Why Guyana should not have accepted Republican electoral reform help “Senate Republicans block Democrats’ election bill” was the headline of the June 22 story in the BBC’s online edition.

As we reflect on this development in the highest legislative chamber in America, two questions come to mind. The first is why? And the second is this one, which has relevance for us Guyanese: why are/were these people providing electoral reform guidance for us?

Every Republican senator stayed with the party line, which led to the inevitable 50-50 deadlock, since Democrats were not going to abandon their own bill. There was no hope of proceeding further, since the filibuster rule could not be overcome, and of which more will follow. Regarding the why, we can be sympathetic with objections to absentee voting and mail-in voting, both of which opened the door to much behind the scenes tinkering and manipulating for partisan purposes. The same could be said of automatic voter registration on the basis of possession of a driver’s licence only. That needs to be rethought and revisited with steeper requirements.

We can support 15 days of early voting, but only with the tightest of vigilance and provisions for clear corrective bipartisan action should fraud come into play. This has been a norm (alleged) in Guyana. Campaign financing is always a much-disputed hot button issue, and one that needs serious and honest attention. Not what conveniently gives an upper electoral hand. Again, this is something that plagues Guyana, with questionable private sector money filling the coffers of both major parties, and which neither wish to change.

Passage of the Bill, however, could have also sounded the death knell of the Republican party’s electoral prospects with waves of newly registered and newly engaged minority voters voting. The stakes cannot be higher, with gun control, healthcare, and the environment all under the microscope and due for radical overhaul, and all dear to Republicans.

Historically, the Republican party has not been fair with the voting rights of vulnerable minority voters, with Black Americans subjected to terrible oppression for decades. So, our question stands. Why was the heavily Republican influenced IRI engaged, and relied upon, by the current government to assist this nation with electoral reform?

Republicans have not been kind to minority voters, so why these helpers? Voting obstacles, as experienced by African Americans, especially in the Deep South, and in the more broadly rebranded ‘Red States’, have alarmed Democrats and energised Republicans to keep the status quo. Republican-controlled state legislatures have moved aggressively to roll back the clock through voting rights Bills, with restrictive clauses that negatively impact minorities. Restrictive voting Bills that are clearly racially discriminatory. Hence, the question persists and would not let up. Why should Guyana be relying on a somewhat subtle and, at times, openly racist party to help with local electoral reform, where there are wars between minority peoples in major demographic segments?

The Democrats’ For the People Act sought to remove the more nettlesome provisions in current electoral processes.

Republicans in the evenly balanced Senate would have none of that. This meshes well with the position of the recently defeated Republican holder of the White House (he was cheated) and his visions (ideas of returning). Both former president and party strategists would like voting rights to be more restrictive, if only to give candidate and party a fighting chance in 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential race With all of this said, it was still a remote, if not a drop dead possibility that the Democrat-sponsored bill could not attract enough Republican votes in the Senate to overcome the 60-vote filibuster. Even two Democratic Senators, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Krysten Sinema of Arizona have signalled resistance to the elimination of the filibuster rule, which was termed, “The Biggest obstacle to Biden getting his way” (BBC April 26).

Amaila Falls: money games, contractor games, govt. games, and for Section 7 only Dear Editor, Unknown to most people, Fip Motilall worked for many years researching Amaila Falls. Make no bones about this, Fip is very knowledgeable about Amaila Falls.

In 2010, I was a member of a team working with Fip to locate a route to the base of the falls. We used some existing roads, such as part of the Bartica Potaro road. I won’t bore the reader with too much detail, but other existing roads were used. Not that all the roads were existing roads.

There were some new roads particularly the road leading to the base of the falls. Its 129 miles from Amaila falls to Linden where the power is to be delivered. The power will be carried in a transmission line that will run down the centre of a clearing that is 200 ft wide.

Years ago, there were no restrictions on bulldozing a 200 ft. corridor. The bulldozers pushed the trees down, then moved them to the edge of the clearing, where they were burnt. Not so today. Both the forestry department and the EPA will have their say in

clearing the bush and disposing the trees. The EPA, if they do their job and not bend to the will of the Government will ask a whole lot of difficult questions, and will require an environmental impact assessment. In today’s climate this will take a long time.

TIME IS MONEY. Now for some fun and games.

Fip budgeted US$4,400,000 to build Section 7 of the Amaila Falls road.

Having completed 25 percent of the work in this section (US$1,100,000) he was fired in Jan. 2012. H. N. Pasha was awarded a contract for US$4,150,000 to complete section 7. He was paid US$1,240,000 before he was fired. China Rail was awarded a contract for US$8,200,000 to finish Section 7. This is after Fip completed 25 percent of the work, which was valued at US$1.1M and H. N. Pasha was paid US$1.2M for the work he did. China rail is yet to complete Section 7. If Fip had not been fired, Section 7 would probably have been completed at a cost of US $4,400,000 and would have been finished by late 2012 or

early 2013.

Up to a few days ago it seemed that it cost US$10,540,000 to build Section 7. Add it all up: US$1,100,000 to Fip, plus US$1,240,000 to Pasha, plus US$ 8,200,000 to China Rail.

Now we learn that in addition to $8,200,000 that was contracted with China Rail to build Section 7, your newspaper reports that the original bid by China Rail was for $11,200,000; however, NICIL agreed that the price would be reduced to $8,200,000 provided two plots of land are transferred to China Rail. By inference these two plots of land, a one-acre plot at Liliendaal and a 7.5-acre plot at Friendship are worth US$3,000,000. So, it now seems Section 7 cost $13,540,000 to build, which is not much less than the $15,400,000 that Fip bid to build the WHOLE road, including a pontoon service connecting the road leading down to the Essequibo River opposite Butakari to Butakari on the other side of the Essequibo River, and a substantial bridge connecting the North bank to

the South bank of the Kurubrong River. We must wonder what else will crawl out of the woodwork.

The most knowledgeable person in Guyana about Amaila Falls is my good friend Maurice Veecock.

Maurice indicates that during dry spells, the volume of water arriving at the powerhouse at the base of the falls decreases hence the power produced is reduced.

To maintain power levels, Maurice proposes diverting water from Chi Chi Falls, which is on the Mazaruni River into the Potaro River.

This will increase the volume of water reaching Kaieteur Falls. He then proposes to take water upstream of Kaieteur Falls and divert this water through a conduit into the Amaila Falls reservoir. By maintaining a sufficient volume of water in the reservoir means that a sufficient volume of water will reach the powerhouse at the base of the falls, thus power levels will be maintained.

This water flows into the Kurobrong River. A fairly constant flow of water with (Continued on page 5)

14 months later - no opposition, pre- or postcongress Dear Editor, It is slightly over 14 months since that fateful day of the swearing-in of a new national leader to spearhead a new national government.

