlier in the tournament, he became just the second man to score 100 career Hero CPL sixes with the first of his six sixes here. Chris Gayle has 160. Lewis dominated a 62run stand with Mohammad Hafeez that finished the game as a contest, reaching his 50 in just 26 balls with his fifth six, hit high and handsome off Kavem Hodge. That started a run of 20 runs in four balls before Hodge exacted a measure of revenge, Lewis finally

The Patriots were just 14 short of their target when another flurry of rain forced another short stoppage, but the home side’s celebrations were not delayed for long. Mohammad Hafeez fell for a measured 26 with the finishing line in sight, but Carlos Brathwaite finished the job with a huge six and with a whopping 31 balls to spare – to seal a victory that had looked on the cards ever since that dramatic first Hero CPL spell from Jordan reduced the Zouks to 33/3. Jordan struck a key blow in the very first over of the night as Andre Fletcher slapped a short ball straight to Fabian
Allen at point. In his next over he picked up an even bigger wicket as the inform Rahkeem Cornwall sliced one down to thirdman where Sheldon Cottrell took a smart catch. Hodge got a couple of boundaries away in Jordan’s third over inside the Power Play but then picked out deep midwicket looking for a third. Usama Mir got to work in the middle of the innings, dismissing Cato and Colin de Grandhomme while giving up just 13 runs in four expert overs of leg-spin. De Grandhomme made 30, while Daren Sammy unleashed a couple of huge Hero Maximums in his 18. But Sammy and
Kesrick Williams fell to stunning diving catches in successive balls from keeper Thomas – Williams the fourth victim for Jordan – to leave the Zouks 100/ 8. H a r d u s Vi l j o e n a n d Obed McCoy added an enterprising 35 for the ninth wicket, but the damage had been done. Victory for the Patriots lifts them to third in the Hero CPL table, behind only the unbeaten heavyweight pair of Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders. Action in the tournament continues tomorrow with the Trinidad Knight Riders (TKR) battling the Patriots at Warner Park form 6:00pm.

Johnson’s consecutive ton and Wilson’s 5-45 help GCC to another emphatic win By Sean Devers After a delay of 135 minutes due to overnight rain, GCC romped to a second consecutive innings victory when they hammered GDF by an innings and 142 runs yesterday at Bourda in the GCA’s GSIE, Star Party Rentals & Trophy Stall Twoday First Division cricket competition. Relying to GDF’s 87, GCC declared after 5.4 overs into the day’s play for 323-4. Set 236 to avoid an innings defeat GDF fell for 94 in their second innings for a crushing defeat after the host had beaten UG by an innings and 253 runs last weekend at Bourda. GCC’s win yesterday was orchestrated by an unbeaten 108 from 123 balls with seven fours and six sixes by Guyana Captain Leon Johnson who extended his third wicket partnership to 176 with gifted 14-year-old Movindra Dindyal who reached the boundary five times and faced 117 balls in his 68. Off-spinner Leon Andrews took 3-88 from 23.4 overs before left-arm spinner Stephon Wilson bagged 5-45 for eight wickets in the match

Skipper Ronaldo AliMohammed came to the crease and blocked three balls before hitting Andrews to long-on without addition to the score for a four-ball duck at which time the declaration was made. Set the task of batting out the rest of the day to save the game, Andrews (9) missed a full ball and was LBW to Timothy McAlmont at 12-1 before Kurt Lovell (7) was run out, to give the impression that the Army were hunting an impossible win. Randy Lindore (19) hit Wilson over long-off for six before hitting the ball again over the ropes at deep squareleg and was just beginning to look good when Wilson trapped him LBW, a verdict that could have gone either way to leave the score 57-3. Hibino beats doubles partner Doi to clinch Hiroshima title (Reuters) - Japan’s Nao Hibino beat compatriot and doubles partner Misaki Doi 6-3 6-2 at the Hana-cupid Japan Women’s Open in Hiroshima yesterday to win her first WTA title since 2015. The two unseeded players were playing in the first all-Japanese WTA Tour final in 22 years and Hibino, who ousted top seed Hsieh Su-Wei in the quarter-finals, wrapped up the contest in 68 minutes. Although Doi broke early twice in the opening set to take a 3-1 lead, Hibino
stormed back into the tie to win the next nine games to swing the momentum her way. “I was so nervous today, so much more than the semifinals,” Hibino said. “But because I experienced being nervous in the semi-finals, I knew what to expect. I was able to stay positive during the match today.” Hibino broke Doi seven times in the match and won 71% of her first service points to win her second career title since her maiden win at the Tashkent Open four years
ago. Doi made 14 unforced errors in the opening set alone and did not recover until going down 4-0 in the second set. “She was playing well. Today, she was persistent,” Doi said. “She has a strong backhand but she was also using her forehand to structure points well, giving me very little chance to play my game. “I learned to believe in my own game and never give up this week. What I learned will be useful as I head to Osaka.” Doi did not go home empty handed, though, as she teamed up with Hibino to beat Christina McHale and Valeria Savinykh 3-6 6-4 10-4 in the doubles final. “I’ve watched Misaki struggle with a drop in her ranking and have been happy to watch her get her ranking up,” Hibino added. “I think hard work has paid off for both of us because we are both in the finals of this tournament in Japan.” Both players will crack into the top 100 when the WTA rankings are updated today.
GDF’s Randy Lindore was just beginning to look good when he was trapped LBW to Stephon Wilson who had 5-45 and match figures of 8-83.
NA Mayor blasts Councillor for... From page 34 personalities both East and West Berbice (Regions 5 and 6) and will enable them to enhance their capabilities. The extra time being taken was because of the prolonged inclement weather. However, work has restated and is going full steam ahead. The Mayor noted that the space is inadequate to construct the Pavillion and other amenities and the Council is closing the nearby dumpsite. When completed the track will be 400M in dimension and outfitted with eight-lanes. It is expected to be similar in
dimensions to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany and have all facilities to host International Track and Field events and a full size football field will be constructed on the inside of the track. Other games areas, stands and other necessities will be constructed depending on the availability of space and funds. The construction is presently in the third phase which involves demarcation, land clearing, laying of drainage pipes, inner and outer track works and asphalting and is being undertaken by BK
International. Phase 4 entails the laying of the synthetic track. Phases 1 and 2 for the project were undertaken by German Company BSW Regupol. The famed Burnham Park facility, which was named after the first Executive President of Guyana, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, sits on an estimated 10 acres of land. The project is being funded by the Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Culture Youth and Sports and The Ministry of Education.

