Man, 21, charged with Shoplifter gets 12 months dredge owner’s murder A 21-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a dredge owner who was beaten to death at Far Backdam, Cuyuni River, in June. After spending eleven weeks on the run, Colin O’Neil Blair, called ‘Bow Foot’ was taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face the indictable charge. Blair stood accused of murdering Royston Sylvester Greenidge, called ‘Roy’, at Far Backdam on June 18, last, during the course of a robbery. He was not required to plead. The case was prosecuted by Police Inspector, Michael Grant who

Murder accused Colin Blair did not reveal the details of the murder. Blair was remanded to prison and the case is set to be called again

on September 10 before Chief Magistrate Priya SewnarineBeharry. According to reports, Greenidge, a 38-year-old dredge owner, was on his way to his home with a bag containing an undisclosed sum of cash and gold when he was attacked by someone with a piece of wood. Allegations are that the suspect dealt Greenidge several lashes to the head, grabbed the haversack and ran away. The accused had been in hiding since the June 18 incident but was nabbed last Saturday (August 30) at Eteringbang Backdam, Cuyuni River. A wanted bulletin had also been issued for him.

Repeat offender jailed for stealing lawyer’s AC unit A 37-year-old man, who was caught red-handed stealing the air-conditioning unit from a lawyer’s office on Sunday, has been jailed for 12 months. Ali Singh appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to the simple larceny charge. Reports are that about 15:30 hours, Singh was seen removing one of the five airconditioning units and the copper tubing installed at the office of Attorney-at-Law

Glenn Hanoman housed at the Maraj Building on King Street, Georgetown. Passersby, who saw Singh remove the items, went into the yard and held onto him. The matter was reported to the Brickdam Police Station and ranks came and arrested him. He was later charged with stealing the items which amount to $175,000. During the court proceeding, Singh admitted to stealing the items and stated that he has a drinking problem.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant told the court that Singh is well known to the police and has been convicted on more than one occasion on simple larceny charges. Hanoman explained that due to Singh’s actions none of his five AC units are working in his office. The lawyer opined that it is better that Singh be kept in prison where he can rehabilitate rather than being in the streets where he would most likely steal from other persons.

Storage bond breakage lands Kitty man in court A 49-year-old man accused of breaking into a storage bond and making off with a $1M in items was remanded to prison when he appeared in court yesterday. Clinton Kissoon of Wi l l i a m St r e e t , K i t t y, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the break and enter and larceny charge. The court heard that between August 28 and 29

at Second Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, Kissoon broke and entered the bond of Alpha Imports and Exports and stole one Toshiba laptop, one Kindle and a quantity of perfume a n d s o a p p o w d e r. T h e items which amounted to $1M belong to Denbeigh Rickford. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant objected to bail citing the prevalence, nature and gravity of the offence. He said that some of the articles were recovered.

Grant revealed that Kissoon was previously convicted in the said court on a simple larceny charge and he was ordered to post a $200,000 fine. The Magistrate granted the Prosecution request and Kissoon was remanded to prison. The case will be called again on September 10.

A 38-year-old carpenter, who strolled into a city supermarket on Monday, and stole a can of Bop spray, has been jailed for shoplifting. Juman Narine admitted to taking a $1595 can of Bop spray from the Survival Supermarket branch on Sheriff Street, Georgetown, when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Narine was arrested around 19:00 hours on Monday after a security guard saw him pick up the item and slipped it into his pocket. As he was making his way out of the supermarket, the guard confronted him. The matter was reported and the police arrested Narine. The item was found in his pocket. After being held in custody, the carpenter appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman and pleaded guilty to the simple larceny charge. He explained that he was drunk at the time and wasn’t fully aware of what he was doing. Notwithstanding his

excuse, Narine was jailed for 12 months.

Inspector Michael Grant told the court that the item was recovered from Singh’s pocket, but the Front Road, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown resident, denied the charge and stated that he was going to purchase it. His bail was set in the sum of $5000 and he was ordered to return to court on September 10.

Meanwhile, another man, Sean Singh, was brought before the said Magistrate charged with stealing a $400 body spray at the Fazia’s Collections branch on America and Longden Streets, Georgetown. Police Prosecutor,

Woman on bail for calling another “fat slut” A 26-year-old unemployed woman charged with using insulting language after she called another a “fat slut” was granted bail when she appeared in court yesterday. Sasha Tuller of Leonora, West Coast Demerara was taken before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Tuller, a first-time offender, is accused of using insulting language to another woman at Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown on August 29. She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $20,000 bail. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that Tuller called the woman a “fat slut” and

the matter was reported to the police, hence the charge. The case is set to be called again on September 11.

Birth certificates row sparks vicious attack A 34-year-old man almost lost his life Monday night when he reportedly questioned the decision of the mother of his two children to remove his name from his children’s birth certificates. Ian Henry of Craig Street, Campbellville, is claiming that his ex-partner sent four men, armed with guns and cutlasses to “finish him off” sometime around 22:00 hrs on Monday, minutes after they had an argument about the name changes. Henry was chopped to his left shoulder, ear and hand. He was discharged from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday after receiving some 35 stitches. During an interview yesterday, Henry said that he is scared to return home and is forced to stay with friends because he received information that his attackers are still searching for him. He said that it all started last week when his ex-partner returned from the United States of America to spend some time. He explained that she left the country seven years ago and since then he has been maintaining his two children. “She left here when the boy was three-years-old and the girl was two months and I have been taking care of them. The girl is now seven years old. Whenever my ex comes here, she would take the children to spend time with her,” Henry explained. He added that a few days ago while the children were spending time with their mother, she informed him that she had his name removed from the children’s birth certificates, and from that revelation an argument escalated. “When she tell me I get into a rage and leave, and while I was walking away, I tell her to take her children and then I hear she went and tell the children that I am dead, so I went to her on Monday and asked her why she didn’t tell the children I was dead

seven years ago when she left them with me and gone,” Henry related. He added that they got into an argument and he left the area and went by a friend to relax for a few hours. “I left my friend late and when I was heading home I saw a big crowd and I just walked into my yard and two men approached me and started attacking me. My brother came and we overcome them and they run away.” He further related that minutes after the men left, they returned with two other accomplices - this time, two were armed with guns and two with cutlasses. “As soon as dem men come they started firing shots and I run, and they come and jump on me and start kicking me up. One of them point the gun to my head and another one put the knife to my neck and cut me,” the 34-year-old

recalled. He said that after what seemed like a “brutal torturing” the men jumped into a vehicle and his expartner entered the same vehicle and they drove off. “The only reason they leave is because they thought I was dead.” Henry is calling on the police to act swiftly and capture his attackers because he wants to return home and continue living his life instead of hiding. “The police like they done taking sides. When I went to them and gave my statement, they tell me that my ex coming in with her lawyer and that we will have a discussion, so I asked if they won’t get the names of my attackers from her and they said that if she (his ex partner) doesn’t want to talk they can’t beat her,” Henry claimed. Investigations are ongoing.

Cuba clamps down on personal importation of foreign goods HAVANA, Cuba - CMC Cuba has implemented new rules that will restrict the personal importation of foreign goods into the country except where locally made items are expensive and scarce. The government says the restrictions are meant to curb abuses that have turned air travel in particular into a way for professional “mules” to illegally import supplies for

both black-market businesses and legal private enterprises that are supposed to buy supplies from the state. With the new guidelines in place a list detailing the number imported items that can be imported has been published. According to the list, for example, 22 pounds of detergent will be allowed instead of 44; one set of hand tools instead of two; and 24 bras instead of 48.

The rules also state that tour car tyres are still permitted, as are two pieces of baby furniture and two flatscreen televisions. Cuban customs also bars passengers from bringing in items worth more than US$1,000. Instead of examining receipts, customs agents are given a long list assigning pre-set values to certain goods.

PRIDE AND ANGER A person is supposed to have pride in themselves, their achievements, their family, their friends, and most of all in their country. In this regard, pride is a good thing. Sometimes, however, pride can be a bad thing. Being too proud can at times be the downfall of many. Not being willing to say sorry; not being willing to deal with an insult from someone

we consider to be a lesser being; not being willing to say sorry, not being willing to ignore the ignorant, not being willing to compromise and treat others like human beings, are all symptoms of a pride which can lead to our own downfall. I have seen situations where the powerful go after the weak, simply because their pride was hurt by

something said, done or omitted by the weaker person. I have seen powerful people behave as if they are lords and demand a level of respect, which, if not forthcoming, results in a vicious campaign of harassment and victimization against the weak. The downfall of many a great person has been his or her pride.