It has been fateful in many areas, and though Guyanese may have looked at this in some way and moved on, there is so much more to the story. In those 14 months plus, there has been no political opposition, absolutely none of any standing or salt; it has been one totally lacking in shame, one due any respect, with the implications of which I think still not registering fully on all citizens. Guyanese must pause from their increasingly fevered visions to think of what this means, when pondered a little deeper.

It is the most humdrum of times – sedate, even uneventful – a country having no opposition of strength or texture is equivalent to it having no police force, no public service, no tribunal of restraint, no dissenting

advocates on the people’s behalf. Such a society has no soul, since it has no core. In such circumstances, it is the law of the lawless taking over slowly at first, then in more rapid reckless acceleration. It is that the rules are what those who make them say they are, their related behaviour is proof of the porridge. It brings gagging. Who is there to stop them? Where is the voice of disagreement? And what about well-researched and well-presented contradictions? It can’t be a handful of letter writers and columnists. It is not editorials that say: hey, what is going on here? Those contribute, but have no constituency, save for readership, some hostile. They ran for nothing, were elected to nothing. So there! Now recall: this is in the context of boringly pleasant times.

But here is the Guyana no longer on the cusp, but actually a bona fide prosperity frontier, with endless possibilities, but without a recognised opposition of any caliber. The PPP Government is in serial criminal mode, and

All things considered, we were and remain concerned that Republicans could be so pivotally involved in electoral reform here. When so, doubts arise about the real objectives.

When fairness is needed, when integrity must be painted all over the process, and when coloured people are involved, including overseas voters. These have plagued us, and will continue to do so. We alone must fix ourselves to our satisfaction.

there are no opposition policemen around, not even a couple corporals. There is a government, but other than it is official, there is little else that is positive about it, because politicos and public servants have all been schooled a certain way.

Opposition also. The lifelong school I attended teaches honesty, authenticity, and integrity; the latter deliver the first two. Compare that to the places that political leaders make their treasured college of study: the erudition of encyclopedic deceptions; classrooms of chronic corruptions; and criminal ambitions of serial betrayers.

The dreadful opposition is too much like the Government; hence, it can’t represent, stand.

It languishes in Dante’s torments.

I think it is part of national politics and national leadership for sale. We have been selling, haven’t we?

Observe them, how they dart around like startled snakes.

Listen to government and opposition, and there is a heavy multi-volume textbook of men cunningly putting one foot in front of the other, to conceal convincingly. I see them through the oiliness. A snake shedding skin remains a snake.

Behold the opposition: weakened, selfdefeating, blowing smoke.

When needed the most, it is a

mortuary case.

My parting word is when there is an authentic opposition that has some degree of dignified selfrespect, then concern for the lot of the people is paramount, and inspires to overcoming any internal dissensions, any competing individual visions, and ideological contradictions. The welfare of citizen and country is too much to be held to ransom, because of bitter internal squabbling, self-destructive hostility; in such crucibles, nationalists rise to the challenges of the occasion: a society is at stake. By my calculation, venal PPP Government leadership and cast have at least another year of freedom to perfect their despotisms. I further think that the PPP Government is well-set, because pre-or postCongress, the opposition will be the same. Bought out.

Sold out. Bottom fall out.

Thus, bottom-line realities in Guyana today are: no opposition, little of an independent and ethical media, a naked mystery for a security apparatus, a public service wooed and weaned and willed a certain way, and citizens wondering where this will lead, and how it will all end. Maybe, I should throw hat.

Fire has been part of our political culture Dear Editor, Fires and other associated conflagration have long been a matter of concern for all of us here in Guyana, judging from our social and political history. Fires can be used as a tool to intimidate, kill, maim and destroy valuable information, something politicians have used throughout the history of our country. A short step back in time and you will see this vividly evident in the aftermath of the 1964 Elections, where this country was mired in a spate of civil destruction.

There were bombings and burnings, and millions worth of damages were present all around us as the city went up in flames. These fires plunged our country into a state of emergency, which eventually brought back some semblance of normalcy to life here. However, fires still remain a bugbear on a Guyana Landscape. Fire is also used as a valuable tool to destroy evidence. This was seen some years ago in the social saga of an extramarital affair between a politician and a prominent sports personality.

The result of that adulterous relationship saw

the wife turning up dead, under highly controversial circumstances. What we were told by the husband of the dead woman was that she wanted her mortal remains to be cremated, as the saying goes “dead men tell no tales, as the evidence went up in flames.”

Then, there was the burning of The National Development Building, something which we would all agree, was a precursor to the assassination of Dr. Walter Rodney. We now know that fire was used as evidence to prove that Dr. Rodney was a violent man, who believed in the violent overthrow of the then Burnham Dictatorship.

The logic behind that reasoning is, this was licence for the regime to kill him. To this day, that foolishness is still being peddled by the PNC and some of their associates. Then, there was the infamous “slo fiah moh fiah” chant by Hoyte and his thugs. That rallying call after the PNC’s humiliating defeat at the 1997 Elections.

That call to violence again saw a number of buildings going up in flames in the central business district of Georgetown.

We now turn our attention

to the Brickdam Fire, was this just a situation of “I was frustrated being in the lockups,” or was it a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence pertaining to an ongoing court matter? I have posited the second part of the question to say this, then why are members of a particular political party so much involved in this criminal’s defense, is there something to hide?

Why is there so much interest by the political operatives of that party in this man’s defense, to the point where they have provided him with legal counsel? Are they nervous that there would be further revelations, which will show a political nexus, attached to the burning, which is it? And even more damning are the questions that are being asked, what kind or type of documents were destroyed in the fire?

These are all interesting developments to date.

I, therefore, call on our Crime Chief to be on high alert, as there is much political undercurrents at work in this matter and no stone should be left unturned until we get to the bottom of it.

A fire needs oxygen, fuel and heat to start Dear Editor, Guyana Times edition of Monday, October 11, 2021 screamed, “Brickdam fire must be treated as possible domestic terrorism - VP Jagdeo says int’l assistance will be pursued to bolster local investigation.” The Guyana Times also carried a photograph of the fire in progress.

The photograph is very instructive. I observed that the lockup where it is alleged that a prisoner started the fire is pristine.

No smoke or fire was seen coming from the lockup. The vents of the lockup are clearly visible.

Sometime ago I read about the fire triangle. Here is it.

Without sufficient heat a fire cannot continue. Without fuel a fire will stop.

Without sufficient oxygen a fire will not begin, and it cannot continue. Oxygen, fuel and heat must come into play for a fire to start and continue.

What is there for int’l assistance to pursue to bolster local investigation?

Perhaps, the forensic evidence was removed and safely stored elsewhere awaiting the arrival and analysis of the overseas experts. But what about the nexus?

