Torturous days are ahead DEAR EDITOR, The circumstances that have led to the calamitous abandonment of the recall of Parliament are as puzzling as they are distressing. How could grown men and women, politicians elected by the people claiming to have their best interest and country at heart, have allowed the situation to come to such a mess? The damage caused by this latest catastrophe could prove irreparable for the country and no matter what happens now, we are convinced that there are torturous days ahead for the people. We are of the opinion that when word first broke that the minority PPP government would delay the recall of Parliament, APNU, being the main opposition, should have proactively sought the support of the AFC and ask the Speaker to reconvene Parliament. Instead, what the people saw and read were confusing statements from APNU. The leader of APNU claims that he would support the no confidence motion but his actions proved that is not true. He has not only called for local government elections, but is also protesting almost daily against the PPP for it. Some of APNU supporters are
angry and disgruntled with such lack of focus and poor leadership. If APNU is serious about supporting the no confidence motion then it should ask the Speaker to recall Parliament. It is our under-standing that the majority opposition has the authority to ask the speaker to reconvene Parliament. There are indications that the people, including many APNU supporters, have stated in no uncertain terms that they have lost faith and trust in the leadership of APNU. They seem to believe that internal squabbling with the two elected officials at Linden, the shooting incident at its Congress in July and pettiness are destroying the party’s image. They are no longer interested in APNU. In their eyes, APNU has become irrelevant. Here was a situation that required creative and extraordinary leadership from APNU, but its leaders are now boxed into a corner, and many of its members are leaving in droves. As the situation now stands, APNU has seemingly lost an enormous amount of support, while the AFC may well be secretly smiling. Asquith Rose and Harish Singh
THE POWERS THAT BE
DEAR SIR, Minister Robert Persaud, when he was Minister of Agriculture, was featured in a national newspaper as saying that he went to Suriname to negotiate with his Dutch counterpart to re-open the illegal backtrack. It has been an ongoing thing for people to be picked up in Suriname and sent back to Guyana and charged for leaving Guyana illegally. Most have been fined and until recently a few were sent to prison. These persons, like myself, were led to believe that the backtrack was ok. Then they go to jail for using it. An employee of GUYSUCO, from Skeldon estate was fired for hitting a manager, which action resulted from an altercation between the two and with some undue influence on the part of the manager. Why was such a situation allowed to happen? Now is it ok for the manager or any supervisor to mouth off and call persons in their employ names and get away with it because the junior must be respectful? That Manager ought to have conducted himself better. Then the most recent abuse by a Chief Executive Officer came from our very own Member of Parliament, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, at the Port Mourant Hospital when
he scolded a pregnant nurse ,who could not (because of her ill health) go on an ambulance ride to Skeldon Hospital. This nurse was about four months’ pregnant and was deemed medically unfit to work that day so she went home after Dr Khirodar assigned her to make the trip. Lo and behold the nurse was faced with disciplinary action by this very authoritative Dr. Khirodar and intense abuse by the MP Dr Mahadeo, CEO of the Berbice Regional Health Authority. Then there is a matter in the court at Whim where a supervisor was involved in an altercation with a cane cutter and he, the supervisor attacked the cane cutter in the field. Now this poor cane cutter is suspended from his job and the supervisor is still working. I will end by relating my own experience with Minister Jennifer Westford. She held my transport for over one year after I had pledged it as surety for my daughter to leave the country for three weeks to go to Canada.
My daughter studied medicine in Cuba on a Scholarship and so she was bonded to serve the country for five years. My transport was ledged to ensure she returned to Guyana. She returned on April 8, 2013 and Minister Westford refused to return my transport, saying that my daughter had to submit her passport to have it stamped. Now getting a stamp in her passport was not my concern but it was the Minister ’s because they neglected to have all passports stamped and some persons got away and without paying back the money spent on their studies.
In short it is an administrative screw-up and Westford was trying damage control by holding on to my transport. Now I made several attempts to get my transport back and all failed. My daughter’s contractual obligation to this Government ended on September 6, 2014 and so I was given my transport. After Minister Westford refused to give me my transport I went to the court and reported it ‘misplaced’. I then made an application for what is describes as “loss grosse” and in three days I had a new transport which I used to sell my property. Charrandass Persaud

AG’s uncle temporarily gags KNews Accused of being a part of a plot to defraud the state of millions payable in duties in order to remain in possession of a Luxury Mercedes SUV, Kamal Mangal—uncle of Attorney General, Anil Nandlall—has successfully secured an interim injunction effectively gagging this publication from reporting on anything in relation to his vehicle. The interim injunction was ordered by Justice Diana Insanally, and relates to three articles published under the captions: “Remigrant who imported Mercedes Benz SUV says…’I don’t know I have to live in Guyana’…spends more time out than in’; ‘Remigrant was not in Guyana when vehicle was cleared, registered –in two years, spends 20 months overseas’ and ‘Duty free concessions…GRA fails to monitor remigrant …allows AG’s uncle to dodge taxes.’ Apart from an injunction seeking to prevent Kaieteur News’, Publisher, Glenn Lall or Editor-in-Chief, Adam Harris from further publishing anything in relation to the vehicle, Mangal is also seeking several million dollars in damages. Lall has since indicated that this publication will be contesting the injunction granted as well as the lawsuit filed, saying that “no one should be prevented from publishing the truth.” Mangal is seeking in excess of $10M for each of
…seeks millions through lawsuit
Kamal Mangal the articles published as well as in excess of $10M for aggravated or exemplary damages and any further costs that the court orders. In his affidavit of support, Mangal who is being represented by Attorney-atLaw, Sase Gunraj, claims that the articles over which he has sued, “conveyed the clear impression that I was engaged in unlawful activities, defrauding the Republic of Guyana of taxes and engaged in criminal conduct.” According to Mangal in his writ, the words in the articles were understood to mean that he dishonestly and intentionally defrauded the Republic of Guyana of revenue; engaged in evasion of taxes; benefited from tax exemptions to which he was not entitled; failed to comply with the terms of conditions of the grant of tax exemptions granted by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and further that he has
committed a criminal offence or several criminal offences. Mangal in his application to the court said that upon migration to the United States of America, he was employed at several places and with his earnings he invested in several residential properties and business ventures, from which he earns an income. He further states that during that period he travelled to Guyana on numerous occasions, during which time he began exploring investment opportunities locally with a view to re-migrating. This decision, he said, was taken in 2011 and as a result he began making preparation. To this end, Mangal claims that he renovated and made modifications to one of his properties located in Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, to be used as his place of dwelling upon his return. According to Mangal, he applied to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a grant of remigrant status, so as to import personal effects, household items and a motor vehicle. This application, according to Mangal, was granted by the Ministry in September 2012 and the following month, he received a letter from GRA granting him tax exemptions on a motor vehicle and personal and household items. Mangal said that on November 2, 2012, the vehicle in question was registered in his name by GRA and assigned registration number PPP 9090. In his writ, Mangal is adamant that he has complied with all conditions specified when he was granted the remigrant status and tax
exemptions. The matter which was heard before Justice Insanally, has been set for a November 18 hearing. According to Mangal in his claim, he is fearful that unless restrained Harris, Lall and the National Media and Publishing Company will continue what he calls a malicious attack against him. He gave the court an undertaking to pay for all or any damage Lall, Harris or the National Media and Publishing Company may suffer if it is subsequently determined that the injunction was wrongly granted. According to Mangal, he is the owner of movable and immovable property located in Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, valued in excess of $100M among other properties and as such has sufficient means to satisfy any award of damages the court may award against him.