It is pride that sometimes drives people to violence. Each day you pick up the newspaper and you read stories of violence. Each day somebody dies because someone else could not control his or her anger. And the reason that triggered that anger is because someone did something to offend another’s pride. Most days you can pick up the newspaper and read about another unnatural death in our country. The cause was a quarrel between two persons. This quarrel leads to someone feeling that another should not be doing or saying something, leading to anger and eventually to violence and murder. If only we can learn in this country to suppress our pride, there would be less violence in our country, and particularly in our homes and in our relationship with others. I have always emphasized that sometimes it is best when you are wrong to not react; when you are insulted to not respond, because your response invariably will be based on your feelings of

hurt, and it is best to act out of compassion and love rather than anger and hatred. The many incidents of domestic violence in Guyana are not going to abate unless we deal with the root causes of the violence. One suggestion which has been made is for countrywide anger management classes. But which target audience will these seminars meet? Will they reach down to those households which need it the most and how will those households be identified? And would training persons in how to deal with anger end the cycle of violence? What needs to be understood is not only how to deal with anger, but more importantly, why one becomes angry. I am sure that if a detailed assessment was done on cases of anger it will be found that the source of anger has to do with pride. Controlling our pride, learning to understand how to deal with situations which offend our pride, is therefore critical to understanding why there is so much violence within our society. It is terrible to see how

lives are being destroyed in this country because persons are seeking to get even rather than find a solution to a problem. Even if that solution entails someone having to give up ground, it is far better than having to assert one’s pride through destructive and violent actions. A good place to begin is the way we speak and relate to others. There is too much verbal abuse taking place in Guyana, particularly in homes. If someone does something wrong, it is better to allow the passion of the moment to subside before responding. It is also important before responding, to question our feelings and to ask why it is that we are feeling the way we are feeling. If the answer to that is because our pride was offended, then it is the offended person rather than the offender who has the greater problem.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN

Gerhard Ramsaroop, GWI, the National Park and White man redemption I would advise readers that as they take in this column paragraph by paragraph, they must bear in mind we are referring to a country that achieved Independence half a century ago. We must bear in mind too that since Independence, many of the Cabinet members and policy-makers of Guyana have been people who came from very ordinary backgrounds with working class income.

Part of this column is on Robert Persaud’s Ministry. This columnist knew Robert Persaud when he was a poor seventeen-year-old kid, selling milk for his father. You would think a person like Persaud would understand the need to improve the lives of working people. I don’t think he does. Let’s begin the main descriptions of this article. The last thing my wife said to me Monday morning

when I drove off after driving her to work was, “Don’t forget to go to GWI for the bill.” Straight to GWI on Vlissengen Road I went. GWI has told the Guyanese people that they must pay even if they don’t receive a bill. GWI no longer sends out bills. This is fifty years after Independence and this is in a world where it is normal for a company to send your monthly bill. Parking is a nightmare outside GWI. There is a huge piece of parapet that can hold many cars, but it has huge craters. Simply filling up the craters would facilitate parking, which is what the White colonial would have done when he ruled us. Since 1992, Roger Luncheon has been in charge of the NIS. Parking outside the NIS is impossible. And guess why? The large parapet just needs to be graded. I entered the GWI office and there were about thirty persons in the queue, one of whom was Gerhard Ramsaroop, executive

member of the AFC. His number was 70. My number was 72. We begin to chat. While in conversation, I asked Gerhard what he was there for. He said to pay a bill. I told him he didn’t have to join the line. The queue is for people who want to make enquiries. Gerhard said he didn’t know that since there is no information to guide customers. The cashiers’ wickets were empty and Gerhard paid his bill within one minute. If I didn’t direct him, Gerhard would have waited for three hours before paying his bill. As I waited something struck me. Each person in the line takes about twenty minutes with the GWI clerk. I figured that at number 72, I wasn’t coming out until hours after. All I wanted was the bill that would take a minute to print. I demanded to see the supervisor. She informed me that you don’t need to join the line for a bill. The queue is only for people who have queries that need to be sorted out. With disgust in me, I

enquired of her as to how I was supposed to know that. How was Gerhard Ramsaroop supposed to know that he was in the wrong section? Brace yourself for this woman’s explanation. According to her, when you enter GWI’s office, you must go up to the security and inform her of the reason you are there. That is silly and nonsensical. All over the world people go into an institution and they take a number and wait for it to be called. No one reports to the security. It just doesn’t happen in the real world. Only in a mud-hole named Guyana. I paid my bill and left for my customary exercise in the National Park. When I started out at the Park, it had a middle-sized administrative office. Some guys robbed the place of its payroll, so they fenced the compound. Over the past three years, that administrative office has been extended to four times its original size and now is a posh, first world- looking structure. After my bitter experience of post-colonial failure that

Frederick Kissoon morning at GWI, I took a walkabout at the sections of the National Park where the workers toil away. Brace yourself for the horrors of post-colonial failure. Every building where the workers have to function has a dilapidated roof or the roof is falling down. In the stores where workers have to function every minute of the day, the sewage pipes have collapsed and are lying on the ground. I pointed that out to the General-Manager. Robert Persaud, the former milkseller, is the Minister in charge of the National Park. I am convinced in my mind that the white colonial would have treated us better. I repeat in this column for the third time, Guyana needs a revolution and the Samuel Doe treatment for those who have destroyed this nice country.

GECOM committed to Truck driver faces court for credible voters’ list elderly pedestrian’s death While the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has listed its concerns as regards the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) produced by the Guyana Elections Commission, (GECOM), Deputy Chief Elections Officer, Vishnu Persaud, has noted that the commission is committed to ensuring a credible list of voters. Responding to the recent disclosure made by PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee that the names of almost 3000 dead persons are on the voters’ list, Persaud said that “GECOM welcomes information as it regards to any perceived irregularities or discrepancies and will investigate to ensure that the voters’ list remains accurate and credible.” During a press briefing on Monday, Rohee claimed there are major discrepancies associated with the Preliminary List of Electors (PLE). He said that members of the party have found 2,958 dead persons listed on the PLE. Among those on the list are former President Arthur Chung and the wife of the late President Forbes Burnham, Viola Burnham.

- Deputy Chief Elections Officer According to Rohee, checks on the PLE for Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine accumulatively accounted for 450 of the overall sum of dead persons. He added that Region Three’s list had 232 “dead persons” and 345 were discovered on the Region Two list. Further, Rohee noted that 430 names of persons who no longer exist were on the list for Region Five while Region Six’s list, with the highest number of dead people, has 925. Regions Four and Ten, separately, had the same number of dead voters; 288. Rohee said that the PPP has since sent its findings to GECOM, with the hope that the Commission will take necessary action. Rohee called on GECOM to ensure a credible list of electors is produced at the end of this current extended “Claims and Objections” period. Yesterday, Persaud explained that there is a procedure during the “Claims and Objections” period in which persons can object to the names of persons on the

list, who are no longer eligible to vote. The Deputy Chief Elections Officer noted that the General Register’s Office (GRO) would periodically forward to GECOM list of persons, who are deceased. This information, he said, would be used as a guideline when removing the names of deceased persons from the voters’ list. However, when objecting to a name on the list, Persaud said that persons are required to produce relevant documents to support their claims. “We would need the documents to support those claims…We cannot flag dead persons without tangible evidence. It is a legitimate part of the procedure, because I’m sure we will encounter problems if we remove names from the list without the relevant information,” Persaud asserted as he maintained that GECOM is working assiduously to ensure that the process leading up to General Elections remains clear and legitimate.

The man, who was reportedly behind the wheel of the beverage truck which killed an elderly pedestrian six weeks ago, was released on $1M bail when he appeared in court. Ravin Singh, 27, of Lot 46 North East Grove, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Singh, a driver employed at the Guyana Beverage Incorporated, is accused of driving in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor lorry GNN8476 on July 14, last on the Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, thereby causing the death of Rajmattie Ram, of Triumph, East Coast Demerara. He was not called upon to respond since the charge was laid indictably. According to information received, Ram, a pedestrian, was struck down by a motor lorry at the junction with Robb Street, around 14:30 hours that day. At the time of the accident, the elderly woman was holding onto her grandson’s hand as they attempted to cross to the other side of the busy roadway.

VICTIM: Rajmattie Ram

She reportedly sustained severe head and bodily injuries when she was dragged a short distance before the truck came to a halt. The 73-year-old was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was pronounced dead on arrival. In court yesterday, Singh’s attorney Debra Kumar applied for reasonable bail. She said that he was no flight-risk and explained that although the accident occurred six weeks ago, her

client has been reporting to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday as was mandated of him. Kumar claimed that there is an eyewitness who saw that the woman was struck by a bus and not the truck. The Prosecution was represented by Police Inspector, Michael Grant who did not object to bail. The Magistrate granted bail. The case will be called again on September 9 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

mined that it had found ways to engage in logging operations without the necessary operating documentation. ECHO has condemned the actions of the company and urged for decisive measures to rectify environmental problems. The Government on Monday announced that the National Protected Areas Trust Fund would receive $2B from mining money. Guyana’s Protected Area System is made up of the Kaieteur National Park, Kanuku Mountains Protected Area, Shell Beach Protected Area, Iwokrama Rainforest, the Zoo and Botanical Gardens and other urban parks. According to the Natural Resources and the Environment Minister, Robert Persaud, the announcement of the funds to be contributed underscores the Government’s commitment to the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and the conservation of biodiversity in Guyana. “Unlike many of the countries in the region, Guyana has taken the novel approach of using proceeds from the extractive sector to support protected areas management, and in doing so, further reaffirms Guyana’s deep and abiding commitment to finding the balance between conservation and development,” Persaud said.