GWI’s management team, parallel directorates elsewhere Dear Editor, One notes the reported negative reaction to a public sector organisation appearing to be led by a ‘Corporate Management Team’ comprised of 10 ‘Executive Directors’, and the Chief Executive Officer. The executive portfolios are seen to include the following: - Corporate Services - Human Resources and Development - Finance - Project Implementation - Operations - Business Development - Information and Communication Technology - Procurement - Commercial Services and

Customer Relations - Hinterland Services To all appearances the GWI is composed of 10 Departments, each of which is headed by an Executive Director, who happens to be male. Complainants would be justified in enquiring the respective periodicities of their attachment to GWI. At the same time, it is worth bearing in mind that there are comparable directorates in other organisations.

In the meantime, from this distance, it is not absolutely certain whether this Corporate Management Team equates with the Board of GWI. For one recalls that about five years ago, on the

resignation of the substantive Chairman, Ms. Patricia Chase-Greene, Mayor of Georgetown, then a member, was appointed to act as Chairman of the Board.

Amongst other membership of the Board were the following: Carol Joseph, Savitri Singh-Sharma and Samantha Fedee (from the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs).

What appears uncertain five years on is whether there exists a comparable Board structure? It should not be difficult for the Ministry concerned to clarify this unnecessary puzzle.

Solution for suicide by children Dear Editor, As a person who has been actively involved in education, especially of the young people of Guyana, in my long career as a teacher and a qualified counsellor, in schools, in seminars all over our country, and in my weekly columns as Uncle Roy, I now see the need for parents of young children, especially teenagers, to make a concerted effort to encourage their children to speak to them regularly about their personal problems. We all know of the frequent incidents when our young people have committed suicide, or at least tried to end their lives.

This is because by themselves they see no way out of their problems except to end it all. This would certainly not be the case if they are assured of help by their parents or others whom they can trust.

I believe that many parents feel that they are not

able to solve their children’s problems, and so hesitate to get involved, but they must appreciate that, as human beings, we are each endowed with an innate power to move towards the answers to the challenges that we encounter as we move through life.

Most times all it needs is for us to be able to confide in others and bring our troubles into the open.

I am now urging all parents and guardians of children to develop a routine, say weekly, in which they make a determined effort to gain the confidence of their children, and encourage them to open up about their concerns, and at least try to ease any problematic situation.

If my memory serves me correctly the next falls, up-stream from Kaieteur is the Queen of Diamonds falls. Maurice can go on and on. The fireball still glows brightly Dear Editor, Guyana has many persons who have outstanding histories in their own spheres of operation. Unfortunately we do not seem to be producing enough historians who can bring their stories to life. That would be a great contribution because their lives could inspire many others to achieve great heights.

These include several women. One of whom comes to mind immediately is Ms. Patricia Benn. She played a leading role in what was clearly the most difficult period in this country’s history. She was a youth leader, a women’s leader and a champion in the independence struggle.

But more of her later.

Today, I want to focus on another giant of a woman whose contributions to where we are at present is also tremendous. She is Ms. Philomena Sahoye-Shurry.

On October 13, today, we are celebrating her 90th birthday.

Reaching this milestone by itself is a great achievement. However, there were 90 glorious years filled with struggles, joys, disappointments, danger and daring exploits.

At the time of Philo’s birth, Guyana was a colony, British Guiana. The vast majority of people were poor and oppressed. The people had very few civil and political rights. Voting for

instance, was the preserve of the rich and well born.

The people were just beginning to stir and were gradually becoming aware of their circumstances. This was seen in the beginning of the formation of trade unions in our country.

Philo herself was born into a class just above that of the workers. She was a Vieira.

That well known family in our country had enjoyed more social and financial security than most.

She was 15 years old when Cheddi and Janet Jagan, Ashton Chase and Joslyn Hubbard began the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and took the first steps in the fight for freedom. Philo was one of the young people who became highly motivated by the vision that the PAC comrades had expressed and embraced the ideals that they were fighting for.

Her sense of justice and strong feelings for the working people, the oppressed and down trodden masses propelled her into the ranks of the PPP. She rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s when the PPP was encouraging and organising the sugar workers to form a union. The union which had made a powerful impact on the workers, the Guiana Industrial Workers Union (GIWU) became defunct after the split of the PPP in 1955.

When the new union was

formed, Philomena became the General Secretary, while Harry Lall occupied the position as President of the union. It was first called the Guiana Sugar Workers Union, that name came as a request of Philomena’s suggestion. It was later changed to the Guyana Agricultural Workers union (GAWU).

It was here that she was tested. She was foraged in the fire of struggle and became a woman of steel. In this position Philo led many demonstrations and was known as an uncompromising champion of the workers in general and sugar workers in particular.

During the bitter struggle for recognition in the early 1960s and in 1964 in particular Philo stood out as a great fighter. She made rousing speeches at mammoth rallies in challenging the sugar gods.

She was so forceful that she was called the “Fire Ball”.

That was an endearing name for the workers but one that above caution and respect from the sugar bosses.

Philomena was charged on numerous occasions and dragged before the courts charged with sedition. This was during the strike that evolved for recognition.

Indeed it was while she was on her way to the Rose Hall Court in June of 1964 to answer one of those charges that she was once again arrested and detained. She

was the only woman that the colonial police arrested in that period. She was at the centre of that tremendous and heroic struggle.

She bore prison with great fortitude and refused to bend to the oppressors will as many had done before.

Philo was more than just a trade unionist. She was a political leader and served in the leadership of the PPP for many years.

She was one of the leaders of the Freedom March along with L.S. H Singh, Michael Forde and others.

Philo also served as a member of the National Assembly for many years.

She was forced into exile after she married Dr. Shurry.

The story I heard about that was that Dr. Shurry was afraid of what the PNC would do to him for marrying that PPP rebel. The African Guyanese members and supporters of the PPP were attacked brutally with double vengeance by PNC terrorists.

However, on returning to Guyana, the Fire Ball resumed from where she had left off.

In the years since 1992 Philo worked as Deputy Mayor of Georgetown. She should have been Mayor but as is characteristic of the PNC, it reneged on agreement it had on the issue of rotating

the Mayorship. That took place between 1994 and 1997.

Philo went back to the National Assembly where she continued to champion workers cause.

She also worked throughout the country organising and mobilising communities to improve their circumstances.

Philo has always been loved and respected at all levels of the PPP and the country. She served the people of Guyana with great distinction and is truly a living legend of this land.

Operationalising the Affiance Community Library Dear Editor, Kindly permit me to use the column of your esteemed newspaper, on behalf of the residents of the villages of Affiance, Taymouth Manor and Capoey on the Essequibo Coast, I wish to sincerely thank Mr. Mohammed Arafat Qualander, the owner of “Queensway Security” of Regent and Oronoque Streets, Georgetown and Mr. Seearam Dabicharran (originally from Perseverance, Essequibo Coast) the owner of “Dabi’s Variety” of Lot 40 Robb Street, Georgetown, for their generous donation of over 200 school text books to the Affiance Community Library.

The library is one of the

projects of the Affiance Community Cohesion Group that consist of community volunteers working on social projects defined by the community. The concept of the library is to facilitate a storytelling programme, early borrowers and text books borrowers for students pursuing online studies.

