Clearing the way for gas-to-shore project

Today’s divisiveness is all business

TGovernment offering $1-4 million per acre to those in the direct pathway of the Wales Gas-to-Energy project(GTE). ResidentsinCanalPolder,Crane, andother surroundingareasontheWestDemeraraarehavingnoneof it,andarenowseizingtheopportunitiesthatcometheirway tovoicetheirconcerns, alarms, anddisagreements.

All Guyanese want cheap electricity, but not when their livelihoods and way of existence are disrupted, and the compensationfiguresarrivedandleavethemfeelingseverely shortchanged. Bytheconsiderationsofthosetobeimpacted, this does not simply boil down to the mere matter of the marketvalueofthelandtheyoccupy, andnothingmore. As far as residents are concerned, there is much more than marketvalueoftheirlandthatisinvolved.

ThisisnotsimplyofclearingthewayfortheWalesGTE by removing area residents from their homes and spaces, usingtheprovisionsinlaw, andgivingthemmoneyinreturn. The residents are not just homeowners, so that they receive whatisconsideredbyGovernmenttobeafairpricefortheir lot, andtheymoveontostartoversomewhereelse. Itisnot assimpleasthat, butfarfromit. Itinvolvesownershipand self-employment,hiringoutoneselfforwages,longstanding family holdings, and the anguish of wrenching disruptions fromallthatisknown.

The Government insists that it desires to be fair to all involved, especially those immediately impacted. But, as Attorney General (AG),Anil Nandlall, SC, pointed out, the compensation offered must be fair to the Government, too. The AG also noted that every effort will be made by Government (and operators) to avoid affecting private property, through the creation of so-called ‘buffer zones’so that GTE works do not interfere with residents’ space and way of life. Though compassionate sounding, the AG apparently ignored, or gave short thrift, to features usually associatedwiththesekindsofmassivedevelopments.

For instance, noise pollution from all that heavy duty equipmentandmachineryconstantlyonthemovetopushthe projectforward.

Another would be the resulting dust and other types of byproductsthatfollowfromsuchoperations. Whatpricecan bebuiltinto, oroffered, forhealthandqualityoflifeimpacts, the damage to property, and their drop in appeal and value? On the citizens side of this GTE project, what is being articulated goes far beyond the price offered for land consideredtobe‘intheway.’ Onefarmerpointedtothefact that the fair market value of the land does not factor in the earnings that would be lost by having to cease operations. Another expressed concerns over the Government readying to take and pay for half of his land, but wonders what he is going to do, and how he is going to manage, with the remaining half, considering there would be all these GTE activities. The issue of an underground pipeline raises genuinefearsofundetectedseepages, andevenanexplosion. Guyana there is too much at stake to go down as weaklings!

We at Kaieteur News have been doing our best to highlight all that is wrong with this massive oil find that our citizens are losing out on.

We have bent over backwards to show Guyanese the dangers that lurk, not just because we know that we are being cheated out of our oil wealth by the foreign companies, with the assistance of our Politicians, but because we know too that if someone does not pay attention to what is happening, there is a high likelihood that we will never truly develop as much as this resources could allow us.

Our Government is not concerned that our oil expenses far outweigh what we receive, and that we may never benefit from that 50 /50 share as a result. They are not concerned that our institutions and human resources are lacking.Yet Government is allowing Exxon to go full steam ahead with its production with no intention to renegotiate the contract. Our environment is still not secured, yet we are docile in our response. Guyana there is too much at stake to go down as weaklings!

Iran protests: Supreme leader blames unrest on US and Israel

(BBC) - Iran’s supreme leader has blamed the US and Israel for the protests sweeping the country following the death of a woman whilst in police custody.

In his first public comments on the unrest, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said “riots” had been “engineered” by Iran’s archenemies and their allies.

The protests are the biggest challenge to his rule for a decade, and he urged security forces to be ready for more. The US said it was “appalled” by the violent response to the protests.

The UK echoed the sentiment, summoning Iran’s most senior diplomat in London on Monday, to tell their leaders in Tehran that “instead of blaming external actors for the unrest, they should take responsibility for their actions and listen to the concerns of their people”.

Mahsa Amini, 22, fell into a coma hours after being detained by morality police on 13 September in Tehran for allegedly breaking the strict law requiring women to cover their hair with a hijab, or headscarf. She died three days later.

Her family has alleged that

officers beat her head with a baton and banged her head against one of their vehicles. The police have said there is no evidence of any mistreatment and that she suffered “sudden heart failure”.

Women have led the protests that began after Ms Amini’s funeral, waving their headscarves in the air or setting them on fire to chants of “Woman, life, freedom” and “Death to the dictator”a reference to Ayatollah Khamenei.

Addressing a graduation ceremony of police and armed forces cadets on Monday, the supreme leader said Ms Amini’s death “broke our hearts”.

“But what is not normal is that some people, without proof or an investigation, have made the streets dangerous, burned the Quran, removed hijabs from veiled women and set fire to mosques and cars,” he added, without mentioning any specific incidents.