Navin Chandarpal’s death is a significant blow to Guyana President Donald Ramotar has described the passing of former Agriculture Minister and long-serving executive of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Navin Chandarpal as a significant blow to Guyana. President Ramotar, on behalf of the Government and his family, has extended sympathy to the family, relatives and friends of the late Presidential Advisor on Sustainable Development. The Head of State said Chandarpal’s death is a significant loss to Guyana, noting that he served the country with distinction, first
- Pres. Ramotar as a parliamentarian and then as a Government Minister. The President stated that Chandarpal’s death is also a significant loss to the PPP, for which he served as an executive member for many years, noting that he showed the fortitude of a true fighter for battling his illness to the end. He noted that Chandarpal, who died early yesterday morning at his home after a one-year battle with cancer, has been a very close friend and will be deeply missed. Chandarpal served in the seventh and eighth

Iraqi peshmerga fighters head Australia bans travel from Ebolafor Syria to fight Islamic State hit countries; U.S. isolates troops
Kurdish peshmerga fighters prepare before leaving their base on the outskirts of Arbil in northern Iraq, on their way to the Syrian town of Kobani. (Reuters) Iraqi peshmerga fighters headed for the Syrian town of Kobani on Tuesday to help fellow Kurds repel an Islamic State advance that has defied U.S.led air strikes and become an important test of the coalition’s ability to combat the Sunni insurgents. Kobani, nestled on the border with Turkey, has been besieged by Islamic State for more than a month. Weeks of air strikes on the insurgents’ positions and the deaths of hundreds of their fighters have failed to break the siege. Islamic State has caused international alarm by capturing large expanses of Iraq and Syria, declaring an Islamic “caliphate” erasing borders between the two and slaughtering or driving away Shi’ite Muslims, Christians and other communities who do not share their ultra-radical brand of Sunni Islam. The Islamic State (IS) has threatened to massacre Kobani’s defenders in an assault which has sent almost 200,000 Syrian Kurds fleeing to Turkey, and triggered a call to arms from Kurds across the region. Hemin Hawrami, a senior official in the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iraq, wrote on his Twitter feed that peshmerga combatants were flying from Arbil airport in northern Iraq to Turkey, from where they would travel overland to Kobani. Saleh Moslem, co-chair of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), said later that around 150 peshmerga had entered Turkey from Iraq and were expected to reach the area of Kobani later on Tuesday
night. A Kurdish television channel showed footage of what it said was a convoy of peshmerga vehicles in northern Iraq loaded with weapons and on their way to the besieged town. “We welcome the deployment of peshmerga fighters and weapons from the Kurdistan Region to Kobani, which began this evening,” Brett McGurk, a deputy envoy tasked by U.S. President Barack Obama with building a coalition against IS, said on Twitter. The Iraqi Kurdish region’s parliament voted last week to deploy some peshmerga to Syria although a Kurdish government spokesman later said they would not engage in direct combat in Kobani but rather provide artillery support. Kurdistan’s Minister of Peshmerga, Mustafa Sayyid Qader, told local media on Tuesday that no limits had been set to how long the forces would remain in Kobani. The fighting around Kobani has exacerbated the flow of refugees from Syria’s 3 1/2-year civil war, with more than three million people already sheltering in neighboring countries including Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Jordan’s foreign minister warned on Tuesday the huge demand for housing, schools, jobs and health care generated by the refugees meant Syria’s neighbors were reaching the limits of their ability to cope. GROUND TROOPS Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said earlier
that air strikes alone would not be enough to push back the insurgents and that only the peshmerga and moderate Syrian rebel forces could oust Islamic State from Kobani. “Saving Kobani, retaking Kobani and some area around Kobani from ISIS, there’s a need for a military operation,” he said in an interview with the BBC broadcast on Tuesday. But he made clear neither Turkey nor Western allies would commit troops. “If they (international coalition) don’t want to send their ground troops, how can they expect Turkey to send Turkish ground troops with the same risks on our border?” Davutoglu said. Turkish officials have rebuffed international criticism over their reluctance to do more to help Kobani’s beleaguered Kurdish defenders, whom they accuse of being linked to the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has fought a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state.
(Reuters) - Australia became the first developed country on Tuesday to shut its borders to citizens of the countries worst-hit by the West African Ebola outbreak, a move those states said stigmatized healthy people and would make it harder to fight the disease. Australia’s ban on visas for citizens of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea followed decisions by the U.S. military to quarantine soldiers returning from an Ebola response mission and some U.S. states to isolate aid workers. The United Nations said such measures could discourage vital relief work, making it harder to stop the spread of the deadly virus. “Anything that will dissuade foreign trained personnel from coming here to West Africa and joining us on the frontline to fight the fight would be very, very unfortunate,” Anthony Banbury, head of the U.N. Ebola Emergency Response Mission (UNMEER), told Reuters in the Ghanaian
capital Accra. Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf urged Australia to reconsider its travel ban. “Anytime there’s stigmatization, there’s quarantine, there’s exclusion of people, many of whom are just normal, then those of us who are fighting this epidemic, when we face that, we get very sad,” she told a news conference. Neighboring Sierra Leone called the Australian move draconian. “It is discriminatory in that ... it is not (going) after Ebola but rather it is ... against the 24 million citizens of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea,” Information Minister Alpha Kanu told Reuters. “Certainly, it is not the right way to go.” The virus has killed almost 5,000 people since
March, mostly in those three countries. Nine U.S. cases have prompted states such as New York and New Jersey to ignore federal advice and quarantine all health workers returning from the region. A Texas nurse who caught Ebola in the United States while treating an infected Liberian patient left hospital on Tuesday after being declared free of the disease. “I’m so grateful to be well, a smiling Amber Vinson, 29, told reporters at Emory University Hospital before hugging the doctors and nurses who treated her for two weeks. The arrival of the disease in the United States has prompted fierce debate there and in other developed countries about the best measures to prevent its spread.