When the Government reopened schools, it was prior to the completion of the physical space to house the library. That triggered the volunteers to assess needs for textbooks that are required (which were not provided by the Ministry of Education) by students of the three communities whose parents are experiencing a challenge

to purchase the books.

Having determined the needs, efforts were made to acquire the books.

The text books will belong to the library and borrowed by the parents for the duration that they are required by the students.

Thereafter, they will be returned and be available to other batches of students.

Hope you will publish my letter in your newspaper as to encourage other persons and donors to assist in Community Development Projects.

Concern for a pensioner Dear Editor, I am here to express my concern for Archibald Sandiford, an elderly man, who has not yet received his old age pension grant since April of 2021. Earlier in April his pension book got damaged and he was given a new one as a replacement.

Shortly after he received the replacement it was also misplaced. Sandiford was

instructed to make a police report and present it at the Region Four head office to get assistance.

After making the report at the Sparendaam Police Station which was taken to the Region Four head office, he was informed that Mr. Tiwari, who is in charge of the distribution of pension booklets said not to give him another one. Two days ago

he was appointed a new booklet which is set for use in the first three months in 2022.

Sandiford is still unable to retrieve his money from previous months and currently cannot collect for the remaining of the year. He can be contacted on telephone numbers 220-8573 and +592 643 7816.

'Ratty' wanted for Nail technician busted with cocaine found in frozen murder of Kaneville man curry, pepper-pot at CJIA Arrested, Mallika Lambert, and the cocaine that was found stashed in the food.

A nail technician was busted by agents of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), on Tuesday morning when they intercepted an outgoing passenger on Copa Airlines with cocaine stashed in frozen bowls of curry and pepper-pot at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

According to a press release issued by CANU, the flight was destined for Panama

with onward connections to the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.Kaieteur News learnt that a search conducted by CANU agents on the checkedin luggage of 33-year-old Mallika Lambert, uncovered some 6.232 kilograms of suspected cocaine.

Lambert, a nail technician, is currently in CANU's custody as investigations continue.

Twenty-five-year-old Seon Caesar, called 'Ratty' is wanted by the police in relation to the murder of Nelson Thomas, a miner of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, who was killed during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

More than a month after Thomas was murdered, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday issued the wanted bulletin for Caesar. Anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the murder suspect is asked to

Jagdeo is back peddling faster than a Lamborghini in reverse The main Opposition is on solid grounds in its criticisms of the last-minute consultations, engineered by the government, to decide on Guyana's National Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

As representatives of some of the people they have pointed out, the consultations which commenced on Monday are indeed a sham and far from the fair, open and equitable process that would have involved the genuine participation of Guyanese. The PPP/C had a long time to consult widely and properly on this matter but did not do so with the result, that it is in a last minute risk to bulldoze consultations down the throats of Guyanese.

National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are undertakings which each country agrees to in order to ensure the overall reduction of emissions under the Paris Agreement. Each country is required to state what it will do to reduce emissions, and these are deemed its NDCs. The APNU+AFC representatives have justifiable reason to feel that the consultations are a charade. They describe the outcome as a fait accompli, meaning that the government has already decided what it plans to do and simply wants to rubber stamp it through these last-minute and rushed consultations.

Second Vice President, in an interview in last Sunday's Stabroek News, made comments which his critics can justifiably claim to be prejudicial to the consultations. The country's Vi c e P r e s i d e n t m a d e statements indicating what the government is likely to do in terms of its NDCs. The Second Vice President went as far as even placing a price tag of US$1.6M on the assistance required.

In that interview, the Second Vice President said that the renewable energy NDC set by the APNU+AFC was wild and unrealistic. He said the new NDCs would likely see the halving of the 100 percent renewable energy target set by Granger.

T h e G r a n g e r administration had agreed to 'near-100 percent' (not 100 percent) renewable energy by 2025. This is clearly stated in the Green State Development Strategy. However, in its submission to the UNFCC, the APNU+AFC, said that it believed that “Guyana can develop a 100 percent renewable power supply by 2025 and that it would undertake an assessment of potential renewable energy sources, including an independent review of the Amaila Falls Project.

Jagdeo, however, has to be joking when he says that this was a wild and unrealistic target. It was not.

He himself had touted the benefits of the Amaila Falls Hydroelectric towards Guyana's renewable energy thrust and had said that had the APNU not prevented its

implementation, it would have been completed in four years.

Amaila was Jagdeo's pet project and the one which he felt held the greatest hope for Guyana's renewable energy thrust. Jagdeo's Low Carbon Development Strategy claimed that Amaila would enable Guyana “to switch from nearly 100 percent dependence on fossil fuelbased electricity generation to nearly 100 percent clean, renewable energy supplies.”

The LCDS therefore speaks about 100 percent clean, renewable energy supply. So how come this very target under Granger has become wild and unrealistic?

If Amaila is so transformational and could still be built by 2025 why is Jagdeo contending that 100 percent renewable energy by 2025 is unrealistic? Has he forgotten that the independent review undertaken by Norconsult found that the only realistic path for Guyana towards an emission free electricity sector is by developing its hydropower potential and the fastest way forward is to maintain Amaila?

Jagdeo is now changing his tune. He now wants to reduce the LCDS and Granger's target by half. But why would he want to do this when he has the means to enable Guyana to have nearly 100 percent clean renewable energy?

He clearly does not understand the Paris Agreement. The agreement states that each successive NDC must improve on the

A 50 percent reduction is not a progression on the current contribution. And it is not Guyana's highest possible ambition, especially considering that the LCDS

had aimed, like Granger, for near-100 percent renewable energy.

But there is a reason why Jagdeo is back peddling. He does not want 100 percent renewable energy by 2025 or even 2030 because that would cancel out the need for the gas-to-shore project.

Natural gas is not considered a clean or renewable energy

source. Jagdeo is desperate for the gas-to-shore project, even though natural gas is not a renewable energy source.

And, do you know why?

Why is this nation accepting these abuses of power?

T

hink of the following; just think of how you would feel. It requires five CXC subjects with Maths and English to secure a place at UG. What happens if the Vice Chancellor unilaterally changes it to 10 CXCs? It is the same with entry into the public service. What happens if the Minister of the Public Service on her own changes it to 10?

Five persons including the driver are permitted in a private car.

What happens if the Traffic Chief decides all by himself that only the driver can be in the front section and there can no longer be another person sitting in the front seat?

The age of NIS retirement benefit is 60.

What happens if the General Manager acting on her own behalf changes it is 68 years?

The first predictable reaction of every citizen is why this was done by one person only? The second

predictable question is: did the government approve it?

The third predictable response is that it is not right and should not be allowed.

I m e t D r. N i g e l Gravesande, the Registrar of the University of Guyana last Sunday morning in the supermarket.

This gentleman is someone I consider a friend.

