Recenteventshave highlighted the h i g h r i s k involved in oil and gas production, but to ensure a sustainable world for generations to come, petroleum companies have been urged to step up their game when it comes to s a f e g u a r d i n g t h e environment.

Delivering this charge wasExecutiveDirectorofthe International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP), Iman Hill – the keynote speaker at the Guyana Basins Summit (GBS) that opened on TuesdayatthePegasusSuites and Corporate Centre, in Georgetown.

The GBS is a three-day event aimed at uniting key stakeholders in the energy sector to forge business collaborations.

Bothlocalcompaniesand international firms are attending the event which is being hosted by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) with the aim of exploring new areas of

investmentinthecountry IOGPistheindustrybody that represents the global oil and gas industry The organisation has more than 2000 experts from over 80 member organisations, inclusive of 25 national oil companies, to help ensure safe,efficientandsustainable energy supply and more importantly, to enable a low carbonfuture.

H ill during her presentation alluded to the three pillars of building a sustainable oil and gas industrywhenshepointedto the important role of the energy sector in maintaining asafeenvironment.

In a specific address to the oil companies in the auditorium she said, “In this industry, you have an obligation to bring considerable know how, skills, innovation, technology and investment powertocreateasustainable worldthatwewanttoseefor our children and their children and if everyone pulls together, if we all play ourpartincludingtheoiland gas producers then I believe wecanfindtherightpathand then there will be a very

successfulindustryhere.”

In highlighting the importance of safe operations, she pointed out thatwhenthings“gowrong” inthe“highriskindustry”in which they operate lives can be lost and families devastated.

Industry experts and potential investment partners participating in the three day Guyana Basins Summit (GBS) which opened at the Pegasus Suites and Corporate Centre on Tuesday all agree that the country's success with its petro dollars lies in the strengthening of its health, education, and infrastructure industries as well as its human capital.Therewasalsounanimous agreement that Guyana must invest in renewables such as solar power so that its efforts towards diversificationcanbeachieved.

Specifically underscoring these key points during the opening of the summit were Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, Mark Berman; Gerry GouveiaJr.,SeniorVicePresident at the Georgetown Chamber of CommerceandIndustry;Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin, Vice Chancellor at the University of Guyana; Angus Young, Regional Head of Investment Banking and New Markets at NCB Capital Markets Limited; and Lorena Salazar, Chief of Operations and GuyanaCountryRepresentativeat the Inter- American Development Bank(IDB).

TheIDBofficialsaid,“Guyana is making a good decision with movingtodiversification.

Thecountryhassignedamajor agreementwiththegovernmentof Guyanatofundeightsolarprojects across the country We are interested in seeing how we can supportthegovernmentnotjustin oil and gas but with the other industries…”

Additionally, the IDB official said it is important for Guyana to notbepreoccupiedwithoilandgas and the revenues to come but to also consider careful investments initsfuture.

“The future of the country is the people of the country,” the officialsaid.“SoGuyananeedsto considerwhataretheskill-setsthat will be needed in the future. Guyana also needs to tap the best people to help develop the resourcesinaresponsiblewayand ensure that the opportunities for prosperitymovebeyondthecoast, that it touches the Indigenous communities.”

She concluded, “We must leave no one behind...”

Security guard files $50 million lawsuit against Detective Bascom

Asecurity guard on Thursdayfileda$50M lawsuit against police detective Sergeant Dion Bascom for naming him as a suspect in the March 2021 execution of Ricardo Fagundesknown'PaperShorts'.

Incourtdocumentsseenbythis publication, Mark Richmond is being represented by attorney-atlaw Rajendra Poonai. He is suing the detective for defamatory remarks he made about him on FacebookonAugust11,12,13and 19.

Richmond in the documents claimedthathehasbeenworkingas a security checker at Mohamed Enterprise for seven years and is a devout Muslim without any criminalrecord.

He is suing Bascom on the grounds that the public statements he made on Facebook are untrue, dangerous, malicious, unfair, unsubstantiated, unfounded and baselessandtherebyhavetarnished hisreputation.

Bascom'srefusaltoremovethe post and admit that they are lies, according to the court document, has caused psychological trauma, emotional distress and public

humiliation.

The lawsuit also demands a mandatory injunction for Bascom to permanently delete the defamatorypostshemadeandtobe barred from reproducing, sharing, repeating,postingordisseminating eitherbyvideo,audio,printorother electronicmeans,similarmalicious statementsaboutRichmond.

But Bascom in a yet another Facebook post on Monday made it clear that millions in dollars of lawsuits or multiple cybercrime charges will not change his position that there is evidence implicatingRichmondinthekilling of Paper Shorts, moments after he stepped out of a popular nightspot onMainStreet,Georgetown.

A Venezuelan woman on September 26 last was reportedly lured into a trap by a man to be gang raped at Second Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven. Region Seven detectives were able to capture three of the alleged perpetrators and they were on Monday charged for the offence while a fourth suspect remains at large.

In an unexpected turn of events, the mother of the four year old girl, who according to reports was hospitalised at the New Amsterdam Hospital after mistakenly ingesting poison from a Pepsi bottle, has confessed to feeding the poisonous substance to the child.

Againstthatbackground, Lowsaidthattheopposition calls on the government to urgently introduce an electricity subsidy for lowincomehouseholds.

In this scheme, he explained that households whose total monthly light bill is less than a specified dollar amount (a cap) will not be required to pay the Guyana Power and Light Inc.(GPL).

He said the government will stand the costs and compensateGPLforthetotal amountforgone.

“Thecapmustbechosen to cover as many low income households as possible. Those whose light bills are above the cap will

continue to pay GPL as per thenormfornow,”Lowsaid.

He stressed the advantages of this proposed subsidyeffectivelytargeting those who are most in need ofassistance.

He said, “As the scheme will use the existing GPL b i l l i n g s y s t e m , administrative costs to delivery benefits will be minimalforthegovernment; and participation costs nonexistentforbeneficiaries;the use of a cap can incentivize households to become more energy conscious in using electricity, and benefits are predictable and continuous (notone-off).”

“Now that President Ali and his ministers have hopefullysettleddownfrom their overindulgences in national fetes, the APNU+AFC here reminds themoftheseriouspressures and hardships still faced by theGuyanesepeople.Asthe next government, we have crafted and will implement these and other measures to guarantee every Guyanese a high quality of life,” Low asserted.

In June this year, the APNU+AFC recommended that, “The government should ensure gas prices do not increase above a determined level by compensating suppliers for any price increases where the excise tax reductions have already been exhausted. This will help to bring prices down across a wide basket of goods, thereby easing the cost-oflivingcrisis.”

The measure, according to the APNU+AFC, has found support in many quarters of our society except for the PPP government.