PM agrees to consider CAL penalties Trinidad Guardian Government is looking at imposing a penalty on defaulting passengers on the Tobago airbridge who cancel their tickets. This measure was proposed by a delegation of Tobago House of Assembly officials, led by Chief Secretary Orville London, during yesterday’s meeting with a central Government team. Led by Prime Minister Kamla PersadBissessar, the team included acting Attorney General Prakash Ramadhar, Transport Minister Stephen Cadiz and Trade Minister Vasant Bharath. The meeting, at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, was the first between the sides in over a year. In a media conference afterwards, Persad-Bissessar said the THA delegation expressed concern over passengers booking flights and cancelling, resulting in Caribbean Airlines (CAL) running flights that were not full. She said Bharath was instructed to discuss with stakeholders, including CAL and the Civil Aviation Authority, the possibility of introducing a cancellation fee. “A cancellation should result in some kind of penalty to be charged, something to be looked at, to ensure we fully utilise the aircraft,” the PM said, noting it may also be considered for the seabridge. She said a method was to be explored to avoid duplicate bookings by passengers who later cancel. London, she said, told the meeting he had no difficulty with such a penalty
being imposed, noting that the situation occurs while scores of passengers waiting on standby are denied those empty seats from the cancellations. PersadBissessar said the Cabinet is to meet in special session next month in Tobago and all members of the People’s National Movementcontrolled THA will be invited to discuss issues affecting the island. She said the way forward for internal selfgovernment should be advanced at the meeting, scheduled for mid-November. London said he suggested all stakeholders should meet to advance the matter and no one should stake a claim. “We should stop operating in silos, which is what has been happening. The THA does something, a political party does something, the central Government does something and we end up competing against each other,” he said.
“Once we do it together no single entity could claim it.” In response to a question, London said the issue of Tobago seceding from Trinidad was never an issue for consideration, and the internal self-government process was being developed on the basis that “the sovereign, democratic state of T&T must remain united.” He said if a poll were to be done on the island on the issue of secession, “You would find that maybe less than five per cent of Tobagonians even consider that as a serious option.” During the meeting, London also told PersadBissessar the Tobago Development Minister had been operating in breach of the THA Act. He said the ministry, which is headed by Tobago West MP Dr Delmon Baker, “is operating way in excess of its mandate and the schedule given to it by the Prime Minister. It is undermining the authority and integrity of the THA. “The process is becoming more and more strident as we speak and is creating serious challenges for us in the THA.” In response, the PM said she would investigate, saying she “would not condone illegality and we’d be bound by the law as contained in the THA Act.” Airline sources said Monday that such a fee was common in the industry, and CAL may be the only airline that does not have such a penalty. They suggested that a $50 penalty could be charged for cancellations.
KINGSTON, Jamaica Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States has told the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) that local rights groups are exaggerating claims that they are being persecuted by the State. The IACHR was told yesterday morning that in the last six months human rights groups such as Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) have been threatened with prosecution as they carry out their work. The comments relate to statements by youth minister Lisa Hanna that the State was looking at whether anyone should be held criminally responsible for an unauthorised sexual
education programme administered by JFJ in several children’s homes. However, Programme Manager at the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians All sexual and Gays (J-FLAG), Jaevion Nelson, says such statements appear to be threats towards JFJ for the work it is doing. However, Professor Vasciannie said the State has to make a decision about what children in its care should be exposed to, especially if the material appears to promote activities which are illegal in Jamaica. He denied that the state’s action in the matter amounted to persecution of human rights groups.

SAFETY COMES FIRST I am fearful for the life of Glenn Lall. I know that he is more concerned about the safety of his family and that of his staff than he is about his own life and limb. He has always placed the concerns of others above those of himself. This is why he has been relentless in exposing the rampant corruption and other reprobate actions of the PPP government. Today he faces a most difficult choice. He has to now be more concerned about the safety of his family and that of the dozens of persons who work for him. He has to
determine how to protect all of these persons against a regime that clearly knows no limits. What is he going to do? It is not easy protecting people against the power of the State. How do you protect people from the State when there are inadequate safeguards to do so? It is like a mission impossible. The only defence against State tyranny lies in the people. It is the people of Guyana who have to defend Glenn Lall and Kaieteur News. If the people of Guyana do not come to the defence of Kaieteur News, then Glenn
Lall will be faced with only one choice, and that is close the newspaper down. In fact, I am sure that there are persons who are already advising him to do so, because it seems as if unless he does this, the danger to his family and staff will remain. It is time for a Committee in Defence of Kaieteur News to be formed immediately. Unless this is done, the sort of support that is needed to help those bent on harming Lall, his family and his staff will not be forthcoming. Things have gotten out of hand. We have moved beyond the conspiracy to

muzzle and jail Glenn Lall. There is now a far more ominous threat. The people of Guyana must now come to the rescue of Kaieteur News. A Committee in Defence of Kaieteur News, drawn from a wide cross section of Guyanese, must be immediately formed. International support must be mobilized. Guyanese in the Diaspora must be asked to add their voices to the condemnation of the attacks and plots against this newspaper. There is need to defend Kaieteur News against its
enemies. But more importantly, the readers of this newspaper must form a human shield to protect the staff of Kaieteur News from harm. This is a top priority today. The safety of Lall, his family and the staff of Kaieteur News must be the number one priority. If these things do not happen sooner rather than later, I will ask Glenn Lall to consider shutting down the newspaper, because there will be no other choice left open to him. This newspaper cannot continue to publish given the fears that exist now over the
safety of Lall, his family and that of the staff of Kaieteur News. I reiterate, if these fears persist then the newspaper will have to be closed down. I suppose that people will say that if Kaieteur News closes its doors that the tyrants would have prevailed, because this was what they wanted all along. But what other choice is there other than to close the newspaper down? Safety comes first.