We spent four years as UG history students and there are many fond memories just as with the former Chancellor of the Judiciary, Carl Singh, who shared the identical circumstances.

The topic was the contents of my Sunday column in which I expressed uncontrollable anger at the historical and traditional lack of service in general in this country.

I told Nigel I know about this tragedy because given my work wherever I go people complain to me.

I told him right in the supermarket where we were standing, that I would meet people and they would

transmit their feelings of anger, disgust, sadness and resignation to me.

As a social activist of over 50 years and a media operative of over 33 years, the complaints of mistreatment of ordinary citizens by commercial banks are non-stop. I am confessing to my readers that it is a subject that I am completely and absolutely fed up with (please note the two adverbs). I have no mental patience and psychological tolerance in continuing to write on this depravity and social sickness.

I come now to yet another episode of abuse of citizens by the commercial banks. I have been told over and over that the Managers of these banks unilaterally decided that they would only accept the address on a driver's licence within a sixmonth period after its issuance.

Please note – there is no governmental regulation, no law, no ministerial edict that

directs the banks on the time line of six months.

A driver's licence has a life of five years.

Why then the time span of six months? It means if on January 2 you get your fiveyear licence, in June the bank will not accept your address on it.

Again I ask two questions – why six months and who made that inexplicable decision?

We have a government and two parliamentary opposition parties. People voted to empower then, they must act to protect the people who voted for them.

The PPP, PNC and LJP have supporters who face this abuse.

Every citizen, black, white, grey, green, brown, endure all types of bureaucratic abuse. Political parties must act in the interest of those that they ask for their votes.

We have four daily newspapers yet there has been no editorial on the mistreatment of small

depositors by commercial banks. The thing is that this terrible attitude by the banks is commonplace across this entire country. It is Frederick Kissoon talked about all the Association on the time.

There is a plethora of headaches and nightmare letters about this situation. ordinary people face at the To date there is no editorial commercial banks.

But then, there is the Bar from any newspaper. There is no statement from any Association.

Why don't they test these parliamentarian. There is no expression from any civil cruel indiscretions in the courts? society grouping.

Here is why the Bar Enter the private sector.

The business folks make Association, politicians and their money from the business people remain insensitive. consumers.

They do not face the Ordinary people buy the products of businesses and cruelties. Remember our manufacturing companies local 007 banked a cheque and that is what keeps them for $1 million American dollars and no questions alive.

Essequibo man found guilty of raping woman An Essequibo man was found guilty of rape by a 12member jury at the Suddie High Court. Francis Gonsalves was found guilty of raping a 35-year-old woman in 2018. The jury delivered a 10-2 majority verdict at the Suddie High Court yesterday, after

finding Gonsalves guilty of the crime of engaging in sexual penetration with the victim without her consent on March 27, 2018. His trial took place before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Gonsalves of the Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast, had

attacked and raped his victim after she left a birthday party at 03:00hrs on the night of March 27, 2018. Gonsalves refused to accept the verdict and told the court that he was innocent and had an unfair trial.His attorney, Ravindra (Continued on page 20)

Cellphone tracker helps cops capture bandit A tracker on a cellphone led East Coast police to capture an armed bandit before he could have escape with his stolen booty.

The delinquent, identified as a 31-year-old man had reportedly pounced on two women and robbed them in their car around 13:30hrs in front of a boutique located along the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The women-one of them a businesswoman- had told investigators that they had stopped there after making a drop off at the Ogle International Airport, but before they could exit their car a man armed with a gun approached them.

He reportedly pointed the weapon at the women and ordered them to give him all of their belongings.

The victims told detectives that they were fearful of being shot, so they handed over a cellphone and their handbags, which contained a quantity of raw gold and cash.

They recalled that the armed bandit ran and entered a waiting silver Premio motorcar, bearing licence plate PMM6951 and drove off.

According to police the victims called and reported the robbery immediately after.

However, they were able to give ranks the exact route the getaway car was travelling, because of a tracker activated on the cellphone he stole from them. Patrol ranks responded quickly and headed to the location where they spotted the vehicle driving along the Industry

Crown Dam road.

The ranks reportedly moved in to intercept him, leading to the car colliding with a parked van.

The bandit in an attempt to escape exited the car with a weapon, and started to run.

Ranks gave chase and caught him but before he surrendered, he tried to get rid of his firearm by throwing it into a nearby drain.

Cops recovered the weapon, which they identified as a Taurus .32 pistol.

They also searched the car, found the items he had stolen from the women, and a magazine with live ammunition.

The suspect is currently held at the Sparendaam Police lockups, while detectives continue their investigation.

According to Region Three traffic ranks, Premnarine was riding his bicycle east along the road, when an unlicensed driver coming from the opposite direction lost control of his car and crashed into the pedal cyclist.

It was reported too, that he further collided with a truck parked at the side of

the road.

The aftermath left both the car and the bicycle mangled, and an unconscious Premnarine lying on the roadway bleeding from his injuries.

Bids open to build new GMC packaging plant in Sophia The Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) opened bids yesterday for a new packaging plant to be built in Sophia.

According to the Tender, the engineer's estimate for the completion of works is $63.6M. The facility is expected to engage in the production and packaging of various products to supply Guyana's local and export markets.

The facility will be the next step forward in President Irfaan Ali's vision for a

sustainable and robust economy and a food-secure Guyana.

Kaieteur News understands that the facility will be critical in building

Guyana's capacity for the large-scale production of packaged products and will reduce the level of spoilage of fruits by converting them to processed products, which can be sold locally or exported.

When Kaieteur News made contact with GMC Public Relations Officer, Shevon Nedd, and raised several questions related to the new packaging plant, she stated that the information will be forthcoming as soon as possible.

Armed bandits cart offCevon's safe after duct taping security Two male security guards of the Cevons Wa s t e M a n a g e m e n t Company ages fifty-six and sixty-four, were held at gunpoint and duct taped during a robbery on Tuesday around 02:00hrs.

According to police one of the security guards, who was on duty at the time, was at his post in the guard hut at the front of the building. While there, he was approached from behind by two men armed with handguns. During the gunpoint holdup, one of the suspects reportedly

said, 'don't move or we gon kill you.'

The guard held at gunpoint was then ordered back into the building where another security guard was on duty. Subsequently, two other suspects jumped the fence and joined in the holdup, while the victims were held in the building and tied up with duct tape.

Shortly after, another three men joined the first four robbers in relieving the two bound guards of the following items in their possession: one Samsung Galaxy Smart Phone valued

$15,000 and one ZTE cellphone valued $17,000.

Further, a vault containing an undisclosed amount of cash, belonging to the Cevon Waste Management Company was also stolen.

Thereafter, the suspects exited the building and made good their escape, leaving the two victims still tied-up. Later, the two guards managed to untie themselves and raise an alarm.

Checks made for the suspects proved futile, and police investigations are ongoing.

The Defendant, Patrick Clarke, a bus driver appeared before Principal Magistrate, Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates' Courts.