Community support required to help halt abuse – Human Services Minister “We are not interested in your names, what we are interested in is having the complaints,” said Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster, as she emphasised the importance of communities helping to prevent incidents of child abuse. And making reports of child abuse could be as simple as dialling the hotline number of the Child Care and Protection Agency – 2270979. The hotline is a 24-hour service offered by the Agency. “Call the hotline number and make the report,” said the Minister as she pointed out that although an individual’s identity is not important, of importance is the need to have “reports received in a timely way so that they can be properly investigated.” And according to the Minister, too, once all details of a complaint are forthcoming, such as the community, the address and other information, “I can assure you that we will

promptly address those issues.” The Minister’s comments were vocalised even as she responded to questions from media operatives recently. In speaking to the prevailing situation of child abuse, the Minister intimated her concern that its prevalence is an issue of growing concern to her. “From time to time you read in the press about a report of children being left alone,” recounted the Minister as she pointed out that Government cannot work in isolation to address the various forms of abuse that occur. “It is always said that ‘oh Government is not doing enough’ but I want to say to members of communities; that you live in that community and whilst Government is responsible for formulating policies to protect our people, we all have to be responsible for paying attention to what happens within our respective communities,” asserted the Minister.

Human Services Minister, Jennifer Webster Webster is therefore optimistic that community leaders, especially religious leaders, could play a crucial role in helping to raise awareness about the role of the community in helping to protect its children. “The pastor, the Imam and the pandit have to, in their religious teachings, try to speak to their congregations, because it is important that we get the message out there that sexual violence, domestic violence and personal violence is everybody’s

business, and if you are aware of something that is going on within your community you need to report it,” the Minister stressed. She went on to note that oftentimes people are very much aware of various forms of abuse being meted out to children within their communities, yet no one opts to take action. She lamented the fact too that people with knowledge sometimes only come forward with their information after something serious happens. “Then you hear ‘oh the father was interfering with this child all the time’ or ‘he was beating his wife all the time’.” Webster said that instead of withholding information that could potentially help to save a life or even lives, persons should seek to be their brothers and sisters’ keepers and not see the cases of abuse in isolation. Persons, according to her, should refrain from viewing any form of abuse as “not a matter of our own personal concern, but we should pay attention because today it might be me and tomorrow it might be you.”

Veteran singer Delma Lynch passes away Delma Lynch was an astute woman with a melodious voice who sang her way into the hearts of many who heard her. She spent almost her entire adult life as a singer and maintained a good reputation during those years. But Lynch is no more. The veteran singer, 67, passed away early yesterday morning. Her daughter, Audrey Paul, confirmed the news, and informed this publication that her mother had three other children, two of whom reside overseas. Kaieteur News understands that she also leaves to mourn 10 grandchildren. Friends and colleagues of the veteran musician spoke highly of her contributions. Musician and movie producer, Bonny Alves said that he had the “distinct privilege” of working with Lynch on several projects including two movies – ‘The Will To Live’ and ‘Right Choices’. He said that he recorded two songs of Lynch’s at Ssignal Studio — 50/50 Love and Start Over —and also did music videos for these songs. “We will certainly miss her.” Leader of the Yoruba Singers, Eze Rockcliffe told Kaieteur News that he knew of Lynch since the early

Delma Lynch 1960s, during which time he was in High School. He said that at that time Lynch and Rita Forrester were “the talk of the town” and conversations were about which could sing best. Rockcliffe said that he became friends with Lynch in 1980 after he brought her out of retirement to perform at the ‘Yoruba and Friends in Concert’ at the then Friends Night Club. He said that in 1982 he took Lynch to the United States of America when Yoruba Singers went on its first tour. The musician said that Pamela Maynard‘, Czerina Ali, Otis Holder and Pat Thompson, all of whom are now dead, also went on that tour as auxiliary members

of the Yoruba Singers after being part of the Yoruba and Friends concert. Rockcliffe said that as the friendship grew stronger, he was privileged to have Lynch accompany him and the Yoruba Singers on three other tours. He said that by 1983 Lynch became so generous that she sewed free costumes for Yoruba Members for them

to wear during a performance at Madison Square Garden. Rockcliffe described Lunch as an excellent singer, who was particularly fond of doing cover performances of songs originally done by Gladys Knights, Miriam Makeba, Bob Marley, Carlene Davis and Bette Midler. The musician said that he visited Lynch last Tuesday “she held my hand throughout the visit and didn’t want me to leave.” He said, on behalf of the Yoruba Singers, that she will definitely be missed, “we had great moments together in the field of show business. Delma was a good mother, friend and singer. She was charming and was always able to woo the crowd whenever she stepped on stage.” Kaieteur News understands that Lynch worked with the Mischievous Guys band and toured Trinidad and Tobago with the Rhythmaires. She also performed with the Jazz Crusaders.

Father of two stabbed to death at Arakaka Police at Port Kaituma have arrested a man known as “Desmond” after a miner was fatally stabbed to death on Monday. A police report stated that around 01:00hrs, on Monday September 1, Glendon Cox, 46, of Aberdeen on the Essequibo Coast, was involved in an argument with a man at Four Miles, Arakaka, North West District, during which he was fatally stabbed. The report indicated that a suspect has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with investigation. Esther Cox, the dead man’s sister, said she last spoke with her brother, who was the father of two, on Sunday last. The bereaved woman said her brother called her on Sunday and was telling her how much he loved her.”My brother told me he loved me three times,” the woman reflected tearfully. Cox explained that her brother, whom she described as “a loving man” came out of the interior almost four months ago and she learnt that he had been experiencing some difficulties with the family members of a young Pomeroon miner who recently lost his life in an accident at Arakaka. The woman said she learnt of her brother’s death by way of a nephew who had called to ask, if she had heard the news about Cox’s death.

DEAD: Glendon Cox “Auntie Esther did you hear what happened to “Zamma”, he just get stab.” Esther Cox said that she was in denial at first since she informed her nephew that she had spoken to her brother just moments before. She said her daughter traveled to the interior and has since identified her uncle’s body. The woman said her daughter has since related to her that her uncle was imbibing at a shop at Arakaka and was approached by a man, and upon leaving the shop, the man, who police has since arrested, proceeded to give him a “friendly hug”. The woman said after her brother realized that he had been stabbed by the man, he collapsed and eventually succumbed. She said urgent efforts are being made to transport her brother’s body out of the interior, since ice needed to preserve the body, is said to be scarce in that area.

Entrepreneurial women of the St Cuthbert’s Mission craft centre and representatives of the ‘S-4 Foundation’ participated in a technology seminar over the weekend at STARR Computers Inc.’s head office at 59 Brickdam. The seminar saw presentations by President of Starr Computers Inc., Michael Mohan; General Manager Raymond Majeed, Sales Manager Penny Francis and Executive Director of S-4 Foundation Imarah Radix. Mohan related that technology defines the era and over the years numerous innovations—including evershrinking computers, mobile phones, and alternative energies—have been introduced in homes and workplaces, changing the way persons live, work, and do business. He explained that the potential to advance women economically may be the most exciting transformative

President of Starr Computers Inc., Michael Mohan explains the transformative feature of technology to the participants. feature of technology. “Empowering women and improving the efficiency of their work is critical for reducing poverty. Mounting evidence confirms that women’s improved economic status produces many

positive economic and welfare outcomes for children, families, and societies. Thus, the initiative of STARR Computers to host the seminar that is one of many sessions the company has been a part of,” Mohan

$9.2B in EU support over next... (From page 6) our joint work for the next seven years and will allow us to move ahead with the preparations of the concrete projects and programmes.” The official said that for the EU, it is essential that its programmes are drawn up in close cooperation with the partnering countries, based on governments’ own policies and strategies and reflecting their stated needs. “This is how we ensure that programming documents really support areas where the EU can add value.” The National Indicative Programmes represent an important step in the program-

ming of EU aid. EU Member States agreed in 2013 for the overall amount for development cooperation that will be channeled to 78 ACP countries through the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) during the financing period 2014-2020 – a total amount Euro 30.5 billion. EU stressed that the National Indicative Programmes define the strategy and priorities for its aid in each particular country. “These preparations are done in close cooperation with the partner countries so as to ensure that NIPs support national priorities and reflect the local context. This is in line with the EU’s vision for future

development cooperation, the “Agenda for Change”, which calls for resources to be targeted where they are most needed and can be the most effective.” Work on preparing concrete projects and programmes have also started in all countries. Guyana has been benefitting from EU’s assistance for several years now, with assistance also to help the sugar industry recover from the loss of its preferential market there and phased price cuts that amounted to almost 37 per cent. In the last EDF, some Euro 55.4M had been committed to Guyana.