THE FREDDIE KISSOON COLUMN
In any other country, the government would have fallen I would strongly urge all Guyanese to keep in front of their eyes, the big picture in relation to the Anil Nandlall tape. It is the story of a cabal inside the Government of Guyana that came to a decision on what to do with Glenn Lall and the Kaieteur News paper itself. In the coming days, the obsessive talk on this scandal will persist. But the big picture will be lost if we keep Nandlall in the frame as the main culprit. He is not. The chief conspirator in this drama is the cabal. Nandlall is just one of the players who mouthed off to a
journalist he knows well. Why did the Government in less than 24 hours, issue a statement supporting Nandlall? Because the statement was in support of the government itself. Nandlall implicated the President of Guyana in the game of planned attack on KN and Mr. Lall. Nandlall said that the President was in discussion with someone close to Lall and a decision was made that the Kaieteur News would stay away from any attack on the government for one week. On the recording Nandlall
said that not even for a week could Lall have “shut his mouth.” What it meant, then, was firstly, Ramotar wanted the KN to stop attacking the government. To test him they gave him a week to see if he could “cool out.” Secondly, after the passing of the week, and Lall did not play ball, the conspiracy then had to proceed. In both instances, President Ramotar was involved. Why is President Ramotar giving a newspaper a week to stop attacking the government as a standard by
which to judge if the PPP hierarchy could make a deal with him? Why doesn’t Ramotar try that with me? Would they like to give me a week? Give me the week and they will see that in each of those articles for the week all will be filled with the most trenchant criticism of the tyrannical PPP regime, including Ramotar himself. The Anil Nandlall tape, in which it was enunciated that there will be a planned violent attack on Lall and his staff, is the story of an entrapped government. This is not about an entrapped Minister.
I repeat; the context of this thing must be seen as a confrontation with Lall and the leadership of the cabal. Nandlall, in those twenty minutes, spoke in the plural. You have to be completely deaf not to hear him say that the continuous criticism has reached a stage where certain people (note the plural) have now become sensitive. The tape is punctuated with anger by Nandlall himself about the salvoes fired at him. But time and time again in that deadly 20 minutes of rampage, he constantly referred to the plural. Here is another brazen example. He said that people have weapons and that they will use them against KN and Mr. Lall. Who are these people with their weapons? Who are the people that have become sensitive? The answer is simple – the extended cabal which takes in the major political players high up the PPP ladder and inside the Government of Guyana and their close associates. Will the cabal still go through with their war at Saffon Street? I don’t know, because if people die through fire or guns at Kaieteur News in the coming months then I cannot see how the PPP can survive in power. But this I know; now that the plot has been revealed through a secret recording (see Anil Nandlall’s letter, “There’s no right to privacy
Frederick Kissoon known to the laws of Guyana,” in the KN of March 23, 2006, in which he examined the Winston Felix tape scandal and concluded that Felix’s privacy was not invaded by the person who taped him), it would appear that many lives at Kaieteur News may have been spared, and that includes this columnist. The sickening and chilling part of the tape is the part in which it was clearly stated that when the attack comes, if innocents at KN get killed, then that is something that cannot be avoided. In any other country, this tape scandal (notice I did not say Nandlall scandal) would have resulted in the fall of the government. Let’s remind readers of the brutality in that tape. It is about a planned violent attack on the offices of Kaieteur News with the specific purpose of maybe killing Mr. Lall and his staff. Mr. Nandlall made it pellucid that he was referring to people, not an individual. Those people reach high up in the seat of government.

PPP bemoans GECOM’s failure to update public on LGE By Abena Rockcliffe At the People’s Progressive Party’s most recent press conference held on Monday, the Party’s General Secretary, Clement Rohee spoke of yet another set of issues that the Party has with GECOM’s operations. Among them was the absence of updates on certain aspects of preparation. The General Secretary said the PPP has noted that the Chairman of GECOM, Dr. Steve Surujbally, has been making public statements on all aspects of the electoral process and has been “lecturing” the political parties on the Constitution and formulae and principles
for democratic elections and governance. Rohee told media operatives that what the PPP’s executive has observed “in all the media hype by GECOM and its Chairman is the absence of updates on the education of Guyanese in addressing the outstanding issues concerning local government elections.” He said that basically all the PPP has been hearing from the GECOM Chairman is that he needs a window of six months to prepare for Local Government Elections (LGE). Dr. Surujbally has indeed been quoted in sections of the media as saying that all the President has to do is call local government elections
and GECOM will be ready six months after and political parties have nothing else to worry about. Rohee said that absent from the many Public Relations briefs is the blueprint or GECOM‘s roadmap for Local Government Elections. “One would have expected that the 15-plus issues which the PPP raised concerning the preparations for local government elections would have formed a regular stream of communications from GECOM to the public and to the political parties, but this has not happened,” Rohee said. The General Secretary emphasised that these are

issues that the PPP demands GECOM address in a “frank and open manner”. “A simple reminder of the most fundamental issue with regards to the holding of Local Government Elections is that of having an accurate Voters’ List for each constituency,” Rohee said. He said that GECOM was preparing for Local Government Elections since 2009 so one can assume that
these lists are available. “If that is not so, then it’s mind-boggling; how six months will fix what six years did not fix. GECOM must provide direct and specific answers to the populace on these fundamental and critical issues.” Even though Rohee and his Party are not comfortable with GECOM’s state of readiness, the General Secretary did suggest that the
Chairman is not the problem. “I’m not saying we have confidence in Surujbally… I am saying that the process out of which he was appointed, the government had to have confidence in him and thus far there has not been anything to make us shift from that position…We are laying issues before him and expect he will take up these matters,” Rohee told reporters.
Agri Minister highlights need for improved pesticide control Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy yesterday highlighted the need for improved pesticide control, particularly in the light of Guyana’s high suicide rate. Minister Ramsammy said this as he delivered the feature address at the opening ceremony of a three-day “Chemicals and Chemicals Management” workshop being held at Regency Suites, in Hadfield Street, Georgetown. The event is being hosted by the Pesticide and Toxic Chemicals Control Board (PTCCB). The purpose of this seminar is to educate farmers and administrators on the use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals in the agriculture sector. During his address, Dr. Ramsammy related that “while its (pesticides and toxic chemicals) poisonous nature can serve us well, it can also lead to great harm to humanity”. This, in the Minister’s opinion, is the essential reason for regulation. He said that the passage of the Pesticide and Toxic Chemical Control Act and the setting up of the PTCCB in 2001, represented the government’s commitment to implementing proper regulation. However, while regulations are in place, the Minister reiterated that the country should not ignore the
Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy role pesticides play in high suicide rates. “We cannot escape the fact that in our country… these very useful chemicals are being used for suicide” said Dr Ramsammy. He added that “more than 70% of suicide cases are committed through ingestion of toxic chemicals.” According to the Agriculture Minister, part of the reason for the high suicide rates is the lack of
sensitization on the use of toxic chemical in agricultural production. This was further cited as the reason for the Ministry’s Service Provider Education Programme. As part of regulatory measures, Dr Ramsammy explained that education is vital to the prevention of the misuse of pesticides. Recent studies by Dr Bhiro Harry, a psychiatrist attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), showed that the Administrative Regions that are most affected by suicide are Regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. These regions also have the highest output of agricultural products in the country. In addition to this, Dr. Harry found that the most common method of suicide is the ingestion of poisonous substances. Moreover, it was found that females attempt to commit suicide much more than males, while 50% of persons who commit suicide fall between the ages of 12 and 25.