The first charge stated that on August 30, 2021, at Stabroek, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, Clarke

obtained $120,000 from Shonette Forde by falsely pretending he was in the position to rent an apartment while knowing same to be untrue.

It is also alleged that on the same date, at Broad and Russell Streets, Charlestown, Georgetown, with the intent to defraud, the Defendant obtained $60,000 from Candace Robertson by falsely pretending he was in a position to rent an apartment while knowing same to be untrue.

The third charge stated

that on September 3, 2021, at Bourda, Georgetown, with the intent to defraud the Defendant obtained $70,000 from Marvin Sutherland by falsely pretending that he was in a position to rent an apartment while knowing same to be untrue.

It is further alleged that on September 5, 2021, at

Women robbed during home invasion

Two women, a 71-yearold pastor and a 36-year-old supervisor were robbed yesterday around 03:40hrs during a home invasion at Lama Drive, Meadow Brook Gardens.

This publication understands that the victims went to bed, but forgot to secure a wooden door to the upper flat of the house. One of the women was awakened by the sound of footsteps in the hall of her home and got up to investigate.

During her check she was confronted by two suspects, one of whom pointed a gun at her and told her not to make any noise.

They then proceeded to the second victim's room and woke her up with demands for money and gold.

The suspects after receiving $60,000 in cash also escaped with: two cellular phones valued at $65,000 and $31,000, two laptop computers valued $78,000 and $75,000, two televisions valued $250,000, and two iPads valued $28,000.

The suspects then made good their escape through the opened door.

Efforts to locate the suspects were unsuccessful, and police investigations are ongoing.

As such, they stated, Thomas, who spends most of his time in Cuyuni, Region Seven, travelled out so that he could sign papers for his son.

“He left home to go by his uncle, who had promised him something, he only came out this week and today [September 10, 2021] he had planned to go sign for his one and only child,” Thomas' aunt said. She further stated that after he left home, his wife had called him to inquire when he would return. It was at this point Thomas reportedly told his wife that he was 15 minutes away, and that he will be home soon. They noted that minutes later they got the

news that Thomas was found dead with a knife wound to his chest.

It was reported that when they went to the scene, they saw Thomas lying on his back in a pool of blood with his eyes and mouth open.

The miner's body was then escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

On Friday September 17, 2021, Leroy Griffith, was remanded to prison for the murder of the 36-year-old Thomas called 'Nelo.' The matter was called in the D i a m o n d / G r o v e Magistrate's Court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleges that on September 9, 2021, at Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, he murdered Thomas during the course or furtherance of a robbery.

Griffith is expected to make his next court appearance on October 26, 2021.

Kenya dominates Boston Marathon as Kipruto, Kipyogei win Reuters - Kenya’s Benson Kipruto won the men’s race and Diana Kipyogei led a Kenyan sweep of the women’s podium at the Boston Marathon on Monday, each picking up their first-ever major title.

American CJ Albertson set an aggressive early pace to lead the men’s field by two minutes and 13 seconds through the first half but saw his headstart disintegrate over hilly terrain after the 20mile mark, as a tight pack overtook him.

World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 calendar released with 10 rounds scheduled over six months

nsidethegames The World Rugby Sevens Series 2022 schedule has been confirmed with 10 men’s and women’s rounds set to take place over six months, kicking off with the Dubai Sevens from November 26 to 27 2021.

The opener, featuring m e n ’s a n d w o m e n ’s tournaments, will be played behind closed doors as a result of COVID-19.

However, the series returns to Dubai a week later from December 3 to 4 but with fans in attendance at The Sevens Stadium.

Cycling’s governing body helps evacuate 165 people from Afghanistan

BCsport - The UCI has said it assisted in the evacuation of 165 people from Afghanistan, including a number of female cyclists.

Cycling’s world governing body partnered with Israel Start-Up Nation team owner Sylvan Adams, the Asian Cycling Federation and Fifa.

The refugees are being resettled in Switzerland, Canada, France, Israel and the United States. The UCI will make its facilities available to the 38 in Switzerland. In addition to cyclists, artists, journalists and human rights campaigners were among those

evacuated from Afghan soil.

UCI president David Lappartient said: “It is very important for the UCI to make a commitment to the members of the cycling family who are suffering due to the current situation in Afghanistan. “I am delighted our efforts in this respect are providing opportunities for the people concerned in decent living conditions. “I would like to express my sincere thanks to the governments of Switzerland, France, Canada, Albania, the United Arab Emirates and Israel, and other countries which have worked on this project.”

SuperSport - A biennial World Cup will not dilute the “magic” of the tournament as its frequency would have no bearing on its quality and prestige, FIFA President

F o o t b a l l ’s w o r l d governing body FIFA is conducting a feasibility study into the practicalities of staging a World Cup every two years, a move that has been met with fierce criticism from various confederations, clubs, players and fan groups.

“A World Cup with 48 teams (from 2026) has already been decided.

Whether it will take place every two years or four years, that is under consultation,” Infantino told media in Israel. “Definitely

believe in having more prestigious events, whether the World Cup or anything else... Precisely because it is a magic tournament is perhaps why it should happen more often.

“The prestige of an event depends on its quality, not its frequency. You have the Super Bowl every year, Wimbledon or the Champions League every year, and everyone is excited and waiting for it.”

Infantino also said FIFA are looking to expand the Club World Cup that is held annually. “We would like to increase the value of national

championships and domestic leagues,” he added. “We need to find the right format that won’t be too disruptive to the calendar and all the other events.”

Infantino was also asked if Israel could ever host the World Cup and he said the country co-hosting the event with its neighbours in the Middle East was definitely an option. “Why can’t we dream of the World Cup in Israel and its neighbours?

With the Abraham Accords, why should we not do it here in Israel with her neighbours in the Middle East and the Palestinians,” Infantino said.

ESPNcricinfo - West Indies will continue to take a knee before their matches at the men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE in a stand against racism, their captain Kieron Pollard has said. West Indies’ players and support staff have kneeled and raised fists before the start of games since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, showing their support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Speaking from the team’s training camp in Dubai yesterday, Pollard said that they would continue to do so during the tournament. “From my knowledge at this present time, I think it’s something we’re going to continue because it’s something that we strongly believe in, as a team,” Pollard said. “Hopefully we can just continue to show our support for something that I think is close to our hearts.”

England, West Indies’ opponents in their opening fixture in Dubai on October 23, took a knee during the series against West Indies and Ireland last year but were criticised by Michael Holding, the former fast bowler and broadcaster, for when they stopped doing so later in their home summer.

Before Australia’s men took a knee for the first time during their white-ball tour to the Caribbean earlier this year, Pollard said he did not want opposition teams to kneel “because the West Indies are doing it” and that it was “not a matter of us just doing it and you supporting us and we’re looking for that

sympathy”.