Poverty at its peak in indigenous... (From page 16) received from villagers, the monies being allocated were being misused. As such, they (APNU) wanted a clear plan of how the money was being spent. Rohee however, “rubbished” the opposition’s pronouncement. APNU Member of Parliament Renita Williams had told the media that as a representative of Amerindians, specifically those in Region 1, Barima-Waini, “I can say my brothers and sisters are aggrieved at the way the government handled their concerns.” She was at the time seeking to defend the cuts made by the combined opposition and drew reference to the fact that a supplementary paper was tabled in the National Assembly in December 2013, where the sum of $500M was approved towards Amerindian Development.

According to Williams, the Opposition at the time was reluctant to approve the sum, since only nineteen days remained in 2013 at the time when the vote was taken. She noted that Amerindians generally are affected by the fact that their land demarcation and entitlement matters are not properly addressed by the administration. Williams said that the Government continues to make promises to Amerindians regarding the settlement of the matters, “however, what we frequently see is that little or no attention is paid afterwards.” The MP claimed that the government, through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, mobilized Amerindians from Regions One and Nine to protest against the combined opposition, specifically targeting Amerindians in the

Opposition, namely Dr. George Norton, Dawn Hastings and Sydney Allicock of APNU; and Valerie GarridoLowe and June Marcello of the Alliance For Change, for the disapproval of the funds towards Amerindian Development. Williams had told the media, “I am appealing to my Amerindian community leaders in all the regions in Guyana, the time has come when we as a people, with over 10 per cent of the population, should stand up to the PPP/C government and tell them that enough is enough…The time for political gaming with Amerindians should cease.” Williams is adamant that Amerindians must be able to decide what is best for themselves and their communities. “The time for handouts is over…Amerindians deserve a decent and good life.”

said. Underscoring that technology is an engine for economic growth; he declared that the path to success is within the technological sphere. General Manager Raymond Majeed opined that improving women’s access to technology has the potential to spur their economic advancement and stimulate broader economic growth. Regrettably, he said, technology has been underused in unlocking women’s economic opportunities. “The gender divide is evident in both traditional and modern technologies.” Sales Manager Penny Francis discussed with the group the benefits of technology and using social media such as facebook and email to promote their craft and various products. She related that one of the major benefits of advertising on a social networking site is that advertisers can take advantage of the users’

demographic information and target their ads appropriately. As such, social media targeting makes it possible for users to see advertisements that might actually interest them. S-4 Foundation’s Imarah Radix emphasized that her organization focuses on women’s education and development, and the seminar was vital for women to realize their place in an Information Technologydriven world. “The women found the workshop very interesting and it opened their eyes to new opportunities when it comes to small businesses and using technology to advance their development. “Women need to know what it is they are capable of, since often they doubt themselves when it comes to using technology as there are more men than women in the ICT sector. We need to teach more women and empower them with the skills to use technology in their business and their daily lives.”

YCG to dispatch 50 volunteer... (From page 22) individualised attention on how to improve.” “With individualised coaching our volunteer teachers’ teaching skills will be improved and we expect that their ethics will improve as well,” said an optimistic Nicholson. In emphasising the importance of the volunteer teachers’ programme, he underscored that the venture is not only seen as an asset to the nation, but it is also an asset to young people in Guyana. Nicholson is hopeful that through volunteerism “young people can seize opportunities to develop themselves and become leaders in their own communities.” He qualified his argument by pointing out that many past volunteer teachers have become leaders in the places in which they live and work and some have even used the volunteer teaching experience as a means of getting the skills they need to organise and mobilise their communities. Moreover, Nicholson insisted that volunteerism can easily serve as a stepping stone for persons who are desirous of getting into a fulltime teaching career.

Caribbean rights advocate tells SIDS conference it’s time to re-think strategies APIA, Samoa - CMC – Prominent Caribbean rights advocate, Anande TrotmanJoseph, says there is need to “domesticate” international law so as to strengthen measures aimed at ensuring equality, opportunities and empowerment for women. “SIDS requires integrated and inclusive approaches as we enter upon a new paradigm for development, built upon the foundations of international human rights, legal frameworks achieved,” Mrs. Trotman-Joseph told the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) yesterday. “We must consolidate for the future. Therefore, it is important that we domesticate these international law sand strengthen domestic legal frameworks responsive to women’s equality, opportunities and empowerment,” said Mrs. Trotman-Joseph, an attorney and the Caribbean Representative for UNWomen Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. She told the conference that it is important for small islands to accept that there is a need for a new partnerships framed around the principles and building blocks of the SIDS and sustainable goals, of the post 2015 development

Anande Trotman-Joseph processes. “SIDS partnerships about which we speak already has a wealth of best practice experiences: negotiating strength of the private and multilateral sectors, the resilience principles of agricultural and disaster sectors,” she said. “it’s time for “Joined up thinking”’ as we march forward to realize the promise of Beijing…the access to justice, realisation of sexual and reproductive health, the end of violence against women and children, the achievement of a critical mass of women in leadership and public life, the greening of our economies and our very ways of life. “We must spread the gospel of women’s

integration into sustainable development paradigms,” said the former chairperson of the Grenada National Coalition on the Rights of the Child. The conference provides an opportunity to highlight the significant vulnerabilities facing SIDS face while also discussing the progress made by these islands in addressing global issues such as climate change, access to sustainable energy and environmental degradation. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said “we are here to seek a renewed commitment to small island developing states by focusing on practical actions and durable partnerships”. The outcome document, named “Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action – or SAMOA Pathway” – was agreed by member states earlier this year. In the 124 points of the SAMOA Pathway, countries agree to strengthen their support for small island developing states. An official UN release said that these newly established partnerships have the potential to mobilize at least US$625 million, while financial commitments from existing partnerships for the period beyond 2014 amount to US$1.28 billion.

St Vincent prime minister ‘reluctantly’ defends IMF lending policies BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - CMC – St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has defended the new attitude of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to developing countries even as he acknowledged he is still not fully satisfied with its lending policies. Gonsalves, called in to the television programme “Time to Face the Facts” that was aired on the Barbados-based CARIBVISION, the television arm of the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Sunday night. The programme hosted by the St. Vincent-based journalist, Jerry George, looked at the role of the IMF in the Caribbean. Gonsalves recalled that St. Vincent and the Grenadines had benefitted from an US$6.4 million loan given by the Washingtonbased financial institution “especially in relation to

Dr. Ralph Gonsalves balance of payments difficulties which arose out of consequence of the December 2013 natural disaster. “The IMF of today is a somewhat different IMF than hitherto in terms of the manner in which it conducts its business and there is clearly an influence of new persons …but we still have somewhere to go,” he told

television viewers. He said the IMF “does not force any government to do something” and that Caribbean countries shortly after gaining political independence from Britain joined the IMF and other international institutions. The chief of the Caribbean Division, Western Hemisphere at the IMF headquarters, Trevor Alleyne, one of the panellists on the television programme, agreed with Gonsalves that were many other types of IMF programmes that benefitted the region, saying “these are facilities that provide to countries as the prime minister mentioned hit by exogenous shocks, most typically things like natural disasters which are going to in a sense affect their ability to gain foreign exchange and create b a l a n c e of payments difficulties. “These types of loans as he said do not carry conditionalities,” he said.

Martelly prepared to meet with Haiti’s opposition politicians PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti CMC – President Michel Martelly says he is prepared to meet with opposition legislators who are accused of delaying plans for holding legislative and municipal elections by the end of this year. The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) last week adopted a declaration calling on the three branches of government in Haiti to comply with the agreement, known as El Rancho, for the polls to be held in October. “Unfortunately this agreement is now facing great difficulties; you supported us, encouraged all actors to respect their commitments, and today I come to seek the solidarity of the OAS and its member states regarding a situation facing our nation, because we know that the well-being of Haiti’s democracy must be a priority for the region,” said Haiti’s OAS Permanent Representative Edmond Bocchit. Lucien Jura, the spokesman for President Martelly said the head of state

had responded positively to a letter from Senator Simon Dieuseul Desras, President of the Senate, asking that he meet with the opposition legislators to discuss the matter. The spokesman said President Martelly had invited the President of the Senate and members of the so called G for the discussions on Monday. “President Martelly is ready to meet on Monday the president of the senate and the six senators

who have been reluctant to help pass the amendments,” he said. But the meeting failed to materialise after Senator Desras indicated that the six opposition legislators said they were unable to attend. Some of the G6 group have blamed President Martelly for failing to invite some opposition figures to the meeting as requested, while others argue such a meeting should not take place at the presidential palace, but at a neutral venue.