Ramotar defends AG’s threat on KNews mere hours after revelation Mere hours after Publisher of Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall, released a recording of Attorney General Anil Nandlall vocalizing a threat of violent proportions, President Donald Ramotar and the government came out in defence of the Attorney General. In the recording, Nandlall is heard talking about an imminent attack on Kaieteur News that would see the innocent paying for the guilty. He also made an offer of employment to the reporter who he said was working in a “dangerous place”. In the expletive-laden conversation, Nandlall talks of the heightened confrontation with Kaieteur News after the newspaper threatened to release details of his wife.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall
President Donald Ramotar
He goes further; he touts himself as a Kshatryia, pronounced “Chatree”, and unabashedly places himself in a superior social position to former President Bharrat Jagdeo, owner of the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation, Dr Ranjisinghi ‘Bobby’ Ramroop and head of the Privatization Unit, Winston Brassington. However, the government chose to ignore the obvious threats to the publisher and
staff of the newspaper and to come out in support of Nandlall. In a statement, the government sought to accuse the newspaper of manipulating “a private conversation of a Government Minister, whose conversation was illegally recorded, and distorted, and broadcast.” The government’s questionable claim of illegality was not supported by Nandlall during the release of a previous recording some
years ago when Winston Felix was Police Commissioner. (See related story on page 3) “We stand by the Attorney General, as the Government of Guyana goes out of its way to foster peace and goodwill. We believe in the integrity and professionalism of the Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Anil Nandlall, and stand by him,” the government’s statement said. “Today, to our utter consternation, the public listened to a voice recording and was shocked at what the nation heard. Broadcast on social media, the recording contains a distorted, manipulated conversation between a Minister and Leonard Gildarie, a reporter from the Kaieteur News.” The truth is that the recording was unedited and unaltered. Many are now at a loss to understand the government’s assertions. In fact, the government statement does not address the contents of the recording although it admits that the recording was authentic.

GPHC taking steps to increase breast cancer awareness The country’s premier health institution, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), is looking to embrace a keen health worker/patient collaboration in order to raise needful awareness about breast cancer. At least this was the disclosure of Director of Nursing Services, Sister Audrey Cory, during an interview with this publication recently. Her comments come at a time when Guyana and the rest of the world are celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed annually in the month of October. Sister Cory in her deliberations recently pointed to the fact that medical practitioners have been able to ascertain that more young women in Guyana are being inflicted with the life-threatening disease. This development is one that is certainly not unique to Guyana. In fact, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), breast cancer is considered the leading cancer in women, both in the developed and the developing world. The WHO has underscored, too, that the incidence of breast cancer is increasing in the
Nurses in training at the GPHC to better deliver cancer care. developing world due to increased life expectancy, increase in urbanisation, and adoption of western lifestyles. And in order to help address this glaring challenge, Sister Cory vocalised her conviction that there is need for greater awareness, particularly among young women, within
the population. According to her, “this is a good time for women to learn and for nurses to learn too and teach patients.” Currently, nurses of the GPHC, along with others from other health facilities, are undergoing training to better deal with addressing cancer. The training is being facilitated by medical experts
attached to the Organisation for Social and Health Advancement for Guyana (OSHAG), a NonGovernmental Organisation based in New York and also registered here. “We are utilising this opportunity we have; we are maximising on it so that we can help our own patients here in Guyana,” said an
optimistic Sister Cory. It is expected that the local efforts will help to considerably reduce the prevalence of the disease. But according to the WHO, although some risk reduction might be achieved with prevention, these strategies cannot eliminate the majority of breast cancers that develop in low- and middleincome countries where breast cancer is diagnosed in very late stages. Therefore, the WHO has said that early detection in order to improve breast cancer outcome and survival remain the cornerstone of breast cancer control. And the WHO has outlined that early detection of cancer greatly increases the chances for successful treatment. Currently there are two major components of early detection of cancer: education to promote early diagnosis and screening. It has been amplified, too, that even limited resource settings with weak health systems, where breast cancer incidence is relatively low and the majority of women are diagnosed in late stages, have the option to implement early diagnosis programmes based on awareness of early signs and symptoms and prompt referral to diagnosis
and treatment. It has also been pointed out by the WHO that while population-based cancer screening is a much more complex public health undertaking than early diagnosis, it is usually costeffective when done in the context of high-standard programmes that target all the population at risk. This is said to be especially effective in a given geographical area with high specific cancer burden, with everyone who takes part being offered the same level of screening, diagnosis and treatment services. So far the only breast cancer screening method that has proved to be effective is mammography screening, according to the WHO. Mammography screening, though very costly, has been proven to be cost-effective and feasible in countries with good health infrastructure that can afford long-term and organized population-based screening programmes. But according to the WHO low-cost screening approaches, such as clinical breast examination, could be implemented in limited resource settings when the necessary evidence from ongoing studies becomes available.

Driver in ‘Phagwah Day’ fatality granted $1M bail Brandon Rahaman was yesterday placed on $1M bail for an accident that resulted in fatality earlier this year. The twenty-two year-old businessman of 56 Robb Street, Georgetown appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving. It is alleged that on March 17, 2014 Rahaman drove motor pick up (GRR4883) in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of 21-year-old Wazim Mohamed Hussein. The facts of the case are that on Monday March 17, last, the defendant drove his vehicle
proceeding south along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, when he lost control causing the vehicle to topple over numerous times, resulting in serious injury to several passengers, including Hussein. All the persons involved were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical examination and treatment after the accident, however, Hussein was pronounced dead on arrival at GPHC. Rahaman was represented by Attorney-at-law Basil Williams, who requested reasonable bail; stating the deceased was in the same
vehicle with the defendant. The Attorney said that his client is on $50,000 station bail and is not a flight risk. The lawyer also told the court that as requested by the police his client had been reporting to the Brickdam Police Station every Monday at 9:00 a.m., except on National Holidays. Police Prosecutor Joel Ricknauth made no objections to bail, but asked that the defendant lodge his passport. Bail was granted in the sum of $1M and the court was adjourned until October 31 when statements will be filed. The commencement of the trial is set for November 16.