NA Mayor blasts Councillor for misinformation on construction of Synthetic Track New Amsterdam Mayor Winifred Haywood has broadsided Councillor Zamal Hussein for spreading false information concerning the construction of the Synthetic Track at Burnham Park, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The Mayor accused Hussein of being idle and spreading rumors about the cost of the track. Hussein who is the a Councillor on the Regional Administration made some damning allegations about the cost of the track at a recent Regional Administration meeting. Hussein stated that the initial cost of the Synthetic Track was $60M. “To date the project should have been completed. It is still ongoing, we don’t know the figure.
Now we hear it is over 100M. We don’t know who choose the location. It’s the wrong location and now we have to increase the amount of money being spent, by over $50-$60M. That is the wrong location, because of the water coming up; we got to build it to a certain level.” He noted that, “We could have diverted the Synthetic Track to a different location and save a lot of money. This is the kind of incompetence we have to deal with, now the expense is on the tax payers.” However Mayor Haywood noted that it is appalling that Hussein could be so blindsided and deliberate in trying to spread false information and indulge in rumor mongering. She said
that when they were given the documents concerning the track over two years ago the cost, which is in Black and White, the cost was $167M. (KN has seen estimated documents of $176M). She wondered where Hussein got the information from. It is public knowledge; they could have checked and told or shown the cost. Instead of trying to make a fool of himself, he should be commending the Government for taking such a wonderful initiative of constructing a world class facility which was long overdue, in Berbice. Spain beat Argentina 95-75 to win FIBA World Cup
Spain’s Rudy Fernandez lifts the trophy to celebrate winning the FIBA World Cup at Wukesong Sport Arena, Beijing, China. (REUTERS/Jason Lee) BEIJING (Reuters) - Spain beat Argentina 95-75 to win the FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time since 2006 yesterday, completing a stunning campaign for a squad considered by many to be among the outsiders when the 32-team tournament began. The Spaniards scored first and never relinquished the lead, relying on swarming interior defence and superior rebounding to snuff out the offensive threat of 2004 Olympic champions Argentina. Point guard Ricky Rubio racked up 20 points and three assists and Marc Gasol and Willy Hernangomez swatted three shots each as Spain pulled down 47 rebounds, 20 more than Argentina, en route to a comprehensive victory. For Gasol it was the crowning achievement of an incredible year that saw him win an NBA World Championship with the Toronto Raptors before leading his national team to glory. His 33 points in the semi-final victory over Australia put them in a position to fight for the gold medal, but it was his defence that put them on the top step of the podium. From the opening tip, the 34-year-old dominated the driving lanes to the basket that Argentina had used to such great effect against France, forcing them into outside shots that would not fall. He was equally effective banging under the basket at the other end and, though he made only two of his nine field goal attempts, he hit nine of his 12 free throws to maintain
the gap between the two teams. He and Rubio were rewarded for their performances in Spain’s unbeaten run to the gold medal with a place in the tournament’s five-man All-Star team, which was announced after the final, with Rubio named the tournament’s most valuable player. “Right now, we made history, and we were ready for that. We had a great tournament, (but) you’ve got to give credit to Argentina, we had to fight for this win,” Rubio told a news conference. “It’s just amazing how the whole tournament has been us as a team, and you can tell. We weren’t the most talented team, the biggest team, put whatever you want, but we were the team that had the big heart.” There was to be no fairytale ending for the seemingly evergreen Argentinian Luis Scola, whose superb show against France had helped to carry his side into the final. The 39-year-old power forward, his jetblack hair now flecked with gray at the temples, was kept well-shackled throughout, and it was late in the third quarter before he notched up his first point from the free throw line. Spain’s win marked the second time they have won the tournament on Asian soil, having claimed the 2006 title by beating Greece in Saitama, Japan. Earlier in the day, Nando De Colo netted 19 points as France shot 43% from behind the arc to take their second consecutive World Cup bronze medal with a 67-59 win over Australia.