Djokovic, Murray renew rivalry in U.S. Open blockbuster Reuters - Friends and rivals since they were 11, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray renew acquaintances today in a blockbuster quarter-final match at the U.S. Open. Sixteen years after they first met in a junior competition in France, the pair is set to lock horns for the 21st time as professionals, their sixth grand slam clash but at the earliest stage of the lot. World number one Novak

Djokovic will enter the match as the favourite, having reached the last eight without dropping a set, while Murray looked back on form in beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to make the quarter-finals. Murray beat Djokovic in the 2012 U.S. Open final and in the 2013 Wimbledon final and despite his form, the Serb is well aware of how tough a match he faces. The pair are the only two men to have

reached at least the quarterfinals of all four grand slams this year. Murray said there were unlikely to be many surprises between the two but in his column with the New York Times, he said the weather could be significant, a reference, perhaps, to the 2012 final when he coped better with the wind than Djokovic. Japan’s Kei Nishikori will be hoping to rebound from

his marathon win in the previous round, which equalled the latest ever U.S. Open finish of 2:26 a.m. ET, when he takes on third seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland. Women’s top seed Serena Williams plays Italy’s 11th seed Flavia Pennetta for a place in the semi-finals while Victoria Azarenka, the runnerup in each of the past two years, faces Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova.

Hingis, is a friend and practice partner, whose mother Melanie Molitor coaches the upand-coming Swiss player. The teenager had shown impressive composure in her run to the quarters, but the precision brilliance of Peng frustrated her. Peng will play either former world number one Caroline Wozniacki, the 10th seed from Denmark, or Italian 13th seed Sara Errani in the semi-finals. Top-seeded two-time defending champion Serena Williams used a medical timeout to have her right foot and ankle re-taped during the second set of her quarter-final doubles match against Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Williams, playing with her sister Venus, appeared to be all right after timeout but it proved to be a disappointing performance. The fourth-seeded Russians went on to win 7-6 (5) 6-4, advancing to the semi-finals after Serena double-faulted on the last two points of the match.

Letters to the Editor

YBG is the manservant of the Director of Sport DEAR EDITOR, First, let me congratulate you on the excellent article you carried on Thursday, August 28, 2014, captioned ‘GABF strong stance needs support’ written by Mr. Edison Jefford; the piece captured both our efforts and our plight. Mr. Editor, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link; the last paragraph of the article in your newspaper referenced our fight to remain relevant, and as bothersome as the statement is – it is a fact. (Chris) Bowman of YBG (Youth Basketball Guyana) on August 30, 2014 unsuccessfully tried to erase the points made by Mr. Jefford in his article in the Guyana Times. He then went on to raise queries about ‘Camp Pass it On’ that took place in Istanbul, Turkey from August 11-17. Mr. Editor, Please note the following: Camp Pass it On is a Camp held in Turkey and hosted by the Turkish Basketball Federation to promote basketball for Under14 kids and a Coach Under the age of 35; (b) It is a global event that lasts approximately one week with over 75 participating countries, with each country sending three persons; (c) Regarding the nature of the event - here is an extract from the Turkish Basketball Federation: “We have countless activities planned, including basketball practices, tournaments, teambuilding activities, Istanbul sightseeing, planting trees and flowers in the PASS IT ON Garden, participating in a Turkey 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women promotional video, and many other surprises”. (d) The main reason Guyana didn’t send a team to Turkey was because Mr. Junior Hercules was unable to obtain leave from his employer to attend the Camp. Hercules was the Manager for Guyana’s 2014 CBC (Caribbean Basketball

Confederation) Men’s team, which had just returned from Tortola, British Virgin Islands at the time. (e) Funding was also a challenge as we had drained our resources to fund the Guyana’s Men & Women’s Teams participation in the 2014 CBC Championship. I communicated with Chris Bowman on or before August 4th, 2014, specifically to assist with funding for Stanton Rose’s airfare to Turkey and he said in principle the YBG had no problem in assisting Stanton. Earlier in the year, Bowman had proposed Stanton as an ideal youth for Camp Pass it On - we in the GABF accepted the merit of the recommendation. All was well and good - until we did not have a chaperon to accompany the minors, a chaperon’s presence is required for the minors to attend. Mr. Editor it is important that you know these facts about YBG: Youth Basketball Guyana Inc. was incorporated on January 14th, 2013 (though its National Schools’ Basketball Festival is nearly a decade old) this should be a matter of concern for YBG sponsors. The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) is the only sports Federation in Guyana that has an entity trying to compete with the Associations/Federations goals and objectives. Section 4 of Article 1 of the YBG Articles of Incorporation states: the purpose of YBG shall be to organise, promote, regulate and operate an independent youth basketball programme in Guyana. At a minimum, YBG shall operate programmes for mini basketball, high school basketball, youth basketball, elite basketball and coaches and referees development on a year- round basis. Clearly YBG is a parasitic organisation that is seeking to perform the mandate given by FIBA to the GABF.

The de facto Minister of Sport, Neil Kumar has found an ideal lackey in the form of the Bowman led YBG, which plays into Kumar’s efforts to weaken the leadership of the GABF, starting with Colonel Godwin McPherson, continuing with Mr. David Patterson and now these interferences with the present administration of the Federation. The Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Commission should not be supporting the YBG instead of GABF. None of the aforementioned Presidents of the GABF were willing to be soup-drinkers to Kumar’s idiotic behaviour, thus the uphill struggle to keep the GABF relevant and effective over the past several years continues. With the Ministry of Sports actively trying to undermine basketball falling under the banner of the GABF, it sends the wrong message to the business community and basketball stakeholders in general while the same Ministry positively promotes YBG; a one-man show that is happy to kowtow, accommodate and benefit from whatever excesses Kumar is willing to persist in promoting. Over the years YBG has generally failed to develop and spread youth basketball in Guyana, even with large and generous sponsors, we have empty venues when games are played; no inter-school girls basketball over the last three years and limited school participation, even though YBG has been praising itself for their involvement in basketball since 2007. In paraphrasing Shakespeare, I look forward to the day when the GABF no longer has to suffer the slings and arrows of the outrageous ‘Director of Sport’ and his manservant in the form of YBG. Respectfully, Nigel Hinds GABF President

Martin wins stage, Contador takes overall lead

AFP - Two-time Tour of Spain winner Alberto Contador took the overall lead in this year’s edition yesterday as German Tony Martin won the 10th stage, a 36.7-kilometre time-trial. Contador, 31 and who finished fourth, 39 seconds slower than triple time-trial

world champion Martin, replaced Colombian rider Nairo Quintana in the overall leader’s red jersey. For Contador it represents quite a comeback after, like Chris Froome, he failed to finish the Tour de France because of injury, in his case a broken tibia. Quintana, who took a three-second lead on

Sunday, came to grief when he fell after a dozen kilometres, as he was bending down to fiddle with his right shoe, and lost more than three minutes to Contador. Quintana, bidding for a second Grand Tour win this season having won the Tour (Continued on page 27)

Re: FIFA’s Intervention in Local Football Long Overdue DEAR EDITOR, I share similar sentiments expressed by your Sports Journalist, Rawle Welch in the publication of his article captioned “FIFA should appoint Normalization Committee to rescue Guyana’s Football, “ K.N: 31.08.14. Moreover, when it’s taken into serious consideration that in all three instances of Congresses held under the auspices of the GFF which had representatives of FIFA/ CONCACAF present; Sadly, the supposedly distinguished and learned gentlemen failed to intervene in electoral malpractices outlined by a few of Matthias’ challengers. So, factually and in actuality, the “golden silence” emanating from the esteemed gentleman of FIFA/ CONCACAF, automatically would have transformed, into disgruntlement among detractors of Matthias and quite rightfully so! Its common knowledge that FIFA’s Statutes and the Federation’s Constitution were violated i.e. why was there no pronouncement upon eligible voters at the Electoral Congress, along with the voting rights of provisional members! Strange indeed, that in the latter two instances of “walkouts by representatives of legitimate affiliates, no attempt whatsoever of mediation was made”. Or was there any explanation offered, aided by written circumstantial and supportive evidence in accordance to FIFA Statutes! Meanwhile, on a point of observation, which is to the best of my

