One month later… EPA yet to speak on the ‘oil spill’

Yesterday marked one month since a ‘minor’oil spill occurred at the Liza Two operation in the Stabroek Block. For those who may not know, the second oil ship started up production only in February of this year.

As though it wasn’t offensive enough that the Guyanese people had to learn of this spill through ExxonMobil, our so called independent regulator- the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) - is yet to issue a report on its findings.

Perhaps they are hoping that this matter will be swept under the proverbial rug but Guyanese demand answers.

Tell us, was it really one barrel of oil that was spilled? Or are you hiding secrets for this giant, even our Government is afraid of? Are you really functioning on this nation’s behalf, or for ExxonMobil?

YOUMAN NABI MESSAGES

‘Stand against injustice, victimization and discrimination’ - AFC says in Youman Nabi message

The Alliance for Change has called on Guyanese here and abroad to stand against injustice, victimisation and discrimination in a message to mark Youman Nabi.

“The AFC greets all Guyanese especially our Muslim brothers and sisters on Youman Nabi, a holy day in the Muslim calendar that marks both the birth and death anniversaries of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace

Be Upon Him).”

The Party said Youman Nabi is a time when Muslims reflect on the life and teachings of the Prophet and renew their resolve to be more like the Prophet- doing what is right and good and rejecting that which is wrong.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a staunch defender of the oppressed and a fighter for justice and

equality.

“Today in Guyana, so many of our brothers and sisters cry out in vain for justice for loved ones who have been murdered or abused.

Many of our brothers and sisters are being deprived of a fair share in the economic pie because of their ethnicity, political affiliation, geographic location, and social status.

These are things which Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) fought against and which today, we must fight against. As we commemorate the life and death of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Alliance For Change encourages all Guyanese, at home and in the diaspora to stand against injustice, victimization and discrimination,” the Party message ended.

PPP: Let’s reflect on the life and teaching of the Prophet

On the occasion of Youman Nabi, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has extended best wishes to all Guyanese, particularly the Muslim communities here in Guyana and across the Diaspora.

In a message, the PPP/C said Youman Nabi is very dear to our Muslim brothers and sisters as both the birth and death anniversaries of Islam’s Holy Prophet Mohammad are observed.

Its significance offers many pertinent lessons in

humility, contentment, respect, and love among mankind.

According to the PPP/C in reflecting on the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet there are also universal lessons for

forgiveness and tolerance. Our Party firmly believes that the messages from these lessons offer much guidance and if heeded by all can aid in the realization of peace, love, and brotherhood across the world. Our national festivals

and holidays continue to be that vital conduit of togetherness, tolerance, and the forging of unity as we work collectively towards achieving the national motto of one people with a common destiny.

PNCR: Use life of Prophet Muhammad as an inspiration to change

Today, we witnessed another Youman Nabi in our beautiful country Guyana. It is a time when we reflect on the birth of the last Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

righteousness, which became the way of life that mankind resort to in solving many of society’s present problems. In fact, the Prophet’s life is being used as a way of life for all Muslims and even nonMuslims. His teachings are referred to as a guide to uniting the world in love and harmony.

valiantly against injustices, and took care of the less fortunate.

In Guyana, as we strive to become One People, One Nation, and One Destiny, we are blessed to enjoy a high level of religious freedom and tolerance.

The record of the world shows that Muhammed, since his birth in 570 CE, lived and promulgated excellence in character and the best treatment towards women among other traits.

Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was seen as the personification of

It is noteworthy that Prophet Muhammad died in the year 632, but he spent his entire adult life teaching and practicing brotherhood and unity, kindness and forgiveness. It is against that backdrop that today in Guyana it is most appropriate that we reflect on the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) in resolving our issues that are decaying the moral fabric of our society such as, racism, discrimination, oppression and disrespect to our women, as we know he fought

And so today, here again on this special day of Youman Nabi, another perfect opportunity presents itself for us to remind ourselves as a country that there is hope and that we can make the effort to treat our people with respect and dignity.

Let us use the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) as an inspiration for change so that we can be united as a people living in harmony.

We wish all of Guyanese at home and in the Diaspora, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters, a Happy Youman Nabi 2022.

Iyer, Kishan power India to 7-wicket win over South Africa

RANCHI, India (AP)Shreyas Iyer scored his second ODI hundred as India beat South Africa by seven wickets yesterday with 25 balls to spare.

Iyer finished with his highest ODI score of 113 not out and put on 161 runs with Ishan Kishan (93) for the third wicket as India eased to 2823 in 45.5 overs in the second one-day international.

Earlier, half-centuries from Aiden Markram (79) and Reeza Hendricks (74) had helped South Africa to reach

278-7 after it won the toss and chose to bat.

The three-match series is level at 1-1. South Africa won the opener by nine runs.

Iyer was named player of the match but could be in doubt for the series-decider in Delhi on Tuesday after cramping during the game.

“The wicket was playing well when I went in,” Iyer said. “Ishan and I wanted to play the ball on merit and build a partnership. It worked out well for us. I will know about the final game on reaching Delhi.”

Chasing 279, India lost stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan (13) early.

Shubman Gill scored 28 before offering a return catch to Kagiso Rabada (1-59).

Iyer and Kishan came together at 48-2 and their partnership swung the match India’s way.

Kishan set the pace with four fours and seven sixes to entertain the crowd. He reached his half-century off 60 deliveries.

The pair helped India reach 200 in 33.3 overs.

Kishan fell short of his first ODI hundred, but Iyer got to the three-figure mark off 103 balls. He hit 15 fours and faced 111 deliveries.

Iyer and Sanju Samson (30 not out) put on 73 for the undefeated fourth wicket and polished off the remaining runs with 4.1 overs to spare.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj took 3-38 in his 10 overs to restrict the Proteas. He bowled opener Quinton de Kock for 5 runs and left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (154) dismissed Janneman Malan (25) to leave South Africa 40-2. Markram then put on 129 runs with Hendricks for the third wicket to rescue South Africa’s innings.

Siraj struck to remove Hendricks and South Africa lost momentum.

Markram put on 46 runs with Heinrich Klaasen (30) before both were dismissed in three deliveries.

David Miller scored 35 not out off 34 balls but South Africa finished with a sub-par score.

“We didn’t expect dew to be such a factor here and that’s why we had opted to bat. We thought the track would get slower and lower,” stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj said. “But it got easier to bat after the 30th over due to the dew.”

Scores: India 282 for 3 (Shreyas 113*, Kishan 93) beat South Africa 278 for 7 (Markram 79, Hendricks 74, Siraj 3-38) by seven wickets.

Barbora Krejcikova and Iga Swiatek embrace after a stunning come-from-behind victory over the world number one Swiatek in Ostrava.

AFP - Barbora Krejcikova clinched a second successive WTA title with a stunning come-from-behind victory over world number one Iga Swiatek in the Ostrava final yesterday.

The world number 23 triumphed 5-7, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to add the Czech trophy to her victory in Tallinn last weekend.

Krejcikova’s success snapped French and US Open champion Swiatek’s 10-final win streak and gave the 26-year-old Czech a fifth career singles title.

Swiatek, who had racked up her 60th win of the season

on Saturday, went into Sunday’s final having won both her previous meetings with Krejcikova.

The 21-year-old Pole won in straight sets on the hard courts of Miami last year before a three-set victory on the clay of Rome two months later. Yesterday, Krejcikova took the tough route to victory having trailed 5-1 in the opening set before battling back to claim the match in three hours and 16 minutes.

For Swiatek, it was just her second career defeat in 12 finals, and first in three years.