The ayatollah, who has the final say on all state matters, asserted that foreign powers had planned “rioting” because they could not tolerate Iran “attaining strength in all spheres”.

Health Ministry records two new

The Health Ministry on Monday reported that within the last 24hour period, two more new COVID-19 cases have been recorded across the country bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 71,351.

infections

With no new death, the Ministry via its dashboard revealed that three persons are in institutional isolation, 65 are in home isolation and to date, a total of 70,002 persons have recovered from the virus.

‘The world must halt deforestation, use...’

From page 14 Session, offers three concrete, interconnected solutions.

Firstly, Qu said halting deforestation is “key to tackling the climate crisis by both cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 14 percent and safeguarding more than half the Earth’s terrestrial biodiversity.” In addition, another solution is planting trees, restoring productive capacities, and improving ecosystem resilience.

ares of the world’s forest and farm land. He said they must be at the center of efforts towards sustainable agrifood systems, of which forests and trees are an integral part.

This COFO Session will advance the global forest agenda on climate change, sustainable production and consumption, restoration, biodiversity, and finance and provide technical recommendations on emerging forestry and policy issues, Qu added.

for food security and nutrition that protect forests and trees.

Thirdly, he stressed the importance of using forests and trees sustainably and building green value chains. “Wood and bushes are a very valuable renewable resource, and an important source of carbon-neutral and even carbon-positive materials.

Wild-harvested forest foods improve food security and the nutrition of people living nearby and beyond,” Qu said.

Qu also stressed the importance of smallholders, local communities and Indigenous Peoples, who own or manage nearly 1 billion hect-

Taking into consideration both FAO’s flagship report, The State of the World’s Forests 2022: Forest pathways for green recovery and building inclusive resilient and sustainable economies, and the outcomes of the XV World Forestry Congress held in May 2022 in the Republic of Korea, the Committee will review FAO’s forestry work under FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-2031.

Ongoing work by FAO on resilient and sustainable economies, the linkages between agriculture and forestry, and forest solutions for combating climate change will also be on the agenda.

In this regard, Qu highlighted that for the first time agriculture and forestry were being discussed as a joint agenda item, which is an important step to identify and scale-up win-win solutions

FAO, together with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has been supporting over 60 countries in reducing deforestation and forest degradation, through the UN-REDD programme.

The Organization’s work on forest law enforcement, governance and trade help countries combat illegal logging and promote trade in timber, which is sustainably produced by small-scale enterprises.

FAO’s Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme is spearheading efforts to ensure optimal health for people, animals and the environment as part of a One Health approach, while strengthening wildlife management and enhancing food security of local communities. Improving forest-based livelihoods,

More than 25 million people in 30 countries have directly or indirectly benefitted from this initiative, including during the current COVID-19 pandemic. FAO’s Action Against Desertification in support of Africa’s Great Green Wall Initiative has helped to restore the productivity of degraded lands and the livelihoods of local communities in the Sahel. Its support in ten countries has resulted in over 56 000 hectares of land being restored.

FAO, together with UNEP and the Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, supports governments committed to restore 100 million hectares of degraded lands, sequester 250 million tons of CO2 and create 10 million green jobs under Africa’s Great Green Wall Initiative.

Held on the margins of the Committee on Forestry, the 8th World Forest Week, from 29 September to 7 October, is a series of special events that bring FAO Members, partner organizations, leaders, scientists, women and youth to discuss forestry’s most pressing issues. The theme of this year’s World Forest Week is Growing a better planet.

Several French cities to ban Qatar World Cup fan zones, giant screens

PARIS, (Reuters) - Several major French cities including Lille, Strasbourg and Bordeaux said they will not organise fan zones or put up giant outdoor screens to show Qatar World Cup soccer matches in protest against ecological and humanitarian issues.

Leftist and ecologist mayors in those cities said the loss of immigrant workers’ lives during construction of the stadia in Qatar and the energy that will be wasted to cool the sports arenas means they would not promote the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 event.

“It would be a farce if we were to be complicit with the humanitarian and ecological abuses that are embodied by this World Cup,” ecologist Bordeaux mayor Pierre Hurmic said on BFM TV on Monday.

The small but wealthy Gulf state has faced intense criticism from human rights groups and media over its treatment of migrant workers, who along with other foreigners comprise the bulk of the country’s population.

A Guardian newspaper analysis in Feb. 2021 concluded 6,500 South Asian migrants had died in Qatar since 2010 and the International Labour Organisation has said Qatar is not adequately reporting worker deaths. Qatar’s World Cup organisers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), have disputed the claim that “the tournament has cost thousands of people their lives”.

The government has said its labour system is a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited.

“It would be really

difficult to have a party while forgetting the dead bodies and the humanitarian situation in the aberration that is the World Cup in Qatar,” Hurmic said, adding that he would not allow giant screens and fan zones. He said that at a time when French citizens are being asked to be frugal with energy it would be “incongruous” to

take part in an energy-wasting event such as an airconditioned World Cup in a hot desert country.

On Saturday, the leftist mayor of northern French city Lille said it would not show World Cup matches on giant screens to demonstrate its disapproval of the event being held in Qatar.