knowledge, no individual in Guyana owns a football club. This is primarily due to the fact that the sport locally, is at an amateur status. And the modalities pertaining to club ownership, in accordance with the statues of FIFA, as it relates to Guyana, places two clubs at a significant disadvantage over all the others, as salaries/ wages are paid to a core of senior players; coaching and managerial staff. As such the lure of a monthly paycheck over-rides the development of youngsters among their fellow peers at the age-limit level. Editor, a pertinent point that Mr. Welch has overlooked is the “gridlock” that is continuously unfolding among the Executive of the GFF. Wherein, the resignation and suspension (sic) of Vice Presidents have left the President, “caught between a rock and a hard place” in relation to convening a meeting. While decision making /implementation would also be affected, since all it needs is one member’s absence and a quorum can’t be had. The end result no meeting can be convened! Despite all of this, compromise is a lost word/term in the vocabulary of the incumbent! As it relates to the selection of the provisional squad comprising of 30 players that was finally broken down to 18, it leaves much to be desired. A two weeks period of training; encampment and a few practice matches against questionable opponents remains nothing meaningful to measure progress. Once

again I must agree with the journalist, “the team has to be one of the poorest assembled to represent Guyana in decades”. And may, I add it’s the only time in decades a squad is released publicly, with no mention of the player’s respective clubs! With Walter Moore being the only overseas based player, can the GFF seriously expect to achieve maximum results, when it’s taken into serious consideration that all the other participants are calling up numerous overseas based players! And please let it be known that rebuilding cannot be derived within four years, with 19-20 year-old players many of whom never had the privilege of playing adequate age limit competitive football, domestically or nationally. Walter Moore, who started his career at GFC, before moving to Fruta Conquerors, was exposed to coaching methodologies under the tutelage of the late Peter Lashley and subsequently Deryck Whyte. The truth about it is that Mr. Denzil “Hunky Brains” Thompson doesn’t have it indepth to devise any long term development coaching plan, since if this was so, GDF with all the facilities at their disposal would have had a cabinet overflowing with winners’ trophies. Rather his appointment as Head Coach, debunks any challenge posed by the overseas based and the experienced players locally, which may cause some degree of embarrassment to the GFF. Respectfully yours, Lester Sealey

Reuters - A long measure of grand slam patience paid off for Peng Shuai of China, who reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Open yesterday by routing Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-1 in the Flushing Meadows heat. Peng, 28, delivered a master lesson to the 17-yearold Bencic in an unlikely quarter-final between unseeded players, winning the groundstroke rallies and unleashing pinpoint passing shot winners after luring the Swiss to the net with short balls. After 2013 junior world number one Bencic netted a

backhand for her 19th unforced error on the first match point of the 64-minute clash, Peng pumped her fist in exaltation, but later was at a loss of words. Asked about reaching her first grand slam singles semifinal in her 37th attempt in a major, an emotional Peng took a few moments to collect herself. “This is amazing time for me,” said Peng, ranked world number one in doubles, but whose best singles result in 36 previous slams was to the fourth round. “A lot of tennis. It’s a long time, the career. It’s tough sometimes. I’m thinking to give up and

stop play because I don’t know if I can make it or not.” Peng has won 16 doubles titles, most recently claiming the French Open title with Hsieh Su-wei, but has yet to win a tour singles title. Peng and Bencic both carved out surprising paths to the quarter-finals. The 39th-ranked Chinese rattled off three impressive upsets in a row from the second round, ousting fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 28th seed Roberta Vinci and 14th-seeded Lucie Safarova.Big-hitting Bencic, last (Continued on page 27)

India thrash England to win series India sent England to a humiliating nine-wicket defeat to win the fourth oneday international at Edgbaston and clinch the five-match series 3-0. Set only 207 to win, Ajinkya Rahane made 106 and Shikhar Dhawan 97 not out as India won with 117 balls to spare. England never recovered from slumping to 23-3 after being asked to bat. Only Moeen Ali, who made 67 from 52 deliveries, showed any sort of fluency and England’s 206 all out always looked way short of being competitive. T h r e e i n e p t performances have sent Alastair Cook’s side to defeat in their final home series before the World Cup, with seven matches in Sri Lanka and a tri-series against Australia and India to come before the tournament begins on February 14. Cook reacted angrily to former off-spinner Graeme Swann’s suggestion that England cannot win the World Cup - claims that came before a ball was bowled in this series - but results have only supported Swann’s theory. This latest dismal display saw the majority of E n g l a n d ’s b a t s m e n incapable of scoring runs when faced with accurate, but not devastating, bowling, while the home attack was then decimated by Rahane and Dhawan. It was only the brilliance of Moeen that gave England any crumb of comfort, as the lefthander’s confidence and aggression provided his

Ajinkya Rahane led India’s charge in the chase team-mates with a lesson in limited-overs run-scoring. In the side for James Tredwell as one of three changes - Gary Ballance and Harry Gurney also replaced Ian Bell and Ben Stokes - Moeen arrived at the crease with the score at 114-5 and dragged England towards respectability. Whereas the rest of England’s middle order were rendered shotless against India’s trio of slow bowlers, Moeen was prepared to use his feet in hitting down the ground and square of the wicket for three sixes. Rahane and Dhawan set about the chase in style, taking only four singles from the first four overs, the opening pair then sprung into life, firstly with orthodox strokes, then some brutal hitting. Strong through midwicket and down the

ground, both cleared the ropes regularly. Rahane took James Anderson, Steven Finn and Moeen for maximums, with Dhawan doing the same to Gurney and Chris Woakes, whose four overs cost 40 runs. By the end, it was barely a contest, as Rahane and Dhawan scored all around the wicket at will. Rahane completed his maiden ODI hundred from 96 balls, before surprisingly guiding a Gurney full toss to Cook at cover. It was left to Virat Kohli to accompany Dhawan, who won the match with another six, as India showed Cook’s men just how far away they are from succeeding them as World Cup winners. India 212 for 1 (Rahane 106, Dhawan 97*) beat England 206 (Moeen 67, Shami 3-28, Bhuvneshwar 2-14) by nine wickets.

Alonso frustrated and bored, but staying at Ferrari Reuters - Fernando Alonso is not relishing his racing with Ferrari this year and has little hope of success at this week’s Italian Grand Prix, but he has rejected persistent speculation that he is set to move teams next year. The Spaniard, a twotime world champion, said that despite his frustrations with the Italian team, he was not thinking of leaving for former team McLaren. In an interview with Sky Sports News, he ruled out a switch to a rival outfit despite, he said, finding it “boring to drive” his car this season. “It’s not my intention at

the moment to move,” he said. “I want to win for Ferrari. I want to win here and finish the job that we started some years ago.” Alonso has often looked frustrated this year as runaway leaders Mercedes have dominated the championship with German Nico Rosberg and Briton Lewis Hamilton locked in a tense duel for the drivers’ title. “Our season has been frustrating because we had high hopes with this year’s new regulations and, starting from zero with all the other teams, we thought we could have an advantage with all

our facilities and input from everybody,” said Alonso. “But we have found ourselves not in the right position and not competitive. “We are further away from the leaders than during any other season this year, we are sometimes oneand-a-half seconds away from Mercedes.” He added that it was a “tough year” for Ferrari and F1. “First, because we are not competitive and also because it is quite boring to drive the car... It is too slow and too heavy and we are not able to have the noise that we used to enjoy.”

Speed Week to highlight Stag Beer ‘West Side’ 5-a-side November CMRA Meet football reach quarter final stage

CMRA Chairman Ray Rahaman (2nd right) and GMR&SC President John Carpenter (2nd left) seen at a recent press briefing. The Committee set up by the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) to initiate plans to host the third leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Association (CMRA) has begun its work to ensure that they meet the required standard for a successful Meet. Recently, during a briefing to report on the six-man contingent that represented Guyana at the second leg of the Series at Wallerfield in Trinidad and Tobago, Chairman of the CMRA Ray Rahaman along with GMR&SC President John Carpenter gave a brief synopsis on some of the plans for the upcoming event scheduled to be held on November 16, at the South Dakota Circuit. Rahaman speaking at the briefing said that the Committee will be targeting some 15-20,000 fans from all across the Diaspora and beyond so they’ve started an a g g r e s s i v e a n d comprehensive campaign that should guarantee a record attendance at the Meet which is anticipated to attract all the top

drivers in the Caribbean and those that usually come in from North America. The CMRA Chairman added that it is imperative that all the local representatives for Guyana take to the starting grid so that what obtained in Barbados and Tr i n i d a d a n d To b a g o where the hosts were fully subscribed in every division is continued to allow Guyana to maximise its chances of winning the country title and possibly the individual crown as well. “We must be able to go to Jamaica who will host the final leg with a handy lead and this could only be possible if we get all our competitors on the grid in an effort to secure valuable points.” Rahaman disclosed that the Committee had reviewed past Meets that are held in November and while they’ve constantly i m p r o v e d t h e general feedback from the fans indicate that many were looking for more activities over a longer period. “Many of the fans had asked us (Organisers) to

insert a week of fun activities into the package so that they could have entertainment whilst waiting for race day,” Rahaman informed. This week of activities he said will start the Wednesday before race day and last until Tuesday with Parc Rayne being the designated location for the Village. Carpenter for his part urged all lovers of the sport to come out and support the Guyanese competitors as they seek to win the Caribbean title. Among those anticipated to be in a t t e n d a n c e a r e representatives from the FIA, world governing body for motor sport and those from the sponsors as well. Meanwhile, Guyana’s Kristian Jeffrey leads the CMRA individual points standing with 85 points and he is followed by Danny Persaud who is 11 adrift, while another Guyanese Paul Vieira has 43. In the Country standings, T&T leads on 314 followed by Barbados with 300, Guyana in third on 297 and Jamaica in the cellar on 151.