Drunken quarrel leads to attempted murder charge Lionel Klass appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with attempted murder. According to the charge, Klass, a resident of Kitty, unlawfully and maliciously wounded Salem Khan with intent to murder him. The incident is alleged to have occurred on October 25, at Railway Street, Kitty Georgetown. Klass had no legal representation before the court. He was not required to plead to the charge. According to Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant, on
the day in question both the virtual complainant (VC) and the accused were at a shop at Railway Street, Kitty, consuming alcohol, when an argument ensued. Khan picked up a bottle and hit the defendant in his face. The latter in turn picked up some broken glass and dealt the victim several slashes about his body. Both of the men were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation

Elderly woman killed at Canal #2…
Judge to rule on admissibility of caution statement Justice Navindra Singh is expected give a ruling on a voir dire (trial within a trial), which was conducted to determine the admissibility of a caution statement of the fourth named accused in a matter for which four men are on trial for the murder of Canal Number Two resident, Budhia. Sixty-eight year-old Budhia also called ‘Ronui was murdered during a robbery at her home in Conservancy Dam at Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara, (WBD). The woman was at the time sharing the home with her daughter and thirteen yearold granddaughter. A post mortem examination conducted on the body of the elderly woman, determined the cause of death to be asphyxia due to manual strangulation. Police investigations led
MURDERED: ‘Budhia’ to the arrests of Nigel Sookram, Steve Sookdeo called ‘Coolie Boy’, Roy Anthony Sewnarine and Vishal Seecharan called “Markie,” who were subsequently charged with the murder. The men are on trial at the
High Court before Justice Singh and a mixed twelvemember jury. The accused are being represented by Attorneys-at-Law Huckumchand Parag and Raymond Alli. Justice Singh is expected to rule on whether the statements procured from Vishal Seecharan were freely and voluntarily given and can be admitted into the trial. Earlier in the trial, the caution statement belonging to one of the accused (Sookdeo) was read to the court. According to the statement, Sookdeo detailed that he, “Nigel, Markie and Roy,” had planned the robbery which took place on October 20, 2008. Sookdeo had told police investigators that he and his colleagues had hired a car at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara and travelled to
Canal Number Two, WBD, where they broke into the house and tied up “the old lady” and other occupants of the one-flat building before robbing them of cash and jewellery. At the commencement of the matter, State Prosecutor Judith Gildharie-Mursalin had called the victim’s daughter, Basmattie Rampersaud to the stand. Rampersaud recalled the night of the incident. She told the court that thieves broke into her house and made off with more than a million dollars in cash and jewellery. She said that the bandits bound the occupants of the house, all females, including her elderly mother, using duct tape. The woman said that the perpetrators not only robbed and terrorized her elderly mother, but that she was killed in the process.
MARAD probes Demerara River mishap Quick action might have been responsible for saving the life of a crew member aboard a vessel towing another which sank at the mouth of the Demerara River. According to a report from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), at approximately 22:30 hours on Monday October 27, 2014, a loaded barge with the name DAR ‘B’ while being towed by a tug, name given as ‘KYLE’, sank in the Demerara River. Reports are that the barge was on one of its regular voyages from Teperu Quarry in the Essequibo River, towards its discharge berth in Kingston, Georgetown.
DAR ‘B’, which is owned by BK Marine, was reported to have 2,000 tons of aggregate on board at the time of the incident. There were five crew members on board the tug and reports suggest one of the crew members fell overboard. The crew member it was revealed was however wearing a life jacket at the time. Nevertheless, desperate efforts were made to rescue the crew member, which perhaps was instrumental in ensuring that there were no causalities associated with the incident. Officials of MARAD were made aware of the development and were swiftly
in transit to the location. This publication however understands that prior to the arrival of MARAD officials to secure the area, an outbound ship came into contact with the stone from the sunken barge. Consequently the ship remained stuck in that position for about one hour but was able to refloat as the tide began flooding. Even as officers from MARAD sought to locate and mark the exact position of the sunken barge, navigation in the area was temporarily suspended. However, the navigation service has since resumed with vessel traffic control
(GPHC) for medical examination and treatment; after which Klass was arrested and charged. The Prosecutor explained that the victim is currently hospitalized and is suffering from severe injuries; he requires a tube to be fed. After hearing the prosecution’s presentation, the Magistrate remanded Klass to prison. The matter has been adjourned until November 14.
measures being put in place. This, according to MARAD, was slated to be enhanced during the course of yesterday as more buoys were to be placed during the day to aid mariners to safely navigate in the area. And as plans are streamlined to undertake salvage operations, MARAD said that moves will be made to launch an investigation into the mishap. Meanwhile in a brief conversation with this newspaper, Brian Tiwari, owner of the sunken barge, confirmed that efforts are underway to salvage the vessel. He did not provide a figure of estimated losses.

Mechanic remanded for city carjacking A mechanic accused of pouncing on a couple and relieving them of their valuables at gunpoint before driving off with the car they were in, was yesterday remanded to prison. Quacy Roberts, charged with three counts of robbery under arms, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. According to the police, on October 18, last, at East La Penitence, Georgetown, armed with a gun, Roberts robbed Teresa Fredericks of a Samsung cellular phone, purse and $10,000 cash. Roberts was accused too of robbing Jermaine Knights of a Samsung touch cellular phone and $43,000 as well as a Toyota Premio motorcar belonging to Troy King. Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that Knights parked King’s car and was in it with Fredericks. He said that Roberts opened the car, pulled a gun on the duo, relieved them of the items and drove away with the car after putting them out. He said that acting on information received, the accused was apprehended by
the Police. According to Grant, Roberts assisted in recovering the car’s engine, while the shell of the said vehicle was recovered at another location. The prosecution said that Roberts had been identified by the victims. Addressing the court, Roberts on the other hand, claimed that he had never been placed on an Identification (ID) parade. He said he was arrested by the police in Albouystown when they raided a house and found 45 spent shells. He said that he had been remanded by the Chief Magistrate on a firearm and ammunition charge. Roberts insisted that he “never had any conflict with dem people.” The Prosecutor told the court, however, that Roberts was known to the duo. He objected to bail stating that a firearm had been used in the commission of the offence. Notwithstanding his pleas, Roberts was remanded to prison. The Prosecution was ordered to file statements and the case is set to be called again on November 17 for the filing of statements.