“Everyone has their own opinions on racism and Black Lives Matter and all these things,” Pollard said, asked if he would encourage England to take a knee alongside West Indies. “So, I can’t tell them what to do or expect anything, because sometimes when you expect things from people, you tend to get disappointed.

“Again, sometimes, you just have to look at the man in the mirror, and if we think it is something that is very, very important to us, we will do it. And if the opposition thinks that as well, it’s up to them. If they don’t, [it’s a matter of] personal choices.”

The ICC has previously intervened and fined players when they have made gestures “for messages which relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes” or displayed “personal messages on their clothing, equipment or otherwise,” but last year pledged to use “common sense” when players took a knee.

Chris Jordan, the fast bowler, said earlier on Tuesday (yesterday) that the England squad had not yet spoken about the possibility of taking at knee during their training camp in Oman. “Nothing has been discussed, really” Jordan said. “We’ll discuss it and if people feel strongly about it, we’ll definitely do it.

On the flip side, if we don’t, then we won’t.

We’ll have to discuss that internally and then take it from there.”

More than 100 countries to take part in AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships Insidethegames - A total of 105 nations are set to participate at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Men’s World Boxing Championships in the Serbian capital Belgrade later this month, with 650 athletes registered to compete.

Berbice beat Essequibo by seven wickets on Sunday last to win the 2021 Dassie eight-team Inter-County Softball Cricket tournament at Keele Top, Toronto.

Essequibo batted first at the invitation of Berbice and mustered an inadequate 96-8 off the reduced 12-overs while Berbice safely reached the target in the 11th over, playing in the round arm category.

Deodat Gopie hit an unbeaten 27 and Lindon Persaud made 20 not out for Berbice. In Essequibo’s innings, Imtiaz Bradshaw led the way with a steady 43 while skipper Abdool Azeez chipped in with 19.

David Bhagwandin was the chief destroyer with four wickets for eight runs from his maximum three overs, while Persaud also proved his all-round capability by snatching two wickets for 11

runs off three overs for the winners.

In the open category, Demerara made light work of Berbice, whipping them by a comprehensive tenwicket margin at the same venue. Berbice took first knock after winning the toss and were bowled out for a modest 50 off the 12 overs while Demerara, in reply, surged to the victory with 5.4 overs to spare; Captain Avish Rukhram scoring 21 and Avinash Sookdeo 20.

Only Looknauth Ramsuchit offered any resistance for the Berbicians by making 18 as wickets fell in a heap. Sookdeo was the star with the ball bagging three wickets for 10 runs from two tidy overs.

Sunil Ramkissoon, another experienced campaigner, took two for eight off two overs while there was one apiece for

Bobby Parasnauth and Amit Rukhram. Sookdeo was named the Most Valuable Player while Bhagwandi copped that prize for the round-arm category.

Demerara received Cds $2,500 while the runners-up cashed in on Cds$500. For the round-arm boys, Berbice pocketed Cds$2,000 and Essequibo Cds$500. These four sides also took home a trophy each.

Organiser, Damodar Daesrath stated at the end of the play that he was thankful to the teams for their participation while he reserved special mention for the sponsors. Daesrath, a former Guyana first-class Captain also acknowledged the support of the fans.

He further expressed gratitude to Cricket Journalist, Canada-based Guyanese Ravendra Madholall for providing s o m e c o m m e n t a r y.

We Stand United CC donate cycle equipment to LonLam Classic

e Stand United Cycle C l u b (WSUCC) which has a local as well as a USA chapter on Sunday last donated some cycling equipment to the Linden based LonLam Classic Organisation which hosts a yearly cycle race in the Bauxite Mining Town.

The donation was a promise fulfilled by Owner of WSUCC; Horace Burrowes who is a USA based Businessman. It is not the first time that Burowes has made such a donation, he has a rich history of assisting other clubs and individual cyclists with equipment from time to time.

Handing over the equipment, which includes helmets (10), uniforms (5) and a pair of cycling shoes, was WSUCC 13 year-old sensation Alex Leung who is the reigning National Juvenile Champion. He handed over one of the uniforms to LonLam Classic’s Nigel London at the Chin Chan Cycle Store,

Robb Street.

Burrowes in a brief comment said that he was pleased to make good on a promise to London as he was impressed with the LonLam Classic event which helps to promote the sport that he loves dearly.

“I have been following the progress of the event in Linden and the professional way in which it is run. Also, I really love the fact that it is designed to assist young riders and give them a platform to showcase their skills.

I am really heavy on assisting youths in their development so I decided to reach out to Mr. London to make a contribution.”

London responded: “It is with great pleasure that the organisation has been favoured to be the beneficiary of a very impressive act by Mr. Horace Burrowes; former Guyana Cycling Federation President and Owner of We Stand United Cycle Club, (USA and Guyana). Mr. Burrowes and his group

presented gear to the LonLam Classic Organisation to aid in our investment in the passion of cycling. This speaks of the potency of collaboration; in the effort to help our people.

Mr. Burrowes is committed to further aiding in the development or our cyclists.

LonLam Classic looks forward to developing more partnerships of this nature.”

The LonLam Classic Organisation which is led by Nigel London and Littleton Lambert focuses heavily on investing “in passion” and “riding with integrity”. This is mainly in relation to cycling; but not exclusively therein. For example, the David McDougall Scholarship (a 50,000 GYD Grant) was issued to two students; whose interest is in basketball.

The organisation comprises enthusiasts from Linden, Georgetown, Berbice, and overseas. This November, 14th, the 4th edition of the LonLam Classic would be held in Mackenzie Linden.

CC - A total of 16 warm-up matches will be played between participant teams of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 – a precursor to a tournament promising excitement aplenty. It is pertinent to note that all of the matches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will take place behind closed doors – no spectators will be allowed attendance.

Those keen on closely studying players ahead of making their Dream11 fantasy teams during the tournament will be delighted to know eight of the 16 warm-up matches will be broadcast on Star, with highlights for these matches available on ICC’s digital platforms.

The first set of warm-up fixtures will began yesterday, featuring all the eight teams in Round 1 of the tournament. Each team will play two warm-up matches, with these fixtures being

played over the course of the next two days, starting with the clash between Papua New Guinea and Ireland in Abu Dhabi.

Chasing 148, Sri Lanka had slumped to 79 for 6 in 12 overs, before Avishka Fernando (62 off 42 balls) and Chamika Karunaratne (29 off 25 balls) put together an unbroken 69-run stand to seal victory with one over to spare.

The pair, only two nights ago, had rescued Sri Lanka in a tricky chase against Oman in a T20I. Bangladesh’s own innings was in a fair degree of disarray. They had Soumya Sarkar to thank for lifting them to a formidable total.

Sarkar top scored with 34 off 26 balls, even as Bangladesh’s other batters floundered with none of the others crossing the unbeaten 16 made by Mahedi Hasan and Liton Das. Dushmantha Chameera, fresh off an IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore, impressed immediately upon linking up with the squad, picking 3 for 27.