International teams to play record nine NBA preseason games Reuters - Three top international teams will visit the United States and Canada for a combined nine preseason games against nine National Basketball Association teams this October, the league said yesterday. The games open with reigning Euroleague champion Maccabi Tel Aviv taking on LeBron James and the hosting Cleveland Cavaliers on October 5 followed by a visit to the Brooklyn Nets two days

later. Flamengo, which plays its home games in Rio de Janeiro and won the 2014 FIBA Americas League championship, will visit the Phoenix Suns on October 8, Orlando Magic on October 15 and Memphis Grizzlies on October 17. Reigning Super League runner-up Maccabi Haifa, which plays its home games in Israel, will visit the Washington Wizards on October 15, followed by a

game at the Portland Trail Blazers on October 17 and a game versus the Sacramento Kings one day later before capping its trip on October 22 against the Toronto Raptors. The nine games are the most ever played by international teams on North American soil in one preseason and complement the NBA’s Global Games schedule that includes a regular season game in London and Mexico City.

Tonight, eight teams will compete but only four will progress as semi finals spots in the Ansa McAl/Stag Beer ‘West Side’ 5-a-side football tournament will be at stake. The quarter final matches this evening at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac will see the opening clash between one of the tournament’s two undefeated teams; New Road Eagles coming up against Broad Street, the lone City side left in the competition. Even though they played undefeated, New Road Eagles have not really impressed the masses unlike their foes and opponents tonight. Broad Street seems sturdy and seasoned to this format of football and can very well clip the undefeated New Road Eagles.

It will be interesting to see if Showstoppers can create an upset when they clash with pre-tournament favourites Tuschen Up-TopYouths in game two. Behind Devon Millington and the entertaining John ‘Brown Boy’ Waldron, the side established themselves as the ‘team to beat’ in this inaugural tournament. The Uitvlugt and Stewartville Gunners game will ignite a rivalry that’s

beyond football itself. Stewartville never failed to impress and have silently planted themselves as one the teams to watch for in the tournament. Neighbours Uitvlugt on the other hand, featuring the ‘Bobb brothers’ will do their best to ensure that they remain in the money hunt but its anticipated that it will be the biggest game of the evening. Vergenoegen All-Stars, the tournament’s other undefeated team and De Kendren Village will match skills in the night’s final game. Both sides have made it this far while establishing themselves as legitimate contenders for the top prize. The semi-finals are set Friday with the tournament curtains coming down on Sunday at the saem venue.

Hope U-20 Football final

Monedderlust defeats NAUFC on penalty kicks Monnederlust FC (MFC) defeated New Amsterdam United FC (NAUFC) in sudden death penalty kicks, after the game ended in a 2-2 stalemate, to claim the 2nd Annual Hope Memorial U 2 0 F o o t b a l l Competition, at the Burnham Park, New Amsterdam, Sunday evening last. The match was a keenly contested affair with MFC dominating the first half with their opponents emulating their e ff o r t s i n t h e s e c o n d session. Monnederlust started aggressively and netted in the 2nd minute, compliments of a stinging shot off the boot of Atlyn Brown. Despite good defensive tactics exhibited by NAUFC, the visitors went ahead 2-0 after Kevin Layne tucked a soft shot into the back of the nets. That was the only other success and the teams went in at the intermission with the score unchanged. NAUFC opened their account 14 minutes after the resumption, compliments of a Howard Smith success which seemed to bolster the spirits of the home team. They upped the ante but the opposition defended staunchly, preserving their

slim 1-0 lead. A s t h e g a m e progressed and with Monnederlust enjoying a one goal advantage, the opposition earned a corner kick and the ensuing strike hit the crossbar before rebounding into play for the lurking Gladstone Lyte to convert and equalize the situation. Bad light at the end of regulation time forced the game straight into penalty kicks and Monnederlust eventually prevailed. The winners and runners-up received trophies from President of the Hope Football Club, Mr. Mac Adams while Kevin Layne of Monnederlust received $20,000 after being adjudged the Most Valuable Player. His teammate, Selwyn

Jack, collected $15,000 for being the best goalkeeper while Akeem Watts won the prize for the b e s t m i d f i e l d e r. B o t h teams had had earned the right to compete in the finals after registering impressive victories in their semi finals encounters; NAUFC defeated Rosignol United 41 while Monedderlust humiliated Hope Football Club 4-0. The tournament was organized by the Hope Memorial Foundation in memory of the late Wilbur “Hopey” Hope a former national footballer, referee and coach. Hope, a former resident of Tucber Park, New Amsterdam suffered from an acute heart condition and passed away at the 33 years old.

Guyana’s men team cop 3hand title; females take third

We Are #1! The victorious Guyana Men’s team with their trophies A sterling performance by the Guyana male threehand team in the sixth and final round earned them first place when the World Council Dominoes Federation (WCDF) held its 16th championship from August 14-24 in the land of the ‘Flying Fish’, Barbados. Although the female team won their final round game, they had to settle for third position as they started their final round on 10 points, two behind eventual champions Antigua & Barbuda and three behind Barbados who edged the Guyanese on sixes to take the runner-up spot. Guyana tallied 86 games to beat Anguilla on 76 and Antigua 56. The Guyanese grabbed three points from this encounter which brought them level with Barbados, but Antigua ended on 14 after gaining two points from the match. Guyana were knocked out in the semi final stages in the King and Queen segment, but placed third in the overall team championship. Guyana’s male team

comprised of Permaul, Samuels, Boston, Kirk Caesar, Errol Seymour, Gilbert Mendonca, Rawl Peters, Hubert Wright, Antonio Moti and Gladstone George. The female team was made up of Faye Joseph, Coraine Solomon-Rodney, Yonette Christmas, Diane Telford, Jillian Hyman, N a n c y To n n e r, C l a i r e Benjamin, Rita Scarder, Sheron Jerome, Sandy Welch, Andrea Green, Alverene Jaundoo, Andrea Marks, Andrea Lewis and Denese Griffith-Jacobis. They teams returned home on August 28. In an invited comment, Manager/Player Gladstone George said their main aim was to win the overall championship, but they fell short by one point. He added that both teams did well while lauding the males for their efforts.

Three wins down, Coach K’s USA still taking it one game at a time Bilbao - USA Coach Mike Krzyzewski and many of his players had their focus and imperturbability severely tested after their Group C game yesterday. Not in the game though. On the court the reigning world champions had rolled past New Zealand 98-71 for their third successive win putting themselves right at the top of the waiting list to advance to the Round of 16 in Barcelona. But off the court, it took all their cool to deal in the best way possible with questions forcing them to look beyond the Catalan capital - and at the Finals in the Spanish capital itself. Neither Coach K nor team leader James Harden would have any of it though. “We are first looking at the teams in our pool,” Krzyzewski answered when asked to look at how hosts Spain were performing in Group A. “We’ll look at them (Spain) when we have to play them. Not now,” the Duke University play-caller said quite categorically.

Harden too was succinct and simple. “We have two more games here and we have things to get into place,” offered the Houston Rockets shooting guard. “No, we don’t think about Spain right now,” said Anthony Davis, who missed a double-double by a single rebound, with 21 points and nine boards against the Tall Blacks. Davis, along with Harden, is the only other player on the USA team to have won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, where they beat Spain in the Final. Harden was pleased with the team’s performance yesterday. “We came off with some good intensity. Especially after the last game the way we struggled (against Turkey on Sunday) in the first half before picking up in the second half. Coach K emphasised how important it was to come off with intensity,” he said. “It was a good solid performance,” Krzyzewski concurred. “The intensity was excellent. We were against a different offense,

which is difficult to defend with big guys. We defended that very well,” he added. “Quite frankly, we are concentrating on the games we play here. If we (Spain and the USA) advance, we’ll watch a lot of them. But for now we are looking at the game here,” he said. The USA will finish their Group C campaign with games against the Dominican Republic today and Ukraine tomorrow. In another Group C game, Ukraine defeated Turkey 64-58. In Group D, It shaped up to be a tense game between two teams desperate to book a trip to Barcelona, but Mexico had other ideas. After leading Angola by just one point at half-time, 36-35, the FIBA Americas champions put on a 43-20 clinic to claim their first win, 79-55, and put one foot into the knockout rounds in the Catalan capital. In fact this was Mexico’s first victory in FIBA’s flagship event in more than 40 years, since an 85-84 win over Australia at the 1974 edition of the tournament.