Global study shows clean energy activity surges in developing world
Clean energy
Developing nations represent a large and rapidly growing share of the world’s clean energy investment, according to Climatescope 2014, a landmark study released yesterday. The results suggest renewable technologies can be just as cost-competitive in emerging parts of the world as they are in richer nations. Climatescope is a countryby-country assessment, interactive report and index that offers the clearest picture yet of clean energy in 55 emerging markets in Africa, Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean. The findings show clean energy capacity added and the sensations grew at a faster pace than in developed countries, more than doubling in the past five years and totaling 142 GW (more than France’s current capacity). The report noted that demand for clean energy is growing faster on a percentage basis in these countries than in more developed nations. From 2008-2013, Climatescope nations added 142 GW (a bit more than the current total installed capacity of France) of new, non-large hydro renewables capacity. That represented a 143 percent growth rate. By comparison, wealthier OECD nations added 213GW, posting a clean energy capacity growth rate of 84 percent. Climatescope shows that countries are rapidly strengthening their policy frameworks: Stronger policies attract more clean energy investment. Climatescope was developed in 2012 by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank Group
(IDB) and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), and initially evaluated 26 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year ’s expanded project includes 19 countries in Africa, 10 in Asia, as well as 15 provinces in China and 10 states in India thanks to additional support from DFID and USAID. “The Inter-American Development Bank is pleased to see DFID and USAID join the Climatescope project to identify key drivers and markets for clean energy investment globally,” says Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the InterAmerican Development Bank. “This marks the third year of the Climatescope project, which aims not only to be a snapshot of where clean energy policy and finance stand today, but more importantly, serves as a guide to where clean energy opportunities can lie tomorrow.” A country’s ranking depends upon various factors: its clean energy investment policy, its market conditions, the structure of its power sector; the number and makeup of local companies operating in clean energy; and efforts toward reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The final output is the most comprehensive, one-stop source for decision makers to learn more about the market conditions for clean energy in these regions. “Private sector investment is vital if developing countries are to improve their renewable energy provision and underpin economic growth,” said the Rt Hon Justine Greening. “Climatescope boosts the
investment potential of this market by giving investors the information they need to make reliable funding decisions, thereby helping millions of people to access modern forms of energy and improve their quality of life. The UK’s support has enabled Climatescope to expand benefitting countries in Africa and Asia.” All of the research is easily accessed at w w w . g l o b a l climatescope.org, which includes an interactive tool for users to pinpoint specific information, from the most granular country details to specific sector analysis. The website also allows for complete downloads of the Climatescope data in Excel format. “Climatescope is a critical resource for the Power Africa initiative and our partners, providing an in-depth and objective evaluation of lowcarbon energy opportunities in emerging markets, including Africa,” said U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah. “With over $20 billion in project financing commitments from our private sector partners, Power Africa aims to add 30,000 megawatts of cleaner, more efficient electricity generation capacity throughout subSaharan Africa. Climatescope’s evaluation of the rapid growth of supply and demand for clean energy in Africa reinforces an important reality; Power Africa’s goal to expand energy access across the continent can and should be met in large part through clean energy development, whether at the utility scale or beyond the grid.”

For 23rd time, U.N. nations urge end to U.S. embargo on Cuba UNITED NATION (Reuters) - The U.N. General Assembly yesterday voted overwhelmingly for the 23rd time to condemn the decadeslong U.S. economic embargo against Cuba, with many nations praising the island state for its response in fighting the deadly Ebola virus that is ravaging West Africa. In the 193-nation assembly, 188 countries voted for the nonbinding resolution, titled “Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.” As in previous years, the only countries that voted against the declaration were the United States and an ally, Israel. The Pacific island nations Palau, Marshall Islands and Micronesia abstained. The voting result was identical to last year’s. In a speech on the U.N. podium, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez appealed to the United States to change course on an embargo he said has caused great harm to the people of Cuba and caused cumulative economic damage amounting to more than $1 trillion. “We invite the government of the United States to establish mutually respectful relations,” Rodriguez said. “We can try to find a solution to our differences through respectful dialogue.
Bruno Rodriguez “We can live and deal with each other in a civilized way despite our differences,” he said. “Cuba will never relinquish our sovereignty.” U.S. envoy Ronald Godard dismissed the resolution, saying Havana uses the yearly General Assembly vote as an “attempt to shift blame” for economic problems that are its own creation. Evoking former U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s famous “tear down this wall” speech at the Berlin Wall in 1987, Godard criticized the Cuban government’s restrictions on the Internet, saying “tear down the digital wall of censorship”. While the General Assembly’s vote is nonbinding and symbolic, it serves to highlight U.S. isolation regarding Havana. It is one of very few issues where all of Washington’s
Western allies part ways with the United States. A number of countries lauded Havana for sending more doctors than any other country to West Africa to combat the biggest outbreak of Ebola since the disease was identified in 1976. Among those praising Cuba’s contribution in the battle against Ebola were Iran, on behalf of the 120-nation bloc of nonaligned countries, and Bolivia, on behalf the Group of 77 plus China, a group of developing nations. Mexico, India and others echoed that praise. Adoption of the resolution has become an annual ritual. When it first passed in 1992, it received 59 yes votes and three votes against. But there were 71 countries that abstained and 46 that did not participate in the vote. The gradual shift to a nearunanimous vote in favor is a clear sign of the widespread disapproval of the U.S. embargo on Cuba. Washington broke diplomatic ties and imposed a comprehensive trade embargo on the Communistrun Caribbean island more than half a century ago during the Cold War. Its policy today appears to be influenced by domestic politics in Florida, where Cuban exiles have opposed any conciliation with former President Fidel Castro or current President Raul Castro, who took over for his brother in 2008.
Rousseff’s win in Brazil raises questions about EM reforms LONDON (Reuters) Pledges of reform in emerging markets have encouraged investors this year, but Brazil’s vote against any change at the top of its government is raising questions over whether the reforms will be delivered in hyped-up markets like India and Indonesia. Leftist Dilma Rousseff won re-election as Brazil’s president by a slim margin over business favorite Aecio Neves. Her Workers’ Party is credited with lifting 40 million Brazilians out of poverty, but investors want to see bold pro-business measures to reverse the country’s deepening economic funk. Brazil illustrates the challenges of the developing world. As economic growth and foreign investment slow, many countries are being pressed to cut deficits, ditch
handouts and privatize - popular measures with investors, but fiercely opposed by poor voters who rely on subsidized food and fuel.Markets showed their disappointment with the election result. Brazil’s currency, the real,
suffered its worst selloff in a decade. Shares of Brazilian companies, some of the biggest in emerging markets, fell 5 to 10 percent on Monday, wiping $20 billion off the Bovespa index.

(Reuters) - Replacement quarterback Colt McCoy overcame a limping Tony Romo to lift the Washington Redskins to a 20-17 overtime victory over the red-hot Dallas Cowboys on Monday, snapping the home team’s winning streak at six games. McCoy, who was named as starter after filling in for a struggling Kirk Cousins last week, led Washington to a winning drive on the first possession of overtime with Kai Forbath booting the decisive 40-yard field goal. “It was our moment,” third-string quarterback McCoy told reporters. “I made some mistakes tonight but my team mates stuck with me, we found a way to win and it feels great.” Trailing by three, Dallas had one last chance to reply but failed to make it through the first set of downs with a bruised Romo tossing two straight incomplete passes to end the game. Romo was taken out of the contest in the third quarter with a back injury but returned in the final minutes of regulation to try to lead an ultimately unsuccessful comeback. It was the second straight win for the Redskins (3-5) while Dallas (6-2) lost for the first time since the seasonopener. “(McCoy) kept us in the game and we didn’t have any major turnovers,” said Redskins coach Jay Gruden. “This is a heck of a win for us to really get started for the rest of the season.” McCoy was strong in his starting opportunity as he tossed for 299 yards and put Washington ahead 17-10 with a seven-yard rush early in the fourth. Dallas answered with backup QB Brandon Weeden, briefly taking over for Romo, finding Jason Witten on a 25yard connection that sent the game into overtime. The Washington defense applied pressure to Romo all night, sacking him five times. Brandon Meriweather had two of them while Keenan Robinson tallied 10 tackles and made the sack on Romo that sent him out of the game in the third. “He caught me pretty good,” said Romo, who underwent back surgery in December. “Even if I hadn’t had back surgery I would probably feel that one. It was a direct shot.” Romo finished with 209 yards passing and threw a TD to receiver Dez Bryant in the first for a 7-3 lead. Washington moved
Washington Redskins running back Alfred Morris (46) runs with the ball in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. The Redskins beat the Cowboys 20-17 in overtime. Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports ahead in the second on a fiveyard run from Alfred Morris, but the Cowboys tied it 10-10 with Dan Bailey’s field goal before halftime. NFL-leading rusher
DeMarco Murray registered his eighth straight 100-yard running game for Dallas, compiling 141 yards on the ground along with 80 yards receiving in the defeat.

Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship
Stuart Maloney returns to Guyana after six-year absence He was once regarded as one of the best drivers in the region and someone who thrilled Guyanese fans where ever he raced, but had not returned to these shores to race since 2008. Well, local fans will have another chance to see Barbadian Stuart Maloney make his return to the South Dakota Circuit since winning the individual title when the final leg of the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) is staged on November 16 here in Guyana. Maloney, who is one
member of the Maloney clan that is headed by father Doug and brother Mark, will no doubt be aiming to duplicate that memorable performance of six years ago when he raced to five wins in the Championship to beat another champion Jamaica’s David Summberbell Jnr for the coveted crown. He will, however, have to contend with a rising star in Guyana’s Kristian Jeffrey, who made his car racing debut in the CMRC this year and currently leads the race for the title with 85 points. Jeffrey was in superb form when he demonstrated his
natural ability and skills with a scorching display in front of Maloney’s home crowd during the first leg in Barbados and the Barbadian ace will no doubt be looking to pay back the favour here in Guyana. He will also have as an incentive to upstage Jeffrey and the locals, the fact that Barbados trails Guyana by one point, while the pursuit for the overall title is close with leaders Trinidad and Tobago just 12 points ahead. Trinidad and Tobago currently enjoys first place with 308 points and they are followed by Guyana 0n 297, Barbados on 296 and Jamaica in the cellar with 151.

Bad light ends 3rd “Test” in tame draw
Moratuwa, Sri Lanka Bad light ended play prematurely forcing a draw in the 3rd and final “Test” between West Indies A and Sri Lanka A at the Tyronne Fernando Stadium. It was Sri Lanka A that had the edge, chasing 218 runs for victory with less than 40 overs left in the day’s play to get under 60 runs. However, the umpires decided the light wasn’t good enough for play to continue. West Indies A started the fourth and final day on 183/3 with Jonathan Carter unbeaten on 69. He would only add nine runs to his overnight score before falling to Tharindu Kaushal for 78. Kaushal would go on to take 5-78. However, once Chaturanga de Silva accounted for Fletcher, the West Indies A folded easily.
The last seven wickets fell for just 51 runs. Silva himself finished with 4-57. Sri Lanka A needed 218 runs to win the series 2-0. Shannon Gabriel gave the visitors the ideal start, removing both Sri Lankan openers in his first three overs. However, an unbeaten 57 from Lahiru Thirimanne steadied the hosts in their chase. Ashan Priyanjan was also solid in his knock, hitting 36 from from 47 balls. His knock included six boundaries. He would eventually be one of two of Davendra Bishoo’s victims. Kithuruwan Vithanage was at the crease on 20 not out when bad light ended play prematurely. A draw means Sri Lanka A won the series 1-0 after winning the 1st “Test”. Barnwell’s 5-57 gives... Kemo Paul and Sinclair joined forces to embark on ‘operation rebuild’ and both batsmen p l a y e d a n array of spanking shots on the parched outfield to spearhead a spirited lower order fight-back with an entertaining 78run eighth wicket partnership. Sinclair, who reached the boundary six times in his 58, pushed forward to one that ‘stopped’ on him and lobbed an easy catch to point as left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie broke the valuable partnership at 165-8. Paul, whose 37 included two fours and a six, was then taken at long-on trying to clear the boundary off Permaul at 181-9 before Motie wrapped up the innings when he had Anthony Adams (2)
caught behind. Motie (2-28) and Permaul (2-34) offered good support to Barnwell f o r J o h n s o n ’s X 1 w h o lost both openers at 38 to off-spinner Jacobs who has 2-12 so far. Trevon Griffith (9) punched Jacobs to extracover after stroking pacer Raun Johnson majestically past his ankles for four, while the left-handed Robin Bacchus fell for his second duck in the match when he pushed forward to one that bounced and spun for Crandon at slip to hold a stupendous one-handed catch, diving to his right. Chandrika then dominated the unfinished third wicket stand of 35 with Narsingh Deonarine (8) with several audacious
shots to the delight of a small gathering. The stylish righthander hammered Jeremy Gordon, w h o a g a i n bowled with genuine pace on a ‘dead’ track, down the ground and flicked him elegantly to long leg for another boundary. Chandrika fought fire with fire and survived a testing period against Gordon who peppered him with a couple of quick shorts balls before Chandrika got deep into his crease and disdainfully pulled Anthony Adams for his 10th four to reach his 50 after smashing the spinner for three boundaries in the over. Upon reaching his half-century Chandrika h a s scored 10 of the 11 boundaries in the entire innings.

GT&T Indoor Hockey Championships underway
Action in one of the ladies matches on Monday night.
The Hikers men’s first division hockey team drew first blood Monday evening with an impressive 6-2 victory over defending champions GCC on the opening night of the GT&T National Indoor Championships. National stars Jamarj Assanah and Aroydy Branford both put in stellar performances for the victors and were unstoppable in the dying minutes when
the opposition began to tire and fade. The Hikers first goal in the second minute of play came through a bit of luck as a defensive clearance went straight to the stick of lurking forward Robert France who effortlessly guided the ball into the open GCC net. GCC’s Mark Sargeant managed to equalize two minutes later as the pace of the game heightened with both teams threatening to take the prize. Kevin Spencer pushed GCC ahead with a field goal in the 13th minute which was neutralized almost immediately by defender Andrew Stewart, scoring one of several penalty corners earned by the Hikers. Aroydy Branford stuck in one more just before half time to give the Hikers their second lead of the match at 32. The second half was all Hikers as they seemed to improve with each pass and, leaving a tiring GCC short of answers. The Hikers drilled in three more unanswered goals in the second half through Branford, France and Colonel ‘Scooby Doo’ Heywood to cruise to an easy opening victory. Earlier in the evening, the Mini ladies comprising of a national under-19 squad easily undid newcomers Old Fort by 5 goals to 1.