Ireland were too strong for Papua New Guinea, registering an eight-wicket win as the sides started their preparations for the men’s T20 World Cup with a warm-up fixture in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

PNG elected to bat and limped to 49 for 2 by the 12th over before the floodgates opened. Ben White, the legspinner, ripped through the middle-order to finish with 3 for

10 off his four overs. It included the big strike of PNG captain Assad Vala, also the topscorer in the innings, with 32. It looked like the innings would unravel quickly after that, but Norman Vanua’s unbeaten 14-ball 18, which included the only six of the innings, kept them going. Craig Young, the seamer, polished the lower order to also finish with a three-for.

Ireland lost Kevin O’Brien and Gareth Delany in the space of an over, but were driven home by Andy Balbirnie, the captain, and Curtis Campher, who both hit unbeaten 42s and put together an unbroken stand of 71.

Fast bowler Mark Watt and legspinner Chris Greaves picked up four wickets apiece as Scotland bundled Netherlands out for 90 to carve out a 32-run win.Scotland started slowly, but were helped along by Calum MacLeod, who top scored with an unbeaten 32 from No. 4.

Michael Leask then injected some late momentum with a 26-ball 30 to help them recover to post 122 for 6. Netherlands lost a clutch of wickets in trying to go after the bowling and were soon reduced to 62 for 5, when their most experienced batter Ryan ten Doeschate was out for 3. That became 67 for 6 shortly after when Roelof van der Merwe was bowled. It turned to be a decisive blow.

More overseas support for I have known Gokarn since we were teens cricket gear for young and promising cricketers in Guyana

Allan Mangru, formerly of East Canje, Berbice who now resides in the USA, recently donated $20,000 cash to project: “Cricket G e a r f o r Yo u n g a n d Promising Cricketers in Guyana”. The cash will be used to purchase gear which will be added to the existing list for this initiative which is a joint effort by Kishan Das of the USA and Anil Beharry of Guyana.

Mangru is known to be very charitable and over the years, raising millions of dollars for the NY East Canje Reunion, an organisation that makes significant contributions to the wellbeing of Grade six students and other charities in the East Canje area, Berbice, Guyana.

The organisers thanked Mangru for his assistance and he responded by saying that he is more than happy to be part of this project. Their aim is to provide cricket gear free of cost for young and talented players in Guyana.

The project is seeking new and used cricket gear which will then be distributed across the length and breadth of Guyana.

Total cricket related items collected so far: $40,000 cash, two cricket boots, twelve pairs of batting pads, twelve bats, nine pairs of batting gloves and four

cricket bags. Sixteen young players from the Essequibo Coast, Pomeroon and the East Canje areas have already benefited from a junior gear bag, five bats, six pairs of batting pads and four pairs of batting gloves. Two clubs in Pomeroon will also benefit from two used bats.

Talent spotting is being done across Guyana along with guidance from club leaders to identify the players who must be in school and disciplined.

Players above school age will also be considered.

Gokarn was a Council Member-Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), Council Member-Caribbean Regional Badminton C o n f e d e r a t i o n ( C A R E B A C O ) , Vi c e President CommunicationsBadminton Pan American Confederation (BPAC), 2nd Vice PresidentConfederation Central American and Caribbean B a d m i n t o n (CONCECABA).

He leaves to morn his wife Emily, the Secretary of GBA and his two children, Guyana and Caribbean Badminton champions Narayan and Priyanna who are on scholarship in Canada.

The East Bank Demerara resident, a former Guyana junior and senior player, has spent all of his adult life involved in Badminton from the time he first picked up a racquet at Queens College in 1980.

He was always ambitious and moved to Canada for his children to have the opportunity to compete at a high level and eventually earned a job as the Head Coach of Olds College in Canada.

“I love Badminton and that’s why I am still involved at a National level.

Badminton is in our entire family. Playing a bit also gives me exercise but now most of my attention is focused on Coaching,” said Ramdhani.

In 2008, at ripe age of 43 Gokarn won the National Men’s Open, prompting him to say, “While I would like to think that I am still good enough, the fact that I won the National Open title when I was 43 shows that we are not heading in the right direction at the senior level.

When I was much younger we had players like Sean Barnwell, Peter Perone, Billy Holder and Grandison Robinson who were all top players at the Caribbean level and Guyana dominated the region.

Most of the players drop out once they finish the junior level now and the distractions are far more than in my time.

It’s disappointing to see how hard players, who have just finished the junior level, drink and party and show little commitment to the sport,” Ramdhani lamented.

“We partied also but we also trained hard and were proud to represent our country and do well. I understand this problem is not only a Badminton issue but one which is affecting many other sports in Guyana…its maybe a cultural thing among today’s youth,” Ramdhani opined.

“On the distaff side,

players like Corrine Thomas, Amanda Lowe, Sharon Latchman Singh and Nichola Devers were among the good junior players in the 1980s,” added Gokarn.

Gokarn believes the University of Guyana schedule is also a reason for not more players playing seriously at the senior level.

He was the only Level 3 Badminton Coach in the in Guyana.

Those were inserts from the last interview I did with Gokarn who is gone too soon. It’s frightening how many people I knew personally have died in the last month.

I first met Gokarn as a teenager, he was four years older than I was and he was one of senior players at Yonnex Badminton Club.

My sister was a player, while Cricketer Glen Robinson’s brother also played there and Glen and I would go there during the rainy season and ‘knock up’ with the players to keep in shape since both of us were members of the Guyana U19 team at that time.

I remember living three houses from Emily in Peter’s Hall on the East Bank just after I had gotten married and after Gokarn married Emily we became friends.

It was at Badminton that I met Sean Barnwell and Coreen Thomas who were the Caribbean Men and Women’s champions and became friends with Amada Lowe, Sharon Lathmansingh and many others of whom I am still friends with today.

I remember after a Badminton session at Queen’s College when Narayan and Priyanna were much younger, rain was pouring and they were taking two players home and seven of us squeezed into the car, some of us soaking wet.

I have seen his two kids grow up from babies and there are some who say Gokarn was in the sports because of his Kids, but he had been coaching long before his kids even started playing Badminton.

Gokarn reminds me of one my closest friends, Neezam Hafiz. Neezam was my captain at Primary School, Malteenoes, Demerara and Guyana in cricket.

Neezam died when the World Trade Centre in New York was destroyed.

Neezam was always full of himself and had super neat hairstyle and a ‘Star Boy’ look, the same as Gokarn.

Since he moved to Canada we have drifted apart but he would call or Facebook me when his kids did well for me to write about it in the papers.

Gokarn was a wonderful Ambassador for Badminton but he was also a person who changed the lives of many young Boys and Girls and very proud father.

Narayan and Priyanna, when you guys win medals, your dad would be smiling down on you and boasting to those over the ‘other side’ that I taught them to do that.

RIP Gokarn…gone but not forgotten.