As boxing officials searches for talented boxers

Seon Griffith is one to watch! By Michael Benjamin The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) 2014 Intermediate Boxing Championship concluded at the M&CC Municipal Centre, California Square, East Ruimveldt, Sunday evening last and the large attendance was truly a joy to behold. Of more importance was the fact that most of the boxers delivered and on several occasions the organizers were forced to halt the proceedings in between bouts whi l e requesting that the over exuberant spectators desist from encroaching the ring. Several boxers truly turned in great performances and one could have imagined the difficulties experienced by the panel tasked with selecting the best boxer. In the end, Republican pugilist, Clifton Graham, earned the nod after decisively defeating Jason Phillips in the 69kgs category. A m i dst t h e o t h e r

a c t i o n p a c k e d encounters, another fighter stood out, not only by dint of his performance that night but when it is noted that he had been away from the ring for three years and had only returned to the gym about one month prior to the tournament. That boxer is Seon Griffith, an Albouystown resident of the Forgotten Youth Foundation. He punched his way to a unanimous verdict over Jamal Eastman (RHJ), a seasoned pugilist, in the 52kgs division. The uninitiated would have never realized that Griffith had had such a lengthy sabbatical as he slugged it out with a far more seasoned Eastman to win by a close s p l i t decision. Speaking with his Coach, Sebert Blake, moments after Griffith exited the ring, I learnt of t h e r e a s o n for the sabbatical but in keeping with a

promise I made, I cannot go into detail. However, it is those details that have caused me to respect the ability, pluck and determination of this young pugilist. The win last Sunday night has improved his record to an impressive 13 fights with 11 wins and just two losses. H e dist i n c t l y remembers one of those losses to Romel Rowley of the Republican Boxing Gym and said that now he is back in the ring, he wants to avenge the loss; he cannot remember the name of the other boxer to whom he had lost. A truly humble individual, one would not immediately notice his talent; he comes over as inconsequential. His application and the eventual results of his bout last Sunday evening tell a different story and as his Coach said in summing up his future, Seon Griffith is one to watch!

DCB urges new WI selectors Oldest Test cricketer dies aged 103 to pick Chanderpaul for ODIs

Raj Singh By Sean Devers Raj Singh, President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) urged the newly installed regional cricket selectors, led by former Windies Skipper Clive Lloyd, who played at the highest level until he was 42, to revisit the situation regarding Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s continued omission from the West Indies 50-Over team. The DCB says all International teams are now preparing their teams for the ICC World Cup to be hosted in New Zealand and Australia in February/March 2015 but feels the West Indies have squandered a great opportunity here at home t o h a v e Chanderpaul included in the ODI series against Bangladesh. “In all three ODIs of the series, and in most of our previous encounters, we have been failing miserably in the top and middle order. With the absence of Samuels and Sarwan for various reasons, our middle order looks very fragile. Fortunately, Ramdin has struck a rich vein of form in the last few months but there is very little support for his efforts from the other batters. Against a lesser known attack at home, we were reduced to 34-5 until Ramdin and Pollard rescued us,” Singh said. “Young Darren Bravo has come good in one of the matches but need to step up and be more hungry and responsible for the abundance of

Clive Lloyd presents Shivnarine Chanderpaul with a memento for his 150th Test, India v West Indies, 2nd Test, Mumbai, 1st day, November 14, 2013 © BCCI natural talent that he undoubtedly possesses. The opening slots have been a disaster with Gayle not firing in most of his outings and his various partners do not inspire confidence at the top. We need some more stability in the top order and Shiv still has a few more years of cricket left in him. We at the DCB have never agreed with the decision or judgment of Otis Gibson when he opined that for Shiv to be saved for Tests and axed from ODIs,” the DCB Head continued. The 40 year-old Guyanese made his ODI debut against India in 1994 and has scored 8,778 runs at an average of 41.60 from 268 matches. He has played in five World Cups from 1999-2011 and has opened the batting with Chris Gayle in many ODIs. Chanderpaul has the third most ODI hundreds (11) among West Indies batsmen and is among only six West Indians with a 150 plus score in this format. “Most cricket knowledgeables have agreed that this was an unwise decision by Gibson and the previous WI selectors. Let us correct this mistake that we made with Shiv and provide him with possibly his final opportunity to assist the WI team to bring home the World Cup for a third time. S h i v ’s f i t n e s s h a s never been an issue with the selectors and he is

capable of being managed in a much better manner. The conditions in Australia and New Zealand are very harsh for most seasoned batters and we need all the experience that we have available to contribute to the success of our team. Shiv’s performance in ODIs as an opener has been extraordinary and would be the perfect foil for Gayle at the top of the order. West Indies have two ODI series before the World Cup, in India and South Africa and according to Singh, Chanderpaul is badly needed for these series. “Our last ODI outing i n N Z w a s a n embarrassment! How many times, if ever, have we seen someone offer to play in a practice match for another Territorial team just so that he would be match-ready for a test series?” Singh asked. “This clearly shows the attitude of Shiv to the game and we must include him in all ODIs a n d Te s t s f o r t h e remainder of his career to help nurture and inculcate those habits in the other team members,” the DCB top man concluded. The DCB Executive: Singh (President), Anand Sanasie (Vice President), Kalladeen (Treasurer), Ray Persaud (Marketing Manager), Colin Europe ( C o m p e t i t i o n s Committee Chairman), Rohan Sarjoo (PRO) and Nazimul Drepaul (Chairman of Selectors).

Former South African cricketers greet Norman Gordon on his 100th birthday, Johannesburg, August 6, 2011 © Getty Images Norman Gordon, the former South Africa fast bowler who was the world’s oldest Test cricketer, has died aged 103. Gordon played all five Tests against England in 1938-39, including the famous Timeless Test in Durban that ended in a draw despite stretching for ten days. Gordon, the first Test cricketer to have lived to the age of 100, died at his home in Johannesburg, where he has lived for over sixty years. He had spent parts of the last year in and out of hospital with renal problems but was in good health otherwise. He was renowned for his fitness and athleticism during his playing days. He bowled 92.2 eight-ball overs during that timeless Test. He could play only five Tests because his career coincided with World War II. Gordon was the last surviving Test cricketer to have played before World War II. Ali Bacher, the former CSA Chief Executive and Test player, paid tribute to

Gordon. “He always had a smile on his face,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “He had one common theme about his life: he always enjoyed the people he met, through cricket and through golf. He lived life to the full.” Gordon was an honorary life member of the Houghton Golf Club and a regular visitor there for lunches and suppers. Gordon lived in Hillbrow, close to the Johannesburg City Centre, which was a plush area in the 1970s and 1980s but had suffered neglect in the following decades. Despite the changes in the area, Gordon remained a popular figure among the residents. “When I went to visit him I asked him whether he had ever been bothered by living there or felt unsafe,” Bacher said. “He said no. He said there was only one occasion when he was bothered by someone at night but in general everybody knew him there and everybody loved him.” Bacher also recalled his memories of visiting

Gordon’s sports shop as a child and said the former fast bowler was popular with female fans. “In the 1950s, Norman owned a sports shop in Eloff Street,” Bacher said. “Every year my mother would take me there to buy a new bat. I used to look forward to those visits so much. “Norman was very goodlooking; he always had ladies after him. When I was interviewing him for SuperSport a few years ago, my mother-in-law, who is 98, fairly conservative and of very sound mind, went to my wife with a confession. She said that when she was 17 she had a crush on Gordon. So when I interviewed him I had to ask him whether he knew how popular he was with women. When I put it to him that the ladies seemed to really like him, he said, ‘Oh yes, I know.’” After his demise, another former South Africa fast bowler, Lindsay Tuckett, has become the oldest living Test cricketer.

Mexico’s Hernandez joins Real Madrid on loan Manchester, England Manchester United announced Monday that Mexico international Javier Hernandez has joined Real Madrid on loan for the remainder of the 2014/15 season. The current European champion reserved the first option to purchase the forward at the end of the initial agreement.

“I’m delighted and completely grateful to the entire institution of Real Madrid for having made the effort and I’ll give it my all,” s a i d H e r n a n d e z , 2 0 11 CONCACAF Gold Cup’s Most Valuable Player. “There is no player in the world who can say they wouldn’t like to wear this shirt or be at this club. ”For me it is a dream come true.”

Hernandez, who joined United in 2010 from Guadalajara, scored 59 goals in 154 appearances for the Reds and won two Premier League titles. He follows in the footsteps of Mexican football legend Hugo Sanchez, who enjoyed a stellar career at Real Madrid from 1985 to 1992. (CONCACAF.com)
